The advice of "every word has to advance the plot" is so wild like why are you starving it. If story is craving some good scene that doesn't advance the plot but it's cool and you want it to happen, do it. Feed your story so it can grow strong.

How to write the passage of time
Time is a crucial element in writing that shapes the narrative. From linear progression, to flashbacks and foreshadowing, it gives you complete control of how your story unfolds.
Here are some tips to describe the passage of time to make your narratives more compelling.
Use the natural world
Describe the changing seasons
Show plant growth and death
Visualise the ebb and flow of tides
Describe the decomposition of flora and fauna
Describe the ways that landscapes change on long journeys
Use the weather to illustrate time jumps
Illustrate the affect that shifting shadows have on a location
Use heavenly bodies like stars, the rise and set of the sun, and phases of the moon
Describe physical activities
Show family gatherings and how they change over the years
Describe the process of finishing a creative pursuit
Create repetitive activities and routines
Have a character engage in an activity, like gardening, that visually changes
Have your characters learn a new skill
Write a change in location that requires a journey to get from point A to point B
Use your setting's seasonal celebrations to illustrate a time shift for individual characters and their world
Use sound
Describe the ticking of clocks
Have your characters' voice change with their age
Illustrate changing musical styles
Have your characters improve an audible skill like singing, swordplay, or learning a musical instrument
Show a character's conversational style changing as they grow
Use the sounds of nature, like leaves becoming brittle as they crunch underfoot, or rain turning into storms
Use silence to illustrate it getting late
Describe objects
Have food left out go mouldy
Illustrate buildings and settings being overtaken by nature
Show the lifecycle of a family heirloom
Describe textiles fading and degrading over time
Describe the freshness of paint; is it wet and glistening, or cracked and dry?
Illustrate technological change and advancement
Describe the repairs in a beloved object
Show a common object like a pencil to describe how it changes with use

is it just me or does fanfiction writing consist of 30% staring blankly at the document, 20% watching the scenes in your head and being mad that they aren't on the page already, 10% coming up with something genius and immediately forgetting it before you can write it down and being dissatisfied with everything that comes after it, 10% wanting to reread everything you've already written, 10% coming up with ideas for anything and everything that isn't the story you're currently working on, 10% making mood boards and playlist and art for the fic and the remaining 10% is the actual writing? just me? cool.. aaanyway, 64,000 words and counting on a new fic!

You know how wizard are depicted as old men? I was toying with the notion that the price of using magic over time is rapid aging, which leads the person to have an unnaturally long lifespan, as well as having to depend on magic more and more as time goes on.
What do you think?
I love it! It adds an interesting twist to the usual wizard trope—having them stuck in this constant tug-of-war between gaining power and paying for it with their physical form. It's like a Faustian bargain of sorts.
Think about the stories you could weave with this concept. Wizards becoming increasingly desperate to maintain their youth and vitality, potentially pushing the boundaries of what's morally acceptable in their pursuit. It could also create conflict, both internal and external, as they grapple with the consequences of their choices, always teetering on the brink of a moral abyss.
I'm excited to see what you do with this! Thanks for sharing ❤

Titles!
I'm having a bit of writer's block with my next chapter, so it'll be a while until I can pick the story back up. Also, I'm rethinking my entire timeline again, because of.. well... developments...
In the meantime, I thought, let's share something different! On my big Timeline Excel sheet, I have a column called "Title," in which I dot down potential titles for the chapters I have yet to write. The way my mind works is that once I start writing the ideas for a plot line or a chapter, I need a title. While these sometimes change as I go, I often stick with them.
So, without spoiling the story, I figured I'd lift a small part of the curtain and show you my planned titles. If I do change the entire timeline, many of these go out the window, but for now, this is what's coming... Guesses or comments about these titles are welcome.

Writing smut means you walk around your house listening to your smut playlist at full volume, and yelling out shit like; “I’ve made up my mind! I’m doing anal!” At the top of your lungs. All my neighbours heard that and now I can never look them in the eye. I wish this was the first stupid thing they’ve seen from me, but there is a long history of me making an absolute cuntspangle of myself around them all. Whatever. I’ll shout something even more scandalous later and hope they forget this one.
