Unpopular writing opinion:
We need more absolutely vile, unlikeable villains. There’s a place for villains you can "babygirl" but I’m bored of it. Give me the most nasty disgusting villains that will make me cringe into the earth you cowards.
There's this entire thing that's cropped up around 'likeable' or 'relatable' villains where, instead of being a cautionary tale about how we can all end up there or how people who seem lovely can actually be vile, it's become "uwu babygirl isn't evil after all"
And like there's a place for it! I like my fair share of babygirl villains! Hell I was there all the way back when Thor was released and Loki kicked off the popularisation of this trend!
I'm just,,, bored of it now. Especially when I'm seeing people do the whole babygirlification process on real-ass human beings???? It's gone too far.
Give me vile.
Give me the eugenicist who wants to eradicate 'imperfections' because he thinks he's an agent of God
Give me an abusive horrible parent but don't tell me they're trying just show me from their kid's eyes the catharsis of getting them the fuck out of their life
Give me the fuckin westboro baptist church for elves or someshit i don't care, just give me something I can hate with my entire being so that I can feel the rush of vindication when they inevitably get defeated.
There's too many irredeemable, vile people in real life. Especially as a trans person right now, it's easy to fall into despair when I see how untouchable those people seem to be, and how many people will defend them based on their motivations or some other "relatable" bullshit.
Give me a story that shows they're not as untouchable as they seem. Give me a story that shows there's always hope for the downtrodden; that the vile, horrible people trying to destroy us are just that, and they don't deserve a single tear. Stop trying to humanise our abusers, because we know they're humans but they don't care that we are too.
Just once, give me someone I can sink my teeth into and tear apart without the slightest touch of empathy. Give me what I can't have in real life.

soulmates are cool and such, but please, consider: unsoulmates.
Unsoulmates: A pairing that is explicitly not soulmates, usually because one or more have a completely different person as their soulmate. Other than that, they work perfectly well together.
Because like— Our modern view of love has been skewed by soulmates into thinking there is only one perfect person for us that we just need to go out and find and then boom, love just appears from thin air.
Or that, if you have a soulmate, that person should be your first, your last, and your only partner. (With the implication that anything else is a tragedy, if not twisted and wrong.)
And this is what we're fawning over?? Narrative arranged marriage??
There isn't such a thing as having only one "perfect person" for you. People are a lot more similar than we like to think; Some people could easily be content with someone who's 80% close to being their one true love, just as they would with the 100%. Not to mention how love is something you have to put effort into, it's an act of intentional caring and support and kindness that anyone is capable of showing anyone.
There's not just one person out there who has the capability of loving you. You're only limiting yourself by thinking there is.

Y'all out here bagging on self inserts??! ಠಿ_ಠ Sorry..I'm here to insert a myself into every story I write and then die. I have stories where Every character is a self insert and I am vibing, in my element, and having fun.
Every person is probably very interesting in some aspect and if you don't like a story because of Any reason, then stop engaging with it-- I really do not see the issue that is being presented to me, this is actual nonsense

I think one thing that concerns me with storytelling is how some think that there’s a limit to how many times a trope should be used. Almost every trope has been used before, the issue with writing a one in a story shouldn’t be “this idea has been used before many times so they gotta do something else” it should be “this idea has been used before many times but are they putting their own spin on it to separate it from the rest”. I’ve seen many shows with the whole “hard work pays off” trope yet they were all different because of the characters, plot, setting, and so much else despite the similar messages. If you reduce every story to just it’s trope then it’ll all look the same.

I LOVE head-hopping points of view in stories.
I love reading them.
I love writing them.
This is a hill I will die on.

Not-so-hot take:
Hugs (in stories) will always, always, be more intimate than a kiss.
In media, Most characters that have "Romantic tension" that I've seen, after intense climatic scenes, they always seem to cap it off with a kiss.. Which is not something I want to see.
Imagine this: You nearly lost someone important to you and you finally have them back and safe. What should you do? Kiss them? No! You're probably overcome with so much relief and you would probably pull them into a hug and ask if they're ok!
In any circumstance where you think or see a dramatic kiss happening, more often than not, a good emotional hug will do the trick and deliver the message much more effectively.
TL, DR: dramatic climatic kisses are overdone. Intimate hugs are in demand now.

Writing the fanfic you haven’t written in like 2 years >>>>>>>>> writing the character designs/lore/mythology/genealogy of the oc’s you’ve been daydreaming and thinking about for the book you want to write
In all seriousness, specific writer’s block is a bitch

My favourite trope that I also hate.
(Mild spoilers for Doki Doki Literature Club, Breath of the Wild, and Skyward Sword)
Childhood bestfriends love interests are so great you guys, and as the title says, if you were to come up to me and say that you despised that trope with all your heart and soul and had a list of reasons why, I'd probably rant along with you.
See the thing is, CBLI is a trope that you use like a spice to enhance an already well made dish, not something you just dump on plain ass food in a vain attempt to give it flavour.
A good example of how to use this trope would be Sayori from Doki Doki Literature Club, or Zelda from Skyward Sword, though it should be prefaced that while the CBLI aspect makes Sayori go from a good character to a better character, due to the shock of her having depression hitting way harder because the MC never knew, for Skyward Sword it's more so adds to the lore and plot, since Zelda could have met us in highschool or whatever and it wouldn't change much from a character/relationship perspective.
Mipha from Breath of the Wild is an example of a bad CBLI, which tbf, many of the Champions suffer from not being fully fledged characters, really relying on the Champions' Ballad to give them more characterization. Unfortunately not even that could save her character. Which is a shame, cause I actually like Mipha and Mipha x Link, but, at least in my opinion, her being your childhood best friend is basically just an added way to wring your tears out of you, rather than add anything fascinating to her.
Anyway tl;dr write good fucking relationships instead of just slapping em with a childhood bestfriends label and calling it a day okay?

What’s a better trope: almost lovers turned actual lovers or high school sweethearts reunited?

Tired of people acting like a character has to be a good person to be the main character. Most people are kind of shitheads. If I have to read another overly-polite, morally perfect, would-never-be-cancelled-on-twitter main character I'm going to start hissing and scratching.
If you can't root for someone who kind of sucks I don't know what to tell you about how real people work.

I’m just gonna rant about writing a bit because I see a lot of people who write do the same mistake.
flowery language and unusual words. Yes it can be used to emphasize your point .... but let’s be honest you don’t use words like “emphasize” in your day to day speech. And if you want to poetry to cause a reaction. to convey to people how you feel you need to base your poems in a way people will find close to them.
why do you think kids don’t like the books they have to read in school? It’s because they read Illiad or Shakespear. That is something unrelatable to them. Why TF wouldn’t we write papers on Harry Potter, or Or twilight saga books, or whatever.
it’s like “this is older so it’s more cultured/more worthy” and that is actively driving people away from reading because it’s seen as something people who think they are better than others do.
... There’s an argument to be had that that is planed to stop people from reading and broadening their horizints so they wouldn’t become a problem to the status quo but that’s a topic for another day

I think I've figured out what makes an ideal "hero's party"
~ the hero; calls the shots, generally a sort of "everyman" character, usually the heir to a throne, often acts as the moral compass ~ the strategist; usually has a back story where they worked in the royal court ~ the knight; literally a one-man army & always the first to be loyal to the hero and often the MOST loyal ~ the musician; quite flirtatious with everyone, silvertongued, yet still astoundingly good in a fight ~ the badass woman; a beautiful woman who is about equal with the knight in fighting prowess, and turns down all affections and flirtations as a matter of course ~ the thief; can be merged into other roles, this person is all about money and fame ~ the cook; AKA the one who keeps everyone else alive, they manage meals and fix their injured party members, can also be the moral compass and/or voice of reason
*this is just my own opinion **all characters can be any gender, except for the badass woman, and this is because most parties are overwhelmingly male and is to ensure a female character exists - if rest of the cast is female, then flip to male
