Love Grows - Part 1
This is my take on teen dad Steve! It was just supposed to be a ficlet, but the word count is currently hovering at 4k and I'm not done, so this will be going up in parts. <3
Ao3 | Part 2
February '85
The rumors have been flying for weeks. It only took one cheerleader to see Steve Harrington out and about with a baby and soon enough the news was all over the school. Nevermind that no one else has even seen said baby, but just the one accusation is enough to send the rumor mill into production.
It's something that had piqued Eddie's interest, but he quickly attributed it to teenagers spreading drama, a fiction created for their own entertainment. That is, until the day Harrington shows up to school with the baby.
The halls are buzzing, more so than usual, and it only takes until second period for Eddie to realize why. The entire class breaks into whispers when Steve walks in with a baby carrier in one hand, a piece of paper in the other, and a diaper bag slung over his shoulder. The paper goes to the teacher, who reads it before saying something to Steve, and Eddie is so curious but unable to hear anything over the chatter in the room.
Eddie can’t take his eyes off Steve for the rest of the class. He watches as the carrier finds a home on the floor, right by Steve’s desk, and Eddie has a perfect view of the little, rosy-cheeked baby girl from his seat two rows behind Steve (at least, Eddie’s assuming it’s a girl. The blanket tucked around her is a soft pink, so-). He sees every time Steve leans over to check on her, sees how her big eyes flick up to look at him, how she smiles around the pacifier in her mouth.
It makes Eddie go all gooey inside; he's always loved kids, always hoped to find a guy who is good with them, and seeing Harrington being so attentive only increases the low-key crush he has on the other guy (he knows it’s a little pathetic, but Steve is very attractive, and Eddie is very gay, sue him). When the class ends, Eddie gathers his stuff slowly so he has an excuse to hang back a little and watch Steve interact with the baby some more, but soon enough the younger is also packed up and out the door.
Eddie doesn't see Steve again until later that day, when he's skipping out on 5th period and hears a baby crying as he passes by a closed classroom door. He peeks in through the window and sees Harrington pacing slowly while holding the baby against his shoulder, one arm supporting her from the bottom as his free hand rubs circles into her back.
For a moment Eddie thinks about walking on, about just leaving Steve alone as he comforts his wailing child, but the cries pull hard on Eddie's heartstrings and he finds himself opening the door and slipping inside.
"Everything okay?" he asks, and Steve looks up in surprise before his expression shifts into something unreadable.
"Yeah, we're fine. She's just extra fussy because she's teething. I came in here because I don't want to disturb anyone else."
Eddie hums and goes to the nearby diaper bag, starts digging through it and is surprised when Steve doesn't tell him to stop. He finds a little bottle of numbing gel and smears some onto his pinky before sliding it into the baby's still wailing mouth, and carefully rubs it over her gums as he coos at her.
"I know, honey, it hurts so bad. It's gonna be okay, though, just you wait."
He glances up to see Steve staring at him, his expression curious, and Eddie suddenly feels overexposed.
"My last neighbor had two jobs and three small kids, so I have a little experience with babies," Eddie explains, needing to fill the sudden silence that falls as the baby calms. His finger is still in her mouth, and he feels no desire to remove it, especially once she starts gnawing on it gently. Steve glances down at his girl before giving Eddie a soft smile, and Eddie's heart flips in his chest.
"That's more than I have, at least. Thanks."
"No worries, man. What, uh- what's her name?"
"Rosemary," Steve says, humming when the baby makes a soft noise. "At least, that's what I'm changing it to, as soon as I'm able."
The warmth that had settled in Eddie's stomach sours a little at Steve's declaration, and as he pulls his finger from the baby's mouth he can't help biting out "And her mom is okay with you changing her name?"
The atmosphere in the room changes as Steve's face crumbles, and Eddie knows he's said something wrong.
"Her mom didn't want anything to do with her," Steve replies softly, and oh no, Eddie instantly feels like a piece of shit. He'd heard the rumors that some girl had just dumped the baby on him, but he didn't think they were true.
"Shit, I'm so sorry, man. I didn't mean to assume anything."
"It's okay. No one really knows about the whole… situation."
There's an awkward pause before Eddie asks "So, Rosemary. Your choice wouldn't happen to be inspired by a certain Edison Lighthouse song, would it?" He smiles when Steve blushes, the pink dusting his face so sweetly as he shrugs.
"It was my grandma's favorite song, and a lot of my happy memories are with her, so... I've already started calling her Rosie, so she'll be used to it."
"It’s a good name," Eddie hums, rubbing his thumb over Rosie's tiny eyebrow. "She's a cute kid, Harrington."
Steve mutters a soft “Thanks,” and then there’s a brief pause before he asks "Do you- do you want to hold her?" and Eddie doesn't even hesitate before nodding and giving a quick “Yes!”
He takes off his jacket and vest in one go, knowing the fabric is a little rough, and takes the baby when Steve offers her to him. He holds her close, one hand supporting her and the other resting on her back, and starts to sway a little. "I haven't held a baby in like, two years. I forgot how calming it is." Steve hums and smiles as he sits on a nearby desk. “Yeah, it is.”
They spend the rest of the time just talking about whatever comes to mind, and it's really fucking nice. Eddie learns about the gaggle of kids Steve babysits ("They're all shitheads, but I love them, even when they're using me as a chauffeur.") and Eddie talks a little about his own friends, his band ("I mean being famous is the end goal, but it's also just fun to get together and be creative just for the sake of it, you know?") and before they know it, the bell is ringing to signal the end of the period.
Steve frowns, a cute pout that tugs on the corners of his mouth, and Eddie has to bite back a smile at the expression. He sets a now sleeping Rosie back into her carrier before shrugging on his jacket and vest, and hesitates for a moment.
"Listen, Harrington. I know that we don't really know each other, but I've seen firsthand how tough this single parent shit can be, so. If you ever need a hand, or need someone to watch her so you can get shit done, you can ask me, yeah? No worry, no judgment."
Steve blinks at him, big hazel eyes flicking between Eddie's like he's making an insight check against Eddie's words. He must like what he finds, because he smiles softly and says "Thanks, Munson."
And Eddie shrugs, and smiles in return. "Call me Eddie, man."

Teen Dad
Quite surprised there’s not a lot of these AUs considering how much Steve apparently sleeps around but anywho.
Teen Dad Steve who finds out one of the girls he’d slept with pre-Nancy is pregnant and he damn well intends on helping out however he can.
Turns out; helping means taking his son (his SON) and having full custody because the mom, no matter how much she wants to be involved, can’t take care of him.
Steve’s alright for the first 6 months of little Louie Harrington’s life.
But then his parents come home and shit hits the fan.
Which— fair enough. He was only 17 and already had a whole ass son, they were gonna freak out.
But kicking him AND aforementioned son out? With no where to go? No money? Barely a job?
That’s just fucked up.
But Steve makes do, and lives out of his car for no more than a month before finally landing his hands on a cheap trailer in Forest Hills.
He and Louie move in and sure, it’s rough. But he’s got a nice paying job at the Diner and yeah maybe he has to skip some classes to get extra money but it’s fine. It pays his bills and rent and that’s all that really matters.
It’s fine.
And then the second wave of Upside Down fuckery hits, and Steve’s suddenly in the hospital with a grade 4 concussion (whatever that means) and his top priority is to make sure someone is with Louie.
Enter Claudia Henderson, Dustin’s mom.
She takes care of Louie for as long as Steve is in the hospital and then some when Steve can’t be left unsupervised in case his head worsens.
And that’s how the Party is introduced to little Louie (as they all call him).
Steve’s stunned to find out that Mike and Lucas are so good with little kids, but the two of them love stopping by the Henderson’s (and later on the trailer) to see little Louie and offer to babysit for him whenever.
The other kids take a little bit of time to warm up to Louie (and the fact that Steve’s actually a parent) but when they do Steve never ceases to have at least one of them over.
And with all the racket brings in the attention of nosy neighbors.
Steve is well accustomed to nosy neighbors. Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln next door to his parents were always looking to snitch on him for something or other.
But Miss Bottomette and her grandchildren Noah and Casey were sweethearts. Steve didn’t mind having them over for dinner or going over there. Miss Bottomette was the one to teach him how to actually put his cooking skills to work.
Linda and Tom, a newly married couple down the road, were quite eccentric but that’s what made them charming. Steve found their dog, Dasher, quite the sweetheart.
And even Mr. Knowles, the grouchy old man next door to Miss Bottomette, seemed to take a liking to Steve and Louie.
It wasn’t long before the story behind the new boy in 2718 New Bird Ave was revealed: Teen Dad Kicked Out.
Then the whole town knew. And while most people were nice about it, even supportive of how he had taken a step into his child’s life, there were always those people who sneered.
Steve ignored them, loving the life he was working on making for himself and Louie in the trailer park.
The only neighbors he never seemed to meet, despite the looming presence, were the Munsons, right across the street.
Steve knew about the Munsons. Well— he knew about Eddie Munson; drug dealer who was on his second run of senior year. Steve actually shared a few classes with him.
He’d yet to meet the mysterious Wayne Munson, but that was to be expected with work schedules.
And then Steve was graduating, and his parents didn’t show up.
But that was totally fine. Cause the kids, Claudia, Joyce— even Hopper with El— were there. They held up little baby Louie while Steve walked the stage.
He’d heard rumors of Eddie Munson having to retake senior year for a third time— but he didn’t dwell on it for too long. Because sure, he missed more than his fair share of classes and scraped by with a C+ average.
But he did it.
And then summer hit, Dustin left for camp, and the mall opened up.
Steve picked up a job at Scoops Ahoy, cutting back on his hours at the Diner but still staying there because the money was needed and the tips were lovely.
And he meets Robin Buckley, and actually talks to Eddie Munson every once in a while when he stops in with his band, and lets the kids sneak into the movies because he’ll be damned if he robs them of a normal summer.
And then Dustin comes back and their reunion is short-lived because Russians are hellbent on torching non-existent information out of Steve and he’s busy getting his third concussion and then there’s a fucking flesh monster and Billy and Hopper for protecting them and—
It’s not a good night.
But then he’s rushed to the hospital and he tries to call Miss Bottomette only for the call to refuse to go through and shitfuckgoddammit.
Because what about Louie?
Miss Bottomette said she’d be alright watching Louie until Steve got home, but Steve wasn’t able to go home until someone was able to make time to take him home.
Usually, he’d lean on Hopper for this stuff, since his parents were out of the question. But—
But Hoppers dead.
So he’s stuck at the hospital for another day or two until finally, Claudia comes to pick him up.
He’s with Dustin in the backseat of the car, anxiously bouncing his leg and biting at his fingers and nails until Dustin gives in and just holds his hand. Robin’s there to, having been able to leave after the first night but coming with Claudia to pick him up. Steve’s relieved to have them both close by, even if his hands reach for Erica subconsciously.
His trailer’s empty when he gets home, and Miss Bottomette isn’t answering the door.
Steve’s on the brink of a full blown breakdown before Mr. Knowles— bless his heart— points them across the street.
The Munsons apparently have his son and have for a bit now since Miss Bottomette had a minor seizure and couldn’t be left alone with Louie. Mr. Knowles assured Steve that she and the kids were fine and staying with him for the moment.
Steve wasted no time afterwards sprinting to the Munsons and knocking on the door. Dustin and Robin are close behind him, Claudia waiting patiently in the driveway.
The door is answered by a gruff looking old man that’s taller than Dustin but slightly shorter than both Robin and Steve.
“You Harrington?”
Steve nods so fast he faintly wonders if that’s how bobble heads feels.
They’re let in in no time and the old man— the infamous Wayne Munson— calls out of Eddie.
Eddie Munson emerges a moment later with little Louie in his arms, bouncing softly on his feet to keep the baby calm.
Steve is in front of him in a second, scooping Louie gently out of his arms and into his own.
He doesn’t realize he’s crying until Dustin’s rubbing his arms and Robin his back. Claudia is talking to Wayne, explaining what had happened (or the cover story version at least) and Eddie is hanging back a few feet from the three of them.
Robin takes little Louie in her arms and shoos Steve to the couch to calm down.
“Let him meet his auntie, Steve. You take a minute to breathe now, yeah?”
Steve was led to the couch with a soft hand on his shoulder from Eddie Munson, and they sat side by side while Steve worked on easing his breathing and to stop fucking crying.
Eddie’s shushing him and after a moment (and a clearly pointed cleared throat from Robin) Eddie wraps his arms around Steve’s shaking figure.
They leave the Munsons’ trailer is promises of new babysitters and a new friendship.
And then the fuckery that’s 1986 happens.

"Alright, here we go!" The bartender announces, leaning up to place the drinks on the bar.
"That's one whiskey, neat—" He says, sliding the lowball cocktail glass with amber liquid in front of Eddie.
"—And one Whammin' Slammin' Booty-Bangin' Pina Colada."
He places the extravagant cocktail in front of Steve. It's decorated to the nines with a straw, an umbrella, a piece of pineapple, and a little bit of tinsel on a toothpick. A whole party decoration in a drink.
"You guys have a good night." The bartender says warmly, already moving down the bar to tend to other customers.
Eddie stares down at the whiskey in the glass before him and pouts a little. Beside him and watching his boyfriend closely, Steve rolls his eyes.
"Oh, quit being dramatic," Steve says, sliding the cocktail across the bar so it's in front of Eddie, who had ordered it. He steals the glass of whiskey back at the same time.
"It happens every time."
"It happens most times."
"That isn't much better!" Eddie protests, even as he leans down and takes a long sip from the straw while they both get to their feet and leave the bar. Steve's hunting for a table they can snag, his eyes narrowed in focus. Eddie follows him blindly, his cocktail cupped in both hands.
"I'm serious, Steve! What is it about this adorable face—" He says, gesturing to himself, barely letting go of the straw to talk. It doesn't seem to faze him that Steve doesn't even glance back. "—Says I don't want to enjoy a Whammin' Bammin' Big Booty Colada?"
Steve comes to a stop, pausing his search for a moment to look back at Eddie. His expression seems unimpressed on the surface but Eddie can see his lips twitching up at the corners.
"We've had this conversation too many times, babe." He sighs halfheartedly and takes a quick sip of his own whiskey, eyes casting back out across the bar. "You have scary dog energy, you know this. You specifically dress like this on purpose."
Eddie picks up the pineapple wedged on the edge of his glass and bites into it, sending it down with another sip of his cocktail as Steve leads them further into the back of the bar. He finally spots a spare empty table.
"C'mon, I think I found one." Steve urges, one hand snaking back to make sure Eddie's following.
"Is it a crime to wish to not fall victim to stereotypes?" Eddie prattles on, following Steve duly by slipping his hand into Steve's outstretched one. His cocktail wobbles precariously as he takes another gulp.
"Like when that waitress gave me your awful black coffee! And you got my delicious delicacy that I paid extra hard-earned money for..."
+
i like to think that when steve and eddie go out, people always lean into their assumptions and are like hmm ok preppy boy with the polo? oh he gets the fruity cocktail! and eddie is always like >:( i don't want this expensive puddle of piss gimme the bonanza supreme cocktail pls. like excuse me i paid for that.

Robin: So how’s fatherhood treating you?
Steve: Good. I didn’t expect this much crying, though
Robin: Don’t worry, it’s normal for babies
Steve: Nah. The baby is fine. I was talking about Billy
Billy, sobbing from the nursery: I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Sam and Bucky taking in Steve's child/teen
Tumblr media
Platonic Bucky x gn!yn
Platonic Sam x gn!yn
Summary: Bucky and Sam Being loving, overprotective father figures for Steve's child.
You were heartbroken when Steve didn't come back after returning the infinity stones. You were also betrayed that he talked to Bucky about it but not you.
Sam saw how uncomfortable you were around Bucky and immediately took you in. You stayed with him and started healing from the pain your father left you with.
When you cry over your dad, Sam pulls you into a hug and holds you tightly. He rubs your back in hopes of comforting you.
Eventually you start to miss Bucky so Sam starts to get in contact with him. Both are extremely overprotective of you and treat you like your their own child.
You are closer to Sam because of the time spent with him after loosing your dad, so Bucky gets jealous and tries to win you over.
They joke a lot about who you like more. If John Walker messes with you, he'll have to deal with two pissed off dads. Let's just say he won't be near you again.
Bucky tells you stories about your dad and what he was like before Captain America. Sometimes the two of you cry while thinking of happy memories with Steve.
Bucky and Sam love you more than life itself and are willing to do anything to keep you happy.

most things are the same in s4 except steve has a daughter that was dropped on his doorstep before he got his scoops job.
so instead of eddie having to listen to dustin, mike, and lucas (and max if she’s around) going on and on about steve, they’re blabbing about steve and rosie.
eddie has no fuckin idea who rosie is and she’s apparently coming to pick up the kids, but dustin is clearly excited.
“dude, rosie’s coming today. do you know how hard it is to get him to bring her? he always leaves her with robin!” which, okay, since when does robin buckley hang out with steve harrington?
and mike and dustin are arguing over who gets rosie while lucas just hopes this means he get shotgun.
eddie tries to ask his friends, his og friends, who this “rosie” might be. jeff hoesntly couldn’t care less, gareth thinks it’s a new girlfriend, and grant has some big idea about her being an undercover spy disguised as a supermodel. that’s the only time jeff will chime in with a “she’s probably just a friend”.
and then it’s 7pm and a maroon beamer is pulling into the parking lot. steve gets out of the car and like always, he goes inside to collect his boys.
but this time there’s a baby on his hip.
chubby cheeks and rolls galore and a huge toothless smile. brown curls and big brown eyes. dude, eddie’s shocked enough already. but then dustin runs over, shouting her name.
“rosieeeee!!!!” and he grabs her under the armpits, steals her from steve and spins her around. lucas goes to say hi to his babysitter, mike waits for his turn to hold the baby.
eddie is left to stand there and pick his jaw up off the floor before he starts collecting flies because why the fuck does steve harrington have a baby? and why does it make him hotter?

Request: Sam Wilson x younger, platonic! reader
Plot: Reader relaxing around Sam’s place in Louisiana-Bucky can be in it, reader’s relationship with him would be platonic or familial.
Louisiana Sun
steve, sam, bucky x platonic!daughter!reader, generous nods (i practically wrote a whole confession) to sarahbucky
things; dad!steve rogers moments, over protective steve, reader makes some risky decisions, bucky and same are basically your uncles, bucky is in love with sarah and louisiana by extension,
w/c; 4k (reader had to do a lot of convincing to let steve believe she wont get kidnapped in the presence of two soldiers)
Tumblr media
You’ve never felt love like you did in Louisiana.
The sun baked grass, the humid winds kissing your shoulder. The vibrancy of colour and life that explodes on the streets, and in the caring waves of neighbours.
You taste home whenever Steve drives you up to Sam’s rickety gate, slamming the car door open to his objection and running through the winding bend of grass and willow trees. You can't wait for Steve to pull into Sam’s drive way, the bleached wooden porch calls to you in a way you can’t ignore.
So you find it exceptionally painful whenever Steve is swarmed with so much work he can’t make the drive up. And there was no way Steve would even let you take a plane ride by yourself, he says it’s cause he’d be too afraid but you think it’s because you help with the dishes.
It’s Friday evening at the Rogers, a night of pizza and Noir crime films you both adore. It’s spring break, and you've spent every waking hour with Steve cooped up at home. You don't mind it, it has made up for a lot of the father daughter time missed between missions. But god you can’t come back to school and say you spend the holidays with Captain America again.
“So..Sam called” You murmur, fainting nonchalance whilst you watch his every expression out of the corner of your eye. Gene Tirney’s whiskey voice blares from the TV screen in front of you.
“Uhm?” Steve replies with his mouth full.
“Yeah, he was wondering when I’d come down again to see ‘em. Bucky’s spending some time there too, helping out with the boat and Sarah” You reply, stretching your arms out in front of you.
“And what did you say” Steve replies after wiping away the smudges of sauce from his chin, eyes widening
“I said I’ll have to check with Corporal Rogers first” You tease
“Hey, I’m not anywhere near..”
“Dad we haven’t left this house in weeks, I’m not going to go another week locked in here” You reply
“I let you go places..remember Monday?”
“When you asked me to buy your cream of mushroom from the Bodega?!” You shriek, eyes boggling.
“Yes..?” Steve replies unsure, eyebrows furrowing
“That was a chore. For your own benefit by the way, I mean who in their right mind likes cream of mushroom?” You reply
“Ay, I’m not going to let you disrespect my taste in food for the second time today” Steve replies
“Oh please, I barely said anything about your choice of onions as a pizza topping-
“My pizza topping?? I was reconsidering dinner when you wanted pineapples. Fruit should not belong on pizza, there are rules. When I was your age we had-”
“To boil everything or else we’d get tetanus and die” You moan, rolling your eyes
“No..when I was your age I don't think pineapples even made it to New York yet” Steve murmurs, hand on his chin as if to truly consider it.
“Are you sure you're my father?” You reply, and are met with a soft cushion flying towards you.
“Work’s just been a lot lately kid. And I miss you too darn much to let you leave my sight. You know how I am, I see kids go missin’ everyday. Don’t know what I’d do if that happened to you cause I was reckless”
“You aren't getting sick of my face?”
“Never”
“You’re not being reckless Dad, I’m going to be with Sam for gods sake, and Bucky too! In Louisiana of all places! They probably mug you with bugnes as pistols” You giggle
“Don’t joke about that"
“Oh come on! You both were on a team for like eighty years, you don't trust them?”
“Of course I trust them, they’re your designated ‘if i get in a freak accident they take over’ people.
“Hey! Don’t joke about that” You quip
“I just like knowing you're near” Steve replies after chuckling
“I could just stay for a weekend! I’ll be back before you know it. Swear” You plead.
“You say that now..” Steve cocks his eyebrows, part of him knew you'd stay six months there if you could
You put on your best heartbroken pouted face whilst Steve goes through the motions of being finally convinced. His eyebrows furrow, his hand coming up to scratch at his golden locs as he considers it.
His shoulders slump, and before he can even say a gruntled “Fine..” You’re cheering, getting up to twirl around the lamp lit living room. Steve chuckles at your antics, eyes glinting with light at the sight of you jumping in happiness.
He knew he’d say yes in the end. You're his little girl, he can’t ever say no to you.
“Whilst you're up, switch out Laura for somethin’ else. We still got a checklist to get through”
“Isn’t it getting close to your bed time, senior citizen?” You giggle, reaching for the box of recorded movie tapes under the bookshelf dresser.
“Age ain't going to stop me from showing you what good cinema is” Steve barks, reaching for his glass of water gingerly.
Tumblr media
You’re half through the Maltese Falcon, Sam Spade flickering his cigarette in flashes of black and white when Steve's phone rings.
He groans loudly, lying on his back with his legs stretched and laying on the coffee table with the bitten edges of pizza crust left over. The couch buzzes beneath your weight, somewhere deep within the crevices near spare change and ink pens it vibrates.
“You gonna get that old man?” You turn to Steve, mouth filled with cheesy saucy bread
“Easy now Rogers, and finish your mouthful”
You roll your eyes as Steve searches under the blanket stretched across you both, a sound of triumph leaves his throat when he grasps the metallic slick edges.
“Rogers” Steve grunts into the phone
“Ah Fury…Mhmm..didn’t they have Clint on that?..Right..”
You raise your eyebrows at the conversation between Steve and Fury, Steve pinches the bridge of his nose as he plops his head back against the head of the couch.
“For three weeks? Fury, you know I got Y/N to take care of. It’s why I transferred out of the field, it isn’t ‘cause I like reading” Steve murmurs, eyes cutting to you
Your eyebrows widen at that, mouthing to ‘pass the phone’ to Steve who shakes his head at you. Growing impatient, and longing to see Sam, Bucky and Sarah you make a mental note to blame them for the scolding of a century as you reach and swipe the phone from Steve's lazy grip.
“Yeah, I don’t know Fury- HEY”
“This is Steve Rogers manager speaking, yes he can and will be there for the mission”
“Y/N” Fury replies, his voice lit with a hint of humour at your antics.
You wrestle to escape Steve's reflexes, luckily you're a teenage girl who wants something so you're obviously faster. You throw the same pillow Steve had thrown at you before in his face, running behind the couch with the phone tucked between your ear and shoulder, poking your tongue out at Steve.
“Hey Fury! How’s the wife and kids” You remark
“Who told you about my wife and kids”
“Oh Fury, think those confidential documents are safe from a certain Spider?”
“Goddamit Parker..” Fury mutters
You doge a flying pillow headed your way, Steve’s face growing red with frustration at you missing every hit. Super soldier my ass.
“Where’ll Steve be stationed?”
“Prague-wait, aren’t you twelve? I hate to say it but the soldiers right, you can’t just be left alone-”
“One word Fury. Louisiana, Beignets and a bird”
“That’s three words”
“Yeah well I ain't twelve but I didn’t correct you on that did I?”
“I’m an old man, Y/N” Fury replies gruffly
“I’m pretty sure you were in the hospital hallway at my birth..” You murmured
“How did you-?!” Fury replies
You're too busy skipping zig zag across the living room to escape the pieces of pizza, cushions and cd covers flying your way to hear him. You heard it once that it helps dodge bullets, and with the horsepower behind your own fathers arm, you think it matches.
“Makes sense anyways, there isn't a Wilson and Barnes without a Rogers nearby. You guys are like goddamn pack members” Fury replies “Let Steve know to be packed and ready by Sunday”
“Bye Fury” You giggle, swiping the red button before throwing the phone immediately at Steve who lunges for it.
Running to hide behind the first thing you see, you peek out from the forked leaves of a potted plant to see a very angry and very dishevelled Steve.
“Is now a good time to say I got a 90 on my science quiz?” You reply with a gulp
Tumblr media
You’re smart enough not to run out the car seat the second Sam’s house comes into view, despite the itchiness festering in your bones driving though Louisiana and not being able to finally set your feet down onto it.
Steve called Sam the next morning, and you had already packed a suitcase of clothes and necessities a few days prior. You always felt healed after every road trip, and tuning out blues and Leon Bridges whilst driving through the country felt like a respite in itself.
As Steve pulls into the dirt drive way, you see Sam perches on the deck waving towards you both. You squeeze your hands into fists until he switches the ignition off, and then you are too. The car door springs open and you're rushing into Sam’s arms, giggling as he twirls you around till you're dizzy and sick.
“You’re Father has been keeping you from us” Sam says, shooting an accusatory dagger towards Steve who has begun to unload your belongings.
“Hello to you too Sam” Steve shouts from behind the open boot with a gruff voice.
Bucky’s booming voice makes its appearance before he does, rounding the corner of the back yard wiping grease off his hands onto a dirty old rag.
“If it isn’t Miss Rogers! Took ya long enough” He replies, pulling you into a tight protective hug whilst Steve sets your duffel bags on the porch edge.
Sam turns to Steve, pulling him into a hug as well, his hand slapping his back with a loud umph.
“Shame you couldn’t stay over here as well” Sam says
“Fury. Clint needs some help down in Nové Město” Steve says tiredly after embracing Bucky.
“When Duty calls” You reply
“Steve answers” Bucky and Sam say in unison.
“It wasn’t me this time” Steve points at you accusingly “The drive up here made me start regretting it enough. Lay off will ya”
“It was okay? We’ve been getting some Black bear sightings along Wood Lake” Sam replies
“We were all right. At least I won’t have a nagging buzz in my ear the drive back” Steve teases,
“Hey!” You reply, playfully pushing his shoulder.
“Don’t worry Y/N, You’re ours now. You no longer have to face that tyrant” Bucky chirps, pulling his hair back into a bun.
“And this tyrant” Steve shifts, looking down at his watch “needs to start heading back”
“Already? Can’t stay for lunch, Sarah’s making her seafood boil” Sam replies
Steve audibly groans, rocking on the balls of his feet as he shakes his head at the thought of missing out on Sarah Wilson's Louisiana renowned seafood.
“She is? Oh my god that better not be a lie Sam” You reply. Sarah’s cooking was like no other, you’ve been begging her to hurry up and make the next best selling cookbook.
“Yup, she's got me on shucking duty” Bucky says, feigning exasperation that held very thinly over the clear adoration Bucky had whenever he talked about Sarah.
You look towards Steve, and he raises his eyebrows as you both communicate silently. Bucky was head over heels in love with Sarah Wilson, it was getting annoying seeing them do this dance.
“Alright, time for goodbyes Kiddo” Steve replies after stifling the smirk that tugs at his mouth whilst he watches Bucky crane his neck at the sound of Sarah coming through the door.
“Steve Grant Rogers, you better not have thought of leaving without giving me a proper hello” Sarah calls, her dark coils pulled into a high bun that has begun to uncurl and frame her face.
“Tsk, Sarah. Of course I wouldn't leave before seeing the better Wilson.
“You got that right” Sarah chuckles, pulling Steve into a hug. Sam grumbles profanities under his breath as he rolls his eyes.
“Where are the boys?”
“Staying with a friend, did ya'll know something about this ‘hoverboard’ mess that's going around?” Sarah questions, exhaustion clear in her tone from dealing with two children wanting something.
“Could probably call Tony and he’d just make one for you” Steve replies with a chuckle at Sarah’s tone.
“Great idea soldier. Knew you were gonna leave early so I packed you a little somethin’ for the road” Sarah smirks, passing the tote bag on her shoulder that even you could smell had something decadent wrapped in careful parchment.
“Sarah Wilson, the woman you are” Steve replies, grasping the bag gingerly with a sigh as he peers into the wrapped dish.
“Ya can say that again” Bucky mutters softly under his breath, his hand coming up to scratch at the nape of his neck as Sarah shifts her gaze to him.
“Okay, I’ll admit it I’m gonna miss you oldie” You say, rocking n your feet as the feeling of separation begins to settle.
“Com ‘ere kid”
You quickly run into the open arms of Steve, blinking back tears as you lean your head on his broad shoulder. Rocking back and forth in his embrace Steve caresses your back tenderly.
“I’ll be back before you know it. We might even stay a bit longer when I do come back” Steve whispers in your ear.
You lift your head “Really? You mean that?” You whisper, as you meet his gaze, searching for any sign of a lie.
“When have I ever lied?”
“Well there was that one time you said you weren't scared of spiders..” You reply before Steve quickly cuts you off
“Okay that's enough”
You giggle, before Steve squeezes you in his arms. Shaking his head as you both part and he sets you back down.
“Never gets easier saying goodbye'' Steve replies, before moving to embrace Sam and Bucky, and placing a chaste kiss on Sarah's cheek before turning back to you.
“Now, call me before bed and in the morning, okay?” Steve replies, his tone morphing into an authoritarian lilt.
“Yep, and I'll text you some photos and videos throughout” You reply sweetly, as Steve nods along with unblinking eyes.
“What are you doing”
“I’m just taking a mental note of how you look exactly as I left you, and I will notice any piercings, hair changes and god forbid tattoos-”
“Okay, okay, just take a photo while you’re at it”
Steve shuffles on his feet, moving the back to his shoulder as he pulls out his phone
“Oh you aren’t actually-” You say, before the flash of Steve's camera cuts you off midway.
“Alright, I think I’m good to go” Steve replies, before nodding your playful punch on his shoulder.
You walk Steve to the car, hugging him goodbye again before Sam and Bucky exchange some information about something confidential, top secret, and definitely one you shouldn't listen in on.
But you do.
And it’s boring anyway.
Tumblr media
The kitchen is bustling by mid afternoon, shells of craw fish and prawns scattered on the table counter and the dirty water of shelled oysters flowing down the edge of the grassy front lawn.
The smells of cajun seasoning and buttered corn leaves you asking Sarah when it's done every five minutes till she’s banishing you from the kitchen and sending you off with a lemonade.
You move through the littered toys and figurines AJ and Cass had left in their clear hurry to spend the night at a friend's and push the screen door open with your hip. Careful to not spill your drink, you take a seat on one of the rocking chairs on the porch with a sigh.
The sounds of the nearby pier docked with ships and fisherman makes its way even down the rocky dirt roads of Sam’s place, easy against the chirps and rustles of shrikes up above the oak and willow trees around the house.
You don't come to Louisiana to escape noise, life is all around you when you pay attention to it. New York is always awake, even at night- especially at night. Louisiana has a kind of hum that’s different, it feeds your soul.
Curling your feet underneath you, the screen door opens with a wack as Bucky stumbles onto the porch. The moisture of the beer drips down his fingers as he sits down on the adjacent chair to you.
“Sarah kick you out too?” You reply with a giggle as Bucky grumbles under his breath.
“I was just askin’ if we need to make this much food for four people..” Bucky replies, shaking his head with regret as he rests it on the back of the chair.
“Ooh rookie move mister” You reply teasingly, before Bucky cuts his eyes to you
“Oh and asking the equivalent of “are we there yet” is any better” Bucky banters, taking a swing of his beer before immediately grimacing.
“How’s you get Steve to agree to leave you for three weeks” Bucky starts, bringing his feet up to rest against the porch wooden fence.
“Oh I didn’t, Fury called and I just snatched the phone and told him he’d be there” You replied
“And you’re still breathing?!” Bucky replies incredulously
“I’m shocked by myself. But what about you?”
“Me? What about me?” Bucky replies with an eyebrow raised
“Are you staying in Louisiana indefinitely? Makes it a lot easier to convince Dad to move down here too” You continue
“I..I don't know. Maybe. Helping Sam out with the boat and everything has been good. Really good in fact.  The people here aren't afraid of me..or this” Bucky points to the vibranium compartments of his arm.
“I wasn’t, I knew they wouldn't be too” You muse, smiling as Bucky looks up at you.
“Thanks kid. Finally starting to feel normal again, part of the community now I suppose. It’s weird, even back in Brooklyn i never felt so..a part of something before”
“Can’t just up and leave ‘em like I would’ve before. Especially when Sam needs my help”
“And Sarah” You add, hiding the smile behind a nonchalant nod.
“Yeah..Sarah” Bucky adds, his eyes glazing over as he leans back, eyes shifting to the towering tree leaves that cover half the sky.
You watch him carefully, seeing the way his leg jitters a little at the mere mention of Sarah, how so in love he is with her and you can’t help yourself anymore.
“You love her, don't you?” You murmur, as Bucky quickly swings his head to look at you.
“Hmp?”
“Sarah?” You inquire, raising your eyebrows with a smirk.
“I see the way you look at her,  the way you both look at each other, and I’m here practically every summer break. Which is never”
Bucky’s face morphs from shock to realisation, sitting upright as he scratches at his dark overgrown hair.
“You think she looks at me? I mean, in that way?” Bucky asks after a pregnant pause, his voice quiet and filled with anxious shyness. He can’t even look at you, looking out into the rounding hills of the roads and houses ahead.
“I know she does. Let it be the teenage girl who can tell who is acting like two love sick high schoolers” You grin, as Bucky’s eyes twinkle, unable to hide the adoration and love about to burst through.
“Or let that Chef who came down from Chicago swept her off her feet..what was his name again?” You tease, wiggling your eyebrows as you take a sip of your melting lemonade.
“Easy now, Rogers” Bucky replies with a bark, jaw clenching at the thought of Sarah being with anyone else.
“Foods ready!” Sam calls out from the kitchen window and Bucky helps you up from your seat, tipping out the last of his drink onto the stepped on grass before you both make your way back inside.
Tumblr media
The thick book raised high above your face does little to block out the midday sun, you’re lying on the dock, the wooden planks warm underneath your shirt as the ends of your hair dip into the lake’s surface.
It’s a quiet hidden sort of mystical place, off the side of Sarah’s house where practically nobody but the Wilson's and by extension now you and Bucky now know about. Sarah divulged memories of spending new years here with the boys and their father years before, how it seemed likes their own little getaway.
The yellowed pages of Bucky’s first edition Hobbit flick between your fingers as you fly through the adventures of Bilbo and the fantastical realm of Erebor. You notice AJ and Cass’s squeals and laughter suddenly silent, and for the first time since you had laid down you sit upright looking across the grassy field.
The boy’s frisbee you had lost many games to earlier is dashed to the side, and as you wipe lazy exhaustion from your eyes to see Sam pull out a notebook and pen on the rug. Dusting off the dirt from the dock, you make your way through the grassy foxgloved trail towards him.
“Where did everyone go?” You question, throwing the book onto the soft cushioned floor.
“Bucky and Sarah had to take the boys home, AJ somehow ended up hurting himself on grass. And before you ask no I don’t know how”
You giggle before plopping down on some cushions, stretching your arms out with a groan.
It’s easy to talk to Sam. About school, about New York, about life, everything. The unrelenting sun helps ease the discomfort of certain things sure, but Sam has always been your person.
“Whatcha doing?” You ask, looking at Sam scribble some things into the paper
“I like to write sometimes. Not for anyone else, just for myself. Can be about how I’m feeling some days, people I remember, hell even some poetry”
“I tried the whole journal taking thing, the counselor at school said it might be good since I don't have a “conventional family dynamic”. Psycho babble for, everyone you know and love have fought aliens in space and have the capability to take down a government.
“I mean, there was that one time the Quinjet dropped you off at school” Sam chuckled
“That was one time! And that was because Tony hates traffic” You add, shaking your head at the embarrassment of disembarking from a 30 feet aircraft that works as a spaceship.
“But it must be hard, ya know? Having to share your dad with the rest of the world”.
“Hm? Sarah’s boys share you with them too”
“Yeah, but you know it's different. Parents are meant to be plain, they’re meant to live through us. Imprint all their expectations and dreams onto us”
“Well, maybe you should start seein’ things at what they ‘could’ be, instead of what they're meant to be. Sure, I don't have the kind of Dad that comes from the office at 5pm and has days off. But I get..this. You and Bucky, Sarah and a damn Asgardian King as my family. My Dad spent his whole life fighting, showed me what having immovable morals and good character makes of you. Wouldn’t trade it for the world, makes you feel a lot safer when there's an inbuilt super hero team on speed dial too”
“Damn you Rogers and your century wisdom. You spent a couple decades in the ice too?”
“Haha, don't group me with that icicle.
Birds chirp and warm wind tussles the grass you lay on.
“Oh Louisiana"
“Nothing like it ey?”
“In the entire world. Get now why Steve never allowed me to stay longer than a week”
“Why’s that?” “Cause I'd never leave. I'd probably force him to retire and build a house with his bare hands across the road from you”.
Sam chuckles.
The sound of footsteps makes its way from the trail, and Bucky appears rounding the corner, his vibranium arm glinting in the sun.
“Do I hear the familiar crinkling of Guidry’s?” You shout out excitedly as Bucky raises the familiar peach coloured paper bag in the air
“Easy with the goods, Barnes” Sam calls out, before Bucky plops down next to you, ripping open the pastry bag to unveil the perfectly powdered beignets still warm.
“Told Elijah you had come down for a visit and he gave a little extra” Bucky says, before reaching for one of the pastries dusted in snow.
“Yeah…Steve was right” You reply, after groaning at the sweet and airy taste of the most perfect fluffy pastry you have ever tasted
“Bout what?” Sam and Bucky both say in unison mouths filled and faces covered in powdered sugar
“I’m never gonna leave” You giggle, wiping the sugar from your chin.
The sun makes its disembark down the coastline, as tunes of Etta Jones, Rockettes and Hozier murmur from Sam’s faded blue speaker. You fill your stomach on sugary beignets and sweet tea, leaving sticky fingerprints on card faces through hour long games of Euchre through the afternoon light.

ONE
"Okay, aunt Janet said it's a right turn. Across the street from Big Buy. It's a big sign, I can't miss-" you grumble as soon as you realize you've done just that.
"Mama! Mama look!" your daughter is giggling in her car seat, she's pointing to the park on her side of the street and you pull in.
"We play?"
"No, sweetie. Maybe later, 'kay?" You smile at her and reach out, smoothing her shaggy bangs behind her ears. "I've gotta trim your hair later."
"No!"
"Yes." you laugh, pulling your Mustang out into traffic and merging with it. Your daughter is eating the fries you got her on the way into town. "We live here now, mama?"
You nod and smile. "Yeah."
"Aunt Wobin? She live here too?" Stevie has her little head tilted, staring at you with big eyes. You laugh and nod. "Yeah baby, she lives here too."
Your daughter is so little. So sweet and she's so happy. For her, this has been one big and happy adventure and you're satisfied to keep it that way. She's too little to go through what your own mother -Robins aunt, put you through before finally throwing you out. She doesn't know that you're silently freaking out right now because this is a huge risk you're taking.
The video store Robin works at for the summer comes into view with only 1 car, a brown BMW, parked outside. "I thought Robin was working." you wonder as you turn the engine off and slip your feet back into your shoes.
"Mama. Shoes."
"Good girl." you nod, slipping out of your seat to shut the door with your hip. You make your way around to your daughters side of the car and open her door, leaning into the car to unfasten Stevie and attempt cleaning her up and putting her shoes on before you go inside.
As you do this you're totally unaware that your being watched. Steve's leaned in the door, arms folded. And he’s trying hard not to stare at you but his eyes are moving up your body slowly. As you straighten to full height, he swallows down a lump in his throat and clears it.
Grin in place as he really takes you in. Your little girl is the most adorable kid he's seen, like her mom, he thinks to himself as he hears the little girl with light brown hair and freckles call you Mama.
He's thrown for a loop because you look as old as he is.
"Is Robin Buckley here?" you ask after a few seconds. He's wondering if maybe you're not the cousin she always finds a way to slip into conversations lately, but he shoves the thought that follows this wonder down deep, ,, if this is ___, she's beautiful. took my breath away, honestly." because the thought is dangerous and it's one he refuses to allow himself to even begin entertaining.
Because the second he does even attempt entertaining anything lately, his time trapped in Vecna's mindscape comes rushing back and he can hear it all again on repeat. And it hurts, it makes him bitter, it makes him angry all over again.
Steve's hand raises and rests against the back of his head. He smiles at you and nods. Tries to answer your question but the words get hung in his throat. You're both standing in the doorway, nearly body to body and he takes a deep breath, getting frustrated with himself because he's so distracted by you and your adorable little girl -and a dream that he's been trying to forget about lately because he doesn"t even know if it should happen anymore and he's trying to be okay with that fact- he can't think straight let alone speak properly.
He nods. "She's uh..she's inside. In back, I think." he finally manages to answer, biting back a groan as your soft body brushes against his as you work your way into the store.
"Robbie! Hey!" you're calling out to your cousin as you stop in front of the circular counter in the middle of the store and switch your little girl from one hip to the other.
Your little girl is playing peek a boo with him and he's laughing and it's probably the first time he has in weeks at this point. "You're a cutie, yeah." He's smiling at Stevie and she reaches out for him, dropping the purple stuffed alligator in the process. Steve bends to pick it up and he hands it to her. She gives him a gap toothed grin, "Fank you, sir."
He laughs. "What's your name, huh?"
"I Stevie Robin."
Steve feels that yearning tug at him and he shoves it down. Hiding the pain at his own thoughts, he smiles at your daughter. "I'm Steve."
"Mama! Mama!"
"What is it, sweetie?"
"He Steve. Kinda like me!" she giggles, turning her gaze to Steve as she adds in awe, "Pretty Steve."
You're torn between blushing and laughing. Then you make the mistake of really looking at Steve. And it hits you, you're wondering if he's the same Steve your cousin Robin is talking so much about all the time.
Your daughter isn't wrong, not even in the slightest. You tilt your head slightly and you're taking him in. From the shaggy hair that hangs over his forehead and covers one brow to the way he's got his hand resting on his head calls attention to that hand. By the time you reach his eyes -and immediately get lost in their warmth and depth, you're fidgeting a little. But then you're staring at his mouth, from the perfectly formed cupids bow to the thickness of his lips. His shoulders are broad, biceps fight against the restraint of a beige polo shirt.
If this were the version of you you used to be, before Stevie, before the way her father ripped out your heart, you're absolutely sure you'd be in prime flirt mode right now. But you're not. And your life is totally different now. You have Stevie, she comes first.
The thickening tension is shattered by your cousin Robin and not a second too soon. She's racing towards you with open arms and you find yourself and your daughter being squeezed til you almost can't breathe. The hug breaks and the two of you are laughing and happy and Robin pulls away to look at you as she lets out a long whistle. You shake your head and laugh. "I thought you two weren't coming in until next week!"
You laugh quietly. " The uh..my apartment got broken into. And then my boss pissed me off and I quit. It was now or never, so here I am."
"Your apartment got broken into?" Steve is gaping. You nod. "It happens."
"It shouldn't." Steve answers, staring down at you and Robin clocks it immediately.
She's been talking about him to you a lot -and vice versa, because after his speech in the RV, she started to casually mention you in conversation to him a little more too- . She does this hoping she'd make you -or him, at least a little curious, especially since the night she got a 2 am drunken call from him in which he went on this tangent about how bitter watching everyone start their lives was making him. Then he confided something to her that blindsided her with just how perfect he might be for you.
He wants a family. He needs people to take care of. He really needs to be taken care of in return because Robin knows him like the back of her hand at this point and she knows he's a good man.
She knows that you're dying for the same, it's all you've ever talked about, especially all the times your mom would hurt, use, lie to or turn her back on you, disappointing you over and over.
"Yeah, well.." you mumble, eyes locked on his. "Just glad Stevie was with a sitter and I was picking up a shift at the bar down the street."
"Yeah." Steve mutters. Your voice is soft, a sweet and lazy drawl he could listen to for hours and as soon as this one comes to mind, he's rubbing the back of his neck.
Stevie reaches for him. You start to object but Steve takes her into his arms and smiles, acting as if it's nothing. As he takes her around the little store, you can finally pull yourself together just a little. Robin clears her throat. "That's Steve Harrington, by the way. My best friend. Well, my other best friend." she gives you a soft grin. You hug her and as the hug breaks you laugh softly. "I named her after you and Stevie Nicks."
Robin is speechless, gaping at you as if she might just cry. Then she laughs softly, nodding to the way Stevie is just content to be carried around by Steve. You laugh softly. Tear your eyes off the two because it's concerning just how easy it is to let your imagination run wild. "She doesn't meet a stranger."
"She takes after her mommy." Robin teases as she watches you watching Steve with your daughter. "Nick was an asshole. He didn't deserve either of you."
"Fuck Nick." you mumble, tearing your eyes off of Steve and the way he's so good with Stevie because if you don't..it's a slippery slope. Robin's caught you though and she can't help but smile to herself. She clears her throat. "You're staying with us, right?"
"Yeah…aunt Janet, she told me to take as long as I want but I'm gonna try to get on my feet as quick as I can."
"No, take your time."
"Robin, trust me..you think that now but trust me.
You want me to do it quick."
Steve chuckles as Stevie finds the Disney aisles. "You like Disney, huh?"
"Some. Love Bambi." Stevie answers politely as she rests her head against his shoulder and yawns. "I show you gator."
She raises a little arm to show Steve the dark purple alligator she's been carrying the whole time. "He my fwiend."
"Oh he is,huh?"
"Mhm. Where mama an me lived before.. there were real ones!" her enthusiasm makes Steve laugh. "You like alligators?"
"Mhm! An fruit bats."
Steve laughs. "What about dinosaurs?"
"T rex!" she's giggling and when she holds on tighter to him, his heart melts. And the oh so familiar longing ache is back. Made worse this time by the fact that Nancy, the girl he held out hope to have it all with, she's finally moving on. Moving away, leaving Hawkins with Jonathan and while Steve is happy for her, it's killing him because he's realizing that there's a good chance that his dreams might not come true.
Nobody chooses him. Nobody ever wants to stay. He's never enough.
"Where did you live before?" he asks and she smiles. "New.." she pauses, little cheeks puffed as she thinks.
"I hafta ask my mama."
"Okay." He's laughing. "Let's go back over to her? Are you ready?"
She's giggling because he's giving her a piggyback ride. You laugh quietly and nudge Robin, nodding at him as he carries Stevie over to you on his back.
"Oh she's in love now." Robin laughs and you laugh along with her. Steve stops in front of you, letting you take your daughter off his back. And as you do so, your fingers graze against muscled shoulders and you suck in a breath. You step away, letting Stevie settle on your hip.
"We should probably go. It looks like there are people coming. " you nod to a group of teenagers approaching, some on bikes and a girl on a skateboard.
Steve nods. "Yeah. I'll uh.. I'll see you around." and without another word, he grabs his cigarettes, tells Robin he's going on a break and he's gone, vanished out the door at the back of the store. You're staring.
Robin speaks up. "He's had a really rough time lately."
As you say your goodbyes to Robin, one of the boys that comes in is calling his name, searching the store. Robin nods to the door. "Out there, dingus."
You leave with Stevie, going back to your aunt and Robin's trailer to drop off Stevie with your aunt so you can go out and look for jobs because you're determined to get settled in as quick as you can.

"Steve? Are you okay?"
Steve doesn't answer Dustin, he only shrugs. Thumps his cigarette onto the pavement. "I'm fine, kid."
"You're not."
"I am, Dustin."
"I know you're not. Just talk to me." Dustin coaxes but Steve shakes his head, refusing. "Just a long day."
"Who was Robin hugging goodbye when we came in?"
"___. Her cousin and her cousins kid, Stevie."
Dustin grimaces because suddenly, he knows exactly what's wrong with Steve right now and it has everything to do with something Steve admitted when they were all preparing to face Vecna in March.
He saw Stevie just now, got reminded of his dream. The one he's giving up on. The one Vecna used against him when he tried to take over Steve’s mind during the whole thing. The one Steve goes above and beyond not to talk about, especially lately.
"Stevie.. like in Stevie Nicks?" Dustin chuckles as he asks, glancing over at Steve.
Steve shrugs. "Didn't ask. I uh..kept my distance. Let Robin and __ talk. I walked Stevie around the store a little."
"Yeah she yelled at Max that she had a pretty skateboard." Dustin smiles. “She’s a cute kid.”
"She using the dinosaur one again?"
Dustin chuckles. "Yeah. Said the deck is fucked on her favorite one. She said Billy ordered a new one but it won't be in for like.. six weeks because it was on backorder or something.. I still can't get over Billy Hargrove not being a massive prick anymore, man." Dustin laughs and the sound dies away as he gazes at his best friend. Noting the dark circles under his eyes. The way he's quieter. Less outgoing lately, he's started to spend more time alone than he does with nearly all of them. Dustin's worried that something's really wrong with Steve because Steve isn't like this. At all. So he's trying to stick close. Eddie keeps telling him he needs to. That they all need to. Says Steve is struggling with heavy shit.
"Stevie likes dinosaurs. 'S what she told me anyway." Steve thumps the cigarette pack against his palm again. "I'll be fine, Dustin."
"You're my best friend. I'm gonna worry." Dustin responds, tapping a sneaker against the pavement.
"You don't need to. I'll be fine, Henderson. Just realizing I wasted a lot of time up to this point. Did I really think she was gonna come back one day?"
Dustin puts an arm around Steve. "You loved her, man. Hope isn't a bad thing."
Steve shrugs. "Kind of is when you put it all in one person or thing. But it's fine. If Nance can move on.." He goes quiet, laughing at himself. Dustin speaks up. "You should too…right?"
Steve shrugs. "Somethin’ like that. I'll get around to it. It’s not exactly top priority anymore."
There's nothing like facing down what you think will be your death and beating it to put life into perspective. He knew hope for his dream with Nancy Wheeler was gone when he and Eddie Munson walked out of the station following a long interrogation on zero sleep just in time to see Nancy reunite with Jonathan. The way she looked at Jonathan.. it stung. But it woke him up and now.. he's just going to close this chapter in his life.
He pulls himself off the pavement and makes his way back inside with Dustin.
,, Maybe you don't give up on your one dream.. maybe just stop trying to seek it out and see if it'll come to you." this thought is conflicted by another,   just don't bother. You're not enough. When Vecna tried to get in your head, he did have a few good points."
CONTINUED
Stevie goes bolting out the door as soon as she sees Robin get out of the passenger seat of Steve's car. After she hugs Robin at least four times, she wanders over to Steve's side and he opens the door. Stevie climbs into his car to sit and Robin laughs to herself as she watches.
The little girl is staring at the fading red scar that circles his neck and she knows she shouldn't. She knows it's rude but she's curious. And maybe she's a little afraid that whatever happened to cause it hurt her new friend. Little fingers raise and rest against the raised flesh. "Ouchy."
Steve chuckles and nods. "Yeah."
"When mama kisses my ouchies, they always get better." Stevie gazes up at Steve intently. "Mama sleep." Stevie mumbles after a few seconds.
"Yeah, Robin told me how far you two drove."
"Was fun. Mama took me t' parks. And this huge rocking chair."
"Stevie?"
"She's over here, Robin." Steve calls out to his best friend. Then he remembers the movie he rented under his account so Stevie could watch it. He reaches over into the seat and holds it out to the little girl to be rewarded by her, flinging her arms around him and thanking him. Then she holds up a stuffed t-rex to him. "You have? He protec."
"You should keep it." But she's shaking her head and she gives him this cute little frustrated look as she gestures to the neck scar he's been really self conscious about lately. "So that won't happen again. Please?"
Steve takes the t-rex and pulls himself out of the driver seat. "C'mon. I'll give you a piggyback ride to Robin, okay?"
Across the road, Max Mayfield is seeing all this and smiling to herself. "Maybe everything will be okay."

Waiting for Spiderman - (Part 1) Peter Parker x (Y/N)
Peter Parker x fem!stark!avenger!reader
Summary: Peter Parker is new to the Avengers, but that doesn't stop him from falling for Tony Stark's daughter.
Warnings: none really, just fluff
A/N: Hey guys! I know it's been a really long time since I posted, so here is a special one. I want to make this a multiple-part series, so I will make a masterlist later. Let me know if you want to be tagged. This fanfic is inspired by the song 'Waiting for Superman' by Daughtry (I changed it to Spiderman for obvious reasons). Also, Pietro never died. Enjoy ;)
"Alright, kid," Tony Stark said, looking down sternly at the boy in front of him. "This is your first training session. Don't let me down."
"O-of course not, Mr. Stark," Peter Parker stammered, looking nervously out of the window to where he could see the rest of the Avengers warming up. Captain America and Black Widow were there - he had met them last night - along with Wanda Maximoff, Sam Wilson, and others whom he couldn't make out from that distance. He fidgeted nervously. He couldn't help worrying - what would happen if he wasn't good enough? What if he lost against all of them?
"Come on, Parker!" Tony called. Peter looked up, startled. Mr. Stark had already started walking down the hall. "Coming! Coming, Mr. Stark! Sorry," he said as he breathlessly ran to catch up with his mentor.
They made their way down the compound to the training grounds, which reminded Peter very much of something out of the Hunger Games - except much more extensive. "Hey, Parker!" Steve Rogers called as they came up to them. "Hey, Cap - um, captain," Peter greeted him nervously, looking around at everyone. To his surprise, only Steve was there. The others seemed to have disappeared.
"We have teams," Tony explained, seeing the look on Peter's face. "What we do is, when we get the signal, we run through the grounds, and when we find someone from a different team, we spar with them. If they lose, we win a point and vice versa. Got that?" Peter nodded rapidly. "Um, yeah, sir, I think I got that."
"Perfect!" Tony exclaimed. "You are on a team with me, Cap, Nat, and Bucky. The other team is Thor, the Maximoff twins, Sam, and (Y/N). Ready?"
"Wait, wait," Peter said desperately. "Who is (Y/N)-?"
Before he could properly finish his sentence, an airhorn whined into the silent air. "Let's go! Good luck, kid," Tony called and pushed off the ground in his suit, flying overhead, his eyes scanning the bottom. "Wait!" Peter called as Steve took off running as well. "Oh, crap," the boy muttered under his breath and began sprinting into the training grounds, dotted with trees, bushes, and streams that made for excellent hiding places.
Suddenly, he jumped as he saw Sam Wilson - the Falcon - in his suit, flying to the ground, his eyes on the young boy who stood transfixed looking at him.
"Hey, Mr. Falcon," Peter said brightly. "'Sup, Parker. You ready for this?" The boy slapped his hand to his forehead. "Right, I forgot, you're on the other team! Alright, let's do this." With that, Peter swung himself onto a nearby tree and shot one of his web shooters at Sam, who found one of his hands attached to the tree trunk next to him. Sam immediately put his wings into action, detaching himself from the tree with some difficulty. "Ugh," Peter groaned. "I always have to remember to shoot more webs."
"You know-" he continued as he dodged the Falcon, who was soaring towards him. "Mr. Stark always warned me-" he paused as he shot another web and missed. "-always secure your opponent first!" He shot again and this time managed to get both of Sam's arms. "Kid," Sam sighed as he tried to detach himself again. "Don't you-" he managed to get one of his hands free, "-remember what I told you last time we fought?"
"That there's not this much talking when in a fight?" Peter guessed as Sam tore himself free and threw himself in the boy's direction again. "That's right," Sam affirmed. Peter panicked as Sam came closer and threw out a punch to his chest, which successfully caused the older man to get thrown back into the ground. "Oh, my gosh, are you ok?" Peter cried as he hurried to him. "Y-yeah, kid, I'm good. Come on, finish it! Throw another punch and you win."
"A-are you sure?" Peter asked. "Yeah, go ahead. You did good, Parker."
"Aw, thanks," the boy smiled and raised his fist. Before he could bring it down, however, something caught it and swung him backwards into a tree. His eyes widened as a girl his age dressed in deep blue held him against the trunk, her upper arm pressed against his chest.
"So Spidey-boy fights," she said breathlessly, smirking at him. "I'm impressed."
"Who the heck are you?" Peter asked, staring at her strangely familiar dark eyes. "Someone who just won a point for her team," she smiled and looked to her right as Pietro Maximoff slid into view, the electric blue dashes that appeared behind him whenever he used his power fading away. The girl released him and Pietro picked her up in his arms. "Don't make eyes at her, Parker," he said in his Sokovian accent. "You'll have the whole team to deal with."
The last thing Peter caught was the girl's wink and with that, Pietro had dashed off with her.
"Woah..." he whispered and stood breathless for a few moments before Tony's voice rang in his ears. "Hey! Parker! Wake up, you've got heroes to spar with!"
"Sorry, Mr. Stark! I'm on it!"
___
"That. Was. Amazing!" (Y/N) Stark exclaimed as she dashed into the changing rooms with Nat and Wanda. "I love it when Dad makes us do these training sessions."
"Yeah, but my team still won," Nat smirked as she put up her hair so she could wash her face. (Y/N) groaned. "How do you expect me to win when I'm fighting against both you and Cap? You're both like the best at sparring out of all of us!"
"Don't worry, beautiful," Nat smiled and hugged the girl. "You'll be strong enough to take on the world one day."
"Thanks, Auntie Nat," (Y/N) smiled and hugged the woman back.
Wanda cast a quick look at (Y/N) and smirked. "I thought Parker fought well."
"Peter Parker?" (Y/N) asked, changing into her favorite red shirt and shorts. "Yeah, he did pretty well. He would have defeated Sam if I hadn't stepped in."
"He lost against Thor, though," Nat countered. Wanda and (Y/N) sent her withering looks. "Everybody looses against Thor," Wanda said. Nat gave one of her looks as if to admit Wanda was right. "Why didn't Bruce join us today?" (Y/N) asked, tying her hair into a messy bun. "He's still a little shaky with his transformation. Hulk isn't exactly very eager about making an appearance," Nat explained. "Ok," (Y/N) replied, and, picking up her discarded suit, made her way to the door. "I'm going to lunch, you guys coming?"
"We're right behind you," Wanda affirmed and gave the girl a small smile. "That girl will be the death of us all," she said as the door closed. Nat smiled. "I don't know what we would do if anything happened to her," she agreed.
Meanwhile, (Y/N) had made her way to the kitchen, where Tony, Thor and Peter Parker were sitting, talking about the training. "Hey," she said brightly as she entered, and sat in the chair between Peter and Thor. "Hey, kid," Tony greeted her. "Hello, little Starkling," Thor smiled. (Y/N) smiled at them and then turned to Peter.
"So you're Spidey-boy," she smirked at him. "Um, I prefer Spiderman, actually," Peter corrected. "Right," she said and laughed. Peter smiled at the sound. He liked how her face lit up when she laughed like that.
"So you're (Y/N) Stark?" He had been surprised to learn that Tony had a daughter, but also pleased. At least there would be somebody in the compound his own age.
"Um, you did well," Peter told her. "That was really cool, how you just swooped in there and won." (Y/N) smiled. "I try to make an appearance," she said. "Congrats on the win, by the way."
"Thanks, honey," Tony smiled at her and stood. "Who is hungry? Wanda promised she'd make lunch today."
"And it'll be ready in half an hour," Wanda smiled as she entered the room. "It had better be something filling," Thor said, placing a hand on his rumbling stomach. "Training always makes me hungry."
"Everything always makes you hungry, Uncle Thor," (Y/N) said adoringly, hugging the man and getting to her feet. "Alright, if I have half an hour, I'll go up to my room for a while. See you all later?"
A chorus of 'see you laters' followed the girl up the stairs and into her room. She smiled as she sat on her bed. She liked that boy, Peter Parker. He was funny, kind, and her dad liked him well enough. It would be nice to have him in the compound. She had been out on a sleepover last night, so she had missed his arrival, but she was happy he was moving into the compound.
She reached for her phone and connected it to her Bluetooth speaker before opening Spotify and pressing shuffle on her playlist. Listening to music set her free in a way nothing ever could, and she was happy to let go every once in a while and just listen.
(Y/N) grinned as she heard the intro to her favorite song. Every time she heard it, she saw herself in the lyrics, everything that she ever wanted in the words that described the girl in the song.
She's watching the taxi driver
He pulls away
She's been
Locked in her apartment
A hundred days
The song echoed downstairs to the group of Avengers sitting in the kitchen. Wanda smiled as she stirred the pot of paprikash, listening to the young girl's voice.
"Please ignore her," Tony said to Peter. "She does that practically every day."
"Oh, come on, Stark," Thor protested. "There's nothing wrong with playing a bit of music, especially when she so enjoys it. Besides, Parker, doesn't mind, do you, Parker?" Peter gave a bashful smile. "Um, yeah, no, it's fine."
He listened to her voice singing the higher notes, and suddenly, he stood. "Where is the bathroom, Mr. Stark? I forgot," he asked, before he could stop himself. "Upstairs, next to (Y/N)'s room, kid. Don't be too long!"
Nat smirked at Peter's retreating frame. "Seriously?" she said as she saw Tony's face. "It isn't at all obvious what he wants to do?"
"What?" Tony asked, oblivious. "He wants to hear her sing," Wanda said, winking at her brother Pietro, who had arrived as soon as (Y/N) had gone upstairs.
Peter had sneaked into the bathroom. Thankfully, the song was clearly audible from where he was standing. He smiled when he listened to the lyrics, and (Y/N)'s beautiful voice singing along.
She says
Yeah, he's still coming
Just a little bit late
He got stuck at the Five and Dime
Saving the day
Peter could hear her feet tapping on the ground, and realized you were dancing.
She's talking to angels
Counting the stars
Making a wish on a passing car
She's dancing with strangers
Falling apart
Waiting for Superman to pick her up
In his arms
All of a sudden, the boy listening noticed something. (Y/N) was replacing the 'she' with 'I', singing the song in first person. He grinned as he registered the happiness and enjoyment in her voice as she vocalized, still dancing around the room.
He found himself wishing he could listen to her sing for hours. Then, suddenly, Wanda's voice drifted up the stairs to his unwilling ears. "Kids! Come and set the table please, lunch is nearly ready."
"You said half an hour," Peter muttered as he came out of the bathroom, hurrying to get downstairs before (Y/N) came out of her room. He heard the music stop, and the door open. He quickly jumped over the last few steps and practically ran to grab the forks Wanda was holding out.

Love Grows - Part 2
More teen dad Steve! This shaping up to be around 8-9 parts, so keep an eye out for more!
Ao3 | Part 1 | Part 3
March '85
Steve gets more comfortable bringing Rosemary to school. Twice a week he brings the 6 month old along as he goes to class, and when Eddie asks him about it one day, Steve just shrugs. "I used to pay for a sitter on those days, because the usual one can't watch her, but I'd rather have her with me since everyone knows anyway." And yeah, that makes sense.
Eddie starts taking her during Steve's free period, so the guy has a chance to do some schoolwork without worrying about keeping an eye on his kid. He enjoys it, the time he gets with Rosie one-on-one, but he really enjoys lunch on those days, because Steve will bring her out to Eddie's van - which Eddie scrubbed clean before offering the first time - and they'll eat lunch and talk while Rosie stretches out in the soft blankets laid out in the back.
He gets some weird looks, including the occasional piercing stare from Nancy Wheeler that he pointedly ignores, as well as his own share of whispers whenever he goes around with Rosie. He’s grateful that the years of acting out, of perfectly honing his loud, unruly persona has left him immune to the chatter. All that matters is Rosie, and Steve, and making sure they’re both taken care of.
The first time Steve asks him to watch Rosie outside school hours, he is visibly stressed. Apparently there's a big basketball game this Friday night and Steve's usual sitter is unavailable, and is there any way he could watch Rosie for a couple of hours? Please?
There's a little voice in the back of Eddie’s mind that screams about it being a Hellfire night, and a baby would be too distracting, would just get in the way. The tantrum is quickly silenced when Steve shoots him those pleading, hazel puppy eyes, and fuck, Eddie’s resolve falls like a house of cards. On Friday he finds himself taking Rosie's carrier and diaper bag as Steve rambles on a little, clearly nervous.
"I fed her like an hour ago, so she should be okay until after the game. She should stay asleep the entire time, but if she wakes up, just hold her- And you know what you're doing, I don't know why I'm going on about this."
Eddie can't help the smile that spreads over his face as he reaches out to pat Steve's shoulder. "It's fine, man. You're worried about the game and you're projecting. It'll be okay."
Steve nods and takes a breath. "Do you want me to meet you back here after the game? Or I can come to wherever you are to get her, if that's easier."
Eddie hoists the diaper bag higher on his shoulder. "I’m actually going to be hanging around for a little while. There's a room back behind the drama department, you can meet me there to pick her up."
“Yeah, I can do that,” he says, hands twisting nervously in the strap of his own bag, and Eddie leans over, nudges Steve with his elbow. “You’re gonna do great, Stevie. You’ll have to tell me all about it when you pick up Rosie.”
Steve seems to appreciate the encouragement, gives Eddie a soft “Sure thing,” as they walk into the school together, and the younger waves before they split up and head their separate ways.
Eddie's friends are baffled when they see Rosie, her carrier placed in a spare seat so he can see her easier, and yeah, Eddie gets it. They know that he watches her sometimes, have seen him around with her, but he’s never brought her into their circle before.
Gareth is the first to actually comment on it with a curious "Hey, Eddie? Why do you have Harrington's baby?"
"Because, Gareth, I'm an excellent babysitter, and my services were needed."
He sends Gareth a blinding smile and the younger rolls his eyes, opens his mouth to say something but is cut off when Andy smacks his hand on the table.
"Listen, Eddie. I know you've got your whole, whatever the fuck, going on with Harrington, but Hellfire is sacred, man! You can’t just bring in a fucking baby because King Steve asked you to!"
The room goes quiet at the outburst, and Eddie takes a breath, places his hands on the table and leans forward as he levels a look at the guy. "Steve is raising this baby by himself, and when he needed a hand he came to me because he trusts me, and I agreed because he’s my friend. If you have a problem with me helping out a friend, Andy, then you can fucking leave."
There’s a beat as Eddie stares him down, dares him to say something else before Andy looks away, and Eddie nods firmly as he relaxes a bit, satisfied that there won’t be any more objections about Rosie being there. He starts the session soon after, and the interaction slips to the back of his mind as they all focus on the game
Despite Steve's assurances, Rosie wakes up after about an hour, but before Eddie can reach over to shush her, Gareth is on his feet. He pulls her from the carrier and cradles her in his arms, and when Eddie shoots him a look he just shrugs.
"I haven't been able to do this since Maggie was a baby, let me have this, man."
Right, Eddie forgot about the fucking eleven year gap between Gareth and his little sister. The guy probably has more baby experience than Eddie and Steve combined, and that's the only reason Eddie allows it to happen, not because Gareth looks so quietly happy to be holding a baby again. He almost says something when Matt takes her a little while later, but Gareth shows him how to hold her, how to make sure she's comfortable, and Eddie settles down, keeping an eye out while still running the game.
Over the next hour, Rosie gets passed around the table. When someone's arms get tired, she goes on to the next person, although Chris pointedly passes over Andy and hands her directly to Jeff. Eddie smirks at the slight disappointment on Andy's face, and the smug delight on Jeff’s as he cradles the sleeping baby close, shushes her gently when she lets out a weak cry.
The whole scene makes Eddie proud, proud that his boys aren’t afraid to show this level of care for a child they don’t even know, that belongs to someone they have a history of disliking.
They're completely engrossed in the game when there's a knock on the door, and Eddie looks up to see Steve entering the room. He looks around and frowns, and Eddie feels a rush of - panic? resolve? - when he glances over to see Jeff still holding Rosie.
Steve makes his way over to Eddie, and the older braces himself for a rude comment, prepares to defend his flock, to the point that he’s surprised when instead, Steve says "You could have told me you already had plans for tonight, Eddie. I would have found someone else."
The weight in Eddie's stomach lifts a little, and he scoffs as he steps over to take Rosie from his friend. “It’s fine, Steve. She’s been silent as a mouse, a perfect angel, honestly.” Steve hums skeptically, watches as Eddie straps Rosie back into her carrier before handing it and the bag over.
Eddie motions to the door, follows Steve out and closes it behind them as he says "Listen, Steve, I'm sorry. I should have asked before I let anyone else hold her, but Gareth started it and he knows a lot about babies because of his sister, and then Matt took her from him before I could and-"
He cuts himself off when he sees the amused smile on Steve's face, and he gives a confused "What?"
Steve shakes his head. "I don't mind if your friends hold her, Eddie. She's pretty used to being held, and they seemed to be careful with her."
"You don't mind if everyone holds her?" Eddie asks, trying to be subtle, and Steve, beautiful, smart Steve, just smiles wider.
"You know, when I got my face beat in by Billy Hargrove last year, it's because he was being a racist asshole towards one of my kids. I wasn't gonna stand for it, so I put myself between him and Lucas. He broke a plate over my head for it." He settles the diaper bag higher on his shoulder and takes a step back. "Your friends seem nice, Eddie. Maybe you can introduce me next time?"
Steve seems to be making a habit of surprising him, and Eddie can't stop the smile that spreads across his face as he nods. "Sure thing, Stevie. Get home safe, yeah?"
"Will do. Night, Eddie," he says before walking off, and Eddie is alone in the hall when he responds with a soft "Night, sweetheart."

Thursday came in a false sense of security.
Steve woke up to the gentle sun in his face, the breeze of an open window in his hair, and his son’s chubby baby fingers wrapped around his hand.
Steve grinned sleepily at Louie and laughed when baby Louie smiled so wide back at him that his paci fell out.
Steve held Louie close while preparing a small breakfast of eggs and toast, then continued to hold him while making his bottle and setting out a few cheese puffs for him teethe on.
Steve made sure Louie ate first, helping him hold the bottle and then laughing at the pure mess he makes with the cheese puffs. Then Steve himself ate. Clean up was quick enough witch a wet rag and a speedy wipe-down.
Later on, just as Steve was thinking about preparing lunch, the front doors opened.
“Shit. Shit shit shit SHIT.” Steve angrily whispered to himself. Little Louie stared at him from where he was propped on the couch, not a thought behind his wide eyes. Though he obviously knew something was wrong with his dad.
Steve was quick to buckle Louie into his car seat, bundling him up with a blanket and giving him his bear.
“Stephan? Are you in the living room? Come grab our bags, please,” Cynthia Harrington called from down the hall.
There was no getting out of this. No way of getting Louie to the car without his parents seeing. But he’s sure they already knew of the baby, or suspected something. Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln were nosy motherfuckers set on ruining Steve’s life.
Steve sighed and looked at Louie. He knelt in front of the car seat and rubbed a hand gently on his son’s face. Louie grabbed his finger and smiled around his paci.
Steve wanted to cry.
“Stephan! Your mother called you so answer her!” Richard Harrington yelled. Steve heard the wind outside pick up aggressively and cursed the mornings sunshine.
“Coming!”
Steve padded into the hallway where his parents were taking off their jackets. Cynthia and Richard were picture-perfect— or they would’ve been. If it weren’t for the pressed line of his mother’s mouth and the hard line of his father’s jaw. Steve knew what was coming before they did.
“Stephan, the bags.” Were his mothers first words to him. Not “Hi, son, how have you been?” Not “Sorry we’ve been gone for nearly 8 months.” Not “How are you feelings after that concussion from last November? We’re terribly sorry we couldn’t stop work to simply call and make sure you were ok.”
No. None of that. Instead he was demanded around like a fucking dog.
“Um. Actually, I had to talk to you both. If you don’t mind—“
“Save it. Take the bags upstairs and meet us in the living room,” Richard stated harshly.
Steve flinched. He hated himself for flinching. But they couldn’t go in the living room. Not while Louie was still in there.
“Actually, dad— it’s very important and I just really need to talk to you guys—“
“Stephan!”
Steve winced at the pitchy tone of his mother.
“Please, I promise— It’ll be worth your time, just— just give a minute, please.” He was begging now. He hated begging.
Richard had grown tired of Steve’s fumbling for words and shoved past him. Steve knocked into the wall with the harshness.
“Stephan, you will listen to your mother and take the bags upstairs and meet us—“
“Dad, wait—“
Richard stopped in the doorway to the living room, whatever insult or command he was going to throw Steve’s way dying on his tongue.
“Stephan. Why, in the Lord’s name, is there a baby’s car seat in my living room?”
His tone was calm. Steve knew better than to think he was actually anything other than furious.
“Thats— that’s what I needed to speak to you about. Please, I—“
Steve should’ve anticipated the slap.
But he didn’t. And his head snapped to the side with the force that left him seeing stars.
Steve didn’t stay long enough to listen to his dad yelling slurs or his mom crying. He simply grabbed Louie’s car seat, picked up his shoes by the door, and left.
.
Steve had been driving for near three hours before he pulled over. He’d circled the entirety of town before finally pulling into a small dirt path by the quarry. Belatedly he realized someone was crying.
He hurried to get out of the car, rounding to the back and sliding into the backseat to sit next to Louie’s car seat. But Louie wasn’t crying, he was sound asleep.
Steve realized he was crying.
He startled when a broken sob tore itself out of his throat. He hurried out of the car and dragged himself the few yards to the edge of the quarry.
He sat down and let the rain pelt him from all angles. His face stung. Steve knew the slap would bruise phenomenally in the morning. It’d probably affect his tips at work.
He swung his feet idly on the edge, belatedly realizing he wasn’t wearing his shoes or even socks for that matter. His heels where starting to bleed from each time he rammed them into the rocks on the edge of the cliff.
Steve doesn’t know how long he sat there in the rain. He snapped back to reality when a particularly loud burst of thunder rumbled in his gut. He went back to the car.
Louie was still sound asleep. Steve figured he himself should most likely sleep as well. He didn’t know when he’d be able to get a place for them, but he’d already been saving up.
He curled up in the back seat next to baby Louie. He didn’t bother with a blanket, and he knew he’d get a cold with his clothes still being wet, but he deemed it fine.
Steve’s sleep was fitful and restless. Filled with slurs and yelling and running from monsters that shouldn’t exist.
.
It was a week before he finally got a place.
Not that long, sure. But it was a week of pure dread and exhaustion and nightmares.
The trailer he was looking at was located near the edge of Forest Hills. It was two bedroom one bathroom and had a small living room (with no ceiling light) and a kitchen (that barely had any wiggle room). But it was his.
He’d been at work when he got the call— as that was where he told the landlord to call. Mason— the line cook— called him back.
“Hey Steve-o! That landlord guys on the phone!”
Steve jumped so hard he nearly spilled the waters he was carrying.
“Be right there, Mace!”
Steve was quick to get the waters to the table 7 and take their orders for the night before he rushed back. He tossed his notepad at Mason and snatched the phone.
“Hi, Mr. Gardison!” he greeted cheerily.
“Stephen, hi. So…”
And Steve was given the trailer.
He was vibrating with excitement by the end of his call. When Steve returned the phone to its holder he was picked up from the ground in a bear hug. He laughed and hugged Mason back.
“You got the place!” Mason cheered.
“I got the place!” Steve laughed.
The rest of his day went swimmingly. He would be able to officially move into the trailer on Friday— which was fine by him. Two days of waiting was nothing.
Steve was given congratulations from a few of the regulars. Mr. Jinkins gave him a good slap on the shoulder while Miss. Gladson pulled him into a hug. They tipped him an extra 5 dollars each before they left.
At the end of his Wednesday shift, Steve gave out hugs to most of his coworkers. Mason, Allya, and his boss Michelle got hugs while George and Gwen got high fives. Steve left feeling light on his feet with a to-go bag for dinner.
Thursday was filled with the lunch rush. Steve had to take his break early to check on baby Louie in the back. He felt bad turning George’s manager office into a daycare but George assured him it was fine.
“Hey honey,” Steve’s cooed at the baby in his arms. “How are you doing, huh love? You’ve been cooped up for so long I know.”
Louie gripped his baby hands into the front of Steve’s apron. He was back in the kitchens today, Allya taking his place up front waitressing.
Steve hopped around and lightly bounced Louie against his chest, humming quietly and gently.
Louie whined and continued to cry.
“I know Louie, I know. You hungry? Hang on baby.”
Steve made sure Louie was fed and burped and laid him done for a nap. He only had an hour of his shift left.
Thursday finished off normally and Steve left with his usual dinner. He drove out to the quarry and parked before sitting in the backseat with Louie to eat.
Eventually he took Louie out of the car and sat with him on the rocky ground of the quarry. Steve held Louie close in his lap, letting the baby play with his hands and fingers and babble about nothing and everything.
Steve occasionally answered with little gums of encouragement, but for the most part he let baby Louie talk to himself. He was lost in thought, daydreaming about the trailer and how they got to move in tomorrow.
Before Steve knew it Louie had fallen asleep and he himself was on the verge. He got them both settled in the backseat once more and allowed himself to drift off.
We’re finally, maybe, getting somewhere lol. Tag list is open to everyone still, feel free to ask for a place!! We’ll get into some of Steve’s school life in the next part hopefully 🤞

“Hi, baby girl. Oh, hi sweetness” you said as you scooped your daughter up, picking her up from daycare. She used to go to work with Steve since she was a quiet baby and was a bit too small to be around so many people and so many germs but she was almost a year old now and since about 6 or 7 months old she’s been in daycare since you could afford it.
“Mama!” She said and you smiled, thanking the caretaker that brought you to her and leaving. You kissed her cheek and said “did you have a good day bub?” She babbled something and you smiled, opening the car door.
You got her settled in her car seat and “talked” with her the whole ride to starcourt. You went inside and she was super excited to see her dada, running as fast as her little legs would take her. You chuckled and scooped her up, going up the escalator.
“Mamaaa” she whined and you ran a hand through her hair. You readjusted her so she was in a better position for you to hold her and said “we’re gonna see dada in a minute Amber. You gotta be patient”
As soon as she saw the front of the Scoops Ahoy shop, she kicked her feet excitedly and giggled “dada”. You walked over and he smiled from ear to ear as soon as he saw his girls. “Dadaaa!!!” She yelled, kicking her feet a bunch.
You winced, setting her down as Steve came out from behind the counter and she ran to him. He threw her up in the air a few times, making her giggle and squeal. “Ohh, I missed this face” he said, kissing her chubby cheeks a million times.
You walked over to Robin and sighed, shaking your head. “You know there was a time where I used to be his favorite and he would be that excited to see me. Now the little creature I created has him wrapped around her little finger” you said and she chuckled.
“Yea, she does. She eat every last bit of our caramel ice cream every day cause he can’t say no to her” Robin said and you chuckled. He put her on the ground, letting her run to the back of the counters and say hi to aunt Robbie.
He walked over to you and cupped your cheeks, kissing you softly. “Hi, beautiful. How was your day?” He asked, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you to his chest. You smiled and said “it was good. Both of us missed you, but Amber was dying to see you today”
He chuckled and kissed your head, rubbing your back gently. He pulled away and kissed you one more time before you both went behind the counters, and you sat up on that counter behind the ice creams and cash register as you kept Amber entertained while Steve and Robin dealt with some customers.
He turned around as soon as he was done with some caramel ice cream for little Amber and vanilla for you. You thanked him and then made Amber babble “thank you” in hopes that eventually when she really started talking she’d learn manners quickly from hearing them so many times.
“Airplane!” He said, making that engine noise as he slowly moved the spoon towards her and she giggled, opening her mouth when it got closer. She let out a little “mmmm” as she ate it, clapping her hands.
He smiled and she whined, wanting more. Once she finished Steve wiped her hands and mouth with a baby wipe and put her on his shoulders, talking with you about each other's day as she played with his hair, his sailor hat barely hanging on her little head.
“I can’t believe you had a baby with a child” Robin said, shaking her head as you watched him run around the empty mall, jumping up on stuff and pretending she was an airplane. You chuckled and said “at least he knows exactly what she wants seeing as he has the maturity of a 1 year old too”
He put her on the Indiana Flyer and she giggled, kicking her little feet excitedly as Steve placed his hands on her little waist, making sure she didn’t fall or anything. Once the ride finished, he scooped her up and threw her up in the air, and put her back on his shoulders.
Steve pulled you in, wrapping his arm around you as you walked to the car, keeping one hand above him to keep Amber safe. Robin always sat in the back when you drove her home so she could play with Amber, whilst you and Steve joked around and talked about your days.
“Is she sleeping?” Steve asked and Robin nodded, watching her as she slept with Robins hand on her little chest, her tiny hands holding onto her fingers. He smiled and said “she was so energetic today” “I know…Ms. Bella said she didn’t nap today, I thought she would crash on the way here” you said and he chuckled.
You dropped Robin off and headed home with Steve. You woke Amber up so she could have dinner and bathe and spend time with you guys. She kept falling asleep the whole time but eventually she was in bed, passed out for the night leaving you and Steve to do whatever you wanted.
“Dinner was delicious my love” you said, he offered to make you guys dinner whilst you showered and relaxed. You wrapped your arms around his waist and he smiled, finishing up the dishes and turning around. He hugged you and kissed you softly. “I love you. You’re such a good dad to Amber, you know that?” You said and he sighed softly. He looked at the baby monitor and said “I try”
