every gay friend group has: the repressed academic, the ska loving "brawn", the formerly mean girl psychic, the match making anime fan, the astrology lover, the lesbian butcher/reluctant big sister, the sexy cat with nine lives, the walrus who runs a magic shop and the local witch who wants to kill everyone

This post came back up in my notes and it made me think about Bryce. Because I think that, on the surface, Bryce seems to embody some of these traits, and yet I cannot stand her. Why?
I think it's because when Bryce acts confident, when she makes decisions, when she does her scheming, she's doing it at people, rather than because she truly believes in herself and what she's doing. Bryce feels sexy and wears want she wants to wear, but it's often a knee-jerk reaction to the people around her - it's to spite them, rather than it being what she truly wants.
I've said this before, but Bryce lacks a central belief system. She doesn't value anything. Her doing the right thing at certain points is because she feels like she has to, not because it aligns with any bigger personal goal, not because it involves any of her personal values. Mainly because she has none other than "is this what makes me happy right at this moment". She doesn't care about humans, she doesn't care about fae, she talks shit about her job, she doesn't keep in contact with her friends very well, she treats Hunt like crap when he tries to tell her he is suffering and has reservations. Bryce is the embodiment of a teenage fucking eyeroll.
This is an entirely different issue, but if the whole point of her character was to show that women can be cute and have fun and also be smart and courageous, CC absolutely failed at that because when we take away Bryce's party princess persona, we are left with... nothing.
It doesn't help that the narrative is constantly shoving Bryce in our face - we are constantly told that she is queenly and a badass and so, so sexy that even her brother is assumed to have slept with her (and even if them being siblings wasn't public knowledge, that is something that sjm wrote knowing full well what their actual relationship was). She isn't actually a heroine because she never does the right thing except for when she literally has to. She isn't smart because her comebacks always come at the expense of people she should empathize with. She isn't physically confident because her swagger comes from knowing that other people want to sleep with her, rather than comfort in her own body.
So yeah, I think that some of Aelin's behaviors and Bryce's behaviors look similar on the surface, but ultimately, what's beneath makes me question why sjm created two women who are so, so different, and yet tried to put the same window dressings on them.
aelin
The real problem people have with Aelin’s attitude throughout TOG (imho) is the fact that she owns what she is. She’s smart and strategic and carries a lot of burdens and is beautiful, and she never tries to diminish herself or act like she is less, in order to make other people feel better about themselves. And that’s what people don’t like to see.
We don’t want to see a pretty girl who knows she is pretty.
We don’t want to see a smart girl who knows she is smart.
Those things bother people. And honestly, why. Why do we want people to feel like shit about themselves. Or at the very least, why is it that others need to be the ones to validate us and say “why yes, indeed, you are actually smart, you may think that of yourself now”. That’s so effed.
In conclusion, anyone who would want to put someone else down (real or fictional) for recognizing their own strength and not minimizing it or downplaying it, can screw right off.
(And sure you can have other reasons for disliking her, whatever, but a character having confidence in themselves should not be a reason to dislike them. Especially when that can spill over into the real world and suddenly we are shaming real women for feeling good about themselves, for whatever reason.)

I was just looking at the scene where Lucien says that Elain is his mate, and when she comes out of the Cauldron, before he says anything:

Elain was staring at him before he spoke. She knew, too.

I haven’t been following you long and I don’t know if you’ve talked about it, but who do you think has the next acotar book? I finally finished the CC series yesterday (fun but yikes) and it looks like it’s Azriel but people seem annoyed about that.
I hope this didn’t ruin your mood!
Hello! Welcome, I did pin a post that had a bunch of links but I unpinned it in my "GAHHH ThIS FANDOM" mood haha.
I do think that Az is the next MC. I've thought so since acosf came out, and have felt that everything we've learned since has strengthened the arguments I had back in 2021.
The relevant ones are here though:
This post has my original ideas right after acosf came out, where I thought the next acotar would focus on Az, with emphasis on the Valkyries. Note how what I say about the Valkyries in 2021 still holds true - with even more evidence - in 2024 :D
I wrote this post after hosab came out and we knew about the crossover, explaining why I think Az is next
This post I wrote post-hofas and it explains what I think the plot of acotar5 could be
And this post explains why I think that narratively, it makes sense to have an Az pov to start the next book
You didn't ruin my mood at all, thanks for being concerned though! I'll pin that post again, for anyone who wants to read my older metas/analysis.
I am curious why you say that people seem annoyed about Az being next. I really am out of the loop in terms of what people are arguing about these days.
