Thranduil gave his crown for Legolas to hold.
The prince admired it, how it felt in his hands, the coldness of the metal and the weight of it all. Rubies fashioned into the vivid leaves of autumn gleamed with a fire all of their own. It was a crown fit for a king. "It is magnificent, adar."
Thranduil felt grief gathering in his heart like a storm cloud. "Your mother designed it herself."
Legolas felt his heart break in two. "Oh adar..."
"She gifted me the rubies that went into the leaves," Thranduil reached out and touched the stones with great reverence. "They were actually a wedding gift for her, but she wanted me to have them."
Legolas felt something prick his eyes. How much it must have hurt his father, to wear the crown after his mother's untimely death.
"She said," Thranduil buried a sob. "She said it was to remind me I was lord of a kindly people, and that I must never forget it."
He squeezed his eyes shut, to stem the tears threatening to fall. "I go for the undying lands, so she and I could be together again. The crown is yours now."
Legolas sniffed, but he was happy. At least his father can finally see his mother and his soul will be whole again. "I'll not let the both of you down, adar."
"This realm could not ask for a better king," Thranduil said, feeling a deep sense of pride for his son. "And you will do well, I'm sure of it."
