I keep thinking about August posting the video. When we now know that he is quite possibly queer himself, it shouldn't make sense. But we also know that that initiation was fucking traumatizing for him. He must have been hazed so badly for that. So my thoughts are he internalized the homophobia, and he was taught that liking men and being elite didn't go together. So Wille having sex with a boy meant he wasn't fit to be a leader. This was what August was taught.

And also, do you remember him saying to Sara: "Wille has everything!" when asked why he posted the video? Maybe it wasn't just the monarchy, Wille also got act on being queer!

AND Wille got to be popular and be liked, even when he didn't even try.

Maybe August genuinly wanted to help Wille when he arrived, by teaching him everything that he had needed to learn to be accepted. That it was important to follow the rules and accept the hierarchy, and it was important who you hung out with. But then Wille didn't need August's advice, those rules for getting through Hillerska didn't apply to Wilhelm. And on top of that he got to like men without being hazed for it.

He had everything August had ever wanted. And then he threatened/tried to take away everything August had fought so, so hard to achieve: his friends, his status and his safety.

Just to be clear: I am not excusing what he did, because that is not possible. I am only trying to make sense of it all, exploring what might have been going on in his head to make that decision.

I was going to reply to this post by @young-royals-confessions by saying that we can dislike August and feel sympathy for him at the same time. His trauma doesn't turn him into a good person. And it certainly isn't a get out of jail free card. He hasn't done anything to make amends and own up to his mistakes (yet). But that I think maybe a seed of change has been planted within him.

But maybe the point of August's arc in season 3 is not whether or not he is still a bad guy, but something else entirely.

Cause are there really people who are entirely good or entirely bad out there? Maybe by letting us see behind August's facade and learn about his previous experiences and feelings, we get to experience that getting to know someone will make us see people in a different light? That we can understand why they did what they did, even if we don't condone the actions? That we can sympathize even with the most horrenduous person we ever met? That even when someone did something unjustified and inexcusable, they are still a person worthy of love and empathy?

Maybe we should stop seeing people as either good or bad. If there's anything this show is trying to tell us, it's that people are complex, everybody make mistakes, everyone has flaws, and you don't know what anyone is going through until you get to know them. The facade is only a facade.

And to do better and act kinder, we need support and we need to be challenged, and we need love.

So there's that.

Listening to Britney Spears’ memoir; sad, funny and beautiful. I cried throughout. I’m sure there was a ghost writer but the way she writes sounds like the lyrics to some of her songs. Michelle Williams is such a good narrator too.
