Today (October 4) is Canada's National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
Indigenous women and girls are at a disproportionate risk for violence. Indigenous women are women are over-represented among Canada’s murdered and missing women. (They are also disproportionately incarcerated and involved in the sex trade.) This is a significant, persistent, and deliberate pattern of systemic racial and sex-based human rights violations.
Because Canada is Canada, the government decided to do an inquiry report to look into this crisis that we already knew was a crisis. This report called Canada's MMIWG crisis "genocide." This is neither exaggeration nor understatement.
Despite this report, and the concrete actions it listed that the government could take to address the MMIWG crisis, the Canadian government has taken only symbolic action to protect Indigenous women and girls nation-wide.
Because today is the day of action, here are some actions you can take.
First, educate yourself. Read the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Among the calls for justice in the report are eight actions all Canadians should take: "1. Denounce and speak out against violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people. 2. Decolonize by learning the true history of Canada and Indigenous history in your local area. Learn about and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ history, cultures, pride, and diver- sity, acknowledging the land you live on and its importance to local Indigenous communities, both historically and today. 3. Develop knowledge and read the Final Report. Listen to the truths shared, and acknowl- edge the burden of these human and Indigenous rights violations, and how they impact Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people today. 4. Using what you have learned and some of the resources suggested, become a strong ally. Being a strong ally involves more than just tolerance; it means actively working to break down barriers and to support others in every relationship and encounter in which you participate. 5. Confront and speak out against racism, sexism, ignorance, homophobia, and transpho- bia, and teach or encourage others to do the same, wherever it occurs: in your home, in your workplace, or in social settings. 6. Protect, support, and promote the safety of women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people by acknowledging and respecting the value of every person and every community, as well as the right of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people to generate their own, self-determined solutions. 7. Create time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings, supporting and embracing differences with kindness, love, and respect. Learn about Indigenous principles of relationship specific to those Nations or communities in your local area and work, and put them into practice in all of your relationships with Indigenous Peoples. 8. Help hold all governments accountable to act on the Calls for Justice, and to implement them according to the important principles we set out."
If you are Canadian, please write to your elected officials and demand that they act on the report's Calls for Justice. (Amnesty International provides some templates for letter writing: 1, 2, 3, 4)
If you are not Canadian, I would encourage you to write to your government and call on them to take formal action against Canada to make our government take action to protect Indigenous women and girls.
Please stop letting us get away with being 'the good guys' just because we're next to the States. The countless deaths and disappearances of Indigenous women and girls have not been enough to force Canadians to act. We need international backlash.
I encourage you to educate your friends and family on this issue. Too many Indigenous women and girls go without justice everyday.
(And because I know Tumblr is full of Americans and this isn't just a Canada problem, I'm linking this report on MMIWG in the US.)

Not putting this under a read more, but it is long!
I'm popping in really quick because I feel like it should go without saying that supporting and comforting people who are racists or engaging in racist behavior and microaggressions makes you a racist as well.
For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, this is an ongoing issue regarding some members in the sims community and their past actions. Here's some background info.
Ignoring the problem won't make the actions which hurt others and the hateful, racist speech you enabled go away. Changing your blog name won't make it go away, putting out a notes app apology (which you later delete) won't make it go away, and filling your blog with "aesthetically pleasing" black sims isn't going to make it go away. Additionally, I want people to understand that someone can't really be sorry for something they don't feel bad for - and when you ignore public outcry and frustrations and allow others to comfort you or defend your past actions, you are not sorry. If someone tells simopeia, for instance, "Don't worry about these people... it's just cancel culture" or "you did nothing wrong" and simopeia does not shut that down... then she's not really sorry. If you're sorry, truly sorry, you would never let anyone say that what you did wasn't wrong - clearly you're just upset people are calling you out for it.
Racists (and all their apologists) have got to take the time and not only admit wrongdoing but also unlearn that shit, too. Really, all white people should take the time and do the work of constantly learning and listening to the voices of POC on topics of racism and inequality simply because it's the right thing to do. Racist ideologies, racial biases, the damaging history behind white "victim" tears, and the concept of privilege are just a few topics to start with and you simply can't expect black people to hold your hand the whole way. You don't get to say "I didn't know better" while people are telling you that you did something wrong and while you were on the internet, on social media, meaning you had access to infinite information/news/resources/and educated perspectives regarding racial injustice at the time. I mean, shit, there's literally trending topics and sections on social justice issues just here on Tumblr alone. It is not any person of color's job to explain their own oppression or societal injustices in general for you, nor is it their job to up and accept your apology at the drop because you "feel so bad" or "regret your actions."
You do not get to be mad when people don't like you because of that, and you just have to accept that you will always be associated with that behavior for many. It's a consequence, but one you brought upon yourself.
"Then why be sorry? Why try to do better if people won't just forgive me?" Because the goal in educating yourself about racial injustice is not so you can feel better about yourself or be liked or forgiven by others, it's so you don't continue to contribute to systems which oppress people who aren't white. The key point in this kind of apology is to understand that you aren't apologizing for you, you're apologizing because that is what you owe to people you have wronged regardless if they choose to forgive you or not.
And I've seen all the complaints and the asinine anons so let me be very clear: this isn't drama, this is a very real problem that black simmers don't have the luxury to ignore. They don't owe silence, forgiveness, complacency, or niceties to anyone who makes an active choice to make simblr (and the world in general) an unwelcoming place.
All that being said, if you are racist, an apologist and front-line defender for racists, or simply don't see why these things matter... this is not the space for you, and I won't be sorry about that. Please see yourself out, no exit announcement necessary.

In Lieu of Twitter Going Dark
I wasn’t intending on doing this again on Tumblr, but given what could happen with Twitter, and people’s interests, I figured I would do a big charity thread for as much as I can fit in a post. I may have to split them into multiples, at which point I will edit this one to provide links to the others.
If you find this type of information important and want to learn about new charities (or submit others) I have a discord server that I will also link to in this to join. As always, the goal of this is to showcase places to donate your money or other resources to. Again, they might need more than money! Maybe they need a social media manager. Maybe they need someone else to offer rides or information. If you find yourself in a position to do something but you’re broke don’t let the money stop you.

Today in Black Excellence: Shirley Chisholm, the first African American—and the first woman—to seek nomination for President.
“I want history to remember me... not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of The United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and who dared to be herself. I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America.”
—Shirley Chisholm
Chisholm wanted to be remembered as a “catalyst for change.” What did she do?
Shirley Anita Chisholm was a politician, educator, and writer. There would be no Barack Obama or Kamala Harris without her—she was a trailblazer in every sense of the word.
Citing her “double-handicap” of being a Black woman, Chisholm initially rejected a political career but became increasingly engaged in fighting racial and gender inequality. She eventually joined the Democratic Party in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, winning a seat in the United States Congress in 1968, and becoming the first Black woman to do so.
What did she achieve in politics?
With a seat at the table, “Fighting Shirley” introduced over 50 pieces of legislation on behalf of the poor, protesting racial and gender inequality. She became a fierce critic of the Vietnam War when opposition to the war was considered radical. Her outspoken assault on injustice earned her few friends in the white political establishment.
While campaigning for the 1972 primaries, Chisholm was allowed only one speech in televised debates and was otherwise blocked from participation. Despite this, students, women, and minorities proved loyal supporters: In 12 primaries, she garnered 152 (10%) of delegates’ votes, despite a poorly financed campaign and widespread political hostility.
The 1972 primaries also displayed her remarkable character, when she chose to visit racist and segregationist Governor George Wallace of Alabama in hospital after a failed assassination attempt.
After retiring from Congress in 1983, Chisholm taught at Mount Holyoke College and co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women.
Original portrait by Tumblr Creatr @banana-peppers
“It was an honor to create a piece celebrating Shirley Chisholm. She was the first Black woman elected to Congress and to seek a major party nomination for presidency. Her trailblazing career is truly inspiring and I wanted to capture her power, her bravery and her magic. Her motto Unbought and Unbossed implores us to forge our own path no matter what obstacles try to stand in our way."

Today in Black Excellence: Maya Angelou—a literature titan whose 1969 memoir was the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman.
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” —Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
What was the early life of Maya Angelou?
She became a celebrated writer and Black icon, but it came from a childhood of tragedy. Born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, Angelou was quickly exposed to racism as a child. Her parents split when she was young, and while visiting her mother, aged eight, she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend: her uncles killed the boyfriend in revenge. These horrors left Angelou mute for five years, as she discussed in an interview with Oprah, a close friend. At age 16, she gave birth and was forced to work grueling jobs to support her son—including fry cook, sex worker, and nightclub performer.
She recounted her traumas to close friend James Baldwin—fellow writer and Black icon. He challenged Angelou to write about her experiences, and she published the wildly successful memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It catapulted Angelou to international stardom and was nominated for a National Book Award in 1970. It remained on The New York Times’ paperback nonfiction bestseller list for two years—the longest record in history.
What made her such a Black icon?
Angelou was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated on her birthday in 1968. Angelou stopped celebrating her birthday for years afterward. In 1964, Angelou helped another activist friend Malcolm X in founding the Organization of Afro-American Unity.
Spanning over 50 years, she published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, books of poetry, and plays. Her 1971 poetry collection, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ’Fore I Die, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Because of her tireless work in literature and political activism, Angelou became widely respected as a spokesperson for the Black experience, particularly of women. You can even find her legacy in your pocket—she recently became the first black woman to appear on a US quarter.
Original portrait by Tumblr Creatr @inuqo
"I was filled with such deep gratitude while working on this illustration of Maya Angelou. Her talent, creativity, strength, power and resilience is inspiring to us all and I wanted to display how beautiful her Universe was. How important her words and life's journey was because it showed us that no matter how hard we fall, still we can rise".”

Today in Black Excellence: Dapper Dan—the underground fashion icon who made history as the first Black designer to receive CFDA’s lifetime achievement award.
“I don’t give a damn about failure. I was born part of failure. We are the phoenix—all of us here in America, every black man, woman, and child are part of the phoenix, still rising from those ashes. All my life is about getting knocked down and getting back up. I don’t care. It’s fun!”—Dapper Dan.
What’s Dapper Dan’s story?
Born Daniel Day on August 8, 1944, in Harlem, New York City, into a working-class family. By 13, he was making thousands a day after teaching himself gambling. By the 70s, Dan first sold items out of his car, and in 1982, the iconic Dapper Dan’s Boutique had its grand opening —open 24/7.
Dan is self-taught—from his fabrics and leather printing, to his creations of unique textiles featuring Louis Vuitton and Gucci logos. His designs became synonymous with 80s hip-hop—but Dan was neglected by the fashion world, and his illegal use of major label logos led to police raids. Local attention became Global; European luxury fashion companies like Fendi caught wind and promptly took legal action. Dapper Dan’s Boutique was shut down in 1992. Ever the hustler, he continued working underground.
How did he come to win the CFDA award?
Ironically, to say the least, and on his own terms in true Dapper Dan style. Fans were outraged when they noticed Gucci steal one of his classic designs for a major show. The coat was first made for Olympian Diane Dixon, and she posted on Instagram: “Give Dapper Dan his credit. He did it first in 1989!” Incredibly, Gucci accepted its wrongdoing and sparked his career into new life when it offered a partnership.
At age 77, he made history as the first Black fashion designer honored with the CFDA’s Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also the first designer to receive the honor without ever doing a solo fashion show. Truly the epitome of Black excellence.
Original portrait by Tumblr Creatr @patiencelekienart
There’s a quote by Faith Cummings that says, “We still struggle to garner a seat at the table. Even though we’ve oft built the table ourselves.” As a Black Creative, this is a reality many of us face. And Dapper Dan is a modern representation of just that—Black Excellence. He exemplifies how and why our contributions to culture often define culture. It was an honor dedicating this piece to him, as an extension of my gratitude and appreciation for the path he has paved for all Black Creatives. Thank you Dapper Dan.

Writeblr Intro
(Take 1,792)*
Hi, writers of Tumblr! I thought I'd try this again since every other time has been... Not great lol. Mostly my doing, but I think I've figured it out.
Aurthor name: Rebecca/R. K. Fisher
Age: 28
Pronouns: She/her
Writing From: Cleveland, Ohio USA
Sexual Orientation: Labels have never worked for me, but I'm married to a wonderful person ❤️
Educational Background: Bachelor's Degree following English and Wiring (2016), 36 Credit Hours of a Master's of Library and Information Science Degree (left in February 2019). Now considering an MFA ccuuzzz why not add more to my student loan debt 🙃🙃🙃
Genre: Young Adult/New Adult Speculative Fiction & Short Stories
Most Common Theme in Books: Social Justice/Social Commentary
Published: "The Basement" in The Monsters We Forgot, Vol II (2019), "Canary" in What Monsters Do For Love, Vol I (2020), Devil In the Details (2022)
Non-writing: We do cat rescue in our neighborhood and might start posting pictures of the critters that come to us for help from time to time. Depending on the cost of care it might be in the form of a GoFundMe so reblogging is much appreciated!
Current WIPs:
Mercenary of the Stars: a New Adult novel featuring lesbian space pirates breaking up a human trafficking ring made up of Earth migrants and sponsored by society's wealthy elite. (Hoping to traditionally publish)
Firavanna: A Young Adult/New Adult novel about a young Earl from a fallen family trying to solve the murder of the girl he was supposed to marry - if only her ghost was more helpful. (Indie publisher)
Heir of Rot & Ruin: a Young Adult novel following 16-year-olf Charlie Harris and her friends as they work together to get back the children and babies stolen by the mysterious Court of Salt and Brine - and banish them from Belfast, Maine for good if possible. (Self-publish)
Song of the Autumn Court: a New Adult novella about a girl who always thought the fact that her mother was taken by faeries was a tragedy until she discovers the real monsters might be in her village. (Self-publish)
... and a whole bunch of short stories (mixed publishing).
I guess that's about it for me! I spend a lot of time on Tumblr reblogging aesthetic pictures of nature and animals that inspire me and bring me joy and I hope they do the same for you! I'll also share some political/current event commentary (I am a leftist/progressive) and write the occasional blog post. Tumblr is my only social media platform now so I'll also be announcing project updates and book-releases. I will happily help promote other writer's works, too!❤️
NOTE TO FELLOW WRITERS: As you can see I've written a lot and been writing for a long time, so if you're new to writing or want tips or feedback on your latest project, please reach out! I don't know if I'll have time to beta-read a full book but will certainly do what I can to help guide you through the process of finishing it.
Thanks, all! See you online ☺️
P.S.: I've always wanted to do a Write-With-Me Livestream either on YouTube or Twitch where a bunch of writers join me either on stream or in the chat in writing a sort of ad-libbed story together. When I proposed it during my time on Twitter it went down in flames but I thought maybe this community would like to try it. If so, let me know by commenting, reblogging or DMing me! Writing is lonely work and it might help us all feel a little more connected if there was a way we could do it together.

Since I didn't update Tumblr in this one.
Thursday I woke up with a strong thought and I made a decision: I'm looking for a new job, this one can go to hell. My ADHD hate it. It's repetitive, my inner sense of justice makes it harder when everyone acts like cleaning service are slaves, colleagues are simple and I don't have anything in common with them, so socializing is frustrating also
I told my boss about it and she took it really well. Like normal. "Okay, thank you for letting me know, please update me because I have to look for replacement"
I was so overjoyed I told my colleague and she on the other hand lost it. She started to yell at me for being responsible and don't even joking like that. That January will bring crisis on job market and I will regret that, that I don't think about my future.
Not to insult cleaning service, but how is this future for a woman with higher education and passion for learning.
This colleague is mother of two, 40 yo, loans take her whole payment, she needs to work 12 hours per day. I don't think it's something I should aspire to, I think it's something I feel sorry for. But then again she bought brand new flat in economy crisis.
Anyway back to the situation. She told one more colleague and they both started to gaslighting me into "think about the future" "you can't keep fucking around what about retainment money" "what when you'll meet the man of your life and want to move out with him and you'll be out of cash??" (In this crisis lol) and the best "where will you find so cool colleagues as us?? Aren't we a team??"
No, I will find them anywere and I know you for two months, we are not friends.
Any explanation why I hate this job was meeting with lack of understanding and at the end when I told them I don't have time for myself because I think about the job entire morning (we are working everyday 14-22) their remedy was to work even more so I will be busy. "What are you doing at the morning anyway?? Your brother can do all the householding instead of you!" "Well I won't be able to do this" "bullshit i could do it for 10 years"
She was treating me like an idiot, I lost it and slammed door and left 😅 in front of teachers, parents and kids but well.

hey! I liked your piece about the twitter spreadsheet. I generally agree with your observations and conclusions but I'm additionally concerned about the internet dogpiling it's received recently—a problem in its own right. were you aware the list was by a 20 year old girl? and that she clarified she's not saying no one should read them/they should be censored; her intentions were more along the lines of awareness-raising.
obviously she's echoing the "ur fave is problematic" tumblr trends, which I agree are an offshoot of puritanism cloaked in pseudo-leftist terminology, and the reasons on her list are mostly dumb and badly-written. but she's also 1 young person doing this (on what she thought was an account with only a few hundred booktwt followers) when i think lovers of books and literature everywhere still have a lot of reckoning to do with the systemic issues in fiction. wish we could've collectively just not given her list oxygen, because now she's gone viral, doubling down, getting harassed, and locking her account, which seems worse than having a 20-year-old social justice performance phase and then just... maturing out of it like a lot of people.
so yes she's wrong, but twitter (+ the rest of the internet) has gotten so outraged about her list when often the same communities don't do enough about very real issues of racism in fiction, or transphobia in fiction, or other minorities expressing their discomfort. it seems to me like she's just become the internet's scapegoat for channeling all the frustration in the air about purity culture's resurgence towards one lone target.
[on a slight tangent, she was not wrong about rainbow rowell—her books contain suuuuuuper weird depictions of mixed-race people to the point that i, a mixed-race asian, have asked friends not to read her. it's absolutely an individual's choice if they still want to, but that doesn't mean it has my enthusiastic approval solely in the name of anti-censorship sentiment. i just think her books are weird, hurtful, and unhelpful.]
originally i was going to delete this since i didn't have the time or energy to engage since it seems like you just want to vent, but y'know what i will dignify this with a response.
1. yes i'm aware of the op's age. i saw the original tweet when it was posted and checked out her account. i would not have cross-posted the spreadsheet let alone written about it were she 14 or 16. that's punching down on a child. op is, by her own metric since her age no longer has 'teen' in it, an adult. at twenty, the vast majority of the population is either involved with higher education or working, both of which require you to move in adult spaces as an adult yourself whether you feel like one or not. op is 20, i am 25; we are on equal footing in this scenario.
2. nowhere in my piece do i say that she directly calls for censorship of books deemed problematic
3. upfront i am not criticizing her for going viral in an internet safety psa way. however, there are means of limiting who can and cannot interact with your tweets even if you have a public facing account.
3.5. the nature of creating something with the intent to 'educate and spread awareness' is that you post it hoping that other people will see it and go 'oh, i should circulate that through my circles so that my friends can also be educated and aware', and then it continues spreading. that's how the transfer of information works, it's unfortunate that it snowballed the way it did because i saw a bunch of big accounts on my timeline being rude about it
4. in my posts here and my piece i specifically obscured her identity to avoid further harassment and dogpiling
4.5. nowhere in my piece do i make any personal attacks on her character. i say her choice of criticisms are "weird", mention the typos (because if you're going to post a call out the least you can do is get people's names right), say the whole thing is well-intentioned but silly, and call her methodology "ridiculous" & critique the spreadsheet as a symptom of the larger trend of tiktok gen z anti-intellectualism
5. "the same communities don't do enough about very real issues of realism in fiction, or transphobia in fiction" this was like....one of my main arguments in the piece, that deplatforming virgina woolf or ayn rand won't do anything (well... deplatforming rand may, if we can get rid of libertarians) but authors like jkr and helen oyeyemi are still doing active harm without widespread reproach. i was glad to see that oyeyemi was even on the list and upset that the transphobia in one of her books was getting sidelined in favour of making fun of the typos. that's something i highlighted in both my piece and a subsequent reblog of the post i made about the spreadsheet.
6. the modus operandi of being like "hello i saw a [tweet/post/video/photo etc] about X, which is an example of issue Y, let's talk abt it' is not something i made up. this is no different than if we were feuding shakespeare scholars duking it out via academic journals
7. nowhere in my piece do i say that she is the only example of the issues i'm talking about. i say that it's part of a larger trend, and it is. the spreadsheet is a very visible example of discussion that i have seen on various social medias, among my own social circles, and regurgitated by published ya authors and grown-ass adults
Tumblr media
additionally, this website has several pages dedicated to problematic authors, many of whom also appear on the spreadsheet. the website is correctly spelled, alphabetized, and cited, but also listed tacitus as a code-red problematic author which, like, tacitus's histories and the antisemitism rampant in those histories are integral to the way we study western history and historiography. he was also born in 56 CE. i think he's been cancelled and analysed plenty in 2000 years.
8. tacitus tangent aside, i would like to stress that neither this account nor my twitter, on which i also posted in response to the spreadsheet and which has less than 200 followers, are Big Accounts. there is a world of difference between a blue check journalist writing the same article, with her name and handle left in, and getting a substantial sum for it. the platform i publish most of my writing on pays 1¢ approximately every 12 views. my post popular article has been read about 2000 times and earned $12. thank you for your time goodbye

just read your post on what lewis said about his trip to africa, and while i get where everyone is coming from, i think it’s reaching a bit🤷🏻‍♀️
it’s 100% true that a lot of African culture is looked at as less good than western, however, i think the fact that so many people are mad at lewis for what he said, just shows that there are too many people on social media, who are chronically online
Hello anon!! This is a difficult answer to give, you know. I will assume it isn't an attack toward me, why should you, so i will speak frankly and calmly. Earlier i explained why what he said was wrong, i was asked that. that said understanding certain concepts requires time and energy not everyone has or is willing to have. If they are not willing to have it then it is to condemn. Lewis' case is different. He is willing to improve and to change, that's why, and i specified it on the post too, i think it's really a big ass fucking up, but not something worthy of the crucifying process social media usually does. And for less than selfless reasons, really. I have no other social media than tumblr, but i imagine ppl on twitter waiting like vultures for the first mistake to attack him fiercely in order to make themselves and their faves better. But i don't think that after all social media talks matters, it is useful just for ppl to fight against each other, almost never for letting a message go through a celebrity. As for the acting surprised part, well, personally i wasn't surprised either, because it's something that u could expect easily if you have a grasp of how real life works. Like this is a 'disappointed but not surprised' situation. However what matters is that we believe in good faith mistakes and on willingness to improve. And that yes, he might never be aware of what he said bcs he is surrounded by likewise mentalities. What matters, often, is the intention and frankly, i do believe it was good. Like, i don't believe there is anyone who thinks his intention was malicious, especially since all the hype he created on this trip. That said, it's fair to say 'call him out' (what big words) not for him to understand, because the fact that these words reach out to him is so absurd rhat it's unthinkable. It's right to do so for the people who surround us and to spark a discussion. To educate ourselves through others if necessary, whether for criticism or something else. Slogan-like posts are a bit out of reality like you say, but a developed answer can be of great use, and that's why i answered earlier at the best of my possibilities, for sure not to look like a paladin of justice.

I've been going over on how to write this tens of times in my head, and afraid to post this even more. I am still unsure about it.
I was hoping to avoid this as this platform was supposed to be a safe space of writing and escapism for me, that has nothing to do with politics and the likes, but when things hit home—they hit hard.
Let me start off by saying that I am physically safe. Mentally, I am not okay. Have not been since the beginning of all of this on October 7.
My heart goes out to all innocent victims, on both sides.
I long for the day we see the kidnapped come back home, all of them, safe and sound.
When you make claims and shout slogans that you do not understand regarding Israel, Gaza and/or Palestine, when you use about bombastic terms and proclamations without realizing the full destructive nature of their meaning, when you relog posts about "genocide", "ethnic cleansing" and more alike that are clearly uneducated and debasing, you are not doing yourself, your agenda or anyone else any justice.
You are being part of the problem.
For me and my mental health and safety, I have unfollowed and/or blocked users who post such content. I want to keep my dashboard safe for me to browse through.
Educate yourself first. Especially on facts (people seem to have forgotten how much those matter). There are great resources from professionals and academics out there that do a spectacular job at explaining things much better than I ever can.
Read articles and books, watch videos, learn the history of both past and current events, listen to witness interviews and first hand accounts, ones unbiased or skewed by news and political agendas. CHECK YOUR RESOURCES. Tumblr, X, Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and Tiktok are great social media platforms to spread information, but if you rely solely on mass culture and viral posts to educate you, you are insulting your intellect. Even then, do not expect to fully comprehend the gravity of the situation when you are not here experiencing it first hand. War is hell, and the best weapon you can wield is knowledge and education.
Whichever side you pick after you do all that is your own. And it's okay to not pick a side too; this whole topic can get complicated, traverse and messy and it extends far beyond Israel, Gaza or Palestine. You are not obliged to speak up and you are not a bad person if you choose to stay quiet. You do whatever makes you feel safe on this platform.
If you do choose to speak up, check yourself and the content you post and reblog so freely before doing it. Don't try to be a keyboard hero with minimal or zero knowledge about what you post about. Don't lend a hand to the spread of misinformation. Stay informed and form your own opinion based on facts and research, not on viral opinions formed for you from half truths. Nuance and complexity seem to have lost meaning in this social media age, but don't be fooled—not everything that goes viral is true.
Please note that this is a PERSONAL post of update and it is NOT meant for reblogging, external use or anything else alike without my explicit permission.
You are more than welcome to unfollow or block me if you do not wish to see my content or talk to me anymore, as I have the right to do the same.
Stay safe out there. Stay educated.
Love and appreciate all of you, and thank you for taking the time to read this.

I’ve always been progressive, like ultra leftist progressive by US standards, right? I considered myself a communist and a feminist by the time I was in, like, middle school. But I was also, and I didn’t know this at the time, a class reductionist. And I wasn’t, like, super on board with the budding social justice movement of the time and let me tell you that a huge part of it was just misunderstandings because most people aren’t very good at explaining.
But it was weird because, again, I was super progressive. I’ve always believed in universal healthcare, the universal right to an abortion, I never denied that racism, misogyny, etc existed and were systemic problems. But there were a few things in my way, those being: that I thought that all of those problems could be solved by communism, that I was dealing with a lot of internalized racism, misogyny, and queerphobia, and that I was on tumblr and friends with “SJWs” who were really horrible at explaining things and didn’t seem to actually understand super well themselves. And also because it is unavoidably difficult to be so critical of every aspect of your worldview.
And I absolutely was listening to marginalized voices the way I was supposed to, right? I really thought that I was “educating myself.” But there were issues there too. For one, transmedicalism was incredibly popular at that time and that was about all I could find and I didn’t really buy into that. And then also not everyone, marginalized or not, is good at explaining themselves! I’d see someone say something like “makeup is racist,” which is just going to sound really wild and inflammatory to a lot of people, with no explanation of what they mean! Now I can extrapolate what you might mean by that, I can catch your drift, but that’s just not going to work for, like, most people. It actually does require thorough explanation because systemic oppression, by nature of being systemic, is so naturalized, so mythologized that it tends to disappear from view.
And at some point I even became aware that my worldview was racist, misogynistic, queerphobic, fatphobic, ableist, etc. And I felt really awful about it and I even talked to my therapist (who is not a white person who was just going to assuage my guilt) about it. And she helped me work through my internalized racism, misogyny, queerphobia, etc.
But what it took for me to actually go full on hard left social justice was talking to my therapist and learning about the mechanisms and mundane functioning of oppression. I started, like, doing actual research and reading theory and listening to marginalized people who are activists and not just regular degular people, etc. And then I literally made social justice my life’s work, like I literally became an intersectional feminist scholar.
And oddly enough, it was the more radical perspectives and explanations that worked for me. I had listened to transmedicalists and that didn’t make sense to me, “born in the wrong body” didn’t make sense to me, but radical trans acceptance did make sense. It made more sense once I understand, actually understood gender as a social construct. It took radical fat acceptance, a radical understanding of race, a radical understanding of disability, of gender, of religion, of colonialism, etc.
But that kind of radical thinking requires so much learning, in depth conversations, being uncomfortable, and most of all it takes good, thorough explanations and patience. And you might say that if it took that much then maybe I’m a bad person because it shouldn’t have been so hard. But let me tell you it didn’t feel that hard and it felt like it happened over night, because once I developed that kind of critical eye I was seeing and understanding more and more really rapidly. It just does take that kind of work to really understand and to understand enough that you don’t have to be reconvinced from scratch with every social justice issue you encounter because you’re only ever giving people surface level acceptance (this is why lots of USians are totally on board with settler colonial police state violence against Palestinians but totally against police brutality faced by Black and brown folks in the US, or why some people are totally cool with binary trans people but not NBs).
So, I guess my point is really that people can absolutely be “redeemed” and made into leftists, and we as tumblr leftists tend to eschew actual, in-depth, radical understanding in favour of platitudes and surface level acceptance. And I also feel like, on tumblr, even when former problem people are rehabilitated and reformed we tend not to believe that they’ve changed. Like, I wonder how many people would think that I’m, like, faking or virtue signaling or looking for praise because I went from a class reductionist to an queer intersectional feminist chicana studies social justice person. But the reality is that I was never that far off in the first place, and a lot of the issues I had with internet social justice then are the same issues I have with it now. And I do think it’s genuinely useful to know what people used to think and what changed their minds.
And idk, I can sort of understand why you’d be skeptical of someone like me. Like, yeah, why did it take me so long and so much work to *just* respect people? But that’s also a really reductionist way of seeing it I think. Like, of course it took that much! Of course I had to learn how to respect people, look at the world we live in! It seemed so normal to be awful, and even then I thought people should be treated better I just didn’t fully understand how because I didn’t grasp how certain groups are treated so badly in the first place. Nobody told me, and I’m not that smart. Maybe you’re so brilliant that you just popped out of the womb understanding systemic injustice and you’ve never had to read Frantz Fanon, but I’m not that brilliant. I had to be taught and I had to sit in it and be uncomfortable and cry and grapple with my place in an unjust system.

Maybe I'll go into more detail on this later but I was in class last week and we were talking about how to incorporate social justice into our pedagogy and curriculum as math teachers (because there's a lot of people who think social justice doesn't belong in the math classroom and should be left to the social studies teachers and those people would be wrong)
So we were looking at the development of racial identity and how it's impacted by education because education is currently built on a lot of structures that stem from white supremacy and we were looking at a framework that lays out a lot of the cultural features of white supremacy and uh...
Let me just say that a lot of "cancel culture" and the anti mentality is really, disturbingly aligned with the cultural facets of white supremacy, and I don't think it's coincidental.
This is the pdf that our field instructor gave us to give us a foundation to build our discussion on: link to pdf.
This isn't to say that everyone who ascribes to these ideologies of cancel culture or antis is a white supremacist. I'm not making any statements on anyone's motivations or intentions here.
I just want to say that it's important to educate yourself on these things, because it's very easy to go into something with good intentions and find those who want to take advantage of that.

Black Lives Matter
Last week we reacted with feeling. This week we’re channeling that feeling into fuel for action.
The ongoing protests against police brutality are not just a response to the unnecessary deaths of a few. They are a response to 401 years of racism. The unequal treatment of BIPOC was built into the blueprint of the United States, and we still see the indirect and direct consequences of that fact.
Tumblr has a moral obligation to our community to use this platform in a socially responsible manner. Staying silent about our solidarity with the police brutality protests last week was not an option. Simply spreading our message of solidarity without actionable follow-up this week was not an option, either.
What Tumblr is doing
Diversity and inclusion will remain an ongoing open and honest conversation within our company. This week we have come together as an organization to make sure the necessary conversations are being held. Dialogue is great, but action is needed.
Hate speech is not allowed on Tumblr. That sort of hateful rhetoric leads to violence. White supremacists, Nazis, and other purveyors of hate can fully fuck off. They are not welcome here. As we promised last month, hate speech will not go unchecked. If you see hate speech, report it to our Trust & Safety team. They will remove all content against our Community Guidelines.
Tumblr is a platform. The small team of <200 employees behind Tumblr are people. People who are scared, hopeful, angry, sad, and impassioned. People who care. As individuals, many of us are marching, protesting, and donating. We wanted to share some of the places we’ve donated to over the last two weeks in the hopes that you’ll check them out yourselves:
Color of Change demands justice and equality for Black people in the United States.
Black Girls Smile is dedicated to providing young Black women with mental health resources.
Equal Justice Initiative works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality.
Homeless Black Trans Woman Fund provides Black trans women in Atlanta with housing, food, and necessities.
Our social advocacy team is seeking more activists to do Issue Times on issues that affect the Black community. So often, the best suggestions come from all of you. Let us know who you want to hear from. As always, we will read the reblogs from this post.
Our official Tumblr for all things social advocacy, @action, will continue to reblog posts from the community on more ways to help support the protests.
Ways we can all help
Over the years, the Tumblr community has solidified itself as being passionate advocates for social justice. Through your posts, group chats, and messages, you educate yourself and others. If you’re not Black, commit to being a better ally. Listen to the Black community.
Last week @theblackoutofficial collected a nice list of resources here on Tumblr. You can stay further informed by following the Black Lives Matter, BLM, and protests tag.
There is a place for everyone in the Black Lives Matter movement. You may be unable to march or attend rallies, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit on the sidelines. You can pass out water, masks, and hand sanitizer if you can’t march. You can donate to a charity you believe in or give money to your local mutual aid organization.
Contact your officials to encourage our communities to invest in areas we know can prevent crime before it even happens: youth services, education, adequate housing, trauma services, counseling, and restorative justice programs. You can use these easy pre-filled form emails for a number of cities.
Just yesterday, U.S. House and Senate leaders introduced the Justice in Policing Act of 2020. This legislation may work to hold police accountable for their actions. We’re watching the developments of this closely, and suggest you do, too. Call your senators and call your representatives to support this legislation.
Are you an artist of any kind? Or do you just like art? There are tons of artists on Tumblr who are doing commission fundraisers for charities that have an impact on Black communities. Consider buying something or starting one yourself.
Lastly: Vote!
Vote! Vote! Register to vote! Even if you missed the deadline for upcoming elections, register to vote now so you can participate in the next one. You deserve to have a say in what happens within your community.

In Lieu of Twitter Going Dark Pt. 5

Just a quick statement in case anyone was wondering where I have been/will be. I've been taking, and will continue to take, a short Tumblr break until the SCU (Sebastian Cancellation Universe) wears itself out and goes on hiatus. I deleted Tumblr off my phone a few days ago and realised immediately that all this vicious, misinformed discourse pretty much solely exists on here and twitter, and if I want to avoid it, I can simply remove myself from the space.
I'm certainly not going to be gone forever - the head Canceller has made it quite clear that her sole intention was to "bully Sebastian off the internet", and presumably his fans too, while using POC and social issues as pawns/collateral damage. To quit the fandom feels like letting them win, but taking a break feels necessary at this point.
I like to listen to others who have different perspectives and value their opinions - but at the end of the day, I form my own and do my own research. And so far, I have seen absolutely nothing to change my opinion that Sebastian is a kind and well meaning man who sometimes doesn't think through every conceivable perspective before his does something - in other words, a flawed human. I'm not going to call for the end of a man's career and/or life, or withdraw my support of him, because 4 years ago he (accidentally, for all we know) liked a video of a man being called out for rapping the N-word and being told to censor himself, or because he smiled weird next to a statue while playing a Buddhist character. We can criticise him for his own actions, but these are willfully disingenuous interpretations specifically designed to harm not just him, but also POC fans who look up to him. I won't let myself be lied to, gaslighted, or dragged into a herd mentality. A disturbing number of people are not actually angry at him, but are simply scared of being harassed if they dare to question what they're being told or form their own opinions, so join the herd. The pursuit of the moral highground is addictive but futile, and you lose it as soon as you stoop to bullying, abuse, harassment, stalking and running dedicated, deranged hate accounts.
I'm not going to cancel him for a handful of bad jokes or mistakes made years ago that have been profusely apologised for and learnt from, either, and I'm not going to cancel him because of the years old actions of people he is associated with that he had nothing to do with. This isn't fair, proportional or helpful, at all. It's not activism, and it's not social justice - in fact, the constant malicious attempts to cancel him are only making it harder for him to see legitimate criticism or respond without setting a precedent that death threats will get his attention and a grovelling apology for things he didn't say and views he doesn't hold.
If your whole life was on tape and available to comb through with the worst intentions, and you weren't hiding behind anonymous accounts, I could construct equally terrible narratives from every bad joke, misspoken word, ill thought out comment, accidental like, dubious friend, mistake, genuinely hurtful moment or show of ignorance that you have ever made, but apologised for, grew from and forgot about instantly. You have that right: but you don't grant it to him, because he isn't truly a human being to you. So many of the blatantly and demonstrably false accusations I have been seeing would have been dispelled through the most basic level of fact checking and critical thinking, but through herd mentality and what I can only describe as moral bloodlust, they've gained serious, dangerous traction.
For someone who was raised in a deeply insular, conservative, traditional, orthodox environment, he has done a genuinely excellent job of freeing himself from that cycle of ignorance and using his platform in a positive way, as well as responding when he genuinely has misstepped. He will likely never be on the same level of educated/woke as a ~25 year old American who was literally raised knee deep in social justice twitter discourse, because he didn't have that privilege, but we are all on a journey and progress is not linear or with a clearly defined end.
The ironic thing is: the current state of the fandom is a direct result of how nice and willing to listen and learn Seb has been! The level to which he used to engage with fans and respond to criticism and feedback has created an expectation that he will ask how high whenever he is told to jump, and if he doesn't respond to every little thing, this means he doesn't care or hates us. His willingness to own up to mistakes, apologise and grow publically has created the strange idea that if he's not doing something publically, it's not happening, as if he only exists while we can see him, like social media peekaboo. His openness and willingness to act on criticism of those in his social and professional circles has led to the belief that we can demand he cut anyone we dislike out of his life immediately instead of helping and supporting them in making amends and learning, if only we can dig up some old dirt on them. It's entitled, parasocial nonsense. This is a total stranger who owes us nothing, is not actually accountable to us, does not have to ever respond to us or meet our demands, and has a complex and private inner life that we ultimately know nothing about.
I feel immensely sorry for the fans, especially POC, who have been wrongly led to believe that Seb hates or is discriminatory towards them on the basis of lies, hyperbole and some serious reaching. I feel deeply sorry for Seb's friends and family, who have been subject to an enormous amount of abuse and harassment (much of which has been racist, sexist, bodyshaming, xenophobic and cruel in nature - all in the name of social justice?) merely for being friends with him, and who recently had to see #RIPSebastianStan trending. Mostly, I feel immensely sorry for Sebastian, who has not been allowed the same basic rights everyone else in the world gets: the right to learn and grow, the right to forgiveness and freedom from harassment, and the right to be judged on things that *you* actually *did* rather than fictional narratives.
I cannot imagine the mental toll thousands of people calling for your death must take. I cannot imagine how it feels to have hate accounts dedicated to abusing you and critiquing your every move, and that of everyone you love. I cannot imagine the impact of obsessive doxxing, stalking and harassment. I cannot imagine all of this happening when you have been quite open about your mental health issues and serious struggles. There are truly only so many messages telling you to kill yourself that you can take, and I just hope he has people in his corner to remind him who he truly is and what he truly stands for.

What picture are people on Twitter getting mad at Darren for??
this is beneath the cut because it got really long (sorry) and there are also trigger warnings for mentions of police brutality.
I honestly couldn’t find it if I tried because I deleted Twitter a while ago, and wouldn’t know how to Google it, but it’s basically a picture of him pretending to having sex with one of his friends who looks like he may or may not be sleeping? I saw the picture once, and I honestly couldn't tell, but it looked like he could be awake??? and Twitter is losing its fucking mind calling him a “rapist” and shit like that and demanding he apologize for a picture he didn’t even post! (His friend posted it)
Is it his most tasteful picture? No, but from what I understand it’s like seven years old and also clearly a joke??
I have a lot of qualms with cancel culture (it’s the reason Jenna Marbles left YouTube so I’m mad about that lol) but the biggest thing is that on Twitter, it never seems to be about actually educating people for the better, or a real pursuit of social justice. It’s always this race to be the most visibly “holier than thou” “politically correct” (which, if you ask me, sometimes goes so far left they make a circle and come around back to the right. Looking at you, misogynists who want to police what content (queer) women can and cannot consume). Their political justice pursuits never seem to be based on actually caring. And if it is, it’s just for attention.
For example, Darren recently apologized for a tweet some (and I will also say, most of the people demanding the apology were not black.) thought was racist or racially insensitive. When he replied to one of the loudest voices on Twitter who called for an apology, the person running the account subsequently tweeted shit like “omg he knows I’m alive” and talked about being in their “Darren notice” era.
Something similar happened yesterday and days before, when Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all charges for the murder of George Floyd. (Which even then, people would say things like “I’m so glad he was convicted” and assholes would reply: “so you’re glad a black man died?”)
Darren tweeted: “✊🏼”
That’s it, that’s the fucking tweet. And then people started demanding he delete it, and the other half demanding he apologize for it and calling him a “white supremacist”. (Which pisses me off even more because... Despite the fact that. He’s not fucking entirely white?? BUT I DIGRESS!!!)
Apparently, a white fist in the air is a symbol of white supremacy, and people were tweeting shit like “I’m so disappointed in you” “how can you stan him after something like this?” “I’m so disgusted” blah blah fucking blah.
First off, if you don’t know enough about Darren to know that he’s not a fucking white supremacist? God I don’t even know how to finish that lmao.
Second, if your breaking point is a god damn emoji, you need to get the fuck off the internet. Whenever I use the fist in the air emoji to show my solidarity for the BLM movement, I don’t use a black fist. Because I’m not fucking black. I use this one: ✊🏽 because I’m mexican. I’m brown (okay so I’m a little less brown since quarantine but give me a day in the sun and the melanin will come back my dudes). Darren is not black, he’s tan, so he used a tan fist to show his solidarity and I think the reaction from glee Twitter was honestly gross and disgusting and awful because guess what: you are taking attention away from the fact that Derek Chauvin, the murderer of a black man, was convicted, AND that a black child was murdered by the police, to yell at a Filipino-Irish man that he’s a white supremacist.
(I beleive he deleted the tweet and then people were calling him a coward for not owning up to it. so he truly cannot win lmao)
That’s where the fucking picture comes in. I could be wrong, because I only get bits and pieces from a group chat I’m in and I’m not actually on the site anymore, but after the emoji tweet is when the picture was dug up. A years old picture that he didn’t even post, just to incite more hate and pretentiousness and senseless polarization???
If you're so "dissapointed" and "disgusted" in him, then fucking leave. Go. Don't stan someone whose morals you so vocally don't agree with. You no NOT have to be a fan of someone who supposedly causes you so much distress.
I also never thought of it before a friend I met this summer pointed it out, but why do we act like celebrities have to be held to a higher moral standard than everyone else? Why are they not allowed to make mistakes, and learn and grow like the rest of us? Because they act or sing??? Lord knows I was ignorant as fuck in 2011 and it fucking SHOWS in my old posts and shit. The only difference is that I didn't have thousands of people watching my every move.
Like fuck. No wonder he never goes on social media anymore. I wouldn't either. i can't imagine how fucking overwhelming and anxiety inducing that is. Let him fucking breathe.
It’s stupid. It’s all stupid. I actually felt like I was having my brain fried on that app. No thank you, I’ll leave it to slow cook like a roast in crock pot here on tumblr thank you very much.
TL;DR: Twitter is up in arms about an old picture of Darren pretending to have sex with his friend and I don’t trust anything Twitter says anymore because everything on there is for clout.
