Al-Haitham Headcanons 01

I think his love language is acts of service.

Al-Haitham reads a lot, if he finds something that would be useful to you, he'd likely make note of it with sources, especially if you were going to use it in a paper.

Oh you got into an argument? Someone said something you disagree with? You struggled to support your point? He found some piece of information that supports your argument? Or maybe he found something that negates the other person's? He'll bring it to you.

Perhaps you had asked a random question: you were curious or wondering about something? If he comes across useful information again, he'll bring it to you, and explain it if you need him to.

Maybe you're stressed or struggling or your body hurts in some way? He's doing research and bringing it to you.

You've got a big daunting task? He's broken it down for you, maybe even helped you delegate and even eliminate some things too

Drapes his cape over you when you're napping and cold.

Someone is trying to belittle you? Let it be known that Al-Haitham has no problem silencing them, and in a truly intellectual manner.

Quality Time is another love language

As we all know: Al-Haitham dislikes having a large social circle. So if he is choosing to spend time with you, outside of work (or anything else that's necessary) nonetheless, he definitely values you.

For whatever reason I feel like he's more cuddly and probably goes for hugs more?

(For anyone reading Rationality of Emotion: when you see this appear again in that fic...well I mean I was always gonna use it there...)

I imagine his physical affections are more him holding you in some way, and mostly in private, and I mean just you and him private. Initially, when Kaveh was practically watching him like a hawk to see if he could display affection, Al-Haitham is deliberately avoiding any action that Kaveh was looking for.

That being said, if you're both reading on the sofa/couch looking thing in his house, he really enjoys kinda having you nestled into him? So you've got your back against the arm rest (you have it cushioned don't worry) with your head resting on his chest and your legs across his lap. Each of you just reading and enjoying the silence.

He usually isn't wearing his sound proof earpieces when you guys are doing this.

I can also imagine him going from mostly hugging due to requests to initiating hugs himself.

Yes he has hugged you from behind before, it was a hell of a day, he's kinda overstimulated, he's got his face in your neck, and is just leaning on you a bit. Please let him rest there for a bit, even if he's kinda heavy.

As for when he does kiss you though

I think Haitham's kisses are like cute little pecks on your temples or your head, or the juncture of your neck and shoulder. I don't think they're very common either.

If it's anywhere else he's probably got ulterior motives

But that's okay because he's your husband

While he is mostly private, he will absolutely state his claim if necessary

I don't think Al-Haitham is a very jealous guy

he trusts you, he understands that for the most part you know how to handle yourself (sometimes you need help when hilichurls are involved)

however he doesn't exactly trust strangers

so if someone wants to try their luck, and can't take a hint, he will absolutely be by your side, with a hand on your lower back as he excuses the two of you and guides you along

That hand of his stays there the whole way home.

if you aren't picking up on the fact that this person is trying to hit on you: I think he'd only watch for a little bit, curious if you're going to pick up on it, before appearing to help you exit (especially if you look tired)

As Muriel is sincerely praised by Crowley on their first trip out on their own, they realize for the first time just how badly they've been treated in heaven. It takes no less than an angel and a demon to comfort them.

"Hello, hello, hello!"

Crowley, who had been reading the paper in the quiet of the bookshop, was startled when Muriel came through the door.

He heard the angel's quick footsteps and lowered his newspaper just as she reached him.

He smiled slightly, for sometimes he felt he was looking at a clone of Aziraphale. Muriel still wore very light clothes and always had one or the other tartan accessory. The difference was that they used several tartans, and their outfits were far less outdated than Aziraphale's.

"I took the bus today!"

Muriel's eyes were shining and they were all excited as they continued, "I asked Aziraphale where I could find a bookshop that really sells books these days and he showed me several. He wanted me to ask you to take me, but I told him I wanted to go alone. He recommended the buses if I wanted to see a bit of the city at the same time. Which I did. By myself. And I even bought some books, look!"

Crowley had stood up as Muriel recounted their excursion and looked at the books, then said gently, "That's good, my little bee. You've done well. Come on, I'll make you some hot chocolate to celebrate!"

Muriel didn't answer right away and looked at him strangely.

"Muriel?"

They asked in troubled voice, "Why do you praise me every time I do something?"

Crowley leaned a little closer to them and said gently, "Because you deserve it. Because it's not easy adjusting to a new world like this."

Muriel shook their head, "You and Aziraphale did just fine."

Crowley replied, "Because we've had much longer to adapt, we've had millennia. You came here, unprepared, and found yourself with this flood of information that could destabilize anyone, and you're embracing it with both hands. That deserves all the praise in the world. Besides, I'm guessing you didn't get much praise up there."

Muriel replied softly, in the most natural way, "But that's normal, I'm no one".

Crowley grabbed them by the shoulders and, gently shaking them, said in a firm tone, "Never again do I want to hear those words come out of your mouth! You're not no-one. You're someone important to us here."

Muriel insisted, "But no one ever disagreed with me when I said that. Never."

"Your beatitudes?"

Muriel stood back, intimidated, while Saraqael moved toward the two archangels, who answered in unison, "Yes. 

"I think you should hear this. Muriel!" 

Muriel exclaimed, "Oh." She bowed and greeted them, keeping well away from where the angels were standing, "Hello."

Michael asked, "And you are?" 

Muriel shook their head and stammered, "Oh, no one. I mean, technically, Muriel, 37th order scrivener, but, you know, no one."

No one had disagreed with them.

Not a word.

They really were no one.

Muriel realized how differently the people here behaved toward them than the archangels and other higher angels had.

"Muriel!"

Crowley's voice snapped them out of their thoughts.

It wasn't Michael's voice, exasperated, making them feel like fools. Or Uriel's dismissive one, making them feel very small. 

Crowley's voice was warm as he told them, "It's because they're blind and have nothing but contempt for anything that isn't a source of power. But that doesn't make you no-one. Muriel, look at me. You are someone."

Muriel tried to say something, but there was a lump in their throat that prevented them from speaking.

They swallowed several times and managed to say, "I... I'm som... someone."

Their vision seemed to blur and they blinked several times, but nothing helped.

Crowley, who had moved closer to them, put his hand on their shoulder and said softly, in a voice as kind as ever, "Oh, Muriel..."

Muriel breathed, "What...what do I do?"

Crowley replied gently, "Let them flow..."

Muriel sniffed, "I... I don't know how to..."

Crowley answered softly, "Just let go. Let go my little bee, I'll catch you." 

Muriel sniffed bravely several times, trying to stop the tidal wave they felt rising inside of them and threatening to come out as Crowley, his hand reassuringly on their shoulder, repeated softly, "Let go."

Muriel repeated again, "I am someone..."

Crowley nodded and replied, "Yes, you are. You are someone."

Then he wrapped his arm around their shoulders and pressed them to his chest as the floodgates finally gave way and they allowed themselves to be overwhelmed by the pain they felt, the full extent of which they were finally realizing.

All these years of being ignored.

Isolated at their desk.

Seeing almost no one.

Performing unrewarding tasks.

Being belittled, sometimes even disdained.

Treated like a fool.

They cried about all of it, and Crowley held them in his arms the whole time, and as their tears soaked his black jacket, he thought of another angel who'd endured similar treatment and never complained either. 

"I... I think it's okay."

Muriel moved a little and Crowley opened his arms to let them go. But when he saw their unsettled face, he put his hands on their shoulders and said softly, "How about we just sit down for a while?"

Muriel wiped their face with their sleeve and nodded, allowing themself to be guided to the sofa where they sat down.

As soon as they were seated, the doorbell rang and Aziraphale's voice was heard, "Hello! Someone's here?"

Crowley answered, "We're here, on the sofa."

He saw Muriel trying to hide their condition, but he gently took their hand and shook his head.

Aziraphale had arrived in front of them and exclaimed, "Oh my God! What's the matter? Muriel, has someone hurt you?"

Crowley couldn't suppress an amused smile as the angel fussed over Muriel before kneeling before them and handing them his handkerchief.

They took it and wiped their face.

Aziraphale turned to Crowley and asked worriedly, "What happened?"

Crowley asked Muriel, "Will you allow me to explain it to him? I think he'll understand better than anyone."

Muriel nodded.

Crowley briefly explained the reasons for Muriel's condition, and when he was finished, he stood up, Aziraphale immediately taking his place next to Muriel. Crowley stepped back a little to leave them alone, knowing that Aziraphale would be able to give them an even better understanding than he had.

The angel placed his hands on Muriel's as they fumbled with the handkerchief and said softly, "Muriel, let me repeat Crowley's words to you first. You are someone. You are an angel who has bravely, day after day, dutifully done your job and received nothing in return but contempt and disregard. But because you only knew this kind of treatment, you thought it was normal. Believe me, I know, I know very well."

Muriel lifted their head sharply and retorted, "You? But you're so good, and talented, and smart, and-"

"And? And so are you, Muriel, as much as I am. And that didn't stop Gabriel, Michael, Uriel and Sandalphon from putting me down all the time. From making me realize that I'd never be anything but a drudge. An idiot who didn't understand anything. I have hundreds of examples to tell you about the way they treated me that I never thought to rebel against because I said to myself, they're the good guys, they're archangels, they're better than me, so it's normal what they do. But it's not normal, Muriel. It's mean and hurtful and unnecessary. But here, Muriel, Crowley and I would never treat you this way, and better yet, if anyone ever did, you have every right to rebel. To fight back or to turn away. But under no circumstances should you accept this. You are someone, and I'm glad to see that someone thriving in this world. I can't wait to see you experimenting with many new things, getting more and more confident, getting more and more brazen with Crowley..."

"Angel!" the demon exclaimed, turning to them as Muriel let out a small laugh.

Then Muriel looked at them in turn and said softly, their voice a little hoarse, "Thank you both. I couldn't have fallen into a better place for my first and last mission on Earth."

Aziraphale replied, "I'm glad you knocked on my door, Inspector Constable, and that I offered you your first cupperty."

Muriel chuckled again, and Crowley asked, "So do you want that mug of hot chocolate?"

But the angel shook their head and stood up, "No, I promised to tell Nina and Maggie about my first trip to the city, and Nina's hot chocolate is better than yours."

Crowley exclaimed, "Hey, you're getting pretty cheeky."

Muriel smiled and started for the front door when they turned and walked toward Crowley, hugging him for a few seconds before almost running away.

Crowley turned to Aziraphale to comment on what had just happened when he saw that the angel had gotten up and was following Muriel with his eyes until they entered the cafe.

He walked over to him and wrapped his arms around him from behind, resting his chin on his shoulder, then asked softly, "Are you okay, Angel?"

Aziraphale leaned against him and replied, "A while back I would have said yes, I'm okay and hidden it behind a smile, but we don't lie to each other anymore, so, no, I'm not completely okay. In fact, I'm appalled at the extent of my ex-employer's damage, if I may say so. Muriel thought it was okay to think of themself as a nobody."

Crowley hummed against his ear and said quietly, "I know, Angel."

"Crowley?"

"Yes?"

"Will you hold me?"

Crowley replied softly, "Of course, Angel. You're looking at Crowley, the demon comforter of angels mistreated by heaven."

Aziraphale turned and laughed lightly, before saying, "Idiot."

Then Crowley wrapped his arms around the angel, holding him close as the angel's arms wrapped around his waist.

Aziraphale murmured against his chest, "Thank you."

"For what?" the demon asked against his hair.

"For encouraging me through the years. Thanks to you, I never felt like no one. Even when I thought we were each on our own side, you never offered me anything but respect."

Crowley pressed a kiss to the angel's hair and replied gently, "Because you deserved no less. And then this pure angel giving a couple such a powerful weapon to defend themselves in the desert forced my respect from the start. You have never been no one to me, Angel."

He pushed Aziraphale away from him a little, then cupped his face in his hands and kissed him tenderly before pulling him back into his arms. 

Over the angel's head, through the glass window, he saw Muriel sitting in front of a mug that was probably filled with hot chocolate topped with an indecent amount of whipped cream. Nina and Maggie were sitting with them, and the three of them seemed to be happily chatting.

He smiled, glad that this angel and the one he held in his arms would never again feel that they didn't matter. 

For they were loved and cherished for who they were.

As they always should have been.

Yes! It’s especially insane with Phoebe bc like the show goes out of it’s way to explicitly show how fucked up she was idk how people forget it

yep yep yep!! it's quite literally the entire point of the episode. but i still see people all the time like...calling mulder stupid for "trusting" her and making jokes about the way he behaves around her and it's just like...please don't piss me off. same exact thing with diana.

fire is one of my favorite episodes though i think it's such an interesting look at mulder's character and example of the ways that he views and interacts with people close to him

because he understands and acknowledges from the very beginning that phoebe's just there to fuck with him, that she made the trip from boston to DC to bring him in on the investigation for no reason other than knowing that it will scare him

he knows what she’s doing, and he still agrees to help her

his only concession being that scully not be involved

noting that he's not going to "put her through" phoebe's games

this is something that we've seen him do before, with his former partner jerry earlier in season one, who broke into his office and stole his work.

it's clear throughout ghost in the machine that mulder isn't comfortable working with him, but helps him anyway because jerry asked him to

and builds him up when jerry is feeling insecure

he infamously does it again with diana, always affording her the benefit of the doubt and defending her

and with his parents, consistently coming whenever they call, despite all of their lies and neglect

(side note from pulling ghost in the machine caps but his ties in this ep are soooo classic baby spooky i miss s1 soooo much)

anyway, this is the dynamic that fire circles around, and the only time in the episode that mulder pushes back against phoebe is when he cracks this joke about having a "refined technique" with women who cheat

which he apologizes for instantly, recognizing that it upset her

fire is also one of the best portrayals of the true sign of a toxic/abusive relationship: not realizing anything is wrong with it until you tell your best friend

i see criticism of this episode sometimes that interprets it as glorifying phoebe, portraying her as sexy and her behavior as righteous, but i disagree.

i don't think that you can base the episode's stance on phoebe on mulder's behavior, he's responding to her through a very warped and controlled lens. just because he views her in a positive light, doesn't mean that we should as the audience.

whereas, scully is immediately wary of phoebe and critical of her, even before knowing the context for her actions.

this shot is my favorite lmao. she is contemplating murder. she is wondering if she could get away with it.

her lil passive aggressive "bye bitch" finger wave

her "mmmmyeah sure sherlock"

her watchful eye as she hangs in the doorway while mulder and phoebe meet with the arson specialist

she literally sits at his desk in his chair and waits for him just to make this sherlock holmes joke 😭😭😭 they are BEST friends

now, this is when she finds out the true history with phoebe, and the reason behind her visit. and it's when mulder tells her that she's off the case.

and from that point, scully starts investigating the murders herself, consulting her own sources to put together her own theories

while these two do absolutely fuck all

she shows up uninvited at the event in boston, having SOLVED THE CASE HER-FUCKING-SELF

and she's the only one who gives a fuck when mulder gets hurt

while phoebe shakes hands and schmoozes at the party

sweetie pie making sure her partner gets some water and some rest

now, dana 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

after making sure mulder is okay (and getting a peek at him shirtless) she shows him the evidence that she found, telling him that she just "didn't know a whole lot about arson" so took the opportunity to do some research "for my own edification, of course" GIRLLLLL

and they identify the groundskeeper as the murderer based on the information that she gathered

the face of a woman who single-handedly solved a string of serial murders to get her best friend's bitch of an ex away from him. she is truly an inspiration to us all.

and she has 1 more sherlock holmes joke in her.

so, anyway, mulder is visibly uncomfortable around phoebe from the start, and this is something that scully picks up on immediately, even before being told any information about phoebe or her motives

and this is an ongoing theme from the very beginning, as mulder is generally unaggressive and compassionate to a fault, leaving scully feeling a responsibility to be conscious and wary of their surroundings.

scully isn't being jealous towards phoebe, just like she isn't "taking things personally" with diana. she understands this about mulder and how exploitable it is, and she's fiercely protective of both him and the kindhearted qualities that leave him vulnerable to these situations

this is gonna be a long rambly one, and probably repeating a lot of things that have already been said, sorry

I think the failure of the friendship/rivalry system in DA2 is so interesting and like. obviously it was an experiment, they hadn't tried it before, and it was implemented on a game with a very short development, so they obviously didn't have time to really think through the implications and refine it. and I think it's not unfair to label it a failure, since they obviously returned to Origins-style approval for Inquisition. but I think because it was so experimental and unrefined it's interesting to examine like. I think part of the problem was that they had a pretty clear idea of what friendship entails, since that carried over from Origins, and the big failure is with rivalry simultaneously meaning a lot of different things to a lot of different characters (even in how you gain rivalry with a single character, those rivalr bumps will come from vastly different sources, even sometimes *things that you would gain friendship for if you were on the friendship path*) but like broadly, despite this, still having to mean "your characters will be closer/understand each other better and remain together in the climax" and that's even BEFORE throwing rivalmance into the mix.

and like I think, there's potential there, in that in some cases it works just fine! like take Isabela, and consider how it reinforces what they were presenting as her main character flaw at the start of DA2, being that... well! she freed a bunch of people once who were about to be sold into slavery, and that went sideways for her, landed her deep in debt, and she feared for her life, and things snowballed, and somehow this all lead to the qunari kirkwall invasion. and so she's sworn off that and it's every woman for herself now because that's so much less complicated than the hell her life has been for the past several years! and you have the chance to agree with her that, yes girl, personal freedom and liberty is paramount, so do what you want girl. or you can push back and say, hey, if you believe in personal liberty so much, isn't it sometimes necessary to sacrifice for the freedom of others? didn't you do that? wasn't that worth it? wouldn't you do it again? and it's great! it's fine! it gets heated and contentious but not abusive, and it's not dragging her out of her own ideals, it's pushing her further into examining what they really entail. and it's not really better or worse than the friendship path, it's just a different path to where she ends up as a person by act 3.

and then you look at how merrill's rivalry is like going. yeah. I think you're a small infant baby who can't make her own decisions, and that everything anyone ever did to prove you wrong was right and you are wrong and also, marethari was right to force you out of the clan and then continue to meddle in your life long after you left just to continue to prove to you how wrong you are, you wrong infant baby who is wrong and also a child. and also ruining the lives of everyone you touch! like a wrong demon baby who is evil and wrong. like! rubbish lmao.

and like I think that a DA2-style friendship-rivalry path with morrigan would be great! because with Origins-style friendship you shove gifts at her to make her forgive you for not committing crimes against humanity for the lolz, and getting into a rivalry to confront her head-on about, "girl, I know you were raised in a swamp by the abusive mother of the century, but we need to talk about the sociopathy" could be cool and interesting! and, like, there's kind of already the idea there with softening/hardening alistair and leliana as well, and I'm sure that could be expanded upon? but there are other characters I shan't name whose hypothetical rivalry paths haunt me to even briefly consider.

and I'm thinking, could this be solved by adding another axis? like turn it into an "agree" "disagree" axis ("coddle vs confront"? not in those exact terms but yk) and then still have that "I would die for you" vs "I would sell you to satan for a corn chip" axis for the things that would actively push them away? but that's overcomplicating things! by a lot! and you'd still be mapping some very different ideas onto an oversimplified system. so maybe that's way too much overcomplication for not enough benefit, and the return to a simple yes-no axis is right. I just think rivalry as a game system it was interesting and messy and worth thinking about

Aura

 I’m sorry but I feel this needs to be said. Aura is by far the most under-used source in RWBY beside dust. Look I get it aura is used to make barriers and fuel semblances but that's it. I mean the semblances are sometimes horrible at best. Especially when they’re passive. Oh my, the worst semblance to me is sadly Qrow’s because anything could happen. You could be enjoying your day and something bad happens because you're there. But that’s minor.

Now some semblances are good. We got semblances that can stop time. We got some that can erase memories. We even got some that can create clones and summon creatures. Too bad summoning things is only in the Schnee department but still. However some of them can be both imitated and surpassed by other characters. For example, Adam, Yang and Tock. Adam creates a wave projectile to slice his enemies. Yang can build and store energy every time she takes damage from enemies and dish it back ten fold. Tock can literally take no damage until her timer goes off. Guess who can copy these abilities? Five characters; Ren, Blake, Fox, Qrow and yes, even Jaune can do it.

Four of these characters have managed to replicate Adam and Yang’s semblances. Blake and Qrow manage to create slashes in the air to launch at their opponents before. Though theirs are not strong as Adam’s they still performed the same function. Fox and Ren can do the same like Yang. I mean, in volume one and two, Ren and Fox made Grimm’s bodies explode. And the sad part about it is Jaune can do all this because of his aura reserves and his semblances. And this is why aura control is needed.

We need characters who are better skilled in aura. I understand semblances are supposed to be unique and tied more to the user but if you were a hunter and you never unlocked your semblance or if you did but it’s not as helpful as you hope, what would be your best source to fight with? Your aura, because so far semblances have been more of let down due to being similar to others. Examples are Harriet and Neon, both being fast characters. Or where it's just in their names. Like Vine with extended limbs; Elm being rooted to the ground; or Clover having good luck. But if you understand the basics and learn more ways to use your aura you can basically do anything. The prime demonstration is Hazel. Nora said herself, Hazel can recharge faster than most people. This means no matter how much damage they dish out Hazel will recover and still keep going.

(Bro I need to say this. Man I’m sorry but in my opinion Hazel is the strongest male character in the RWBY series. Bro, think about it, James was scared of Hazel more than he was of Cinder. And when we saw him fight Salem,… oh my god, these kids were lucky he didn’t really want to fight them because if he did they would all be dead. Like Hazel is the best example of both aura and dust users. He should have stayed alive. Maybe then the kids can finally have a functioning adult in their lives. Hazel solos.)

Okay, after explaining all this, how else can aura be used? Well other than being barriers, slash waving projectiles and a healing factor, it can also be used like haki, chakra or for this show like it was before Salem screwed the world over, magic. But only maidens have magic right? Well let me tell you why I disagree with that statement. But first let's talk about dust.

Dust is the second most under-used source in RWBY. The reason I say secondary is because at least it’s visible in the world. Not only that it is used in weapons, machines, and as ammunition. It is really a natural resource but no one ever uses it in its rawest form. No one except Hazel and maybe Weiss. And what makes it better is they are Remnants of magical elements. Dust in rawest form is more powerful than a gun. And if used properly you can rival maidens.

Maidens are supposed to be special due to them being able to control the elements without the need of dust. However, their power might as well be that of a semblance considering it requires aura to even use. I mean think about it Cinder and Raven. They have used the maiden powers which not only exhausted them as well decreased their aura to the point they break. Not only that they were able to be defeated or in Cinder’s case almost die multiple times. And to prove my case further, Salem is a magic user yet Hazel still killed her multiple times. Hell, Penny was able to beat Cinder even without maiden powers. Basically, the sad truth is the maidens are just keys. If Cinder crossed the wrong person she would be dead. Never mind that if Hazel, Watts and Tyrian wanted to, they actually would have killed her themselves. Especially if she keeps messing up they're plans.

So how does dust increase the use of aura? Well dust is part of the world. And so is the aura. So wouldn’t having more of a connection with the world increase aura and dust efficiency. I mean Vine said aura can be extended. So using the environment itself is good. Just like chakra, if you extend the aura enough to spread across an area enough while using gravity dust you can increase the pressure to keep opponents down. With plant dust trapping your enemies to a certain extent. Look, I am sorry. Please, forgive me but after thinking about this it made me ask this question, “What is a hunter?” Like really what is a hunter because so far this show has disappointed me on the term. We have seen hunters die whether be by non-hunter groups or Grimm who are arguably not that much of a threat. If anything, ordinary people can fight and kill them. Even semblances are starting to become nothing but excuses to why characters act the way they do, like with James who was determined to blow up Mantle because of his ability. Or having basic abilities that other characters should possess like Tyrian’s aura breaking ability. It’s sad really, aura is supposed to be this source of power but it's not as weaponized as I hoped it would be. But that’s my opinion.

Pondering Things 7: Fear and Judgement

I didn't think I would be Creating a new Pondering Things entry this late. But here we are. I hope you all had a wonderful day today. For me, things have been rather rough. As you may have already seen from my system mates, I've been having issues with blood pressure. Even though I take medication, it's still tends to screw up every once in a while. I'm not worried about it particularly. Like always, it'll go back to normal eventually. And once that happens, we'll be back in smoother waters. And once we're in smoother waters, we'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming. And by that, I mean your average posts. Part of me wonders if this even worth it. I Mean. sure I have people following us now. But part of me is a little paranoid. We are an endogenic system, after all. And people don't take kindly to us.

That's something that's been on my mind a lot lately. I'm afraid of how people see us. I'm afraid they'll look at us and think that we're faking. Is this a normal thing for a system host to feel? Is it normal to feel like I'm faking everything? Is it bad to fear another’s judgment? The guys tell me that I'm thinking too much about it. And that I should keep going. But is worth it if it affects me so much? I know I should listen to them. They know what they're talking about. But part of me is still very much afraid. But if I keep letting fear control me, it'll keep winning. And I can't let it win. I have to keep going. We have to keep going. If not for ourselves, then for the other endogenic systems out there. I want to be a voice for them so that they too can be heard. I want the world to know that we're all right. I want the world to know that We're not here to hurt people with DID, Or people with OSDD. We're not here to steal resources. We're just existing. That's all we're doing. It's our existence somehow a crime? Does our existence scare them somehow? Because I assure you, we don't bite. Even though some of my system mates would gladly bite aggressors. Anyway, I Just don't want to come on this website just to fear for my own validity. But I also want to keep posting. Because if I don't, then someone may go unheard. And I don't think I could live with that. Everyone has a right to be heard. Even the ones you disagree with. No matter how much It hurts you to hear what they say, They have every right to speak. It doesn't mean that they're correct in any way. But they deserve the dignity of being heard. I have to remind myself of that sometimes. Of course, there's a difference between speaking one’s mind and spreading hate. And some of these antis tend to walk a fine line between the two. And occasionally step on to one side carelessly. I find that most of the time they step on to the side of hate speech. And yes, it is considered hate speech when you target somebody. They're targeting endogenic systems, therefore it is hate speech. At least that's what I think.

I know I should stay out of system discourse, and I know it's not good for me to dabble in it. But I feel like I must. Because if I don't, someone may get hurt. The way they talk about us is hurtful. Their words are the reason why I'm so nervous to keep posting. I keep seeing them wherever I look. And it cuts like a knife every time. Miguel has been trying to keep me away from such things because he knows how much it affects me. Bless him, he tries so hard. Both Knockout and Starscream have also put in valiant efforts as well. But sometimes posts like that can't be avoided. I still read them and they still hurt. Even in the Pro endo tags and endo safe tags, I still see them. I've seen people claiming that people like us are just unable to recognize our trauma. They essentially attempt to gaslight us into thinking we have trauma. When in reality, we have none. I, the host, have mental health issues, of course. But that doesn't necessarily mean that I have trauma.

They always use the DSM 5 as a de facto source of information. However, the DSM 5 isn't exactly accurate. I would suggest they check out the ICD 11. It's a fair bit more accurate. Of course, some of them aren't going to listen to us. And that's their prerogative. But constantly saying that the DSM 5 is completely infallible is an outright lie. Besides that, mental health books such as the DSM 5 only highlight issues that make existence difficult for people. It only highlights behaviors that are detrimental to the patient. Granted, I am no mental health expert, but neither are the people accusing every endo of faking. I wish they would do more research before they shoot off at the mouth.

TL;DR: All endogenic systems are valid. All systems of unknown origin are valid. The people saying that we're faking are not.

anyway so I finished the main storyline of Pokemon Scarlet today and I’m just. I’m. yeah.

yeah before anything starts just, if you played Violet replace Sada for Turo and Koraidon for Miraidon, I’m tired. it’s 6:05am as I’m writing this and I’m losing it.

man I don’t even know what to say. the amount of sheer emotional damage I took all throughout Area Zero.

I mean, just??? something must’ve fucking gone wrong. like, there’s the one journal entry where she specifically says that Sada’s excited to have a kid. shit went downhill so fucking fast and there’s not really an explanation for it, like--

Turo just ups and leaves her, which is never really explained (but imo the most likely explanation was probably their views on what “paradise” was or whatever, maybe I’ll look into this more when I’m more awake). she builds an AI for herself at one point, creates a disgustingly complicated security system for her time machine all in the case that it gets shut down. at some point her rational self gets overtaken by obsession, but it happens rather quickly, and so for AI Sada to be the rational one makes sense here. I think that there’s two possibilities here, either 1. the betrayals that she goes through causes her to believe that someone would actively try to sabotage her sometime in the future, which is why she creates this intricate defense system, or 2. something in Area Zero truly causes her to go insane. and in both worlds, by the time she starts making the defense system, her dream is all she cares about protecting and carrying out, and there’s no going back.

it does start to make sense from there. it’s implied that AI Sada tried telling Sada about the negative environmental impact, and Sada just shrugged it off, saying it was natural. I wonder if Sada truly believed that to be true, considering the fact that she would later on die protecting the passive Koraidon from the aggressive one. I don’t think she genuinely believed in survival of the fittest, she was just bullshitting because she wanted to bring her dream to reality. no, at that point, she needed it.

(in a way, Arven was right. bringing the passive Koraidon back to Area Zero actually caused Sada’s death. Koraidon was, in fact, the reason why he didn’t see his mother ever again.)

doesn’t change the fact that she was, in fact, a shitty mother. but I think there’s so much more to her character than just that---I mean, Sada loved Arven. there’s no doubt about it---the AI says it and his pictures are in her labs. and she did, from time to time, send him emails. she loved him, but she completely neglected him for her work.

I saw a post earlier where someone called her selfish for absorbing herself into her work, and how she continued to be selfish as AI Sada when she went into the time machine, and I have to disagree with that.

I can understand the first part---but the second part? the post said it was selfish of her to leave Arven again. but I want to mention that it was stated, very explicitly, that AI Sada could not leave Area Zero due to the power source. the AI would have had to left Arven eventually, and considering the defense protocols, they didn’t have much time left. it would have initiated the next part of the protocol, likely forcing the player into a third battle. and considering how close the second battle was, the third would’ve almost most definitely been a defeat.

time was of the essence there. and she said what needed to be said. didn’t even hesitate before sacrificing herself.

and yes. it was a sacrifice. again, the AI cannot leave Area Zero due to the power source. if she’s traveling back in time, who the hell knows if there will even be a power source for her to even use? there is literally no way of knowing.

though, actually, now I think about it, they mentioned that if a human goes through they can’t come back to the present. what happens if an AI does it? weren’t they able to send master balls there and back?

okay I’m done rambling for now, I’ll probably post more scuffed (but much more organized) theories when I’m. you know. actually awake.

That decision has now been delayed until Nov. 17. Pettit’s current contract ends on Dec. 1.

December 1? That's new. It has been June 1, 2023. Pettit's previous contracts were up in the summer too. So have things changed? Is this why Pettit is flipping off the school in the pulpit? He's nearly out?

I asked that question on the site. Let's see if we get more info on that.

Secondly, the one alumnus who is familiar with the board (aren't we all though? I mean, really. We're a small community) stated that:

Some board members have also blamed Pettit for firing some of the school’s most conservative professors during a time of budget cuts. But defenders say that decisions about which professors to release were made by college deans and leaders, not Pettit.

The second sentence? It's BJU, not a regular school, so who knows why those professors were let-go.

But the first point? Hmm.... Who are these "most conservative professors"?

As usual, WutBJU has kept track of the large lay-offs. Here's the 2018 list. Those are mostly music folks. WutBJU counted closely at the time, remember?

Now the School of Fine Arts has always been the red-headed stepchild of the Board, so they don't care about those folks. If you know, you know.

Now, here's the 2019 list which has overlap with the 2018 group. Here's WutBJU's coverage of those folks. One name that stands out there is Bible faculty member, Randy Jaeggli.

"Conservative," yes. Well-liked, yes. He wasn't fired though. I mean, people do retire.

Royce Short is another one.

There's another name and a big one. Look at Randy Leedy's LinkedIn page.

He's not listed as "retired" in that 2019 list, and he clearly lists his job ending at BJU in May 2019.

Is he "conservative"? You bet.

Does he have the kind of published expertise that might be really perturbed by the "liberal drift" currently at play at Bob Jones University?

The school's founding academic prowess is getting decimated. You can't deny that Positive folks. 9% of the graduates are from Religion? That's astounding!

Hello! I am a Christian and I've seen what you and in-christalone were discussing. I am not here to tell you that you are not a Christian or do/say anything hateful or vindictive. Just offer some extra insight. I will preface this by saying that I can understand your reasoning and how you came to the conclusion you did (I can't say I agree, I see your reasoning). From what I can tell, it is something that you have thought about a lot. The thing with it is, from what I understand, is that while the brain may develop before the genitals- the brain that is there is not in and of itself gendered. Overall DNA would decide gender, not the brain itself. Female and male brains are different yes, but, from my understanding (as I am imperfect and can be wrong), those differences are in response to the existence of the sex organs, male/female hormones, and anatomy- upon development. So if this is the case, it would then make sense that the dysphoria is a mental, and not anatomical issue, right? If that is so, then it would be a situation where it is mind VS body. Another example of which, is body dysmorphia. To me, it makes more sense to heal the mind so it can accept the body, instead of changing the body to suit the mind. Especially with the alternative being invasive procedures, which are much more prone to going wrong and causing more harm than healthy therapies (emphasis on healthy, bc I know there have been a lot of unhealthy means of therapy/conversion for everyone under the lgbt spectrum). For example. If I think that I am to fat, but my body is perfectly healthy, would it be good for me to have liposuction when I don't need it? (most doctors would refuse to do it, after all.) Or would it be better to learn to accept my body as it is and be comfortable with it, without the risks that surgery can entail? Yes some people do actually need it, but those people's bodies are not healthy and the benefits they would have outweigh the risk. But the only way people die without gender-corrective surgeries, is when they become suicidal over it- which is, again, a mental condition that can be helped via therapy. Would one not be able to argue that God gave us therapy in order to combat gender dysphoria, like we have glasses and prosthetics for those who need them- without having to resort to expensive, harsh procedures to make those who experience gender dysphoria feel okay in their skin? That all said, I do believe that if an adult wants the surgery, they should be permitted to do with the body they were given as they wish. My overall point being is that, your perspective is worth thought (because I have come to learn that mankind can misinterpret what the Bible is trying to tell us- I mean, with all the different denominations there are, that is a pretty hard thing to argue.) but overall... I still disagree. I hope I'm not coming across as condescending, hateful, or anything like that. I am just offering a little extra food for thought...Im sorry of course if this is just rehashing a lot of things you have heard before. And by no means should you pressured to answer this if you do not want to. I'm not sending this in looking for an argument. It's just out of concern.

So, while I understand the perspective that the brain is not gendered in utero, that is simply not correct. Now, I will preface this by saying that I may be incorrect, but what influences development of the baby's gender is the hormones present during development. And the baby's gender can sometimes switch mid-development (I think, gotta do more research on that. My support for this is solely because during my brother's first ultrasound, they thought he was a girl.) That's, I believe, the source of gender incongruence. I'm open to someone more learned than myself to telling me I'm wrong.

But, as you can see, it is incorrect to compare gender dysphoria to something like body dysmorphia, as one is a neurological issue, and the other is a mental disorder. It would be more accurate, in my opinion, to compare it to something like ADHD. It's something that cannot be changed about a person. However, it cannot be treated the way that adhd is, because it is not due to any chemical imbalances. It's just straight up their brain being wired differently than their body.

The reason that we have gender affirming surgeries in the first place is because, if someone truly has gender dysphoria, it does not go away with therapy. However! I always suggest trans people go to therapy first to make sure it isn't something else. The issue is that for trans people, their depression, anxiety, etc, is caused by their gender dysphoria, not the other way around. Why? Because their brain is wired differently than their body. And to only treat the symptoms instead of the source is incorrect treatment. It'd be like only giving someone with strep throat cough medicine instead of antibiotics.

Now, this all being said, things are different for Christians. We can't go changing our genders willy nilly, because God has called us all to different things. We should instead go to Him in prayer to find His will for our lives. For some, that will be gender affirming surgeries. For others, it will be to treat the symptoms. Why the difference? They both can help guide fellow trans people in the way that God wants them to go. And, in the case of the latter, can offer coping mechanisms to people that don't really have gender dysphoria, but still struggle.

The film – set three years into the Clone Wars and nineteen years before the events of the OG Star Wars film, A New Hope – essentially follows skilled Jedi Knight, Anakin Skywalker as he turns against his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi and explores how he became Darth Vader. Look, I’ll admit that the original Star Wars films, Episodes IV, V and VI, are impeccably good but Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith comes pretty close to their level of ‘good’. First of all, the beautiful cinematography and incredible visual effects of the opening action-packed scene are breathtaking.Ewan McGregor gives an incredible performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the third Star Wars film. Also, the plot of Revenge of the Sith is intriguing. Knowing exactly how a villain fell from grace and became the ‘bad guy’ is such a thrilling and thought-provoking film device. Plus, the music from John Williams is sensational as is Ewan McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi. There’s a reason he was asked to reprise his role in the upcoming series that’ll focus on Obi-Wan, and it’s because he’s a damn fine actor. Not to mention the iconic and enthralling duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin, played by Hayden Christensen – who is also set to appear in the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Also, the emotional discourse between the two post-fight (which you can watch below) is heartwrenching. The line, “You were the chosen one!” gets me every time.An emotional scene between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.Now, I know some Star Wars fans are going to entirely disagree and be rather outraged that I dared to make the point that one of the prequels is just as good as Star Wars IV-VI. I know the main critiques are that the dialogue in Star Wars I-III is too simple and that Ja Ja Binks is the most annoying character of all time. To them, I say, yes the dialogue is simple but it allows children and younger generations to understand the plot and fall in love with the Star Wars universe. And hey, sometimes simple dialogue is miles better than convoluted nonsense that no one can make sense of. Plus, the simplicity makes Revenge of the Sith extremely quotable. I mean, who hasn’t yelled, “UNLIMITED POWER”? And as for Ja Ja Binks, I have no defence. He is annoying but hey, he only has one line in Revenge of the Sith, meaning the film is not really ruined by his presence as it’s incredibly fleeting. I guess what I’m trying to say is Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith did not deserve the copious amount of hate it got upon its release in 2005, and it’s time we all apologise to it and realise it’s definitely worth rewatching. Maybe I'll go into more detail on this later but I was in class last week and we were talking about how to incorporate social justice into our pedagogy and curriculum as math teachers (because there's a lot of people who think social justice doesn't belong in the math classroom and should be left to the social studies teachers and those people would be wrong)

So we were looking at the development of racial identity and how it's impacted by education because education is currently built on a lot of structures that stem from white supremacy and we were looking at a framework that lays out a lot of the cultural features of white supremacy and uh...

Let me just say that a lot of "cancel culture" and the anti mentality is really, disturbingly aligned with the cultural facets of white supremacy, and I don't think it's coincidental.

This isn't to say that everyone who ascribes to these ideologies of cancel culture or antis is a white supremacist. I'm not making any statements on anyone's motivations or intentions here.

I just want to say that it's important to educate yourself on these things, because it's very easy to go into something with good intentions and find those who want to take advantage of that.

Summary: dad!Tom x reader. Tom gets jealous when you solely focus on your six month old son, Oliver. You both then cuddle and afterwards spend time together as a whole family. It’s just a blurb with Tom acting like a big baby.

Tom Holland was never the one to get jealous but from the moment you entered his life, this was the one emotion that made itself known on regular basis. He always told you that you were too good for him and he didn’t deserve you. You disagreed him with every time because it was other way around. However, you gave up on it after sometime and just kissed him whenever he spoke regarding the subject.

An ‘I love you’ was your answer for situation like these and it never went away even after three years of marriage.

Your husband never left your side for even a second whenever you both went out with friends or family. It was not that he didn’t trust you or that he didn’t trust the people around you. He just wanted to be near you and wanted your sole attention. Your Tommy was a needy little baby. Hence, it was safe to assume that he was jealous when your baby boy took all of your love and time.

You both had been trying for almost two years after your marriage and every negative test took away a little bit of hope until the lucky day came. It was one of the best day of your lives and Ollie was a mumma’s boy from day one. Of course, Tommy was jealous but his heart also beamed with adoration whenever he saw the both of you together. The only man Tom could ever afford to share you with was your son. The little boy was really stealing hearts from the moment he entered this world and Tom wouldn’t want it any other way.

“I’ll go pick him up. You sleep, ‘kay?” Getting out of the bed, you tried to coax your husband back to bed. Tom had a full day at the set and he helped you with Ollie as soon as he came back. He really needed to rest.

“No, I’ll get him.” He tried to protest but the red, swollen eyes were a dead giveaway.

“He likes me better anyways so I’ll do it. Night, love.”

“That’s mean!”

You stood up without listening to another word and made your way towards your baby’s neutral themed nursery. You both wanted to keep the gender a secret till the very end. It was truly a surprise for Tom when the doctors announced that you were parents to a beautiful baby boy because he believed that his first born would be a girl. Nevertheless, he got into his daddy mode as soon as Oliver was placed in his hands by the nurse and has never let up since then.

“Hey baby! What happened? Why you crying, bubba?” You had to admit that you were getting pretty good at the baby talk. It has been six months of practicing so you better hope you were.

“Mmmmm.”

“Say mumma. Mumma. Yes, you can do it. You’re such a good boy. Yes, you are.” From the past week, Ollie has been trying to say words and you just really want his first word to be your name.

Cooing at you, he placed his head on your shoulder with his thumb stuck in his mouth. He was teething so he was in a phase where he put everything and anything in his mouth. It has been tiring to watching after the eager toddler but you wouldn’t trade it for the world. Four hours had passed by since his last bottle so you made him one while carrying him in the other hand.

“Let’s drink your milk and then we can play with your toys. Mumma’s not sleepy anymore.” The chocolate brown eyes that stared back at you with wonder reminded you of the man sleeping peacefully in the master room. It was only five in the morning and your day had already started.

“Morning, darling.” Rubbing his eyes, he walked downstairs to the source of all the commotion.

You looked up from your position on the carpet to see your husband approaching the both of you. He had just leaned into kiss you when you diverted your attention back to the toddler.

“Hey, mister! You can’t put that in your mouth.” Crying was the only thing heard after you took away the train from Oliver’s hands. You always sterlise his toys but you still don’t allow him to put them in his mouth. His tantrums were much like his dad; only you could console them. “Shhh. I got yeh, darling. Let’s go look at the plants, okay?”

“Wha- What?” Tom’s mouth opened and closed like a fish because he couldn’t believe what just happened. His son stole away his wife.

You always loved telling your son about Nature. Studies always showed that nature helps develop a child’s sensory organs so you made it a point to come to the garden with Ollie every morning. It was your little routine.

“(Y/N)! I can’t find my pink t-shirt. Please help me!”

“Just wear something else.” You hollered back while going inside the house.

“I want the pick one. Come up and help me.”

Rolling your eyes, you replied, “I’m feedin’ your son so just wear anything else.” Tom and his pink t-shirt.

A sad ‘okay’ echoed through the house and you chuckled slightly at his childish behavior. You sometimes really didn’t know who the baby was in this house. Feeding your son his mashed banana, you bathed him while Tom sullenly took out Oliver’s clothes.

When he was dressed up in his unicorn onesie, you gently laid him in his crib. Tom moved around the room to switch off the lights and turn the mobile on. It was time for his mid day nap so that meant you could finally take a shower and eat a proper meal.

“Come with me!” Your husband whispered right in your ears before dragging you out with your wrist.

“What happe-” You were cut off by his lips as he pinned you against the wall. It was shocking but you soon responded back. “What was that for?”

“That was my morning kiss that my son interrupted.”

“Awww. Is someone jealous?”

“I also need you, darlin’.” Hugging you tightly, Tom stuffed his face in your neck.

“You are my big baby and nothing will change that, Tommy.”

Pecking you on the cheeks, he started pulling you downstairs. “Let’s cuddle.”

“But I am all sweaty and covered in mashed bananas.”

“No!”

“At least, let me change my clothes.” It was like bargaining with a kid and he was sometimes more difficult than your actual child.

“Okay but no more than five minutes.”

You quickly went upstairs and pulled on the first shirt that you got your hands on. After adjusting your hair in the mirror, you realised that it was Tom’s pink t-shirt. He was going to be so mad when he finds out that you put it in your closet again. However, you didn’t care about that. The shirt was so soft that your husband would have to just suck it up.

“I knew it!” You laughed loudly at his exclamation and just laid on top of him on the couch.

“Keep quiet or you won’t get any cuddles.”

“Sorry, darling.”

The silence was weird after such a hectic morning but you enjoyed every second of it. Your son was sleeping and you could finally have some quality time with Tom. You both started talking about Tom’s new movie and before you knew it, you were asleep. Oliver really tired you out sometimes and Tom felt guilty for not helping out that much. He always wanted to do more but the little boy was attached to your hip and would scream bloody murder if he didn’t see you.

“Love, Ollie’s awake. Let me get up, please.” A gentle voice reached your eyes and you just slightly shifted on the couch. You were too tired to comprehend what he was saying.

“Hey, buddy. It’s just you and I for sometime. We should let mumma sleep for sometime.”

Seems like luck was on his side because Oliver wanted to snuggle up with his father for a change. You woke up after two hours of a very satisfying nap and instantly panicked when you saw it was three in the noon. However, you relaxed when you heard your husband and son’s voice from upstairs. They were both watching cartoons.

“Hey.” You first gave your husband a peck and then picked up your baby boy. He instantly snuggled into your chest.

“Don’t deserve you, darling.” When you looked into his eyes, there were slight tears. He always got emotional when he witnessed moments like these. It was truly an enchanting sight.

“I love you.”

“Love you too.” He hugged you both closer and you all watched as Tom kept running in circles chasing Jerry.

What's anti-intellectual is assuming anyone who doesn't say otherwise doesn't have a degree and assuming that degree = smart, which is very classist, not to mention very narrow-minded and eliteist. People who are also highly educated bring up your degree because you keep using it as a way to claim you're right and that your way is the only way, when this isn't true at all. All it takes is going to different professors' classes to realize there is no "right" way to analyze things. Also, if things are literally spelled out in text, there's no "two interpretations", there's a yes and a no. There literally are rights and wrongs sometimes, and just because you choose to ignore explicit canon doesn't make you right. Stop trying to claim people are anti-intellectual just because they don't agree with you/analyze things in a way you don't like lmao. It's incredibly telling that you assume people who don't agree with you aren't intellectuals/don't have degrees themselves, and that you are better at reading than people without degrees. Yikes, yikes, yikes.

Oh boy, okay, so I'm going to take this one bit at a time.

Anti-intellectualism isn't just some random phrase that I just made up. It doesn't mean what you just described it as. I didn't decide "hm, let's smush together 'intellectual' and 'anti' because I feel like it."

Anti-intellectualism is a whole phenomenon wherein people distrust authority or expertise or higher education. It is widely observable, currently very real problem considering issues like the pandemic and climate change. Here is a good description of anti-intellectualism:

Anti-intellectualism is "where people distrust and dislike experts and intellectuals because of a view that 'the plain sense of the common man….is an altogether adequate substitute for, if not actually much superior to, formal knowledge and expertise'" (Here is my source)

When I mentioned climate change deniers? Distrust in media? Not trusting scientists in general? Where do you think those examples came from, my asshole??? No, they were relevant to the discussion, to anti-intellectualism. I'm so curious what you think I was talking about, though 🤣

Here is another quote from that same source that explains another comment I made, about people not actually being anti-intellectual, but using its tenets because it's convenient for them to do so:

People tend to be persuaded by speakers they see as knowledgeable (that is, experts), but only when they perceive the existence of common interests. Some groups of citizens, such as ideological conservatives, populists, religious fundamentalists and the like, may see experts as threatening to their social identities.

I included the emphasis, because it proves what I was saying before, about it being an excuse to disagree with people because you just... don't want to agree with them.

What you are describing is something I have never done. I do not assume that people don't have education, or don't know things. In fact, that's why I didn't bother defining or describing "anti-intellectualism" before. I figure that my audience is either 1) smart enough to know what that means, or 2) smart enough to look it up if they don't. You'll notice that I rarely explain concepts like that, because I assume one of those two conditions to be true. That's the opposite of what you are accusing me of.

A doctor is better at understanding the human body. A plumber is better at understanding your pipes. A car mechanic knows how cars work better than I, an unlicensed bisexual. When I - or other people on this website - bring up our educations, it's to show expertise or credibility. Not to say we are right. The fact that you can't differentiate between someone saying "here is why I am credible" and someone saying "here is why I am right" is definitely a you problem. I can't help you if you don't understand the difference between those statements.

Ask yourself, anon (and the people inevitably stalking my blog 😘) if your bestie had a degree in literature, would you tell them to keep that quiet? In a book fandom? Are you going to trust your dentist to repair your tv? Or are you going to someone who knows what they're talking about?

The irony here is that anti-intellectualism does exactly what you did in your ask. Calling me elitist because I have an education that I worked my ass off for? I’m not going to reply to the original ask, it was a little too long (look, sometimes I am watching out for your guys’ dashes! 😂) and the quotes selected aren’t really relevant to the answer, because there are two things at play here: 1.  The big, thorny discussion of Star Wars “lore”.  Like, I cannot even begin to describe what a pain in the ass it is to try to set up the structure of a discussion--are we taking books written in 2010, before TCW was even finished, on the same level as GL’s commentary?  That’s not a snide question, it’s a genuine query about the structure of the discussion. (And it’s setting aside the question of whether or not to include word of god commentary at all, because it’s perfectly valid not to!  But this is a discussion about GL’s word of god commentary, so it’s going to include it.) 2.  Attachment is not the same thing as love or connection with others.  Attachment is the specific clinging, grasping inability to live without the other person for your sake, rather than for theirs.  It’s about your happiness at having them in your life, rather than them being happy.  It’s about how you would rather burn down the galaxy to keep them than you would rather live without them. Attachment absolutely is a path to the dark side, that’s explicitly stated by word of god commentary.  That’s just how it works in Star Wars.  A quote from Star Wars Archives:      “[Jedi Knights] do not grow attachments, because attachment is a path to the dark side. You can love people, but you can’t want to possess them. They’re not yours. Accept that they have a fate. Even those you love most are going to die. You can’t do anything about that. Protect them with your lightsaber, but if they die they were going to die, there’s nothing you can do. All you can do is accept that fact.      “In mythology, if you go to Hades to get them back you’re not doing it for them, you’re doing it for yourself. That’s why the Jedi forbid attachment, because it’s unhealthy and dangerous for them as space psychics and can hurt a whole lot of people.  What they don’t forbid is caring about people, loving people, even specific people.  I mean, nobody looks at Obi-Wan and Anakin in the movies or TCW, sees how they genuinely care about and love each other very specifically, and says that that’s bad or that they’re too close, their teaching system includes a specific Master and Apprentice combination that naturally lends itself to caring about that specific person and nobody ever says they’re not allowed or that it’s bad.  Even in ROTS, when Obi-Wan says he can’t kill Anakin specifically, Yoda doesn’t say that Obi-Wan shouldn’t care, but instead recognizes that care and says that Anakin’s gone.  He even tries to keep Obi-Wan from the pain of seeing the security footage because he knows Obi-Wan cares very much about Anakin specifically and never indicates that that’s an inherently bad thing. What they do say is that being a Jedi is a commitment on par with a marriage to this life and you can’t have two marriages, because you can’t be wholly committed to two things.  And you should be committed to your spouse, if you’re going to marry them!  You should be able to prioritize your life around them!  You should be able to make decisions based on your relationship with them!  But Jedi are put in situations where they have to be completely neutral and, if they fall prey to being willing to do anything to prioritize someone, then that can really hurt people. And this isn’t just romantic relationships, either!  For example:  In Master and Apprentice, Rael Averross has become attached to Princess Fanry, to the point that he doesn’t see her for who she really is, he’s willing to nearly fuck over literal millions of people, to disenfranchise them out of their ability to vote, because he wants Fanry to be happy, because his feelings about her (and his unresolved issues with the death of his Padawan) led him to prioritize her feelings over his duty.  And those people were counting on him to be responsible to them. The bio-families thing is separate from this discussion--for one, it’s putting biological relationships as the most important solely for being biological, like it doesn’t matter that the Jedi raised them as their family, it’s more important who their blood relatives are?  And, second, they do know that information, there’s a Jedi Knight who is perfectly well aware of their family in Heir to the Jedi. Or things like--where was it said in TCW or the movies that Anakin wasn’t allowed to talk to Shmi because the Jedi said no?  Yes, I’m aware that some Legends books say that, but that circles us back to, “Do you put a 2003 novel on the same level as George Lucas’ canon and commentary?  Are we discussing the relationship between GL’s commentary and the source material he created OR are we talking about how consistent other authors’ supplementary material is to GL’s commentary?” Ultimately, within the content that GL produced (the six movies + TCW), the Jedi are consistent with GL’s commentary about what attachment is and what it isn’t and how they act.  And sometimes supplementary material are not always going to be consistent with what GL put out, especially because GL himself was extremely clear that he wasn’t really super involved with the books and comics.
