>< Bed Of A Lake Where The Hemlock Grows ><
A/N: the second introduction to our lovely new oc, Ailean-Conall Hemlock. STS was created by @er0s-1s-whump1ng, since- y'know, this whole OC series is technically a collaboration, as are. the other two series. but shh. the title is a lyric from Irish Eyes by Rose Betts :3
CW: lab whump, technically a non-human whumpee, cursed whumpee, prolonged captivity.
>< — >< — >< — >< — ><
Ailean sighed contently, thoughts soothed by the gentle trickling of water as it glided down the stream he was laying beside. Soft grass caressed the skin of one calloused palm, the other dipped into the water, warmed by the sun's glare. The former was the only soft touch — if it could even be called that — that he'd felt in.. well, a while, really. He was glad that, at the very least, plants didn't wither away at his touch, unlike humans.
These were the sparse moments in which the cursed man could relax; could let his thoughts of self-loathing and the vivid images of the innocent people he'd killed with his bare skin, evaporate and give way to blissful peace. He never thought he'd be able to feel those things again. The sun on his face, the wind blowing in his golden hair.
Ailean's eyes were closed. But he liked it that way. If he just blocked out the memories that gnawed ferociously at his mind whenever he wasn't distracted, the darkness became a haven. But he didn't tend to enjoy the dark for too long. Opening his emerald eyes, expecting to see a canopy of green above him...
TS-0166 only saw flickering fluorescents, making him squint and shield his eyes with a bandaged, pale hand.
Oh.
He sat up with a soft groan, his soft clothes having been long replaced with a baggy shirt and matching shorts.
Oh.
So he was still here. In the hellhole he'd come to know, to memorize, for— what had it been, years? The test subject didn't know anymore. He could've sworn he had hardly been aging, either, which just added to his confusion.
TS-0166 lay back down and curled in on himself, drawing his bruised knees up to his chest and wrapping his arms around them, almost in a pathetic attempt at giving himself a hug. And it kind of was. He himself was the only comfort he had in the confines of his cell. The floor felt cold and hard under his weight; a feeling that felt oddly familiar to him.
Oh, how he wished for freedom. To be back in a forest, by that stream, dipping his hand into the water and letting it run across his fingers.
Maybe he could have that again. If he planned it right, he could escape...
TS-0166's thoughts were interrupted by the telltale whirring of the cell door opening, followed by footsteps he, somehow, recognized. Him. The very ginger prick he wanted to touch, to hit, to make paralyzed and die more than anyone else in the world, but he couldn't get near to that even if he tried.
"Hello, '166."
He could escape another time, maybe.

" Awareness of Ignorance is The beginning of Wisdom.

Socrates, the ancient Greek philosopher. Here are five facts about Socrates:
Philosopher of Classical Greece: Socrates (469–399 BCE) was a classical Greek philosopher and a key figure in the development of Western philosophy. He is often credited with laying the groundwork for the Western philosophical tradition.
Socratic Method: Socrates is best known for his method of teaching, which is now called the Socratic method. Instead of lecturing, he engaged in dialogues with his students, asking them a series of questions to stimulate critical thinking and illuminate ideas. This method is still used in modern education.
Never Wrote Down His Ideas: Socrates did not leave behind any written records of his teachings or philosophy. Most of what we know about him comes from the writings of his students, primarily Plato, who documented Socratic dialogues and discussions in their works.
Charged and Executed: Socrates' unorthodox teachings and questioning of traditional beliefs led to his being charged with impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. In 399 BCE, he was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock, a poisonous substance, as depicted in Plato's "Phaedo."
Philosophical Focus: Socrates was concerned with ethical questions and the pursuit of virtue. He often questioned the commonly held beliefs of his time, seeking a deeper understanding of concepts such as justice, piety, and the nature of the good life. His philosophical inquiries laid the foundation for subsequent philosophical developments in ethics and epistemology.

“While they were preparing the hemlock, Socrates was learning how to play a new tune on the flute. “What will be the use of that?” he was asked. “To know this tune before dying.” If I dare repeat this reply long since trivialized by the handbooks, it is because it seems to me the sole serious justification of any desire to know, whether exercised on the brink of death or at any other moment of existence.” ― Emil Cioran

La cicuta y Descartes
La Cicuta. Sócrates tan filósofo! Sócrates tan importante! Sócrates olvidado y recordado! Tan maestro! Tan ejemplar! Touhou Fangame Concept:
Western Science Interrogating Wonder(title could be workshopped)
The bit is that a bunch of greek philosophers have washed up on this side of the Hakurei Barrier, after the Yama assigned to their collective case(which has gone on for thousands of years) decided that it wasn't worth trying to continue to argue with them kicked them out of the afterlife in frustration. And so you, local Hakurei Shrine Maiden, are set to clean up the mess. By Yukari.
Your first encounter is, after having been drawn to a ruckus going on in the Human Village, being interrogated by a short, grumpy woman in greek looking clothing, and a dunce cap with a sprig of hemlock pinned to it. After defeating her in a danmaku battle that mostly consists of her criticizing you and interrogating your faith, your justifications for your actions, your sense of personal morality, your fashion sense, and if you lose your skill in danmaku. After you beat her she then introduces herself as Socrates, clarifies she puts the dunce cap on herself, and follows Reimu around for the rest of the game to provide commentary.
Your next encounter is a slovenly doggirl with floppy ears in a dirty tunic, who gets out of her barrel to spit in your face after she identifies you as a local religious figure. Reimu then decides to beat the tar out of her. Her mid-battle dialogue consists of complaining about you in particular. After the fight, she gets stuffed back into her barrel and rolled out of town. You get her name from Socrates after the fact, that being Diogenes, who assures Reimu that she's always like this.
Interrogating a nearby villager points you in the direction of the next philosopher, Pythagoras. She's wearing a golden wreath, trousers, and the kind of smile that makes you want to wipe if off. She (flirtatiously)asks if Reimu wants to join her following, expounding upon both her own virtues and the virtue of her teachings. Her spell cards are themed around various legends from Pythagoras's life, like an arrow gifted by Apollo, a bear convinced to never again harm a living being, and that one time they supposedly descended to the underworld and came back. Her danmaku projectiles are specifically rotating triangles. Notably after you defeat her she's still trying to proposition Reimu, even if she's given up on recruitment.
Moving on you find a very tall, broad, woman with a great deal of jewelry(no idea on an appropriate hat) speaking with Keine, and then after having her identified as Plato(another philosopher) by Socrates Reimu proceeds to beat the tar out of her. Her Spell Cards are themed mostly around the Theory of Forms, and defeating her reveals that she was teaching Keine about platonic philosophy with the intent to integrate it into her school's curriculum.
There's this whole bit where Reimu explains how teaching humans to interrogate the world around them like that would just repeat the course of the outside world, and that that would lead to an escalation of conflict between humans and Yokai to maintain the existing balance and preserve Gensokyo. So, very dangerous and likely to lead to a lot of violence. Turning Keine away from all of Plato's ideas. Socrates is being her usual self during all of this and keeps interjecting with interrogative questions and asking why why why before getting a seal slapped over her mouth to shut her up. But not before mentioning that if you're trying to stop the spread of "logic" and "common sense" you should really be going after Aristotle.
So off the shrine maiden goes and indeed, she manages to track where her next target is by a seeming aura of sensibility and "reality". Reimu needs to float outside the boundaries of common sense to keep moving forward, and eventually she encounters a woman in noble ancient greek dress outside the village, talking to a crowd of villagers who were previously working the fields. After beating her in a fight and having it explained to them that they were being lied to by a malicious yokai, things start going back to normal and balance is preserved. Yukari pops in to scoop up the unconscious Aristotle and points you in the direction of the last remaining disruption, while Socrates laughs at and mocks her fellow philosopher for being so confident in her understanding of the world around her because of things like "logic" and "reasoning" and "observation".
The last boss of the Incident is a second fight with Diogenes, who's gotten group of villagers to listen to her about how being human is overrated, and that they'd do well to stop caring about pretense and belief and live like dogs. Effectively the opposite problem presented by Aristotle. It's shown that she originally wasn't even trying during the first fight, and now that Reimu is actually trying to stop her from speaking she actually fights back.
After the fight, you get an epilogue where Yukari asks Reimu about her impression of them all, and eventually decides that they can be permitted to stay now that they've all been shown to be mad, and Socrates' constant insistence that you truly know nothing is more helpful to the preservation of belief than it is harmful. So the lot of them are allowed to set up a school a ways outside the human village, which nobody seriously attends. Partly because of their bad reputation, partly because they're always arguing, and partly because none of them can deliver a straight answer to any question.
Mechanically it's part visual novel and part boss rush, as the setting of the human village doesn't really lend itself to stages full of mooks trying to stop you. And of course there are some design concepts that could be workshopped if this would ever be seriously made. As it stands it's just a fun idea to rotate in your head and laugh about.
really good idea but i especially love the idea that after you beat all these fucking transgenderised clowns they're allowed to stay because if there's two things that the ancient greek philosophers were it was completely wrong and completely deranged

Star Wars: The Bad Batch: "A Different Approach"
Tumblr media
With Omega and Crosshair now free of Mount Tantiss, The Bad Batch takes a moment to shine a light on one of its most under explored character dynamics.
With their escape ship damaged and the Empire hot on their tail, Omega, Crosshair, and their newly adopted lurca hound, Batcher, have to rely on their wits and skills to survive and reunite with their former squad. However, Crosshair and Omega approach their predicament with profoundly different skillsets and philosophies and must learn to trust one another if they are to evade Doctor Hemlock's grip.
One of the most intriguing narrative promises that The Bad Batch's season two finale set up was the potential for an Omega/Crosshair team-up. Despite their shared history and family, neither clone has spent much time together free of their imprisonment on Mount Tantiss. In fact, pretty much their entire prior relationship was defined by Crosshair attempting to capture Omega and her brothers for the Empire. Even if Crosshair has now fully forsaken his former masters and is willing to look at Omega as less of a threat and more of a sometimes irritating little sister, the two have never really learned to work alongside one another in any real capacity.
This set up is ultimately what makes Ezra Nachman's script so entertaining and even fulfilling. This is a story that The Bad Batch needed to tell. Even if comparatively little happens in terms of the series' larger narrative arc, viewers deserve to see what kind of dynamic these two very different siblings have when they are forced to work together. And look, I'll always have a soft spot for villains/antagonists that slowly learn to open up and trust other people. Few things bring me more joy than seeing these kinds of character scenarios play out. So yes, "A Different Approach" may not be the most explosive, consequential, or thrilling episode The Bad Batch has produced, but I had a damn good time watching it all the same.
I love seeing Crosshair's frustrations with Omega's tendency for improvised schemes, especially since he'd much rather solve most of his problems with a few strategically placed blaster bolts. I loved even more getting to see Crosshair learn to appreciate his younger sisters very different approach to conflict, but also that there may still be a time and place for his particular set of skills. For a series that struggled so much with establishing character dynamics in its first season, "A Different Approach" showcases a much more narratively and emotionally confident approach to its storytelling.
That all being said, I do think that Omega's (and Crosshair's) reunion with the Hunter and Wrecker maybe comes too soon. Yes, I was undeniably moved and a little teary eyed at Omega and Wrecker's big happy, hug filled meeting at the episode's end, but it does feel like there was potential for more interesting storylines in the dynamics set up here. For all its risk taking, The Bad Batch seems to have a terminal need to return to something resembling its original status quo. Sure, this may be the most shaken up the squad has ever been in the series, but I'd love to see Jennifer Corbett and Brad Rau try and let different character dynamics exist for a bit longer than a few episodes at a time.
Score: B+

Superboys Part One Excerpt -
Jason Todd explains Santa Claus :
"Hello everybody!" says Bruce, "Sorry we're late! How's the food?"
"The appetizers are great," says Jason, "I ordered you the salmon."
"No complaints here," says Bruce. "Hello, James, how are you this evening?"
"I'm doing okay. I don't quite understand all this but I had fun at the dunking booth. I put Santa in the water three times."
"I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. But what about this do you not understand?"
"I guess just holidays in general. I know the common holidays, but some of this stuff is just very far-fetched. Even Superman can't visit every child in the world delivering gifts in one night. And what's with the flying reindeer? Is that a metaphor or a metadeer?"
"I could too!" huffs Clark.
"I know Santa isn't real, but Lex has been trying to rationalize it," says Hemlock. "Are all holidays about deceiving people? I know Thanksgiving is a load of horseshit. The actual history is a lot more violent and bloody than different peoples coming together for a feast. Europeans in colonial outposts were starving for three years, dying off and killing all the indigenous peoples around them so they could take their food. I think there was even cannibalism involved at some point."
"Lex," Bruce says with disappointment dripping from the name. "What did his programming include?"
"High school level American History, although I wouldn't be surprised if he learned some of that on his own. He does like to read. However the reality and non-reality of Santa was never touched on in his programming. That is entirely his conclusion."
"What makes you think Santa's not real?" Jay asks gently.
"It's just a story based on commercialized folklore. There's a big debate over whether Saint Nicholas was even a real person, but even if he was, he wasn't a 'jolly old elf'. Elves aren't real."
"Most people think Greek Gods aren't real, but I happen to know a daughter of Zeus," says Clark, "and Adonis here is a grandson of Apollo. Maybe some stories are fantastical but still based in truth."
"I still don't believe Santa's real," says Hemlock.
"You're right," says Jason, "He's not real. But the idea of him is. The concept that being good will reward you in the long run? That's real. The idea that working hard all year to bring happiness to others is worthwhile? That's real. While the person of Santa may not be factual, the idea of Santa is. That's why we have stories about him. To communicate the universal concepts of kindness and charity."
"What about Krampus?" says Hemlock, "What reality does he communicate?"
"He represents the idea that evil-doers will suffer for their crimes. Entire laws are made with that philosophy and so are some vigilantes."
"So Krampus punishing bad kids communicates realities like Red Hood punishing bad adults?"
Bruce looks horrified, but Jason and Jay laugh. "Yeah, Kiddo," says Jay. "Just like that. Batman too. He used to scare the adults more than anybody until your pops came along."
"Leave Batman out of this," says Bruce. "I'm sure he wouldn't like to be compared to a demon that flays the skin off children."
"Bad children," says Hemlock. "There's a big difference."
"Yes, one is a subcategory," says Lex. "Even 'bad' children deserve their day in court before judgement is determined. Isn't that right, Clark?"
"I'm uncomfortable with this conversation," says Clark.

MerGana and How Their Extremism May Follow Vulgate/Robert de Boron's Good vs. Evil Story
I think making bbcMorgana's first acts in S3 and S4 of saying that it was good that women and children of camelot will die was a fascinating and deliberate choice of making sure she was ireedemable and "evil" in the eyes of the audience.
The framing of bbcMorgana as killer of innocents (even when she was just following bbcMorgause's orders) in juxtaposition of bbcMerlin as vigilante executioner of treasonous criminals makes the audience lean more favorably towards bbcMerlin's extremism.
Writing bbcMorgana as one who takes pleasure in the suffering of others also enabled the producers to makes sure that the audience can forgive bbcMerlin's own crimes because he does it with obvious anguish.
............
Points to consider though:
BbcMorgana was educated for one year that what she was doing was right and justified. Based on her intimate knowledge if the peopleof Camelot, they are all complicit in the deaths of millions of the magic race and their allies. Her extremist training under bbcMorgause amplified that drive to punish all and then rejoice in their downfall. The bbcMorgana who cared for the wellbeing of Camelot already died when she was executed without trial and due cause (basically assassinated) for the sake of the Kingdom. (Remember, hemlock has no antidote)
BbcMerlin's extremism allowed him to bypass laws that even Camelot held dear. But since he does this with anguish, sorrow and burden of destiny/god's will then, he is forgiven and justified by the watchers of his acts even though he usually held the metaphorical gun at point blank range and then called it "self-defense"
............
I would say the merlinbbc show matches with the way The Story of Merlin was written in Robert de Boron tradition and the Vulgate. The clear distinction between good and evil in these classic literature was always "light and dark", "hatred and love."
Commiting heinous acts in "wrath, bitterness and revenge" "and taking pleasure in suffering" was the "work of the devil" "letting the devil into one's heart" (as the case of vulgate!merlin's conception)
And committing heinous acts while in anguish is technically acceptable in the eyes of destiny and the christian god. (As was the case of robertdeboron!merlin assisting in arthur's and ector de maris's conception)
...........
Then there is an argument that the show followed the heavily christian vulgate philosophy of good and evil all along?
That other philosophies and ideas which revolve around good/evil, light/dark, hatred/love being in constant balance should not be applied to the show because classic arthuriana doesnt use them?
..................
Redemption, also leans on the idea of bbcMerlin spreading the "good word" to the others. That the unbelievers will be saved if they join him in backing the One and Only Savior and King. If they don't and if they fight against it then there will be a judgement. It is never the other way around despite the unbelievers also having valid justification. As expected this reflects the highly christian messaging of the classic source material too.
Then if other watchers lean/sympathise more towards the motivations and actions of the "antagonists," "the unbelievers," "members of the old religion that fight against the prophecy" then they are "letting evil prevail" and "you dont understand the objective of the story"
Would it also mean that such antagonist-sympathetic fandom wank are technically not worth rehashing because it would be too rooted in actual historicity/real life instead of the classic arthurian mythology and christian influences that the show was based on?
.............
Anyhow the next time you hear people saying that the merlin bbc writers were stupid and didnt know what they were doing, please reconsider.

Hemlock.
A poisonous flower that causes paralysis and, like all good things in life, death. The flower used to put Socrates to sleep for his moral philosophy. You’ve probably heard of it. Film, fiction, history, philosophy, botany, floriography, all that good stuff.
But what if I told you that there was a man. A man that wants nothing more than to be relieved of his curse. To be held, and to hold. A man that’s seen things no living, breathing being should ever have to witness, things that have shaken him to the core.
A man with skin of the very plant I’ve aforementioned and strikingly bright eyes of emerald. With hair of gold and with hands that tremble in anxiety, coated with drops of blood like the wake of an injured soldier, trekking through snow in the winter.
A man who knows nothing but suffering, nothing of peace or a restful sleep. A man plagued by the things he’s seen, the mistakes he’s made, the nightmares that dance in his mind to the cruel melody of his own heartbeat.
Can you imagine living like that, my dear reader? Having a life that follows the grace and beauty of a train wreck? A life as poetic as a car crash? A life full of misery, of shame, of blood? Living in constant fear of who you are, of a curse you’re bound to like how Ivy clings to a dying tree?
Hm. Me neither.

A/N!!: Character credit (Ailean-Conall Hemlock) to @v-3-ll-1-ch-0-r / @v-3-ll-1-g-0-r-3 !! Idk I wrote this off the cuff with Alfred Hitchcock’s voice narrating the whole thing.

It’s not Saw’s fault. I know we’re upset, but hear me out:
Listen, I’m upset with Saw, too, but mostly because of how dismissive he was towards Hunter and Tech when they asked him to please not blow up the base so they could have a chance to find their brother. Saw taking out Tarkin and Hemlock would have been a good thing if it had worked! It’s just that the batch and Saw being there at the same time messed up both of their plans, and they have different goals. The batch is trying to survive and save their own without really disrupting the empire, while Saw really just wants to hit the empire where it hurts; them being there at the same time throws those goals into conflict and, ultimately, both lose. And, in a way, that conflict sheds light on the weak points of both philosophies.
Being focused solely on keeping your own people safe doesn’t make the galaxy itself a safe place for them, because the people who are making it dangerous will still be around making it more dangerous all the time, meaning that no one is ever really safe, not even the people you’re trying to protect. Doing the Luthen Rael thing and being focused solely on hitting the villains where it hurts and bringing them down by any means necessary guarantees that the villains aren’t the only people who are going to be hurt; it’s a satisfying and effective way to fight back, but it can hurt innocent people and tear innocent families apart.
So, yes, Saw did mess the Batch’s plans up and put some events into motion, but if we’re going to blame anyone for Tech falling, we should be blaming Tarkin. He’s the one who ordered air support to shoot the train car down knowing that it was going to get his own men killed, and that’s ultimately why Tech ended up dangling from that repel line.
Edit: I also wanted to add that Saw is also acting out of a place of trauma. I don’t agree with all of methods, but there’s a reason he is the way he is. That, and I’ve actually got a bit of a working theory (one of about five) that Saw and his crew maybe picked Tech up and/or caught him.
