Regarding the whole "Fandom Is An Escape, so why should I have to care this much about misogyny/racism/ableism/transphobia/etc." thing. On Characters' Sexualities; Representation and Phobias.  The Case of Queer Representation in Strange Way of Life (and other films)

I was hesitant to do this essay for a long time.

On one level, we live in a very polarized world and my essay is going to be diplomatic.  Unfortunately, in polarized times like this, this means that I am going to be perceived as siding with the opposite side of your position rather than analyzing the whole thing from a neutral angle.

It also has to do with a queer (and the first draft seems to present them as gay.  Let's see if that changes as the story evolves, which will be impacted by now seeing the movie and interpretations) fanfiction where I pair Silva with another cowboy I have interpreted as queer through the years (Slow West's Silas Selleck.  More on him later).

OK, As you probably saw from the second paragraph, you probably know where I am headed with this.  There was one recent Tumblr entry that was posted as I was starting to write that nailed the same thesis of here.  Like the author, I do think Almodovar left the specifics of Silva and Jake's queer sexualities purposefully ambiguous and open to interpretation.  He never defined Strange Way of Life as a gay Western but a queer Western, and I do think that it is equally valid interpreting Jake and Silva as either gay or bisexual.

That unless one believes people can only be straight or gay and sexuality is that clear cut.

(I may argue that Almodovar has left some ambiguity in the nature of the queerness of some characters all along his, with many of his characters left free to identify as bisexual.  This is nothing new for him)

I also get that the gay fans of Pedro want a representation with his character that they hadn't been able to have before.  My bisexual bias make me think of Oberyn as possible queer representation, but I am not a gay man.   So I get they finally getting Pedro to have a character that represents them.   And based on historical facts, it is true that many gay men did get married to women and have children, and some had affairs with women to repress their desire for people of the same gender.  In fact, this is an argument I have made for Slow West's Silas Selleck, a character I read as gay. (*SPOILER ALERT*) I have had counterargued that Silas is "straight" because it was implied that he married Rose at the end and adopted the Swedish Children.  I made an analysis of it being a convenience arrangement and possibly the adoption of Children making Silas not obligated to sleep with Rose.  A similar argument could be said about Silva (except with him having a son).

However...  My problem is that some of these gay people asking for gay representation, use biphobic language.  Let me get out of the way that I am not talking about people saying it is not biphobic to interpret Silva as gay (and just leave it at that).  I also get the not liking Silva with a female character if can't relate to that.  BUT saying that interpreting Silva as bisexual "cheapens" the queerness of his (and for that matter, Jake's) characters or "corrupts" their story, ignores bisexual men as queer people simply because bisexual men can also desire women.  It's as if the possibility of desire women taints them and negates their queerness.    As a bisexual woman, I have gone through that crap from Lesbians for years.

(There is also the issue of gay people not believing that bisexual men exist, but to be fair, I have not seen Silva's sexuality critiqued from this angle.  It would be also a case of bi erasure if it is).

GENERAL BI MEN REPRESENTATION

There is another fact.  This is not a matter of "homophobic heterosexual women against gay representation."  Let's face it, there is a lot less bisexual male representation than gay men representation in media.  Only now we have more with Alex Claremont-Diaz in Red White and Royal Blue and Nick Nelson in Heartstopper.  They are more unambiguous and the representation comes with more casual mentions of being bi (either by the characters or the narrative).  But even with these characters, I have seen tjings like "Nick Nelson was just an adolescent, too young to figure out his sexuality.  He has not shown interest in women during the story." 

As points of reference: We have Brokeback Mountain.  There is strong evidence (even stronger as SWOL) that both Ennis and Jack could very well be bisexual.  You could argue that in their time they were married to women because they should, but even in the movie (I haven't read the book) they look very much attracted to their wives and Ennis to the girlfriend he had after his wife.  Counterarguments have included Ennis preference for anal sex in the book (plenty of heterosexuals and bisexuals like anal) and the book written by a woman.  Call me by Your Name has this same dilemma of men showing attraction to women in the movie (again, I haven't had the chance to get the book).  Their relations with women are more on screen and there has been an argument that they were gay and just experimenting, particularly Elio.  And that's valid.  But I also wonder if referring to these characters as bi, gay people feel they are being "corrupted" and "straightwashed" and "cheapened."  I know some say that it's not valid because Call Me By Your Name was written by a straight(-identified?) man anyway.

In conclusion: the interpretation of Silva and Jake as any sexuality other than straight is pretty much valid.  That being said, it is also true that there are not as much bi male representation as gay representation, and there is no need to incur in biphobic language when you want to make the (again valid) point of seeing Silva as gay.  Having heteronormative attractions doesn't make a bisexual/pansexual man any less queer (especially when they have queer attractions as well) and similar arguments can be done for a plethora of characters showing multiple gender attractions, whether on-screen or casually mentioning them.

Because Tim Drake has extensive media training but Red Robin is a chaotic bisexual disaster with no filter.

And that’s my headcannon of how Red Robin comes out in a way that’s so dumb, most people don’t even realise he’s done it.

(Bonus headcanon: Bernard was the creator of the original viral clip and was infuriated at the time because people thought it was a joke but it was SO OBVIOUS that Red Robin was coming out. Why couldn’t everyone see it?)

Claims that sound intuitively right but there is literally no evidence and you are left to wonder why anyone would just make this stuff up

Wild unfounded claims about media that make you lose your mind wondering if you both have read/watched the same source material

Korra got a ton---and I mean a TON---of hate, for daring to be a headstrong, non-genderconforming woman of color. So forgive me if I don't react well to "korrasami doesn't deserve it"

Korra already fought through enough misogyny and racism while it was actively airing. She already got enough criticism for not being the "target audience" of 8-12 age males who buy action figures. She already got enough criticism for having flaws as a woman, for not "acting ladylike". She already got enough criticism for not being white or white passing in a show that has ZERO white characters. So when you come at korrasami fans with "they don't deserve it"? Don't be surprised when korrasami fans look at it with a lens of suspicion, because korrasami already fought through the criticism, already fought through being stuck in the "dead slot" air time in nickelodeon (which they were moved to in season three, when the show runners actively started hinting at a wlw ship), already fought through being pulled off air and onto online viewing only, in 2014, for those of you who are a bit young. (Obergefell vs Hodges, the Supreme Court case which legalized gay marriage nationwide in the US, happen on June 26, 2016). "They only held hands in the finale" because that's all they could get away with at the time. They were the FIRST. Bubbeline came later. Rupphire came later. Catradora came later. There are still no notable mlm ships in children's media, so the work ISN'T done. Korrasami fans "screech and yell" at you for not understanding because you accuse them of "queerbaiting" without understanding that they were the FIRST in their time to OPENLY hint at being gay on a a children's television network. In a time, for most intents and purposes in the US, being gay was still ILLEGAL.

And by the way? The Owl House, a recent, animatec children's show on Disney, was recently canceled for not being "the Disney brand". It features a bisexual woman of color (in an EXPLICITLY wlw relationship) as the main character, not unsimilar to Korra. Misogyny is not dead. Homophobia is not dead. Know your history, and know the work isn't done.

So.. I'm confused about something. If your beliefs in radical feminism say that trans people aren't valid in their feelings of being trans, what's stopping you from making bisexual people not part of the LGB? B stands for bisexual. What if their sexuality is just a phase? What if they are *actually* just heterosexual? For that matter what's stopping you from excluding YOURSELF from the community? At some point, you can't exclude any more people from a space that wasn't supposed to be gatekept to begin with! -Vero of CFC

You people always use that word “valid”. It’s absolutely meaningless post modern nonsense. Trans people feel that despite having a male or female body, their feelings about it change reality. I’m not telling trans people how they feel. Because you’re right, I can’t know that. What I’m telling them is that their feelings don’t change their bio sex. I’m telling them their feelings don’t supersede the rights and dignity of women. That’s not at all the same thing as being same sex attracted.

If I tell you that I am attracted to both men and women you can believe me or not. It doesn’t change my sexuality. You can’t know how I personally experience sexual attraction. But if I tell you I’m an Olympic Figure Skater, that’s something external and material. That’s something that either is or isn’t. And it doesn’t matter how true I want it to be.

This isn’t about people being invalid or valid. It isn’t about telling others I know better than them how they feel. It’s me telling them that their feelings don’t change material reality.

And we don’t get to sidestep reality because language is limited and imprecise. We create words to express ideas and categorize things so we don’t have to start every conversation from the ground up. Think of the quote “a rose by any other name”. The word ‘rose’ is made up but the flower it refers to exists in the material world. And you and everyone on earth could declare a rose a tulip but as long as people needed to specify they’d find a way to invent the word rose again. It’s why every 3 years your movement declares old terms verboten. MtF and FtM got used until people got mad it didn’t erase the reality of bio sex and people just used those terms in place of “male and female”. Then the same thing happened with AFAB and AMAB. Now we’re onto TME and no one knows what anyone is talking about because at the end of the day, people are male or female and no amount of “validation” or the right words erases that reality.

I am bisexual because I am attracted to both men and women. Lesbians are women exclusively attracted to women. Gay men are men exclusively attracted to men. Straight people are exclusively attracted to the opposite sex. The LGB community formed because the thing we had in common- same sex attraction- is punished in most societies. It absolutely was designed to gatekeep. It was a civil rights movement- not a secret club house. The LGB have no more moral responsibility to admit opposite sex attracted people than black activists have to include white or Asian people.

“Queer” has nothing to do with it. Demi flux genderoo aroallo fox kin have nothing to do with it. A group of men that believe their internal state of mind makes them literally a woman has nothing to do with it. You people overran a movement for same sex attracted people, convinced everyone to call our community a slur, and demand that we center heterosexual teens too immature for a relationship thinking that makes them the same as a Gay man.

I’m tired of arguing with 19 year olds that read too much mlm fanfiction that having short hair and wearing hoodies from the boys section doesn’t mean they’re gay men. I’m tired of arguing with those same girls that the 45 year old man with pigtails and a pink pinafore sucking his thumb and holding a dolly on social media isn’t a brave woman defying The Man. He’s just a pervert.
