I guess I never posted this here so… here’s Lauren in the style of The Troll comic!! The first in what I hope will be a continued series of style explorations >:O
Check under the cut for me rambling about how she fits in narratively and design wise!
Narrative
The narrative in the show is very different from the comics, not just in terms of the plot but in how the story is told - it’s a different medium so it does stuff differently! In short, the comics are a lot more rapid fire and comedic, The Troll in particular is so quick that it’s TV adaption was literally just the cold open of the first episode. Even Johanna only appears very briefly in this comic, so fitting in another character was already going to be a challenge lmao. But what made it even harder is the fact that Lauren was, obviously, designed to be a character that fits within the series, so there’s a lot about her character that just can’t translate into the comics. For example - one of her main uses in the show is to make the audience ask questions - “Hilda has a big sister? How old is she? She’s an adult, why is she still living with her family? Do she and Hilda share a dad? If she’s an adult then, did she know her dad? Why doesn’t she talk about him? Why does she take on so much?” Etc. This helps get the audience invested! And from everything we can tell these are questions the show wants to answer, but the comics…don’t. The comics don’t want you to question why Hilda lives in the middle of nowhere, they just want you to have a fun adventure with a little blue haired girl! Lauren being there in all her regular show glory makes that more complicated.
SO I had to work backwards, and try and think about what purpose a character like Lauren could serve in the comics, and why she would have been made in the first place, and this is what I ended up with -
Lauren is younger in the comics than she is in the show - she’s somewhere between 15-17, and the basis for her character is “a teenager from the viewpoint of a young child”. You know how you view teens when you’re a kid - they’re scary! They’re like adults except with no responsibilities, they’re aloof and want nothing to do with you but they seem so cool! Like they can do whatever they want! And you have no clue what that even is. I think this age makes more sense for the comics, as it means the audience doesn’t have to question why she’s still living at home or anything like that lmao - she’s just a kid!
Lauren seems very aloof and irresponsible, she’s always wandering off and doing random bits and bobs around the house. Even from Johannas perspective, she sees her as a bit of a liability. She’s kind of a gag character at this point - since there’s really no other way to fit her in at this point. I like the idea of her appearing when Hilda opens the front door, and she’s this terrifying silhouette holding an axe and staring down at Hilda, who screams in terror. Only for the next panel to reveal it’s just Lauren
I’ll get into this in more detail a the comics go on but, the idea with Lauren is that as the comics continue she’ll become more and more similar to the character we see in the show. Not really because she’s changed all that much - but because the other characters (and by extension the reader) start to see her differently. Once she gets more of a spotlight outside from being a one off gag character, she stops being the misunderstood teen and starts being…understood!
So, whilst Lauren seems irresponsible and reckless, she doesn’t mean to be. I think one of the reasons she comes off like this is bc she’s got heavy autism coding in the comics - she takes things very literally. Like, if Johanna tells her to watch Hilda - she will! She’ll watch her walk right off a cliff. Because Johanna never told her to keep her safe, just to watch her!
She still does chores and stuff around the house but, there’s not really any opportunity to showcase that in this comic lol
Design
The biggest challenge design wise was her body type. In terms of human characters, The Troll features just Hilda and Johanna - who appears for as a half body for three panels. Both of them are very skinny and noodle, which was an issue because Lauren…isn’t lmao. She’s buff! That’s her thing! Soooo here’s the solution I came up with -
I decided to make her as noodly as the other characters, but to lean really into the buff aspect of her character despite that. I drew her holding big ol axes and rocks to show that - she’s comically strong! I think that adds to both the gag and kind of mysterious part of her character - this Lauren isn’t intriguing in a “makes you question hildas family history and important elements of the show” way, she’s intriguing in a “what the fuck” way
Another thing I played with was her hair - the art style and character designs change a lot throughout the comic, it takes a little bit before certain characters core features are figured out. So I thought it would be fun to show that through her hair, which is just slightly off from her show design!
Uhhh what else - oh I gave her freckles like Hilda! I think that shows that she’s younger than Johanna quite well :)
I also just tried to use simplistic shapes, and give her an easily recognisable look. Just….tried to make her the kind of character I could imagine appearing alongside some other simplistic Hilda doodles from the concept art pages
OH ALSO ALSO I tried to lean into a 2010s influence with her design, mainly in her hair, by having one eye be fully covered
I thiiiink that’s all I have to say lmao! This was so much fun to make, I love imagining how my girl fits into stuff and this art style was a joy to draw in - it’s so fun! Really grew on me as I drew in it more, I def wanna return to it someday :)

I think Nightvale is a livable city. It is very opressive in it's own ways and people fall easily into mob mentality when afraid but also there is this genuine sense of comunity, this feeling that people will be there to help you in bad situations, there is cool things and wonder and people just deal with the bad ones and enjoy the good and live and florish.
Nightvale is a place I could live. It's horrifying but so is most places under capitalism and a new different form of opression and terror isn't that new but the lights above the Arby's are. And they forgive. There's a reason so many of Lubelle's scientists abandoned her because they found comumity and people in the town they cared about.
Desert Bluffs Too. Well it is not livable. It has the same problems of terror and opression but also the worst parts of a small comunity, the judgment, the notion that while people will help you when you are having a bad time they will also insult you behind your back for being in a bad time to begin with. The opressive force of social standarts except now besides all it already does it literally kills you (my autism makes me cringe hard imagining it). The constant fear of punishment, the fear that if you show you fear you'll be punished. The refusal to feel anything at all. I just feel really bad for the Desert Bluff Too (and just the Desery Bluff on general but the ones in Nightvale are okay now) citzens and specially Kevin because they just live in a nightmare without respite or at least being raised to feel guilty for the respite (Kevin original fear of Charles and Donovan because they gave him feeligs instead of pleasant plastic smille moments), the levels of trauma. Just poor everyone (including Lauren, I mean they tatooed a frown on her face, she is winning now but the trauma).

Episode 11 first half thoughts :
1. Jordans the worst. Literally so annoying. He keeps talking about controlling the game but tbh no ones controlling anything. Myles and QT are smart and strategic, it's not their fault they've done a good job with strong alliances.
Plus dude wth r u trying to do? You're the one obsessed with control.
I swear everytime he speaks he sounds like those crazed " the earth is flat" or "vaccines cause autism" folks.
Like dude calm down. Y does it bother u so much that myles n QT r at the top? That's literally the whole point of the game?
And myles is shady from the first msg? Aren't u the one who chose to talk to him about the tea?? Ur the one who can't have a single conversation without trying to bring shade.
And lol u stupid if u think getting rid of myles would get u to win. Ur last, dead last Regardless. Olivia has come on top tons of times, so even if u take out myles and QT, we still have kyle and Olivia.
2. Lauren is annoying. Not like Jordan, but what pisses me off about her is that shes.. Stupid? Or atleast she's trying to be idk. She had a good thing going on in the start, I def thought she'd be a strong player but so far she hasn't managed to get anything done? Idk if she doing it on purpose , but this whole "oopsie I mwade a wittle mwistake, I didnt mean too act🥹" needs to go.
You're a gamer, a twitch streamer, how's ur strategy game so weak???
She has a nice vibe, and she seems like a genuinely good person, but she's just not bringing much to the game.
3. Myles, QT, Kyle and even Olivia are my top choices.
I would not be mad if any of them won tbh. Just not Jordan.
I really hope Olivia makes the right choice in the end. I'm gonna be so mad if she sends home myles.
Side note though, this season has def been interesting to watch. Season 5 was such a bore, I slipped to finale just to see the winner and end it.

The Long Way To a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers series) by Becky Chambers
Rosemary Harper just got a job on the motley crew of the Wayfarer, a spaceship that works with tunneling new wormholes through space. With a past she wants to leave behind, Rosemary is happy to travel the far reaches of the universe with the chaotic crew, but when they land the job of a life time, things suddenly get a lot more dangerous. A bit of a tumblr classic in its day, this is a cozy space opera with an episodic feel and vividly realized characters and cultures. While pretty light on romance and focusing found family, there is a main f/f relationship.
Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi
Ascension follows Alana Quick, an expert Sky Surgeon who stows away on a spaceship in hopes of landing herself a job. But the ship and its crew are in deeper waters than she expected, facing threats emerging from a whole other universe, all of them searching for the same person: Alana’s spiritually enlightened sister. Undeniably a bit of an odd read, Ascension is also very creative and features polyamorous lesbian relationship.
Illuminae (The Illulminae Files) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff*
Young adult told through the medium of transcripts, text messages and the like (this is one of few books where I highly recommend reading a physical copy over a digital or audio copy as the visual aspect is much more enjoyable like that). After their colony is attacked, the surviving inhabitants flee on spaceships, attempting to avoid the pursuing killers while also dealing with a deadly maddening plague on board and a ruthless ship AI seemingly losing its mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kea's Flight by Erika Hammerschmidt & John C. Ricker
Young adult. Kea has been in exile since before she was born. In a future where abortion has been forbidden, Earth has found a new way of handling unwanted children: send them off to space to colonize new planets. Kea has lived her entire life on a spaceship, surrounded by other kids rejected for 'flaws' in their genetic makeup, Kea herself being on the autism spectrum. The ship follows a strict authority, but when a new threat appears, Kea and her friends must rise up to ensure they make it to their new home.
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James*
Young adult. Romy is the only survivor on a spaceship headed toward a new planet, her only contact with other people being messages sent to and from Earth which take months to arrive. Then she receives news: another ship has been sent, one which is more advanced than hers and will eventually catch up. Ecstatic about the prospect of meeting other people, Romy begins communicating with J, the sole passenger of the other ship, and finds herself developing feelings for him. But Romy knows nothing about J, and have begun receiving worrisome messages from Earth...
Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch universe) by Ann Leckie*
A space opera in which sentient spaceships can walk the ground in stolen human bodies, so called ancillaries. One of these ancillaries, the sole survivor after the complete destruction of her ship and crew, is on the hunt for revenge against the leader of the Empire for her crimes. This series does very cool things with gender and culture!

The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley
Zan wakes without memory, a passenger aboard one of the living world-ships of Legion, a fleet of decaying generations ships. Told she's the salvation meant to free them from the fleet, Zan is flung head first into a brutal and bloody conflict. This book fucked me up when I read it. It’s weird, it’s gross, there’s So Much Viscera, there are literally no men, it has living spaceships and biotech but in the most horrific way imaginable. Had I to categorize it I would call it grimdark military sf. It’s an experience but not necessarily a pleasant one.
Ninefox Gambit (The Machineries of Empire) by Yoon Ha Lee*
Disgraced Captain Kel Cheris is given a second chance by allying with and becoming the host for undead Commander Shous Jedao, who in life never lost a battle, but also went mad and massacred his own army. Now, Cheris must decide just how far she can trust him, with her forces as well as with her sense of self. Military space opera where belief and culture shape the laws of reality, causing all kinds of atrocities as empires do everything in their power to force as many people as possible to conform to their way of life to strengthen their technology and weapons. It’s also very queer, with major gay, lesbian and trans characters, albeit little to no romance.
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
Life on the lower decks of the generation ship HSS Matilda is hard for Aster, an outcast even among outcasts, trying to survive in a system not dissimilar to the old antebellum South. The ship’s leaders have imposed harsh restrictions on their darker skinned people, using them as an oppressed workforce as they travel through space toward their supposed Promised Land. But as Aster finds a link between the death of the ship’s sovereign and the suicide of her own mother, she realizes there may be a way off the ship.

172 Hours on the Moon by Johan Harstad*
Young adult horror. NASA is finally returning to the moon, and to gain the needed funding and attention they hold a world-wide lottery: three teenagers will get to travel to a recently revealed moon base alongside the trained astronauts. For Antoine, Midori, and Mia, this is the chance of a lifetime. But there's a reason NASA stayed away from the moon for so long, and while three teens may be going there, only one will return... This book scared the shit out of me as a teen, recommended for slowburn mix of supernatural and sci-fi horror.
Children of Time (Children of Time series) by Adrian Tchaikovsky*
Millennia and generation spanning sci-fi. After the collapse of the earthen empire, a planet once part of a project to uplift other species to sentience is left to develop on its own, resulting not in the intelligent monkeys once intended but in sentient giant spiders. Millennia later, what remains of humanity arrives looking for a new home, only to be met by the ancient, artificial remains of the woman who once led the uplift project - and she is not willing to let them disturb her spiders, or her planet, no matter how desperate they are.
All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells*
After having hacked its own governor module, SecUnit uses its small amount of new freedom to secretly download and watch as much media as it can between doing its job guarding humans. But when the scientists it’s been charged with keeping safe come under attack, it must make a choice about whether to continue keeping its freedom secret or risk it all to save them. The series features both novellas and full length novels, and balances humor with scathing critique of capitalism.

Dust (Jacob's Ladder series) by Elizabeth Bear
In a dying spaceship, orbiting an equally dying sun, noblewoman Perceval waits for her own gruesome death. Having been captured by an opposing house, her wings severed and life forfeit, Perceval's execution is imminent - until a young servant charged with her care proves to be Perceval's long lost sister. To stop a war between houses likely to doom them all, the two flee together across a crumbling, dangerous spaceship. And at its core waits Jacob Dust, god and angel, all that remains of what the ship once was. And he wants Perceval.
Binti (Binti trilogy) by Nnedi Okorafor
Young adult novella. Binti is the first of the Himba people to be accepted into the prestigious Oomza University, the finest place of higher learning in all the galaxy. But as she embarks on her interstellar journey, the unthinkable happens: her ship is attacked by the terrifying Meduse, an alien race at war with Oomza University.
A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe (The Salvagers) by Alex White
In a universe where science and magic work hand in hand, Boots Elsworth makes a living selling fake treasure maps and Nilah Brio is a racer. When one of Boots' maps turns out to be more real than expected and Nilah has to go on the run after having been framed for a murder, the two find themselves on the same spaceship, working with Boots' old captain to find the rumored treasure and reveal the conspiracy it's hiding before the people hunting them catch up. Features a main f/f relationship.

The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez
A strange child lands on an isolated planet, scaring its inahbitants into handing him over into the hands of Nia Amani. As captain of a transport ship, Nia is not only the planet's only contact with the outside world, she is also a woman outside of time, years compressing into months as she travels through space at high speed. Now responsible for a child who doesn't speak and in a galaxy that wishes them ill, she must rethink exactly what she wants to do with her life, and what she's prepared to give up. Features multiple major queer characters.
Eacaping Exodus (Escaping Exodus duology) by Nicky Drayden
Seske is the heir to the leader of a clan living inside a gigantic, spacefaring beast, of which they frequently need to catch a new one to reside in as their presence slowly kills the beast from the inside. While I found the ending rushed with regards to plot and character, the worldbuilding is very fresh and the overall plot of survival and class struggle an interesting one. It’s also sapphic!
Dead Silence Here by S.A. Barnes
Horror. As her current mission as team leader for a small repair crew in distant space nears its end, Claire grows desperate to find a way to not have to return to a life on Earth. When the crew picks up a distress signal from Aurora, a luxury cruise ship thought lost decades ago, she sees a chance to make enough money on salvage to buy her own ship. But Aurora is housing horrifying secrets beyond its cold hull, and Claire's own past is coming back to literally haunt her. If she wants to survive, dangerous truths must be revealed.

Activation Degradation by Marina J. Lostetter
Unit Four comes to life in the middle of a war. The mine it was created to care for is under attack, and as Unit Four is activated with the memories of its predecessors, it is thrown into the task of protecting it at any cost. When the battle leads to its capture, it is prepared to do anything to stop its captors, even as their very presence causes it to question all that it knows. Includes multiple major intersex characters.
This Alien Shore by C.S. Friedman
Space opera in which humanity found a way to faster than light travel and began establishing colonies all over the galaxy, only to belatedly realize the method of FTL caused irreversible mutations and disabilities and leaving their nascent colonies to die. Much later, many of the colonies have survived and thrived, and one has found a new method of FTL travel, allowing an interconnected space society to grow. However, Earth is on the hunt for their method and is prepared to do anything to steal it. Trapped in the middle of all this and forced on the run is young Jamisia, who is little by little coming to realize that not only might she be the very solution Earth is after, she’s also not alone in her own mind and body.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir*
Ryland Grace just woke up from a coma, unable to remember anything. He finds himself alone on a spaceship, the rest of the crew dead, and as his memories slowly trickle back, he realizes he’s been sent on a mission: to find a solution to the impending doom of the earth. Still struggling with holes in his memories, Ryland tries to fulfill his mission, but as he gets closer to his goal, he discovers someone else got there first. And they aren’t anything close to human. Funny, heartfelt, and heavy on the science.

House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds
Six million years in the future, humanity has spread across the entire Milky Way galaxy. Purslane and Campion are both clones of the same woman, sent into the galaxy millions of years ago to explore along with almost a thousand clones like them. Every 200 000 years they all meet to compare memories and experiences. But this time Purslane and Campion arrive late - and discover that a secret millions of years in the making has led to an extinction level attack against their kind. Now they must find out the truth before their line is completely wiped out. Absolutely wild world-building, featuring various kinds of posthumans (among which the clones are, shockingly, the most similar to people of our time).
Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone
Vivian Liao is a highly successful innovator, but she may have bitten off more than she can chew and fears the government is coming for her. As she goes into hiding, she attempts to pull off one last stunt that could fix everything - but something goes wrong, and suddenly Vivian finds herself waking up in the far future, under attack by an army of robots in space. Hoping to find her way back home, Vivian must assemble a crew of dangerous outlaws and outcasts to help her hunt down the Empress of Forever, the all-powerful entity who pulled her into the future. Lesbian main character.
Finder (Finder Chronicles) by Suzanne Palmer
Fergus Ferguson is a finder, and his latest job has just taken him to a small colony in the farthest corner of inhabited space. There he's searching for a stolen spaceship, what he thinks will be an easy job. But things become complicated as Fergus' arrival inadvertently sets off a civil war, forcing him to ally with the thief's enemies to get out alive with his prize. And beyond it all, the ships of a dangerous and mysterious alien species watches over it all, picking people off when least expected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Space Opera (Space Opera duology) by Catherynne M. Valente
Eurovision in space! If you lose, humanity is doomed! Good luck! The sentient species of the galaxy have chosen to face each other not in war but in a musical contest, and now humanity is invited to partake. The problem? If we lose, our species as a whole will be exterminated. While I found this book as a whole slightly gimmicky, it’s a fun and flashy experience with some wild and creative alien species.
Blindsight (Firefall duology) by Peter Watts*
Vampires and aliens and questions of the nature of consciousnesses, oh my! A ship is sent to investigate the sudden appearance of an alien vessel at the edge of the solar system, but the crew isn’t prepared for the horrors awaiting them. No, seriously, this book will fuck you up, highly recommend if you’re okay with a lot of techno babble and existential horror.
The Outside (The Outside trilogy) by Ada Hoffman*
AKA the book the put me in an existential crisis. Souls are real, and they are used to feed AI gods in this lovecraftian inspired sci-fi where reality is warped and artificial gods stand against real, unfathomable ones. Autistic scientist Yasira is accused of heresy and, to save her eternal soul, is recruited by cybernetic ‘angels’ to help hunt down her own former mentor, who is threatening to tear reality itself apart. Sapphic main character.
Honorary mentions AKA these didn't really work for me but maybe you guys will like them: Dare Mighty Things by Heather Kaczynski, Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes, Medusa Uploaded by Emily Devenport, We Are Legion (We Are Bob) by Dennis E. Taylor, The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang

2022 Favourites
In no particular order. This is content I've read and watched in 2022, not necessarily content released in 2022.
Books
1. A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland: m/m heroic fantasy + non-binary characters. This was one of my most expected novels of the year and I was fully satisfied with the result. One of the protagonists suffers from severe anxiety.
2. [French] L’Héritage des Rois-Passeurs by Manon Fargetton: portal fantasy with a lesbian protagonist. The French language in the secondary world is different, but I don't know if the author invented the variations or based them on something real.
3. Sword Dance by AJ Demas: m/nb historical fantasy. This trilogy takes place in a fictional world based on Ancient Greece. It's a delightful mix of intrigue and domesticity shenanigans.
4. The Hollow Star Saga by Ashley Shuttleworth: f/f and m/m urban fantasy (YA). This series about the fae also includes a touch of Greek mythology. I care a lot about all the characters.
5. Youngblood by Sasha Laurens: f/f urban fantasy (YA). This is my favourite queer vampire novel. It's an excellent mix of vampire lore, romance and mystery.
6. The Magic Between by Stephanie Hoyt: m/m magical realism. The characters have superpowers, but it's not superhero fiction. It's a fun bi4bi romance.
7. One Verse Multi by Sander Santiago: m/m/m science fiction with a trans male protagonist. This is my favourite read of the year. I loved the science in this story and how the author played with the Mandela effect (false memories shared by many people).
8. Safe and Sound by EM Lindsey: m/m romance. This is a very moving hurt & comfort novel. This author always does a great job with the intersectionality of queerness and disability, deafness and vertigo in this case.
9. If You Still Recognise Me by Cynthia So: f/f romance. This novel is about identity (queer, but also British and Cantonese) and fandom.
10. [Spanish] Anne sin Filtros by Iria Parente and Selene Pascual: f/f/m romance with a trans male protagonist (YA). This novel is also about queerness and fandom. I've read several books by these authors and this is my fave.
 TV shows
1. Ancient Detective: murder mystery/wuxia with BL vibes + a non-binary character in the last few episodes. While this c-drama is mostly m/f, I appreciated the queer touches, as well as the complex plot.
2. Legend of Yunze: GL wuxia. This c-drama is a quick watch, with episodes that are only a few minutes long. What's nice is that the f/f is not very censored for a Chinese show.
3. The Lost Tomb/DMBJ franchise: adventure/fantasy with BL vibes. This c-drama franchise kept me busy for a good part of the year and I estimate that I've seen about half of it. It covers a genre that is relatively rare in Western shows.
4. Bulgasal: urban fantasy with a queer-coded villain. Sure, queer-coded villains aren't the best form of representation, but the one in this k-drama is very well-written. The reincarnation plot is fascinating as well.
5. Vampire Academy: urban fantasy with some f/f and some m/m (YA). I loved the movie way back and I'm glad that they've added queer representation to the show, even though it would have been even better if they had made the Lissa/Rose subtext canon.
6. Wednesday: murder mystery/urban fantasy with a probably a-spec protagonist (YA). This is a delightful adaptation of the Addams Family, true to the old movies.
7. Love in the Air: BL romance. This addictive Thai drama is my favourite show of the year. Payu/Rain are my fave couple, they're so playful and loving. For Prapai/Sky, there's a lot of hurt & comfort, which gave me so many feels.
8. Semantic Error: BL romance. This k-drama's protagonist is on the autism spectrum. It's enemies-to-lovers, or rather annoyances-to-lovers.
9. She Makes My Heart Flutter: GL romance. This k-drama is a quick watch. I love that it mostly focuses on sapphic friendships.
10. Heartstopper: m/m romance with some f/f and a trans girl (YA). I love the webcomic and the adaptation is really well done. It's such a sweet story.

It's not to bother you. You have published that you are fat but that does not matter to me, you are my idol. I just want to ask you. You were always fat or before you weren't. sorry for being kind of stupid. I'm worried that you've been diagnosed with anemia but I hope you are and I'm sorry for that question.
Lol it's fine I don't mind. Yeah I've always been overweight, ever since I was a kid. My mom made me separate meals from everyone else because I would get upset and not eat unless it was what I liked. And my dad always brought me McDonald's, cakes, takeaways, ice-cream, etc. My dad tends to overfeed people (and our cats) but it makes some sense since he fears starvation. And because I was a kid, I obviously didn't care what or how much I ate. My mom did try to moderate my eating but I would just sneak food when she wasn't looking.
As I got older I was mad at my parents for letting me become overweight as a kid but now I'm an adult my weight is my responsibility. I love vegetables now, especially broccoli. I still eat sugary stuff but not enough to put on weight. I've lost some weight but I'm still built like big chungus so I'm still aiming to lose more. I should really do more exercise but I'm just not motivated right now.
So yeah I will get my weight in order eventually, it's just taking some time. Nothing ever goes well when I rush so I'm just taking my time. I was anemic but I had my B-12 injections for that and now I feel better. Still gotta get my thyroid and Folic Acid sorted out.
But yeah my health is improving, just slowly. I'm still waiting to get an autism diagnosis too so that's been bothering me for a while and hasn't helped with my mental health but I'm sure it'll put my mind at ease once I get closure for it. Also I need an operation which I can't get until I've lost more weight, according to my doctor. It's nothing serious, just a physical change I want to get due to a problem that occurred during puberty.
So yeah that's your Lauren Health update.

Charles and/or Daniel hcs 🤯 ⁉️⁉️⁉️
I can give you a few! Though i Don't have too much for Daniel </3
Charles: - Relatively easy going, unless you manage to piss him off. Then he'd probably punch you in the face, or just give you a stern talking to like the dad he is [affectionate], depending on what it was you did. - Might actually fucking kill you if you shit talk his boyfriend(s) too much! - Warm, very very warm (awesome for Kevin, he loves the Warmth) - Autism. - He is intersex! Has boobs but did not get top surgery for them because he didn't feel the need to (hc stolen from lauren @/tgirlteeth because it's actually canon. to me.)
Daniel: - Although whether he was originally human or not is unknown, post Strex Daniel is convinced he was formerly a normal human before Strex got him. - HATES Kasper. Does not get along with him at all. This is because Kasper absolutely loves turning people into robots of servitude, it's his favourite activity! Not to mention how he made himself a cyborg by choice. This pisses Daniel off big time. - Horrified of cats, has been ever since The Incident.

omg i wanna know more abt your ocs!!!
Thanks that really means a lot.
so I made up them in 7th grade when I was going through a hard time, they were a sort of coping mechanism and although they’ve changed a lot, their personalities and stuff have stayed the same. They also all represent different sides of me.
Riley:
Riley Gomez is five foot two inches tall. They are 13 years old, in 8th grade, and use any pronouns. It started with messy short hair, but he has a bob now. It’s blue. So yes, ae have blue hair and pronouns. Ve represent the chaotic side of me. She loves mobile games, ce has adhd and although they don’t show it with voir chaotic personality, he feels immature and left out a lot. It’s a genderfluid asexual lesbian.
Charlie:
Charlie Lauren Blake is a transfem omnisexual Jew and Riley’s girlfriend. She uses exclusively she/her pronouns. Her deadname was Charles, but she always went by Charlie, so not much changed there. She’s five foot six and a massive theater kid. She represents the calm, creative side of me. she has autism and is depressed but copes with it much better than I do. She has ginger hair which is usually braided.
Maria:
Maria Gomez is five foot five inches tall and fifteen years old, in 10th grade. She’s allocishet and is an ally(tm). She has a boyfriend who I decided right now is bi. She has ear-length brown hair which she usually wears with a headband. she represents the responsible part of me. She does well in school while being like a third parent to her little siblings and having fun with friends as well, having that perfect balance.
Matt:
I’m not really sure who Matt represents. He’s a seventh grader, younger than Riley and Maria, and is fairly close with Riley. He’s cis and pan. He’s the youngest sibling but isn’t spoiled. He’s cocky in a good way, he’s nice, and he’s funny. Maybe he’s who I wish I was.

"Gabriel’s autism was a contributing factor in most of the harrowing incidents he went through. Clinicians suspect that the condition increases the risk for certain kinds of trauma, such as bullying and other forms of abuse. Yet few studies have investigated that possibility or the psychological aftermath of such trauma, including PTSD.
“We know that about 70 percent of kids with autism will have a comorbid psychiatric disorder,” says Connor Kerns, assistant professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder are all known to be more common among autistic people than in the general population, but PTSD had largely been overlooked. Until a few years ago, only a few studies had delved into the problem, and most suggested that less than 3 percent of autistic people have PTSD, about the same rate as in typical children. If that were true, Kerns points out, PTSD would be one of the only psychiatric conditions that’s no more common in people with autism than in their typical peers.
One potential explanation, Kerns says, is that, like other psychiatric conditions, PTSD simply looks different in people with autism than it does in the general population. “It seems possible to me that it’s not that PTSD is less common but potentially that we’re not measuring it well, or that the way traumatic stress expresses itself in people on the spectrum is different,” Kerns says. “It seemed we were ignoring a huge part of the picture.”
Kerns and a few other researchers are trying to get a better understanding of the interplay between autism and PTSD, which they hope will inform and shape treatment for young people like Gabriel. The more they dig in, the more these researchers are finding that many autistic people might have some form of PTSD. “We’re all just trying to put together the pieces and recognize that it’s an important area that requires further study,” she says. “It’s been a call to arms for the field to start looking at this.”
These researchers have their work cut out for them. In the typical population, PTSD is fairly well defined. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-5, psychiatry’s guide to diagnoses, PTSD usually develops after someone sees or experiences a terrifying or life-threatening event. After that initial episode, any reminder of it can trigger panic, extreme startle reflexes and flashbacks. Beyond that, however, there’s a wide variety in the way PTSD manifests: It can lead to hypervigilance and anger; it can cause recurring nightmares and other sleep issues; or it can lead to depression, persistent fear, aggression, irritability or difficulty concentrating and remembering things.
“If you do the math, according to the PTSD criteria in the DSM-5, you can have 636,000 different combinations of symptoms that describe PTSD,” says Danny Horesh, head of the Trauma and Stress Research Lab at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel. Given all the traits in people with autism that may overlay these permutations, “you have a lot of reason to think that their version of PTSD might be very different,” he says."

Some years back, I went to a psychiatrist who was so god awful telling me I couldn’t have adhd (despite having every single symptom and being dx several times) bc of my weight which is the most ridiculous thing ever esp since weight management is super hard w adhd 🤦🏻‍♀️ even told me I don’t have depression and that *everyone* gets suicidal excuse me…?? Only thing I agree w is him saying I have autism but at the same time I do not want his dx for that and wish I could get a proper dx in the states bc it’s so expensive here. He’s also in an another country so same rules do not apply there and didn’t charge bc he’s a family friend so I had to be “grateful” for that. I just wish I had kept everything vague and have never felt so invalidated before
Hey there,
Firstly, I am so sorry of the experiences that you had with that psychiatrist that you saw. Dismissing you saying you couldn’t have ‘this’ or ‘that’ and that everyone gets suicidal so you couldn’t possibly have depression either. I sounds as though seeing this psychiatrist did much more harm than good and for that I am truly sorry.
I know how comforting it can be to have a diagnosis/s as it can help to make everything make sense with what you may be going through and experiencing, plus it can be nice to just put a name to all of the symptoms you are having! But, having a diagnosis isn’t everything. What I mean by this is that a diagnosis doesn’t change who you are as a person and nor does it make you better or worse. A diagnosis is simply just that, a label to help to put together all your symptoms so that a professional knows what you may have and then can consequently help to support you and get help and treatment where possible. And with saying this it is also more than normal and OK to get second opinions if you choose to, as it’s important that you feel as comfortable as possible with what the psychiatrist/ health professional is telling you and it’s OK to disagree with them if what you feel that are telling you is completely untrue for you.
So, in short, I know how invalidated you must have felt and are still feeling, but try to remind yourself that despite your really bad experiences, there are some really good psychiatrists out there, that like the one you saw, may be able to bulkbill or not charge you for the consult, even in the States – it’s just a matter of trying to find one and so all hope is not lost for getting those correct diagnosis/s if this is what you truly want/ need. I also want you to know that if you are unable to see or find a psychiatrist who may be able to bulk bill/ not charge you, then you don’t need to accept the first lot of diagnosis that you got from the one that made you feel so invalidated. And I know that this is hard, but just try to be happy with what you do have/ know and try to be kind to yourself.
I really hope that this has helped somewhat and please do let us know if we can help to support you in any other way!
I’m thinking of you and hope that you are going OK!
Take care,
Lauren
