“pansy, that’s disgusting.” you said, revolted, watching your girlfriend pull one of the nerves of the cut-up frog on the tray between you two.

with a pinch of that specific nerve, the frog would flinch up, despite being dead already.

“why?” she said, pinching the nerve to match the syllable. “it’s just nature.” she said, picking up the frog with her gloved hands and going to put it towards you.

but you were too fast, and sped to the other side of the table, your feet faced away from each other, trying to predict her next move.

then, with a calm expression taking over the smirk on her lips (and somehow in her pupils), she put the frog back on the tray, facing up.

“truce?” she said, holding out her blue-gloved pinky.

suspiciously, you stepped closer, sliding the tray with the amphibian corpse to the other side, so she couldn’t make any sudden movements again.

then, sighing, you took her pinky in yours, squeezing it. “okay.” you said, giving her a quick peck on the lips, missing the slight blush that tinged her cheeks when you did.

“okay.” she smiled at you as you came around the table to take her side. “so, what’s next, love? we’ve already taken out the lungs,” pansy explained, wiggling the pair of lungs in the air between her forceps. “so last before the spell is…”

“the heart.” you frowned, looking to your right, where the frog laid, lifeless.

“don’t worry, my sweet.” pansy said, kissing your ear before going over to bring the frog back. “if we do this right, we’ll be able to bring him back.” she smiled at you, before looking back down at the frog.

“okay, let’s get started!” you beamed, gathering the materials needed for the last procedure.

after about ten minutes, you were able to extract the heart, leaving the frog empty of organs in its body, hollow.

“okay, now all the spell calls for is a pinch of living blood.” pansy said, immediately volunteering herself over you as she poked a thumbtack into her forearm. “ouch.” she muttered between her breath, making a face that made your heart twist.

“i hope this works.” you said, looking over at the frog one last time before dripping the blood inside the hollowed out carcass as you stepped back.

lacing your fingers with hers, you turned to the frog before saying the spell.

“ready?” pansy turned her head to you momentarily before you nodded, each of you holding your wand in opposite hands.

waving your wands, you directed the spell towards the corpse before saying the spell. “vivacorpus!”

then, as magical as you were, there you stood, stunned. the frog’s body had been healed, now looking meaty and whole again as it turned off its back to hop over the table and towards you.

hopping over to your girlfriend, you let go of her hand as she bent down to pick it up. “aww!” pansy said, holding the frog sweetly to her chest. “i’m gonna name you “heart.””

curious, you quirked a brow, exchanging a quick glance with the frog’s full-of-life eyes.

“why heart?” you asked, now stepping a little closer, seeing that the frog was calm.

“because you have mine. and now that he has my blood, technically, so does he!” she smiled, contently, rubbing the frog’s back.

with a flat look, you stared at heart, then back up at your girlfriend. “you’re saying i have to compete with a frog now?”

“aw, sweetheart,” pansy said, pulling you closer, against your wishes. then, with a gentle kiss on the lips that made your stomach tingle, you smiled. “you will never have to compete for me.”

“hm,” you hummed, a sweetness to your tone. “i love y-“

“he literally has my blood. there’s no point in competing to lose!” she said, laughing as you shoved her to the side.

“what! it’s true!”

She rushed to get her things into her bag. Study session was over and Pansy was waiting for her. So with her back to him, already leaving, she called out, “Love you, bye!” She didn’t think anything of it. They were friends. She said it to all her friends. It was true anyway. She did love him. More than she cared to admit, though she wasn’t even saying it in the way she wished she could. She was also in fact leaving. A farewell such as her simple “bye” was solely the product of her being well mannered. So, “Love you, bye!” was not a big deal. She said it all the time. Not to him, but she was hoping she could start.

“Say it again.” She stopped in her tracks but didn’t turn to face him. “Bye?” Did he not hear it the first time? “No.” Confused, she turned on her heel and faced her potions partner with a questioning raised eyebrow. They didn’t often need words to communicate, she wondered why hers mattered now. “The other part.” Draco wasn’t rolling his eyes, he wasn’t teasing or honestly confused. He had an expression on his face she couldn’t quite figure out. A slight frown caused subtle wrinkles in between his eyebrows. She wished she could kiss it all away. She smiled at the thought before remembering what was actually the “other part” of her send-off. “I love you?” Now her own eyebrows were creased, she didn’t quite understand what he wanted, but still, she just couldn’t shake the smile off her face. Maybe she just liked how these three little words rolled so easily off her tongue. They felt so loud against the otherwise silent library. She could only hope he liked hearing it as much as she loved saying it.

Lost in her thoughts, she barely caught how he let his head fall back and sighed. It wasn't really from relief. It felt more like contentment, satisfaction… pleasure. She just watched, Pansy long forgotten, as he ran his hand down his face and said, “C’mere.” And she did. As she came closer to his seat she looked around. Empty. They were completely alone in the library and her heart started to beat just a tad faster. “Draco…” He closed his eyes again. Savouring the sound. “Fuck… I never knew I’d love hearing my own name so bad.” She took another step. “Draco…” It was barely a whisper, a question, though she did not know which one exactly she was asking. He kept his eyes closed, even as he felt her knees hit his. “Dra-” “Say it again.” A smile couldn’t help but creep up her face. “Which part?” Opening his eyes, he rested his hands on the back of her thighs. “All of it.” He looked up at her, not used to such a vulnerable position. Yet, here he was, putty in her hands, begging to hear simple words, without even caring if they were true. She smiled and put her hands through his hair. Maybe it was the fact that they were already in such a compromising position or maybe it was just the opportunity that shutting his eyes again gave her. She wouldn’t have to hide the smile, or the blush, or the overall expression on her face that gave away how much she was truly enjoying it all. “I love you, Draco.” He didn’t open his eyes. He truly believed he would never again be able to. Not after hearing an angel speak of love and uttering the name of constellations without ever mentioning the night sky. He experienced the divine and couldn’t simply go back to a hardly enjoyable existence, where her hands weren’t in his hair and his own name wasn’t such ear-candy. He rested his forehead on her torso, just in front of him. It felt so easy, they were just so close, in every sense of the word. Barely lowering her head, she whispered in his ear, “I love you. I love you, Draco.”

How did they get there? Where along the way did longing stares and brush of hands become holding of thighs, caressing of hair, and deeply sincere “I love yous”? It didn’t really matter, all these questions about how and why and where and when. It was already happening and it felt so much better than any stolen glances and sleepless nights.

So, she said it again. “Draco, I love you.” “Yeah…” “I love you, Draco.” “Again…” “I love you.” “Mmm hmm��” That was all he could manage. He was basking in the affection he’d always dreamed of. He was high on it. Hooked on it. It consumed his very being. “I love you.” She’d say, kissing the top of his platinum hair. “I’ll tell you a thousand times a day if that’s what you want to hear. I’ll tell you even when you don’t ask me to.” She takes his face, guiding his gaze back to her. When he finally opens his eyes back up, he speaks before she ever gets a chance to. “I love you, Y/n.” She closes her eyes, relishing the words he had just said. “Fuck… it does sound quite good when it’s the right person saying it…”

Upon reflecting this past year, I’m reminded of one area as a fandom citizen that i am lacking - reading fic. And so was born an idea to canvas my fandom family and friends to share with me a fic they've written, art they've created, a podfic they've recorded in 2023 of which they are most proud.

This two part 'rec yourself' list is the result.

Part One features Drarry creations (heavily featured since that's my OTP). Part Two (here) includes a kick-ass mix of various HP ships and ships from other fandoms, including Carry On, Check Please!, Good Omens, Teen Wolf, and Stranger Things. Also, and most importantly, each entry presents a smol blurb from the creator about why they chose their particular piece as their 2023 favorite.

For ease in reading, I've also placed all submitted works posted to AO3 into a filterable bookmark collection, Rec Yourself 2023. Be aware that there's a range of ratings and archive/creator tags, so please, take appropriate responsibility for your personal consumption. In *Coffee and a Croissant*, I put a lot of myself in my ace and autistic Albus. He is very dear to me in this story, and in my Fizzy Lifting Drinks drabble. The fic is just a toe-dip in the Soulmate waters where Albus grapples with what to do if he is someone’s Soulmate, but they’re not his. Parts 2 and 3 are in the works, but there is no timeline on either of them. Maybe in 2024?

✩ @crazybutgood ✩ I Bloom Pink For You HP | Narcissa Malfoy x Pansy Parkinson | 993 FIC + ORIGAMI COMIC | M rating | HP Bodice Ripper Fest 2023 This whole idea came about because I got so excited to fold a corset for hp bodice ripper fest, realised I couldn't just submit that one thing, and started brainstorming more loose ideas. It all clicked together when I was inspired by a fic by @schmem14, whose writing I adore. I was so grateful and even more excited when Em gave permission to make this. From there started the self-indulgent process of folding fancy things with fancier papers for this origami comic, and I couldn't have done it without Em and my lovely support team.

✩ @seekercass ✩ Something Cosmic HP | Cedric x Draco x Harry | 1.7k FIC | M rating | Polyship Week 2022 A self-rec that I am still extremely proud of is a short fic written for Polyshipping Week 2022 called Something Cosmic. It's a small coda to Something Good to Always Keep, another fic that I wrote for Quidditch Fest 2021 that I cherish very much. Even though writing is still hard for me these days, I often think about this 'verse and what life is like for Harry, Draco and Cedric after they graduated from Oxford. These three and slice of life bring me such joy. I hope to write more of them.

✩ @roseharpermaxwell ✩ Sounds Worth It HP | Hermione x Draco | 5k FIC | T rating | D/Hr Advent 2023 Being nominated for d/hr advent was a sweet surprise. It gave me a good excuse to remember how to write and the nudge I needed to create something this year.

✩ @basicallyahedgehog ✩ (They) Keep Me Warm HP | Hermione x Harry x Ron | 5.8k FIC | E rating | HP Trans Fest 2023 This was my transfest fic - I wrote it as a love letter to all my trans and Enby friends and as a way of processing some of my own feelings. It’s my first (and so far only) foray into poly golden trio and I loved playing with their dynamics with that added layer to their relationship.

✩ @lumosatnight ✩ For I Have Found Salvation HP | Harry x Severus | 7.1k FIC | E rating | Snarry AUctoberfest 2023 Although this is a smut fic at its core, I tried really hard to make the pacing flow, bringing in background characters, and creating memorable imagery. I am very proud of how it turned out. However, this is probably my favorite fic from 2023 simply for the fact that I had the most fun writing it!

✩ @sugareey-makes-stuff ✩ Feel You Breathing Teen Wolf | Derek Hale x Stiles Stilinski | 8.4k TEXTING FIC | E rating | 2023 Year of the OTP This is my fav 2023 piece because I learned how to create a custom text message AO3 skin, stylize things for plain text reading, and I wrote a whole story that had some plot that was told through text messages. Also, I did not know I could achieve so much spiciness and throw in so many bad pick-up lines through this medium, but hey, the more you know! XD

Possessive stalker Draco sets out to win over Ron in this creepy thriller, but there’s a catch: Ron is already in love with Draco’s boyfriend, Harry.

That was important to me, and I think I succeeded. Posting the first fic on ao3 with this triad tag doesn't hurt either.

It started off as a drabble and ended up 26k because I just had a blast writing it and the fandom support was so lovely. Last but not least, Pato made an absolutely stunning art piece for this fic, and it was the best present ever.

✩ @wynnyfryd ✩ i don’t know, you figure it out Stranger Things | Steve Harrington x Eddie Munson | 35.4k WIP FIC | E rating bragging about yourself is difficult, but i’ll just say it’s my favorite because i’m proud of myself for sticking to one project for this long, i love all the artwork the fic has inspired, and i just think the line “the river styx must taste like pennies” fucks severely lmao.

✩ @decaflondonfog ✩ growing pains Check Please! | Eric Bittle x Kent Parson | 50k FIC | T rating i am not usually a long fic gal, which i think is in part lack of patience, but also how attached i get to a universe if i’m working on it for a longer period of time. i finished writing this back in june but this fic felt very “me” in many ways and i think about them so often still so it’s definitely my 2023 creation i’m proudest of!

Draco Malfoy x Reader

I kinda got the ick, because the reader is a bit sensitive, but like- I wrote it, so it's not unbearably pick me... I hope

I saw a prompt on TikTok from @livelybooker that said "When she's ignoring the flowers in his car bc she thinks they aren't hers, but then he's worried she doesn't like them" and so, of course, an idea for a quick blurb came from it, and now there's this.

The Yule ball was nearly over, and as I observed the couples that continued to dance, I couldn't help but feel a little jealous, from the corner I sat in. I looked for the tall blonde boy, for a few minutes before my eyes landed on him, and a bouquet of flowers. I watched a brunette girl shove the bouquet into his face, and walk off. He stood there, yelled something after her, and turned right around to face me, his grey eyes pierced straight through my soul.

I broke eye contact because I promised myself I wouldn’t fall back into this cat-and-mouse game. We were good friends, and that was all. Good friends that had kissed on an occasion or two, but overall we were friends, and when he asked Pansy to the Yule ball, rather than me, his opinion was made clear.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Draco's voice made me snap out of my daze looking up at him, as he leaned over the back of a chair to my side.

"I wasn't really thinking about anything special, just watching the people and the dresses." I lied. Though we had spent a lot of time together I hoped it wasn't so much, that he could sense that I was being untruthful. He looked at me for a minute and seemed to be deciding whether or not he believed me.

"Well I bought you these," the boy smiled as he pulled the flowers from behind his back, to in between us, "They match your dress."

I frowned, seeing as they were the same flowers I just watched Pansy push into his face. His eyebrows scrunched up after I didn't say anything.

"What? You don't like them?" He said, moving to put the flowers on the table, carefully watching my expression.

"Draco, how stupid do you think I am? I just watched Pansy throw those in your face after you offered them to her. Now you want me to take your, stupid, leftover, pity flowers?" I said standing out of my chair to turn and leave. This was the last thing I needed right now. As I exited the great hall I heard his footsteps follow behind me, and speed up as he appeared in front of me.

"Y/n I'm not sure what you think you saw, but I didn't offer your flowers to Pansy Parkinson, of all people," He said trying to explain himself before I walked away again. "Pansy took the flowers from me because she thought they were hers, and when I told her they were for you, she shoved them into my face. I didn't give her the flowers or buy them for her." The boy’s grey eyes seemed to beg for forgiveness with his words.

"How do I know you're not lying to me?" I accused, hoping he was telling the truth.

"If I was lying would I have written a letter in the wrapping?" Draco reassured me, folding back a piece of the paper so I could read it.

Although I'm writing this before the ball, I know you look absolutely gorgeous, hope you'll save me a dance. -Draco

I couldn't help but smile, knowing that I looked way too happy, but I didn't care. The boy was beaming down at me, smiling as hard as I was.

"You think I’m gorgeous?" I teased, looking up at Draco while I put the flowers down on the chair where I was sitting.

"How about I remind you after our dance?" He said as he grabbed my hands, leading me back into the Great Hall.

A/n- Heyy wi! Really sorry for responding to these asks so late! I love this concept so much! Here's your request!

You huffed as you smoothed out the minor crinkles on your dress; you wanted to seem perfect, especially for him. You'd been waiting for this chance to show the world that you're his, and now you'd received it: you'd been invited to the Grand Ball, and your date was none other than your boyfriend, Draco Malfoy.

"Let the ball, commence!!" After that, your hands went straight to Draco's shoulders, and his to your waist, and the two of you swayed like two graceful swans to the music.

"You look ravishing, darling," Draco whispered as he tightened his grip on your waist, "I want to go home already," he groaned as he kissed your neck, sending chills down your spine, "Everyone watching Draco," you said, prompting Draco to tighten his grip even more as the two of you danced.

"Switch partners!" exclaimed the voice, bringing everyone on the dance floor to a halt. "What?" you inquired, to which Draco simply shrugged, as though the others were exchanging partners, so you chose the person on your right.

"How about we dance?" "Oh Y/l/n, this is going to be a lovely dance," said the man, who was none other than Mattheo Riddle, the attractive black-haired boy with curly hair, but his smile quickly went into a smirk as he stretched his arm out, which you took.

"There's a lot for us to catch up on," Mattheo stated as you nodded while swaying to the music. "Also, you look gorgeous tonight," he said, and you laughed. "Thank you, Theo."

Your boyfriend didn't seem to keep his cool while you were talking to your friend; he scoffed as you laughed with Mattheo at a joke he cracked; he was dancing with Pansy Parkinson, who looked at you and then at Draco and sighed, "Relax Draco, they are just laughing," she said; "How would you know the difference between laughing and flirting?" he asked as his blood boiled.

Pansy kept her mouth shut and when the dance was over, she signaled to you with her eyes that Draco was mad at you.

"How was the dance?" As he neared you two, Draco inquired, "Oh, it was fantastic, wasn't it, Y/n?" "It was absolutely fantastic Theo," you remarked as you smiled at Mattheo as he winked at you. "Oh, really? Then why don't you start dating right now?" As wrath raged through Draco's body, he said.

"Relax, Draco, I'm not here to steal your girl," Mattheo said as he lifted his hands in the air; instead, Draco stared at him, indicating his intention to depart, and you turned to Draco.

"Draco, it was just a dance." "Yeah, whatever," he replied as he was ready to walk away when you grabbed his wrist and stopped him. "You idiot! Why would I love him when I already have feelings for you? "You stated this as you approached him and kissed his cheek, making him blush.

Draco leaned closer as you took a step back, saying in your ear, "I'll be waiting for you in our room, don't be late," kissing your cheek and leaving you to find your way to the room you shared with him.

"Draco, please listen to me! You need to listen to me, I didn't even know!" You said desperately.

"Stop the lie Y/n! I saw it with m-my own eyes! I-I saw you kissing him! I can't believe that Pansy had to bring this to my notice!" His voice choked as he held back sobs.

"Draco you're still not listening! Just let me explain-"

"Explain what?! That 'Oh Draco it was a mistake! It's all a misunderstanding!'" He yelled at you.

"Because it is! It is a huge misunderstanding!" Tears were now freely flowing down your face.

"Enough, I can't listen to your excuses, because if I do then I will forgive you, and I still want to be mad at you." Tears now fell down his face too, as he turned towards the door and made his way out.

You fell to your knees, your chest tightening with pain, again. Regret clouding your senses. How did things go so wrong? It's all because of the stupid mistake that you made last night of getting drunk to the point of completely blacking out.

All you could remember from last night was the loud music thumping against the walls as you downed vodka shots one by one carelessly. The alcohol in your system loosening you and your body and mind. As you danced in the dark,crowded room with minimal lighting, arms encircled your waist and a face bent down to kiss your neck. Your sense of vision was completely blurry, the only smell you could detect was alcohol and even though the feeling of the arms wasn't familiar, you let yourself believe that it was none other than the love of your life, Draco. Greeting him with a kiss on his lips, you came face to face with a horrific realization that it wasn't Draco. You felt yourself losing your breath as your chest tightened and within a few seconds, you felt your entire world turn black and void.

The similar feeling of a panic attack returning back, as you gasped for breath and clutched on to the nearest object for your dear life. But, it was worthless as you felt yourself losing consciousness again.

Draco entered the common room quietly and in a sombreful manner. He wasn't ready to believe it yet that Y/n would do this with him, but he saw that with his own eyes. Tears threatened to fall down his eyes again at the mere thought of Y/n.

"Y/n fainted after that, the drug must have been way too strong for her. But, she did look horrified when I kissed her, she was probably expecting that love-sick puppy of hers. So, you can say that last night was a failure." A masculine, arrogant voice reached his ears as he turned towards his dorm.

"That's not a worry, they're probably broken up by now, so you can try to set yourself up with Y/n a few days later and I'll do that with Draco." Parkinson. It was Pansy Parkinson, the whole time, orchestrating this evil plan of hers. How immature could she be?

Somehow fighting his urge to smack those idiots into oblivion, and without even waiting for a second, Draco immediately made a dash towards the opposite direction. He should have listened to her, he should have let her explain.

Frantically running up the stairs, he kept on wishing that she was still there. He should not have given up on them like that. He just cannot give up on them like that. But, when he reached there, his heart shattered into a million pieces at the sight of his beloved woman lying unconscious on the floor, with tear stains on her face, disheveled clothes and messy hair. Cradling her body gently in his arms, he pointed his wand towards her face and muttered an 'Aguamenti' to wake her up.

"D-Draco, you're here?"

"I am."

"Draco, I am so sorry. I was so stupid. Please let me explain."

"I already know what happened and I know you didn't do anything. They drugged you."

"What?"

"Yes, Parkinson and that jerk from last night think that they are very smart, but then they proceed to discuss their plans in the common room. Don't worry, I will let you explain. You are already forgiven. After we talk, we are going to get them expelled."

"Draco,I love you."

"I know Darling, I love you too." He said as he planted a kiss on her forehead and wiped away her tears with his thumb.

"Draco?"

"Yes?"

"I am never drinking after this."
