Walk in The Gardens

Summary: Odin arranged you to marry Loki, and you're ready to just get it over with. But what if there was something real between you two? Warnings: fem! reader, not proofread bc im tired, let me know if i missed any! Notes: this request is so cutesy i love it!

You didn't know what to expect when Odin chose you as his son's wife. You were taken to the palace by some royal guards where Frigga met you once you arrived. She was very welcoming and helped prepare you to meet your soon-to-be husband. She chose the perfect dress for you, helped you with your hair and asked you questions about yourself as she got you ready. It was nice, but you just wanted to get the whole marriage over with.

You heard of tales about arranged marriages how the husband and wife at most were friends, but some marriages weren't as simple as that. You didn't want to jump to any conclusions since you hadn't met the prince before, but you were hoping you two could get along enough to stand a marriage.

From what you had heard, Loki was a trickster and lived in his brother's shadow most of the time. He kept to himself, wandering the gardens or reading in the library instead of partying with Thor and his friends. You could respect Loki for that, you'd choose alone time over a party any day. Frigga talked highly about her son, making you feel a bit hopeful for this marriage.

Frigga led you to the throne room where Odin and Loki were waiting for you. You fiddled with the flowing sleeves of your dress as Frigga opened the door for you. You could feel Odin staring you down as he sat on his thrown, but beside him was Loki. You glanced at the prince and you could tell he was as nervous as you.

You reached the throne, bowing in front of Odin. "Thank you for choosing me, All-Father," you said, still a bit shaky even if you had rehearsed a thousand times in your head.

"Yes, well, my son needs to be wed," Odin replied, his tone uncaring.

He gestured for Loki to go to you. Loki did so and you bowed for him. When you straightened back up, he gently took your hand and pressed a soft kiss to the back of your knuckles, your face warming at the act.

"I-it's a pleasure to meet you, Loki," you said quietly.

"The pleasure is all mine," he replied, smiling at you. "Would you like to take a walk in the gardens? They're beautiful during the sunset."

"That sounds lovely."

You looped your arm around his and he led you to the gardens.

He was right, the gardens were beautiful as the sunset. You two kept a slow pace, enjoying the gorgeous flora around you and each other's presence. You two had asked each other the typical questions, about childhood, family, things like that. You found yourself quickly warming up to him and maybe even falling for him. It was hard not to.

You came to a stop when you saw a balcony looking over the land behind the palace. You quickly walked over and stood by the railing, admiring everything as the sun slipped behind the horizon. Loki walked up and stood next to you, and you could feel his eyes on you. You looked over to face him, a small smile pulling at your lips.

"Why are you looking at me?" You asked softly, tilting your head to the side.

Loki blushed and glanced away. "Um, no reason."

You giggled. "I'm surprised Odin had to arrange your marriage. I thought women and men were tripping over themselves to have the chance."

This time, Loki laughed. "I wish it was that way, but no. I don't really...interact with anyone outside of my family and Thor's friends. I prefer to spend my time in the library or out here."

"Well, if you'd let me, I would love to join you," you said.

"I would...enjoy that," he replied, looking back at you.

You felt yourself start to lean closer to him, and him do the same. Your eyes dipped to his lips then back to his eyes. Loki closed the gap between you two and pressed his lips to yours. You melted into the kiss and his touch when he wrapped his arms around your waist. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer. His kiss was softer than you expected, and sweeter, too. You didn't want it to end, but when you two pulled away, you could tell many more were to come.

You leaned your forehead against his, a smile on both of your faces.

"I think I'd choose you even with out this whole, uh, arrangement," you said, causing the two of you to breathlessly laugh.

"I'd choose you, too, darling."

Thor is banished, stripped of his powers, and forced to live in Midgard for many years. What kind of life do you think Thor would built on Earth?

Aaaaaa this is such a fun question!!

Short answer is im not so sure lol

Longer more rambling answer full of personal headcanons under the cut :)

I mean, i presume this is after loki visits thor on earth and lies to him about frigga forbidding him from returning. Im also working under the assumption that thor doesnt actually hear from anyone from his old life again, because adding them in doesnt really feel in the spirit of the question imo.

Short term we know from canon that he feels directionless and initially focuses his energy on helping jane with her research. Thors a smart guy, and could probably help jane fill in some of the blanks in her research before she has observational evidence of like, asgard existing.

I think initally he would crash with jane, and would look into getting his own place, probably in new mexico because he's started making connections there.

Personally i headcanon that thors lightning powers manifest as a sixth sense, in that he would be able to sense electricity around him (kind of like how some sharks do with ampullae of lorenzini). So i reckon that losing that specific sense would initally be really hard to adjust to, but he would adjust.

*note. This is about where i searched "what is there to do in new mexico" because all i know about the place are it's in a thor movie and the roswell thing happened there also i kinda wanna go hiking and stargazing in new mexico now*

Honestly i think that, early on at least, thor would spend a lot of free time stargazing, partly from homesickness and partly bc apparently new mexicos an amazing place to do that. I think he would spend most nights looking up at the stars wondering if his loved ones are looking down at him.

He would probably initally make ends meet doing some sort of manual labour, maybe something with horses. He might not have asgardian strength anymore but hes still a pretty big guy. He could probably still tame a wild horse if he really wanted to (i dont know how strong you have to be to do that).

In terms of like, long term life goals, im not entirely sure. Thors entire life up to this point was about assuming the throne, and now he has to not only let the past 1000 years ago, he has to build an entire new life from the ground up. I think what would be especially challenging is the lack of time (assuming he's been turned mortal and only has like 50-60 years left). I think that realisation would force him to look inwards and figure out what he really wants in life.

To me, thor at his core is a good man. He likes helping people. He needs that sense of purpose. I think he would end up building quite a charitable life for himself. Maybe he moves, maybe he stays in new mexico, truly i have no idea. But i think at the core of his life is the need to do honest, meaningful work that benefits people.

I hope you find this an interesting answer! It feels like such a ramble of ideas (truly my brain is not working today i cant organise my ideas for shit rn). This was really fun to think about i spent a lot of time in work thinking about this, tysm for asking this!! :)

Summary: This is after Thor: dark world time line where Loki is yk (dead but not dead) and high school aged reader w enemies to lovers w Peter Parker?

An: I had a request for this but I lost it in the messages so well—I’ve decided to make this a series bc why not?

Earth seemed to be a fitting place for y/n since the family she had in Asgard grew smaller with a blink of an eye. Things just fell apart before she could comprehend what was happening. Her father Loki had left her, he had left all of them. It just seemed like a nightmare maybe all she had to do was wake up and it’ll all be gone but it wasn’t. It wasn’t a nightmare and it wasn’t that easy, it was the reality. Her reality. She would’ve still stayed at Asgard for her beloved grandmother. Frigga would’ve made it easier, y/n had been close to her grandmother ever since she was a child because her own mother was never in the picture. She felt like that child again-she wanted to hug her grandmother tightly and cry at the ends of her silk gown and she would tell her it was going to be alright.

Apparently she left her too. Not just her, her uncle as well on whom it hadn’t been easy either. Y/n herself insisted on going to Midgard where he had friends the “avengers”. It would be better for him to be around familiar people and by all means it would be better than Asgard that didn’t seem home anymore.

So here they were in the avengers headquarters around a Midgardian fashioned living room. Everyone greeted her uncle Thor with hugs and a earthy fashion of greetings while she stood there awkwardly. Everyone didn’t seem to be so welcoming to her-not non welcoming just cautious on their part. Given the fact that not too long ago her father was after taking over Midgard. Which y/n never let come between her love for her father. She loved him just as dearly she knew he wasn’t someone who’d want to hurt people. Maybe he found it fitting not to let her know because she was still quite young? Everytime she would visit his cell he would refuse to talk to her about it. Never disdain her or be irritated of her bringing it up, even in a cell his daughter could never do anything to get on his nerves. He would explain calmly, how he wanted her to know about it when she comes of age. Thinking about it now it pained her how he wouldn’t be able to do that now.

“This is my niece y/n” Thor said nudging y/n standing beside him.

“Y/n! It’s-it’s great to have you here.” Someone from the group with a weird moustache spoke to her gesturing a handshake when she was about to bow and greet him.

“Oh-“ Not Asgard! She reminded herself accepting the handshake.

“I’m Tony-Tony stark!” he introduced himself.

“You’re the steel-Iron. Iron man.” Y/n said correcting herself halfway.

“Yeah that would be me.” He completed with a chuckle. As much as Tony disliked Loki he didn’t see y/n the same way. She looked the same age as Peter so almost a kid. “This is Natahsa, she can show you your new room” he said pointing to a red haired lady with sharp expressions and a greeting smile.

“Hello you!” She started with an even wider smile and walked over to y/n “Let me show you to your room you’ll like it here!” She said placing her hands around her shoulders leading her over the stairs. Lady Natasha felt very comforting already.

The house? Headquarters? Dormitory? Y/n found it hard to differentiate but it seemed small. It wasn’t small it was just “smaller” compared to the palace she grew up in. Not that she didn’t like it, she had only been here for some time. The place would grow on her.

Natahsa guided her into her new room opening the door for her. The room was—neat. White bed sheets, glass windows, transparent drawers everything so…midgardian. But it was good, the change was good for her. “I love it!" She said grinning while stepping into the room.

“I knew you would! You can put up posters if you’d like.” Natahsa replied pointing to the wall.

“Posters?”

“Your favourite movies or bands?”

“Uh—“

“Right sorry? It’s different in Asgard—“

“It’s alright-I like it eitherways Thank you lady—no miss-“ y/n struggled to find the right title.

“There is no need for the formality you can call me natasha or nat!” Natasha replied with a smile proceeding to walk out “If you need anything my room’s right down the hall.” was the last thing she said before leaving and y/n wondered if calling a two by two walkway space a hall is extremely midgardian or was it just fun to look down to midgardian settings. Why am I thinking like father?

A week went by and earth wasn’t that bad, a change either ways was good as y/n wanted it to be, maybe that was just the calm before the storm. She met everyone, some were hesitant at first-obviously the whole “Loki’s daughter” outward show was hard for some to be comfortable with given Loki was well—Loki. But nobody was particularly harsh to her or about her late father in any way.

Tony walked into the kitchen to find y/n already there. It was a new routine now, she seemed to be somewhat of an early riser.

“Good morning y/n!” Tony said suppressing a yawn.

“Morning to you too!” She said digging into her morning cereal.

“You’re supposed to pour milk into those” tony told her surprised she was halfway through plain sugary cereals-the coloured ones that to be.

“Oh I’m aware! It’s sweeter this way. We didnt have these in Asgard and grandmother didn’t allow me a lot of sugar.”

“Obviously because they’re literally nothing but coloured sugar. Try the oats ones” Tony advised taking the box away from her before she could have ton of excessive sugar for breakfast.

“You should eat something solid” he responded to her immediate frown and tossed an apple her way. “Don’t you want to be like your uncle Thor?” He joked.

“Yes I am attempting on that with these coloured stars.” Y/n replied putting the Apple back at counter top.

Tony sighed putting the apple closer by her bowl “Also-I calculated your age to the earth with the whole earth and Asgard principal axis thing and you’re just as old as Peter so I was—”

“Peter?” She questioned mid sentence.

“Peter-You know the kid you met-“

“Oh peter parker, right yes I recall him.”

“Yes him. So I was thinking maybe you should start going to school it’s awful lot earth teenager of an experience.” Tony explained to her. He had in fact already enrolled her into the same school as Peter, he knew y/n wouldn’t refuse and either ways it wouldn’t be hard to convince her. She was too polite to refuse after a few bargains, quite opposite to her dad that way.

“A school? Here?” She asked confused.

“Yeah here-it’s not that bad they’d love you here” Tony said reassuringly.

Y/n considered if going to school here could be that bad? She thought she might turn into a bore if all she did was stay here the entire day and it would be rude to say no when Tony’s been entitled to have her go there.

“Alright-I don’t see why not?” She said with a smile.

“Great. Done then. You start tomorrow I’ve already filled up your enrolment details with the school.” Tony said walking out of the kitchen.

“Wait, tomorrow? I am not prepared enough!” She followed him out of the kitchen.

“I did get you the books and all the school supplies you’ll need plus Peter goes to the same school. You’re gonna be just fine!” Tony told her with the most enthusiastic tone in attempt to sound school interesting.

“How did you predict I’d say yes ?” She asked him with a confused shrug.

“I ‘predicted’ that because you’re too polite to say no-a softie like your uncle. Lady y/n—now if you’ll excuse me” he said in a with a fake bow walking out of the door. “We ride at dawn!” Y/n laughed at his dramatic exit and making a mental note about uncle Thor’s earthly nickname.

With the very next dawn y/n was almost up right before the sun up. It had been a long time she had the feeling of being excited about something. She thought about midgardian school setting the entire night-their fashion, the studies, the new friends she might make and it seemed similar to her studies at Asgard.

“Good morning Nat!” Y/n greeted in a cheerful tone.

“Someone’s in a good mood.” She remarked smiling at y/n sitting all ready on the couch with her school bag.

“Yes indeed! Did I tell you, I’m going to a school today!” She told Natahsa turning towards the rest of them from the couch.

“Yes you did little dove. Almost fifty times yesterday” Her uncle joked giving tugging her under his bicep to give her a side hug “I’m sure you’re going to like it there!” He ran a rough hand through her hair messing it up. Y/n groaned getting out of his grip “Uncle Thor! I’ve told you not to go that it ruins my hair!” She said trying to fix it again.

“You should stop hanging out with stark” Thor joked as everyone joined his laughter.

“I heard that!” Tony shouted from another room.

Peter and y/n drove to the school with happy instead of the bus like Peter did usually. Tony insisted on it as the whole high school dynamic was still very new to y/n. It would be easier for the first day and with Peter she could get an insight.

The whole drive was silent just happy giving random first day tips to y/n other than him Peter was very distant. He had a different toll towards y/n. She didn’t seem mean or arrogant like he had assumed of her-taking after her father. But he rather found her nicer than he ought to and that troubled him. He didn’t want to grow close to her if not required because in one sense her father did try and kill Mr. stark let alone take over New York. She didn’t seem like she’d want to do that but you can never trust someone blindly, especially when she even grew up with her father.

Happy drove off, dropping them off at school front yard as y/n just glanced around the premises, “This is the school?”

“Mhm” Peter nodded.

“It seems…small.” She pointed out in an complementing form to the school-unsure she used the right adjective. Obviously it was small compared to where she grew up but she didn’t mean to undermine it. Peter thought.

Peter rolled his eyes taking it that y/n was once again rubbing it in that ‘midgardian’ buildings were nothing compared to asgardian ones. “Your shoes” he said pointing down at them.

“What?” She asked confused.

“Your laces. You haven’t tied them.”

“-Oh I’ve to tie them together?” She bend down proceeding to tie either of them with the other one in the wrong direction.

“That’s not how—wait-“ Peter sighed bending to help tie them for her. Of course the Asgardians wouldn’t know to tie their shoes. He suppressed a scoff.

“That’s very nice of you-thank you?” She spoke with courtesies accordingly.

Peter started walking ahead with fast pace, y/n reciprocating his to keep up with him when he turned to her side and spoke “Alright can you walk exactly with five meters distance from me?”

“Umm? W-why I don’t have a pro-“ she was interrupted by him mid sentence.

“It’s just an earth way you probably wouldn’t have known.” He told her, he knew it wasn’t how people walked here but y/n didn’t. Peter just didn’t want to be seen walking in with y/n, especially with his reputation he couldn’t risk be seen as someone friends with Loki’s daughter.

“Oh? Fine with me then!”

“And-when we get inside you can ask for your classes at the front desk and they’ll also give you a locker you can put your stuff there.” Peter explained to her so he wouldn’t have to show her around when they go inside.

“Alright but-“

“Five meters!” He reminded her walking off ahead before she could ask anything.

Y/n did find it odd but it’s Midgard.

If+when you want, could u talk about Aphrodite as the Star reborn from the Sea? Ask bc I’ve (for lack of a better term) ‘recieved’ that phrase but describing Atargatis (sort of, I definitely felt it was coming from the Aphrodite-Inanna continuum). And that was before I found your blog

I’d love to. Aphrodite is particularly interesting to me because of Her fairly well-attested evolution out of older goddess cults from Babylon, Assyria, Canaan, Phoenicia, and other ancient societies in the area. She inspired me to look deeper into the connections between these goddesses and understand how similar themes were translated across multiple cultures and narratives, almost as if She weren’t a myriad of individual goddesses but a single Entity revealing Herself in a piecemeal fashion to those who wished to encounter Her.

The Star of the Sea motif is also one that is very important to me, as one who often straddles both Hellenic and Catholic theology. The name “Mary” has an etymological relationship to the title (through a scribal error), and thus an ancient title for the Virgin Mary in Catholicism is Stella Maris. Aphrodite follows the themes of Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte, and Frigga in that She is associated with the Evening/Morning Star, Venus. She was seen by the ancients, in the same way as many of these other goddesses, to follow the Sun beneath the horizon, inspiring the mythos of Her descent beyond the waters which separated the living and the dead, into the Underworld to retrieve Her fallen Lover. Mary follows this same theme in the Pieta, the mourning of Her slain Son, and the subsequent discovery of His resurrection by Mary the Magdalene. This same motif is reflected again and again, from Persephone to Isis to Cybele.

On top of these converging themes, there is the account of Aphrodite’s birth as described by Hesiod. In Theogony Aphrodite is born from the mixture of the Heavens and the Sea, from a piece of the Sky God which falls into the oceans. She is the Star which falls and is incubated in the womb of the Sea, the Flower which combines Sky and Water and Earth.

From my own personal writings:

There was the Night and all things were the Night and the Night was all things.

And within Her dark womb the Earth stirred and raised Her face to the Stars. And She fell in love with the Night.

And Night encircled Them both in a deep cerulean cloak and She became the Sky and She was reflected on Earth in the mirror of the Sea. And Their divine union stirred the waters.

And Love walked from the waves

For a start she pretty much says the fans interpretation of it as incest isn’t invalid and for a second her own interpretation of it doesn’t really explain why its not incest in her eyes and furthermore it contradicts a lot.  We’re told countless times that Loki and Sylvie are “”the same.”” Shes literally a variant of him. I would have been content to NOT see it as incest if they hadn’t made sure to let us know (in easter egg form) that Sylive and Loki share like a genetic origin. She doesn’t come from some way out alternate universe where everything is different. She comes from a sister universe where Loki was born female. She has the same parents as Loki and if her timeline wasn’t pruned she would have the same family. 

The only other thing that makes her “different” from Loki is obviously the fact that her upbringing was different after the TVA orphaned her and she had to raise herself. That doesn’t change her origins. She can’t just rename herself and suddenly shes not Loki anymore and changing her first name doesn’t change the fact that she still has the same parents as Loki.  Like Id love to see this as not incest too but when you put them both down on paper as the children of Laufey its hard to ignore.  Like if her family didn’t get pruned imagine this: Frigga your son is in a relationship with your daughter. Thor your brother is in a relationship with your sister. Lauefy your biological daughter is in a relationship with your biological son.  ?????? But this is suppose to be ignored because they’re from a different universe even when the universes only real difference is one is male and the other is female????  There is no obviously drastic difference that indicates a different origin like what is the case with Alligator Loki and maybe even boastful Loki.  I mean you could at least argue boastful Loki might have had different parents to Main!Loki or at least ONE different parent. Alligator Loki is a no brainer because hes a completely different species.  On top of ALL THIS we were told multiple times in canon that Loki and Sylvie’s relationship was wrong. Sick. Twisted. Demented. Unnatural. Ect. This obviously comes from the characters recognising that Sylvie and Loki are in fact too closely related to be trying to hook up. Though they’re variants of the same person they’re also basically boy-girl twins. 

Having different personalities and different goals and upbringings does absolutely nothing to change that. Me and my brother have different personalities, goals and even upbringings in places because he lived with my mum for a portion of his life and I didn’t. But guess what?? We’re still siblings LMAO. Like I’m sorry her explanation is UTTERLY BIZZARE & makes NO SENSE.  Get me wrong I don’t think Loki & Sylvie's “”romance”” is sustainable. I wouldn’t think it was even if it was written better. I don’t see it lasting and in fact I kind of think its already ended. But this is still so weird. And the way the canon handled this ““romance”“ was so forced and half hearted. 

I seriously cannot get my head around why it was ever there. Like I thought maybe it was another part of the writing team trying to indicate to us that it was wrong but with Kate saying this now I’m just ????  Also don’t like to think Loki would just casually engage in incest / any cest period and before anyone sprouts shit about the Horse Story A) Did not happen in the MCU and B) the whole horse story is born of a specific sort of homo/transphobia that existed in ancient Nordic culture, do some research. But like ??? if they could give me a SOLID understandable reason for why its not BASCIALLY incest I’d eat it up bc IF I HAVE TO HAVE SYLKI as canon ID REALLY love for it to at least not be Incest.  Then maybe I could be “”okay”” with it. Id still have my problems with it because theres just a LOT of awkwardness even outside of the too-close-to-siblings for comfort, but it wouldn’t be a completely untouchable relationship. You could imagine it being OKAY if it was written better and not seemingly used to censor  Lokis queerness but. 

Like really the least they could have done was been like “Sylvie had totally different parents”. Its an AU. Sylvie's parents could have been anyone. Any frost giants could have stood in Lafuey’s place. If its a different universe the royal Jotun family could have been totally different. But no, no one wanted to use their brains for ten seconds and just rushed together this cringe m/f presenting romance with no deeper thought because yawn. Obviously Frost Giant Laufey doesn't have to be your father for a Loki to be a Loki (again see Alligator Loki )  And thats another reason why I’m pissed with this whole series. Because its just sloppy with little thought for anything. Now those of us who arent painfully straight and arent 2012 era fangirls who are just seeing Sylvie as a self-insertion vessel to vicariously live out their wishful fantasies of having Loki fall hopelessly in love with them, have to sit here and bang our heads on the wall bc none of it makes sense and its tragic for both characters and Loki’s actual fanbase.  Just.

Okay, this may seem far fetched but hey, hear me out. To add to my comfort AU where nothing goes wrong and both Sylvie and Loki are happy, imagine him bringing her to visit Asgard. To show her what she’s been missing as a child. A safe home. 

No cause firstly it’ll be so confusing and awkward Imagine the family dinner; 

“So brother, are you telling me that she’s another version of you?”

 “Well yes but actually no. You see, gushes over how amazing she is and how she’s very much different from being a Loki.”  

Just imagine the knowing smile on Frigga’s face and the smile of embarrassment on Sylvie’s ueueue

I can imagine after the dinner, Sylvie would walk around the place with Frigga and eventually they’ll walk over to the palace’s garden. Its basically late at that point and they’re just,,, talking. Sylvie likes it cause its quiet and comforting. No catastrophic event, no loud explosions, no people screaming and running for their lives.. just silence, and crickets.

 With the comforting presence of a mother figure. At one point she’d talk about HER mother, who she barely remembers. She doesn’t remember her mother’s soft touch, her mother comforting her when it rains with thunder. None. But she’d still try to grip any memory that’s still with her, trying to remember. 

 At one point, Frigga would teach her how to make a flower crown. She’s never had a daughter before (well, she got Hela, but Hela don’t have time for flower crowns. She’d be out for blood.) and so why not teach this maiden, her soon-to-be-daughter-in-law, how to make one? Surprisingly, Sylvie enjoyed it. It made her calm. When she’s done, she would show Frigga the end result and beam with pride. And Loki would watch them while keeping out of sight, smiling at her.

Sylvie would make another one, for Loki actually. when it’s getting really late, and both of them had to part ways to rest for the night, Frigga would give her the biggest hug she’d ever had. The hug of a mother she’d been longing to have. And then they part ways. (Loki would be RUNNING to his chambers at this point, not wanting to get caught LMAO) 

 “Thank you for tonight ma’am. It’s been lovely.” 

 ”It’s alright for you to call me your mother, my dear. Have a good night.” 

 So she returned to her chamber, her flower crown on her head and the other, she holds in her hands carefully, not wanting to ruin the flowers. As she gets ready for bed, someone knocked on her door. And who is it? Loki, of course. He’d sit on her bed and they’d chat about how amazing today has been. She’d said that this is by far her favorite memory yet. He’d look at her lovingly and smiled.

 “Yeah well, my family’s a bit handful, aren’t they?”

 “Also fun. Its nice to be around them.” 

 anD IM ENDING THIS WITH THEM CUDDLING TO SLEEEP BC WHY NOTTTT He’d stroke her hair gently and kisses her forehead before falling asleep.

 Its been a while when she’s got a nice, good sleep actually. She’d wake up to her lover’s sleeping face. The one whom she would want to wake up next to for the rest of her life.

Here’s how i feel on the distinction between loki crushing on sylvie vs the spidermen calling themselves brothers:

In the spider’s case, they all relate to one another and feel a kinship because they’ve ALL gone through the experience of becoming spiderman. They’ve all lost a ben, they’ve all gotten bit by a spider, they’ve all decided that they need to become a superhero. They’ve all grown up experiencing the same life and for the first time in any of their lives…someone finally understands; they no longer feel alone. Had they been given the choice to keep in touch i just KNOW they would’ve wanted to hang out whenever they could, even if all they did was rag on toby!spiderman for his weird-ass organic webs! The point is that they feel they are brothers BECAUSE of their shared experiences.

But when you look at the lokis…no two lokis seem to have experienced the same story. I mean they all seemed to have generally followed a vague outline of what loki’s life “should” be; but they don’t ever really reference any specific characters or events that our loki has experienced. The most you’ll find are mentions of things that already exist in the mcu…but no major story beats like frigga dying or discovering he’s a frost giant or even ragnarok! There’s no guarantee that the avengers are even made up of the same people in boastful!Loki’s story-and that’s assuming it’s even true! There doesn’t seem to BE a universally shared loki experience. He does too many things that go against what the sacred timeline wants from him. The closes thing you will find is classic!Loki. He is essentially the loki that managed to escape death, but only because he proceeded to play dead for almost all eternity (and as much as i love the idea that this means our loki is still alive, i do sincerely believe that the writers intend for you to take away from this that Classic!Loki is the only loki to do this). There’s even a moment where tva loki asks him about his life, because he experienced the same timeline that he saw in the tva. Those two get a moment where they have a shared experience and THAT is where you might find the kinship. (Bonus points that Richard E. Grant and Tom hiddleston have both joked that Grant could play Hiddleston’s dad, how poetic)

Anyway my point is that Loki and sylvie—from the get-go—are established to be different people. She has been a fugitive all her life; even when they DO talk about her childhood…they go out of their way to tell the audience that her childhood was fundamentally different to loki’s (her parents told her she was adopted, she didn’t have anyone to teach her magic, her mother is implied to not be the same as loki’s because when he tells her about his mom she seems wistful and sad about not growing up with a mother bc of the tva, but doesn’t comment as though she recognizes Frigga as her mother and instead as though she were a stranger) They do not have related experiences, and so the only connection they HAVE is through their shared experiences with the tva and lamentis. Because there’s nothing in the past to build a relationship backwards from, they can only build it moving forward. Which they do! Bonded by trauma on lamentis (in a heart pounding adrenaline filled adventure that’s sure to get the brain’s chemicals confused and thus making it easier to fall in love…that’s a thing btw! If you ever want ur crush to like you take them to a roller coaster ;) ), and forced apart almost immediately (absence makes the heart grow fonder anyone?) and you’ve got yourself a surprisingly natural form of the “falling in love after just a few days together” trope; that’s pretty impressive when the show only had 6 episodes to work with and they had the very difficult task of establishing time travel mechanics and multiverse theory in a way that future mcu projects could functionally use on top of writing their own plot.

Notice how in none of these takes—spider, or loki, or sylvies or otherwise—does the topic of literal relations ever come up. Because the canon that the mcu is going with IS THAT VARIANTS FROM OTHER UNIVERSES ARE NOT RELATED. It doesn’t matter if someone feels like disagreeing or thinks they know better, because that’s become a law of the mcu now that the writers are going to go with. None of the variants are siblings for REAL, and so the only way to become sibling-like is through experiences shared on a case-by-case basis. The story requires its audience to suspend its disbelief a little bit and accept when its telling them something that it should be taken as a fact of that story if said story is ever going to get to anything in that story. People complaining that the mcu can’t decide how it wants the mcu to view variant’s relationships are the same people who are ignoring the fact that the mcu isn’t explaining how you should view these relationships because they already did that. The mcu said “no they aren’t literally related by blood or dna” and antis went “that’s dumb” and harassed the crew over it. The circle talk is just because the answer hasn’t changed and so they’re hoping to eventually find an answer they LIKE.

It’s not bad writing just because someone doesn’t want it to happen or thinks the story would be better if they didn’t do x thing, it’s just something that isn’t that person’s taste.

People have latched onto the headcanon that variants are siblings, that they share dna and they won’t let it go which is why they’re latching onto the spider-men calling each other brothers so hard, they believe it proves their headcanon that sylki is incest, they honestly and truly and wholeheartedly believe that Disney would have a canonically incestious ship in one of its most popular shows on its streaming platform before even entertaining the idea that they just royally misconstrued the entire concept of the multiverse and variants.

TVA Loki just being the embodiment of "WTF" was great because, honestly? look at what's happened. he was pruned, but he's not dead, but there's a kid, an old guy, and another guy claiming to be him, there's a random alligator with his horns, he was told they have to move before he dies, and it just overall makes no sense. i love how TVA Loki said he just didn't even question the alligator because of how crazy everything is. and now he just is accepting the fact that he is an alligator in another universe and refusing to question it because that is too much.

Sylvie self pruning herself to get to Loki aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Sylvie said there was one happy memory she had. was that supposed to reference the moment she had with Loki. if so, that is like huge set up for romantic stuff.

Loki now has two on screen hugs (Loki & Frigga in Thor (2011), Loki & Mobius in Loki (2021)). plus he had an off screen hug with Thor in Thor: Ragnarok (2017), i'm sure of it.

ok back to TVA Loki, Sylvie, and Aliath. TVA Loki doing what he can to distract Aliath, but it not being enough, and the panic he had on his face, it was beautiful.

TVA Loki told Sylvie they're more powerful than they realize when they saw Classic Loki's projection of Asgard. and then TVA Loki was able to enchant Aliath. do Lokis have a natural affinity for sorcery, it's just some do more with it or different types than others?

also, nexus being set up? in WandaVisoin, Wanda learned how to do the runes thing almost immediately. that might be part of a nexus being's powers, the ability to just be really good beginners at magic. so maybe the Lokis are nexus beings? or maybe not quite nexus beings but close?

Outline # -1 Abandoned Lore (Trinity)

I have learned my lesson, I will be writing these on Google docs and then copy-pasting onto Tumblr. While I am on GD, I figured I might as well open the docs I used to write the actual fic. Man, I went through a ton of hoops to get where I am. I will be using the most coherent ones for reference. 

I can literally track my thought process as I went through writing all the different versions and I still have no idea how tf I went from this to dropping a flaming papermache whale on Ra’s Al Ghul. And I will die mad about it. Which means more meticulous notes in the future I guess.

Also, I’d like to apologize for how long it took to get this out, I have no sense of time whatsoever and as always, there’s a lot more than expected. This was 7 pages long

Original Ramble Post 

Like most of my stories, the MC is an OCI - reincarnator brought into a fictional world they once watched. (Because I am obsessed with that trope.)

I now find the original name I had for her cringy and out-of-place given these are norse gods. So, from now on her name is Lokka, which is the female version of Loki

There’s a whole ass backstory about the transition of godly names and power I won’t go into. Just think Thor and female Thor kind of thing I guess. She’s basically seen as a spare Loki but it’s also a respected position.

Was tempted to name her Sigyn since Marvel doesn’t care about actual norse myth relations. No, Idc that there’s a canon Sigyn.

If you’re curious, the original name was Aradia. Yes, like the queen of witches.

MC is an asgardian, the daughter of the librarian in the royal palace and a blacksmith

She managed to get an apprenticeship under Loki and is occasionally taught by Frigga. She also learns under Eir when both her royal teachers are busy.

Lokka found her way into the central plane, probably having found it’s location from Loki’s notes and is unaware that it’s unstable.

So, Lokka is in the central plane, having the time of her life exploring new lands when she stumbles across a crying Marinette who is very lost 

Unlike Lokka, Marinette does not know where she is or what is going on. She literally just tripped into a portal and has no way home.

Lokka takes Marinette under her wing and promises to help her find a way home

Problem is, she doesn’t know which of the three universes Marinette is from.

Even if/when she finds out that the girl is from MLB-verse, she still wouldn’t know which one that is because she has no reference to which world is which. Only that Marinette is probably not from Asgard.

At this point, she is unaware she lived in Marvel, she just knows Asgard is Norse Mythology.

So they continue to wander the central plane, Marinette ends up picking up a card guardian for a pet, accidentally becoming a cardcaptor. 

Marinette has trouble pronouncing Lokka and Lokka gives Mari permission to call her Cosette (pre-reincarnation name)

Meanwhile, Ra’s sends Damian and Talia into the Central plane for combat experience and resource gathering.

Ra’s might be 700 years old, he might have access to the Central plane but he sure doesn’t know about magic or how it came to be or the current state of it. He might know something’s off because all the inhabitants have been increasingly on edge and the weather’s been stranger than usual but he didn’t deemed it important

Notably, he has never seen anyone other than those who he’d sent in himself in the central planes (CP, from now on bc I am getting tired of typing the entire thing out) so as far as he knows, the CP’s only entrance point is under his control.

Talia and Damian, who’s still going by Hafid, go hunting for resources and training

They separate for a bit for individual hunting/training time

Marinette and Cosette (Lokka) stumble across Damian’s camp

Misunderstandings occur, Damian fights them, more accurately he fights Cosette

Cosette tries to protect Marinette while also making sure not to harm her opponent

It was harder than she expected considering her opponent was a child

Asgardian training pulls through and she is able to do both

Damian’s tied up, Marinette is confused, and Cosette does not want to deal with this

Negotiation time

Marinette can’t speak Arabic, Damian doesn’t know french, and Cosette has all-speak

This means Cosette’s sitting there, having to repeat everything the kids say to each other for translation’s sake

also misunderstandings before the kids realize allspeak is a thing

Cosette is stuck with two kids who don’t like each other, one of which barely puts up with her so she does what most adults do when kids are too troublesome

Distract them: she does magic tricks with actual magic

Damian+Marinette are fascinated, Cosette accidentally gains two magic students 

even though she’s still learning herself and all she has for guidance right now are Loki’s and Frigga’s notes

So, the trio end up travelling together

Damian demands Marinette should at least be able to fight so they train her too

They also figure out that Marinette and Damian’s worlds are not the same.

Cosette drills some value of life, basic morals, and feminism into Damian’s head

Marinette and Damian (Hafid) have trouble pronouncing each other’s names

They chose nicknames for each other from Cosette’s bedtime stories

Marinette is obviously angel or Tenko

Damian is gets Kabane, the name of a half demon

Kabane later changes to Kasane, protective blade

Yes, Cosette was/is a weeb and yes, they still mispronounce names which defeats the whole purpose but at least they kids don’t notice now even if Cosette is cringing every time they

They run into another card guardian and this one goes to Damian.

Cosette does not pout about this, it would be very immature

One training montages, several fights, a couple language lessons, and an abandoned (and Cosette-raided) house later, Cosette gets to the part of Loki’s notes where she figures out that the CP is collapsing in on itself and uh-oh

She tells the kids the gist of it but they’re too smart, ask all the right questions, and end up figuring out the important parts of situation that she’s trying to keep from them

Cosette is both impressed and a little put out, mostly impressed because not only did they figure out extremely complex magic, they also mostly remained level headed.

Marinette wants to rescue the card guardians and for once Damian is backing her up so Coestte gives up the notion of returning home and they go collect the guardians.

Remember, DC and MLB universes are closing in on each other 

MCU is drifting away

If they don’t collect the guardians, Cosette would have the time to just drop them off at their world collection points and head back to hers

After collecting a couple guardians, they end up finding Talia and explain the situation to her.

Talia joins the gang, she may or may not be plotting a marriage

They raid a couple more houses, collect the 54 card guardians, and complete the power transfer ritual (replacing the Yue’s trial because the cards are the guardians)

The cards end up latching onto the three kids. 

Marinette gets the Mistress title, Damian gets Sun Guardian, and Cosette gets Moon guardian.

Originally Cosette was going to be the mistress and Marinette the Moon guardian but because of the way I’ve decided magic works in this world - explaining that will need a whole other post - if Marinette is the moon guardian and gets the Ladybug miraculous, she will - for lack of better word - get sick and possibly die... or not.

Y’know what, it made sense at the time. But now that I think about it, we’re going back to the original idea.

Cosette’s the Card Mistress, Marinette’s the Moon guardian and Damian’s the Sun guardian.

Spoiler alert: that is a plot point for tropes-verse.

The completion of the ritual breaks puts CP deteriorations in high acceleration

Damian and Talia get into their circle, Cosette and Marinette in the other

Damian doesn’t have any cards bc he doesn’t want his grandfather trying to get to them. He and Talia agreed Ra’s would only know about the CP’s destruction. He does, however, have a CP beast that they picked up.

CP beast: magical creature that was born of CP’s magical residue or smth

Damian’s looks like a Teddiursa (Teddy bear pokemon) it is not

They have a notebook from a raided house detailing CP’s deterioration for proof

Cosette goes with Marinette because she can’t make it back to her universe and in the event that Marinette’s also from Cosette’s universe, she won’t be alone

They separate with the promise of meeting again.

At this point, I have had several differing ideas

They all go into DC world because they aren’t sure of Marinette’s world

Child trio goes into MLB world and Talia tells Ra’s Damian died

Everyone goes into MLB and Ra’s finds out about the collapse when he tries going in himself and finds out he can’t and just assumes they died

One of the things I forgot to mention in the rambling post is that while Marvel-verse was pulling away, it also messed with the time regulation thing, a day in the Maribat-verse will

Time in CP was very messed up

Kind of assumed readers could piece it together but I figured might as well make it obvious and straight up say it

MLBU: Cosette and Marinette arrive safely 

Marinette is delivered home and Cosette has to figure something out

They find out Marinette has only been gone for a week

Marinette has some separation anxiety for about three days

Cosette slowly realizing this is an MLB universe and having a crisis

Cosette gets adopted by the Dupain-Chengs and starts working at the bakery

I have not figured out ages for Cosette

MLB goes like most Maribat fics pre-gotham because I’m lazy

Will likely be adjusted if I ever actually write this fic

Except Cosette steps in when things got too far and Paris has 3 heroes

Cosette is the known as the Sorciere or Lokka

Her uniform is just her asgardian armor

Good but misguided Adrien, Cosette probably adopts him too

Love square goes platonic and Cosette is glad this rom-com is over

Magic tutoring continues

Cosette is neutral with Fu and fascinated by the miraculous

One of the first things to merge is the internet, because it doesn’t have a physical body and it’s just waves of information

News and discoveries between the world are being swapped

Given what I remember from DC and dimension travel, it wouldn’t be surprising if they figured out universes were merging.

The news about JL and Paris’s situation are causing all kinds of confusion

Cosette beings looking for information on Damian

As the physical world begins merging, there’s pockets of space where you can slip from one world into another; not quite portals but close

Eventually the trip to NY became a trip to Gotham because their plane slipped between planes (sorry, I saw the chance and I had to take it.) but yeah, that happened.

There’s quite a few details I’m forgetting

DCU: Damian and Talia arrive ok and report bare basics to Ra’s

It has also only been a week

Ra’s is displeased to find them back until they report the state of the CP

There’s the whole coup not long after and Damian is sent to Bruce

Damian is much more innocent looking when he’s bringing what appears to be a teddy bear with him

It’s name is Abd and it has grown wings by now. Actual name pending.

He gets teased about it, but under Cosette’s teachings, he has learned the virtue of patience, underestimation, and getting revenge with a side of entertainment

He does not try to kill Tim either

He also has to make the choice of bringing Abd with him as Damian or as Robin

He choses to make a side company for WE making toys based off creatures from the CP so Abd wouldn’t look too out of place

It takes two weeks for the bats to realize there’s something off about the Abd

They are convinced it’s haunted and Damian is very entertained

Abd only moves in daytime when no one - Damian excluded - can see it

Movement can expel magic that interferes with recording tech

Alfred is the first to figure it out and surprise, surprise, he has some magic books for Damian to learn from

It’s from the Wayne family library and they just assumed the language was lost to time. At least three are from Alfred’s own family.

Bat brothers spend the next 6 months trying to convince Damian his magical pet bear is a haunted doll.

Damian sort of getting along with Poison Ivy because his Sun magic is very compatible with plants and they love him

On an unrelated note, the plants seem to refuse to attack the new Robin

Damian randomly, unconsciously humming to songs Cosette and Marinette sang

Damian just vibing with the magic users of JL and Teen Titans

No one took him seriously at first but he pointed something out during a conference

“Robin, stand down and let the magic users handle this” - Green Lantern, probably

Constantine who actually knows what he’s talking about “No, no, let the boy talk.”

The plan was twice as efficient after Damian was through with it

Now Constantine’s trying to adopt Damian as an apprentice, he’s failing bc the bats are protective and possessive of what is theirs

Reminder that Damian brings Abd with him everywhere and he’s still getting teased about it from anyone who is not a bat (still convinced the thing is haunted)

The only thing the magic users have picked up about Abd is that he’s a magical construct which could mean a number of things but they brush it off as just a doll.

No one is prepared for the thing to come to life, multiply in size, and start spitting ice, sleep sand, and illusions. (Hiccups bubbles and can also turn into a cloud.)

They are also not prepared for the thing to quadruple in size and for Damian to ride it like a horse into battle. Reminder that Abd has wings and can fly.

Confusing talk about what’s going on in Paris and some other parts of the world

JL slowly figure out the universal merger that Damian already knows about

Time moves on and one day, a plane from the other world arrives in Gotham

There’s a bit of confusion but it’s not exactly the first time something like this has happened at this point

WE steps up and offers jobs and a tour and all the usual Maribat plans (not just for the kids but all the other people on the plane)

Given the merger of the internet, MLB class and crew have some idea who the Waynes are and they accept. 

Estimated about 6 months for full merger so people from MLB world are kinda just stuck there until then

Lila literally cannot lie about knowing the Waynes personally but she sure can lie about other things.

Dick and Damian are sent in to monitor the group

The reunion is awkward given they can’t freely interact and are not supposed to know each other. 

While Dick is talking, there are just wide eyed staring between Marinette, Damian, and Cosette. With something a little extra between Marinette and Damian.

Cosette is torn between laughing and groaning at another rom-com trope coming in fast.

She ends up filming it bc blackmail is always good to have

Adrien is confused and quite frankly, he’s really just there to cover for them

The tour begins and about five minutes in, the trio breaks off and exchanges stories and names.

Cosette hears about Batman and has a dawning realization of what this world is, mentally nopes out, later digests that they are going into Maribat verse

Starts checking off Maribat tropes they’re coming across bc she might as well have fun with it

They continue to meet up

Batfam thinking Damian somehow managed to get two girlfriends

Damian choking on his breakfast when it is brought up

this baby boy can and will fight God and Cosette’s not really the kind to hold him back

as promised by me and as anxiously anticipated by at least 2 people(!), i am releasing process notes, deleted scenes, and author's commentary for PFYTTC

today's release: author commentary and annotations pt 2/3

Thor draws back, raises his chin. His pulse is in his ears. He should never have come in the first place. He could have lived with what peace they had between them, and now he won't even have that. this whole thing is only happening bc they've both spent 1000+ years too fuckin shit coward to say what they want to say in case the other one's just gonna fucking drop them the minute something upsets the status quo "Mother loved you she loved asgard more. it was her job to. but unlike Odin she did love other things, including her children ," he challenges, his voice rising. "I loved you." They both know Odin loved nothing but Asgard. It goes unsaid.

His brother flips his hand dismissively. "You loved everyone, what’s one more." lol burn

"I loved you best!" This is true. Odin tried to instill within Thor his own love of empire but it never took. Thor is selfless for a man but he is also self-centered because he is only a man. He does not have the distance or breadth of vision to be a king. He will always love the things he personally loves best.

Thor is on his feet as static gathers in the air I really like the idea that Thor is and contains storms, not just thunder. He is wind and rain and nourishment and destruction. Loki stops, holds his gaze steadily, breathing hard. "I was happy," he says after a moment. "Perhaps it was never to any great effect, but I was happy once. It was never an uncomplicated happiness but he had a lot of it, he was real close to it. So he lashed out every now and again through the ages, caused a bit of chaos, and people would get mad at him, but he could always go home, to Thor, to Frigga, to people who would see his faults and call it mischief. It was not uncomplicated, but he could have lived a life in that space. He could have learned to love a cage. But then, I was not who I thought I was." He drags in a breath and wrings together his trembling hands. "And I did not know what I know now." Loki is speaking to his "demotion" to being Thor's brother as much as he is speaking to his finding out about his being Jotun here. He is referring to the whole situation: he has found out that all his life's happiness was manufactured by Odin, from the ground up. Thor thinks he is referring to the fact that Thor has just appeared to agree with some very nasty opinions Odin had of him and he is already starting to feel really fuckin guilty about that. Because Thor is an anxious personality and anxious personalities are kind of inherently self centered in the face of personal conflict. He stands in the middle of his sparse, dark little room and looks, suddenly, unspeakably small and lost. Thor steps toward him, but his brother looks up and fixes him with a glittering stare and he stops. This is Thor at peak anxiety right now. He did a bad thing and he isn't allowing himself to apologise. It is killing him, but he still has a role to play, he still has to pretend he is in the right because men do not back down in a fight and right now they are fighting

"So I have been selfish and self-serving, but who else but I served Loki-prince?" he says bitterly. "I was faithful to Asgard for over a thousand years and saw nothing but ashes for it. So if I took the things that Asgard would not give me in the end, ought I to be sorry?” Loki has backed the fuck down. Loki has turned all that anger and bitterness of a fight and directed it inwards. Loki is infected with a different flavour of toxicity.

Thor huffs and breaks his gaze to hide his discomfort. "You were prince of the Nine Realms," he replies darkly. "What could you have possibly wanted for that could not be furnished to you?" this is still true! Loki's life was a cage -- both their lives have been cages, but damn what a gilded fucking cage. Damn, what riches and luxury. Thor is also responding to Loki's long, old habit of indulgence, of collecting and insisting on finery. Some part of him was soothed by expensive things from the existential plight of living in a cage. He kept a thousand exotic plants and dozens of clever and colourful birds. His walls were hung with iridescent papers and intricate tapestries. He had books of knowledge and trinkets of power that even Odin had never laid hands on. Thor always joked that Loki's household was the other vault of Asgard's treasures. But lol material soothing can only get you so far

Loki snarls, "I have never had what I truly wanted, have you?" Loki wanted answers. He never got answers out of his life, and when he did, he was cast from it, cage broken, unable to return. He also wanted Thor. Big ol sore spot, how badly he wanted Thor and was unable to have him. He's referring to that right now more than the others. This is the part that's relevant bc he thinks Thor is rejecting him. The room flares bright white for a moment and Thor startles, whirling about. Loki's foxfire pulses threateningly in its brazier. I included Loki's foxfire primarily as a visual counterpoint to all of Thor's moody storm environmental effects. I wanted Loki also to have something that responded physically to his inner state.

Thor crosses his arms over his chest defiantly. He will not be cowed by a display of theatrics. "I had everything," he lies even though he knows it is not what Loki means. Oh some sad sick part of his soul has always known, even as he was subjected to more shame about it

Loki goes stiff and then, all at once, the venomous rage empties from his sharp face. He asks with a sudden, pleading sorrow, “Then do you not want me like I want you?” BIG. SAD.

Greedy Thor, arrogant Thor does not respond, but his brother meets his burning gaze and seems to see through him. Thor’s heart is caught beneath his chin. He doesn’t know what Loki sees, but he prays that it is not everything. We get to play this game some more where the reader knows that Loki wants Thor and Thor wants Loki but neither of them know that about each other. Haha. It's the U in UST guys. What fun.

Loki searches him a moment longer but then looks away. Thor feels a cavernous feeling as if he has been assessed somehow and found lacking. But Thor has won: his brother is crying and doing a poor job in hiding it. He waits for the satisfaction to come and to chase away the guilt. GOOD JOB THOR YOUR TOXIC MASCULINITY HURT EVERYONE IN ITS CONFUSION

But then Loki turns. "You're not the first I've disappointed with my unworthiness, brother," he says, quiet again, still again, distant. "You are hardly the first to cast me out because I did not suit. This is as close to "you're just like your father!" as we're gonna get in this argument haha Hate me if you want, then," he says, a fissure opening beneath his smooth voice, "but I never hated them, your friends, your family, or Asgard. I only ever hated how they hated me, and yet you still loved them for it." Jesus fuckin Christ the depth of rejection that Loki has continuously felt from his society for being The Wrong Kind Of Man. But it was always, "it's fine, my family still loves me" and then he finds out it's not his family. Then he finds out he's not anything to anybody. Loki wants somebody in his corner who is in no one else's corner. Thor isn't that person until he's asked to choose. He still hasn't been asked to choose. He's not going realize it's a choice until it's too fucking late. He spreads his palm and light gathers between his fingertips. Thor knows what that is. Loki keeps his most dangerous treasures in his pocket dimension. Thor knows this, and Thor is afraid, as he has been afraid since Loki tried to kill himself in thor1, that Loki is going to try to kill himself again. This has been a thing between them for this whole time, unable to be spoken of or even looked at for fear that acknowledging it will bring it that much closer to reality. But it has always been there, in the corner, lurking like a fucking grotesque, like a ghost. This has been part of their distance, the reason Thor has been so weird and delicate with Loki this whole time they've been on this ship. He doesn't know how to fight that monster, and it scares him so fucking bad.

Thor lunges for him, his pulse in his ears, crossing the room in three quick strides. He seizes his brother by the wrist and Loki's pocket dimension snaps shut; whatever implement he was retrieving dissolves back into the darkness. Loki jerks away instinctively but Thor holds him tight. "I am not casting you out!" he cries HEY REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME SOMEBODY CAST LOKI OUT. He crowds into him with his body, Loki stepping back for his every step forward until the wall stops them both. Thor pins his brother's arm. Loki looks jolted a moment, confusion opening his face as Thor leans his weight against him. They are both breathing hard. "I am not," he repeats. Ok there's a lot happening here. Continuing with the overall theme of this whole fic, Thor and Loki are going to be having two completely separate conversations with each other simultaneously, each bringing to bear their own separate fucking truckload of baggage and assumptions. They have very bad communication here bc they have always had very bad communication. They can never seem to get on the same page bc they can never be fully honest with each other. It's A Lot. We know that right. We can feel a lot happening here. Good cos I had to rewrite this section literally 6 times to fit all the things happening here. We got a) Loki just attempted to use the space stone to flee b) thor doesn't know about the space stone c) Thor thinks Loki might still be suicidal d) Loki is feeling fucking rejected after his horrible, indirect, unclear attempt at a love confession e) loki is feeling some mighty kabe-don inflicted sexual tension right now f) also Thor's immense despair and guilt

Loki shoves at him with his free arm, his hand balling and gripping him menacingly by the open collar of his chest plate. "No?" he asks, acid hissing through his voice once more. "Odd, then, how that was what it sounded like." We are going to react to surface level emotions here first. Address the addressed: is Thor casting Loki out? Let's emotionally respond to that

"I was only angry," Thor says, his mouth dry, bracing, expecting the violence of his brother's anger. "I didn’t mean what I said." This is a lame excuse but Thor is very fucking emotionally crippled because he has never fucking learned a way to deal with his negative emotions other than by fucking physically lashing out. The verbal lashing out is actually new and a step forward. The backing down and trying to apologize is also new, but still lame as all get out and fuckin weak. Toxic masculinity :) I write my characters with significant faults :) But Loki isn't fighting him. Ok now we're gonna get into the dirty unspoken stuff Thor knows how his brother fights, has been stung by those deadly hands often enough; he knows that his brother is not a man easily mastered. Why isn't Loki fighting? But Loki gasps oh no it's bc he's turned on as though Thor has hurt him, and beneath Thor's agony and his racing pulse, a black thrill runs him through oh no now they're both turned on. He changes his grip on Loki's wrist, and pushes his shoulder back until his arm bends up above his head. Loki lets him, this is a recurring sentence: things only ever go forward bc Loki lets them. Loki is ultimately always in control of progression. It's part of the power balancing I keep track of in their relationship watching. Thor's mind races; his terror mounts. He feels powerful. OH THERES A LOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW. EVERY POINT PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED COLLASPES DOWN ONTO THIS ONE POINT. ITS A LOT. "Brother, I didn't mean it," he rasps. "Don't go." He is trembling. This is the line that's supposed to clue you in on the whole "Loki attempted suicide once and Thor's afraid he's gonna do it again" thing. Because we know that Loki has the infinity stone and we know he's got it as a backdoor to escape the ship if things get too stressful for him, but we also know Thor doesn't know that. So what is he referring to when he says "don't go"? Where could loki possibly go if Thor doesn't know he's got a magical backdoor mechanism? Oh, death, he's still afraid he might hurt himself. *jazz hands* writing

Loki's eyes grow narrow. "Oh, Thor," he breathes, "are you frightened?" This is....referring to a lot. But most surface level, it's Loki goading Thor about the fact that he's afraid to want the way loki wants. Thor takes that subconsciously but chooses to address only the aspects of kingship which are on his mind. Loki is trapped within his body but Thor is trapped within his body and his duty -- they don't know this about one another so they talk past each other

"Yes," Thor says readily. "Is that so surprising to you?" He needs to let him go, but instead his grip tightens on Loki's arm. He feels Loki's throat working, the subtle movements of his head and neck, and he feels, again, the stirring, ugly cruelty lust and violence are both urges in which one wants to bodily impact somebody else's body. With sex off the table (bc they're brothers!) it must just be violence right? that has lived inside him all his life. Its pulse fills his mouth, like a separate thing from his own. It is a separate thing, that's partially loki!! Spoilers we don't know that yet lol Thor's blood and body ignite for one indomitable moment before the guilt overruns him, his own self-disgust. id vs superego, fight. He puts his face into his brother's shoulder so that he might avoid his incising gaze. "Yes, I am frightened," he says hollowly. "I did not want this." Thor is talking about their violence. Loki hears him talking about their lust

Thor is lowly and vulgar and undeserving of being called a man. He is the very basest creature, captive to his vagaries, caring for nothing but his own comfort and gratification. good news thor was privately thinking about his lust! It's his id! He will destroy this cobweb peace between them for an upper hand, drive his brother away in a fit of pique, and for what? But his mental justifications are still gonna be about his violence! Superego!

He feels Loki stiffen as Thor's misery makes him dull and heavy. "Want what, be specific," his brother hisses. HAHA IDIOT He shoves at Thor again, curses crackling in his fist this time, no mere punctuation. I like this line

"Any of this. All of it," Thor mutters thickly. His feels his own breath hot on his face as the leather shoulders of Loki's shirt repel it back to him. Not really worth a note, but I know people keep trying to superimpose medieval clothing terms onto Asgardian fashion, and it doesn't really work. What loki wears as a costume is not a jerkin (not a vest), surcoat (not a smock), or a tunic (not long enough or belted). It's a shirt (sleeves, fitted torso). I refer to it, therefore, as a shirt. The trap in his throat cannot contain his every secret, and what spills out does so like a cut vein. I like this line "Odin’s kingdom, the crown, the fate of Asgard." Wow buddy way to fucking bring up all the things we weren't here to talk about, ok. But in this context, it's also all the stuff Thor's wanted to say to loki and has never had the space to do so. They've really had very little time together once things started going bad. He squeezes his eyes shut and grieves that he cannot even be with Loki, cannot ask of him to share a drink without Loki's bad faith and his own bad impulses coming between them. This is really the problem at the bottom of their relationship. Loki doesn't believe anything is good and can't be broken and Thor has violence instead of emotional regulation

They truly are ruined, he thinks, as he counts his brother's quick heartbeats through his palm, and Thor can be neither the man he wants to be nor the man he needs to be anymore. Referencing to avengers endgame and his conversation with Frigga. I'm trying to establish that this conflict has history and is already rooted in him here. "I did not want for them to take me," he says. "I did not want to become that which I hated, what you hated, what had killed you and our mother and made our father a stranger to us. This is referring back to his whole realization about Empire in MLIES. It's important that he talks about it bc Loki doesn't know he's had this realization if he doesn't! I thought I would rather die, but now it is here anyway, and there is nowhere left for me to run."

There is a pause and then Loki says, his voice soft and careful. "It is kingship, brother. It is what we were born to do." Loki is fucking spooked. Thor has never been this clear or verbose about his criticism of Odin.

Thor lets out a breath like a sob. "It is a rotten job, Loki. It is rotten to its core." I think it's very funny to refer to being king as "a rotten job" He lifts his head and searches his brother's face. "It consumes you, it becomes your world until your heart may hold nothing but it, and your soul may love nothing but it, and you would rather see your queen die for it and your sons disgraced for it rather than lose even a fraction of it." Odin worst-husband and ever worser-dad. I really don't think Thor respects him after thor2. I think Loki is just making that realization at this moment. This is going to obliterate a huge block between them. Last they spoke of Odin in thor3, Thor was still angry about the nature of Odin's death, but now that that moment of anger has passed, Thor can speak to Odin's faults in a way that can convince Loki that Thor saw them as well.

Loki is not crying anymore. He looks upon Thor with such bewilderment and concern Loki is very, very surprised by all this. Every single one of his walls has come down. He hasn't seen Thor this emotional once in their adult lives that Thor wishes, once more, to hide his despair, but that his brother deserves to be looked in the eye. "Would that I were only a man," he continues. "Would that this were only an occupation of a father being passed to a son, but it is not. It is a wolf at my door, brother, and I must let it in, but I cannot do it without you beside me." This is need. This is what Loki has been looking for. Thor's need for him, laid out bare and confessed. This makes him feel less crazy about his own need.

Loki's brows are pinched, his iridescent eyes this is a private joke to myself bc I am blue-green colorblind wide with honest heartache. He lifts his hand from the wall and Thor lets him go. He feels a touch alight on his temple, between the chevroned scars on his scalp. Oh yeah I think the lines on his scalp are scars, not decorative. It makes sense given his lifestyle. "I did not think it would hurt you so," his brother says in wonderment. He really is didn't know anything about Thor's struggle with being king. last he heard on the subject was the end of thor2 where Thor had expressed it in selfless terms of being worthy and protecting the empire. He hasn't witnessed Thor's revulsion. He touches fingertips to the corners of Thor's eye where his sorrow has gathered but not fallen, and Thor only wishes that his brother could let himself be held. NO HUGS BC ONLY LOKI HAS THE POWER TO MOVE THINGS FORWARD

"You are better made for it than I," Thor tells him as Loki tugs on him and Thor's head falls back down against his brother's throat. Hug Loki hums and lays his cool hand lightly along the back of his skull, stroking contemplatively. Thor allows himself to be pacified, and the shameful, screaming something in his heart quietens for the moment, as it only ever does beneath his brother's hands. It is always Loki's impulse to be Thor's comfort and it is always Thor's to seek comfort from him. Codependency! He sighs. "I need your strength and your wisdom and your friendship, Loki." He fists his fingers into the flanks of Loki's shirt and pulls meaningfully. HUG!! This conversation does not resolve satisfactorily for all the concerns brought up, but that is deliberate. This is how most difficult and strenuous conversations go, where you just find a bit of peace you can agree upon and settle there, grateful. Also because this is kind of just the pattern of Thor and Loki's entire fucking lives. They have personal problems and personal problems but the big ticket concern is always their responsibilities and that tramples its way across everything. It fucking sucks."You asked me if I did not want, and that is it. I want you here with me. I want us to be friends again." Oh nooo that's not what he was asking about...

"We cannot be friends." Omfg the amount of heartbreak right here. Like fuck dude, Loki is already locking himself back into the imperial cage with thor because he wants to be with him, he is already willing to subsume the parts of him that go undiscussed bc thor might not reciprocate, he is ready to give himself over to Asgard and to be whatever use he can be to these people and now Thor wants them to be friends as well? When he already owns his every thought and priority and concern, when he owns the very air in his lungs, he also wants his friendship? Can Loki not keep anything?

Thor looks up. His brother's eyes are wet but he smiles beatifically. "We cannot be friends," he repeats. "I will serve Asgard, I will be your brother, and I will serve you, but even I, poor fool that I am, must keep something for myself. Don't you see?" he says, his voice cracking with a building fervour. "I am as you say that I am: unworthy and ungrateful and the keeper of my own misery. This hurts. Odin was wrong about a lot of things but Loki accepts these as his faults because they are the only way he can explain why nobody seemed to love him. I used to wish that I wasn't, but I am. And I must keep something, or else I shall have nothing at all." His fingers flex unconsciously on the edge of Thor's plate armour and, with a crunching snap, the metal rends beneath them. Loki hisses. I like the idea that non-asgardian armor on aesir bodies may as well just be decorative.

Thor stops him. "Loki, brother," he says, picking up his narrow hand and enfolding it between the both of his. This is a conversation stopper. Loki has hurt himself after all. Thor really does loathe it when Loki is hurt. He could happily live the rest of his life without seeing Loki in pain again. Ironic, he's about to. Loki quakes, on the verge of something, and Thor sympathises even as he doesn't know what it is. Bitch is like a hair's breadth away from just confessing everything He keeps his eyes cast low as he presses their hands together. "It's all right, I understand," he says, even though he does not. "Enough, hm? We are both fools." He shakes him lightly. "That's enough." This is just, peak kindness, peak generosity from Thor. All concern, all his soft attention turned on Loki. If he were wired just a little bit differently, less proud perhaps, less brittle, he might have made it a habit of hurting himself just for these moments

Loki's bruised hand spasms and he almost jerks it back into himself by instinct, but that Thor grasps him gently by the wrist and does not let him go. Wild-eyed, his brother stares at him, uncomprehending, first, and then recognition comes back into him. I think physical pain makes Loki absolutely dissociate. Like I think this is a product of a psyche that is not particularly attached to his physical body in the first place but compounded by whatever physical/psychological stress Thanos/the other put him under between thor1 and avengers1 "Yes," Loki gasps. "I'm sorry. I." His first instinct coming back into his own body is to apologize. Sad boi. His fingers curl within Thor's rough palm, and warmth drifts through the pulses of Thor's blood to have his brother holding his hand again. Emotions. So here's the thing, the way I have established it, Loki experiences his emotions with more clarity while struggling to communicate or act upon them in any meaningful way while Thor struggles to figure out what it exactly it is he is feeling at any given time but feels no compunction about expressing those feelings once they have names. They have always had bad communication. Having a psychic link absolutely helps the fuck out of them.

Thor shakes his head. "I have my own wrongs that I have done, and it has only been these recent years that I have had occasion to think back on them. You are right, you know," he says, smoothing his thumb over the back of his brother's knuckles for emphasis. "I have, in the past, regarded myself too highly, and I saw it as my natural right to trample over those who were less fortunate that I." Thor's blind but he has this beautiful generosity inside of him that takes Loki's breath away. Also, this is growth. Self awareness is growth. Being aware of one's privilege is growth. He's fucking trying but he's still a work in process.

Loki huffs a little breath. "It is not difficult to do when you are the best." Incapable of sincerity, especially when he's being sincere. He wipes at his face with his sleeve and offers to Thor a smile, small and self-deprecating, but sincere -- a delicate branch, newly budded, tentatively extended but an offer of peace nonetheless.

Thor returns his smile. "No, I suppose it isn't, but I am sure that doesn't excuse it. Loki," he says, and it is as if he is finally undoing a weight that has always hung around his neck, "I am sorry."

His brother's expression remains deceptively pleasant. "For what? Be specific," he says again, a flat whisper, either soft or deadly but which refuses to reveal itself to be either. Fun bit of repetition bc we're still talking about the same things lol also notice that asking active questions instead of just assuming shit manages to fucking facilitate better communication? Crazy how that works?

Thor knows; he has known for a while now. His errors were ever small slights, little wrongs, but together they built a wall between them as high as the sky. Bc Thor is beautiful but he is not without significant fault!!!! But now, his brother knocks on the other side, and his humility is a small price to pay to see it torn down. He is ready to be done with it now, here, at the end of the world. "For what I said, just now" he says. "For speaking over you, in years past. For behaving as if you owed me your obedience," he says. "For taking it for granted that you were my brother and," he sighs expansively.

"For never seeing you for yourself, I suppose," he muses. He puts his hand to his brother's shoulder and stands back enough to look Loki in the eye. "You are your own man. Your path is your own to take, and though we may walk together, we do not belong to the same fate." This is ironic bc they do literally belong together, but I do think this is the conversation that needs to happen for them to develop any sort of cognizant and deliberate romantic relationship for the future: Thor relinquishing personal responsibility over Loki's choices and actions and acknowledging that he will still love him regardless of past choices and actions. This is more of a making of peace for the "kings of new Asgard au" than for this particular verse.

"You do not belong to me," he says, watching Loki watch him and knowing that, this time, he has been heard. "You are my brother, but you don't belong to me."

Thor holds his gaze with all the plain equanimity he can summon and releases his brother's hand. He waits for him to draw it back, but Loki only closes his eyes, for one slow moment. When he opens them, they are the color of sunlight passing through a calm ocean and for once, no drowned secrets lie beneath. i like this line. Theming note: I think if Thor is storms then Loki is alternately fire and water (bc he has a changeable nature). I tried to theme their metaphors around this thesis. Writing note: I always try to theme my metaphors appropriately to a character. I find it helps to build the visual language of a character and also helps to keep your shit limited. If you don't put limiters on your visual language, every metaphor is available to you whether or not it contributes to building a compelling image of a character. The problem with writing is the problem of all art in that you can do anything. The expression comes out in what you choose not to do. "You have grown wise," his brother muses. He laughs, and it is a bell-clear sound, beautiful and weightless. He bows his head regally. "Worthy Thor, I am honoured." Incapable of sincerity especially when he's being sincere :(

Thor laughs, his throat thick with relief as Loki steps into him once more. God damn just having somebody take responsibility for his pain is SO FUCKIN MUCH for Loki, even if it isn't the person who caused most of it. It's not reparation he's after at this point, it's just acknowledgement. The fact that Thor can understand that, even if it's not in its entirety just takes so fucking much off of him. He leans his cheek against Thor's shoulder and allows him to take his weight. This is 50000% as much for Loki as it is for Thor. They are capable of giving and receiving comfort from one another. This makes them different from Odin and Frigga. Thor settles his arm around the back of Loki's body, and holds himself so still that he almost stops breathing. "Do you still hate me then?" This is half a joke and half very deadly serious. Thor would probably die if Loki for real hated him

Loki settles into this new posture, his hand still resting lightly in Thor's palm. "I could never hate you," he says easily, as if this were ever plainly evident to anyone who has wished to learn it. "I was angry with you, but I never hated you." God he's stupid just fucking talk to him.

Thor lifts his eyebrows and laughs aloud, surprised. "You have turned over a new leaf. That's more honesty than I've heard from you in aeons, brother." GOD THEY'RE BOTH SO STUPID JUST FUCKING TALK TO EACH OTHER

Loki shrugs. "There's no harm in it now," he says. He turns Thor's hand over and idly traces his fingertip along the tendon between each knuckle. Thor's heart clenches. It was only ever his brother who would touch him like this and Thor cannot remember the last time Loki had touched him. Weird historical intimacy. They were very close once. "There are none now amongst the living who would laugh at me." A pause. "I am sorry about your friends." Thor's fuckin playmates as a child were absolutely brutal to Loki for being "weird" and also so attached to Thor. Thor protected him when he could but Thor wasn't always around. As they got older, the bullying got subtler but they still treated him like he was a joke. Loki learned to be a personality that was emotionally withdrawn and polite and contained as a self defense mechanism. He learned to be vicious. The warriors 3 + sif, Thor's adult friends, were more openly respectful, but still shared sly glances and unspoken mockery. Loki was not their friend.

Thor hums gravely. "So am I." He drops his chin gingerly atop his brother's dark hair and breathes deep of the scent of him. It is familiar and as warming as drink. I've establish in MLIES that Thor takes a huge amount of sense memory in smell. It's one of his more doggish qualities. Also it is deliberate that I don't describe people's scent unless I'm trying to say something about it. I think it's probably from reading too many bad fics where people inexplicably smell like "strawberries and cream and roses" like fuck off lol. Irritating. He sways them together, lightly. "But they each died a warriors' deaths, and when the turning of the world comes and death comes for all of us, I shall see them again in Valhalla and be happy for it." This is the appropriate Aesir attitude toward death. The dead are valorous and glorious and we celebrate them. This is the attitude Thor should have had in MLIES about Loki's death, except Thor lost his goddamn mind about Loki bc Thor was unable to take Loki's death as anything less than the death of his own heart

"Then let us drink to that." Loki ducks beneath his arm and goes to retrieve the bottle. Thor feels the loss but he follows him gladly, still holding his hand. Casual touching has now been unlocked. Loki holds the liquor aloft. "To the turning of the world. To Valhalla," he announces. He drinks and, so close, Thor can see his throat working as he swallows. Are we still doing this game? Yes we are Loki: 3, Thor: 2

When his brother presses the bottle into his hand, Thor looks at him. He says wryly, before he drinks, Loki: 3, Thor: 3 "Loki, we are not going to die for a very long time yet." Haha irony

Loki snorts. "That is optimistic." This is being played as a joke. The pain is supposed to be retrospective. He draws Thor back down onto the widow ledge, and Thor goes with him. Thor decides he can accept the substitute when Loki sits close and pushes them together, shoulder to hip.

"You don't believe that," Thor needles him, knocking him with his elbow. "You haven't changed so much that you would maroon yourself on a doomed ship, if you truly thought it hopeless." Haha. Irony.

Loki re-balances himself and rolls his eyes. "Well I still might leave if it suits me. You said it yourself." He flaps a hand blithely, but the cut of his words is prickly, "I am my own man, after all." This is still joking, this is still play, but the ground for acceptable play is very very small atm. They have both overstepped. Thor by presuming to know Loki (he's not inaccurate, it is the presumption of being known that rubs wrong) and Loki by suggesting abandonment

Thor's lips tighten over his teeth. "Will you?" Something hard and challenging flattens his voice, some sudden thunder, like the sort that breaks upon a fine spring day. "Are you going?"

Loki looks at him levelly but then he sighs. "No," he says peevishly, ducking away, "but I don't see why you can't just play along with it." Loki doesn't prolong the game once he knows he's gone off base. That's also development. He wasn't like that before. He used to draw it out when his jokes caused someone pain

Thor moves the bottle away when Loki reaches for it. Loki frowns at him, annoyed, but Thor holds his gaze, unblinking, until Loki flushes beneath his pallor and looks away again. Thor isn't letting this go. Loki overstepped and apologized and it's now Thor's job to smooth it over and get them back on track but now they're lingering on Loki's vulnerable honesty and Loki feels so fucking naked, he hates feeling naked, fuck. Thor doesn't let him. He catches his brother's face with his palm and turns him, his thumb holding firm upon the hard angle of Loki's jaw. Loki lets himself be turned. His face is hot. Lol how many times is Loki gonna get faked out by that dick down. "I'm finished with playing that game with you, brother," Thor says, all humour gone. It is as if he is doomed to have this same conversation forever. He thinks back to all the times before that he has begged for his brother's constancy is a synonym for fidelity, and, like a mirror reflected back on itself, it is as if he looks endlessly into one image. "I will not grieve you a third time," yes you will bitch your whole damn life is about to become a funeral he says. "Stay or don't, only choose one and do it." That's some fucking ultimatum. Damn. Damn dude. Loki is fully vulnerable right now, peeled right the fuck open. He couldn't lie now even with his fucking words AND Thor is touching him

Loki blinks rapidly. "Do you want me to stay?" He sounds choked and breathless. The only response possible is deflection

Thor releases him. "Of course I want you to stay, I always want you to stay." Exasperated, his hand drifts up toward his crown to sweep in past his hair, only to remember, once it is there, that he has no hair to push back from his face. He has forgotten where and when he is. I don't like this line, I feel like it over explains, but my test audience was confused by the previous line so I added it in for clarity "If it were up to me, you would have never left me in the first place, but I am not your tyrant." I do like this line tho

"No," Loki says softly, his hands twisting together in his lap. Everybody has figured out this meta by this point "No, you are only my brother."

Thor shakes his head and drains the rest of the drink in one swallow. Loki: 3, Thor: 4 "You know, historically, every time we try to talk about this, you cause a great big fuss, we fight, I beat you, and then you leave anyway." He scrapes irritably at his beard. "So do forgive me if I tire of retreading this path again."

"That was before," his brother says. He pulls his knee back to his chest and leans against it, away from Thor. This is not flirting. This is a posture of self protection. His hair spills like ink over his shoulder like this line and he looks at once exhausted and boyish, self-conscious and ancient. "And I will not apologise for it."

Thor rounds on him. "Who's asking you to?" he snaps. Loki does not respond. Thor scoffs. "So, what? Is that it? One last drink for old times’ sake?"

"That's not it."

"Then what is it, Loki?" Damn loki is being cornered. He's been made naked and he's being cornered. If he were in a different part of his life, this is when he would lash out. cause some real fucking ruckus. Stab Thor a little. Maybe jump off bifrost. But he has to be here. This is his last chance. He's out on a ledge now and he either steps forward and Thor will catch him or he will just fall forever

"Here," Loki says, producing a new bottle, amber in colour and heavier than the last. "Drink." Putting off the inevitable. Stalling.

Thor takes it. He rips up the cork and drains the bottle with spiteful obedience. Thor's done putting it off. It burns. "If you're trying to get me drunk so it hurts less in the morning, it's not going to work." Kill me now or let me live forever

"Did it hurt before?" Still stalling. You can feel it though. It's like bile rising up your throat. It's inevitable. It's coming. You can't choose when now you can only choose how.

(This is the same dread of a fated death)

"Of course it bloody hurt, you blistering idiot," Thor spits. He feels fragile, cracking along his edges. Loki is not the only one who has been made naked "I thought you dead, twice. I drank Asgard dry the first time and I simply left after the second." This is as close as we're going to get to talking about Loki's deaths. It's painful for both of them to talk about. Maybe one day they will have the distance and feel safe enough with each other to address it directly. Maybe they never get to.

"I know." Loki slips his hand back into Thor's. It is as much comfort as it is concession, but Thor takes it anyway, pressing tight.

"I know you know." They were the worst times of his life, his world collapsed in upon him with him still trapped inside. He can hardly remember them at all, only in bursts, only in non-specifics, but of course, Loki had not intervened -- indifferent, always, as if Thor and the way his world was ending were specimen in a jar. Loki didn't know. He honestly didn't know. Maybe he should have known, but he didn't. Would he have done something if he knew? Would he? Would he? Thor scrubs his face and holds his palm there over his aching eyes. "Thrice damned, since when are you so solicitous after my feelings." He would pull himself away from his brother's touch, if only he were not a coward. Loki doesn't love him, Thor is reaching for nothing. Loki would not treat him like this if he loved him

Loki leans into him, puts his head again on Thor's shoulder. His touch and voice are faint. Fucker -- loki loves him, he loves him, how can he not know that he loves him "I always care about your feelings, brother. Sometimes I wish I didn't, but I --" He trails off, stops.

Thor waits a beat, and then a scowl forms heavily over his brow. "Is this some new habit of yours, starting sentences and then... " I am calling myself out lol He gestures. When Loki does not look away this time, he urges impatiently, "Well? You what?"

"I cannot seem to disregard your dislike for me." Thor's the one who doesn't love him, where does he get off accusing him of anything--

Thor rolls his eyes. "I've always admired you, Loki, you know that." THOR LOVES HIM SO FUCKING MUCH HOW DOES HE NOT KNOW THIS

"Do I?"

Thor throws up his hands and leans back against the windowglass. "Cleverest man in Asgard!" he exclaims. "Cleverer than our father -- my father," he corrects irritably, this is an important concession -- Thor will concede the wrongs odin has done to loki "yes, all right." He looks at his brother, whose cautious eyes regard him as a that of cornered beast's regarding the hunter. Thor looks at him directly, unyielding. Just fucking talk to him. god. damn. it. "You're strong Loki, and you're brilliant, and you might have been wiser than Odin one day. We all thought it; mother said so all the time. Loki will still accept Frigga as his mother She always said that if I were ever to rule, that there was no better man than you to have at my side, and I thought it to. You have the head for rule, and the heart--" should've just let them marry, losers

Loki shakes his head violently, compulsively. "Not the heart, no. I've never--" He is vibrating, cornered cornered cornered cornered trapped-- his eyes screwed shut, and he does not seem able anymore to choose his own words. "You, you, you're beautiful, you're perfect--" --but what if that's what he wants

"Brother."

"No, you see, I could never see past it, I tried." The set of Loki's face wavers, his pale eyes trapped between two incompatible realities, both truths. (He loves me he loves me not) He looks angry and hopeful, terrified and desperately sad -- snared between belief and doubt. Thor knows that feeling. It is the same feeling caught within his own breast. What if he wants to be owned? "I couldn't envy you for it, so I tried to hate you, but I couldn't. Even when we were apart, even when I thought you lost from me for good, down in that cell." He covers his face with his palms like a child afraid of what's in front of him as if to stopper his own voice, but all he says next it is only muffled instead, "And I could never be happy. All I could ever do was want for things that I couldn't name and couldn't get." It's thor! It's always fuckin been Thor! It's always gonna be

Thor sighs. "I know. Brother, I know." He remembers the devastation that had wrecked him when he thought Loki dead, the way his insides had grown to ice and splintered as Loki had gone cold between his arms. He remembers how Jane's little, lukewarm hands Sarah says this is the fucking sickest burn she's ever heard had brought him up from his knees and he had looked at her as a stranger, comprehending at last that he was in a world of strangers now. His brother was dead and he would never know happiness again. Thor's known. He's known for a while now. He's just been afraid. He's just been a coward. This is the moment he decides to stop being a coward

Loki's eyes search his. Thor doesn't know if he can put to speech what it is his brother is looking for, but he prays that he will find it. See that I love you, see that I want you, see me He chafes Loki's hand in both of his and, lost for words, presses his lips to the back of his own palm. Loki's breath shivers. He whispers, "It is not fair when I've never had room in my heart for anything but you."

When Loki kisses him, it does not feel like a surprise.

The following is meant to be closer to poetry than pornography, but it is still psychic pornography, because I wanna believe that if you're a god there are many different levels upon which you can connect, one of which is physical, one of which is sexual, one of which is psychic/spiritual. This is meant to be literally psychic fwiw. It's physical touch but psychic fucking. This is Loki trying to get some sort of relief while still maintaining a line in the sand.

Thor responds swiftly here you are permitted to feel the sensation of "finally!" along with Thor, sweeping Loki into his lap and holding him there as Loki's vicious mouth yields beneath his. His hands seek skin, and it is given to him freely, gladly; Loki bends to meet him and his clothes part beneath Thor's hands like butter. Loki tastes of quicksilver and of the sun through new leaves, of midwinter firelight and the air after a storm. These are deliberately unquantifiable. I did not want gods to have senses quantifiable to human senses. Thor remembers, now, every touch that has brought them to this, every brotherly assurance, every passing glance, every bruise -- and behind it, always, this bare and incomprehensible yearning.

Loki moans, intimate and open, and the unnameable becomes named, the shame given absolution. The whole of his life snaps suddenly into complete and perfect focus. This has been his monster all along, this clawing want, this unspeakable hunger so constant that it burned at the bottom of his every breath. Unaddressed, unacknowledged its whole long life, it had deformed him. The monster of an unspeakable love lol

As Loki's mouth smears over his cheek, as his light fingers find the seams of their crude, hewn bodies and rend, this is literal; his psychic form is taking apart their physical bodies so that their souls can fuckin touch without interference it feels like standing up after a lifetime spent in a bend; it feels like the first full breath after only ever having sipped on air. Thor knows freedom for the first time he can remember, and the gnawing teeth behind all of his fear and worry and strangling precautions draw back into their ugly heads. The great inviolable question of his soul "why do I feel like I am incomplete?" finds its answer at last: it was Loki. It was only ever Loki.

When he seizes the back of Loki's head and returns him to his mouth, his brother sighs. Thor can feel something stubborn inside of himself give way beneath the hot silk of Loki's skin and the cold marble underneath, literal. I think they are made of the same stuff as Asgard. and then, all at once Thor can feel Loki pouring through him, subtle as smoke, sharp as electricity, Loki is being described in both his and Thor's metaphors now to show that they are becoming joined and when Thor pushes back, Loki opens his soul to him in welcome.

It is elemental, organic, as the way fire consumes or how the heavens turn. It is like every colour bound together into one, like sunlight. Thor can see himself through Loki's eyes, the familiar geography of his features mapped and given beautiful names: the cheekbone by which Loki has measured all other faces; the precise warmth and weight of his hands between which Loki finds his solace and his comfort; his stubborn mouth which Loki has learned for its every curve, its every salacious expression. These are small things, permissable things he has had access to and he keeps them covetously

Thor smashes open the long-kept reservoir of his own stolen inspections, his persistent fascinations, and a flood rises within him of Loki's every aspect which he has held in covetous admiration Thor is utilizing Loki's metaphors: the fine and twining musculature of his neck and arms; the sharp, watchful intelligence behind his eyes; the deft, sinuous migration of his fingers as he weaves his spells. Again, incredibly small, tragically public, accessible, covetous, yearning

Loki holds Thor within himself and Thor knows, psychic fucking knows no tops and bottoms lmao Loki is guiding and Thor is fulfilling, Loki is hosting and Thor is letting himself be consumed. It's equality. all at once, a love so personal as a love of self, glorious as a love of empire, so desperate as a love of air or water or sustenance. Loki lives within all of him and Thor knows now that he lives within Loki as well. They have been half of each other's lives, the whole of the other's hearts, and now with the crude boundaries of their bodies and minds dissolved, Thor knows who he is. He is Loki's. Loki is his. This is truth. Just to know that you are not alone is the greatest relief one can receive, you are loved, you have always been loved.

Loki gasps through his open mouth, sparks igniting in his vision through Thor's eyes. Thor matches him and the both of them tremble beneath the glittering weight that has settled, diaphanous and encompassing over their shoulders. Loki buckles and Thor hides his face into his pulse.

When he catches Loki into his arms, it feels like coming home. And here we deliver on that premise

Thor comes into himself again in pieces. When he opens his eyes, it is difficult to remember how to see again through just his own one eye, how to feel with just his skin. Loki clings to him, draped over his lap, his clothes in ruin, his limbs shivering and soft. They breathe together, as one lung, and Thor cannot stop himself from seeking the white skin of Loki's neck. Ominous His brother moves against him and captures his mouth with his own gasping mouth. His hands spread over Thor's shining arms, caressing, while Thor threads his fingers into Loki's dark, soft hair.

When Loki breaks them apart, it is so gentle that it feels like a promise rather than punishment. I like this line. Thor moans. "Again." "Another!" he's spoiled and entitled but it's being recontextualized here so that it's sexy lol The music is his voice is lost beneath the crush of his desire.

But Loki holds him fast, his panting mouth mere breathes away, only when Thor moves, Loki does not rise to meet him. He shakes his head. "I only wanted to see," he says, drawing a line in the sand, but hey it is just sand as if through a dream. He touches Thor's cheek. His eyes are still shut, and he moves so slowly and clumsily that Thor steals another kiss from him before he can do anything about it.

Thor chuckles. He draws Loki's thumb into his mouth and works the knuckle with his teeth and tongue. Beneath the flickering, golden light, it's not just Loki's color anymore his brother's eyes are nearly black when they open and Thor can hear his naked want calling to his own. Thor grins. "What can I show you, brother?" He shifts a subtle measure and, for a moment, Loki's weight comes off his knees and seats fully into his lap. Damn dude, make it impossible to say no to you, ok nasty

Loki's breath catches. He draws his finger from between Thor's teeth and wets his curving lip. He presses his brow to Thor's, shuddering. His voice crackles as he whispers, "How it might feel to be whole." Loki of wavering convictions that nonetheless hold, can you hold the line here?

"What do you mean?" Thor hums. We know what Loki's talking about here, soul bonded etc, but thor doesn't and hey it's another thing that gets glazed over and hand saved and doesn't get discussed in the moment even tho Loki planned to fucking discuss it His eye drifts open and then shut, and every time he closes it, he can feel the afterimages of Loki's every thought. He reaches out, touches a stray, cold curl of his brother’s building anxiety, and feels it disintegrate into light. Thor tugs on Loki's hands, kisses the hinge of his jaw and a hard coiling knot of it begin to dissolve. Loki protests faintly but he begins to struggle. Thor clamps an arm around his waist. "No, there, sit there a while," Thor insists, putting his bearded cheek against his brother's beating chest and feeling it scratch though Loki's skin. Loki grasps at his forearm. "Stay," Thor says petulantly. "You said you would stay." Thor is being a fuckin child in the way lovers act to gain their lover's indulgence but him literally taking apart Loki's fears is a mainline psychic injection of anti-anxiety meds. This is the best Loki has felt his entire stupid life. You can't blame him for wanting to stay here past the point of practicality

"This is absurd," Loki complains. He shifts on his knees, poorly balanced on the narrow seat. "I am too tall for this."

"I don't care." He touches the back of Loki's hand on his arm and Loki lifts it readily. Thor lines their fingertips together and Loki slips his in between. He wants to put Loki onto his back and learn the taste of his heartbeat through his skin. He wants to touch his hidden thoughts and secret melancholies and learn their every shape and texture. He wants to spread his brother out into pieces, evenly, meticulously, until he is naught but motes of shimmering dust and Thor is the same. This is fighting dirty

"I do not think I could bear it if you tried for decorum right now." Thor lifts his head, smiling, his throat fully bared, and Loki touches it in wonderment, his protests forgotten. Thor would let him hurt him. He doesn't want to. But God. Thor trusts him not to hurt him.

"I would know..." this is the oath of consummation. This is the line he hadn't meant to cross, but now that he's here it just doesn't make sense not to Thor hears his brother murmur, so low that Thor thinks he might have imagined it. But then Loki smiles. "Take me to bed then." He kisses Thor softly. "I am cold."

This second sex scene was not in the original blueprint. I added it bc I wanted Thor to have an opportunity to explicitly give, I wanted an expression of play as expression of trust, and I also wanted the marriage oaths. I ended up writing two separate versions of this, one of which had all 3 elements I was intending, and the one I ended up using, which only had two. Intention has to give way to actual practical usage at some point, so this ended up being largely repetitive of things I've already said because it simply did not suit the mood to go between the previous scene (crying, emotionally fraught) to the next scene (more crying, still emotionally fraught but about different stuff) with this weird sexy interlude in the middle. So I settled with marriage oath and developing Thor. It's not ideal.

Thor lifts him easily, and Loki lets him -- he lets him, god, the things Thor can do now that Loki will let him, now that he is permitted. Things only go forward because loki allows them to go forward! He sets Loki atop the bedclothes and Loki watches him with unadorned hunger as Thor steps back and works deftly at the clasps and buckles of his chestplate.

"Come," he calls quietly when Thor is sufficiently bare, and he receives Thor into his bed as if he has been doing it all his life. Ensconced within the bedsheets, Loki arranges them so that they are half on top of one another. Thor kisses him again and Loki makes small, infuriating, amenable sounds as his hands drift aimlessly over Thor's skin.

But Thor wants more. He would bring Loki to the very brink of his own body, damp-skinned and pleading for Thor's mercy.

Loki groans oh whoops guess who forgot to psychically disconnect and shivers as Thor manoeuvres him beneath his body. He would bend as Thor would bend him; he would unfurl however Thor would unfurl him. Thor knows this. He tastes his brother's anticipation and acquiescence like spilt wine. Already his elegant hands manacle themselves to the crossbars of his headboard at Thor's behest, his flanks and front spread and stretched deliciously for Thor's tasting mouth.

Thor cups his palm beneath the bend of Loki's knee, and lifts it smoothly back. The colours of Loki's mind ignite and darken. "I would know thee by thy body," he says, but it is Loki's oaths that come out. Loki groans. Thor blinks, returns, and slowly grins.

"And I would my body give to thee," Thor finishes. These are a husband and wife's consummation oaths. These are the oaths taken upon marriage. They would both know this, so it wouldn't make sense for me to explain it in the narration. I tried to get that across by elevating the diction into something unnatural. Take what you want from the order in which they're said and the fact that they are said in pieces between the two of them. I mean it to be equality. In the public version of these oaths they would have said both lines together. He waits a moment as the disbelief twists his brother's face and then resolves. Loki looks at him, new marvel in his eyes. Thor has just promised to be his and only his. He has promised to take Loki to be his and only his. All limiters are off. This is Loki's freedom, finally found, finally given He surges suddenly and kisses Thor, and then Thor is awash in his brother's soaring relief, his bottomless joy. His mind comes away lurid with the places of his body that Loki has imagined Thor's hands, his mouth. Loki shuts his eyes as Thor lays him back. He covers his face with his wrists. Too much emotion. Thor is still not allowed to see that. It's too private. "Yes," he breathes. "To thee."

The great yawning pit of his want joins Thor's in the bottom of his stomach, as Thor fits them together and then fits himself inside.

Loki moves with him, pulled by the same tide, moved by the same moon. The geography of Loki's soul opens for him and Thor arrives upon it softly. Loki fills him, envelopes him, and Thor touches through his every thought and sensation as it passes through his grasp. It will never be enough, Thor despairs, though he is not certain if it is his thought or Loki's when it emerges. This was what Loki had meant; this was the danger all along. They've been given a single mouthful of kindness and now must know what it is to live without. I like this line They could each live ten thousand years and spend every minute of it in each other's arms, and it would not be enough.

But Loki shakes his head and opens his dark eyes. "It can be," he says, almost voiceless. "It has to be." He pulls his heels into the small of Thor's back and brings him closer. "I could not bear it otherwise." Classic moribund irony. He winds his fingers into the damp buzz of Thor's hair and pulls him down to him. "Kiss me and let us dwell no more on it," he says, and Thor does as he is told, grateful, overcome, knowing the end but willing for forever. This is at least partially Loki, trying real hard not to think about how he's probably gonna die soon, trying to stop Thor from knowing

Power builds within his body, ready and aching. Outside the window, a swirl of cosmic dust churns, violet explosions flashing through violet clouds. I have meta about this lol He glows beneath his skin, but Loki opens his mouth to him and catches his kiss as if he were tasting rain. I like this line He shudders as he comes, as Thor follows him, as Thor's blue lightning fills him, holds him gently, wreathes them both. Is this somehow more intimate than sex? Maybe so

Loki allows him fold them together again afterwards, allows Thor to arrange them so that they can see each other as they lay together breathing. Thor's pulse is quiet within him even as his heart hums with one harmonious note. The great storm of his life, the one he had never even known he was weathering, has ended. Big sad :( Thor is clean, new, and the long, long past recedes easily beneath the placid waves. He looks into his brother's smooth, flushed face and he sees his future. IRONY

Thor puts his lips to his brother's brow and smiles against his skin. "I adore you," as in worship as in religious terror Loki says in a small voice. His fingers tighten at Thor's waist and Thor lifts his chin so that Loki may tuck himself beneath it. Movement against each other is very easy in this moment. They're completely in synch. They both feel great about that, but only Loki understands the fridge horror

Thor laughs drowsily. "I know that," he says. Thor thinks he means it in the colloquial sense "You don't know how glad it makes me." Loki's dark hair has fallen from its part and it drags in cool coils across Thor's arm. Thor puts his hand through it, sweeping it back and his brother looks up at him, his eyes sober.

"I do," Loki says. His mind, always working, momentarily quietened, moils once more. Thor frowns. He can feel this now. He can feel Loki making himself panic "It is beyond reason, brother. It is more than anything; it is more than life." Placating, Thor touches his cheek and Loki turns into him immediately. This is the beginning of the horror of being known and having what you want. Now there is nothing to stop you. He kisses Thor's palm. "You could skin me like a lamb and my last thought would be how I love you," he says fiercely.

Thor turns his face. "I would not," he says, horrified. "I would never." Loki's brows gain a troubled furrow but he looks away, assenting. Thor strokes the furl with his thumb until Loki relinquishes it. He takes Thor's hand and kisses it once more, then lets it slide back into his hair. Thor strokes him and says more softly, "And what does it matter if it is beyond reason, if I am the same?" This is beyond Thor's concepts of justice. he is still on the axiom of equality. if loki has what Thor has and Thor has what Loki has, then who is being wronged? Loki is, and the wrong is far deeper than Thor has context for

"No, but can't you see?" Loki drops his head into Thor's shoulder again. "This --" he gestures miserably. "This is unnatural." He's referring to the adoration

"How do you mean?" Thor lets him hide. If it makes it easier for him, Thor will hide him from himself. "So we are lovers now," he says and feels Loki's breath hitch. Oh boy just COME RIGHT OUT AND SAY IT LIKE IT'S NOT AT ALL WEIRD it's not weird to Thor, it's just how things should have always been "So what? We share no blood, and even if we did, who would challenge it?" He strokes the line of his back until Loki breathes again, however raggedly. "We are kings of Asgard, brother, what authority reigns higher?" A laugh escapes him on a wet, choked breath and Thor rocks him, lightly, forming himself around the warm, solid, precise weight of him.

"Don't cry," he says. "Don't make yourself miserable. We've found each other now. I love you, and I have wanted you all my life." He kisses his brother's damp cheek. "I was blind not to see it before but I do see it now." Stop stop he's already so happy he can't breathe

Loki pulls back and looks at him. His smile is wistful and pained. "You may say to me every beautiful word that I have ever wished to hear, and it would still be true." Thor isn't just saying this tho. These aren't just sentiments he's gleaned from Loki's mind, said aloud bc he thinks Loki would like to hear them. If Loki even suspected that he were saying these things just to placate him, this would all be over right here, but he's not. He actually means this. He actually is this generous. That might hurt worse. He unwinds himself from Thor's limbs and rises up to his elbows. Thor touches his arm, deploring the loss, as Loki wipes at his face with the backs of his wrists. "It is not the quality of love but the quantity of it," he says bitterly. He pulls at Thor's grip. "Let go," he says, quieter. "When you touch me, I can feel you inside my head." Ey

"Yes," Thor accedes cautiously, but he does it anyway because his brother asks, "and you're inside mine." Loki sits up from the bed in one determined movement and slides off the side. Thor sits up as well, alarmed. "What's the matter?"

His brother is at his closet, and Thor watches as, one at a time, pieces dissolve from their hangers and resolve themselves on Loki's skin. Back to the grind, back to remembering that feeling naked is bad

"Loki." Thor crosses the room to where Loki is standing and catches him by the elbow. A wall of dread goes up in his brother's mind, but Thor pushes past it, back into the centre of him. Loki turns to him, expressions of fear and fury, gratefulness and regret warring in the tiny movements of his brow and lips. Thor kisses him, and as before, Loki returns it without hesitation. this was a mistake. He has no control anymore. It's everything he's ever wanted but he's lost all he's ever had Thor steeps into it every measure of affection he can muster, every tender feeling and assurance. His brother falters, but he steps into him. His hands waver as he slips them around the back of Thor's neck. Oh but what has he gained

"Tell me what is the matter," Thor says again as he pulls his brother back into his arms.

Loki shakes his head. "You don't understand, I never." His hands fist against Thor's shoulders as Thor absently tucks a strand of his dark hair back behind his ear, and he nearly sobs. Loki takes a breath. "You know nothing; you deserve to know," he bites out. "This is not you or me. We are cursed. Odin cursed us." Soul bond but make! It! Cursed!

ALRIGHT, buckle up bitches and bastards bc this is gonna be a long one

So, we all know why sylvie and loki becoming a couple was really bad in terms of like, saying we’ll get representation and then not really doing it and also completely erasing loki’s genderfluid identity (as a fellow genderfluid bisexual, Ow, marvel. ow. i’m hurt.) but i’ve been thinking a lot lately about how it doesn’t really make sense narratively. 

what i mean to say is that loki’s story has always been about family. his mixed feelings about his adoptive family, his realization of his past and his birth family, all the shit with thor, frigga dying, odin dying, the shit with hela, the weird found family of the revengers, etc, etc. loki’s story is about family and not feeling like he belongs to any of it

so why, pray tell, is his show not about that key point to his story? it doesn’t even mention it really. 

here’s how his interactions with the other variants of himself should’ve happened (in season one) 

so basically, he meets sylvie and he’s like she’s like me but everything i ever wanted. she’s more confident in her magic, in her frost giantness (bc he also needs to come to terms with this), in herself. and there’s another way she is that he just can’t quite place.

and she sees him as the variant who never had to suffer from the tva like she did, never had to live life on the run like she did

and y’all know that part where they hold hands and like “fall in love” or whatever. yeah, that’s a confrontation about their genders and their belonging. 

sylvie has her genderfluidity all figured out. she has her jotun origins understood. and yet, she’s still an outcast. and for the first time loki feels a since of belonging. meanwhile, loki was raised with thor in a beautiful palace, for years never had to work a day in his life, and he’s still a miserable loser too. and so they’re both sitting there. scared out of their minds. holding hands. and feeling like they have a family for once. 

that belonging, that familial belonging, is what causes the branches thingy in the timeline thingy.

anyways, plot plot etc plot, and loki meets the other varients. and they have this family. this weird, fucked up little family full of other losers of varying pasts (jotun, aligator, etc) and varying genders and varying ages and. they’re all like him. and sylvie sees it too. and through them they all start learning how to accept that they can be accepted. they can belong and they can belong As They Are. 

i honestly don’t think that loki would be able to healthily romantically love someone until maybe the endish of season too. (then yea, he dates mobius) but the important driving force of this story should’ve been loki accepting his past and present and learning that he can be part of a family and that family can look differently to everyone

also i think there should’ve been a little bit - but not too much - more focus on thor and odin and frigga. bc that’s the source of a lot of loki’s pain

Loki Ep4 Spoilers below (once more bc I just can't help myself, can I?)

It's been a while since I've had a character as interesting as Mobius to analyze and I have no chill. Spoilers start below:

Also some spoilers for WandaVision but it's been months so hopefully y'all have seen it

TL;DR Mobius really trying to connect back with Loki in order to try and bring the TVA down (and also bc "oops, Loki was right, guess I gotta own up to that bitterness") and it works but it hurts so much. Also see: I can't stop watching this scene over and over trying to understand Mobius' subtle actions bc his reaction here is so different than in all other scenes where he's usually calm or trying to delve deep into Loki's mind for information. Now he's just desperate.

Ok so I know I made a post talking about Mobius' jealousy in that interrogation scene but I also want to touch on when he comes back again after seeing the footage from C-20's interrogation scene bc man is so desperate here and I'm crying

Mobius was so hurt last time we saw him, Loki being thrown back into the time cell with Lady Sif, hitting our dear agent with "out of all the liars in this place... you are the biggest... for the [lies] you tell yourself." Mobius has been pushing down all these doubts, hiding all his questions and curiosities of the TVA for a while. He's teased Ravonna, but could never really get anywhere. Then after speaking with Loki about Sylvie, about "you're all variants", Hunter B-15's suspicions, the oddness of C-20's "death" (M:"she was just fine before." R:"well, then she suddenly wasn't fine."). Mobius is finally allowing himself to realize things, to question truly what is going on. (R: "Is that what you wanted to hear?" M: "Yeah, if that's the truth." R: "You've been around Lokis too long.")

In this scene, when he comes back to the time cell for Loki, he's frustrated, he's angry, he's desperate. Everything is a lie. He can't pretend anymore. Loki has bonded with Sylvie (actually caring for another human being without the trauma of Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok) ((I'm begging you, pls let him see a variant of Thor in this series and get to bond again, I miss them)). C-20 is likely pruned and gone forever with no answers. B-15 is getting anxious and unfocused. Ravonna is snapping at him and manipulating him with those long speeches (please, Mobius has heard enough from Loki's videos to know when he's being manipulated by fake sentimental words). He's tired, no longer patient enough for all the little quips-- he just need answers. For once in his "life" at the TVA, he just wants the truth. Something to safely hold to.

He's just put Loki through this timeloop of Lady Sif, of someone from home someone that could've been close to him under different circumstances, someone his brother cared about, kicking him/slapping him/ berating him with "you deserve to be alone, and you always will be." Loki's whole "Sacred Timeline Life" marks him to "always be alone", to finally get close to people before being torn away (whether in his own volition or by someone/something else). But with Loki caring for Sylvie, maybe even loving her, this changes everything for this Loki. He could finally care enough to save someone, to go out of his way in order to help others at his own cost. And Mobius knows this.

He asks again, desperate, pleading, hoping. Loki has to believe in himself, has to love himself enough to think to believe that he deserves a family, love, security from his greatest fear. He has to have changed because if not, then he'll either get pruned or wind up just like Mobius. Either way, gone from existence-- life erased, precious memories of "what if", "what once was", obliterated. He has to believe, or it'll happen again and again and again. To everyone, to the whole universe, unless something someone could do the impossible and shatter all reality.

With Wanda (specifically in WandaVision, final episode end credits), with her searching for her children and Vision, attempting the impossible and blending her realities in order to give them life because she needs them, she loves them. (M: "If you really care about [Sylvie]..."). This threat to the Sacred Timeline, pushing closer and closer to the MCU Multiverse, because they have to, because they want to.

Mobius knows Loki is hurting-- from Lady Sif, from his past, from failing to protect Sylvie on his own, from Mobius not believing him and calling him "just a bad friend". He knows Loki could learn to believe, but he doesn't yet. Only Frigga ever told him she believed in him, he needs to hear it again. He needs to know he deserves love because he is loved. Mobius does, "believe, stupidly" (ep2) that Loki has this potential.

When I first saw this scene in the trailers, I was nervous it would be in the context of Mobius trying to get Loki on the TVA's side, "someone good". But here, this is so much better-- he knows the TVA is lying, is manipulating, is destroying lives. (L: "No one bad is every truly bad, and no one good is ever truly good" ep2 again lol). Loki knows he's not "truly good", that he's hurt people-- whether he planned to or not. But he can still be good. He can still choose to love, to care, to believe.

He can be what he's always wanted, what Frigga promised him, what he's always feared. He can be known, be loved, be safe-- Loki doesn't just fear being alone, he fears people choosing to leave him. That's why the memory of Lady Sif instead of Thor reaching for him on the Rainbow Bridge or Thanos threatening the Asgardian refugees or even Odin trying to explain why he "saved" Loki when he fought Loki's homeland. This memory was casual, simple, unnecessary. But it's always the smallest moments that truly impact us the most-- the slight changes.

When Mobius says this to Loki, he freezes-- he's confused, hesitant, scared. No one tells him this, why is someone telling him this, how can I believe this?

And then:

It's so casual, so simple, so nonchalant. He just wants to reassure Loki that he still cares. He just spent a whole interrogation hounding on Loki for finding love with Sylvie, for changing with her (jealous boi be jealous), for lying to him and betraying him (M: "You don't do partners... unless ofc it benefits you and you intend to betray them at some point"). But now, now he's stopped lying to himself. He knows he cares, that Loki has a chance, that they have to burn this place down. Mobius wants stop this from ever happening again, from someone ever having to go through what Loki's gone through, being told they can never be loved because that's just how the Timeline goes. That a kid would be taken away from their family (probably because Sylvie presents feminine?? Idk, feel like MCU Odin wouldn't be so good with that). He has to reassure Loki, he wants to, because no one should ever feel that way again.

LOOK AT THIS SMILE, LOOK AT HIM HE'S HAPPY. And it was such a small, subtle apology from Mobius but it made all the difference bc he told Loki that he believes in him. And then they walk back out of the time cell, side-by-side, looking at each other. Content, safe, prepared to face the world together. He's no longer alone.

... And then ofc this happens...

*cue my heart shattering* (bless Hiddleston's acting).

The fact that you can even hear the hitch in Mobius' breath as he realizes this is the end of the line for him, that Ravonna knows and there's no going back--he's not making it out of this.

"One last desperate trick from the desperate trickster."

He talks about the jetski, about what his life might have been, he knows this hits Loki, being ripped from your timeline, losing all that potential. More importantly, it gives Loki a reason to fight. A silent, "Don't let this happen again. Don't let them get away with this. Please, remember me, don't let me disappear." But it doesn't work, because the one thing Mobius didn't account for, is that Loki cares about him. That now, the fight drains out of him. They pruned Mobius, ofc they'll get to Loki and Sylvie. They didn't even hesitate. Loki just lost, once again, the only other person who ever told him they believed in him. "You can be whoever, whatever..." "She told me I could do anything..."

Loki is less of a narcissist and more of a person desperate to fill that hole inside-- he's been neglected, cast aside, told he should want this and then never getting it. A "Glorious Purpose" to always hide in the shadows, to cause suffering, to give others a reason to unite against him. But for once, just once he hoped that he didn't have to do it alone-- that he could unite. And then they crushed those beautiful few seconds of hope like it was just another tedious, burdening purpose of the TVA.

On Earth, a prince searches for identity after his world is turned upside-down. And in the darkness, something stirs. Rec: mostly a Loki/Sif pairing story, but there is enough fosterson to give a rec. Even if it wasn’t, I’d still rec it somewhere else. One of the most well-thought out stories I’ve read (part of an amazing series, which contains gratuitous fosterson) with incredible characterizations. Rec: An amazing look at Thor and Jane post-Dark World building their relationship, as well as all the pitfalls and heartache that comes with that. This author really plunges their hands into the nitty gritty problems with Jane and Thor, their cultural differences, their age/lifespan difference, and so on, yet it is still clear how much they love each other and their determination to make it work. | Contains some smut, but nothing very explicit | 92.5k | Complete

Symbiosis: Part II by SteeleHoltingOn: Loki ascends the throne of Jotunheim. He might have been lonely, but for the little hitchhiker in his head. Thor and Jane have their hands full with their daughter, Val, and the demands of Asgard and the Nine Realms. Rec: A lot of Loki, but also copious amounts of married Fosterson. As someone who isn’t always Loki’s biggest fan, especially when it comes to fan portrayals, I can say that this one is very true to canon and is an incredibly interesting read, and is balanced well with Jane and Thor-ness. The political drama is done very well. The plot planning seems meticulous and is absolutely admirable. I still have the same praise for it as its predecessor. | Contains some smut | 41.4k | Complete

One and the Same Thing by MissChrisDaae: Jane Foster is born to the bloodline of the Alchemysts, and the first woman to be inducted into the order. After the murder of her mentor, Jane becomes the first Alchemyst to mix the study of alchemy with that of magic, trying to enhance the art and find a way to avenge him. This is seen as bastardizing the craft, and she is cast out of the order, still working her craft as she wanders the realm. Forbidden from using the title of Alchemyst, Jane instead calls herself Ástkona Óþekktur, a Mistress of the Unknown. On her travels, she picks up an apprentice in Darcy Lewis and the two women meet another very unusual pair: the crown prince, Thor, and his foster brother, Loki, on the run from Amora, the sorceress who murdered Thor’s father and usurped the throne, the same woman who killed Jane’s teacher. Finding common ground, the four agree to join forces in taking down the Enchantress. Even if Jane won’t admit it, she finds herself drawn to the older prince, and Thor seems to be returning her affections, much to the annoyance of Loki, who sees the Ástkona Óþekktur as an unneeded distraction from what matters. If they win the war, there may still be something left to lose. Rec: You can see by the description that this is way AU. Incredibly imaginative, with a good characterization of Jane. | 33k | Complete

The Salt Skin by hariboo: One day Sif walks to the edge of the Bifrost to see compelled to see where Loki had fallen. At the same time Jane is testing a way to open the Bifrost. By accident Sif falls to Earth, what happens after she never would have expected, and then she finds Loki. Post-film. Rec: I can’t believe I haven’t recced this yet. A long, Sif-centric fic that is respectful to fosterson is hard to find, but this one hits all my must haves. Jane and Thor are beautiful idiots, and the outside view of their relationship is great. Very well-written. Loki/Sif is also very prominently featured. | 44.4k | Complete

Off The Grid by Shawn30: As stated by Phil Coulson in 'Agents of Shield’ episode 1-15, "Thor is currently off the grid.” So the question is, where are Thor, Jane, Darcy, and Eric post 'The Dark World’? Rec: This person was one of my FAVORITE fic authors of all time because of their Star Wars fics, and then THEY WRITE A FOSTERSON STORY. I was over the damn moon. There’s a unique take of all the characters, and there’s promise of really great things coming from this story. This fic would be a wise investment. Lost in a World Full of Terrors by psychollama: Inspired by typhoidcandy - “After Darcy attempts to perform one of Loki’s spells, things go awry and she’s sent to another universe. In this medieval-like universe, Loki is King, Thor is banished and living in the forests, and Jane is an arrow wielding rebel. Can Darcy make it home before the real Loki finds out what she did? Or before medieval Loki captures her and either kills her or makes her his slave?” Rec: A different take on a medieval AU. And hotter than you might think. Rec: Okay, holy high heavens this story is well done. The author does BDSM amazingly, and I recommend their other stories, too. Mind the warnings. Magic and being a warrior admittedly become her life so a lot of her side hobbies just branch from those!! Homegirl is on that training ground EVERY DAY with different weapons though she prefers light swords/archery. She does pick up tasks in the healing room under Frigga’s eye as a breech into the world of Magic and it gets her higher in rank to leave her uh....bad home life. Collecting potion ingredients is v peaceful to her.

She picks up Loki’s thirst for knowledge && study tbh, not just magic, really anything is a curiosity to her. Inventing, taking apart, and enchanting magical artifacts become fun thing. When she’s a bit older, training/protecting younger generations becomes her thing too. Also :))) dancing is a beloved thing to her.

The Lady spends miles of time in the palace’s public library && has this fav spot under a willow tree by a pond that she enjoys reading by. She loves, even as an adult, to climb trees!!! Half the time Loki finds her int he library, she’s perched high on the shelves like a cat lol But Knowledge~~~  On Midgard esp, she wants to learn everything about everything so that really gets exciting!

IDK if this counts as a hobby but when she gets bolder in life....pissing off powerful characters with snark....that’s fun for her. She and Odin really throw some hands at each other when she stops idealizing Him/Frigga/Asgard after Loki’s fall. ((Also banter between her & Thanos lmaooo she will remind him at every opportunity that he will never impress Death))

She is ALWAYS someone ppl go to for advice to the point of like....maybe a harmful degree bc she’s afraid of her emotions so she’s spent a lot!! She feels maybe a little used at times. Of course, that gets better with time esp when she & Loki fess up to feelings. The Lady gets esp open with humans. But, she’s kinda this person ppl consider an old soul and they take advantage, maybe without realizing. 💋💋💋💖💖💖

y'know the "shot heard 'round the world" thing from the Battle of Lexington (first battle in American revolution, if you don't know what it is, we have no clue who made the first shot & both sides were telling their troops to not fire. once that shot was fired the battle broke out)? yeah well that was Loki i'm pretty sure

Loki comes to Earth and becomes an Avenger and all but only ever introduces himself as DB Cooper. Thor doesn't ever come to Earth, so everyone just thinks DB Cooper found the secret to not age and just showed up to save people. he disappears for stretches of time & everyone stops being confused bc he was in hiding for decades of course no one's gonna find him (he is actually on Asgard)
