Life in seclusion had been going perfectly splendid for Bucky and (Y/N).
They quickly settled into a peaceful routine and were happier than they could have imagined. The couple was thankful for Clint and his family, their companionship being a breath of fresh air from the choking atmosphere they had with Steve around.
One of the welcomed scenarios was experiencing Bucky in a fatherly role. On the occasion that Clint and Laura wanted a day off or a simple dinner, the Barton trio would stay at their cabin. At first, he had been terrified of being left alone with the kids for even a split second. He was mostly scared of Nathaniel. Being the youngest of the three kids, he was prone to some tantrums which would put Bucky on edge. The first time the kids came over, the man stood behind (Y/N) the whole time and barely spoke. Over time, with the help of the Bartons and (Y/N), the man started trusting himself with the kids.
Cooper, Lila, and Nathaniel were none the wiser of the older man’s fears and anxieties. They loved spending time in the couple’s house, many times begging their parents to have sleepovers at their aunt and uncle’s home — a request Clint and Laura were happy to grant. Especially after Laura gave birth to their fourth baby eight months after Bucky and (Y/N) had moved into the cabin, a little girl they named Natasha.
After getting used to older kids, Bucky’s confidence was buried six feet under when introduced to little Natasha. The day Laura came around with the small child in her arms, the man lost all color on his face.
“Come on, babe,” (Y/N) encouraged. “Here. Why don’t you seat on the armchair with your arms crossed and I’ll place her there?”
“But you can’t leave my side, okay?” Bucky’s voice trembled. From the kitchen, Clint and Cooper snickered at the grown man. “Don’t laugh you guys. I don’t want anything to go wrong.”
“Alright, boys. Behave,” Laura threatened lovingly. “Now, don’t worry, Bucky. You’re gonna be great.”
(Y/N) took the baby girl in her arms, cooing at the newborn. Since retiring, her mind had flooded with thoughts of having a family — a family she would share with the man that had taught her what true love was. All she could think of was little Buckys and little hers running around the big house. But she didn’t know if that was something Bucky would ever want.
She walked cautiously to the trembling man, making sure he could see every movement she was making. He would jump at any sound Natasha would let out, scared of what it could mean. (Y/N) sat on the arm of the chair and lowered the baby onto Bucky’s arms.
“Shouldn’t you put a blanket on her? My arm’s gotta be cold.”  He stiffened when the baby was placed on his metal arm.
“Darling, I’m sure the baby’s okay.”
“She likes the cold, actually,” Laura interjected, trying to provide a sliver of comfort. “She’s probably enjoying that.”
Bucky looked down at the infant in his arms and his whole demeanor changed. His eyes grew warm, and small droplets of water were puddling in the corners of his eyes. (Y/N) heart melted as she witnessed the scene, her wishes for a family only growing stronger.
Until the baby started to whimper, possibly in time for feeding. “I think that’s my cue. I’m sure I did something wrong.”
“She’s probably just hungry, Buck,” Clint spoke. “There’s no way you could have done anything wrong just sitting there.”
“Even though she started crying as soon as she’s in my arms,” Bucky protested. He motioned to (Y/N) to take hold of the baby and get as far as he could. “I’m good.”
“You’re just hungry. Aren’t you, Nat?” (Y/N) whispered as the baby started to cry. “Let’s get you to mommy, huh? Yeah, let’s go.”
“Any place I can feed her that’s a bit quieter?” Laura asked.
“Yeah, let’s go upstairs,” (Y/N) smiled at the mom. “By the way, guys. There are fresh cookies in the jar. I know you’ve been dying to get them.”
“Thanks, (Y/N)!” The three older kids yelled out before turning to beg their father for more than one each.
Laura followed (Y/N) up to a spare room, Natasha already quieted by her feeding. “I guess you haven’t told him then?”
“What could have given you that impression, Laur?” (Y/N) joked, closing the sheer blinds to diffuse the sunlight that was flooding the room. “I haven’t had the chance. And judging from his reaction to baby Nat, how could I drop this on him? What if he doesn’t want this baby?”
“(Y/N), in three months your belly is going to start showing and there’s not hiding it from him after that. This is the best time to get him acclimated to having a baby around,” Laura rationalized. “Do you want  to have this baby?”
“I really do. I think I’m just scared that Bucky will reject me and the baby.” (Y/N)’s eyes betrayed her and formed tears that spilled from her eyes. This was the first time she had voiced the worry she felt since finding out that she was pregnant.
“Oh, honey. I hope you believe me when I say that that man loves you unconditionally. The love and affection he displays, even when he simply looks at you, is something people only dream of. I’m sure that as soon as you tell him that you’re expecting, he’ll be overjoyed,” she beamed. “Even if he’s scared at first, I know it comes from a place of care and love. And, anyway, you’ll have a few months with Natasha to practice. He’ll certainly learn how to care for a baby.”
“I hope you’re right. Cause I don’t think I could handle that heartbreak.”
“And you won’t have to, (Y/N). I know Bucky will be happy about this,” Laura solaced the crying girl. “If you want to trust a single thing I ever say, believe this. So, tell him soon, please.”
“I will. Soon enough.”
It wasn’t until a month and a half afterward that the topic of babies floated around their house. Clint and Laura had asked for the couple to care for the kids for the weekend as they went away on an anniversary outing.
For the most part of the two days (Y/N) took care of baby Natasha, Bucky nominated himself to care for the older kids. She tried her best to push her boyfriend to get acquainted with the baby, but he always had an excuse. And she was growing discouraged that he would welcome the fact that they were bringing a new life to the world.
Until Sunday night.
Although she had been the one waking up during the night to care for Nat, she had not heard the baby cry until later. From their bed, (Y/N) heard a commotion from the baby cam. On the screen, a scene was unfolding that brought the woman to tears.
Bucky had baby Natasha on his right arm bouncing her up and down as he held her little hand with his metal one. The baby was cooing happily at the man, a smile painted on her face.
“You’re not so bad, are you?” Bucky spoke through the monitor, unknown to him that his partner was witnessing everything. “I wouldn’t mind having a couple like you around here. I mean, a little one just like (Y/N) would be an absolute dream. And look at me now — all calm, cool, and collected. I could get used to this.”
The baby let out a happy squeak and Bucky smiled, believing this was confirmation that he was doing a good job. After a warm bottle and a couple of minutes of bouncing, baby Nat had fallen back asleep. He was cautious as he placed the baby into the cot, making sure she was comfortable and warm before heading back to his room.
He grew worried when he heard sobs coming from their room, alarms ringing knowing (Y/N) was in the room. Inside, his girlfriend was holding the baby monitor in one hand and a tissue in the other. She sniffled loudly as she wiped away the big streams of tears.
“Darling, what’s wrong?” Bucky ran to her side, taking her hands in his and rubbing her knuckles. “Is the baby okay?”
“Yeah, she’s fine. Sleeping peacefully,” she smiled. “It’s just I heard what you were saying through the monitor, and I couldn’t help but get emotional.”
“Oh, doll. Come here,” he wrapped around her. His arms encircled her perfectly, the back of her head landing on his chest. She was comfortable… happy… safe. “Is there something else that’s going on, (Y/N)?”
“Now that you mention it, there is something I have been meaning to tell you,” she whispered. Bucky could tell she was nervous but had no theories of what it could be about. He had learned to not jump to conclusions – his brain programmed to believe the worst-case scenario. “I’ve been wanting to tell you about this, but I haven’t known how to or how you were gonna react. And we’ve built such an amazing life already here, and I didn’t want to jeopardize this, and…”
“You’re rambling, darling,” he chuckled.
“I’mpregant,” she spoke quickly and a little over a whisper.
“What?” He had made out exactly what she had said, but he needed verbal confirmation of what she had said.
“I’m pregnant. Two months now, to be exact.” (Y/N) bit down on her lip, still dubious of how he would react now that it was real.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Laura took me a few weeks back to her doctor and she confirmed that I was in fact with child.” She played with Bucky’s fingers awaiting a response, too anxious to look into his eyes. “What are you thinking?”
“What could I think? We’re going to be parents!” Bucky hugged her tightly, falling back onto the bed with her on top. He flipped her over and planted a kiss on her lips, a smile on both of their faces. “I’m gonna be a dad, (Y/N).”
“And I’m gonna be a mom.”
“The best mom ever.”
“You think?”
“I know so. I’ve seen you with Barton’s kids and how much they love you. I know our kid will love you even more than those kids do.”
“And I’m sure you will be the best dad ever.” She kissed him, noting the doubt in his eyes. “Even if you don’t believe me, I know this kid is gonna be so lucky to have you as their dad.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I know you, Bucky. Because I see you – who you were, who you are, and who you will be. And there is no doubt in my mind that you have what it takes to be an amazing parent,” she reassured. “And we always have Clint and Laura for help. They have extensive practice.”
They both laughed before Bucky kissed his partner softly. Staring into her eyes with the same lovable gaze he always held exclusively for (Y/N). His right hand caressed her cheek, peppering kisses across her face. Whilst the kids were at home they wouldn’t engage in a higher level of intimacy, this was the closest thing to physicality they would partake in.
“We’re going to be amazing parents,” Bucky reaffirmed before they both drifted to sleep.
That had been four months back, now (Y/N)’s belly had sprouted, and the evidence of pregnancy was noticeable to all that saw her. During those months Bucky used all the babysitting time he could get with the kids to practice caring for children. On the off times, he’d continuously pick Clint’s brain on what having a newborn would be like. If there was anything he’d be sure to do, it was to be well informed.
It had already been a year and a half since they had moved to the cabin, loving every second of the time they had away from the chaos of being an Avenger. Wanda, Bruce, and Sam had come by as often as they could, only bringing stories of their pastimes and no word of missions was ever uttered in their home. The last time they had visited Bucky and (Y/N) they rejoiced in the news of her pregnancy. She had only started to show but she wore form-fitted clothing that showed her growing bump. Wanda would call every day she could to ask how (Y/N) was doing, living vicariously through the life she had dreamed of through her friend. Bruce would check in on how the baby was doing medically, curious about how Bucky’s super serum would affect the offspring. On the other hand, Sam would tease Bucky on how he went from assassin to Avenger to a diaper-changing dad. It was all in good fun and he always ended the jokes by stating how proud he was that his friend had been able to turn his life around regardless of his past.
Bucky wouldn’t say it, but the support from their friends had helped calm the anxious voices in his head that told him that he wasn’t good enough to be a dad – that somehow his past would catch up to him and all that he had now built with the love of his life would crumble. In time he learned to accept who he had become, in spite of who he had been. Gaining the smallest boost in confidence – enough to ease his parental panic.
A couple of months had passed since their last visit, and the couple understood why. But they had promised that soon enough they’d be popping in for a much-needed visit. It was a weekend during her seventh month of pregnancy and the Barton kids were once more spending the days in their home, Laura and Clint on a getaway.
Bucky was in the backyard with the older kids and (Y/N) inside cooking and looking after 8-month-old baby Natasha when a knock resounded on their door. She set the mac and cheese in the oven and grabbed hold of the girl, balancing her on her hip. (Y/N) was hoping that their friends had finally had a day off and had come for an impromptu visit.
“Who’s at the door, huh? Could it be auntie Wanda? Or uncle Bruce, or uncle Sam?” Natasha squealed in response as (Y/N) opened the door. “Steve.”
Had she not been holding the baby up, (Y/N) was sure she would have fainted. It had been such a long time since Steve Rogers had crossed her mind, he seemed like a distant memory and her brain had worked well to repress his memory. But here he was, standing before her as if everything that had happened between them was all a dream.
“(Y/N), can’t believe how much time has passed,” he breathed out. “Is she…?”
“She’s Clint and Laura’s.”
“Oh, but you’re expecting.”
“Why are you here, Steve?” She was growing impatient, anger bubbling in the pit of her stomach. “And how did you find us?”
“May I come in? Please,” he asked – although it sounded more like he was begging her. “I promise I mean you no harm.”
“I guess,” she spoke with her back molars. (Y/N) didn’t understand why she was allowing him access to their sanctuary, but alas he was already inside. “Just so you know Bucky is in the backyard.”
“I promise I come in peace, (Y/N). I just want to make things right.”
“Alright, sit.” She guided him to the couch in the living room, placing Nat in her bounce chair.
“How far along are you?”
“Seven months now,” she sighed loudly, rubbing her temples. “Cut the chit-chat, Steve. Why are you here?”
“Right, I came to explain my behavior from so long ago. I have to admit I wasn’t myself.”
“What do you me…?”
“Hey, (Y/N). You mind getting the kids a couple of water bottles they haven’t stopped for a…” Bucky interrupted the conversation, crashing in through the back door. But his step turned cold when he saw a figure from his past. “What is he doing here?”
“Bucky, it’s good to see you.”
“Can’t say the same for you, Rogers. But you haven’t answered the question. What the hell are you doing here?”
“I only came to talk. Explain why I have acted the way I have. Please, I just want a minute of your time.”
Bucky was suspicious of Steve’s intentions, but (Y/N) assured him they could lend an ear to whatever explanation or excuse he wanted to purge.
“Hey, Coop!” Bucky yelled out to the oldest Barton from the backdoor. The boy came running up and grabbed the three water bottles the man had separated. “Keep your siblings out here for a bit. If you need anything call out before coming inside, okay?”
“Is that…?” Cooper peaked his head slightly through the door, noticing the infamous Captain America in the living room.
“Yeah. It’s a long story, just keep your brother and sister out there for a little bit.”
“Okay, uncle Buck.” The older kid didn’t understand the situation but was aware of the tension between the three adults.
“The kids should be getting tired soon, so speak quickly. Yeah?” Bucky sat next to (Y/N), putting an arm protectively around her. She could tell he was irate. His nostrils were flared, and his right hand was strained in a painful fist; his breathing was heavy, and his gaze was burning. She placed a hand on his thigh and drew shapes on it to attempt a calming touch.
“Well, firstly. I’d like to apologize for the pain I have caused the both of you in the past.”
“That’s fucking grand. All is settled then, right?”
“Buck,” (Y/N) calmed. “Let’s just hear him out for a sec, yeah?”
Bucky nodded in agreement. “Go on.”
“It’s no excuse, but I wasn’t in the right mind,” Steve continued. “Banner noticed a few weeks after I went back to the tower that I wasn’t acting like myself and started digging. Without my knowledge he started monitoring my brain activity and did some blood work, claiming it was routine. It took some time but noticed some strange markers in my lab results and grew concerned. Somehow, he was able to figure out that when I went back in time there was some time that was unaccounted for in my head and as he did more research, Banner was able to deduce that I had been brainwashed while in the 40s – possibly taken by HYDRA agents but was able to escape somehow. I have yet to regain memory of what actually happened during that time, but my head was still tweaked when I came back to this time. And the way I treated you both and your relationship was horrible. I just wanted to apologize, honestly, for what I did.
I don’t expect you guys to forgive me or allow me to be back into your lives, but I wanted you both to know the Steve that came back wasn’t the same one that had left. I am happy that you’ve found solace in each other and are building a life together. All I’ve ever wanted was the best for you both. Even if for a second it didn’t seem like I did.”
The couple was dumbfounded. It took a couple of silent minutes for the information to be digested. Bucky knew what it was like to not be in the right mind frame. Being a victim of brainwashing himself and knowing how easy it was to lose yourself, he believed the story. But forgiving the man for the hurt he caused (Y/N) was another story – he wasn’t sure if he could ever do it.
“Yet you weren’t brainwashed when you decided to leave,” (Y/N) choked out. She sat up from the relaxed position she had been in, Bucky placing a comforting hand on her back. He knew she was close to crying and didn’t want her to feel alone. “Your brain was in your full control when you made the choice to stay in that time… when you tasked Bucky to deliver your letter… when you chose to lie to me after five years together. What’s your excuse then? Fine, when you came back you were acting impulsively, under the control of whatever it was that they did to you – I understand that. What I can’t wrap my head around is the fact that you chose to break my heart and rely on your best friend to be the messenger. How could the Steve Rogers we knew, and loved, do that?”
“I will never have a valid excuse for hurting you both. I felt like I deserved to be selfish after caring for others for so long. And maybe that pain could be eased by taking back the life I would’ve had if I didn’t crash back then.” Steve wiped away stray tears that had fallen – they didn’t deserve having to see him cry and he didn’t want them to pity him either. “Again, I understand if you can never forgive me – if this is the last time I ever see the both of you again. And if there’s anything you take from today, I hope you believe how much I did love you. I desisted of the idea of being with Peggy until the chance to go back to her arose. The whole time I thought of you and the pain I caused you. I mourned the life we were building, and I hated myself for being the only culprit in all of this. When I came back, I knew you deserved better, better than me, and anything that I could ever give you. That’s why I stayed away for a long time.
Until I saw you with the better you deserved — I got jealous, and I was hurt. Jealous that I wasn’t man enough to give you that happiness. That I believed my happiness was rooted in a different time when I had found it with you and threw it all away. And I know I had no right to be hurt, but he was my best friend, and you were the woman I was in love with. And the first time I saw you both together something was triggered inside my head, and I changed into someone else completely.” (Y/N) could see Steve was flustered. He was talking in circles, trying his best to explain a situation she didn’t believe he yet comprehended fully. Bucky, on the other hand, was less sympathetic. Anger was still boiling inside him, and the only reason he was keeping himself from punching Steve in the face was to not fluster his pregnant girlfriend. “Anyways, all in all, I’m happy you guys got together and are building a beautiful life. (Y/N), I will always love you and I’m grateful for the five years we were able to share together — I wouldn’t change that time for anything. I’ll always regret not coming back to you like I said I would. And Bucky, to me you’ll always be like a brother and I’m thankful you were in my life for the time that you were. I love you both and I hope you’ll continue to live a wonderful life. Again, I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I apologize from the bottom of my heart for everything I did to you both.”
Steve stood from the couch, not another word to be spoken, wiping tears from his eyes. (Y/N) had let small tears fall and Bucky just sat motionlessly. Steve had unloaded so much information in such a short amount of time that their brains seemingly were malfunctioning. The man exited the house swiftly, leaving the pair with their thoughts.
“He can’t go yet,” they both talked at the same time.
“Rogers! Wait,” Bucky stood up, running to the front door to catch Steve’s attention before he got into his car.
“We’re not done yet,” (Y/N) joined him seconds after, motioning to Steve to come back.
“Look, I think I speak for the both of us when I say that we can’t trust you right off the bat,” Bucky looked at (Y/N) and received a smile and a nod as confirmation that they were on the same page. “But we can try getting back the friendship. It won’t be the same as before, but maybe taking one day at a time we can rebuild our relationships.”
“Only if you’re both okay with that? I know it will take a long time to build back those bridges, but I want nothing more than having you both back in my life.”
“Alright. We’ll take it slow. But so help me god, Rogers, the first fuck up and you’re out. My job is to protect (Y/N) and our baby. So, if you hurt them in any way, I’ll make sure you regret it. Got that?”
“Absolutely. Everything will be on your terms and if at any point you feel like it’s time to end it, I’ll comply.” Steve was fighting the huge smile that was threatening to fuse to his face. His actions took him to lose his family, and today he got back the hope of having them back in his life. “You will not regret this. I swear.”
“We better not, Steve,” (Y/N) warned. “The stakes are higher this time. If you screw up this time, you’re out. Forever.”
“I understand. Thank you, guys.” Steve finally allowed himself to grin a little, the joy he was feeling too much to contain. “And congratulations on the baby. I’m sure they’ll be a beautiful kid.”
“It’s a boy. We’re having a boy,” Bucky informed. “We’re actually having a baby shower next weekend and we’d like to have you here.”
“Wow, that’s amazing. I know you’ll both be great parents,” Steve smiled finally. He wanted to go up and hug them, show them how ecstatic he was that they were both happy. But he knew he couldn’t cross boundaries before they gave the go-ahead. “I’ll be here.”
“Thank you, Steve. Drive home safe, yeah?”
“Yeah, thanks. I’ll see you.”
Bucky wrapped his arm around (Y/N) as they watched Steve drive away on the dirt road still unsure of what unfolded in their living room. It had been a short conversation and somehow they had resolved all the issues that had dug themselves between them. Only time would tell if forgiveness was a route they could go down on.
“What just happened?” (Y/N) questioned, taking the dish of Mac and cheese she had placed to bake into the oven. “Are we sure that just happened?”
“I don’t know,” Bucky chuckled. “I’m still as confused as you are.”
“I just hope this is truly the beginning of a healing journey and not another detour into chaos,” (Y/N) voiced her fears. She wanted to believe Steve was bound by good intentions, but his past actions had instilled a deep-rooted apprehension. “But for now, let’s just give him the benefit of doubt and see how it plays out. And call Sam, he’s gonna be pissed that we invited Steve. If there’s anyone holding him at an arm’s length more than us, it’s him.”
“Yeah, bird brain has become very invested in our relationship.”
“Sometimes too much,” she laughed. “Coop, Lila, Nate! Food’s ready!”
The three kids came running when they heard their aunt’s voice through the kitchen window. They were drenched in sweat, cheeks red from the sun. Nathaniel’s hands were covered in mud, leaving streaks on his face as he wiped away the sweat. The three of them were quick to seat on the stools of the kitchen island, ready for their plates of mac and cheese.
“Uh, what are you guys doing?” (Y/N) questioned.
“It’s time to eat,” Lila spoke, confused at the question.
“Guys, you just came from outside. Look at Nate,” Bucky pointed. “He’s covered in mud. Wash your hands and faces first.”
“Okay, dad,” Cooper laughed, sarcasm dripping from his tongue.
“Dad, huh? I like the sound of that,” (Y/N) kissed Bucky’s cheek. “Soon enough we’ll have our own kid talking to us like that.”
“And I can’t wait.” He wrapped his arms around her again and placed a kiss on her lips.
“Guys, gross.” Cooper grimaced, his siblings imitating his features. “We’re trying to eat here.”
“Okay, mud face. Clean up your face and then you can eat, alright?”
The three kids groaned but eventually, they did as told. (Y/N) couldn’t help the smile that plastered on her face. A few months ago, Bucky had been paranoid about becoming a father, but his parental instincts had come into full swing since caring for the Barton kids. It was a shift in his life he had not anticipated.
For the rest of the day, Bucky and the kids finished playing outside. At one point the three of them were hanging off Buck’s metal arm as the man effortlessly carried them. Happy tears left (Y/N)’s eyes as she witnessed the scene. In a short amount of time, they would have their first child and take the first step into having moments like this with a family of their own. After all the heartbreak and pain they had endured, their life was finally looking up.
Once the moon had risen, it was time to put the kids to sleep. They went down easy, too tired from the day to fight bedtime. Bucky turned off all the lights in their rooms and made sure the heating was controlled. The house was big enough to allow each kid to have their own guest room, with no quarrel over who got what room and who had to share a space. (Y/N) had just finished a bedtime story with Nathaniel when Bucky peaked his head into the room to turn off the lights. The little boy was fast asleep on her arm, clutching onto the woman’s pajamas.
“Seems he doesn’t want to let go,” Bucky smiled. “Can’t say I don’t blame him.”
“Hand me that bear over there, will you?” She pointed at a small bear that rested atop the dresser next to the door. Bucky tossed it her way, hoping she was able to catch it with one hand and minimal movement. Which, as a trained agent, (Y/N) was able to. “Now, let’s switch my PJs for the bear. And I’m free.”
She kissed his forehead and joined Bucky’s side after turning off the light of the room. The exhausted pair made their slow walk to their room, crashing on the bed as soon as they were inside.
Bucky wrapped (Y/N) in his arms, her head resting on his unclothed chest. She drew circles on it, her attention on the racing thoughts from her brain.
“What’s running through your head, doll?” He ran his right hand through her hair, noticing his girlfriend’s spaciousness. “Thinking that hard will give you a headache.”
“We’ve never talked of this, and I don’t want you to feel like you have to talk about this if you don’t want to, but how bad can the brainwashing be?”
“Are you sure you want to know about it? It’s not pretty.”
“Our job has never been pretty,” she chuckled. “I guess I just want to understand what could have made Steve do what he did. You’ve known him longer than anyone has, and you were surprised at how he behaved when coming back.”
“Well, it’s hard, if what happened to him was in any way like what happened to me. You lose your real self inside of yourself. Your brain only works to do whatever it is you are programmed to, but your conscious brain is stuck in the back watching as your body works like a robot. You do things, say things that are unnatural to you, but you still have to do them,” he sighed. Bucky’s eyes were pooling with tears, thinking of his past was an activity he refrained from to maintain his mental state. “Your memories haze, making you unsure of what’s real or not. It’s hard afterward to determine if you’re clean. Anything could trigger the washing once more – for me, it was the phrase. Thanks to Shuri and T’Challa in Wakanda, I was able to regain my brain once more. But I still had the memories of everything I had done. Just because I wasn’t myself didn’t mean I didn’t do the actions.”
“So, you’re a prisoner inside your own head, watching what you’re doing without being able to control how you react?”
“Exactly. It’s like you’re watching a movie and yelling at the characters, but they can’t hear you.”
“Then Steve couldn’t control what he did and what he said? When he came back, he wasn’t the same Steve that left,” she contemplated. “Maybe he does deserve our forgiveness. In time, we could go back to the friendship we used to share.”
“Maybe he does,” he agreed. “When I was finally free of the brainwashing, I could barely live with myself for what I had done. But I knew I needed to make amends, not for others but for myself. I knew not everyone would be able to forgive me, but I needed them to know the full story before judging my actions. What the people did afterward was out of my control, as much as I wanted them to forgive what I had done.”
“We take it one day at a time, then. Slowly start introducing him back into our life, trust that he won’t bring chaos back into it.”
“Okay, we will. We start this Sunday, yeah? I’m not gonna lie I’ve missed the idiot we knew,” he chuckled.
“Yeah, I missed him too.”
It had been a busy week in the couple’s household. Laura and Lila had come over every day to help out with everything (Y/N) could need for the baby shower whilst Bucky and Clint cleared out one of the rooms to transform it into a nursery. But the girl was growing exasperated, with her growing belly standing for more than five minutes becoming too exhausting. She couldn’t help in the ways she wanted – no running around with the kids, no painting the nursery because of the fumes, no standing for too long in shops to buy decorations or ingredients for the food.
“I know that face,” Laura spoke. “You want to do all the things you could do before your belly grew and your feet swelled. You’re growing frustrated that you can’t stand for too long, you have to pee every five seconds, your back hurts – you can’t wait to feel like you used to feel.”
“Right on the spot.”
“I’ve been there four times. It gets easier to handle after the second one – getting used to needing help and staying on the sidelines. We’re here to help you, your job is to delegate now.”
“He’s coming today,” she blurted.
“Steve?”
“Yeah, he sent his RSVP as soon as the invitation was sent out. He told us what happened when he went back in time, how he wasn’t himself when he came back.”
“But something in you still doubts that he has changed.”
“I’m scared of what bringing him back into our lives could cause. It’s too unpredictable.”
“Trusting someone usually is. But don’t trust him, trust yourself – your instincts. They have yet to steer you wrong,” Laura smiled. “Now let’s get you ready. Your guests should start arriving soon.”
She helped (Y/N) get dressed, the girl too tired to do much by herself. In times like this, she was grateful that Clint and Laura lived so close by. They had the time and experience to help (Y/N) and Bucky learn the ropes of life outside of the Avengers. Had it not been for them, the girl was sure they would have gone back to work a month into retirement.
Three o’clock had hit when the first person arrived. From his tours around the galaxy, Thor had been the first one to arrive other than the Bartons. He landed somewhat gracefully on the front lawn, leaving a mark on the freshly cut grass. The kids ran to the blond, the man carrying them all in a hug. The god said hi to Laura and Clint after, then Bucky, and finally (Y/N).
“Lady (Y/N), you look as radiant as ever.” He hugged her softly, worried about hurting the baby somehow. “You’re going to be an amazing mother.”
“Thank you, Thor. It’s great to see you again.”
“I’ve brought this for the little one,” he beamed. Out of a bag, he pulled a black and gold dagger, beautiful engraving on the handle – not apt for a baby. (Y/N)’s eyes grew big in astonishment. “He’ll grow into it, obviously.”
“It’s gorgeous,” she chuckled. “I’ll display it in a protective case for the time being.”
“You can put a picture of me next to it, so he knows his uncle Thor gave it to him.”
“At least it’s not a weapon that’s determined by your worthiness,” laughed Sam as he walked up to the party. “Although I have no doubt that baby Barnes would be more than worthy in the eyes of all Asgardian weapons.”
“Sam!” (Y/N) wrapped her arms around her friend, welcoming him once more to the house. Then directed her attention to the redhead that walked behind him. “Wanda! Oh, I’ve missed you guys.”
“We’ve missed you too. I have to say, I much prefer you as a partner,” she whispered. “But Sam will do.”
“Where’s Banner?”
“He’ll be arriving with Pepper and Morgan.” Wanda stopped for a second, unsure if she should announce the arrival of the other guest. But if he had been invited by the couple, they would have already known he was coming. “And Steve too.”
“I know, Wanda. We invited him. He came by last week, and explained the situation. We’re giving him the benefit of doubt.”
“Should’ve told me that before I went off on him,” Sam interjected. “I suggest you refrain from printing any unedited pictures with him in them. Don’t think the kid will want to have a reminder that someone had a shiner on his baby shower.”
“Sam,” (Y/N) reprimanded.
“Sorry, no one told me we were giving the man a chance.”
“Bucky was supposed to call you.”
“I forgot?” Bucky shrugged. “It’s been hectic, and it slipped my mind.”
“Great. He’ll be grateful for that,” she chuckled.
“Let’s go to the back while we wait,” Laura smiled. “I didn’t spend all this time decorating to be stuck on the porch.”
The group headed inside, trailing too many bags of gifts to the backyard.
It was the first time that (Y/N) had seen the work everyone had done that week. Tears formed in her eyes as she saw everything come together. There was a long table under a pergola the boys had built, decorated with white flowers and beautiful table settings. The sage green color she had chosen for her baby’s nursery popped on the white plates as perfectly folded napkins. It was simple, beautiful, and familial.
Laura instructed the guest to leave the bags on a designated table as Bucky led (Y/N) to the big peacock-style chair at the head of the table. She could tell her partner was nervous, and fidgety over small details since this morning. But the reason why was unknown to her. Everything was perfect.
The kids had brought out some platters with appetizers, helping out their mother as she put the finishing touches on the food they’d be consuming later. The boys were the first to dive into the food, then the men — each with a bottle of beer in their hands. Wanda laughed at the sight as she sat next to her friend, a glass of water in one hand and a glass of rosé in the other.
“You’d think they haven’t eaten in days,” the redhead laughed.
“Some things never change,” (Y/N) joined. “So, you and Sam seem friendly.”
“There’s nothing there, my friend. He’s a great man — reminds me of my brother,” she smiled. “But don’t avoid the elephant in the room. Steve was invited. Why?”
“Full disclosure, we missed him in our lives.” Wanda raised an eyebrow. Who would miss the person that destroyed them? “Don’t get me wrong, we missed the Steve we used to know. The Steve before the brainwashing fiasco. It’s hard to just cut him off when you know he’s been through such a hard time by himself.”
“You’re a big girl, (Y/N). As much as I may oppose it, I trust your decision. I just don’t want you to go through the same pain you did back then. You’ve allowed your heart to heal but those wounds are still fresh enough to reopen at any point.” Wanda put her hand over her friend’s. As someone that had witnessed firsthand (Y/N) going through the five stages of grief, she wouldn’t need too many reasons to remove the man from their lives. She cared for the girl like a sister, and she protected her family. “But today is a happy occasion. And I won’t let him sour my mood because we are celebrating my godson.”
“Thanks, Wanda,” she smiled. “I love you and I love how protective you are. Now let’s eat something.”
As time trickled by, more guests arrived at the ranch. Everyone had gathered once more, this time for a celebration of life – the Wakandians and the Guardians were represented; Peter; Carol; Happy; Rhodey; Steven, and Wong; Hank and Janet were with Hope and Scott; and Maria and Nick decided to join the party.  Each of them had worked at some point with (Y/N) and Bucky and held them in high regard. Everyone had been excited at the news that they were expecting and they had promised to attend this celebration no matter what.
Their backyard was filled with lively chatter. Old friends catching up on their extraordinary missions or training, on their love lives and for some the lack thereof, on their families. It was a beautiful sight to behold. The world’s mightiest heroes all met up at the same place being normal people – no expectations, no one to save.
But all chatter ceased when Steve Rogers walked through the doors after Pepper Potts and her daughter, Morgan. All heads turned at the man that had betrayed his best friend – there wasn’t a soul there that hadn’t heard of Steve’s, Bucky’s, and (Y/N)’s situation.
The man went beet red when all eyes fell upon him. He understood why everyone would give him the cold shoulder, judging his presence at the event. And he felt he owed everyone an apology.
“I know Steve’s appearance at the party is surprising,” (Y/N) interrupted the choking silence. Bucky joined the woman’s side, wrapping an arm on the low of her back. “But Bucky and I have decided to give our friend a second chance, and we hope you do too. He’s explained his situation to us, and we feel he is worthy of another chance.”
“Thank you, (Y/N),” Steve stammered. “I know the actions in my past have been questionable, and that regardless of the situation, I hurt two of the people I value the most in my life. Their forgiveness is simply the first part of my redemption. I know it may be too much to ask of all of you, and I’m not saying you have to give it, but I beg your forgiveness. I am trying my hardest to put my life back on track and would love nothing more than to have my friends back in my life. Even if it takes forever.”
“I’m sure it won’t take that long, old friend.” Thor’s laughter boomed across the vast field joined afterward by the scattered laughs of the rest of the group. “Now, we can really start the festivities!”
The air around the party felt different now. Everyone felt more comfortable and was able to truly enjoy the beauty of the event. They played cringy baby shower games – chugging baby bottles, guessing the baby food, eating chocolate off a diaper. They ate and drank to their heart’s content. They talked, they sang, they danced. Hours and hours of interrupted happiness and joy, something they hadn’t had in years.
“I’d like to say a few words.” As they all sat around the dinner table, under the light of enchanted candles, Bucky stood with (Y/N) and called for attention. “I haven’t led the easiest life – much a lot of you around here – and for the longest time, I believed I was meant to live in that darkness. I could have never imagined that I would ever see a happy ending. But (Y/N) blew away all the dark clouds and made way for the light. (Y/N), everything we have gone through had led us to today, and I wouldn’t change a single thing. Every day that passes I choose you and I’ll continue to choose you and our little family.”
Bucky cleared his throat and knelt before the woman. Quickly, her eyes welled with tears and various gasps sounded across the table. “You all know I’m not one to talk much, so I will keep this short. Had I not had you in my life, I’m sure I would still be the scared and brooding man that I was years ago. You make me want to be a better man – a man that deserves you and our son. I would love nothing more if you would do me the honor of continuing to walk this life by your side. What do you say, doll? Will you marry me?”
“It took you long enough,” she cried as she jumped into his arms, placing a kiss on his lips. “Yes, yes, and forever yes. I will marry you.”
The crowd burst into applause and cheers as Bucky slid a beautiful diamond ring onto (Y/N)’s finger. Congratulations and finallys flew across the table, everyone ecstatic that their friends were finally getting the happily ever after they had worked so hard for.
Laura and Clint, the two people that had known of this surprise, had already opened bottles of champagne for the group and were serving it around, handing the pregnant girl a glass of sparkling cider.
“I would also like to say something,” Wanda spoke. “I propose a toast to our newly engaged couple. I don’t know two people more deserving of a happy ending than these two. I’ve fought beside them, cried beside them, and smiled beside them. (Y/N) took me in when I was by myself, she made me feel like part of her family after I had lost mine. You are more than a friend; you are my sister. And you, Bucky. I have thanked you before, but not a day will go by that I don’t continue thanking you for making (Y/N) the happiest I’ve ever seen her. You stood by her in her darkest time and gave her all the love and compassion she needed to cross that pond. There is no doubt in my mind that you two were always meant to find the other. And not only will you tie your life in marriage, but you will also be bringing new life to this world. So, raise your glasses to the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Barnes and the parents to my godson. Cheers!”
Everything had gone perfectly. All the scattered puzzle pieces were falling into place for (Y/N) and Bucky. Their Steve was slowly coming back to their life, they were living a safe and tranquil life, and they were expecting their first child. There was no doubt in (Y/N)’s mind that she had made the right choice by choosing James Buchanan Barnes to march alongside in life.

Shortly before seven o’clock in the evening, on Saturday, February 2, 1856, Nathaniel P. Banks of Massachusetts, strode to the well of the House, climbed the rostrum’s few steps to the Speaker’s chair, and sat down. He paused for a moment. With his thick dark hair swept to one side and a prominent mustache obscuring his upper lip, Banks then stood to address his colleagues.
A few minutes earlier, Banks had been elected Speaker for the 34th Congress (1855–1857). He had celebrated his 40th birthday just three days before, but now faced perhaps the toughest job in American politics at the time: leading a House that seemed hopelessly divided. His election as Speaker came almost two months to the day after the House first met on December 3, 1855. Members had cast 132 ballots for Speaker before finally electing Banks on the 133rd.
When he spoke, Banks, a former journalist-turned-lawyer from a town just west of Boston, thanked the House “for the honor” to serve as Speaker, but admitted it was a weighty task. “It would afford me far greater pleasure in taking the chair of the House,” he said, “were I supported even by the self-assurance that I could bring to the discharge of its duties—always arduous and delicate, and now environed with unusual difficulties—any capacity commensurate with their responsibility and dignity.”
What he unassumingly called “unusual difficulties” was, in fact, the fallout from the most chaotic period in House history.
Recurring Nightmare
The Speaker election that opened the 34th Congress was utter bedlam. The traditional two-party system that had dominated the House for the previous two decades no longer existed. As previous Congresses begrudgingly compromised over slavery, sectional lines in the House hardened between northerners and southerners. Existing party sympathies grew stale and new issues exacerbated lingering legislative battles. The Whig Party was on life support and the Democrats had seen their numbers in the House cut nearly in half. In 1854, a protean new group, the American Party (also called the Know Nothings), captured 51 seats behind a nativist platform, while a fledgling Republican Party hustled to build a workable coalition. Broadly speaking, the House was left with a fractured Democratic Party, a large bloc of Know Nothings, and an amorphous Opposition Party working against the administration of President Franklin Pierce. In perhaps a perfect understatement, the Baltimore Sun confessed to its readers on the eve of the 34th Congress, “It is a difficult matter to give the exact political complexion of the House.”
As a result, no one seemed to have an accurate gauge on the upcoming Speaker election. “Members are coming in slowly,” the New York Daily Tribune reported a week before the start of the session. “The Speakership, so far, is all in doubt, there being no satisfactory indication of the result.”
Some of the disparate coalitions had begun to consider nominations for Speaker, but another wondered whether it was even worth the trouble or whether it was better to just “vote it out in the House.” The excitement around the Speaker race, observed one Washington correspondent, was “intense.”
The uncertainty and excitement quickly gave way to deadlock. On Opening Day, Monday, December 3rd, after 21 Members received votes for Speaker on the first ballot, the House was off to the races. It held four votes that day, five more on Tuesday, six more on Wednesday, another six on Thursday, six again on Friday, and six more on Saturday before taking Sunday off. Like a recurring nightmare, this went on and on through December. The House ultimately held 84 votes for Speaker that month, unable to settle on a candidate.
“Mr. Zollicoffer's Purgation”
The year 1856 opened the way 1855 ended: with more and more votes for Speaker. But after the 107th ballot on January 11, 1856, Felix Zollicoffer of Tennessee, a second-term Member from a district that stretched west of Nashville, introduced a provocative bill that he hoped would help clarify the choice for the House.
Believing, as he said on the floor, that “when men aspire to political office, it is their duty, frankly and fully, to answer all questions which relate to questions involved in their election,” Zollicoffer, an old Whig now identifying with the American Party, submitted a bill to have the main candidates for Speaker—Henry Fuller of Pennsylvania, William Richardson of Illinois, and Nathaniel Banks of Massachusetts—publicly state their opinions of Congress’ recent actions on the spread of slavery to the western territories. This, his bill reiterated, was “in conformity with the fundamental principles of a great popular government.”
Some Members considered Zollicoffer’s measure a trap or at best a delay tactic, arguing that after more than a month of voting everyone already knew where the candidates stood. But ultimately, the House passed the bill, 154–39. Interestingly, Fuller, Richardson, and Banks all voted for Zollicoffer’s resolution.
The Tennessean really just wanted to corner the Democratic candidate, Richardson of Illinois, but when the House met the next day on Saturday, January 12th, the candidates answered the questions, one after another, with Richardson going first, Banks second, and Fuller third. A fourth candidate, Alexander Pennington of New Jersey, who had also been in the mix, agreed to answer the questions at the end despite being what he called “a candidate so obscure and unpromising as myself.”
Zollicoffer had three major concerns:
Did the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which enabled voters in the territories to decide the slavery question for themselves, promote the creation of Free states? (Richardson: It didn’t help, but it didn’t hinder either. Banks: No, didn’t prioritize Free states. Fuller: No, didn’t promote Free states or Slave states.)
Was the Wilmot Proviso, which tried to ban slavery in future western territories, constitutional? (Richardson: “I voted against it, because I believe it to be unjust.” Banks: “I believe in the constitutionality of that act which is known and generally understood as the Wilmot proviso.” Fuller: No, because “Congress has no constitutional right to legislate upon the subject of slavery.”)
Did the Constitution facilitate the spread of slavery into the territories and protect it there once established? (Richardson: No, only voters in the territory can decide on slavery. But the Constitution would protect it just like any other state “institution.” Banks: No, the Constitution did not give the states any leeway “to carry their own peculiar institutions beyond” their own boundaries. Fuller: Only voters of the territories can “declare whether they will tolerate slavery or not.”)
Other Members, both northern and southern, submitted questions that day; some were serious, some less so. But Richardson, Banks, and Fuller took the time to reply.
What effect did the three-hour Q&A session have on the race? Well, very little it seems. As soon as Fuller gave his final answer, the House held its 108th vote for Speaker. And once again, no one captured a majority. Compared to the ballot for Speaker the day before, Banks had lost four votes, Richardson lost one, and Fuller had picked up two. At three o’clock that afternoon, the House adjourned until Monday.
“Are we or are we not to have a House of Representatives?” one Boston newspaper asked in its coverage of what it called “Mr. Zollicoffer’s purgation.” “Is the government of the country to go on?”
Everyone had to wait about three more weeks to find out. In total, the House held 133 ballots for Speaker to start the 34th Congress, delaying congressional action for two months. In fact, the gridlock was so bad the House voted to lower the threshold for victory from a simple majority to a plurality for only the second time in its history.
In the end, Banks won the Speakership with 103 votes, the Republican Party grabbed a foothold in American politics, and the spread of slavery subsumed all other policy issues.
Trends
It’s easy to see the Speaker race of 1855–1856 as something of a bizarre outlier. And by and large, it was: Speaker elections in the House of Representatives have usually been open and shut contests easily settled on the first ballot. In fact, of the 123 times the House has had to pick a new Speaker since 1789, there have been only 14 instances in which a Speaker election has required multiple ballots (the records for the 2nd Congress (1791–1793) are inconclusive, unfortunately, and the House has filled vacancies in the Speakership three times using a resolution). The last time a Speaker election required two or more votes on the floor happened in 1923.
But with the exception of the 1923 leadership race, every other multiple-ballot Speaker election—13 out of 14, or nearly 93 percent—occurred before the Civil War when national party affiliations weren’t as cohesive as they are today. In fact, the 13 instances that required multiple ballots before 1861 account for exactly one third of the total number of Speaker elections in the antebellum era.
That’s an important characteristic, because during the 19th century, and possibly as early as 1799, groups of like-minded legislators often nominated candidates for Speaker in caucuses before the vote ever reached the floor. But, as in the campaign to open the 34th Congress, more factions meant more candidates, which meant longer votes and delayed proceedings.
After 1856, only two more Speaker elections required multiple ballots—one before and one after the Civil War—suggesting that the absurdity of the 34th Congress presaged the end of that chapter of American history, and signaled the rise of the modern two-party system. As one recent study on the Speakership argues, the Civil War made it official only five short years later.

Leviathan Chronicles Audio Drama - Reactions, part 1
So these are some of the reactions i had when listening to it for the first time last year:
I’m still listening to Leviathan Chronicles and it turns out it’s one of the earliest internet audio dramas from 2008. It’s not perfect since some of the concepts are a lil outdated but the blockbuster-style sound design & voice acting is amazing for its time. (This was still the era of flip phones, myspace, & geocities! Youtube was only 1years old.)
The creator is so precious bc you can tell it was created in 2008. There’s no patreon promos yet lol & in one of the outros he said “I got my first iPhone!” “Thanks for talking about us on AIM!” 🥺 He also jokingly blames President Bush for making one of the episodes late xDDD now that definitely dates this show lol.
Nowhere near as annoyingly straight as We're Alive. It does the female characters better than We're Alive. but omg the straightness is pungent. but yeah, if you like 2008 callouts and like crazy action (like think Black Widow "you should have died how are you still alive" action), and can withstand annoying straightness every 5 episodes, its an audio drama that stands the test of time so far.
Actual plot spoilers ahead!
one selling point tho is... its very very DELICIOUSLY violent 8D like on par with or more than darkest night & blood crow stories. altho the characters all have plot armor so no one important really dies :// some of the humans should be lying in hospital beds for 6months. or with major disabilities this is one of those audio dramas that rely on a narrator + voice cast, so there's clear descriptions of whats going on. but for a tasty preview of what happens so far (i havent finished s1 yet... its a HEFTY BOI. thats another downside.): there is a blimp fight, at least 4 submarine crashes & fights, there's been 2 mecha bot fights so far, there is a hospital shoot out, a boat shoot out, lab explosions, monster fights, human torture & testing, the most RIDICULOUS multi-vehicle chase scene in any media i've encountered, and the equivalent to a marvel movie finale battle Ooh it is so fun & stressful & adrenaline-pumping. Altho the characters tend to have an annoying amount of plot armor, so you lowkey know the important ones will survive no matter what shit is going down
Some more leviathan chronicles reactions: Holy moly a shout out to the 2008 Beijing olympics in the story “I think we’re the first podiobook to include a kungfu fight!” Story is written by a white guy & there is no “kungfu” fight. There is a LOT of gun fights tho! And it’s deliciously violent 8D “Hey come to our comic con booth & get free CDs!” “After I finish this podiobook I can be a real writer!”
holy moly am I listening to a marvel movie plot? This is probably the most extravagant motorcycle chase scene that is only matched by that one gang chase scene in Under the Electric Stars. This motorcycle chase scene in the middle of New York City would absolutely crash the characters xD it’s impossible unless you have Marvel movie plot armor I am frustratingly annoyed at how straight this show is tho. It’s nowhere as bad as We’re Alive at least. If this was written today, I’m sure several characters would’ve been genderflipped or queer.
omg there are sooo many twists & backstabbing going on. I think some people may hate it, but I actually find it fun! Oberlin & Whitt: having a flirting 3way fight Mai Lee: what’s going on here O&W: uh guy talk Mai Lee: I’m glad I don’t have a penis Me: DAMMIT WHITT IS SO OBSESSED W ALL THE GUYS THAT HE SHOULD BE GAY. Oberlin & Tulley would totally be an estranged gay couple if it was written today. Mai Lee & Lorelei have super lesbian or at least bi energy too. Same with Evangeline. Harlequin shouldve been a girl. I’m so pissed at Oberlin/Mai Lee … NOOO NATHANIEL!!! First main character death I guess I wish there was an queer audio drama today with as much action & mix of international settings/characters as Leviathan Chronicles (edited)
OMG THIS SEASON FINALE IS SO EPIC I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS. PLOT ARMOR SUDDENLY NO LONGER EXISTS. woohoo. This is like stranger things cuz finally everyone is united and sharing information. Note, I'm still team Evangeline. I have not listened a season finale this stressful since Blood Crow Stories or Primordial Deep or Penumbra. Altho it’s worse cuz it’s like 3hrs of adrenaline

I know I'm doing my best to avoid expecting anything for season 2, because it's how you get disappointed, but I kinda wish things went the way my fic does.
Timelines have been reset and Nathaniel Richards, the one who would become HWR in the previous cycle is out there still uncorrupt. I don't think I'm an authority in analyzing characters, but HWR gives me the vibes of a former hero who became corrupted and fell into cynicism after losing so many battles. A good guy who wanted to fight all his evil variants and ended up doing bad choice after bac choice to the point he crossed the line at some point and became the worst.
I think a really cool resolution would be to find this young Nathaniel before he takes the wrong path and help him not taking the wrong path. I know it sounds cheesy, but I want the message of this story to be that good intentions can lead to the worse things possible, and that young (and less young) poeple can and should be helped if they start taking a path of hate and radicalisation.
Also I just want to see Jonathan Majors playing a MCU version of Iron Lad (without the bad end Iron Lad generally gets). So can the Loki writers be brave enough (and be allowed by the producers ^^) to finally break the cycle the character of Kang got stuck into ? That would be really brave and emotional.
But again, I'm doing my best to not hyping myself too much with season 2. At this point I just want to see my dear characters again no matter what happens.

Wings Around the Globe Rally
Leg 7
(In the morning, the racers head to the runway.)
AANG (V.O.): We are live from Antarctica, and here they come!
Tumblr media
AANG: This is it, race fans. The final leg, back to New York.
(Marinette passes her parents, her plane turbocharged.)
TOM: We’ll see you in New York.
MARINETTE: Thanks, guys.
SABINE: Come on, Tom. We have a plane to catch.
(Nearby, Marinette turns a corner.)
PRESS REPORTER 1: Marinette.
PRESS REPORTER 2: She’s back.
(She heads towards Gabriel.)
GABRIEL: You have to be kidding me.
(He moves to Marinette.)
GABRIEL: Bolting on a few new parts doesn’t change who you are. (SNIFFS) I can still smell the bakery on you.
MARINETTE: You know what? I finally get it. You’re afraid of getting beat by a baker girl!
(She gets in his face, making him edge back.)
MARINETTE: Well, check six, because I’m coming.
(Marinette turns away, anger blazing in her eyes. Gabriel turns to Nathalie and Cash.)
GABRIEL: We are going to end this, once and for all.
CASH: Yeah.
NATHALIE: This is going to be fun.
(From behind a wall, Su-Han watches them leave.)
LEG 7: ANTARCTICA > NEW YORK
15,087 km
SOKKA (V.O.): This one’s all about speed and the willingness to give it all. The racer who cuts the ribbon in New York takes home the trophy and the glory.
Starting line: Williams Field at McMurdo Station in Antarctica
(The final leg starts with each racer taking off one-by-one, a countdown being the starting signal alongside an official dropping the flag. Gabriel takes off, then Nathalie and Cash follow.)
SUKI (V.O.): And we’re off! The first flyers take to the air!
Tumblr media
Starting positions:
Gabriel Agreste
Nathalie Sancoeur
Cash
Alya Césaire
Nino Lahiffe
Chloé Bourgeois
Sabrina Raincomprix
Alix Kubdel
Mylène Haprèle
Rose Lavillant
Juleka Couffaine
Ivan Bruel
Kim Chiến Lê-Ature
Max Kanté
Nathaniel Kurtzberg
Kagami Tsurugi
Marc Anciel
Ondine
Marinette Dupain-Cheng
(One-by-one, the racers take off.)
Tumblr media
ZUKO (V.O.): The rest of the field is now off and running. And though Dupain-Cheng did not complete the previous leg, race officials ruled her radio had been tampered with, so she’ll be allowed to compete, but with a severe time penalty.
(Marinette sits on the runway ready to go. She just has to wait for the countdown, which is longer than the others’ timers.)
Tumblr media
CROWD: …seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, zero!
(The crowd cheers as Marinette sets off over the snowy landscape at max torque.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AANG (V.O.): I’ve never seen someone come back from this far behind. It’s gonna take both horsepower and willpower to even have a chance.
(The others fly high through the clouds as Marinette travels below just above the ocean.)
Tumblr media
(She starts to overtake the other racers one-by-one, starting with Ondine and Marc.)
Tumblr media
(Overtaking Mylène and Alix, Rose glances down and sees Marinette race ahead, leaving the ocean surface rippling in her wake.)
ROSE: Way to go, Marinette!
Tumblr media
(Marinette continues in her relentless climb up the leaderboard by moving ahead of Nino and Alya.)
ALYA: Whoo! Go, girl!
Tumblr media
(She reaches fourth place, just behind Gabriel, Nathalie, and Cash as they approach the Grand Canyon.)
SOKKA (V.O.): Wow. Halfway through the leg, and Marinette Dupain-Cheng has finally caught up to the leaders. What a comeback.
TOPH (V.O.): But is it enough to win?
KATARA (V.O.): Well, considering she started in dead last, and had a time penalty, I think she’s got this in the bag.

Indian Mound Reserve / Peterson Park
2750 US-42
Cedarville, OH 45314
Indian Mound Reserve is a public county park near the village of Cedarville, Ohio, consisting of three parts. The reserve is named for two different earthworks within its bounds — the Williamson Mound and the Pollock Works, and Peterson Park straddles Massies Creek as it flows through a small canyon. In Peterson Park, both forks of Massies Creek flow through Cedarville Township from the east to their confluence in the township's center, whence the creek flows westward toward the Little Miami River. For the first 2 miles below the confluence of the forks, the creek utilizes a shallow but sheer canyon that reaches as deep as 40 feet below the surface of the surrounding terrain. Nathaniel Massie is reputed to have battled a Shawnee band under Tecumseh and forced them over the stream at the canyon. By the early twentieth century, local residents had known the vicinity of the "Cliffs" as a picnicking ground for the past hundred years, and calls were being made for its conversion into a park. In 1929, owners D.S. Williamson and a Xenia bank donated the Williamson Mound to the Ohio Historical Society.  Today, Indian Mound Reserve is operated as a unit of the Greene County Parks, which uses it to host events such as children's camps. Hiking trails, picnic grounds, a log cabin, Cedar Cliff Falls, and the ancient earthworks are among the attractions within the park, which lies along U.S. Route 42. The earthworks are located on opposite sides of the creek: the Pollock Works on the southern side, and the Williamson Mound approximately 1,650 feet, away on the northern side.
The Williamson Mound is a large mound in a field near Massies Creek. In 1881, it was described as being about forty feet high and one hundred fifty feet in circumference. It is perfectly oval in form, and has on its surface trees of a century's growth, denoting that the mound is very old. From its summit can be seen a distance of several miles in every direction." Its construction was attributed to the mysterious Mound Builders of old, who surely constructed it as a watchtower from which to observe enemies from afar. Local residents are believed to have dug around the mound around the turn of the twentieth century, but little damage appears to have been done. In the early 1970s, its dimensions were reported as being 150 feet in diameter by 27.5 feet in height; its decrease in height may have been the result of differing measurements, as in 1848, the Greene County surveyor had reported its measurements as 30 by 140 feet.   More recent archaeological studies of the site have concluded that it was constructed as a burial mound by people of the Adena culture in the final centuries before Christ. While the mound has never been scientifically excavated, its great size suggests that its construction took place over an extended period of time, leading archaeologists to conclude that it may contain evidence of multiple stages of Adena society as well as in the mortuary traditions practiced on those buried in the mound.
The Pollock Works occupy a high promontory above the southern side of Massies Creek: both the northern and southern sides are the steep limestone walls, here averaging 25 feet in height, from which the name of "Cliffs" was derived. Although occasional fissures pierce the cliff,  permitting access through the old creek channel on the promontory's southern side, only via an isthmus on the western side is the promontory easily accessible,  due to its gentle slope. The area of the promontory is approximately 12 acres.  Across the isthmus are the remnants of small crescent-shaped earthworks and an artificial wall, which in the 1840s measured 30 feet thick at the base and 10 feet high; it is pierced by three small gateways, at each of which was originally located a stone mound. Due to its comparatively inaccessible location, Squier and Davis proposed in their Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley that the site was a fortification at which a simple palisade could render the promontory impregnable.  The works were discovered soon after Greene County was settled in the early nineteenth century and first made known to outsiders by Squier and Davis. In the 1910s, they were believed to have been the work of the Fort Ancient people, who were totally different from the higher Hopewell culture of the Scioto valle", and who would in times of danger retreat to the isolated Fort Ancient site. It was one of eighty-four archaeological sites observed in 1914 by William C. Mills' countywide archaeological survey, which deemed the Pollock Works the county's premier site. Scientific excavations under a Wright State University archaeologist have demonstrated that the Pollock Works were built by the Hopewell in a five-stage process that started in the first century after Christ. It appears that Squier and Davis correctly ascertained the defensive capabilities of the site; at some point in its history, a palisade stretched across the isthmus, although it was destroyed by fire and later buried by a fresh layer of earth. Although the site was seemingly employed as a hill fort for part of its history, it appears to have been a religious location and one of numerous Hopewell hilltop ceremonial sites.
Indian Mound Reserve is actively managed by the Greene County Parks, which promotes the beauty of the creek canyon and the history of the earthworks. The archaeological importance of the reserve forms the basis for programs educating elementary-school children about archaeology. Williamson Mound was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in December 1971 — becoming Greene County's first site on the Register aside from Huffman Prairie, where the Wright brothers learned to fly — and the Pollock Works followed two months later.

Miraculous Ladybug Redesigns
So I've taken upon myself to redesign most of the new looks that have come out is season 4 of Miraculous 😅
I had completely accepted how bad this show was and how much a of a dumpster fire season 4 had been thus far but as an artist, Penalteam was the last straw. Also, I've already posted my redesigns for Marc and Nathaniel here.
I also really appreciate the love the comments, reblogs and likes I got for those redesigns. It really helped encourage me to keep on with these. So thank you 💕
Also just to note it here, Juleka's super-outfit is the only really great look to come out of this season but I would've named her Panthera than just Purple Tigress.
Let's Go! I wanna die
Dog Sabrina
Tumblr media
She was the one I did right after Marc and Nate because her look was the most atrocious and as much as I don't have any feeling towards her character, I can't let it stand.
I'm never gonna let go of the fact that her final design in show was just her civilian clothes in a different font. Not to mention that UGLY-ass hat with the ears glued on.
So in my redesign I made her hair to be the ears and instead of giving her a literal collar, I gave her a belt to look like one. The miraculous itself is just hidden under the turtleneck.
I gave her 2 little tennis balls instead of one so she can throw them as weapons like Erina from Dingo Doodles' D&D story (if you don't know it, you can see it on YouTube.) I like to think that the balls can magnetize back into her hand like Captain America's shield and if you look closely you can see the palms of Sabrina's gloves are white.
Miss Hound is just a no for me in terms of names. Honestly, Miss Mutt would've been a better name. But overall I decide that Sabrina be renamed "Cavalier," which is a breed of dog that looks strikingly similar to how I ended up designing her.
Ox Ivan
Tumblr media
His superhero look was once again, another look that was just fine but I'm upset they made his suit gray when the ox is literally the only hero that's blue. Also he looks like he's wearing a winter coat and the fact that they didn't change his hair despite how distinguishable it is, kinda makes me mad.
I kept the shoulder bits because I thought it was nice but flattened out the rest of his torso. He's already big and bulky, he doesn't need the extra padding.
I actually really like the superpower they gave him but the name Minotaurox is a mouthful. So I decided to rename him "Bullock."
Pig Rose
Tumblr media
As cute as her design is in the show, I still had problems.
Mostly her bangs and the tutu. I didn't think a tutu was even really miraculous canon to how the hero costumes work and honestly, it still doesn't feel like so. Plus it was a slightly different shade of pink from the rest of the suit which is irritating. She looked more like she was wearing the miraculous of the lolipop than the pig.
So I 1) made the hoof patterning on her feet to be a dark brown so it looked like actual hooves. 2) Moved the lolipop thing from her chest to a belt buckle and made it look like a pig snout. 3) Changed her bangs to be more flattering and the pigtails to look more like pig ears. 4) Flip the colors on her mask.
Idk what the designers were thinking with Rose or Sabrina that made them choose to put the white on the top half of their masks. It's practically a rule of thumb that you put the darker colors on top because otherwise it looks like cancer. And it does, it makes Sabrina and Rose' eyes look sunken in and like they have cancer.
I mean can you imagine how the Hex Girls would look with their lip colors flipped?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rest my case.
I did keep the swirls in her arms and legs because the curls are clearly supposed to be in reference to pigs tails. I didn't change her name or power. Pigella is a cute name and while her power isn't spectacular, it can be useful for distractions in battle.
Also I just didn't feel like drawing the ankle bracelet. I'm tired.
Bee Zoe
Tumblr media
I hate this character's existence entirely but we'll ignore that for the sake of focusing on the art.
In her canon design, not only were the random black bangs stupid but she doesn't even remotely resemble a bee or wasp. She also has more black then yellow in her suit+hair and looks more like a villain then Queen Banana did. Also hate the shirt/pants color ratio and those dumbass sneakers.
So I cut off her bangs, gave her a thigh-high boot look and the same gloves Chloe had. I also kept the suit the same shade of yellow as Chloe's because the fact that they made Zoe's a warmer shade of yellow is not just such a copout, it actually makes her less distinguishable from the other heroes with gold/yellow.
I did take into consideration that the original designers were clearly trying to give Zoe's stripes a V shape to them since her name is Vesperia. So I kept that when rearranging the stripes in my redesign.
It's a much more simple design which is actually a blessing because it's on par with Queen Bee's and even Ladybug's looks. Her canon design has so much going on that it's a mess.
So I hope you like this
My redesigns will forever be canon in my mind/au because what is canon just sucks and I hope you enjoy this art post.
