promises
If we ever have to say goodbye, promise me this:
Promise me that you’ll still smile when our song comes on the radio, bringing back memories of our first date. Promise me that you’ll still dance, in your car, under the gas station lights, way past when you’re supposed to be home. Promise me you’ll still sing at the top of your lungs in the middle of a crowded dance floor. Promise me that you’ll still look for our favorite candies every time you go shopping because, “see, I told you they were good.” Promise me that you’ll still laugh at your own jokes, even if you’re the only one that finds them funny. Promise me that you’ll still cry at your favorite movies, because, “damn it, didn’t they deserve a happy ending?” Promise me that you’ll still run through sprinklers like a little kid, even though you’ll be wet the rest of the walk home. Promise me that you’ll still travel around the world, meeting new people, seeing new things, and making all your dreams come true. And promise me that when your kids point to the photos, asking who I am, you’ll smile, and tell them of all our adventures, and how we lived like there was no tomorrow.
Promise me that you’ll remember us.

when taylor said "you're on your own, kid, you always have been" and when noah said "i'm still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them" & "but i ignore things, and i move sideways, until I forget what I felt in the first place" and when conan said "i'm so good at telling lies...told a million to survive" and when harry said "you don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up" & "you don't have to be sorry for doing it on your own"

maybe one day i’ll here this song on the radio.
or maybe i’ll be in the audience at MSG watching you play it live.
either way,
whenever i hear this song again,
i’ll think back to tonight,
and the feeling of hearing it for the first time.

someday
one day we’ll be telling our kids these stories, and we’ll refer to these times as “the good old days,” but just for now, i’m happy to be right here, right now, with you.
