𝟑/ ∞ 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 ― The Volturi-Romanian War In the year 387 AD The Volturi initiates the war that would change the course of vampiric history for over a thousand years. Prior to the war the two covens had taken to spying on one another, until one faithful morning when a small group of Volturi guards took out two vanguards stationed close to Volaterrae; a declaration of war followed soon after. Three major battles took place over the course of a century, with skirmishes common throughout Europe and parts of Asia as often as every week. What turned the tides were The Volturi’s focus on a predominantly gifted guard with well trained non-gifted guards to cover potential weaknesses. Compared to the modern day roster, only Felix, Corin and Chelsea remain in the guard to tell the tale of the battles won. While Aro & Sulpicia took the role of strategic counsel, it was Caius, Marcus and Athenodora who led the the guards to victory on the battlefield. The war came to an end in 492 AD, with losses on both sides and The Volturi emerging victorious. A new golden age was ushered in under Volturi Law.

While I do believe The Volturi went to great lengths in order to erase the knowledge of vampires from the world. The notion above would most likely be a narrative spun by our dear troublemakers Stefan and Vladimir, in order to make the ruling coven even more cruel in the eyes of scholars.
However...
The library actually had a steady decline over 800 years, and did not go up in one glorious roaring fire as the stories would have you believe.
The first time the library in fact burned in 48 BCE, hundreds of years before The Volturi could even call themselves a ruling coven. This was still the heydays of the Egyptian and Romanian covens. There would have been no jurisdiction that demanded they do anything about it. Instead, I would imagine they salvaged some of it while conveniently let the humans do the destruction for them.
Already in 145 BCE did the romans purge the library of scholarly interests and scholars resigned en masse, nobody cared for the knowledge. Then Julius Caesar arrived with his civil war and it burned for the first time, for only to be ravaged only some years later and was destroyed again. Under Roman rule the library naturally declined due to laws being passed that forbade any pagan influences, something the library also housed. By 642 when the muslim conquest of Egypt took place the library was almost gone; what little remained was disregarded.
Humanity is destructive, Aro can worry about other endeavours.

It's about the Romanian(then Dacian)coven. What do you think life was when the Volturi was not in power yet? How was life for those who lived under the Romanians? How were the tithes collected? How were the human slaves treated? How were new vampires chosen among human slaves? What did humans thought of them(slaves)? Did humans rebel against them? The virgin sacrifices. Vladimir and Stefan as rulers. The coven dynamics etc. Their thoughts on Aro and his law. I just ask for your humble opinion.🤗
First of all, thank you, kind kind soul, for giving me an ask--I've never gotten one of those!!
Secondly, in response to your question (or series thereof):
I can't imagine life under the Romanians was good. (For humans, at any rate!) Any society founded on slavery and blood tithes sounds like a hard pass to me.
In terms of how human slaves/snacks/future vampires were selected...Unless they had some (better) version of Eleazar to work with, I assume the Romanians had to operate using word of mouth ("There's this girl with red hair in a nearby village who the townspeople say can shoot fire from her fingertips; let's find and change her") or trial and error ("Hmmm, I don't feel like drinking all these humans today, and this one Amuses me...Let's change him and see what happens!") Since vampires weren't a secret in Dacia, there would likely be many humans who, if delivered to the Romanians, begged for mercy and asked to serve them. If they seemed sufficiently sincere and the Romanians were feeling particularly charitable (or in need of a new DoorDash deliverer), they might grant the human's wish. And if they weren't sincere? Well, the deliverer might easily become the delivery. After all, what would the human be able to do about it? Not much, given that Twi-vamps are practically indestructible without modern weapons (and I doubt that even Vladimir and Stefan would get so cocky as to let their human slaves have access to fire...but you never know!) If a human revolt happened, I think it would go so horrifically, legendarily bad for all humans involved that there would not be a second within their lifetime. I don't think any survivors (or their surviving relatives) could necessarily begrudge any vampire- or servant-wannabes after that (even if Vladimir and Stefan certainly didn't make any friends with the human population that way).
Speaking of Vladimir and Stefan...Now seems a good time to transition to discussing them as rulers! Besides the obvious bad stuff (slavery, blood tithes, etc.), we don't know too much about them/their leadership style, canonically speaking. Not canonically speaking... I think they would be like Caius left unchecked. They are big into revenge--certainly in regards to the Volturi, who admittedly did a number on them in every way, shape, and form--but I would hazard a guess they've always had a flair for vengeance, as well as dramatic (and violent) shows of power. They lasted nearly three thousand years (the Twilight Saga Wiki says they were founded 1000 years before the Volturi came into being--which was sometime between 1200-1100 BCE--and the Volturi overthrew them sometime between 400-500 BCE), which likely means they had some terrifyingly good PR among humans and vampires alike. The Wiki also says the Romanians' downfall was due to excessive sparring with rival covens, so they definitely weren't gore-shy. This quality of theirs also makes me think life under the Romanians for vampires might have resembled life under the Southern Vampire-War general Maria, since the Romanians don't seem to have the same penchant for rules that Aro and the Volturi do. This is ultimately why I think they butt heads.
Vladimir and Stefan's preferred interpretation of "Order" is "Command": the unquestioned hierarchy of vampire > human; the simple fact of being so powerful that, as they put it, "[w]hen we ruled, everything came to us" and that their word (but nothing else) was law. Aro's preferred interpretation of "Order" is "Stability" and "Sustainability." Perhaps seeing the dangers of an openly vampire-led civilization left unchecked (human extinction, for one), Aro instead strove to create a world where vampire was openly sovereign over vampire...because as the Earth's apex predator, the greatest threat to vampirekind is itself. Vladimir and Stefan, it appears, scoff at this notion--they seem to think their "honesty" about vampires' existence and vampires' monstrosity is less pretentious and thus superior to the Volturi' "put[ting] on white hats and call[ing] [them]selves 'saints'" as part of what I'd call a "Benevolent Overlord" approach. Or they might just be salty that Aro and his coven beat them at what they did best for millennia.
Either way, speaking as a human, I'm pret-ty glad that the Volturi came out on top!
..............................................................................................................................
I hope that answers all of your questions in a Satisfactory Manner, dear Asker! Please feel free to send me any more Asks, folks; God knows I'm just waiting for an excuse to write about Geeky Stuff. :)

Part.2.
Oops, moving on (I'm still learning how to use tumblr). In Greek religion, it was also believed in the relationship of gods with humans and demigods (children of these relationships). Do you think these demigods would be hybrids like Nessie and Nahuel? Hybrids that were part of the Romanian clan and, when killed, went unnoticed by Aro, Caius and Marcus, or did some manage to escape and live in hiding? Come to think of it, Stefan and Vladimir hands were worried about Nessie's species. If it was something "new" to them, wouldn't they show at least a modicum of astonishment and surprise? They acted so "okay, you have a half vampire child, not impressive. Bring on the Volturi and our revenge will be fulfilled!" And since the Greek histories were transcribed solely by Homer and Hesiod, and Aaron spent centuries tinkering with world history, changing a bit here and a bit there (even burning the library of Alexandria), he could have changed some parts of the writings ( like Ambrosia and Nectar as food of the gods and guarantee of immortality instead of blood and poison respectively) and destroyed others (like maybe sculptures showing possible sacrifices of virgin girls to the gods or as temple servants) to keep this part more obscure of history forever erased, with the only witnesses being himself, Caius, Marcus, Stefan and Vladimir, and Amun? They are the only ones from that era. What do adm's think? (Brazilian fan 🇧🇷)
Oh I think the Romanians just sincerely didn't care. "Have you been naughty, Carlisle, created an immortal child? No? Eh, an uprising's an uprising."
To them Renesmee was an excuse, I don't think they would have cared if her mother was a horse and she was the world's first ever hybrid centaur.
Slight correction about Greek histories- Homer is agreed upon to have not been a real historical figure. His two works, the Illiad and the Odyssey, are poems that were transmitted orally for centuries before ultimately being written down (and even then in several forms, we have a lot of versions lying around) and while there is much to be said of how we can use them as historical sources, they are ultimately neither written by a historian nor something Aro would have been able to tamper with (given there were multiple versions and they were so intensely popular). When I imagine him tampering with human historical records, I always imagine him destroying records of which there was only one copy and which couldn't be easily reproduced, i.e. he would erase your inscriptions from the stone after your bones had turned to dust.
Also shoutout to Thucydides, a real MVP Greek historian without whom we would know much less about the Peloponnesian war.

United by Eternity
Pairing: Vladimir x (y/n).
Summary: I had you once, but I lost you, so now I am eternally yours.
Warning: Clinically insane, lost you once, mentions of war and insulting the volturi.
Word count: 1109 words.
a/n: This took a while, but english is not my first language. I do hope you guys like it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vladimir's POV.
Past actions come to present actions trice what is understandable. It is a little too late to stand here preaching? Horrifying. Every time my eyes find (y/n) everything plays slow like the day couldn't get any worse. Back then when we ruled the human world to our advances; we took our job seriously. We had clans come from far and wide to established alliances, people joining us or wanting to be part of us, and food came from all over the world. When being from the Romanian Coven meant something.
(y/n) had my head on her lap running her fingers through his short blonde hair. She hummed a song between her lips no words spoken from them. Vladimir lowered his eyelids letting the atmosphere of his mate succumbed him.
He would give up all of him to make this moment last forever.
Despite the Romanian Coven choice of looking past Vampires with powers. His treasure has one calming everyone in the room no matter what. Vladimir embraces his hands surrounding his mate locking her towards himself. The atmosphere took a drastic chance now that the doors to the throne room have been open by Coronel. He strolls in with a couple others from the Coven worry about some new coven making little to no change in how we lived.
“We can't let them get away with it!”, One Coven member hidden behind a cloak shines out.
“We can take Aro out”. Xutopia speaks coming past Coronel. Her brunette long hair falls in cascades as she adds soon after, “they will disperse after the deed is done". She pleads as a second in command to Stefan.
A new coven member explains his frustration against why we are brushing off the Volturi.
Stefan opens his mouth to say something, but he stops himself closing his mouth. Xutopia raises an eyebrow at her brother not liking the fact she was ignored, “We are going to regret this”.
"Shut up", Vladimir mutters between gritted teeth annoyance bursts through his whole body. His eyes open, he removes his head from his mate’s lap.
“When have we lost?”. Vladimir crimson eyes fallen to each member in the room. His eyes glare intently to Coronel and then Xutopia, “We shouldn’t be so fucking confident”.
“Let me go ahead! Let me attack them when they aren’t expecting it!”.
His mate cuddles his side completely oblivious to what was spoken for her Vladimir is everything she has had. Vladimir eyes drift to her form resting (y/n)'s head on his chest. Everythìng fell in glorious praise with (y/n) stayed by his side.
"The Volturi are a scum!”. Xutopia shouts at the top of her lungs, many of our members screams after her confirming what she thought and a smile ran away from her face affirming pleased with a wide grin.
“They are just starting a war they won't win in the end. We are the Romanian Coven, aren't we coronel?". Vladimir drifted his attention to Coronel, who nodded before letting the words he held in his mind loose. Vladimir's calm but stern tone spreads his powerful energy, "I am not doubting our power, but The Volturi has convinced small covens! We should attack as soon as possible! We can't let them regroup. We could lose more if we let them grow". Coronel extended his hands as his voice filled the Romanian Castle Stronghold. He attracted crowds of Vampires and compelled humans to obey.
Back then we didn't mind. We didn't see the Volturi as a threat. Our worst mistake.
"Vladimir".
Vladimir's surroundings dissipate like a canvas getting washed over. His eyes drifted to his mate smiling at him as if he could cry. He would have, "Don't go, (y/n). Please". His last plead. He blinked the Romanian Castle meeting room was no more. It was replaced by white walls around him complemented by domino floors some type of hospital room. The stone walls were exchange with white walls and the stone floors were exchange with spotless floors. Each coven member disappear from sight taking form of tables, cabinets with other tolls and objects around the room.
Vladimir eyed the room, a sight escaping his lips trying to shake the memory away from his body. A hand-made contract with his cold ones. The contrast warmth to him, his eyes look up to (e/c) staring directly at him.
"Are you okay, Vlamir? You looked distant", (y/n) eyes soften in a welcoming manner with the nickname she gave him. He couldn't bring himself to tell her to stop; however, he did lose her centuries away, and he isn't starting on that note again.
No. He is not going to lose her ever again. No volturi. No coven will he let anyone take his human mate.
"Standing here looking at you takes all my breath away". Vladimir was quick to change the topic remembering how things used to be. How he lose her in the second retake battle with 100 new members. It is not something he can forgive himself that night he lost more than what he bargained for. We weren't prepared for a surprise attack.
"I will assume you are okay", (y/n) cheeks redden into next week. She pushes him playfully getting back to her job. It wouldn't be lying if he didn't say he missed her voice, her eyes going to him, her presence and if she is his other half his wishes granted, he is not going to let anything happen to her ever again even her scent every part of her is the original. He would cry with joy if he could.
He had constantly wished to have her return to him.
"I am good, (y/n)". Vladimir adds quickly so as not to worry her. Her eyes glance at him before her attention goes back to her job.
"I am glad", (y/n) whispers between her lips. A smile ran through Vladimir's lips knowing he did good. He will become her guard if he has to. Fuck the Volturi. His lips parted no words spoke staring at her. His eyes drifted to her like a magnet to a needle.
The room stood frozen looking at the machine that played in the background. (y/n)'s heart beats calmly her lips part. She moves back staring at Vladimir, "Did you say something?". She asks looking over at him. Vladimir runs his hands through his hair. He chuckles staring at her, "You are my mate, so now I am eternally yours”.
16. THE TRUTH
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHEN I ARRIVED ON THE ROOF, DAD WAS SITTING DOWN PEACEFULLY AND looking at the night sky. He just sat still as if he was a statue. His back was a perfect shape, not a hunchback. His legs were crossed over and his arms were placed on his knees as if he was doing yoga. I slowly walked toward him and saw that his eyes were still open.
"Hey, Dad," I said and he looked up at me.
"Hello, Violet," he replied and looked back at the sky.
I tried to think of something else but couldn't. Then, I asked him what I knew he was doing. "What are you doing?"
"Oh, doing what I tend to do when I get upset or angry, looking up at the stars. It always makes me feel calm. Such beautiful things, the stars are."
I followed his gaze and saw the stars. He was right too. They were like little fireflies just staying still on the large bluish-black screen. Then, far across, there was a crescent moon watching over us. I could imagine Ayla feeling relieved that it was only a crescent moon and not a full moon. Then, I thought about Dad and the Romanian Coven. Their hatred for each other still exists for nearly thousands and thousands of years. Yet one moved on and the two never did.
I sat down next to him.
"Dad?" I said and he hummed. "Are you right?"
"About what?" He asked.
"All of this being a mistake?"
"No," Dad shook his head and sadly sighed. "Yes?" He lowered his head, looking at his feet. "It's complicated. Especially for the situation, I'm in."
I turned my head away from him.
"We're not fighting," I told him. "Just talking."
"Yes, I'm well aware of that, Violet."
"And?" My golden eyes returned to him.
"Well, it was bad enough I didn't join when it was voluntary," he replied and I scoffed, getting up from the roof. "Violet, if it was to happen, it won't be just a war. Do you understand? It's not like anything that we've ever seen."
"Stop talking like that!" I yelled at him. "If the Volturi wants a fight, that's their problem, not ours!"
"It's not fighting," Dad rose as well. "It's dying. Much like this conversation."
"Tell that to the Romanians," I muttered quietly, and, somehow hearing it, Dad walked to me.
"You're still too young, Violet," he said.
"So is everyone else," I barked at him. "I've heard from Bella and Jacob that seven boys are turning into wolves because of our presence."
I looked down and thought about it. I couldn't imagine what those boys were going through. Seven little boys. Seven children. Maybe some weren't even sixteen. What would their mothers think? What would their fathers think? Would they be proud or scared of their children? And yet they were dragged into this mystic war of the supernatural. Then, I remembered when Victoria turned me. I was her weapon. It still pained me that I was her pawn in a chess game. And she and Bella were the queens.
I glanced back at Dad.
"They're all taking part in this," I said to him.
"I know," Dad replied.
"You know about Victoria and the newborn army? When I was... trying to tame myself and Riley gave me a blouse, I was ready to attack. Getting ready for battle. Until I got the blouse only to smell Bella's scent. And then, my motivation changed."
"You wanted to fight but changed your mind as soon you found out the reason," Dad concluded. "It's a testament to your character and I'm proud of you for it."
I sighed. "Yes, but... look what happened back there. You, Joseph, the Romanians, and me."
"Them saying that you might destroy the Volturi?"
"And I should... be animalized for having those gifts?" I bit my lip.
Dad placed his hands on my shoulders, looking at me. "Reputation is what people think of you," he said in a calm tone. "Character is what you are."
Dad reached his hand into his waistcoat pocket and pulled out a small pendant with a crest hanging from it. It was silver with a shield in front of the large V. The shield had eagles and trees; it also had rubies at the top. I had to admit, the pendant looked pretty.
"Did the Volturi give you that?" I asked.
"Yes," Dad nodded. "When I was a newborn, I wanted to serve the Volturi. But soon, I began to question what right we had to take the land, riches, and the lives of vampires who were only defending their homeland and their way of living. Every vampire I killed, I killed a piece of myself."
He sighed, seemingly bitter about his past. "Maybe being dead would have been better," he said and returned the pendant to his pocket.
Then, I remembered the conversation between Dad and me when we looked at a painting. A painting of him with the Volturi.
"During their rule, the coven, as with most vampires at the time, did not bother keeping their existence a secret. They willingly let the people of Romania know they were vampires.
"Humans were delivered to them, and if they were pleased enough, the Romanians would choose to change them."
I shook my head. "But, Dad, the Romanians we're feeding on humans."
"But they also change them," Dad replied. "If they pleased them enough. So, since the twins' arrival, I... I was cast out of the Volturi."
"Wait, what?" I bewildered myself by his confession. "Why?"
"Because of their dark powers," he continued. "If it wasn't for them, maybe the Romanians would have won."
"What makes their gifts darker? I know about Jane's gift... well, a little bit. But what about Alec's gift?"
Dad stared at me, scared yet uncertain. "Do you want to know?"
I nodded.
"As you mention, Jane possesses a formidable gift, which has been shown to frighten even the strongest of vampires. Her gift is to create an illusion of burning pain. I have been used as a target frequently when Jane arrived, much to Felix's joy."
"What's that like?"
"It was like being burned alive at the stake but the fire hasn't killed you. Like the pain was going on forever and you wish it could stop. And when it does, you're too frightened to move."
Then, a memory of Bree's death came to my head.
"Why did you come?" she asked but before the newborn could answer, Bree screamed in agony and fell to the grass.
Bella flinched but I didn't. I was used to seeing other newborns in pain. Esme quickly stepped up.
"They came to destroy us – to kill Bella," Esme spoke, begging her to stop, but Jane ignored her.
Jane continued her torture, enjoying it. "Who created you?"
Bree screamed at the pain, making me feel this... What was it? Remorse. Pity. Anger.
"You don't need to do that," Esme said. "She'll tell you anything you want to know."
"I know." Jane voiced no care at all.
That was what Bree was a screaming act. That was what she was feeling. And I pitied her for it. I didn't do anything. The Cullens didn't do anything. But even if we tried, Jane would have inflicted pain on us.
"And her brother?" I resumed the topic.
"Alec's gift is to numb the senses of anyone he focuses on," Dad answered. "Sight, taste, smell, hearing, everything. It would all be gone, at least in their mind. In a way, he's the antidote to Jane. She makes you feel the worst pain imaginable. Alec, on the other hand, makes you feel nothing. Absolutely nothing. Sometimes, when the Volturi are feeling kind, they have Alec anesthetize someone before they're executed."
"And you still have that painting and the pendant?" I inquired. "Why?"
"Because there's a part of me that still care about them," he admitted. "Indeed, they cast me out like a wounded dog but I still have a love for them." Dad walked closer to me. "Violet, you may not know what it's like having love for a family only to realize they are the one thing that could destroy all that is good."
Dad's golden eyes glared up at the night sky again. "And I thought I would never feel this kind of love again until I met Helena and Joseph."
"And then your family grew," I said.
"Indeed," he chuckled.
"But... why did they say you run away?" I then asked him.
"The Volturi spread the rumours that I left them because of my cowardice," Dad said. "Who would believe that a vampire was cast out from the Volturi and being spared?"
"How so?"
"Let's just say that some vampires just want to have more power than others," Dad replied sadly. "And they deemed me as not powerful enough."
I took a breath in and looked back at the starry sky. A few stars flashed before my eyes like little flashes from cameras. Or little flames flickering from the darkness. We just sat in silence as the wolves howled through the night.
So
Because we need conflict
Let's try and have the Romanians cause up some shit - they wanna recruit vampires to take on the Volturi, and well they kinda liked Adam because Adam was a pretty fun guy
And at that moment - Adam wanted to get Evangeline as far away from the Volturi as possible so when they were like ayo let's meet up, he was like eh okay maybe in like a month or two ? (Bec that was when Evangeline had to turn)
So they just pitched up - and were like very threatening or idk the idea was for then to recruit Adam by threatening to kill Evangeline for good
So Adam was like okay fine but no harm comes to Evangeline
Evangeline gets info from Adam and then she goes and quickly emails the Volturi from a fake phone to get Demetri to track them and like save them
But Demetri doesn't come
Aro is back at Volterra like : give them some time. Let's see what they can come up with.
Meanwhile, Evangeline is trying not to die inside all the while playing secret assassin
But shit happens even more when her time is up and she has to turn (Adam doesn't turn her) so boom demetri is there and is like "yeah the kings want Evangeline." And Felix is with him, and Evangeline and Adam are like ???? Because what are they gonna do.
Plan is for Adam to be the two timing bitch - so he goes to the Volturi and obviously because Aro is tehre he figures out everything.
But oh shit. Then the Romanians know that Adam isn't on their side.
Okay no so wait, when Adam says he'll go with Evangeline, then Demetri is like, hm, how about no. And so Evangeline is the only one to go there.
Turns out baby Evangeline has to be the two timing vampire bitch (lol she SO asks Caius for tips - how to two time a coven)
Anyways, when she gets to Volterra she is (1) pissed because "DIDNT YOU GET MY EMAILS???" And (2) IF YOU GOT MY EMAILS THEN WHY DIDNT YOU REPLY? And (3) she's stressed about Adam especially since he's still with the Romanians and okay she thinks they started trusting him a bit because they didn't seem - okay no they seemed alarmed when Denetri and Felix got there but she's still so stressed.
Anyways Aro doesn't really like Adam because Adam is like a rebellious son you know (not to mention he knows Adam a bit from touching Edward's hand but now touching Evangeline's he obviously sees a different thing.) But Aro is old enough to know not to blindly trust people.
But oh, Evangeline? Thank god she doesn't have a mental shield because this means he can use Chelsea on her - and also, he thinks that it's a good thing she has such a good familial relationship with Adam, because that would mean the Romanians would believe if she played their side.
Damn, this whole war thing is gonna take a goddamn time - like a long time - because I liked the idea of the Romanians making a half vampire army - that'll take them, what, like, a full year from conception for the babies to be trained into being warriors?
Okay so it won't take that long but I think it'll take somewhat five years for Evangeline to adapt to vamp-hood and to also integrate herself into the Romanian ranks, because the Romanians won't trust her if she keeps on going back to Volterra (because Aro will wnat to touch her hand)
So oof the drama
Is dramatic
Because can you imagine essentially Caius and his mate being torn apart by war?
Like ooofffff I love it but poor Evangeline she just hates it and wants to cry
I think this whole arc for her will really shape her into the character that wanted to write - like the lowkey person who doesn't want to fight anymore, and to have Caius understand that part of her (understand just why she is like that and just - you know? Be able to relate to her a bit, except he still wants to fight because his mind just works better that way)
Any highly qualified opinions on Caius skinning werewolves and making nice clothing for his family? Personally I like to believe he still has a lot of blood on him when he hands them over but that is just me.
(okay so I know this was probably meant as a fun light-hearted ask, but have to go into infodump mode for this because i am, in fact, insane. sorry in advance;; )
(also content warning for topics of gore, torture, and animal death.)
In my mainverse, Caius went through two main stages when it came to how he both thought of and interacted with the Children of the Moon—aka werewolves.
In the first stage, the Volturi have won their entirely-too-long war with the Dacian (Romanian) coven, the few remaining Egyptian coven remain silent under the thumb of the Volturi, and they have gained a secure, mutual alliance with another powerful vampire clan, the Jiangshi (Chinese) Coven. The Volturi have finally gained order after thousands of years climbing their way into power, fighting tooth and claw for it. Now on top of that pecking order, they have time for the first time in many years to relax and focus on personal pleasures and leisure.
Caius specifically is no longer required as one of the main battle strategists, and is given time to himself. It’s important to note that the centuries of merciless violence and bloodshed that comes with war, has left Caius numb to an empathy that he previously had. Killing, and even torture, now comes as easy to him as breathing. On top of that, with all the previously mentioned, Caius winning the war, and knowing he’s good at what he does, is left with a bit of an unchecked ego and bloodlust.
It just so happens that Caius has a peaked interest in the hunting of werewolves. He has fought them before during accidental encounters, and knows how to kill them. Though he has never had the pleasure of seeking them out himself, only hearing tales shared amongst the guard. He is righteous in his claims that they be wiped out, as a danger to both vampires and humanity itself. He wants to seek out their destruction, and reveal in the bloodshed and victory.
So, Caius puts a team together. It consists of himself, Athenodora, Felix, Santiago, and a good handful of minor guards. They set out on horseback, swords, spears, and all. They find werewolves every so often, and kill them with ease. But what they’re looking for is packs. So they spend a considerable amount of time tracking and mapping out areas of suspicion, and taking them out one by one.
This map gets so far that where it once started in central Europe, ends up spanning all the way to east Asia. And so with their agreed alliance, the Volturi team up with the Jiangshi to wipe out werewolves to their extinction.
Within this period, Caius lets his artistic side flair whenever he returns to Volterra. Him and Athenodora make furs and leathers, that get turned into robes with fur trims, or full blown werewolf fur coats (Aro is particularly giddy when he is gifted one of his own.) The teeth and bones are turned into tools, such as hand-tapping gear, and weaponry, usually used to kill other werewolves. He even saves some of their blood to feed to any starved and feral prisoners within the Volturi walls, knowing the poisonous effect it has when consumed by vampires, and how their bloodlust will prevent them from resisting.
His biggest pieces were placed in one of the Volturi’s trophy/museum themed rooms. There you could find a wolf’s head mounted to a plaque. The other, much grander piece, was a full-scale taxidermied werewolf. If not for the morbidness, it was incredible to behold.
However, something occurs that changes everything. While out clearing out a pack in the middle of a winters night, nearing dawn, and full of his newfound and unjust cockiness as ever, Caius is overwhelmed and attacked by a werewolf. It knocks him off his horse, and the dead corpse pins him to the ground, enough of a distraction for the wolf to charge him, the weight of the wolf clambering over his pinned down leg is enough to shatter his ankle and break his tibia completely.
Its claws rips through his abdomen with ease during their struggle, hands scratching at his chest and neck in its attempt to hold him down, as Caius desperately tries to keep the gigantic open, snapping maw away from his throat, only using his bare hands. He loses two fingers permanently in the process.
It’s only after a swift, last-ditch effort to reach for his blade, is he able to stab the wolf through the side of its mouth once, then shove it through its eye socket. The beast cries out in pain, distracted, and Caius is able to reach his sword and run it into its stomach. It stumbles around, and luck must’ve been on Caius’s side because dawn finally approaches, and he watches through blood-tinted vision as the wolf convulses, grotesquely collapsing into itself as it shifts into its human form. Where its wolf form could’ve taken such an injury, its human side cannot, and instead lays face down in the snow, slowly bleeding out. But Caius fairs no better. Ankle shattered, ribs and shoulder broken, and the inability to do so much as even cry out, the pressure of weight on his throat has crushed his trachea, he can only lie there and wait for death to claim him.
But death does not come. Instead, its Athenodora that finds him, and all but single-handedly carries him back to their ally’s base. He is not only physically mauled and scarred, but emotionally he is damaged beyond belief.
When Caius is well enough physically (only barely being able to stand, now with an amputated leg and a cane), many months later, he removes every trace of werewolf that surrounds him. Every piece that once filled him with pride and triumph, now disturbs him to his core. To look upon it makes him physically ill. In a frenzy of adrenaline-fueled panic, he gathers all the trinkets found in his chambers, empties his closet of fur, rolls up the rug, and once outside he sets it all ablaze, not one single piece or the slightest reminder of it is to re-enter his room ever again. Even the smell of the smoke leaves him sick with fear.
The only thing that remains now of the werewolves within Volterra is the taxidermied werewolf in the trophy room. It is far enough away from Caius’s own quarters that he can’t find the energy to remove it, but he makes sure to avoid that area of the castle like the plague.
Once stung, thrice bitten - Chapter 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AN: Mentions of vampire death but mostly fluff and cuddles. I love how the fandom have just gone, "Vampires purr around their mate when they're content."
Aro had just finished teaching you about the Volturi’s history and you were about to ask what had happened to the Romanians when there was a whoosh and your surroundings vanished in a blur of colour.
Your sight cleared as you were seated on a large bed and the blond Volturi King had his arms wrapped around you. It had taken you some time to become comfortable with the fact that the Volturi Kings were very tactile around you but the Kings showed you that they were willing to follow your lead in this matter and now, here you were, cocooned in Caius’ arms.
"Marcus and Aro have been hogging you," Caius pouted. Behind closed doors (and away from trials and court), Caius could be exactly how Athenodora had described him in the throne room when she had said that he did fantastic impressions of a spoiled toddler.
You heard the whoosh of air and Aro appeared, "Brother, let go of our mate."
Caius pretended not to hear him.
A possessive growl erupted from Aro’s throat and before you could blink, Aro sped over to the bed and hugged your other side.
"Please don’t turn this into a tug of war situation," you begged.
"Am I the only responsible one?" Marcus wondered as he leant on the door frame, "I have been dutifully sitting in Court listening to vampire after vampire plead for their lives to no avail and you both have been fighting over who is able to cuddle our mate."
Aro looked up from where he was resting his head on your shoulder, "There is still room if you want to hold (Name) as well, brother."
A look of temptation crossed Marcus’ face and he took a step forward, "I would be leaving Jane in charge." He murmured regretfully.
Caius reluctantly unwound his arms from around you and he vanished only to reappear seconds later and assume his previous position.
"I took care of it," he stated as he lifted your legs onto his lap and spun you so that your back was to Aro, who immediately wrapped his arms around your torso.
"There is currently no more incessant begging from what has been a rather steady stream of vampires intent on breaking our laws." Caius elaborated when he saw the tempted look return to Marcus’ face.
Marcus was by your side in an instant and he hissed at Aro until Aro relinquished his grip so that you could lay your head on Marcus’ chest. Caius’ fingers began drawing soothing patterns on your shins and Aro’s hand rested possessively over your heart while his head rested on your stomach and you played with his hair.
As you relaxed and grew used to the comfort, all three vampires purred because of your presence.
Request: In the Woods (Caius Volturi x Reader)
WARNING: Dark themes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It had to be something of pure luck that you had escaped. By even more luck, you had stumbled upon the Cullen's, your coven before you were forced into the Volturi. All thanks to Caius that is. You clung to Carlisle's collar. "Please...don't let me go back there...don't let them take me." If you could have cried you would have and Carlisle's heart ached for you.
Alice inhaled sharply, a vision gripping her and pulling her from reality. "I'll kill myself!" You screamed catching the Cullen's and the Volturi off guard, no one more than Caius who growled, taking a step forward. The vision changed suddenly. You locked eyes with Vladimir, relief rushing across your face. The scattered bodies of the decapitated Cullen's surrounding you. Caius snarled. You sprinted towards Vladimir who in turn sprinted towards you. Many guards gave chase as even Caius himself ran after you. You smiled as Vladimir grabbed your head and pulled. There was a 'clink!' and Caius scream before the vision changed once more. Vladimir laughed, holding up your head and showing Stefan what he had done. Stefan's face lit up, laughing before your head was tossed into the nearby fire. The vision changed again with what only could be described as a war. The Romanians had brought their all allies; the Denali, the Amazons, even the Egyptians. Rows upon rows of vampires just as the Volturi had the numbers to match.  Alice was thrown back into reality, the vision ending and the message was clear. They couldn't let you leave the Volturi. For the sake of every vampire in existence and for your own life, you had to be with Caius.
 The guards turned their heads to see their three masters behind them. They silently waited for the order. Aro looked to Caius, who wore a cold expression. "Get them." Caius demanded through a clenched jaw. The leaders had briefed them of the guards of their task and the conditions they expected you to be returned.
Alice caught Carlisle's arm, Edward not far behind her. "We have a problem. We can't take (Y/N) with us. If we do, we'll be dead. I saw it. We need to be tactical about this-" "Even if that means we can't bring them with us today." Edward finished. "You can't just leave me!" You cried out. "We're family!" Alice was about to say something when Alice's eyes glazed over for a moment, stiffening. Jasper was quick to his mates side, taking her arms. Edward turned to Carlisle. "Carlisle-" Alice blinked. "They're looking for them now! They just sent out the guard!" You cried out. "Please, don't leave me here!" Carlisle was quick. "(Y/N), run that way, keep running don't wait for us, don't look back.” You did so, panicked. Running as fast as you could. "Do you really think they'll outrun the guard?" Emmett asked as Esme took Carlisle's hand. "We can only do so much. This is their best chance." "And ours." Alice added.
Everything had gone quiet, or at least, it was quiet for a forest. Other than your footsteps, animals and wind. Thanks to vampirism, you could see in the dark. If you were human, you'd have no chance. You finally stopped to get your bearings. You had kept straight ahead, like Carlisle had said. However you had no idea how far the forest exit was. You didn't feel alone in the forest with every passing moment. You knew it wouldn't be long before the Volturi caught up.
Felix, Demetri, Santiago, the twins and Afton stood at the tree line. "Afton, go straight ahead." Demetri ordered. "Make sure you won't be seen." Within the blink of an eye, Afton was gone and then a whir as he rushed ahead. "We'll cover the left and secure the Cullen's." Jane said. "I'll take the right side." Felix smirked, rolling his shoulders. "I'll follow behind Afton." Demetri said. "They'll be blocked by all exits."
"We are not using Chelsea." Caius said firmly. "There is nothing wrong with our bond. They love me. I know they do. It's their fear and disdain for what we do that stops them." "Brother if we tie, their bind stronger to you- this won't be a problem." Aro tried. "No, it won't. I will not mess with their feelings like that." Caius said sharply. "Yet you are willing to alter their happiness?" Marcus slowly turned his head to Caius. "It's a lesser of two evils. If they understood, I wouldn't have to." Caius replied with gritted teeth. "If you're certain, we'll have Corin sent to (Y/N) as soon as you see necessary." Aro told Caius who curtly nodded.
There was a crunch behind you. Your head whipped around to find Santiago. "Santiago..." You breathed. "Hello, (Y/N)." Santiago said simply. "I'd have hoped to see you on better circumstances." You slowly moved back and he moved forwards in retaliation. "Is he here?" You asked shakily. "He is waiting for us." Santiago replied. "Who is 'us'?" You asked stiffly. "The guard, myself and you." He answered. You shook your head. "I'm not going anywhere with you. I'm not going back there." Santiago sighed. "Then what choice do I have? We've been ordered to retrieve you alive but that doesn't mean we can't hurt you." Santiago said and he moved slowly towards you. "You've upset Caius quite a bit, (Y/N)."
Santiago lunged, grabbing you by the arms. You tore yourself out of his grip and pushed him back with a snarl. He growled as he moved again, he was quicker. Angrier. You cried out in pain when you suddenly felt pain in the side of your neck and head. You felt the cracks slowly travel along the area. You fell to your knees, hand to your neck as your vision blurred momentarily.
Something within you snapped as Santiago moved forward once more. You rolled away from him before jumping to your feet and throwing everything you had into a punch. Clink! Your jaw dropped as Santiago's head detached and fell to the ground. You couldn't believe it. You had never hurt a vampire before and you nearly killed Santiago with one hit. You had no idea what to do in that moment. It's not like you didn't like Santiago, could you just leave him and hope someone finds him? You groaned, rubbing the back of your neck and feeling the cracks beginning to heal.
Suddenly, a scent hit your nostrils as you heard clapping behind you. You spun on your heels to be faced with Felix who was slowly approaching. "Did you just rip off Santiago's head?" Felix asked, looking at the decapitated body of Santiago, his head a few feet away. "Uh, no?" You furrowed your brow. It was a bold-faced lie. Although Felix wasn't known for his brain. "I'm not even angry, I'm just impressed. He's one of our best-as you know. How did you do that?" "I punched him in the head." You replied. "You punched him in the head!? Damn. That must have been one hell of a punch."  "I didn't mean to...I was afraid." You said quietly. "No!" Felix said sharply. "Stand your ground. Stick up for yourself, kid! Don't crumble now!" Felix moved forward, standing next to Santiago's body and giving his shoulder a quick nudge with his foot. Felix sighed. "Although that is quite a number you've done to my friend, (Y/N)." "Felix..." You ground out. "Why are you here?" "I came here to being you back. " Suddenly, before you could even think about it. You lashed out, punching Felix in the face. His head whipped to the side as he grunted, a low growl rumbling in the back of his throat. He lifted his head to look at you. You nearly jumped when Felix suddenly yelled loudly. "Now that's what I'm talking about!" You took off running. "Come on, (Y/N)! Woo!" Felix gave chase.
After some time Felix caught up with you. What made matters worse was that you had were completely lost. You had tried everything, running into bushes, plants, trees. Everything to create distance or even make him confused but his eyes were trained on you and he was always right behind you. As you moved back, Felix moved forward. "You don't have to do this." You pleaded. "Actually, yeah. I do. Don't worry, I won't bring you back to Caius with your hair an absolute mess." Felix reached out smoothing and fixing your hair. "You really don't deserve this, kid. You know orders though. Caius wants to make sure you'll never pull a stunt like this again." You had no fighting experience. Caius didn't think it necessary. Felix, on the other hand, had fighting as both a hobby and his profession for centuries. So you did the only thing you could think to do. As juvenile as it was...it had a chance of working.
You aimed high, right between his legs. He immediately groaned, crumpling to his knees and doubled over.  You took off running once more. "That was a perfect shot." Felix groaned. Suddenly Demetri was beside Felix. "What are you doing!? They're getting away!" "They got me in the crown jewels, what do you want from me?" Felix groaned back. Demetri sighed in frustration before he took off running after you.
You stopped running, changing to a walk to try and reserve some kind of energy. Your neck reminding you to go easy. You should have fed before you left but you couldn't wait. You had your opportunity and took it. However it wasn't long before your senses caught into something. As far as your eyes were concerned, you were alone. Although your ears sensed otherwise. You couldn't let on that you knew someone was behind you and threw a 'meaningless' glance over your shoulder, you saw nothing as expected. That left you with only one conclusion given the footsteps behind you were slightly out of time with your own. It wouldn't be enough for a human to have picked up but your vampire senses latched onto it. You didn't dare stop walking, if you did, the person would likely strike. Although this wasn't just any person. It was a guard. You were more than certain that Afton Volturi was behind you.
You closed your eyes, concentrating hard on the footsteps. He was arms length. Gradually getting closer as he almost matched your footsteps. You stopped a few feet away from a twig. The same twig, snapped behind you. "There you are." You whispered before throwing your fist back ad hard as you could. It hit him. He, still invisible, fell to the ground with a small groan. You wasted no time kicking leaves at him. Finally, you had an outline. Before he could move, you pounced, hitting him with everything you had. "Show yourself!" You demanded over and over again until he did so. Cracks were all over his face and that was when you stopped your brutal assault. "Good choice, you wouldn't have made it back to Chelsea, otherwise." You growled. "You can ask Santiago about that later." Afton choked on his short, laugh. "No wonder he chose you." He said as best he could manage. "You're just like him." Something about being compared to how awful Caius was made something within you snap. You growled and snapped his neck just as quickly. You let Afton off easy, perhaps too easy but if you did anymore damage, you'd only prove him right.
However you barely got a hundred yards away before you were yanked from behind. Demetri had caught up to you quickly and grabbed you by the neck. "You think you're winning. You think that you'll get out of here but you won't. You will only have the consequences of your actions because your precious Cullen's will pay the price for it." You panicked. "N-No. Don't hurt them." You managed out. "You hurt them, (Y/N). This is all your fault." You kicked his stomach, hard, making him double over and let you go. You took off running. Although even with that kick, he was still catching up to you. He's faster than you. That was hard to forget in that moment. He was expecting you to take sharp corners or try to outrun him. He picked up speed. You did the only thing you could think off that would use his speed to his advantage.  Just as he was about to grab you, you flung yourself to the ground curling into a ball. Demetri tripped over you immediately, landing before you. That was when you took off running once more. This time to your left. That didn't last long either as it seemed you had run right into Alec. You took a sharp right.
Just as you lost Demetri and Alec, you seemed to had found Felix who was immediately calling after you. "No, no, no, no!" You muttered hurriedly to yourself, determined to find an escape route. "You know I've actually missed you, (Y/N)!" Felix called out, slowly approaching you. "You've punched me in the face and kicked me where it hurts and now I like you more! How weird is that!?"  You sat with Caius on a couch, head resting upon his shoulder when a thought occurred to you. When had you become so happy? You recalled being miserable. Wishing you could cry for just maybe that would release some of the built up tension and pain you were enduring. Yet one day it did. All of your misery had just stopped which left you only the feeling of content. For unexplainable reasons that thought itched at you. As thought you were trying to remember something important. You raised your head slowly. "What is it, my love?" Caius asked softly. His arm was wrapped around your shoulders and his hand traced idle patterns upon your shoulder blade. "I'm trying to remember something." You said quietly. "From when you were human?" He asked. It was the most logical answer. Once turned into a vampire, your memory was perfect at recalling every moment. There was no forgetting even the smallest details as a vampire. Slowly you shook your head. "No...I just..." You trailed off looking around."... everything is perfect." You finally found the correct words. Caius cracked a smile. "Well isn't that a good thing? You deserve nothing less, my love." "But it's not realistic." You retorted. "Since when is everything in the world so perfect? It just occurred to me that one day I was simply happier than I had ever been, when before I had been miserable." "You've adapted to the circumstances. You understand now." "Do I though?" You shot back. "I don't know what changed. I..." Caius stopped tracing patterns along your back, his expression unreadable. "...I think something is wrong." You finished.
Alec, Demetri and Afton were behind you. Felix to your right. That meant only Santiago and Jane were unaccounted for and there were only two guards. You sprinted away as fast as you can and much to your surprise, briefly, they didn't follow. That's when you reminded yourself that they were toying with you. The cliff you were sprinting towards had become a beacon of hope. The guard had made a mistake. They enjoyed the hunt too much and made mistakes. Or at least that's what you had thought until Jane moved into your line of sight and stood between you and the cliff. You stopped immediately.
"It wasn't a bad idea." Jane said. "Jumping off the cliff but it's an easy escape route. Too easy." "Jane..." You whispered under your breath. "Unfortunately for you, I stand in your way." Jane said simply. "Why are you doing this to me?" You said weakly. "I have my orders." She replied, her tone full of innocence that simply wasn’t real. Not for Jane. "Do us both a favour and come with me quietly." "No." You said firmly. "Good. I never liked cooperative ones. It's a bore." Jane said.
You lay against Caius' chest. One hand rested upon his chest, his own overlapping yours and his other hand idly drew patterns upon your bare spine and shoulder blade. It was the first time you had ever been intimate with him and given what you could have sworn was a sound like a purr in the back of his throat, Caius was pleased. You looked up at him. Sure enough, his eyes were soft, a small smile upon his face. "You look happy." You said softly. Caius turned his head towards you. "I am happy." "Why?" You asked. "Other than what just took place?" Caius smirked. "I have you in my bed, in my arms no less. For eternity it'll be you and I. How could I not be happy about that?"
You screamed as agony rushed through your head and down every part of your body. You tried to remember that Jane's gift was simply an illusion. You weren't actually hurt. Jane was manipulating you into thinking you were. Every fibre of your being told you to go limp, curl up and hope for the agony to subside. It hushed your mind, begging you to do anything for the pain to stop. You couldn't listen to it. No matter how much that instinct screamed at you, you couldn't listen. Your survival depended on that. For a brief moment, you recalled how Jane stood over you, on the cliff. Your mind clouded by the agony, you reminded yourself once more you could move and you had to. You had to do something. Under any circumstances, you could not give in. So you didn't and did the first thing that came to mind. It took almost all of your brain power to move against the pain and kick Jane hard in the stomach. She was caught off guard as she stumbled back, falling off the edge with a yelp. Suddenly the pain was gone and your muscles begged you to rest. However there wasn't any time for that. You groaned as you moved to a stand. Your muscles protest before they too seemed realise that nothing was wrong. You wasted no time taking off running. By that time, you barely caught Jane's scream. "Alec!"
You finally stopped running. You needed a plan. Something to stop you walking into your own demise. You needed to think back upon everything. As it stood you had seen Jane, Santiago, Afton, Demetri and Felix. Jane screamed for Alec. There was no doubt Demetri was around. He was the tracker. They aren't grouped. They are already out. You knew that because you always found at least one of them no matter which way you turned. That would also have explain why Felix has been toying with you. He's under no rush to get you. He must know you're surrounded. You have been injured. Your neck no less. You put a hand to your neck. It had healed but without blood, it'll remain a weakness. It's easy to hurt. You can only run so much. You bit your lip as the thought hit you. There's a chance you could catch them surprise but it would have to be a perfect shot. The head. Their reaction times will be quicker and they will be a difficult target. Anything other than a head shot will not be enough to reasonably slow them down. Perhaps find the Cullen's, strength in numbers. No. That wouldn't work. The guard are still stronger and if they have you surrounded then it's likely they already have the Cullen's. The guard are prepared and have centuries of training. You have no training at all. They have the advantage. If you make a run for it, it's more than likely someone like Alec will come up behind you, already having been watching you.
You could picture it, seeing the edge of freedom before being yanked back by Alec before everything goes black. Next option would be hiding. Tree tops, forest floor, underground. All that is needed is a sense of smell. All of it is open, nothing to use even as a barricade or something to block your scent. No tight corners to tuck yourself into. Day or night is irrelevant, vampires can see in both. In that case, the best case scenario was that they eventually gave in or got memory loss and forgot why they were in there. Both were unlikely outcomes. Furthermore it would mean you had to reside the rest of your existence in that hiding place. Swapping one prison for another. Could try spreading your scent, confuse them. You've tried that before. Demetri's gift will eventually figure out the strength of the scent and eventually, you. If you bury yourself and eventually your scent underground it means their isn't much moving space. If they figure out you were there-. You couldn't finish the thought, your imagination running wild as you pictured being dragged out of the ground, screaming, by Felix. Tree tops, that's only a matter of time until someone finds you. They'll search high and low. The more time passes, the more the guard are closing in and you were running out of time. How long before Caius grows impatient and sends even more guards? Sooner or later the guard will find you. Once they are all here, it is over. Felix, Demetri and Santiago are collectively bigger, strong and faster. The twins are more powerful. Still, none of that includes the major advantage of their experience. You can't run, you can't hide and you certainly can't wait. That was a lot of endings, all with the same outcome. That left you with an impossible yet unexpected ending, even for the guard. One that will still likely going to end in failure but a better chance than any of the rest. You couldn't believe what you were thinking. You couldn't run, hide or wait. So what was the only option? The answer was in three simple words. Ones that were difficult to stomach, given the circumstances. Take them out.
"Choose your next words very carefully." Caius said lowly, his eyes narrowing on you. "You don't love me. You never have." "How dare you!?" He snapped. "How dare you say such a thing after everything you and I have shared!" "The Cullen's were right, you manipulated me." You said hurriedly. "Don't listen to them!" Caius stormed up to you, eyes full of fury. "They are clueless. You know me better than them, than anyone!”
It wasn’t long until they had boxed you in. You couldn’t get them to split again. You were surrounded by them. Santiago, Afton, Demetri, Jane, Alec and Felix. "Playtime is over now." Jane said. "Caius will be growing impatient." You shook your head in frustration, stepping back and your heels hit a fallen tree trunk. "It's time to bring you home." Alec said. "Although, for old times sake..." Felix said as he and the twins smirked. "...Run." Jane said simply. "One last chase." Demetri smirked slightly. "Oh...well then." You said before throwing a fallen tree trunk at the twins.  They weren't quick enough to dodge it. The two grunted in pain, falling to the ground when the tree trunk hit the twins in the face. "To the face!" Felix yelled, as though cheering you on even as you took off running.
You heard their footsteps behind you almost immediately. You pushed forward with everything you had. Your freedom depended on it. "You can't control me, Caius!" Your echoed wail rang out in your head, recalling the man who wanted you at his mercy. "Can't I?" He had replied, seemingly not even bothered by your growing distress. You couldn't let him win. You couldn't prove him right. "No matter what you think, I do love you and I always will." That couldn't be love. Having you bound to him couldn't be love. You knew you loved Caius on your own but you knew it wasn't all you that was in control. You knew it when you recognised Corin seemed to appear almost routinely. Whenever you began to question, she was there and suddenly you couldn’t really remember why you were questioning things in the first place. This happiness wasn't entirely yours. It was artificial and you knew it. Once you began to see things a little clearer, once the rose-tinted glasses had faded, you knew you had to find out for yourself. So you smiled at Caius with every waking moment. Enjoyed everything he had to offer. Seek him out as he sought you out. Whilst inside, remember why you struggled so much. With each passing day you remembered how brutal Caius could be. How much he demanded from the world and how he forced your respect. You were under his control and in the end, you were his prize. So with each passing day you didn't kick, you didn't scream and you smiled. Letting yourself love him and letting the reality slowly creepy back into your mind. Although even with all of that, two things didn't change in the end. One: you still loved Caius with every fibre of your being. Two: Demetri was still faster than you.
You were tackled to the ground with a screech, Demetri pressed your head into the ground. Your eyes widened as you sucked in an unneeded breath. It was over. "No! No!" You screamed. Suddenly you couldn't feel your legs. You screamed in fear, knowing what came next didn't make it any less horrible. "Relax kid, it's over." You heard Felix as he stood over you. Your screams began to die down before your eyes glazed over.
You came to on the ground. Although you weren't surrounded by trees anymore. Instead, it was legs. Demetri and Felix stood on either side of you and when you looked up, you locked eyes with ones lit up in fury. Caius took a few steps forward. "Back to where we started. You and me...and you're on the wrong side." You swallowed. He was angry, even if it barely showed upon his face. You looked down, unable to speak or even look him in the eyes. "Keep looking at me! Don't look away!" Caius snapped and you lifted your gaze to him once more. Aro stepped forward with a sweet smile. "Don't you see? We have done you a kindness." Aro said sweetly, sickeningly sweet. "If anyone else found you, they'd have killed you slowly and painfully. You're lucky that it is us. What better way to show you than be a little...rough." Is that what you were to think of it? A warning rather than the guard playing games with you and a man hunt in general?
 You looked around to see the Cullen's also being held by the Volturi. Panic began to set in. "Please..." You whimpered. "Please what?" Caius said icily. "Please don't bring me back there!" You cried out. "Y-you can't! Don't make me go back there! I don't want anyone forcing me to feel anything anymore!" You tried to bolt, take one last dash in hopes of escaping but Felix and Demetri had stepped in before you could. You screamed in terror.
Caius couldn't believe what was happening before his eyes. He watched as Felix and Demetri forcibly pinned you down. All the while you cried out in hysterics. He couldn't believe what was happening before him and it filled him with rage. Caius moved forward. "Why are you being like this? You're coming home!" He shouted, trying to get through to you. You struggled against the hold the two guards had upon you. Crying out as though terrified. Caius couldn't help but think of all the days before you left. You seemed happy, smiling at him. Giving in and enjoying every little second and touch given by him. The smiles you shared, the kisses, the laughs. Everything. Yet here you were now, screaming in terror at the very thought of returning to him. It only made him more angry as he longed for those moments now more than ever.
Caius stepped in between your legs, pinning you down himself, the other two guards releasing their hold as Caius pulled your hands into his own between your chests. Caius leaned down pressing his forehead against yours mumbling to you only words you could hear beyond your cries and sobs that held no tears. You begged him. Begged him to let you go. Yet he didn't want to hear it. "Wake up!" He said loudly, over your cries. "Whatever fantasy you're clinging to- wake up! You were happy! I'm bringing you home! They aren’t your home!" This only seemed to make you cry more, despite no tears being able to fall. Unable to make your pleas be heard.
His hair had fallen onto your face at both sides as he continued to try to get through to you. "I'd rather die than go back there!" You cried out and Caius groaned, hiding his face into the side of your own, hurt by the words and even more so, frightened. "This is not you! This is not you!" He yelled before straightening his back. "This is you!" He growled at Carlisle. "What have you done to my mate!?" Caius bellowed in fury. "What have you done to them!? What have you done to them!?" Caius got no response so he turned back to you. "What did he do!?" He yelled. You tried to maneuver your wrists and hands free from his grip but failed when Caius tightened his grip on them. Borderline painfully. He groaned in pain, clearly trying to cover his own emotions. "Oh my mate, my poor mate." His pained words muffled against the side of your face once more. He straightened up again. "Get Chelsea!" Caius screamed. You shrieked in protest as you tried to kick him off but he was stronger and more experienced. "You're confused and I'm going to make it better." He said to you before returning to mumble of his 'poor mate'.
Chelsea was quick. She didn't even have to be told what to do. At the sight of her you tried to wriggle out of Caius' hold again begging him to stop. All the while, Caius continued to tell you that it was for the best and it would all be alright. Chelsea began to speak to you quietly and slowly you grew quiet. Quiet sobs escaping you. Caius pulled you to sit up by your hands and held you close. Chelsea continued to speak to you quietly as Caius weaved his fingers into your hair, your head pressed against his chest. He glared at Carlisle, with every bit of hatred he had in him. Chelsea straightened and took her leave.
You cries were miniscule. Although you didn't fight Caius off. Instead, you clung to him. "Caius, why don't you take dear (Y/N) to your private quarters? They need you right now." Aro suggested with a sickeningly sweet tone. You struggled to really pay attention to what was happening after that.
As Caius left with you along with Chelsea and Afton, Aro looked to the Cullen's. "Aro, we were just passing through." Carlisle began and Aro raised his hand. "I know, my dear friend. The timing of this was inconvenient. I apologise for this. This is a rather difficult situation for you. We'll have this issue tied up in no time." Aro reassured Carlisle. His words seemed comforting, however they were called into question when he softly said. "Alec?"
Before Carlisle could react, Aro had his head in his hands and twisted. Clink! Esme screamed before she, as well as her family dropped to the ground. Felix and Demetri moved towards Emmett and Jasper. Two resounding clinks were heard. Demetri moved towards Esme. Clink! Felix grabbed Rosalie. Clink! Felix and Demetri hesitated at the three remaining Cullen's. Alice, Edward and Bella. "Go on." Aro said softly before turning to Marcus. Clink! Clink! Clink! Aro sighed. "Such a waste of gifts, Caius best appreciate this." "Why have you done this?" Marcus asked looking at the bodies of the Cullen's. Aro replied. "With Chelsea's influence they'll never leave again. However this is incentive, they'll have no one to remind them where they came from and no one to turn to. After all...Carlisle did originally decide to help them. A betrayal to us." Marcus slowly nodded.
The next clear thing to you was when you lay in Caius' arms, in his bed. He had your face buried in his chest, his arms around you as the two of you lay on your sides. "You will be alright now." Caius said quietly. The most you could really do was grip the back of his shirt. Every now and then you subconsciously pressed into him breathing in his scent. Each time Caius would quietly purr, holding you tighter. "I nearly lost you." He whispered between deep breaths, breathing in your scent with another squeeze that he quickly returned after your own.
Did the volturi ever meet Hypatia. The first pagan female philosopher? What are their thought about her?
• — 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐬, 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐫, 𝐨𝐡 𝐦𝐲.
The chances of them meeting Hypatia is rather slim, seeing as though they were in the middle of a rather large military campaign against The Romanian coven at the time. I imagine they spent little time in her area of the world. Had she lived a century later The Volturi might have ran into her when they waged a short-lived war against The Egyptian Coven.
Corin would have for sure found Hypatia interesting, knowing her she would most likely have spent days upon days picking the humans brain for all sorts of knowledge she had unearthed.
what's so great about Marcus' gift? like, what makes it so beneficial to Aro? if Aro can already read every thought a person has had, why would he ever need Marcus to tell him (checks notes) ah yes, "these two are dating"? I can't work out what's so powerful about Marcus and I just wondered if you'd break it down for me
Ah, but here's the question, what are thoughts and what is the truth?
Aro reads every thought a person has ever had, he knows you better than you know yourself, certainly better than anyone else ever will. But he sees the world the way that you see it. What if you're wrong? What if you're biased?
Marcus, presumably, sees relationships as they are. He sees the network of relationships to a person: all the people connected to you in ways that you might not have ever recognized or acknowledged even to yourself. If someone is in love with you, and you're clueless, Marcus sees that in an instant; Aro may not pick up on it.
Marcus also sees all of this very quickly and at a distance. In early days, when the Volturi were actively at war with the Egyptians and the Romanians, this provided vital intelligence when Aro couldn't physically touch someone.
Marcus was probably the one to inform Aro that Amun was the weak link in the Egyptian coven: he would sell out his coven in return for his own survival.
Still, even in the modern age when you can't say "no" to touching Aro's hand, Marcus' gift is still very useful for the first reason. It provides very fast intelligence from a different angle than Aro's. Marcus can support or refute conclusions Aro draws from his own gift.
Case in point, Edward Cullen.
We don't know exactly what Aro sees in Edward's head, but presumably it's 100 years of Midnight Sun. Aro likely walks out of that brain thinking that something's not right, and he can guess what really happened, but it's hard to tell what's true and what's not. Especially where Bella Swan is concerned. Does this girl truly love Edward, as Edward believes? Is Bella Swan even a person at all or just this empty shell of a being Edward has projected upon? And what about the coven in general? What are their actual relationships? Surely, it's not whatever Edward thinks it is.
Aro actively touches Marcus' hand in meeting Bella in order to gain that vital second opinion. What the hell is up with these two? And the answer, well, whatever he saw made him say, "Wow, can't believe you haven't eaten her yet, Edward. Wow." And Bella thinks, "Ah, yes, our love is amazing."
TL;DR Aro sees us as we see the world and ourselves, Marcus has the ability to see what we ourselves do not see or do not acknowledge
Why the Volturi are necessary
In the world of Twilight, vampires are insanely powerful. They’re faster than the human eye can detect, strong enough that they could easily tear down mountains if they wanted to, they have eyesight and hearing more sophisticated than anything modern technology has been able to replicate, they have crystal clear memory, and they’re nearly indestructible. And some vampires have gifts that make them even more ridiculously powerful.
Now let’s take a moment to imagine what the world of Twilight would look like if no one is keeping these people in check.
Humans would be killed in broad daylight whenever a vampire was hungry, and vampires are infamously hungry all the time. Immortal children would be commonplace, as they very much were before being outlawed. Massacres would occur without consequences.
And with no one to stop the newborn wars from spreading, they would spread to cover the world.
Humanity would be hunted to extinction. It might take centuries, but that would inevitably happen.
The Volturi are what keeps this from happening.
Keeping the secret forces vampires to hunt subtly, which means selectively and not in excess. Immortal children couldn’t be taught, so they’re outlawed altogether. They kept the newborn wars from spreading, and force those who insist on mass producing newborns to keep those newborns on the right side of the law. Children of the Moon are feral and lose their human consciousness when they transform, and hunt humans, making them a huge threat to the secret in addition to being a threat to vampires. And so the Volturi drove them extinct.
The Volturi are not afraid to be harsh. They have no reason not to be, for starters, the thought that executions are inhumane and inherently a bad punishment for criminals is extremely recent, and very Western. The Volturi created their law in a time when the capital punishment was common for humans as well, and most vampires we meet in canon are from cultures were this was absolutely an acceptable punishment.
More, the capital punishment is the only sanction vampires will actually respect. You break the law, and the Volturi kill you. That’s all there is to it. Other punishments are meaningless to vampires.
I’m sure some are now thinking, well, maybe in the past, but the humans can fight back now, right? After all, that was what Aro’s whole speech in Breaking Dawn was about.
Except, in a scenario where the modern world found out about vampires, what exactly would the humans do? We have nukes and warheads, yes, I imagine those can actually do a vampire in. But that requires actually hitting the vampire. Vampires are insanely fast, and can see and hear from an incredibly long range (a range I doubt the human militaries would realize, vampires surpass any other known organism). They would comfortably move out of the way. Maybe the humans would get to kill a few vampires, and they might turn the world into a nuclear wasteland, but they would not win.
I think Aro was lying. Giving the rebels a little scare. And he got away with it because most vampires have no idea what humans are doing at any given point. They only interact with humans to eat them, but they will have seen the truly daunting technology humans have come up with. I don’t think they’d look too critically into this one.
If the humans can make televisions, phones, and wipe out entire cities with a single bomb, then they can do fearsome things indeed and it’s in everybody’s best interest to heed the law.
To put it this way, we know Aro got away with it, because if he hadn’t then Carlisle’s friends would have been tearing his speech to pieces in Breaking Dawn. Instead it didn’t occur to them.
Now, the meta could end here, but my above babble begs the question: how come the world got by before the Volturi? Plenty of civilizations flourished, after all, for thousands of years.
Amun and the Romanians offer us a glimpse of what the world was like before the Volturi. Amun was a member of the Egyptian coven, and together they formed the Egyptian pantheon. The humans worshipped them as gods. The Romanians were worshipped too, humans were brought before them as sacrifice.
In other words, vampires were known to humans and had a place in society.
And at the time I think they were not so many, because if they were then there wouldn’t be a Twilight saga in the first place, but they were growing.
I think Aro saw the writing on the wall, realized that humans come in finite supply. It is a very mad thing, after all, to sit down and say, “You know what, I’m going to make the world forget that vampires exist. That seems like a great way to pass my eternal existence.”
And I was going to make this one long meta, but it ended up being a two-in-one so I’ll be posting this first half as a part one instead.
To summarize, though: given the insane power of the Twilight vampires, if they were left unchecked they would destroy our known civilization (good luck having governments, infrastructure, and institutions in a world of rampant killing machines) and eventually the world itself. Should the Volturi fall, the world would effectively end. Their methods may be harsh, but the world can’t afford for them not to be.
(There’s a part two to this meta, as I put on my tinfoil hat.)
I wish you were my mummy
Tumblr media
Word Count: 6,325 Demetri x Child OC x Swan OC Warnings: Fluff, Angst
Polly was only covering for their usual secretary Gianna, who had been given time off to say goodbye to her dying mother, who sadly passed whilst she was there and Aro had kindly extended her time off to allow her to bury her mother.
Polly wanted immortality but knew once Gianna returned from leave, she would likely be killed as she would no longer serve a purpose, so she came up with an idea to seduce one of the guards, hoping that he would care enough to change her instead of allowing her to be killed when the time came. Her idea evolved after she overheard some of the guards talking about Renesmee Cullen, a half vampire / half human child.
Demetri was known to be friendly and somewhat flirty with the fairer sex but had never taken a secretary to bed before as there was always a chance, a small chance but a chance nonetheless that they could be turned and he’d have to see them every day. After a week or two of Polly’s shameless flirting with him, he decided to sleep with her knowing Aro had decided Polly would be killed upon Gianna’s return…Polly wasn’t that good at her job and Aro liked Gianna as she was very efficient. As arranged, following guard duty one Friday evening he knocked on Polly’s door and entered to find her dressed in very little.
To say Demetri was shocked when he discovered Polly was pregnant with his child was an understatement, he had been careful, used protection…he made sure of it. Unknown to him Polly had lied, she wasn’t on birth control and after he left her room, she attempted to impregnate herself using a turkey baster and the contents of his discarded condom. ‘hopefully this works’ she thought to herself having seen this technique work in a TV show she had seen recently.
Once Demetri found out about the pregnancy, he went to see Aro, who read his thoughts and was curious as to how Polly had conceived a baby when the tracker had been so careful. Upon reading Polly’s thoughts, he discovered her deception and was less than pleased. He informed Demetri of his discovery and it was decided once the baby was born, Polly would not be turned.
Heidi’s doctor friend who looks after the secretaries when they’re ill came to the castle and delivered the baby, Heidi acting as the nurse. Demetri and Felix waited outside of Polly’s room “I’ll ‘take care’ of Polly, if the birth doesn’t kill her” Felix said low “I don’t care how you do it Fe, she’s nothing to me” Demetri replied coldly, he hadn’t forgiven her despite her pleas for him to do so. He liked the idea of being a father and hoped he’d get the chance once he met his mate…if she was human, that is. He envied Edward Cullen a little, because he got to have a family with his mate, unlike him who was tricked into it.
Demetri loved his son the moment he saw him, noticing his son blue eyes; the blue eyes he had back when he was human. Demetri made his way to the throne room to introduce the Kings to his son “Masters, I would like to introduce you to my son Luca Marcus Volturi” Marcus smiled wide when he heard the baby’s name and was happy that Demetri had honoured him that way. Aro and Caius were also happy as they saw the light return to their brother’s eyes the moment the tracker had spoken. Aro knew that Marcus was close to Demetri as he had been his brother’s personal bodyguard for a millennia as well as the two sharing a love of history and the Arts.
Heidi and Jane helped Demetri look after Luca when Demetri was on duty, which wasn’t as often as Aro wanted to ensure Demetri and Luca bonded as it was just the two of them and Carlisle had mentioned how quickly Renesmee had changed in the first few months after she was born.
Aro received word that the Romanian coven had turned a number of humans in an attempt to rebuild their coven. The informant didn’t know numbers or where they were based but didn’t want to wait to find out, in case they decided to start a war.
Aro called Demetri, Felix and the twins to the throne room and explained the situation “I’m sorry Demetri but I need you track the Romanians and their ‘creations.’ I will need you to go with Felix and the twins to do so and I don’t know how long this mission will last” “I understand master. May I make a small request?” Demetri asked “Of course” Aro replied “I would like to ask Carlisle and Esme to take care of Luca in my absence as they have experience in raising children and I know Heidi will be busy arranging ‘tours.’ I will drop Luca off myself before meeting back up with Felix and the twins” “That is a reasonable request and it makes the most sense, although I will miss the little one dearly” Marcus replied, Aro and Caius nodding in agreement.
“Hello Carlisle, it’s Demetri. I hope you and your family are well” Demetri greeted once Carlisle answered the phone “Hello Demetri, we are well thank you, hope you are well too.” He replied. “I’m well too. I became a father recently…” “Congratulations, I wasn’t aware you had found your mate” Carlisle said cutting him off “Thank you. I haven’t found my mate…it’s complicated. I’ll explain when I see you” Demetri replied “Are you coming to visit, to check on Renesmee?” “Not exactly. I need help, a favour really from Esme and yourself” “I understand. How can we help you?” “I have to leave on a mission for the Kings and am not sure how long I will be away for and was hoping that you and Esme might agree to look after Luca for me. You have experience with raising children and I trust you to look after him” “Of course we will. Esme will be happy to have a little one in the house again” Carlisle told him “I bet” Demetri chuckled “When was you thinking of bringing him over?” “Within the next day or so, I apologise for the short notice” “That’s not a problem. Esme and I are leaving tomorrow morning for a short break, we’ll only be gone for a few days but Rosalie and Bella can look after him till we get back” “Thank you Carlisle, it’s appreciated. Enjoy your time away” “Thank you and look forward to seeing you soon” Carlisle and Demetri ended the call.
Carlisle told Esme and their children about Demetri’s phone call and that Luca would be coming to stay, Esme’s eyes lit up at the thought of having a baby in the house again ‘I know my wife so well’ he thought to himself. “When is Demetri dropping Luca off?” Esme asks “In the next day or two. He is aware that we are away for a few days but I said that Rose and Bella will look after him until we return” Carlisle responded “Why would you agree to that? He’s a Volturi” Rosalie asked not sounding very happy “Despite Demetri being an elite guard for the Volturi, he and I always got along even after I left the castle. I see him as a friend and he has asked for our help in caring for his son and I agreed” Carlisle answered her “Why do Bella and I have to care for him?” “Because Carlisle and I are away for a few days and you both have experience with looking after children” Esme replied this time. The Cullen teenagers were not happy but knew better than to argue seeing as the decision had been made.
Luca is three weeks old when Demetri drops him off at the Cullen house. Luca is able to talk and crawl, developing quickly as Renesmee had a few years before. Edward opened the door and greeted Demetri and led him inside the house. “Esme has set the travel cot up for Luca in the guest room” “Carlisle mentioned that Esme had kept hold of it, just in case it was ever needed again. Thank you” Demetri replied. Demetri put the small suitcase with Luca’s clothes and a few toys in the hallway and followed Edward upstairs. “Thank you Bella for helping look after Luca until Esme gets back, it’s much appreciated” Demetri said with a smile “That’s ok” Bella replied and took Luca from Demetri. Once he knew Luca was ok with Bella and Edward, he said goodbye to his son, kissing the top of his head and left to meet Felix and the twins.
An hour later Bella put Luca down for a nap and waited for her sister Elena to arrive. As Elena made her way to the family room, she heard the voices of her sister and the Cullens. It sounded like they were arguing “Jasper and I are not ‘playing house’ with the baby. If I wanted a baby I would adopt one” Alice said firmly, Jasper nodded and added “Don’t get us wrong we love Ness and would do anything for her, but Luca…Luca is not family.” “Who’s Luca?” Elena asked, curious. Bella and the Cullens turned to look at her. “Luca is the hybrid son of a friend of Carlisle’s and we have been asked to look after him until he and Esme return” “Oh ok, that’s the baby Esme said was coming to stay for a bit. So, what’s the problem?” “His dad is an Elite Guard for the Volturi” Emmett answered her, his tone wasn’t pleasant. The argument about who would look after Luca resumed.
“I can’t believe you lot, you won’t help out a friend of Carlisle’s just because you don’t like his ‘family’…” “It’s not just that. We’re not very fond of him either” Bella says cutting Elena off “Ok, you don’t like his father much either but Luca’s just a baby and you’re refusing to look after him. From what Esme told me, the baby’s father is without a mate and trusted you lot to look after his son while she was away” Elena replied “Well Alice and Jasper aren’t interested in ‘playing house’ with him. I have plans with Edward, Jake and Ness and don’t need the added complication of a baby” Bella said as she crossed her arms over her chest. “Wouldn’t Ness like a playmate or something I mean, he’s a hybrid like her?” “I said NO” Bella replies glaring at her sister. “Well, he needs someone to look after him. You can’t leave him home alone” Elena argued back and turned to look at Rosalie “For someone who misses being able to have children, I can’t believe you are turning down the opportunity to care for him. I mean you have experience of looking after a hybrid” Silence fills the room for a moment “HOW DARE YOU…” Rosalie begins “NO! HOW DARE YOU?” Elena shouts back “Considering his family moto is ‘The Volturi don’t give second chances,’ they have given you all multiple chances in the past due to the actions of my sister and Edward and you can’t be repay them with a simple act of kindness. It’s disgusting, and you say they’re monsters. You’re refusing to look after a baby, an innocent baby despite Carlisle giving his word that the baby would be cared for whilst he and Esme were away for a few days” Elena adds eyeing the Cullens with distain. “You don’t understand…” Emmett starts but Elena cut him off “I understand perfectly. You’re all selfish assholes. I mean I know about your world, which we all know breaks their most basic law and unlike Bella I don’t have a reason to become immortal…so I’m dead when they find out. You really have learnt nothing over the past few years” Elena doesn’t wait for a response and makes her way upstairs to the guest room to check on Luca.
She enters the room to see a baby boy asleep in the travel crib, he appears to be older than he should be ‘vampire genes’ she thought to herself. After a few moments Luca’s eyes flutter open and she notices his blue eyes looking up at her. He sits up and raises his arms “Up please” He says with a smile on his face. Elena smiles back and lifts him up into her arms. “Hello Luca, I’m Elena. It’s nice to meet you” “And you” He replies softly and rested his head on her shoulder, she breathed his scent ‘Aww, he has that new baby smell’ she thought smiling “Daddy does too that when we cuddle” Luca told her “Sorry, you just have that new baby smell” She told him, her cheeks a little flushed “You smell nice too” He replied low.
A door slammed downstairs and she felt Luca flinch in her arms “How about a sleepover at my house? It’ll be quiet there as my dad is working tonight” She asked and he nodded “I don’t like the shouting” He replied softly “Me neither.” Elena put Luca on the bed and collapsed the travel crib and gathered his things “Stay right there sweetie, I’ll be right back” “Ok” He replied and watched Elena go downstairs. Elena put the crib and his suitcase in the trunk of her car and made her way back inside to collect Luca. She picked him up off the bed and went downstairs with him in her arms “What are you doing?” Bella asked just Elena reached the front door “Taking Luca to my house to look after him. It’s quiet there” She replied and walked out of the house to see Emmett putting Ness’ car seat in her car “I figured you’d need it” “Thanks” She replied and strapped Luca in, before getting in her car and driving away, not sparing a look in her rear-view mirror.
“I can’t believe she took him” Bella said looking at Edward “I can. She’s human and she seemed pretty angry with us” Rosalie replied from inside the house “Not to mention none of us were going to look after him, I mean if we upset him or something happens to him, they’d have our heads” Emmett added “Well, that’s her problem now” Edward stated “Edward! That’s my sister” “I’m sorry Bella, but Luca is better off with your sister than being left here alone until Esme and Carlisle return” Edward replied.
Elena parked on the drive and took Luca’s crib and suitcase in the house and then returned to the car “We need to get some stuff for you. What do you like to eat?” She asked “I don’t know. Daddy and Auntie Heidi and Auntie Jane give me bottles of milk, something about it being good for children’s teeth and bones” He replied “Let me guess, they’ve read a baby book” She mused “Yep. Daddy has a few of them” Elena took a deep breath “You don’t need to drink blood, do you?” Luca shook his head “Daddy gave me a little bottle of blood last week just to see if I liked it. It was ok” He replied “Ok then. Well, I’m human and can’t give you blood so…I’m going to nurture your human side and feed you food that us humans eat. Sound good?” Luca nodded and smiled at her.
Elena parked the car and turned to look at Luca “Right, I need you not to talk whilst we’re in the shop” Luca looked confused “Ok, so human babies don’t speak until they’re about a year old. You look like a six-month-old baby, despite being less than a month old” “Oh, so I have to pretend to be a human baby who can’t talk?” “Yes please, just while we’re in the shop. Is that ok?” “That’s ok” He replied.
Elena put Luca in the seat on of the trolley and made her way around the shop picking up the items she required, being stopped every so often by someone complimenting Luca. “Aww, he’s adorable” One old lady commented, Luca just smiled at her. “Oh, he’s gorgeous and so well behaved, unlike some” Another lady said as she side eyed a toddler throwing a tantrum. Elena politely thanked them all and continued on their way.
“Are all humans that friendly?” Luca asked on the drive home “Most, you get a few that aren’t very nice, so it’s best to avoid those people” Elena replied and Luca nodded. Once they arrived back at Elena’s house, she carried him inside and unpacked the shopping, Luca watching her with curiosity in his blue eyes.
That night Elena cooked sausage, mash and peas, figuring she’d try something simple for Luca’s first-time eating food. “This is nice, thank you” Luca said with a smile “I’m glad you liked it sweetie” She replied “If you want you can have some milk before bed?” “Ok, thank you” He responded.
Elena set the travel crib up in her room and after bathing him she put him to bed, reading to him whilst he drunk a bottle of milk. “Goodnight Luca, sweet dreams” She said softly, “Goodnight Elena” He replied and drifted off to sleep.
Elena woke the next morning to find Luca sitting up in the crib “Morning Elena” “Morning Luca” She replied and got out of bed and lifted him out of the crib. Once downstairs, Elena gave Luca a bottle of milk and made herself a coffee as she made them both Vanilla and Honey flavoured porridge “Mmm, this is nice” Luca said smiling “It’s one of my favourite flavours” She replies. Elena introduced Luca to the world of Disney, both of them getting teary as they watched Bambi.
Esme and Carlisle returned home two days after Luca arrived to find Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper and Alice in the family room, but there was no sign of a heartbeat or anything belonging to a child “Where is Luca? Is he with Bella and Edward at the cottage?” Esme asked looking at them, they looked at each other before looking back at her “Luca isn’t with Bella and Edward” Rose answered “Where is he, I know he isn’t here?” She replied “He’s with Elena. She took home the day he arrived” Emmett answered and Carlisle sighed loudly, pinching the bridge of his nose “Why is he with her?” He asked “None of us wanted to look after him in your absence and well…Elena called us all out on behaviour and went upstairs grabbed Luca and his stuff and left. We haven’t seen them since” Alice replied this time “I did give her the car seat for him” Emmett adds “Oh, well, that’s alright then, as long as she has the car seat” Carlisle responded sarcastically “I’ll go call Elena and let her know we’re home” Esme left the room and heard her husband tell their children how disappointed he was with all of them.
Elena and Luca were at the park when Esme called to tell her she and Carlisle were home. “Luca, Esme and Carlisle are home and have asked that I take you over there” “Ok, when do we go?” He replied “Whenever we’re ready” He nodded “I’m ready to leave the park” He told her and helped her gather their things before going back to the car.
A few hours later they arrive at the Cullen house “Hello Elena” Esme smiled “Hello Esme” “This must be Luca, I’m Esme. It’s nice to meet you” She said softly “Hello Esme, it’s nice to meet you too” He replied. They followed Esme upstairs and saw Carlisle waiting for them “Hello Elena, Luca” “Hello Carlisle” Elena replied “Hello” Luca responded. Carlisle noticed how Luca stayed beside Elena even when Esme was talking to him, he wondered if Luca felt safer with Elena than with them given the attitude of his children.
“Well I should get going, things to do and all that” Elena said as she stood, Luca got up too and slipped his hand in hers “It was nice to meet you” Luca said smiling at Esme and Carlisle “Luca, now we’re home you’ll be staying with us as per the arrangement with your dad” Esme said softly, Luca shook his head “I want to stay with Elena” He replied “I can come visit you whilst you’re here” Elena said as she crouched down to his level, noticing his eyes had filled with tears. “I want to stay with you. I don’t want to stay here” He said and tears began to fall, Elena’s heart broke a little and she decided she wouldn’t leave him, not whilst he’s upset “How about I stay over tonight with you? If that’s ok with you Esme?” Elena asks, Luca turns to look at Esme waiting for her answer “Of course, that’s not a problem” She replied. Luca wrapped his arms around Elena “Thank you” His voice sounding muffled as he snuggled into her.
Luca liked Esme as she seemed nice but he preferred Elena looking after him, this included bath and bedtime. “I think it’s bath time” Esme said looking at Luca “Ok, come on Elena” He replied and got up from the floor where he was sitting and looked Elena “I think Esme planned on bathing you tonight” Elena told him and he shook his head “Can you bath me please?” He asked, Elena looked at Esme who nodded at her “You know where everything is” She said with a smile “Come on then Luca” Elena took his hand and they went upstairs to the bathroom. “Don’t take it personally love” Carlisle said low in his wife’s ear “He’s just gotten used to Elena caring for him. Give him time to get to know you” He kissed her temple “I know, I just thought he’d be ok with us looking after him now we’re home, that’s all” She replied.
Once Luca had been bathed Elena gave him a bottle of milk and read him a bedtime story “I like the stories you tell me” Luca said, his voice sounding sleepy “I’m glad. These are some of favourite stories too” She replied low. Elena showered and changed into the pyjamas Esme lent her.
Luca had been in Forks for about a week when he started walking, Elena felt bad that his dad was missing his son’s first steps so decided to take videos of his attempts and she was so happy she managed to capture his actual first steps on video too.
The following day Elena took Luca into town with her and visited her favourite bookstore, taking him straight over to the children’s section. His eyes went wide when he noticed the number of books in the store “Wow, and I thought daddy had lots of books” Elena chuckled but found his reaction cute. She bought him a copy of the fairy tale book she’s been reading him of a night-time. “Thank you Elena” He said with a smile “You’re very welcome sweetie” She replied with a smile of her own.
That night Elena took Luca back to the Cullens stopping to pick up some of her stuff. Elena sat in the bathroom with Esme and Luca as she gave him a bath. Luca had agreed to let Esme bath him as long Elena was there ‘it’s a start’ Esme thought to herself. Esme also read him a bedtime story before tucking him in and wishing him goodnight.
Elena took Luca to the Transport museum as she figured he’d probably like the different cars and trains. He found it amazing “I’ve never seen a train before” Luca told her “You know they have a small train outside that leaves the ‘station’ every hour and goes around the grounds. Would you like to go on the train?” She replied “Yes please” He answered, both curious and excited by the idea. They saw the different cars, buses and trains on display, Elena read out the information about each one. “I think I like the trains the best” Luca told Elena on the drive back to Elena’s house.
Over the next few days Elena and Luca baked cookies and brownies and made pizzas for dinner. They also coloured in the new colouring books she had bought for him following their trip to the Natural History museum, where Luca saw lots of dinosaur skeletons and found them fascinating.
Demetri had checked in occasionally with Carlisle via text and had a short phone call with him to advise he should be coming home the following day. Esme relayed the message to Elena, but asked her not to tell Luca in case something changed.
Elena took Luca to the Zoo and watched as Luca looked at all of the animals with awe and curiosity flashing through his eyes. Luca fed a baby giraffe some leaves through the fence “That was fun. I’ll have to ask daddy to bring me back here” He said bouncing up and down “Glad you’re having fun sweetie” She replied as they headed to the Elephant enclosure and Elena noticed a sign ‘Elephant’s bath time – 5 minutes’ “Would you like to watch the elephants have a bath?” “Yes, please Elena” He replied. Luca found it funny when the baby elephant went and rolled in a muddy puddle just after having his bath “Silly little elephant” He said pointing to the animal and Elena chuckled “Maybe someone should have told him how bath time works” She replied and he nodded.
Demetri had been away for nearly three weeks and arrived at the Cullen house to find Marcus waiting for him, but not his son. “Hello master” He greeted Marcus with a bow of his head before turning to look at Carlisle “Where’s my son? I know he’s not here” “He’s safe. He’s with Elena, they’re on their way over now” Carlisle replied “Who’s Elena?” “She’s Bella’s younger sister and…she’s been taking care of Luca whilst you’ve been away” “WHAT?...WHY?” Demetri demanded “It would seem that whilst Carlisle and Esme were away their children and Bella refused to look after Luca and Elena gave them quite a talking too and then decided she would care for your son until they returned. However, Luca has become quite attached to the human girl and didn’t want to stay here without her. So, Elena has continued to care for him, splitting her time between her home and the Cullen’s” Marcus answered calmly. “I have helped Elena out a little since I’ve been back but she has taken great care of him and they have become almost inseparable” Esme added smiling. “Another human knows about us? That means she has to be dealt with and as I’m the only guard here, that job falls to me…” He trailed off, Esme and Carlisle paled and looked to Marcus “It’s our law…your children shouldn’t have told her about us unless one of them planned on changing her” Marcus answered their unasked question. “What a great way to say thank you to the girl who has cared for my son” Demetri mumbled, although they heard him. This was one order he was hoping Marcus wouldn’t give, but he knew if the situation wasn’t dealt with now Caius would send Felix and possibly want to start a fight with the Cullens. The four vampires were so busy talking about the less than ideal situation they didn’t notice Elena and Luca enter the house; they heard everything, Elena knew her time was up…today.
Elena took a deep breath and entered the room “Hello Esme, Carlisle, sorry we’re a bit late I took him out for breakfast” Elena said with a smile “We had waffles with berries and syrup” Luca added, sounding excited. “Hello Luca and you must be Elena. It’s nice to meet you” Marcus said with a small smile “Hello Marcus” Luca replied “It’s nice to meet you too” Elena added.
Luca noticed his dad on the opposite side of the room and ran to him “Daddy, daddy” Demetri scooped him up into his arms holding him close, breathing in his scent. “I’ve missed you daddy” “I’ve missed you too, more than you know” Demetri replied. “You’ve grown so much and you’re walking, when I left you could only crawl” Demetri said as he looked his son over “I-I took videos of him attempting to walk and of his first steps for you. I know it’s not the same as seeing it in person but I thought you’d like to see it all the same. If you give me your number, I can forward them to you. If you have an email address, I can send you the many photos I’ve taken from our days out” Elena said softly, with a smile. “Thank you. I’ll write them down for you” He replied not looking at her. Demetri was angry, no seething, his son had thrived under the care of the human girl, the girl who had no reason to step up and take care of his son and he had to kill her…just to keep their secret. He refused to think about her name as it would only make his ‘task’ harder.
“We went to the Zoo yesterday and there were so many animals daddy. We watched the elephants get a bath and I got to feed a baby giraffe some leaves through the fence” Luca eyes were full of excitement “Elena even bought me a stuffed dolphin.” “Sounds like you’ve had fun” Marcus mused “Yep. We’ve been to the park, the Transport Museum, I really liked the trains. We went shopping and she bought me a book of fairy tales. Elena and I also had a hot chocolate and a gingerbread man once we finished shopping. It was yummy. Oh, and we saw dinosaurs too” Demetri and Marcus looked confused, Elena chuckled before replying “I took him to the Natural History Museum, there are dinosaurs on display.” Demetri nodded, still not looking at Elena, she knew why and didn’t mind. She was just a little upset that he had to be the one to kill her considering she had cared for his son for the past few weeks. She decided she’d tell him that she understood that it was his job to protect their secret and would give him her forgiveness, hoping that would help him live with his actions.
Luca’s voice bought her out of her thoughts “Oh, and we baked cookies and brownies. We even made pizzas for dinner. We had a few duvet days…” Demetri looked confused again and Luca laughed “It means we stayed in our pyjamas and watched movies all day. We ate popcorn and ice-cream too” Luca added smiling. “I hope you don’t mind but I kinda nurtured his human side, seeing as I’m human so he’s tried many human foods and seemed to like most of them” Elena explained “That’s very good of you, thank you” Demetri replied “Well, I figured you have an eternity to nurture his vampire side so…” She replied trailing off and he nodded. Elena noticed the look Marcus gave Carlisle and Esme and took a breath “I’m going to get his stuff from the car” Elena made her way outside “I’m going to help her” Luca added and followed Elena outside.
Luca sat on the steps leading up to the house, Elena sat beside him “Thank you for looking after me” “You’re very welcome sweetie” She replied and wrapped an arm around him. He got up and climbed into her lap and wrapped his arms around her, his head resting on her shoulder. Elena wrapped her arms around him and held him close, resting her head gently on his, both of them feeling tears build up in their eyes.
“I’m sorry Elena” He said softly and she knew what he meant for he had heard their conversation too. “You have nothing to apologise for…” “If you hadn’t looked after me, they wouldn’t know about you” Luca cut her off, a tear slipping down his cheek “I don’t regret looking after you Luca and they would have found out eventually” She replied softly and held him a little tighter.
The four vampires inside the house could hear their conversation and Demetri had never hated their laws or his job until today. He didn’t have a problem with humans, probably because he spent so much time in their world tracking vampires and he has no problems killing them to survive but this human did not deserve to die. He knew Luca wouldn’t fully understand the situation and was likely to hate him for killing his friend. ‘Gods I hope Marcus doesn’t give the order’ he thought to himself.
Meanwhile, Elena and Luca were still outside saying goodbye “I want you to promise me something Luca” She felt him nod against her “Do not blame daddy, he is just following orders. He has to keep your world a secret from mine.” Luca didn’t say anything. Demetri couldn’t believe how kind she was being despite knowing what was to happen to her. “Promise me Luca” He nodded and held out his little finger and she wrapped hers around it gently “Pinky promise” Luca said. This was something she had taught him when she promised not to leave him at the Cullen house.
A few moments of silence passed before Luca broke it “I’m sorry you don’t get to get married and have a family, like Esme” She felt tears slip down her cheeks too “I may not get to be a mummy but that’s ok. I at least got to see what it was like to be a mummy by looking after you” She stroked his hair gently “I wish you were my mummy” He said tears falling down his cheeks “Me too sweetie, me too” She replied “I love you” Luca snuggled into her further “I love you too” She replied holding him closer.
Demetri’s undead heart broke upon hearing their declarations, standing up he looked at Marcus “I can’t kill her. I won’t kill her. I’ll take her home and turn her. We’ll raise Luca together” He didn’t wait for a response and made his way outside to comfort Elena and his son, hoping Marcus would understand and not object to his decision.
“Elena” Demetri said softly as he stood in the doorway ‘this is it’ she thought and pulled back from Luca “I need you to go inside and stay with Esme and remember what I said ok?” She said softly, wiping his tears away with her thumbs “Ok” He replied low and wiped the tears from her eyes too. Before Luca could get up from Elena’s lap, they both felt strong arms wrap around them “Please don’t cry, I can’t bear it” “But…” “I’ve told Marcus I won’t harm you, in fact I’m taking you home with me” Demetri said cutting her off “Why?” She asked low “I will not repay your kindness that way and I couldn’t live with myself knowing I killed someone as sweet as you. You looked after my son when you had no reason to. You have come to care for one another…I heard your conversation, his wish, your reply. He already lost one mother before he got a chance to know her, I will not let him lose another” Demetri vowed and tightened his hold on them “But what about when you meet your mate?” Elena asked but before Demetri could answer Marcus spoke up “He already has my dear” Demetri, Elena and Luca looked up at him, confused looks on their faces “Demetri was so angry when he discovered that the Cullen children refused to look after Luca in Esme’s absence, that they had let you do so; knowing what that meant for you, that he refused to look at you. He didn’t want to look at the kind and caring human that had taken care of his son, knowing what he had to do, if ordered” He paused for a moment to see if they understood, and then continued “If Demetri had looked at you…just once, he would have known that you are his mate, his one true love” Elena and Demetri wore matching shocked expressions as their gazes switched between each other and Marcus, Demetri’s hold on Elena tightened slightly. “How-how do you know, if-if he didn’t?” Elena asked “It’s my gift. I can see relationships between people, how they are tied or bonded to each other. For example, I can see that a strong mother and son bond has developed between you and Luca in the few short weeks you’ve known one another. There is the beginnings of a strong mate bond between Demetri and you, it just needs to be nurtured, in order for you to live happily ever after, as they say” Marcus replied smiling.
“Does that mean Elena is coming home with us daddy?” Luca asked sounding hopeful “It does…as long as she agrees” Demetri replied looking at Elena and his son “Y-you really want me?” She asked Demetri “Yes, darling I do…I planned to take you home remember, to turn you and raise our son together and that was before I knew you were mine. Marcus has just confirmed that you are my mate…which means you will be with us for eternity” He looked into her eyes trying to read her “I want you to come home with us too…please” Luca added, she looked down at him still in her arms and smiled. “O-ok I guess we can try out this eternity thing” She replied looking at Demetri, giving him a small smile “I promise to look after you both and I will do everything I can to make you happy” He replied, Luca smiled knowing his new mummy was coming home with them…Forever.
Why are you so certain that Volturi will lose the inevitable confrontation? Because I think they could easily nullify Cullens' two trump cards and win. Alice's gift will become useless when Volturi acquire Joham's daughters. Bella's shield won't work against Benjamin's bending (who could be Chelsea-ed in Egypt outside of Bella's range and without Alice's forewarning). In these circumstances, I think, Cullens could be swiftly defeated (provided ofc Siobhan doesn't miracle them to safety again).
Keep in mind that most of this is me bracing for the impact of Renesmee the Novel. Meyer’s a maverick, there’s no predicting her, but this one I’m fairly certain of: there will be a confrontation with the Volturi and the Volturi will lose. It is written. Or will be.
But otherwise, while, yes there are timelines where the Volturi can and do win, Bella is a serious threat to them.
Keep in mind that Alec and Jane are what, above all other things, have kept the Volturi in power for a thousand of years. Yes, they went to war and won before them, but Alec and Jane is what saw them repelling the invasion of Italy by the Romanians with ease. Alec and Jane’s gifts are vital to the organization.
Chelsea’s gift, even if I believe it is not omnipotent, is vital to the organization.
We know Bella neuters all of these and can do so for a large amount of people all at the same time. And more, Aro’s enemies know this. There will be an arms race that the Romanians especially are desperate to win.
And true, while Benjamin could be recruited to the Volturi, I don’t think his gift alone will necessarily make the difference. Yes, he can terraform things and light things on fire, but I don’t believe vampires are flammable (venom is, vampires can’t be or Carlisle would have successfully killed himself long ago). Benjamin’s is a very flashy gift, great at parties, but he’s not Alec and Jane. He’s not a one man army. He will make things difficult for Bella’s army but not impossible.
The point being, with Bella, it becomes a battle based on numbers and physical strength rather than gifts. This gives those who side with Bella (or, rather, those who use her) a fighting chance. More, they don’t have to win the fight, necessarily, they just have to eliminate key players on the other side.
Alec and Jane would be a heavy loss for the Volturi. Chelsea and Renata even more so. Aro also, would be a very huge victory.
So, is it inevitable? No. Caius could convince Aro to strike fast and strike soon, assassinating Bella Swan. They could recruit an army of strength very swiftly or else start picking off Carlisle’s friends who he might build an army from. They could prepare for this, but, on the other hand, Bella gives those who oppose the Volturi the first real chance they’ve had in a thousand years.
And that chance is not necessarily small.
