Books to Read: My Three Favorites
The year has started on a good note. I read twenty books in total, five of which are novellas. And among these are three books I know will stay with me for a long time. I love reading, that’s no secret. For me, reading fiction is very much like breathing, with no exaggeration. Yet, most of the time I read and I forget. The characters blur into one another, and stories merge together, making it…

Overview:
The path to Heaven runs through miles of icy Hell …
James Crowley has ridden the road to Crescent City before, but never with companions like these. Never with a woman whose very presence jeopardizes everything he’s fought for over the past two decades.
The swamps are a brutal, nasty place filled with creatures most people think only exist in nightmares and fever dreams. When Crowley, along with Rosa, Bram Stoker, Harker, and Irish stumble upon such a creature, and one of their party finds themselves mortally wounded, they must find help in the most unlikely of places.
But that wasn’t James Crowley’s mission. As a Black Badge, a Hand of God, he’s been tasked with hunting down the worst Hell has to offer, and at Shargrafein’s beckoning, he must suss out the Betrayer—a mysterious being about whom no information is given.
What he finds is something he never could have guessed. The city is overrun with vampires, werewolves, and worse, including an old acquaintance with nothing good in mind.
Meanwhile, Rosa has continued her pursuit to reconnect with her dead husband, Willy Massey. With the help of a Voodoo Queen, she must do the unthinkable. Only Crowley stands between her and a choice that would forever scar her soul. But will he be able to escape the clutches of Hell in order to keep her from destroying everything and everyone in her path?
With the question of right and wrong always nagging at Crowley’s undead heart, he must decide where his loyalties lie in this pulse-pounding sequel to the hit Cold as Hell. The Witcher meets The Dresden Files in this weird Western series by the Audible number one bestselling duo behind Dead Acre.

Allow Me To Introduce A Few Of My Other WIPS
Tumblr media
I'm not doing a full blog rebrand, ok guys..?
I've just updated my blog colors/pfp + header/switched up the aesthetic a bit.
It’s mostly because I’m dying to embrace and share the part of myself and my new WIPs that got me out of my quite chronic writer’s block, which had lasted for much too long.
I've kept my usual writerblr intro, added a few more things about me, and below are the details on a few WIPs I'd like to share! It’s experimental for me because this is my first venture outside the typical fantasy genre but writing something different has been so healing.
Tumblr media
WIPS
Bear with me guys, these are super experimental and not very developed, but take a look and see if anything piques your interest:
Us, Right Now
Tumblr media
"Sometimes you don't realize you've lost someone until they've faded before your very eyes." An intimate account of two lovers' quiet descent into turmoil. A recollection of losing a lover.
Focuses more on little details and emotion rather than plot, because I wanted to explore/process the feelings and mindsets one can adopt when they're losing someone, or once they've lost them and have just now realized it.
Tumblr media
Lotion
Tumblr media
"I can't stop thinking about the way you held me last night."
"What? When did I...?"
The story centers around protagonist Mai, who dreams in crystal-clear color, every detail immaculate--which causes her to mistake her sleeping fantasies as events that have actually occurred in the waking world. Needless to say, chaos ensues.
I'm aiming for this one to be a tad more lighthearted compared to these other two, and to explore what happens when fantasy and reality are no longer distinguishable from one another.
Tumblr media
Frogs
Tumblr media
A vibrant exploration of youth, adolescence, and the transition to adulthood. So far what I've written hasn't let me in on what the main plot is, but this story contains themes of growing up, losing friends, becoming outcast. The title references one of my favorite quotes, the Japanese proverb "A frog in a well knows nothing of the sea."
Tumblr media
And, as always, there's the Hera trilogy, my love letter to the fantasy and science fiction stories that raised me. It's releasing very very soon, in early 2023, so be sure to stay tuned and check out the Hera tags on my blog: #hera: to catch a star and #hera trilogy to see more!
Thanks for reading this far if you did, I'm feeling good about announcing these WIPs. Have some tea and cake... 🍰 ☕

The Last List of Mabel Beaumont
Laura Pearson released on August 4, 2023
---
I downloaded this book on my Kindle a while ago and completely forgot what it was about when I chose to read it.
I initially thought it was going to a cute story about how a widow was going to learn through her newfound friendships that she actually loved her late husband more than she thought she did. I thought it was going to be a cute story about the widow, who initially was more of an introverted homebody, would learn to love life and the mistakes that come with it as she inserts herself into her friends' personal lives. I thought there was going to a moment of overcoming homophobia to care for a child who deserved a family.
I was wrong in some ways.
It turned out to be the story of a widow who acknowledged that she loved her late husband -- that there are different kinds of love -- and that life can be built around it. It turned out to be the story of a widow who learned to accept herself and learned to love life again from her newfound friends. She learned that being around people and doing things weren't a bad thing, even in old age. She learned that it brought her closer to her true self that she knew when she was in her early 20s.
And what I find the most fascinating is that even though she was 86 and just then accepting herself wholly, she had no regrets. That's what I think is super important to note.
As much as I loved reading this to learn about Mabel's journey through life, I enjoyed learning about her friends as well. I didn't pick up where the story was going because I wasn't fully paying attention, but it was a quick read and I was pleasantly surprised at where it went.
We all have a lot of love in us and there are so many different kinds of love and we see it presented in this book. It's important to remember that there's so much love and different kinds of love in this world and in our lives. And there is no right or wrong time to accept ourselves and live the way we want to live.

I’m sitting in P.J. Clarke’s
A neighborhood bar in midtown Manhattan that is known worldwide.  It was a favorite watering hole for the Madison Avenue crowd, back when they constituted a crowd. Lawyers and their clients discussed strategy over oysters. Agents and their artists bickered over percentages.  P.J.’s opened in 1884 and is a time capsule of a bygone New York.  I moved out of the city two decades ago, but just…

Contemporary Japanese light novels and classic American sci-fi are basically evil opposites when it comes to their titling conventions: both titles will be long and rambling, but the former will be a prosaically descriptive phrase that lays out the story's entire premise, while the latter will be a line from a poem the author liked that tells you absolutely fucking nothing.

ngl, I'm beginning to take issue with how in conversations about anti-intellectualism almost automatically, the face of girls and women will be slapped on the problem.
