So today I got a rather unkind comment on AO3 (one could call it hate), but I believe it to be a bot for several reasons:

Guest account, but username attached

Said username exists but person is unlikely to be reading Tolkien fic (according to their Tumblr and AO3, they are in other fandoms)

Two grammatically correct sentences

Super generic text that could apply to any fic:

"I've seen better fanfiction written by a toddler. Get it together!"

I'm curious, did anyone else get comments like this? Let me know.

And to those who have gotten rude comments and are now worried/upset: Maybe it was just a bot too. Either way: You're awesome for putting your writing out there for others to enjoy and you don't deserve to get rude comments for it. I hate beards and I want to tell you to shave yours but maybe some nice Big Person will pick you up, put you on a table, and forcibly shave you. Maybe get a friend to stop you from wiggling around.

As a general rule of thumb I don't reply to hate comments (i figure just because some fools want to waste their time doesn't mean i gotta) but I get a particularly large number of hate comments on my beard so I figured I'd address it.

Believe it or not, I am afab transgender! So it was hormone therapy that blessed me with the beard that I have, which is often called "pube-y" and ugly by cis men on the internet.

But in the trans world, mine is quite impressive and glorious! And I love it tremendously ^^ It may not be as thick and bushy as that of a cis man, but I haven't exactly made it my mission to be like them. I set out to wear dressed with a beard on my face, and I've suceeded in my gender goals ^^ So know that any further negative comments on my appearance will be deleted and reported, and have an excellent day!

how to improve your hate comments

I get a lot of hate comments, but few of them are actually innovative or hurtful. I'm gonna tell you how to improve on them so you can make your next hate comments more creative and actually get under my skin instead of making me chuckle

TW: suicide, homophobia, threats of violence

first, we have the classic. i have received dozens of comments telling me to kill myself. I would advise you to not write something like that, because it literally does nothing to me and is kinda boring. you could improve your hate comment by wording it a bit more interestingly, something like "nobody would miss you if you killed yourself" so I would actually read it

then, we have the homophobic / misogynist slur comment. It reads kinda desperate for a reaction, especially when you have sent me like 10 asks already (like this person did). it's also lame because I am a woman, so why would calling me a faggot hurt me? it just makes you look homophobic. if I were you, I would just write the hate comment without the slurs, because if you accuse me of being a transphobe and then use all of these slurs kinda refutes your own argument

the threat of violence comment, I have already had this a couple of times. it's not that bad in the sense that it is not boring, but from a trans activist perspective it's not smart to write comments like this because it proves our point that you're just some weird ass violent creeps.

4/10 because you're committed, but not more because of bad optics for your own movement

and there we have someone trying to make me feel bad. this person does not know much about the relationship I have with my parents, so from their perspective it is a guess: if i had a bad relationship with my parents, if would have hurt me, but unfortunately for them my parents already love me so it doesn't do anything. but keep trying! at some point you'll probably find something that I really feel bad about :) I believe in you!

Random thought:

As a writer and a reader, people really need to stop leaving hate comments under a writer's/ Artist's work, that's just fucked up!!

You don't understand how effort and time it takes for a writer/ artist to get work done.

Tumblr is supposed to be a safe place and comfort zone, free of hate. Now there's a huge difference between hate and criticism.

Stop the hate comments and dms please!! if you don't like something simply skip it, hate is completely unnecessary and it won't get you anywhere but it would bring you hate in return. Haters simply reap what they sow.

The writers / artists choose their own content, it makes them happy to share it with others, to bring an idea to life, it doesn't only comfort the audience but also the writer / artist themselves.

We're all dealing with real life and not all of us have perfect and happy lives so writing / drawing/ editing etc is what comforts us, it's an escape, and our escape should be a happy place where all of us exist in harmony.

Some artists don't really care about those comments and they simply block or report which is the right thing to do but some get really sad and depressed about it, so please don't turn anyone comfort into a reason for them to be sad just because you chose to be mean and leave a mean comment under their posts.

Skip or block a blog if you don't like it and doesn't want to see that specific content, but never insult anyone and never try to bring them down, it's just a childish and shitty thing to do.

To all the haters out there stop the hate please !

To my fellow writers and artists keep on doing what you love!!! Don't let anyone brings you down!! You are amazing and you content is unique. Keep doing what comforts you, all of you are amazing and thank y'all for your amazing work 🤍

i just got a hate comment on my fic (in which i deleted) but let me give you the exact comment:

“This shit is absolute ass. I don’t know why you would write this, or why you thought it would be good to post this. All the kudos and comments on this shitty fic is lying to you. Do everyone a favor and delete your works, and fucking delete yourself from the earth”

Okay, let’s talk about all the things wrong with this.

1. my writing, contrary to popular belief, is not for everyone else. it’s something i do because i like to write, and if i get to share it with some of you all, it’s a huge plus. but it is NOT for you all to criticize.

2. telling me that people are lying to me is not only offensive to me, but it is also offensive to the people who commented and kudoed. You are calling them liars. I will not tolerate hate on those who enjoy my works. I will not tolerate hate on those who have never read my works, yet are still kind human beings. Knock it off.

3. Telling me to kill myself is NEVER appropriate. Especially since i am a minor, though you should never say it to anyone ever. If you hate my fics and you comment this stuff on mine but nobody else’s, you do that. Id rather it be me than someone who thinks worse about things like this.

Leaving hate comments is never, ever okay. Authors and artists in the marauders fandom, do not let these affect you. It will never be good. The art that these beautiful people create is not for you to criticize. Telling someone to end themselves because of something they created is and will never be okay. (To anyone who has gotten recent hate comments and needs to talk to someone about it, My Dms are always open)

GUYS! I had gotten my first Frans-hate comment a couple days ago!!

They literally just commented “🚩”

I mean, sure, we could’ve been besties in another time, another life, maybe another universe. But if I’m not your type of people then good for you, set your boundaries as one should (even tho they were the ones to engage) ✊😤

But don’t be a coward and delete it, just cuz I didn’t initially engage angrily or annoyed 💀…Of course, I still wouldn’t have said anything cuz it’s internet and as long as my private information is protected, we good 👌

And if it was just reported and it got deleted, then that’s fine, no one likes to see mean things on their favorite interests/hobbies. But I’ll honestly like to keep them up cuz I’m happy with my life 😄. Maybe they might grow up and realize that foolishness of this all in the future and deleted it themselves. However for the meantime, I’ll wear them like a badge of honor 🫡🏅

So to my frans shippers, keep up the good fight and let not this hate take away your determination ❤️✨

And I don’t know if this might just be Catholic/Christian in me, but to my first Frans-hater, I’m honored to have been chosen and know that I’m open to be friends. While we can’t talk about our Undertale ships, but I’m sure we find common ground in other things. I hope that you find peace and enjoy your fandom in whatever way to like it.

Keep going - no, really. I am fat. I'm happy to share some backstory!

I have had ongoing issues with BED (Binge Eating Disorder), which I take medication for, and it's been helping! Plus, the antidepressants I've been on for the past eight years also contribute to weight gain. It's taken me a lot of work to feel good about who I am and the skin I am in, and I'm not ashamed of being fat. I am fat. You're right! Well done!

Not sure about the whole 'treating people badly' thing, though. I treat people the way they deserve, as @exitpursuedbyavulcan has said to me. The only people who might feel that I've treated them badly fit into one or more of the following categories:

They've been outed as toxic shitheads (spreading rumours about me, publicly dragging me with no prompting, hate-anoning me and just generally been gross to a whole bunch of users);

They've plagiarised me (or others);

They've been blocked (which is my right);

They've been kicked from the Discord I help run for breaking server rules or being a general shithead.

I've never said I was cool, but thanks for the compliment, nonnie! And thank you for illustrating so wonderfully that the above-mentioned list of people (which you are no doubt one of, and I have my suspicions as to which exact one you are) ARE in fact toxic, fatphobic, gross little shitheads. Love ya!

in all seriousness, i really do mean what i said to this person. some people really never learned the kindergarten lesson of if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything! normally i would just delete it and move on, but i just wanted to use this to call attention to how we as writers can take criticism that is just made for the sake of being hurtful and realize that it isn't really a reflection of us, but rather, a reflection of someone who just wants to spread negativity for no reason other than personal entertainment.

since i got back into writing, i have had so many people treat me with so much kindness & love and support!! (people like my lovely mutuals @aminahwritesstuff7531, @dukeofdelirium, and @coconutsaiyan, to name a few:)) so i'm choosing to not let this comment overshadow all of the kindness & positivity i've received from my talented/ kind mutuals & followers & the fic community as a whole.

i really do hope that all of these miserable people who can only manage to write uncreative, mindless comments do genuinely grow past this stage of their lives, go outside, and touch some grass.

it's a title of a fan-fiction about a kids cartoon. it was never that serious. please, go outside and take a look at the person you've become.

i really hope you grow into a person driven by kindness who can look at themselves in the mirror and feel genuinely proud.
