𝐘𝐎𝐔'𝐑𝐄 𝐉𝐄𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐒 (𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃𝐍'𝐓 𝐁𝐄)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: you were tired of waiting around for heeseung to confess. so, to rile him up, you go on a 'date' with his best friend, jake.
genre: angsty fluff
includes: roommates au, uni au (mentioned once) friends to lovers, jealousy, heeseung is whipped but won't make a move, jake is mentioned once as hee’s bsf, angst with happy ending
pairing: bsf! heeseung x bsf! fem! reader
word count: 1.3k
a/n: late heeseung birthday special! isn't that angsty unlike SOMEONE (read: sol) tbh, had this in my drafts so i just rolled with it
Tumblr media
“Where are you going?” He eyed you as you headed towards the door. Your outfit wasn’t something you usually wore. You were all dressed up, ready to go outside. “To a cafe.” “Dressed like that?” He raised an eyebrow, leaning against the wall. “Any issue?”
“Well, you usually don’t go to cafes- hell, anywhere- dressed so…fancy? You’re trying to impress someone, hm?” He saw right through you. It wasn’t like you were hiding it extremely well, but it still always caught you off guard.
“Okay, maybe I am. Any issue?”
“Who is it?” “Jake.” Heeseung’s eyes widened and he crossed his arms. You were trying to impress his best friend. What did Jake have that he didn’t?
“Why? You told me before that you liked him. What’s with the sudden interest?”
“I just like him, okay?”
He looked up at the ceiling.
“Um, I just don’t know if he’s the right one for you.”
“Well, I can’t just wait around anymore. I’m going to have to search.”
“Yeah, but- I don’t think you’re his type.”
“...are you saying that negatively?”
He pushed himself off the wall and came closer to you. His eyes were soft but the tone of his voice was firm.
“Look, I’ve known him for a long time too, it just wouldn't be a good match.”
“You need to also know that life is full of surprises.”
“This would be a nasty one.”
You were getting him all riled up. The point of this whole ‘date’ was to see if Heeseung would react. You weren’t actually going out romantically with Jake, it was just a meet up. You hadn’t fallen for him as hard as you feel for Heeseung.
“Well, why are you so pressed about it? It shouldn’t bother you in any way, right? We’re just friends, it’s not like we’re dating or anything.”
He had a very strong urge to just kiss you to make you shut up.
“I know, I just…wanted to tell you what I thought. I’m serious though, it’s not a good idea.”
“Didn’t ask, don’t care.”
He narrowed his eyes at you, clearly pissed off.
“Okay then. Have fun with Jake.”
“I will.”
That hit him like a shot in the heart. He provoked you, so why was this hurting?
“Call me if you need anything or if something happens, hm?”
He held your hand for a few seconds before letting you go and smiling, although it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Thanks Hee. You’re the best best friend someone could have.”
You hugged him, and he hugged you back. His grip was oddly stronger than normal, and he was clutching onto you as if he didn’t want you to leave. You ignored this and broke off the hug before waving to him as you walked out the door of your apartment, closing it.
Tumblr media
Heeseung stood frozen there for a few seconds, before sighing and pinching his left arm.
No, this wasn’t a nightmare. He wished it was.
His vision was blurring due to the tears in his eyes, and he pursed his lips into a thin line.
Hell, here he was, crying over a girl.
That too, you.
He slumped onto the floor, burying his head in his hands.
He wanted to scream, punch something and take his anger out on something.
He did neither.
He stared blankly at the wall, hands now crossed against his chest again. He tried to think of anything, everything other than you and your date with his best friend.
He failed miserably.
After a few hours, a notification popped up on his phone while he was mindlessly watching TV. He turned it on to see that it was six messages from you. He opened it to see that it was five pictures of you and Jake, with bright smiles on both of your faces. His chest tightened, and he wanted to throw his phone against the wall. He wanted to block you. He wanted to tell you that you were breaking his heart. He wanted to tell you how he felt.
‘happy 4 u :)’
You looked at his message, cogs turning in your brain. That was…a response alright. You couldn’t understand what he felt behind it. If he was truly happy, he’d text something in a more excited manner. If he was jealous or mad or sad or just feeling negative in general, he’d text less enthusiastic. What was he like back home?
Tumblr media
You reached your shared apartment. He unlocked the door, expression unreadable.
“Hey Seung. Nothing burned down while I was gone, right?”
You chuckled, but it was lost on him. He usually laughed along, no matter how corny the joke was.
“Check for yourself. I’m going to bed.”
“Uh, so quickly? It’s only 8 p.m.”
“We have uni tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow’s a Sunday.”
“I want to wake up early to study.”
“Since when were you studious? You usually stay up until like 4 a.m. playing video games with me.”
“Don’t want to this time.”
“Something’s wrong, isn’t it? What happened? You know yo-”
“No.”
He stormed off to his room. As he was about to enter, you pulled his arm, preventing him from going.
“Heeseung, you’re not acting like yourself. You usually trust me with anything.”
“You don’t really care.”
“I d-”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It does!”
“You don’t need to know, okay?”
He raised his voice at you, making him sound intimidating. Your grip on his arm didn’t falter though, and you were slowly pulling him closer.
“Seung-”
“No, I can’t- I can’t trust you with my feelings, because damn it Y/N, you’re the reason behind it! It’s so obvious that I’m so foolishly in love with you and yet you’re so fucking oblivious to how I feel! Do you know how- how hard it is to hear you talk about Jake like that, how hard it is to pretend to be happy- for you, when all I just want is for you to love me back?!”
He was breathing heavily after his outburst. His eyes were squeezed shut, and he gritted his teeth together in frustration. Your grip on his bicep loosened, and your hand slid down from his arm to his hand.
“Heeseung…”
His eyes shot open in fear as he realized what he just said.
“Y/N, Y/N, I’m so sorry- I didn’t…didn’t mean it, mm? It was a mis-mistake, I was just joking- haha! So funny right? Very funn-”
You pulled him closer until your noses were touching. Shocked by the sudden movement, he whispered quietly, his warm breath hitting your face.
“What…Y/N, what does this mean?”
“It means I like you too, Heeseung.”
His eyes softened, and both of his arms wrapped around your waist, holding you so delicately.
“I’m- I can’t even explain how I feel in words like now.”
One of his hands went up to your hair, his palm on the back of your head, holding you firmly in place, yet it felt so loving. His fingers got tangled in your hair, and he started into your eyes, smiling softly. You leaned in closer, your noses brushing against each other’s.
“May I…?”
“You may.”
He moved close enough to allow your foreheads to bump. He continued gazing into your eyes, admiring them. He them slowly moved his lips to yours, closing his eyes. He kissed you gently, holding you close. His lips moved carefully against yours, as the fingers of his free hand intertwined with yours. After a few seconds, he pulled away, before wrapping his arms around your waist and hugging you, sighing.
“I’m sorry for the sudden outburst, Y/N.”
“It’s okay- it helped the both of us anyway.”
He chuckled a this, and pressed a light kiss to your forehead.
“Thank you.”
“For…?”
“For not choosing Jake.”
“I knew you’d be jealous!”
“I was not!”
“You were!”
“Was not!”
“Were!” “Was n-”
He felt your lips against his again, making him get flustered. After you broke the kiss, you grinned.
“You totally were jealous. At least now you know that you shouldn’t be.”

Pokémon anime oneshot request! Mallow’s dad and brother go into the mist and sees Mallow’s mom (a semi-AU of the episode Memories in the Mist)
Abe looked towards where his son was, but the fog was getting thicker and thicker as they searched for Mallow.
“Dad, what do we do? I can barely see in this fog.”
“I don’t know kid, but we’ll find our way out of here, and find Mallow.”
It seemed like hours till they finally found some place in the forest with less fog.
That’s when a lone figure appears in the distance.
It’s faint, but at this point Abe can see the person clearly…and he nearly burst into tears.
“Dad? Who’s that? Is it Mallow?”
Abe didn’t look away from the figure, he couldn’t, as he swore he never thought he’d see her again.
“Wait…mom?!”
Ulu than runs out, his arms stretched as he hoped, prayed, and still was suprised when he actually was able to hug….
“Mama!” Uli sobbed as he felt the familiar, yet long lost warmth once more.
It didn’t take long till Abe came and hugged as well, walking over felt like an eternity, and yet so worth it as Abe couldn’t stop crying, hugging close hoping she won’t leave, won’t be dead.
“My boys.”
It was an eternity, a perfection, and yet Abe knew it won’t last.
“Mallow…she should be here.” Ulu says.
“She’s safe Ulu, she’s out of the forest with her friends. You’ll see her again don’t worry.”
Abe’s heart swelled as confirmation of his daughter’s safety. And his wife always did have some sort of connection to find their kids no matter where they ran off.
“And you’ll be there…right?”
The fog suddenly clears, Ulu and Abe fall to the grassy ground.
The two could hear many voices coming their way, yet both couldn’t stop crying, couldn’t move as the eternal cold darkness, suddenly comes back that either hadn’t felt till many years ago.
On the sunny day their sun died.

!Ranpo with an s/o who prefers spicy snacks over sweets!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scenario:- Ranpo tries spicy snaccs!
Pairing:- Ranpo Edogawa x gn!reader
Genre:- fluff
Type:- oneshot/hc
Tumblr media
Honestly, one thing that brought you together was your love for snacks
Although you liked savoury and he liked sweet
It didnt really matter tho
At first~
Everyone knew that ranpo edogawa didnt share food, and they all soon learned that neither did you :’)
But the only exception to your rule seemed to be eachother
He was a bit reluctant to try your snacks, but seeing you enjoy them(the pure look of satisfaction and enjoyment on your face always made it obvious that you were eating) made him want to try them too!
So one fine day he suggested you both swap snacks
You looked at your spicy bites and then at his marshmallows, deciding it wouldn’t be the worst to switch over to sweet for a second to calm your taste buds, you agreed and the swap was made.
You started gobbling up his marshmallows and the switch from crunchy and spicy to soft and sweet definitely helped you,it almost balanced it out!(perfectly balanced;as all things should be!)
But ranpo....he was a little adamant to try yours.
Now you were the kind of person to keep eatin ur snacks even if your mouth was SCREAMING for relief.you just loved the flavour!
But um,ranpo didnt wanna go thru that so he hesitated, contemplating whether or not he should just swap back your bites for his mallows
You saw this and clarified that these one’s werent the rly spicy ones, they were mild at best.
And after hearing that he popped the first one into his mouth!
It was a stark contrast from his usual nom-ings(yes ik thats not a word it just sounded right!) but he welcomed the challenge!
After all, a master detective should be flexible, adaptable and able to withstand anything!
He took bite after bite, digging into the bag like a raccoon in a trashcan! And soon your bag was finished!
He tossed it aside and drank from his bottle of cream soda before looking back to you,who had done the same(finished the snacks i mean!)
“Soo...,” you began, “how were they??”
He thought for a second before replying, “a stark difference to be sure but a welcome one...although....i think I’ll stick to my sweets thank youuu very much~”
You laughed to yourself and shook your head
“Sure ranpo,go ahead”
And with that you each opened your next bag of snacks and dug in
While you were enjoying yours, you felt eyes watching you ,and sure enough when you looked at ranpo he was watching you.
“Want some??” You asked, shaking the bag in front of him.
He looked back to his bag, then to you, your bag and then back to his.
“Dont worry i wont take any of yours...” you said knowing he was wondering whether taking yours would mean hed have to give you some of his again.
But after Your clarification,he took a few pieces and popped em into his mouth
He uh quickly regretted not trying one first
These ones were significantly spicier than the one he’d had before and the effect it had on his tongue was causing him to chug his soda and the next one too
Soon once he felt better he cleared his throat and glared at you snack bag, clutching his to his chest and holding on for dear life
After a few seconds, he hissed out in a tone filled with the purest sense of betrayal, “NEVER AGAIN!” And then went back to practically inhaling his gummy bears
You laughed again and them resumed your snacking too, “dont worry popo,we’ll build up your spice tolerance!”
“NOOOOO THANK YOU.”
“Oh well.” You said with a shrug as you made a mental note to definitely make him build up his spice tolerance~(but not if he really doesnt wanna k?!🔪)

4, 10 or 17 for the ask game?
ask game
this ended up being extremely long so all of it is under cu
4. What's a word that makes you go absolutely feral?
tbh i have no clue. i love writing fluff and angst, but i fucking love fluff. good fluff, and by "good" i mean "fulfills a very specific set of requirements that makes my heart melt". i think some good candidates would be "cuddle" (with adjectives and description of character's emotions) and "(insert thing that means said softly here)". generally i tend to go crazy over specific sections of text more than single words... like, give me soft cute gay fluff written the way i like it and i will die of happiness.
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
i've never thought of this properly before. what would "haunted" mean? how would it work? i'd feel like it would mean that the work has left a big impact on me and how i do things. it "haunts" me because you will see echoes of it in my work, because i keep looking up to it as a role model unrealistically knowing that whatever i see is after editing, after betas and from someone with more experience, and i'm trying to get raw drafts up to that quality. so fun. anyways, works that have haunted me, in order:
Shadow of the Mind and Different Threads by Firehawk1100 on ffn and ao3. WoF. this was way back when i was writing broken draft 1, because his works were so long (to me back then). i wanted to make my work that long. yeah. then i got into warriors and tdp, and i started losing interest in WoF... so this ended.
the Exile AU by @/troutfur, @/kudossi and @/mallowstep. warriors. as you know utopia is based off this. it was a very important experience, because mallow's use of brackets echoes in my work, and so do the titles, and so does the method of using oneshots. probably one of my most important influences, just because. how much of what makes my writing style what it is came from here. there is only one other fic that reached this level. i thus find it slightly funny that mallow, who is one of the people that have influenced my writing incredibly, has me blocked. it's just a little bit funny
I Am Arthur Wellesley: An Iron Duke SI by Sarthak on alternatehistory.com. it actually didn't influence anything you've seen yet, but it haunts me. i keep thinking about it. it is dead, which i find infuriating. but it was the first AH story i read, and it basically told me how to write an SI fic, in the traditional sense. tdp si is influenced by this. actually you could put a lot of AH.com stories here but IAAW was the first i read, so i put it here. other good contenders are The American Dream by okmangeez and Purple Phoenix Reborn by Sersor.
finally, Warped Skies by @team-ion. in the flesh. DoP, as you know, was started literally because i read this and went "oh shit i want to make something like this". this is the other fic. a non-negligible portion of DoP's worldbuilding is directly taken from there. not a very significant portion, but one large enough that i can't hide it. the only reason the portion isn't bigger is because a) i actually need this to be original and b) i need to ask a lot of stupid questions like "how does primal dialga KGB work" and "what is the feasibility of manufacture of X in PMD world" and "can quadrupeds gain enough breath support to sing". but for me, this is THE pmd fic of all time (that's also because i havent read many others but shhh). it's beautiful. haven't read through the whole thing because it's still long as fuck, but it's beautiful. this is the other fic that made me insecure about word count again, but then i managed to make DoP's chapters three times as long as every other fic's through the sheer power of dialogue, so that got solved rather easily. it's always in the back of my mind because it's fucking good and i quite directly and blatantly based DoP off of it. also we're both on PMDWU and i'm a less effective version of him when it comes to being a writing demon. it's so fun.
that was long as fuck.
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
oh boy which one to choose. (spins the wheel) (yes i use a name wheel i have too many things to juggle shush)
tdp si. right. literally just started this, so... yeah. very much based off IAAW. chapter 1 (done, unedited) is just over 1k long, i think. but i dont care! this one's all about the POLITICAL SHENANIGANS and those are later on! >:D
so. stas is adopted by annika and neha. they are an absolute joy to write. imagine how i wrote zanrex, but different. yes, i love fluff. i already said that, i believe. they bring him around everywhere, which means this baby sits through council meetings and everything. of course, he's a baby, so he sleeps through most of them... but he gets through one whole meeting once, beating his body.
also stas is panicking slightly because he knows annika and neha are going to die at some point, and then he has a nine year timer until things go to shit, more or less. depends on how fast viren is able to convince harrow. i know butterfly effect but i actually need the show to happen ok? but right now he's 1 year old and very much wants to enjoy himself while he can.
(what he doesnt know is that annika and neha will die when he's 4)

“There’s a reason I called you all here today.”
The room was dark and Giovanni sat in shadow. He could see the faces of the other four at the table, and they could see him, but he was certain they couldn’t make out his face. Unlike the rest of these idiots, he had rarely made the mistake of being seen in public; his identity wasn’t yet compromised, and it wasn’t about to ruin that today.
“It had better be a good one, for me to be seen with this idiot,” Archie growled, turning his head sharply to look at Maxie. “You know that Water Pokémon are the most plentiful variety of Pokémon, right?”
Maxie didn’t deign to look at Archie. “Where would you be sitting right now if the world were covered with water?”
“On my boat!”
“That’s enough,” Giovanni said firmly. He’d called this specific group of people together because of a single common bond, but perhaps that had been a miscalculation. If it was going to be like this—this being what he imagined wrangling preschoolers to be—then maybe he should have gone with a more loyal group. Less powerful and driven, but easy to control. It would have been safer.
“What’s the reason, Rocket?” Ghetsis asked.
He also hadn’t given any of them his name. They all knew of Team Rocket at this point, thanks to Jessie and James—the real impetus for this meeting—and just being the leader of the organization provided enough clout to this crew without having to give up his anonymity.
“We all have one thing in common,” Giovanni stated as the beginning of his planned speech. “Our plans have been foiled by this young man.”
He presented a photo of a one Ash Ketchum, the same ID photo that had been used in his League competition in Kalos. His image was enough to draw a reaction out of all of the men at the table.
“That damned kid!”
“Ah, of course.”
“I don’t know how he did it.”
The one not to respond was Cyrus, who hadn’t uttered a word since he arrived. However, Giovanni had a careful eye on all the men, and he noticed tension in Cyrus’ shoulders as he heaved a silent breath.
“My team has been trying to catch a single Pokémon of his for years,” Giovanni said, unable completely to tamper his annoyance. It was all he could do not to seethe. “And they have never succeeded.”
Archie smacked the table. “That Pikachu!”
Giovanni didn’t bother responding. “While the boy and his Pikachu are powerful in their own right, there’s one thing that lifts him up.”
“His companions.”
The answer came from Cyrus. Giovanni was a little irritated at his speech having been interrupted, but he continued on as if unfazed. “Yes. Without his friends—his backup—he would not be able to pull of the feats he did against any of our teams. And with this boy’s unique proficiency at showing up right where our plans are meant to take place, taking his strength out of the equation should leave a clear road ahead for all of us to follow through with our plans.”
“Even if our plans are counter to each other?” Maxie asked.
Giovanni waved him away. “That will be something for you both to work out. I only intend to provide the path. You can do with it what you will.”
“So what’s the plan?” Ghetsis asked.
Giovanni leaned forward, his arms going into the light as he placed his elbows on the table and steepled his hands.
“Well…”
*     *     *
It was when Ash arrived in the Melemele Island Pokémon Center that he heard.
He had already been on the island for a couple of days before hitting the Pokémon Center. He and his mom were just visiting Alola, thanks to Mimey winning a contest, but today was the day that he’d finally had a friendly Pokémon Battle. Pikachu hadn’t been injured, but it couldn’t hurt to stop in and give him a check-up anyway.
“Are you Ash Ketchum?”
Ash hadn’t even managed to hand Pikachu over to Nurse Joy before she was asking him, and he could only look on quizzically as he answered, “Yeah, that’s me.”
“You received a phone call from a Brock Slate yesterday morning. He said you should call him back as soon as you can.”
“Are you sure he didn’t want you to call him back?”
As much as Ash enjoyed receiving phone calls from Brock, this wouldn’t be the first time that the whole game of telephone tag devolved into more sad attempts from his friend to hit on one of the many Nurse Joys they communicated through.
This Nurse Joy, however, was confused. “Um, no? He said it was urgent, though, so I suggest you call him back promptly. Why don’t I take your Pokémon and you can make the call while we’re in the back?”
“Sounds good.”
Pikachu went willingly from Ash’s shoulder into Nurse Joy’s arms and, without any other Pokémon on him to be healed, Ash went to the video phones. He was no whiz with numbers, but, by now, Brock’s uni number was a familiar one. He dialed the digits and didn’t have to wait long before Brock picked up. His screen was already on and Ash could see his friend’s face turn quickly from being blank to one of urgency.
“Ash? Thank goodness you got my message.”
“Well, thanks for taking the time away from ogling Nurse Joy to leave it.”
“Ash. This is serious.”
Ash had never heard is friend use that tone of voice before. Of course they’d been in dire situations in the past, but something about the gravity in his voice, the clenching of his jaw, and the wildness of his eyes scared Ash straight. He was listening.
“What is it?”
“Misty’s missing.”
*     *     *
Ash ran out of the Pokémon Center with no more sense of a plan than he had to get moving.
Misty was missing. Her sisters had realized it sometime the day before at which point Misty couldn’t have been gone for more than a few hours. But she was definitely gone and there were no leads on where she might be or who might have taken her.
It was assumed that she’d been kidnapped. The Cerulean Gym had never invested in security cameras—though they certainly would be now, even though it was all but closing the barn door after the Taurus had all left—so someone easily could have slipped in, incapacitated her somehow, and made their way out with her, providing no one had been around. Which, it appeared, no one had been.
He hadn’t made it ten feet out the front door before his mom came out of nowhere, grabbing the back of his collar, and stopping him in his tracks.
Ash choked a little—his collar had dug in just under his Adam’s apple—and wheezed as his mom stepped in front of him with a stern look.
“Just where do you think you’re going, mister?”
“Misty’s been kidnapped!” he blurted out. “I have to save her!”
“Is that true?” Delia asked, her reaction unchanging despite the, in Ash’s opinion, world-changing information. “Then tell me: where’s Pikachu?”
Ash’s hand flew to his shoulder where, sure enough, Pikachu was not. He suddenly realized that, in his haste, he’d left Pikachu with Nurse Joy. Immediately, Ash turned around to run back into the Pokémon Center when, again, his mom pinched his collar.
Stopped once again, Ash batted his mom’s hand away and coughed a little. “Mom! What are you doing?”
“What are you doing, young man?” Delia asked. “How do you think you can help Misty right now?”
Truth be told, he hadn’t thought that far. Brock hadn’t provided him with enough information to go off of, and it hadn’t seemed as though the other boy had concocted any plan himself as of yet. But that didn’t stop Ash from thinking on the fly. “I just need to get to Kanto. She’s probably in Kanto, right? Then I can start looking for her and battle whoever did this!”
“That is exactly what you won’t be doing, mister. You have no idea where she is and, might I remind you, you have no way of getting back to Kanto right now. And, might I remind you, you have school. In about ten minutes. Principal Oak is expecting you.”
“School can wait!” Ash exclaimed. “My best friend has been kidnapped!”
“And there’s nothing you can do.” Finally, his mom’s expression melted from one of austerity to tenderness. “I really am sorry about Misty, and I hope to heaven she’s okay. But, Ashy, you have to understand that you being in Kanto or not isn’t going to do anything for her. I know you’re used to playing a heroic role in these things but, for once, can you just do a favor to your mom and go to school like a normal boy and saving the heroism for the professionals?”
No, Ash wanted to say. No, no, no, no. Misty needed his help. She rarely had before, and he wanted to be there in her time of need. But, unfortunately, he was once again in a totally different region from her, unable to give her anything other than his thoughts and prayers.
He wasn’t going to say yes. He couldn’t find it in him to do that, even for his mom. But he did look her in the eye and say the simplest truth he could: “I’m going to get Pikachu.”
*      *     *
In the five years Ash had gone to school, he’d never particularly liked it. He didn’t totally remember the details of it at this point, since it had been years since he’d spent regular time in a classroom, but he had vague memories of being really bored and getting in trouble for being distracted. He wouldn’t do well and then his mom would have to meet with his teacher and then she’d be sad. He hadn’t liked any of that. The only reasons he’d agreed to go to this school in Alola was because, 1.) Professor Oak had told him that Principal Oak would love to have him, and Ash wouldn’t want to refuse Professor Oak and 2.) it was called The Pokémon School. At the time, that had been enough for him.
Now, though, he wasn’t sure he would have been willing to sit at a desk even if the school had been called ‘The Pokémon School that Guarantees all who Enter Shall be Pokémon Masters and We’re just Going to Talk About Pokémon Except for When We’re Training with Them.’ Though that did sound really cool.
His mother had walked him to the classroom, probably knowing that he would have been late otherwise. Or made a run for it. Truly, he hadn’t ruled that latter option out yet. But, so far, he was the second person there, even though class was set to start in a couple minutes. The only other person was a girl wearing all white and she’d been furiously writing in a notebook since he’d arrived.
But as his leg bounced up and down like a jackhammer and Pikachu looked up at him from the desk with a worried expression, Ash knew he was bound to burst before class started. So, with a somewhat panicked tone, he shouted, “Hey! What’s your name?”
The girl turned around, startled. Ash wasn’t even sure she’d noticed that he was there until that moment. He put on a forced smile, hoping that he wasn’t scaring the girl. She did look a little uneasy.
“Oh—I’m Lillie.”
“I’m Ash! Nice to meet’cha!”
Lillie smiled—a timid one, but a smile nevertheless—and said, “Hi, Ash. Are you new?”
“Nah, I’m just here on vacation. Just coming to class today because I’m friends with Professor Oak and then I have to head back to Kanto.”
“That’s very interesting,” Lillie said. “It’s a shame you can’t stay longer.”
“Well, I was gonna,” Ash said. “But my friend, Misty has been kidnapped and I need to get home as soon as possible to rescue her.”
“Oh, dear!” Lillie’s hand flew up to her mouth and her eyes went incredibly wide. Her eyes were green, like Misty’s, but the tone was different. Misty’s had flecks of blue, while this girl’s were more golden. Totally different, really. “Did you say kidnapped?”
“That’s right.” Ash’s smile grew more forced and his leg was bouncing so much it was thumping his desk. Really, it was causing a great racket, and Pikachu was bouncing around on it a little. “And no one has any idea where she is.”
“That’s terrible!”
Just then, the rest of the class came trickling in. Two more girls and two boys, all of whom were chatting cheerfully, seemingly happy to be at school. Ash couldn’t relate.
Eyes immediately turned to him, as he stood out as an odd fixture in their small class. The girl with the long green hair smiled—a real one, not like his or Lillie’s—and said, “Alola! What’s your name?”
“His name is Ash and his friend has been kidnapped!”
Lillie blurted the words out and then covered her mouth with both hands, looking wildly between Ash and the green-haired girl.
“Is that true?” A boy with dark skin and wasn’t wearing a shirt took a step toward Ash, the question seemingly directed at him instead of Lillie.
Ash nodded, his eyes all crazy again as his mouth seemed stuck in a phony-bologna smile. “Yup. Found out today.”
“That’s just terrible,” the blue-haired girl said quietly. “You must feel awful.”
“Yeah, my mom says there’s nothing I can do about it.” He still didn’t believe that for a second, though. There was always an action to take. At the very least, he could go to Kanto. That would be a start.
“Of course you can’t,” the dark-skinned boy. “That should be left to the professionals.”
Ash grunted and turned away. “You sound just like my mom.”
The short boy looked at the other boy with wide eyes. “You sound just like mine too!”
“Well, I think Ash is right!” the green-haired girl said, punching a fist into her other hand. “His friend needs help—of course he should at least try!”
Just then, the professor came in. He was wearing a lab coat with no shirt underneath and a baseball cap. He wasn’t like any teacher Ash had ever seen before.
“Ah, I see everyone’s met our visitor for the day. Class, meet Ash Ketchum. Ash, I’m Professor Kukui. Everyone else, please introduce yourselves.”
Mallow, Lana, Kiawe, and Sophocles. And, of course, Lillie. Now Ash had a name for every face.
“Professor?” Sophocles asked, raising his hand before the Professor could begin his lesson. “Ash’s friend was kidnapped!”
Professor Kukui’s eyes widened. “Really, now? That’s terrible.”
“It’s the truth!” Mallow said, standing up. “And we want to help!”
The professor frowned. “I wish we could. But I think the best thing we can do for Ash is to take his mind off of it and try and distract him. So let’s get on with the lesson.”
Mallow sat down, looking defeated. She turned back in her chair to look at Ash with sad eyes. She shrugged and gave him an expression that said, I tried.

It was the next day, and he was still in Alola, when Ash learned of another call he’d received. He’d been hoping for one—that’s why he’d gone to the Pokémon Center in the first place; he’d wanted to hear if there had been any updates. However, this time the message was from Daisy, not Brock, and it turned out it was for the worst reason.
“Brock’s gone too?” Ash exclaimed, disbelief flooding him as Daisy looked at him tearfully.
“Yeah,” she said with a nod. “The police told us this morning.”
“Why did they tell you?”
“They thought it could be related. Misty’s a Gym Leader and Brock used to be one.”
Ash shook his head. “No, then they would have taken Forrest, not Brock. That can’t be it.”
Daisy shrugged. “Well, we still don’t have anything else to go on.”
Ash narrowed his eyes, thinking as hard as he could. “Yeah, but we will.”
*     *     *
In Ash’s experience, all that was needed for ideas to come about was for more than one head to put themselves together. Right now he was one head. But very shortly, he would have more.
Ash ran the way to the Pokémon school. Against all odds, he was there for a second day. Well, maybe not all odds. It was what his mom had intended after all. But it sure hadn’t been his plan. Unlike the day before, however, he arrived in the classroom—early, mind you—and everyone else was already there.
“Ash!” Mallow exclaimed. “We were wondering if you’d be here!”
“We thought you’d be in Kanto by now,” Sophocles added.
Ash shook his head, panting as he tried to catch his breath. “My mom still won’t let me go. We’d have to buy new plane tickets and I don’t really have any other way of getting there.”
“Well, we’re glad you’re back,” Lana said quietly.
“Thanks, I’m glad to see all of you too, because our problems just got a lot bigger.”
“Our problems?” Kiawe asked. But Ash just barreled on.
“Another one of my friends has been kidnapped. He used to be the Gym Leader of the Pewter City Gym in Kanto.”
There were gasps around the room. The only one who stayed silent was Kiawe, though his eyes did widen.
“Ash, I’m so sorry!” Mallow cried.
“I wanted to ask your guys’ advice,” Ash said whilst throwing Mallow a grateful look. “These have to be related, right? One right after the other like that? So that has to be a clue. But I don’t know what it might mean.”
“Okay, let’s get the facts,” Lillie said. “They’re both in Kanto. Misty—Misty, right?—Misty is a Gym Leader, Brock used to be one. Umm…”
“They’re both good friends of yours, Ash?” Mallow asked.
“The best!”
“Like, actual best friends?”
Ash didn’t know what Mallow was getting at. He’d definitely used the term best friend before, but he’d never thought about his friends on a sliding scale before. Who might be ranked below or above another one. He just had a lot of friends!
“They both traveled with me for years. Sometimes all three of us, sometimes one of them and other people. But all three of us are, like, really, really, super good friends.”
“Do you have any enemies?”
That had Ash even more confused. He immediately started to say no. After all, most people he met he thought of as friends. But then he remembered all the bad things that had happened over the years. How many bad guys he’d met. Maybe Mallow was onto something.
“I guess I do.”
“Really?” Mallow actually looked surprised to hear the answer. “Powerful ones?”
Ash nodded. “Yeah, actually.”
“Oh my gosh!” she gasped. “Ash! That’s the clue! The clue is you!”
“Then I know what we need to do!” Sophocles said. “We need to give tracking devices to all your close friends, then we’ll see who’s taken next and where they go!”
“Sophocles, that’s ridiculous,” Kiawe said.
Ash, on the other hand, was intrigued. “How would we do that?”
“Well, I just need to whip up some small tracking devices—very common technology nowadays. And then we just need to ship them to your friends. How many do you think we’ll need?”
“Er…”
Ash had a lot of friends. Like, a lot. But he didn’t think he could ask Sophocles for the dozens and dozens of trackers that he would need for all of his friends. He had to narrow it down.
Lana suggested he think about his best friends. And while he still didn’t know how to separate those categories, he did know that Misty and Brock were two of his traveling companions. Two people that he’d been seen together with often. An innumerable amount of times. That was probably the place to start.
So that meant May, Max, Dawn, Iris, Cilan, Serena, Clemont, Bonnie…yeah, better stop there.
“Eight,” he answered definitively—before he could rethink it and get all tangled up. “But they live all over the world.”
“Hmm.” Sophocles put a finger to his chin. “Kiawe, think your Charizard could handle that?”
“What‽” Kiawe asked, nearly shrieking. “Of course not! In one day? No, Sophocles, it’s not possible.”
Sophocles threw his hands up. “What? I was just wondering!”
Then Lillie piped up. “I might be able to help.”
Everyone turned to look at her. Ash had noticed it the day before, but she was the only one of them who didn’t have a Pokémon out. For once, he wasn’t the strange one by allowing Pikachu out of his PokéBall all the time—lots of people in Alola seemed to do it. But not Lillie. He wasn’t even sure that she had any Pokémon, so he wondered what she intended to offer. And he wasn’t alone in that thought.
“What are you talking about, Lillie?” Mallow asked.
Cryptically, Lillie answered, “You don’t know my mother.”
*     *     *
The hard part, it turned out, was getting in touch with all of his friends. Fortunately, unlike him, most of his friends had PokéNavs and the like so they could receive calls remotely. Especially after he called them three and four times. They were bound to pick up then.
He did get a hold of each of them eventually, but it did take some time. And then there was the matter of specifically locating them for Lusamine—that was Lillie’s mother—to ship each of these trackers that Sophocles was putting together for each of them. Some were easy, like Cilan, who was at his Gym. Others were harder, like Dawn who was traveling through the middle of even she didn’t know where in Kalos.
But, luckily, all of his friends believed him when he told them that they might be in danger. Or if they didn’t directly believe him, they were willing to go along with it.
Then he just had to wait as slowly, one by one, they all appeared as little dots on Sophocles’ tracking device. After that, it was just a matter of waiting.
It was the middle of the night when Ash received a phone call—Sophocles had set him up with a longish-distance walkie-talkie of sorts—saying that one of the dots was on the move. Of course, that shouldn’t have been happening; all of his friends had already settled down to sleep for the night. So that meant that someone was being taken. And that their hypothesis was right.
“Who is it?” Ash asked groggily, still half-asleep.
“Clemont.”
*     *     *
When Ash made it to the Pokémon School—in the middle of the night with nothing more than a note for his mother—he was surprised to find everyone already there waiting for him. Everyone meaning Sophocles, Lillie, Mallow, Lana, and even Kiawe, though the latter of those looked very tired and unhappy. Mallow must have noticed Ash’s lingering gaze on Kiawe and said, “He flew here from Akala Island!”
Now, Ash had no idea where Akala Island was, but he did know that this was Melemele Island. An entirely different island must have meant that it was pretty far away. He wouldn’t have thought that Kiawe would have made a trip like that just for this. Just for him.
“Thanks, Kiawe,” Ash said.
Kiawe, for his part, shrugged. “Whoever’s doing this can’t get away with it. If I can help bring them down, then why wouldn’t I?”
“So what do we do now?” Lana asked, looking to Ash. Lillie, however, is the one who spoke up.
“Um, my mom actually thought of something.”
Hesitantly, Lillie pressed a button on the wall—one that Ash hadn’t noticed before—and a part of the wall opened like an elevator door. Lillie stepped inside with a shy smile and gestured everyone follow.
“Wow, how did your mom do this, Lillie?”
“She has a lot of resources.”
The next thing they knew, the group of humans—and their Pokémon—were being shot down a chute and into a chamber that held a Flygon, Altaria, Charizard, Garchomp, Metang, and Dragonair, all saddled up and ready to go.
“Woah, are these for us to ride?” Ash asked, his eyes wide and sparkling.
“Yes…Alolan ride Pokémon…”
Lillie’s voice was suddenly halting, nervous. She looked ahead of her—at the Altaria—and her face seemed even paler than usual.
“Lillie’s afraid of touching Pokémon,” Mallow explained, a hand on her friend’s shoulder. Lillie, however, shook it off.
“No, I can do it!” Lillie shouted, clenching her hands in front of her. “I just need to…close my eyes.”
She did exactly that and held a hand out. “Mallow, lead me there, please.”
An eyebrow arched, Mallow took hold of Lillie’s hand and began to lead her towards Altaria. Lillie was holding her breath, and her brows were furrowed to the point that they were nearly touching. But, nevertheless, she climbed atop Altaria, and let out a breath.
“It’s just a chair, it’s just a chair,” Lillie murmured to herself as she took hold of the handlebars. She wasn’t actually touching Altaria, so hopefully she would be fine.
Barely opening one eye, she looked back at the rest of the group, who were all still standing, watching her.
“Well? What are you waiting for‽”
*     *     *
Clemont’s dot had stopped moving on Sophocles’ map by the time they’d taken off, so everyone felt comfortable assuming that that’s where he was being held captive. Surprisingly, it wasn’t in Kalos, but off the coast of Kanto, which was fantastic, because that meant that Ash and his new friends didn’t even have to spend an hour in the air before touching down near where Clemont was meant to be.
“The dot is gone!” Sophocles exclaimed once they’d landed. “I don’t understand it!”
“But is this the spot, Sophocles?” Mallow asked.
Sophocles nodded his head vigorously. “This is the last place the dot was, and it moved quickly to get here. He must have been on a plane or something. But now it’s disappeared!”
“It’s still all we have to go on,”
“This is the spot,” Sophocles said once they all had landed. He should be somewhere around here.
Kanto’s east coast had many tiny islands, most of which held nothing more than a lot of sand. And the area where the group now stood with all their Pokémon was no different. The ocean was pockmarked with spots of sand, but there were no buildings around. Nowhere that a person might be hidden. They’d hit a dead end.
But not according to Lana.
“I know what we should do! Popplio, make a balloon!”
Ash watched as out of Popplio’s nose came a bubble, small at first, then growing, growing, growing until it was about a foot wide. Then, Lana stuck her head in it, without popping it, and dove into the water. She didn’t come back up, but Popplio started right away making another balloon.
“Oh! We’re supposed to dive underwater and see if they’re being held there!” Ash exclaimed. “Popplio, give me a balloon!”
Ash took the next one and popped it on his head—with Popplio making another small one for Pikachu—before following Lana under the water. With the balloon on his head, he could breathe and keep his eyes open. The balloon made it look like he was seeing the world from inside a fishbowl, but at least his eyes didn’t sting.
Then, all of a sudden, Lana looked back at Ash and pointed eagerly forward, suddenly swimming much quicker while Ash struggled to keep up. He realized that she was swimming into an underwater cove and followed her into it. It was totally dark. The cove must have been covered at the top, because very quickly there was no light to speak of at all. Then, all of a sudden, his bubble burst, and his head was above water.
Despite having been able to breathe, Ash gasped at the sudden fresh flow of oxygen, and he heard Lana breathing heavily next to him. Pikachu had climbed to the top of his head and was shaking the water out of his fur.
“Pikachu, can you make a little electricity so we can see?” he whispered. “But be careful of all the water.”
Pikachu obliged, only sparking a little at his cheeks, but suddenly the whole chamber lit up with flickering light, like Pikachu was holding a candle in his hands. And in front of him, he saw Misty, Brock, and Clemont, partially submerged, gagged, and seemingly chained to the wall.
All of them let out muffled shouts when they saw Ash in front of them. Ash couldn’t swim quick enough to get to his friends and rip their gags off. Lana was right behind him to do the same.
“Ash!” Misty exclaimed after Ash took her gag off. “I can’t believe you’re here!”
“Of course I am,” Ash said. “I wanted to save you right away, but I needed help first.”
“That’s okay,” she said. “I’m just glad you came.”
“Clemont, Brock!” Ash exclaimed, clapping each of his other friends on the shoulder. “I’m so happy you’re all in the same spot!”
“Us too, Ash,” Brock said, “Thanks for the rescue.”
And as he looked around, he realized that—much like Mallow had surmised—there were many other spots along the wall where it looked like more people were meant to be held. More chains in place, just ready to lock another of his friends up.
“What did they do to you?” Ash asked Misty.
“It’s not as bad as it looks,” Misty answered with a shake of her head. “There’s a tube in the rock to let oxygen in from outside, and they do feed us and stuff. I think they’ve been keeping us here while they figure out what to do with us or something.”
“Have you seen your captors?”
That question came from Lana, and Clemont is the one who answered.
“No, it’s been pitch black. They must have night vision goggles or something in order to see us.”
Ash reached behind Misty to feel the metal chains that were keeping her hands in place. They were just like any other metal chains he’d ever seen. And there wasn’t much that either he or Pikachu could do about it.
“Ash,” Lana said. “If we wanna get them out, we’re gonna have to go back above ground.”
Ash looked back at Misty, has hand falling from her chains to her arm. He didn’t want to leave his friends. Not just after he’d found them, and not in this condition. But the quicker he got them out of there the better. He squeezed Misty’s arm.
“We’ll get you out of here in two shakes.”
*     *     *
It was quite the group effort to get Misty, Brock, and Clemont out of the cave. As Ash and Lana surfaced—as quickly as possible, as they no longer had Popplio’s bubbles on their side to help with breathing—Lana was the one who kept track of which ‘island’ the group was being kept under. And on which side of the rock they were all being held. Then all it took was the sacrifice of Kiawe touching one of his Turtonator’s spikes. Little did Ash know that that would trigger a huge explosion, creating a crater in the rock. Then Misty, Brock, and Clemont were accessible from the outside.
Ash then talked everyone through his tried and true method of breaking through metal. Turtonator was used to heat up the chains, Popplio cooled them down with some water, then Pikachu’s Iron Tail was all it took to free his three friends.
They would have been home free. If a helicopter had not appeared at just that moment.
Everyone stood back, holding their hands in front of their faces as the helicopter grew airbags on its landing skis and landed on the water. Then, out stepped a shouting man.
“How‽ How did you do it yet again?”
“Giovanni!” Ash, Misty, and Brock all shouted.
“Yes, apparently anonymity is no longer on my side,” Giovanni muttered to himself. Then he continued, “How have you thwarted my plans yet again? I had you right where I wanted you!”
“Plans?” Ash asked with a furrowed brow. “Why would you be kidnapping my friends? I thought you only stole Pokémon. And my friends aren’t Pokémon.”
“I wasn’t stealing your friends,” Giovanni snapped, his voice sharp. “I was separating them from you so that you were weak. But it seems you’ve made a whole host of new ones instead.”
Ash looked behind him at Lana, Mallow, Kiawe, Sophocles, and Lillie. They were all his friends now. Of course they were.
“You’re right,” Ash said simply. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without them. Mallow is the one who figured out what was going on, Lillie and Sophocles gave us the materials to track my friends and bring us here, and Lana and Kiawe helped he save them. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of that on my own.”
“But you made them so quickly! You’ve been in Alola for three days!”
Ash was a little concerned how Giovanni knew that about him. But before he could voice that, Misty spoke up for him, grabbing his hand.
“It’s because Ash is the most incredible, unique person that any of us know. If his new friends haven’t realized that yet, then they soon will, because everyone who meets Ash Ketchum walks away knowing that, right?”
Clemont was quick to answer. “Ash has inspired me in a way that no one else ever has. Traveling with him is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And it doesn’t matter how many more times I’m kidnapped for me to keep thinking that! …But please don’t.”
Misty nodded. “Exactly right. Me and him have never met, but we both think exactly the same about Ash. So you can isolate him and challenge him and try to stop him as many times as you want, but in the end, he will always rally for his friends, and they’ll always come for him. You lose, Giovanni, so call it quits.”
Giovanni stared between her and Ash for a few long seconds. Then he turned around dramatically and headed back into his helicopter before shouting, “This is not the end of Team Rainbow Rocket!
After the helicopter flew into the distance and its sound dissipated, Ash doubled over in laughter. “Team Rainbow Rocket? What happened to plain old Team Rocket?”
“Are they trying to queerbait us?” Mallow asked, befuddled.
Misty shook her head, then turned back to Ash. “Really, Ash. Thanks for saving us.”
“Thanks for standing up for me, Mist. I didn’t know you had all those nice things to say about me.”
Misty blushed. “Yeah, well…” She trailed off, turning away towards land. “How are we going to get home?”
“You could take our ride Pokémon?” Lillie offered hesitantly. “Some of us can ride two to a Pokémon.”
“That’ll work for these two,” Clemont said, thumbing over at Brock and Misty, “But I think I’m going to need a plane.”
Lillie nodded. “We can do that too.”
*     *     *
Ash hadn’t put together that Lillie was rich until the group made their first stop at the nearest airport and she put down a card to pay for Clemont’s plane. Of course, Clemont insisted he pay, but there was one thing Lillie had that Clemont just didn’t and that was speed. She paid for the last minute flight in full before Clemont even realized what had happened.
Saying goodbye to a good friend, even when you hadn’t been expecting to see them, was quite hard. Ash was very practiced at goodbyes, but most of the time it didn’t make them easier. Everyone stood back while he and Clemont exchanged their farewells and Ash couldn’t help but apologize a couple more times for Clemont’s brief kidnapping. Then it was off to Cerulean City.
This time Brock was by his side as Ash said goodbye.
“I’m really sorry, Misty,” Ash said for the umpteenth time as he stood in front of the door to the Cerulean Gym.
“It’s okay,” she reassured him. “Even if this kind of thing happened every day, I would take it if it were the trade off for being your friend.”
“You’re just saying that,” Ash said, his eyes looking down towards his shoes.
“Nah.” That was Brock clapping him on the back. “We all would. It’s quite the deal for being friends with Ash Ketchum.”
Ash swallowed, his throat suddenly tight. “Thanks, guys.”
“Well,” Misty said after a moment, “you’d better be getting Brock off to Pewter City.”
Ash hesitated. It was so hard to say goodbye. “Guess so.”
Another beat. “Okay, then,” Misty said.
“It’ll be dark by the time we get back to Alola at this rate,” Kiawe said, cutting in. “And no one’s parents knows where we are except Lillie’s.”
Lillie tentatively raised a finger. “Kind of.”
“Right,” Misty agreed, her face suddenly flushed. Then, she quickly leaned in and gave Ash a peck on the cheek and ran to her front door with a wave. “I can’t thank you all enough! Bye-bye now!”
And then she was gone.
“Did that…” Brock started, staring at Ash, “did that just happen?”
“Aw, how cute!” Mallow exclaimed.
“She likes you!” Lana agreed.
“What‽” Ash shouted.
“You know, I’ve always suspected…” Brock mused, his thumb and forefinger to his chin.
“Even that blond guy seemed to like you a little bit,” Kiawe added.
“What‽” Ash was staring back and forth between all of them, unable to process what everyone seemed to be saying. “What? She was just…they’re grateful that…to all of us!”
“I think he just needs some time to accept it,” Lana said.
“That might be it,” Brock agreed.
“No, I don’t!”
“Fine, Ash,” Brock said, swinging an arm over his shoulders. “We agree with you. But the seed is planted. This conversation is not over.”
“But—”
“Oh, it’s over for the next long while,” Brock continued. “But it’ll come back. Just wait.”
Ash didn’t have anything more to say. Whatever arguments were still sitting on the tip of his tongue were falling away. He was outnumbered here. And while Ash wasn’t one to give up a challenge, this wasn’t one he was interested in playing with anymore. Brock was shelving it. That was enough. For now.
“So, this is what it’s like to be Ash’s friend…” Sophocles mused. “Interesting. I’m excited for it!”
“No, it’s—”
“Yes, it is,” Brock cut Ash off. “And like Misty said, none of us would have it any other way. You all are in for one heck of a ride.”
“Oh, we’re friends now?” Kiawe asked, his voice dry.
“Of course we are!” Mallow exclaimed. “You can’t go through something like this and not be friends!”
Mallow was right. There was something about surviving something together. Being saved by someone, or being the person doing the saving. It linked you in a way that other people didn’t understand. Ash and his friends knew that better than anyone.
“Ash is friends with everyone,” Brock stated, cutting through the static. “Legitimately everyone.”
He’d been saved so many times. And he’d done the saving just as many. All of his friends were special. And he had a lot of friends. So many friends. Just friends.
Right?
The seed was planted.
Pikachu tapped Ash from his place on Ash’s shoulder, bringing him back to the world. Ash blinked a few times and shook it off. He didn’t even know what he was thinking about. So, with a bright grin on his face, happy to have five brand new friends—and to have saved the day yet again—he said, “Off to Pewter and then back to Alola before my mom kills me!”
*     *     *
Meanwhile…
Giovanni was back in the room where he’d called the first meeting, in front of the failures he’d called partners, feeling humiliated yet again at the hands of a child.
“Foiled again!” he growled. “We didn’t account for the fact that he would make a whole posse of new friends in a matter of days.”
“If I may,” Cyrus spoke up, raising one finger and surprising everyone by speaking first. “Perhaps we should focus on the redheaded girl. She and the boy seem to have a particularly strong connection.”
“How do you know that?” Archie blurted out, for he sure hadn’t seen anything of the sort.
“I spied on their glorious return mission whilst our fearless leader was headed home on a private helicopter with his tail between his legs.”
It was all Giovanni could do not to spit with rage. Nevertheless, he had to admit, “Yes, there might be something there. Perhaps we were too ambitious, thinking we could cut out all of his closest, powerful friends…but if we focus our efforts on one…”
“Why her and not the spiky-haired boy that the majority of us saw travel with the boy for years?” Maxie asked.
“Because, he’s not the boy’s weak point,” Giovanni mused. “There’s always a weak point.”
“But no kidnapping this time,” Ghetsis raised. After all, it hadn’t gone well this time around.
“No kidnapping,” Giovanni declared. “At least not as the prime maneuver. But we’ll think of something. She’s important to the boy and that’s our way in.”
He steepled his fingers together, his face just barely catching the light.
“Team Rainbow Rocket is back in business.”

hi matt!! sorry for the dredfully overwhemlming amount of asks, but i just wanna ask- any tips 4 beginner ficwriters? i'm working on a songfic oneshot ("are you satisfied?" + cinderpelt) and just wanted some tips 4 a beginner writer
you're not overwhelming me! fear not. i try to say when things bother me so that like. there's no lack of clarity. unless i ask you to stop doing something, it's fine.
on that note: i prefer matthew over matt. mateo and mallow are also good.
(note to said note: this is by no means a big deal so don't fret about it.)
aanyway
some disclaimers: i am not a published writer or anything, this advice is just advice that works for me so take what works for you and ignore the rest, and i'm giving advice wrt writing fic, which does have its own genre quirks that means this isn't necessarily broadly applicable. but some of it is.
kay first piece of advice: if you're not having fun, don't do it. this is a hobby, being good at it is not required. if getting better makes you happy, then by all means, strive for improvement. but if you stop having fun, stop.
everything else under a cut.
second: there's no shortcut. i've been writing since i could hold a pen, and writing with concentrated effort for over a decade. i had a shelf full of notebooks. i try to hit at LEAST a thousand words a day, and i'm usually writing about three thousand.
writing is hard. it's the kind of hard i enjoy, but it's hard. i derive satisfaction out of it, but it is work.
third: wrt that point, getting better at writing requires working on your writing. that might sound obvious, but there are all sorts of writing Exercises which are designed to help you get better at doing things. i've got a HUGE library of them and i'm always happy to share.
fourth: don't compare yourself to others. it's a little cliche, but...really, it's best to avoid. there are certainly ways to do this that are helpful, but i...think it's best for especially beginning writers to avoid doing that. it's hard to see the years of experience that lead up to being a Good Writer, and comparing yourself when you're starting out is just...not helpful.
fifth: being out of character is a lie. this is pretty warriors specific but like. most of these characters don't have very consistent characterization. be in character for yourself, make sure they resemble canon characters, and don't stress about it.
sixth: make a plan. i'll leave what that means and how you do it up to you, but even if your plan is a scribbled sentence, make one.
i also want to add that the plot might not be in the physical actions of characters. this is something i had to figure out for myself, but a story can just be driven by emotions, with very little happening. now, you definitely have to be careful with this, because anything longer than a couple thousand words usually needs a decent amount of Physical Plot, but most of my chapter level outlines focus on emotions.
anyway there's a million ways to do this but everyone i know does something, even the ones who claim to do nothing.
seventh: it's okay if you feel like you need an audience. for me, the Point of writing is to share it with people. "writing for myself" for me REQUIRES i share things and publish them. there's no such thing as a story i write for only my eyes.
and related, but that audience doesn't have to be the whole internet. i've been recently sharing quite a lot of things just among my friends, and it's been Really Good for my writing and for my...i don't want to say mental health, bc that implies not doing that wasn't healthy, but it did just...make me feel good.
obviously not everyone has that opportunity but i just wanted to throw these two ideas together because they work in concert.
eighth: write a lot. what it's important.
ninth: tag your works appropriately. what that means is a whole other topic i'm not really qualified to get into but. seriously. as someone who was raised in ffn, ao3 is a GOD SEND and y'all should appreciate it. overall, tagging culture on ao3 is good, but just...remember to tag. i'm not a huge fan of tumblr style tags on ao3 but i do have a few, such as "another au i give u 0 context for."
tenth: nothing is permanent. write a lot, post fast, don't be afraid to edit. p sure i'm going to b making mosskit they/them in hitds bc vox's got me on it. there's lots of my works with edit notes, but that's because i'm a programmer who was taught to always explain my edits.
you don't have to do that.
anyway the point is if you don't like something, change it! it's your writing.
i do recommend not deleting things, because i feel it's unproductive, but if you really hate having something up, delete it!
have a good time.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: ahn yujin was a name you didn't want to hear ever since your break up three months ago. sure, it hurt at first, but now you were okay, you were over her. until she gave you a letter.
genre: angsty fluff
includes: panic attacks (happens twice), parties, mentions of alcohol (reader doesn't drink) and making out, all of lsrfm and ive except leeseo and eunchae, lizrei side ship, reader is in denial, angst with a happy ending, exes to lovers, lmk if i missed anything
pairing: ex! yujin x ex! fem! reader
word count: 3.1k
a/n: this took way longer to type down than i'd like to admit
Tumblr media
With shaking hands, Yujin gave you a small envelope before dashing off in the opposite direction. Your heart leaped as you guessed what it was.
Yujin was your ex. It had been three months since you both ended things. She told you that she didn’t feel like she was in the right mindset to continue being in a relationship anymore. While you were grateful that she didn’t just ghost or ignore you completely, damn right did that hurt. What was worse was how you couldn’t really blame anyone for this since it was no one’s fault.
You had moved on though. You had bandaged up your wounds, and the ghosts that haunted your which reminded you of her had been exorcised.
You were ready for this letter, but you weren’t going to read it on campus. Shoving the envelope in your purse, you walked out. Autumn was evident — leaves were turning orange, brown and yellow, falling out of trees and flying away with the gentle, cool breeze. You pulled the beanie you were wearing more over your ears, not wanting them to go cold. The sound of soft, calming music playing in your earphones accompanying the visual treat your eyes got to see made you smile to yourself and momentarily forget about Yujin and her letter. Upon reaching your dorm, you took out the dorm key and unlocked it, seeing the living room pristine as usual. Trust Rei and Wonyoung for that. You went into your room, which was a stark contrast. Throwing your purse and bag onto your bed, you flopped into your chair in front f your desk exhausted. It was a Friday, which meant that you had the weekend to do your work (or procrastinate), so you stayed in your chair in an odd position, almot like a ragdoll.
Your eyes darted to your purse and you sighed.
Yujin.
‘Curiosity killed the cat,’ a voice in your head said.
‘But satisfaction brought it back,’ another one argued.
You reached out for your purse. If you didn’t read it, you’d be in the dark about what Yujin wanted to tell you, and it’d be rude to ignore her and what she wanted to say. Your fingers traced the edges of the white envelope, as if scared to read the contents. Slowly peeling off the seal, you undid the flap and pulled out the paper inside. You unfolded it carefully, heart beating quic-
“Y/N, Y/N, me and Wonyoung are going to the mall to get some new clothes. There’s a limited edition collection. You coming?”
This could wait. A distraction was exactly what you needed.
“Sure. Give me ten minutes to get ready.”
“The outfit you came back in is fine.”
“Bu- Wait, you saw me?”
“Duh?”
“Oh. Alright then.”
Placing the envelope in your desk drawer, you took your purse again, before opening the door of your room. Rei and Wonyoung were waiting in the living room, Rei giggling at her phone and Wonyoung teasing her about it. Their outfits fit them and their personality perfectly, and for a minute you felt self conscious. Their fashion sense was to die for.
“Ah, Y/N! Ready?”
“Yep. Wonyoung, I really like your shirt. It’s cute.”
She smiled sweetly at you.
“Thank you. Yujin bought it for me.”
Your face froze at the mention of her, and Wonyoung (being the caring person she is) immediately apologized.
“Ah, sorry. I know things aren’t all…smooth sailing…with you guys.”
She grimaced at her own mistake, but you didn’t notice. You were thinking about the letter, and your mind was tracing back to the memories of the year you were together, and oh God, oh God-
“Y/N?”
You could feel her hands on your shoulders, concerned eyes looking down at you.
“You’re shaking…”
She hugged you tight in a moment so rapid you barely felt it. Her arms wrapped around you protectively, one of her hands patting your head like a mother comforting her child. Rei was nearby too. You didn’t see their faces, since your eyes were closed shut so that you could prevent your tears from falling, but you could hear Rei softly talking and reassuring you that everything was okay, a stark contrast to how she usually was.
“Y/N, listen to Wonyoung’s breathing, okay? In and out…in and out. That’s it, that’s it. Nothing’s going to happen, you’re just fine.
They didn’t know what else to say. Neither of you did anything wrong, and Yujin was their friend too. It was a confusing thing to handle.
“Y/N, how do you feel now? Do you still want to come?”
“Yeah. Need to take my mind off things.”
“You sure?”
“Mm.”
“Not a clear answer.”
“I am.”
Rei sighed before nodding.
“If you’re okay.”
Tumblr media
Five hours.
You were at the mall for five hours.
And it sure as hell did take your mind off things.
There you were in your room — stomach satisfied, bags with clothes, stationary and other random items (maybe a plushie or two) in the corner, yet your mind was still restless. Delaying the reading of the letter was not a good idea, since now you had even more nerves than before. You had to open it at some point, but holy shit could you just not do it? You took out the paper inside and unfolded it slowly, your hands shaking as much as Yujin’s when she gave it to you.
Tumblr media
Dear Y/N,
It’s been three months. I thought I moved on, really.
As I write this to you, I realize I haven’t.
I’m not asking you to take me back, but I can’t sleep properly at night because I think about you and cry so much.
~ Yujin
Tumblr media
Your eyes widened, and your jaw dropped. You thought you had healed, but this? These three sentence ripped off the bandages and rubbed salt into the wounds in your heart. You put the paper on your desk, wanting to process what you just ‘blessed’ your sight with, although your brain begged you to read it again. In the end, you gave in and read through it again.
And again.
And again.
And then it hit.
Yujin still loved you. It was so simple with the way she wrote it, but due to the shock factor, it didn’t click.
Yujin still loved you.
No wonder she was shaking.
There was another question — did you still love her too?
Didn’t you move on?
Didn’t you?
Or had you been lying to yourself this whole time?
Leaning back in your chair, you started thinking. You would think about her every night, every time you were bored, every time you were free, every time you were stressed — basically, all the time. You’d think about how she’d hold you, comfort you, hug you, kiss you, cuddle you, talk to you, laugh with you, cry in front of you, vent to you…and more.
Whenever you found yourself in an unideal situation, your mind always darted back to Yujin. ‘What would Yujin do?’ was something you’d ask yourself when you were in hot waters.
Maybe you weren’t over her.
Maybe you still needed her.
Scratch that maybe.
You still loved her.
This realization — this enlightenment — shook you to the core.
The world was spinning around you. You desperately needed her. You needed her with you, to hug you, to calm you down and to tell you that everything was going to be alright.
But she wasn’t here, she wasn’t here.
Interrupting the loud and muddled thoughts in your brain causing havoc was a soft knock at your door.
“Y/N-ah? Can I come in?”
Hastily shoving the envelope and letter in your drawer, you call out.
“Sure, Rei!”
You saw the door handle slowly move, and the girl entered. Her eyes scanned the room, before finding a spot to sit on your bed. You tried to act cool, willing your eyes away from the drawer.
“Y/N, how are you feeling now?”
“What do you mean?”
“A lot, honestly- but right now I’m referring to the slight panic attack you had earlier…?”
“Oh, that. I’m fine, I swear. Yujin’s name just brought back back memories, and- I don’t really know.”
She nodded, her face making it evident that she was lost in her thoughts.
“So the reason I came here is to ask you something.”
“Go on.”
“There’s a party happening tomorrow evening Wonyoung’s not going because she wants to complete her assignments, and I don’t want to go alone…”
She pursed her lips into a thin line and looked at you, a tad bit of hope in her eyes.
“I mean, sure.”
“It’s going to be in Yujin’s dorm…Gaeul and Chaewon are hosting it. I’m pretty sure that Yujin won’t be coming out of her room though.”
That made you freeze. Even though Rei had mentioned that it was unlikely that you’d see her, there was still a chance you would.
Did you want to risk it?
Rei had no one else.
Things could either go spectactularly right or horribly wrong.
“I’ll come.”
“Sure?”
“Sure.”
“You’re sure sure?”
“I’m sure sure.”
You laughed a little, and she smiled too.
“Tomorrow, 7 p.m. Wear something…party-ish, but not too formal, I guess? You know what I mean.”
“Yup.”
Tumblr media
6:45 p.m.
You were sitting on the couch of the living room, wearing an outfit you deemed appropriate for the party. Rei was still getting ready in her room, so to pass the time you were on your phone, scrolling through your Instagram feed.
Chaewon. Like, comment.
Gaeul. Like, comment.
Wonyoung. Like, comment.
Jiwon, Rei. Like, comment, cute.
Yujin.
She didn’t post anything fancy or pictures of her going outside or having fun.
It was just selcas of her wearing her new headphones. She had her favorite lipgloss on, her hair was in a bun and she was wearing her glasses in the pictures.
She probably wasn’t going to be in the party then, since her outfits for parties were completely different.
You should have been sighing in relief, but no — you felt your heart sink from disappointment.
Yet, you were staring at the pictures. She looked adorable, and she was smiling brightly in the last picture, and damn it you were falling for her all over again.
If you weren’t down bad before, this cemented it.
You wanted to see her smile, you wanted to see her face right in front of yours, not on an Instagram picture that didn’t fully capture and present her beauty. You wanted to see her laugh because of you. You wanted her to be with you, and it hurt.
You quickly turned off your phone as you heard footsteps. Rei came in, shining with excitement. She looked stunning. You grinned at her.
“Trying to impress someone?”
Her face turned red, and she looked away from you.
“Uh…um…”
“Is Jiwon coming? Your precious Liz?”
She was cosplaying a tomato at this point, giving you your answer. Liz was a nickname for Jiwon that only Rei had permission to use, and bringing it up was how you could squeeze stuff out of either of them that they were unwilling to divulge at first.
“She is, right?”
“Yeah…”
“Cute. Love the Instagrm post too, by the way.”
“You saw-?”
“Of course.”
“Y/N…”
“I’m not stalking you both! I follow you girls, remember?”
She sighed.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. We should get going now, it’s 6:57.”
You realized how quickly time passed while you were staring at Yujin’s pictures. You stood up and walked out the door, not really expecting anything.
When you reached, the strong smell of alcohol hit your nostrils and you winced, not really liking it. You couldn’t back out now, however, so you just shrugged it off before sitting on the couch in the middle of the living room as people danced, socialized and drank all around you.
You didn’t know anyone at the party on a close basis save for Gaeul, Chaewon, Sakura, Yunjin, Kazuha and of course Rei. You preferred to keep your circle of friends relatively small so that you wouldn’t be involved in any drama, although you liked hearing about it. You always thought it worked effectively, but now you were wondering what it’d be like to be on the dance floor with a few other friends.
Chaewon and Gaeul came over and talked to you at some point, but they had to leave after a while since they were the hosts and had attend to other guests. Chaewon told you that Yunjin and Kazuha didn’t want to come. Sakura was busy, so she couldn’t. Just like Wonyoung, you couldn’t help but think.
You were thirsty and they had arranged some juice in the corner for those who didn’t want to drink. You got off the couch, deciding to let the couple making out nearby have some space. You went over to the table with the juice, and you took a bit of time to choose what you wanted to drink. As you were troubling yourself with this very hard choice, you heard a quiet and groggy voice right behind you.
“Hey, can you pass me a cup of apple juice?”
Extremely familiar voice. Your fingers gripped the plastic cup in your hand tighter.
“Yu…Yujin?”
You turned around, and your guess was right.
There she was in full glory.
She had those headphones on, and was wearing an oversized shirt and sweatpants that looked comfy. You subconsciously tugged at the collar of your dress. Her hair was ruffled, and her eyes were red and puffy along with her face looking sullen, making it obvious that she had been crying before.
“Y-Y/N? I’m sorry, I-I’ll just get-get it my-myself-”
“No, it’s…fine. Apple juice, right?”
The tension was so thick that your 3rd grade English teacher’s ass was (quite literally) shaking. She nodded, and watched you pour her a cup. You could feel her eyes on you, waiting for you to say something, and you guessed that it was about the letter.
Suddenly, you could feel her hand on your shoulder, before she gently pulled you close to her as she wrapped her arms around you in one of her familiar and comforting hugs. Her hand was in your hair, stroking it.
“Come, let’s go to my room. I’ll help you calm down.”
You didn’t say anything in protest, instead simply allowing her to take you. The two of you went inside her dorm room, and she closed the door, locking it. Your eyes darted around the four walls you were in, and your mind flashed with memories of that whole year you both had. You set free the tears trapped in the prison that was your eyes. She hugged you tightly again, her voice soothing.
“Y/N, darling, it’s okay, it’s okay. I’m sorry.”
The petname she reserved for you, ‘darling’, slipped out of her mouth, as she always used to use that with you. She froze for a moment, but as she saw that you had no reaction to it, she relaxed. Back then she could call you that unabashedly, but now she had to be careful. You didn’t care though, you loved the way it rolled off her tongue.
After a few minutes, you had finally calmed down. You looked at the plastic cup in your hand, noticing that it was now half empty. You were sure that it was nearly filled to the brim before though. Your eyes trailed to Yujin’s shirt and you saw a few stains on it, solving the mystery of the missing juice. Were your hands really shaking that much?
“Um…sorry about the juice on your shirt.”
“Nevermind it. How do you feel now?”
You slowly moved the cup — now only contaning half of its previous content — to her free hand, but she gently pushed it back and tilted your hand upward, towards your face.
“You drink it.”
“But-”
“Drink.”
She smiled a little at you, and you were mesmerized. You probably looked like an idiot right now, gaping at your ex, but could you really care? She was here, in front of you, smiling at you, and your eyes darted to her lips almost instinctively, missing how they felt on yours.
“Y/N, how do you feel now?”
Obviously, you couldn’t stare forever.
“Better. Thanks Yujin, you…really helped.”
She tilted her head at you endearingly in her usual manner, her smile getting wider, although there was some sadness behind it.
"I missed you."
Her eyes widened, her facial features rearranged into surprise, confusion and a tiny bit of hope.
“You…missed me?”
You looked at your fingers, fiddling with them nervously.
“Uh…sorry if it was a bit inappropriate to say rig-”
“No, no, no- don’t apologize, Y/N.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t mind.”
Her eyes looked deeply into yours, searching for something, searching for an answer. You knew what she wanted, and you took a deep breath.
“I…I read your letter.”
Her eyes widened, and her fingers intertwined with your desperately. You missed the feeling of her hand fitting perfectly into yours badly, and you didn’t realize that until now.
“And…? I’m not going to react harshly to anything you say, I just-just need an ans-”
“I want you back.”
Her eyes were about to pop out of their sockets at this point. Her face was full of disbelief.
“Re…Really?”
“Yeah.”
Gently taking the plastic cup from your hand before setting it on the nightstand near her bed (one you remembered well), she held the other hand too, a silly little smile on her face.
“Y/N, you don’t have to if you don’t wan-”
“But I do. I want you. I want whatever we had. I need it all back.”
Her smile reached her eye, squeezing out a few tears. One of her hands moved from yours to cup your cheek.
“Thank you for giving me another chance, Y/N darling. I was scared of what you’d say, if I’ll be honest.”
You smiled at the familiar nickname, and inched a bit closer until your foreheads were touching. She giggled softly, a sound that warmed your heart.
In a quick movement, you felt her lips on yours in a small yet delicate peck, as if anything more would make you break. She pulled back, looking away shyly. Your eyes were wide, and your face was frozen in shock. Your lips were parted slightly for a moment, before you put a hand on her shirt collar and tugged it, making her jerk forward so that her lips could meet yours again.
Just like that, you both were back in the old times.

Cursed [Gladion x Moon]
This story is complete ☀︎ | Oneshot | Read Cursed on AO3
Lonashipping Week | Day 2 | Fantasy AU
“A flower from the tropics is a match well made for yours who blooms in the moonlight” -- Arceus
“Princess!” Mallow calls out. “Princess! You can’t keep running away from your suitors!” She shouts once more as her head turns at the sound of rustling leaves.
“Watch me,” Moon shouts back in response from up upon a tree branch, the smug grin on her face growing as her lady-in-waiting stares at her in disbelief.
A chuckle from the foyer across the way, however, soon calls their attention. The Queen stood there smiling as she watched the two girls interact, but Mallow was the first to recompose herself in the presence of her highness.
“Moon, sweetie, you really must come out of hiding,” her mom calls out sternly as Moon swiftly jumps out of the tree. Her feet land with a soft thump behind Mallow, who lets out a small yelp in surprise, but the act doesn’t phase the Queen at all. She looks over at her daughter, noting the crossed arms, the puffed out cheeks, and the furrowed brow. “You don’t want to meet any of them at all now do you?”
Moon finds herself rolling her eyes with a scoff, an unlady-like gesture as Mallow would constantly reprimand her for. “Oh do you mean the Prince of Johto? Or Hoenn? Sinnoh? Unova?  Or are you talking about my favorite person, Gladion of Alola?,” Moon begins with feigned excitement. “You know what mom, you’re right. It’ll be soooo nice to catch up with him and everyone else since you know, you’re marrying me off.”

Day 6: Pikachu’s role in Ash and Misty’s relationship
I did not take this one seriously, so please bear with me. I don’t think this counts as a oneshot. It’s a messed-up essay or something.
Pikachu, Ash’s trusted buddy. What would he do without him?
Pikachu’s been for most of his battles. He’s his number one supporter. They’ve travelled countless regions together.
I mean…technically, 8 regions (if ya count Orange Islands), but you get the point.
One thing not a lot of people don’t know about the boy from Pallet Town is that his number one buddy is also his number one wingman.
Sure, Pikachu has befriended pretty much every person who has traveled with Ash.
There’s the always reliable Brocko.
Sketchy sketchers Traco
Peppy Mayo.
Nerdy Maxo
No need to worry about Dawno.
Fresh Cilantro
Dragon masta Iriso
Geeky Clemonto
Chic-y Sereno
Kawaii-desu Bonno
Spicy Mallow
Cool girl Lano
Zing zappy Sophoclo
Lit Kiawo
Cool hat Lillo
All of them. Ash was friends with them, and Pikachu liked them all.
However, Pikachu noticed something else when his dear Pikapi interacted with the one and only Pikachu-pi.
Pikachu befriended them all. However, Pikachu felt the most connected with Misty. Pikachu truly enjoyed being with Misty.
After all, there was this saying. “A Pokémon acts like its trainer.”
Maybe that means that Ash is most connected with Misty.
Pikachu remembers the time when Pikapi and his Alola classmates visited Kanto. Pika-pika was so happy. Pikachu-pi was there! Pikachu practically jumped into Pikachu-pi’s arms!
Little did anyone know, Pikapi wanted to hug Pikachu-pi too!
But yeah, sadly that was short lived.
Pikachu got a smile out of that, though.
He knew that no matter how many people came to Pikapi’s life…
Pikachu-pi will always be number one!

Mistakes Were Made
A  series of disconnected oneshots that poke fun at the fandom hivemind,  canon, and past!me. I’m taking things that I’ve either observed or done  myself and reframing them in parody where hopefully we can just all have  some low stakes fun and, at best, maybe learn something about our  favorite characters and writing.
Read on ffnet here.
Chapter Four- Wait, How Did We Meet Again?
It was only natural that the Cerulean Gym became the hangout place for all the PokéGirls. First of all, Misty's sisters provided the house with everything one could possibly need for a girly sleepover. Nail polish, gorgeous clothes, lots of makeup, face masks, etc. Secondly, one could presume it was a large space. Certainly it looked that way from the outside, especially after the renovation it must have gotten before Sun and Moon. Similarly, one could only assume that Misty and her sisters lived there, since they're never shown to reside anywhere else. Then there was the central location. Of course, no one has a map of all the anime regions, but since Ash gets to all of them via Kanto—most on foot to boot—we can at least pretend that Kanto is in the middle of all the action.
And, thanks to Misty's dead, missing, or otherwise absent parents—and her aloof sisters—there was no supervision to concern themselves with!
For all of those arbitrary and possibly made up—not to mention rarely canonical—reasons, Misty, May, Dawn, Iris, Serena, Bonnie, Lillie, Lana, and Mallow found themselves sprawled all over Misty's room. Let's say it's a large room, since according to Showdown in Dark City owning Gyms is a good way to make money despite no evidence proving this.
Lana was eyeing all of the Water Pokémon paraphernalia Misty had while Lillie was perusing Misty's closet—Misty, after all, didn't have a mother to force her into clothing that makes her look like a non-Pokémon from another dimension. It was pretty exciting. Dawn and May were gossiping about coordinating while Mallow was trying—and failing—to explain bread baking to Misty. Serena, meanwhile, was dabbing a light amount of makeup on Bonnie's face. The girl was way too young for it, but it was all in good fun, so Serena couldn't see the problem with doing it in the context of a sleepover.
Only Iris was alone. Not only because she didn't have much of an interest in nail polish or makeup, but because…well, she was confused. She kept on glancing at Dawn—and everyone else—trying to gauge if she was the only one who felt out of place in the situation. But if anyone else felt the way she did, they weren't showing it. Finally, in the din of the room, she cleared her throat to speak up.
She said something, but it was lost in the noise of the girls' chattering. She tried again, a little louder, but again, it was swallowed up like a lone voice in a cafeteria. This time, however, Dawn looked over at her and asked, "Did you say something, Iris?"
She said it just loud enough for the room to quiet by half. Taking that as her cue, Iris said, for a third time, "I'm sorry, but just who are all of you?"
Dawn blinked, not sure what her friend was talking about. "Well, I'm Dawn. We met in Unova, remember?"
"No, I know you!" Iris said sharply, not able to hide her frustration any longer. "But who are the rest of you? Whose house is this?"
By then, everyone had hushed and was staring at Iris. They seemed alarmed by her questions and that caused Iris to recoil a bit.
"Well…this is my house," Misty said. "But I'm not sure about the other part. We're all best friends. We all met through Ash."
"Okay," Iris said, almost eagerly, having found something to cling onto. "But how did you guys meet?"
Misty, having accidentally become spokeswoman for the room, took it upon herself to continue. "Uh, well, I met Mallow, Lana, and Lillie in the airport when they came to visit Kanto. And May and I met in Hoenn for the Togepi Festival. And then…"
Misty looked between Dawn, then Iris, then Serena and Bonnie. Her brows furrowed as the words left her. She was left with nothing more to say than, "I…I don't remember."
"Did Ash introduce us?" Iris insisted.
Misty shook her head slowly. "I don't think so. He's not very good at that. I mean, Ash is only indirectly responsible for me meeting any of the rest of you."
"Do we have anything in common?" Iris asked, now on something of a roll.
"Of course we do!" Dawn answered. "We're all great friends with Ash. We all love Pokémon. We've all gone on journeys—"
"Technically we haven't," Lillie interjected in a meek voice. "We do travel occasionally, but I live in my mother's house."
"And she has a butler who drives her everywhere," Lana added.
Iris blinked. "Yeah, that's not so relatable to me."
"Well, we all have careers and aspirations in Pokémon, right?" May asked. "Misty's a Gym Leader and Dawn and I are coordinators…"
"I wanna be a Dragon Master," Iris agreed.
"I've been making a name for myself in Pokémon Showcases," Serena offered humbly. "And Bonnie—"
"I can speak for myself!" Bonnie said. "I wanna be a Pokémon Master, just like Ash!"
"I hope you mean what Ash wants and not what Ash is," Misty mumbled.
"I want to be a Water Type Trainer like Misty," Lana added.
"And I suppose I've been toying with the idea of being a Pokémon researcher," said Lillie.
Mallow was the holdout. She looked awkwardly at the other girls and said, "I think I just want to work at the restaurant with my dad. I mean, my Pokémon work there too and I want to serve to Pokémon customers but…it's just a restaurant."
Her comment was met with silence. Silence which Iris was quick to interrupt. "So. What I'm hearing is that we don't necessarily have a lot in common. I mean, I'm sorry…" she gestured towards Serena, whose eyes grew wide with having been singled out, "but I've never even heard of Pokémon Showcases. That, combined with the fact that I have no idea how I ended up in the same room as any of you, makes me a little hesitant to call you my best friends. My best friends are Ash and Cilan, and Dawn is an acquaintance. The rest of you are strangers."
Once again, the room was thick with silence. This one, profoundly awkward. Silence was not a thing meant to happen at slumber parties. If there was a lull in the conversation, put on a rom-com. If people started ignoring the rom-com, throw on some throwback music. If that failed, take it upon yourself to prank call any one of Misty's sisters. Apparently a lot of unknown numbers were in this room, ready to be utilized for prank calls. However, none of that happened.
"Well, that sure took the fun out of everything," Bonnie pouted.
"It's okay, Bonnie," Serena comforted. "She's probably right. Maybe we should both go home."
"To Kalos?"
Serena shrugged. Just as she was about to stand up to leave, Misty said, "No, that's ridiculous. The least we can do is stay here and get to know each other. We're all friends with Ash and that's enough in common for me. I trust his taste in friends."
"Me too," Dawn said decidedly.
"That's fine with me," Iris said, surprising everyone. "You're just not my best friends."
Moral: Um, sudden endings are off-putting? Sorry, it seemed as good a place to end it as any.
Real Moral: Most of these characters don't know each other. I've read a lot of stories where Misty, May, and Dawn are all best friends, but Misty and Dawn have never met in canon. And there's never any explanation for this. As Misty said in this story, I don't trust Ash to have done a thoughtful introduction between any of these characters. I would buy that May would introduce Dawn and Misty but when? Why? Where? These are good questions to consider when putting these characters in a story together.
Exception: Really, there are lots. I've certainly done this (the chapter "Effeminize" in my Alphabet Challenge comes to mind) and I'd say being a oneshot is the most common exception. The truth is that not every oneshot is going to have the space for this kind of exposition or back story. But, generally, if you can avoid being arbitrary with this kind of thing (or anything) the better your story will be. Specificity is almost always the way to go. But in a multi-chap there's really no excuse for not fleshing this out.
Secondary (Tertiary?) Moral: Yes! A second one! Apologies for this level of preachiness. The second moral is that even if these characters have been introduced, they are unlikely to be best friends. Take into account how much time they've spent together and what they have in common. There might be less there than you'd think. Example: Misty has a real friendship with Lana because they have so much in common, but they're still not best friends like her and Ash or Brock because they haven't spent much time together. She and Tracey spent a lot of time together, but they don't seem to have too much in common, so they're close, but probably not best friends.
Exception: A character who doesn't understand emotional boundaries? I don't know.
