Loki’s lying in his bed, clutching the book you had loaned him close to his chest.
He finished the book the first night of having it, and he regrets not pacing himself because he still has six days before he can see you again and isn’t sure how to keep himself sane until then. He doesn’t have much to his name anymore, having missed eleven years of his life and his home having been destroyed. So it’s not like he can turn to his favorite books or activities.
The Avengers had reluctantly agreed, mostly out of guilt because of Thor’s previous loss, to let Loki stay in the compound under the condition that he did not leave, did not use his magic unsupervised, and did not cause chaos. It had been an incredibly difficult adjustment, especially on his part, but he was willing to do whatever it took to see you again. So he did not complain even once.
When Loki had returned from timeline 656, the timeline in which he first met you, he was broken but determined. He was on a mission and refused to get distracted until his job was done. He had to find you again. He didn’t know what he was going to do if he didn’t.
So when Mobius agreed to bring Loki to this point of the timeline, he had given Loki the information to be able to find you.
You were his insurance, a way to make sure Loki stayed in his place.
So after two weeks of near perfect behavior and constant sulking from the trickster, Steve and Tony agreed that Loki could leave the compound, though only under Thor’s supervision.
When he first saw you again in that tiny bookstore, he felt like he had been hit in the chest by Thor’s hammer. He thought he was prepared to see you again. Your bright eyes and soft lips were all he could think about the past several months. But apparently, he wasn’t prepared in the slightest.
But you being you, you gave him a sweet smile and kindly helped him find the book you had told him about when the two of you had first met back in timeline 656. Because no matter the timeline, you were always one to help others.
And then you did something he wasn’t expecting. The possibility wasn’t even on his radar. You gave him your own copy to read, telling him it was so he had to come back and see you. He felt his chest constrict in that moment, yet at the same time a spark of hope exploded inside of him. It was something that he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Then when you asked him for his name, his heart broke again.
He had forgotten to even give you his name, because he had already known yours. Your name, your scent, your favorite laugh, your body.
He knew it all.
Yet you knew nothing about him. And after telling you his name, he was afraid you’d remember what he’d done to your city all those years ago. That you’d be afraid of him and reject him, just like most everyone else in his life. He wouldn’t blame you. He believed himself a monster, just like everyone else did.
But he kept himself from spiraling into his dark thoughts with the sole knowledge that the version of you in timeline 656 wasn’t scared of him. Not even before he explained to you what had really happened.
No, you had accepted him, helped him, and eventually loved him.
He could only hope that this version of you could do the same.
***
The day you met Loki, you were a bit shell shocked.
He left almost immediately after telling you his name, and you watched as he met up with a much larger blonde man before walking away. It took your brain one too many seconds to realize the blonde was Thor, making Loki the actual Loki. The Loki that reigned chaos and destruction to your beloved city all those years ago.
A few pieces of information struck you throughout the day, startling you each time:
Number one; you had actually hit on a literal god. The God of Mischief, no less.
Number two; he actually flirted back! What the fuck?
Number three; he never asked for your name.
And number four; you weren’t scared of him. More than that, you weren’t even angry with him.
You couldn’t for the life of you figure out why. Why he didn’t intimidate you. Why you felt as if you understood him. Or why you felt like you knew him, more intimately than just having heard of him. You had only spoken to the man once, for crying out loud.
The week passes by incredibly slowly, and every time you think about your interaction or of seeing Loki again, butterflies come to life in your belly and a smile slowly comes across your face.
But today is finally the day.
It’s a quarter past eleven when the door to the shop opens, the small wind chime signaling someone had entered. You look up from your current read and see Loki taking a few short steps to the counter. He’s dressed to the nines again, wearing a dark grey suit with minimal green accents.
He looks positively delicious, and you curse yourself for letting that thought slip. You slide your bookmark into your novel before setting it on a small shelf behind you.
“Hey! You came back!” You say, your voice a few pitches higher than usual. You really weren’t expecting him to actually return the book himself. In fact, you weren’t sure what you expected at all.
He nods, “Of course, darling. I wanted to see you again,” his voice is deep and his eyes are trained on yours, “And discuss the book, obviously,” He lifts the loved copy in his hand, held between his nimble fingers.
Warmth blooms in your chest and you smile shyly. Your eyes flicker to the window where you saw Thor waiting last week.
“Where’s your chaperone?”
Loki raises a brow, glancing to the window next to him.
“I saw Thor meet you when you left last week.”
Realization dawns on Loki’s face, “Ah, yes. I must be accompanied by my brother at all times outside of the Avengers Compound. It is a term of my arrangement.”
“Arrangement?” You ask, cocking your head slightly.
For a moment, Loki falters. He’s said too much, explaining his situation could cause more questions to arise, and he did not need that right now. Because how in the nine realms would he answer them?
So instead of answering, he sets the book on the counter in between the two of you and smiles, “Nothing for you to concern yourself, dear. I would much rather talk about the blatant misinformation contained in this book.”
His tone is light and playful, so you laugh and pull the book closer to you, “Misinformation? You mean to tell me that you didn’t give birth to a horse?”
Loki rolls his eyes, “Gods, no! I did no such thing. Nor am I the father of Fenrir, Jormungandr, or Hela.” He makes a disgusted face.
“That’s a shame,” You fake pout, “You just ruined my favorite book for me.”
He scoffs, “Darling, I am the living, breathing version of the character in your book. How could a novel be more interesting than the real deal?”
You look at him, a mischievous glint in your eye, and Loki feels his heart jump in his throat. He’s seen that look before. The way your nose crinkles just slightly, causing your eyebrows to scrunch, barely noticeable. There’s a sparkle in your eye, one that tells Loki every time that you’re up to no good.
It was one of the many reasons he fell so hard for you.
“You’re very handsome, I’ll give you that. But I just think Book Loki has more layers. Ya know?”
Normally, if you had made a comment like that, Loki would have pinned you against a wall and put you in your place.
But that was another time. One that Loki desperately hoped would come to him once more.
“Well, I think that if you come to know me better, you shall see I am much more… Complex than you humans have made me out to be.” His voice has lowered a few tones, sweet and smooth like honey.
He’s closer now, leaning over with his forearms on the counter, and you feel a warmth spread across your belly. You curse yourself and discreetly press your thighs together.
But unbeknownst to you, Loki knew every single one of your mannerisms, quirks, and habits. And by default, he saw the little movement you made, and had to use his glamour to hide the way his body reacted.
Conversation flowed from there, banter flying back and forth, your quick wit almost matching his.
It somehow felt normal to you. Comfortable. It was bizarre and pleasant at the same time.
But for Loki, it was just a painful reminder of what he lost so many months ago.
Before he knew it, there was a single knock against the front window, signaling that his time was up. The both of you glanced up to see Thor, dressed in jeans and a casual cotton jacket, peeking inside.
Loki sighs, “While I wish I could stay longer and chat, I fear I must take my leave.” He stands from the chair you had pulled up next to you and straightens his jacket.
Your heart drops slightly, not wanting him to leave, and you stand with him.
“Well, how about I give you another book to read?”
“I was already planning on coming back,” He smirks, tilting slightly downward, “But I shan’t turn down a chance to read a book.”
“Good, because I love this one too.” You tell him, grabbing the book from your stash. You rip a piece of receipt paper from the small printer and quickly scribble on it, then tuck it into the front cover.
“And my name is Y/N, by the way. I didn’t get a chance to tell you last week.”
Loki smiles and takes the book from you, walking towards the door.
“Well, Y/N, it has been a pleasure. I shall see you again next week.”
***
“Brother, I see you have another book.” Thor says as he moves to walk alongside Loki, who was already reading the book summary.
Loki only makes a hum of acknowledgment, but doesn’t say anything.
They walk in silence towards the secluded alley where Loki can transport them back to the compound without curious eyes.
The silence is comfortable, yet eerie. Thor is still recovering from the shock of having Loki back, though it wasn’t the same Loki he lost on that forsaken ship.
And Loki… He’s just trying to wrap his head around everything that has happened. Everything he missed because he jumped from 2012 to 2021. He didn’t get to say goodbye to Frigga. He didn’t get to have a last look at Asgard. And now the one woman Loki is sure he cannot live without, doesn’t remember him.
They get back to the compound without incident, and Loki heads back to his room like he always does, choosing to interact with the Avengers as little as possible, lest there be a fight.
He tilts his head up slightly, eyes screwed shut and fingers pinching the bridge of his nose, “Friday, is it? Where is the spider child?”
“Peter is in the penthouse. Would you like me to relay a message to him?”
Loki bites his lip. Is he really going to do this?
Yes, he supposes he is.
“Can you ask him to come to my quarters?”
“Of course.”
Loki paces, waiting for Peter. After several minutes, there’s a tentative knock at the door.
“Come in.”
It opens slowly, revealing a confused Peter.
“Hey, Friday said you asked for me?”
“Yes.” Loki nods, then hands the boy a small piece of paper.
The same paper you put into the book earlier in the day.
Peter, now fully in the room, takes the paper and shoots a curious glance at Loki, before reading.

I don’t know if you have a cell phone, or even know what one is.
But if you do, feel free to text or call me :)

“If you tell anyone about this, I shall have your head.” Loki hisses, but there’s no heat behind it. Peter is one of the few humans Loki cares about dearly. The little shit had somehow managed to weasel his way into Loki’s notoriously cold heart within the first week.
And Peter knew this.
“Yeah, yeah,” He smirks, “Why are you showing it to me in the first place?”
“While I know what a cell phone is, I am unsure about how to acquire one. That is where you come in.”
Peter’s eyes light up, “Oh, this is going to be so much fun!”
Loki crosses his arms, fearing he may come to regret this.
***
“What do you want?”
“It’s been a while. Nice hearing your voice.”
“The feeling isn’t mutual.”
“Ouch.”
“Answer my question.”
“I want you to join us, of course. Thought that was clear by now.”
“Fuck off.”
“Well, figured I’d try... Anyways, I received word that Loki is back on Earth.”
“Not sure why you think I care, or how this concerns me.”
“I would like for you to bring him in.”
“I don’t work for you. Use your own goons.”
“He’s protected by Thor, and the Avengers by default. But you could easily-”
“Like I said. I don’t work for you. Why don’t you try intimidating one of your other experiments?”
“Star-”
“That’s not my name. Goodbye.”

"Hey Loki, mind if I ask you a question?"
Casey and Loki were eating lunch in the TVA cafeteria, as they regularly did. Loki was still surprised at how Casey had somehow grown fond of him, where many people kept their distance. Which he couldn't blame them for, given his past.
So he was enjoying these moments with Casey.
"Since when do you need to ask?"
Casey looked a little hesitant, "well, it's a little bit of a personal question."
"Go on and shoot." Loki replied, curious as to what the man was going to ask him.
"Ahem... you and Mobius are together."
"I think that's obvious, since we don't hide it."
"Yeah, yeah, and so considering it's been over a year, um... I guess... you guys have dated already... and uh... I have a hard time imagining what you and Mobius can do on a date." Casey paused, his cheeks on fire before continuing, "No, forget it. I should never have asked you something like that."
Loki shook his head and laughed, "No, no, I have no problem talking about this. You're talking to someone who didn't even know what a date was until a few months ago..."
Loki straightened up a bit in his chair and continued talking, "Looking back, I'd say our first date took place here."
"Here?"
1.
After their return from Pompeii, Loki had fallen asleep in the middle of their research. Mobius had woken him up and taken him to the cafeteria. Thinking back, even if at that moment they were not together, for Loki it was still a first date.
There were only them in the cafeteria, the light was rather dim, which had given even more of an impression of intimacy and in addition there was the close way they were sitting, their legs touching.
Loki remembered perfectly all the details of that moment.
Those few minutes of respite, where they had gotten to know each other, or rather where Loki had gotten to know Mobius.
"By the way, at your desk, that magazine?"
"Yeah. The one on jet skis?"
"Yes. Why do you have that?"
"Because they're awesome."
There was something touching about Mobius as he spoke of his passion, a passion he had never practiced.
"So, why read about them?"
"It just helps remind me of what we're fighting for."
"I mean, you really believe in all this stuff, don't you?"
"I don't get hung up on, "Believe, not believe." I just accept what is."
He was surprised by what followed, not by the content, because it was clear that Mobius really believed in the cause he was working for, but he was surprised that Mobius did not feel attacked, that they both left the dialogue open, without judgment.
"Actually it's exactly the same thing. Because if you think too hard about where any of us came from, who we truly are, it sounds kinda ridiculous. Existence is chaos. Nothing makes any sense, so we try to make some sense of it. And I'm just lucky that the chaos I emerged into gave me all this... My own glorious purpose."
Mobius' arguments, in the context in which Mobius lived, had held up surprisingly well.
They had not agreed, but they respected each other's opinions. If not for the context, of Loki in captivity of sorts, and the lie upon which the TVA had been built, the evening could almost have ended in "My place or yours." Because undoubtedly they had gotten closer at that point.
So yes, it was indeed for Loki their first date and that's what he told Casey.
**********
"Honestly Loki, I have to say that this is an original first date, but ultimately a true reflection of your couple." reacted Casey with a wink before continuing, "but now I'm curious what your other dates were like, if there were any at all."
Loki laughed softly, "Oh there were, many. Mobius, knowing that the concept of a date was totally unknown to me, redoubled his creativity and used this pretext to make me live all sorts of unknown experiences."
"You don't want me to feel sorry for you, do you?"
Loki smiled again, "Oh no, I have nothing to complain about at all. I'll tell you the most memorable ones for me. One of them was a picnic."
"Oh?" Casey's eyes sparkled with interest, as he settled down to listen to Loki's tale.
2.
Loki was reading on the couch when Mobius hugged him from behind, kissing the top of his head.
Then Mobius had said in his ear, "Sweetheart, don't be scared, I'm going to blindfold you, because I'd like to take you somewhere and keep it a surprise until the end."
Loki trusted Mobius completely so it was easy for him to agree.
"I'm really curious though."
Once the blindfold was tied, he felt the light caress of a kiss on his lips and Mobius took his hand.
He let himself be guided.
He heard the typical sound of a timedoor appearing, and then letting himself be pulled by Mobius' hand, he recognized the usual sensation that accompanied the crossing of the door.
He felt a difference in the ground under his feet, like grass perhaps.
Deprived of sight, his other senses were alert, so he also felt the warmth of the sun on his face and the smell of flowers reached his nostrils, while he heard birds chirping around them.
Mobius was now holding him by the elbow and guiding him gently.
"You still okay, sweetheart?"
Loki simply nodded, a smile on his face because he could feel the excitement in his lover's voice.
After a while, Mobius stopped him, and made him sit slowly on the floor, on something soft. Then Mobius gently removed the blindfold.
Loki's eyes adjusted to the radiant light even though they were in shadow, and he took in the sight.
77_Frigga... the little planet Mobius had already taken him to when Loki had told him he missed the starry skies of Asgard.
Loki looked around, he was sitting on a blanket spread on the ground, under a tree that while providing shade, did not deprive them of the beautiful light. They were in a field of flowers, the same paradisiacal vision as on their first visit here. Mobius sat next to him and clearly waited for his reaction.
Loki leaned in and put his lips to Mobius', letting him know in a slow, passionate kiss how much he enjoyed his surprise.
Mobius turned to a basket that Loki hadn't noticed and began to pull out everything needed for a perfect picnic.
"Did you pack all this?" Mobius nodded his head and Loki kissed him gently again.
They enjoyed the meal peacefully, chatting about everything and anything. Once the leftovers were put away, Loki lay down on his back, his head on Mobius' lap
"Thanks love, that was amazing."
Mobius, a little embarrassed, leaned over and kissed him tenderly.
They had finished the afternoon while enjoying the heavenly surroundings and each other's presence.
**********
Loki lost in his memories, was brought out of his reverie by Casey's whisper of admiration, "Aww, Mobius is really dedicated, you know you are lucky right?"
"Don't worry Casey, I'm totally aware of how lucky I am."
This reminded him, another original date, another surprise from Mobius that he was quick to tell Casey about
3.
Sounds from the kitchen woke Loki from his sleep. He stretched, shivering because the sheet had slipped down to his waist.
"You're awake."
Loki looked up to find Mobius smiling at him, standing by the bedroom door, dressed in just sweatpants and a t-shirt, his longer hair still disheveled and a budding beard. A perfect view to start the day, in Loki's opinion.
What caught his eye was the tray in his hands.
Mobius moved closer, carefully perching himself on the bed and balancing the tray on his lap.
"I wanted to surprise you." Mobius smiled, offering the tray to Loki and laughing affectionately as he watched him contort himself to sit up. "Breakfast in bed or let's call it a breakfast date. I thought it would be a nice change, since it's our day off."
Loki's mouth suddenly watered between what he saw and what he smelled.
Usually they had a light breakfast, but on days off, getting up later, breakfast also served as lunch.
On the tray was a plate of bacon and eggs, buttered toast, a small pile of pancakes covered in syrup, a large glass of orange juice, and an assortment of fresh fruit.
"Oh Love, you spoil me." said Loki, a piece of pancake already in his mouth.
Mobius shakes his head with a small laugh. "I always want to spoil you."
Loki leaned forward to capture Mobius' lips in a sweet kiss. Mobius took the opportunity to sneak his hand through Loki's hair and pulled him to him while being careful not to flip the tray.
When they separated, Loki was out of breath.
"Let's eat."
Mobius sat next to Loki, the tray resting on their knees. They ate breakfast, talking, feeding each other.
Later, Loki hummed over one last incredibly delicious bite, his head resting on Mobius' shoulder.
Definitely, this dating concept was quite interesting.
*********
"Okay Loki, thanks to you, now I'm hungry." Casey paused for a moment and then resumed staring Loki up and down, "But I wonder where you put it all..."
Loki replied with a mischievous smile, " Workout, Casey, workout..." His impish look left no doubt as to what kind of workout he was referring to.
Casey pretended to cover his ears. "I don't want to hear about it!"
Loki chuckled, "Too bad you won't hear about another memorable date of ours."
Casey, calmed down, too interested in what was next.
4.
"Uh, wow, that's... that's gorgeous." said Loki, looking around their living room.
The entire room was bathed in a soft glow from a multitude of small candles, scattered here and there.
"Do you like it?" the voice of Mobius whispered in his ear as his lover took off his jacket, before hugging him from behind.
"Hmm." Loki nodded in the embrace.
"I figured we both needed a little break, are you hungry?"
"I'm starving." replied Loki turning his head to drop a kiss on Mobius' cheek.
His lover directed him to the table that Loki had not noticed, perfectly set, bathed in soft light, and garnished with two steaming plates and glasses of fresh wine.
Mobius gallantly pulled out the chair for him to sit on and took a seat opposite him.
They began to eat, discussing their day, their work, and all the while hardly letting go of each other's hands that were entwined on the table.
Then after the dessert, Mobius got up, took the remote control of the music system and a soft music invaded the atmosphere. Under the eyes of Loki, he approached him and offered his hand, « May I have this dance, sweetheart?"
Loki nodded, smiling softly, and took the outstretched hand. Mobius immediately wrapped his arms around him and they began to sway to the soft notes coming from the speakers.
Loki sighed with contentment, his face buried in Mobius' neck.
They must have looked like the epitome of sap and fluff, but at that moment, Loki didn't care. This was them, here, in the privacy of their lives. Their happiness.
They continued to sway for long moments, so absorbed in each other's presence that they didn't notice that the music had stopped.
**********
"Loki... you know I just feel like I'm listening to a digest of all the romcoms out there?"
"Romcom?"
"Romantic comedy.Haha I know something you don't."
Casey laughed cheerfully at Loki.
"Very funny, but do you know what karaoke is?"
"Yep... I'll remind you, since the fish thing, I've been catching up, and I'm learning every day. So what about karaoke?" Casey frowned for a moment and then exclaimed, "No! Karaoke? Who? Mobius or you? Or both?"
Loki chuckled at Casey's excitement.
"Mobius came up with the idea for the date, but I did the singing.
"Tell me about it!"
5.
"Mobius..."
Loki stood on the stage of the small bar, and pointed to his lover leaning at the bar, "Mobius, my partner, brought me here because he dreams of hearing me sing in my native language for him. No one will be able to say I don't like to satisfy my beloved." He blew a fingertip kiss to Mobius under the whistling and wolf howls of the customers. He waved to the DJ and the music started to play. He began to sing in Asgardian, the words and notes flowing naturally on his tongue.
So many people around me without a meaning or a goal
It's always someone left
Tell me, why does it always be like that
Someone from up above must have seen me
And yet thought that it's his turn,
my turn to meet someone who knows what I need
it seems like my lonely days
For its always gone
As he sang this, he began to walk towards Mobius, his eyes in his. He saw the understanding in Mobius' eyes, who, understanding perfectly all languages, grasped perfectly the meaning of the song for Loki and him.
For I have the heaven around the corner
My own angel in a bed
As if all the heavens tiny stars
Sang for me, sang for you
In a wonderful refrain
You are the heaven
around the corner for me
When he reached the end of the song, Mobius' eyes were filled with emotion.
As soon as the last note came out of his mouth, Loki hugged Mobius and kissed him, ignoring the cheers and applause of the customers.
When they separated to catch their breath, Mobius asked him, his forehead against his, in a joking tone, « Am I your own angel?"
Loki grasped his head in his hands and replied seriously, his mouth against his, "You are Mobius. You are the angel that brought me out of my darkness. You saved me from myself." Then he captured his lover's lips again, putting into the kiss all what Mobius meant to him.
**********
"Loki, I think I'll be fine, I think I've had my fill of sweets for the day, if not for the next month. If I get diabetes, you'll be responsible for it."
Loki laughed again and shrugged, "Hey! You're the one who wanted it."
"Well, at least you have a lot of work to do to be on the same level as him, because apart from the karaoke, he still made the most effort."
Loki smiled cheekily, "Hm, I think I made up for it with our one-year anniversary date, but since you don't want any more sweetness... I'll shut up."
Casey pointed his fingers at him, "Ah no Mr. God of Mischief, you're not getting away with this!"
Loki surrendered and began his last tale.
+1
This time it was Loki who had surprised Mobius by blindfolding him and leading him through a timedoor.
When they reached their destination, he slowly untied the blindfold, "You can open your eyes, love."
Mobius opened his eyes and gasped. Then he laughed softly.
Loki hugged him from behind and whispered in his ear, "Happy Anniversary my love. It was here a year ago that I started to fall in love with you."
They were in the TVA cafeteria. Alone, because Loki had made sure of that.
A table, THE table was elegantly set.
Mobius let himself be guided by Loki, who said softly, "I know it's unconventional, that we weren't a couple yet, not at all, but-"
He could not continue, Mobius had closed his mouth with a tender kiss.
Pulling back, he placed a finger on Loki's lips and replied, "Don't justify yourself.First of all, since when are we conventional?" he raised an eyebrow before continuing, "Secondly, you weren't the only one who was already feeling something at that moment sweetheart."
It was he who pulled Loki to the table.
They sat there, almost the same way they had that day, their knees touching in a familiar way. But this time the rest of their bodies were close. They shared the meal, interspersed with renewed oaths, smiles and casual conversation. Just savoring the joy of being together.
Mobius noticed, however, that the closer they got to the end of the meal, the more excited Loki seemed, almost as if he couldn't wait for the dinner to end. So much that once the last bite of dessert was swallowed, he stood up and bounced over to Mobius and held out his hand.
"Our night is not over, I have one more surprise. Can I put the blindfold back on you?"
Amused and intrigued by Loki's excitement, Mobius nodded.
Loki tied the blindfold behind his head, placed a kiss on his forehead and took his hand.
He felt them pass through a timedoor again, then suddenly felt a great warmth around him. He recognized Loki's magic that passed over him, and suddenly felt warm sand under his naked feet.
The blindfold came off and he let his eyes adjust to the light.
For the second time that evening, he gasped, and then almost cried with emotion at the sight before him.
He realized he was in a bathing suit when Loki made him put on a life jacket. Then his lover gently pushed him towards the jetski that was waiting for him at the end of the pontoon. "Go my love, go..."
He moved forward a few steps and then turned back to Loki who was looking at him with a loving smile. "And you? Don't you want to come?"
"You deserve to have your first round alone, don't worry, I'll be there."
Winking at him, Loki pointed to two lounge chairs under an umbrella.
"Go my love."
Loki went backwards to settle on the deckchair and with a cocktail in hand, he did not leave the eyes of his lover who listened to the instructions of the instructor before finally making his first ride of jet-ski.
Long minutes later, he saw Mobius coming towards him, a bright smile on his face, he whispered again, "Happy Anniversary my love."

As always, bear with me as it is not beta'd and english is not my native language I hope you enjoyed it 🥰

The fool on the hill - Chapter 5
If you prefer the Archive
Tennis
*
In Section F Owen got bold.
Sure, he had guessed Tom might be bi but coming on to another man always remained a risky venture, so Tom telling him he was bisexual became some kind of kick-off for Owen to ask Tom some raunchy questions.
And Tom – contrary to what Owen might have expected - didn't seem to mind at all.
So here they were, standing close to each other, leaning against those bookshelves of section F, their heads put together, chatting quietly, familiar, bold and uninhibited, always with grins on their faces. Both of them were having fun shocking the other with some salacious facts about their youths which occasionally lead to an outburst of laughter that they immediately tried to suppress because yes, they were still standing in a library during a film break.
Owen had the feeling they were in their twenties again and it felt fucking good.
Tom seemed eager to talk, he told Owen about his time at Eton, a boy’s college, where -according to Tom - they would be more open minded to `experiment´ with each other because there just weren’t any girls around.
And then of course drama school…
And Owen said, “Of course drama school...”
Because suddenly Owen had a very different idea about what drama school meant and what it must be like studying at a long-established drama school with its traditional theatre history at the heart of the art of acting, trying to get to the core of it all by trying everything out.
And then Tom used the word “fuck”, noted: not as a swear word and it was needless to say how much that turned Owen on.
He made an appreciative face because well, he still hadn’t thought this well-educated Eton boy would use it and it was kind of cute to see how Tom almost blushed when he realised how surprised Owen was. His eyes wandered over the bookshelves before he grinned apologetically at Owen. “I’m sorry, I guess, all the F’s around us are… inspiring.”
Owen grinned back at him. “Yeah, probably. And I don’t mind it at all.”
*
And then Owen became kinda obsessed.
As if his brain thought it now had a free ticket to think dirty thoughts about Tom.
It started with Tom’s long and elegant fingers. Because how fucking long and elegant could fingers be?
So when they were filming a scene in a corridor of the TVA and Tom had this wonderful idea of Loki adjusting Mobius’ tie even if it didn’t need any adjustment at all, and Owen felt Tom's long and elegant fingers against his neck it was one of those scenes where Owen thought that he didn’t need to act at all.
That night he had a hot dream about him and Tom, how he was sucking on these long and elegant fingers and Tom was smiling softly at him, his eyes heavy with arousal. And then Owen dreamt how Tom would wrap these long and elegant fingers around his c-
Yeah, he felt ashamed, but just a bit.
Another day Tom once again had thrown around one of his adorable metaphors, this time he said that the dialogue between Loki and Mobius would be like a tennis match.
So Owen asked Tom if they shouldn’t play tennis and he wasn’t surprised that Tom enthusiastically said "Yes, absolutely."
And it was probably then that Owen realized that everything about Tom was long.
Of course he knew Tom was taller than him but it was something different then just being taller that intrigued Owen. Again it was more the `long´ and `elegant´ that gave him those dirty thoughts.
Tom wasn’t bad at tennis, but Owen was better. He could have been even better but he was distracted. Yes, he wanted to beat Tom, that was his nature. But more than once he thought he could just stand there and watch Tom move his long and elegant body.
And hear him moan whenever he would hit the ball.
Because that moan combined with Tom's long and elegant moving body was really something else. It was fucking sexy. And it didn't matter at all that Tom was once again wearing the most unattractive sportswear ever.
So every time Tom would hit the ball, his moan vibrated through Owen’s whole body and he had to concentrate not to get a hard-on right there on the tennis court.
When they went into the showers afterwards Owen could now confirm that yes, really everything on Tom was long and elegant, but what Owen liked the most were these seemingly endless legs.
Yes, Owen had already noticed them ever since Tom wasn’t wearing this baggy prison suit anymore on set but wore his other TVA costume, that with those dress pants. But now to see those naked legs, and how they ended in this well defined … ass... and how moving those legs defined Tom’s ass even better… if Owen wasn't already horny, he would be now.
He wanted to feel them, grab them, wanted them around his waist.
“We need to do this again!” He said enthusiastically to Tom when they grabbed their bags and went out of the tennis club.
Tom laughed. “No. Not in the near future.”
Owen looked at him in surprise. “Why not?”
“I need to recover from this humiliation first.”
And that remark and the adorable look Tom gave him reminded Owen that yes, he might be obsessed with Tom’s legs, but even more with Tom himself and everything he said. And the most important thing was that he would spend as much time with him as possible.
So when one day Tom was filming at an abandoned mine outside of Atlanta, Owen decided to take a trip and accompany him.

I Thought You Didn't Like To Talk?
Loki/The West Wing FanFiction Crossover
Chapter 1 - "Loki Gets Put In Time Out"
Tumblr media
Once again Mobius found himself walking the halls of the TVA with an incessant chattering behind him, like a yappy little puppy. Oh how he missed the days when Loki pretended he didn’t like to talk. Now he was luckily if he could get him to shut up for longer than 2 minutes at a time.
One of Loki’s favorite things to talk about was of course himself, & all of his fun tricks & exciting things he’d done. Well he found them fun & exciting. The people on the receiving end of them probably felt differently.
Loki was the king of the spin though. He could take any of his exploits, no matter how much betrayal & back stabbing it involved (& sometimes it did involve literal back stabbing), & somehow tell a version where he came out as the hero or at the very least an innocent bystander.
That was the part that most drove Mobius up a wall. He was constantly reminding Loki that spinning or embellishing stories relating to their cases could create real & dangerous problems. At the very least it could create a whole mess of paperwork & interoffice annoyance for Mobius to clean up.
“Are you mad? You seem a little mad? But you’re not mad at me right? Clearly my words were just misinterpreted by that pack of imbeciles, it was an ambush .” Loki offered in an attempt to diffuse the tension between Mobius & himself. Without a hint of hesitation he followed the TVA agent into one of the time theaters.
Mobius dropped the files he had been carrying on the small round table in the middle of the room & pulled a TemPad from his jacket pocket. He had finally decided a fitting way of dealing with Loki’s lose understanding of telling the truth & reluctance to play nice with others when speaking. He had created a little “time out” spot, where Loki’s bravado could be knocked down a peg or two.
Well, Mobius didn’t really create it himself per say. He had remembered a particular Earth television program that may just have the perfect spot. That part of working at the TVA was particularly fun. Snooping though lots of popular TV programs from throughout the universe; past, present, & future. However this particular show offered a special opportunity where Loki could talk & spin as much as he wanted, not knowing the push back he would be hit with. He was about to play deputy press secretary to one of the most important men on the planet Earth. For now though that part would stay Mobius’ little secret.
“Loki do you remember what I told you would happen next time I caught you lying or ‘embellishing’ as you like to call it?”
A puzzled look appeared on the god’s face, “something about getting a taste of my own medicine, but in all honesty after that I really stopped listening”.
A mischievous smirk now adorned Mobius’ face. This was gonna be so fun to watch. He pressed one last button on the TemPad while keeping his eyes locked on Loki’s. Suddenly an orange portal door appeared out of no where. Slowly Mobius moved to Loki’s side so he could face the time door as well.
A large smile suddenly appeared on his face, & without warning he pushed Loki forward & into the portal. Looking back at Mobius Loki saw him waving & fighting back laughter. Just as the time door began to transport to a different place & maybe even a different time Loki heard Mobius yell to him, “Well I hope you enjoy your time out!”:
The door quickly compressed down & disappeared. Mobius would go get him in a few hours, after he learned a little lesson about why it’s important to think before you speak.
Once he arrived back at his desk he was a bit concerned that he found himself actually excited to get some work done. He clicked on a little screen to left corner of his desk so he could keep an eye on Loki, & settled in to his paperwork. Exhaling into the peace & quiet.
————————————
As the orange time door faded Loki found himself surrounded by darkness. He had no idea where he was, or even when he was, or what could be lurking in the dark waiting for him. Surely Mobius wouldn’t send him somewhere truly dangerous. Right?
Loki put his hands out in front of him, feeling around for any clue as to where he might be. He slowly noticed noises coming from behind him & began turning in place to find it’s source. It sounded like… people. As he had finally honed in on the spot the sound was coming from, a bright white light suddenly flooded the room & all he could her was a woman’s scream. He grabbed the closest thing to him to aid in his defense.
His eyes began to adjust to the sudden influx of light & he began to realize where he was. This was a broom closet. He was standing in a broom closet; & to top it off the ‘weapon’ he grabbed was actually a mop. He was frozen to the spot, like a deer in headlights. Eyes wide & mouth agape. Half in shock, half in embarrassment.
He now stood face to face with the woman who had been screaming. She was lanky with porcelain skin & straight blonde hair, dressed in a light grey pant suit. She had one hand grasping the doorknob to the closet & the other clasped over her mouth. She & Loki just stood there, staring at each other. Both were too stunned to speak. Neither of them moved until a man began to walk through behind the woman. His head down & hands full of papers. His brown hair slightly disheveled & the sleeves of his white button down shirt rolled up to his elbows.
"Hey Donna, can you…. Oh hey, looks like you found him.” The man had now stopped in place & grinned widely, glancing back & forth between them. Without moving or even turning his head he tilted his chin up slightly & bellowed at the top of his lungs “C.J., DONNA FOUND HIM!”
Now that the silence had been broken, Loki hastily dropped the mop that he suddenly realized he was still holding. Quickly extending a hand & offering a tight smirk to the still slightly shaken blonde woman. “Ah, so you must be Donna. I’m Loki Laufeyson.” He said, using the name the man behind her had used. Hoping it would conceal that he still had absolutely no idea what was happening. “Um, yeah, hello”, she said softly & a little tentatively back to him, offering him the hand that no longer covered her mouth. A slight smile crossing her slowly relaxing face. “I’m his assistant”, she offered while quickly tilting her head back toward the slightly rumpled energetic man behind her.
Donna quickly stepped to the side & let Loki step out of the closet. As he straightened his shirt & tie, Loki realized the man that had been standing behind Donna was now talking directly to him & had begun walking away, gesturing & clearly expecting Loki to follow him. “Hey. I’m Josh. Josh Lyman. Deputy chief of staff.  So you’re the new guy huh? I’m guessing you must have gotten turned around trying to find C.J.’s office. She had us all out looking for ya. The bullpen isn’t that big, but I’m convinced they come in here at night & move things around when we aren’t here just to mess with us. Alright here we are, the office of the one & only Miss. Claudia Jean Cregg. Press secretary extraordinaire!”
Josh, apparently that was his name, had stopped walking & had gone silent. Loki assumed surely to catch his breath from saying so much in the short walk there. He gestured to the open door before them both. With that Josh swatted Loki on the back of the shoulder with the papers he still had in his hard, only now they were rolled up. Before Loki could thank him, Josh quickly spun on his heels & started walking the other direction, & once again began shouting down the hall.
Loki still didn’t know where in the world he was, but at least now he had a few names to work with. Josh Lyman, his assistant Donna, & C.J. Cregg.
Behind the dark stained heavy wooden desk in the center of the room sat a tall confident woman with shoulder length light brown hair with soft blonde highlights in a white button down shirt & navy blazer. Her narrow glasses perched on the end of her nose She briefly lifted he eyes from the legal pad she was writing on, peering over her glasses to the dumbstruck man in her doorway. “Sit” she said bluntly, lifting her pen & using it to point to the chair opposite her desk. “& close the door behind you”.
Her eyes & pen had now returned to the pad in front of her. Loki opened his mouth to speak, but before he could even get a sound out she lifted her hand & gestured for him to wait one minute. Loki did as he was told. He’d been here maybe 15 minutes & he had already discovered he was no longer the top of the totem pole. He noticed a goldfish swimming around in a bowl on the corner of C.J.’s desk & studied it for a moment. Even the fish looked like it knew more than he did.
“&… done.” C. J. announced & added the last punctuation mark to her work with extra emphasis. She placed her pen down on top of the legal pad before interlocking her fingers & letting her hands come to rest on her desk. She lifted her head up took off her glasses & looked at Loki. Her facial features had now shifted into a friendly well practiced smile.
“Glad you finally found me, & clearly from the sounds of it you already met Josh & Donna. You’ll be seeing a lot of them. Normally getting lost in a broom closet isn’t the best way to start your first day on a new job, but you certainly made an impression. Now let’s talk about what the duties of your job as White House deputy press secretary will be.”
Loki’s eyes widened & his mouth dropped open slightly, imitating the movements of C.J.’s goldfish. As he thought to himself, oh crap.

Chapter 3
Chapter 3: Interrogation
Prologue:
Tumblr media
It was dark, a ringing in her ear forced (Name) to wake up. The light in the room blinded her as she closed her eyes as she noticed her hands were bound together with cuffs. A cough caught her attention as she opened her eyes and forced her eyes to adjust. “Glad you’re finally awake (Full Name). I must say...your record perceives you. Gone through multiple boarding schools of military orientated practices, a knowledge of multiple languages… skilled in weaponry and hand to hand combat; excels in far range sniping and close combat” spoke a man in a suit. (Name) glared at him as he sat in front of her with her file opened; photos of her when she was younger and through her young adult life. She saw a photo of her own father in the file “Father was a alchemist, and a professor of bio-engineering-” “Why not just get to the point and tell why I’m here” she snapped “Temper, temper. The plan was to obtain Loki and deal with him, however… we are looking for new recruits for the T.V.A” “...T.V.A? Like Tennessee Valley Authority? Well this seems a little odd what do they want with Loki?” (Name) snapped “No no no. As in Time Variance Authority we are an agency that monitors the realities throughout the multiverse and we attempt to keep temporal interference to a minimum” explained the man in the suit “Once again..what does this have to do with Loki? Honest the last person you want bouncing back and forth between time and space” “That is true...but he goes off on doing things in his own gain. If he wants to stay alive he will obey”
Silence in the interrogation room. The two in a stare off (Name) was unsure as to why this time police wanted Loki to work for them. Granted he is very powerful and is the only one that she knows is able to hardness any power if he puts his mind to it.
***
Loki was awake; the rage in him was boiling as he found himself worrying for the Midgardian agent. He knew it would prove to bite him in the back for she is now considered a weakness. But the anger for having been capture was just an add on “Loki of Asgard. Burden with glorious purpose. Welcome to T.V.A. We have a proposition for you that you cannot refuse” said a man in a suite, the same one that approached him before he succumbed to darkness. “I highly doubt that” Loki glared “Mmhmm. Join our organization; Time Variance Authority or T.V.A wishes to create an alliance with you to take out some disruptive individuals that wish to disrupt the balance of the multiverse time continuum” spoke the man as he sat in front of the restrained Loki “And if I refuse?” Loki asked with boredom “Death...Life imprisonment” shrugged the man in the suit. Loki was not amused and scoffed as he smirked at the man “If I do take on this proposition… I will burn this place to the ground”
The men interrogating (Name) and Loki stood up grabbing the files and looked at them “Do you accept?” A pause as Loki smirked and (Name) stayed with a stoic emotionless expression “Convince me”

(Name) was escorted to an elevator still restrained and told to keep the doors open until he got back, if she tried to escape the neck piece would shock her unconscious. She complied, not wanting to be tazed yet again. She not even five minutes had passed when she saw Loki walk in with the man she was being interrogated with. Loki gave her a look almost asking what was wrong and she just shook her head “So where exactly are you taking us somewhere to kill us?” Loki spoke nonchalantly as (Name) send him a glare “No I’m taking you both somewhere to talk” spoke the man in the suit “Well I don’t like to talk” Loki glared as (Name) scoffed “But you do like to lie. Which. You. just. Did” spoke the man as he looked to Loki “and we all know you love to talk… talkie talkie”
Loki and (Name) shared a look then to the man in slight shock “How long have you been here?” (Name) asked “Well it’s hard to say. You know time passes differently down here in the T.V.A” shrugged the man in the suit “What does that mean?” Loki asked as the man pats Loki’s back to get him out of the elevator and mentioned a hand for (Name) to follow behind.

When two people "connect" the bond between them can be so pure and simple as to stir hearts in heaven.
When they connect in all the right places at all the wrong times, heaven weeps for broken hearts. To heal these broken hearts, heaven breaks time.
—Blithe Spiritus
Loki took one last look through the rearview mirror at the cottage on the edge of the cliff, which was getting smaller and smaller as he drove away.
Shifting his gaze forward, his face slid to the crate on the passenger seat, where Croki, his pet alligator, was sitting.
"I hope you will like your new home..." Loki sighed.
Then suddenly, he braked abruptly, holding back the cage with one hand as it slid forward. Then he backed the car up.
"Shit. I'm sorry Croc'"
He walked over to the mailbox. He put his hand through the window, opened the mailbox and put an envelope inside. Then his long fingers pulled the red flag in a vertical position, to indicate that there was mail. All this under the eyes of Croki who followed with attention all his gestures.
He tapped the top of the cage, "Come on, this time we're off for good."
He rolled, speeding up, refusing to look at the sign for the tiny village his home was in, New Asgard.  Loki rolled east, the cliff behind him, then passed a sign: New York, 35 miles.
The traffic became heavier as he approached the city.
After maneuvering through the various streets and making his way through the New York traffic, he stopped in front of an apartment building on a busy street. It was a very recent building, cold and sterile. The contrast with the tranquility of New-Asgard was striking.
He parked, got out of the car and took a moment to absorb the change in his surroundings. Then with a sigh, he began to unload his things.
**********
Loki stopped at the steps in front of the entrance to the imposing establishment - September High-School. He inhaled deeply to give himself courage before moving forward, climbing the few steps and pushing open the heavy door. He entered and walked to what appeared to be the front desk where a busy looking secretary was standing.
Loki asked softly, "Excuse me?"
"Just a minute, okay?"
Loki waited a minute, politely, then tried to get the secretary's attention again.
"Ahem... Excuse me, I need to..."
She handed him a stack of paper, while saying, without looking at him, "Just fill this out and wait for me there, okay?"
Loki handed it back to her.
"No, I'm Loki Laufeyson. I'm a new teacher. I was told to report here."
The secretary looked sheepish, "Oh, I'm sorry, Professor. You need to find Principal Romanov. She should be around here. A woman with red hair, dressed in black, you can't miss her."
He did indeed find the Principal in the hallway that the secretary had pointed out.
Natasha Romanov may have looked young to be a high school principal, but everything about her demeanor, her head carriage, her attitude exuded confidence and authority. She walked quickly down the hallway and Loki, though tall, had a hard time keeping up with her.
The principal handed him a large stack of files as soon as they arrived in her office.
"You will be in charge of the sophomores, this morning you will have three classes to teach and three this afternoon."
Loki repeated to be sure, "Three?"
"That's a quiet day, for a first day."
Loki looked a little dazed, he didn't think he was going to jump into the deep end and thought he would have some time to adjust.
The principal turned around, as if she sensed his hesitation, "The teacher you replaced let us down without notice, and it took us a while to find the right replacement, the students lost a lot of time for their final exams. We have to do our best to make sure they pass."
They walked past a student who was sitting alone on a bench, looking sulky. Romanov motioned to a supervisor.
"What's he doing here?"
The supervisor replied, "He was grounded because he took apart a computer to prove Professor Banner wrong and has to do an hour of gym under Professor Odinson's supervision. However, I can't leave the place unattended, and I was waiting for my backup to take him there.
"Peter get up," said principal Romanov in a sharp tone.
The young man stood up, a sulky look on his face.
"Professor Laufeyson, take him to Professor Odinson in the gym and then you can begin your lessons in this class."
The principal pointed to the door of the classroom in question, then turned and walked back to her office, not waiting for an answer.
"Well come with me, Mister...?"
The young boy followed his lead and replied with a pouty tone, "Parker, Peter Parker. »
"Then let's go Mr. Parker, the computer dismantler." replied Loki with a wink.  He knew he couldn't condone what the young man had done, but he couldn't help but find it amusing.
Seeing that the professor didn't look reproachful as he said these words, Peter lost his pout and got a small smile.
"Although I'm curious as to what could have caused you to disassemble a computer."
Peter seemed to come back to life, explained to an amused Loki, that Professor Banner, who taught biology, had said that nothing could compare to the complex construction that was a living being and Peter had wanted to show him the opposite by dismantling the Professor's laptop.
"But I was about to put it back together though, I don't understand why he got so upset."
Loki couldn't help but laugh.
Peter's face frowned because they had arrived at the gym.
They walked through the door and there a giant blonde man came striding in, "Peter Parker, it's been so long! Tell me what you've been up to again." he ruffled Peter's hair who tried to shy away from it, then he held out his hand to Loki who had to hold back a wince at the strength of the professor's grip.
"Professor Odinson, but call me Thor. Nice to meet you. New professor?"
"Yes, I am the new literature professor, Loki Laufeyson, but call me Loki. I'll leave this promising young man to you," He winked at Peter before continuing, "as for me I'll be teaching my first class."
"Welcome here, and good luck!" threw Thor at him before turning back to Peter, "Go change, we'll start with 10 laps running around the basketball court."
Hearing Peter's grumbles, Loki smiled as he walked away.
A few minutes later, he stopped outside his classroom door and took a deep breath.
"It takes a little time to adjust, but most of the students here are exceptional and the teaching staff is really, really nice."
Loki turned to see who had just spoken.
He found himself facing a black man, taller than him, and very impressive. But despite his imposing nature, his smile and eyes were very warm as he held out his hand. "Heimdall, art professor, welcome."
Loki grasped it and replied, "Loki, literature professor."
Heimdall gave a small nod in the direction of the door, "Good luck." then walked away.
Loki, surprisingly relaxed following this little interlude, walked through the classroom door with a confident air, placed his belongings on the desk and with an engaging smile on his lips addressed his first students, "Hello, I am your new literature teacher and I hope we will work well together."
He paused, letting his gaze roam over the entire class before continuing,"O Captain! My Captain! Who knows where that came from? No one? No idea? It's-"
A young boy raised his hand at the back of the classroom.
"Yes Mister...?"
"Keener, Harley Keener."
"All right Mister Keener, I'm listening."
"It's a Walt Whitman poem about Abraham Lincoln. And it's plagiarism of Professor Keating's introduction played by Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society."
Loki didn't lose his confidence at all and replied, "Thank you Mr. Keener. I'm not going to apologize for the plagiarism. I didn't expect anyone to contradict me since this film was released long before you were all born. Thank you, Mr. Keener, for setting me straight. I won't ask you to call me Captain, Sir, or Professor, but simply Loki. Yes, Mr. Keener, Loki, as in the Norse god of mischief... "
The whole class, including Harley, laughed and Loki thought that it wasn't such a bad start.
But he still felt exhausted at the end of the day, and he slumped into the chair at his assigned desk in the teacher's lounge. He leaned in and put his head back, closing his eyes.
"So they've worn you out already?" it was the deep voice, which he recognized as Heimdall's. He opened his eyes to see that the art professor had sat just at the desk next to him.
"Yet the Famous Five keep talking about Loki, the new professor who is super cool. It's been a long time since I've heard a literature professor on such good terms." It was Thor who came to join them and pulled a chair to sit in the space between Heimdall and Loki.
"The Famous Five?"
Thor chuckled before answering, "They're called that because they're always stuffed together, probably five of the smartest minds in this elite school, and as a result always going out on the town to..."
"…the benefit of science." finished Heimdall.
"That's their argument every time they get busted," Thor clarified.
"Who are they?" asked Loki, curious.
"There's Peter who you met this morning, he's in the same class as his two childhood friends Ned and MJ. There's Harley who talked about how you put him in his place, when he thought he had fooled you. Captain my Captain huh?"
Thor chuckled before continuing, "and finally Kamala Khan, the newest one, a little brunette, a ball of energy who always wears a big red scarf, summer and winter and who the other four have taken under their wing."
"Interesting..." replied Loki, thoughtfully.
"Wait until you're the target of their prank and we'll see if you find these kids interesting." said an unknown voice behind him.
"Bruce my friend! Were you able to fix your laptop?" exclaimed Thor with a laugh.
Loki turned around, only to find himself standing in front of a man who was a little older than him. He stood up and held out his hand, "Professor Banner, I presume."
"Am I that famous?" the man asked, raising an eyebrow as he shook the outstretched hand in a firm grip.
"It's mostly that I had the pleasure of taking Peter Parker for his grounding to Thor." replied Loki
"That brat..." harrumphed Bruce. "He's smart... but his habit of proving he's always right..."
The other men laughed in unison.
"So boys? Are we having fun?" a young woman with short blond hair stepped forward and held out her hand, "Carol Danvers, homeroom teacher at this crazy school."
"Nice to meet you," Loki replied, shaking the outstretched hand.
Unaccustomed to being around so many people and especially such friendly people, Loki felt a little overwhelmed and suddenly the fatigue of this first day seemed to fall on his shoulders to the point that he had to stifle a yawn.
Thor patted him on the back and said, "I have an excellent remedy for that."
"What is it?"
Heimdall and Thor high-fived each other and said in unison, "The Bifrost."
At Loki's look of complete incomprehension, Carol explained, "It's a bar two blocks away, good burgers, good beer and for good company, that's us." she finished with a wink.
Loki realized they were inviting him to come with them but he hesitated and finally replied, "Thanks. I better not drink tonight. I'm dead."
Bruce retorted, "We're all dead."
"Yes, but I still have a lot to unpack."
They nodded, and did not seem disappointed by his refusal, even rather understanding. Loki really wasn't used to this kind of company.
Heimdall put his hand on his arm and then said softly, "Next time, then."
Loki, not understanding why his throat was tight, simply nodded.
A little later, they separated in front of the school gates. Loki on one side and the group on the other.
" Bye Loki!"
"See you tomorrow Captain!"
Loki lived only three blocks from the school and soon arrived home. When he entered he realized how sterile and cold his large apartment seemed.
He had not yet had time to unpack all his things and the boxes were scattered everywhere. The first thing he had unpacked was Croki's terrarium, which took up a whole room.
As he closed the door, he heard Croki's typical little paws coming and rubbing against him as usual. He patted his head and headed for the kitchen. Croki was a Cuvier's Dwarf caiman. Loki had once wanted to get a dog, but in the animal shelter he had immediately felt a connection with the animal, perhaps because he was different, like himself.
Loki opened the refrigerator which was desperately empty except for Croki's fish ration. He put it on a plate and put it on the floor while commenting, "Need alligator food. And human too."
He was going to have to do some shopping tomorrow.
After snacking on a bag of chips, exhausted, he took a quick shower before going to his room.
"Good night Croki."
His room was as functional and depressing as the rest of the place. He went to stand in front of the window. Outside it was all stone buildings. It was very difficult to even see the sky. He sighed, "What a view..."
He pulled the blinds and went to bed. Once his head was on the pillow, he fell asleep very quickly, which prevented him from thinking too much about everything he missed.
**********
A red pickup truck passed the New Asgard sign before parking at the side of the path that leads to the house. Its back end was filled with furniture and moving boxes. A mustachioed man with gray hair got out. He walked toward the cottage on the edge of the cliff and stopped, hands on hips, contemplating the view.
He opened the door, looked for the electric power meter. He turned it on and went to turn on the light in the entrance and then in what seemed to be the living room.
Mobius examined the place, satisfied. There wasn't much. A stereo, some books, an armchair. But the bare and cosy furniture matched perfectly with the austere beauty of the small cottage. He looked out the window at the cliff. He was going to like it here.
It took him a good four hours to unload his pickup truck by himself and install just about everything he had brought. Once finished, he grabbed a cold beer that he had put in the cooler and while drinking it quietly walked around the house before getting in the car to go shopping at the local grocery store that he had spotted on his way in.
Once he had gone around the store, with his groceries in his arms, he went to put them on the counter.
The young owner and his wife were behind.
"Hi, are you new around here?" the owner asked him.
Mobius smiled and replied, "More or less. My name is Mobius."
The owner replied, "My name is Clint and this is my wife, Laura."
Laura smiled and added, "You're going to like it. Especially now that the weather is getting warmer." Then pointing to the groceries, she added, "We'll get you some boxes for all that."
"Oh thanks." replied Mobius.
Laura fetched an empty box from a high shelf. Now that she was no longer hidden by the counter, it was obvious that she was pregnant. Clint rushed to her. "No, honey, let me."
Mobius looked at them, feeling moved and at the same time fully aware of his own loneliness. He paid, took his box and left, but not without promising the young couple to return.
He parked in front of the small road with his groceries in the back of the truck and noticed the mailbox with its flag up. He stopped and opened it. There was an envelope.
For the new tenant.
He took in the groceries, put them away, made himself a sandwich tray and taking the letter, he went to sit on the armchair in front of the bay window. He put his tray on a small table next to it, opened the letter and started to read.
Dear new tenant.
Hello and welcome to your new home and congratulations, blah blah blah. You have made an excellent choice, New Asgard is a wonderful place and this house is a gem, as you may have already noticed.
I'm sure you'll love living here as much as I do.
By the way, I'm the former tenant, Loki.
Mobius looked perplexed but also pleasantly surprised.
The post office forwards my mail normally, but if something should happen here, because the post service is what it is and we are never safe, my new address is below. Thank you.
Mobius turned over the letter.
P.S.: Sorry for the pawprints leading to the front door. They were already there when I moved in, as well as the box in the attic. I think it belongs to the owner.
Mobius stared at the letter in amusement and could not help but check the end of the letter.
He went to the front door. The floor was clean. Inside and out.
"What did he talk about?" he scratched the back of his head before heading for the ladder that led to the attic. He opened the hatch, poked his head through and looked around. It was empty. No box.
Mobius went back down, shrugged, crumpled the letter and threw it away.
He finished his meal and went to bed.
The next day, in his clock store, while repairing an antique watch with an extremely complicated mechanism, he couldn't help thinking about the letter and its more or less strange ending when he was interrupted by the doorbell indicating that someone had entered the store.
He put down his tools, wiped his hands, and headed for the store.
"Hey Mobius! I made lunch, shall we share?"
It was the bubbly and somewhat invasive, Sylvie. The owner of the antique gun store right across from him.
He replied, annoyed, because she had interrupted his work that he loved, "I can't, I have urgent work to finish."
"Oh come on Mobius, there's nothing urgent about an old watch."
"It is to its owner."
She made a disappointed pout, "Well, okay..." she sighed and headed for the door, then turned abruptly. "Is it true you bought a house? Where is it? How is it?"
Mobius rolled his eyes, used to Sylvie's chatter.
"It's an isolated cottage, in a small village called New Asgard."
"You're sick to isolate yourself like that!"
"It's what I want and I already feel at home there. And now, if you don't mind, I'm going to get back to my work, which is not urgent." He walked briskly toward his studio, annoyed by the criticism of his choice, and didn't even hear the door close.
In the late afternoon, after his day's work, he decided to repaint the faded fences that lined the small path. The manual work, like his work on watches, helped him to clear his head.
A few hours later, as the day was getting darker, Mobius was kneeling on the steps and applying a new layer of paint to the weathered planks. He finished, satisfied with the result, and began to put his equipment away.
Behind him, a small dwarf alligator trotted along the path. Mobius didn't notice it at first. The alligator sped up and before Mobius could react, he stepped into the paint and left footprints behind him. "Hey!"
Mobius tried to catch the alligator but it ran back inside the house whose door Mobius had left ajar. Mobius was about to follow him, wondering what an alligator was doing here and if he was dangerous, when he suddenly stopped.
On the ground in front of the house, there was a trail of paw prints.
Mobius rushed to the garbage can and searched with determination through his trash when he finally found what he was looking for: Loki's letter.
He stared at it.
Sorry about the footprints leading to the front door. They were already there when I moved in, as was the box in the attic. I think it belongs to the owner.
He remained for a long moment staring at the crumpled note.
*********
Loki went out to have lunch at a place he had spotted not far from the school.
Finding the weather warm, he opened his coat and continued walking.
When he arrived at the place, he sat down on a bench and started to unwrap his sandwich, a book in his hand. He enjoyed this moment of calm, even if the place was crowded on this beautiful day.
Once finished eating, Loki closed his eyes for a moment, letting the sunlight warm him up. Just aware of the surrounding sounds, the water of the fountain, the splashes and laughter of the children playing there, an old man grumbling about global warming, the pigeons landing not far away, hoping to get some crumbs from those who like Loki had decided to have lunch here.
Suddenly, a horrible noise, a high-pitched squeal and a horn made Loki sit up. He suddenly opened his eyes and looked around.
A few meters away, in front of Loki, a double-decker city bus was trying to stop. It was going pretty fast, although you could tell the driver was trying to brake.
Loki registered it all, the noise, the bus, before noticing the gray-haired man standing directly in the path of the bus. There was nothing to be done, it was inevitable and almost immediate, the man was hit by the bus, and Loki, horrified, saw his distant figure fly ten or fifteen feet into the air before crashing to the sidewalk. The faint sound of the impact reached Loki half a second later, due to the distance.
Loki automatically took out his cell phone and dialed 911. As he walked towards the impact point, he gave all the information to the rescue workers, trying to remain calm.
Once he hung up the phone, he started to run towards the lifeless body.

2021 - Loki's apartment
Loki steadied himself with a pounding heart and picked up, "Hello?"
-Loki?
-Yes?
-It's Sigyn.
It took Loki a moment to realize who it was and let the slight disappointment fade away.
-Sigyn?
-Yes, I'm in New York. I came for a conference but it got canceled, so I figured I'd call you. To see if you were free.
An hour later, Loki and Sigyn were walking around in awkward silence. Loki hadn't wanted Sigyn to get any ideas, so he'd preferred to meet her on neutral ground.
"Thanks for coming."
"Sure, no problem." replied Loki.
"It's been too long."
Loki didn't answer, he didn't want to start a sensitive discussion. Actually, he didn't want to be here at all.
"How is Croki?" continued Sigyn.
"He's fine."
"Is he adjusting to life in the city?"
"Yeah, he's doing well."
"Good. I miss him."
Here we go... get out your handkerchief...
Exactly the kind of discussion Loki didn't want to start. Again he preferred not to point out, and again let the awkward silence settle.
"Have you eaten, by any chance?" asked Sigyn.
"No, but..."
"Me neither." replied Sigyn, not even letting Loki speak. "I just realized I'm starving. Maybe we can get a quick bite somewhere."
Loki reluctantly nodded. They passed a small, elegant restaurant, "Freya's restaurant".
"What do you think of this? It looks good." raved Sigyn.
Loki protested, "Oh, no, Sigyn, this place is way too...".
But Sigyn was already heading inside and Loki had no choice but to follow her. The place was small, elegant and serene. And it was completely crowded. Sigyn approached the hostess.
"Good evening, table for two, please."
The hostess looked taken aback and asked her, "For tonight?"
"Yes, please."
The young woman replied with an apologetic tone, "I'm sorry, Miss. We are completely booked for tonight."
She looked at the reservation book before continuing, "But in three... no, I'm sorry, four months from now we have an opening for dinner if you want to make a reservation. Five-thirty or eleven-thirty?"
Sygin, turned on her heel, clearly disappointed and Loki followed her.
A little later, they were eating in a pizzeria on the corner.
Seeing Sigyn's dejected look, Loki took pity on her and said gently, "Don't feel bad. This is one of the best restaurants in town. It's okay that there's no table, that's what I was going to tell you."
Sigyn sighed, "It's not that..." she paused and then resumed, "I didn't do it right."
Loki realized she had lied to him, "You didn't have a conference, did you?"
She shook her head and Loki waited for her to continue.
"I thought you'd see me if it didn't seem like a big deal, a surprise, a quick coffee... But coffee could turn into dinner. And dinner could turn into..."
"What?" asked Loki dryly.
" Anything." replied Sigyn sheepishly.
"So it was an ambush."
"Yes..." sighed Sigyn again.
Loki exasperated, said, " Another one."
Sigyn, on the defensive, asked him, "What do you mean?"
Loki replied wearily, "Sigyn. You were always jumping ten steps ahead. A week after we met, you were already planning our entire lives. When I was still in college, you were picking out real estate. I'd come visit you for the weekend and you'd invited all your high school friends, the whole town to your house to meet me."
Sigyn replied defiantly, "At least I didn't go out with anyone else."
Loki surprised her by asking, "What do you mean?"
"At the party..."
"Oh my God Sigyn. I didn't go out with him! I kissed him once, and he was just a random guy and it was years ago.... I can't believe you remember that."
"Okay. You're right. I don't want to fight. It's just... part of me wonders... if I had moved to New York when you wanted me to..."
Loki replied firmly, "You didn't and leaving was the hardest decision I've ever made. I hope you know that. But that's water under the bridge and it's time to move on."
Sigyn looked disappointed but nodded, "I'm sorry. I never should have called. I just... miss you."
Loki didn't answer. He didn't want to, because if he was honest he would have to tell her that he didn't miss her anymore.
He couldn't stop his thoughts from slipping to his mysterious pen pal and the connection he had with him.
They finished their meal in a heavy silence. Loki was eager to get back to his apartment.
2019 - In front of the TK building
Mobius got out of his pickup, let out a big sigh and entered the imposing building.
When he reached the third floor, he knocked on the door.
The familiar voice answered, "Come in."
Mobius paused in the doorway, waiting for Ravonna to look up.
"What a surprise, the prodigal son has returned," the woman said by way of greeting.
"I was in the neighborhood..." he paused, uncomfortable, then continued, "How are you?"
"I'm fine." replied Ravonna who said nothing more.
Mobius entered the room with an uncertain step.
"Why don't you get to the point, Mobius."
Mobius stepped forward and placed an envelope on Ravonna's desk.
Ravonna took it and pulled out a check.
"What's this?"
Mobius replied calmly, "It's what I owe you."
Ravonna looked puzzled, "I beg your pardon?"
"It's about the same amount of money I would have made for TK if I had stayed on for the duration of my contract. So there you go, we're even."
"So you wasted your money," Ravonna replied, "You didn't owe me anything."
Mobius replied firmly, "I feel better. We were both in on this project originally and I feel like I let you down, so we've come full circle."
"If it makes you feel better. Good for you. Is that all?"
"I bought the house on the cliff."
"I heard about it. Finally, despite your high principles, it seems you don't mind making money right?"
Ravonna looked briefly at the check and pocketed it.
Mobius, annoyed by her coldness and what she had just said, said, "You know it's not the same thing... but you know what? Let's just forget it, we'll never agree. Everything is perfect the way it is! Have a nice life!"
Mobius stared at her for a moment. Then he stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Ravonna jumped at the sound of the door slamming and pulled out the check again. She looked at it, then slowly tore it in half and threw it in the wastepaper basket. Then she opened a desk drawer and took out a photograph.
It was a picture of the House on the Cliff under construction. Ravonna and Mobius looked about 7 or 8 years old and were holding hands.  Mobius was pointing at the house and smiling. She remembered that day, the orphanage had taken them on a field trip to the New Asgard forest and as usual, Mobius and Ravonna had slipped away and stumbled upon the house under construction.
At the time the picture was taken, Mobius was telling her that one day he would move back here. This is where they had decided that they would work together one day, that they would make plenty of money to come back and live in this house. Stupid childhood dream. An utopia.
Ravonna looked at the picture for a moment, started to throw it in the wastebasket, then decided not to and put it back in the drawer.
An Autumn Afternoon - 2019
Mobius had taken Croki to the veterinarian for a regular check-up and had taken the opportunity to pass by Sylvie's store, to see if she had any old daggers. Maybe he would find something to send to Loki. Although offering a blade seemed a little weird for him. But after all, their relationship itself was weird.
They were going through some daggers that Sylvie had selected, the young woman a little too close for his liking.
He had well noticed that she often tried to attract his attention, but Mobius was not interested at all. He just didn't know how to tell her without hurting her feelings.
"Mobius..."
"Yes Sylvie."
"You told me you were here with Croki, your alligator, didn't you?"
"Uh yes, he's in his crate, in the trailer of the pickup."
"So that can't be him I just saw running past the store then?"
"What?" Mobius ran over and said as he drove away, "How many people do you think are driving around with an alligator in their car?!"
He looked to the right and then to the left, and saw Croki disappear around the corner.
"Croki!"
Mobius shouted but the alligator didn't stop, Mobius ran after him, vaguely aware that he was being followed by Sylvie.
He chased Croki into a nearby residential street. Croki was really fast. Mobius swore and speeded up his pace.
Croki snuck through someone's garden and Mobius was still chasing him. They arrived at a house where Croki seemed to have stopped. Finally.
In front of it, a woman was unloading the trunk of her car and was watching Croki with a slightly frightened eye. Mobius managed to walk up and grab Croki.
"There you are, you rascal. What's gotten into you?" Then turning to the woman who looked familiar but whom he didn't think he knew, he added, "I'm sorry, this is the first time he's run away like this. He's never done this before. But he's harmless, don't worry."
The woman asked him with a curious look, "What's his name?"
"Croki."
She walked over and bent down to Croki, "Hi, Croki. I should get one like you for my boyfriend. He loves animals and especially anything reptilian."
Mobius noticed how much the young woman had to unload, there were many cases of wine and offered, "Do you want help with that? To apologize for the inconvenience caused by Croki."
She shook her head, "Oh no, I have time. Besides, you're already loaded" she replied, pointing to Croki in Mobius' arms before continuing, "in case you're wondering, I don't intend to drink all this alone."
The young woman is very talkative and Mobius listens politely.
"I'm a real estate agent, and you, do you live around here?"
"I have a house on the cliff above the lake in New Asgard."
"Really?"
They were joined by Sylvie, out of breath.
"Thank God! You've found him!"
The young woman greeted Sylvie with a nod.
"Hi, I'm Sigyn."
Then she continued, turning to Mobius, "Concerning the wine cases, I'm having some high school friends and neighbors over tonight. You're both welcome to come if you feel like it. It's always nice to have new faces."
Mobius and Sylvie exchanged a look.
Sylvie replied, "Thanks. We have plans."
Mobius wondered what plan they were supposed to have, and what was sure was that he had only one plan, to go home, see if Loki had written to him and write to him. Alone.
Sigyn shrugged and replied, "No problem. It was nice to meet you anyway. See you later maybe, Croki. Oh, hey, Mobius..."
Sigyn reached into her pocket. "Here's my business card, I could look into renting a place on the lake myself. If you hear of anything, let me know."
"Will do."
"Thank you. That would be very helpful. I love this house, but my boyfriend doesn't. You know how it is."
"No worries." replied Mobius starting to leave, he inwardly ranted, wondering how he managed to stumble upon the chattiest women on earth, when Sigyn added, "I promised him a view of the lake if he moved in with me after art college."
Mobius paused.
"He's in art college?"
"Yes in Brooklyn, he wants to be a professor of literature and is majoring in Norse mythology. He visits here on weekends."
Mobius froze and realized that Sigyn was the one he had seen with Loki on the station platform and that Loki had kissed.
Sigyn continued, not noticing Mobius's confusion, "He's coming tonight, a little later, actually. That's why I'm having this little party."
Under Sylvie's exasperated gaze, Mobius inquired, "What time does it start?"
The same evening - 2021
Loki went out after work, tired, and started to head home. When suddenly he changed his mind and stopped to turn around. After a few detours, he found himself where he wanted to go, "THE BIFROST", the bar where the other professors had wanted to take him on his first day.
The place was almost empty. Loki went to the bar and sat down, looking gloomy and ordered a glass of white wine.
At the same time - 2019
When Mobius and Sylvia arrived at Sigyn's house, the party was already well advanced inside and there were many cars parked in the driveway and on the street.
As they entered, Sylvia turned to Mobius with a pouty face, "This better be good. I had something else planned for us."
Mobius rolled his eyes, because he had never intended to spend the evening with her in the first place anyway.
In the hallway, Sigyn was among her friends and neighbors, talking and laughing.
She came over to Mobius and Sylvie as soon as she saw them, "Hey! Glad you could make it. The bar..." she emphasized the word with quotes in the air, "is in the kitchen..."
They moved around greeting people here and there, Mobius looking for Loki with his eyes, Sylvie then gave him a look and asked in an acid tone, "Why are we here?".
Mobius pretended not to have heard her, the noisy discussions around them giving him a good excuse.
They ended up sitting on the couch next to a couple in their thirties. They exchanged greetings and chatted, Mobius half-listening, wondering again where Loki was.
Same time - 2021
When Loki was halfway through his drink, someone came and sat next to him. Surprised, he saw that it was Thor who ordered a drink before turning to him and saying with the smile that was his, "According to most social norms, a person shouldn't drink alone after 10 p.m. unless they have a good excuse. What's yours?"
Loki shrugged.
"I don't have one."
"I do. My fiancée just left for six months for her research. She's an astrophysicist, and we won't be able to see each other for that long."
"Tough." replied Loki, "And your relationship will put up with that?"
"Of course!" replied Thor, "It's not the first time, and luckily there's facetime and stuff." He pointed to Loki's glass before adding, "I see your glass is empty, do you want another one? My treat."
Loki nodded, "Yeah."
Thor ordered and two minutes later their drinks arrived.
After a moment of silence, Loki said quietly, "Actually, I have an excuse to drink alone after 10pm."
Same time - 2019
Mobius and Sylvie were still on the couch with the thirty-something couple. Mobius was honestly getting bored and apparently so was Sylvie, because she turned slightly to Mobius and whispered from the corner of her mouth, "Go get our coats."
Mobius stood up and excused himself, before going in search of the coats.
Just as he was about to reach the coat racks, he saw Sigyn, who was looking out the window, suddenly turning around and saying rather loudly, "Okay, everyone!  It's time!"
She switched off all the lights in the room and everyone fell silent.
Mobius saw a figure appear behind the glass door. The door slowly opened and he heard Loki's voice for the first time, "Hello?"
Sigyn abruptly turned on the lights and everyone started shouting "Surprise!" and "Happy Birthday!"
Someone brought in a cake with lit candles on it.
Loki looked stunned as Sigyn threw herself into his arms and kissed him full on the lips while Mobius could do nothing but watch.
