Scattered Through Time
Relationships: Dís/Dís's Wife Rating: G Warnings: bring tissues Author's notes: Time is merciless. It devours every single thing it meets on its way… almost. Somehow, a handful of memories remained. Once, they formed a kaleidoscope of life, full of shapes and colours. Now, they resemble a handful of stained glass pieces scattered on the bleak fabric of the past.
These are the letters between Dís, daughter of Thràin, and her beloved wife, Víli.

My gleam of golden treasure,
I found your gift; snuck into my pocket during our final soft goodbye? You have a skilled hand with the chisel, even if you claim it not so, and I can only hope to match the swell of love I felt when I pulled the stone from my pocket with one that my words may pull from you.
I miss you, I love you.
I will return to you.
I swear it.
D.
***
My Princess,
My betrothed,
It is such an honour to address you with these words. I am touching my betrothal braid and can feel the pattern you plaited as if it was today and not six days ago!
And now we are apart and I will not see you for three more days… It feels like an eternity. And to think we are to be wedded in seven months! If you were here with me, in the deep mines, you would laugh and call me “too impatient for my own good”. Yes, yes, good things are worth waiting for — but you are the best one, a true treasure, and I simply cannot wait until the day we become One before Mahal the Creator.
I still cannot believe my happiness. Or... do I dare to write “our happiness”, my Princess? Our. You and me. A daughter of kings from a legendary kingdom, a descendant of Durin himself, and a simple Broadbeam lass from the mines. A story I would not believe from the greatest of bards, and yet… Sometimes I wake up in the morning and wonder if I am dreaming a beautiful dream… I am dreaming of the way you smile when you look at me, so tenderly…
… of the afternoons we spend together, when I listen to you speaking of yet another problem with that latest contract and your clever solution…
… of the way your hair shines in the firelight, or the way your eyes light up when I show you a new block of carving stone…
… of the softness of your lips and the way your hand feels in mine as we walk through the newly constructed corridors of your city… our city.
And of the way you whisper my name.
I love, adore, and worship every single thing about you, Dís. My perfect princess.
If it is indeed a dream, I refuse to open my eyes! The only thing I wish to do is to take you in my arms and hold you close until the end of days, my beloved. My wife-to-be.
Forever yours,
Víli

“I am not sure about this,” Sami whispered, her hand twitching nervously as she smoothed down her formal dress. “You are a princess.”
“Sure,” Dís replied with a bright smile, “and, with you by my side, I’m even a queen. Or do you think me in any way inferior to my mulish brother?”
Seeing the challenging gleam in those sapphire eyes, Sami had to chuckle despite the debilitating knot in her stomach—after all, it had been the pugnacious resilience of the dam at her side that had first caught her attention and then her heart.
“Evidently not,” she replied soothingly. “Thorin has nothing on you—he’s a mere hill compared to a mountain, he’s but a coin and you’re a treasure…”
Dís threw her head back and laughed so heartily that Sami believed that the very foundations of the Lonely Mountain must have been echoing with her joy.
“We share a complexion though, so you better not say that he’s unattractive,” Dís added with a wink before taking Sami’s shaking hand and encasing it safely in her own broad palm.
“I have never given the king much thought, I must admit,” Sami conceded with a half-hearted shrug.
She had been born on the road and had never known Thorin very well as they had lived exceedingly different lives—as a male dwarf and the heir to a lost throne, he had been preoccupied mainly with the defence and the well-being of his people while Sami had known her own, much more intimate and much less consequential struggles.
Dams were rare and precious—this had been impressed upon her for as long as she could remember and while she had never been interested in warfare, she had dabbled in different crafts in the desperate hope to escape the bane of matrimony by becoming indispensable to some master or another.
Indeed, for reasons she had not been able to fully understand at that time, the mere thought of taking a husband and bearing his children filled her with cold dread, and Sami would have done much to avoid ending up in a situation in which her only choice was to either forfeit her happiness or humiliate her parents in an unforgivable manner.
When she had not shown much talent or exceptional skill in any of the domains she had been looking into, her parents had made a desperate last-ditch effort to find her a place where she would be safe by petitioning the young prince to allow their daughter to become part of his sister’s entourage.
Sami had—until that day—been highly doubtful when it came to the unwavering faith her family had in Mahal; she had found it extremely unlikely that some remote entity would truly take an interest in someone as unimportant as she was, but—upon glimpsing Princess Dís for the first time—she was converted lastingly.
Dís had been and still was the single most beautiful being Sami had ever beheld. Regal in deportment and speech, she had a fiery temperament and a quick wit that had led to many an epic squabble with her esteemed brother.
From the very start, they had gotten along splendidly. Under Dís’ care, Sami slowly started to thaw out of the fearful immobility she had maintained all her life, terrified of disappointing or dishonouring her parents by speaking up at the wrong moment or contradicting the wrong person.
Being of the uncontested royal line of old, Dís had never known such qualms—she was an accomplished diplomat and a charming host, of course, but she didn’t hesitate to make her voice and her opinion heard either.
Moreover, they soon discovered that they shared a feeling of frustration linked to the fact that—as female representatives of their family tree—they were side-lined and pushed aside much too often in favour of counsellors and leeches who did not have the realm’s and the population’s best interest at heart.
From this helpless anger as much as from the many hours spent in companionable study, arose a deep and steady friendship and soon, Dís and Sami relied upon one another unconditionally.
Neither one knew when their complicity had bloomed into something else—more illicit and far more passionate than was conceivable for two well-born ladies—it had been a slow development that endured Dís’ wedding and widowhood, the birth of her sons, and the fateful departure of the company to reconquer Erebor, but, throughout the lonely months of waiting and fretting, they had created a bubble of intimacy and mutual solace that they were now loath to burst.
“This is a bad idea, Dís, my beloved,” Sami tried to reason with the one she had devoted her whole life to. “You are the king’s sister, the heir’s mother—you are the most precious of invaluable dams in the kingdom…and I am but me, a child abandoned to the endless mercy of your house. This cannot be how I repay Durin’s line for their generosity.”
Scoffing, Dís tightened one of her braids. “I have never had a bad idea in my life,” she declared decisively and lifted Sami’s hand to her lips. “I am my own person and I have my own mind.”
“Please,” the other pleaded, her eyes sparkling like gems slumbering at the bottom of a lake. “Remember all the practical jokes we’ve played on your brothers—your intuition is far from flawless.”
“I stand by my actions,” Dís asseverated. “I always do.”
With a deep sigh, Sami allowed herself to let her brow sink against Dís’ shoulder; she loved the princess for her bravery and her self-assured determination, but she was also afraid that her own selfish wish to be with one so far above her own station would end up costing Dís, the king, and their fragile kingdom more than they were able to lose.
The sound of approaching steps echoed from the high walls and Sami jerked upright, staggering back a few paces instinctively—she desperately tried to ignore the hurt flaring in those deep, blue eyes she so loved, telling herself that it was all for the best if they were not caught unawares by a passing patrol or some tardy guests on their way to the feast.
“I have done my duty,” Dís hissed, “and I deserve to live my life the way I want.”
“For the love you bear your brother, in the name of your duty towards your people,” Sami begged under her breath, “do not speak up just yet. The realm is fragile and Thorin needs you by his side—a symbol of hope, of fertility, of a bright future—and we owe him our silence. For now…”
She knew and adored the scowl of impatience spreading across Dís’ beautiful face and so, Sami smiled through the tears threatening to overflow from her burning eyes.
“I will be there, by your side, the way I always have—I will not desert you to let you fulfil a destiny we had almost given up on all alone,” she promised vehemently, tucking the bead Dís had plaited into her hair under a cluster of elaborate braids discreetly. “Let the dust settle, love, and then, we’ll reevaluate our situation.”
“I am sick and tired of their expectations dictating my life!” Dís exclaimed passionately.
Throwing a quick glance down the corridor to make sure that they were indeed alone, Sami leaned forward and pressed a short but passionate kiss onto that displeased moue.
“We’ve played this game for too long not to know the rules, dear,” she then reminded Dís gently. “We cannot force them to change their mind. Don’t do it for them—do it for those you’ve almost lost and who have a right to heal and find their bearings before being ambushed with such potentially distressing news.”
“I shall tell Thorin,” Dís insisted. “I want him to know.”
“You may do that,” Sami agreed, “and I am sure the king would also recommend a path of caution and political astuteness.”
“Of course, he would,” Dís groaned. “He’s the last person who should lecture me on the obligations of wedlock. I am a widow!”
Pressing Dís’ hand tenderly, Sami pulled her down the hallway carefully. “Soon,” she promised, letting go of that hand she had held through their darkest nights as they arrived in front of the doors to the banquet hall.
Demurely, she stepped behind Dís, her head bowed and her eyes glued to the stone floor—at least on the surface, she would slip back into the role for which she had been chosen and trained.
Sami decided to do her best to keep up appearances and buy everyone more time to properly convalesce and grow accustomed to this new world they were going to build.
“Soon,” Dís repeated with much more decisiveness and fire.
The doors swung open, and the noise swelled like an ocean around them.
“Dís, my dear sister,” the king croaked, still leaning heavily on his intricately decorated cane. “And this must be your friend.”

Legacy.
No matter what you are, who you are, the power of your parents legacy has the ability to shape you. . It's how you let it shape you that matters. Do you let it control you? Or do you perhaps control it instead?
That is what Thorin is trying to figure out. Stuck in the cells of Mirkwood. He is truly starting to wonder if he can achieve what he set out to do.
Take back the mountain, kill the dragon Smaug and live to tell the tale…Live to take back his family legacy.
=//=//=//=
“I would not trust Thranduil, the great king, to honor his word should the end of all days be upon us!” Thorin stops walking. Still facing away from Thranduil, he speaks. His voice gets louder and louder as he goes.
“You lack all honor!" He is now shouting. Thorin spins around and points at Thranduil.
"I’ve seen how you treat your friends. We came to you once, starving, homeless, seeking your help, but you turned your back. You turned away from the suffering of my people and the inferno that destroyed us! Imrid amrad ursul!” [ Die a death of flames!]
Thranduil puts his face right in front of Thorin’s.“Do not talk to me of dragon fire. I know its wrath and ruin. I have faced the great serpents of the north.”
As Thranduil speaks, his face contorts, revealing his burns and scars from his past encounters. His left eye is milky and blind. He draws away, and his face returns to normal.
“I warned your grandfather of what his greed would summon, but he would not listen.” Thranduil turns and walks up the winding steps to his throne.
“You are just like him.” he spat, motioning to the guards, who grabbed Thorin and began hauling him toward the dungeons.
“Stay here if you will, and rot. A hundred years is a mere blink in the life of an elf." He plopped down in his chair as Thorin growled at him, smirking as he continued, "I am patient. I can wait.”
Thorin is thrown into a cell beside the other dwarves, and his jailer walks away with a ring of jangling keys.
=//=//=//=
The Good, the bad and the sickness. The minds of his father and grandfather were not healthy ones. Driven mad by the heart and precious gold inside that mountain.
Thorin shuddered, pulling tighter into himself in the corner of the cell. What else was he expecting?
Of course he would fail. He sighed. It's not the first time in his life. He has failed more than one person, including himself in his 154 years. He has failed more than one person in the last 3 days.
=//=//=//=
After the guard walked back up the stairs after locking him in. Thorin listened as Fili spoke loudly through the bars of his"You know Uncle would never approve."
Thorin's eyebrows pinched together, Kili scoff followed his brother's statement quickly, "Uncle doesn't have a place to talk right now."
=//=//=//=
Fi and Ki…Thorin’s head fell back against the wall behind him. Eyes closed in thought. Having children was never on the plan for Thorin. As a spare to the line succession, he never thought much of it. Than came… Azanulbizar and the death of his grandfather, Víli and Ferin.
With his father's disappearance, He had to step up into a position he was unfamiliar with. A position he never saw himself as.
The position of King…and the position of a Father.
Fili and Kili were no more than bairns at the time and Dís was in no shape to raise them alone. Fí was now the heir, with Kí as his spare. There was no other choice but for him to step up and raise them as he thought Ví would want.
He has failed them. He let his head bang once against the wall.
He has failed his sister. Two bangs.
He has failed his brother. Three bangs
He has failed his sister's one. Four bangs.
And worst of all, he failed his one. Five bangs.
All because he couldn’t bear to see her hurt. But by doing so. By saying so. He has hurt her and hurt his sister's sons even worse than if he had said nothing, done nothing.
That was his legacy.
Failure.
Breathing deeply through his nose, Thorin raised his hands to twirl the 2 silver beads, tied back behind his right ear. He smiled slightly at the memory of craving them.
The lion and the wolf.
He had craved them the day each of the princes took their titles in the Blue Mountains. And from that very moment as they both pledged their services as not just royalty but as protectors of the people. Thorin was sure that even if he had children of his own. Fili and Kili would always remain as his first and second heirs. For he couldn’t see them being any different than his own. Though he definitely did not tell them that. Or even showed them the clasps on his braids.
Now especially, he was so ashamed to be near them. What happened at Beorn's house, was not him. It didn't feel like it was him. What kind of example did that leave Fi and Ki? What legacy did that leave them.
What happened with Aranea was not something that he thought was possible for him. It was so uncharacteristically him, could he have gotten so blindsided by his love-…or was it love?
It had to be?
Aranea was his one, he knew that. It couldn't be more obvious. His heart swoons at the mere sound of her name.
So if she is his one. Which he knows. And in his heart is what he feels as love. Then what the hell happened that evening at the shapeshifter's house…

Playing With Fire ~ Chapter Twenty-Four
Dunraven Pub - Modern AU
A/N: After a small wrestling match, I have beaten the story back into submission. I'm sorry for the delay. 😀
Summary: Thorin Durin likes his life just the way it is—his pub is successful, he’s happily playing the field when it comes to women. He wouldn’t change a damn thing about it. At least, not until he meets Leda Andrews, who stops to help him when his car dies on the side of the road.
Leda is new in town, and late for a job interview when she stops to help a guy with his broken down old car. The last thing she expected was for him to be the same guy who owns the pub where she’s applied to be a bartender, never mind to be one of the hottest men she’s ever seen.
Sparks fly, and while Leda’s got a few ground rules that Thorin is more than willing to abide by, neither one of them expected their fling to turn into anything more serious, or that they would be faced with a situation neither one is prepared for. So, what happens when a no-strings-attached affair teeters on becoming the real thing…
Summary: Christmas morning comes and Thorin has another surprise for Leda

The soft kiss against her nape made her shiver. Her hair spilled over her shoulder and Thorin’s beard tickled her ear as he whispered, “You should get up, amrâlimê. I think Santa Claus came while we were sleeping.”
She smiled, snuggling back against his warm chest. “I know he did before he went to sleep last night.”
“I’m pretty sure his Mrs. Claus did as well, but that’s neither here nor there.”
“Mrs. Claus?” She opened her eyes and peered up at him.
“Well, more or less.” Thorin smiled down at her. “It snowed last night, too. First white Christmas we’ve had in years.”
“Really?” She rose to her knees, leaning against the headboard as she peered out the window. Sure enough, a blanket of white covered everything as far as she could see—lawns, trees, shrubs—it was all as tranquil and pristine as a Christmas card.
The bed creaked softly as Thorin shifted and a moment later, she shivered at the soft sweep of his lips along the curve of her neck. “Thorin…”
“What, mesmel?” he murmured back, his fingers skimming along her nape as he gathered her hair in one hand and gently tugged.
She let her head loll to her right, another shiver tickling along her skin. “That feels nice…”
“It’s supposed to.” He crept higher along her neck, toward her ear, and slid an arm about her waist, tightening it to pull her against him.
Her eyes grew heavy-lidded, so she let them slide shut and savored every delicious sensation he sent swirling through her. No matter how many times he touched her, she still shivered beneath it, and she would not be amazed at how gentle a man his size could actually be.
He swept a kiss back down now, and along her shoulder, nipping her gently before he said, “Let’s go see what Santa brought you, shall we?”
“Thorin.”
“What?” He drew away and moved to the edge of the bed to rise.
“What Santa brought me?”
“You think he didn't bring you anything?”
“He never has.”
He had his black sweatpants halfway up when she said this, and paused, lifting his head to meet her gaze. “Really?”
“Do you think I make up the stories about my childhood?”
“Of course not, but,” he drew them up over his hips and tightened the drawstring, “no Christmas presents?”
“I had them. But not from Santa.” She slid to the same edge, but just sat there, her legs dangling over the side. “We didn’t have a lot of money, but there were Christmas gifts. It's just… nothing was from Santa because my mother explained that Santa…”
She let her voice trail off as she realized she didn't want to share the story. So much of her past, of her childhood especially, had been damaged and scarred and refused to heal entirely. The thoughts, when they broke through, troubled her even more now, since finding out she was pregnant. They also steeled her resolve that this baby would never know anything but unconditional love, that he or she would never find themselves wishing they’d just never been born, as she quite often had. It never ceased to amaze her when she went to friend’s house and saw that not all parents saw their children as a burden, when she’d spend a vacation with this family or that one and saw how they all included her as if she was one of their own. She remembered a week in Florida with her college roommate Trina and Trina’s family, when the time came to return to New Jersey, how Trina’s mother grabbed her in a bear hug and reminded her she was welcome to come back any time, with or without Trina. Her mother just liked her, liked having her around.
She didn't want to share the memory that was as embarrassing as it was pathetic. But, Thorin crouched before her, a hand on her knee. “What did she tell you?”
“Thorin, please… don’t…”
“Leda, what was it?”
She shook her head. “I don’t want to think about her. Not today.”
“That good, huh?”
She gazed into his tranquil blue eyes and shook her head. “She said that Santa didn't come to our house because I always gave her so much trouble that he skipped us.”
The hand on her knee tightened and the tranquility in his eyes faded. “Are you kidding me?”
She shook her head. “Why would I?”
“Leda, your mother… I think I do want to meet her now. I have a few things I’d like to say to her.”
“And that’s why I’m keeping the two of you far away from one another.” She curved her hand against his cheek, his beard softly scratchy against her fingers. “Don’t worry, I promise, this baby will never hear anything like what my mother said to me.”
“I don’t worry about that.” His voice was a soft growl. “You’re going to be a good mother, Leda. I’ve no doubt about that at all and this kid is never going to question for one moment whether or not he or she was wanted.”
“I hope so. It’s a horrible feeling, knowing your own mother thought you were a mistake.”
“This is anything but a mistake,” he assured her, rocking back and tugging her hand at the same time to draw her up with him. “Even if it didn't entirely seem that way at the time.”
As he spoke, he pulled her into his arms, tugged her flush to his chest, and added, “Do you want to know if we’re having a boy or girl?”
She slid her arms about his waist, leaning her chin against his chest as she peered up at him. “I don’t know. Kind of. Do you?”
“I don’t know. Kind of. It would make choosing a name a little easier.”
“Thorin if he’s a boy?”
“Oh, Mahal, no. Why would I do that?”
“He’d be your son.”
“Well, yeah, but I don’t want him having my name. I’d rather he have his own.”
“You’re not named for your father?”
He shook his head. “No. My father’s name was Thráin. His father’s name was Thrór. We don’t name our sons after ourselves in my family and I have no desire to break with that tradition. Junior, if he is a junior, gets his own name.”
Leda sighed softly, turning to lay her head against his chest. “I cannot even think about that now, Thorin. We have so much to do.”
“Didn’t I say that same thing not too long ago, and you told me I was getting ahead of myself?”
“Thorin, I was like five minutes pregnant then. Now look.” She pulled out of his arms and tugged her camisole snug over her rounding stomach. “I’ve got a gut.”
“I like it,” he told her, his hand coming to rest against the curve. His thumb swept lightly up, then down.
“You like it because you did this. It appeals to your male pride.”
“Is that what you think? Because that’s not why I like it.” He brought his hand from her stomach and curved it, along with his other, against her cheeks. Gently tilting her face to his, he said, “For you, this has been real for a while. But for me? This is how it becomes real. I mean, it first became real when I heard the heartbeat. But this? This is even more concrete. And I know I got the better end of the deal, but this is pretty fucking amazing to see.”
She couldn’t hold back her smile. “You’re gushing, you know.”
“I know. I should hand in my man card, I guess.”
“Why? I think it’s nice. Men should be allowed to be openly awed at what we women can do because we women are awesome.”
He let out a laugh, wrapping her in his arms once more. “Yeah, you have your moments. Now, do you want to see what Santa brought you or not?”
“Yes.”
“Then, let’s go.”
“Let me put on pants, first.” She crossed to the chair to grab her discarded black Rutgers sweatpants and hoodie and tugged them on, then followed him down into the living room. At the foot of the staircase, she paused. This was a scene out of a corny Hallmark Christmas movie and not one she’d ever thought she’d experience in real life. A fire already crackled softly on the hearth, the tree was aglow with lights, the ornaments she and Thorin had hung on the branches catching the colors to bounce off toward one another. A far cry from the Charlie Brown tree her mother kept in the motel’s office, for sure.
“Santa built a fire?” she asked, leaning against the carved wooden post at the foot of the stairs.
“Santa wanted you to be warm when you came down.”
“Santa thinks of everything.”
Thorin shrugged “He tries. Come on, I think he left a few things for you.”
“Thorin.”
He peered over his shoulder at her and winked. “Come on.”
She joined him at that tree and he crouched to paw through a small pile of wrapped gifts. She sank to the floor and reached for one. “Looks like Santa brought a few things for you, too.”
“When did he have the chance?”
“Probably when you fell asleep.” She pressed it toward him. “Open it.”
He shifted to sit as well, passing the one in his hand to her before accepting the one she held out. “Same.”
She took it. “I will, but you first.”
“Fair enough.” He peeled off the paper and opened the box, and she bit at the cuticle of her left thumb as he just stared down into the box for a long moment. Then, he lifted out the heavy wooden plaque embossed with the same image as the one he’d had tattooed across his chest, arm and shoulder, against a shield of white, blue, and gold, with gilt edging about all of it. “Leda… this is amazing.”
“I thought you might like to put up your family crest, maybe at the Dunraven, or maybe here. Wherever. I just thought it would be something you’d like.”
“No, I do. I love it. It’s…” He set the plaque on his thigh and shook his sleep-messy hair out of his face. “I… no one has ever put this much thought into a gift for me, Leda. It’s usually cologne. Or something like that. But this… this is… damn.”
She handed him another gift. “I certainly don’t want to let you down.”
He opened it and laughed at the bottle of Prada Sport. “This is more like it.” He looked over at her, his eyes soft as he added, “I love you.”
Leaning her head against his shoulder, she sighed softly. “I love you, too, Thorin.”
****
She frowned at her reflection in the mirror on the inside of the closet door. The only thing that fit her now were her leggings and she was tired of leggings. Turning sideways, she lifted the dark gray sweater she’d chosen. Definitely too round for anything with a zipper and button now.
“What am I going to look like when I’m six months, seven months along?” she muttered, her hand curving of its own against her lower stomach.
“Are you asking me or talking to yourself?”
She peered around the door at Thorin and her scowl darkened. He looked positively edible in black trousers and a cream-colored Irish fisherman’s pattern sweater with the sleeves pushed over his thick forearms. On his left wrist, he wore an elegant stainless steel watch and on his right, a bracelet of braided black leather and silver that she’d given him that morning.
“I’m talking to myself, actually. Do I look all right?”
“You look fine. Why?”
“I just… I feel huge and like nothing looks right on me.”
“That looks great on you. Honest. I’d tell you if I didn't think so.” He caught her by the hand to draw her away from the mirror. “Come here a second, there’s one more thing I wanted to give you.”
He sounded so serious, it made her heart beat a little faster. “What is it?”
She closed the closet door with her free hand, then turned to see him holding out a small box. Her mouth went dry and she wasn’t sure if excitement or panic made her belly dance with the beating wings of a thousand butterflies let loose.
“I know you said one life change at a time,” he said softly, a slight smile playing at his lips, “but…”
“But?”
He met her gaze, his eyes soft and tender. “Do you remember the night we went to Mandy’s, the night we told everyone about us? You asked me about my braids and why I wear them.”
She nodded. “I do. You said it was a custom, but we got interrupted and never finished the conversation.”
“It is a custom. In Erebor, the only people who are allowed to touch a man’s hair are ones he has a close relationship with. As a boy, it might be a mother or sister. As a man, it is reserved only for a woman with whom he is intimately close to—it signifies a courtship between a couple.”
As he spoke, he opened the box and lifted out a small cube. “This was crafted for me when I was born, to be put aside until the time came when I found my One.”
Her heart beat a little faster at the seriousness in his voice. “Your—your One?”
He nodded. “It sounds old-fashioned, but yeah. The idea was when I finally found the woman I wanted to marry, this would be a symbol of our courtship and a way of letting everyone else know she was betrothed, for lack of a better word, to me. And before you freak out, it’s not a promise of marriage and this isn’t a proposal. But I was hoping you’d allow me the honor of braiding this into your hair, just as a symbol that you’re mine.”
She smiled. “So… it’s the Ereborian equivalent to giving a girl your ID bracelet? It means we’re going steady?”
“Something like that,” he replied with a chuckle. “So, will you?”
“You want me to be your girl?”
“Leda.”
She pressed her lips together as embarrassed heat shot through her. “I’m sorry, Thorin. I wasn’t trying to make fun of it or you. And yes, of course,” she nodded, “I’d love you to do that.”
“I don’t have to, if you—”
“No, Thorin, please,” she touched his wrist lightly, “I would love it. Don’t mind me, I’m being a moody bitch tonight and I shouldn’t be.”
He stepped closer and set the box on the dresser. She held out her hand for him to tip the cube into. It was small, but solid and almost heavy for its size. It had symbols etched into th sides—no, not symbols, but Ereborian letters, for they looked just like the letters inked across this chest and shoulder.
She looked up to find him gazing at her with an intensity she didn’t often see and that made her even more sorry she’d tried to tease him about it. This was obviously a custom that was very serious for him, and she wanted to kick herself for making light of it. “It’s beautiful, Thorin. What does it say?”
He caught it between his thumb and forefinger to lift, and squinted as he slowly rotated it.”‘Atmelê nalish.”
“What does that mean?”
“My soul, forever.”
He set it back in her palm and her eyes stung as she looked down at it once more. It astounded her, the way such words fell almost easily from his lips. To look at him, one would be hard pressed to believe there was a romantic or sentimental bone in his body, as he looked more like a biker than a romantic.
And yet, words like this did fall from his lips—in both English and khuzdul—and she smiled as she said, “Thorin…”
“You are, you know. I have never felt for any other woman what I feel for you, what I have felt for you since before you even became pregnant. I wasn’t lying when I told you that I completely fell for you the night you spent with me. That was night I fell in love with you, Leda. And I am yours now. Nalish.”
Her eyes stung worse now as she met his, and her throat tightened to the point where she didn't think she could speak. Still, she tried to clear the lump from it as she said, “That night was the most scared I’d been in a long time because I knew I was starting to feel something for you and I thought you would run if I admitted it to you. Or you’d laugh at me because I had all the rules and I broke every one of them.”
“First, I would never laugh at you. Second, I thoroughly enjoyed breaking each and every one of those rules with you. And third? I’m not going anywhere. You’re stuck with me, Motorcycle Girl, whether you ever agree to marry me or not.”
Curving her hand against his furred cheek, she let her thumb sweep lightly along his cheekbone. “I don’t mind being stuck with you, Mustang Boy. Besides, it was fun breaking them, wasn’t it?”
“It absolutely was.” His fingers skimmed along her left temple, down over her hair. “Here? For the braid, I mean.”
“There is fine.”
His eyes softened as he went to work carefully plaiting the section he held. “Be patient with me, mesmel,” he murmured with a hint of a smile. “I’ve never done this before and I’m a little nervous over it.”
“Nervous? Don’t be. You’re doing fine and I’m not impatient.”
He winked and continued braiding and a few minutes later, murmured, “Hand me the rune?”
She did and he wove it into the braid, then secured it and when he stepped back, he said, “There is no getting away from me now, amrâlimê.”
“Like I’d even be dumb enough to try. I know a good thing when I see one.” She slid her arms about his waist and pushed up onto her toes to brush his lips with hers. “And we should probably go before we’re late.”
Leda’s stomach knotted as Thorin eased the Mustang to a stop behind a black Ford F-150 pickup truck.
It must have shown on her face because as he pulled the emergency brake, he said, “You okay? You look like someone just walked over your grave.”
Sinking back into her seat, she looked over at him. “How do you think everyone will react when we tell them about the baby?”
He rested his wrist against the top of the steering wheel, his long finger dangling over the side of it. “I don’t know, to be honest.”
“Oh.” The knots worsened. She had been so certain he’d tell her she had nothing to worry about, that they would all be thrilled to learn the news. To hear him voice uncertainty made her stomach bubble even worse and her heart beat erratically and made her not want to get out of the car.
“If I tell you something,” he said, staring through the windshield at the snow whirling past it, “do you promise not get mad?”
Well, that made everything exponentially worse. “What?”
“You have to promise first.”
“Thorin, I’m really not in the mood at the moment.” She swallowed hard. “Just say it.”
“Dís knows.”As he spoke, he looked over at her and winced. “I bumped into her yesterday at Sephora and I might have let it slip.”
“Thorin.”
“I know, I didn’t mean to do it, but she asked me if I’d gotten you an engagement ring for Christmas and when I said no, I might have also said we needed to get through one life changing event at a time. Unfortunately for me, she isn’t stupid and knew something was up and it didn't take much for her to guess what that something might be.”
“And what did she say?”
His smile put her nerves to rest. “She tried to crush me in a bear hug. Relax, mesmel, they’ll all be fine with it. A little shocked, probably, and I’ll take some grief from Frerin and Fíli and Kíli, but who cares?”
With that, he leaned over and brushed her lips with his. “So, don’t worry and just enjoy today, okay?”
“Okay.” She took a deep breath and pushed open her door to step out into the cold. The frosty sent of snow hung heavy in the air, flakes swirled playfully past their faces and all along the street, houses were lit by bright, festive colored lights. Frerin’s house had white fairy lights strung along the eaves, and the two evergreen trees twinkled with multicolor lights, some of which blinked at intervals. The front door had been wrapped in embossed green foil paper and adorned with a huge red velvet bow and as Thorin pushed it open, the warm scents of cinnamon and bayberry rolled out to greet them.
“Anyone home?” he called, reaching back to lace his fingers with Leda’s, the large bag bearing gifts for his family in his other hand.
“Merry Christmas!” Frerin’s voice boomed across the living room. “Nice of you to join us.” He crossed over to them, smiling as he added, “It’s good to see you again, Leda. I can’t believe you’re still wasting your time with this clown.”
Leda smiled, her fingers tightening about Thorin’s. “He's really quite lovable, you know.”
“I’ll take your word for it. Somehow, I think he’s not nearly as grouchy around you.”
“Bite me, wiseness,” Thorin growled with a grin, shoving the gift bag at him. “Go put these under your tree, if it’s not too much trouble.”
“Ahh… festive as ever. Come on in. What can I get you to drink, Leda? Wine? Beer? Something stronger?”
“Water’s fine, actually.”
“Water it is.” Frerin smiled. “What about you, Thorin?”
Now it was Thorin’s turn to tighten his fingers about hers as they made their way through the kitchen and into the sunken family room. “I’ll just have whatever you’ve got lying around.”
“Oh, that helps.”
Everyone was already in the family room, a basketball game on the television going ignored as everyone talked over it. Laughter rang out, Kíli shoved his brother over something, and when Dís looked up, Leda’s heart almost stopped at the blazing warmth in her eyes.
“Merry Christmas!” Dís called as she rose from the sofa and came over to hug first Thorin and then Leda. “It’s so good to see you again, Leda. How are you?”
“Dís.”
She narrowed her eyes at Thorin’s low growl. “Oh, hush, you grump. I haven’t seen her in a while, is all.”
“I’m fine and it’s fine, Thorin.” Leda elbowed him gently. “And Merry Christmas, Dís. It’s great to see you again.”
More greetings were exchanged and this time, as she settled next to Thorin on the sofa, Frerin returned with drinks on an actual tray, which he set on the coffee table to hand out. Thorin draped an arm about her shoulders and she smiled as he pressed a kiss into the top of her head and whispered, “Shall we?”
She peered up at him. “Now?”
“Sure. Everyone’s here.”
“We can.”
Dís smiled. “Thorin?”
He looked over at his sister. “What?”
“Nothing.”
Frerin looked from Dís to Thorin and back. “What’s going on?”
Toni came into the room from the kitchen. “Dinner will be ready in about half an—” she paused, looking at Frerin, then Dís, and then Thorin—“what’s going on?”
Thorin slowly sat forward. “Since we’re all together, and since I now have permission to tell people—” Leda almost melted at the smile he offered her—“I just thought you should know that Leda and I are having a baby together. In July.”
Leda braced herself for the eruption and it was a good thing, for she found herself surrounded by his family, by well-wishes and congratulations, while Thorin did indeed take quite a bit of ribbing from his brother and nephews.
As Frerin insisted they all do a shot at the bar in far corner, Dís came over to sink onto the edge of the coffee table across from Leda. She reached over to take both of Leda’s hands. “I’m so happy for the both of you.”
“Thank you. Thorin’s wanted to tell everyone almost from the moment I found out, but… I wanted to wait.”
“Oh, absolutely,” Dís nodded. Then, her eyes narrowed and for a moment, Leda thought she’d said something wrong.
But then, Dis leaned forward and caught the long braid that hung just before Leda’s left ear. “Leda, when did you do this?”
“Thorin did it this afternoon. Why?”
“It’s… has he told you anything about our family?”
“Of course he has,” she fought the urge to sit back, to pull her hair from Dís’ grasp, “he’s told me all of it. Why?”
“Then you know what this signifies.”
Toni smiled. “Dís, I’m sure Thorin explained it, just as Frerin explained it to me all those years ago.”
“But you don’t wear yours any longer,” Dís said without looking at her sister in law.
“No, I don’t. And I haven’t for a long time. But that’s neither here nor there.” Toni looked over at Leda and smiled. “And we won’t discuss that right now. We’re celebrating a new life and not discussing the end of an old one.”
Leda looked from Toni to Dís and back. “Have I missed something?”
“No.” Toni shook her head. “And I think it’s wonderful that Thorin did this. I knew there was something different about you when he brought you here for Fíli’s birthday. You’re his One.”
“That’s what he said.” Leda glanced over at the men around the wet bar in the corner. Thorin was behind the bar, of course, and when he looked over and winked, she couldn’t hold back her smile. “He explained that it had been made for him when he was born?”
“It was tradition in our family,” Dís said with a nod. “And none of us ever thought Thorin would give it any woman.”
Leda reached up to gently brush her fingertip along the cool silver. The braid was narrowed and fairly smooth, and a bit heavy at first, but as the afternoon wore on, she’d gotten accustomed to it. “Really?”
Dís nodded. “I’ve never seen him like this, Leda. And I’m so happy for you both. And… I know this isn’t the same thing as his proposing to you, but I still want to welcome you into our family because whether or not you two do end up married, you are family.”
Leda’s throat tightened as she looked from Dís to Toni and back, and her eyes stung as she said, “You have no idea how nice that is to hear. Thank you.”
Dís leaned over and embraced her. Toni did as well and for the first time in her life, Leda actually felt like part of a family.
And it was a wonderful feeling.

Hey Fellowship of the Fics! Please welcome @guardianofrivendell !! 👏🥳 GOR decided to share her thoughts and impressions on her fic: The Odd Ones Out.
Question 1: Did you have a plan for this story and did it stick well to that plan?
For this fic I had a plan and I stuck to it until the end. Which is very rare for me, usually I have like half a plan or plot in my head (or just one line of dialogue I really want to use or one scene) and I just go with the flow and see where my writing takes me. But for this one, the introduction story of my OC Tullaina, I had everything figured out.
Question 2: What scene are you most proud of and why?
The interaction between Dís, Kíli and Tullaina. It flows so well, and I was able to write it exactly as I pictured it in my head. Again, highly exceptional in my case.
I love writing Dís as a mother figure who will drop everything as soon as she sees you're in distress or need help, will give you the best advice but is not afraid to whoop your derrière if you didn't wash your hands before dinner. You know the type :)
Question 3: Which character was your favorite to write in this fic and why?
Kíli! I always love to write the Durin princes, and I grab any chance I get to write Kíli as the cheeky little bastard - with a pure heart of gold of course - that he is. This story has a younger Kíli in it, but he already has the cheeky attitude and the heart of gold.
Question 4: What are 3 "hidden" headcanons or facts that you want your readers to know about this story?
- I got a few requests to write a sequel for this one, because they want to know what happens when Tullaina meets Fíli for the first time (her future love interest). I'm not planning on writing this as a separate fic, but I do mention their first meeting in one of my upcoming fics.
- The story of how they met changes every time Kíli tells it: the number of bullies increases,  his act of chivalry is exaggerated, their injuries gets worse, ...Tullaina doesn't even bother to correct him, she will stand next to him and nod with a very serious face if people look at her for confirmation
- I almost wrote Fíli into this one as well, him being at home with Dís when the two trouble makers arrive. But I changed that because I wanted the story to focus on the friendship between Kíli and Tullaina. I have plenty of other fics where the focus is more on the developing relationship between Fili and Tullaina.
Question 5: If you were to give this fic an alternate title, what would it be?
Hmm... That's a tricky question, because it always had the title The Odd Ones Out' from the start. Maybe just "Kidizbuhâ" (friendship), because I like to use Khuzdul whenever I can, the fic is all about friendship and the fic opens with this word.
If you haven’t read this story yet, go back up to the top and be sure to click the link. Also if you haven’t seen GOR’s works before, here are some other fics that she has done that are worth checking out as well:
"The Lower Fields" (Teen Fili x Tullaina)
"Slippery When Wet" (Fili x Tullaina on the quest)
"Broken Promises" (angst with Fili suffering from dragon sickness, also with Tullaina)
If you would like to get you and your story featured in Monday Mentions, please click the Application Link! If you have any questions/concerns with the form, please feel free to leave an ask or DM one of us! Questions will be updated each month so repeat writers and stories are welcome. New writers will be prioritized.

Kili had not stopped grinning since learning that dwarves from the Blue Mountains were approaching Erebor, including his mother. Balin couldn’t help but smile at the sight. The last few weeks had been hard on both him and Thorin, especially after losing Fili. It would do them both some good to see Lady Dís after such a long time.
Dwarves were already gathering at the gate to welcome their kin, including the company. They were excitedly talking to one another in anticipation.
“I can’t wait to see everyone!” Dori said. “It’s been too long.”
“I hope they didn’t have many travels on the way,” Ori said.
“Nonsense!” Gloin replied. “Long as they have warriors with them, they’ll be just fine. We were, and not all of us are soldiers.”
The company laughed at his words. Behind them, Balin heard someone call for Thorin’s attention. Balin smiled while Thorin sighed. A king’s work was never done. Thorin excused himself to see what was needed in the last minute arrangements. Balin watched him go before turning his attention back to the company. Tauriel had joined them and was being greeted by Kili.
“I heard we were receiving some important guests,” she said after offering her greetings to the others.
“We are,” Kili said. “Our kin from the Blue Mountains. My mother included.” He took Tauriel’s hand in his. “I wish for you to meet her, Tauriel.”
Tauriel smiled at him.
“I would be honored.”
“Perhaps we should tell her stories of your recklessness,” Oreliell proposed in a teasing tone. “If I recall correctly, there were quite a number of instances along our travels.”
“She’s got you there, lad,” Dwalin chuckled.
Kili stuttered before looking away in embarrassment while the others laughed. Balin looked up at the elves.
“I am happy that you all chose to join us,” he said.
They all smiled in response.
“We wouldn’t miss it,” Oreliell said.
As the company talked amongst themselves, Balin turned his attention specifically to Oreliell.
“How are you faring today, lass?” he asked. “I hope your wounds are healing nicely?”
“They are,” she said. “Though the process has been tedious, Vedis and Tauriel have been a great help. I should be back to my normal state soon.”
“That is wonderful to hear. You were quite lucky.”
He noticed that her gaze darted toward Thorin.
“Yes, I was. Things could have been worse.”
Balin stepped closer to her and lowered his voice.
“You should try to speak with him, lass,” he said. “You know as well as I that Thorin is not always one for words, but he wants to try. He misses you a great deal.”
She gave a small smile.
“I miss him as well, Balin. We will speak when time permits.”
Balin could do nothing but nod.
Thorin called Kili to his side, causing the prince to move forward. The dwarves from the Blue Mountains were finally reaching the gate. Balin recognized many faces from their old home. He could see the tears in the eyes of the elder dwarves and awe in the eyes of the younger ones. Many of these dwarves had never been to Erebor, or were too young to remember its glory properly. Balin also knew that this was not nearly everyone, as many wanted to remain in the Blue Mountains where they had established homes and businesses or were simply in no condition to travel, at least until spring came.
As the travelers made their way inside, Balin saw a familiar dwarrowdam on a pony. Her near black hair and blue overcoat made her standout. She dismounted with an elegance only few dwarves had and handed the reins off to someone behind her with a smile of thanks. Then, she made her way forward.
“That is Kili’s mother?” Tauriel asked quietly.
“Aye,” Balin said. “That is Lady Dís.” He watched fondly as the woman embraced Kili tightly. “She is very well respected among Durin's Folk. When Thorin was gone searching for Thrain, he left her to watch over our people.”
“Few ever dared to challenge her,” Dwalin added. “She can be just as stubborn as Thorin, but she’s also very kind. She cares deeply for her kin.”
They all watched as she finally released her son so that she could hug her brother. The company began to disperse, wandering off to welcome their friends and family. Balin and Dwalin chose to stay by the elves and wait. Minutes later, Thorin gestured in their direction. Dís looked their way with a curious expression but her smile never disappeared. Kili began walking first, leading his mother and uncle toward them.
“Balin, Dwalin,” Dis greeted. “It is wonderful to see you again.”
The sons of Fundin bowed their heads to her.
“Likewise, princess,” Dwalin said.
Kili put his hand on Dís’s shoulder and smiled.
“Mother, I want to introduce you to three very important people: Oreliell, Vedis, and Tauriel.” Each woman bowed their head at their name. “They were of great help to us on our quest.”
“We might not have made it without their help,” Balin said.
Dís turned to fully face the elves.
“Thank you,” she said. “I cannot begin to imagine how different things would be if you hadn’t been there.”
Oreliell bowed her head. Balin recognized the look on her face; it was the same one she had when Beorn had mentioned being the last of his kind.
“I wish we could have done more,” she said.
Dís quickly stepped forward, took Oreliell’s hands in her own, and shook her head.
“Do not do that to yourself, lass,” she said. “I am sure that you did everything in your power to keep my kin safe. Because of you three, my brother and son live. Yes, I greatly mourn the loss of Fili, but I celebrate that I still have my family with me again.”
“He was a good man,” Oreliell said. “You should be very proud.”
Dís smiled.
“I am. I’m proud of all my family.” Her smile became teasing. “No matter how stubborn they are.”
A smile appeared on Oreliell’s face as she nodded.
“You don’t need to tell me. You wouldn’t believe the stories we could tell.”
“We were not as bad as you make us sound!” Kili exclaimed.
Everyone cast a glance at the prince while Oreliell scoffed.
“If I recall correctly, it was you and your brother that managed to lose several ponies to trolls, which inevitably ended in the brief capture of the company?”
Dís laughed. The dwarves chuckled at Kili’s red face, though they too could easily recall the events of that night. Even Tauriel appeared amused, and surprised, as if she had not yet heard the story.
“And I imagine you and your sister have quite a few stories to tell about Thorin.”
“I have ones that not even the company knows about,” she said.
Balin found himself highly amused by the look Oreliell gave Thorin.
Thorin’s eyes widened.
“You wouldn’t,” he said.
Oreliell’s smile grew wider.
“Wouldn’t I?”
Kili and Dwalin laughed loudly at her response. Even Vedis had an amused glint in her eyes. Balin couldn’t help but smile. He had missed the witty banter Oreliell and Thorin would exchange. It had been too long since he had heard it. And it had been too long since Balin had seen those looks in their eyes, the silent longing and hope they held.
Balin had seen that look several times over the quest, but had never been able to piece together what it meant. Once he learned that they were each others’ Ones, it became much clearer. Now, all Balin could hope for was that they would make time to talk and discuss all that had happened.
Tumblr media
That evening, Erebor held a banquet to celebrate the arrival of their kin from the Blue Mountains, including their beloved princess. Dís was well liked by Durin’s Folk, so they were excited to have her back with them. Food and ale poured out of the kitchens and music filled the great hall. Despite his old age, Balin quite enjoyed celebrations like this. He made pleasant conversation with those around him, taking his time with the food on his plate.
Balin turned when he felt a hand land on his shoulder. Dís smiled at him before looking to the few lords around them.
“My lords, pardon my intrusion,” she said. The men waved off her apology with smiles of their own. “I’m afraid I must borrow Balin for a few minutes. It shouldn’t take terribly long.”
“How can I be of service?” Balin asked once they were away from the crowd and listening ears.
“What is going on with Thorin?”
“How do you mean?”
Dís appeared almost unimpressed.
“Come now, Balin. I know my own brother. He is distracted. His mind wanders, even now as he is surrounded by his friends and kin.” She glanced toward Thorin, who was standing among a small group and nodding to whatever was being said, before looking back at Balin. “He’s been casting lots of glances at Oreliell.”
“As observant as ever, I see.” Balin wasn’t surprised that Dís had noticed. When she was much younger, she used this skill to find out secrets about her brothers.
“I lived with Thorin most of my life. Not to mention I raised both Fili and Kili, who were quite the little menaces.”
Balin took a step closer.
“You remember when Thorin went in search of your father?” Dís nodded. “He met Oreliell and Vedis during that time and they helped him. Over time… well, they learned that they are each other’s Ones.”
A wide smile broke out onto Dís’s face.
“Balin, that’s wonderful!”
“Aye, it is. But they are in a rough spot at the moment.”
“How so?”
Balin explained the events of the days leading up to the battle, of Thorin’s struggle with the dragon sickness, of his actions and words directed toward Oreliell. The more Balin explained, the more Dís appeared upset.
“Foolish man,” she grumbled once Balin was done. “We must do something. Thorin cannot continue to sulk about this. He needs to fix things.” She was silent for a long moment before straightening up. Balin recognized that look in her eyes. It was the same one that Kili and Fili would get when they were up to something. “I have an idea.”
She gave Balin the task of locating Thorin before she disappeared into the crowd.
“I’m too old for this,” Balin muttered. He scanned through the crowd, trying to determine where Thorin was, but had little success. Instead, Balin located Dwalin. He called for Dwalin, who excused himself from his conversation to join his brother. “Do you have any idea where Thorin is?”
Dwalin took a quick glance around.
“Seems he’s slipped out,” he said. “Probably back to his study to do paper work. Everything all right?”
“Hm? Oh yes. Everything’s fine.”
“What are you up to?”
“Oh no, not me. I’m afraid our princess has something up her sleeve.”
“That so? What is she up to?”
“I have a feeling it has something to do with Thorin and Oreliell.” He nodded toward the princess, who was heading their way. “She’s practically dragging Oreliell this way.”
Dwalin hummed in amusement. He took a sip of his ale but stayed standing by his brother, obviously wanting in on the discussion. Dís nodded to a small alcove where they all moved to. Oreliell smiled at the sons of Fundin.
“Is everything all right?” she asked.
“Everything’s fine, lass,” Balin said.
“We wanted to speak to you about Thorin,” Dís said.
Concern almost immediately came to her eyes.
“Is he all right?”
“In a manner of speaking,” Dwalin said with a shrug. Oreliell looked no less concerned. Balin huffed at his brother’s antics.
“Thorin has been acting off ever since the battle,” he said. “Physically, he is just fine. His injuries have healed. But… I believe that his heart still has some healing to do.” She tilted her head slightly. “When was the last time you spoke with Thorin?”
She glanced to the side, as if she was a child being scolded.
“We have not had much time,” she replied softly.
Dís laid a hand on Oreliell’s arm.
“Lass, I know I’ve not been in the mountain a full day yet, but I can see the difference in my brother. The looks I’ve seen him give you today… I’ve seen them before. He wants to talk, but doesn’t quite know how to approach you. You should talk with him.”
“I want to,” Oreliell said, “believe me. Since the battle, Vedis seems to watch me like a hawk, especially while I was recovering. And I’ve seen the glares that she sends Thorin, despite my requests to stop.”
Dís smiled.
“I’ve taken care of that. Kili and Tauriel are distracting her.”
Oreliell stared at the princess and laughed.
“You’ve thought of everything, haven’t you, Lady Dís?”
“Oh please, titles are far from necessary. You’re family. What you and Thorin have is special, and you both deserve to be happy. Fight for each other. You’re stronger together.”

Midamîn
Fíli x OC Tullaina (Midamîn = my happy place)
Warnings: talk about grief, losing a loved one, lots of sadness but also soft Fíli and... Fíli finally realizes something
Timing: this story happens about ten years before the quest, a few years before Adorable so Fíli and Tullaina are in their late sixties, early seventies (human equivalent of age 19-20 I think?)
Word count: 3.1k
A/N: This is a fic in Fíli’s POV. The title will make sense when you’ve read this story, it works for both Tullaina and Fíli, each for a different reason. This was a fic I wrote around one line of dialogue I had stuck in my mind for ages, and I commissioned the wonderful @mysandwichranaway to make this stunning artwork of my fic! They were incredibly fast and finished the art when I hadn’t even written down 100 words. Amazing!
@laurfilijames thinking of you 💚

The door opened with a loud croak, turning everyone’s attention from their dinner towards the young Dwarf entering the small living room.
Blue eyes searched every face sitting around the table, looking for the one person they wanted to see, tired shoulders slumping even further when he couldn’t spot them.
“Tullaina’s not home yet?” Fíli asked, even though he already knew the answer.
Dís shook her head, the worry evident in her eyes although she tried to hide it. Thorin placed his hand on her shoulder, telling her it would be alright, but the encouraging smile Dís gave her brother in return didn’t fool Fíli. He may still be a young Dwarf, barely in his seventies, but he was old enough to know what the lines around her mouth meant. He’d seen them countless times before, every time he and his brother got into trouble or were home late or when someone mentioned his father.
“We have to go out and look for her,” Kíli said, getting up from his seat.
“Sit down, Kíli,” Thorin spoke, his tone leaving no room for debate, “finish your soup.”
“But it’s already getting dark! It’s not safe for her to be out there!”
“And not for you either. She’ll come back when she’s ready. She always does.”
True, but she usually tells someone where she’s going or takes Kíli with her, Fíli thought. She hadn’t done either today.
Today marks twenty years since the horrible mine accident where Tullaina’s parents lost their lives, along with too many other Dwarves. Tullaina had left around noon and she’d been visibly upset. Fíli and Kíli had shared meaningful looks but decided to give her space and talk to her when she returned. Kíli suggested taking her to the lower fields she loved so much and both brothers agreed it was a good way to try and cheer her up. But it was past dinner time now and she still hadn’t returned.
Fíli took his usual place at the table and watched his mother and uncle eat their dinner in silence, his own meal left untouched. Kíli was staring at his empty plate, his thoughts no doubt on Tullaina…
She was strong, Fíli would never dare say otherwise, but he also remembered how she was in those first months after their passing. Her eyes had lost their warmth, the dull brown a reflection of the sadness inside. She barely ate any food, refusing all sweets and treats, mumbling something about being unworthy. She had lost her spark.
Kíli and her had been going on long walks to take her mind off things and to offer her a chance to talk in private. According to his brother, she never did.
When Kíli had to start training and school again, Tullaina went on those walks on her own and she gradually started to turn back into her old self.
Of course there were still days where she was quiet and closed off - they all had days like that, losing a parent does that to you - but they always found support and comfort in each other. Fíli was willing to do anything in his power to make her happy, if it meant he would never see her like in those first months again.
“Maybe Kíli and I could go look for her together, we only want to make sure she’s alright,” Fíli suggested, anxious to go and do something. He wasn’t the type of Dwarf to just sit down and wait.
“Tullaina clearly wants to be alone, Fíli. We all process our grief in a different way, let us respect her wishes,” Thorin answered, his expression soft and kind.
“She shouldn’t be alone,” Kíli muttered, picking at his fingernails, annoyed that he couldn’t be there for her.
No, Fíli agreed, she shouldn’t. He couldn’t shake the image of her walking around in the dark with no destination in mind, just trying to find a way to get rid of the emptiness inside. Tullaina was fierce, she could definitely handle herself, but right now she was also vulnerable, consumed by her grief, an easy target for the dark figures that were looming around the village at night.
When his father passed away, Fíli was lucky to have his brother and his family to support him. They made sure he knew he was loved, that he was allowed to grieve and always had someone to talk to or a shoulder to lean on. His mother and uncle Thorin did their best to fill the void his father left, without ever trying to replace him. Fíli never felt alone because they grieved together.
Tullaina’s entire family had been ripped away from her, there was no one left. No, that wasn’t entirely true, she could always count on Kíli. And him, even though their relationship had shifted in the last few years from being just friends to…to what exactly, Fíli hadn’t quite figured it out yet, he felt that ‘friends’ didn’t capture their dynamic anymore  - and of course she had Dís and Thorin, but he knew it wasn’t the same. They weren’t her real family. His mother had taken her in with the best intentions and he couldn’t be more thrilled about that, but they had unintentionally taken away the last thing she had left from her parents. Her home.
Fíli’s eyes widened and his lips parted when he realized he found the answer.
“I know where she is,” he said, more to himself than the others.
He pushed his chair back and jumped to his feet, ignoring the protests from Kíli, his mother and uncle when he opened the front door. “I know where she is!” he yelled at them before the door fell into the lock, shutting out their replies.
*
The streets of Ered Luin were almost completely abandoned, most of the mountain’s residents safely tucked away in their homes, enjoying their evening meal or taking rest after a day’s hard work. The few people who were still out greeted the young prince, but Fíli was too determined to reach his destination to acknowledge them as he ran by.
He tried not to think about all the trouble she could’ve found herself in by now, every scenario worse than the previous one. No, he refused to let his mind go down that road. He had left his home on a hunch, not entirely sure Tullaina was where he thought she would be, but he simply had to check. Kíli was going to be furious that he went without him, most likely claiming he was the one who should have gone, being her best friend and all, but Fíli wanted to be the one to comfort her. Was it so wrong of him to be selfish for once?
His feet followed the once so familiar path, not slowing down until he reached the narrow passageway on the outskirts of the mountain that led outside. Judging by the weeds and branches blocking the small gap between the rocks, it hadn’t been used for a very long time and it made Fíli second-guess his suspicions. It didn’t look like someone went through it recently.
The cold mountain air whipped his face as he slowly climbed through the gap, careful not to tear his clothes on the branches. He was sure to face a good scolding from his mother upon his return for leaving like that at this time of night, and he really didn’t want to add torn clothes to the list.
The Dwarf settlement in Ered Luin was located safely inside the mountain, the streets and houses skilfully carved into the stone. But it hadn’t always been that way.
Some of the miner families used to live in small houses on a ledge outside the mountain and it was almost like a community on their own. Tullaina and her parents were  part of that community, so naturally Fíli and Kíli had spent a lot of time there.
Fíli stared at the remnants of what once had been a busy street filled with food stalls, friendly conversation, laughter and mischief. A lot of mischief, he remembered fondly.
But that had been before the accident, before the lives of the people who lived here were permanently changed. Damaged beyond repair.
After the accident, the families moved back into the mountain one by one, the memories too painful to stay, leaving the abandoned houses at the mercy of the elements. Tullaina had an incredibly hard time leaving her childhood home behind so Fíli had a strong gut feeling this might be where he would find her.
His hand never left the stone walls, acting as support as he tried to walk over the slippery cobblestones without planting his face in them. It was a good thing it was such a clear night, the moon doing her best to illuminate the overgrown ledge so Fíli could successfully avoid tree roots and other obstacles. How trees and other greenery were even able to grow here, he didn’t know.
“Nature always finds a way I guess,” he muttered to himself.
Tullaina’s house stood at the end of the street. A lovely small house, partially carved into the mountain but with a wooden front, making it almost look like a forest cottage that had oddly been misplaced.
Fíli inhaled sharply as he noticed the rough shape it was in. The trees and undergrowth growing nearby were slowly but surely taking over everything, their branches reaching in through the cracks in the windows and wooden panels like fingers trying to rip out the frontage. The front door had lost the battle with gravity and hung half off its hinges, its green paint peeling off, revealing the rotten wood underneath.
The faint light of the moon gave everything an eerie glow and Fíli stood motionless, unable to fathom how it almost looked like the house itself was grieving too.
The wind picked up and he knew he had to move quickly, it wasn’t safe for him to stay out here much longer. He gave the front door a gentle push, just enough to make room for him to climb through and step inside.
If he had thought the outside was in a rough shape, it was nothing compared to what he found indoors. Furniture broken or tipped on its side, rugs torn or half-eaten by rodents, the branches making their way inside over the ceiling and he could see mold creeping up the walls, giving the whole space a musty old smell. The floor was littered with shards of glass from the broken windows, dry leaves and small twigs, their snapping and crunching echoing through the house every time Fíli stepped on them.
There was nothing left of the warm and cozy place Tullaina once called home. It was enough to leave a bad taste in his mouth. Had it truly been the right decision back then, he wondered as he let his fingers glide over a dust-covered side table, one he recognized as the culprit of the scar on Tullaina’s left knee. Had there been no other option but to tear her away from all these memories?
As the doubts started to take over and the secondhand guilt settled in his stomach, the image of a grief-stricken Tullaina appeared before his eyes and he shook his head to get rid of it. No, his mother had done the right thing. It was Tulls’ own choice not to come back here all these years, even though they had suggested it a few times. As his Uncle had said earlier this evening, they needed to respect her wishes. Even if he didn’t entirely agree with them.
Where in Mahal’s name could she be, he wondered. His gut feeling had never been wrong before… He was about to go and test his luck on the rotten stairs when he heard something.
A sniffle.
“Tullaina?” he called out, his voice echoing loudly through the moon-lit room. No answer.
Where was she? There was no way he had imagined the sound. Another choked sob reached his ears and his head jerked in the direction of the sound. The wooden floor croaked and protested under his weight as he carefully made his way further into the dim living room, his eyes flitting around looking for her.
He found her hidden behind the beat and dusty couch, curled up on the worn red carpet, shivering and hugging herself for comfort. Her eyes were closed and there were still wet tear streaks on her cheeks.
“Here you are,” he said, trying to keep the relief out of his voice so she wouldn’t feel guilty about worrying him. He knew the guilt had been eating at her the entire day, there was no need for him to add more.
She didn’t open her eyes, instead she hugged herself a little closer and tried to make her even smaller. Her whole frame showed what Fíli felt in that moment, pure and utter heartbreak. His instinct told him to go to her and take her in his arms where she would be safe, where he could try and make her feel whole again and hug her, show her that she was not alone, until all her tears were spent. But Fíli was afraid he would overstep.
He chose to sit down on the wooden crate next to her instead of joining her on the rug, not knowing if she would welcome his presence. They sat like that for a while, the silence between them almost deafening to his ears but he was struggling to come up with something to say. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to come alone, he thought, what if she preferred Kili to talk to instead of him, maybe he should go and hug her, maybe he-
“It should’ve been me.”
She whispered it so quietly, Fíli had almost missed it.
Tullaina lifted her head and her eyes met his, full with unshed tears, just waiting for her to blink so they could spill and roll down her cheeks, but he knew they would not do anything to ease her sadness. Fíli’s resolve not to overstep melted like snow in front of a forge, without any hesitation he wrapped an arm around her and pulled her into his side.
“I shouldn’t even be here,” she sobbed, hiding her face into the crook of his arm. Fíli felt how her tears soaked his tunic but he couldn’t care less. There was something else on his mind right now, something that made him purse his lips in frustration. He knew exactly what she meant with those words and he hated that she still felt like this.
Tullaina has been blaming herself for the death of her mother ever since the accident. And Fíli understood where she came from. Every few days, her father forgot his lunch and Tullaina would go to the mines to bring it to him. On the day of the mining accident, she’d already made plans with Kili and him so her mother had suggested she would go and bring the lunch for once. They had hugged and said their goodbyes before Tullaina made her way over to the Durin’s house, not knowing it would be the last time she saw her mother. Or her father.
It wasn’t her fault.
It wasn’t anyone’s fault, really. But that’s not how Tullaina saw it.
Even after all these years, she felt responsible, as if she had been the cause of the explosion. If she had gone to the mines like she always did, her mother would still be alive today. It didn’t matter to her that in that scenario she would’ve been the one to die alongside her father. Fíli didn’t think he could’ve handled that.
Thick, wet tears kept rolling over her cheeks onto his clothes while sobs racked her entire body, and Fíli could do nothing but his best to comfort her.
“I-I know that I can’t change the way you feel, Tulls,” he began, carefully choosing his words, “but if it’ll help I can keep telling you that none of it was your fault. Because it wasn’t.”
She released a shaky breath.
“It wasn’t your fault,” he repeated over and over again as he gently rocked her - he’d done this so many times with Kíli when he was still a pebble and had a nightmare, that he started doing it on instinct - until eventually her sobs died down a little. He placed his fingers under her chin and tilted her head upwards, but she kept her eyes fixed on the ground, too embarrassed to meet his.
“Hey,” he spoke softly, almost cooing at her, “hey, look at me.”
His free hand caressed her cheek ever so gently, softly wiping the remaining tears away. Fíli lowered his head and kissed the top of her head. The loving gesture made her look up, and when her brown eyes locked into his blue ones, Fíli all but lost his ability to breathe. He swallowed heavily when every possible emotion fought for the upper hand as he kept holding onto her. She was so close…
A shiver ran through her body, which prompted Fíli to lazily rub her arm and whisper comforting words as she laid her head on his chest. They sat like that for a while, neither of them saying anything, simply enjoying each other’s company. He knew they should go back, but his selfish side kept him right where he was.
“Every morning I thank Mahal that he didn’t take you away from me that day,” he confessed, his voice low but steady. The arm that was still wrapped around her shoulders tightened its hold in an unconscious attempt to bring her even closer. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Tullaina hummed quietly in response and Fíli wondered if she was even awake at this point. Maybe it was for the best.
It was in that private moment Fíli realized why he could not lose her. He’d known this before of course, in the same way that he could not lose Kíli or his mother, but in the past few years it somehow always felt different with Tullaina, just like he felt that the term ‘friend’ didn’t really fit her anymore.
And now he knew.
It wasn't friendship he felt for her… It was love.

Relationships: Kíli x OC (Fem!Dwarf)
Content: Rated M, fluff, mild smut (for now)
Summary: The first time Kíli saw Myrna, he fell in love with her. However, at the same time, she was betrothed to his brother. Whatever he tried, he couldn't forget his feelings for her.
On AO3: here
Note 1: Well... At first, I just wanted to write a smutty short Kíli story but my hands didn’t want to stop... (9836 words) Note 2: My inspiration came from Caught 2 by laurfilijames. I loved that Kíli felt guilty... so I tortured him myself now. Note 3: First time I wrote directly in English and it isn’t my native language, so I’m sorry for the mistakes!
Tumblr media
Since she was a child, Myrna has grown up in The Blue Mountain. Her father, a modest dwarf, started as a simple merchant, but he progressively made a fortune. Myrna quickly passed from a normal life to one full of wealth and rules of propriety. No more forest trips. No more funny days with her friends. No more training weapons. She hated it. She had no more time for herself. She hated her planned days and all the things she had to learn without knowing why she learned it. However, Myrna was an obedient girl. She did everything her parents asked her to do.
One day, the worst of her life came. Her parents asked her to go with them to dinner. She was young and she didn’t understand why her mother spent so much time dressing her. “You have to be perfect,” she said all day. She was young but not stupid. When they arrived in Thorin’s Halls, she knew the night would be long and special. In the dinner room, there were already three people waiting for them. Myrna had never seen her parents smile like that. She curtsied as her mother did. When she raised her head, she could see a dwarrowdam and two young dwarves. They seemed to be her age. Her father introduced her to Dís, the mother of the young dwarf Fíli and Kíli, then to the children. She understood immediately who they were. The dinner was simpler than she expected. She was staying calm and was showing propriety. The other two boys, however, seemed to be bored and played with whatever they found on the table. Myrna did everything to stay focused and not laugh.
At the end of the meal, they had ice cream for dessert. Myrna was happy because she loved ice cream, all desserts actually. She was almost finished with her dessert when Dís talked to her directly. Myrna was answering her politely until she asked her opinion about Fíli, the blonde dwarf. The dwarf in question stopped what he was doing to look at his mother. As Myrna was uncomfortable, Dís smiled at her and turned the conversation to Myrna’s parents.
“I agree with both of you. She will make a wonderful wife for my son.”
Myrna literally spitted everything she had in her mouth. Her parents jumped on their chairs. Fíli and Kíli bursted out laughing.
“Oh, she didn’t know about it yet,” Dís smiled while Myrna wiped her mouth and the ice cream on the table.
She was redder than ever and apologized until they left.
Of course, her mother scolded her once they were home. Her father said nothing, trying to not laugh each time he was looking at his daughter. The next day, she really understood what it meant to marry the dwarf from yesterday. As usual, she didn’t say anything. She knew all the stories about Erebor’s dwarves since they had to leave their mountain. A daughter of a rich merchant is a good deal, and her father knew how to profit from it.
When her parents asked her if she agreed with this, she said yes. What else could she have said? But in truth, she didn’t like this. She said nothing and decided to play the perfect betrothed for her parents. In return, she asked her parents for more free time. They finally came with an agreement: once every two or three weeks, she had one free day. She will be able to do whatever she wants without being watched. It's better than nothing!
..
A few years passed and Myrna grew up. She continued to learn how to behave properly, especially if she became queen. She played the perfect betrothed as she promised to her parents.
Over time, Fíli and Myrna spent quite some time together during important events. At first, Fíli thought the same as she did about their engagement but with time, he was really glad. Being betrothed gave him peace. No girl ran after him. From the beginning, Fíli and Myrna agreed to fake their relationship with everyone; even Kíli didn't know it was totally fake. Fíli politely told her she wasn’t his type of girl, and the same was true for Myrna. They gradually became good friends. .
Today was her free day. Myrna was extremely happy because the sun was there, and everything was ready for her trip. She had until tomorrow and she didn’t want to waste any more minutes. Far from dressed as usual, she wore a simple shirt, jacket and trousers. She could sneak outside without being noticed. Her bag on her back, she ran to the stable. She thought she heard someone call her, but her parents knew it was a free day, so she didn’t stop. She had no obligations that day! Her pony was waiting for her, and she left when the sun was barely rising.
She went to her new favourite secret spring place: a calm forest with a small river. She knew she was safe. She was sure there were no orc camps nearby. When she arrived, the sun was up. Her objectives for the day: read a book with her feet in the water, sleep in the spring grass, eat the delicious tarts she brought and practice with her bow if she had time.
The water was cold, but she liked it. The air was warm, and she could still smell the morning scent of the forest. She pulled up her trousers and sat down with her feet in the river. She was about to read her book when she heard a noise. Her pony didn’t move but she quickly stood up to grab her bow. As she was putting an arrow in place, she waited in silence. She expected a goat, a bear or at worst a goblin but she was far from expecting a dwarf. When Kíli emerged from the trees, she froze in surprise. The dwarf remained motionless until she lowered her bow.
“You scared me!” Kíli said as he walked toward her.
Myrna was trying to keep her calm. What was he doing here? How did he get here? Is he going to ruin my favourite day?!, she thought. Even though Fíli and Kíli were inseparable, Myrna was always alone with Fíli when they were together. She didn’t know him well. She sighed and tried to be polite.
“Good morning, Prince Kíli. How can I help you?” she said, smiling. “Hi, Lady Myrna! What are you doing here? It’s dangerous here. You can’t go to a place like this alone. Did Fíli know you're here?” he said, walking toward her.
Is he really going to play the protective dwarf now?, she kept to herself. Once he was in front of her, she didn’t even know what to say to him. She breathed slowly before answering him.
“I'm safe here. There is no danger around and my parents know I’m gone for the day. So you don’t have to worry about me and please leave me alone.” “Mahal, you're my brother's betrothed. Of course I'm worried about you! Why is Fíli not with you?” Kíli said, raising your voice. “Fíli didn't know I'm here...” she finally admitted. “First calm down, then follow me.”
As Myrna walked toward the river, Kíli followed her. He sat by the river with his feet in the water, like she did. He tried to stay calm, but he couldn't contain himself by asking many questions. Myrna ended up telling him about her free days and all the places she used to go. The dwarf was impressed and continued to ask many questions.
“So, can I stay with you?” he asked with puppy-eyes. “No, you can’t. I just want a peaceful day and, without wanting to be rude, I think it’s impossible with you.” “I promise you will be good! You won’t even realize I’m here!” he tried to convince her.
Myrna sighed because she knew he wouldn't leave her alone for the day.
“Alright. But nobody should know where I go. Please promise me you’ll never tell anyone where I go,” she said seriously, fixing his eyes. “Even Fíli?” he asked, astonished.
What didn’t you understand in “nobody”?, she thought. Myrna just stared at him without answering.
"Alright, alright! I promise you I’ll never tell anyone!” Kíli said with a bright smile. “But allow me to accompany you from time to time!”
Myrna didn't know if he wanted to come with her to protect her or just to avoid his duties. She couldn't help but finally smile at him. She didn't really have a choice, so she accepted. Kíli was so happy that he jumped on his legs.
“Great! What do you usually do? Explore the forest? Swimming in the river?” he asked with enthusiasm. “Not at all,” she laughed as she stood up. “I read books, sleep on the grass or spend some time with my pony.”
His bored face was so extreme that she couldn't help but laugh. She could read on his face that he was really disappointed by her activities. Then, he looked at her bow.
“Oh! You have a bow! I didn't know you practiced archery!”
Because you don’t know anything about me, she wanted to answer. And maybe because she started learning to use a bow when she saw him use it when she was young.
Since Myrna and Fíli were engaged, she often went to Thorin's Halls. The first time she saw Fíli practicing with other dwarfs, she also saw his brother and she wanted to try archery too. But she wasn’t allowed. Of course her parents were against the idea of using a weapon, so she bought herself a bow and arrows during her free day. Since then, she has practiced alone.
“Show me how you use it!” Kíli said, handing the bow to her. “Not now,” she answered, crossing her arms against her chest. “I'm here to read this book. If you're bored, you can go back home and leave me alone.”
Myrna sat back with her feet in the river and began to read. Kíli sighed as he sat down next to her. Silently, he lied down and looked at the sky. She was finally able to read. When she took a break, she smiled as she saw Kíli sleeping peacefully. As little as she had seen him since she had known him, he had never been so calm. Myrna didn't even know he could be so quiet. She continued to read until lunchtime woke up the dwarf. He grumbled slowly before opening his eyes. Looking up at the sky, he grumbled once again.
“What's the problem, my prince?” Myrna asked, turning her head toward him and closing her book. “When I saw you escape with your pony, I rushed to not lose sight of you... Soooo I have nothing to eat. And I'm starving.” “As you were well-behaved, I will share my lunch. But it's only for this time.” "This time? So you really agreed that I can follow you again?” he said, smiling ear to ear. “If I can continue to do what I want, you can come with me,” she answered, shrugging. “But-” “Yeah, I know. I will never tell anyone where you're going,” Kíli smiled as he sat suddenly on the grass. “Soooo where’s the lunch?”
Myrna walked to her pony to get out a package wrapped with a towel. Inside, there was a savoury pie and a sweet pie. She had secretly stolen them in her mother's kitchen just before she left.
Once their lunch was over, Myrna wanted to sleep. The sun behind the clouds and the light spring wind was perfect for a nap. She laid down next to her pony and closed her eyes. Kíli had just woken up, so he went into the forest to make sure the place was safe. It's a bit late to do that, isn't it?, she thought as he was disappearing behind the trees.
The sun was still high when she awoke. It was so calm that she was sure she was alone. Maybe Kíli was so bored he went home!, she thought as she stood up. Myrna would be happy to see him or chat with him in another situation but not today. On top of that, she wanted to practice archery.
Now she was in good shape, she prepared herself to train. Her clothes made it easier for her. She had practiced for a long time until she heard a voice.
“You’re not bad!” she heard behind her as she shot an arrow.
She took a small dagger on her hip and quickly turned over, ready to stab the person who took her by surprise. When she saw it was Kíli, her muscles relaxed but he could see the anger on her face. The dagger was still in his direction.
“Are you stupid? I could have hurt you!” she cried, losing her usual cool temper. “Did nobody tell you to not surprise an armed person?”
Stepping back, Myrna realized she pointed a weapon at an Erebor heir. Then, she also realized her behaviour. Her cheeks quickly blushed. As if she wasn't troubled enough, she couldn't understand why he was smiling at her.
“I-I’m so sorry, my Prince!” she stammered. “I never should have pointed a dagger at you like that! I’m-”
Myrna couldn’t continue to apologize because the dwarf burst out laughing. She put away her dagger and raised an eyebrow.
“I’ve never seen you upset or raise your voice! I didn’t expect to see you losing your temper like this!” he said with difficulty because he was laughing so much. “Fíli’ll never believe when I tell him!” “N-no!” she said as she grabbed his arm. “You promised me not to tell anyone!” “Oh yes, you’re right!” he smiled with a wink.
He’s more stupid than I thought..., she though as she sighed. Kíli walked toward her as he looked at her bow.
“Would you allow me to give you some advice?” he asked, waiting for her approval to come closer and already excited to show her his skills.
Myrna didn’t answer. Not because she didn’t want to train with him. The true reason was that she wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to get close to him. She hesitated a long time before Kíli reassured her.
“Don’t worry, I won’t do anything improper,” he kindly smiled. “You’re my brother's betrothed and I don’t want him to kill me!”
So, he really doesn’t know about our fake relationship, she thought happily. Myrna finally accepted Kíli's offer. They trained for two hours before heading home. In the end, Myrna was happy Kíli found her. She spent a nice day with him. More than she expected when she left in the morning. But of course, she didn’t tell him. She also didn't tell him that she really enjoyed his presence and their bow’s training.
They parted before anyone could see them together. Myrna smiled a last time at Kíli as she asked him to promise again to hold his tongue. The young dwarf promised her once again and wink at her.
“Let me know the next time you’re free!” he said before leaving.
Myrna couldn’t tell that she wasn’t sure if there will be a next time. He didn't give her time for that. She finally went back home like her usual free day.
.
This is how Myrna spent her first free day with the prince Kíli. First but not the last. Because she had no idea how much Kíli had loved that day. She had no idea how much he loved her.
Ever since he saw her the day when she was introduced as Fíli’s future wife, he had fallen in love with her. Mahal, he knew he shouldn't, so he always watched her from a distance while she was close to his brother. She always smiled or laughed when she was with him.
Even though he was sure she was his One, he had never told about this to his brother. Whenever she came to Thorin's Halls, it was for celebrations or to see Fíli. She was the most beautiful dwarrowdam he had ever seen. She was always beautifully dressed. He spoke to her a few times, but she seemed so distant he thought she hated him.
Yet, this day showed him the opposite. She didn’t hate him. She even allowed him to follow her on her future free days, which Fíli didn’t even know their existences.
That day was the first time he could talk to her one-on-one and it was a long day! In truth, he hardly controlled himself. All he wanted was to make her smile, touch her, kiss her and even more... His long break in the forest allowed him to keep his cool. He couldn’t stay and see her asleep next to him. Thanks Mahal she didn't look for him. He couldn't have explained to her why he had to take care of himself alone without shocking her. He was even more surprised when he came back and saw her training with her bow. She was almost too perfect for him, even though she wasn’t for him. She never will be. Yet, as long as he keeps his promise, only the two of them will know those secrets free days.
..
Weeks passed and Kíli had no news of Myrna. He started to wonder if she didn’t lie to him to get rid of him. So, when Fíli’s birthday was celebrated, he didn’t approach her. Nothing changed like before, in fact. The party was big because Fíli entered adulthood. He was always close to his brother but that day Fíli was between a splendid Myrna and his usually serious uncle Thorin. Kíli stayed next to his mother. Her eyes were so proud at the sight of his child becoming an adult.
In truth, Myrna didn’t like to be here, as for Fíli. The celebration was too much. They knew they had to be next to each other, as usual. Except for this time, Myrna had a courting braid in her hair. If he was now an adult, he had to show everybody she was his. For both of them, their union was always something for later and they didn’t really talk about this. But now, they knew things would start to move.
.
Just before the celebration, Myrna went to Fíli’s bedroom. Her mother had explained to her about the braid, and Thorin did the same with Fíli. Sitting in a chair, Fíli began to grab a strand of her hair.
“Myrna if you don’t want this, I can talk to my mother or my uncle and-” “No Fíli,” she cut him off, smiling. “It’s fine. We just must play the fake couple as usual. Well, if it’s still fine for you too.” “It’s fine. I don’t care about this whole wedding thing as much as it doesn't hurt you,” he sighed, starting to braid. “Stop it before I fall in love with you!” she joked, hearing him laugh too. “It’s the same for you Fíli. If you fall in love with someone and you want to stop it, don’t worry about me. You will need to worry more about you when Thorin finds out!”
Once her courting braid finished, she made one for Fíli. After that, she came home to prepare herself. Or rather, to her mother prepare her.
.
Yes, she was beautiful this night. Her dress, her makeup, her hairstyle was perfect. With all the money they have, the opposite would be surprised. She hated to be dressed like this, but she followed her mother's wishes, as usual. At least, as she was betrothed, no dwarf bothered her.
The only thing Myrna motivated her to come was that she would be able to see Kíli. Yet, every time she looked at him, he avoided her gaze. Since he isn’t a smart dwarf, she quickly understood he was doing it on purpose. She couldn’t help but laugh; especially when she decided to look at him regularly. She was trying to be as discreet as possible but Fíli noticed her laughing. She lied, telling him she had seen a dwarf doing stupid things. Myrna continued to look at Kíli from time to time during dinner. The more he got angry, the more she continued. He really made her night!
When the meal was over, Myrna had to dance with Fíli before doing anything. After their dance, they used to enjoy a part of the night separately. Fíli joined some friends of his and Myrna walked outside to cool her head.
When Myrna arrived outside, she sat on a bench. She was used to dancing, but those shoes were a nightmare. In the distance, she saw Kíli get some fresh air too. No one was there except them, so she walked over to him. When he saw her approaching, he started to run to the opposite side. Myrna frowned and ran too. However, her feet didn’t want to follow her will and she stumbled. Fortunately, she caught the wall. Kíli, hearing Myrna moaning, turned over and rushed to her.
“Are you alright? Are you hurt?” he asked with haste. “Do I have to hurt myself for the prince Kíli to deign to speak to me?” she asked, raising her smiling head to him.
Kíli stupidly froze before her smile. She had to speak again to wake him up.
“Are you angry because of the dinner? I’m not even sorry because it had been a long time since I had so much fun,” she said as she sat down on a bench next to them. "I'm not angry. Not anymore, actually. It was really difficult to eat a meal like that but...”
If it allowed me to make you smile, it was worth it, he thought. Myrna contained herself from bursting into laughter. She didn't want to draw attention. She was trying to keep her usual polite behaviour, but she felt like a child when she was with this dwarf.
“So, why did you avoid me?” she asked without further ado. “Um, I had had no news of you for weeks. So, I thought you lied to me and you didn’t want me to come with you on your next free day,” he said in a low voice. “Ah um, I see. I’m sorry I was busy. The only free day I had was already planned with old friends,” she explained, embarrassed. “N-no, I’m the one who’s sorry! It was stupid...” “If you want, my next free day is tomorrow. We can’t go to another place than the last time,” she smiled at him. “Yes! I would be happy to come with you!” he said a little too loud. “Oh sorry, I’ll speak less loud.”
Myrna sighed but she was happy to see his enthusiasm. Maybe it’s not a bad idea to have someone following me on my trip, she thought as she explained to Kíli their meeting point for the next day. As she stood up off the bench, Kíli followed her with his eyes.
“Now if you excuse me, I have another prince to join. He must look at me and like all the Durin’s, he hates to wait,” she said to him, smiling. “I guess so,” he said, losing his smile as he saw her courting braid. “Enjoy your night.” “Thank you. You too! When I left the dance floor, I heard some dwarrowdam searching for you!”
Myrna curtsied before leaving. She went back to Fíli for the rest of the night. As for Kíli, he was no longer in the mood to celebrate his brother’s birthday. He went to his bedroom to prepare his trip for the next day.
..
The next day Kíli went with Myrna as she said. And weeks later, he accompanied her again. For months, Myrna let him go with her to places she kept for her. Sometimes she planned her free day alone, but it was not the same without him. Most of the time, they walked side by side, talked about their days, trained with their bow, ... Of course, Kíli couldn't spend a free day without making her some jokes. At first, she was tired of it, but she got used to it eventually.
Myrna was glad to have a new friend to rely on. She could complain for hours about her mother while he did the same with his uncle, or Balin who tried to teach him history or languages. When she was Fíli, she never could talk about this kind of thing. They were always surrounded by many dwarves. And her other friends didn’t have enough free time to spend a whole day with her.
..
Then, weeks, months and years passed more quickly than they realized. It was normal now for Kíli to join Myrna on her free days; even now no one knew about it, not even Fíli.
Kíli enjoyed each day spent with Myrna but over time, his feelings became more and more complicated to hide. He couldn't stop thinking of her when he was alone. Especially at night, just before falling asleep. He wanted to touch her, to kiss her, to feel her skin against his. At the same time, he felt more and more guilty toward his brother. Like a poison hurting his heart every day. He shouldn’t think of his brother's betrothed like that. He shouldn't spend her free days with her. Fíli should. But he couldn’t say no each time Myrna invited him.
.
One winter morning, Kíli had planned to join Myrna in the stable after breakfast time. With the cold and the late sun, they didn’t have to leave early. Yet, she was waiting for so long she thought he wouldn't come. Her fingers were frozen, and she couldn’t feel the tip of her nose, yet she was wearing a thick coat.
When Kíli joined her, he was in a very bad mood. Avoiding her eyes, he pulled his pony out of the stable, saying a curt hello. Myrna didn't dare to ask him what the problem was. She let him calm down during the way to their new special place. She had planned to travel on their ponies all day and finished in a small inn with a lot of good, hot food.
In truth, Kíli was so angry and disappointed by what happened earlier in the morning he didn't want to speak, or he couldn’t. He didn’t even know how to calm down. Earlier this morning, he went into his brother's bedroom just before leaving. He wanted to borrow one of his pairs of gloves since he lost his a few days ago. Without waiting, he loudly opened the bedroom's door and quickly walked in. Fíli was still asleep but Kíli saw another head coming out from the sheets. A dwarrowdam. There was a dwarrowdam in his brother's bed and she had nothing to do with Myrna. At first, he was so shocked he couldn't speak. If Fíli wasn’t naked, he would have grabbed him by the collar of his shirt. So, he just shouted his brother's name as he rushed over to him. Fíli woke up and sat on his bed while the dwarrowdam hid herself under the sheets.
“How can you sleep with another dwarrowdam while you’re engaged?” Kíli yelled, furiously. “Wow Kíli! Have you already heard about knocking first? Now calm down. You’ll wake up all the mountain!” his brother said, still half-awake. “How can I calm down? If Myrna knew about this, she'd be devastated!” he resumed with the same tone. “Kíli...” Fíli sighed as he led his brother to his door, trying to explain to him without telling him everything. “She already knows about this, and she agrees. And I’m sure she does the same on her side.” “It’s impossible! I don’t believe you! I thought... I thought you loved her...” Kíli said, going from angry to sad.
Fíli didn’t know how to react. Between his furious brother and the dwarrowdam still in his bed, I couldn’t tell him the truth. Plus, he wasn’t sure if Myrna would agree to tell him the truth. So, he decided to change the subject.
“Brother, this concerns Myrna and me. Don’t trouble yourself with that,” he tried to say like nothing happened. “Anyway, why did you come to my room?”
Fíli could see his brother was affected by what he had just learned. Maybe he would talk about it later, but now he had to get him out of the bedroom. After he gave him his gloves, Kíli finally left the room without more words.
.
Consequently, it was very difficult for him to calm down when he saw Myrna smiling at him all day. Myrna tried to cheer him up, but he didn’t seem to want to smile. They stayed on their ponies until the sun started to go down. With her map, Myrna easily found an inn. The place was nicer and warmer than she had imagined. She was so glad to find it before the night. Once she paid for two rooms and asked for dinner, she joined Kíli, sitting down next to him. He was already settled on a nice small table, pulling his gloves off.
“Oh, those Fíli’s gloves, aren't they?” she asked with a smile tearing his heart apart. “So. Now we’re well settled, we can talk. What’s the problem with you today? You barely talk to me. I know you usually like to go out in the winter so maybe it’s my fault. Did I do something wrong?”
Kíli didn’t answer. He didn’t want to hurt her. But he knew he was no longer able to hide it from her. He tried even so. He changed the subject and talked about their day. Later, they ate a delicious, hot meal and Kíli smiled again. During the meal, he ordered some ale. Myrna hardly ever drinks alcohol. And here, it's better this way! Because once they finished their dinner, Myrna had to lift the dwarf by his shoulder to help him to walk. She led him to his bedroom, scolding him all long. As she let him fall on his bed, she heard talk without understanding anything. As a good friend, she took his shoes and laid him down.
When he finally stopped talking and closed his eyes, Myrna sat on the bed next to him to be sure he was alright. If he hadn’t drunk so much ale, maybe she would ask him again what troubled him. She was about to stand up when Kíli grabbed her wrist.
“I found out about something that will hurt you, so I don’t know how to tell you,” he said with his eyes still closed. “It’s about Fíli...”
His throat dried up, but he finally revealed to her what he had discovered in the morning. Myrna froze and looked at the hearth. She didn’t freeze because of what Fíli did. They talk about this long before his adulthood. She obviously agreed with him. Their relationship was fake, so she didn’t have to take care of his needs. And she was even glad! However, she was afraid Kíli would realize their fake relationship. She wasn’t ready to announce this to her parents and even less Dís!
“Um, what Fíli told you about this?” Myrna said calmly, turning her eyes to the dwarf.
As usual, Kíli reacted with too much energy. He sat up so quickly he almost fell off the bed. Myrna caught him just before. His eyes were wide, and his mouth was fully opened.
“You really knew it,” he said, not knowing if it was a question or an assertion. “You-you knew my brother was sleeping with another dwarrowdams and it doesn’t matter to you!” “Kíli, calm down,” she tried to figure out how to get herself out of this mess. “We've been engaged for years, and we’re not married yet.”
She had a hard time finding a logical answer. If I loved Fíli, I would never agree with this, she thought. So, I understand if he doesn’t believe me. It won’t be easy...
“But… Don’t you both love each other?” Kíli calmly asked so innocently that Myrna had a heartache for lying to him. “Love...” she lightly laughed.
I know I don’t love Fíli, and he doesn't love me, she thought while she was playing with her courting braid. And how could I fall in love with anyone knowing I’ll marry Fíli one day. I can’t complain, Fíli is far from being a bad match. With time, she got used to her position. Even though she will never fall in love with Fíli, now that she was older, she understood the issues of their union. Thorin’s people needed the money her father gave them in return. Anyway, she was sad to see Kíli this troubled. Maybe if I had been engaged to Kíli... No, pull yourself together woman!, she forced herself to think.
“Listen, you shouldn’t worry about this. It concerns only Fíli and I,” she said, putting her hand on his shoulder.
Her answer was not enough. He frowned and his eyes changed. She was surprised to see a start of anger.
“Do you also sleep with other dwarfs?” he asked curtly, grabbing her hand on his shoulder.
Myrna was shocked by his question and his attitude. He had never behaved so harshly or violently. Like all friends, they had already quarrelled several times. They are both very stubborn. But here, Myrna slivered when she heard him. Plus, she found it hard to believe what he had just said. She took her hand back and stood up.
“The one who hurt me is not Fíli. It’s you Kíli. I thought you knew me better. Plus, if I want to sleep with other dwarfs, it’s not your concern!”
She didn’t realize she gradually raised her voice. Her arms against her body and her fists clenched, she was having trouble controlling her anger. Before running into her bedroom, she looked at Kíli. His eyes were still full of anger. In her bedroom, she locked the door and stood for a while. She found it hard to believe what had just happened. Although she was sure not to sleep, she undressed and laid down on the bed. How could he talk to me like that? With so much anger..., she sighed. Anyway, tomorrow is another day. I hope he’ll calm down and won’t ask me any more questions... Finally, she fell asleep wrapped like a cocoon.
.
The next day, Myrna woke up early. She slept better than she thought. The room was cold but the weather seemed calm from what she could see through the window. She dressed quickly and went downstairs to eat her breakfast. The only person in the room was Kíli, slowly eating his breakfast. His eyes were empty. Firstly, she hesitated but finally decided to sit at the same table. The young dwarf raised his head and choked. Myrna couldn't help but laugh, even though she was still angry about the last night. Kíli abruptly stood up from his chair and approached her.
“Myrna! I-I'm so sorry for yesterday! I don't even know how to apologize! I should never say everything I said! I was drunk and... Even drunk, I shouldn't… I'm so sorry...”
Myrna was always weak at Kíli's apologies. She had been really hurt the night before but he looked really sorry, so she couldn't help but forgive him. There was no point in staying angry with him.
“I don't know if I can forgive you... Um, what about a big meal full of meat and sweet cakes on my next free day in exchange for my forgiveness?” “Everything you want!” he said with his usual cheerful smile. “If I knew it was so easy, I would ask more! Alright, sit down and eat. We have to go soon.”
After their breakfast, they hurried home. None of them wanted to be caught and scolded.
...
Months and years passed, and Myrna heard a news she wasn’t ready for. Thorin and a few dwarves will go on a journey to take back Erebor. No one informed her. She heard it when her mother was talking to her father, like she wasn’t concerned. Furious, she went to meet Fíli the very afternoon she found out. He was with his mother, brother, and uncle. Around a table, their voices were loud, especially Dís’. The room didn’t have a door, so she heard everything before approaching, and they saw her coming. As she expected, the two young dwarfs wanted to go with their uncle to Erebor and their mother was against it.
Myrna was looking at Fíli as he avoided her gaze. Dís invited her to take place around the table. Seated, she quickly looked at Kíli, surprised by her presence, then returned to Fíli. The blonde one seemed embarrassed to be next to her.
“Lady Myrna, please excuse us for our behaviour,” Thorin said, looking at her. “There is nothing to excuse, my Lord,” Myrna said calmly. “I understand why you are upset, especially Lady Dís.” “Finally somebody understands me!” she said. “So, it’s out of the question for both of you to accompany your uncle in this quest. Now Myrna is here, we’ll talk about this later, or never.”
After this, Fíli and Kíli left the room with Myrna while Thorin and Dís resumed their conversation. The three of them were rarely alone. Walking in silence, they arrived in Fíli’s room. Once they were inside, Fíli sat on a chair while Myrna was staying on her feet and Kíli was leaning against the wall near the door.
“When were you going to tell me that you wanted to leave?” Myrna began as calmly as possible. “Myrna,” Fíli started just before his brother wanted to. “I imagine it’s difficult to you to understand we wanted to go in such quest but-” “The problem is not the quest, Fíli. The problem is you didn’t even tell me directly you wanted to leave,” Myrna said while her eyes went to Kíli before turning to Fíli. “I thought...”
I thought I was more important than that, she wished to say. Before her behaviour, Fíli asked his brother to let them alone. Reluctantly, he left the room with a last glance to Myrna.
Fíli and Myrna talked a lot this afternoon. She understood he didn’t want to inform her until he had his mother's approval for their departure. And she still hasn’t allowed them to accompany their uncle. The sky started to darken when they finished talking. Both were now in a better mood. The gentleman dwarf took Myrna home before dinner time.
.
Over the next few days, Myrna worried about the two young dwarfs. They were too young to go on this quest, but she had nothing to say about it. She stayed home until Fíli went to her home to announce his mother's decision. Dìs had finally given up and allowed them to join the company of Thorin. At the news, her smile was dull. She tried to be happy for them, but her anxiety tore her heart. Although she never thought it would happen, she will miss the celebrations with Fíli joking about the guests, and her free days with Kíli. Her free day will be boring without him...
The departure’s day quickly arrived. Thorin and a few other dwarves were already left. The night before their departure, Fíli and Kíli had organised a little party. Myrna and some other friends were invited to a small pub. It was just a pub, so Myrna dressed simply. She had had time to get used to the idea they were leaving, and she was really happy for them. Only the blonde one and three friends were already seated in the pub when she arrived. They all made way for her next to the prince. Gradually, other friends joined them.
When Kíli finally entered the pub, he saw Myrna laughing with Fíli's arm on her shoulders. It was the last night before departure, and he was incredibly sad. He wanted more than anything to help to take back Erebor for sure! There was no way he would let his brother and his uncle go there without him! Seeing Myrna happy in his brother's arm made him sad. Maybe the journey to Erebor will help him to overcome this eternal torture and find a nice girl.
As he sat at the table next to Myrna, everyone shouted his name. Fíli was happy his brother joined them. Myrna was wholeheartedly smiling at him. He couldn’t help but smile back. Beside her, he took advantage of the noisy discussions to talk to her. They chatted for a very long time until a friend challenged Myrna to drink Fíli’s drink all at once. Their discussion was finished and Kíli sent a mean look to the friend.
“She never drinks alcohol,” Kíli said, knocking on the table as the others were laughing at his reaction. “It’s alright, Prince Kíli. I think I can handle it!” she said as she took Fíli’s drink.
It was not an ale. It was something stronger. She wasn’t expecting it and everyone started to laugh when she coughed. Kíli was worried about Myrna and Fíli saw it.
“Don’t worry, Kíli. She will be fine in no time!” the blonde said as he handed a glass of water to Myrna.
As his brother said, Myrna was smiling. The night seemed to pass quickly to Myrna after this. She wasn’t at all used to alcohol, so she didn’t say anything but laughed at all the jokes.
After a few friends left the pub, they were a small group. Fíli wasn’t at his first ale while Kíli hadn’t drunk much to enjoy the party. When it is late and the dwarves are drunk a lot, the subjects change in a more intimate way. And at this time, one friend asked something Kíli never wanted to see.
“Myrna! You’ll miss Fíli, right? Show us how you two kiss! Come on!” he said as the others cheered up.
To tell the truth, they never kissed each other. Myrna never asked for and Fíli never tried. Fíli was smiling exaggeratedly while Myrna lightly chuckled. On the other hand, Kíli wasn’t ready for this. He wanted to take Myrna's hand, pull it and take her away from here, in a place where they could talk all night alone. But he didn’t have the time, or the courage.
When they kissed, all of their friends energetically shouted. Their kiss continued until they heard an abrupt punch on the table. They all turned their gaze to the one who had done it: Kíli. He really wanted it, but he couldn’t contain himself. His wrist ached, but it was nothing compared to his heart. When he raised his head toward those around the table, he understood what he did. He mumbled some words before getting up. Myrna was surprised by his behaviour, but she was more shocked when she saw a few tears in his eyes. Without waiting, Kíli apologized and ran out of the pub. Fíli grabbed Myrna’s hand when she suddenly stood up.
“I’ll come with you,” the blonde said as he stood up too.
The party was consequently over but Fíli and Myrna took the time to politely say goodbye to their friends. Then, they rushed to Kíli’s bedroom. His brother was sure to find him there. Finally, he wasn’t there. Myrna had an idea where they could find him. It was the place where they usually met before leaving on her free days: just behind the stable. It was a peaceful, nice spot and they were glad to find him there.
Spring wasn’t yet here, but the weather was still pleasant for a winter in the Blue Mountains. Wrapped in his coat, Kíli was sitting just as Myrna thought. The nearest street dim light couldn't show Kíli's face staring at the ground. Walking quietly toward him, Fíli sat on the ground next to his brother while Myrna sat in front of him.
“I’m sorry...” Kíli whispered. “For what? For running like an idiot? It’s not the first time!” his brother joked.
It’s the last day here so I can tell them, Kíli thought as he raised his head toward his brother. I’m not even sure if I’ll stay alive after this quest so...
“No. I’m sorry to fell in love with your betrothed,” he said like the concerned one wasn’t here. “Wait, what?” Fíli asked with a surprised grimace, glancing at Myrna a few times.
Initially, she didn’t want to take part in their discussion, but now she was too embarrassed to speak. Fíli took firmly his brother's shoulders before speaking again.
“Wait, wait, wait. What are you talking about?” Fíli said as he tried to understand his brother’s words. “Kíli?” Myrna tried because Kíli was still silent. “I really didn’t want you both to know about it. I-I didn’t want to bother you with my feelings. Fíli, I’m so sorry,” Kíli finally explained.
While Myrna had difficulty accepting his confession, Fíli sighed and ran his hand on his face. Then, he spoke to his brother. He admitted their relationship was totally fake from the beginning. As he also explained why they did it, Kíli’s face became more and more shocked.
“Our relationship was organized by our parents. I don’t love her, brother, so you don’t have to feel guilty about this,” Fíli calmly said.
Kíli found it hard to believe what he was hearing. It was too good to be true. He couldn't help but laugh weakly. All those years feeling guilty to love his brother’s betrothed for nothing. If their relationship was fake, maybe she doesn't love him, he thought as he turned his eyes to Myrna. And that explains all the dwarrowdam in Fíli’s bed...
Myrna was deep in her thoughts since he said he was in love with her. She looked back to all her free days spent together. She felt so stupid to not understand it. And most of it, she felt guilty, thinking how he could have suffered all this time. Her hand touched her chest where her heart was beating so far. How could I face him now?, she thought, still looking at the ground. He should hate me... Fíli’s words startled her, and Kíli reluctantly looked at his brother.
“How could you fall in love with her? You barely know her,” Fíli said seriously, trying to understand him. “Since when did you love her?” “Since she spitted her ice cream...” he confessed, blushing, as his brother's eyes widened. “Mahal Kíli, I’m so sorry!” Fíli said as he hugged his brother with all his strength. “I had no idea. You should have told me about it! From the beginning! You must have suffered so much, idiot!”
Fíli felt his brother laugh against his chest. He suddenly felt lighter. His heart was lighter than ever. All those years to hide his feelings were now in the past. He was glad that his confession with his brother went well. They both laughed once again when Fíli called his brother with a lot of idiot’s synonyms.
However, their laughs stopped when Myrna stood up. The two brothers felt stupid to forget her for few seconds. Honestly, it was not the problem. Myrna was used to them.
“I-I’m letting you both alone,” she spoke with her usual calm tone. “N-no!” Kíli cried as he grabbed her forearm. “I want to talk to you! Please don’t leave!” “We-we will talk again when Erebor’s quest is over...” Myrna said with difficulty, taking back her forearm. “Please rest for the night. Tomorrow is an important day.”
She was about to leave when she turned to Fíli to tell him: “Fíli, please promise me to stay with him whatever happens”. The blonde nodded and promised to her. Myrna tried to avoid seeing Kíli’s face with tears starting to run, but she couldn’t. She froze for a few seconds. She tried to say something, but no words wanted to come out of her mouth. She turned over and left the two brothers alone.
.
The night was long. As much for Kíli as Myrna. After talking for a long time outside with his brother, Kíli went to his bedroom but it was impossible for him to sleep. His departure for Erebor quest and his confession to Myrna was too much to him. He spent most of the night preparing the journey before falling asleep tiredly on his bed.
As for Myrna, she spent all night thinking about what Kíli said. He was in love with her from the start and for so long. She couldn't help but remember their walks in the forest, their meals on the ground, their talks about anything and everything, their very close bow training... The more she remembered, the more her cheeks burned. Also remembering how she left him in his brother's arms a few hours ago, she wasn't proud of herself. But she had to think before talking with him. However, waiting for him to Erebor recapture was a really, really bad idea. Especially if he doesn’t come out alive …
She felt more and more stupid as the hours passed. Plus, it also took several hours to understand that she was also in love with him. The sun started to rise when she understood it. Alright, I’m far more stupid than I thought, she though as she sat at the end of her bed. He had to leave for me to realize it. I’m sure he’s already left... How much time have I wasted?
Without realizing it, her tears filled her eyes. Myrna wasn’t the kind of person who wept for nothing. So, when Kíli suddenly opened her bedroom door, he got scared. Her eyes widened as he walked toward her.
“Oh no! Don’t tell me you cried all night because of me!” he said as he stopped just before her, not wanting to scare her. “I-I’m so sorry!” “Stop apologizing all the time,” she said with a cold voice. “I’m the one who should be sorry. Kíli, all those years... I’m so sorry... Oh! And what are you doing here? The departure!”
While Myrna was talking, Kíli crouched down before her. He silently watched her from below. When she finally looked at him, he raised his hand to slide it on her cheek and wipe away some tears.
“Fíli give me some time to talk to you before leaving. Are you alright? If you want me to go, I can-” “No!” she said more loudly that she wanted to, putting her hand on Kíli’s hand on her cheek. “Hum, I was crying just because I’m stupid.” “If I cried each time I was stupid, I would have died of dehydration for ages!”
Myrna couldn’t help but laugh. He couldn’t never stay serious for more than two minutes. He took his hand back and asked if he could sit next to her. She allowed him as she made space for him.
“Hum. So, I came to talk to you about yesterday. Everything happened so fast... I wanted to talk to you about my feelings for you one-on-one,” he started while he took her hands. “Hum, Myrna, amrâlimê, I have loved you since the first time I saw you. I know it seems strange, but it really happened. At first, I thought it would pass, especially because you were engaged to my brother. But, when you invited me on your free days, I couldn’t let this opportunity pass. I know I shouldn’t, but it was the only way to spend time with you. And, Mahal, I regret nothing! We had a great time together. Um... I know you’re still engaged to my brother. And I’m leaving in two hours, so you won’t have to stand me much longer.”
Kíli finally stopped. Even if she didn't show it, Myrna was surprised by his words. She waited until he finished talking. Hesitant, he resumed.
“Please, say something, Myrna. Even if you rejected me!” “You talk too much,” she only replied as she put her lips on his.
Kíli was far from expecting that. He was happily surprised, but he froze so long that Myrna moved back, embarrassing.
“Ah, um, sorry. I shouldn't. Maybe I-”
She didn’t have time to finish her sentence. He slid his hand behind Myrna's head to draw her towards him. His kiss had nothing to do with Myrna’s. Kíli kissed her with passion and ardour. His other hand went to her back to pull her against him. When they were forced to breathe, Kíli moved back a little, stroking her hair. Their cheeks were red from lack of air, embarrassment, and excitement.
“So, how should I take? Do you love me?” he asked with his stupid, arrogant smile. “Do I really need to tell you?” she provoked him, smiling too. “Of course! I won't leave until you answer me!” he said, losing his smile. “Then you will stay with me?” she continued to tease. “Myrna!” he complained with his puppy-eyes.
She was absolutely weak to his puppy-eyes, and he knew it; even before she understood she loved him. So now, she could only resist for a few seconds.
“Alright, listen well because I won't repeat it. I... I just understood during the night that I’ll miss you so much when you are gone. Honestly, I don’t even know if I’ll spend my free days like we used to spend together... So, I’m sorry I just understand I love you while you’ll leave soon. I-I love you Kíli. More than I think... And I cried for all the time we wasted for my stupidity...” “We didn’t waste anything! I loved all the time we spent together!” he smiled from ear to ear as he stroked her cheek. “Aaaaah! I’m sooo happy! Nothing could make me sad!” “Maybe the fact I’m still engaged to Fíli but we’ll talk about this after Erebor.” “Yes! After Erebor!”
His enthusiasm made Myrna laugh. They stared for a few seconds. Their eyes were full of stars and passion. They couldn’t wait any longer and kissed once again. Kíli was leaving soon, and Myrna felt it in the kiss. He was so eager that she lost her balance and fell on her back. Fortunately, they were on her bed.
The young dwarf took the opportunity to put himself above her and deepened the kiss. His tongue licked Myrna’s lips to ask permission to enter. One of his forearms allowed him to stay above her without crushing her, while his other hand stroked the side of Myrna's body from her shoulders to her hips. Myrna had one hand in Kíli’s dark hair while the other touched the clothes on his chest. When she opened her lips, he didn’t wait to slip his tongue inside. Their tongues intertwined with the sound of their moans. They barely breathed so Kíli’s lips went to her cheek, then her jaw and stopped on her neck. She was surprised by the moans she made when he lightly bit her neck.
“Sensible neck, I had to note it for after Erebor,” he whispered, chuckling. “I’m sure... you won’t forget it...” she had trouble saying as he bit her once again.
Before he firmly touched her buttock over her dress, Kíli gently removed the piece of cloth covering her shoulder and resumed his kiss path. Myrna’s head was totally empty. She couldn’t think of anything except Kíli’s caresses and kisses. She didn’t even know she could feel this feeling of happiness and desire. She was letting him do what he wanted until his lips went down to her cleavage and his hand passed under her skirt.
“We-we can’t...” she whispered under his caresses.
As if he hadn’t heard, Kíli pressed himself against Myrna and went back to her lips. “Just a little more...” he said as he stroked her naked thigh. Pressed like this, Myrna could feel Kíli’s bulge in his trouser. Yet, she knew his trouser was as thick as possible for the season. His kisses were also more and more intense and even if she didn’t want to, she moaned continuously.
“Kíli, please...” she articulated with difficulty. “Please what?” he said as he went to her neck again. “Please kiss me more? Please touch me more?” “Please stop... We-we can’t go further...” she tried to say as he bit her neck to silent her. “Do I have to wait more while I waited for years just to talk to you or spend time with you?” he said while he grabbed her undergarment over her buttocks. “Now I know you love me, I won’t be able to control myself. Your demand is impossible, amrâlimê.”
Myrna understood him. She really, really understood his desire, especially since they won’t see each other for months. But they couldn’t go further. That is inconceivable. She took Kíli’s cheeks with both hands and pulled his face in front of her's. She waited a few seconds to let him calm down. She felt his cheeks burn and she laughed.
“I’m sure you understand why I stopped you,” she said, smiling. “We definitely can’t go further.” “I know!” he grumbled as he avoided her eyes. “But I wanted you so much it hurts me. That literally hurts me if you look a little lower.” “Alright, I get it!” she laughed, her cheeks fully red.
Kíli got up from her and sat on the bed. Myrna did the same and avoided looking at his trousers, as much as possible. He gently stroked her hair and lost his smile.
“I wanted to ask you one more thing. Can you remove my brother's courting braid, and can I make another myself? Oh, um, if you accept that I court you, of course... I’m stupid, I should have started with it...” “I agree,” she replied, smiling before his confusion. “You can do it and I will manage the curious ones.” “Yes! You’re perfect! I’m sure you already knew it!” he said with his enthusiastic smile as he dropped a lot of kisses on her face. “Of course, but you can repeat it whenever you want!” she joked. “But you should hurry. I’m sure Fíli won’t wait for you all day!”
Kíli’s courting braid was beautiful. Myrna liked it a lot. She promised him to take care of it as long as he is gone. She quickly did the same for him with her most precious bead. “You have to keep it on you until we meet again,” she said as she braided. “Until we meet again alive...” she sighed as she was refraining from crying.
They kissed several times before Kíli left. Of course, it was difficult, but they also were in a hurry to meet again once Erebor was reconquered.
As if it will be an easy quest.
As if Thorin’s company would come out of it unscathed in the end...

Playing With Fire ~ Chapter Twenty-Five
Dunraven Pub - Modern AU

Thorin leaned against the bar, watching Leda across the room with his sister and sister-in-law, and even his niece, as they sat on the sofa laughing about something. She fit in perfectly. She was his One.
“Thorin,” Frerin came up to him, “can I talk to you a moment?”
Thorin peered over at his brother, whose expression was far more serious than he’d seen in a long time. “Sure. Everything okay?”
Frerin moved around behind the bar and bent to open the small fridge under it. He came up with two bottles of Yuengling’s chocolate porter and popped the caps before passing him one. “Not here. Out on the deck?”
Thorin nodded and followed Frerin back through the huge kitchen, to the French doors leading to the upper level of two decks. Snow still swirled softly through the air, and the only sound was the soft sweep of a gentle wind through the trees. It was peaceful and serene, as the property backed woods and the houses were set on acre lots, with large backyards and plenty of space between neighbors.
He leaned against the redwood railing. “What’s going on, Frer? You look like your dog just died.”
Frerin arched a brow as he gestured toward Thorin with his beer bottle. “So, I’m guessing Plan B didn’t work?”
Thorin grinned as he shook his head. “It didn't work. And you know something? I’m glad it didn’t. I was already falling for her and this just gave me the push I needed. The push we both needed because we were both too fucking chicken to admit the truth.”
“I’m happy for you, Thorin. You and Leda. The baby. It’s good to see you like this.” Frerin lifted the bottle to his lips. “Is Dís going to give you shit about it?”
“Nah. She knew. I bumped into her at the mall yesterday and sort of let it slip Leda was pregnant.”
“So, are you marrying her?”
“I want to.” Thorin lifted the bottle for a long pull.
Frerin just stared. “You—you do?”
Thorin nodded as he lowered the bottle. “Yeah. I asked her a few weeks ago, but she turned me down.”
“What the fuck?”
“No, it’s okay,” Thorin told him, setting the bottle on the railing. He turned to gaze out over the sloping expanse of Frerin’s backyard, forearms resting alongside the bottle, hands clasped. He looked over at his brother. “She’s still adjusting to being pregnant, so I’ll revisit it after the baby’s born. I’d marry her tomorrow if she wanted, but I’ll also wait as long as she needs.”
“So… you’re not the holdout?”
“No.” Thorin shook his head. “I’m not. And why are you looking at me that way? Is it really that much of a shock to you? I’m almost forty years old, I’ve finally found the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with, and we’re having a kid. I’d think you all would be besides yourself with joy over it.”
“Well, yeah, and we are—or we will be when it happens—but in all honesty? It’s something I never thought I’d live to see.” Frerin came up alongside him, mimicking his posture. “What happened to you never wanting all of this? You always said it wasn’t for you, you liked your life the way it was, and saw no reason to change it. So, why the change?”
“I met the woman I wanted to change it for. I don’t know, man. I can’t explain it. It started out just fun, like I told you at the time. No strings attached. Sex without having to pledge undying love and devotion, and it was amazing, Frer. Every minute of it was perfect. She didn't get all clingy and possessive, she wasn’t trying to get me to change my mind. Had my cake thickly frosted and enjoyed every bite of it.
“But,” he glanced over his shoulder, through the doors, where he could just see Leda sitting with his sister in the den, “the more I saw her, the more time I spent with her, the more I wanted to be with her and the more I didn't care about being with anyone else, I didn't want anyone else, and it just… it became much less about the sex and a lot more about just being with her. And if I hadn’t lost that damn condom, I’d have never had the balls to tell her how I felt.”
Frerin sighed softly. “I remember feeling like that.”
Thorin glanced over at his kid brother, whose voice had gone flat and emotionless. “Frer, what’s going on? What did you want to talk to me about?, Because I know it had nothing to do with my deciding to settle down with Leda.”
Frerin didn't say anything at first, but just stared off into the darkness. Thorin didn’t push, even as the snow began to fall harder and the breeze grew stronger. But, the longer the silence stretched, the more impatient Thorin grew. “Frer?”
“Toni and I are separating.”
That was not what he expected to hear.
“What?” Thorin turned toward him, one elbow on the railing. “What happened?”
“She’s cheating on me, Thor. Cheating as in still fucking the guy.”
Thorin could only stare, but managed to catch his jaw before it hit the deck. “What?”
“Yeah. Last fall, she started taking classes at the college for something to do while the kids are in school. She wanted to finish her degree and I thought it was a great idea, so I encouraged it. She had to take a lab science and got partnered up with this guy and… she’s been having an affair with him.”
“Oh, damn, man, I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, well… we haven’t told the kids yet, so… don’t say anything, okay? But, she’s moving out after the first of the year.”
“She is?”
“Yeah.” Frerin took a long swallow then lowered the bottle once more and added, “She fucked another guy. I’ll be damned if I’m moving out of my own fucking house. And she’s nuts if she thinks she’s taking my kids away.”
“Damn… when did you find out?”
“Right after Thanksgiving.” Frerin set the bottle on the railing and raked that hand through his hair. “And you know how I found out? My goddamn neighbor. Complimented me on my new Beemer.”
“Ouch.” Thorin winced. “What did you say to that?”
Frerin let out a mirthless laugh. “My dumb ass asked him what he was talking about, and I pointed to my car in the driveway. Then Max tells me he’s seen a really nice BMW in my driveway a few times a week since the end of fucking September. So, now I’m mildly curious and mildly pissed and when Toni gets home from class that night, I ask her who’s been parking their goddamn car in my goddamn driveway a few times a week since Halloween and she tried to play dumb but I wouldn’t let up and she admitted it.
“His name is Rory. He’s twenty years old. Twenty! And he’s been fucking my wife since Halloween.” Frerin’s voice grew harder with each word. “Only a few years older than her own son…”
“I’m sorry, Frer, I don’t know what else to say. That sucks.”
“Yeah. And the real killer is, do you know how many opportunities I’ve had? How many times at conferences, that I’ve had some fucking beautiful woman invite me up to her room. Mahal, man, I had the chance to have sex with an orthopod who looked like Scarlett Johansson and I didn’t fucking do it.” He shook his head. “And no one would've ever known if I had, Thor. No one. Not any one of this times would I have been caught. But I didn't because I’m a stand up guy and I love my wife. She doesn’t deserve it, but I do.”
Thorin reached over to rest his hand on Frerin’s shoulder. “Maybe you two just need some time apart and you can work it out.”
“Another guy’s cock was in my wife. Would you want to work it out if Leda was sucking someone else’s cock along with yours?”
The thought alone was enough to curdle his gut and he remembered how that notion twisted his guts when he and Leda weren’t exclusive. “No, probably not. I don’t know, man. I don’t know what I’d do. Probably want to kill both of them, to be honest.”
“Yeah, exactly. I’m not working it out at this point. A one night thing? That I could maybe—maybe—work through. But this has been going on for almost four months. Kid wasted no time getting into her pants, man.
“He’s twenty-two years old, Thor. He’s fucking kid. And he’s been fucking my wife in our bed. If I could toss her out tonight, I would. Merry fucking Christmas, huh?” He turned to lean back against the railing, staring at the back of the house. Through the doors, Thorin saw Toni come into the kitchen to tug open the refrigerator door and took out a bottle of wine. As it closed, she turned and saw him and Frerin, and her smile faded.
Thorin couldn’t hold back his glare. Toni had been part of their lives, part of his family, for nearly twenty years, but his loyalties would always lie with his brother. Had Frerin been the one to cheat, Thorin would have kicked his ass for his trouble, but since he couldn’t exactly do that to Toni…
Still, she had to know what he thought as he stared, as she turned to leave the kitchen in a hurry. Swinging back to Frerin, he said, “Let me know if you need anything, okay? Anything I can do, let me know.”
“Nah, you’ll have your hands full in a few months. Enjoy it, though.”
“Frerin— ”
“Seriously, you have no idea, Thorin. Enjoy all of it. Enjoy this time with Leda, enjoy the time when your kid is a baby and it’s the middle of the night and all you want to do is sleep. Enjoy when this kid is young enough to think you can do anything and everything. Enjoy when it’s just you and Leda and this little guy all snuggled up in bed on a cold night, listening the rain hit the roof. Enjoy watching her nurse him, or rock him, or any of it. Enjoy every single moment because you will blink and he’ll be in high school.”
Leda came into the kitchen and Frerin sighed softly. “And damn, man, she’s beautiful, Thorin. You’re a lucky guy.”
“She is and I am. Trust me, I know that.” Thorin couldn’t help his smile as she took a bottle of water from the fridge and then came to the door. He knew he was lucky, it took him forever to find her, and he’d found her without even knowing he sought her, and now everything was just perfect.
The door slid open and she said, “Frerin, Toni needs your help with something.”
“Wonderful. Why doesn’t she just get Rory to do it?” He picked up his beer bottle, drained it, and then said, “Excuse me, gotta go see what I’m needed for.”
As he passed by Leda, he smiled and bent to brush her cheek with a kiss. “I’m happy for you two, you know.”
“Thank you.” She offered up a confused look as she came out onto the deck while Frerin disappeared inside the house. As she tugged the slider closed, she said, “Did I interrupt something?” She glanced back at Frerin, adding, “And who’s Rory?”
“Trouble in paradise.” He reached for her when she got close enough, pulling her into his arms. “He and Toni are splitting up. Because of Rory.”
“Oh, no… that explains that, then.”
He gazed down at her. “Explains what?”
“Dís noticed my braid and pointed out that Toni no longer had hers.” Leda trailed her fingertip along the braid. “I guess that’s why. That’s too bad.”
“Don’t say anything. They haven’t told their kids yet. Frerin is waiting until after the holidays.”
“I won’t say a word, but it’s sad when a family breaks up.” She slid her arms about his waist, her head coming to rest again his chest.
Without thinking, he pressed a kiss into the top of her head. “Is that why you don’t want to get married?”
“I didn’t say I didn't want to get married ever, I’m just not ready to now,” she replied softly, shifting to peer up at him. “I have to admit, I’m kind of scared of the idea.”
He draped his arms about her, clasping his hands at the small of her back. “Why?”
“Why? I’ve told you about my past—family, relationships, all of it. It’s made me hesitant because I’ve seen how easily people betray each other.”
“Leda…”
“And not that I think you will, because I don’t, but… it still scares me.”
“Yeah, it scares me, too. All of this scares me.”
“It does?”
“Yeah,” he nodded, “it does. Why wouldn’t it?”
“Because nothing scares you.”
“Ha. If only. It does, Leda. We’re going to be responsible for this whole other person and neither one of us has a clue what we’re doing.”
Resting her chin again his chest, she gazed up at him. “I guess we’ll just have to fumble through it together until we figure it out, if we ever figure it out.”
“Mahal, I sure as shit hope we do. At least by the time the next one comes along.”
She started up at him, one delicate brow arching. “The next one?”
“Yeah. The next one. Oh,” he winked, “I should probably warn you, I’ll probably lose another condom at some point.”
“Ass.”
“Can you blame me? I like making babies with you.”
“You say that now.”
“Nah, I’ll say it a year from now, and a year from then, until I’m too old to get it up any longer.”
“Let’s just get through this one first, ‘mkay?”
He chuckled as he pulled her closer. “Fair enough. But, I think junior should have a brother or sister in time. Only children are weird.”
“They are not.”
“Sure they are.”
“Thorin.”
“What? They are.”
She shook her head. “You’re nuts, you know that?”
“Yeah.” He bent to brush her lips with his, then murmured, “I love you, mesmel.”
“I love you, too, kurdelê.”
He smiled. “Dís?”
She nodded. “Yeah. I asked her for an endearment and that was what she gave me, but she didn't tell me what it means, so please tell me I didn't just insult you.”
“Hardly. It means my heart of hearts. Dís wouldn’t steer you wrong. She likes you.”
“And that’s a good thing.”
“It is a good thing. My whole family likes you, Leda, if you haven’t noticed.” He drew his arms tighter about her as the wind picked up. “And you should really be inside. I don’t want you catching pneumonia out here.”
“It is a little chilly.”
The door opened and Dís smiled as she joined them on the deck. “Am I interrupting?”
“I’m just trying to convince Leda to go back inside. What’s up?”
Her smile faded. “Did Frerin tell you?”
“About Toni?” Thorin nodded. “Yeah. A few minutes ago.”
She sighed as she moved over to the railing. “It explains why Toni hasn’t worn her braid in a while. I mean, I knew she and Frerin were having problems, but—”
“Wait, what?”
Dís nodded. “Yeah. She told me over the summer, at their Fourth of July cookout, that she wasn’t happy. Frer was putting in such long hours and she was convinced he was cheating on her. I told her to talk to him, but I guess she decided to take matters into her own hands.”
“Was he?”
“I don’t know,” Dís shrugged, “and I couldn’t exactly ask him, could I? But honestly? I don’t think so. At least, I hope not.” She looked over her shoulder, first at the house, then at him. “She told me she doesn’t think she’s going to fight for custody, either. She’s just going to walk away from her own children to fuck some boy? I want to punch her.”
“Don’t punch her, Dís. Not a good idea.”
“Oh, I know, but it would make me feel better.”
She let out a low sigh and then glanced over at Leda, who gave him a squeeze and said, “I’ll let the two of you talk. You want your jacket, Thorin?”
“I’m fine, mesmel. Go and enjoy yourself as best you can.”
She brushed his lips with hers and then went back inside, and he turned to see Dís grinning up at him. “What?”
“It’s just nothing I ever thought I’d see. And it’s really nice to know I was wrong.” She shook her curly dark hair away from her face. “It’s so weird to think your family is just starting, while Frer’s is falling apart. Never in a thousand years did I think Toni would ever cheat on him.”
“Yeah, me, neither. But, you never know what goes on in another relationship.”
“Like when they drop a bomb on you that they’re having a baby.”
Thorin grinned as he leaned back against the railing. “It was a surprise to all of us, Dís. Me and Leda included. We—”
“You what?”
“We weren’t supposed to be anything serious,” he said softly, gazing at Leda through the French doors as she said something to Frerin and touched his arm. “Me and Leda. We were just fooling around when the mood struck.”
“Thorin.”
“What?” He turned to her, leaning one arm on the railing. “That was how she wanted it and I agreed to it. But the truth was, neither of us wanted to admit we felt something for the other one. It took her getting pregnant to… not necessarily force us to see it, but to force us to see what was building there. I was afraid I’d scare her off and she was afraid she’d scare me off, and neither one of us wanted to take the chance and tell the other one how we felt. And the universe took care of it for us.”
“And how do you feel?”
“I love her, Dís. I told you, I want to marry her. And we’ll do it eventually.”
“Because she’s pregnant?”
“No.” He turned back to her. “Because I love her. I love her and I can’t see myself with anyone else.”
“Good. That’s a much better reason.” She moved closer to him, reaching up to curve her hand against his cheek, the way their mother did when he was just a boy. “She is good for you, you know.”
He nodded. “I know she is. And I hope I’m good for her. And if I don’t get back inside and rescue her, she’s going to kill me.”
****
“Thorin?”
“Mmmm?”
“Are you asleep?”
“Yes.”
Leda rolled her eyes as she rose onto one elbow. “Oh, you are not.”
“I could be. But someone keeps talking to me.”
“Thorin?”
“I’m awake, mesmel, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong… per se. I just… I don’t know. I can’t sleep.”
“We have to work tomorrow. You should try.”
“I did try. And… I don’t know… maybe I’m hungry.”
“After everything we had at Frer’s?”
“I know, but… I think my stomach just growled.”
“Leda, it’s three in the morning.”
“I want a donut. Do we have any?”
“Donuts?” His pillowcase rustled as he shook his head. “I don’t think so.”
“I’d kill for a jelly donut.” She propped her head on her fist and with her free hand, traced a circle along his stomach.
“Are you serious? It’s three in the morning, Leda.”
“I know, but…” Her stomach did growl this time. “I’m really hungry.”
“And you want me to go get you a jelly donut?”
She pursed her lips. Three o’clock in the morning. Christmas night—well technically the morning after Christmas, but still… And snow still fell softly. “No. I don’t want you trekking out in this. Do we have anything sweet and kind of cakey?”
A low chuckle rose from him. “Cakey?”
“Yeah. Cakey.”
“I can go look.”
“No. I will. You go back to sleep.” She sat up and slid to the edge of the bed.
“Go back to sleep?” He reached over and snagged her about the waist with one arm. “I’m up now, because you want a jelly donut.”
“I like jelly donuts.” She couldn’t hold back her laugh as he tugged her back toward him, and wrapped his arm about her to hold her against him. She sighed softly, snuggling into him. “I didn’t meant to wake you.”
“Fibber.” He bent to her, his lips brushing hers as he added, “If you really want a donut, amrâlimê, I will go get you one.”
“No… this is just as good. Although, maybe I’ll go see if we have anything cakey.”
He pressed a kiss into the back of her head. “You okay? Or is it really a craving for a donut that’s got you awake at this hour?”
“I’m fine. I mean, I do want a donut, but that’s not why I’m still up.” She rolled over to face him. “I just… I can’t shut my mind off.”
“Why?”
She looked up at him. His eyes were closed, his fingers sweeping lightly along her back. “No, it’s silly. And we do have to get so—”
“Leda,” his eyes opened now, glittering like aquamarines, “what’s on your mind?”
“Everything, I guess.” She sighed softly. “It’s just… what if I’m terrible at being a mother?”
“You won’t be,” he murmured, shaking his head. “I promise you, you won’t.”
“But how we do know? I mean, I bet my mother thought she was a great one and we both know that’s not true.”
“That’s how I know. You won’t be that mother.” The sheets rustled as he rose onto an elbow and let his free hand come to rest on her stomach, his thumb brushing gently back and forth. “Leda, you’ll be a good mother. Don’t worry about that.”
“But what if I fuck it all up?”
“You won’t. I have faith in you, amrâlimê. You’re going to do just fine.”
She took a deep breath, meeting his eyes, and whispered, “I’m scared, Thorin. Really scared.”
“So am I. But we’ll be okay. No one knows what they’re doing when it comes to kids. It’s all trial and error.” His hand came to rest against her cheek, his thumb gentle as it grazed along her cheekbone. “And you will be a good mom, okay? You will. You are not your mother.”
“I hope not.”
“You aren’t.” He leaned over to brush her lips with his. “Now, try not to stress yourself out too much, okay? You’re going to do just fine.”
She sighed softly as he sank back into the pillows and tightened his arm about her. She fit so perfectly there, curved against him, and couldn’t believe there was once a time when she’d actually tried to avoid this.
“Thorin?”
“Mmmm?”
“Thank you.”
He gave her a gentle squeeze. “Thanking me? I’m telling the truth. This kid will never doubt for a moment he or she was wanted, that they’re loved. Don’t worry yourself, amrâlimê.”
She smiled as he pressed another kiss into the back of her head. With a soft sigh, she closed her eyes and snuggled closer to him. His arm tightened about her in response and he whispered, “Maralmizi.”
She reached to link her fingers with his. “Maralmizu.”
“Go to sleep, mimûna.”
She smiled. “You haven’t called me that in a long time.”
“I thought you didn't like it.”
“It’s not so bad.”
His arm tightened about her and she snuggled closer to him still, letting her eyes close as finally, her mind settled down and she was able to drift off.

Thorin x Oc (Chapter 1)
Word Count: 1304
Characters: Sisílla, Lord Elrond, Mention of Arwen, Mention of Lindir, Mention of Dís, Thorin Oakenshield.
Khuzdul Translation: badgûna = Dream-woman
Summary: 20 years, before the journey to Erebor came to view. An Oracle and a Dwarven King are awaken by a similar dream that gives them both a startling moment. It is forsaken for an oracle to fall in love, but this is one of many dreams where Sisilla learns of Thorin Oakenshield.
Tumblr media
Sitting on the banks edge near one of the many pools in Imladris sat a young woman with beautiful silvery white hair, draping down her back and cascading over her shoulders. Dressed in a soft, light and flowing lavender gown, Sisílla drifted her slender fingers over the rippling water and enjoyed the peaceful sound of music that filtered through the warm Mid-May air. Gentle and full of love, she could feel every note, chords, arpeggio and cleft in the song they were playing and closed her eyes to be encased in her own piece of calm and serenity.
As Sisílla closed her eyes though, a sudden jolt in the deepest part of her stomach made her gasp as if she received a punch in her stomach. Her eyes shot open as she began to see something. No, someone. A man. Or to be exact, a short man. A dwarf, with hair the color of a raven's feather and a few streaks of silver starting at his widow's peak. And eyes so blue he could place sapphires to shame as they would be dull crystals compared to his eyes. Then a mountain, one lonesome mountain. A Fire Drake dwelled in that mountain, and gold as far as the eye could see. A crown laid upon this dwarfs head as he sat on his throne. The rightful heir. King Under the Mountain. Sisílla finally was jolted back as she let out a hard gasp to breathe. Her breaths were shallow and short as if she had been under harsh rapids. A hand suddenly gripped her shoulder making her reach to grasp it as a life line, an anchor for her to remember she was still on Middle-earth. A familiar touch for her as the owner of the hand crouched down and made his presence known as he laid his free hand on the top of her head.
"Ni mellon, Prestad?" (My friend, is there trouble?)
Sisílla turned her head in the direction the voice was as her vision was taken. Her glassy and grey eyes held awe, shock, wonder and fear. Like a storm brewing to start, yet dissipating into wisps of  clouds.
"I have foreseen the prophecy. Erebor is to be reclaimed by the next heir of Durin's Folk, Lord Elrond." She said, her voice full of certainty.
The Elven Lord of Rivendell furrowed his brow, not out of suspicion, but of curiosity. Rising to his full length, he gently guided Sisílla to her feet and looped her arm with his own as they walked away from the pools to the main courtyards and plaza of Rivendell. He gently laid his hand over her own as they walked in silence, meaning he was debating if they should speak to the White Council or not. Her ability to foresee had never led them astray nor has she been wrong, but for the next son of Durin to take back the Mountain was madness in itself. The sickness that led to Thror's demise led to his son, Thraín, and possibly now to his son, Thorin II.
“Are you certain that it is time?” Lord Elrond asked as they made their way down the winding paths.
“I am.” Sisílla stated.
With another moment of silence as they walked, they soon arrived in his personal chambers. Guiding her to one of the high back chairs, Lord Elrond sat across from her and clasped his hands together, leaning his chin and began to think. When were they going to go back? The great dragon, Smaug had yet to be seen and small rumors came and went about his existence as it had been nearly forty years to the day that anyone had heard or seen the Fire Drake. Another long moment of silence passed until he came to a conclusion. Rising from his seat, Lord Elrond laid a hand on Sisílla’s shoulder.
“We shall discuss this in a later time, mellon. For now, let us find Arwen. I’m sure she would not mind your company." The Elven Lord smiled, earning a small smile from Sisílla.
As he called for Lindir who escorted Sisílla to find Arwen, Elrond went back to his personal chambers where he began to ponder what this vision that she saw meant? Was it just that? Or was there more behind the vision. Seeking counsel within his library, he began to rule out anything that could mean that Sisílla would leave the safety of Rivendell and be vulnerable in the near future.
~
Sharp, seething and a long dulling pain that ached in her lower regions, Sisílla laid upon a strong chest blanketed in sweat, light and some dark small bruises across her shoulders and neck. Scratch marks adorned his arms and chest but he didn't seem fazed. In fact, he seemed pleased, proud that he was adorned by these red marks, some of them a little tender. His large calloused hands rested across her back, stroking her gently and soothing her aching frame. A soft mewl came from her parted lips as she opened her eyes and although she could not see him, his presence was enough to send chills down her spine and her stomach to flutter.
"Amrálimé…" His voice thick and deep, full of desire and deep admiration.
A faint smile tugged at the corners of her lips which soon faded as the sudden feeling of cold and emptiness soon engulfed her. Suddenly, he, the bed, everything vanished from under her and was free falling. She screamed, trying to claw and grab something to stop her from falling to uncertain doom.
~
Sisílla jolted herself awake, covered in sweat and tangled in her bedding. Although she could not see anything  instinctively she looked around her room, trying to sense if anyone was in her room. She reached around her, hoping to feel emptiness or the same broad chest. With no warmth nor the deep voice calling out to her in the strange language, Sisílla calmed her pounding heart, untangled herself and laid back down to try and get some rest.
Under the hills, over the water and heading to The Blue Mountains. A dwarf sat up right with a short scream, panting heavily and reaching around to feel any scratches, any tender skin, anything to see if that woman was around. His hair a mess, sweat beading off his brow and an unnecessary problem under his covers. The sudden sound of someone knocking on his bedroom door made the dwarf jump and grab his sword that was near his bed and made sure his covers hid his little… well, a noticeable problem.
“Thorin, is everything alright?”
It was his sister, Dís. With a large sigh of relief, he leaned his sword against the wall where he always kept it and ran a hand over his face. He couldn’t tell his sister about this dream. It would be embarrassing and possibly hearing her talk about his possible badgûna.
“I’m fine… go back to sleep, sister.” Thorin finally replied after his sister knocked on his door again just a moment ago.
With a quiet sigh, he could hear his sister shuffle away and head to her bedroom while grumbling under her breath. With a slight chuckle, Thorin took a few deep breaths and began to ponder what the dream meant? Was it a sign of his possible One? Or was it just an arousing dream? Either way, he didn't want to think about it for he had to wake up early and head back to the village of Men to smith any remaining blades, metal work or ferry any horse shoes for those who requested his services. Laying back down and making sure he was finally comfortable, he closed his eyes and secretly hoping he would catch a glance of the girl with the silvery eyes once more.

MASTERLIST
THE HOBBIT
Hiraeth (ongoing)
(n): a homesickness for a home to which you can never return, a home which maybe never was
Hiraeth follows Branna, daughter of Rhai, as she joins the Company of Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the Dragon Smaug. She lives in Rockfells, a trading town in the Blue Mountain about a day’s ride away from Thorin’s Halls, the settlement of the displaced Dwarves of Erebor where Thorin, his sister Dís, and his nephews Fili and Kili live. Encountering Fili and Kili on a chance supply run, Branna quickly befriends the two princes, eventually meeting their uncle and pledging herself to his cause for reasons she cannot determine. But perhaps they have something to do with Thorin, the Dwarf who is just as lonely as she.
Thorin Oakenshield x Branna (OC)
Hiraeth Masterlist
The Ambassador (ongoing)
King Thranduil had sworn to her this would only be temporary. Tensions between the Elves and Dwarves were at such heights never felt since the reign of Thingol, and there was simply no way the King of the Woodland Realm could travel to the Lonely Mountain often enough to ensure whatever scrap of peace was left remained intact. Thranduil’s advisors had suggested implementing an ambassador in the Lonely Mountain, an Elf who could be trusted to navigate the tricky layers of Dwarvish court while maintaining the best interests of the people whom they represented. Who better to choose than Thranduil’s strongest negotiator, Lady Maerwen?
Torn from her home and placed in a callous Mountain with a mad King and a Prince with perhaps more similarities than differences, Maerwen must figure out a way to keep both Erebor and The Woodland Realm strong, before true darkness descends.
No specific romantic pairing with Maerwen (OC).
The Ambassador Masterlist
Descent (ongoing)
As the crow flies, Bree is only about two miles from the small black dot on the map labeled ‘Combe.’ There resides Ingrid Broderick, a farmgirl claiming descent from the city of Dale. She's not sure why a Wizard and two Dwarves appear on her stoop one morning, nor why they're so interested in her ancestors, but the reclamation of the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor and Dale could lift her family out of precarious poverty.
There's only one choice for her, really.

Broken Promises
Fíli x OC Tullaina
A/N: So I said I was in an angsty mood and unfortunately Tullaina is the victim of that mood.
Warnings: OOC Fíli under the influence of dragon sickness, angst, angst, angst (I’M not SORRY), Kíli being a good friend
Tumblr media
Complete and utter silence. Only the soft sound of paper sliding over paper could be heard when she turned a page every few minutes.
Tullaina savoured these rare moments where she could spend some time alone, curled up with a book in one of her many secret hiding spots.
When they finally settled down in Erebor, she had spent her first few months exploring the mountain, in search of quiet little nooks and corners like this one.
Her quiet time alone was short-lived however. Hurried footsteps could be heard in the distance, coming closer at an alarming pace.
“Tullaina?” A familiar voice called out.
Tullaina sighed. One less secret hiding spot, so it seemed.
She spotted Kíli standing beneath the high window sill she was resting on, his eyes wide with worry.
“Tulls! Come down from there,” he shouted, waving at her to spur her on. “Come on, hurry up!”
“What is it?” she asked him, and she jumped down with practised ease. If he was trying to persuade her into pranking Thorin again, by Durin’s beard, she was definitely going to give him a piece of her mind. A very pointy piece. In the form of an arrow in his butt.
“It’s Fíli,” he breathed.
Her blood ran ice cold and she was certain the color had vanished from her face. There were so many reasons why Kíli could be distraught about his brother's well-being and each and every single one of them was bad.
She followed her best friend through the corridors of the mountain, all the way to the Royal wing. The guards stationed there nodded at her when they passed, they knew her well, she was courting the crown prince after all. Tullaina had refused a room in the Royal Wing, feeling as if she didn’t deserve it, and instead settled for a chamber with the rest of the Company, a few hallways further down. Once Fíli and her were married, she was going to relocate to the royal chambers, but for now, she felt more at peace where she was.
Kíli halted in front of Fíli’s chambers.
“Will you finally tell me what’s wrong?” Tullaina asked him. “Is he hurt?”
He was completely fine this morning, he would spend the entire day doing his royal duties. That could hardly be considered dangerous, but you never know. He was a Durin after all.
“It came true…” he said, his voice low, as if he was telling her a secret. “He wanted to try it, even though Uncle said it wasn’t a good idea. But you know him Tulls, he always wants to prove himself. A-and it went well, he didn’t feel anything at all the first few times he went there but now… You have to get him out of it, Tulls! He’ll listen to you!”
“Kíli, what are you talking about?” she questioned him. Why couldn’t he get to the point for once in his life?
“It’s the dragon sickness…”
She didn’t wait another moment, her hands flew to the doorknobs and she pushed the heavy double doors open. It could not be true. He couldn’t… he promised.
Fíli stood leaning over his desk, in full regalia, something he normally hated. When he had to wear it to formal events, he never stopped complaining. How it was too heavy, how it made him stand out, he didn’t like being the center of attention, ... Now he seemed to wear it with pride.
He was studying the documents in front of him as if his life depended on it. His facial expression was stoic, but his eyes were full of fire.
“Fíli?”
His head snapped up and his eyes darkened as soon as he saw who dared to disturb him. Tullaina had to fight the urge to take a step back. This wasn’t her Fíli. Kíli was right...
“You!” he hissed. “What are you doing in my chambers? How dare you come in here!”
“Fíli, I’m your friend,” she said, carefully choosing her words. “I’ve been here plenty of times. On your invitation. We’re-we’re courting, remember?”
“It’s Prince Fili to you.”
“Excuse me?”
“You’ve heard me.”
“Fíli- prince Fíli,” she corrected herself, making a small curtsy, even though she didn’t like how he was talking to her. It was best not to antagonize him when he was like this. Kíli was right, she might be the only one to snap him out of it. “I was wondering if you wanted to come with me for a walk? Some fresh air will do us both some good.”
He snorted, but it sounded off. “I know what you’re trying to do,” he said, pointing at her while he rounded his desk. “While we’re away, my brother has the chance to snatch the documents and gather information. He’s setting you up to this, didn’t he? He is jealous, he always has been. But I’m not letting him take my crown,” he mumbled the last words to himself, before he crossed his arms behind his back and started pacing back and forth.
“You don’t mean that!” Tullaina gasped. She never heard Fíli say one bad word about his brother before. Well, that was a lie, but it was always in jest, he never meant it.
He strode towards her until he was standing right in front of her. She balled her fists to keep her composure. This was Fíli. He would never hurt her, even if he was under the influence of the gold. He would not hurt her.
“You’re working with him, aren’t you! You conspire against me!”
“I would never do that, Fíli. I love you!”
He swirled around at her words. His voice changed, it deepened but instead of being warm like honey, it felt as if the room turned colder with every spoken word.
“You don’t love me! What a fool I was! Oh, you tricked me into believing you loved me, while in reality you’re in love with the crown! With Prince Fíli!” he shouted, opening his arms to show himself in all his royal glory. “Not with Fíli, son of Dís!”
“Please, Fíli! This isn’t you, it’s the dragon sickness. Please, you have to wake up! Open your eyes!” Tullaina pleaded. In her head she kept repeating that it wasn’t the real him, he didn’t mean what he was saying.
“Oh but my dearest Tullaina, my eyes are finally open! Isn’t it odd that you never told me you loved me until after we reclaimed Erebor? Not before I officially earned my title?” He tilted his head. “You want the gold, don’t you?”
“No!” she cried, now fighting back the tears. She wanted to leave, before Fíli could say something that really hurt her but Kíli was counting on her to fix this. She had to stay, she had to try and get him back.
She looked at him and smiled, trying to put him at ease. He always said how he loved her smile.
“Remember when you told me you loved me for the first time? How nervous you were? And the kiss we shared? It was definitely not our first kiss,” Tullaina chuckled. She pleaded with her eyes for him to remember that moment, to remember how he felt. His feelings for her should be strong enough to bring him back.
Fíli was struggling. She saw it and her heart filled with hope. He was coming back to her.
“Do you remember our first real kiss?” she tried. “You wanted to show everyone I was yours.”
The corners of his lips twitched and the wrinkles around his eyes scrunched a little. He remembered. Just as Tullaina thought he was back to his own self, he shook his head and the darkness in his eyes returned.
“Our courtship? You can forget about that! Who would want you,” he mocked her. “You don’t even look like a proper Dwarf! You’re lucky we’re allowing you to stay here. You know you don’t belong!”
“Fíli, that’s enough!” Kíli’s voice boomed from the doorway.
He had seen how Tullaina slowly lost her composure, the tears silently rolling over her cheeks, her lower lip trembling and he could no longer stand there and do nothing.
He watched her bow to Fíli, straighten her back and although her voice was shaking, she spoke with enough confidence to get her message across. “I have loved you since Ered Luin. I’ve always been there for you, every step of the way, like you were there for me. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for you. So if your Highness wants me gone, out of his halls and his bed, I would not dare go against his wishes.”
Tullaina turned around and dashed out of the room. When she passed Kíli in the doorway, he saw how devastated she was. It broke his heart and he couldn’t help feeling responsible for it. It was him who pushed her to do this, he knew it could go horribly wrong and still he thought it was a good idea to involve Tullaina. He really thought she would be the key to break the spell.
He turned to his brother, who was still standing in the exact same spot, his expression emotionless. Kíli felt rage burning in his chest. Fíli promised he would never hurt her. When he confessed his feelings for Tullaina to him, that was Kíli’s only condition. Don’t hurt her. At least now he could keep his promise to him.
“Dragon sickness or not, I swore to you that if you’d ever hurt Tullaina, you would have to deal with me,” he roared while making his way to Fíli. “And I always keep my promises!”
He swung his right arm and his fist collided with Fíli’s cheekbone before the Heir of Erebor had the chance to react.
Kíli expected him to blow up after that, but to his surprise Fíli stood frozen in place. After a few seconds he slowly lifted his hand and touched his cheek, wincing when his fingers made contact with the skin beneath his eye.
Fíli stared at his younger brother in disbelief. Kíli noticed how his kind blue eyes had returned. The darkness was gone. His brother was back.
Then something happened that Kíli never witnessed before. Thick, wet tears formed in Fíli’s eyes before he closed them, causing the tears to fall. It didn’t take long before Fíli was sobbing. Kíli didn’t hesitate and hugged his brother in an attempt to comfort him.
After a few minutes Fíli seemed to calm down and finally opened his bloodshot eyes.
“What have I done?”
