Done! I've plotted the entire novel!
Tumblr media
If you have 80% of a book plot and a bunch of thin threads, I fully recommend just buying a pack of sticky notes and finding a wall to stick them on. Pick a colour for the plot and different ones for chapters, themes, notes and anything else you need and just get it all up there.
It offers such great flexibility in moving bits of the plot round and figuring out what happens and when. I started out with a strong beginning and end - I just needed to weave the middle bit together. I now have the full thing! So definitely recommend doing this if you're struggling with plotting and weaving themes in.
Now that this is done, I feel like I can start writing now! This book is based on a dream I had (not like Twilight omg) and some life lessons I wish people had told me when I was younger.
It covers things like finding and choosing your family, coming to terms with the fact that the people you are related to aren't always the best people (and coming to terms with that), finding validation and self acceptance and learning to let go of people or things that would otherwise do you harm. All in a fantasy setting! Woo!
Oh and it is also very queer.
I love the characters and messaging and will post updates as I go because eventually - I will need test readers!
Now to come up with a fucking title.

listen I just think it’s interesting that after finding out about a fem!aziracrow flashback, the fandom is suddenly so excited about lesbian representation. but when we were given actual canon lesbians this season they were met with nothing but hatred & weird theories from this fandom.
now that it’s gonna be the two cis men playing lesbians everyone is excited for rep, but when it was actual older women playing lesbians it was: ‘they’re ugly, their storyline is pointless, and they have no chemistry.’
i’m all for nonbinary aziracrow & them being able to present as whatever gender they want, but let’s not start calling david tennant and michael sheen the lesbian rep of good omens… please.

Just had to draw them for Pride because they are my newest OTP and, you know, queer, but wanted something different than just them holding the flag, so I used the lesbian pride flag as a pallet

Miss Pauling from Team Fortress 2 is confirmed to be a lesbian! A lot of people still don't believe it though so today I'm gonna show you guys all the information about it because I think it's cool :]
Cw: nudity (from Zhanna and Soldier in the TF2 comics, as well as Scout's mom in Meet the Spy (you'll see why that's important). Its not graphic but I thought to give a warning anyway just in case.)
The most direct acknowledgement of this is the fact Jay Pinkerton, a writer at Valve, said it in response to a comment on Pauling and Scout, saying Jay had a better idea for her, which was to make her a lesbian, but there were no female characters to ship her with yet.
Tumblr media
Now you may ask "What about Scout? Didn't she date him?" After Expiration Date they may have gone on a "date" (date being Scout going on random jobs Miss Pauling has), but you can see in the comics that take place afterwards, they were never actually romantically involved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It also comes off that way in Miss Pauling's voice lines towards Scout. (These are taken from the official TF2 wiki)
"Hey Scout. First, 'No' to whatever you're about to ask. I've got a job for you."
"Scout, Pauling here. Wrap up whatever you were bragging about and look at this."
"Scout, it's Pauling. Whatever stupid thing you're doing, stop it. I've got work."
"Scout, it's Pauling. I need something done quietly. Scout? Quietly."
"Engie, it's Pauling. Is Scout there? Cough if he's there. I've got a job for you. Not him."
Then there's the Teufort Reader, a page on the official TF2 website. It has ad listings from different characters. Both Pauling and Scout have listings for dates, but Scout enforces that the caller should be a woman while Pauling keeps who she is looking for genderless, meaning it doesn't necessarily have to be a man who calls. (I edited both listings onto an image, so that's why it's wonky looking lol.)
Tumblr media
More examples (which is mostly my interpretation) of her possibly seeking future female partners (and ignoring male advances) is in her Tough Break voicelines. In some, she talks about going to many woman events which could be a hint at her sexuality, others she rejects male related stuff. Once again I copied these from the official TF2 wiki.
(whispering) "Hey, it's Pauling here. I'm at the Teufort Ladies Book Club and I'm the only one who hasn't actually read Belinda...so it's just about relationships, right? Guy meets girl, love stuff, happy ending? It's a good thing, right? I'm gonna tell everyone how it really, really brings the two as a couple."
[Scout: Oh, oh, and...(dice clatter)...not too shabby!] "Pauling here. I'm trying to teach Scout Gargoyles and Gravel. [Yeah!] Ugh, no Scout, there's no such thing as a Muscle Wizard." [Yeah whatever.] "No you can't beat an Orc by doing push-ups at it. Look, please, please put your shirt back on. Scout, stop flexing. Scout. Scout! Stop flexing."
"Hey did you know a gun show's a real thing? I'm at one with Heavy right now." [Heavy: Is perfect, this is gun.] Oh wow, what's the gauge on that? Yeah, Scout's been saying he's going to take me to one for years, but all he does is shove his stupid arms in my face. Anyway, I've got something for you."
"Hey's it's Pauling. Sorry for the noise, it's Ladies Night at the Cap Point, and I misunderstood what that meant." [Hey what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?] "I'm trying to get someone killed for money. Can you give me a second? Sorry about that. Anyway, take a look."
"He-hey, sorry about the reception, I'm on a ladies safari in the middle of a forest. Listen, a contract came in..." [I'm being mauled to death by a tiger! Ahhh!] "Lady, would you please keep it down! I'm on the phone!"
Another small example, once again more of my interpretation, is on a TF2 blog post from the website where the Administrator starts reading one of Miss Pauling's gun themed woman magazines. The blog post says:
"I found the answer, in all places, in one of the insipid gun-themed women's magazines Miss Pauling leaves lying around, where I stumbled on an article about self-improvement."
You could tie this to a historical context because the 60s and 70s had a rise in LGBTQ oriented magazines, many lesbian ones created in 1971 and running through the 80s. It's quite possible that Pauling would read them as Team Fortress 2 takes place around 1968 to 1973.
The folder Miss Pauling has in the Gun Mettle update is labeled "Scout's mom" meaning she has the nsfw of Scout's mom that Spy lays out in Meet the Spy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next section goes more into the comics. There are many panels that could imply Pauling's growing liking towards her new teammate, Zhanna. In this first image I think it shows where the liking began, from Zhanna talking to Pauling, making her blush in the last frame (which too could be embarrassment, but someone pointed it out to me as a possibility, so I decided to add it).
Tumblr media
Next is towards the end of the comics. Zhanna and Soldier fight naked, covered in honey as a fighting strategy, and Pauling and Scout have caught them doing so. Scout is disgusted and leaves, while Pauling is interested and decides to stay and catch up later. Note how Zhanna is closest to them. Panels are edited to be side by side and cropped a bit for image space.
Tumblr media
Next is towards later on when Pauling is calling the Administrator and Zhanna wonders what she's doing. Pauling then confides in her with her problems, afterwards saying she sees Zhanna as part of the team now after Zhanna gives her advice. She's comfortable around Zhanna.
Tumblr media
A few pages later, Pauling's disgusted by Soldier and him being naked, meaning he was not likely who she was looking at.
Tumblr media
Another thing is that people think that Pauling could've developed a crush on the Administrator in their time together over the years Pauling worked for her. She made comments on how Helen (Administrator) was not so bad when you got to know her and we also learn Pauling had trusted her the whole mission without knowing what Helen's plan was. Pauling was blindly following and trying to stay loyal to what Helen wanted because she thought Helen would have a place for her at the end.
In Richter Overtime's video on the possible TF2 comic 7 leak from 2018, there was a scene where Pauling allegedly kisses the Administrator. This is in no way canon, but just in case it is revealed that something like that is in the final comic, I just think it would be good to note.
youtube
Ashly Burch, Miss Pauling's voice actress, came out as pansexual in July 2022, noting that she has played many LGBTQ characters.
(Also she was a writer on Expiration Date. This means Pauling not liking Scout due to being lesbian could've totally been intentional! Along with her playing as LGBTQ characters, she's also written for them! Like Life is Strange and Mythic Quest.).
Tumblr media
The Romana version of the official TF2 wiki has most of these points on Pauling being gay on it. I copied down the text from that section, but recently I found that Pauling's Romana page was removed from the wiki.
"According to a tweet by Jay Pinkerton, writer of TF Comics, Miss Pauling is gay.
This may be why she insists the Administrator is 'not so bad when you get to know her'.
Part of a voice line added in the Tough Break update has her discuss an interest in Ladies' Night while fending off a man: 'Sorry for the noise, it's Ladies Night at the Cap Point, and I misunderstood what that meant.' [Hey what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?] 'I'm trying to get someone killed for money.'
Another voice line excerpt from Tough Break, when she's at the Ladies' Book Club: '...so it's just about relationships, right? Guy meets girl, love stuff, happy ending? It's a good thing, right?'
No other Valve employee has either confirmed nor denied this claim to date (The tweet was made June 19, 2015), leading many to believe that Mr. Pinkerton's tweet was just a way to inflame the community. However, since Mr. Pinkerton is a lead writer of the comics and his word is trustworthy, there is no reason not to accept this at face value.
The tweet was made in response to a fan asking if Scout and Miss Pauling would become canon, and was preceded with Mr. Pinkerton stating he had "better plans" for her. This could imply that she may meet a love interest in an upcoming installment."
And finally, I'm taking this from someone else's post, but you can color-pick the lesbian flag colors off of one of Pauling's post cards!! (And bonus, you can color-pick the genderfluid flag off of her Halloween design!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's it! That's all the information I have so far, compiled for everyone's viewing and reference pleasure :]
Please let me know if I missed anything and I'll add it! Thank you for reading, if you made it this far, that's awesome. I'll be updating this post occasionally to fix formatting issues, so don't be confused if things change! I hope I can be of help with your Valve lore and information. And if you haven't seen it, I have a list compiling all of Valve's queer characters!

Of course, dear anon, I can do that :)
Soon
Words: 1.5 k
Characters: Dís x OC
Warnings: Implicit homophobia, hesitation, slight sadness
Prompt: Lesbian Rep
Tumblr media
“I am not sure about this,” Sami whispered, her hand twitching nervously as she smoothed down her formal dress. “You are a princess.”
“Sure,” Dís replied with a bright smile, “and, with you by my side, I’m even a queen. Or do you think me in any way inferior to my mulish brother?”
Seeing the challenging gleam in those sapphire eyes, Sami had to chuckle despite the debilitating knot in her stomach—after all, it had been the pugnacious resilience of the dam at her side that had first caught her attention and then her heart.
“Evidently not,” she replied soothingly. “Thorin has nothing on you—he’s a mere hill compared to a mountain, he’s but a coin and you’re a treasure…”
Dís threw her head back and laughed so heartily that Sami believed that the very foundations of the Lonely Mountain must have been echoing with her joy.
“We share a complexion though, so you better not say that he’s unattractive,” Dís added with a wink before taking Sami’s shaking hand and encasing it safely in her own broad palm.
“I have never given the king much thought, I must admit,” Sami conceded with a half-hearted shrug.
She had been born on the road and had never known Thorin very well as they had lived exceedingly different lives—as a male dwarf and the heir to a lost throne, he had been preoccupied mainly with the defence and the well-being of his people while Sami had known her own, much more intimate and much less consequential struggles.
Dams were rare and precious—this had been impressed upon her for as long as she could remember and while she had never been interested in warfare, she had dabbled in different crafts in the desperate hope to escape the bane of matrimony by becoming indispensable to some master or another.
Indeed, for reasons she had not been able to fully understand at that time, the mere thought of taking a husband and bearing his children filled her with cold dread, and Sami would have done much to avoid ending up in a situation in which her only choice was to either forfeit her happiness or humiliate her parents in an unforgivable manner.
When she had not shown much talent or exceptional skill in any of the domains she had been looking into, her parents had made a desperate last-ditch effort to find her a place where she would be safe by petitioning the young prince to allow their daughter to become part of his sister’s entourage.
Sami had—until that day—been highly doubtful when it came to the unwavering faith her family had in Mahal; she had found it extremely unlikely that some remote entity would truly take an interest in someone as unimportant as she was, but—upon glimpsing Princess Dís for the first time—she was converted lastingly.
Dís had been and still was the single most beautiful being Sami had ever beheld. Regal in deportment and speech, she had a fiery temperament and a quick wit that had led to many an epic squabble with her esteemed brother.
From the very start, they had gotten along splendidly. Under Dís’ care, Sami slowly started to thaw out of the fearful immobility she had maintained all her life, terrified of disappointing or dishonouring her parents by speaking up at the wrong moment or contradicting the wrong person.
Being of the uncontested royal line of old, Dís had never known such qualms—she was an accomplished diplomat and a charming host, of course, but she didn’t hesitate to make her voice and her opinion heard either.
Moreover, they soon discovered that they shared a feeling of frustration linked to the fact that—as female representatives of their family tree—they were side-lined and pushed aside much too often in favour of counsellors and leeches who did not have the realm’s and the population’s best interest at heart.
From this helpless anger as much as from the many hours spent in companionable study, arose a deep and steady friendship and soon, Dís and Sami relied upon one another unconditionally.
Neither one knew when their complicity had bloomed into something else—more illicit and far more passionate than was conceivable for two well-born ladies—it had been a slow development that endured Dís’ wedding and widowhood, the birth of her sons, and the fateful departure of the company to reconquer Erebor, but, throughout the lonely months of waiting and fretting, they had created a bubble of intimacy and mutual solace that they were now loath to burst.
“This is a bad idea, Dís, my beloved,” Sami tried to reason with the one she had devoted her whole life to. “You are the king’s sister, the heir’s mother—you are the most precious of invaluable dams in the kingdom…and I am but me, a child abandoned to the endless mercy of your house. This cannot be how I repay Durin’s line for their generosity.”
Scoffing, Dís tightened one of her braids. “I have never had a bad idea in my life,” she declared decisively and lifted Sami’s hand to her lips. “I am my own person and I have my own mind.”
“Please,” the other pleaded, her eyes sparkling like gems slumbering at the bottom of a lake. “Remember all the practical jokes we’ve played on your brothers—your intuition is far from flawless.”
“I stand by my actions,” Dís asseverated. “I always do.”
With a deep sigh, Sami allowed herself to let her brow sink against Dís’ shoulder; she loved the princess for her bravery and her self-assured determination, but she was also afraid that her own selfish wish to be with one so far above her own station would end up costing Dís, the king, and their fragile kingdom more than they were able to lose.
The sound of approaching steps echoed from the high walls and Sami jerked upright, staggering back a few paces instinctively—she desperately tried to ignore the hurt flaring in those deep, blue eyes she so loved, telling herself that it was all for the best if they were not caught unawares by a passing patrol or some tardy guests on their way to the feast.
“I have done my duty,” Dís hissed, “and I deserve to live my life the way I want.”
“For the love you bear your brother, in the name of your duty towards your people,” Sami begged under her breath, “do not speak up just yet. The realm is fragile and Thorin needs you by his side—a symbol of hope, of fertility, of a bright future—and we owe him our silence. For now…”
She knew and adored the scowl of impatience spreading across Dís’ beautiful face and so, Sami smiled through the tears threatening to overflow from her burning eyes.
“I will be there, by your side, the way I always have—I will not desert you to let you fulfil a destiny we had almost given up on all alone,” she promised vehemently, tucking the bead Dís had plaited into her hair under a cluster of elaborate braids discreetly. “Let the dust settle, love, and then, we’ll reevaluate our situation.”
“I am sick and tired of their expectations dictating my life!” Dís exclaimed passionately.
Throwing a quick glance down the corridor to make sure that they were indeed alone, Sami leaned forward and pressed a short but passionate kiss onto that displeased moue.
“We’ve played this game for too long not to know the rules, dear,” she then reminded Dís gently. “We cannot force them to change their mind. Don’t do it for them—do it for those you’ve almost lost and who have a right to heal and find their bearings before being ambushed with such potentially distressing news.”
“I shall tell Thorin,” Dís insisted. “I want him to know.”
“You may do that,” Sami agreed, “and I am sure the king would also recommend a path of caution and political astuteness.”
“Of course, he would,” Dís groaned. “He’s the last person who should lecture me on the obligations of wedlock. I am a widow!”
Pressing Dís’ hand tenderly, Sami pulled her down the hallway carefully. “Soon,” she promised, letting go of that hand she had held through their darkest nights as they arrived in front of the doors to the banquet hall.
Demurely, she stepped behind Dís, her head bowed and her eyes glued to the stone floor—at least on the surface, she would slip back into the role for which she had been chosen and trained.
Sami decided to do her best to keep up appearances and buy everyone more time to properly convalesce and grow accustomed to this new world they were going to build.
“Soon,” Dís repeated with much more decisiveness and fire.
The doors swung open, and the noise swelled like an ocean around them.
“Dís, my dear sister,” the king croaked, still leaning heavily on his intricately decorated cane. “And this must be your friend.”

Review: Death Becomes Her by Kayla Shaggy
CW (for review): mentions of suicide and depression
*Death Becomes Her is a paranormal fantasy comic about a young woman who feels dissatisfied with her life until she finds a path to immortality*
My first impression was that I LOVED the cover art. I’m obsessed with the bright red color and the creepy bugs on the back. I love the expression on Marianna’s face. She seems sad/tired and maybe a bit uncertain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also really liked how depression was portrayed. The CWs mentioned suicide so I was expecting that, but it was actually Mariana’s lack of energy and frequent spacing out that made me feel *seen* in a way I wasn’t expecting.
Tumblr media
Overall, I really liked each of the characters that were introduced. Mariana got the most attention (since it’s just the introduction), and I loved how her motivation for seeking immortality was fleshed out. She didn’t think she had enough time to accomplish her goals, and immortality solved that problem for her.
The main plot line of the story so far is about Mariana becoming immortal. I’ve read my fair share of vampire stories, so I thought I knew what to expect, but I found Mariana’s story especially unique. I definitely didn’t expect Mariana to seek immortality out on her own (most stories that touch on immortality have a firm “death is part of being human and a good thing” stance), so the fact that she sought it out and *chose* to leave mortality behind was surprising!! I’m really curious to see what Mariana’s experience is like, and whether she’s happy with her decision as the story goes on.
Another plot line introduced in the first issue was the potential romance between Mariana and a mysterious older woman named Annalise. I loved the chemistry between these two. In the brief time they met, they already had me side-eying the page and laughing at their dynamic. Annalise’s deadpan demeanor was a cute compliment to Mariana’s shy yet eager personality.
Tumblr media
Issue 1 of Death Becomes Her was a delightful introduction to the story. It’s perfect for fans of paranormal fantasy stories that delve into dark topics.
I’ve read two other of Kayla Shaggy’s works, and this was definitely my favorite. I can tell the author has honed her art style and storytelling skills. If you like fantasy comics with lesbian main characters, I cannot recommend her works enough.
Death Becomes Her and Shaggy’s other comics can be found on her website at kaylashaggy.gallery
CW (for comic): references to suicide, depression, blood, death, insects, implied cannibalism

Seventeen-year-old Eleanor is the least likely person in Salem to believe in witchcraft—or think that her life could be transformed by mysterious forces. Ostracized by her classmates after losing her best friend and first love, Chloe, Eleanor has spent the past year in a haze, vowing to stay away from anything resembling romance.
But when a handwritten guide to tarot arrives in the mail at the witchy souvenir store where Eleanor works, it seems to bring with it the message that magic is about to enter her life. Cynical Eleanor is quick to dismiss this promise, until real-life witch Pix shows up with an unusual invitation. Inspired by the magic and mystery of the tarot, Eleanor decides to open herself up to making friends with Pix and her coven of witches, and even to the possibility of a new romance.
But Eleanor’s complicated history in Salem continues to haunt her, and she is desperate to keep Pix from finding out the truth. Eleanor will have to reckon with the old ghosts that threaten to destroy everything, even her chance at new love.
