Hello and welcome to Tolkien Gen Week!

July 3-9, 2023

This is a week to appreciate all of the incredible characters and relationships within Tolkien’s legendarium that fall under the broad category of “gen.” There is a great wealth of wonderful gen content in the Tolkien fandom, but those creations are not always the most visible because of the shipping-focused nature of fandom at large. This week is an effort to give them the appreciation they deserve.

Tolkien Gen Week began in 2018 and occurred again in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and we’re back for more from July 4-10, 2023!

Any content and creations are welcome as long as it is non-romantic and non-sexual! You can create edits, gifs, fanart, fanfic, fanmixes, and more! Please tag your posts with #tolkiengenweek AND @ mention this blog @tolkiengenweek so they can be easily found. If your submission turns into a long post, please put what you can beneath a “Keep reading” divider. You may also post your creations to our AO3 collection.

By popular request, I am putting together a list of anyone who:

makes a good-faith effort to keep transphobes off their blogs

Lost in thoughts, Caranthir failed to notice that the dead Orc he was walking past was not, in fact, dead. He cried out in surprise as his feet were pulled from under him and he landed face first in the mud. As he reached for his knives, a sword came down and impaled the Orc.

Turning to lay on his back, he looked up and saw standing above him, illuminated by the rising sun, an Edain woman, covered in blood and filth and Orc-guts and so utterly, breathtakingly beautiful that he was rendered unable to do anything but stare.

The work that would eventually be published as The Silmarillion has deep roots, having been first written down in the 1910s when Tolkien was still a young man fighting in World War I and beginning his career as a philologist. The earliest work on the "Silmarillion," published as The Book of Lost Tales, is a collection of characters, events, and ideas that, like mayflies, often survived only briefly beyond their birth before being replaced or stricken altogether. Ómar-Amillo is one such character, appearing only in the Lost Tales before Tolkien took his thoughts in a new direction.

This biography discusses the brief appearance of Ómar, who was a music god (along with several others ... part of the reason he possibly didn't stick around for long). As the brother of Salmar, Ómar illustrates the importance of music and the oral tradition in the legendarium, but his character and its eventual disappearance both also show how Tolkien's ideas about Arda aligned (and didn't) with the myths, legends, and histories of the peoples who inspired much of his work.

Tolkien Legendarium Characters and OCs Masterdocs

A collaboration of dedicated Tolkien fans like @arofili, @ambrorussa aka @welcometolotr, @jaz-the-bard, and @fingons-rad-harp (together with a little organizing help from mod stormxpadme) has spent the last few days, creating a comprehensive, easy access resource of every Tolkien character ever. The Tolkien Legendarium Characters Masterdoc is a spreadsheet that contains - to the best of the users’ ability - ALL 1100+ characters of Tolkien’s world. This resource is open to the public for fan projects of all kinds, though its creators are fanfiction writers and they organized the doc with their craft in mind.

Likewise, the users have created a parallel list for Tolkien OCs that everyone can be part of. The databases are organized by factors like character race/species, age, cultural/familial affiliation(s), life dates, associated places, Ages/timeframe of activity, gender and more.

If there’s something you’d like to add or alter on the canon character list, contact the sheet owner (@arofili on tumblr or annaquenta#6263 on discord) and they will consider your request.

If you want your own characters to be a part of the OC Masterdoc, contact mod @stormxpadme on tumblr.

The First Oath has been renegotiated, and many oathtakers released from the bonds of soul-draining servitude. But the Valar still need elves to create more Maiar, and a new generation of oathtakers must rise to the damned-yet-holy challenge.

@welcometolotr​ has generously allowed me to write another continuation of their fantastic AU the first oath, delving into the lives and choices of the second generation of oath-takers!

This will serve as a masterpost for my fic oaths retaken; oaths renewed, modeled after their own TFO masterpost.

I am a more chronological writer than my cowriter, but there are no guarantees I won’t jump around the timeline anyway, so therefore I will include relevant dates for each chapter. I will also include the relevant characters, relationships, and content warnings.

Laurelin, early in her recovery after the War of Wrath, wearing the brace made for her by Celebrimbor. Until Elrond managed to figure out a way to permanently repair her destroyed knee a few years later, wearing the brace was the only way she was able to walk at all.

She also got used to wearing wrap-tunics when they were the only thing she could get on without hurting herself, so that becomes her preferred choice in shirts.
