Subtext and Culture, Young Royals, Season 3, Episode 4
Last episode ended with Simon coming home to a smashed window, this episode starts the morning after, Simon takes the bus to school, while Wilhelm is anxiously waiting for him.
Tumblr media
Culture: At a high school level in Sweden, there's national tests in Swedish, English, and Math. Like everywhere else, the purpose of these tests is not only to grade students, but to align all schools across the country to combat grade inflation.
Blink and you miss it: Vincent is trying to cheat by looking at Nils' answers.
Blink and you miss it: Vincent draws a dick in the gravel while waiting for the others to be done with the test.
Subtext: This entire episode is overflowing with examples of privilege. For Vincent, and many other rich kids like him, studying and learning doesn't matter, they'll graduate regardless, so he doesn't care about the exam, he only cares about the graduation party.
Cinematography: Even with Felice and friends being completely blurred out in the background, you can still see Stella and Fredrika turning to look at Sara, and then turning their backs on her.
Culture: In the US, a lot of people are using "socialism" as a catch-all phrase which means politics they don't agree with, regardless of its actual ideology. Likewise, in Sweden, a lot of people use "communist" in the same way about generally left-wing politics, which is what Vincent is doing here.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Wilhelm asks Simon if he can reconcile the conflict of dating a royal while being anti-monarchy, but the real question is of course if Wilhelm can reconcile the conflict in himself.
Subtext: This is where the show's political stance shines through, and this argument, that Wilhelm wasn't allowed to choose his life for himself, is the main argument they're gonna use in the finale.
Subtext: Wilhelm is weakly defending the monarchy, but just ends up repeating what his mother told him; it's a privilege, not a punishment, but does he believe it himself?
Subtext: The letter-to-yourself plot is mainly there in order to help August along his redemption arc, but here the show is using it to reinforce the point of the previous scene. Who does Wilhelm want to become? Does he have a choice?
Tumblr media
Culture: In Sweden, Säkerhetspolisen, SÄPO, is the government agency in charge of national security, which includes providing security and assigning bodyguards to the royal family.
Subtext: Note the great use of passive voice here by Farima to avoid taking responsibility for the decision to force August to join the birthday foundation event. She's also expertly bargaining with Wilhelm to get what she wants.
Subtext: We know it was the far-right assholes who posted comments to Simon's videos a couple of episodes ago.
Blink and you miss it: Jan-Olof really perks up when Linda talks about moving to Gothenburg, because that would probably mean the end to the relationship between Wilhelm and Simon, which would solve all of his current problems.
Subtext: Like Farima, he bargains with Linda and Simon to get what he wants, for Simon to stop posting things to social media. It's almost as if their strategy was to do nothing at the start, waiting for things to blow up so they could swoop in, help out, and start making demands in exchange...
Blink and you miss it: The option to inactivate and hide your social media account is right there, but of course Simon has to choose to delete everything, because it will cause more drama and anguish.
Tumblr media
Blink and you miss it: Fencing! Woohoo! I did fencing for five years as a kid until 8th grade or something, but I only did foil, and not épée like these students. I have absolutely no idea where these two are coming from or going to though, where would they practice? Is there a hidden fencing hall somewhere on the grounds that we haven't seen yet? How many kids at Hillerska are fencing? Also, he's carrying a practice blade and not an electric competition blade, so that checks out. Of the three types of modern fencing, épée is unique in that the entire body counts as a valid target, while in foil only the torso counts, and in sabre only the upper half counts. Oh wow, it looks like the gear is now wireless and every fencer carries their own indicator lights. Cool! Back in my day you had to be strapped in with a cord for competitions.
This tumblr is now about French School fencing. Allez! Touché!
Subtext: The narrative is that it's perfectly ok for the crown prince to be gay, as long as he's not gay gay.
Culture: The show keeps saying this, but in real world Sweden it's no longer the case. Supporting los jibbities is viewed as a completely mainstream and inoffensive opinion, on par with supporting human rights in general.
Subtext: Another example of privilege is being in a position to do a lot of good, and then just not caring about it. Simon is fighting for the causes he believes in, so seeing Wilhelm just casually throw it away is extremely disappointing for him.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Unlike Vincent, August is actually a natural leader, someone people listen to, which is why he manages to quiet down the room when Vincent is unable to. Maybe a good quality in a future king?
Subtext: Simon is continuing the argument from before. Wilhelm could have shown solidarity with mental health causes or LGBT causes, but chose not to. However, he immediately decided to join in solidarity with the other rich kids protesting the school rules, which is rather selfish.
Subtext: Colour theory! Sara in purple, because part of the reason she's back at school is that August asked her to? And Simon in yellow, because he sure isn't loving Wilhelm very much right now.
Subtext: Just a reminder that Sara has actually been completely out of the loop since the end of season 2. She has no idea about the school rules, what's happened at home, how it's going with Simon and Wilhelm, or what's happening at school.
Tumblr media
Blink and you miss it: Fredrika is so close to stop striking as soon as she's threatened with repercussions.
Subtext: I keep hammering this point home: The culture is in the walls, it's not something some of the kids made up. The visiting alumni were also hazed as new students and kept it going as third years. Same for the parents of all these kids. They're all part of the system, they all kept the cycles of abuse going, because they want the school to be like that.
Subtext: Privilege is thinking you can get things your way with almost no effort. None of these kids have ever struggled or protested something for real and then not been given what they wanted, so they seriously believed they'd win immediately.
Subtext: Another theme of this season is bringing secrets out in the open. We've all seen August struggling with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder since season 1, but no-one has ever called it out and put words on it, until Simon immediately recognizes it and calls it out.
Subtext: ...while the rich kids are just stuck in denial, because eating disorders is for poor people or something, it's not something that happens to them. And if it did, you certainly wouldn't admit it to anyone else.
Subtext: August tries to jokingly fend off Nils because he doesn't want anyone to know that the letter actually meant something to him, until Nils pushes too hard, and August punches him.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Vincent talked a big game about striking in solidarity, but when they're caught as hilariously unprepared as they are, they're not pooling their resources in solidarity with each other, and instead resort to selling them to the highest bidder. Capitalism in a nutshell, illustrated perfectly by the behaviour of spoiled rich kids. Also, pet peeve, the English word for the currency of Sweden is "kronor", not "crowns".
Lost in translation: They're actually repeating a single word in Swedish, "svikare", which is pretty hard to translate. The verb, "svika", is a bit worse than letting someone down, but not as bad as betraying someone. The adjective, "besviken" typically means disappointed. So "svikare" means a person who is letting other people down, disappointing them, or betraying them.
Subtext: The culture is in the walls of the place, but the kids are also pretty damn complicit in continuing all the shitty traditions. This looks like a game of strip poker or truth or dare that went off the rails and just resulted in more bullying, with everyone joining in.
Subtext: The other girls are upset with Felice because she broke the code. You don't snitch to outsiders, you don't tell the truth, you keep up appearances.
Blink and you miss it: Henry won the potato chip auction, happily ate the entire bag, and passed out in a chair, clutching the bag. Mmmm, sourcream and onion.
Subtext: Speaking of closing ranks towards the outside, this also applies to this strike. It would be bad PR for the school if anyone outside found out that it happened, so it's better to solve it quietly and discreetly. Vanessa can trust the kids not to snitch. Vincent is also right, the parents, who are paying the tuition fees, are on their side.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Felice can't be seen talking to Sara, so she checks that the coast is clear, and then drags Sara into a private bathroom to have their conversation.
Subtext: Likewise, Sara was probably Felice's first real friend.
Subtext: Nice little foreshadowing. I would have loved seeing Simon's drawing though!
Subtext: Well, he could have just made his social media private, but the show has to maximize the drama, so here we are, piling on more examples of how Simon is losing himself to the monarchy, that maybe he can't reconcile the conflict.
Tumblr media
Subtext: Erik spent three years living at Hillerska, of course he wouldn't have told his then twelve year old kid brother about all the shit going on at the school. August spent an entire year living with Erik at the school, seeing what went on first hand, so of course he knows a side of Erik that Wilhelm doesn't.
Subtext: August has been trying to keep his mouth shut and avoid Wilhelm, but since they have yet another fight, he decides to drop the bomb about Erik to hurt Wilhelm.
Subtext: Again, the culture is in the walls. This is not something that only Erik's class did, once. It's probably been happening to all the boys for decades. It happened to the current second-year students, it happened to Erik, and lots of students before him who kept this shitty initiation tradition going.
Culture: Let's talk about the gay porn hazing a bit more. To me, this is an urban legend. I heard about it when I was a teenager back in the 90's, but I don't personally know anyone it happened to, or anyone who did it to anyone else. It was always hearsay, it happened to a friend of a friend's brother, or a classmate's cousin's friend or something similar, as is typical of urban legends.
Let's also make one thing absolutely clear: It doesn't work. The homophobic idea behind this shit is that if you are forced to watch gay porn and get a boner, you are gay, and if you don't, you're straight. But that is actually not true, erections don't work that way, and the fear of being found out is quite the boner killer. Also, what if you like guys, but the guys in the porno aren't your type? There's just so many ignorant misconceptions behind this idea.
I've also seen a lot of fan comments that keep playing into this ignorance; that the only reason Nils decided to stop the tradition was because he obviously failed it. Or that the only reason August is against it is because he failed, and the only reason he failed is because he's secretly not straight. No. Remember that the test doesn't work. Nils probably passed, despite actually being gay. August might have failed, despite being completely straight. Regardless of what happened, they both found it humiliating, and that is why they made a pact to stop it.

MISS ANNNNAAAAA! 😘 How have you been? I do hope that you've been well and alright during the US tax season and news about sweet Hoberto's enlistment. Me and my old supervisor were too busy this week to discuss it.
I saw the lovely hug anon's message that was sent in a little bit ago and I had to drop in and say congrats 🎉 and that we all aspire to have our own romance that can inspire all the dreams of other lonely people 🥹. My cold heart fluttered while reading it.
It did kind of inspire me to drop in myself to let you know that we all do genuinely appreciate this little space you've made for everyone and that you and all the lovely anons and non-anons that respond genuinely help others process thoughts and life and all that stuff.
I genuinely don't know if you remember me either but, I would drop in as the accounting/🎓 graduate anon. I legit don't even remember the last ask I had sent you but, I have been well and still enjoy having your notifications on (it gives me plenty of joy in my down time or destressing time). 😁 I have done a bunch though since my last (remembered) ask -
That internship turned into an extended long-term position - I've been interning remotely with them since summer of 2022
Graduated w/ honors and now on track to graduate with my Masters in Taxation this December
Currently also working PT under my business school's admin as a tutor for my department - now known by most staff and made some really good connections for the future
Secured an internship with one of the top 4 accounting firms this summer (and expecting a FT offer with the big bucks)
Won a CPA exam materials scholarship (nearly $3k worth)
Submitted my application to sit for the CPA (basically the highest accounting credential to receive) exam and will be sitting for the first section by November
So truly, I'm always sending the biggest thanks to you and everyone else for giving me all the motivation and confidence boosters the last time because they've really made an impact for me! I love you guys and gals and anything you all go by and wish everyone the best. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
(I do apologize for how long this got though, once I started I apparently couldn't stop)
OMG accounting/🎓 graduate anon!
first of all, of course i remember you 💕
second of all -- hell YES to all of these wins? that CPA exam scholarship is a huge deal and i know you will crush that exam come november. i'm so glad you and other anons come here to share your wins because let's be for real, the world is forever on fire and it's nice to know good shit is happening to good people.
we all need that reminder from time to time 😭
as for hobi going off into his military assignment: i'm sad. i'm not even gonna sugarcoat it 😂 but it's a matter of duty and pride and i support him and all the members as they complete their service. i mean, i don't have to be happy about it but i understand. it'll get easier once we get some updates from him. for now, sad girl hours are open 😭

i remember the first piece of music i ever wrote. i was in sixth grade. the piece was comprised solely of 2nd inversion chords (a reorganized triad with the 5th as the lowest note). i did not know this distinction at the time. i didn't know the specific chords i was playing. all i knew is that i liked the sound of it. i liked how it felt to play. it felt impressive. yet, it still didn't feel like it was mine. it didn't feel like it was my decision to write it.
my parents are both professional musicians. my mother, a music teacher, and my father, a drummer. they are both complex individuals, but as parents, they mostly did their collective best. they had three children together: my older sister, Anna, my older brother, Max, and then me (Miles).
when we were 10, 8, and 4 (respectively), my parents enrolled us in the local swim team despite our protests against it. why would we want to attend a 2-hour swim practice every week night, and wake up at 5am every Saturday for meets during the summer months. we repeated that same schedule for the next 10 years.
when i was in 1st grade, my mother enrolled me in piano lessons. in 3rd grade, i was enrolled in violin lessons. 6th grade, i started drum lessons. 8th grade, voice lessons. it was never my choice. i never questioned it, either. i just assumed that this was what every kid did.
as a result of the high number of activities (in addition to an ADHD diagnosis that my parents had no idea how handle), my school grades were absolutely terrible. why would i care about school when the clearly more important tasks were outside of it. my parents would get messages from my teachers about missing assignments, and then interrogate me as to why i hadn't finished the work.
on top of juggling everything else, i was told that i was going to be joining a children's theater company in 7th grade (which my sister had done a few years prior). for two years during the spring and autumn seasons, i rehearsed every other night in a town 50 minutes away. each season, our company performed in over 30 locations across the Midwest. at the end of my fourth season, i was about to enter high school, where bigger and better performances lied ahead. my mother graciously allowed me to retire from the children's theater.
high school began, and with it started musicals, band, choir, marching band, jazz band, madrigal, vocal jazz (yes really), chordsmen, percussion ensemble, pep band, drama club, etc. my brain was noisy. so many things to do. i became an expert at compartmentalization. why think about school when i had a rehearsal right afterwards? why think about a big exam on Friday when i had a performance on Saturday? my GPA was awful and grades and assignments were now viewable online thanks to a website called Infinite Campus. my mother would check every day. she would ask me about a late assignment or bad grade every day. i was given a tutor. i was to go there every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening before any rehearsals. this tutor, however, soon became one of my best friends.
she was my neighbor across the street. she had never been a tutor before. as our sessions began, she quickly realized that i was overwhelmed with every aspect of my life. she would use these sessions as moments to teach me how to relax, refocus, and ease the burden of the world. yes, she taught me how to take notes and study for school, but she also taught me how to cook. she taught me how to enjoy the simplest and quietest moments of life. she became my second mother, and still is to this day.
all that said, the damage to my grades at this point was irreversible. i ended high school with a ~1.9 GPA. i had absolutely no clue what to do with my life. i applied, auditioned, and was accepted to a few music programs in the state of Wisconsin, but i was completely and utterly burnt out with music. i had no energy left to be interested or engaged in what felt like a new way my parents found to control the direction of my life.
my ultimate rebellion against my parents wasn't drugs or alcohol (which i certainly did partake in to ease the stress in both middle school and high school), it was attending the local community college with the goal of becoming a business major. i had been conditioned my entire life to focus on music so this decision was as liberating as it was depressing. in defiance of my parents' wishes, i spent the next two years trying to become a "Business Person" (whatever that means).
surprisingly, i became a good student during community college. without the constant slew of extra-curricular activities, i was able to focus on my school work and study. to maintain consistency, i still saw my tutor twice a week. it was during one of those sessions that i showed my tutor a piece of music i was working on for a friend's school game project. after listening, she turned to me and said "you need to pursue music. stop kidding yourself, Miles." i applied for music school the following week and attended the next fall. i have a degree in music composition now. i am a full time composer and teacher now.
i think what i needed all along was for someone other than my parents tell me to pursue music. to feel like that decision came from anyone besides them. now i fool myself every day into thinking that it was my choice, and not my parents'. i am grateful for all of the training and support they gave me growing up. at the same time, i sometimes wish i could have stumbled upon music organically rather than having been forced to do it. i wish i could have been a normal kid for a little while.
my pursuit of a career in music took me all across the country. it led me to multiple ERs, unsolved chronic symptoms, suicidal ideation, therapists, anti-depressants, and thousands of dollars of medical debt. that's a story for another time though.
i spent a good amount of my life thinking i was stupid because i didn't have aptitude in other subjects. it became so entrenched in my mind that i still think i'm stupid sometimes, and that really hurts. that did some damage! wow! my tip for parents: let your kid explore subjects that you aren't interested in. sometimes they just need to find things out for themselves. in other words, sometimes you need to let them "fuck around and find out."
i am the result of an extremely privileged youth. my middle-class parents spent most of their money and time on their children. they loved me enough to sacrifice their busy schedules for my benefit. that is something a lot of people don't have growing up, and, as i've said already, i am very grateful.
if you made it this far into reading this, i am sorry.

BARBIIIELLA’s GUIDE TO EXAMS!
So basically in two weeks it’s going to be exam season for me since I’m in college and I’ve been thinking a lot about it. So I decided why not make a guide in case anyone else is struggling with how they should start or approach this! Hopefully this can help give any of you motivation or some ideas on where to start!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. MAKE A CALENDAR/SCHEDULE
I promise you, planning everything out will make your life so much easier! Thinking about when you should do what or when to start studying for what will get you on the right track. I personally find it easier to get all my assignments done and then start studying for my exams (which I’ve already done it worked out great) because it just made me feel way less stressed which I’m sure many others also feel!
First I start by writing all my class subjects so I don’t miss out any and then I start planning which exam needs a lot of time to prepare for and which one’s I already understand really well so not as much time should be needed. To make it more fun or appealing I like drawing on my schedule to make it look all pretty and adding positive comments! You can add stickers or colour, whatever makes you feel the best!!
Planning everything out will also not make you cram last minute and cramming everything in a few days is exhausting and so mentally draining.
2. HAVE FOOD WITH YOU!
It’s super important to stay hydrated and to eat while studying! You are working hard after all so it’s good to take care of yourself! Giving yourself something you really love will also make the studying experience more fun and you deserve it
3. GET SOME COMPANY
It’s fun to study with friends and it can put you in a good mood too! But if you have no one to study with and you’d still like to have someone studying with you, watch study with me’s! That’s what I usually do and they work just as well. What I love about study with me’s are that they’re so motivating! Whenever I starts to lose hope, I can always watch the other person working so hard and it puts me right back to work. If they can do it, so can I! That’s what I always tell myself.
4. HAVE MOTIVATION/GOALS
Having a goal in mind while studying or just seeing my Pinterest boards inspire me so much more and really gets me to study and work well. When I have a goal in mind, studying to make sure I can reach that goal becomes such a big priority that I feel unstoppable! Wether it’s going on vacation after your exams are done or having a whole self care month, if you really want it then you can have it! Getting inspired by others will just make you feel so much better! For inspiration I go on Pinterest or I check out whoever I’m following because they all have such amazing content! I’m pretty sure my following list is public but if you’d like my Pinterest it’s lethalrouge
and that’s it! I hope you found this post helpful and I know we can do amazing on our exams!! <3

how BiNu confessed
Hello! I’m back~ It’s exam season but here I am. I hope you guys like it! Don’t be shy and request anything if you would like.
Theme: Fluff
Eunwoo
hey, I’m sorry I’m busy today! Just reminding you I love you
A smile painted your face as you sent a reply back to your boyfriend, Eunwoo. You were a little sad that Eunwoo had a schedule today but it is what it is right? It’s his job after all. Although you missed seeing him, he always made an effort to video call every night and occasionally would drop by your apartment at night before heading back to the dorms. He always tried his best and for that you loved him dearly.
That’s alright! I’ll enjoy this nice day for the both of us~ Keep working hard! I love you
After sending your message, you were immediately met with a cute emoticon. Giggling like a 5 year old, you sent one back. Truthfully everyday seemed like a dream. It was such a blessing you met Eunwoo and the fact you were in a relationship with him still felt surreal. He was such a caring and selfless man, always considerate and hard working. When you first met him, it was a little hard to believe how polite and caring of a human being he was. You didn’t know if he acted this way because he had an image to up hold or not. But your doubt was eventually proven wrong after some drinks and a very real and raw conversation.
You still remember the smell and sounds of the tent bar. The loud business men coming to drink after a long day of work, the group college students ignoring their final assignments and the smell of soju. Eunwoo and you weren’t very close friends back then and it was certainly awkward when your mutual friend didn’t show up. However 3 bottles of soju seemed to do the trick and helped you both let loose and start talking about your dreams and insecurities. It was refreshing getting to know Eunwoo and his mind. At the moment you really admired him as a person, how hard working he was and how considerate he was. You felt horrible for misjudging him and doubting him. It was probably then when your feelings for him started.
It took eight more months for anything to actually start. You tried your hardest to stop your feelings for him as you didn’t want them ruining your friendship. Anyway, how could he feel the same way about you anyway? That’s why you were taken aback when you were both resting on the couch on your apartment and he suddenly became agitated. You had invited some friends over just to have a little breather and you were all playing charades.
At first you thought he was just frustrated because his team couldn’t play for shit and yours won as the game ended with 9-5. Rocky had you on his back as you both celebrated your win with your two other teammates. You were laughing while holding Rocky tightly so you wouldn’t fall as he began dancing when you felt an icy stare coming from somewhere. Your eyes met Eunwoo’s and you were slightly taken aback by the glare he held on his face. Confused, you watch him flee to the kitchen. You got off Rocky as gave another ‘whoop’ before making a beeline to the kitchen.
“Look, if I’ve done anything wrong, let me know. I can’t read your mind and glaring won’t help either ok?” You spoke bluntly as you found it rare that he would be this childish.
“I just- I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to glare.” He said as he brushed his hair back and swallowing a lump in his throat.
“Well I can still see your not in a very good mood. Do you want to step out and talk about it?” You offered with a smile while taking his hand and staring into his eyes. You swear you melted right then and there. He seemed to think about it before nodding and letting you lead the way to the door.
“Damn it, it’s cold” you muttered to yourself as you left the warmth of your apartment. You felt a pair of arms wrap around you and suddenly it felt like you were in a sauna. Trying to get rid of the blush on your cheeks, you wriggle out of his embrace.
“Don’t worry, I’ll survive. Now tell me what’s been plaguing your mind.”  You said turning around, trying to not be flustered. Although you felt safe in his arms; as if you belonged, you didn’t want to give yourself false hope. To him it might just be an innocent hug but it sent butterflies to your stomach.
“I have feelings for someone and I don’t think they’ll return them.” He said as he stepped back and met your eyes. You felt your stomach drop. Ignoring the slight pain in your chest, you turn to look at him as he stares back at you.
“Ahh, I see. How would you know if you haven’t heard that person’s answer? There’s a 50% chance they’ll return them or not. But seeing as to how you act like the perfect gentleman, the chances are probably higher.” You smiled before looking away, trying to not let him see the slight pain in your face.
“Is that so?” He said as he moved to were your eyes were looking off to and waited until your eyes met his. “What are the chances of you returning my feelings?”
“What?” Honestly, you were so confused. What was happening? Is what you were thinking happening? He smiled before holding your hand in his.
“I like you Y/N” A blush seem to creep on both of your faces. Unable to meet his gaze, you nod.
“Me too” You felt time stop as he smiled at you and pulled you into a tight embrace against his chest.
“Thank god.” He sighed in relief before planting a light peck on your lips.
Tumblr media
Moonbin
“You made all this?” Moonbin said with excitement and disbelief as he stared at the six lunch boxes in front of him; one for each member of Astro. “Thank you so much!” And with that, you were engulfed into a big bear hug.
You dramatically gasp for breath before he pulls away and places a kiss on your forehead. Smiling up at the man, you realise how awfully tired he looked. A pout soon graced your face, Moonbin noticing immediately. He stroked you hair and put his chin on your head, pulling you into a gentle and warm hug.
“I’m alright. I have your food to energise me through the day! Don’t worry about me.” He said gently.
“I know I shouldn’t worry, I just wish you could have a day off and sleep like sleeping beauty. To rest properly.” You mumbled into his shirt. You feel him kiss you head before pulling away and looking into your eyes.
“My day off’s on Sunday, I’ll make sure to sleep like the dead.” He laughed before turning to the door “I’m super late! I’ll text you when I get there and when I should be home. I love you~” And with a kiss goodbye, he was out the door.
Watching him leave in a rush always made you laugh, his poor time management was always the product of him sleeping in. It always worried you how he’d come home late and leave early for his schedules. He practiced like crazy as well. It also reminded you of when you first met.
Your friend wanted to introduce you to a dancer as you expressed an interest in it. You were hesitant, as your interest was only a passing comment and not meant to be taken seriously, however you also suspected this was your friend’s way of setting you up with someone. They had been constantly asking you if you were seeing anyone for the past year. You were too busy with your part time job and being a full time student in culinary school. With some persuasion, you finally went with your friend to meet this man. Honestly you kind of judged Moonbin when he was 20 minutes late. You were thinking about how you could have been studying for an upcoming exam and here you were, waiting for some dude. However after talking to man, you seemed to become smitten with him. He was funny and gentle but was also ready to fight with anyone who thought cats were annoying.
As cheesy as it is to say, time seemed to stop. You didn’t really pay mind to your friend leaving you two alone and you also didn’t realise the sun was already beginning to set. You realised that this man was a breath of fresh air to you so when he asked for you number as you were both about to part ways, you absolutely did not hesitate.
Your relationship was little complicated for the next 4 months. It was like you were a couple but at the same time you weren’t official. Both of you would go on dates, talk late at night and would have movie nights in your apartment. You both knew that each other was interested but neither had actually spoken about it. It was a strange and weird situation to be in.
At first it made you heart flutter every time your hands would brush past each others or when your faces would be so close to a kiss. But soon you grew a little tired of it. Moonbin seemed to be the person you could count on whenever you wanted to rant about school or your co workers and would always taste you dishes with very honest feedback, however you were tired of this wishy washy relationship you both had. As much as you knew that Moonbin was a kind and caring man, you insecurities started to overtake your mind. You often wondered if he was like this another girl, he was an awfully handsome and talented man so who wouldn’t want to have him?
You began to think he only saw you as some fun on the side.
Your chain of thought was disrupted when you heard a knock at your door. Ah, that’s right, Moonbin said he was coming over after recording. Opening the door, you were greeted with a smile that could easily turn you into a puddle. He had said he couldn’t stay long as he needed to back at the dorms before 10pm. A little confused as to why he would bother coming over if he needed to leave in 45 minutes, you followed him into the apartment.
“Then why are you coming to visit then silly?” You said in a playful tone as you offered him some gimbap you made. You were shocked when he rejected them. What as going on? Moonbin rejecting food? And then it dawned on you. He was probably gonna tell you that he wasn’t interested and only saw you as friend.
“I’m sorry I should have done this earlier” You braced yourself for the rejection as your hands found the hem of you shirt and played around with it. He looked into you eyes with an intensity you had never seen before and it made you nervous. As you felt some tear beginning to form, you look away from his gaze.
“I like you. Like a lot. I’m sorry for not telling you early enough. I was just shy and didn’t know if you would like me back.” what? You looked back at him in confusion. Your mind went blank and you were left to just stare, no words seeming to form.
When you didn’t reply back, his head hung down for little bit before he looked back up at you with a bittersweet smile. “It’s ok, you don’t have to say anything. I just wanted to confess my feelings.” As he was about to reach for the door handle, you snapped out of your trance and rushed to stop him.
He was caught by surprise when he left your arms embrace him from the back. You didn’t trust yourself to talk to him with his eyes on you so you mumbled it into his back. “I like you too. I like so much. I didn’t know if you actually liked me or if you were just having some fun” He quickly turned around to your words and cupped your face.
“Of course I like you. How could I not?” Moonbin smiled as he kissed your forehead and then your lips.

Time Can Heal (4/ )
Season 2 | Abduction Arc | Canon Divergence | Angst
Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | AO3
Mulder realises his quest for the truth costs too much.
When I deleted the first fic blog I ended up deleting this chapter along with it. Most would have read this before I’m posting it so as there’s no missing chapters when the time comes to create a masterlist for it. Tagging @bevh78 because I’m unsure if they got round to reading it before I deleted it. And for anyone else who has yet to read it, this is the full chapter, you won’t be directed to ao3.
- - -
“So I said to him- What have you got there? He looks at me, looks at his friend and mutters nothing. So I give him a look, not believing him at all and the lad just bolts for it.”
“Hmm,” hums Mulder, trying to listen to the surveillance recording but also pay attention to his new partner’s story.
“So we cuff his friend, and I look at Ben- you met Ben?
“No, I don’t think so,” says Mulder turning up the volume on the recording.
“Oh, well you will soon enough. Anyway, I look at Ben wondering if we really have to chase this other guy.” The man laughs. “I don’t know about you but my knees just don’t have it in them to run anymore.”
Mulder smiles and nods like he understands that feeling.
He met Agent Moe Bocks on his first day, the partner Cavanagh mentioned. Bocks had been excited to work with Mulder, enthusiastically shaking his head and telling him that he couldn’t believe he was working with the Fox Mulder.
Mulder just smiled and nodded comfortably, not used to the level of excitement he was receiving. Most people did not nothing to hide their disappointed that being partnered, or even working alongside him. Not even Scully had managed it when she first met him but she was smart enough to hide it all an air of pleasantries.
He thought he would have been able to move on from her by now but she had followed him all the way to Minnesota. He still had urges to call her when he thought or read about something and he wanted to hear what she had to say about it. He got as far as picking up the phone before remembering.
He would fall back on his couch feeling sorry for himself.
You did this. You only have yourself to blame.
He guesses he got kind of lucky with Bocks. His new partner believed in aliens and UFOs, had people he knew in MUFON that regularly kept him updated about any UFO activity in the area.
But Bocks’ interest in it was fun and trivial. He believed in it all because he had a passion for it. He wasn’t interested in unearthing some deep government conspiracy, his sister had been abducted, neither had his last partner as far as Mulder was aware.
There was fun in Bocks’ belief. There was no fun in Mulder’s anymore.
“Anyway,” says Bocks, now finished with his stories. And people thought he could talk for hours. “You got much off that tape yet?”
Mulder shakes his head, throwing off the headphones.
“Just a load of shit,” he says, sighing and leaning back on the chair.
“Yeah, well…You’ll be out collaring people for walking the wrong way soon,” Bocks says with very little enthusiasm.
Mulder looks up at the ceiling. He never thought he would miss the Hoover Building but now, just short of a week, he would do anything to go back.
.:.:.:.:.:.
Three times is the charm. She ripped open, what would be, the final envelope with less rigor than she had the first two, already deciding that she would have to take the exams a fourth time.
But no. As she glanced over the scores she thought maybe there had been a mistake. She passed. Just. But she passed. For the first time in weeks Dana felt herself smile.
“You’ll be back at work soon?” her mother asked when she told her. Maggie had a mix of delight and apprehension in her voice.
Dana nodded enthusiastically. She was just happy to have a purpose again.
.:.:.:.:.:.:.
“You’ll have to be monitored,” Skinner tells her at their next meeting. “See how you go.”
“I feel better,” Dana tells him. And she did. After that night she doesn’t like to think about, she hadn’t had another nightmare since. She wanted to think that was her body’s way of telling her it was healing mentally now.
“You’ve been through trauma, Agent Scully. That stuff doesn’t just go away.”
Dana nods, of course she understands that. Yes, she’s healing but what if something on the field was to trigger her? She only needed to pass the exams once, she needs to do her job every day and if she can’t do that as efficiently and effectively then there is no reason for her to be here.
That scares her.
Her job is the only thing she has left now. Without it, what would she be?
“What are the conditions?” she asks.
Skinner sighs in relief and leans back in his chair.
“You are to attend counselling. Weekly.”
Dana nods but inside she is reeling. Counselling meant talking and Dana was never very good at that. Since she was a child she learnt how to bottle it all up until naturally it faded away. She found herself never needing to talk, talking wasted time.
“And if I don’t?”
Skinner seems prepared for this question.
“Then you’ll be decided unfit for the field.”
Desk duty, in other words. Surveillance, background checks, all the stuff she is extremely over-qualified for, stuff that would have her ripping out her hair at how mundane and simple it is. Making it the perfect consequence.
Understanding this, Dana nods in agreement, telling him she’ll go.
“Good,” says Skinner. “A placement opened up. Violent Crimes Section is looking for someone to fill the post.”
Dana feels her blood run cold at the mention of that department.
“I told them I had an agent looking for some field work,” Skinner continues. “The Agent in Charge would like to see you ASAP.”
“VCS, sir?” Dana asks, making sure she’s heard right.
Skinner nods. Then sighs.
“I know you and Agent Mulder didn’t form the greatest relationship with them when you worked together-“
“Agent Mulder,” Dana says, cutting Skinner short. “Agent Mulder didn’t form the greatest relationship with them.” She smiles reassuringly. “I’m sure it will be no issue. Is that all, sir?”
“That’s all.”
Dana says her thank yous and leaves as briskly as she can, ignoring the anxiety that swirls around in her stomach at the thought of being assigned to the VCS.
.:.:.:.:.:.:.
The bullpen area is empty when Dana enters, something she is incredibly grateful for. The Violent Crimes Section wasn’t the first on her list of places to be assigned.
The Eugene Tooms debacle had left both departments sour with each other, so much so that VCS didn’t work on the case once Tooms was released. Dana wasn’t sure what their reaction would be of her now.
She raps against the door of SAC KEVIN FULLER softly and waits to be called in.
“Come in.”
Dana pushes the door open. Inside sits a man she’s never seen before. His sandy-blonde hair styled perfectly, his suit fresh and new. He definitely looks down on people, Dana decides.
“You’re the agent AD Skinner told me about?” the SAC says, looking Dana up and down. She feels self-conscious standing under his gaze but tries not to show it.
“Yes, sir.”
He begins rooting through the files on his desk.
“Name?”
“Dana Scully.”
Fuller briefly stops what he’s doing, the name halting him before he quickly resumes.
“Scully,” he mulls over. He’s well aware of who she is. “Well, sit down,” he says when he notices she’s still standing up.
Dana quickly walks over to the chair, embarrassed by how fumbling and lacking initiative she’s appearing.
Control yourself, Dana.
Fuller finally pulls out her file. He places it on his desk and opens it up, his eyes immediately falling to where he suspected, surpassing all of her achievements, Dana notices with slight disappointment, and focuses upon one area.
A grin cracks across the SAC’s face.
“X-Files a bit too out there for you?”
Dana doesn’t find it funny.
“Agent Mulder left,” she answers simply and straight-faced. “Skinner saw no reason for me to stay on there any longer.”
“So I got saddled with you,” Fuller says, disdainfully.
Dana makes no comment.
Fuller looks down at her file again.
“You’re a pathologist,” he notes. “We rarely have any need for a pathologist here.”
“I think I’ve gathered enough experience to offer myself in other ways, sir.”
Fuller regards her. “Really?” he asks. He leans in closer. “Let me let you in on a little secret, Miss Scully.” Dana swallows feeling smaller and smaller with every second with this man. “Women don’t last very long in this department. The cases are too much for them. I’m not wasting my time by taking you on, am I?”
His intention was to make her small, to have her running back to Skinner and ask for another assignment. Well, Dana wasn’t going to run. She was going to stay and prove Fuller wrong.
“No, sir. You’re not.”
“Good,” Fuller answers, giving her another slimy grin. There was no way she was never going to like this man. He leans back in his chair again.
“There’s one other thing,” he says.
“Yes, sir?”
“This department is one of the more respected departments here. I want it known that I won’t let that reputation be tarnished by taking Mrs Spooky on board. Are we clear on that?”
She feels a familiar twang of hurt at the nickname, the same feeling she felt when Tom Colton brought it up. Nicknames and reputations spread around quickly here.
“Loud and clear, sir,” Dana answers.
“You’re desk is near the back wall, furthest away.”
Dana rises, taking his words as a dismissal.
“You’re on probation, Agent Scully.” Dana turns at the door watching as Fuller stands. “One mistake and you’re out.”
She nods, understanding, and leaves the office.
She has her own desk now, like she had always wanted, yet this isn’t a desk that fills her with the satisfaction she had hoped for.

Karasuno & College AU Pt. 1
School: Karasuno
Genre: headcanons, fluff, crack, slice of life
Warnings: mental health breakdowns
A/N: This is a Haikyuu!! Headcanon where the Karasuno first years attend the same college and experience their first semester. This is written under the assumption that they attend a Japanese college that follows an American college system. Lastly, most of these headcanons were based on our own personal experiences in college and from our friends.
Disclaimer: This is very...long LMAO. We’ve been working on this for the past 2 weeks on and off. We just had a lot of feelings but we had so much fun! We’re sorry but we hope you enjoy!!

HINATA SHOYO
Sports Communication Major
Gets scouted by a university’s volleyball team for either middle blocker/winged spiker
Procrastinates so HARD like does his essay that’s due at 8 am the night before. He PASSES his classes especially the ones for his major and what he is randomly interested in but he is still a mess when it comes to studying.
Though Hinata would be the person you see openly crying out of sadness and doom at 1am in the library
While he has gotten better in taking care of his body, however like any college student, he lives on redbull and coffee especially during finals.
Tries to not pull all nighters but will due to his procrastination and inability to get work done efficiently
Lives in the same dorm building as Kageyama but on different floors. They burst into each other’s rooms unannounced all the time since they’ve established long ago that they are best friends and do not give a fuck. They banter with each other 24/7 (their respective roommates have grown immune to their loudness and bickering.)
Hinata’s roommate is Inouka from Nekoma!! They both get along really well and are able to live well together so they stay roommates the rest of the years in college. Hinata is a little messier than Inuoka but he keeps his messes to his side that Inuoka never minds.
Their apartment is super wholesome bc since they’re always encouraging each other, they leave little notes like “You got this!!”, “Good luck on your exam!” or “You’re amazing and awesome! Don’t forget it!” Also, the apartment just looks really homey, very lived in.
He becomes kinda popular at school because he just ends up befriending all his classmates (and is even closer to the people in his major) and also because of being on the volleyball team!! Hinata gets recognized everywhere even when he’s off campus and everyone says hi to him, and he never minds.
As a freshman, he attends all of the freshman events and all the free events that happen every day Friday!!!! His favorite Friday event is when they get to stuff an animal (either their school mascot or another animal) and are able to dress it up and keep it! (His favorite is an owl dressed like a volleyball player that he named Little Giant)
Tries to get involved with other clubs but because of volleyball and his inability to juggle more than 3 things, he doesn’t (but still ends up becoming friends with the people in the club bc they think he’s so friendly and fun)
Ends up going to a lot of events held by the clubs he’s befriended! He kinda of becomes a recruiter for the clubs because if he finds someone who talks about an interest, he recommends them one of the clubs. (The clubs are forever grateful because they always get an influx of people during fall semester every year.)
His first semester grades consists of:
- The Coming of Individuality (mandatory freshman course): C+ - Japanese Literature: C - Sports Media and Society: B - Principles of Sports Reporting: A - Biology 1: C-
Hinata has a breakdown about his grades because he does not want to lose his starting spot on the volleyball team. However, he improves much more due to the help of his friends like Yachi and Inuoka the next semester.
KAGEYAMA TOBIO
Sports therapy
Also gets scouted as a setter by the same university as Hinata
Since Hinata is adamant about attending all the freshman events and free events the campus offers every Friday, he eventually gets pulled into going with Hinata even though he doesn’t want to.
Thanks to Karasuno and Hinata, he has softened over the years and has learned to be more sociable with others, but he still prefers to hang out with the first years squad and is still a quiet person.
In their first dorm year, Kunimi and Kindaichi were planning to room together & they were looking for a third roommate, and Kageyama was assigned to their room
They eventually grow mutual respect towards each other
His grades are better than when he was in high school because he actually likes his classes, but he still sucks at general education subjects
He lives on coffee and 5 hour energies to get through finals. He has to cut down on the 5 hour energies because he ends up not sleeping for 3 days straight and he starts to get worried.
Kageyama eventually caves in and tries to join other clubs that do not revolve around volleyball thanks to his friends. Somehow, and the first year squad is still confused as to how, he grew to love the cooking club and he gets really excited whenever they’re trying out a new dish! (He also thinks that as an athlete knowing how to cook and take care of his body is crucial).
One day when they’re hanging out at Yamaguchi and Tsukki’s apartment, he cooks for them a recipe he learned from the club. The others are really apprehensive at first to taste it, but are genuinely so surprised that it actually tasted REALLY good and immediately start showering him compliments and yelling. Kageyama’s brain goes mush and all he can say is HINATA BOKE(Hinata: WHAT??? I was complimenting you and I wasn’t the only one, Bakageyama!!)
Besides going on his daily runs, he will also find time to go to the gym early in the mornings. He brings Hinata along with him and they just end up competing at the gym. They become regulars and befriend the front desk people and the security guards.
Because of how popular and good-looking he is, he ends up developing a fan club but doesn’t know about it until one day Tsukki points it out. It’s right after midterms in their 1st year and all five are out to eat. Tsukki’s gets annoyed because there’s just been a hoard of girls (& guys) following them in the restaurant.
Tsukki: can you tell your fanclub to leave us alone?
Kags: ...my what???
Tsukki, unimpressed but not surprised:....
Hinata points out that he has a fanclub like the Great King and Kageyama just blanches...he wants to be like Oikawa but not like this LMFAO
Kageyama’s first semester grades:
- The Coming of Individuality (mandatory freshman course): C+ - Principles of sports therapy A+ - General Japanese 1 C- - Calculus 1 B+ - Ethical Issues in Sport A-
TSUKISHIMA KEI
World History major (Honors Program)
Very orderly with his course plans (LEARNING CURVE WHO??)
The guy who plans his week ahead and actually diligently studies. Since Tsukki is BUSY all the time in college, his planner is DETAILED and NEAT. He carries it with him all the time in his backpack or pocket since it is so small and portable. If needed whenever his plans do change, he would carry small sticky notes to plan it out on the spot and make sure everything goes smoothly still. Plus he hates it when it looks messy so sticky notes are a must.
Doesn’t usually go to events on his own willpower. He usually gets dragged into events by his upperclassmen (Kuroo and Bokuto) or Yamaguchi begs to go with him because he doesn’t want to go alone.
Enjoys going to the college’s on-campus museums during his spare time. He visits seasonally since the museums change up one exhibit every few month dedicated to a certain event or artist. His favorite is the art museum because it’s quiet and calming. (Also, he’s undisturbed by the others...)
Doesn’t want to be the group manager but becomes one anyway because he just can’t watch others “ruin” his grade.
Has some university credits already from his AP classes / dual enrollment so he’s already finished with some general education requirements but still needs a few more.
He can actually graduate a semester early BUT decides against it because his apartment lease goes through the next semester and doesn’t want to be bothered with finding someone else to take his spot. (He won’t admit it but he would kinda sorta miss the 4 idiots...)
Sometimes he forgets to eat (Yamaguchi usually reminds him plus they end up going to lunch together too). Often buys starbucks sandwiches on the way to class.
He has his own starbucks cup. He always drinks the same thing, so the workers remember his face and order. Sometimes they make his order ahead of time because they know. Loves their chocolate croissants.
That bitch who drinks BLACK coffee every morning for enjoyment!!! He also drinks espresso for necessity during finals
Arrives to class early so he can get the really nice seat in the back and doesn’t want to sit next to anyone
In class discussions, Tsukki is a classic smartass. He will not hesitate to give out his opinion and often plays devil's advocate for the class.
He doesn’t join the school official volleyball team, but joins the volleyball club instead because he has to juggle between being in the honors program, being a research assistant, and playing volleyball
Doesn’t want to admit it, but still supports the boys at the official volleyball team. Goes to almost every game in disguise.
Tsukki’s first semester grades:
- The Coming of Individuality (mandatory freshman course): A- - European History and Culture A+ - History Research Seminar: A+ - Crime and Punishment in Japanese History: A+ - Empires, Nationalism, and Revolution: A+
Won’t say it, but is actually pretty upset that he got a A- in Coming of Individuality
YAMAGUCHI TADASHI
He majors in psychology and minors in business administration.
Knows where all the university gardens are and has a favorite spot when he studies sometimes if he wants some fresh air.
In continuation, he knows and goes to all the nice trails and parks around the city. He tries to go when he cans and he often brings the other first years when they all have the time. (Everyone except Tsukki enjoys it...but Tsukki grows to love it as well.)
Yamaguchi and Yachi go together to pet the therapy dogs every Friday by the library and cry from the cuteness and love they receive. They have a favorite dog that is a shiba inu named Mizu who is the ABSOLUTE sweets and gets so many belly rubs from these two.
Yamaguchi works at a boba place to cover his loans. The first-year squad comes over often to study and hang out with him (really though they tease/play around with him). He is a STAR employee, having been there most of his 4 years and is employee of the month frequently. Knows the regulars’ orders by heart and is doted on the little old lady who comes in with her dog every Sunday morning.
He LOVES all the good food. He knows all the low key, hole-in-the-wall places that DELIVER on food. His favorite food is teriyaki chicken. It’s basic but also HAS to be quality chicken and chicken.
When Yamaguchi wants to cry from the stress of doing SOOOOOO MUCH (school, job, research assistant, and psychology club), he goes to the psychology building because it’s colder and has fewer people. He discovered a spot there that no one ever goes to and cries there.
He actually found his mentor/ researcher boss who was a psychology professor and researcher who saw him one day and asked if he was okay.
He joins the psychology club and gets so involved!! He does the mentor/mentee program and because he loves helping people so much, he ends up having so many mentees and even adopting a few who get abandoned
Even though he’s already busy, he actually becomes secretary this 2nd year, VP 3rd year, and then president his last year!
Yamaguchi does NOT do coffee, but he loves tea and anything relating to tea. His favorite boba flavor is matcha green tea.
Because of this, he becomes obsessed with matcha in general and will get matcha flavored anything
Yamaguchi and Tsukki are roomies (duh). People don’t get why they live together with their opposite personalities, but they eventually see why
Yamaguchi first semester grades:
- Psychology of Personality: A+ - The Coming of Individuality (mandatory freshman course): A- - Social Psychology: A+ - Introduction to Statistics 1: B- - Introduction to Finance: B
Has always been a good student and works hard for his grades but his first semester grades suffer a little(freaks out about his B’s) because of all the stuff he has on his plate, however, he learns to handle it better and understands that a B is still okay!!
YACHI HITOKA
Graphic Design Major
Binge-buys Shein and YesStyle Clothes the first week
This QUEEN has taken every self defense lesson she could get her hands on and bought herself pepper spray as well. Even though the boys felt they were fine, she gave them pepper spray to put in their bags(practically shoved it in their bags because she wants them to be safe too)
She gets a lot of compliments for her cat keychain from others, but none of them really know that the keychain can be used for self defense and Yachi bought it because it was cute and effective.
Her campus has a building for all of the student life and activities and there’s a small bowling alley. Lemme tell you, she’s a serious bowler; like her scores are always in the triple digits. She goes every Wednesday religiously all four years (except during midterms and finals week) because it’s half priced.
OFC she joins the bowling club and competes throughout her college years. Y’all already know she’s winning the medals.
THE QUEEN OF SAVING MONEY AND COUPONING!! She will always snag the free, semesterly coupon book in the plaza when they give them out. She ends up grabbing 4 (2 for her and 2 for her roommate)
Yachi LOVES sweets so when she’s feeling stressed, she usually eats sweet things or cries and if she’s REALLY stressed she’ll do both. Her best friends are her tears, a tub of chocolate ice cream, and videos of animals(cats, dogs, pandas mostly but cats are her fav mostly) plus tiny food cooking to make her feel better.
In clubs that she joins, she often becomes the multimedia chair and everyone loves her designs and ideas!!
She interns during her 3rd year as a local business where they use her design as the new logo for the company!! Because of how well the design was, she ends up catching the eye of a major company (one she’s been looking at for a while) and they offer her a job after graduation!!
The boys are super proud of her and surprise her with a congratulations party for her success!! The boys are tearing up at how much Yachi has grown as a person(imagine Kiyoko when she presented Karasuno with the team flag and all the second and third year boys CRIED. That’s what happens basically)
Yachi’s first semester grades:
- The Coming of Individuality (mandatory freshman course): A+ - Perceptual drawing: A+ - Typography: A+ - Principles of Art History 1:B+ - Introduction to Statistics: A+
Yachi is SMART and has great grades, but her anxiety affects her when she’s dealing with big projects for her classes. She eventually gets better every semester and learns to manage her anxiety when it comes to big assignments! Bottom line, she evolves to be a BOSS.
FIRST YEARS’ SHENANIGANS (FIRST YEARS)
Coming of Individuality: freshman required course
- Hinata, Yachi, and Yamaguchi agree to be in the same class Hinata convinces Kageyama to take the course with him
- Yamaguchi asks Tsukki to take the course with him and Yachi, which he agrees, but Tsukki doesn’t know that Hinata and Kageyama are also there
Plants Drops!
- Every 3rd Thursday of the month, the gardening club has a plant drop where they give out plants for free in their campus’ plaza
- So, Yachi and Yamaguchi are the first ones to find out about it, and end up dragging the other 3 to go with them
- Tsukki thought he would hate it but he got this little cactus that he’s kept alive all four years and brings it with him when he graduates into his new apartment - Hinata tries to keep the plants alive but ends up forgetting about them so he has to opt for cacti only; though, he does end up keeping one plant alive for the rest of the semester but forgets about it when he goes home and leaves it in the dorm - Kageyama ends up keeping two plants alive, both little ferns, and names them banana and strawberry (his favorite milks) They still go every 3rd Thursday even if they have plants because it gives them an opportunity to see each other if they have been busy
Yamaguchi and Tsukki’s place
- The undisputed hangout place for the first year squad (Tsukki worries that Kags and Hinata will break something every time they come over) since it is so close to campus.  - They often come over in between classes to chill and eat their food in peace while watching Netflix or playing Mario Kart or Super Smash together.
MANDATED (Tsukki didn’t want this but the others wanted this to happen) first-year lunch hangout
- Every Friday at exactly 11:15am, the first-year squad would eat lunch together at a local food stand on their campus called Tikis to catch up for the week.  - They chose Friday because they tried all the other days and decided collectively that Fridays were the best.  - The food stand usually sells a variety of food (usually soul food) and switch it up every week but it has some of the BEST food on campus (& even the city) - Without a doubt, the first-year squad ALWAYS make sure to leave space for their mandated Tikis lunch when doing their schedules every semester. No excuses.

Note
do you have any advice for a high school senior who wants to make the most of their last year of high school? asking for a friend :)
hi darling! I think the things I remember most from my senior year (though it was only two years ago that it started) can be summarized in, “crazy busy, crazy stressful, but at times, crazy fun.” Here’s to making the most of it, and maintaining health while you do so!
This is going to be combination masterpost and advice post, because I’ve accumulated a lot on this subject and I have a loooot to say.
Also this is heavily based off of the assumption you’re pursuing higher education, but some of these things still apply/can be tweaked.
table of contents:
i. academics
ii. social life
iii. personal health
i. 𝓪𝓬𝓪𝓭𝓮𝓶𝓲𝓬𝓼
a. grades
They’re important for your future if your plan is to go to college or academy, but they’re not the whole world. (see social life and personal health)
I’m not a big fan of the “3-to-1 rule” or other such things that tell you “study for this amount of time no matter what” because it’s important for you to understand what comes naturally to you and what you need further clarification on. Some classes are going to take up less of your time than others.
The best you can do on a given day isn’t necessarily 100%. Sometimes your best that day is 90%, 80%, 60%. “try your best” isn’t “your best ever” so don’t push yourself for 100s every time for the expense of categories ii and iii.
A lot of people (at least in places like where I went to high school) who are hung up on the stress of competition and the need to be The Best™ are going to ask you for grades. It’s going to be everywhere. Assignment grades, test grades, SATs, ACTs, (if you’re not in the US, the equivalents of your state, regional, or national standardized tests), entrance exams, et cetera, et cetera. I know it’s tempting to fall into the anxiety of whether you measure up, but here’s a quick tip: even if you think you did well/above average, you can keep it private. It infuriated my classmates when I wouldn’t share, because I was comfortable with how I competed with myself and didn’t care what my peers thought of my scores.
When you’re someone as dedicated to studying as I am, you might get a lot of “oh, you got that grade because you’re you” (the underlying implication being that it’s natural or the work is easy for you, which was not the case for me) or “ha! I got higher than (name)! I measure up!” This is a lot of their own biases and insecurity talking and the best way not to be affected is not to buy into it. Again, this is based on my own experience.
I really cannot emphasize extra credit enough because some of my teachers threw it around like candy and some of them barely drizzled a little in at intervals, but either way it really saved me when it came to rounding my grades up.
It never hurts to have a grade tracker if you’re concerned, you don’t get graded by total points accumulation/have a weighted system, and/or don’t have an easy way to access your grades online throughout the year.
find your study strategy/ies for each class and stick to it/them. It won’t necessarily be the same. I’m a primarily visual learner, and it really, really helps for most things, but I still need rote memorization for subjects with a lot of vocabulary, like medicine or languages.

b. extracurriculars
These I think matter (though I’m biased) more than grades, because they’re what shape you and your experience. Most of the students at my university had grades like mine, but it’s the places I frequented and the people to whom I devoted my time that formed my sense of self. I have so many skills, anecdotes, and ideas that I’ve gained from my extracurricular work.
If you have any you’ve stuck with since early in high school and you still like, keep ‘em. Quality over quantity. Show jobs or universities you can be dedicated and disciplined, and have stamina to see projects to the end. (I was in 7 and held leadership positions in 4 and it was probably part of the reason why I spent all of senior year on three hours sleep… besides my IB classes of course.)
If you’re not pursuing college immediately or at all (or even if you are), participate in ones that pull you out of your comfort zone and teach you something new.
ii. 𝓼𝓸𝓬𝓲𝓪𝓵 𝓵𝓲𝓯𝓮
Treat this category as you would anything else in your schedule–requiring time and being a significant priority. Not always at the very top, but still demanding its own attention.
See friends outside of school, for however long or short a period, at least once every week to two weeks. This can include extracurricular time if you’re pressed.
Schedule time with your family (especially if their lives are also cluttered and hectic) do something dynamic, and also something separate that’s relaxing. One week your family time might be reading in the same room and having gentle conversation or a family dinner; the next might be going out to the movies or taking a hike together. It can be easy to feel taken for granted or to take family for granted.
By the way, this includes “chosen” family if you’re not on great terms with some/all of them. I have experience with this too.
Get. Out. Of. The. House. This plays into “personal health” too! You need a change in rhythm/routine and exposure to the outside. Especially in your winter season.
I’m one of those people who has to have things scheduled way in advance, so family/curfew/etc permitting, do something a little bit spontaneous, say with only a few hours or a couple days notice. It will make you feel more alive if you’re in a stressful slump.
Communication is really important, especially if you’re stressed. Don’t be afraid to tell people “I am sensitive/hyperreactive to X because Y is putting me on edge right now” or “this triggers X insecurity because I’m anxious about Y.” This goes doubly if you’re struggling with mental illness. Talk to someone you trust. (See “personal health.”)
Don’t give in to peer pressure if you’re spent the time you need with friends and have to excuse yourself for other responsibilities. Balance!
No is equally as important to respected as Yes, no matter what the case.
Respect boundaries but invite people to challenge their comfort zone at their space.
Don’t be broken up if a romantic relationship doesn’t last. It’s senior year. Everything’s changing. Let it.
Also, please don’t be like me and let your summer/your school year be eaten up with relationship drama. I thankfully ended a difficult relationship early (late September) so it wasn’t a huge issue, but I watched people close to me struggle with while also battling the stress of the year.
iii. 𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓼𝓸𝓷𝓪𝓵 𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓵𝓽𝓱
mentally
If you’re struggling with mental illness, be aware of your own limits and pace yourself.
Sometimes we feel dull because we need to break routine/stimulate ourselves in a new way. You should have a structure/routine, but it should be flexible enough for you to adapt to changes and listen to what your mind and body are telling you.
The path to self-love must first begin with self-acceptance. If you struggle with self-image or self-esteem issues, you can’t build positivity off a foundation of negativity. You must first level it to neutrality.
Perform check-ups with yourself. This may be in the form of meditation, a diary, therapy, etc. None of these things are a “last resort” but rather a healthy part of building good mental habits.
physically
Exercise! You don’t have to be a star athlete to bring about the benefits. Even a 15 minute jog, 30 minute walk/hike, or 10 minutes of stretching can give you benefits.
On that note! Take! Frequent! Breaks! And please, please google stretches for certain body parts like hands if you do repetitive motion like drawing or writing for a long period of time! You don’t want to push yourself!
Listen to your body and don’t ignore pain, hunger, nausea, fatigue, etc. Respond patiently and with what’s appropriate.
Don’t forget about diet. It’s easy when you’re busy to reach for the quick and nutritionally poor snacks/meals, but it’s really important to set aside time to cook/meal plan or even just throw together a quick snack tray of fruits/crackers/cheeses/etc. It doesn’t have to be instragrammable but you should have a balanced diet that factors in your specific needs, if you have any restrictions, etc.
Change yo pillow case frequently kids, it does wonders for acne.
I cannot stress enough! To! Stay! Hydrated! My goal is eventually eight glasses a day but my minimum is 4-5. I try to have one every meal, especially in college.
Bedtime is important! But more than that, wake up time is important. If you’re trying to adjust your schedule and can only keep one consistent, choose the time you wake up. Eventually your body will naturally become fatigued for the bedtime to match it. It’s how I turned my sleep schedule from 12:00 AM to 8:00 into 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM over the course of one winter break!
If you’re a morning person, you’re a morning person. If you’re a night owl, you’re a night owl. There’s research now to prove that forcing yourself into a rhythm too extreme for your tendencies can make you feel awful either way.
At the end of the day, you’ve got one goal and one goal only: to look back on this year and be proud of what you’ve achieved and how you’ve grown. You shape your future and choose what matters most in your life!
If there’s anything else you think I’ve missed or you’d like me to cover more in depth/link more posts to, please ask me! I’d be happy to clarify/continue this series! I want to make sure you’re completely satisfied.

i read your answer to the last anon’s ask abt college advice and i was wondering if you wouldn’t mind giving more tips on academics and stuff? is college really as hard as people make it out to be?
hi lovely! no of course i wouldn’t mind, i’m happy to help
to answer your last question first, it is definitely not like high school at all. i can’t speak for everyone but it does require a substantial amount of effort — not saying that it’s hard, it just might be a lot more compared to high school (again everyone’s experiences are different so college could be easier or it could be harder, just depends)
and i’m gonna put my academic advice under the cut because knowing me this will probably be long lol
1. if at all possible, skim over the powerpoint or textbook the day before the actual class day and take a few notes, then fill in any extra details or gaps in your notes that your professor goes over the next day. this helps reinforce the information you went over and you also won’t be frantically taking down notes while the professor zooms through the lecture
2. find a place to study and make sure it’s a place where you can actually focus — whether it be the library, your dorm room, an empty classroom, etc. just make sure you’re not getting easily distracted
3. plan !! out !! your !! assignments !! i cannot stress this enough. i went through high school not using a planner everyday and i was fine, but i could barely go three weeks in college without using one. it doesn’t matter what you use to plan (a calendar, a white board, sticky notes on your wall, or an actual planner) just find some kind of organization system that works for you
4. an all nighter will eventually happen at some point and that’s okay, but please do not make a habit of pulling all nighters every single night. i had a friend who did that a lot during second semester and it wasn’t pretty. it’s not healthy either. avoid it if you can, but if you must (like you got swamped with other work and didn’t have time to study) then by all means go for it, but take care of yourself
5. idk how every university works, but from my knowledge a lot of schools utilize and online system for turning in assignments (i.e. canvas) be sure to stay on top of that and constantly check for due dates. your professors may mention a due date once or twice and never mention it again (unless you’re lucky), so always stay updated with that and be sure you’re not missing any due dates
6. schedule appts with your counselor to discuss classes you should/should not take the next semester. plan it out with them so you know what to expect
7. this was mentioned before on my blog by one of my mutuals, but i’m gonna include it again — befriend at least one person in each of your classes so that way you have someone to study with. you guys don’t have to be bffs, but it’s nice to have someone to study with, especially during exam season. even if you’re the type to prefer studying alone, it there’s ever a section you don’t understand you could always call or text that person and see if they can help explain it to you
8. okay my last piece of advice (idk if this counts as academic) but there’s a website called “rate my professor” and it has saved my life. you basically look up your professor’s name and can see their ratings and reviews left by former students. obviously each student has a different experience with their professor, but personally it’s helped me out a bunch and i was lucky enough to get instructors with high ratings and good reviews — but take the ratings/reviews with a grain of salt

Dancing With A Stranger
This is my first Peter Parker x Reader piece. I’d really love your feedback! Should I write a part two? Also the reader and Peter are in University.
Tumblr media
Y/N sighed, leaning herself back against the edge of the doorframe, a plastic red cup in hand, her eyes gazing out along the picturesque back garden. The sky was a stunning pink and orange colour, the colours mixing into one as the sun lowered in the sky.
The music was loud, the vibrations pulsing through her body and vibrating her chest. She was surrounded by an energetic group of young people, most of them enjoying themselves, some a little too much.
Y/N scoffed and rolled her eyes, watching from the corner of her eye as Dylan, a stuck up jock from the football team held a girl in his arms and pushed her up against the kitchen table, practically ready to bounce on her as his lips captured hers.
Y/N was only here at this party because her best friend Rachel begged her to go.
“Oh please Y/N! I’m begging you! Carter is going to be there and he said he’d love to see me there and then winked at me! I can’t go on my own!”
“You won’t be on your own because you’ll ditch me and hang out with Carter for most of the night! I’m really not feeling up for it...I’ve got exams coming up, I need to finish this huge assignment for my Media module..” You sighed, running a stressed hand through your hair. “You won’t even miss me..”
“Oh Come on Y/N! When you’re 90 years old, what are you going to remember? That media assignment or that fantastic party you enjoyed yourself at?” Rachel huffed, pushing her hands on her hips, tilting her head at you with a raised eyebrow.
You narrowed your eyes at her, tucking your lip underneath your teeth. “Fine! But I’m only staying until you hook up with Carter and then I’m gone..”
“Good! Because you need to get your mind off of that stupid Peter Parker guy..”
To be quite honest, Y/N really didn’t want to be here. Party’s weren’t her scene and now that Rachel had hooked up with Carter, she really should be going, but the alcohol was really starting to ease out the pain that she was feeling on the inside.
Unknown to everyone here, this was a really tough week for Y/N. Apart from the stress of college exams and assignments, Y/N’s heart was shattered.
Peter Parker had made a total mess of Y/N L/N.
Peter Parker was the Captain of the football team in RiverValley University. Not only was he an exceptional star football player but he was also incredibly handsome. His eyes were brown chocolate pools, his chestnut brown hair was always quiffed back and he was also extremely toned and always kept himself fit by training with the football team 3-4 times a week and even going to the gym at the same time.
Peter was also known to be a real flirt. He was a real ladies man. He knew exactly what to say to have the girls falling at his feet. Not that he needed to say anything, since all the girls were already swooning at the sight of him.
Y/N was only aware of Peter Parker through going to the football games for her journalism course; but of course she heard what girls said about him.
“He’s honestly the best snog I’ve ever had.”
“I can’t believe Peter Parker never called me back! The cheeky bastard was gone by the time I woke up!”
“Did you hear he slept with Lucinda’s best friend literally the night they broke up?”
“He’s such a dick, all he does is get in your pants and then breaks your heart!”
She couldn’t deny it though, Peter Parker was fit. There was something very intriguing about him, she had to admit..maybe it was his dark chocolate brown eyes..or maybe his biceps that he would alway flex throughout the game..or maybe it was the fact that he was the star team player on the football team that really..there was just something about Peter Parker that she just liked..she couldn’t help herself. He was charming, he was sweet, and from what she heard through some of guys in the library, he was also quite intelligent.
He was the guy girls wanted to sleep with and he was the guy that all guys on campus wanted to be.
Taking a seat on the bleachers Y/N slipped out her camera along with her colorful spotted notebook. The buzz among the crowd was pretty unreal. Students had beers in one hand, a bag of chips in the other, a lot of the guys had red painted stripes across their cheeks, while some guys had even gone as far as to paint the university logo across their chests in support of the soccer team.
Y/N had to admit, she was feeling nervous herself This was a big game, the final of the season.
Glancing down at her notebook she started to jot down notes about the atmosphere, the crowd, which key players would be taking part in the game, suddenly the sunlight was blocked by a tall figure, knitting her eyebrows together in confusion, she glanced up at the brown eyed boy, a confident smirk plastered across his face.
“Hey, you’re Y/N L/N, right?” He smirked, taking a seat beside her. Y/N turned to face him, raising an eyebrow.
“Why do you ask?” She hummed, her eyes drifting up and down at his appearance.
“Well aren’t you a pretty sight for sore eyes..” he grinned, his biceps flexing as he combed a hand through his hair, his eyes drifting up and down her appearance.
Y/N’s long hair/color drifting down her shoulders into loose ringlet curls, her face glowing and being illuminated from the setting sun. Peter was truly in awe at the beauty in from him.
Y/N scoffed slightly, folding her arms across her chest. “What a line.” She laughed, her smile illuminating her features.
“Shouldn’t you be getting ready with the others?” She nodded down the field, watching the other football players doing jumping squats, jogging on the spot and stretching out their muscles for the big game.
“Don’t worry about me sweetheart..I’ll be fine..As a matter of fact, you write for the university paper, right?” Peter smiled, pointing down at the last issues university paper on her lap. “Put this in your notebook, I’m going to win the game and I’ll score the winning goal just for you..and when I do..you’ll let me take you out..”
Y/N could feel the glare of envious girls starring into the back of her head. She could feel her cheeks starting to heat up ever so slightly.
“Come on..if you say no I’ll lose the game..you don’t want that do you?” He sighed, widening his eyes to look like puppy dog eyes as his fingers grazed her cheek bone before gently pushing back Y/N’s hair behind your ear.
“Where’s all of this coming from Parker? You don’t even know me..” Y/N laughed, feeling herself melt underneath his warm touch.
“I always see you at my games..I see you around campus..and I’ve read your articles in the paper..You just really..You just really intrigue me L/N..I’ve heard some pretty cool things about you..” Peter hummed, his thumb dragging down across Y/N’s cheekbone, drawing small circles across her skin.
Y/N could hear the envious whispers of the girls surrounding her, wishing they were the ones being swooned over.
“Oh really? Like what?” She laughed, her curiosity getting the better of her.
“Well for one I know you write for the university paper..you write exceptional articles about yours truly..” he grinned confidently as he motioned to himself, “I’ve heard that you’re ambitious ..passionate...” He spoke, his tone of voice soft and low, his fingers grazing from her cheek bone, down to her shoulder, his fingers slowly drawing down her arm and to her hand, grabbing hold of it.
“Hmm..It doesn’t sound like you’ve heard too much about me...Mhmm..I don’t know Parker..I’ve heard things about you too..” Y/N whispered, her eyes glazing over Peters features.
Peter chuckled deeply, a playful grin on his face. “Enlighten me.“
“Well..I’ve heard that you’re an insensitive jerk who just likes to sleep with anything that breathes..” Y/N answered, a questioning smile on her lips.
Peter chuckled, his chest vibrating as he did so, a mischievous look painted across his features.
“But you see..” Peter smirked, cupping Y/N’s chin between his thumb and index finger. “You can’t say those things are true because like you said..I barely know you and you barely know me..so why don’t you just say yes and we can get to know each other?”
Y/N nervously tucked her lip underneath her teeth, she could feel her heart accelerating from the charming words dripping from Peters tongue.
What harm could it do? Y/N is a big girl, she can look after yourself.
“Only if you win the game Parker.” Y/N smiled, her cheeks glowing pink as Peter took hold of both her hands, pressing his lips against the back of them.
From that moment onwards, Y/N was hooked. She discovered that Peter wasn’t that much of an ‘insensitive jerk’ that the girls on campus said he was.
Peter was Peter. He had this cool, confident character that he would play out to be on campus, but behind closed doors, Peter was different.
He was Y/N’s Peter. He was caring, passionate, gentle, loving. When Peter was around Y/N, he was his true self.
From that night of the football match, Peter and Y/N were hooked on one other. They would meet after class, they’d meet during lunch breaks, Y/N would meet Peter after practice. Y/N couldn’t believe that she used to listen to those petty rumors. Peter was amazing. In fact, he was perfect.
Lately though, their relationship started to show some cracks. Peter started showing up late to dates to eventually not showing up at all. Sometimes he seemed to be even more interested in his phone than her. Thing always seemed to come up and in between the pair that their relationship was now like what the pair were in the beginning; strangers.
“I can’t do this anymore Pete..you’re barely here anymore, you never answer my calls or texts..when we are out you just disappear and leave me on my own..things have been different between us..I think we need a break from whatever this is that we have..” Y/N cried, her voice strained, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“No..No Y/N please..” Peter frowned, his eyes beginning to water as his face shaded white with shock.
“I’m sorry..” Y/N sobbed, her heart shattering into pieces as she ran out of Peters dorm room, running out of the building and back to her own dorm room.
Leaving behind her broken heart in the hands of a broken hearted Peter Parker.
And that’s how Y/N ended up here at this party, a red cup in hand filled with a mixture of different kinds of alcohol, her eyes brimming with the tears at the thought of Peter Parker.
Rachel hooked up with Carter about forty five minutes ago but Y/N just couldn’t seem to leave. She needed this. She didn’t know just how badly she needed this party to loosen her up, to take her mind off of everyone and everything, especially him.
Suddenly Y/N was drawn from her train of thought when a pair of cool finger tips grazed over her skin, jolting her back to reality.
Y/N turned to face the notorious Flash, her eyes rolling at the sight of him.
Flash was another key player on the football team. Although he was an excellent player, he was a real asshole. Y/N seen him around campus a lot of the time, a different girl always by his side every day and a new girl after every practice at the end of the day. Y/N also witnessed him being ignorant and rude to a lot of the nice guys here on campus, beating them up for money, beating them up for even just glancing at him. Y/N wasn’t really his biggest fan.
“What are you doing on your own pretty girl?” Flash smirked, his hand landing on Y/N’s waist.
“Getting another drink.” Y/N replied curtly, a tight smile on her face as she released herself from his grip, walking over to the drinks table.
“Come on Y/N, don’t be like that. Come dance with me..” Flash hummed, pulling hold of Y/N’s hand and dragging her into the makeshift dance floor.
“No Flash, I really don’t want to..” Y/N sighed, pulling back from Flash’s grip and tipsily falling back into another body that caught her before she fell to the floor.
“Oh gosh...I’m really so sorry..” Y/N gasped, her body turning to face the person she fell back into.
Y/N felt the world stand still and stop. She could feel her breath caught in her throat and her heart rate increasing.
“Peter..”

My Journey as a Maid of Honor
Since summer is approaching us, do you know what that means? Wedding Season. A whole a lot of spending your money on clothes that you will probably never wear again, OH and dealing with bridezillas.
Last year of November, my best friend surprised me and some of her other friends by popping the BIG QUESTION, “Will you be my Maid of Honor.” Obviously, I was going to say yes without realizing the amount of annoyance I was about to be faced with. With joy I accepted her box full of treats she gave as a present to me. In the box were pictures from our childhood, a PJ set, a wine bottle, a hand mirror, and a heart filled personalized card. In the card she wrote why she chose me to me the maid of honor, and the date of the wedding which was only revealed to me. Obviously, it was on the same weekend of my birthday. But oh well, it’s just a birthday, I guess…
Two weeks later, my other best friend announced that she would have her wedding 3 weeks before my other best friend (end of June), and my cousin announced that she would have her wedding the same weekend as well.
Tip: Breath and create a calendar with all the main events
So just in case you feel lost, let me draw this out for you. I am a Maid of Honor for a wedding taking place on July 20thand a bridesmaid for a wedding taking place on June 30thand on the same weekend my cousin is getting married.
Now the problem is not the actual weddings, is it the 10 events which happen leading up to the wedding. As well as the thousands of dollars that are spent on clothing, hair and makeup. Being Indian means, we have a lot of traditions and celebrations, which don’t get me wrong, are tons of fun. It involves a whole a lot of color, beautiful outfits, outrageous décor, a lot of dancing and BOOZE. The image below is an example of how décor typically looks like at an Indian wedding ceremony.
Tumblr media
Tip: Always create a budget break-down for yourself in terms of how much you will end up spending for each event. This includes the cost of your outfit, makeup, bachelorette/bachelor party, gift(s) to the brides, etc.
As I am processing this, I just realized that I still have one more semester of school left, and this is where I start PANICKING. How am I going to handle school, whilst helping plan three important weddings? Plus, all these food festivals which I do not want to miss out on. Like how can anyone miss out on poutine festival or taco fest?
Anyways, in December my best friend approached me to ask me if I can plan the bachelorette and bridal shower for her. As a Maid of Honor, I had to say yes. Listen, I love my best friend and I would do anything for her, but this is a busy time for me since I am trying to manage school and work on all these wedding shenanigans.
To make things more complicated, she decided to invite her fiancé and his friends to the bachelorette party. So essentially it would be both a bachelorette and a bachelor party. For anyone who has ever experienced this, they would know how complicated things can get when you add a bunch of guys to the mix.
So, the first thing I did was reach out to my best friend’s sister, Bianca, and created a WhatsApp group with all the bridesmaids, and to inform them that the destination we have chosen is Vegas. Now come the outpouring suggestions and recommendations of where we should stay, and how much our budget should be blah blah.
So, complication #5393458 is that everyone in the group are of different age and have different things going on in their lives. Some were students, some are businesswomen, and some are married and have kids. So, their interests and budgets are entirely different from one another.
Some wanted to spend their money on a luxurious hotel, and some would rather spend their money at pool parties and clubs. Long story short, it took me about 3 months to decide on what hotel we should stay at. Once we finalized the hotel, I decided to get touch with the groom and his best man(s) who were planning the bachelor party and let’s just say they were not happy with the hotel we decided to stay at. At this point I told them I don’t really give a s*** about their opinion and we are going ahead with that hotel.
Tip: Create an excel sheet with a budget breakdown so people can see where their money will be going. For people who are on a tight budget, seeing a number visually will ease the process. Below is an example of how this can look like.
Tumblr media
The next headache was coming up with an itinerary. This trip is supposed to be 3 nights and 4 days long (Friday- Monday). For Friday, the bride and groom decided that both the guys and girls should spend it together, GREAT! (rolling my eyes). Now this is where things get really COMPLICATED. I had booked all of the girls for an event where Calvin Harris was performing, and of course the best man(s) had to oppose to it, because the cost of them getting a booth there was “too expensive” (FYI: only $100 difference shared amongst 28 people). So anyways, they decided we should go to a “cheaper” event with a less interesting artist. Ok so they literally ruined our wonderful plan, but we were okay with that.
For that same day we had decided that we will get a private dining room for all the girls and guys as a surprise for both the groom and bride. At this point I had already booked a private chef, and here come along the groom’s men opposing to the idea once again. They wanted to do a $100 USD buffet. Why would anyone spend that much on a buffet? Once again, I agreed to it.
Now that the bachelorette party was somewhat coming together, it was time to plan the bridal shower. Let me tell you, this was not fun at all. The bride told us she wanted us to plan an Aladdin themed bridal shower, and once again she wanted us to surprise her so that meant we had to come up with the guest list, find a venue and a caterer, etc.
As I started planning this, I decided to use a technique I learnt when doing group work in the Master of Marketing program, and that is to DELEGATE! Instead of taking on all the responsibilities and trying to plan every single detail, I decided to come up with a list of duties and assign a task to all the bridesmaids.  I simply created a google doc and listed all the responsibilities and put a bunch of names down and shared it with everyone.
Tip: Create a Google Doc and share it with the people who will be participating in the planning process, like the one below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The planning led all the way to April, which also meant exam time. Since there was only two weeks left till Vegas, this meant CRUNCH time.
Amidst all this, I had to deal with coordinating bridesmaid’s outfits. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TRYING TO GET 13 BRIDESMAIDS to send their correct measurements?! Anyways, once I got the measurements, I decided to order the outfits.
Tip: Ladies and Gents, whenever you are placing a bulk order for clothes, always make sure you get a sample outfit from the designer
The outfits were being made in India. It is a beautiful white skirt and crop top with gold embroidery. The cost of each outfit is $300 CAD, and each bridesmaid has to pay out of her pocket which made it more nerve wracking in terms of getting these outfits down to perfection.
Three weeks later, we received a box with all these outfits, and what happens? NONE OF THEM FIT. I called the designer and yelled at him for sending me the wrong sizes and since these are custom made, none of them are refundable nor returnable. I told the bridesmaids to re-measure themselves so I can find a seamstress to fix all of them, and turns out, they all measured themselves wrong.
Tip: Always find someone professional to get you measured
So, since it was their fault, I told them that it was their responsibility to get their own outfits fixed. Remember guys, always delegate.
Now its exam time, and I am both stressed and excited for Vegas (not really excited for my exams haha). After I finished my exams, it was crunch time for the trip, so this meant buying the decorations for our hotel and custom making our t-shirts and making any last-minute reservations. This also meant hitting the gym every single day in the hopes I would have a 6-pac for my trip.
Amidst all this chaos, I totally forgot to order outfits for my trip. So, I quickly went onto Fashion Nova, which is a famous online store for both men and women. I quickly placed an order in hopes I would get my order in time and hopefully all the outfits would fit. Fast forward a week later (I now only have 6 days left till my trip) I receive my order from Fashion Nova, AND EVERYTHING IS TOO SMALL on me. When I mean I started crying, I mean it! I called my best friend and started crying because nothing fit me and I had spent so much money on these outfits and none of it was refundable, oh and they also sent me 3 of the wrong outfits.
So, at this point my only option was to go to the mall and try to find 3 outfits for a night out, 2 for a pool party and at least 2 for a fancy dinner and lunch. So, I went to at least 3 malls, and FOUND NOTHING!
Did I mention how unnecessarily expensive stores are? I wasn’t going to spend $100 on just one dress. At this point I made a decision to go onto another online store called Pretty Little Thing. I decided to order 4 dresses, confident that they will all fit since I ordered from them before. Since I needed it expediated, I had to pay $20 USD for express shipping. 2 days later, I get my package, and as I’m furiously opening it, I try on my first out and guess what? The dresses are too big. At this point I was not even mad; I was just laughing at myself for even trying.
Tip: Never order dresses from any online shops until reading reviews on both Instagram and on Google. Try to find the exact outfit on the company’s Instagram page and see the reviews for that exact outfit. See what people say about the sizing and quality.
I come downstairs, and my mom asks me “how are the dresses?” I told her that I am just going to end up wearing my old dresses because this whole online ordering business is not working out for me. She took a look at the dresses and said that she can take me to a seamstress and just get them fixed. How genius is my mother… The same day I decide to visit my seamstress and she quotes me $50 just to get them fixed, without hesitation I gave it to her and told her I will pick them up the next day. Anyways, so that whole situation worked out somehow. I went to Post Canada to return all my Fashion Nova dresses. As we know I was already frustrated with their return policy, and then I was told I would have to pay $30 in return shipping, WHEN IT WAS NOT EVEN MY FAULT. I emailed Fashion Nova, and let’s just say I sent a very threatening message to them on both Facebook and email.
Tip: Always send customer service an email about your complaint/ experience. If you do not like their response via email, try contacting them on social media. These companies care about their reputation and the last thing they want is a bad review on their page.
Finally came the day to leave for VEGAS! Our flight departed at 9 p.m. from Toronto, so we decided to go to the airport to sit at the Air Canada Lounge to eat and drink. We then decided to stop by the duty free to pick up some alcohol since everyone who has been to Vegas knows how expensive food and alcohol can be there.
Tip: Never buy alcohol from Vegas, always get it from the airport when departing.
We all finally arrive and set-up our suite with decorations and gifts for all the bridesmaids. And let’s just say after that, the trip was a blur.
After recovering from the trip, now it was time to finalise everything for the bridal shower. This was a breeze since we hired people to decorate the venue and make all the deserts. Below is a picture of the beautiful Aladdin cake.
Today is May 26th, 2019, and within the next 3 weeks it is both my cousins and my other best friend’s bridal showers and bachelorette parties. (WISH ME LUCK)!
This story will be continued, if I make it out alive after this summer….

User Research: Learning Support
Tumblr media
As of this week, the 1st of October, I have started out on a journey to test the viability of my major project idea: Educational Templates.
Today I met with Gosia, who is a Learning Support Worker. She very kindly agreed to give up 2 hours of her time to talk all things education with me.
Things we discussed:
Lockdown
During lockdown Gosia’s institution used Exemplar Education to upload learning resources, which would be comprised of 3 parts:
a tutorial
practice exercises
an exam
The exam would have a threshold which the teacher could move up and down. The student would have to pass this to get to the next lesson, where they would repeat this process.
Below is a screenshot of Exemplar Education which I was able to find online.
Tumblr media

The Problem With Distance Teaching: Accountability
Gosia told me there was very little engagement from students who wouldn’t access the portal due to a lack of accountability from teachers and parents.
She told me she had written down login information for students in their homework diaries, however students still claimed they couldn’t log in. There could genuinely have been issues with students’ credentials as reported, however it’s very likely that students lost and binned their homework diaries which became redundant when not attending school, losing their login details.
Moreover, as trending on social media, one of the biggest issues of lockdown was being ripped out from our social circles which caused many adults across the world to lose sight of their goals and dreams, despite having to pay rent. As adults, we receive the payoff of our efforts once a month, giving us the motivation to keep pushing with cognitively straining tasks. Earning money opens up options; granola from the higher shelf, a downpayment on a home which we can make our own. Earning money is dreaming.
We must therefore ask ourselves, how to motivate for example, a 2nd year student. They will not be incentivised with money (options) for another 5 - 8 years depending on whether they decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Further complications arise from a deeply rooted compulsion for instant pleasure planted in us by the internet and an economy of instant services and cheaply made goods.
When we want to see a friend we no longer take a 20 minute bus: we retrieve our phone from our pocket in less than 1 second.
Clothes are a mouse click away with 52 micro seasons instead of 4.
It is no surprise that students don’t have the mental stamina to motivate themselves to get up and work.
Tumblr media
The Problem With Distance Teaching: Devices
Another issues Gosia mentioned, was access to the internet.
96% of people in the UK have access to the internet. In a school of 700, 28 people are unable to do their work.
But it’s not that simple. To access Learning Management Systems such as Exemplar Education, you will need a computer. In 2018, 88% of UK households owned a computer. That means in a school of 700, 84 children are physically unable to do their work.
However, 99% of 16-24 year olds own a smartphone.
If we want to give kids the ability to do their homework, we need to ensure they can access it through their mobile device.
Tumblr media
The Problem With Distance Teaching: Contact
Relating back to accountability, the school and it’s teachers must remain in contact with the parent body.
Gosia mentioned the only way her school was contacting parents to notify them about work was through auto generated emails. Between 70-80% of people aged 25-64 in the UK check their emails.
Between us: who checks automated emails?
Furthermore, Gosia told me that most of the emails sent out were not related to the work students have been doing. She, herself, would leave the majority of emails from her kids’ school unread.
It is as simple as linking up emails with a tool like IFTTT to send out customised emails to all parents per form group, per subject. For example:
Dear Parent of <student name>,
Today <student name> was assigned <tasks>
Please ensure these were completed.
All the best, <name of teacher>, teacher of <name of subject>
Tumblr media
The Life of a Learning Support Worker
Gosia teaches kids with learning difficulties. This can range from dyslexia, selective mutism to hearing problems and beyond. She runs 1-to-1 sessions as well as facilitating space for other teachers and helpers to run their own.
Tools
Having spent 5 years at the school where Gosia now teaches, I can ascertain that all subjects are taught by a teacher preaching alongside a slide deck, followed by practical tasks and exercises: namely, writing things in a notebook.
By process of elimination, students who are deemed to have learning difficulties are those for whom this teaching style doesn’t work. For example, while teachers are forced to wear masks, deaf students can’t lip read.
I asked Gosia what techniques she uses to connect with her students.
“I mostly try to create links and associations between things my students already know, and those they don’t. For example, I have a dyslexic student with illiterate parents. He has trouble understanding letters and guesses words when he sees them in sentences. To teach him the letter B, I would draw it out and tell him it has a big belly so that he remembers the sound.
He learns by talking and doing, not reading - so I try to get him talking as much as possible.
He is also a kinaesthetic learner. Sometimes I will give him words, and ask him to draw their outlines so that he can guess them by the general shape and not letter by letter.”
Gosia worried that adding more digital learning to the curriculum discourages students from doing their own thinking. She explained that Googling for synonyms removes the hard but vital work of getting up, getting a dictionary, going through the alphabet to get to the desired word and then reading about the word and other words by proxy. She believes these processes are key developmental tools.
Tumblr media
Concentration
I asked Gosia what traits she notices in her students which may cause them to underperform. She mentioned that many students find it very hard to concentrate- they rush to get answer without doing the working out, per se. This causes them to miss out on learning the methods of getting from A to B.
Interestingly, she linked this to bad behaviour on the playground - rushing into doing things, without prior consideration.
She mentioned many of her students come in under slept and the lesson becomes a fight to keep them awake.
When I asked her what she does to combat concentration problems, she told me she puts on quiet piano music to get all students in the room on the same wavelength. She added she puts heavy emphasis on varying the worksheets and learning styles she uses to make sure that the students and herself are excited by the content. I strongly agree with this approach - it reminds me of A/B testing in the tech industry, whereby different ways of fulfilling the same tasks are tested with users until the best one is found.
My learning experience is best when the teacher clearly has love and passion for the subject. -Gosia’s Daughter
Gosia added that human connection and humor are key. Sometimes she reads to her students and they all have a laugh when she mispronounces something which helps them remember the word.
I found it very moving in the interview when Gosia explained that many students disassociate with learning when their self esteem plummets after getting their answers wrong.
She gave an example of a girl who was very clever but would score 20% on her exams because she was dyslexic. Gosia fights very hard to encourage her students every day and explain to them that they are not stupid - however this seems to be a very deeply engrained feeling.
Resources
Following on from the conversation about switching up teaching resources, I asked Gosia where she finds those which she uses.
She told me a recent favourite is the Facebook Group NI Teachers Collaborate.
She was clearly very passionate about the group, mentioning her favourite features are that resources are easily accessible at a subdomain of the page where they are organised under different folders by a moderator. She felt very strong that resources had to be approved and moderated.
Gosia repeatedly used the word ‘organised’ which led to believe that organisation is essential in her line of work.
I asked if she would be willing to spend money on resources and she enthusiastically agreed as well as saying that she has spent money in the past. She mentioned she would much rather prefer a subscription model where new content is continually uploaded as she worried that set content may not suit her needs and quickly become stale.
Gosia told me she liked taking notes - when I floated the idea of a book, once again she was very enthusiastic and added that after every chapter she would like some blank pages for taking notes. I decided that if she likes a lot of new content, it would be best to try a model such as YouTube videos with links to resources and a PDF explanation so that she can organise and print these into her own book. This way she can learn through a video lesson now, and reference her notes later on, in the classroom for example.
She mentioned she doesn’t like using a computer so I imagine flicking through tabs of resources would cause a lot of cognitive strain. Though I haven’t tested, I would guess most teachers prefer offline resources so I will need to focus heavily on creating a seamlessly blended approach.

5 Things I Wish I Did Throughout College
You’re sitting down with a seasoned veteran—a fifth-year senior—to reminisce on the things I wish I would have done in the four years I’ve been a college student.
For you incoming freshmen, or already struggling college students, I’m here to help.
I’m writing this with hope that you won’t make the same mistakes I did.
I wish I went to class
I’ll be pretty straightforward, I was an awful student. Attending my classes was a low priority on my list, when in reality it should have been at the top of my priority list considering how expensive college is.
There are three types of professors: Mr. Mandatory Attendance, Mrs. Participation, and Ms. I Don’t Care If You Show Up To Class, If You Fail It’s Your Fault.
I’ll break these professors down for you.
Mr. Mandatory Attendance literally requires you to be in class, usually giving you three to four free days. The way it typically goes is for every day you miss after that third or fourth day, you get points knocked off your total grade.
I’ve had plenty of classes that required my attendance and I made the same mistake every. single. time. There would be days where I just couldn’t bear to leave the comfort of my warm bed and decided to use one of my free days to cuddle with my dog and Netflix, or maybe I didn’t agree with the weather.
Before I knew it, I quickly used up all the free days I had. Normally, this would happen mid-October.
October = sick season.
Here’s my advice for you: Use those days sparingly because you never know when you’ll actually need them for good reasons. Sometimes, professors will give you extra credit if you have free days left!
Mrs. participation is a professor who centers classroom attendance based on if you participated in class. For example, five minute group work that you turn in at the end of class or the classic raise-your-hand-and-pray-you’re-right-so-you-don’t-look-like-an-idiot so your professor marks you down for the day.
This is the kind of class that will get you towards the end of the semester and leave you in panic-mode. Consistently skipping participation-based classes will destroy your GPA and you never expect it to until it’s too late. Don’t mess with Mrs. Participation. She’ll ruin you.
Ms. I Don’t Care If You Show Up To Class, If You Fail It’s Your Fault is the type of professor who expects you to be responsible enough to show up on your own. She expects you to sit down at every class, listen, and then leave. It’s a textbook kind of class that students (like me) make the mistake of thinking she totally doesn’t care if I come so this class will be cake. Then I only showed up once a week, had no idea what was going on, and failed the exam.
Long story short, just go to class. Even if your attention isn’t fully on the professor and you’re working on something else (or scrolling through Pinterest on your laptop) you’re still retaining a bit of information, so that counts for something.
2. I wish I managed my time better
This is what our high school teachers constantly warned us about.
Two distinct differences between high school and college are (1) you’re not forced to go to school for eight hours straight and (2) professors don’t give you class time to work on papers or homework (unless they’re super nice, and that is rare).
You’re expected to efficiently manage your time outside of class between four-six classes. Often you’ll have one paper due the same day you have two other exams, as well as homework due in another class.
Tips:
Buy a planner and actually use it
Set reminders on your phone
Schedule at least two days off if you have a job and be as productive as possible
You have to figure out when you can study for those exams (don’t wait the night before, no amount of caffeine will save you), how far ahead you’ll have to start writing that paper, and when you’ll have time to squeeze in finishing that homework.
Sometimes in situations like that, it’s necessary to prioritize which assignments/exams are most important. In some classes, the professors will drop your lowest exam grade; however, you should only take advantage of this if you know you have too much on your plate and there’s no possible way you can get a decent grade.
There are plenty of tools that can help you manage your time, it’s just a matter of finding which one works best for you.
The biggest struggle will be trying to manage your personal time between time set aside for studying and homework.
Always make being a student your first priority, after all, you’re investing in it.
It’s also important to take care of yourself and still set time aside to do the things that make you happy.
3. I wish I studied more
When I was a high school student, I never studied and I still got away with decent grades.
College isn’t that easy. There are classes that only require minimum effort and then there are tedious classes that require extra work and maximum focus.
It’s easy to get into the habit of procrastinating and allowing yourself to wait until the night before to start studying for an exam.
Today, we have too many tools that can help us study to even consider putting it off, because at this point studying is easy. It’s just a matter of making yourself do it.
Tips:
Using pen and paper to write things down boosts your memory retention. Even if you use a laptop during class, just go back over the notes and write them down!
If your professor gives you a study guide, fill it out as the professor lectures. This saves a lot of time from trying to look for the answers outside of class when the professor is going over it in class.
Quizlet. Quizlet. Quizlet. Not only can you make your own flashcards, you can search for the class and see if someone has already made one.
The library is your friend!
If you’re feeling unmotivated to study, start a system where you reward yourself for every hour of studying you get done (I use Netflix and food).
CHEGG! Utilize this tool and find past exams. You could even split the account and subscription with friends to make it cheaper.
4. I wish I planned accordingly to my personal interests as a student
When you first meet with your academic advisor, their main concern isn’t exactly what’s best for you. They’re just trying to get you and a ton of other students enrolled in classes.
As a freshman, I just believed that waking up for 8 a.m. classes was a part of college I would have to deal with. I’ve always been a night owl so obviously, 8 a.m. classes and I don’t get along.
All I needed to tell my advisor was “I won’t be as successful taking a class load with early start times” and talk to them about scheduling your classes later in the day.
It’s important to plan your college career accordingly to how you work best. If you’re not a morning person and have trouble getting yourself out of bed, don’t take an early morning class.
Another thing to plan for when scheduling your classes is when you can eat. If you plan on starting your day early and ending it mid-afternoon, don’t forget to leave a time slot for lunch. If you’re starting your classes after lunch, make sure you have time for dinner.
A tool I’ve habitually leaned on while scheduling my classes is Rate My Professor. This site is a life-saver in terms of preventing you from ending up in a class with a villainous professor; you just input the professor’s name, look for the class in the ratings, and viola! You can decide if you want to take that professor.
I almost forgot! There’s immense pressure to graduate in 4 years, but here’s the thing: only 19% of students graduate with their bachelors in 4 years. I’m not saying become a college student for life, but just take your time. Determine what amount of credit hours works best for you and just go with it!
Additionally, it’s okay to be unsure about your major. You’re young, it’s difficult to imagine yourself in a career field that you’ll be working in until retirement. Take it from someone who has changed their major four times, it’s not the end of the world—if you believe you’ll be happier in the long run, I encourage you to go with your gut!
Side note: keep in mind that if you do have trouble waking up in the mornings, you definitely need to find a permanent solution because hello, full-time job after graduation.
5. I wish I had chosen better friends
When I look back on my four years of college, the one thing I would change first is who I surrounded myself with.
Between the actual school work, the hits on your mental health, and the oh-so familiar feeling of overwhelming stress, you need people you know you can count on.
The last thing you need is to deal with drama that reminds you of high school, or even worse, someone who drags you down with negativity.
Choose your friends wisely.
How do you know if they’re good for you?
They encourage you.
A good friend will push you to study, to take personal time to decompress, and cheer you on.
They push you out of your comfort zone
College is a time where growth is inevitable. There’s only so much growing you can do as a person when you restrict yourself to small circle of comfort, and a good friend will push you to do things to better yourself.
If they’re pushing you to do things that you’re reluctant of trying - keep them around.
They check on you
Sometimes we go MIA and lock ourselves away in our rooms, attempting to hide from the world and our problems. A good friend would notice that you’ve become a little hermit and drag you out of bed.
There’s a ton of other ways that could be check-on worthy and the point is they’ll always notice and be by your side.
Personally, those are three things I believe are the most important to keep a friend around.
Good, reliable friends will make your college experience go so much smoother. It’s no coincidence that once I found two of my best friends who push me, encourage me, and keep an eye out on me, I began pursuing things I never would have, my GPA shot up, and I truly became happy.
College is all about self-control; controlling that sneaky laziness, the skip days, the “I’ll go out this weekend and just pull an all-nighter Sunday night” mentality, and of course, the junk food.
Do yourself a favor and hit the gym every once in a while. It’s good for you.
Welcome to college, freshies.
