Just My butch husband and his familiar being nosy neighbors
We’re working on the final edits and some promo material for my partners debut novel, The Heretic Prince!
If you want to read queer fantasy written by a queer author, please check out @thehereticprinceseries , my beautiful butch has written a captivating high fantasy following the interwoven fates of three queer main characters, with an incredible journey of transmasculine chivalry, a pining sapphic romance, and a gay coming of age against a backdrop of magic, espionage, and a budding conspiracy to undermine the false-prophets of an oppressive theocracy

Norris wasn’t sure if his Waiting Room Friend was gay or a hipster. (The possibility that he might be a gay hipster, or even a metrosexual had also crossed his mind.) His Waiting Room Friend was short and fat and hairy and always dressed Mod-meets-modern or Peacock Revolution with the Technicolor toned down. Today’s outfit featured a chartreuse turtleneck and several strings of multicolor glass beads. His jacket– brown corduroy, with pointy lapels–was draped over one shapely, skinny-jean-clad thigh. His hair was wavy, tousled and dark. As always, he was stunning, but his clothes gave Norris zero concrete hints as to his sexuality. ... Their introductions had consisted of, “Can I get a light, big guy?” Norris had glanced over, seen nothing, and then looked down. “Oh. Sure.”  Despite his Waiting Room Friend being a foot shorter than him, it felt to Norris like it was the other way around. His presence was magnetic. It compelled him. They didn't even spend a lot of time together– just talking and smoking, leaning against the concrete pillars a little bit down the plaza –but the way he considered anything Norris had to say, however quietly or sporadically he said it, had Norris thinking about him long after they’d parted.
Chapter Five of my ongoing novel project is here! It's a long one! We learn a little about Norris' teenhood, meet his crush, & he & Rufus attempt to start their search for Rufus' apprentice, but run into a magical complication.
If you haven't started reading yet, & 'early 2000s trans Goth accidentally gets involved in a gay wizard’s revenge quest against his former apprentice/lover’ sounds like fun, you can start reading here, for free! 🧙🌈

I've been rediscovering my love for Clive Barker this week due to finally managing to see The Ultimate Cabal Cut of Nightbreed (some kind soul has uploaded it to YouTube) and then re-reading Cabal, the book it was based on.
Cabal is amongst my favourite books ever written (though as a bibliophile that list is extremely long!) and one of my favourite movies. I originally saw it in the early 90s when I was probably far too young, and read the book not long after.
I backed the Occupy Midian campaign in 2012 when the lost footage was being searched for and reintegrated into the movie, and I attended a screening of one of the early edits where I met Nicholas Vince and Simon Bamford (Kinski and Ohnaka in Nightbreed, but better known as two of the Cenobites from Hellraiser). This led to the eventual DVD/Blu-ray release of The Directors Cut (which I got a physical copy of) and then The Ultimate Cabal Cut (which I didn’t, and which I haven't seen until now).
It's an oversimplification to call Barker's work horror, especially in Cabal/Nightbreed - this was the mistake the production company made when originally editing and marketing it.
Clive Barker's vision shows us the beauty of the weird, the macabre, the abnormal, and the supernatural, and the true horror in his work comes from the "normal".
In Cabal/Nightbreed his monsters are not evil, they're simply different - undead, mutants and supernatural beings, a metaphor for anyone who has ever felt othered by society. Midian is a place where they can live safely with no fear or judgement. The evil characters are "naturals", humans who hate and fear the monsters for being different even though they pose no threat, and ultimately try to destroy them.
As a member of the LGBT community it's easy to see where Barker's motivation for this metaphor came from, but it could equally apply to just about anyone who feels like they don't fit in. Certainly as a lonely, bullied, weird child when I first read/saw it, who then grew up into a reasonably weird adult, I'd love for the monsters to come and take me away to Midian.
Anyone seeing this who isn't familiar with the book/movie, I'd urge you to look them up, as well as others by Barker. More of my favourites by him are Imajica, Abarat and of course The Hellbound Heart, filmed as Hellraiser. The Forbidden from short story anthology The Books of Blood was also filmed as Candyman.
Below I've linked The Cabal Cut of Nightbreed. Even if you know and love the original theatrical release I'd still urge you to watch this (quick as you can in case its removed due to copyright!).
In addition to doubling the movie length from 1 hour 40 mins to 3 hours 20 mins, a number of the actors voices have been re-recorded as they were overdubbed in the theatrical version for some reason, notably those of Rachel, and Lylesberg, played by Doug Bradley. It was a crime to remove that man's beautiful voice and wonderful to hear it back where its meant to be.
Also, rather than being a standard horror movie heroine who seems to be there only to scream and be rescued, in this version Lori comes across as much stronger and more well-rounded character.
As it says in the opening text, although much of the footage was of good quality there are some sections where all they had available were degraded VHS tapes, some of which were without audio. This means the editing is also a little clunky in places. However the makers of this version wanted to include everything they possibly could in order to bring it in line with the original shooting script and Clive Barker's epic vision for the piece.

You aren't a monolith
I know my ADHD ass needed this reminder, so maybe one of you needed it too: just because all the professionals say that the only way to be taken seriously is to write every day, and to write actual words and not just notes. Just because they say you need to force yourself to finish a project in one go to get anything done doesn't mean that that is true. Just because they are published doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.
I have ADHD, which means I can't force myself to stay on one thing until it's finished. My brain works in cycles, usually, I write fantasy, sometimes I write sci-fi, rarer than that is celebrity drama and rarely it's horror. I can't force myself to write outside of my current mood because if I do, I'm not having fun and the text is dogshit, so I might as well have not written anything at all and I would have paradoxically been more productive!
I'm currently experimenting with a style where I have a WIP to represent each of my moods and I will work on each WIP when that mood comes. I shall report back once the results are in.
Forgotten
So, I have been quiet about my last WIP bc I have been struggling with it. I have been slogging along, writing daily for months, but last week I gave up because it was too painful. I then started a project with a friend where we randomized everything.
It's about a polycule, where the POV character is like an edgy Robin Hood who starts dating their childhood friends, Cruella Devil the tattoo artist, and a scarred war veteran who is a golden retriever in human form. The tone is light and "childish." (We randomized children's literature as one of the genres)
This reminded me that writing, it turns out, is supposed to be fun! Shocking, right?
This is the reason I'm not currently pursuing getting published even tho I wish to do so; I started treating writing as if it were my job even though it's just my hobby. (The avalanche of writing advice only applicable to neurotypical writers didn't help)

Cav Crawford has a lot going on. He’s a college student. He has a side gig as a PI. Oh yeah—and he sees ghosts.
When four teenage boys disappear while ghost hunting but only one reappears days later (covered in blood and with no memory of what happened), the police point the finger at the boy. The boy’s parents hire Cav to prove his innocence, and it doesn’t take him long to realize he’s in over his head. To complicate matters, Cav unintentionally summons the ghost of his dead boyfriend, who can’t seem to move on.
As the investigation deepens, Cav unearths disturbing similarities between his current case and a decades-old murder-suicide. By the time he realizes the power of the dark forces at work, it’s too late—he’s caught the attention of the killer, and he’ll soon learn there’s more than one kind of death….
OUT NOW! (Support local bookstores!)

Hi! I'm Aaron, and I write stuff.
Specifically gay romance, among other things. Feel free to check out all of my work for free at gayauthors.org/author/astone2292.
Some of my favorite stories are (links on titles):
Cernunnos - A deer shapeshifter finds himself living in a lycan community. Join him as he manages humanity's ways, discovers ranch dressing, and tries to figure out why the wolves don't want to eat him.
Primal Park - A Sci-Fi anthropomorphic anthology, co-authored with one of my favorite humans. Journey to Primal Park, an island destination designed for its customers become hunted prey, and possibly dragged to a bedroom...
In the Shadows - A shapeshifter romance trilogy. Vincent, a mage, finds a hunky alpha lycan who claims they are destined mates. Together, can they locate and defeat the man who murdered Vincent's parents?

Important tag information!
Any story I post will have #astone2292 attached to it. Be forewarned, you plagiarists. All of my posted work is copyrighted.
Not in the mood for reading but still feel like being a stalker? Understandable. Search #real life aaron and see what I'm up to, read what ungodly thoughts I have, and anything else that pops out of my fingietips.

A bit about me: I've been trapped in the retail industry since I was eleven. It's all I've ever known until I picked up writing as a hobby. I'm currently managing a liquor store full-time, so you can imagine my depression when I have to ring Mr. Borden up and he uses his debit card with "Our Savings" written in black Sharpie on it...
I have a wonderful husband, and we're in a fantastic open relationship. He's bi, so I let him have fun with cooties in the guest bedroom. He's the light of my life. I have no idea where I'd be without him. But still, don't let him deter you from messaging me about... well, you know... stuff.
I'm a proud little Kentucky man-child, at 5' 6" in height. I fit in the bottom kitchen cabinets uncomfortably, not that I have any personal experience or anything. I'm also a proud pedestrian. Walking everywhere is such a trip. You notice things in this world you never see from a windshield. Not all good, not all bad. Sometimes, you come across a sleeping bag next to a highway exit sign.
***
In the meantime, I'll be reblogging all sorts of stuff that may or may not be SFW. Enjoy!

My partner has finished their trilogy. A three part story told from three point of views
A knight who gave up his identity as a princess to pursue his own truth, only for the life he’s built for himself to be disrupted. His twin brother had been put to death by the Holy Army years ago when his father resisted the occupation, and Mychal had taken his brothers name to honor him as he found his peace- but now must take on his identity to reclaim their homeland- and his betrothal to Samira, his own childhood best friend after his fathers death leaves the land vulnerable.
A princess- her whole life she’s been promised to a man. Her First betrothed , Mychal Halwood was executed alongside his mother by the Holy Armies of her next promised match, Riyan Duane, Godhead of the Duality. As she prepares for her declaration, and second engagement- she sees a familiar face. One that is almost her best friend who fled years ago, but also a ghost of a boy long dead. Her discontent brings about a discovery of magic- but it isn’t the only thing Samira is struggling to understand about herself in the time before her holy wedding.
A prince with secrets. Years ago he helped his betrothed escape into the night, after a startling admission- they never should have been a princess at all. Since then Edris has been left with a horrifying question- is there another way to live? Is it that easy to choose your own desires, over the weight of the title you’ve held since birth? Can someone dare to carry both? And what will he do when that very same escapee returns and starts an army under the name of a boy his own father had executed? When someone is pursuing dreams you won’t let yourself have, is it easier to call them lies?
The Heretic Prince , the first novel in a trilogy by my amazing partner- needs YOUR help to be brought into the light! Donate now if you’re interested in a queer story , or three, by a queer author.
You can also follow the author @whatfordyouyearn and the series page @thehereticprinceseries

After scowling for a long moment, arms crossed, he said, surprise in his voice, “You aren’t lying to me.” Norris laughed sharply. “I’m not! Why would I be!” “How should I know! There are plenty of reasons for a weird young man in a weird old house–” “–My house is not weird,” Norris said heatedly. The old man rephrased his sentence in a clear attempt to mollify him. “It has a charmingly bohemian exterior with something deeply sinister at the center.” “Sinister?” Norris cocked a thumb at the black mirror. “You mean–?” “–I mean you.” Anger surged in Norris like a groundswell. Instead of growling, he sucked in a deep breath. Outside, all the windchimes on the porch jangled violently. He exhaled slowly. When he’d fully let the breath out, the windchimes stopped. Norris closed the front door. When he spoke his voice was a little shaky. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” The old man looked at him with a terror that was rapidly being subsumed by something excited and wily. “I think that I do.” He cleared his throat, obviously hiding the fact he was steadying his nerves. “In fact, young man, I think you may very well be my salvation.”
Chapter Four of my ongoing novel project is here, & so is Rufus! Read on to learn precisely why he's pestering our favorite Goth. It's a pretty juicy update, imho!
If you haven’t started reading yet, & ‘early 2000s trans Goth accidentally gets involved in a gay wizard's revenge quest against his former apprentice/lover’ sounds like fun, you can start reading here, for free! 🧙🌈

Witness of eternity, clinging to grief as I grasp at your love, your thorned crown of kisses marks me with memories of loves and lost phrases. Golden chains choke me, tether me b'twixt glorious heights and banality. Witness of eternity, clinging to grief as I gasp at words whispered lost loves and I pray for orations of my own.

Prompt: When prophecy fails
It's the end of the world, and in the chaos, everyone is screaming over each other "This is just like what my religion predicted!"
However, to anyone with any self-awareness, working eyeballs and ears, it is very obvious that this is cope. The events are wholly new to everyone and seemingly have never been described before.
It turns out that a long-forgotten caveman religion was the only one who got it right.
You, just like everyone else, are the victim of the relentless march of time and humanity's everlasting inability to keep accurate records of its history, free of bias and tampering. What now?
