You were helping Ian press buttons on the panel, hoping that the correct combination of numbers would do the trick in order for Ellie, Alan, and Maisie to reach safety. Luckily, all of that button mashing seemed to work out just fine.

Afterwards, you and the group got in a car together only to realize there were oversized locusts falling from the sky, on fire. You sat in the passenger seat of the vehicle across from Ian who was sitting in the drivers seat. Ellie and Alan sat in the back with Maisie in the middle.

Ian looked quite panicked at the situation happening quite before his eyes, "That's Bananas."

You yelped as the falling locusts caused the vehicle to crash as it teetered you took a few deep breaths while Maisie seemed like the only one with anything helpful to say. The car flipped upside down as she started to cry.

Your vision was a bit blurry as you glanced over at Malcolm, reaching your hand out toward his as the two of you linked your hands together.

A gentle chuckle escaped your lips when looking over at Ian's confused expression as he stepped out of the wrecked vehicle along with the others. He seemed surprised to see his old pals along with some new faces.

Loud stomping from a dinosaur was heard from afar as Alan and Owen both said, "Don't move." You accidentally stepped on a branch while hiding behind Ian, scared that the dinosaur would somehow see you before the rest of the group. The dinosaur looked like a T-Rex but it's frame was much larger. Alan explained to the group that the species is called an Gigantosaurus.

A gasp nearly escaped from your lips as your mouth opened wide but before you could make any noise, Ian pressed his lips against yours while both of your hearts beated rapidly against each other. Your chest pressed up against his, the moment becoming more heated by the second but unfortunately more pressing matters were at play.

"Go to safety." He told you before you ran off with the rest of the group and up the ladder. Ian stayed behind and hid in the flipped over car, the foot of the Gigantosaurus mere inches away from crushing him.

A thud was heard as the Gigantosaurus gnawed through the metal ladder like it was nothing, Kayla encouraged Maisie to keep climbing as the others soon followed.

The Gigantosaurus roared in all of there faces, including yours. Fear took over your body, unable to move as you stood still and watched Ian risk his life for a second time in a row. You didn't want to see the love of your life die.

He threw the fire locust on a stick into the dinosaurs mouth and it seemed to get the job done. Ian slipped while going up the ladder and luckily Alan was still there to save him because you were in pure shock, still inert until he finally made it up the ladder safely.

After a bunch of stunning blows to the dinosaur from the group, it finally left you and the others alone.

You took this opportunity to catch a few breaths.

The group chatted for a bit as Ian stood beside Kayla on one side of a white table and you on the other, he began to unbutton his shirt while Kayla shook her head no at Ian. Your cheeks grew warm at the sight of Malcolm, you wanted to tear the shirt off of Ian right then and there but it wasn't exactly the best time or place.

"Y/N, you feeling alright?" That all too familiar voice asked you in a cocky tone. You were staring at him unknowingly and gnawing at your lower lip so hard that it left an indent on the bottom. Ian had already buttoned his shirt up which was disappointing to say the least.

"Yeah, I'm feeling alright... thanks for calming me down out there." You winked gently over at him although your heart was still beating fast.

You and Ian Malcolm had met a few years back and wanted to work together on taking Biosyn down. Being younger than him has never phased the two of you.

Kayla walked over toward Ian as you walked toward Owen, making small talk. Ian stared at you and admired all of your features, getting lost in your beauty. Kayla grinned just a bit, "Wish I had a woman that looked at me like that, true love right there."

Tears began to run down your face as the emotions from recent events finally hit you. Ian had been through so many near death experiences and most of them were just stories to you, experiencing them first hand brought a whole new feeling and not a good one at that.

Owen frowned, you had helped him train the raptors in the past and he didn't want to see one of his friends in pain. He pulled you into a side hug, "I'm always gonna be here for you, Y/N. I promise. Take care now and if that Rambo dude ever treats you wrong... let's just see how much he likes a raptor bite to the ass."

Shaking your head, you chuckled at Owen's comment. He always knew how to put a smile on your face even on the darkest of days. "Thanks for helping me feel better, I'll catch up with you all in a few." He nodded and waited for Kayla to finish her conversation with Ian.

As soon as Ian noticed the tear stains on your cheeks, he rushed over and pulled you in for a huge bear hug.

You hid your face in the crook of Ian's neck while he rubbed your back gently with one of his hands to hopefully help you keep calm. After a few more deep breaths and being held in his arms, your heart started to beat at a normal rate and the only butterflies in your stomach were caused by your love and admiration for Ian.

You worried about Ian, wondering if he was going to die tonight but luckily he was still safe and sound in your arms. "I was worried about you..." You uttered to Ian softly while looking up at his hazel eyes.

"Don't worry about me my love, I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me no matter how many gray hairs I grow."

You rolled your eyes at him jokingly with a chuckle, "I love you no matter what, silly."

"I love you too, Y/N."

Domestic Bliss (Ian Malcolm x Reader)

An: You have no idea how happy I am to have gotten this request! I’m literally in love with this fucker. Also, this fic takes place right before Jurassic World Dominion. So, if you haven’t seen that don’t read this.

Summary: You have to admit, moving to the research center hadn’t been the worst idea

Warnings: SPOILERS FOR JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION!!

If you were honest, you didn’t think anything would take you near a Dinosaur voluntarily again. Your biggest regret was helping create the damn things years ago, and they had almost killed you multiple times. When Jurassic World opened you had openly criticized it, and when the debate on if they should be protected came up you were strongly for letting them die.

And yet, you round yourself living at another research facility for the beasts. This time you had simply brought your two children, David who was 4 and Ell who was a year.

When Ian first brought up the idea of going you had shut it down immediately. You didn’t care how advance the security system was, you had thought you were safe once too and you didn’t want your kids in danger. But over time he wore you down, just like he always did when he wanted something. Eventually you agreed to go, so your family packed up and made the move.

You didn’t want to admit it, but the moment you saw a dinosaur again you felt like you were seeing them for the first time all over again.

As soon as you landed the owner of InGen greeted you, and showed you where you would be living for the foreseeable future.

“ stegosaurus”

“Very good. And what do they eat?”

“Plants.” You watched from the couch as Ian held up one of the toy dinosaurs up to David.

“And this one?” He held up another, continuing to quiz the young child. Ell, who was learning to walk and using him as a stabilizer, leaned forward, trying to grab one of the toys.

“You want one too?” Ian lifted her to sit in his lap, and once she could reach she quickly grabbed the t-Rex and brought it to his mouth.

“Ell, you can’t eat the y-Rex! He’s the big one!” David exclaimed.

“I wouldn’t say the big one.” You cut in, sliding down to sit next to your husband. “Technically the ‘big one’ would be the brontosaurus. The t-Rex is just the meanest.” You explained.

“But Ell still can’t eat him!” He whined. Ell, as though knowing her brother was making fun of her, stoped chewing on the toy and threw it to the ground. “Here Ell, you be the Stegosaurus and I’ll be the triceratops. Then we can fight.”

“I’ve taught you nothing!” You threw your arms up as you’d stood, making Ian laugh at you. ”oh shush.” You lightly kicked him as you walked over to the small kitchen.

“Hey!” He set Ell on the ground and stood up, walking over to where you were.

“Tea?” You asked, turning to make some once he nodded. “When is your next lecture?”

“I don’t have any for the rest of today or tomorrow.” He told you, letting his hand run through his hair. As much as you missed the brown curls you had loved so much, you definitely liked the slicked back gray look.

“You know, I wonder what people would say if they saw the sarcastic asshole known as Dr. Malcolm playing dinosaurs on the floor with a 4 year old.” You chuckled, handing him is cup of tea before sitting next to him at the kitchen bar.

“I think we could give Grant a good heart attack.” You smiled at his joke, but looked down at the liquid in your cup.

“Hey, thank you.” You turned to give him a questioning look. “You didn’t want to come here, yet you did. I know you never wanted to see one again, so thank you.” He admitted. You always treasured these moments with Ian. Even though you had been married for years he wasn’t the type to be serious.

“I have to admit it hasn’t been all that bad. I think we’ve spent more time all together since coming here, and the kids love it so much.” You explained. “But you owe me.” You pointed at him. He he leaned forward, pulling you into a kiss. It wasn’t super long, but it had the promise of something more behind it.

“Baby, I think I have just the idea on how to pay you back.” He winked at you, but before he could kiss you again the door to your apartment opened.

“Dr. Malcolm?” You both turned to see a man standing in your door way.

“A bit busy Ramsay.” He tried dismissing the boy, but he didn’t leave.

“I really need to talk to you.”

“And I’m about to have sex with my wife. Your point.” You lightly slapped Ian, slightly embarrassed by his words.

“It’s about the lotus.” Ian final pulled away and looked over at him.

“Fine,” he stood and gave you another quick kiss. “Be back to finish in a bit.”

Announcement! I have Fanfics ready to be released in 10 days' time!

As of now, in my timezone, it is the 5th August in 2023, and I have reached a decision. I have finished the first chapter of my @the-untitledverse-blog fic Jurassic World: Before The Storm, and am creating a oneshot collection fic (requests will not be open until I say otherwise) as well as on my @the-silver-chronicles blog, in addition to a separate small fic both involving my deputy OC Silva Omar.

In the coming ten days, I will be posting information about my Jurassic World fic and some additional stuff from my two other blogs. This includes characters, story, plot, themes and more. If you have any questions about OCs or the story, I will be releasing character profiles and posting some Ask Games that I saved.

On August 15th in 2023, I will publish my Jurassic World: Before The Storm on Archive of Our Own, Wattpad, and Tumblr itself. I am looking to create an account on fanfiction.net as well as some others, but that won't come until later. The FC5 oneshots will also be published on these sites in a few days after the release of Jurassic World: Before The Storm. As of now, I will not be releasing any fics in my @life-despair-and-monsters-blog as they are currently underdeveloped and incomplete, but there will be content and information being released on this little pocket universe I've made and even chances to ask about it.

I am very excited to share my first official fic. I am even more excited to share the universes I have had stuck in my head for who knows how long.

Everyone's replies, reblogs, likes and support over the past few weeks have encouraged me to share and reach out of my comfort zone to other mutuals. The community I've discovered here are so supportive and respectful of each other and the fantastic and fascinating works and art I've read and seen makes me so happy to have found such amazing people.

I am unable to express in words alone how much your words have meant to me. All I can say is thank you so much.

Any who, I've drained my brain's capability to speak more. Might make another post later, probably tomorrow though. Cheers!

"We'll be alright"

Pt.1

Summary: you've been married to Owen Grady as well as training a pack of velocaraptors at the New Jurassic World for two years now. So what happens when the two of you are asked to check on the paddock for a new dinosaur only for things to go sideways and send the entire park into chaos?

Catigory: fluff/angst

A/n: So I ended up changing the plot of this oneshot completly from the original bc writers block just wouldant let me finish the old plot. But I hope you injoy!!

"Blue!Echo! Eyes up over here!"

"Delta!Charley! Eyes up!"

I could feel the sun baking my skin through my seemingly usless t-shirt in the suns harsh heat.

"Charley pay attention I see you!" I comanded the raptor who had begun to look over at her sisters and Owen.

"Alright hold it like that! " Owen called out from my right before reaching into one of the buckets attached to the rail that held the girls snacks. I began reaching into my own bucket when Owen called out again,"Echo!" He said tossing the rat down to Echo who jumped and snatched the treat from the air. " Delta! Youre turn." I say tossing Delta her rat before doing the same for Charley. Lastly owen threw Blue her's and the exersise was over. "And. Go!" My husband and I called out at the same time pulling our arms down to our sides dissmisng the raptors below.

Owen sauntered over to me and wraped his arms around my middle as a smile began to grow over my featurs.

"Well hello there mister Grady. How may I help you?" I joked, raising an eyebrow.

Owen returned my smile before placing a soft kiss on the crown of my head taking my hand and leading me down the steps.

"You can help me by accompining me at dinner tonight. Which will be fallowed by a wonderfull night with eachother." He stated while gently rubbing his thumb over my knuckels.

"Thats sounds nice. Tho I would much rather skip to the 'wonderfull night with eachother' part." I said stoping and placing my arms loosly around Owen's neck with a smirk which he returned with one of his own.

"That is surrtently doable." He said moveing his large hands to rest on my hips and leaned in closer to my face before placing his lips on mine.

"Well. That sertenly was impresive. Tho I still think they need a feild test." A male voice began.

Owen and I pulled away from eachother sighing as we saw the owner of the voice. 'Out of all the times this prick could show up its now.' I thought to myself while crossing my arms over my chest.

"We've already told you. You can not take these animles out of there incloser. There pack hunters. You show them an outside world there never going back in there." Owen explained for what seemed like the onehundreth time this month.

"So you say but we will never know untill you try." Hoskins began again.

"There not wepons Hoskins," I began" There animals with there own free will. So when it comes down to a feild test the only thing that would keep you from becoming there next meal is the bond and trust Owen and myself have built with them. But I'm starting to think not even that will save you." I remarked walking closer to the man to the point where I was mearly a foot away.

Hoskin's began to form a reply mouth barly open before anotothers cut him off.

"Pig loose!" One of our new interns squilled while runing along the cat walk. "Pig loose!" He repeated as others began to go and help him wrangel the pig. "Hey kid! Do do that!" I shouted up knowing exactly what would happen. And it did. The moment the poles strap was around the pigs neck Delta took hold of it and pulled the intern into the pin. "Shit" Owen and I say simultanisly before running to the gate that would let us in the paddock before anyone could stop us.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Our friend and coworker Barry called out now at the gate as well but not going in.

"Just be ready to close the gate!" Owen called out as we now stood between the intern and our girls.

Now I'm not gonna lie. Im scared as shit.

"Kid I want you to run out of here. Now" Owen orderd useing his oh so famous 'Alpha voice.' The kid breifly nodded before making a b -line out of the padock all while Owen and I kept the raptors attention on us.

"Charlie back up! Don't think I can't see you!" I call out to the now retreating raptor.

"How are we going to handle this Owen?" I asked my line of sight never disconecting from the dinosours infront of us. But insted of anwsering me directly he called out to Barry at the gate.

"Close the gate now Barry!" He ordered and only then did I take the risk of quickly shifting my eyes to look at my husband.

"Are you crazy man! Im not going to close the gate!" Barry retorted and I had to agree,

"I agree with Barry on this one Owen. I know that we have built alot of trust with the girls but I do not think that it's enogh to keep them from eating us." I vocilized my conserns taking a slight step back from Delta and Charlie.

"Just close the gate Barry. And ------- get ready to run." He replyed to Barry and I. I could here Barry cuss Owen before the sound of the gate begining to close behind us could be heard.

"Get ready to run." I heard Owen mutter before he started counting down on his fingers.

As soon as his pointer finger droped the two of us broke out in an all out sprint twords the now almost closed gate. Once we finaly reached the gate I dove under first closley fallowed by Owen and the second Owen was clear the gate closed with Blue stoping right agenst the bars.

The pair of us got up and dusted our selves off before Owen began on the Intern.

"You're the new Intern right?" He began walking up to the poor kid who just silently nodded," well you ever wonder why there was a job losting? Never turn youre back on the cage." He said and with that Owen turned away from the kid and began walking away and I fallowed.

"Theres youre field test." I said gruffly as we walked by Hoskins .

An Pt:2. Look! I finnly posted what I decided to be the first part of a series. Dont know how many parts yet tho. But I hope anyone who reads this injoyed !

WIP Updates

Been a while since I did one of these, and I should honestly be trying to sleep so this damn sore throat/respiratory crap goes away, but I just can't breathe when I lay down >_< however, I'm feeling a bit better than a couple days ago so I'll do this update and see if I can concentrate long enough to get some words in on at least one of these projects.

Project Zander:

I finished chapter five last night and sent it off to the beta readers. That one took a while to really come together to my satisfaction, especially the past scene. I had over 10k words on this chapter at one point before figuring out what it needed and cutting it down to 6500.

I am now working on outlining the next five chapters before I dive into chapter six.

Untitled Original Project:

I decided to scavenge some parts from Teenage Vigilante Witch and build an original story out of it. So far I like what I've got, which is about 4k words and needs a lot of outlining. Still keeping the found family aspect, but I'm doing a lot of world building and outlining to ensure it's a very different story from Teenage Viginate Witch. Looking back on it now, there was a lot of stuff I wish I'd explored in that first story, but it was written very fast and thrown up on archive to prove to myself that I could still write. I never intend to go back and edit or rewrite any of it, so I'm going to take the potential it had and put it into another story and take it a couple jogs to the left. Mostly, I'm going to be exploring that guilty/vigilante mindset with a spell amnesia twist that slowly pulls back to reveal a truth better left forgotten with a different take on found family. Still working out a lot of the details but I'm excited for it.

Home Across the Universe #10:

It's a little over 3k at the moment but I have notes and scenes in my email that I need to get and stitch together in the draft, so it's likely closer to 5k. Also, I already have the ending outlined and I'm excited to get to that since it's a cliffhanger I'm gonna get yelled at over. Looking forward to that. I may poke at this one today and see if I can get some more written on it.

Also a little over 3k written, I'm still outlining the scenes to make sure I include everything I need to so it's a satisfying ending. I'm shooting for this to be the end of the series and there are a lot of threads to tie off.

Into the Black, Episode 3:

Also sitting at 3k, this has a couple of chunk sitting in my email I need to stitch in as well. I haven't worked on it in a couple weeks and need to sit down and outline my scenes to figure out where it needs to go. I have a vague idea but not enough to work on, especially today with my mind being fried from sickness.

Untitled Sequel to the supposed Jurassic World/Teen Wolf Oneshot:

I told myself it was a one shot and I believed it for a while, but a plot bunny bit me after a recent rewatch of Fallen Kingdom and I now have...5,515 words of a sequel. It goes a bit AU from Fallen Kingdom because I had high hopes for the promises that movie set up for Dominion that Dominion just did not deliver for me. I'm still let down about that, apparently. I'm aiming to keep the story small in scale, but it was fun pitting Stiles against dinosaurs the first time and this sequel has him showcasing some more of his smarts while injured and a little delirious from pain meds, so it should be entertaining.

Aaand, that's all I've been working on lately. Hoping to get the next Home Across the Universe oneshot finished and posted first, though I'm not making any promises or predictions on when that will be. Hopefully I can scrape together enough brain cells to work on it today and get it closer to the end scene.

Request Challenge (Ao3)

I am moving my Ao3 Request Series to Tumblr and Patreon (early access and first picks). If you are not familiar with the request challenges I do on Ao3, under the name TheOriginalSinner888, it is simple. I post the challenge, how many requests I am accepting, and you comment your request (including your Ao3 account name if you want a shoutout) by the deadline date posted and I pick randomly which ones I fulfill. As long as they fall within the rules and regulations, they have a chance of getting picked.

Since this is a new platform for receiving the requests, things are going to work just a little differently. I will be posting the challenge to tumblr and patreon and publicizing them on my other social medias. But I will only be picking from the comments to my patreon and tumblr, not Instagram or TikTok.

I will also be accepting extra requests this time over a longer time period. I am still working on larger projects, but doing this helps keep my creative juices flowing when writer block hits me. And I also love doing this series for my readers.

I will be doing six requests to be chosen and fulfilled by February 2023. I will be randomly selecting these requests from comments on this challenge posted on my patreon and tumblr. The deadline will be December 10, 2023, since this is a new platform and I want everyone to have a chance to get their request in. I will then take the rest of December to choose and write and be posting the one-shots over January and early February.

Here are the rules to keep in mind;

Readers may request anything within fandoms I have already written for or from the pre-approved list I’ve added to the series notes.

I will be selecting six requests completely randomly from comments on the challenge post found on my patreon and tumblr, submitted by December 10, 2023.

I will not accept any request that includes overly gross concepts–in my opinion and wheelhouse, no shaming–including snuff, piss, feces, lyrics, diapers, 9/11 etc. I reserve the right to use my own discretion if I’m not comfortable with something put in front of me.

HARPER’S 2022 FIC WRAP-UP

WELL GANG, WHAT A YEAR IT HAS BEEN!

first off, i know i’ve fallen off A Lot on tumblr in the last year, so my deepest and most sincere apologies for that. 2022 was a chaotic, frustrating, and overall deeply transformative year (for both better and worse) for me, and with all the changes/struggles in my professional and personal life it’s been difficult to maintain a decent posting schedule along with like. continuing to talk to people and function as a human being lmfao.

alas, another year has come to an end, and though i considered not doing my annual wrap-up, it’s become something of a tradition for me at this point, so fuck it, we ball.

without further ado, let’s talk fanfic:

projects i updated/completed in 2022:

oceans between us (shiita; 38,737 words; complete)

it’s a testament to how heinously long and strange this year was that when i sat down to draft up this wrap-up i genuinely fucking forgot i finished this fic in 2022. wild!

like a lot of fics i write (or want to write, and then do not) this fic was born from an attachment to a particular image or idea that inspired inspiration and then i had to pull a whole plot out of my ass to justify its existence. this was very much the case with the first chapter of ‘oceans between us’ aka atonement au, where the spirit of doomed historical romances and period-typical repression and sexual tension possessed me like a ghost and caused me to cough up the first chapter of that fic in like two days. i also wanted to write something that was very different than the typical character interactions and tone that existed in my previous works, and even looking back on it now i still think it’s a really unique and interesting addition to the works i’ve published thus far.

like i’ve said before, originally this was going to be a oneshot that ended where the first chapter does, i.e. with shisui going to jail and the relationship between him and itachi purposefully left without resolution. but that idea reeeeally much did not go over well when i discussed it with other people (aka my wife), which left me with the very real problem of how to conclude this goddamn fic. and that’s where itachi came in.

hilariously, i feel like this fic ushered in an unofficial (and accidental) era of itachi pov takeover where nearly everythng i wrote last year (and definitely everything i published in 2022) was in itachi’s pov exclusively. that said, after the events at the end of the last chapter, it felt necessary to have itachi tell the final chapter because i knew i needed to have a good explanation for his lack of action at the conclusion of chapter one and i also needed to get people back on his side for the end of the fic to land successfully.

in terms of structure, the switching of tenses and time periods was both incredibly fun and incredibly annoying in terms of editing and consistently, but i do feel like it added an immediacy and level of fear to the fic that enhanced the reading. if you’ve read the original book, you know that the characters itachi and shisui are (loosely) based on (cecilia and robbie) both die and never have their happy ending in real life, only in fiction. so i wanted the reader to feel real concern that these two crazy kids might not make it after all.

overall, i ended up being really, really happy with how this fic turned out, and some of my favorite scenes i’ve ever written (namely, the reunion scene between shisui and itachi in the cafe) are in this story. more than anything, it was just nice to start the year by finishing something.

lazarus taxon (shiita; 38,256 words; in progress)

quite frankly, this fic was the bane of my existence in 2022 for a variety of reasons.

first off, this chapter was an absolute Nightmare to write. as many of you may remember, initially i had planned jurassic world au as a three-part fic, whereas now it is... not quite that anymore. having written and published the first two chapters within a pretty short timespan, when i sat down to seriously work on (what i thought was) the final chapter, it rapidly became clear that there was no way to successfully wrap this shit up in one more installment. and as i was writing, it was pretty obvious that i was rushing from plot point to plot point trying to get the fic finished rather than taking the time to make it a story i was proud of and would want to re-read. once i realized that, it became a guessing game of what i was missing, and once i thought about it, the answer was obvious: conflict.

(we will have this discussion again next year when i tell the tale of how, in january 2023, i ended up scrapping almost the entire (actual) last chapter of this fic because i had to learn this lesson all over again.)

narratively speaking, blue’s injury served a few important purposes. first off, it’s a chance to see shisui--who’s been something of a handsome and charming enigma--soften up and appear a lot less composed and in control than he’s previously been. that vulnerability was necessary if he and itachi were going to push their relationship to another level, and also necessary to motivate itachi to take a real, genuine stand against fugaku and all his fugaku-ery. (it was also, admittedly, a chance for me to continue to play in the sandbox i’ve created where i get to use a lot of my real world knowledge and skills--namely, animal behavior and veterinary medicine, the two things i do for a living.)

once i unlocked that piece of the puzzle, everything started to fall into place, and then i knew that i would need an entire chapter to devote to itachi and shisui as a couple--what their relationship would look like, how dating would change them, and if, given the differences between them, it was possible to even sustain a relationship in the first place. which is why i ended on the confession scene, so everything that came after would be something of a blank slate and the finale could just be the--pun intended--evolution of their bond.

all that said, by the time i was finished with this chapter i had spent so much time, effort, and energy trying to wrangle it into something readable i was kind of drained by it, and that fact along with the knowledge that it’s never been my most popular fic (and that the reception to this update was a little quiet) left me burnt out by fanfic for a bit. it also didn’t help that, as i’ve previously discussed, this was around the time my entire life was uprooted by losing my job so there were just. a lot of factors working against me that really zapped my inspiration. if only another project could have come along and truly inspired me...

pack up (don’t stray) (shiita; 63,923 words; completed)

hilariously, i had way more Profound and Meaningful shit to say about this fic, but tumblr ate a chunk of my post when i was trying to save it and i’m too annoyed at this stupid website to try and recreate all of my previous comments in depth.

what i will say is that, if there’s any fic that stands a chance of surpassing star trek au as the fic i’m most known for, i’m really, really happy it’s this one. i love this fic from beginning to end, i think it’s one of the strongest pieces i’ve published, and i’m honored that other people have become as invested in the sad, weird little world as i am. honestly, it’s been so touching to see how many people have connected with this story and how it’s gone from a piece i mentioned in my 2021 wrap-up as really loving but being kind of sad about the lack of traction to a fic that developed a really dedicated reader-base who provided some of the best comments and feedback i’ve ever gotten. and since the two updates were so different from one another (and the final chapter is so, so long) it only feels appropriate to give them each their own sections.

chapter two:

to be blunt, there’s a really good chance that the second chapter of band au is my favorite thing i’ve ever written, full stop. part of the reason i think i have such fondness for this chapter (besides the fact that that i accomplished all my goals for this section of the story with this chapter and i feel like the writing itself is pretty good) is the fact that i wrote almost all of it in the span of about six or eight hours like a madman. in doing so, it was really easy to stay focused, maintain a tight grip on the pacing and narrative, and let everything flow from there.

like i said in my 2021 wrap-up, part of the appeal of this story was to push itachi and shisui to the brink of likability and test how many crappy things they could do to one another while people still had empathy for them (the answer turned out to be: a lot!) i think part of why so many people have reached out to tell me that this fic affected them so much is because, in some ways, all the pain and misery is just so mundane. there’s no spaceships or magic ninjas or genetically-modified dinosaurs; it’s just two people breaking each other’s hearts, over and over again, the same terrible shit that happens every day and there’s something really relatable about that. (for more on this point, see my answer to this ask.)

(speaking of relatability--as someone who has struggled with substance abuse for the entirely of their adult life and is always working on their sobriety, the prospect of dipping into that well was incredibly daunting, and i’m happy that it felt authentic to people who were reading.)

i don’t want to gush over my own writing because that seems tacky, but man oh man. there’s just so many things about this chapter i love and i’m just so happy other people felt the same way. anyway, time for the finale!

chapter three:

in some ways, the final chapter of band au was one of the pieces i was most nervous to write. after spending two chapters taking a wrecking ball to the shiita relationship in this fic, the prospect of piecing it back together in a fashion that felt genuine and respectful of the trauma they both experienced seemed kind of impossible.

like most of my projects, i knew from the beginning what the end of this fic was going to be. i actually knew the ending to band au better than most of my other stories, because before i even finished chapter one i knew the last chapter would end with the airport scene and i knew the specific lines of dialogue that would conclude the fic itself. the problem was how to justify even the possibility of shisui and itachi considering getting back together after everything they did to one another in the last chapter.

the first step seemed to be presenting how much they’d grown (itachi is sober, shisui got married--and divorced!-- and had a kid, both of their careers had progressed in different directions, etc.) to show that perhaps they were evolving to a point where they could learn to be in each other’s lives again. i really enjoyed re-imagining this characters as, in theory, older and wiser and adding in newer characters and original details to flesh out the lives they had created when they were apart from one another. honestly, my heart is so soft for both millie and heather, and i’m genuinely so happy that my ocs--always a dicey prospect in fic--got such a warm reception. i also really loved getting to show the band as a functioning, familial unit and all the different relationships that existed amongst the four of them. and how can i not love mean little sasuke with his suburban chickens and burning hatred for shisui.

the second step, as it often seems to be for me, was making peace with the fact that this chapter was going to have to be approximately eight hundred thousand years long if i wanted to stick the landing. if i was going to trace itachi’s journey from suspicion and lingering mistrust, to warily allying himself with shisui, to realizing he actually enjoys being around shisui again, to realizing how much he still misses and loves shisui, to taking a risk and giving shisui a second chance despite literally every reason not to do so, i was going to have to take my time and earn that decision. even though writing this one chapter ate up the majority of my writing time this year, i’m really happy with the length of this chapter and the different locations and events it followed, because i feel like it gave the story a lived-in quality that was necessary given how over-the-top the second chapter was.

on the other end of making this reunion functional and believable, inevitably this chapter also had to be the shisui redemption tour. i’ve made it clear in the past that, as shitty as his behavior was post-break-up, i don’t think he’s entirely responsible for the nuclear end to he and itachi’s relationship. that said, i knew it was going to take a lot to get both itachi and the reader back on board with Shisui and Itachi: The Sequel, which is why we get to see so much more of him than we did in previous chapters: rather than itachi quickly summarizing events or the narrative presenting small bits of dialogue, we actually to spend a lot more time with shisui the flesh and blood person now that he’s not the idealized or villainized version that lives in itachi’s head. and it wasn’t until he was a fully realized person again that there was any hope of him and itachi making things work, which... let’s talk about that ending.

i knew from the very beginning that i didn’t want to end this fic with shisui and itachi officially getting back together. considering all the shit they’d gone through, it didn’t seem realistic to have them suddenly live happily ever after. this was always a messy story about messy people and i didn’t want to give it an easy ending. i always wanted to end this story on the idea of a new beginning, of a better future, rather than a tidy resolution to this relationship, because it seemed so much more authentic to their journey and, to me, more meaningful. and, though i’ve had people tell me they wish i’d written a better ending, it’s a decision i still stand by 1000000000000% as the right choice. that and i’m writing a sequel oneshot as we speak so it’s not even really the ending anyways

i really could talk forever about this au. of all the fics i have, published and unpublished, it really does stand out as one that’s special and so very close to my heart, and i’ve spent so much time thinking about these washed up losers that i think i could keep returning to this ‘verse again and again for as long as i continue to write fanfic.

so, that’s it! it’s kind of hilarious i had so much to say given that i fell far below my own expectations for 2022 in terms of writing, but what can you do.

in the spirit of being a little more productive (and certainly a lot more positive), let’s set some goals for 2023:

i’m finishing the last chapter of jurassic world au even if it kills me

I AM ALSO FINISHING THE NEXT STAR TREK AU CHAPTER EVEN IF IT KILLS ME

after, like, three years of hibernation i actually dusted off my pacrim au and yep, you guessed it--i want to finish that sucker, too

finally, since i’m hoping to take two (2) fics off my plate, i’d like to finally get serious about publishing the first chapter of the shiita enemies to lovers vampires and werewolves au i’ve had in the works, which i’m very excited to share with everyone
