A/N: sooo I wrote like a third of this and then accidentally posted it and had to delate it I literally want to cry 🥲 ANYWAYS this is basically gender flipped Hiccup/Astrid from the first movie. I’m probably changing now dragons work in the lotr verse but idc.

Warnings: asshole Legolas (at the beginning), not proof read, possible spelling/grammar mistakes, a few direct quotes from the first httyd movie because I couldn’t help myself 💀

Synopsis: you’ve been acting strange Legolas takes matters of investigation into his own hands.

*this is going to have a part 2 of head canons bc I cannot fit everything I want into this one shot lmao*

You were… widely regarded as strange to the other elves. Daughter to the hand of the king you have a fairly high status within Greenwood, but not many friends.

Legolas had known you since you where both kids but he never payed much attention to you. You were shy and quite and liked to hide. Growing up you barely said two words to him and as you both got older he fell in with everyone who didn’t like you.

He saw you every once in a while, usually drawing or working in the blacksmiths, more recently in the library. You had joined the guard not to long ago, Legolas assumed your father had made you because you weren’t to good at it.

You fumbled your way through every day of training and more then once someone had to rescue you while out on patrol. Legolas wished he had the power to kick you off the guard, it would make everyone’s lives so much easier, but Tauriel refused.

However, in the last month you had been acting more strange then usual, and Legolas seemed to be the only one to notice. It irked him.

You had been sneaking off any chance you got, after patrols and trainings you would just disappear and more then once he saw you from his balcony sneaking off into the woods at night. You hardly spent any time in your usual places like the library or the blacksmiths or even sitting under your favorite tree in the garden.

Tauriel wouldn’t listen to him when he brought up your mysterious disappearances and he didn’t want to you to his father just yet, so he took matters into his own hands. For the next couple of days Legolas observed you more closely. He made excuses to go into the blacksmiths and try and get a glimpse at what you where working on, he followed you into the library and picked up what books you’d leave behind, and every night he waited on his balcony to watch where you would walk into the woods. Admittedly it was a little weird but he had to know what you where doing. Finally, he decided it was time to follow you into the woods.

He waited in the woods for you to show up after your patrol, sitting patiently on a rock, sharpening his blades to pass the time. He stopped when he heard the crunching of leaves and snapping of twigs not to far ahead of him. Quickly he jumped behind the rock to not be seen.

As he predicted, when he looked out from behind the rock he saw you walking through the woods dressed in something strange. It seemed to be made of leather?

After you where a good distance ahead of him he crept out from behind the rock and silently followed you from a distance, making sure to keep out of sight. You were mumbling to yourself as you flipped through a little leather bound book in your hands, chewing on the end of your pencil.

Maybe you were just a harmless weirdo, Legolas began to think. Maybe he was being to hard on you. He didn’t understand why what you where doing mattered to him so much, why he was so interested. If he was going to be honest with himself you didn’t seem like a threat. He sighed and as he was thinking about this, he stepped on a twig and it cracked under his weight.

You stopped up ahead and spun around. Quickly Legolas ducked behind a tree. You gave a questioning look around before slowly turning back and hastening your pace.

Legolas breathed again after you continued moving forward, he stayed there until you were almost out of sight before he followed again. He followed you for a long while, watching carefully were he stepped.

Eventually, you disappeared again. This time though you had climbed your way down into a large clearing. There was a couple trees with a large pond in the center of the grove but he couldn’t see much from up where he was. He climbed down through the rocks and into the grove but there was no sign of you. He took a moment to spin and look around, it was a beautiful place, he could see why you would want to sneak off here.

“Legolas.” He heard the shock in your voice as you dropped something to the ground, but when he turned around you had kicked it behind the bolder you were standing next to.

He turned around, his face stony. “Wha-what are you doing here?” You laughed nervously, looking around and shuffling on your feat.

“Actually, I came to ask you the same question.” He said coming closer, flipping his blade in his hand and looking down his nose at you.

“Oh! Well you know, ah, um,” you stuttered.

“And what is this you’re wearing?” Legolas asked accusatorially and tried to peer around the bolder you rushed up to him and put both your hands on his chest, trying to guide him away.

“I’ve been, uh, making… outfits!” You laughed. “That’s it! You caught me! Drag me back and—”

Legolas swiftly moved his blade so it pointed at your throat. Immediately you moved both your hands off him. “Don’t lie to me. What are you hiding?”

There was a low rumbling coming from behind him. Legolas looked over a shoulder and climbing out from behind a stack of boulders, teeth bared and reptilian eyes fixed on them, was a dragon.

“Get down!” Legolas shouted and shoved you both to the ground as the dragon pounced. Legolas got back up immediately, prepared to swing his sword at the beast.

“Stop! Stop!” You cried as you scrambled to your feet and placed yourself between Legolas and the large black dragon.

You where facing him with both your hands on the dragons face, holding it back from attacking again. It’s green eyes fixed on Legolas as it continued to growl.

“You scared her!” You said, looking more angry then Legolas had ever seen.

“I scared her?!” Legolas yelled back, using his sword to point at himself and then the dragon. He noticed now that the dragon was wearing a leather saddle.

There was a long stretch of silence where all you did was look at each other. It was like Legolas thoughts had completely stopped working. This wasn’t even on the list of things he had expected to find out here with you.

He turned on his heel and began to walk away.

“Wait! Wait-wait-wait-wait.” You said skidding over to him. You grabbed him by the arm to stop your feet from sliding out form under you, you where crouched down ever so slightly to catch his eye, all evidence of angry gone from your face and replaced by intense worry. “You can’t tell anyone, they’ll have her killed! I promise she’s not dangerous.”

Legolas furrowed his brows and looked over his shoulder. The black dragon was still glaring at him. It snorted at him rather aggressively.

“Just…” slowly your hand moved down his arm until it gently clasped his hand. “Just let me show you.” Your voice was barely above a whisper and something about it made Legolas’ heart speed up.

Gently, slowly, you led him back over to the dragon. It might have been the wrong time, but it dawned on him that he quite liked the feeling of your hand in his.

You lifted his hand to the dragons nose and it made a low growl. “Shrenka,” you said and the dragon turned it big eyes to you. Immediately he saw how her slit pupils turned round. “He’s a friend.”

Shrenka made a disgruntled, annoyed, noise but she allowed Legolas to place his hand on her. Legolas peeled his eyes from Shrenka to find that you where already looking at him, a slight smile placed on your lips.

“She’s a bit moody,” you said as you removed your hand from over top of his. “But that’s all.”

Slowly Legolas began to stroke Shrenka’s head and scratched under her chin and she made a sound akin to a cats purr. A smile began to form on his face, and in turn, one formed on yours.

Tbh I fall asleep anywhere and anytime easily but on the rare occasion I can’t I just put on some music and it seems to help

I’d probably change it to Amada. It’s one of my old relative’s name and she’s somebody I look up to and hope to be like, so I’d love to be named after her tbh. Family is def something that’s important to me so it fits

One that’s up there for me is deeefinitely that David audio where he catches you with his hoodie. I always go back to one of his audios if I need to relax and that’s fs one of them (side note, I remember after listening to that audio I knew immediately that he was gonna propose for the next one ommmg)

Any anime ever but esp Ouran. I can’t help but rewatch yk 😞

I hope I’m not too biased as a fellow type nine when I say this, but you’re a family-oriented type nine who’d get along with Damien. Who would be a better match for you than Huxley?

Type Nines are the peacemakers, the mediators of the Enneagram, always listening and taking care of people, watching the mood. This combined with family being important to you and Damien reminding you of your best friend leads me to believe that you’d have so much in common with Huxley as all these things describe him too, you know? This song would have come out when Huxley was a kid, and the nostalgia of it combined with having someone to listen to it with would just make him overjoyed.

i'm gonna talk about the oc in this post because i love her dearly.. one of the ocs i've had the longest & has been through so many changes lmao. originally an x-men oc but once i got out of that phase i still loved her & wanted to adapt her to a different media. she’s currently pretty multi-verse and i basically just insert her into like… every superhero related fanbase i get fixated on

her name is august riley. she’s had sooo many fcs over time but her current one is ruby campbell!! she might be the permanent one since i’ve been stuck on her for like a year and a half lmao

she’s a heroine with empathetic & telepathic abilities.

she was born into a family that had little to no experience with superpowered people, so they never realized she was one until later in her life. since her powers weren’t necessarily flashy, she didn’t realize it herself and figured the constant influx of other people’s emotions and thoughts was just kind of normal.

this snippet i posted a while ago was actually from her character study i did:

over time, when she expressed how she could really feel how others felt, really get into their heads, and nobody else had the same experience- she realized she might be different. a teacher at her elementary school was the only one to really take her aside and talk to her about it. she never had a good relationship with her parents, so she begged her not to tell them, but she did anyway.

since she grew up in a very small town, they all immediately saw her as something dangerous. august was taken in for various scientific valuations, many that left her scarred physically and emotionally afterwards. once they decided this literal child wasn’t a threat, she was sent back to continue her education.

(i feel like i should put… a trigger warning here, but idk what kind i would put?)

after that, she had to move towns and schools, traveling far away from her cultivated life & friends. her parents never really saw her the same, abandoning her emotionally. think matilda type parenting.

somewhere in her highschool years she experienced some sexual trauma but i’m not gonna fully get into that xoxo

since everyone thinks so differently- tried to get a hold on other people’s thoughts and emotions by drawing out everything she saw in a quest to decipher them. it sometimes worked, but more often than not it didn’t. her notebooks became filled with other people’s thoughts.

once she was old enough to move out, she left town, moving to a bigger city, hoping that she would be understood better and not regarded as a freak.

since she was still haunted by the memory of her bully, and her parents, she kept a solitary life, rarely connecting with friends and only keeping few by her side for fear they’d end up like he did. she kept making art, becoming a painter with a fairly big online following.

how i think she fits into the ef universe, she lives in an apartment underneath the force’s. after they move in, she keeps seeing the same dreams over and over, and never her own.

after some investigating she realized her dreams are other peoples. olivers dreams about her mother, skylar’s about her home planet, and chase and bree’s trauma nightmares.

when she starts seeing them around the building, she starts recognizing them from her dreams and becomes interested in why its them that keeps showing up.

stuff happens from there that i’m still working out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

here’s some fun factz about her!!

she doesn’t really have a sexuality label, she takes people just as they come.

she has ptsd + ocd, most of her rituals surrounding numbers and symmetry

despite the fact that she tries to stay solitary, she feels super deeply, and gets very emotionally attached pretty fast. she’s also a hopeless romantic from the books she grew up reading, but is always too scared to actually find romance herself.

is a pretty big insomniac, because she feels insanely guilty about accidentally spying on other people’s dreams constantly

undiagnosed autistic. tbh all of my ocs are on the spectrum LMAO

she also feels very guilty and is nervous about accidentally reading people’s minds without their consent, so she usually keeps headphones in with music playing to try and drown it out

she’s spent so much time with herself that she now has full control over her abilities, but that control tends to waver depending on her own emotions

can probably recite literally any book word for word. huge bookworm. absolute nerd.

girl i just wanna say that i’m so happy you’re writing a bones and all au like it’s literally my fav movie (i already know what happens in the book i just haven’t read it yet) and i remember right when you posted about you beginning to write it i was thinking of how badly i wanted someone to write it just a couple hours before 💀but ik that a lot of people feel uncomfortable with cannibalism in media, which yk is understandable, but it’s fiction and it’s metaphorical and romantic in this case😭like also this is just a quick little rant having to do with the novel and film itself but i saw a lot of people being like “ew that’s not love” or saying it’s romanticizing cannibalism and it just reminds me of how people are really not looking more deeply into things like this cause b&a is SOOO much more than just cannibalism. it shows poverty, loneliness, queerness, feminism and showing how rare it is to really relate and understand another completely BUT ANYWAY JFJJDJD just ty i’m obsessed oh also i just want to know if you prefer the film or the book more and why? like what are the differences you liked?

Yes, Bones and All has so many interesting viewpoints on the things you listed. It's not a perfect book or film, not by a long shot, but it is something a bit more unique than a lot of the YA offerings we've had recently. And, I'm always gonna be a sucker for horror romance.

Honestly, I still haven't decided if I prefer the film or book ending. As I write this fic I'm finding it a great tool to analyse the two texts more in-depth. I pick and chose what to take from them in terms of both what fits with Eddie's character best, but what I feel like makes a good story. How about when I finish the fic and the final chapters are published, you ask me again about which ending I like best? I'll probably have a set answer by then.

22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?

hm this is. this is a funny one to answer bc i feel like i am part incredibly organized and part chaotic mess lmfao. bc like i use google drive for my fics and i have a RIGID organizational structure for that. like i have a folder for each of the fandoms i've written for and within that fandom folder i have a writing folder and within that writing folder i have my docs. and those are organized by docs i've started and are either waiting to be written or are in the middle of being written which kind of hang out in the folder loosely. but then i have a separate folder for my finished fics, a separate folder for my finished fics' plan/outline docs (if they have one), and a separate folder for each event/challenge/project i've participated in. so like for steddie i have a folder for each of the zines i'm in and a big bang folder.

but then when it comes to what i'm actually writing... that can get messier lmao. i kind of write across like 3 different platforms? like i use google docs for my main document to write in, but i also write in the notes app on my phone, and i handwrite a lot of things too (mostly bc i cant use my computer at work to write fic so i resort to good ol fashioned pen and paper lol). so it can get tricky trying to remember WHERE i wrote that one piece i'm looking for lol and i have to dig and dig through sheets of notebook paper and my insane amount of notes on my phone and the docs that i have (bc sometimes if it's getting too long i'll split up the doc too just to get a clean work space).

i also have a binder that is full of like old fic stuff i've jotted down, whether that be old snippets i've written, or ideas i've scribbled onto a sticky note, or something i printed out to edit. that binder has stuff from sooo many different fandoms in it lol. i've tried organizing it by fandom and i've bunched all the stuff for one specific idea into a paperclipped stack or i've put it in one of those sheet protector pages lol.

but yeah it's like organized chaos i guess you could say. but it works for the most part so! here i am! lol

29. Where do you draw your inspiration? What do you do when the inspiration well runs dry?

ooh! easy question!! i draw inspiration from literally anything and everything!! the world is full of stuff that makes GREAT stories!! so yeah i absolutely pull from everything around me - whether that's looking up prompts on tumblr, watching a show/movie or reading a book and wanting to au it, something a friend/coworker/someone random on the street said, an object i see that sparks something in me, a color, a weather pattern, a mood, a song, a recipe, my own feelings, other people's feelings, my life experiences, other people's life experiences.

inspiration really truly comes from everwhere!

when the well runs dry i try to dig deeper. i try to look through prompts that might spark something, even if it's a tiny little ficlet. oh i also like to look through old ideas i've had for other fandoms when this happens bc sometimes the best thing to do is to recycle!! bc like the inspiration was there at some point, and looking back on it helps to respark that and bring it back! and trying to revamp it to fit my current fandom/pairing really helps get the gears turning again too.

9. What's a job you've never imagined having/wanted to have, even since you were a kid?

a cop lmao i went through sooo many phases as a kid wanting to be everything under the fucking sun, from a chef to a ballerina to a lawyer to a photographer, but i NEVER not once wanted to be or pictured myself as a cop. thats honestly like the only job i can think of that i didnt say i wanted to be for at least for a week as a kid

13. Did you have a favorite outfit/shirt/jacket/pair of shoes/etc. as a child? If so, what?

i got these like. teal fucking jeggings in either fourth or fifth grade that i wore basically everyday for YEARS. i say wore, but they actually still fit me fairly decently and i do wear them now from time to time, and theyve only recently started showing signs of wear 💀 (idk if that says something abt my height but i SWEAR ive grown since fourth grade!!! my theory is that i worse them sm and theyre of such a stretchy material that they sort of grew with me? idk its the only thing i can think of that makes sence bc NONE of my other clothes from back then fir me anymore lmao)

uhhh probably that my favorite animals are hippos? or that my favorite book is frankenstien. idk i get really in my head abt saying the wrong things to ppl so the only shit i'd be comfortable telling *anyone* is really basic shit like that

Which may not seem that impressive considering it's only my second one ever, but it was an almost trancendant experience, and my parents (who have had many more) agree, so there's that 👌 (and now we're almost back in Sweden already 😭 it's been a good holiday tough, but not as much traveling around as we would've liked cause apparently all of Europe discovered camping during the pandemic so EVERY campsite was already fully booked in June lmao).

Fact 2: I'm starting a new university program in a few weeks, which will hopefully (probably) work out better than the one I dropped out of 2 years ago (unless there's another pandemic lol). I'm nervous but excited!!

Fact 3: uh... Idk what else to put... I'm kind of a fan of German pop ig? 🇩🇪 We often listen to German or Austrian radio even when not abroad cause its got a good mix of music that's not just from like the last 3 years, so there're quite a few songs from there that are really nostalgic for me. I compiled a playlist with my faves here if anyone's interested! (which I'm listening to rn btw 😊)

Some of my fave artists they air are Rea Garvey (technically originally Irish lol but his music just makes me euphoric with nostalgia, it's SO hopeful and happy 🥰), Mark Forster, and Sunrise Avenue (who aren't unheard of in Sweden either, but they're so popular in Germany and Austria I thought they must be from there, but apparently they're Finnish lmao 🇫🇮). Fave songs are Armour (Rea Garvey), Chöre, Wir sind groß and Sowieso (Mark Forster), 80 millionen (Max Gieisinger), I Help You Hate Me (Sunrise Avenue; so funny), and Lass uns gehen (Revolverheld; the ULTIMATE summer road trip song!!).

Also imagine the elation in my ESC-heart when I discovered Max Gieisinger had made a cover of Calm After the Storm for the German edition of Så mycket bättre (Sing meinen Song; both shows based on an originally dutch format I believe). It's also so much fun to hear which ESC songs get popular down there; they've played Standing Still for sooo long, also Michael Schulte's You Let Me Walk Alone and Lena are of course still popular, as is The Common Linnets' Jolene cover, and they seem to have really liked our If I Were Sorry, which we heard still played in Austria this year (directly following Halo lmao 😎). The real brain-fuck for me though is that Nano's Hold On, which didn't win Melodifestivalen, got popular in Germany??? Like, I see how it perfectly fits the general vibe of German radio, but just, how??

God I could go on for hours about this lol, I have to stop. Music rules!!!

Hi! Long text incoming, sorry, but I just caught up with your latest not-at-all-an-actual-project 4433 AU idea, so for the h2o AU, regarding your poll: I definitely had to go for manipulating/moving water with Lewis but I'm thinking along the lines of the enhanced version from later on in the series, because, if I remember correctly, Cleo was also able to summon and control wind. So a mixture between moving water and the different option, really, because that would be cool, wouldn't it?

Personally, because that's come up, I've been obsessed with fantasy since I was a kid and never managed to grow out of that, which is why every single fiction!book in my room has at least some fantastical aspect to it - and why I love all kinds of AUs with supernatural elements. I also grew up with h2o so this is right up my alley, as you may notice. :D But I also think that these fantastical, crazy things can be really fun and revealing to play around with when enhancing actual character traits: Lewis is a deeply emotional person, maybe more so than a lot of the guys around him, yet in his "main environment" he's been made to feel like he has to conceal that more so than anyone else. So how would that translate into this supernatural setting, for someone who is very attuned to his emotions, has learned to not show them in a way others are carefree to do, this time because of his powers, yet also experiences them so strongly? It's just fun to investigate that struggle through this heightened lense.

I mean, basically I can't decide if I'd prefer him to have an iron grip on his powers that are linked to his emotions (he'd certainly try) or if I'd prefer him to, at least sometimes, slip, especially with Max around to witness. Just something to think about, I suppose? :D

i think moving is the best for him indeed! especially with your explanation! he is not hotheaded the way rikki is to make boiling fit, he's not cool and collected and sometimes too rational to be emotional the way emma is to make freezing fit. so yeah, the sorta-telekenises works really nicely!

and the wind-thing, they really only did that for a few episodes in season 2, it was sooo random. but maybe it can tie into the full moon thing and be a side effect of the full moon? and yes, i certainly don't want him to have full control or whatever, i'd love it if he slips up! especially around max! suddenly a random bottle they weren't even close to falls from the table, or a tap explodes because lewis and max kissed and his heartbeat is through the roof.... so many good options.

i love that lewis is indeed very much robot-ified in the sense that he can't always be open about his emotions, or can't even show them, so he lowkey trained himself to hide his feelings but he's not like that, so it can explode at random times, especially later in the story where max is bothered by lewis' insincerity due to him having to hide a part of himself, and then later when max knows, that they can work through it better. max teaching lewis to be more open about his feelings and not constantly adapt to others, lewis teaching max to be kinder and give people a shot.

and yes ofc i’ve seen dickinson! i had like a whole dickinson era, i literally bought “open me carefully” but i haven’t even finished reading it because i’m having so much feels every time i’m opening this book but like. More film/show quick reviews

I Am Not Okay With This (2020) - ok this is a series but shhhh! I LOVED this. The main girl is SOOO likeable and funny to me. Sad it was cancelled, now I want to read the comic to find out what happens next…

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - I did watch this once as a kid, but shh. Very quippy and quotable, I kept thinking of various KH crack videos with dubs from this LOL.

Polar (2019) - More camp than I expected LOL. The vibes between Montana and the rest of the film feel like two different movies. In terms of women roles, it feels uh.. pre-Gamer Gate… CW: long sex scene, fatphobia, torture, and the dog dies…

The Spider Man Trilogy (2002, 2004, 2007) - Okay I actually genuinely love how camp these movies are. Love the camera movement. Still really surprised how good the 2004 film is!

The Irishman (2019) - god this movie was so long and for what! LOL. Fantastic performances though. And I got used to the de-aging VFX, even if they caught me off guard at first. Still, perhaps I wasn't the audience this movie was for because I really felt it was so long...

Venom + Venom Carnage (2018, 2021) - Wow I really just… really do not fucking care for car chase scenes LOL. These movies were alright, but honestly I probably will never watch them again haha. Venom and Eddie were funny! I saw glimpses of the sexuality that all the fans were bonkers about (though it was weaker than I expected based on said fans reactions lmao).

Titan AE (2000) - Very very y2k movie LOL. The rock music is sooo funny and does not fit the sci fi at ALL imo lmao. I do prefer Treasure Planet for Jim and Silver’s relationship, so I wish the emotional relationships were stronger in this movie. But still a fun movie. Stith4Ever. Why was Akima’s skull so fucking long.

The Hunger Games films (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)- I know that these movies ironically fulfill the very notion I've heard the books were against (making a entertaining spectacle of dark topics, among other things), I do really like them 🙈 My favorite will always be Mocking Jay pt 1 just because I love that underground-jumpsuit aesthetic LOL. Lock me away, boys 🚓🚨

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) - Okay other than Illumination’s loathsome “Our movies cannot slow down at all even once” problem, this movie was great. They made Mario and Luigi. So. fucking. adorable. And Bowser was great ofc.

American Psycho (2000) - I DO think this is a good film, but I also can’t BELIEVE this satirical doofus is the guy so many men project themselves onto LOL. I wasn’t expecting a theme on conformity, but to me its what makes the movie interesting.

The King's Man (2021) - This delivered what I expected: fun characters, action scenes that are unique and actually interesting, epic music that makes you feel like you’re with old friends. And it delivered what I did not expect: The WEIRDEST erotic scene I have EVER seen LMAO.

Agent Cody Banks (2003) - Saw this so young I don’t really remember it. This movie has a much higher budget than I remember LOL. Not really innovative but it was for kids, and I remember loving it.

Nope (2022) - okay okay I will admit at first I was like “okay how does the monkey connect” but my dumbass didn't realize Jupe had been purposely giving horses to the UFO, so realizing that Jupe tried taming the UFO in the way he thought he tamed the monkey really made me love this film even more. No wonder Jordan Peele's considered the next Steven Spielberg!

Rope (1948) - NGL I was hoping Rupert would go along :/ This would be so fun on see on stage, I enjoyed it!

Psycho (1960) - I enjoyed this too! One scene that will stick with me is the camera shift in Norman and Marion’s conversation when mothers are brought up. Very interesting cinematography there.

Hoodwinked (2005) - l watched this friends lmao; I was very hesitant, but I gotta admit it was funnier than I expected. The various POVs really makes it a unique animated comedy.

Fight Club (1999) - God first 12 minutes of this film I thought I was going fucking crazy! But hey you know I get it now. This is a fun movie. It feels like the opposite reaction to consumerism and conformity than American Psycho’s, an interesting pair of movies.

Three Pines (2022) - Once again, a show not a film, but I really enjoyed this series. Loved the setting, the atmosphere, the characters, the mysteries. Even though its a detective show with murder, I still found it oddly cozy enough to be a comfort show for the future LOL. Maybe it's because Armand is just that likeable!

So Shadow and Bone season 2....oh where to start. There was a lot to love of course, I loved seeing all my favs back, and the additions to the cast were nice. Of the new people, I particularly liked Tolya, Tamar, and even Nikolai at times. Overall I thought the writers did a good job of mixing Siege and Storm, and Ruin and Rising, and it flowed much better when they were combined. Now that’s about all the praise I have for the writers if I’m being honest lmao.

For me it’s just so hard to look past some of the negatives so I’ll start there. My two biggest gripes are

1. How much they pulled from Crooked Kingdom

2. How rushed Wesper was

Ohhhh the writers had it out for me fr. Crooked kingdom is perhaps one, if not my favorite, book of all time, and I will never forgive the writers for how much they massacred my precious child. They pulled sooo much of it for a single episode and plot point they had for Pekka, and it made me so angry. There was no build up or anything, and it was at times like that that made me wish they had kept the crows out of the show entirely, because then they couldn’t have messed up their plot this bad. Anyway once I finally got past that disaster I was met with something equally as heartbreaking. Wesper. Oh dear lord. Since Jesper is my favorite character (and more on him later cause wew), obviously Wesper is my favorite ship. I loved how it was a slow burn, and that all just got thrown away here. Don’t get me wrong I loved seeing them happy and together, of course I did they’re my favs, but it just felt off. It was too quick, and we really didn’t get any of that longing or wondering that was so key to their relationship before. They were quite literally just reduced to a hookup and some throw away lines and that just made me so mad. To be honest I think pacing was a problem for the whole season overall, they were trying to fit too many stories and too many characters and it just made everything feel far too fast paced.

Anyway that being said, on to some more positive notes. Most of the very clear changes from the (S&B) books were really good. I liked that Siege and Storm was acknowledged for it’s important parts but otherwise skipped since it wasn’t that vital. I loved how Alina kept her powers in the end and will now help rule Ravka, and that Mal is off being the new Sturmhond. I loved the twins and they felt straight from the books, Nikolai was a little off but by the end I was chill with him. Most of the characters were pretty good, but I’ll dive into all of them in a second. My biggest compliment is how Kaz felt more Kaz this season, and he was finally his ruthless self. Most of the completely brand new story lines I was just ok with, but the hunt in Shu Han for the blade that ended up belonging and being made by the saint was so cool, I loved that addition and that the weapon actually worked. I also kinda loved that they immediately thought of the crows when they needed something stolen lmao, but I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that supposedly Nikolai hired all of them in the first place smh.

So for my last little section here I thought I would just discuss the characters and what I liked and didn’t like about them this season, that and where the writers went wrong with them.

Shadow and Bone Characters:

Alina: I really enjoyed Alina this season, as I said before I loved that she kept her powers and that now she will be helping rule Ravka. It feels very on brand for her and I like the change. I thought there were some points where she suffered from mc dumbness syndrome, but it was very far and few in between so I’ll let that go. Overall she was good and I don’t have much else to say.

Darling: Glad he’s gone lmao. My only real complaint is I felt like they really made him a s 2d villain this season, whereas last season he felt more complex. I guess it’s cause he got less screen time and you know what I’m ok with that.

Mal: I was the biggest mal defender last season since he was so much better than the book, but oh boy I had my work cut out for me with that ending lmao. I thought he was good, and added a lot more emotional depth to his character which is good. The ending was cruel but fitting, and since they clearly want to continue with the Shadow and Bone storyline I wonder where it will take him.

Nikolai: Ngl I was a big show!Nikolai hater all the way up until the season aired. From the few clips we got of him they just didn’t feel very Nikolai yk. Anyway needless to say he grew on me, not all the way, but enough. I thought he played a much better prince rather than privateer, but I loved how many quotes he had from the books.

Tolya: I didn’t expect this, but he was actually one of my favs of the season. In the book I didn’t care for him all that much but in the show he was so much more interesting. I loved how they kept in his poetry, I liked how playful they made him. Anytime he was on screen I was having a really good time. He didn’t have too much emotional depth, but that didn’t bother me. Unexpected but welcome fav.

Tamar: Yeah I really loved the twins this season. She was just as snarky as I wanted, and just like Tolya, I really loved it whenever she was on screen, even if it wasn’t much. She was just fun, and my only complaint is I wish we saw more of her, and more of her relationship with Nadia ugh we were robbed.

Genya: I really enjoyed her, and I liked how they didn’t shy away from her storyline as a whole. I thought her relationship with David was very cute, but lord just let my girl be happy. Overall she was really good and I don’t have any complaints.

David: Let’s all pretend the ending didn’t happen cause I’m still mad wtf. Anyway I loved him a lot this season, I love how awkward and blunt he is, and since he was one of my favorite characters in the book of course I loved seeing him on screen. His relationship with Genya was so sweet and they actually mean everything to me.

Zoya: I found myself liking her a lot more in the shows than I did in the original trilogy. She was sassy, and snarky, and someone I would roll my eyes too, but for once it was in a good way. She didn’t get that much screen time, but I liked when she was there and I was chill with her.

Six of Crows characters: (oh boy): Just as a foreword, I felt like the crows suffered this season because half of them felt like they were just there to be a part of a ship (Inej, Wylan, and Matthias), while the other half got to be their own person (Kaz and Jesper) and Nina was somewhere in between.

Kaz: Starting off on a good note oh my god Kaz was so Kaz this season, Freddy is iconic. Last season he kept getting beat up for no reason, and this season he was doing the beating oml (Freddy is an icon). I loved how they dove into his flashbacks and they took the time to flesh out his trauma and how that affected his relationship with the rest of the crows. To me, he had the best characterization of any of the crows, and I loved getting to see him finally be dirtyhands. He was ruthless, and exciting to watch, I’m glad they at least got one of the crows right.

Inej: I will never forgive the crimes these writers committed against Inej dear god. My biggest complaint is how they didn’t talk or even acknowledge her past and her trauma. She deserved much better, and by doing this, it makes her seem like a villain with kanej. Suddenly it’s not two very hurt and wounded people meeting in the middle, it’s just poor Kaz and uncaring Inej, and I hate that. It’s not that her past it too “graphic” for the show cause they should it with Genya, and it just makes me sad. It felt like she was just an accessory to Kaz, instead of her own person who deserved her own arc.

Jesper: Oh where to start, well first off you already heard my gripes about Wesper, so I just wanted to talk about Jesper because they messed him up to lmao. One of Jesper’s biggest hurdles in the duology is learning to accept his powers, and even by the end of Crooked Kingdom he still isn’t at the point quite yet, and that’s ok. It was such a beautiful aspect of his story, and it makes it all the more upsetting that they basically gave him a single episode arc and suddenly he was over it and proud to be a grisha in the show. He deserved more than that, and also how is he so good with his powers in the show? He’s not trained at all smh. Anyway, another thing I was upset about was how his addiction and adhd were completely brushed under the rug this season. It’s like he was only allowed to have one problem. Now all that being said I loved the flashback with his mother omg, and Kit is truly the perfect Jesper, even with a dicey script and story he was perfect.

Wylan: I feel like they did a pretty decent job with Wylan, the whole problem was that he wasn’t given enough solo time to really flesh out all the good stuff. He suffered more from all the Wesper screen time. The few time they dabbled into his past were great, and I loved every detail, even if it wasn’t much. Jack was so good with the tender moments, and I agree with everyone when they said he’s the real life Wylan. Without his ship I just really don’t have much to say about him, and I feel like that’s kinda sad. He deserves to be his own character, and while I know he’s past isn’t super relevant yet, he should’ve had more growth and time on his own.

Nina: Nina was kinda similar to Wylan in the sense that we didn’t get much, but the few things we did get were great and I wish I got to see her develop more. Frankly I feel like she got the least about of screen time besides Matthias, who hardly counts, and I can’t help but feel it’s cause she couldn’t be in a relationship. These writers really make it feel like characters are nothing more than their relationships, and that makes me sad.

Matthias: This mf had a cameo ever episode in which all he did was have a wet dream about Nina, and tbh that’s so real. Can’t mess up a character if they don’t touch them I suppose. Yeah I really don’t have much to say, I’m just excited about his dynamic with the crows cause that always made me laugh.

So yeah overall, a lot of complaints, but I just want to add that I don’t hate this show. I hate how everyone is saying if you were disappointed in the season that means you’re praying on it’s downfall, which I’m not. I think enjoying something and still having critical opinions can and should co-exist. While it’s not exactly what I wanted or needed, and while I think it fundamentally messed up so many things from the book, I did enjoy it once I finally separated it from the source material. Of course I want to see the ice court heist, but I hope the writers will learn from the backlash that the source material is important and should be prioritized more.

writing characters with one eye

i can pretty much guarantee that ↑that↑ is not a heading you see everyday.

now i will not be giving advice on writing cyclopses, (though it may be sort of the same thing) i still hope this will be helpful for some people out there that are looking to provide a more diverse cast to their wip!

i have never ever ever read a book, watch a show movie etc etc that involves a character with one eye. (aside from those badass characters who wear eye patches bc they lost sight in one eye in some badass way)

for context: i am one of many people who was born with microphtalmia, an eye disease that results in one or both eyes develope smaller than normal at birth. i myself was born with a smaller left eye, which resulted in my left eye being removed exactly twenty days after birth.

microphthalmia (along with many other eye diseases) typically leads to being half or fully blind. i lucked out and only lost my left eye which i am so so thankful for.

i would really really love to see more representation for my community in literature, especially so people would come to see that being half blind isn’t as unusual and weird as people make it out to be.

without further ado, i present to you, a list of information, facts, and first hand experiences from yours truly!

i’ve had prosthetic eyes made to fit my eye socket for about fifteen years (i’m 16 lol) (the first 6ish months after the surgery i never had a prosthetic)

in my life i’ve had four different prosthetic eyes made because just like other people, my eye socket grew alongside the rest of me, meaning the prosthetic needed to be made bigger

i’ve had my current prosthetic for four years now, the past ones lasted about 2-3 years at a time. this one will probably last me through the rest of my life unless i need/want a new one

as opposed to most media/assumptions, my prosthetic (along with most prosthetics) is PLASTIC (people always think it’s glass) and only half a circle!!

i’ve had three surgeries related to my eye

i do not have depth perception which makes doing certain things very difficult (estimating distance, how close/far i am from something etc)

driving is not affected too much, i just have to turn my head more than other people. i believe being blind in the right eye might be more difficult, but i couldn’t say

doing my make up is kinda easy, except for eyeliner is a pain in the ASS since most people close their eye to do it on their upper lid, but clearly i can’t close my right eye whilst doing it lol

my family as well as my friends and even myself often forget i have a prosthetic, which sometimes results in awkward/funny situations

i hate walking with people on my right bc i can’t tell where they are unless i’m constantly looking down at my/their feet

i sucked at basketball bc i had such a disadvantage (no depth perception, i could only see half the court, i was constantly turning my head) but professional swimming is much easier for me since it’s not a contact sport and doesn’t really require for me to be paying attention to a million things at once

i rarely have to take my prosthetic out, and if i do, it’s either to clean it, (we do get eye crusties on our prosthetics just like other people do when they have pink eye or sever allergies) it’s bothering me/really dry, or i want to take it out to show/scare people lol

a lot of people don’t realize when i first meet them that it’s fake bc my recent prosthetic is amazing accurate to my real eye. others notice and assume i have a lazy eye since it doesn’t move

for some reason people think i can’t cry out of my left (prosthetic) eye??? i still have a tear duct??? i actually think more tears come out of my left tear duct than my right lol

i am extremely self conscious about it, but i know there are other one-eyed beauties out there who aren’t which is amazing!! i try to live vicariously through them lol

i make sooo many jokes about my eye lol, and i’m usually ok w other people making jokes as long as they aren’t like overly rude/offensive, then i’ll feel a lil bad about my self

people never really made fun of it, but kids in middle school likes to wave things in front of my left eye/on my left side that i couldn’t see which got really annoying after a while

getting custom designed prosthetics are available, but they’re really expensive (so are normal lol) they costs thousands of dollars, just like other prosthetics do

i run into things that are on my left side ALL THE TIME it’s actually kinda funny lolol

i try to hide my left eye/turn more to my left side in photos bc my eyes aren’t always looking in the same direction, which really gets to me

i wear glasses for both protection and bc my right eye is -1.75 lmao but i did used to wear non-prescription glasses purely for safety

i do have contacts to wear during the summer, swim meets etc, for when i don’t want/can’t wear my glasses but need to see. bc of this, i have a second pair of glasses that have no prescription

if doctors/scientists managed to figure out a way to fix microphthalmia (a birth defect), or do a sort of eye transplant, i would not be able to have that done to me because all parts of my left eye have been removed from my body

microphthalmia is NOT the only disease that results in the haver losing sight in one or both eyes!! there are many others, but it is not my place to share any experiences for something i have not experienced!!!

for once i just want to see a clumsy character who has one eye that WASNT a result of some tragic event.

so please please please consider including a character with one working eye in your wip. it would mean the world to myself and all the other members of the community (there’s a lot of us, trust me) plus, i wouldn’t mind starting an acting debut playing a half-blind female protagonist, that would be so dope.

[END 2020] My Top 9 Danmei Novel Picks of the Year

As a part of my Round Up post for the year, here’s my pick of favourite danmei novels, that I’ve read! This is sort of an accompaniment to my previous danmei rec list over HERE, so there may be one or two overlaps, but I’ve read WAY MORE after that and am prepared to like give more options here

Note: There should be English translations for all via novel updates if you do a search of the English name, but I don’t think most of them are completed.

I’m leaving out the usual MXTX and Priest ones, because they’re already good and we all know that and there’re many carrds and posts dedicated to them.

I am also a sucker for fainting but smart men, and not too overly angsty/complicated storylines, just putting it out there first, which is why I haven’t read a lot of some of the ones on my queue list.

1. 一剑霜寒 | A Sword of Frost by 语笑阑珊

Summary: Jing Yan Ran is the Emperor’s brother and wields military power in the novel, and it starts with an object being stolen from the palace. Jing Yan Ran has to retrieve the item secretly, and so enlists the help of Feng Yu Sect’s Sect Master, Yun Yi Feng, who heads the martial arts world’s one and only information trading post. Yun Yi Feng does not deal in business that involves any royalty, but Jing Yan Ran offers him something he cannot refuse - the Blood Red Lingzhi, a rare and mystical herb that is rumoured to be able to treat his life-threatening condition.

Yun Yi Feng was used by his shifu when he was younger to test out all kinds of poisons and cures, and since then, his body flushes dangerously hot and cold frequently, with bouts of severe coughing fits in between. Throughout the first mission where he spends time with Jing Yan Ran searching for the stolen object, he allows Jing Yan Ran to take care of him, and they fall in LURVE pretty much like 10 chapters in.

Of course, they have to uncover a plot and conspiracy against their enemies who are plotting to dethrone the Emperor, and also reveal the secrets of Yun Yi Feng’s birth.

My Thoughts: AN ABSOLUTE FAVE AND GEM, I’d say this is my favourite danmei novel ever. This is both hilarious and tears-inducing, to be honest, because for most of the novel YYF knows he doesn’t have long to live and so in the beginning he knows of his own feelings for JYR and JYR also shows him that he loves him, but he is unable to officially reciprocate because he knows his body is like weakening day by day. Halfway through the fear that he’s literally about to die as they are JUST about to find the cure is real, and damn I cried so much at that. Some highlights:

YYF falls asleep very easily in baths and everywhere actually, and pretty much within the first 10 chapters he gets used to JYR carrying him around (even naked from the bath, he’s like oh well, okay cool) and taking care of him, and JYR ALWAYS makes sure he is warm and toasty under his cape

YYF LOVESSSS RICHES, PLAYING THE ZITHER AND COOKING - He’s good at gathering the first one, but he FUCKING SUCKS AS THE LAST TWO - It’s so funny because he’s so beautiful and handsome right, and when he sits down at the zither everyone is like OH DAMN WHAT A DREAM- and then he plays, and everyone’s fantasies is shattered, he’s ABYSMAL at it, and the same goes for cooking

JYR doesn’t actually have the Blood Red Lingzhi, and throughout the first arc, he feels SO DAMN GUILTY because YYF even carved out a pendant that looks like what he thinks the herb looks like, and like carries it with him everywhere LMAO

2. 高能二维码 | High Energy QR Code by 青色羽翼

Summary: CEO Xing Ye’s brother Xing Shuo has just passed away at the age of 24, and nothing will make him believe that Xing Shuo died of natural causes despite autopsies and experts telling him that he really died simply of a heart failure. Xing Ye, who has impeccable memory, suddenly recalls the last time he saw Xing Shuo. His brother called out to him just before Xing Ye left for a business trip, and looked as if he had something to say, but ended up just wishing him a safe trip.

At that moment, there was a QR code on Xing Shuo’s phone, and the phone screen was strangely turned out towards Xing Ye, and Xing Ye, with his incredibly high IQ and memory, realizes that Xing Shuo wanted him to see the QR code. Quickly, he reproduces the QR code by pen and then scans it, and finds himself in a game world.

There he meets a narcissistic but also cute mirror which can speak, and finds out later that his name is Lu Ming Ze. Xing Ye’s mission is to clear the game missions in each round that is set by the black and white cubic game system, a system that continuously tempts its players into giving in to committing sins such as killing someone else, stealing and other things. He soon realizes that if he cannot stay on a path clear of these sins, he will never be able to triumph over the game system and return Lu Ming Ze back to his body in the real world.

At the same time, he gains new teammates and friends for life, and also finds out what role his brother played in this game.

My Thoughts: MY GOD I LOVE THIS. I LITERALLY JUST FINISHED READING THIS YESTERDAY, and honestly it’s one of my faves. I don’t like game systems very often (I’ve read three others so far, and this, and KOD are the only ones I’ve liked) but this one is *chef’s kiss*. So LMZ was born like with a really handsome face, like SUPER HANDSOME, and that’s why he’s like a harmless narcissist that cannot bear to look at ugly things LMAO, but he’s not spoilt, he makes sure that Xing Ye stays true to himself, and help him keep his head clear.

THE ONLY THING ABOUT THIS FRICKIN NOVEL IS THAT LU MING ZE STAYS A MIRROR, LIKE DIFFERENT KINDS OF MIRRORS, in the first TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY CHAPTERS. I KID YOU NOT. I FRICKIN KID YOU NOT. I swear I was sooo touched starved at the end of the novel, because they couldn’t even kiss?!! Like Xing Ye kisses the mirror, and then uses his thumbs to like hi-five mini LMZ in the mirror back, they can’t even hug. Do you know how empty my arms felt when I read this book?!! And my arms have never been filled!!!!!!

I really like this one because each game world is set up in such a brilliant way, but it’s not so unnecessarily complex that you literally don’t know what the fuck is going on. Xing Ye’s intelligence as he outmanoeuvres every single one of his enemies and convinces his would-be loyal teammates to trust him is so satisfying, world after world, victory after victory.

Humour is also absolutely ON POINT. A lot of it is centred on Xing Ye getting caught in the real world kissing his handheld mirror (LMZ) by LMZ’s parents (who cannot see him in the mirror) and LMZ’s parents going like ???!!!!!!!!

3. 妻为上 | The Wife is First by 绿野千鹤

Summary: This is set in a historical setting where men can marry other men, but it’s usually reserved for sons who were not borne by the official main first wife of the patriarch of the family, i.e. a son born by a concubine in a family may be forced to marry a man to keep him from being able to become the next family’s patriarch for example. This is because any family’s next leader needs to be able to have children with a wife who married in as a zheng shi (lawful wife), and not a ce shi (second wife) or any other concubines/mistresses etc. Most of these men who marry other men have to take them as their zheng shi and lawful spouse in a sense, and the same goes for the royal family.

The story starts with third prince Jing Shao, who was forced to marry Mu Han Zhang, a Marquis’ second son, by the Empress and Emperor, thereby officially and effectively cutting him out of the race for the throne. He’s mocked by the public as everyone knows what this means, and for the next 10 years, he neglects Mu Han Zhang, blaming him for his predicament, and deliberately showers his three other concubines with affection in front of him, but 10 years later, when Jing Shao is accused of treason, everyone leaves him except for Mu Han Zhang. They are chased to the edge of the cliff by soldiers, and Mu Han Zhang dies in his arms having taken an arrow meant for him earlier, and Jing Shao jumps off the cliff with his dead body, and promises that if there’s a next life, he will do everything Han Zhang says, and love him.

He wakes up immediately on the night of his marriage with Han Zhang, and realizes that he’s been given a second chance to make everything right. Han Zhang is definitely afraid of him, humiliated and angry when he first wakes up after how rough Jing Shao was with him earlier on their wedding night, and he has no memories of their past life. Jing Shao then sets to SHOWER HAN ZHANG with affection, love and basically everything, because he realized that this is the only person who stayed by his side until the end, and then he falls in love with Han Zhang properly this time, and also deals with every single person who maligned and schemed against him in his previous life, with Han Zhang by his side.

My Thoughts: OKAY BEFORE YALL GO INTO THE ‘WIFE’ terminology discourse and everything, in this case they do use the term ‘wife’ literally, and it’s a position, that while men frequently fall into (there are a lot of male ‘wives’ in this story), is also used to cut off like sons from inheriting the family and the fortune, and even titles. Male ‘wives’ aren’t looked down upon in this setting, in fact, Han Zhang gets a lot of leeway as one, and in his case he was also able to rise up the ranks to be an actual official later on, but the sad thing comes from sons who are most of the time forced to marry a male ‘wife’ for whatever reason, and then they are neglected as the son goes and find concubines, women he actually wants to sleep with - this is sad af yall. I don’t know, on one hand, yay for equality in marriage in this setting, but on the other hand like, damn, must you use same-sex marriage like that argh.

ANYWAY THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVES TOO?!!! I mean, especially when Jing Shao literally just goes into doting mode 200% and Han Zhang is totally like wtf why is he so nice to me is he scheming or something? And then he realizes that Jing Shao is really, really gentle towards him despite his reputation as a cruel, dark military commander, and Jing Shao always smiles at him. In any situation, especially in the beginning, when Han Zhang thought Jing Shao would not stand with him, Jing Shao literally just protects him no matter what, gives him everything, and cries, I love it.

Especially because Han Zhang is the son of a concubine and he was bullied a lot in the Mu family, and the official Lady Mu married him off to Jing Shao in hopes that he would be unhappy for the rest of his life, and I suppose that came true in the first life, but in the second, Han Zhang gets all the love, respect and support he never got before in this family with Jing Shao and that makes me WEEP.

4. 死亡万花筒 Kaleidoscope of Death by 西子绪

OOOH I intro-ed KOD here in my previous rec list. Still one of my faves and all-time re-reads, especially under the covers in the dark hehehe.

5. 你的距离 | Your Distance by 公子优

Summary: Ting Shuang is a student at a German university, and has this handsome professor Bai Chang Yi who he swears kind of hates him. He’s just broken up with his longtime boyfriend, and then goes on this dating app that matches a profile with him based on distance. The app can also show the matched profile’s distance from him once they enter the same area, and Ting Shuang starts chatting with this Chinese guy on the app, who he finds out later, is 36 years old, 187cm in height and wears glasses.

The guy is a little aloof and cool, very mature in his replies on the app, and somehow Bai Chang Yi finds out who he is later, as Ting Shuang starts complaining to him about his professor to Bai Chang Yi. Instead of getting angry and offended, BCY is pretty much amused and finds Ting Shuang cute. A few days later Ting Shuang finally realizes who it is he’s been texting, and after getting past the initial embarrassment and fear, they start dating for real, and they really fall in love!!!!!

My Thoughts: This is sweet and also hilarious af, if you need to like satisfy your sweet tooth, this is definitely one for you. It’s really funny because Bai Chang Yi runs in the same circles as Ting Shuang’s dad, who he’s estranged from because the dad doesn’t want to recognize a son who is gay, and then BCY convinces him later in the funniest of ways, and there’s a small subplot at the end in which Ting Shuang is pretty cool, and yep, short and sweet! BCY in the manhua is handsome af too guys ;-;

6. 神木挠不尽 The White Cat’s Divine Scratching Post by 绿野千鹤

Summary: Mo Tian Liao, a weapons forger and master who ruled the Demon Tribe, was hunted down and killed by other righteous sects in the region when he managed to forge an incredibly destructive weapon that could end the world. Before he died, he placed the only thing he loved, a white cat, into a hole in the tree behind him to protect it. The only thing he was grateful for was that he did not create a blood pact with the cat, Xiao Mao, because if he had done so, when he died, Xiao Mao would have died along with him as well.

Right before he dies, unbeknownst to him, Xiao Mao who is no simple demonic cat, wraps part of his consciousness around Mo Tian Liao, and MTL’s spirit ends up floating about for 300 years, until he finds a suitable time to return with a body made out of a special tree and its wood. The first thing he does, of course, is to find his white cat, but he’s poor, and the body he has isn’t powerful, so he joins Wo Yun Sect, the only sect that did not hunt him down that day hundreds of years ago.

There, he is chosen by Qing Tong shizun to be his direct disciple, much to the astonishment of other shizuns in the sect, and Qing Tong’s shixiongs. MTL has never seen a person as beautiful and gorgeous as his shizun, and if only he could find that cat (who’s actually his shizun, who recognizes him and protects him, even if MTL doesn’t actually need much protection).

My Thoughts: This was hilarious as well, and so romantic?!!! Qing Tong/Xiao Mao waited for MTL to come back, and the moment he came back, Qing Tong was there ready to grab him, and then before he went to sleep that night, Qing Tong thought to himself, “I’ve gotten my person back, I can sleep well now” and AHHHHH at this point they weren’t even like a couple yet? MTL ‘kidnapped’ Qing Tong when he was a young demon cat by accident because he likes pretty things (like his shizun lmao) and Qing Tong is attached to him because MTL never forced a blood pact on him, and gave him everything he wanted as a younger cat before MTL died. Gosh, a mirror in #2 and then a cat now with this one. XD

7. 破云 | Breaking the Clouds by 淮上

Summary: Three years ago, Captain Jiang Ting and his team of the Narcotics division perished in an explosion due to a wrong call of his, and he returns three years later under a new identity ready to deal with the people who set him and his team up. He’s caught in what seems to be a simple murder case almost immediately and meets Yan Xie, who’s Vice Captain and in charge of this case. Yan Xie realizes who Jiang Ting is shortly after, and begins to unravel the huge mystery surrounding the events of three years ago, and falls in love with Jiang Ting along the way as well.

My Thoughts: Okay out of the FOUR crime/detective/thriller danmei novels I’ve read, the poyun and tunhai (below) series is the one that MIRRORS actual narcotics division and undercovers the best. It has the complexity and depth of the drugs/narcotics world, and both this one and its sequel focuses a lot on the position of an undercover and mole. I liked this one a lot because there are SOOOO many twists especially in the last arc, like you honestly won’t see any of them coming until it hits you? And Yan Xie is such a confident, rich-ass narcissist, and he keeps asking Jiang Ting if he can “just touch” him ONCE lmao, he’s thick-skinned af, but that’s why he and Jiang Ting are so compatible ;-;.

8. 吞海 | Swallowing the Sea by 淮上

Summary: Sequel to Po Yun. Yu Wu is a young-looking new detective under Captain Bu Chong Hua’s narcotics team. Bu Chong Hua is Yan Xie’s cousin by actual relation, but brother in relationship because BCH’s parents died early and Yan Xie’s parents have been taking care of him mostly. He cannot stand Yu Wu, who seems to want to coast through at work and keep to a 9-5 work schedule.

It’s only after an altercation and Yu Wu dumping his nonchalant facade to snarl at BCH that he realizes that YW is actually more interesting and mysterious than he thought, and he begins to try to get close to him, understand him. It turns out that Yu Wu is a famous undercover who nearly died a year ago during an operation, and due to various reasons, he was assigned to BCH’s team by higher ups so he can peacefully live the rest of his life out there. However, his past catches up with him quickly, and his enemies turning up forces him to rely on BCH.

With BCH, Yu Wu’s resentment of having to be an undercover in the past and being so easily discarded by his team’s leaders, and of him being forced to be in the shadows while others can announce their achievements to the world, is slowly erased, because BCH sees him, knows him, and understands him more than anyone else.

My Thoughts: I actually liked this one better than the first one - Yu Wu is such a pouty, angry little thing?! And for good reason (there’s a bit of cannibalism in the book, not by choice when he was younger and in a poor village in Cambodia, where some militants forced survivors in the village to eat the meat of boiled corpses of other villagers, so YW is a vegetarian, like if he eats meat he gets really sick) and the twists here are even more amazing?! BCH really, really, devotes himself to YW the moment he realizes how much he likes him, doing a 180 degree turn. Instead of Yan Xie’s flamboyance, BCH is much steadier, grouchy, like an old uncle, but also looks at things even more clearly than Yan Xie does sometimes. Yu Wu is understandably bitter about what he had to go through, and BCH is the ONLY person who can calm him down, whom he listens to, which I LOVE. Some highlights:

Yu Wu grew up in a poor village and thus loves money, and he fights in underground betting rings to earn more money - The stash of hidden money he collects I think is half for his escape money, but if he happens to never need it, his dream is to donate the money to his village so they can open up a school there - ANYWAY because Yan Xie’s parents, and technically BCH’s ‘parents’ are soooooo rich right, Yan Xie’s mom shows her approval to her son-in-laws (Jiang Ting first, then Yu Wu), by giving them winter pants. It’s kind of like inside warmers, and usually meant for older ladies to wear LOLOL so Yu Wu was like staring at the pants when he finally got them and looked soooo reluctant until Jiang Ting told him it costs $6,000 AND HE WAS LIKE :333333 okie

He acts a lot like a kid?!! He likes eating like some snack but it’s really unhealthy for him, and BCH the mother hen keeps catching him in weird places like the toilet, where he’s hiding from BCH so he can eat his fave snack?! And the whole police station knows not to give YW what he wants in terms of snacks and smokes because once BCH finds out, he makes life very difficult for them HAHAHAHA

9. 穿成反派如何活命 | How to Survive as A Villain by 伊依以翼

Summary: Rich and handsome CEO Xiao Yu An finds out he has a terminal illness (cancer), and dies while he’s reading this online novel, where a king mistreats the crown prince from a neighbouring state which sent him over as hostage after losing a war, and ends up being killed by the crown prince years later (SVSSS much?!). He wakes up AS THE KING, and afraid of dying, he immediately goes about befriending the prince, Yan He Qing. Yan He Qing falls in love with Xiao Yu An while being his friend/hostage/bodyguard, and Xiao Yu An tries to avoid all the deaths he read in the book, while making sure Yan He Qing manages to find his three/four wives, including Xiao Yu An’s sister.

Of course, because Xiao Yu An showed him warmth and kindness, Yan He Qing ends up falling for him instead, and Xiao Yu An is an absolute oblivious idiot because he REALLY doesn’t realize until much later. Yan He Qing ends up declaring war on Xiao Yu An’s kingdom because he is duty bound to do so, but doesn’t hurt Xiao Yu An, wanting to keep him by his side, but YHQ’s scheming uncle drives a wedge between them, and XYA leaves, breaking YHQ’s heart.

They meet again a few years later, where XYA is training to be a physician in a small village and chances upon a severely injured YHQ. There, he realizes that it was all a misunderstanding, and that YHQ actually LIKES, LIKES him, but before they can enjoy this short period of happiness, disaster strikes again.

My Thoughts: THIS WAS really enjoyable, and with the manhua visuals, it is *chef’s kiss*. I think this transmigration version actually delved into the part where XYA is unable to change everything, and if he saves one person, someone else is destined to die, and that moral dilemma devastates him a lot. In this novel he actually transmigrates TWICE, once into the king’s body, and the second time into a neighbouring state’s prince/king’s body, who looks exactly like his modern self after. YHQ is real sweet to him istg, and I like that the epilogues are SUPER EXTENSIVE, including an arc where YHQ and XYA transmigrate back to the real world and everyone who died is alive and close to them, and gets their happy ending ;-;
