A NOTE FROM PRESENT ME: Omg I found this in my drafts and I'm so sorry, fashion anon. I was planning on finding reference photos and linking them in the more in depth descriptions but I never got around to it. I guess you'll have to use your imagination for this! I'm so sorry it took so long!

Hi fashion anon!! Welcome back and thanks for continuing such a fun prompt!

K this post is MASSIVE so I’m putting all the in-depth descriptions under the cut. Here’s the summaries of my ideas for the main three characters I’ll be doing:

First and foremost, my girl Misa!! Dude, I had such a hard time figuring out what to do with her. Unlike L and Light, who’s styles aged like milk left outside on the sun, Misa’s design is timeless. I legit sat here for a good half hour stressing about how I was gonna do this until I remembered--- she's a MODEL. She can wear ANYTHING. With that, I decided to base her style off of Harajuku Street fashion! I had to go big or go home so as not to disgrace her character lol

I'm doing two different looks for Mello! I always got the impression that his design was supposed to lean edgier and more modern, but his canon outfit is... So weird. (Not nearly as egregious as Matt's vest thing though lol.) He also works with the mob, so I wanted to give him one high-fashion look and then one crime-boss look.

Near was by far the easiest in this group, I didn't feel like I was way out of my depth with him LMAO. Boy enjoys comfort. I’m giving him a cottage-core look in pastels to stick with his canon colour palette (or lack thereof lol), plus some chunky sneakers. Did he even wear shoes to the warehouse? Like bruh, you’re gonna get tetanus.

Here we go!

For Misa: (small disclaimer though, I’m not super familiar with the subculture, so I’m basing all the looks off of individual pieces rather than sweeping statements about the movement as a whole)

The one commonality I’ve observed in Harajuku--- and the only comment I’ll make of the movement as a whole--- is that “more is more!” The more layers of outrageous clothes/accessories, the better! Here’s a couple articles I read about it in case you want to fact check outside of this!

First I'd give her two-toned hair (platinum blonde/black) split right down the middle. The styling options are endless, you can go from high-fashion to punk/goth in a heartbeat. She wouldn't be Misa without her pigtails, so if she was modeling for more editorial looks they can tie them into tighter buns.

More intense eyeliner looks are very in nowadays--- ALSO the graphic eyeliner trend would give her endless possibilities

For more casual wear, she's already THE og E-girl, so I'll just list a bunch of accessories that I think would look good on her instead of being redundant with styling

Give her those kitty-ear headphones too (and a gamer chair, ring light, and LED strip lights bc might as well oh god Misa stay away from tiktok PLS)

I saw these fingernail rings that would def suit her goth aesthetic (note from present me, they were literally silver nail covers that had a ring you'd wear above the last knuckle)

She's definitely the type to get long acrylic nails (I'm jealous of anyone who can wear them comfortably, I'd just gnaw them off out of annoyance) with intricate designs. It'd be cool if she got some stained glass window/church imagery inspired ones to fit the themes of the show

Other than that, I scrolled through images of all her canon outfits and they all hold up (except maybe ditch the horizontal striped shirts if you want to leave y2k territory)

For Mello:

Might be controversial, but I'm changing up his haircut from the bob to an undercut/bowl cut like this photo. I think it still captures the energy of his original design.

Then I'd give him these Balenciagas with studded heels (no reference I'm so sorry.)

Bringing back his leather pants in a deep purple

For the crime-boss look:

I wanted to include his weird affinity for fur-lined hoods on his jackets. We could change the fur lining to a straight up feather boa.

With that look the bowl cut I gave him earlier might be too out of place, so I'd give him just an undercut like this here.

There ya go. A young mafia leader with STYLE. Both routes are pretty ostentatious, but man's so dramatic already he can pull it off lol

For Near:

I think his hairstyle's pretty timeless so I'd leave it as is and resist the urge to give everyone a mullet

Alternatively, Braided-Ponytail!Older-Near

I'd give him a pastel-filled wardrobe to stick closer to his canon colour palette (or lack thereof lol)

Lots of baggy sweaters and several cute pairs of overalls!

Then lastly I’d give him a small collection of chunky sneakers so he’s not in agony from stepping on legos all day

Tadaaa!

Sidenote, he’d def be the type to wear ankle high socks with Nike slides and I would allow him and only him to do so

Doctor Who: At The Proms (2010)

So I don't often watch The Proms, but there are Doctor Who episodes, so naturally I am going to watch. (Warning, I'm typing as I'm watching so this could be rambly) Also this is just the Highlights I'm watching!

So this one starts with a small making of, which is fun. Karen Gillan is presenting, which is perfect, because I am in love with Karen Gillan.

I'm really excited for this Prom, because I love this series, Matt Smith's first series, its utter perfection.

Gosh, that first piece of music introducing the 11th Doctor is just amazing, it feels new, does that make sense, I always felt like going from David Tennant to Matt Smith was a big change and this music describes it perfectly.

I love the piece of music that plays at the end of Matt Smith's first episode it's literal magic. And you know it's for the eleventh doctor. Oooo they have silurians running round the hall, and Judoons! The Judoons look a little silly not gonna lie. And the not vampires from Vampires in Venice, they are creepy, aren't they.

More Cybermen, yay! They look wicked.

Oooo one of the Daleks are here, one of the Ironside ones! And a white Dalek! Love those colourful ones.

Ooo the Doctor's here! On the screen. Wibbly Wobbly ExplodyWoddey <- Genuine Quote.

Oh! The Doctor's actually here, love that. He climbed out from the floor. I really love his Doctor.

Oooo Arthur Darvill is here, I love him, love Rory. Lovely Rory.

I love Amy's theme, it's one of my favourites. Its genuinely one of the most beautiful pieces of musics I heard and it feels like the Doctor and Amy's friendship.

Oh we get to see all the Doctor's on the screen! Not me crying. I get tingles every time I see the second doctor, is that weird, he is just my favourite.

Matt Smith's back! Suited up (insert heart eyes) He seems like a very nice man.

They're playing music from The Big Bang and the Pandorica opens now, its very nice, very relaxing. And seeing the montage of the series on the screen is very cool.

And getting to hear theme, eleventh doctor style is brilliant, alongside with all the monsters coming out again!

A full face of makeup using my favourite products 💄💋

When it comes to my personal makeup, I tend to lean towards a clean, glowy look. Usually, my makeup has a retro flair. My makeup style can change from day to day depending on what I'm inspired by. Early 90s grunge is one of the styles I'm attracted to.

I usually start my makeup by applying skincare. I tend to lay on moisturisers and serums to achieve a glossy skin effect. L'Oreal Revitalift serum is one of the products I like using to achieve this.

Brows are usually next. When I first started wearing makeup I would always fill in my brows with a pencil, powder or pomade but now I tend to just use a brow gel Sometimes even just a light powder to fill in any gaps.

M.A.C face & body is literally my favourite foundation, especially on days where I just want to look put together and not overdone . It's lightweight buildableand dries down So you don't leave make up marks on your clothes.

I recently discovered a brand, Uoma beauty. I saw it in Harvey Nichols. My friend from college was the manager . It's a very new brand and one of my favourite things about it is it's also a Black own brand. In the video, you can see that I'm using their Woke concealer in Bronze Venus. The concealer was highly pigmented and had a lovely warm undertone, which warmed up my under eyes. Another black own brand I used was Juvia's place.

For years, I've been trying to get my hands on their products. I was able to get my hands on some of their products last year. They've started selling their cosmetics in Superdrug. Which is great for someone like me he prefers to go into a brick and mortar store to buy makeup. Their Bronzer in the shade medium was the 1st matte bronzer that actually worked on my skin tone. At Superdrug, Juvia's places shade range was way more inclusive than the other drugstore brands. From what I remember, there were at least 2 to 3 more darker shades that could easily be used by POC with darker skin.

To define my face more, I like to highlight the high points of my cheeks and apply a blush over the bronze ear to give a more realistic sunkissed look. I can guarantee that Wet n Wild does the best drugstore highlighter. It's buttery smooth and glides on the skin beautifully.

For my eyes, I use a combination of Haus labs Glam attack in the shade legendary and Juvia's place Rebel army eyeshadow pallet. I'm using the 1st launch of Glam Attack Liquid eye shadows from Lady Gaga's cosmetics line, Haus Labs. Both products are highly pigmented and easy to apply. I love the combination of golden green.

For the final touches, I set my face using a combination of Mabeline's long-lasting fix powder and the long-lasting fix spray. Finally, I applied a lipstick by M.A.C. in the shade, Mher. I also use Rimmle Scandaleyes mascara and a brown lip gloss.

As you can see on the days where I wear makeup, I like to wear a full face. I don't feel complete without all these steps. Even though the eyes were dramatic, I felt like I was able to balance out the look by keeping the skin and the brows natural. For most people, this may be too much for an everyday look, but I love to experiment with colour, and my eye shadow is how I play around with colour. I treat makeup like fashion. There are different trends, aesthetics & sub cultures. Make-up allows you to signal to others your personal style, your mood, and even your culture.

Foam House Examples

Here are some foam house examples. I really like the top two images, they appear to be some sort of broken down French town during WW2. You can see a little German tank in one of the images. I would happily do something like this for my FMP. I love this idea of creating a super detailed WW2 battle scene, or something along those lines.

If I where to redo something myself I would change the matt colours used. I do feel the paint job could have had a lot more time and effort put into it. The colours are too clean and perfect for a war scape. I want to see more dirt, ash and maybe some blood. If you wanted to go the extra mile you could even add some cotton wool with an LED in the centre to look like smoke from a fire. I do like the abandoned car in the top right image. This would be a perfect place to add the cotton wool smoke detail.

The contrast between the bright buildings and grungy war zone might have looked good if the buildings bright colours where just muted down a little. This is my pet peeve with these two foam buildings. This is especially apparent with the top right image. Not to mention they chose light blue as a contrast in an already snowy themed setting saturated with plenty enough blue colour. a better choice would have been literally another colour to add more interest. The red brick showing through does help to aid this issue.

Looooooong, rambling post about Daredevil in She-Hulk’s Ribbit and Rip It under the cut.

Okay while it’s still fresh (though honestly I’m going to watch it again to really absorb into my pooooooores), I really enjoyed the episode and how they used Matt overall. It was nice to see him with a lighter vibe. Like, I doubt it’ll carry on to his series (judging from the hard as fuck promotional poster I saw), but it was still nice to see him smiling, flirting, and generally not being at 300% intensity all the time. I liked Charlie’s accent a lot. There was a rougher edge to it that I found really attractive for Matt. Not sure if it’s a matter of him being a bit out of practice or if he tweaked it a little. idek, it was just a little detail that I noticed.

I’m a little mixed on the action scenes like, look we were all spoiled by the hallway/stairwell/whole gd prison block fights. Like, on one hand they made me realize that we probably won’t ever see that level of brilliant and brutal fight choreography any time soon. Not while Marvel Studios is being such a taskmaster and Disney keeps being cheap, any way. I’m not sure how much of the Daredevil end of the fight was practical and how much was cgi, so I’m not going to criticize on that. Frankly, I generally watch streaming on smaller screens, so i think I miss a lot of those details. It’s like, I know a lot of people say She-Hulk looks like shit because it is so cgi heavy, and I agree, I would have preferred practical effects but corporations like paper more than quality these days so yeah, ofc Disney is going to favour cgi over practical. Capitalists doing a capitalism if you will.

My point is, I’m not going to complain here too much about it because honestly? I’m not even going to pretend that it ruins my enjoyment of the show. Truly absurd. Anyway, this is my incredibly long winded way of saying no, it didn’t blow my hair back the way the Netflix series’ fight scenes did, but frankly, I didn’t hate it. It was nice to see him more moving with more acrobatically, not to mention having his weapon which idek, made me feel a certain way. It’s like I said in the spoiler free post: I like seeing them own his comic legacy instead of just gesturing to it. Again, I love the Neflix series. It’s how I fell in love with the character, but, regardless of how I might feel about the current state of genre saturation (like I don’t want them to stop, I just want them to slow the fuck down, Disney literally owns literally dozens of other franchises. I don’t know why they’re putting all their chips in on Marvel and Star Wars while treating their audience like we’re babies with no object permanence), I have never understood the desperation to separate superhero stories from its often camp and iconic aesthetics. I mean, intellectually i get it. They want to try to catch normies as well as comic book fans and I guess...bright colours and ostentatious character and costume design are so foreign as to frighten off the average movie goer (heavy sarcasm).

(A small, unrelated rant: And it’s so fucking stupid, like sure, someone that doesn’t like comic books or even just someone that doesn’t like action movies is prolly going to be put off by more faithful designs of X-men members, but I promise you putting everyone in leather catsuits wouldn’t have changed their minds. I know most the people making these blockbusters can’t possible imagine they’re going to get the art house crowd by toning down the camp, so it really baffles me why they do it other than perhaps they’re sometimes, somewhat ashamed of the subject matter.)

Uhhh....this has gotten long and rambly. So I’m going to wrap it up. A+ that they finally got Matt laid. Look, idek, it was kind of a joke between me and some friends back when the Netflix Marvel series were a big deal. We thought it was both hilarious and kind of weird that literally everyone was getting a love scene but Matt. While I’m not all on in on his reputation as being promiscuous. Frankly he’s too busy to be that dedicated to strange. Seriously though, if there’s one thing I’ve really enjoyed about She-Hulk is that Jen fucks, and sure it’s not explicit, but it’s sincere and not stigmatized. While I know a lot of people are going to poo-poo that like oh, Iggy you’re just a bit of a perv, though. Maybe so, but my point is that I’m not the only one to notice how odd it is that we have all these pretty people in the MCU and diamond cut bodies that are only used for violence. I guess it’s nice to see writers think about these characters on a more base level. Also you know, the appreciation of how fucking sexy Matt Murdock is (not just talking about Charlie either) was nice. The subversion of the woman’s walk of shame was very clever, too (you know, he was carrying his boots and walking barefoot, presumably back to his hotel room, the way a female character is usually portrayed the morning after carrying her heels). Just a side note, I hate the term “walk of shame” but I don’t feel like being annoying and being like “UMMMM I THINK IT SHOULD BE CALLED A WALK OF TRIUMPH”. It’s whatever. I just don’t like negative language being used surrounding sexuality.

He dislikes the subway.

Other than his other valid reason to have disdain for trains, the subway is dark, it’s shady and he’s sure he’s seen rodents fight to the death here on several occasions.

Still, he’s following you down the stairs of the station, watching as you whistle along to the song blasting through your headphones. There’s a backpack swung over your shoulders, hands stuffed into the pocket of your hoodie and converse doing a skip every now and then. There’s a bandana that’s tied across your face, acting as a mask to hide your identity.

He realises that you’re dressed like a commuter. Were you going to dress the part every single time?

You walk along with the crowd. He follows, a few feet away.

Until you stop. He abruptly stops too, leading someone to walk right into him.

“Watch it, dumbass,” they hiss with the courage of someone who has no idea who he is. He ignores them.

He looks on as you dig around your backpack and pull out a roll of paper. A poster, he realises soon when you peel off a layer from the back and press it to the wall.

Was it legal to put up posters in the subway? He wasn’t quite sure.

He observes as you turn around and continue down the path. He waits a few seconds before trailing up to the poster.

Volunteers needed!

If you’re interested in being turned into a ghost for a couple of hours, this is your chance! Should be okay with being on camera so that we can make money off of taped paranormal sightings.

Paid opportunity. You get to pick your outfit. Randos don’t apply.

He yanks the poster of the wall before continuing down the same place you did.

He finds another poster along the way. He doesn’t hesitate in pulling it down. You were advocating to kill people.

He knows he’s going in the right direction because more posters creep up along the wall.

The both of you are on the platform by now but to him, something changes about the placement of the posters. They were growing in frequency, the distance between them decreasing as they were situated close to each other.

He pauses in front of the next one, hand hovering over the paper.

All it reads is ‘STOP’.

He furrows his eyebrow, pulling it down before peering over at the next one.

‘TAKING’, is all that it says.

It doesn’t take him very long to make his way through all the posters in the hallway.

‘THESE’

‘DOWN’

The train’s arrived by now but a quick scan over the crowd and he knows that you haven’t entered. That, and he knew that you were too dramatic to leave without a trace or a small conversation with him.

‘DICKHEAD’

Tasteful, he thinks.

“It took effort to make them, stop ruining it,” you whine from the end of the hallway. It’s empty, given that rush hour was over a while ago.

Even though the mask covers half your face, it’s obvious that there is mischief etched under it. The twinkle in your eye is telling.

“You’re literally killing people.” He holds up the poster. Not the ‘dickhead’ one. He pockets that for later.

He knows there are a few minutes before the next train arrives and more people flood the station. The eccentricity of today lay in the lighting from the incandescent lamps and acoustics of the platform. It made his voice echo like a movie scene.

“I very much am not,” you huff.

“You’re turning them into ghosts. That’s what a murderer does,” he says pointedly.

“Well, only if you keep saying it like that. You’re making me look bad.” You cross your arms across your chest. “What are you, Fox News?”

A scurry next to him earns his attention. Two rats nibble at a piece of fallen food. He wonders when they’ll starting brawling.

“Explain this.” He waves the poster around. He isn’t taking it too lightly he hopes. If it’s actual murder then it’s going to be an issue.

You pull out a black cylinder, slightly bigger than a pen. He can’t really see any more details, but you hold onto it like a wand.

“I’m turning them into ghosts. I’ll post videos of them doing stupid shit. I get famous and then boom, cash money.” You rub your index finger and thumb together. “I’ll give you a share if you volunteer.”

“You’re not explaining the death part.”

He can feel it. You’re about to start derailing.

“Winter Soldier, the ghost story. Literally.” You grin, yanking down the mask from your face to prove it. It pools around your neck. “That’s so funny, c’mon, it’d be amazing.”

It’s been years since he’s heard that. Never in this context.

“No,” he says sternly, “and I’m going to have to bring you in if you’re going to kill people.”

The rats were ignoring everything that was going down like the hardened criminals that they were. They had probably seen worse. He can’t stop paying attention to them.

“I’m not killing them, bro.” You raise your hands in exclamation. “I’m just moving some molecules around, some frequency shit. They’re alive, just ghosts.”

He’s always been one for science. Straight As throughout high school, attended science conventions as a hobby, alive even at 100 through some mad experimentation, definitely seen some weird shit during his lifetime.

But this doesn’t make sense.

“No,” he repeats. “Give me the thing.”

“Fine, I’ll show you.” You roll your eyes. “Since you have absolutely no faith in me.”

He does a quick review of his surroundings.

No one’s around, which is good.

But that just leaves him in front of you, which is bad.

“Don’t you even thin-” he starts, muscles tensing as he shifts into a defensive stance.

You whip out the little pen thing from beside you but before he can react you turn around and duck.

The click of a button releases a bright light, small but intensely stronger than the fluorescents in the station.

He reels back, feet carrying him away from where you’re crouched. His eyes quickly look down at his body.

Nothing’s changed.

He lifts his hand to check, runs it over his face. Still alive. He thinks.

“Behold,” you declare, “Ghost rat.”

He looks to where you’re pointing. The two rats from earlier were still nibbling on their food but something was off about them.

He could see the faint outline of the tiles on the wall behind them, almost like they were... translucent.

You aimed at the rats, not him. He doesn’t know whether to feel relieved or annoyed at the fake threat.

He watches as they move. They don’t look hurt or injured.

“Cool, huh?” you say smugly.

He can’t stop staring at them.

“Bring them back.”

“They’re fine, look how abstract it is.”

“Bring back the rats.” He can’t believe this is what his life has come to.

Bucky Barnes, Rodent Protector.

You aren’t fazed by his indifference, instead wonder filled eyes gaze at the animals. “Astral mice, sarge. Embrace the miracle of modern science.”

“You killed them.”

“They’re alive, they’re just ghosts.” You raise a finger to point. “Look, they’re still eating. Biological functions are still taking place.”

Which was true. But still. He doesn’t know what is going on.

“Bring them back to... non-ghost alive.”

“You sure you don’t want one? That one kinda looks like you.” One hardened glare after you realise the answer. “Jeez, alright then.”

You dig through your bag before pulling out a matte black replica of your current invention.

“Sexy colours, right?” You hold them up. “I modelled them after your arm.”

He looks down. Sure enough the gold and black matched his cybernetic limb. It was oddly flattering.

“Say thank you, Y/N, for letting me be your muse-”

“Un-ghost the rats.”

“Ungrateful,” you narrow your eyes at him.

Still, you comply with his demands, ducking down to their level again.

A click of the button, a bright light and the rats are back to normal. Non-transparent normal.

“Okay, give me that.” He takes a step towards you.

“Nuh uh.” You pull your arm back. His mouth twitches at your response; what are you, five?

The black one is stuffed back into your bag but you wave around the gold like a threat.

He sighs, making a pass for it. In a second his arm is twisted and shoved against his back, forcing him to spin so that he’s facing away from you. His eyes widen.

What the fuck?

“Now we’re having a good time,” you whisper into this ear.

He swiftly turns around, grabbing your wrist to rotate his own out of your grip.

“Since when can you fight?” he asks.

“Are we getting to know each other now?” You raise your leg to give him a semi gentle kick in the side, using his momentary distraction in blocking it to give him a knock on the head with your free hand. “This is so romantic, sarge.”

There’s a low rumble in the distance and he knows the train would soon start pulling into the station. It was still a distance away, but his heightened senses warned him that it wouldn’t take much time.

He groans. How much longer would he have to go at this?

He could easily win this fight and he knew it. But something in him itched, pulled him back from doing it.

He blocks another attempt at his head. “Stop that.”

You grin. “You know what’d be fun?”

He knows you’d reply even if he didn’t encourage it. The lights from the train light up the tunnel around the corner.

“This.” You don’t give him a second to recover before you flick your wrist away from him.

The device flies out of your hand and right onto the track. The both of you watch, you in glee, he in horror, as the train runs right over it, unleashing the brightest light he had ever seen. His eyes shut instinctively before it blinds him.

He forces himself to pry open his eyelids, look at the damage caused.

The train, sure enough, is translucent. He can see the posters on the other side of the platform through the carriage, through various people holding onto the poles for support or seated on the seats.

“Ghost train!” you cheer. He’s mortified.

“Fuck no,” he mumbles, yanking the backpack off your shoulder. He rummages through it, looking for the gold version.

“You lookin’ for this?” you ask nonchalantly, holding it up in your hand like it isn’t the solution to stopping a bunch of ghosts from wandering around New York.

“Turn them back.” He gives you a chance.

“Do it yourself, coward.” You grin, holding it above your head. The train is going to stop and he needs everyone to be alive and non-ghost before they leave.

He doesn’t wait this time, instead turning to you. The thing is still held in your grip above your head. He rolls his eyes, doing a quick assessment before grabbing your free hand, tugging you closer and plucking the device out of your hand before you have the opportunity to retract it.

“Great, now figure out which button to press.” You’re dangerously close to him. He can feel your hoodie brush against his tactical jacket. “Also if you wanted to be all pressed up against me, you could have just asked.”

He furrows his eyebrows, letting go of you as you give a loud laugh. He looks down at the device. It has several buttons, littering up and down the side. Each look the same.

The train’s slowing down.

“They’re both the same device; this version is not a magical solution to the other one. If you press the wrong button then both of us are going to be fucked.”

The last carriage is getting closer.

“Say I win this round and I’ll fix it.”

There’s a gleam in your eye. He knew this was exactly what you wanted.

He wishes he was as stubborn as Steve, just run through each button until the right one worked.

“You win this one.” He hands it back. He wasn’t like Steve and judging by the number of items the idiot jumped out of planes without a parachute on a daily basis, Bucky was glad about it. At least Bucky did it sporadically.

“Yay, two each for the both of us, then,” you say, taking it from him and twisting, eyes running down the sides. “Close your eyes, old man, or else your cataract’s gonna get worse.”

Right as the train pulls to a stop, you press down on the button before throwing it and the blinding light that emanates from it. It lands on the top of the train right as the doors open.

The passengers start stepping out. Some of them are looking at their hands and legs in a little disbelief, most just push through the crowd to leave.

He can’t see through them. It’s a good sign.

He turns to look at you but you’re not there. Instead, the weight of the small device weighs down in his pocket.

The sound of a thud on glass draws his attention.

He looks up at the train. The window of the carriage in front of him has a bit of fog on it. You trace a heart in the condensation and blow him a kiss before pulling your mask back on.

The train starts moving, leaving him alone in the platform again with your invention.

He lets out an exhale, wandering outside to grab a sandwich before waiting to catch the next train to go home.

Later in the evening, he catches hold of a bit of tape and the ‘Dickhead’ poster finds a place on Sam’s door.

He doesn’t appreciate it.

So now it’s tucked away in the shelf of Bucky’s bedside table along with a freeze ray, a ghost-inator, and some discount Pym Particles.

Thunderstorm

Headcanon: L introduces Y/N as his s/o to the Wammy's kids.

𝓜𝓲𝓱𝓪𝓮𝓵 𝓚𝓮𝓮𝓱𝓵 | 𝓜𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸

When L introduced you to Mello, Near and Matt, you were so happy. L kept talking about them constantly and you couldn’t wait to meet them.

At first Mello didn’t trust you. At all. He always made fun of you, he stayed away from you as best as he could and avoided you all the time. It was clear he hated you but not because you were L's s/o but because…he was afraid. Of you? No, to grow attached to you and then seeing you leaving.

But, eventually, one night something changed: outside the Wammy's House there was a storm with strong wind and cold rain that hit violently the windows; you were still up since you had some work to do, sipping quietly your F/D on a couch with a warm blanket on your legs. You were almost done when you heard a noise: was…someone walking around the orphanage past bedtime? You left all your things on the table and went towards the door to look in the corridor.

Once you opened the door you found a scared tiny Mello in front of you. He was shaking slightly despite he was trying to appear strong in front of you.

«Mello, what's up? Something the matter?» you kneeled down in front of him, clearly worried. Was he scared of the storm?

The answer at that question arrived almost immediately when, after a loud thunder, you saw Mello jump in fear. Without hesitation, he hugged you, grabbing tightly your clothes with his tiny, shaking hands and crying against your chest.

You immediately hugged him back, taking him in your arms and together you walked back in the couch where you were working. You took the blanket and wrapped Mello in it; in the meantime, he never let go his grasp on your clothes.

He was still shaking inside the blanket so you decided to hum one of your favourite song while caressing the hand that was grabbing tightly your shirt. He seemed to like the song and you could feel him slowly falling asleep, ignoring completely the storm outside the orphanage.

Before he fell asleep, you heard him say «Don’t leave» in a whisper.

The next morning Mello expected to wake up in his room after that embarrassing moment with you. When he opened his eyes he gasped quietly seeing he was still on the couch with you. You didn’t leave, you stayed with him for the entire night, taking care of him during the thunderstorm. In that moment he realised that maybe he could give you a chance. Maybe.

𝓜𝓪𝓲𝓵 𝓙𝓮𝓮𝓿𝓪𝓼 | 𝓜𝓪𝓽𝓽

The first day, contrary to Mello, little Matt loved you immediately.

He saw you playing with the other children at the orphanage and they seemed to like your presence (and how childish you could be sometimes).

So he wanted to give it a try and befriended you.

Best decision ever: you could play many different games and your sense of humour matched Matt's one.

Moreover, you were a good storyteller too: you knew so many things and he could listen to you for hours.

The day after the thunderstorm, while Mello seemed to have something else in his mind, Matt realised with horror that he failed the last geometry test: 35% / 100 (A/N: "F" in the US grades).

So that morning you didn’t see Matt around. You searched for him for entire hours before leading towards him room. «Matt, dear, are you in there? You skipped lunch, is everything ok?» you asked while knocking at his door.

You were going to knock again but the door opened abruptly in front of you: and there was Matt, head down looking at the floor, a sheet of paper in one hand and the door knob in the other. He had his goggles on too.

You kneeled down and he handled you the sheet of paper. After a closer look at it and you found out the reason of his distress: a bad grade in his geometry test. «Oh Matt, come here» and you hugged him.

He hugged you back, unloading all his anguish. Despite he was the third smartest child of the orphanage, he cared about his grades and that test was very important for him. You comforted him, whispering soft encouragement in his ears. «There's always a solution, Matt. Let's find it out together, alright?» you proposed to help him with his homework and when he took the geometry test again, he scored one of the best grades.

«I'm so proud of you, Matt» you told him, messing up his brown hair. In that moment, from afar, you could hear someone sneeze.

𝓝𝓪𝓽𝓮 𝓡𝓲𝓿𝓮𝓻 | 𝓝𝓮𝓪𝓻

Your introduction didn’t make any difference in his routine, actually. He was happy for L thou: finding a s/o that could bear his peculiar lifestyle was very difficult. Hence, when L introduced you to his three favourite children, Near was happy but not impressed about you.

Unlike Matt or Mello, Near didn’t play with the other children and he didn’t expect you to play with him: he saw you playing with Matt and Mello and he realised you weren't a jigsaw lover like him. But again, he didn’t care that much.

One sunny morning, however, you walked closer to him clearly hiding something behind your back. Near, being a cute, little curious kid, wanted to know what you were hiding.

«This is for you, Near» and you gave him a wooden carved squirrel you made with your own hands. The little boy was looking at it in awe, taking the toy in his small hands.

The smell of fresh wood, the smooth surface, the colour: everything about that toy was perfect, Near loved it.

You smiled at his reaction, caressing slightly his hair. You didn’t want to violate his own privacy and comfort zone.

Those gestures –the toy and the soft touch- warmed his little heart a bit.

That same evening, he went to bed with his new toy, a rare happy smile adorned his face. However, during the night, he couldn’t sleep that much because his bed was cold: as a joke, other children removed all his blankets and now he was sleeping with just few bed sheets.

The result was that the following day he caught a cold but he told nobody. However, when you saw him literally collapsing on a dice tower he was creating –due to the really high temperature- you realised something was wrong.

You took him in your arms rushing towards the infirmary: you put him to bed making sure he was warm enough, you helped the nurses with the medicines and with everything Near needed to recover.

It was late night when Near, finally, woke up and you were next to him in the infirmary. «Near, how are you? Why didn’t you tell me you caught a cold?» you asked him while fixing the bed sheets and the pillow.

He watched carefully how focused you were while taking care of him, everything –from your body language to your facial expressions- suggested him you were really worried about him.

You were going to let him rest while you felt something blocking you; when you turned to look at him you saw his tiny hand grasping the edge of your shirt.

«Please…stay» he whispered faintly, the sore throat made every word twice painful. You smiled and took a seat next to him, caressing his hair tenderly and telling him your childhood stories with a soft voice. Unaware of you, he was holding the toy you gave him under the covers.

Now you changed drastically his routine. And Near loved it.

this world was cruel, that much was clear.

one couple in a thousand are fated to be apart, the thought didn’t scare you much since people in love always find a way, right?

when you touch your soulmates hands for the first time you feel a little spark, like electricity but for 1 couple out of 1000 they’d get thrown apart, quite literally thrown apart. they’d repel like the opposite ends of a magnet.

reading people’s experience on the matter broke your heart, people fated to be together only for their wishes to become nothing but that, wishes.

the same happened to your aunt and uncle, they’re together but apart, not allowed to touch eachother without being repelled apart. you watched it firsthand and it hurt seeing them live so happily apart in this unfair world.

your other uncle was no other then pro-hero all might, he raised you from the age of 3, your parents died when you were young, in a villain attack. they died fighting and their last wish was for you, their daughter to grow up a happy child in the care of your fathers brother, all might.

your uncle is an amazing guardian, he was nervous but he taught you everything he knows, your wish is to be a pro-hero exactly like him, exactly like your parents and that’s what he wanted for you as well even if there were dangers who was he to say no to your dream?

he trained you carefully, your quirk was powerful and sometimes hard to manage when not in control of your emotions, your quirk is telekinesis, you can lift yourself into the air with enough power and your hands stabilise the quirk, your nose bleeds when you start overusing it and you get lightheaded but with the help of all might you slowly got better at handling the power.

‘y/n you’re up next’ you walked up to where your class teacher aizawa was standing, steadying your feet a little you flicked the ball into the air only above your hand and then using your mind and hand you shot it up into the sky, everyone watched in amazement as you got the best score by barely trying. your eyes locked with a blondes, his eyes stood out, they glistened gold and crimson in the sun dancing in the light hitting his face but you looked away feeling your face heat up at his looks. ‘hey y/n right? you did amazing out there my names mina ashido!’ you smiled at her friendliness, ‘hi, you did pretty great too’.

as the months went on you caught yourself staring more and more at a certain blonde, sometimes you caught him staring back. it was no secret that you’re attractive anyone with eyes could see that, someone had recorded you trying to regain your breath during the sports festival and it went viral. when you caught him staring at you from across the table, you simply smirked at him before going back to talking to denki and mina.

at first you thought your attraction to him was only because of his looks, until you started getting to know the boy underneath. he’s caring, he’s thoughtful, he would never say it but he is. you noticed when he would do things for others, when you all moved into the dorms after the USJ attack you started to notice his small gestures to show he cares, they may not be big but you noticed.

in his eyes you are incredible, he often thought about your strength, physically and mentally. everyone thinks that you’re lucky because you got to learn from all might but they never thought about the circumstances in which you got there, your parents died but you still fought on. at first you were closed off, until you became friends with mina who introduced you to the bakusquad, you all clicked immediately. your sarcastic humour paired with their loud and bakugous equally sarcastic humour fit like a puzzle.

‘hey idiot, come here’, it was 8pm and the dekusquad had sneaked out to watch the sunset along the beach. you hopped down from the railing and traced it with the tip of your fingers before reaching him, ‘what is it blasty’, you looked at him, the crimson sky faded along with pink, the sun only illuminating the colour onto his face making him look beautiful he looks pretty , she looks pretty. if only you could hear eachothers thoughts.

‘look at them’ you looked down from the perch to see denki kicking water at kirishima and sero as mina threw wet sand balls at them both, you giggled at the sight, even her laugh is pretty he thought.

‘hey love birds!! get down here!’ the pink haired girl yelled.

‘SHUT UP PINKIE’ neither of you denied it, maybe because that’s what you wanted.

you all sneaked back into the dorms when it got dark, you clicked your phone ‘12am’ you whispered to your friends, thankfully no one snitched on you. the wooden floors creaked a little as you made your way to your room, you grabbed your towel and slipped off your clothes before slipping into the shower, once you got out you threw on a large hoodie which almost went down to your knees. ‘y/nn bakugou is being annoying can you help’ denki pouted making grabby hands at you. after agreeing you skipped downstairs to see the boy nagging over the dishes, smiling a little you walked over to him.

you started cleaning up the dishes he was nagging about as he made you all food since you were all hungry from the beach. ‘thanks’ you grinned hearing those words leave his mouth, even if they were quiet ‘what was that blasty?’ he glared at you ‘i will deck you’ you stifled a laugh at his words as your eyes connecting with his crimson ones for a second, both of your eyes widened looking into the others before you quickly went back to the task at hand.

he just has pretty eyes.. that’s it fuck, no i don’t like her, fuck.

falling in love with katsuki bakugou was not in your plans, but the way the blonde haired boy fussed about cleaning and things that you’d think he’d give no care to struck you. the way he’d pick a stray fluff or hair off kirishimas clothes but not tell him, the way he’d use his anger to mask him affection. it all endeared you, but why?

maybe it was the night you went to the beach, when he looked down at your friends messing around like it’d be the last time he’s seeing them, or the way he looked at you when you sneezed with a grin on his face,

‘why are you smiling at that’

‘you sounded like a fuckin cat’,

was it because of his eyes, his stupid pretty crimson eyes telling you to come closer, telling you to kiss him. — or the night he looked after you when you got drunk in the dorms, you had drunk a little too much and felt yourself feeling sick, before you knew it you’d ran upstairs to your bathroom and started vomiting into the toilet, he followed you and lifted your hair out of your face, ‘idiot take these’ he handed you some medicine for the pain in your head. — and he stayed with you that night so you wouldn’t be sick by yourself.

it’s been almost two years since you caught feelings for him. two years since you fell dangerously in love with the angry blonde boy.

today you were attacked by the league of villains while training and everything was okay, you were fighting alongside him, while you were fighting back to back you hadn’t noticed the villain to the side of you, he was aiming for bakugou, you did what you could in the moment and took the hit for him. you didn’t know what the persons quirk did but it didn’t seem to affect to you at all. ‘IDIOT GRAB MY HAND’ you quickly shook your head to get rid of the dizzy feeling taking place and grabbed his hand.

as soon as you defeated everyone you gathered near the front of the facility and that’s when you felt it. feelings from your past, the pain of having zero to very little memories of your parents, the pain of everyone but you knowing them, most of all the anger. you screamed crouching to the ground throwing your hands over your ears trying to get rid of the emotions they were overwhelming and painful. bakugou told aizawa that you got hit with a quirk but it didn’t do anything, he ran over as soon as he heard you scream.

‘y/n!, can you hear me.. fuck what’s happening’ you squeezed your eyes shut yelling out again as the stabbing feeling covered your body like needles, aizawa tried erasing the quirk but it was no use.

you gasped for air as the pain finally stopped and opened your eyes, ‘FUCK YOU SCARED ME SO FUCKING MUCH’ you smiled weakly as you realised he’s cradling you, — your eyes change colour when you see your soulmate in their most vulnerable state — ‘wait what is-’ you looked up at his words to see his crimson eyes replaced by your [c] ones, your own eyes now crimson, in only 5 seconds his eyes turned back to crimson as yours turned back to [c].

‘bakugou’ you were afraid to look at his expression, he tilted your head up and he smiled at you ‘i’m glad it’s you, i’m so fuckin glad it’s you’ you beamed at him as tears welled up in the base of your eyes.

that night you were planning on going on a date together, just you and him. mina and denki were sat on your bed crying and screaming about what happened, ‘ugh the way you looked at eachother makes me want a relationship!!’ she sobbed as her lips formed a pout, you laughed at her antics as denki did your eyeliner for you. ‘is this okay?’ you went for very ‘you’ clothes and you were pretty satisifed with your outfit, smiling you turned to them. ‘now this isn’t fair how do you look good in everything’ you scoffed before booping the pink girl.

you had butterflies in your stomach before even meeting him, the way he made you feel nervous but ecstatic. ‘hey’ you turned at the voice, smiling when you noticed you accidentally matched, you wore a black jumper with a skull on it as he wore his black skull t-shirt. you both noticed this and smiled.

‘gonna keep staring at me dumbass, come on?’

you walked after him smiling at his eagerness, ‘where are we going blasty’ he quickly looked up at the stars before saying ‘to see some memories’. after 10 minutes of walking you noticed the beach, it was the same one you came to with your friends, the one where you watched the sunset together, when you were oblivious to the others feelings. you talked and laughed about how oblivious you both were,

‘i kinda knew it was you, i think, i don’t know it’s fuckin weird.. i saw you and i just, knew?’

your heart did backflips at his words, ‘when i first saw you, at the first day of UA, you caught my eye maybe it was the pretty red eyes or the angry face-’

‘I DONT HAVE AN ANGRY FACE’ even his anger made you fall for him.

you’re down bad, you both are.

after your walk along the beach you talked more and walked until you realise it had been hours and you should be getting back to the dorms, somehow this entire time you hadn’t touched hands, it’s not that you didn’t want to you were just so immersed in talking to him it felt like you could talk to him forever.

as you got back to the dorms you stood outside the door and edged closer to him, his eyes sparkled just like they did that day, he entwined his hands with yours.

but instead of feeling the spark you felt a jolt, like a pain and you both pushed apart like magnets.

‘wait.. What, no this isn’t happening i held you this morning, what fucking changed’ he looked at you hurt and in shock, you couldnt breath, it was happening, the one you love but never be able to touch.

‘y/n, don’t fucking cry i’m here, i’m still here’.

‘but you’re not, it’s like we have an invisible box around each other you’ll never be able to hold me, or kiss me’ it was like you couldn’t feel anything but you felt everything at the same time.

‘there’s gotta be a reason, i held you fucking hours ago y/n, maybe it’s that fuckers quirk’

‘bakugou this is what happened to my aunt and uncle, they were fine for the first couple hours until i-it happened’

‘you deserve someone you can hold’

‘but i want you, you’re my fucking soulmate don’t be stupid’

‘you cant even fucking touch me bakugou’

‘call me blasty again.’

‘what?’

‘please’

his eyes were filling with tears, threatening to spill.

‘bakugou, i’m sorry, i love you’

‘then we’ll make this work’

Mostly wears office attire and generic clean cut clothing. There’s nothing wrong with a nice suit or shirt over t-shirt combo, it just lacks imagination. Sticks to the same basic clothing choices. Loved his stow away outfit when he went to kill Raye. Hate his turtle neck. Gays, turtle necks don't look good stop trying to bring them back. Light tried and now he’s dead. Think about that. 6/10

L Lawliet

He’s not winning any fashion awards but Goddamn does he look comfy as fuck. Basic as hell but those jeans are probably lined with the finest silk ever made and retail for $4,000 which drives Light mad because they look terrible but God he’d love to own something like that. Desperately needs shoes so I can stop looking at his little piggies. 4/10 ya basic

Misa Amane

Takes risks with her clothing and I love it. The original goth GF and the reason things awakened in a lot of us. I wanted to dip into lolita fashion purely because of Misa. One of the few characters to wear a wig to change her look and still look cute. Even her dressed down clothes look pretty cute and hint to her personality. She dresses for herself and I adore it. 11/10

Near:

Yawn. Would stain this constantly. Uninspired. Go back to bed Near. One point for comfy factor. 1/10

Mello

Too much leather for my taste pre-explosion. Post explosion Mello ups his game and begins using jackets to his advantage. The feathers, the colours, pure elegance, the necklaces and nail polish! Also dresses as a delivery man which is probably the funniest fucking thing in Death Note. 10/10

Matt

No. Stop it. -1/10

Task Force

More men in suits, which I understand but damn maybe it shake it up a little. Everyone here is a clown why is no one dressed like it? 2/10 You have a literal goth lolita on your team and don’t step it up? Disgusting

I need more flexibility to make lists (than Ao3 allows) because I'm fussy and pedantic. I have waaay too many tabs open on my browser as I try not to miss out/lose some of these great writers and artists. Here is my attempt at saving them into a list that I wont lose. Mostly Tony-centric, commonly fluff, smut or hurt/comfort.

Wix writes a lot of salty Team Iron Man Fics Changing Fate is a time-travel WinterIron fix-it, Coming Unstrung which has TeamCap kidnapping Tony to try to sort things out (and inspired Revenge Fantasy by alioftwoworlds) Potrix Writes plenty of WinterIron and Tony/Bucky/Steve, among other things. Fluff and comfort abound. Their bookmarks are also pretty great for discovering a variety of other Marvel fics. Sineala writes universes from the comics. Features Cap/IronMan, and fics where Iron Man's identity is a secret. Think of This as Solving Problems (That Should Never Have Occurred) - "No one knows Tony is Iron Man. Then Tony gets amnesia, and literally no one knows Tony is Iron Man." Mercy in You, has Steve looking after Tony after an (offscreen) D/s scene gone wrong. A Question of Trust where Steven helps Tony after some self-bondage gone wrong. This Mortal Part of Mine has Iron Man taken advantage of by a tentacle monster. Cap tries to save him and they both escape, but then Cap is having Thoughts. Shaenie writes perfect BDSM fics Don't Look too Closely (all the angles are oblique) is the Cap/Ironman BDSM series, that has also been podficced amazingly by paraka. The series is unfinished but hella long and awesome anyway. it's kingdom time for real!!! the first episode is here and mnet finally uploaded the stages from like a month ago so i can actually watch them more than once to review.

happy to see them all actually performing. not the most interesting stages overall, but it was the 100sec one-take so i wasn’t expecting anything crazy. like the performance stages, this is about what i expected at this point in the show.

ranking under the cut, i have Opinions(tm) and they are not all pretty.

(anyone that’s seeing this for the first time, i’m a trained performance designer with over 30 credits and a decade of experience, yes i can talk about this with authority)

a few general notes:

this type of stage that mnet has built is called a traverse, or alley, stage. named exactly for the reason you think. it’s characterized by a narrow playing space with audience on opposite sides, and two entrances on either end. so mnet had a pretty typical setup. there are some advantages to this type of stage:

because of the narrow stage space and usually smaller audience capacity, the performer and audience are in much closer proximity

because of the shape of the space, blocking (choreography but for not-dance) can travel well and be very dynamic

it’s uncommon outside of midsize/small productions so there’s some novelty for the casual theatre goer

however! there are some pitfalls with this type of stage. the hardest type of stage to work with is (theatre) in the round. theatre in the round is characterized by being....in the round. that means the audience is placed 360 degrees around the playing space. which means that they can see everything; every entrance, every exit, every performer’s back, 360 degree sightlines means there is nowhere to hide. and in a medium that relies on concealment to create magic, it’s a tough stage to work with. not saying it doesn’t work. some of the most incredible shows i’ve been to have been theatre in the round, but when you go to those type of shows, as an audience member you understand that there will be some scenes where you only see the actors’ backs. there is no perfect seat in the round. the reverse is true as well, the actors can only act to those in front of them. and like i stated previously, on the production end it becomes difficult to hide things like props/set/costume changes that you might have been able to in another type of theatre. why am i talking about theatre in the round? because traverse works on exactly the same principle. even though the audience is only on two sides, the same issues still arise. directionality is key: a director has to be careful of how exactly the stage gets blocked.

why am i talking about stage formats? because the space always informs the performance, that’s why. i think mnet made a sort of smart choice to build a traverse stage. since the ‘audience’ is a video camera, that eliminates the need to play to the opposing seating banks, and opens up more staging opportunities. it’s a fancy looking stage that does what they need it to.

now here’s my gripes. if you’re going to specifically orient a stage so that it is by nature directional, why are you broadcasting in a format where direction doesn’t matter? if the camera has no fixed position, then you’ve just skipped directly into in the round staging without taking into account the function of the space. it's a round peg in a square hole; yes it fits, but you can see the spaces where it doesn’t quite match up. for a very obvious example, any shot that is not staring directly down the barrel of the stage from left or right has audience in it. and not enough to be worthy of a reaction shots (because those are just cut in in post), but enough to just be there. why would you do that when you could just.....not? just go properly in the round and then you wouldn’t have that distraction. especially when the audience is wearing white. also, there are only so many ways you can stage on a traverse, you’re pretty much limited to directional points on a compass, because there are literal risers in the way. because of the way most groups are choreographed, the member layouts lean more towards having the members in a line than they do layering the members deep. this configuration is fine on a proscenium stage (which is what most stages are), and would even be fine on a traverse stage if you were playing to the risers. you could even do some interesting choreo alterations. but! because mnet has decided that the camera is perpendicular to the risers, that means that most of the formations are not optimized for the stage dimensions and are in fact the opposite dimensions. most of these groups are doing their longest blocking across the shortest area of stage, which is dumb. although it isn't much of a problem because the stage is still very large, but it's still a bizarre choice on behalf of mnet. why would you not arrange the stage so you have more clearance for the camera, the audience, and also the performers? i would have to check back over the rtk performances, but im pretty sure at one point they switch to an in the round stage. why are you not doing that from the start? this would also allow for more built setpieces. although it does remain to be seen if they do switch after this episode, since this particular challenge was a one-take with minimal props/set pieces. which segues to my next point: these groups barely took up the parameters of the challenge, or utilized them effectively! this is also mnet’s fault, mnet if you say that you’re gonna do a one-take, don't cut between seven other cameras!! show us the power of that single point of view! let the groups actually do some interesting blocking with the path of the camera! there’s so many interesting things they could have done, but no!! had to be boring!! i know this is technically an introductory stage, but i also don't care. these groups have (relatively) competent ADs and stylists, they can think outside the box.

ok now here’s my actual rankings:

1. btob

sorry babies, none of you can match them vocally. love you ateez but you sure fucked up picking them to go after you because they blew you out of the fucking water. and everyone else, but ateez cumulatively is the weakest vocally. more on that later. like the performance stage they showcased their strengths and the experience (and training) shows. good use of the directional stage having three vs one that came together in the middle. loved the white suit variations, im especially a sucker for a belted suit jacket. loved peniel's gigantic trench and massive earrings, very mid 90s, his stylist definitely took a lesson in how to accessorize very short hair. always love good use of fog. uniform colour theme, all elements were there to support the vocals. no complaints, chef’s kiss.

2. ikon

hey baby groups? see bobby having fun? do that more. i know you think performance face is sexy and serious but none of you know how to act and you all look dead inside on stage. the lights may be on but nobody’s home. anyways. excellent beginning formation, excellent ending formation, no complicated position changes that make the camera give you motion sickness. fun choreo that they are obviously having fun performing, which goes sooooo far in the success of a performance. only group so far to use silence as an effective device, and the arrangement was interesting and suited to the song+performance. i think it was smart of them not to deploy bobby right away, although it would have been funny to watch after whatever it was that stray kids was trying to do. again, like btob and also sf9, sticking to their strengths. costumes fun and fitting, indicative of both the colour of the group and of the song. nice detail in the monochrome and the black accent details.

3. sf9

taeyang is that bitch and they only way this would have been better is if he had actually grabbed the ties of those two other members (if you think i am going to remember anyone's names other than the people i already know you are wrong). love the confidence to waste a good chunk of your 90 seconds for walking and standing in formation. actual good use of one-take directional camera, even though they ruined it once they started dancing. choreo perfectly fine, lighting good complementary colour scheme, costumes nothing to write home about, surprisingly good projection design? wasn’t expecting that. im not the biggest fan white suit jackets over black shirts but ill give it a pass for the proper suit accessorizing.

4. ateez

i applaud your dedication to the pirate gimmick but boys you don't need that anymore, i promise. hongjoong's lil bloody cough was a fun gag that didn't draw too much attention but fit with the theme. came out of the gate strong with an actual clear narrative, which can be a challenge to do in 100 seconds, and the only group to have a narrative. also actual camera choreo! that was interesting! mnet stop fucking cutting to overhead shots! apparently im destined to always be beefing with the ateez stylists because what was the point of all that? very little variation in texture or pattern on matte all black just made any relevant details disappear. torch gimmick and end formation fun, and the arrangement had an obvious climax. weird and kinda fun projection design, but not helped by concert-style stage lighting. pick one or the other lighting designer, don't make them fight like that! props to them for actually having their mics on the whole time, even though they are probably the weakest group vocally. im also going to be beefing with the choreographer because they are always making seonghwa sing while doing ridiculous moves that make him go offkey. ateez has some of the stronger 4th gen vocals, but they're at a disadvantage because a) none of them have proper vocal training, and b) their main vocal is not actually a skilled singer and is destroying his voice.not a lot of vocals for them to showcase this stage and that was probably for the best. hanya (@changdyke) is in charge of vocals critique and will have more to say about this than me, even though i am also trained. im just here to talk about the production.

5. the boyz

im neutral to positive on tbz because i did really like their danger stage from rtk. this performance is just....fine. I don’t like the arrangement, but that's mostly personal opinion. but it doesn't have a conclusive end and the whole dissonance thing isn't really working for me in this instance. the choreo is quite flippy and tricking is not necessary for an interesting choreo. i did like the throwback/use of modern choreo, i think that's a strong choice for them and it's not something that many other groups are doing, so they should stick more to that than to tricking. the camera choreo is also not good. here’s where the clearance issues and fighting against the stage layout happen! stop making a handheld do a 180! are you trying to make us motion sick? to be fair, this is not the most egregious one, but at least ateez got it right by having a person lead the camera in a particular pattern. also, what even is the theme here? leatherclad boys in the forest? nobody give me any shit saying it's based off one of their music videos or whatever, that shouldn't matter. there should be a clear theme that can be easily identified without prior knowledge of the group, especially when this is an introductory stage and they are a relatively young group. none of the other groups have this issue. that being said, at least the costumes were interesting to look at, although thematically confusing. good use of accessories, texture, and bedazzling to make the black stand out against the stage. the hands in front of the camera were kind of fun but didnt really mean anything? again, back to the lack of clear concept. i did like them reaching out to pull that member forward, it would have been better if they had just left it at that.

6. stray kids

the more i watch this the more i hate it. im not even sorry about it anymore. starters, and i will admit this upfront: i do not like most 4th gen music, so the spiderman meme groups are already operating on a deficit in my point of view. and i particularly did not like this arrangement. same as with tbz, why did it not have a conclusive end? also overuse of sound effects. and stop saying your fucking band name! the only musician that’s allowed to do that is jason derulo and thats because hes a meme now. but twice in 100 seconds? no. and what was the point of that logo/crown reveal? im tired of crown reveals we have seen them so many times by now, we don't need to see it again. was it meant to be that they were carving it into the ground?? very unclear. there was an attempt with camera choreo, and i will admit that the pan up and then back down to the ‘wolf pack’ was probably the strongest moment in the whole performance. the lights were in their mouths, by the way. however, the rest of the choreo is all over the map, quite literally. as with tbz there’s a lot of members in the group and so in order for everyone to get their screen time they break down into smaller groups, which i don't disagree with on principle, but here.........the breakdowns are just tricking, which although eyecatching, does not a very compelling or cohesive choreo make. even the unison choreo is weird, obviously its stylized horror but it just looks awkward and strange. you can make awkward/unattractive choreo work (see taemin’s want, or even move, to some extent)***, but skz doesn't have an ounce of the charisma that taemin has so it just looks awkward. also, that rapid switch between opposite sides of the stage? nausea inducing. ateez was the one with the pirate concept but skz apparently trying to make us seasick. im not gonna say anything about that rap other than it was bad, why was that allowed on stage. the sparkthrower was fun but that's like the 14th gimmick in this 100 second stage and that’s too many gimmicks. costumes are truly nothing to write home about, extremely unclear relation to the theme. if you're gonna be wolves then at least have some fur accents or something. the makeup effects were a bit over the top and not necessary in the actual performance. a hairdresser needs to thin out felix’s hair because he looks like he's wearing one of those lego hair helmets. oh, i did like that one guy’s shirt with the collarbone cutout, but again: how is that relevant to the theme? cmon people!!!! design the whole experience!! im sure there’s more i could write but holy shit this is long and im tired and also i don't want to watch this stage anymore.

ok im done. jesus this is long. again, this is just the intro stage so i suspect that some of my complaints will become null next week, but we’ll have to see! well, what i actually want to see is changmin insulting children but i’m not holding out hope for that to happen. hopefully we see some more spectacle-y stages and i can really go in.

***this is not me saying that taemin has a bad choreo that he’s making the best of. want is purposefully choreographed that way in order to showcase taemin’s ability. same with move. the point of want is that it IS awkward and should not be seductive or appealing and yet it still is. almost like....it’s in the name of the song or something.....
