Hc in my au:
Thranduil doesn’t speak Quenya, but he does speak Primitive Quendian bc he was literally there when that was still the language used, so while he doesn’t understand exactly what people are saying when they speak in quenya, he does get the gist of it using context clues.
The thing is, no one realizes it, so sometimes some noldor elves are talking in quenya, talking shit in front of him, thinking he can’t understand them, but he can. He’s been wanting to drop that little tit bit of information forever, but he can only do it once, so it has to have the largest impact as possible.
Naturally, he replys to something galadriel said in quenya in sindarin, knowing exactly what the conversation was about, in the middle of a banquet, and he could see half the elves present go through the 5 stages of grief right then and there as galadriel reboots her systems.

Miriel is a threat
The orc scout wonders, where that elf went. Miriel Therinde goes in for the kill. This is where Feanor gets it from.

I am participating in Tolkientober (no I am not too late what are you talking about)!
There are obviously a lot of beginnings in Tolkiens universe, but I like this one so here you go.

HEADCANON:
The early flora and fauna of Arda (i.e., before the making of Sun and Moon in the first age) was weird and entirely different from later times.
I realised that before the destruction of tree therenwas only starlight. The trees (from which Silmaril and Sun/Moon was made) were planted in Valinor, which is far from the Middle Earth, where the Elves awakened and lived for a duration of time. The light of the trees did not reach the middle earth.
The Trees could be considered the effective substitute of sunlight. So while the flora, and by the association, fauna of Valinor was what you see around yourself. Y'know, normal trees and plants that depended on sunlight for photosynthesis and normal animals that depended on these normal trees.
It does raises the question then how did life evolved in Arda? Or how does creatures survive the cold? And all the other little titbits. Considering the presence of Valar, let's leave it wacky Valar Magic....
Back to headcanon, the flora and fauna of everywhere, except Valinor, was weird as hell. Like carnivorous plant, chemosynthetic plants, symbiotic plants, movable plants and blue leaves, purple fruit, bioluminescent flowers,'what the hell is this? Plant? Animal? Insect' things. Brightly coloured animals, weird physiology, giant worms and centipede, eyeless fish, biolouminescent aquatic creatures in ponds, etc. Kind of a cross between psychedelic and horror.
Also, as the time went on, it all became a myth for Valinor born Elves. The elvish version of 'back in my day, you had yada yada yada to get to the school' thing that your parents or grandparents tells you when you're being obstinate.
(My another headcanon: The majority of elves following Finwions were Valinor born along with those who were nearly babies during the first great journey. But the awakened and old elves were like, 'nope. Not doing it.')
By the time Fingolfin and his intrigue came, the sun was already in the sky so it was a bit easy for them. But Feanorians, bam... they got the faceful of this horror for nearly a year.

i’m going to write about this later but what gets me is fics casually mentioning our royal elves having maids or whatever… like if you lived forever and also could just live in the woods and hunt and gather legally and easily would YOU have a job you didn’t like? why would there be a “lower class”? elves are utopian communists and that’s that. they clean up after themselves and pitch in for big jobs. yes i know tolkien said a lot of stuff and he’s wrong because he loved old english epics where people had to live under feudalism or whatever.

Silm OC’s: Inye of the Minyar. She is an avarin elf who stayed at Cuivienen while her brother Ingwe left to follow Orome to Valinor. She is kind of a hermit who cares for the gravesite of the Minyar after her loveaffair with the current queen of the Avari, Turinde, failed. She is as prideful as most Vanyar and just as stubborn. Ready to fuck you up. Hasn’t seen a comb in centuries.

TFO II | Chapter 13: give me your time
“Finwë keeps trying to offer me his own strength. Because I can’t do it on my own.” Elwë shook his head. “It just makes me colder.”
Enel sighed and reached out, laying his hand atop Elwë’s knee. The taller elf shivered and closed his eyes, subsiding and letting the gentle wave of familiar power soothe him.
“Does that hurt?”
“No,” Elwë sighed. “I don’t know why.”
Enel pulled back and shuffled several pieces of bark, resuming his work.
“Well, I’m not going to pretend I understood most of that,” Enelyë decided, leaning over towards them. “But maybe you should talk to Finwë about it rather than assuming what he feels?”
whee new chapters :) thinkin’ more about Elwë these days as well as his relationship with Elmo. there’s a reason they were considered ‘siblings’ more than any of the other Nelyarin wakers (aside from Enel & Enelyë in the first place). twinning!

MY FRIENDS, this song is a WHOLE-ASS ADAR VIBE.
Translation (according to Tolkien Gateway):
Here I am sitting in the pale moonlight;
from Ilmen sparks are shining in the night;
They see me, the silvery eyes,
as they saw the wakening Elves.
Joy the heavenly jewels give me,
I praise them in the fairest songs.
Forever is the moonlight new;
I watch them now as the first Elf did
as the first one of Cuiviénen
who saw the light of a star.

Elrond hides from the stars, at first. Morgoth's hazy corruption hid the sky, at Amon Ereb, and the Feanorians didn't spend much time outside at night anyway– it was dangerous, even for hardened warriors.
Maedhros and Maglor taught them about the stars of course, they were determined to give E&E education befitting of elvish princes, and no such education could be complete without thorough studies of both astronomy and the elvish star lore from the days of Cuivienen. Still, while they could chart the course of any star across the sky, and tell the tale of any constellation, E&E rarely actually got to see the stars.
They could, on rare nights when the smog wasn't so bad, see Gil-Estel, brightest of them all, faintly shining through the haze. They knew what it was. They didn't know what to think about it. The Feanorians didn't like discussing it, so E&E didn't either.
But then, Elrond and Elros left the Feanorians. Maedhros and Maglor sent them away from just about everyone and everything they'd ever known. They came to Gil-Galad's camp as traumatized children who were treated as objects of curiosity, veneration, even suspicion. Eyes follow them everywhere, and their gaze is never neutral– always approving or disapproving, angry or joyful, awed or fearful.
Gil-Galad's camp, guarded by Maiarin soldiers, is nearly free of Morgoth's corruption. For the first time, E&E see the light of the sun and moon in their full glory. They also see Gil-Estel, burning brightly against the dark sky; no faint light.
Elrond doesn't like it. He feels like Gil-Estel is watching him. When he tries to explain this to Gil-Galad, he's met with sympathy– of course Earendil is watching over him. But Gil-Galad doesn't understand.
Elrond hasn't gotten used to being watched, being evaluated, at Gil-Galad's camp. He'd never felt that way at Amon Ereb– where there had been far fewer elves and his presence had quickly become normal. All those elves watching him now? Viscerally uncomfortable. And the thought of the father he barely remembers being another set of eyes judging him is unbearable. After all, what if Earendil doesn't like what he sees?

Here is my drawing for @silmarillionepistolary day 2, Exploration!
There are a lot of drawings on this page, and Finwë has been practicing - though it isn’t just his sketches that are new. The Elves are migrating!
On the top left is a patch of strawberries, which Finwë really likes. The top left is an illustration of Oromë, the Elves’ Valadin guide, and his steed. There is also a sketch of a mountain, and a moment from the journey; some of the Elves are excited about the new land that Oromë is leading them to, but others are more wary about the possibility of danger (a company remained behind, at Cuivienen, which Finwë is still grieving). Then, on the bottom right, is a portrait of the weaver Míriel, whom Finwë finds very beautiful.
I had so much fun with this page (although not the horse or the mountains). So far this event has been lovely, and it’s a challenge figuring out how to draw in Finwë’s style, and also portray a story without words. I hope I’m doing well!
