if you are 1) currently in a university where your student healthcare covers hormone therapy, and 2) in a good financial, emotional, and social position to start hormone therapy, i would recommend pursuing it. because in my experience, it's a huge pain in the ass to get an endocrinologist once you're on your own
#unless you live near a planned parenthood or another equivalent to that#but in general you might as well take advantage of the mandatory student health insurance while you have it#it's also cheaper than you might expect. my vials cost $40 CAD for 4 months and then the injection materials are like a couple dollars each#for me i got a therapist with the university and asked them to recommend me to one of the uni's doctors#so i got to skip some of the waitlisting process yay#and then even after getting access to hormones i went to the clinic maybe 5 or 6 times because i needed a nurse to help me with injections#all of which was 'free' because it was with the university#now that i'm graduated though i need to find a new endocrinologist and it turns out the process is WAY more complicated on your own 🤡#of course your mileage may vary depending on how based your school is but it's definitely worth checking imo 🤷#beepbeep.txt#wanted to say this because i basically didn't use the uni health services until my last year and i was like 'wow#'i'm actually getting so much shit for free right now'#like i was seeing a therapist and a dietician and the endocrinologist and a nurse simultaneously at one point#and i might've missed out on all that if i didn't have someone tell me how easy it was to get help if you ask the right questions#so there's my word of wisdom for anyone who might benefit from it.......#also going to post tips about injections later because i think that would also help people out 👍

Thinking of how the Titan showed Luz the first glyph, Light, because she was kind to his son and listened to him, made him feel like his interests mattered when so many others overlooked the little guy and didn’t care about people like him. He didn’t force Luz to painstakingly find it on her own, as Philip did; The Titan freely gave this to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the second glyph, Ice, comes when Luz takes the moment to listen to the Titan; To say that she’ll learn on his terms, she’ll respect his body and work with him. Luz paid attention to the unheard son, and now the parent, speaking with and not for him as Philip did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She gets the Plant glyph afterwards by continuing to follow that principle and give his son fun and company...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the final glyph, Fire? Wing it like Witches is a major epiphany for Luz’s development, where it really hits her that she can’t drag her friends around in her attempts to play out certain beloved tropes and story beats she grew up on; In particular, this episode was about her desire to be the underdog hero, dragging Willow into relatively high-stakes consequences for a Grudgby match she did not ask for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sound familiar? I wonder if the Titan was low key afraid of Luz following in Philip’s steps, recognized that similar hero complex... Even if Luz was nowhere near as evil as Belos, well. Philip started off from somewhere, he didn’t begin as a genocidal dictator with countless sins to his name, he built his way up. Maybe the Titan is just being paranoid, Luz is so young after all! But in the end, he hid one final glyph from Philip because of his need for control, and it was admittedly Luz who jeopardized this precaution by giving Philip the Light spell.
Yet in Wing it like Witches, Luz really matures when she steps up and takes responsibility for her recklessness, for subsuming Willow’s problem and low key making it about herself, and what she decides for the group. Luz takes the full consequences of the stakes she set up so neither Willow nor Gus have to, and it’s this mature gesture of self-awareness that prompts them to reciprocate and forgive Luz.
So I wonder if THAT moment was what solidified to the Titan that yes, I really can trust this child. This human, the first after centuries of another who has been desecrating my corpse, bastardizing my name; She truly didn’t know any better, and meant well, teaching Philip the Titan’s last glyph. The first few glyphs were like little gifts, but giving Luz the last one meant she had full access to all of the Titan’s magic, so long as she experimented with glyph combos. And the Titan felt safe to entrust her with something he barred from Philip, because why?
Because Luz got over that fatal flaw of Philip’s; The desire to be the hero at any cost. That proved she wouldn’t follow in his footsteps, she diverged at a crucial point, and it meant she’d never become another Belos. They both worked and studied for the glyphs, but what mattered was the compassion that Luz had, and it was her kindness that began her discovery of glyphs. The Titan could trust his final glyph to her, Fire... But as he’d find out, it wasn’t even his final gift to Luz, either.
There really is this recurring arc of hesitancy from the Titan; Someone who was used, betrayed, and taken advantage of. And knew how easy it was for the same to happen to his son. So to see the little ways in which he opens up, recognizes Luz’s kindness and maturity and responds to each step in her growth... It’s like someone learning to trust again, realizing they’ve really found a friend after all. It’s no wonder Luz is treated like an old friend by the Titan, because she is one, and it makes his final gift and farewell to her all the more impactful.
On a lighter note! I’m just imagining the Titan figuring out how to show Luz the Fire glyph, after deciding he’ll do just that. I keep thinking of him watching Luz in the Grudgby game, cheering her on and giving Luz support by illuminating his last glyph in Boscha’s fire; “Here kid, take this!” It’s such a relatively casual and silly moment too, because the Titan isn’t obsessed with the theatrics and drama of godhood.

ੈ✩ Habits for your academic life
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below are some habits and rules to keep in mind throughout your studies and some tips that will elevate your learning experiences.
☆ Setting boundaries and learning to say no
It is always easy to say yes and join every social event that one is invited to, however its crucial to consider your own personal life and the consequences of your decisions. Hanging out with friends is a needed event as a social creature, however it's better to exercise caution and know when to say "no" to focus on your own goals and dreams. Don't get pulled into the pace of others and focus on finding a routine and schedule that works for your own benefit.
☆ Being comfortable with your own company
You will find in uni that there are lots of times that you will spend alone, and maybe feel a little anxious that you're the only person who isn't constantly in the company of someone everyday like you maybe were in high school. However, realise that even the time to yourself is a time of value, and treasure those moments to focus and work on your own goals. It is easier to get lost and lose sight of your ambitions when with others who don't have the same aspirations as yourself. Use your own time to sit down and work out what you want to achieve and quietly put in the effort to win.
☆ Never being scared to ask questions
It can be quite daunting to ask questions in lectures, so I prefer to ask my questions during times that aren't forced into a short time interval, such as tutorials, office hours, and other forms of learning support that your university/college provides. This way there is no rush to answer my questions and take my time in working through concepts and ideas. Ask questions based on your own conclusions, questions that challenge current rules and perspectives. Think deeper into your lessons and seek to make use of every bit of information.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☆ Being curious
This is very much related to the point above, that being that personal interest really aids with the brains memory retention. The more things you approach with an enthusiastic attitude, the easier it is for your brain to remember and categorise. Having curiosity, even if it is forced, gives a great advantage where you seek to interconnect the information you learn with other data, and grow more networks of neurons that allows your brain to stay healthy and active.
☆ Initiating contact
Struggling with a theory or assignment? Great, it shows that you are actively trying to understand a concept and working your brain muscles. Now the best way to comprehend or complete what you are struggling with is to access support materials. Still difficult? Reach out. Your teachers, professors, tutors are all there for your benefit. Use them intelligently and squeeze every drop of assistance and support from them while they are still available to you.
☆Watching educational content to aid your studies
You can never lose from learning a bit more every day. However make sure to fact check and find your information from trusted and quality sources. In general, it's always a win to be educated in various topics from health, sciences, arts, humanities and more to gain a better understanding of ourselves, our world, and humanity.
For example, I watched a ted talk today, and here is my conclusions from my notes:
ੈ✩TedX: Why Reading Matters by Rita Carter
Summary:
☆Your brain needs a workout as much as your body. And reading fiction seems to be one of the best workouts you can get. (I recommend quality fiction, with that being classic literature because it genuinely exercises your mind with its intricate language techniques and diverse vocabulary)
☆Not only is it good for you, but it's also good for society as a whole because the brain is like a muscle: the more you force yourself through books to take other people's perspectives, to sympathise, to empathise with other people, the more empathetic a society we will have.

Hi? It's my first requests, so if you don't mind could you please do GN!MC stingrays × octavinelle?
(I'm sorry if i have grammatical mistake)
Have a great day Author-nim ♡
Octavinelle with a Stringray Reader
author note: hiii welcome! i feel like it is going to become my mission to turn every imaginable sea creature into a reader (✯◡✯) i'm up for the challenge! this was really fun to write! also, accidental sugar daddy Azul? Accidental sugar daddy Azul <( ̄︶ ̄)>
characters: Azul Ashengrotto, Jade Leech, Floyd Leech x GN!Stringray Reader
background:
You are a stringray mer, specifically of Bluespotted Ribbontail species. You are considered quite attractive, and your small stature and timid nature only add to your allure. Despite having quite potent venom, your spinal blade does not carry over to your human form.
Tumblr media
Azul Ashengrotto
Oh you poor, sweet summer child.
The first time Azul laid eyes on you, people swear they could see thaumark signs in his eyes.
It was like someone has personally delivered prey to him.
But he was doing you a favour, you know?
With your timid and tender nature, it was only a matter of time before one of the many rogues at this school took advantage of you.
But luckily for you, he can offer you protection. Just sign here and... Perfect. That was easy, wasn't it?
And that is how you began working as a server at the Mostro Lounge, in exchange for Azul's 'protection'.
You quickly became the most popular server at the Lounge, your attractive appearance and nervous, stuttery service becoming a hit with the clientele. Poor little thing, you tug just right on their heartstrings.
Azul was surprised. Whilst he was expecting you to have some popularity (exactly the reason he preyed on you in the first place), he wasn't expecting you to blow up like this.
But he isn't complaining! Celebrating, in fact. Sales have never been better, and seasonal specials have been selling out faster than normal since you joined his staff.
Anyone who goes in the VIP room after hours will see a huge grin on Azul's face as he pours over the business ledgers.
Its because of this that Azul starts to spoil you.
It starts small at first, an extra 15 minute break here and there, a side you hadn't asked for slipped on to your employee meal.
Soon enough, you are granted exclusive access to the VIP room, a perk that was only afforded to the twins up until now.
Oh and what a coincidence, you'll find a study guide for that class you are struggling with on the VIP room table as you take your break. It must have been left out after a client meeting... No harm in you thumbing through it whilst you take your break, Azul would coo.
Azul tries to be discreet, especially once the twins cotton on to your special treatment, with Jade flashing a sharp toothed eerie grin and Floyd complaining that he too wants free study guides.
Azul could justify it, of course, with that you are their best server, in order to maximise the hours you could work, he needed to ensure no other aspect of your life got in the way.
He was definitely justifying it more to himself than he was the twins.
So come, dear. Let him show you your new special uniform for the lunar new year seasonal service...
Tumblr media
Jade Leech
You make work so much more fun for him.
Watching you quiver and almost drop a glass when he creeps up behind you and places a hand on your shoulder is just precious.
"Oya, oya. Those glasses are quite delicate. Do be careful."
However, despite the fact that he slyly bullies you for fun, he is a very good manager.
He will always ensure you take your break on time, and that your employee meal is ordered far enough in advance that it is ready for you as soon as you sit down on your break.
And should any particularly rowdy clientele decide to bother you...
Then he will ensure they are dealt with <3
It is his favourite part of the night, after all. How he adores it when you hide behind him.
Jade ropes you into his sneaky work agendas too.
For example, he'll coach you into pushing the mushroom dishes to customers so that he can stop Azul from taking them off the menu.
Probably the least sinister smiles you've received from him are when he beams at you when you deliver a bunch of mushroom dish orders to the kitchen.
Jade will stand with the most innocent smile as Azul looks on in confusion through the order ledger and the sudden influx of mushroom cuisine orders, with you hidden behind Jade.
Azul: "Why are they tucked behind you like that?"
Jade: "They're tired. :) "
Considering the nature of your 'deal' with Azul, Jade's protection of you extends outside of the Lounge into your school life.
But that doesn't mean it is convenient, even if it is effective.
He terrifies you just as much as the people around you, after all.
However it has its perks.
The lunch line is infinitely easier when you have a 190cm eel ensuring that you don't get caught in the lunch crush.
He likes to tell you over lunch how his favourite food is octopus when Azul is sitting right there.
He'll then remark, with the most unassuming of smiles, how he hasn't tried stingray yet.
Funnily enough, you don't feel so hungry anymore.
Tumblr media
Floyd Leech
Oh dear.
This man terrorises you.
You're just so cute to him! Especially when you tremble and tear up when he spooks you.
He just wants to tuck you under his arm and keep you <3
Floyd is constantly on your heels when you are working. Whether he is spooking you or draping himself over you, he's always somehow impeding your work.
Azul is constantly scolding Floyd and tries his best to keep you separated, so that Floyd's behaviour does not bother you. Or effect profits.
Jade just looks on in amusement.
Despite the above, your relationship with Floyd isn't all bad.
You and Floyd take your breaks together, simply because he stops working when you do and throws himself over your lap when you sit down to rest.
He's fairly calmer then, passing the time by showing you pictures of clothes he is thinking of buying and asking your opinion on them.
You caused a few mood swings at first when you didn't give a good enough response, but after awhile you got comfortable enough to give him your honest opinion. That makes him happy!
He also shows you his basketball videos, even if most of them are just Ace getting taken out by one of his basketball throws.
He's definitely roped you in to going to practice with him one time. He thinks it would be funny watching you struggle to make the hoop.
Floyd is also the cause of one of your most terrifying incidents at NRC.
On one of your rare days off, you were taking a swim in the Octavinelle pool to relax and reacquaint yourself with the water, and Floyd snuck up on you and scared you.
And well...
You almost skewered him with your spinal blade.
You narrowly missed stabbing him right in the stomach. Even Floyd was shocked but the suddenness of it.
... Until the giddiest grin spread across his face and he started cackling.
You, on the other hand, started bawling your eyes out.
Floyd ended up carrying you to the Lounge because you wouldn't stop crying.
He sat you on a barstool whilst Jade prepared you a drink and Floyd went into the kitchen to steal you some ice cream.
Floyd then gushed to Jade about how cool you were when you almost stabbed him with your tail blade and how sharp it looked.
He looks freakishly delighted when he remarks that maybe next time you'll actually get him.
If you did, he'd probably wear it as a badge of honour and show it off to everyone shamelessly.
Meanwhile, Azul comes to check what all the noise is and pretends to be upset that the twins are giving out free refreshment, like he doesn't do that himself.

4 Ways To Cure Writer’s Block
Tumblr media
Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. NovelPad, a 2023 NaNoWriMo sponsor, is a novel drafting software designed to make it easy for writers to write. Today, they're sharing a few tips to help you beat writer's block:
NovelPad loves NaNoWriMo because we have the same goal: Helping authors get the thing done!
Starting a book is usually fun and easy—your fingers dance across the keyboard as you explore an exciting world, meet your characters, and stir up intrigue for the coming plot. But once you get into the weeds of how that all works, and how you and your characters get from Point A to Point B, you might find yourself losing momentum. You might find yourself so encumbered with obstacles that you might get a case of the dreaded writer’s block.
The very good news is that writer’s block isn’t terminal, and I certainly don’t think writer’s block is as enigmatic as some people seem to think. I believe it’s actually quite a simple problem, and usually due to one of a few common factors. Let’s look at four ways you can push yourself through your case of ye olde block.
1. Check in with yourself.
Step one is always to check in with yourself.
Start by reviewing your basic self-care needs:
Are you staying hydrated?
Do you feel hungry?
Would a shower or a nap be beneficial?
Is it time for a walk or some stretching exercises?
Consider your environment as well. Maybe you need:
Noise-canceling headphones
A change of scenery
A babysitter or someone to help around the house
To open or close some windows
Next, evaluate your level of focus. Is your mind wandering elsewhere? It can be useful to create a "dump list" to jot down anything that's causing you stress, such as work-related issues, pending tasks, or upcoming events. Setting that list aside can give you the tangible feeling of pushing those things off your desk to worry about later.
Once your body, mind, and environment are sorted out, you'll likely discover that writing becomes a bit easier!
2. Look back at where you’ve been.
Even if the first tip did or did not do the trick, let’s take a look at the project itself.
Sometimes writer’s block is a blessing in disguise! Your creative gut might be telling you that something went awry. Try reading your project back and pinpointing where it became difficult to keep going. Consider alternate plots or paths to get your writing flowing again.
If you're managing multiple plots and subplots, identifying the moment you deviated from the main path can be quite challenging. To pinpoint which plot line is causing issues, you can take advantage of NovelPad's handy feature: Plot tracking.
Tumblr media
On the Plot Board, you can review every scene of a particular plot in order, making spotting those errors in your plotlines much easier.
3. Rewrite a problem scene.
Once you've identified the scene causing issues, it's time to make improvements! This can be challenging because there are countless ways to approach a scene.
However, don't hesitate to embrace revisions. Often, a scene benefits from a thorough rewrite. With NovelPad Revisions, you can save limitless scene revisions, compare them side by side, and effortlessly switch to the one they want in the live manuscript. This keeps your different versions safe, well-organized, and readily accessible.
Tumblr media
4. Freewrite to free yourself.
Freewriting is a great way to get your creativity flowing again. Write some poetry, compose a letter to a friend, or simply let your thoughts flow without judgment. Freewriting without judgment can help turn on your writer mode and even help you solve some problems! It's especially beneficial when you're stuck on something specific, because we often find brilliant solutions when we stop being so critical of our ideas.
Kick writer’s block off your desk with NovelPad! It's free to use throughout NaNoWriMo, and we offer discounts to participants and winners afterward. If you find that NovelPad isn't your cup of tea by the end of November, don't worry—you can still access and download your project at any time. Just write!
Our team at NovelPad believes in making it easy for writers to complete their books. That’s why we built an uncomplicated, intuitive system that stays out of the way until you need it! We want writers like you to #JustWrite without burdening you with excessive features. Speaking of features, software updates at NovelPad are based entirely on user feedback from authors to keep our features sharp, relevant, and minimalist.
All NaNoWriMo participants have access to a 15% discount on NovelPad with code WRIMO2023 — use the code during checkout to redeem your discount. Offer expires April 1, 2024.

Orange Peel Theory
Ghost x Reader fic
“Give the damn thing to me, Lt. Thought you wanted an orange, not orange juice.” He glared back at you, an action most people would have stopped in their tracks from seeing. Instead, you plucked the fruit from his hands, easily sliding your thumbs into the hole he had made and peeling back the skin. He huffed at how easily you’d peeled it, fingers deft and graceful compared to his own.
“There,” you said with a smirk, holding out the fruit. “Now I don’t have to watch you fumble.” He scoffed, moving to grab it from you. You managed to steal a segment of orange, popping it into your mouth with a grin before moving away. He stared at your retreating form, the sting of citrus in cuts on his fingers oddly similar to the sting in his chest.
It was odd how you were always there to offer help with such mundane things. You were simply the FNG when that had happened, a bright force among such dire circumstances. A sergeant who, despite seeing more than enough acts of war and sacrifice, had managed to hold on to what humanity you had left.
Humanity that came as small actions no one expected or demanded, ones you just took to because you could. At first, Ghost found it annoying; always offering help, always checking in on him, always stepping in with his duties to try and make them go faster so he could rest earlier. It infuriated him. He’d never do things like that, it opened up way too many opportunities to be taken advantage of.
At least, that’s what he told himself.
A light rap on his door. Hesitant, shy.
“Lt?”
He sighed, getting up from his bunk and trudging over to the door. Irritability shifted under his skin, like he wore too many layers and they were bunched up under each other, not moving no matter how much he tossed and turned and pulled at them.
He swung the door open, a huffed, “What?” leaving him. He froze nearly instantly, seeing your face look back at him.
Dark undereyes, red capillaries pulling at the corners of dull white sclera like a mirror. An exhausted, yet worried pinch ghosting your features.
“Sergeant,” he started slowly, frozen in place. The irritability swelled, but he couldn’t find it in himself to take it out on you. “What do you need?”
A glance sideways, a shaky breath poorly concealed. Regretable, shameful.
“I’m sorry for waking you,” you mutter. “Just- just can’t seem to settle. Soap’s out field, of course, and Gaz is working with Price on recon-”
“Inside,” he said gruffly, leaving you at the threshold. He stopped halfway to his bunk before turning, looking at your surprised form with a raised brow. “Move your feet, sergeant.”
Eventually, it all evolved into a back and forth game. You’d find little things to do for him, little ways to make his day better. You’d visit his office during your rounds, picking up piles of paperwork or files he was about to deliver to someone else in the base, somehow always tricking him into telling you who they were intended for.
You’d find little bits and pieces he’d misplaced and put them somewhere he knew to look, smiling to yourself when you heard him huff in mild irritation when he eventually found something somewhere he’d ‘fucking looked before’.
You’d bring him a tea, or a snack when he had spent entirely too long in his room or hunched over paperwork.
You’d fill his water bottle when he was training in the gym.
You’d peel his oranges.
You never noticed how he’d lead on your conversations, watching your cheeky smile as he gave you the name of the intended recipients of his work.
You never noticed how loud your smile was, even if you weren’t facing him in the same room.
You never notice how sometimes he’d purposely avoided being seen by you outside his office so that you’d assume he had been there all day and bring him treats.
You never noticed how he left his water bottle out for easy access.
You never noticed how Soap or Gaz would throw him a confused or knowing look when he grabbed yet another orange, days in a row when he didn’t even really like them that much.
It soon divulged into a game of hide-and-seek tag, really. You’d always do something for him, something small, and he’d always do so in return. He was a lot sneakier about it, managing to turn a lot of your own tricks back on you and never being caught.
“I know what you’re doing.”
He looked up, his face neutral as the pen in his hand stilled. He raised a brow. “And just what am I doing, sergeant?”
A small huff, a cross of your arms. Defiant, playful.
“You’re taking my stuff just so you can say you found it when you return it,” you accuse.
He doesn’t know how he managed to keep a smile off of his face, even if his mask was able to hide it somewhat. He doesn’t know how his voice remains even, either, as he turns to you properly with a long sigh. “Why would I do that?”
“Well-” you splutter, suddenly falling short for a moment. “I wouldn’t know. Seems like you’re going soft.”
“Soft?”
“Yes.”
“In what way?”
Another silence. This time, he can’t keep a smirk from tugging at his lips, his eyes sparkling with mirth. He waited for your response, watching as you shifted uncomfortably. For an amazing and competent soldier out field, you sure were pretty awful at concealing your thoughts and feelings around him.
A shake in your resolve, a sideways glance. Flustered, cute.
Cute?
He couldn’t help but think of all the things you’d done for him over time. At some point, it had become the norm for you and him; helping each other out in tiny ways while never acknowledging them. Small boosts of morale and easiness provided that was eagerly accepted.
Like when he helped you get back to sleep after a particularly restless night filled with waking night terrors and the silent tears that he had learnt to not mention, rather swiping them away without another word. Like when either of you were sure you wouldn’t make it another day, either one of your heads resting on the other’s chest.
There were times where you would text him, his contact given to you purely for basic communication or emergency that quickly descended into the occasional conversation.
03/9/20-- 11:47 Heard you got caught in cross fire. What, bullets don’t phase through ghosts? I’m the one with the jokes love, not you Quit your bitching, old man You picking on the injured now, huh? New low And here I was about to offer to bring you some real food, not hospital food. But I guess I have a new reputation to uphold Not a reputation if only one person knows about it. I can keep secrets I’ll be there in 10 minutes Thanks, love
04/11/20-- 05:23 You up? No Yeah, good one. Slick Glad you think so, sarge. What do you need? Need a fucking coffee, wanted to know if you wanted a tea Are there sticks in the woods? Dunno, would have thought one was up your arse with your sunny attitude yesterday. Milk and sugar, like usual? Yes please
29/11/20-- 18:03 I’m glad you’re going home this time Why, need a break from me? Now that you mention it… But no, just think you deserve some actual time off instead of lurking around here like you always do I lurk. Yes, you lurk. You take your call sign too seriously sometimes I’ll keep that in mind
29/11/20-- 18:07 Did I do something wrong?
He struggled being away from you, he found. He hadn’t realised how much he enjoyed being around you, how much he took the little game for granted. Now, when he lost something, he found himself wishing you were there with him until his keys magically appeared. He missed waiting for the small knock on his door as you walked in with cups in your hands, maybe a paper bag with a muffin or such.
He hadn’t eaten an orange since he went on leave for the holidays.
24/12/20-- 22:58 Happy holidays, Sarge I should have said it earlier, but todays been hectic Not that you really care anymore
24/12/20-- 23:01 I wanted to invite you over for a drink or two, maybe a nice dinner, but thought it would be better for you to spend it with your family Why didn’t you tell me you didn’t have family? I would have spent my holiday with you if you asked I should have asked
24/12/20-- 23:17 I’m sorry
24/12/20-- 23:23 I miss you
24/12/20-- 23:39 What a day to lose your humanity I would have helped you
25/12/20-- 00:01 Merry Christmas, love I miss you I love you, too A Christmas miracle, I guess
Thumbs plunge into tough skin, ripping and tearing. Yet, nothing leaks from the cavity. No, it comes away easily.
A chuckle, the burn of citrus in cuts on his fingers and in his chest. Ire, melancholy.
25/12/20-- 00:06 A Christmas miracle I peeled my own orange

So if I'm saying not all adult-minor interactions are inherently creepy, and in fact the vast majority of them are genuinely platonic, then what should you look for to decide if something is creepy?
"Why would an adult talk to a minor?" is not a slam dunk. You have friends, family, teachers, coaches, mentors, librarians, acquaintances, people who have the opportunity to enrich your life.
But people who want to take advantage of the specific qualities of youth are very real. Many of them are good at hiding it, though not all. Most teens can think of someone overtly creepy--that guy you know because he works at the local Dairy Queen and always gives your friend extra ice cream and has a sword collection. (Real life example, don't come for me.) And you NEED to be cautious around that level of creep. Don't be alone with them, don't let them give you a ride anywhere, don't give them your contact info if you can possibly help it, tell other people in your life that they creep you out. But some of them are a lot less obvious.
Abusers tend to seek out positions where they will have access to minors. Sometimes that's professional--teachers, coaches. Sometimes it's social--church group leaders, Scout troop leaders, or just hanging out with a group of teens despite being older than all of them. If you have a group of 16-17 year old friends and a guy old enough to buy liquor is hanging out with you, it's not because you're all so mature. It's because he's immature. He doesn't know how to have positive, healthy relationships and friendships with people his age. So he's looking for people who have less emotional maturity who hopefully won't notice his deficits.
And when you're a teenager, it's easy to miss that. I missed it! When I was 17 I started dating a guy who was 25. I thought we had this beautiful, star-crossed love. Except, looking back, he was a tier 1 loser. He didn't have anything going for him. He wasn't trying to grow as a person or learn or get better. He was wallowing in his untreated depression and substance use, and fucking a 17-year-old made him briefly feel better about himself. That was not love. It couldn't be. We were at points in our lives that should have been wildly different. We didn't have anything real in common, just sex--because I was, at 17, horny, which is normal and okay! But exploring that with HIM? Big mistake.
"Why would an adult form a romantic relationship with a minor?" Because they're looking for someone they can manipulate into getting everything they want and give nothing back.
The rule of 7 isn't perfect, but it's a decent rule of thumb: take your age, divide by 2, and add 7. That's the youngest you can date without being definitely pretty creepy. So at 40, I could potentially date a 27 year old--but I gotta tell you, even the people I know in their early 30s seem pretty young to me! So your mileage may vary. But if you're 13 and a 20 year old is trying to romance you, get the fuck out of there and tell a trusted adult.

The Framework is the most exciting laptop I've ever broken
Tumblr media
From the moment I started using computers, I wanted to help other people use them. I was everyone’s tech support for years, which prepared me for the decade or so when I was a CIO-for-hire. In the early days of the internet, I spent endless hours helping my BBS friends find their way onto the net.
Helping other people use technology requires humility: you have to want to help them realize their goals, which may be totally unlike your own. You have to listen carefully and take care not to make assumptions about how they “should” use tech. You may be a tech expert, but they are experts on themselves.
This is a balancing act, because it’s possible to be too deferential to someone else’s needs. As much as other people know about how they want technology to work, if you’re their guide, you have to help them understand how technology will fail.
For example, using the same memorable, short password for all your services works well, but it fails horribly. When one of those passwords leak, identity thieves can take over all of your friend’s accounts. They may think, “Oh, no one would bother with my account, I’ve got nothing of value,” so you have to help them understand how opportunistic attacks work.
Yes, they might never be individually targeted, but they might be targeted collectively, say, to have their social media accounts hijacked to spread malware to their contacts.
Paying attention to how things work without thinking about how they fail is a recipe for disaster. It’s the reasoning that has people plow their savings into speculative assets that are going up and up, without any theory of when that bubble might pop and leave them ruined.
It’s hard to learn about failure without experiencing it, so those of us who have lived through failures have a duty to help the people we care about understand those calamities without living through them themselves.
That’s why, for two decades, I’ve always bought my hardware with an eye to how it fails every bit as much as how it works. Back when I was a Mac user — and supporting hundreds of other Mac users — I bought two Powerbooks at a time.
I knew from hard experience that Applecare service depots were completely unpredictable and that once you mailed off your computer for service, it might disappear into the organization’s bowels for weeks or even (in one memorable case), months.
I knew that I would eventually break my laptop, and so I kept a second one in sync with it through regular system-to-system transfers. When my primary system died, I’d wipe it (if I could!) and return it to Apple and switch to the backup and hope the main system came back to me before I broke the backup system.
This wasn’t just expensive — it was very technologically challenging. The proliferation of DRM and other “anti-piracy” measures on the Mac increasingly caused key processes to fail if you simply copied a dead system’s drive into a good one.
Then, in 2006, I switched operating systems to Ubuntu, a user-centric, easy-to-use flavor of GNU/Linux. Ubuntu was originally developed with the idea that its users would include Sub-Saharan African classrooms, where network access was spotty and where technical experts might be far from users.
To fulfill this design requirement, the Ubuntu team focused themselves on working well, but also failing gracefully, with the idea that users might have to troubleshoot their own technological problems.
One advantage of Ubuntu: it would run on lots of different hardware, including IBM’s Thinkpads. The Thinkpads were legendarily rugged, but even more importantly, Thinkpad owners could opt into a far more reliable service regime that Applecare.
For about $150/year, IBM offered a next-day, on-site, worldwide hardware replacement warranty. That meant that if your laptop broke, IBM would dispatch a technician with parts to wherever you were, anywhere in the world, and fix your computer, within a day or so.
This was a remnant of the IBM Global Services business, created to supply tech support to people who bought million-dollar mainframes, and laptop users could ride on its coattails. It worked beautifully — I’ll never forget the day an IBM technician showed up at my Mumbai hotel while I was there researching a novel and fixed my laptop on the hotel-room desk.
This service was made possible in part by the Thinkpad’s hardware design. Unlike the Powerbook, Thinkpads were easy to take apart. Early on in my Thinkpad years, I realized I could save a lot of money by buying my own hard-drives and RAM separately and installing them myself, which took one screwdriver and about five minutes.
The keyboards were also beautifully simple to replace, which was great because I’m a thumpy typist and I would inevitably wear out at least one keyboard. The first Thinkpad keyboard swap I did took less than a minute, and I performed it one-handed, while holding my infant daughter in my other hand, and didn’t even need to read the documentation!
But then IBM sold the business to Lenovo and it started to go downhill. Keyboard replacements got harder, the hardware itself became far less reliable, and they started to move proprietary blobs onto their motherboards that made installing Ubuntu into a major technical challenge.
Then, in 2021, I heard about a new kind of computer: the Framework, which was designed to be maintained by its users, even if they weren’t very technical.
https://frame.work/
The Framework was small and light — about the same size as a Macbook — and very powerful, but you could field-strip it in 15 minutes with a single screwdriver, which shipped with the laptop.
I pre-ordered a Framework as soon as I heard about it, and got mine as part of the first batch of systems. I ordered mine as a kit — disassembled, requiring that I install the drive, RAM and wifi card, as well as the amazing, snap-fit modular expansion ports. It was a breeze to set up, even if I did struggle a little with the wifi card antenna connectors (they subsequently posted a video that made this step a lot easier):
https://twitter.com/frameworkputer/status/1433320060429373440
The Framework works beautifully, but it fails even better. Not long after I got my Framework, I had a hip replacement; as if in sympathy, my Framework’s hinges also needed replacing (a hazard of buying the first batch of a new system is that you get to help the manufacturer spot problems in their parts).
My Framework “failed” — it needed a new hinge — but it failed so well. Framework shipped me a new part, and I swapped my computer’s hinges, one day after my hip replacement. I couldn’t sit up more than 40 degrees, I was high af on painkillers, and I managed the swap in under 15 minutes. That’s graceful failure.
https://guides.frame.work/Guide/Hinge+Replacement+Guide/104
After a few weeks’ use, I was convinced. I published my review, calling the Framework “the most exciting laptop I’ve ever used.”
https://pluralistic.net/2021/09/21/monica-byrne/#think-different
That was more than a year ago. In the intervening time, I’ve got to discover just how much punishment my Framework can take (I’ve been back out on the road with various book publicity events and speaking engagements) and also where its limits are. I’ve replaced the screen and the keyboard, and I’ve even upgraded the processor:
https://guides.frame.work/Guide/Mainboard+Replacement+Guide/79
I’m loving this computer so. damn. much. But as of this morning, I love it even more. On Thursday, I was in Edinburgh for the UK launch of “Chokepoint Capitalism,” my latest book, which I co-authored with Rebecca Giblin.
As I was getting out of a cab for a launch-day podcast appearance, I dropped my Framework from a height of five feet, right onto the pavement. I had been working on the laptop right until the moment the cab arrived because touring is nuts. I’ve got about 150% more commitments than I normally do, and I basically start working every day at 5AM and keep going until I drop at midnight, every single day.
As rugged as my Framework is, that drop did for it. It got an ugly dent in the input cover assembly and — far, far worse — I cracked my screen. The whole left third of my screen was black, and the rest of it was crazed with artefacts and lines.
This is a catastrophe. I don’t have any time for downtime. Just today, I’ve got two columns due, a conference appearance and a radio interview, which all require my laptop. I got in touch with Framework and explained my dire straits and they helpfully expedited shipping of a new $179 screen.
Yesterday, my laptop screen stopped working altogether. I was in Oxford all day, and finished my last book event at about 9PM. I got back to my hotel in London at 11:30, and my display was waiting for me at the front desk. I staggered bleary-eyed to my room, sat down at the desk, and, in about fifteen minutes flat, I swapped out the old screen and put in the new one.
https://guides.frame.work/Guide/Display+Replacement+Guide/86
That is a fucking astoundingly graceful failure mode.
Entropy is an unavoidable fact of life. “Just don’t drop your laptop” is great advice, but it’s easier said than done, especially when you’re racing from one commitment to the next without a spare moment in between.
Framework has designed a small, powerful, lightweight machine — it works well. But they’ve also designs a computer that, when you drop it, you can fix yourself. That attention to graceful failure saved my ass.
If you hear me today on CBC Sunday Magazine, or tune into my Aaron Swartz Day talk, or read my columns at Medium and Locus, that’s all down to this graceful failure mode. Framework’s computers aren’t just the most exciting laptops I’ve ever used — they’re the most exciting laptops I’ve ever broken.

I work in accounting in Canada and over the years I have realized just how many people aren’t aware of all the various government programs they can take advantage of so I was hoping you could post this on the chance someone who it could help sees it. The main one I see people missing out on is the disability tax credit. If you live in Canada and are disabled you may qualify for the disability tax credit. It’s a non refundable tax credit that’s relatively easy to apply for. All you need to do is get form t2201 from Canada.ca and fill out the first portion with your information then you take it to your doctors office and get them to fill out the remainder. Depending on your provinces medical coverage they might charge you a form fee. Once it’s filled out you can either mail it to the address Canada.ca tells you to or you can submit it online through MyCRA if you’ve set up access to it. If you have an accountant do your taxes for you they might be authorized to submit the form for you once it has been filled out by a medical professional. Processing time for the application is 8 weeks. They’ll mail you a letter letting you know if you qualify or not. It’s also available to people with temporary disabilities or illnesses depending on the disability. And if you do qualify that means you can open a registered disability savings plan. I think it’s similar to an IRA but I don’t actually know what an IRA is cause I’m Canadian lol. The registered disability savings plan is an account where you can put money to save for retirement. It’s different from a registered retirement savings plan because with an RDSP the government will give you grants and match your contributions up to a certain amount each year based on income. There are rules about how much you can take out of the account and when you can take it out but if you take the letter from the CRA saying you qualify for the disability tax credit to your bank they’ll help you set up the account and explain all the rules and everything else. Here ends my speech about federal disability benefits. Go forth and take the federal government for everything it’s worth my fellow disabled bitches.
You are doing the lord's work, my dove. Thank you so much for sharing with the whole class. Canadian bitchlings, take note of the above! Especially if you're a person with disabilities!

signature spells and the person
(referencing this list because i cant remember them all)
spoilers for all books. and glorious masquerade
(note that some characters i dont know well at all. which you can kind of tell with me being super unsure. there's this person in the reblogs who elaborated on bits i wasn't quite correct on or didnt have an idea on so go read it!)
signature spells embodying the person sort of? Riddle - collar. restriction. limitations.
Deuce - not taking hits lying down. striking back. (a reckless idiot like that)
Cater - hm.. putting on an act for everyone? people pleaser? so its like. all of those little 'acts' and 'personas' he puts on are sort of 'him' in a sense. but its also not him at the same time. (like how the clones arent actually him because they're just a creation of his magic. but they are him in a way, too right?)
trey - sneaky sneaky guy who notices a lot more than you'd think. presents himself as one way but he's complicated
Leona - sand. like all his hard work turning to sand, or basically nothing.
Jack - wolves work in packs, right? he wants to work in a pack. (even though he says he doesn't). they're strong, but they do better together. ..probably. idk.
Ruggie - treating all people 'equally' (in the sense that he'd mess with them all. unless they were a serious trouble to deal with) also sucks up to people........ (and probably laughing at them behind their back for being such a 'fool' haha get it. because fool's parade..--) maybe? Idk.
Azul - exchanging his old self for an asshole basically (because he must've been a nicer guy as a bby. but then ppl were mean to him and now he's very bitter.)
Jade - acting like the more calmer and reasonable of the twins, even though he can be just like floyd, if a bit more dangerous considering he can get under your skin, get you trust him, that he just wants to 'help you'. and you tell him all your secrets. and then it 'shocks your heart' when he reveals his true colors. (like bruh. his halloween groovification message was literally, "Oooh, I love it when you flee in terror. It makes me want to chase you!")
Floyd - i don't know. uhhh. in his lab coat(?) vignette there's this moment where a guy bumps into him, is like 'hEY WHO DO YOU--' and then realizes its floyd and backs off. basically the guy who intimidates them to make them weaker, ig? terrorizing them. 'binding the heart' in fear. i mean he'll still hurt them ofc, but the point is is that he's the scary one, jade's the 'calm' one, thats his image to people. i dont know him nearly well enough to really get it.
Kalim - wishing for everyone to be happy. to dance and sing and forget about all the troubles. throwing parties and feasts to cheer them up (and granting them relief when needed). although it doesn't always end well and his attempts can end up 'useless', like how oasis maker is 'useless' when people already have easy access to water. but at other points desperately needed.
Jamil - turning him into the 'master' and the other the 'servant'
Vil - planting 'curses' in plain sight. masking it. disguising it. acting. like putting on makeup to change something. maybe. possibly. (this is weak) maybe a false reassurance. a mask.
Epel - accepting who he is (that he's short and seen as 'cute'. and so using it to his advantage.) like, seeming 'soft and dainty' but actually a guy who can beat someone up. like, 'you'll just go to sleep..' (and then the crimson part of slumber with a negative meaning. the poison apple. something that looks innocent but is actually harmful.) and then you never wake up again because you were TRICKED HAHAHA /hj
Rook - will literally do anything for what his fixations are. in which his fixations are 'beauty', which is a very vague category and include literally everything. also very very creepy and stalker-ish in the process.
Idia - honestly idfk. uh. 'responsibility'. burdens. control. it literally just represents a part of his job? idfk. its such a big part of him (also his family had the same UM so like..) that its just. who he is.
Malleus - there was this quote he said about how 'when you nap, even 500 years could pass without you noticing'. so it could be something like how time moves by so fast like that
guh.. it was "Give in to slumber, and a thousand years will pass in the blink of an eye."
Silver - I don't know him that well... i mean like there's references to him having parallels with like. i think.. aurora?? the girl who maleficent cursed. i think. dreams and wishes. i don't know i havent even seen him use it yet LMFAO (ive only finished part 2 of book 7..) maybe like. things not seeming real..? idk man. a desire to see people, to stay by their side, but can't, so instead it'll be in a dream. so either it isn't real, a mere fantasy, or, shrug. like. yknow the remember me song in coco? it's like 'and everytime you hear a guitar you'll remember and think about me' (i cant remember the exact lyrics)
Sebek - admires malleus. a lot. malleus has control over lightning or something. so sebek in turn becomes that 'lightning' that he can control, as his guard and stuff like that. 'i will be his sword', maybe.
lilia - he reflects a lot about the past imo. overly aware of things and the passing of time. at least in my opinion. how things can pass by so easily. so he takes little bits and pieces to cherish for the rest of his life, and to think back on. a trip back down memory lane, as they say.
Rollo - literally gets set on fire like his brother..?? that thing forever haunting him that its such a big part of him at this point (hating magic and hating what happened.) and him hating himself making himself see him as part of the reason why his brother died, and therefore making him literally the thing that killed him sort of?

Nu carnival boys find out you're a demigod ♦️(Morvay)
Yakumo
You tell him you're a demigod and his first question is if you can help with his grandparents' harvest. His second question is how you handle having power and if you can give him any tips so he's less scared of his power. He feels safe with you and he loves you so much, but he'd love you the same even if you were mortal. He feels closer to you after you tell him and that makes him very happy.
Edmond
He doesn't believe you. Even if you have a great power he is convinced it's magic or something like a Yokai and not something godly. He'll be upset if you misuse your power or “status” in any way, but for the most part he only cares about how you treat him and others. If you use your power to help people that's the fastest way to his heart.
Olivine
Guilt, confusion, blasphemy. He's feeling a lot of emotions right now and honestly is doing a good job handling it considering his very devout religious views. Is dating you idolization? Has he been sinning by being with you? Well, sinning in more than just the physical sense. He cares about you but will need some time to repent and think about the situation. In the end he still loves you and is sure the God of Klein will forgive him. He will be uncomfortable with you using your powers around him though, unless it's to help someone.
Quincy
This changes nothing. God, human, demon, or something else entirely; it doesn't matter what you are once he likes you. If your demigod heritage gives you longevity he will actually be ecstatic though. He's so tired of out living everyone he cares about so if you actually be able to stay in his life that would make him so happy. He long ago lost the dream of growing old with someone, but if you'll let him, he will gladly spend the ages with you.
Kuya
Oh no. Do NOT give him access to any of your power! He is strong enough without the power of a demigod at his beck and call. He's happy that your demigod status makes you more durable and more “fun” to play with. He did have his suspicions for a while but wanted to see how long it would take you to tell him.
Blade
He does not understand religious implications. Even if you try to explain it to him it's not like it'll change his opinion of you. If you know who your godly parent is he will read every book and legend about them and show you all the coolest stories he can find! For him it's a bonding experience, for you he's just being adorable.
Garu
He’ll ask you what it means to be a demigod first. When you tell him it basically just gave you power he thinks it's the coolest thing in the world! He's very sweet about it and will listen to any stories you want to share about your heritage, and will love any part of your demigod abilities you decide to show him. He will never push you to show him anything though.
Karu
“Demigod? Can you eat that?” He will be a little offended when he finds out about your power. He doesn't like the idea of his partner being stronger than him (he doesn't want someone to have power over him). He comes around though if you show him a cool trick or something. He is very easy to win over.
Dante
His ego takes a bit of a hit and he's actually bitter for about a week before he finally relents and goes back to normal. He makes a point to tell you that even if you're a demigod he is still the Sun lord and your superior in Solaria. Even if your power is impressive he prefers that you don't use it. Not just because of his ego but because he's worried someone will take advantage of you because of the powers you have.
Rei
Also doesn't believe you are a demigod. He knows you have great power but he doesn't believe gods exist, so by extension demigods don't exist either. Maybe you're a descendant of a powerful Yokai? Or you've been gifted by the elemental spirits? Either way he refuses to believe you're a demigod unless you can somehow tangibly prove that gods exist, and that you are related to one.
Eiden
He's impressed and amazed, but not surprised. Honestly he's seen so many fantasy things since coming to this world that he expected to meet a god sooner or later. He's just happy that his partner is so cool! Also how many people can say they slept with a demigod! He is definitely going to brag about this.
Aster
Really hope you weren't trying to keep this a secret because once he knows, everyone knows. He is also the type of person Dante was worried about. He will find a way to benefit from your abilities whether you know it or not. He loves the fact that he has a powerful partner though. Is makes him feel that much more powerful.
Morvay
“Oh that's why your c*m is so heavenly!” I can see him making so many jokes and innuendos about it. All with a giant grin on his face. He doesn't really take it seriously. Not that he doesn't believe you, he does, but he doesn't care that you're a demigod. He may use it to brag to Aster though.

How “realistic” is too have a fat, unathletic, clumsy, cowardly character (think Samwell from GOT) become pasable at fighting if they put in the training? Aren’t just some people completely talenteless at it?
Talent is a concept that gets utterly mutilated by writers. Being untalented doesn't mean you can't learn, it just means that you'll have to put more effort into whatever you're trying to do.
A lot of writers use, “talent,” as a cheat to give their characters inexplicable skills. That's not how that really works. In most cases, when someone is, “naturally talented,” at something, it just means they commit to learning that new skill. It is advantageous, but it's not that they're automatically better.
Not having talent, simply means that you need to learn. You may need to work harder, you may need to put in more effort, but you can get there. Talent does not determine what you can or cannot do, just how easily it comes to you.
“Talent,” can also be an excellent excuse to stop when things get difficult. It's easy to step back from something and discourage yourself because you think you're untalented. The truth is, there comes a point when you're learning anything and progressing will become more difficult. That doesn't mean you should stop; it just means that it will take more effort to move forward.
Honestly, there's a bit of a mercy in hitting that point early on. As any former child prodigy can tell you, if you're used to things being easy, when the talent runs out, the kick-over into having to work for your improvement can be devastating.
Can you train in martial arts if you're fat? Yes.
Can you train in martial arts if you're not athletic? Yeah.
If you really commit to it, by the time you're done, you're probably going to be in good shape. Martial arts (and that includes military training) will include a lot of physical exercise. You can practice martial arts and remain heavy. That's a function of your metabolism and diet. However, that fat is likely to be a bit deceptive, as you'll probably be in pretty own good shape, just with a layer of fat on top of it.
Also worth remembering, that fat is actually useful in a cold climate, it's insulation, and portable energy reserves.
Can you clumsy? Maybe. Again, this something that training will address. Everyone's a bit clumsy when they first start engaging in a new physical activity. You learn, and over time, you deal with that.
Can you be a coward? Yeah. Fear of something that can, realistically, kill you is a rational response. Being afraid of dying is reasonable. Bravery is the ability to control your fears, as opposed to letting your fears control you. Like any other skill, this can be learned. Just because you cannot control a fear today does not mean you will forever under its thrall. In some ways, there's something a lot more commendable about a character who progresses into overcoming their fears, rather than living in denial.
None of these are deal breakers. They make the process of training harder, especially at the beginning, but if you're talking about someone with a real commitment to the training, none of this will stop them, or even meaningfully determine who they can be in the end.

Danny wakes up in PMMM and wants to murder the weird God cat that's bothering the kids
Ok I wanna write this
"Get back here you rat!"
The white rabbit-cat thing dodges another three of Danny's ecto rays as he races through the back halls of a mall under construction. He has no idea where he is, only that the thing he's chasing is bad news.
It has eyes not unlike the Observants, and a voice laced with double meanings. Danny didn't appreciate it staring into his soul- his Core, as though it could sense it.
The creature keeps running for its life, able to appear in places it shouldn't be near before Danny can strike it. The strange ring-like structures around its long ears seem to ring strangely when his blasts whiff the beast.
The short chase comes to an end when he hits a dead end. He skids to a stop, panting- somehow unable to summon his ghost form after the portal tossed him here. He's shocked he can even call upon any of his powers, stranger that the only one he can access are his ecto blasts. But it's not completely shocking- places outside of Amity tend to be less forgiving with their low ambient ectoplasm levels. The halls are dark, ominous- there's a tension in the air not unlike a ghost attack waiting to happen.
He doesn't like it.
Danny uses a ball of ectoplasm as a flashlight as he creeps through the more chained-off sections of the mall, a tingle creeping up his spine. He wants explanations, and the creature knows something- it has to with how it stares into Danny's soul. It's the only lead he has, and he's too stubborn to give up on it.
"You know, you would make an incredible magia- all it would take is making a contract with me."
Danny nearly screams as he whips around. The strange creature sits perched, not unlike a cat, on a construction barrier directly behind him. Its eyes stare once again into his soul, digging into his very essence. Danny's eyes dart around the dark, trying to find anything to use to his advantage. He comes up empty handed, so he does what he knows, and stands his ground.
Intimidation it is.
"I'm not stupid enough to do something for a creature that really shouldn't be able to talk. Especially if it involves contracts." Thank the Ancients Sam had a phase where she obsessed over Faustian tales and fae folklore. That and his firsthand experience with Desiree. Be careful what you wish for, and all that.
"You do seem to be someone who has had dealings before. You are one step away from being a Magia, after all." The creature appears directly next to him on a pile of equipment and grooms itself with a paw. "It would be rather easy on both our ends to embrace your full potential. All you would need to do is Wish for something- anything you desire. And you'd finish becoming what you were meant to be- a Magia."
Danny starts, jumping back with his hand glowing. He hadn't heard it approach.
"Jokes on you- I know how wishes work!" he exclaims, taking a fighting stance. "No matter what, you'd twist it into the opposite of what I want, and I'm not gonna fall for it." The ecto energy crackles in his palm, anxiety at being stared at by those beady, soulless eyes gathers in the back of his throat like acrid lightning. Or like the nerves before a test.
Danny bristles as the creature pads up to him from its perch and tilts its head.
"Interesting- although you have no contract written binding your soul, you are somehow more like magia than human. Tell me, Daniel Fenton, did you receive anything in return for the sacrifice you've made? Do you have a reason to fight the Witches wherever you hail from? Or were you granted this terrible responsibility without fair compensation- no benefit to your life for the amount of magic you expend fighting."
Danny stills and shudders, still unable to force a transformation in the low ectoplasmic atmosphere of this place.
"I simply wanted to offer my services. To help you fight, for protection- to make you feel... whole. Tell me," it looks once again into Danny's soul, unblinking, "Are you aware of how close you have wandered to a truly Hopeless being's lair?"
The walls around him shimmer with unreality, he can hear whispers of a bastardized, corrupted form of Ghost Speak echoing in his head. It physically pains him to listen. He slams his hands over his ears to drown out the noise, but it tickles the back of his brain, makes the space behind his eyes itch. His Core pulses in warning as the room shifts as though it were underwater.
"What is this?!? What are you doing?!"
"Nothing. The culprit to this disturbance is a Witch- a creature made of the despair that lives in the darkness of humanity. A being that wishes to spread misery and corruption upon the innocent." its eyes remain staring at him. "With how you are now- incomplete in your form, you will not survive should you be pulled in to this labyrinth you have wandered near."
Danny looks up from where he'd ducked his head. His Core pulses again. Whatever this thing messing with his mind is, it's similar to a ghost- but wrong. Corrupted. Evil. And yet... sad. He steels his face and glares back at the creature.
"Witches are creatures of pure darkness, they cause unexplained suicides, death, sickness, catastrophe. You are simply unable to unleash your full potential in your current form, but if you make a wish, sign a contract- you would be unstoppable."
"I don't need to be unstoppable. I can handle... whatever this witch thing is without your help- and it's not like I plan on getting caught in a labyrinth. I'd rather not fight another Minotaur."
Danny begins to walk away from the shimmering spots, but can't find the way he came. The chains hanging from the ceiling whisper with anguish.
The creature continues to follow with its blank expression.
"Suit yourself, Daniel Fenton. My services are only a call away. You'd be surprised how amicable I am to those who change their mind last minute- in fact, we encourage it."
And with that, the creature leaves.
Danny clamps his hands over his ears again. The padding of his sneakers through the endless maze of mall construction echoes hollowly through the otherwise silent back halls. "Sam would be pumped to find out the backrooms are real." He laughs joylessly. Danny has no idea how long he's been wandering, but he knows he's not lost. The mall is shifting around him as he wanders, and he knows he's being watched.
He scratches at his wrist idly.
It had started itching, right over his death scar, about fifteen minutes ago. The whispers make it itch more, and he grumbles. He's getting frustrated- usually by now the ghost watching him would have jumped out and attacked, but whatever the thing watching him is (the witch thingy most likely) is biding its time to piss him off.
Another wave of empty emotions waft over him from a doorway that wasn't there the last time he circled this very hallway. His wrist itches more before suddenly burning as though electricity shocked him once again. He looks down and gasps at the strange butterfly marking that's appeared on his wrist, just as his hand reaches for the door of its own volition.
Danny seethes as his body disobeys him, but is brought to stunned silence when the door opens, sending the hallway it leads to flying towards him. The next doorway barrels at him, and he closes his eyes to brace for the impact before it opens as well.
Again and again doors race forward and open, before he finds himself in a domed garden of brambles and roses.
Danny feels his Core lurch as the mark on his arm burns brightly before fading.
"That was weird..." he whispers to himself. He only takes a few moments looking around before finding a rock made of paper to hide behind. The inner sanctum of this Ancients forsaken Labyrinth is enormous- everything looks as though its made of collage paper and watercolor. There's a large chaise lounge in the center of the room, surrounded by strange creatures shaped like dandelions with mustaches.
"Okay that's even weirder..."
The dandelion beings pass roses between them, piling them on and around the lounge in the center of the room. The lighting overhead in the glass dome is dim, but it seems to be getting brighter- the light itself pinpointing on something resting on the chaise.
Danny's entire being revolts as he looks upon the strange black jewel. The bottom is needle thin, resting on a soft silk pillow without making nary a dent. A strange flash of light bursts from it- pure black as void and cold to the touch. It begins to break, forming into a disfigured shape. The shadow it becomes undulates and pulses, growing more and more gargantuan as it explodes from the jewel with a shattering scream of terror.
Danny feels his eyes involuntarily water, the tears falling freely down his cheeks as the jewel produces something similar to a Death Echo, forming into a being made of rose bushes, butterflies, and pure sorrow.
Danny witnesses the birth of something horrifying and his Core screams at him to run. This thing is dangerous, it's dangerous and wrong and will be his End. He stands to leave, but finds his legs unable to move. He struggles, panicked.
Roses appear from nothing as they quickly morph into black tendrils and ensnare him. He's lofted up, up, up to the Thing's- the Witch's 'face'. A corrupt butterfly stares back at him and howls. Danny shrieks in response, summoning an ecto ray in defense. He blasts the witch in its 'chest'. It doesn't appreciate this much, tossing him to the ground.
He shoots another few blasts at it as he falls, smirk on his face through the panic. But without access to his flight or intangibility, he plummets to the brambles below.
Danny forgets he can't summon his ghost form here. He remembers too late that his human form can't handle as much as his ghost form.
"Shit-"
"Oh so now you show up again."
Danny sits up from where his body crumpled. Thankfully, he only has a broken arm and a ton of scratches to show for it, having landed mostly in a fucked up rosebush.
"Have you given my offer more thought?" the rabbit-thing asks from its perch behind him.
"Sorry, I was too busy being jumped by a plant from my worst nightmares to think about wishing for a million bucks or whatever." Danny rolls his eyes, trying to hide the terror in his shaking body. "Seriously, do you have anything better to do than stalk me?"
"You are in no real position to ask this many questions, Daniel Fenton. This witch will kill you and devour you, and not necessarily in that order. It would be beneficial on both our ends for you to sign a contract with me."
Danny hates how right this little shit cat is. Without access to most of his powers, he's practically useless against a monster this large. And if he's useless he can't defeat, let alone escape. Not to think about what this thing will do to innocent mall-goers should it get bored of eating his corpse or whatever.
He shudders.
"They say dealing with the devil never goes well." he responds to the creature. "Although it's kind of a dick move, waiting to prey on me at my lowest point."
The creature stares at him with its infuriatingly neutral 'cute' expression. "Oh but I'm no devil. You may call me Kyubey. I am simply the familiar to all magical girls- in your case, magia. A contract with me would grant you the power to take on this witch, to embrace the potential you've already started to accumulate."
The witch watches angrily in the background, trying to seek him out amongst the brambles. Danny shudders.
"You keep mentioning potential. The hell does that mean?"
Kyubey stares at his soul with its vacant, beady eyes. "Never before have we seen someone manifest their own magic without a contract. It should be an impossibility! Bringing you to full potential could make you one of the strongest magia of all time. You could wish for nearly anything, and your potential would grant it!"
He considers it for a second as he hears the chains above them shaking. The noise blends in with the cacophonous whispers of dread.
"I..." Danny starts, another question on his lips before he feels the tug of magic on his Core, the sense of gears and hourglasses gripping everything around him. His head slowly turns as everything is frozen in place.
He blinks.
Kyubey's form fills with holes as the sound of gunfire reaches his ears.
Time resumes.
Kyubey's corpse collapses before him in a puddle of red and white viscera.
Danny screams, and the witch roars.
It wasn't supposed to happen this way.
In the near one hundred times she's done this month long song and dance, these back halls have only ever been occupied by four creatures. Herself, Miki, Kaname, and the Incubator.
So why is it there's a new presence? Why is Kyubey stalking a foreigner through the halls?
Never mind that.
She cannot fail. Her mission is clear, and she's once again ready to strike when Kyubey inevitably finds Madoka again, as it always does when this mall trip comes to pass.
Homura finds her patience wavering- it should have made its move on Madoka by now, but for some reason it's focused on a boy who clearly has no idea where he is or what he's doing. An anomaly in all these repeated timelines who won't even be able to see the incubator stalking him. She shouldn't waste her time following, but as soon as she loses sight of the damned incubator it'll strike. With her luck, it will snare Madoka in its claws in five minutes or less if she loses her nerve.
So she follows, shield in hand and ready to pounce.
It doesn't take too much longer for something to happen.
The boy, impossibly, sees Kyubey approach. Even more impossibly, he hits it with green fire when it asks for a contract. Her trigger finger itches, but it lacks a pistol for the moment.
Homura has no idea what to expect, but she did not expect for the boy to start threatening Kyubey, the same green magic being shot at it while in a fully human guise. Even stranger, the boy doesn't have any sort of indication that he's a magical gir- no a magia. He'd be a magia, she realizes.
Homura continues to follow the boy, long after Kyubey 'gives up'. With how he ignorantly walked right into a hatching witch's lair- Gertrude, one of the weaker witches to encounter she muses to herself- she doubts he's any sort of magia himself. Yet. Especially with how Kyubey is pursuing him. She wonders if this means Kyubey will leave Madoka alone for a while, with the boy catching its attention.
However, hive minded creatures can be everywhere at once.
Homura's momentary distraction causes her to stumble when a wall juts up from the floor beneath her. She curses when the labyrinth opens fully, separating herself and the boy she's investigating. There must be a reason he's shown up this loop, with how he can manipulate magic without a contract. There might even be the possibility he can help save Madoka this time, but she won't get her hopes up too high. Allies are far and few in between with how callous she must be to survive, and she doubts a normal looking foreign boy will put up with her aloof and cruel facade.
She fights her way through the labyrinth, using her magic to track the inner sanctum just as the boy witnesses the birth of a witch. There's no way he's a magia- not if he's reacting in enough fear to chill the room. No seasoned, or even new magia would dare show so much fear towards a witch. Not this openly.
Homura readies her gun as the boy is lofted in the air, almost too quickly for her to interfere.
Time pauses and he blasts the witch with his strange magic.
Wait.
How...?
Homura's brow furrows in distrust.
How is this-
Time resumes.
The blasts hit. The witch shrieks.
Homura is not close enough. She is not fast enough.
She is too surprised to stop time again.
And the boy falls.
Kyubey is a bastard. This is a fact.
The amount of times Homura has seen it approach Madoka or her friends at their lowest is astronomical, so she's not at all surprised to see it approach the boy after he takes what should have been a deadly fall. She's glad she's seen so much brutality in her short yet too long life- the sound of crunching bones is much easier to handle this way.
She wonders why Kyubey is being so persistent, but even more so, she needs to know how he was able to nullify her time stop, or at least how he was able to continue to move somewhat. She doesn't appreciate unknown variables, let alone ones that can be a threat to her mission. So she listens in- masking her presence best as she can from the Incubator.
"Oh but I'm no devil. You may call me Kyubey. I am simply the familiar to all magical girls- in your case, magia. A contract with me would grant you the power to take on this witch, to embrace the potential you've already started to accumulate."
Homura rolls her eyes. The Incubator might not look like a devil, but it is one she knows deeply.
"You keep mentioning potential. The hell does that mean?"
Homura prepares one of her more efficient guns, not liking the tone of the Incubator, nor the nervous panic in the boy's shoulders. Potential is power as a magical girl. The more potential, the stronger the magic and the more terrifying the witch. She reaches out to try feeling for the threads of potential surrounding the boy, shuddering as she does. Her eyes widen in surprise when it whispers the same tune as her own abilities- Time, but something more, something Other.
A possible ally, if she plays her cards right.
"Never before have we seen someone manifest their own magic without a contract. It should be an impossibility! Bringing you to full potential could make you one of the strongest magia of all time. You could wish for nearly anything, and your potential would grant it!"
Homura jolts to awareness then and there. The boy's eyes look resigned, his shoulders slump. He's going to do it- and she doesn't quite want to deal with either a new magia or witch with her mission on the line.
"I..."
Her decision is made. She winds up her shield and freezes everything as her gun unleashes a barrage of ammo at the Incubator.
Satisfied with the gored mess of the creature, she approaches the boy with a toss of her hair to soothe her nerves.
She's not surprised his eyes follow her despite the frozen time.
So she releases her hold on it and watches as he takes a shuddering breath and Kyubey's corpse collapses between them.
"You should not be here."
Danny snorts in response. "Believe me, I wouldn't be here even if I wanted to."

[Introduction]
So, electronics are super valuable and everyone wants them. Those big corporate stores have seriously stepped up their security game, making it harder to snag what you want.
But, let's face it, we're all human. We make mistakes and sometimes the store isn't on top of their game. Maybe they're understaffed, maybe the workers just don't care, or maybe they're dealing with personal issues. Whatever the case may be, it's not always impossible to get what you want.
Now, let's focus on black friday, Cyber Monday, and Boxing Day. I mean, come on, those are the days everyone's going crazy for deals. Just look up the dates, it's in the 3 friday of November every year.
Store associates will be running around helping other customers, leaving perfect opportunities for you to swoop in and grab what you want. Don't be scared to take advantage of these days, no matter what others say. Just check out my guide for spotting the store security.
Of course, you need to be organized. Plan out your route, set an early alarm, grab some coffee, and get a ride or make sure your car is empty. With a little bit of luck, you should be able to get most of what you're after.
Remember, it's gonna take some patience, skills, guts, and a bit of luck. Take whatever you can get, even if it's a similar product.
[Find your spot]
Start by making a list of the items you really want or need.
Now, what should you be looking for? Do your research, get out there, and start scoping out the best spots. Look for places with easy access to electronics. Check out big grocery stores, malls, drugstores, and electronics stores.
If you live in a small town, consider traveling to a bigger city or town. Map out all the stores in that area and plan out your route. Either go area by area or store by store, whichever you prefer.
Now, those electronics stores are a whole different story. They've got some serious security. But on black friday, they often put out a pallet of electronic goodies
Pick up the item and head over to customer service with a long lineup. Wait in the line for about 10 to 15 minutes, then act annoyed and leave with the item. This trick works because you forgot the receipt at home and didn't want to risk being denied and walking out. Just make sure to be natural and blend in as much as possible.
Another method is to have someone distract the worker or notice that they're busy with another customer. Take advantage of this moment to walk out with the item without attracting attention.
If you're in a drugstore with an electronics section or a department store, you can set up the item you want, remove the security tag, and have it ready for pickup. Buy something like $150 headphones to get a receipt. Then, simply pick up the item you want, walk out, and return the headphones on another day.
Another option is to set up a scenario where you purchase $800 speakers or a soundbar. While paying, ask the cashier to put $150 headphones in a bag. As you walk out, casually pick up the soundbar over your shoulder and wave goodbye. This method works because you're only allowed to buy and return items at the electronics area.
You can also try putting items in a bag and walking out, or leaving the item by the front door and picking it up later. Look for opportunities to make your exit when there's a momentary distraction.
To be continued... we need to come up with better ways to explain things.
For now, plan a day during Black Friday, sales, or Boxing Day. In summary, find your moment on boxing day. If it's not there, either come back later or wait around until you find your opportunity to walk out unnoticed.

My Beginner/Newbie Guide to Neopets
Never used the site before in your life but wanna check it out? Just logged into your old account and wanna get back into it? Saw my promo and wanna take advantage of it? Wanna make loads of neopoints? As someone with about 20mil in the bank I can't guarantee following my advice will make you MEGA rich but I can get you pretty close with pretty minimal effort.
TL;DR do your dailies and invest in stocks (it's way easier than it sounds, idk shit about real life stocks)
(And before I hear any "isnt neopets run by scientologists" the answer is no, it never was, neopets.com once fell into a company that was run by a scientologist for about a year back in the early 2000s)
Guide below the cut!
THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE TO TAKE FROM THIS GUIDE:
Spin Trudy's Surprise wheel every day (link here)
Invest in stocks (guide here)
Do whatever dailies you want (link here)
Use Jellyneo's item database to search/price anything (link here)
This guide assumes you've already made an account, a pet, and have about 2000np (given to every new account) to spend, and that you're currently logged in (you'll need to be for most of these links).
Confused by the site layout? No idea where to go? No worries, I'll link just about everything you need here.
DISCLAIMER: There's a lot of stuff I DON'T do, but if there's something that interests you, go ahead and try it!! I just do the bare minimum when it comes to dailies lol
~~Dailies~~
If you clicked on this link, you're probably already overwhelmed by the sheer number of dailies your expected to do. The good news is, I don't do at least half of these. Most of these aren't worth your time or points and I only really do easy 1-click dailies that net me free shit. I'll show you exactly which ones those are.
Let's start with the Classics-
Tumblr media
I've already gone ahead and erased the ones a new account will never have to worry about.
These are the priority freebie dailies you should be doing each day when you can. Lemme explain what each one does:
Soup Kitchen: Until you have 3000np, you can feed your pets here for free!
Free Jelly: One free jelly (worth 2 meals) each day
Giant Omelette: One free omelette (worth 3 meals) each day
Interest @ Bank: You can collect interest on your bank account each day (you need a bank account, I'll explain later)
Money Tree: Free stuff people throw away, guide further down
Trudy's Surprise: Free neopoints daily
Monthly Freebies: Once a month, not daily, free 2000np and food
Obsidian Quarry: One free piece of obsidian daily. I just sell them for 1np a piece to get people coming to my shop
Apple Bobbing: Free item daily (small chance to lose an item or nps)
Anchor Management: Free item daily
Mysterious Negg Cave: Solve a puzzle for a free item (solver here)
Grave Danger: Petpet required. Send it down into the catacombs daily to find items.
These are all the easiest of the dailies. Next up we have
The Wheels-
Tumblr media
Yes, just these wheels, because none of the scratchcards are worth trying to me. I've never won anything good from them. These wheels are all relatively low-cost, but if you only wanted to pick ONE, do the Wheel of Mediocrity. I've found it has the highest return for the cost.
Also, the Wheel of Monotony can go for literal hours. I tend to let it go in a muted tab and do other stuff in the meantime. Anyway, next is
Win NPs, Items, Stats-
Tumblr media
I've erased anything that takes too much time, doesn't work cause flash, can only be accessed at certain times, or isn't newbie accessible. I'll elaborate on the rest;
Tombola: Draw a ticket and win a prize (free)
Deserted Tomb: Go into a tomb and potentially find treasure (may hurt your neopet)
Fruit Machine: One free spin per day for fruit
Coltzan's Shrine: One of the best dailies. Potentially increases stats, gives NP or items
Kreludor Meteor: Free items when it works
TDMBGPOP: Free items (usually plushies) or NPs
Underwater Fishing: Free fish or fishing-related items
Forgotten Shore: Requires treasure map (guide here)
Healing Springs: Heals your pets or gives you an item. Can be done every 30mins. I recommend coming here last to heal pets after some dangerous dailies. You can also come here every 30mins if your pet is sick until they're cured.
These are also good, easy freebies I recommend doing daily. Personally I also use the Battledome but that's because I've actually trained one of my pets to fight. Now for the
Pay NPs and Win-
Tumblr media
No, really, that's it.
Okay, I also personally do Cheeseroller, and I used to do more carnival games when they worked, but these are the only ones you really need to worry about in this section.
Faerie Caverns, Test Your Strength, and Pick Your Own are simple games where you can win NPs and items.
Garage Sale is a shop where most items are sold below market value. Great for reselling.
Bargain stocks are cheaper than regular stocks and are only for poor/new users.
And what about
Other Neopets Stuff To Do-
Tumblr media
A lot less intimidating now, huh?
Most things in this section are just... things to do. Things that aren't all that profitable. These four are the only ones you should bother with if your priority is getting NPs.
Symol Hole requires a PetPet. You can win items, but this is rare.
Stock Portfolio... I'll get into that soon. But this is important.
Trading Post is where you go to offload tons of junk, get tons of junk, buy/sell anything worth more than 999999np, and find good deals
Employment Agency is where you take jobs that involve finding and buying a certain number of a particular item in a certain timeframe. I only recommend this if you've become familiar with Jellyneo's item data base and the Shop Wizard.
Now what about the next sections, Quests, Competitions, and Games?
Don't worry about 'em.
When you're financially better off, you can try doing some daily Faerie quests if you want, but I don't recommend getting into them right away. Contests are cool and all, but not my thing personally, so I can't tell you much about them. As for games... most of them are still broken.
But the game Fashion Fever is an easy free 900np a day. Just wait 10 seconds before finishing the game, then send score.
Wait, how does the Stock Market work?
Great question!
The stock market is the easiest way to rack up neopoints. I can't comment on bargain stocks because I haven't done them, but I can tell you all about the regular stock market.
(You could also uh, watch this 5 minute guide here, which is how I originally learned how the stock market works)
Conceptually, you buy stocks while they're cheap, then wait until their value goes up and sell them at a high price. You can easily turn 15000np into 45000np by simply waiting.
Also, I really recommend you have 15000np before buying any stocks. Do other dailies until you have that much at least.
Your stock portfolio is here. Read the scrolling stocks at the top of the page:
Tumblr media
Until you find a stock valued at 15np (circled above). Once you have the stock name (this one is SWNC), go to 'Buy' (right under the scrolling stocks in blue),
Tumblr media
And buy them! Buy 1000 at a time.
15np is the LOWEST a stock can go before it's unbuyable, and you can only buy a total of 1000np per day.
Now, we just have to wait for the value to go up.
Tumblr media
I only sell stocks once the value is +300%. SWNC is currently at 0.00% because it's worth the value I originally bought it at (15np).
Check your portfolio daily, buy new stocks when you can, sell when they're high, and sooner or later you'll be raking in hundreds of thousands of neopoints per sale!
Does Trudy's Surprise really guarantee thousands of free NPs?
Yes. No, seriously, yes.
The first time you spin the wheel, you'll probably only get about 1000np. Come back the next day, spin it again, maybe you'll get 2000np. By the end of the first week, probably 6000np.
And on day 25? 100000np. Guaranteed. Then the cycle resets to day 1, and it's back to about 1000np.
With Trudy's Surprise, you can very easily obtain around 200000np a month.
BUT. You need to spin the wheel once EVERY DAY or the counter resets and you're back to day 1 again.
There are days where I really don't feel like doing my dailies at all, but I always try to make sure I get this one in. It's absolutely worth logging it.
You mentioned a Bank Account?
If you haven't opened a bank account (for neopoints, not actual money), do so now!!
A bank will hold onto your neopoints for you so you don't lose them during random events, and you can collect interest every day. There's a cost to open and upgrade an account, but no fees besides that. The more nps in your account, the more interest you can collect! I collect about 6000np a day just from my nps sitting in my account.
Okay, I did my dailies and now I have all this stuff sitting in my inventory. Now what?
Well, you have a few options:
Use them. Food feeds your pet, books educate them, toys entertain them... before doing anything else with some items, consider if you want to use them on your pet.
Donate them. If you're completely at a loss or don't want to bother selling them, you can always donate or discard them to free up space.
Store them in your Safety Deposit Box. Got items that you think you'll use later that are currently taking up space? Store them in your SDB or Closet for now.
Trade them. Go to the trading post, browse new trades, and use these items as fodder for getting good deals. Alternatively, put them up for trade and see what people offer.
Sell them. If you haven't opened a shop yet, I highly recommend you do so. You can put items in the shop, but they won't be displayed until you've set a price. Don't know what to charge? Search the item in the Jellyneo item database to find out how much it's worth!
Why even do any of this?
Honestly, that's up to you to decide.
Neopets is a weird site. People came for the pets, but the only ones that stayed have remained for the economy. You either find it fun or you don't, and I know it's harder when you're a beginner.
What really got me into neopets again was finding a goal. If you want to get rich, that's the one thing you need most: a goal. It could be a static number, a dream pet, a dream gallery, w/e. My first main goal was a gold paintbrush for a pet I don't even have anymore, and my current goal is 25mil in my account. After that, I think my next goal will be to access the lab ray.
If you're just starting out and don't know what you want your goal to be, I'd suggest finding that old dream pet or picking a new one here: This site shows every pet in every colour. Find one that speaks to you, find out how much the paintbrush or morphing potion or whatever method costs, and work for that.
I'm still confused/have questions.
Please feel free to DM me!! I love neopets and am trying to get more people (especially my friends) into it. I don't know everything but the least I can do is point you to a guide that can help. Don't hesitate to reach out to me!
You can also neomail me if you want <3
