you watched your husband rolling your eyes as the other woman tried to keep on a conversation with him. you were just at the other shop while he was waiting for you. but now this surely had caught your interest.
you looked at the woman. she was a solid ten. but the unmistakable stiffness in severus' shoulders made you realize the inevitable. your husband had no interest in that woman who looked like a goddess in human form.
❝it's so crowded here, isn't it?❞ you heard her ask. my god, even her voice was so much like a soap opera actress.
❝yes.❞ a single syllable response and he turned away.
oops. you would have almost felt bad for the other woman except that he was your husband and she was trying to flirt with him.
❝those crystals are so pretty, aren't they?❞ she gushed, probably trying once more.
❝they're,❞ severus replied in his usual bossy tone which he used on his students, ❝i'm selecting one for my wife.❞
the colour had rushed out of the woman's face and you almost felt like laughing. poor her. she surely didn't know that your husband, this beautiful creature, had his eyes set only for you.
❝i saw you two,❞ you informed him once she was gone.
❝baby, i was not flirting with her,❞ he looked almost worried that you'd suspect him of cheating on you.
❝i know,❞ you grinned, ❝for someone who claims to be not conventionally attractive, you surely do get picked out a lot.❞
❝oh, i wouldn't mind being flirted with,❞ he held your hand, ❝as long as it's you who's flirting with me.❞
dang this wizard. he surely knew how to melt your insides.
❝oh my god, sev. it's about to rain!❞
you could barely keep the excitement away from your voice. you loved, loved, loved rain. even more so, dancing in the rain had always been a part of your bucket list.
❝merlin,❞ severus cursed, ❝if i was dressed in my normal attire, i would have hidden you under my cloak. but now we need to find a shelter.❞
❝i have an even better idea,❞ you smirked and before he could refuse, you dragged him in the rain. the raindrops fell on your bodies and you sighed.
❝what are you doing, y/n!❞ he widened his eyes, ❝we're going to get all we- never mind, we're already wet. but i don't want you to catch a cold.❞
you stopped him with a silly smile. ❝i promise it'll be worth it, sev. just come. i have always wanted to dance in the rain with the love of my life.❞
he stared at you and you snort. he must be thinking of how dunderhead his wife was. but the sight of you so happy and carefree, it warmed his heart. but of course he was not going to let you win so easily.
❝are you a dunderhead, y/n?❞
❝dunderhead enough to do this!❞ you giggled, ❝come on, it's fun! take my hand and let's dance this sadness away.❞
relentlessly, he took your hand in his and slowly, you both were in a rhythm with him twirling you around and you both giggling like kids in the rain. you could feel passersby staring at you both but you couldn't give a darn. you were too lost in the moment. the sky poured down over you and severus had the goofiest grin. somehow the scary professor snape looked so much like a normal human who's in love with another human as he clutched onto you, both of you laughing at the madness.
❝you remind me so much of the rain,❞ you softly mumbled.
he stared at you for the softest of seconds and then pulled you into a kiss mid-dance, rain soaking through your clothes. this was your most favourite kiss from now on.
and when you parted, you looked into each other's eyes and you could swear your husband was blushing.
❝merlin, i am soaked,❞ he complained once the rain was over.
❝but that was fun,❞ you pouted, ❝wasn't it?❞
❝yeah, yeah it was,❞ he kissed your forehead lightly, ❝because it was with you.❞

Unlikely Affection Chapter 1: The Interview
Tumblr media
Authors Note: Hey everyone! I altered the student time line at Hogwarts just a little, They would start school at 12, making Aurora 17 and legal in the UK by the time she begins her relationship with Snape.
This story will follow closely with the movies and we are starting at Goblet of Fire. The first chapter is just after school starts in the fall.
The story will be mature in later chapters and will me marked with a *.
Sitting in McGonagalls office always made me nervous, but this time I was interviewing for a position as a teachers assistant. The interview process was open to fifth years and higher and not that many interviewees signed up, usually because they were scared of getting Snape. I heard that the last assistant he had was a girl from Hufflepuff and the second day, he made her run out of the classroom in tears.
My head of house smiled as she asked me the standard interview questions and I gave her my best answers. I was hoping to be her assistant, but I would stand for Sprout or maybe even Flitwick. McGonagall smiled as she told me she would be proud to have me join the ranks of teachers assistant and my heart leapt with excitement. "Aurora, since you are keen when it comes to potions. I think it would be fitting if you were to be assigned to assist Professor Snape." My smile quickly turned to a frown "But Professor Snape hates Gryffindors. I can guarantee you he will not want me as his assistant." the stern older witch shook her head "Nonsense! I think you would make the perfect assistant, and you are just bullheaded enough to put up with Professor Snape. Now, do you accept the position?" I hesitated for a moment but nodded "Yes Professor." She smiled and clapped her hands together excitedly. "Perfect! He has a free period at the present moment, head down to the dungeons and give him this note, he will instruct you on what your duties will be once you get there." She said, grabbing a roll of parchment from her desk and handing it to me. "Yes Professor, thank you." I smiled and walked out of her office.
As I made my way to the potions classroom my stomach started to twist in knots. I've known Professor Snape for five years now. I know how he is and I shouldn't be nervous, but just the thought of having to deal with him with no one around to save me was terrifying. When I arrived at his office door, I took a deep breath before knocking quietly. "Enter." A firm voice replied from the other side of the old wooden door. I pushed the door open softly walking into his dark, damp office. Snape was sitting at his desk with notebooks and parchments surrounding him.
He looked up at me and grimaced before returning to his grading. "What do you want, Astrill?" My heart started to thud in my chest as I approached his desk, "Sorry to interrupt Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall instructed me to give you this." I spoke quickly, extending my hand which held the rolled up parchment to him. He snatched it from my hand and began reading. He looked at me over the parchment and cocked an eyebrow. "So... You are my new student assistant." I smiled and nodded "Yes, sir." he continued to scowl as he resumed marking classwork. "Very well, you will report to me during your free period, you will be helping the first years not be complete dunderheads." he explained, not once looking up at me, he continued "With the Triwizard Tournament disrupting the year, I can't imagine that your help will not be somewhat tolerable." He glanced up at me and cocked an eyebrow, I smiled again, "Is there something else I can assist you with, Miss Astrill?" He asked, his gaze returning to the parchment on his desk. "Oh...no sir." I said quickly and he flicked his wrist in the direction of the door. "You may go now." I nodded and shuffled out of his office, closing the door quietly behind me.
I stopped halfway up the spiral staircase leading away from the dungeons, leaning against the cold stone. "I guess that could have gone worse." I mumbled to myself before heading to Gryffindor Tower to get ready for dinner.

Teacher Appreciation Day
Snape fic SFW

Summary: A first-year muggle born Hogwarts student decides to get their favorite professor a gift for teacher appreciation day.
Please be kind as this is my first ever Snape fic! I apologize for any errors you may find and I hope you enjoy it! :)

The last class of the day is drawing to an end as Snape is sitting at his desk watching his first-year students panic as they finish up their potions. The students can feel the stress begin to rise in the classroom as everyone is scrambling trying to present their best potion to the professor. The booming voice of Professor Snape interrupts their concentration.
“Times up! Stop what you are doing and bring a vial of your potion up to my desk now,” Snape says clearly annoyed that his students seem to be struggling with making the potion today even though it is a pretty basic one.
As the students are putting the vials of their potion on his desk, Snape begins to tidy up his papers from the lesson glancing up for a moment to see that the class is emptying pretty quickly. His thoughts begin to wander to what book he is going to read over the weekend. His train of thought is interrupted by a student that says, “Professor Snape? Do you have a moment?”
He looks up to see that one of his best first year students is speaking. They always do fairly well in his class and he doesn’t mind teaching them like some of the other dunderheads. “I suppose I can spare just a quick moment,” Snape says though he is very annoyed at this inconvenience as it postpones his afternoon plans ever so slightly. He takes a seat at his desk as they walk down to stand in front of his desk
“Hi, Professor Snape!,” they say visibly excited to be speaking to their professor, “In the muggle world we have a celebration called Teacher Appreciation Day and I was just wondering… have you ever heard of it?” Snape is very confused at this interaction but he doesn’t show it. Instead, he decides to show annoyance because he is very annoyed that this student seems to want to engage in small talk with him and doesn’t have any actual questions pertaining to his potions class.
Raising an eyebrow Snape responds, “I am not aware of this… “celebration” that you are referring to, no.” Why would this student even be bringing this up? What do they want with him? All he wants to do is end this conversation and carry on with his day but instead, the student continues talking and he can’t help but roll his eyes a bit.
“Well… It’s a day where we let our teachers know that we appreciate them! Actually, that day is today!” The student pulls out a gift neatly wrapped in brown paper and tied with a dark green ribbon and holds it out to Professor Snape before continuing. “Potions is my favorite subject, sir, and… you are my favorite professor so I got you a little gift to let you know that I appreciate you, your class, and all that you do here at Hogwarts!”
Snape stares at the student making sure that he doesn’t reveal any emotions on his face. Did he really hear them correctly? Did they just say he is their favorite professor? Surely this is a joke and there’s a prank in the box waiting for him. He makes no movement to receive the gift as he doesn’t want it if it’s just going to embarrass him. The student smiles a bit and takes a step closer to the desk as they continue speaking.
“I want you to have this gift, Professor Snape. Thank you for being a wonderful teacher and for teaching me how to properly brew potions. I am so happy that I get to learn from such a well-esteemed and respected potions master!”
For a quick moment, Professor Snape's guard is let down and the shock of this encounter shows on his face but he quickly returns back to being emotionless. He slowly takes the gift from the student and places it on his desk. “Are you going to open it?,” the student asks him before continuing, “I really hope you like it.”
Professor Snape clenches his jaw and unties the dark green ribbon and unwraps the brown paper to reveal a black box. As he opens the box he braces himself just in case this is truly a prank the Weasley twins put this poor first-year student up to.
Snape slowly lifts the lid of the box to reveal a black leather journal with the initials S.S. on it in silver foil as well as a beautiful and elegant matching silver pen. Professor Snape slowly and methodically examines the journal and pen turning them over in his hands a few times and opening the pages of the journal to inspect them. After a few minutes of silence, he begins to speak being extra careful to not show any signs of emotion.
“While I do not fully understand this muggle celebration day, I am honored that you think of me as your favorite professor here at Hogwarts as there are many other more… popular choices to choose from.” Wanting this awkward encounter to end as soon as possible Snape continues, “Now if you don’t mind I’ve got to get going. I have a meeting with the Headmaster I must attend and it is of the utmost importance I am not late.”
The student nods and simply says “I hope you like it, Professor! I will see you during the next class!” They promptly leave the classroom turning around at the door to give him one last small smile before exiting.
With a flick of his wand, Professor Snape closes and locks the door to his classroom as soon as the student is gone. He doesn’t actually have a meeting with the headmaster he just wanted an excuse to end the conversation with the student before he let his emotions get the best of him. He cannot show any of his students he actually cares about them as he has a reputation to uphold.
Snape smiles a bit as he takes one last look at the journal and pen before carefully placing them in a drawer in his desk. He’s never been one to seek recognition from his students and this is the first student he’s ever taught that has been brave enough to tell him that he’s their favorite professor. It is quite the shock for him to process but he is so grateful to this student for speaking up and giving him this gift. Perhaps he is actually liked and this journal and pen will serve as a reminder of that from now on.
Snape takes a deep breath and carefully composes himself as he heads out of his classroom and heads to the lake for his afternoon walk. He surely has a lot to think about today.

The Lioness [Snape x Reader]
A/N:- I just wanted to publish my nonsensical little drabbles and one shots I had in my writing dump on the computer. Its all very random.
"Longbottom I swear to Merlin, Morganna and Mordred, this is the easiest, safest, simplest, the least explosive potion of all. If you manage to blow your cauldron and my classroom this time then not even Azkaban would keep you safe from me."
Neville visible squirmed almost whimpering in terror as Severus breathed down upon him looming from his height, face set stoic yet the feral look in those obsidian eyes could not be mistaken.
Snape would literally murder the fourteen year old Gryffindor without blinking an eye if the dunderhead manages to ruin even this. He whipped around theatrically almost letting a smile slip when Longbottom let out another fearful whimper.
Who said terrorizing children wasn't fun?
Those little horror stories were worst than a bunch of starving inferi on a good day let alone a bad one.
He could feel Potter and Weasley give him the stink eye from behind and smirked mentally. The fools thought he didn't know what both of them said and did at his back.
He was a spy for God's sake.
He could determine events atleast twenty minutes prior to their occurrence and think about atleast three contingency plans to counter them and all of that just from the shift in the air and people's body language.
But he was human as well. Somedays he grew complacent.
So he could safely say that his brain froze drawing a complete blank when he heard a distinct roar come from outside the classroom. It resounded along the entire corridor and chilled the blood inside his veins when he recognized the sound.
Only a big jungle cat can let out a sound like that. More particularly a lion.
He did not know when he had thrown protection charms around his students and bolted outside the room. He ignored the clamouring of voices from behind and skidded to a stop having run out.
Cause at the foot of the staircase stood not a lion like he had guessed, but a massive lioness.
Complete snow white in colour.
A lion though looking far more terrifying was almost manageable but Severus knew a lioness was a hundred times more dangerous.
She was the hunter of the pack.
The provider.
The original predator.
Twenty times more reflex speed than a lion and twice as savage.
She would have torn into him within mere seconds had he been a muggle, without the protection of magic.
Still the sight was arresting enough and somehow ridiculous considering this was a school full in session in bloody Scotland where-the-fuck-do-you-even-get-lions- here?
The big cat made eye contact with him turning her majestic head in his direction and he gasped.
Those eyes.
He knew those eyes intimately.
Those gorgeous sapphire blue eyes with specks of silver and turquoise in them surrounded by thick lashes on a flawlessly striking face, looking up at him from behind a mass of silken hair.
Mischief, desire, an unknown sadness and... love warring within those oft fluttering eyes.
He knew them like no other.
He had kissed them quite often.
So lost he was in those blue eyes that he didn't hear the terrified screams of his fourth year Gryffindor and Slytherin class as the lioness leapt up from her position with her much acclaimed fluidity and bounded powerfully, directly towards him.
Severus stood perfectly still unable to even raise his wand towards a certain, gruesome and painful death as it literally jumped at him. But instead of throwing him on the ground and tearing into his jugular like he had expected she just stood up on her hind legs leaning on him, her heavy clawed paws supporting her entire weight on his shoulders.
The lioness stood face to face with him breathing on him, her body stretched languidly till his full height.
He could hear his heart pounding inside his chest and it drowned the sounds of the whimpering mass of students behind him. He stared at those sapphire eyes as the Queen of the forests tilted her beautiful head to a side as if contemplating something.
Severus suddenly cracked at wide smile and chuckled much to his student's petrified bewilderment. And they almost fell over themselves when they saw their most hated professor, the bitter mean dungeon bat lean his face forward to touch his forehead to the furry white forehead of the lioness.
And as if that sight wasn't insane enough they saw the lioness closing her own brilliant eyes at the contact and a sound left her which could be termed as a contended purr.
A far cry from the terrifying roar from before.
"Holy fucking shit! Even the lioness is afraid of the greasy git."
Ron whispered and Harry nodded while Hermione looked on thoughtfully.
"Not at all Mr. Weasley. Lionesses aren't afraid of any creature. Though I am sure I can scare a tiger if I put my mind to it. And that will be fifty points from Gryffindor for bad mouthing a teacher."
Ron and the others jumped six feet in the air having no idea that their quiet whispers had been heard by the Professor. But it was almost disconcerting how he sounded none of his scathing bitter self but almost fond and indulgent.
Was the lioness a magical being?
As if on cue the creature started changing form making the students cry out in surprise and stagger back shocked out of their wits. They saw mesmerized as the lioness shape shifted and turned into a.... woman..!!!?
She was ravishingly beautiful.
Not even Fleur Delacour, the French beauty from Beaubaxtons who had the school whipped around her could come close to this woman's exquisiteness.
And she was wearing the standard red Auror robes.
So entranced were they with her stunning beauty that it took them some time to realise that she still had her arms placed on Professor Snape's chest like her animagus form and was grinning brilliantly like some Fairy queen at him.
"Very amusing darling. And why the hell didn't you tell me that your animagus form is a lioness. Fitting though as it is."
Severus drawled languidly and to everyone's horrified fascination put his hands on the woman's hips.. possessively.
"You never did ask... husband."
You replied equally languidly and encircled his neck with your arms next.
"WHAT!"
The words came simultaneously and in different variation from the befuddled students' mouths immediately.
Husband?
Severus groaned audibly. He had forgotten about the dunderheads who had followed him outside. You looked around then taking in your audience and then blinked.
"Oops. You had class right now? Damn.. sorry. I thought.. never mind."
You babbled on nervously as you saw the students looking at you with eyes as big as dinner plates on their faces, making you either feel like you were some exhibit on display or a big piece of mutton.
"That was quite impressive Y/N but as you can see I have...class. I'll see you later love... and we can go at your notes again... together."
The way your husband could make innocent vowels and consonants sound was criminally unfair. You could already feel the promise shivering beneath your sinews as his warm hands felt like a scorching brand on your skin, burning through the thick fabric of your robes.
"Absolutely love. Sorry for disrupting your class. I'll go meet Shacklebolt after Minnie decides she's done with the interrogation."
You smiled brightly seeing your husband's eyes dance in repressed mirth and jubilant delight. You could tell he was abstaining from too much display because of his students but he had liked your little surprise very much.
You had been busy working with the Dark Hunters in India, collaborating with them for helping them fight off the devious and powerful Rakshasas. It had been almost an year since you both had been separated. Though you kept contact through letters, it wasn't the same.
At the end you had literally been physically aching with the uncontrollable need to touch your husband or you were afraid you would have spontaneously self combusted. From the tight almost angry grip he had on your hips and the those purple patches of dark circles looking like bruises under his tired eyes, you knew he had suffered as well.
He left you abruptly and your cells screamed in protest. Your body could hardly contain itself from launching on him and melding in with his very skin.
Oh how you hated the children right now...
As you were about to turn you saw a few of the older Gryffindors and some very very brave (read stupid) Slytherins who had also gathered in the corridor after hearing the mayhem, eye you from top to bottom appreciatively as if you were some kind of succulent exotic fruit.
You smirked wickedly and suddenly grabbed your husband by his robes and barely saw him widening his onyx eyes before you smashed your lips with his violently.
Let them see how strongly uninterested you are of their pathetic appraisal and attentions.
Arrogant horny teenagers with pea sized brains!
Severus though initially shocked at your unprecented move still kissed your insistent mouth back, wrapping you in his long arms, igniting the very fibres of your being with his fervour.
You ignored the shocked gasps and left his lips satisfied and whispered the words, this time only for his ears before whipping your hair dramatically and sauntered off in search of your Godmother and favorite Aunt.
"I missed you love..."

Learning the Tools
Grade seven was a paradoxical year for me.  On Saturdays, I pretended to be quiet and pious in confirmation class aside from my furtive winks at the pretty girl.  Yet on Wednesdays, I was as noisy as I could be, banging the hell out of timber boards or tin sheets with a hammer and real religious fervour.
Pop was a tools man.  Given I had lurked in his shadow since I began to walk, I wanted to be one too.  My Uncle Alan, a bridge carpenter, was one but Dad wasn’t.  It befuddled me that my father couldn’t drive a nail or use a screw driver.  Maybe, Dad’s fingers lacked the dexterity required.  Perhaps, I inherited my dexterity from Mother.  She certainly had it to thread needles.  Consequently, my father owned very few tools.  Pop had probably given Dad the hammer and the hand saw hidden away in our shed although he came by when anything in our house needed repair.
I often ogled Pop’s tools.  Alan stored his tools at Pop’s place too.  I was careful not to let my light fingers anywhere near those.  I learnt that tools were to men what jewellery was to women only useful.  Whenever Pop worked with his tools, I watched intently.  As I grew, he taught me their uses and how to handle them safely then let me help him.  Sometimes, we worked together with the cross cut saw to fell trees.  Young though I was, the saw was safer and easier to use with one of us at each end.
In my final two years of primary school, the Education Department gave me the opportunity to attend rural school one day a week at a much larger district school.  This scheme strove to prepare boys, without academic prospects due to their circumstances, for a trade, and girls for home duties in readiness for marriage.  Despite the government department’s dictum, my school teacher strongly discouraged me and other students from participation.  Fortunately, the decision was ours and our parents to make.  Since the Railway would issue me a travel pass, my parents didn’t care what I chose to do.  So, of course, I was going!  I was born to be a tools man.  Ronnie was going too.  His father didn’t mix his words with the school teacher.  With the two class brains absent, the dunderheads remained and only wished to do diddy squat.  Our school teacher found the situation quite an inconvenience.  For the other four days a week, he attempted to mentally intimidate us whenever possible in front of our classmates.  We knew his game and acted, as best as we could, like saints.
So, Ronnie and I caught the train to Beenleigh and walked the kilometre to the school. We were now thirteen and quite familiar with catching trains.  Children from a few other country schools joined us.  Before long, on our train trips home, an orange peel fight would erupt amongst everybody.  Fortunately, we jumped off at the first stop and escaped these and the usual reprimand from the guard.
The first day was a big deal for us.  We met the twenty plus other boys in our class.  We felt a bit lost to start with amongst so many strangers.  We had to find our way around the school too.  This had lots of buildings, numerous teachers and hundreds of students compared with our one room one teacher school with forty children from the age of five to fourteen.  It was really three schools in one, a primary, a secondary and the rural school with its two big sheds.  When I saw inside these sheds, my eyes opened in wonderment.  I wanted to use every tool in them.  I eyed the electric powered tools enthusiastically.  Pop didn’t own any of these!  One shed was set up for woodwork and the other for tin smithing and technical drawing.
I thought our teacher was an odd man.  Ronnie conferred.  We found his mannerisms strange.  Today, a person would say he was effeminate.  Back then, we, country lads, were innocent of different sexual orientations.  Soon after, I’d unfortunately see him drunk outside of school hours.  Sadly, the harsh social judgement of the community cost him his job.  The man didn’t act inappropriately or unkindly towards us or any boys we knew.
When the new teacher walked in, every single boy’s mouth gaped open in utter silence.  A real hero stood before us!  A very masculine one!  This teacher was Wally Walmsley, an all round cricketer and the coach for the Queensland Cricket Team.  Back then, cricketers worked in day jobs too.  This hero was a batsman capable of batting in any position and was a master of the leg break and googly bowling techniques.  Nobody played up in class!  Of course, we boys played cricket with him at lunch breaks.
In woodwork, I learnt joinery, in particular how to dove tail two pieces of wood together with intersecting cut teeth.  If one wanted to become a furniture or cabinet maker, they needed this skill.  I was just happy I could now repair things that broke at home.  The best thing I made was a sewing box with drawers, which I graciously gave to Mother.  I really enjoyed working with wood and was quite skilled at it given Pop’s earlier teaching.  I found tin smithing more difficult however.  Cutting tin sheets into patterned pieces and hammering these into the required shapes to make cake tins and billy cans was easy enough.  Alas, I struggled to solder the joins between the pieces of tin neatly.  Whilst this worried me at the time, I needn’t have been concerned.  I wasn’t destined to be a plumber.  Besides, soldering would soon become an obsolete skill when the fabrication of metal tanks and the connection of metal pipework ceased.
Alas, the moment I picked up my pencil and slid my set square and T square around a large sheet of paper in my technical drawing class, my imagination came alive and my ability shone.  I was already good at drawing.  I realised a plan was just the specifications for a pattern to construct something.  I knew about patterns and measurements.  I had watched Mother draft and cut out hundreds of patterns for the dresses she sewed her clients.  I also had a natural eye for perspective and could draw it in my diagrams.  Perhaps, my roaming up and down dale over the countryside had developed my spatial awareness.  Then, with my aptitude for mathematics, everything in technical drawing made sense.
I no longer knocked pieces of wood together in a haphazard way to build something.  I calculated the size and measurements for my projects and drew scaled plans with different drawings for their various elevations and perspectives.  I cut the timber or tin according to these plans and the scales required and built my projects.  I used my brain to design and my hands to construct.
I grew from wanting to be a tools man, who followed instructions, to be a design man, who determined the instructions.  I’d subsequently learn that draftsmen were the best paid of the trades too.
I had discovered my gift; a gift that would open the door to my future!

In Noctem Part 15
The Start of the Second School Year,
Fae was cleaning up around her apartment, while also keeping a close eye on her owl and Dipper making sure the two didn't start another fight. The owl sat high above on a bookcase, looking down at the niffler as it scurried about, curiously as he ventured from room to room exploring the new home. Dipper began stuffing anything shiny, that he could get his paws on into his pouch. Small glass bottles, loose change scattered on the floor or in the couch cushions, a chain from a lamp. Then the tiny niffler went into Fae's bedroom, crawling inside.
The bed was partially made as the covers hanged off the side, clothes sitting in a chair in a corner, some pile of books scattered on the floor, several moving pictures of her friends were placed on a bookcase next to some potion books, a copy of a history of magic, a writing desk with some drops of ink spills on it, small pale blue lights hanging from the curtains and around the ceiling of the room. Dipper set his eyes on a silver belt buckle, hanging off to the side of Fae's bedroom dresser. It crawled over and hopped up, latching the belt's leather into his mouth until he managed to pull it out. Fae walked into her room with her owl on her shoulder wondering where her little friend went until she spotted the creature, starting to stuff the belt into his pouch.
"Dipper, no! I need that!" She ran over and grabbed the other end of the belt. The niffler quickly latched on as he began to pull back, like a dog in a game of tug of war. Fae managed to pry the belt from the niffler's mouth as she tickled Dipper's stomach pouch. She stood up and quickly placed the belt back into the drawer, closing it shut then she turned back to her niffler. She let out a tired sigh and bent down scooping Dipper up into her arms.
"I can't leave you alone for a second, can I." She chuckled. Fae walked over to her desk, placing Merula's wand on it. She pondered on whether or not she should get a new one. It was the only thing that she had left of Merula, she hated to part from it. But the new school term was coming around fast, and she needed something efficient that would work with her. Fae decided that on her next visit, she was going to stop by Ollivanders in Diagon alley to pick one up. Then Fae heard a tap on the window glass and turned to find a dark grey owl, sitting on the other side with a letter in its beak. Strange, she wasn't expecting any letters today. It couldn't be...
She placed Dipper on her bed and walked over to the window, opening it. She took the letter from the owl to see who it was from. The was no address from the sender but it did have hers. It was from Severus. He had finally sent one to her after all. Fae opened it open but was confused when she saw only a blank piece paper inside. She never seen this type of letter before. How was she going to write back to him? Fae felt a pinch and she let out a hiss in pain as the owl bit her fingers then flew off.
"Rude." Fae muttered under her breath. She walked over to her desk and set Severus letter down, pondering. She looked over at her quill and ink and started to write on it, hoping she didn't mess it up.
"Severus?" Fae's eyes widened, seeing the ink disappear and more words appeared.
"I see you got my letter and you've managed to figure it out. Good. Maybe, you're not such a dunderhead after all." Fae frowned. Yep, it was Snape alright, he was the only one who will say or write anything insulting.
"How has your summer been? I've been keeping busy around the house." Fae wrote back.
"It has been...quiet." Fae chuckled.
"I assume you find it peaceful not having to deal with any students."
"Yes."
"So, out of the blue, when is your birthday?" Fae wrote back. She already knew what to get him. For several minutes, she didn't receive a response.
"Why do you want to know?" She saw him wrote back.
"I want to do something for you this year. I felt bad not getting you anything last year. I didn't know. Trust me, it's nothing bad."
"That's not very reassuring." Fae chuckled.
"I promise it is not a prank. But I can't tell you what it is. It'll spoil the surprise." She wrote back to him.
"Very well. It's Jan. 9." Fae smiled. Finally, she had a date to go on. Now she just had to keep Severus from finding out.
"Are you excited about the new school year?" She wrote back to him and waited a few minutes until he responded.
"I suppose. I have to get some more ingredients in Diagon alley for my storage in the classroom." Fae's eyes widened a little.
"I am going there too in a few days. Maybe, we'll see each other!"
"Perhaps, we will."

Chapter 9 - Fool
Words: 6.8k
Warnings: nothing much; fluff and angst

I made a fool of myself
____________________
Much to Y/N Icestone’s dismay, her request to Draco; Draco’s request to his father; Draco’s father’s request to Professor Snape didn’t last long. After the official split of the controversial Gryffindor-Slytherin couple, Y/N let all the emotions flow. Months of bottled-up feelings freely flowing.
Hatred, mostly.
The girl just couldn’t stand to see or even get a tiny little glimpse at the boy who captured her heart, held it carelessly, and smashed it into pieces. The mere thought of him even enraged her. Hating the fact that she was so gullible to believe that someone truly liked her because of her and her alone. Not the titles, the money, or the power that she came with.
But as the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens. Sure, her relationship with the Weasley had a very unfortunate ending but at least another story went on - her friendship with Draco Malfoy. And Draco, being the good friend he is, decided to help her.
Even if all the blonde Slytherin did was send an owl to his father, it did help a lot, truly. 2 weeks being George-Weasley-free during potions class. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, as the individual potions’ work eventually dissolved as they had to work by pair again.
“This next potion you’re about to brew is much more difficult than the last.” Professor Snape informed the class. “Truth be told, I’d still prefer everyone to work individually.”
Honestly, there’s not a potion that Y/N Icestone can’t brew perfectly. Sure, there could be some difficult ones but the girl is always up for the challenge. Working alone versus working with a pair didn’t really have that much difference. She firmly believed that she’d do well even without a partner. I mean, the girl basically proved herself in the last 2 weeks.
“But due to a lot of errors and mishaps, I’m gonna allow you to work in pairs. Your partner will be your previous partner. Now, get to work!” Snape ordered with a scowl, grasping his black robes as he started to walk around the classroom.
I should’ve just asked my Father. Too bad he never got close with Snape. Too bad Draco’s not here. The Slytherin thought, letting out a huff before making her way towards her previous table - the one she shared with the boy she’s trying to avoid.
____________________
As the Slytherin sat on top of the stool beside the desk where their bubbling cauldron was placed, she couldn’t help but send a look towards Daphne who was putting ingredients into their cauldron.
Sensing Icestone’s look, Greengrass’ attention diverted to her best friend, raising a brow as if asking “what’s wrong?”. Y/N rested her elbow on top of the desk, placing her chin on her palm, pouting.
Daphne let out a small chuckle, shaking her head from left to right. But just before she was about to mouth a few sentences towards the sour-mood Icestone, the shocked look on her best friend’s face stopped her in her tracks.
Professor Snape immediately waltzes towards Icestone and Weasley’s shared desk, crossing his arms as he towered over the ginger with a scowl. “Mr. Weasley, I know that you have a knack for making stuff explode but for the love of Salazar, stop practicing the nonsense in this class. Have you not learned your lesson from the past week?” He let out, tone full of disappointment.
“As expected from a Gryffindor. You just lost your house 10 points.” Snape continued before reaching out for his wand, making the mess disappear.
“Detention, Mr. Weasley.” The potion’s master ordered before turning his heels to walk away.
Before the Slytherin was able to open her mouth and make a snide remark, Professor Snape looked back, eyes burning holes at the girl’s forehead. “You too, Ms. Icestone.”
Y/N’s jaw dropped in disbelief. It’s not like any of the mess was her fault. It was all Weasley’s! All she had to do was prepare all the ingredients and line them up in order for the ginger to put it in so what’s bubbling in the cauldron was definitely not under her control. The girl firmly believed that she should have gotten detention for actually doing her part right. “But professor-”
“Not another word.”
Great. So much for avoiding George Weasley.
____________________
Later that day, Y/N Icestone found herself walking out of the Great hall to go straight towards the dungeons. But not towards the Slytherin common room. Rather, towards the potion’s master’s classroom. To serve detention.
Truthfully, the girl didn’t know what it was like to serve detention under Snape’s name. Was it harsh like what other students claimed it to be or were people just over exaggerating?
But come to think of it, Y/N Icestone didn’t know what it was like to serve detention under any other professor’s name. She has never gotten herself into detention anyways. If it wasn’t for the Gryffindor, she wouldn’t have even been here. She would’ve kept her record clean!
Fortunately for the girl, Professor Snape’s favoritism towards the students under Slytherin was true. The reason? Well, the only reason why Icestone got detention is so that someone could keep an eye on every other pupil who got detention as they manually scrub all the dirty cauldrons. The potion’s professor simply told the girl that he had important business to attend to and so he’s entrusting detention towards her.
Additionally, he promised that Icestone’s record would still be clean and that he’s adding 10 points to Slytherin for the girl to help him. Unfortunately for the girl, no other pupil was serving detention under Snape but George Weasley himself.
Oh how Y/N Icestone wished that there was another unfortunate student who messed up in Snape’s class today.
25 minutes into detention, the Slytherin was starting to get bored. After all, she too wasn’t allowed to use her wand. But hers was kept inside her pocket either way; Kept inside her robes with the ginger’s.
But still, despite having the privilege of just sitting there and not scrubbing dirty cauldrons, her rage towards the ginger didn’t disappear. No matter what angle you look at it, she still wouldn’t be here if the Gryffindor didn’t mess up.
The Slytherin huffed in boredom, piercing her cold eyes towards the boy.
“I hope you’re aware of how much I despise you right now.” Y/N spat, deciding to break the silence inside the classroom.
“I’m sorry.” The ginger murmured, trying to scrub the cauldron he was holding a little faster. “I’ll try to work faster. There are about 12 cauldrons left.” George informed.
Y/N hatred flowed freely, yes. But no, it couldn’t last for so long. Not when George Weasley makes it so hard for her to hate him. Why was the boy so nice?
You look happier. She recalled. It was all bullsh-.
“What happened anyway? Didn’t I line up all the prepared ingredients for you on the table? Didn’t you follow what the book said?” The girl questioned, hoping to at least get a decent explanation from the ginger on why their potion was suddenly messed up.
The last time George messed up his potion was because of someone else tampering with it. But since the partner system in Snape’s class was administered again, Y/N doubted that it was another work of her housemate because even if George was their target, Y/N would be included in that target because they were...well, partners.
And the girl knew that no one dared to mess with her.
“I’m sorry.” George repeated. Refusing to look at the Slytherin, his attention was still mainly towards the cauldron.
This time, Icestone was now really annoyed. “Is ‘I’m sorry’ the only words you know how to speak of?” she grunted, rolling her eyes.
“Sorry-, I mean, I’ll do better in the future, I promise.” replied George.
“If there is a future.” The girl murmured, huffing.
The boy didn’t know what she meant but he decided to just ignore it and get to work.
____________________
“Where have you been?” The Malfoy heir questioned after standing from his seat to walk towards the Icestone heir.
“Draco? What are you still doing here? It’s late.” The girl pointed out, moving past the boy to sit on one of the leather couches located inside the common room.
“Hey, I asked you first!” The blonde complained, following the 6th year and sitting beside her.
By now, the cold room located under the black lake was quiet, seeing that it’s already late at night and there were classes tomorrow. The only people present were Icestone, Malfoy, a few students from year 7 studying, and the prefect who decided to stop by and organize the announcement board.
Y/N leaned her head on the seat, sighing before closing her eyes. “I was monitoring Professor Snape’s detention class.” She informed with annoyance not towards the blonde, but towards the task.
“You? Why you?” asked Draco.
The girl turned to face the curious boy, eyes staring at his confused ones. “Well, he did say that he had some important business to attend to.”
The blonde furrowed his brows, still not satisfied with the answer. “Okay, but why you? It could have been the prefect or whatever.”
The girl let out another sigh. “Because stupid George Weasley was my partner in potions and he messed up so Snape decided to include me in his suffering. Thankfully, I didn’t do any scrubbing. My nails would have sucked!”
“Partner?! I thought you guys worked individually now? Didn’t my father...”
“Yeah...but apparently, there are too many dunderheads in the class so…” The girl said, rolling her eyes before shrugging.
“Why’d you wait for me? Didn’t you say you had a test on Defense today?” She asked to divert the topic away.
“Well…”
“Yes?” Y/N urged, anticipating as she examined the boy’s look. Draco’s usually perfectly styled hair was no more as he wore his uniform trousers and a plain white shirt.
The Malfoy heir let out a small and shy smile. “I wanted to give you something.”
Icestone stood straight, both hands held out towards Malfoy as she waited for him to give her whatever it was that he was planning to give.
“Is it chocolate chip cookies? It better be chocolate chip cookies.” She commented with a grin, her eyes sparkling at the thought of her favorite sweet.
Draco chuckled at her actions. “Close your eyes.” He instructed before fetching the object inside his pocket.
Y/N felt the boy’s warm hands go over hers, feeling jewelry being put on her wrist. In the absence of the warm feeling of Draco’s hands, the girl opened her eyes, the grin on her face never faltering.
Taking a look at her right hand, there it was, clasped on top of the Slytherin’s wrist, a silver chain bracelet with diamonds and emeralds resting beside each other.
Her eyes made contact with the blonde’s gray ones, shock and slight confusion on her head. “What’s this? I don’t recall that it’s going to be my birthday soon.” She playfully asked.
Draco grinned, eyes turning towards his own wrist. “Do you like it? It’s a family heirloom but I had it customized to give it a little bit more style that suited both of us. Diamonds for Icestone and Emeralds for Malfoy.” Draco explained as he lifted his own wrist, a similar bracelet placed on top of it.
“Do I like it? No, I actually love it very much. It’s gorgeous.” Y/N stated, earning an even bigger grin from the blonde.
“Thank you, Draco.” the girl thanked, engulfing the blonde into a big hug.
Green apples and peppermint. That’s what Draco Malfoy smelled like. Y/N Icestone thought the scent made her feel nostalgic about her own childhood. After every tutoring session with Mr. Princeton, the fairy that she had back then would bring her some sliced green apples and tea. Specifically, it would be peppermint tea if it was the cold season.
The girl didn’t know why she suddenly thought of her childhood. Maybe it was because of the way things are now. Maybe it was because she wanted to go back to the old days. Maybe it was because the boy on her arms made her day 100% better or maybe it was a sign. She is yet to find out.
“So, where’s my chocolate chip cookies?”
____________________
Oh, thank Draco Lucius Malfoy for making THAT one day a little bit better.
Ever since last week’s potions class and the detention that followed, the days passed by quickly. Sure, there was still a little tension whenever Gryffindor and Slytherin shared classes but slowly and surely, Y/N Icestone was starting to let go of it.
There’s no point in dwelling in the past. Lixie once told her. Additionally, her hatred doesn’t even last long. Not when the ginger makes it so hard. Hatred will bring you nothing, anyways.
It’s been two months since the Icestone heir sent that enchanted letter declaring how she was the one playing with the ginger. Meaning, two whole months have passed ever since the controversial couple split up.
Truthfully, the time the Slytherin spent thinking about where she went wrong, what went wrong, and what lacked in her rarely came anymore. Back then, when she’d be idle and alone, she’d stare at nothing and suddenly cry due to her mean thoughts. Now, Y/N Icestone knew her worth, and turns out, she was too much for George. She was too good for him. Daphne and Draco made sure she knew that.
However, even if months have passed ever since her relationship with the Gryffindor, both Icestone and Weasley were having a hard time.
After being convinced that there’d be no way the ex-lovers would communicate seriously for final closure, both parties tried to bury their feelings deep inside them. But putting too much stuff inside a bottle will burst it open.
“What did you want once it was all over, George?” Icestone quietly spat, trying hard not to divert the other people’s attention towards them.
Today was the day where the week’s potions class happened. It was annoying for Icestone, really.
Come to think of it, Y/N Icestone loved potions. She even wanted to practice a career centered in potions someday. But this class? She hates it. She used to love it but now she hates it and ironically, the same reason why she loved it and hated it now was the same - being partners with George Weasley.
One minute they were quietly working on the contents of their cauldron and the next they were confronting each other about their previous relationship.
“...”
The Slytherin sighed, dropping her hands beside her before putting a palm on her forehead. “I’m a fool!” She declared, disappointed laced all over her voice.
The girl let out another sigh before continuing. “I was so bloody stupid for thinking that you were different. I’m a fool for believing that you love me. I’m such a fool! I was never like this before. How did you make me become such a fool for you?”
“But did you?” Asked George, expression with a little bit of curiosity and unknown hope as his brown eyes pierced into the girl’s glassy ones.
“Did I do what?”
It was only then when the boy started to feel a bit embarrassed about the thought of telling the girl in front of him what he wanted to say out loud. Despite being embarrassed, George was never raised to be a coward. He was sorted into Gryffindor after all.
“Did you love me?”
The girl felt her breath hitch, flustered by the boy’s question.
Y/N contemplated for a few moments before giving out her answer.
The question merely required a “yes” or “no” as an answer but oh how it made it seem like it was the hardest question to answer right now. If the girl answered “yes”, then what would that make her? She’d be the gullible girl George Weasley played with! But if she answered “no”, then she’d be lying. Oh, how she hated lying.
So instead of giving a direct answer, she asked back. “Did you?”
One side of George’s lips curved, his expression a smirk but mischief absent. “I asked first.”
He pointed out. “I said, did you?” The Slytherin pressed on, waiting.
Truthfully, the girl didn’t know what answer she should expect. She didn’t know how to react when she hears the boy’s answer. Is she really ready to know whether the Gryffindor truly loved her or not?
“Never.” George mumbled, turning his attention back towards their brewing potion.
Icestone’s jaw dropped, shocked by the ginger’s declaration. Thankfully, her heart didn’t fall into her stomach. No, it didn’t hurt at all. Why? Because the girl knew better.
“This is going to be the last time you’re ever going to lie in front of my face, Weasley.” She hissed before grabbing a vial to put in their brewed potion and gathering all of her belongings to leave the room.
“Never did I not.” The Gryffindor continued, sighing nobody but himself.
____________________
Two weeks after the confrontational outburst regarding Icestone and Weasley’s past relationship, the girl finally became fed up with the sight of George.
Things just didn't go right for her when it was time for potions class. Mainly because her ex boyfriend was her partner. They just simply couldn’t get along.
She was tired. For Merlin’s sake, all she wanted was a peaceful year and good grades but the ginger was hindering both of that for her.
“Professor, can’t I change my partner? Daphne Greengrass and her partner gave me their permission to switch too!” Icestone convinced the potions master.
The dark eyes of the professor bored itself on the face of the Slytherin. “Can you tell me, Ms. Icestone. Why do you have the need to change your partner? Didn’t I make myself clear at the start of the year that whoever you choose will be permanent?” Answered Snape.
“I don’t think Weasley is a good partner, sir. Look what happened last time, Professor. I don’t want to fail this class and if he continues to be my partner, he might drag me down with him!”
Snape’s lips curled into an unamused smirk. “That’s not my problem anymore, Ms. Icestone. You’re smart. You do something about it.”
At least Y/N tried.
“Listen.” The Slytherin called out, making the Gryffindor face her with a nervous look.
The girl’s arms were crossed, an annoyed but compromising expression plastered all over her face as she stared at the boy’s eyes.
If present Y/N Icestone was to tell past Y/N Icestone how she would be the first one to let her pride down towards George Weasley, she probably wouldn’t believe her.
But it must be done. Because there is no way that the Y/N Icestone is going to fail potions just because of a boy.
“If we’re going to force ourselves to work together for Potions, then we have to at least be on speaking terms with each other.” Icestone began, earning a small nod from George.
“We need proper communication, okay?” She continued, earning another nod.
Y/N nodded at George’s acknowledging nod. “So how about we figure this out and start again?” She offered.
“Yes, I would like that very much. Thank you.” The Gryffindor carefully began, sneaking a look at the girl’s expression before continuing.
“And, I’m sorry. For everything. For ruining our potions the last weeks and for dragging you to detention with me. I didn’t mean it, I swear! It was just an accident.”  George reasoned, rambling in the middle of his explanation.
The girl merely nodded to show how she was listening to every word. “So, friends?” asked George as he offered a hand towards the girl.
Icestone’s cold eyes burned holes at the back of the boy’s hand, contemplating whether to shake it or not.
Truthfully, the girl’s objective was to make them go in speaking terms again. They didn’t have to be friends, really. They just needed to communicate in potions class so that her grade doesn’t descend even further.
Also, Icestone was not sure what being friends with George Weasley would bring her. Would it bring her the peace that she wanted? Or would it just mess up her head even more? What would be the consequences of shaking the ginger’s big warm hand? Was she prepared for those consequences?
But nonetheless, the girl took the risk of compromising. She really wanted the good grades. “Friends.”
____________________
Turns out being friends with George Weasley didn’t give any harm towards Y/N Icestone. In fact, it felt like a breath of fresh air.
No, it wasn’t as if their previous midnight escapades at the astronomy tower resumed. It wasn’t as if they’d greet each other whenever they passed by each other. And no, it wasn’t as if they spent some time in the library to study. No, nothing was like that.
Their interaction remained inside the potion’s classroom. And it was refreshing, really. Y/N Icestone didn’t have to dread attending the class anymore. She finally had proper teamwork with her partner and her grades were starting to stabilize once again.
Additionally, everyone always tried to be an insider towards the girl’s life. And truthfully? The girl didn’t want another set of rumors about herself and the Gryffindor rekindling their love or some other type of rubbish flying around the school.
“Wanna know a secret?” George suddenly asks, making Y/N steal a quick glance at him.
“Sure.” She muttered, resuming her work on squeezing the juice out of the beetle for today’s potion work.
“The first task involves dragons.” The ginger whispered, looking proud at himself.
“Dragons?! What are they gonna do with them? Fight them?” The girl asked, shocked.
“Yup.”
“But...isn’t that dangerous?”
George gave her a nod. “It is. The Triwizard tournament involves 3 extremely dangerous tasks anyways.”
Aside from the information about the Triwizard tournament, the Slytherin was rather amazed at how the Gryffindor got the information.
“You really have a way around things, don’t you? How did you find out anyway?” Asked Y/N.
“My older brother, Charlie, brought them here. He works with dragons.”
However, even if Icestone and Weasley’s friendship remained during potions, the Slytherin was not free from her best friend’s concerned interrogation.
“What’s up with you and Weasley?” Daphne suddenly asks one night when the two were preparing to go to bed.
“We’re friends, I guess.” Answered Y/N.
The raven-haired girl sat on her bed, moving towards Icestone’s to lay down beside her, facing her.
“You can’t be just friends with your ex-boyfriend!” She exclaimed, earning a raised brow.
“Why not?”
“Well, because he’s your ex!” Daphne said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Icestone chuckled, placing a hand on top of the Greengrass. “Relax, Daph! It wasn’t like...anything in our previous relationship was real.”
“But you felt real emotions, didn’t you?”
“Well, that was on me!” Y/N reasoned. “It’s not like I have feelings for him, anymore.”
Instead of getting a verbal response from Daphne, all Y/N received was an unamused look.
“Okay, maybe I do but I’m trying to move on! Like I said Daphne, what we used to be will never be again. We’re just not...compatible.”
Icestone’s best friend’s lips curled into a smirk.
“You know, I read something in a magazine before. You can’t be just friends with your ex. Or, you can be friends but that only means that one still likes the other.”
“Well, the one who likes the other is definitely not me.” Y/N denied.
Daphne gave her a raised brow. “Then it’s Weasley?”
“No! I don’t even know if he really did like me. Even if he did, I like to think that he didn’t. The thought makes it easier to move on. Besides, all those are behind us now. Right now, we’re just friends. Really.”
“I just don’t want you to get hurt again, Y/N.”
“I won't, Daph. I won’t.”
____________________
Meanwhile, inside Fred and George’s shared dorm with their best friend, Lee, who was actually nowhere to be seen.
“So you’re telling me...you and Icestone are back to being friends?” The older twin tried to confirm, not really impressed with the idea.
George answered with a nod and a short “yeah.”, earning a raised brow from his twin.
“Why are you back to being friends? That’s impossible!” Fred exclaimed, shaking his head as he paced around the room.
“Why can’t we be friends? I think being friends is much better than being strangers. It gives us peace, you know? We don’t really fight during potions anymore.” The younger ginger reasoned.
“Peace?!” Fred repeated. “Be honest with me, Georgie. Are you really at peace? Is your heart at peace? I know you know that you can’t be just friends with your ex!”
Fred’s words started to sync into George’s mind. Was he really at peace after all the chaos that has happened in the past few months? Was he really at peace after being friends with Y/N Icestone despite still having real and genuine feelings for her? Was he really at peace even if answers to his questions were not being handed to him? Even if there was still no closure between them?
But then again, being friends with the girl than being enemies was much better, right? At least he still saw her. At least he still talked to her.
Is that enough?
“You know what, Fred? I can’t be just friends with Y/N Icestone.” The younger ginger declared, standing up from his bed.
“I want her back, Freddie. But I don’t know what to do. What should I do?” He continued.
The older ginger gave him a wide grin, patting his back. “Dear, dear, George. How about a plan b?”
“Plan b?”
Fred nodded. “Yeah, plan b. B that stands for ‘boy I realized that I can’t live without you and that you’re the one that I want so please take me back’”
“That’s such a long name.” Grunted George, shaking his head from left to right.
“Oh, no need to be intimidated by it. I can guarantee you that this is 100% going to work.” Fred assured his twin as a million thoughts flooded his mind, one by one constructing a blueprint inside his head to help his brother.
George sighed, unsure as the look of his worn-out pajamas came into his view. “I don’t know, Fred. The last time you and I made a plan that involved Y/N Icestone, it broke my heart. It broke her heart!”
“That is why we’re gonna mend it back!” Fred said enthusiastically.
“How?” asked the younger ginger with uncertainty.
Suddenly, George found himself alone in their dorm after Fred came running out and towards the common room.
“Angelina!” George heard Fred call. Shaking his head afterward with the thought: how is Angelina going to help with me getting back Y/N Icestone? Fred will probably just flirt with her all throughout.
“What do you want, Fred?” Huffed Angelina, annoyed at the look of a wide-grinned Fred because it could only mean one thing; mischief.
“You in?” He asked without any other context, earning a confused Gryffindor chaser. However, the expression on the boy’s face didn’t falter.
After a few moments of silence, the girl eventually understood what the tall ginger was pertaining to. They did talk about it previously anyway.
This time, it was Angelina’s turn to call somebody. “Alicia!”  The other Gryffindor chaser stood from her seat, excusing herself from the study group she currently was in before approaching her teammates. “Angie, you called?”
The dark-skinned girl turned to look at her, her expression the same with the boy; a wide grin.
“You know that one time when you told me that you owe me because I covered you up from McGonagall for sneaking into the Ravenclaw tower that one night?”
“Yes…”“Well, now’s the time to pay it back.”
Fear started to spread in Alicia Spinnet’s eyes. “I don’t think I like where this is going…” she remarked.
“Well, there’s nothing you can do about it.”
____________________
The next Monday morning, as Y/N Icestone made her way towards the Great hall, alone (for the reason that Daphne just had the habit of waking up much earlier than her to do all her morning rituals before starting the day), the Slytherin noticed how students of different houses passed on information with each other like it was their form of the morning paper.
Typical. The Slytherin thought.
But she wouldn’t lie, she too, was curious about what baseless rumors are being passed around this week. Last week, it was how Harry Potter would probably lose the first round in the first task for the Triwizard tournament. Draco even made it worse for the boy who lived by making his goons hand out pins that state “Potter Stinks”. Y/N thought it was childish but boys will be boys.
What even made her curious is the way people stared at her, looking at her up and down as if she was a piece of meat.
I mean, she was used to people keeping an eye on her, she did have a good sense of fashion and her presence alone demanded attention, but something was different for today. Why? Because as people gossiped, they were looking at her.
“What’s everyone gossiping about these days?” Y/N asked her cat, Lixie, who she was carrying in her arms.
“Would you really like to know?” The cat replied, still feeling sleepy.
“That’s why I asked, didn’t I?”
Lixie yawned, kneading his paws. “Seems like Weasley got himself a new girlfriend.”
“Fred and Angelina became official?!” The girl asked, shocked.
“No.”
“Ron and...some girl from Gryffindor?” The girl asked, unsure.
“No!” The cat hissed, clearly getting annoyed at the girl’s obliviousness. “It’s George, Y/N.”
“Oh.” Icestone let out.
I guess Lixie’s response gave her the understanding as to why people were staring at her. The gossip was about her ex-boyfriend.
Surprisingly, she didn’t feel anything negative from the information. It was better than she expected. She didn’t feel blue, hatred, or any remorse at all. Although she felt a little annoyed at how the people still associated her with the Gryffindor.
“Who is it then?” she pondered.
No matter who she thought it was, none of them really matched George. But maybe it was someone she didn’t know. After all, there were a lot of students from Gryffindor that she had no idea of.
“I don’t know and I don’t really care. I heard she’s not even pretty.” Lixie shared, hoping to close the topic so that he may get back to his nap.
____________________
Meanwhile, at the Gryffindor table where the center of this week’s school gossip was located, was an annoyed yet slightly scared Alicia Spinnet.
“I swear to Godric, Fred, if the Slytherins find out about this and make fun of me, I’m gonna tell Angelina to kick you off the team.” The girl grunted as she displayed a balled fist for the older Weasley twin.
“Too bad she can’t do that ‘cause I’m literally one of the best beaters this team has ever had.” Fred teased, sticking a tongue out.
Instead of the twins sitting beside each other like they usually do, Fred was seated in front of George who’s back was facing the Slytherin table. Beside George was Alicia while Lee was beside Fred.
Today’s mission was to earn the attention of the Slytherin in which all George and Alicia had to do was sit beside each other after Lee purposely spread rumors about them dating. Additionally, to know whether the mission was a success or a failure, Lee and Fred were there to monitor everything.
“Then I’ll tell her your secret!” Alicia challenged, crossing her arms in front of her.
“What secret?” Fred hesitated, nervousness starting to engulf him.
“I know you like her, Freddie!” gloated Alicia.
“Oh yeah? Well, what is there to be afraid of? I’m no coward, I’m a Weasley!”
“Lee, any news?” George queried after shaking his head at Alicia and Fred’s antics.
“The snake just entered the hall,” Lee reported, quietly keeping an eye on the walking Slytherin as she took her usual seat on her house’s table.
“She is seated in front of Malfoy. She’s also beside Greengrass and they’re whispering.” The boy continued.
____________________
As Y/N took her usual seat beside the 6th year Greengrass, she noticed the girl being more ecstatic compared to every other morning. The girl was glowing, her grin was wide and a shade of pink flooded her cheeks. It seems like she was announcing something very important, seeing the tablemates’ attention focused solely on her.
At least something different was being talked about at Slytherin. Y/N thought, internally smiling at herself.
The Icestone heir observed all the attentive faces, her eyes landing on the blonde boy in front of her, the Italian boy seated next to the blonde, then the quiet boy who always had a book in hand who had the same shade of pink on his cheeks.
A thought entered the mind of the Slytherin, theorizing what her observations meant but deciding to find out to confirm everything.
Y/N bumped her shoulders to the girl beside her, whispering. “Daphne? What’s going on?”
Greengrass turned to face her, her eyes shining. “Turns out, my parents found me a match! I just received the owl.”
The Icestone mirrored the girl’s smile. “Well, you seem happy about it, Who is it?”
The boy seated next to Blaise Zabini let out a cough, making Greengrass steal a glance before turning back to her best friend.
“Theodore Nott.” Daphne giggled.
The smile on Icestone’s face dropped, cold eyes piercing the mentioned boy as she put on her most intimidating look.
“Alright, Nott. You listen here-” She began.
“Oh, poor boy.” Malfoy murmured, shaking his head with a smirk plastered around his face.
“Don’t scare him!” Greengrass scolded, smacking her best friend on the arm.
“I’m just kidding!” Icestone snickered before laughing at the boy’s terrified look.
“Cheer up, Theodore. I’m only joking.” She assured.
“But oh! I’m so happy for you, Daph! You were always waiting for this day to come, weren’t you?” Y/N commented before giving the raven-haired girl a side hug.
“Congrats best friend! We’re both betrothed!” Daphne beamed, returning the hug.
A series of falling silverware started to fill the Slytherin table, making the two girls pull away at the sound.
Icestone’s head became flooded with confusion, especially after seeing the shocked look on Draco and his friends’ faces. She slightly tilted her head, trying to figure out what was happening.
Eyeing all the tables at the Great hall one by one - Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, then Slytherin, everything started to make sense when the majority of her housemates had their jaws dropped, eyes towards her.
She couldn’t help but let her jaw drop too.
“Daphne...” she quietly called, trying to avoid everyone else present on the table.
“Bloody hell! I’m so sorry!” The girl agonized, her previously excited mood being replaced with guilt.
____________________
“Oh Godric,” Lee happily murmured, face contorting into a smile.
“What?” Fred, not really monitoring the Slytherin, asked with uncertainty.
“Look over there!” Lee ordered, eyes never leaving the Icestone heir.
After following Lee’s line of sight, Fred turned his attention towards his twin, beaming at him. “She looks shocked. I think she saw George! I think it worked!” he chimed with triumph.
George felt his lips curling into a wide smile.
____________________
Later that day, after Y/N’s last class with Professor McGonagall for transfiguration was dismissed, just before the girl headed back towards the dungeons, her arm was grabbed and she was pulled into an empty hallway.
Truthfully, the Slytherin felt like everything was a blur ever since the day started. Especially after breakfast at the Great hall.
Therefore, she wasn’t really focused on everything that was around her, causing her to grab her wand from her robes and point it at the intruder.
“Relax! It’s just me.” George assured, raising both his hands into a surrendering position.
Icestone looked at the boy up and down, keeping her wand away before crossing her arms.
“What do you want?” She mused, tapping her feet impatiently.
The tall Gryffindor furrowed his brows, staring down at the Slytherin. “Why are you so cranky today?” He pondered before shaking his head.
Y/N only gave him a grunt, hissing another “hurry up!” which made George grab the girl’s hand, placing a bag on top of it.
Icestone’s icy orbs stared at the bag. “What’s this?”
“Chocolate chip cookies, your favorite. To cheer you up, somehow,” replied George with a small smile plastered on his face.
George knew why the girl was so out of mood today. It was because she was jealous after rumors about him and Alicia started to spread around the school! And he planned on making her feel better by doing some good deeds. What more deed could be better than gifting the Slytherin her favorite sweets?
The Slytherin’s lips curled into a smirk. “You’re sure these aren’t raisins?” She teased.
“Hey! That was one time!”
Saving from turning the conversation into an awkward one, the girl muttered a quick “Thanks.”
“Good thing your girlfriend doesn’t get mad jealous when you do this kind of stuff with other girls.” Y/N mindlessly added, internally slapping herself at the comment.
She didn’t mean to let those sentences out, Y/N Icestone swears! It was at the tip of her tongue but she usually would’ve swallowed everything in. She didn’t know why words started to flow out of her mouth without any second thoughts.
“Girlfriend?” The Gryffindor repeated, feeling ecstatic on the inside.
George felt like he just won the lottery. Y/N’s statement just confirmed his theory of her being jealous.
“Is she not? People were talking about it though?” The Slytherin quipped, raising a brow.
George just gave a shrug for an answer.
____________________
“You handed her cookies! What is she gonna think now, you stupid git!” Fred grunted, smacking his twin’s arm.
“She thought Alicia was my girlfriend! How fun is that?” replied George.
The older ginger shook his head in disbelief. “Sure, she thought that Alicia was your girlfriend but what kind of boyfriend will she think you’ll be? A boyfriend who goes out of their way to give gifts to their exes?!”
“Oh, Godric! You’re right! That was a stupid move” George agonized, massaging his temples.
Fred gave him a pat on the back, comforting him “It’s fine, Georgie. You’ll do better next time. ”
“If there is a next time.”
“No-”
The painting of the fat lady, which actually served as an entrance towards the Gryffindor common room, suddenly bursts open with an out-of-breath Ron Weasley who looked like he just came running away from a wild elephant together with his best friend, Harry Potter.
At their little brother’s disheveled appearance, the Weasley twins put their conversation to a halt as their attention was directed towards him.
“You would not know what I just heard at Divination class earlier!” Ron gushed, calling over Hermione and Ginny to join in their little circle for him to deliver the information he knew.
“What?” Hermione grunted, annoyed at the ginger for ruining her reading session as well as the thought of the stupid class.
“So you know how Gryffindor and Slytherin are always conveniently in the same class, right?” breathed Ron.
“Of course...they pair us with those snakes as if we’re actually going to get along…” Fred commented, shaking his head.
The 4th year Weasley ignored his brother’s remark and continued on. “Well, when me and Harry entered the room, Malfoy and his lot were talking and it looked serious.”
Ginny raised a brow towards his brother. “So, being the nosy boy you are, you eavesdropped?” She interrogated, displeased.
“Ginny, it looked important. I had to know because what if one of us is involved? What if they’re planning another thing that could hurt George?” Ron reasoned before raising his right hand to swat the air.
“But anyway, I heard Zabini scolding Malfoy. I know, hard to believe right? But he said something like the entirety of the Slytherin house finding out Malfoy’s most important secret.”
All the people included in their little bubble gave a small nod, acknowledging the young Weasley, getting more and more curious.
“And?” George pressed on, making Ron look directly into his eyes.
“I heard what the secret was!” He rejoiced, being proud of himself.
“They really should have kept their voices lower.” He added.
“Just get to the point, Ronald!” Exclaimed Hermione, clearly getting annoyed by the lack of information.
“Y/N Icestone is betrothed to Draco Malfoy.”

Rivals (Severus Snape x Reader)
Rivals young!Severus Snape x Reader Warning: bullying
New fandom. I'm a little bit worried about this fandom because I'm definitely not a hardcore Potterhead, but I have so many ideas for Severus, and I want to share them with you guys.
Y/N and young!Severus are more than just rivals.
Tumblr media
When you first stepped into the castle with a bunch of other kids around you, waiting for the Sorting ceremony, you knew your life would change forever, and you have to give your best. You were full of eagerness to learn and want to prove yourself in front of your teachers and fellow students. The Hat sorted you into Ravenclaw, you got to know the castle and your teachers, and you made friends as the months and years went by. You became the captain of your Quidditch team, and despite the endless training and matches, you are still one of the best-graded students.
You only have one headache.
Severus Snape.
The boy is tall and lanky, and you never see his face without his black hair he uses as a curtain. He has a few friends, but your circle of friends never mixes with his. He is quiet and stoic. The only times you hear him speaking loud and clear when he is arguing with you about an answer or a test.
Even before you knew, you were rivals. The fact that you are the captain of your team helps you a lot with your results, but while you are horrible at potions, Severus is talented and hard-working. At first, the competition existed only in your head, but as the years went by, you noticed the boy’s annoyed expression whenever you had better grades than him.
After six years of competition, you came to the point when you had to admit to yourself you will never beat each other. Since then, you look at it as a game. Severus keeps you on your toes, and sometimes you just tease him for fun. After years of staring at him arguing with you about something, you noticed he is rather cute. He has thin but kissable lips, and his pale skin becomes reddish from anger whenever you tell him you are the smarter one. You enjoy your encounters even if you don't know about Severus’s opinion.
You sit in the garden, hoping for some fresh air before your next class when you start to hear voices and laughs. At first, you want to ignore it and read over your notes, but the shouts get louder, and the word Snivellus pushes everything else out of your mind. You stand up from your bench to follow the noises till you see the sources.
Severus tries to gather his books and notes from the ground while the Marauders tower over him, laughing and guffawing. You see Severus’s torn potion book in Potter’s hands, and you see his mouth moves, but you can’t hear him because of the others. Pettigrew hits Sirius's shoulder when he says something funny, and Severus makes sure they don’t see his expression behind his black hair.
You are not the only one who comes to see the ruckus. People start to stand in a circle around them until you can’t see anything but their backs. You hear their cheers as Severus’s humiliation continues.
Your first thought is maybe you shouldn’t intervene, it’s not your business, and you still can call a teacher for help, but as these thoughts run over your head, you get angry at yourself. Could you really let the poor boy here? If you do it, you aren’t different from the people who have fun while the Gryffindors hurt him.
He is smart and, despite your interactions mostly about arguing, he always helps you on potions even when you tell him you don’t need them.
You grab your bag to place it over your shoulder and start to run into the crowd. You struggle through the people until you arrive in the circle. Severus still struggles with his books while the other four make sure to entertain their audience.
“Y/N,” Potter calls you as he notices you stepping out of the crowd. Severus’s head snaps up in a panic, hearing your name. “Just in time!”
“No!” Severus start to argue, but his words are meaningless for the boy who walks next to you.
“Look at this!” He shoves the potion book into your hand. “You have a secret admirer,” he laughs.
Severus’s handwriting is messy, but you can still read your name in a heart-shaped drawing. You have to force yourself not to smile at it, looking over and over again your name.
“Who thought Snivellus has feelings?” Sirius asks loud enough for others to hear, and he gets his reward in laughs and cheers.
“Shut up!” You shout at him, closing the book in your hands. Your skin is hot from embarrassment and excitement. “You shouldn’t be jealous, Black,” you continue, stepping next to Severus to help him gather his things. “You don’t have a brain and feelings but don’t give up, maybe a few years, and you will look like a man.”
“You shouldn’t stand up for a worm. It’s not good for your reputation,” Pettigrew says.
“You shouldn’t open your disgusting mouth,” you snarl. “It’s not good for your nonexistent reputation. And if you ever hurt him again, I make sure my potion will eat you alive.”
You and Severus the only ones who know you would do it because of an accident and not knowledge. You grab the boy’s arm to help him steady himself as you pull him through the crowd.
“Are you okay?” You ask him when you get far from the idiots. “Do you need to go to the infirmary?”
“No,” he replies quietly. He is too embarrassed to look at you, but the warmth of your hand on his arm is too good to get out of your touch.
“Come, I know a place,” you tell him, pulling him with you.
The corridors are almost empty. The classes started a few minutes ago, but you don’t care. You have a more important matter to do than Herbology. You're heading to the library because you know, in the middle of the day it'll be empty.
You sit down not far from Severus, and you wait for a few minutes patiently while he repairs his bag and puts back everything in it. His hair still hides his face from you, and your fingers itch to adjust it behind his ears.
“Your book,” you tell him, reaching out his potion book for him. He grabs it out of your hand with hurried movements. You can see his dark eyes and red skin for a moment as you still wait for him patiently. After he packs everything, he stands still, hovering over the table, fidgeting.
“You want to talk about it?” You ask him softly. “I mean… about my name in your book.”
You are sure you will combust if you don’t bring up the topic you want to talk about so much.
“For what?” He asks you angrily. “It’s not your business,” he continues defending himself.
“Well... it’s my name,” you reason. “Come on, Severus! Sit down!” You order him softly, grabbing his arm to sit down next to you. You know you have to be careful. He is embarrassed and humiliated, and he doesn’t know about your feelings for him.
“I’m sorry, okay?” He says. His voice is desperate, and it breaks your heart.
“No, don’t be,” you grab his hand and pull it to your lap. “I like you too,” you confess.
“Don’t play with me,” he tries to move out of your hold, but you don’t let him. His hand feels good in yours. You can almost imagine holding it as you walk to your next class beside the boy.
“I don’t, Severus, I promise,” you reply. You push his hair from his face with your other hand to see his expression. You can see the fear and slight hope on his opened mouth and black eyes.
“But… I thought you hate me,” he whispers.
“I thought you hate me,” you reply with a small smile. “I don’t hate you,” you continue. “You are the only one who smart enough to compete with me among these dunderheads.”
“So… you are not angry? Probably everybody knows about my book by now. They will pick on you too.”
“No, I’m not,” you squeeze his hand with a big inhale. “I like you too,” you repeat to ensure him. “I do for a while now.”
“So… so… it means…” he tries to have an answer for his unsaid questions, and you can’t help but smirk.
He is too cute.
“It means I would like to be your girlfriend."
His eyes shine as he looks up at you finally. His mouth closes and opens repeatedly but can’t utter a word out. His cheeks are still tinted with pink, and you can feel the sweat on his palm. The only thing he can do is nod. His lips are dry, and his throat tightened, looking at your soft expression.
“Come here,” you laugh at his shut down, pulling him closer to you by his tie.
At first, you kiss the corner of his mouth, and when you see he doesn’t against your closeness, you kiss him fully on his lips. He needs a few moments before he finds out what he should do, but you are perfectly fine to leading him. His skin is soft as you caress his cheek, and his lips are warm and taste like tea.
You pull back and look up at him to see his dreamy expression.
His breath is heavy, and in the back of his mind, he still thinks it’s just a prank, but the only thing you do is smile and continue to caress his cheek. He wishes you never stop it.

Day 1: Sharing

AO3 | FF.net
Summary: Toph gets her first taste of Water Tribe cuisine, courtesy of Sokka
******
It had been a few hours since Aang had finally managed to move a rock for the first time, but the way he was excitedly bouncing around the camp, one would think that he had just become Earth Rumble champion.
"It's like I can feel the Earth all around me!" he said, zooming around and touching his feet to as many different rocks as he could. Katara sat by their campfire and smiled at his antics, sewing a damaged piece of clothing back together.
Toph, however, who didn't find the mighty Avatar's childish glee as endearing, just crossed her arms and scowled.
Her new student stopped in front of her, still with that goofy smile. "I'll probably be able to 'see' just by earthbending soon, just like you, Toph!"
"If you don't stop annoying me, the only thing I'll teach you is how to pulverize an annoying bald boy!" Toph snapped at him.
Aang and Katara froze, and Toph could feel Aang's posture deflate, and Katara's muscles tense in a flash of protectiveness. Toph inwardly groaned, knowing she would likely get a lecture.
"Sorry Sifu…" said Aang in a hurt voice.
"Toph!" Katara scolded.
"Sorry! Sorry! Just ignore me," Toph groaned, "I'm just really hungry, when is Sokka going to be back with that fish he promised?"
"Oh, he's probably caught it already and ate it all himself," laughed Katara.
"If you're hungry, there's plenty of stuff to eat around here!" said Aang cheerfully. He reached into his pocket and pulled something out to hold towards Toph. "I foraged for some great lemurberries earlier!"
Toph sniffed the contents of Aang's hand and gagged. "Ugh! What the heck, Twinkle Toes? Those smell like sweaty feet!"
"Hey, my people ate these for centuries!" Aang protested. "They're really good for your heart!"
"My heart's fine, I'm not an old lady," grumbled Toph. "I want some juicy, fatty meat, not some foraged berries like a baby bird."
She sighed and flopped onto her back. "Oh, what I would give for some of Chef Xu's roasted hogchicken…"
Katara looked up from her sewing. "Chef Xu?"
"My family's live-in chef."
"Ha!" said Katara gleefully, "I knew you're not as rough-and-tumble as you make out, you are a rich girl after all!"
"Yeah, the food was pretty much the only thing about life with my parents I liked," Toph admitted. "But they even managed to ruin that, only giving me tiny portions to eat agonizingly slowly, because apparently overeating isn't 'ladylike,'" she added bitterly, "I never got to really pig out the way I wanted to."
She pounded her fist on the ground in frustration, but when she felt the vibrations travel through the interior of one of their packs, she saw something that made her sit up straight and her stomach growl.
"Hey!" she barked at Aang and Katara. "There's meat in that pack, why didn't you two dunderheads tell me!"
Both of their heartbeats suddenly spiked.
"Oh, you don't want to touch that meat, Toph, trust me," said Aang, his voice full of fear. "That's Sokka's stash of seal jerky."
"Ugh, yes, rule number one of traveling with us," Katara groaned sarcastically, "do not touch Sokka's seal jerky, or suffer the consequences."
Toph snorted a laugh. "Consequences? He can't even bend, what's he going to do, whine me to death?"
"I honestly wouldn't put it past him," said Katara.
"He's the one taking so long, he won't miss a few pieces," said Toph. She pulled the pack toward her and started digging for the buried treasure.
Katara stepped forward and put a hand on Toph's shoulder. "Toph, please, don't," she said, her voice more gentle and serious this time. "I give him a hard time for being so uptight about it, but I also get it, you know? For Sokka, that snack is a little piece of home."
Toph froze, sighed, and ignored her loudly protesting stomach when she closed the bag back up and resigned herself to her hunger.
Just a moment later, however, she sat bolt upright. "Finally! Sokka's back!"
Katara jumped up and her hand went to her bending pouch. "Are you sure it's him?"
"Of course I am!"
Toph hadn't known Sokka for long, but there was already no mistaking those footsteps. Sokka walked with a confidence that couldn't be faked to Toph's feet. Despite his outwardly goofy, spastic demeanor, Sokka walked with the grace of someone in complete control of their body, through training that he clearly took far more seriously than he let on. Not even the cocky Earth Rumblers Toph used to fight would walk like that. Toph found it oddly fascinating, and found herself getting excited whenever she felt him walking towards her.
She was even more excited this time, because she felt that his gait had shifted, to accommodate a heavy weight he was carrying.
"Oh, please tell me that fish is as big as it feels!" said Toph, her mouth watering.
"I'm pretty sure I just snagged the Unagi's brother," boasted Sokka. "Sorry if you've been going crazy. Did Aang try to feed you some of his rabbiroo food?"
"Hey!" said Aang.
"Yes, he shoved his hand in my face with a handful of those stinky berries," said Toph, as if Aang wasn't there. "But you were taking so long I actually did consider eating it. Not the berries, mind you, his hand. That at least would be meat."
Sokka erupted into laughter as he started cleaning the fish, making Toph smile to herself proudly. Then, he suddenly looked up and snapped his fingers.
"Oh, monkey feathers! I forgot, we already have meat!" Sokka apologized to Toph. "You've never had seal jerky, have you? I got some in my pack, you've got to try some, it will change your life."
"What!?" said Katara sharply. "You bite my head off if I even sniff that jerky, but have no problem sharing with Toph?"
"You have had more than your share of my jerky from stealing it your entire life," said Sokka, glaring at his sister. "Go on, Toph, have a bite while I get the fire going. It's in a sealskin pouch in my pack."
"You think I know what sealskin feels like?" asked Toph.
"Right. Sorry," said Sokka awkwardly. He sat down next to her and dug out the snack and handed it to her. As he moved to get back up, Toph grabbed at his sleeve to stop him.
"You sure this is okay?" she asked. She dropped her voice, not sure if she was supposed to know what Katara had told her. "Katara said this was really important to you. Like it's your little piece of home."
Sokka tensed, apparently surprised by her sincerity, but then hummed thoughtfully.
"Well….yeah, I guess it is," he said. "But that's part of why I want you to try some. It's like showing you a bit of my home. We can't exactly fly back to the South Pole and let me show you how amazing it is, so we'll have to make do."
The idea of Sokka being excited to share his home and culture with her — possibly introducing her to his family — caused a strange feeling in Toph's stomach, and she didn't know what to say.
"So Katara's hit her jerky limit," said Toph, "Did you ever offer any to Aang?"
Sokka thought for a moment. "No, I don't think so. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, since he's a vegetarian, but I don't think it ever occurred to me, even before I knew that."
He elbowed her in the arm playfully. "I guess he's just not as cool as you."
With that, he got up and resumed his task of preparing the fish. Toph suddenly felt her face growing hot, and hoped she wasn't catching a fever.
Deciding she just needed sustenance, she took out a piece of jerky from Sokka's pouch and bit into it.
It was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted.

~~~ * ~~~ * ~~~ * ~~~ * ~~~
Severus stood in front of his shelves of books, looking for new titles to introduce into the curriculum but none caught his eye. He ran his finger along the spines, dust coming off each one in a long streak and collected under his nail. They were all worn, their binding fabric once rich in texture now flush and smooth as the hard cover underneath. Their once-golden names rubbed off from excessive obsessive use from years of studies during and after his time as a Hogwarts student. His eyes followed his finger as he tried reading the titles, hoping one would spark a memory of a passage easy enough for his students to grasp.
I should introduce the Odd-Stir Method to the fifth years after winter holidays. I think Rotus explains it best – though I doubt they’d be able to get over his outdated terminology… I’d have to give them translation sheets though… Perhaps E. K Nimgo uses more appropriate language… even the densest of dunderheads should be able to understand her phrasing.
He’d reached the very last shelf and stood, clutching only two books from his collection and sighed, not entirely certain that his efforts to make brewing easier would even be appreciated. He wiped his finger on the rough fabric of his black vest and sighed, realizing he’d just created a very visible grey streak across his chest.
He heard a soft giggle and looked up, blushing at the beautiful woman leaning on the doorframe to the kitchen, watching him intently. Severus smiled and shook his hair to cover his face. He tapped the books in his hand with his finger, trying to draw her attention away from him in embarrassment. “Should I even try this year?”
She pushed herself from the doorframe and walked over to him slowly with a finger tapping her chin as if in thought. She slid her hands under his arms and pushed her face into his shoulder blade. “No – In fact, maybe take a break from teaching and stay here with me this year.” She’d been begging him for several weeks now as their summer fun was coming to an end.
He wanted so badly to say yes… But Dumbledore won’t allow it. It’s still too soon after… He sighed. He ran his hand along her arm and pulled it away, freeing himself to face her. “Help me pack these?” Her smile dropped and he almost winced. “You know I’ll just throw them in,” he whispered.
She nodded and gave a slight smile. “You’re so awful at packing, Sev.” She took the books from his hands and planted a kiss on his unready lips. Her smile widened at his look of joyous surprise and laughed. “You act like a schoolboy receiving his first ever kiss every time I do that.”
He pressed his palm to his mouth until he felt his stupid smile fade and frowned at her, removing his hand. “I do not. Besides… it’s hardly my fault.” He placed his hands on her hips and pulled her in for a proper kiss. He let his lips linger on hers and made sure to speak low, just how she liked. “I can’t control what you do to me.”
She bit her lip and pulled her chin down, looking up at him with innocent eyes that sparkled wickedly at him. Merlin help me. He slid his hands down her sides and played with the hem of her skirt, loving the invisible sparks of lust and tension popping in the air.
The flames of the candles scattered around the room flickered under the influence of their accidental magic, brought on by their subconscious need to dim the lights and set their favorite evening mood. His living room had never held any romance to it until her. It was the one room in the house whose floors were maintained perfectly clean. It was the one room where they constantly found themselves on the floor of.
A soft tapping from the kitchen pulled his eyes away from hers. Merlin, I didn’t mean literally. He sighed. “I have to answer back.”
She dropped her arms that had snaked their way around his neck and folded them over her chest. “I’ll go pack these into your trunk.”
He watched her march out of the room and listened to her footfall on the stairs, heavy with anger. The door to their room slammed and he headed into the kitchen. A large brown owl sat on the rim of the empty potted plants outside and tapped its beak to the window again.
“Silence already!” Severus swung the window open and took the letter from the owl’s beak. “Tell that man if he wishes to be enraging he’s doing a fine job. Next time he hands you a letter, wait for the next one.”
He tore the envelope open and read the fourth letter sent to him that day. ‘I forgot to remind you the lists will be sent out next week, though if you have the required textbooks ready, the sooner the better this year.’ Severus pinched the bridge of his nose and walked back into the living room, scribbled the title of the textbook his students had been using for the last three years and folded it up, not bothering with a new envelope.
He marched back to the owl and held the note out for it to take. “Try not to come back – or better yet, get lost on the way.”
It hooted and took the note, tapping the window once more for the apparent pure satisfaction of seeing Severus scowl and fluttered away. He closed the window with a tight snap and pulled the curtains closed. He headed out of the kitchen and looked around.
Where is she? It was around this time he’d normally sit down to read at his chair, only to be interrupted and asked to join her on the small couch instead so she could lean on him while she entertained herself with her own books – or on busy days, her work.
Severus crossed the room and headed into the foyer, stopping at the bottom of the stairs. He called out her name and listened. Silence.
He looked down at the long rug covering the center of the staircase. She’d found it on sale a couple of weeks ago and bought it for ‘the house’ claiming she was tired of the loud clomping of shoes on the stairs. Looking at the rug – along with the new matching towels and pillows and cushions for the couch – had made his chest feel unpleasantly tight for the first few days… Now he always felt a slight smile coming on when he noticed them. It was her way of moving in, knowing full well he was too scared to ask her to live with him in his grotty hovel of a house.
He headed up the steps and opened the door to their bedroom. She was laying on his side of the bed, face down on his pillow, with his books left out on his cluttered night stand. Her shoulders shook with silent sobs. He closed the door behind him and stood awkwardly at the end of the bed for a few seconds.
This is all my fault. If I’d never… Merlin. I regret everything but you. “I’m sorry,” Severus whispered.
She pushed herself up onto her forearms and turned to him, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. “Oh Sev. Please don’t go… You’ll be gone for so long – ten months! I’m going to miss you so much! It’s going to be so hard not coming home to you every day… Everything’s going to be so much harder without you around.” She closed her eyes and fell back onto his pillow, shaking more violently than before. “Who’s going to make me soup after I finish ranting about how awful my boss is?”
He could barely make out her muffled attempt to lighten the mood and smirked, trying not to feel the growing hurt of seeing her so upset. Severus moved to the side of the bed, holding in tears that mirrored her pain, and kicked the open trunk away. He knelt on the bed and pushed her on to her side, holding her tight the moment she sat up for a hug.
He stroked her hair and bit his lip. “It only seems hard now.” He swallowed thickly. “Trust me, you’ll forget you even want me around.” He forced out a chuckle. “You might even forget I exist.”
Her hands clawed his back, pulling him closer. He let her pull him onto the bed, careful not to crush her with his weight, and allowed her arms to keep him in her sweet embrace. She was still crying into his neck and all he could do was kiss her head and press his hands into her back, pulling himself closer. As much as his heart broke when she cried, a small part of him warmed at the idea of being wanted so bad it hurt.
He was used to his brain turning on him, trying to convince him she didn’t actually care for him, despite checking to make sure he’d eaten when she got back from work, asking how he’d slept every morning, and every other little show of affection. It often times told him the small frown she wore was because of him, something he’d done wrong, despite her whole face brightening at the sight of him. All summer he’d felt like he was sitting on the edge of his seat, dreading the day she’d wake from her trance and leave him. It was hard to accept his luck when all his life he’d had anything but that.
And now here she was under him, crying over the pain she swears she’ll feel not seeing him every day… and he can’t help but want to cry over just being loved so openly and plainly. He felt guilty.
It won’t last. He closed his eyes and held her closer to him, attempting to focus on her rugged breaths of sorrow and not the cruel words ringing in his ears. We’ve only spent three months together, no one could ever feel this way for me in such a small amount of time… Not me… Not Snivellus… Not ever.
She’ll forget about me after the first month apart – less even. I’ll only cause her pain for a handful of weeks and then… then she’ll be perfectly fine without me. He pulled away as her sobs calmed and kissed her smooth salty lips with the same longing he knew he’d feel the whole almost ten long months without her. “Everything will seem normal in a matter of months. I promise you won’t feel this for long.”
She wiped her eyes and gently pushed him off her, curling up to his side and shook her head. “No. It’ll hurt this bad and worse.” She sniffed and draped her arm over his middle, pulling him closer. “Will you go over the plan again?”
He nodded. “We’ll write letters every day. You’ll visit me every weekend at the Three Broomsticks. And twice on as many weekends as I can.”
She lifted her head and kissed his chin. When she pulled away, she was finally smiling up to her eyes behind her glimmering tears. “Promise me?”
The way she looked at him, with love and hope and need, made him want to melt on the spot. I promise you anything. He swallowed. “Of course.”
She pulled away and she was no longer smiling, instead searching his eyes for something. “I really will miss you, Sev.”
He nodded and sat up, feeling the strange tightness in his chest again. He felt goosebumps on his arm despite feeling no chills, and his shirt seemed oddly restricting again. “I’ll make us dinner. Anything you wish.” He kissed her cheek and turned away, swinging his legs over the bed. He stood and crossed the room to the door, opened it, and left, giving her just enough time to mumble ‘something creamy’ before he closed the door with a snap.
Severus stood over his trunk and started unpacking his things. The chamber was quiet and cold with new shining webs decorating the corners and connecting rows upon rows of glass jars. The fireplace cracked in the corner, vaguely illuminating the cavity he called his office, filling the air with the scents of cherry firewood, thickly sweet.
I should thank her for the new wood. She’ll surely gloat about being right, though just imagining her smiling is enough to be worth it. Severus grinned to himself and took out a folded piece of parchment where he’d been keeping notes on what to send in his letters since he’d left her at Kings Cross station. He jotted down the ‘thank you for the new fire wood’ she’d snuck into his trunk to help him relax and slipped it back into his vest.
“Ah, Severus. Finally here I see,” McGonagall’s voice echoed in. She stood on the threshold with hands on her hips, looking around at the state of things. “You’re normally on the first train back – You will be dusting won’t you? I’d give you my spell, but as you so kindly pointed out last year, it’s inelegant wording might disorganize your… ‘systemized assortment of components’… or as I call it – clutter.”
Severus rolled his eyes and faced her. “I had business.”
She arched her brow. “I see. Well welcome back, and I suggest you get started with Poppy soon, unfortunately several vials went bad over the summer – something about cheap valerian and the Ministry’s fat pockets – she’s been raging about it since she arrived. Afterwards I think Pomona’s having trouble reviving her oleanders.”
Severus nodded and waited until the crisp clacking of her heels could no longer be heard before gathering what he needed and headed out to his usual pre-term duties as the school’s only Potions Master.
After a long night of replenishing the hospital’s stocks, an early morning brewing Come-’Round serum, and an annoying evening spent with Sprout and her plants, dinner rolled around and he hardly noticed the maddening levels of screaming and laughing and talking coming from the house tables full of old and new students.
“Severus,” McGonagall drew his sleepy attention to her. “Albus mentioned you expressed an interest in taking over monitoring the corridors at night.” She took a sip from her goblet.
Severus frowned. “I mentioned the need to double down on dawn and dusk hours. Not – ”
“That is a marvelous idea. I’m sure you will keep plenty of nosy students out of trouble this year.” She sipped her goblet again.
Severus blinked several times at her. “D-did you just hand over the entire position to me?”
She continued drinking as if he hadn’t spoken and turned back to her food, glancing over at him every so often to check if he was still glaring at her.
Severus grumbled to himself and turned back to his food. I miss ONE meeting and suddenly every tedious responsibility is handed off to me. Of course.
Soon the Great Hall was emptied of students as their prefects led them to their houses and Severus prepared himself for a short night’s rest. He spent three hours walking between corridors from one house entrance to the next, catching at least five students out after hours walking about the castle in the dead of night, and two in the early hours before the sun rose.
He sat back at the high table with a groan and stretched out his legs. The morning light filtered through the tessellated windows high above the tables and reflected off the maple-glazed sausages and glittering butter that melted over his toast.
A familiar wood owl soared down and landed on the top rail of his chair, hooting happily with an elegantly ribbon-wrapped note clutched tight in his foot. Severus suppressed a grin, keeping his usual scowl plastered over his face, and took the note, quickly unraveling it from its pink satin bindings.
My dearest Severus,
You have not replied to the letter I sent yesterday. How was the train ride and our first night apart in months? I missed you more than you could ever imagine. You said I’d be glad to have the bed to myself, but for the second night in a row I have missed your warmth and your embrace. I fear to even wash the sheets and erase your all too alluring scent… Although I will. When did we last wash them? A week ago? Please fake your death and come back to me.
Love,
Your already forgotten girlfriend.
‘Girlfriend’, his heart skipped as his eyes reread the word. He felt a strange forgotten ache deep in his core, of sleepless nights as a student wondering if he’d ever have someone to call his. It was within these very stone walls that he’d muttered curses under his breath at any student that pointed out the fact he was alone and would forever be alone. He’d been wrong, and it was a pain he wished he could go back and relieve from his younger self. He took out his quill, flipped the note over and smoothed it’s curves on the dark oak table.
2 September
My unforgettable girlfriend,
I’ve officially taken over monitoring the corridors at night. It seems McGonagall is trying to remedy my insomnia with hours of walking the halls like a soul-lost mummy in the deep caverns of Khufu’s temple. I caught seven just last night, and apparently my reprimands were deemed ‘unfair’ and ‘dumb’ by these pests we call students.
Severus
He paused.
Also, thank you for the logs. They were nice, but I will switch them out soon for something more menacing.
He folded the note and handed it back to her owl, who had been intently watching his quill feather jitter as he wrote. Her owl took the note in its beak and joined the dozens of other owls leaving through the windows.
Although the letter had suppressed his stress for a few minutes, it soon bubbled back up as the bells rang for the start of lessons. As he’d expected, none of the students had done an ounce of studying over the summer, resulting in the floors being covered in melted stirring rods, the high ceilings dripping with fluorescent watery syrup, and six cracked cauldrons from high-tempered concoctions.
But of course I’M the one writing to the ministry about replacing six cauldrons. If it were up to me, each one of those brats responsible would be writing apology letters begging for new cauldrons themselves. He started writing out the letter towards the Ministry’s Educational Mayhem Funds Committee explaining the need for new ones and how he would supposedly prevent the need for more. Perhaps suggesting teaching dogs instead is not a reasonable approach.
He skipped dinner and by the time it was a quarter to nine, he set out patrolling the corridor and this time checked every broom-closet twice. He slept, and by dawn was up again, pacing floors until the smell of eggs and citrus filled the passageways, wafting in from the kitchen vents.
Breakfast, he sighed. He made his way down and took his usual seat. At some point between his first and second poached egg-topped buttered crumpet the familiar aspen-feathered owl landed on his chair, delivering a newly ribboned note.
My hardworking boyfriend,
I do not envy those under your authority. I’m sure in the coming week, everyone will remember how strictly you rule the corridors and classrooms and will choose to stop breaking the rules. Perhaps slapping the desk harder while you yell will really make them quiver in their shoes. Speaking of heavy hands… will I see you at the end of this week? I miss visiting Hogsmeade and especially the butterbeer from the Three Broomsticks. This weekend will be a MUCH needed break from work and everything that reminds me of my boss’s red warty face. He’s driving me mad. Come down and hex him for me, won’t you Sev?
Yours always,
A previous pest.
Severus chuckled and replied immediately.
Do not tease, especially since the weekend is two days away – it feels like a lifetime when imprisoned within these walls. I shall see about a room at the Three Broomsticks. Regardless, Saturday for lunch. Noon exactly.
Severus
He handed the owl her note and stuffed the new ribbon in his pocket with the other. ‘Heavy hands’. He pressed his elbows to the table and his fists to his growing grin. He was sure Sprout would let him pick a few of her bluebonnets to take with him. It’d be a lovely surprise he was sure she’d more than appreciate.
He pushed away from the table and made his way out of the Great Hall towards the dungeons. His first lesson of the day was in a few hours. The first years are probably running Pomphrey dry on the Dreamless Sleep elixir. She’ll likely ask me about it this weekend… If I get started on it now –
The library doors opened and a shrill voice called out to him. “Oh! Professor Snape!” The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher came marching up to him with a determined look about her. “I was told to seek your advice – Professor if you have the time.”
Severus kept from rubbing at his temples and breathed out in what almost sounded like a groan. “In what are you seeking council?”
The new professor shook her head, her large bun bobbing from side to side, and placed her hands on her hips. “The library does not stock extra copies of the books I have assigned as required textbooks. I was told you’d had this problem when you first began teaching?”
Do not remind me. “Ah… yes. The library will not stock books outside the Ministry’s recommended reading. You could try convincing… Dumbledore,” the word rolled off his tongue distastefully. “But the Headmaster prefers leaving it up to the professors to figure out.” Severus turned to leave.
The woman laughed. “Is that your advice? Figure it out myself?”
Severus turned back and narrowed his eyes. “If the books you are seeking… are not stocked. Then they are not from the list the Ministry has provided you – as I’m sure you know, as we receive updated lists every summer. That means either your book is considered too dangerous – ”
“It’s not! I would hardly call unicorns and counter-clockwise counting clocks dangerous when – ”
“Or,” Severus interrupted, lowering his voice to a dangerous whisper. “They are too expensive. If some students cannot afford the textbooks, then it is your job to provide them or incorporate them into a learning plan.” Severus turned on his heels and started walking briskly down the dungeon stairs.
“And am I supposed to make a learning plan after term has already begun!”
He kept walking without turning back. “That IS the situation you find yourself in. Yes,” he yelled back. How many more of these incompetent teachers will Hogwarts endure before Dumbledore allows me the position? Talk about maddening ‘bosses’.
Severus hadn’t even sat in his chair for more than a few minutes before his fireplace burned with flames alit with minor Floo powder.
“Severus.” McGonagall’s voice drawled from within the flames.
Severus pinched his eyes closed. “Minerva,” he hissed.
“As much as I enjoy watching new teachers flop around from task to task, it is not me that applies for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position every summer. Perhaps showing some initiative would propel Albus to take you more seriously next year.”
He could hear the amused smile in her voice. He seethed in his chair for a minute. “Last time I ‘showed initiative’ I was given the whole bloody task. I am NOT filling my schedule with her poor attempt at education.” He thought for a moment. “Unless.”
McGonagall sighed. “What do you want, Severus.”
“I will be gone this weekend. Saturday and Sunday… And sometimes other weekends as well.”
The bright green flames flickered over the cherry firewood and a log fell, sparking tinier flames for a few seconds before the larger ones engulfed them.
“Alright.”
The fire cracked and then died down to the normal short flames that he liked. Well that solves that.
Severus stared at the densely grown purple wildflowers that filled the smallest planter in the greenhouse. The cool blues and purples of the bonnet-shaped petals made his mouth turn up in a smile, mirroring the very same one he knew he’d receive if he showed up to his date with these in hand. He clipped diagonal cuts into the stems and wrapped them in the two ribbons he’d kept from her letters. The pure pink of the ribbons shined brightly among the mellow blues of the flowers. Perfect.
Severus carefully tucked the bouquet in his inner cloak pocket and headed out towards the gate. Not feet from the door of the greenhouse he heard Madam Pomphrey calling his name from the castle doors.
“Ah! Severus! Glad to catch you before you left.” She waited for Severus to approach her. “The first years have just about drained my supplies of Dreamless Sleep. Minerva suggested having some flown in from that new shop across from Zonkos but I refuse to give the students anything I wouldn’t just make myself.”
Then why have ME make it? Severus sighed. “Of course… I’ll have that for you Monday.”
“No sooner?”
Severus refrained from frowning. “No sooner.” He turned – noticing Pomphrey’s eyes glancing down at the purple pollen smudged on his black cloak – and headed towards the gate.
Hogsmeade was busier now than it was when Hogsmeade trips started for students. He guessed it was because there was only one month during the year where there were no loud and screaming children bumping into people out on the streets or taking up unnecessary room in shops. If he’d realized just how pact the day would be, he’d have suggested meeting in the room he had gotten instead of out on the street.
He sat on one of the benches near the Three Broomsticks and took out his small journal, hunching over to see his small writing. On Mondays and Wednesdays I can help plan defense lessons in the mornings, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays will have to be in the evenings, so those days will have to be plans for the following day which means this Monday or Wednesday I’ll have to help plan two lessons… Sunday I can get back early… I’ll only be able to brew a fourth of the stock… I can catch up on it next Sunday if my visits with her are just Saturdays… at least for only a week or two. He quickly scribbled down his plans.
Two hands pulled his hair up out of his eyes, and he found himself staring at a pair of shiny heels. He trailed his eyes up her legs and looked up, squinting at her smiling face already diving down for a kiss on his forehead.
“Sorry I’m late.”
Severus quickly stood and took out the flowers he’d picked just for her.
She smiled so bright her eyes glowed with delight. “Sev!” She took them and jumped onto him, clinging onto his neck.
He felt his face go red and cleared his throat, acutely aware of just a few stares pointed their way. She didn’t let go of him, however. She held on tight and all he wanted was to breath her in so desperately. To pick her up and twirl her and never let go, but there were so many people. He forced a simple hug and pulled her away. The room! It should be available already.
“What’s that little smile on your face for?” She arched a brow, hugging her flowers tight.
Severus bent down and pushed her silky hair behind her ear, gently tracing his lips on the soft ridges of her ear. “Room? Now?” Am I a barbarian? I haven’t seen her all week and all I can muster are two single-syllable words? He pulled back and watched as her teeth bit down her plump lower lip.
“Take me away, Severus,” she whispered.
His brain had turned into dense fog and all he could think to do was nod and take her hand, leading her inside. He slinked past groups of people thunderously enjoying their early morning drinks and up the stairs, gripping her hand tight, making sure not to lose out on a single second of feeling her skin on his.
He pulled out his key and slipped it in the lock, turning it until it clicked, and opened the door. The room had a single bed and closed curtains, which was really all they would need tonight. What if she was expecting something better? He couldn’t afford any of the nicer, larger rooms available.
He turned and watched her saunter in, paying no attention to the room and only to him as he closed the door with his heel. Her intense sultry eyes eyed him up and down as she bit her lip, taking him in like a cold sweet treat left out for her to have on a hot summer’s day. His face went red again, and he could remember the feel of her hands all over him, begging him to give himself to her to do with at her whim.
Did she lick her lips? He swallowed.
“My Severus,” she whispered.
Mind blank, he lunged for her lips and they both fell onto the bed. His hands roamed over the fabric of her dress, outlining her figure with a yearning need. She moaned and squirmed under him, making his temperature rise with desire. In one swift move, she had him pinned down, her knees straddling his hips. Her lips teased light bruises onto his neck and a deep moan escaped his mouth.
Before the new hour had even struck, they were already under the covers in an embrace deeper than ever before. Physically, the positions were the same, needy and wild; emotionally, his soul couldn’t get enough. Her scent, her touch, every minute sound that escaped her lips, breathy or fierce, sent a fire down his body. He’d missed her so much.
“Severus!” she moaned in his ear, holding him down with a shaky grip. Her body tensed with pleasure and finally relaxed onto him, limp with euphoria.
He shivered and closed his eyes, keeping the same steady rhythm that had undone her. His hands gripped her hips and pushed her down as his heels dug into the mattress and his own hips pressed up. She was huffing in his ear, moaning, whimpering. And with the same sudden flowing energy, he followed in her pleasure. He wrapped his arms around her as the waves washed over him and hugged her tight as their breaths caught and their rhythmic movements ceased, fully satisfied.
He smiled and chuckled, laughing louder as her giggles bubbled out as well. “The room was a good idea.”
“I see you can form sentences once again.” She laughed and pushed herself up to kiss his face.
He blushed, wishing she hadn’t noticed how utterly speechless her presence had left him in only a single week of not seeing her. “Yes – well – ” Merlin, a sentence! Finish a sentence. He cleared his throat. “Lunch? Er – Would you like to send for some lunch to have in here?”
She bit her lip, poorly hiding a wide grin, and nodded. “You can go order for me. I’ll be right back.” She took her clothes and headed into the bathroom, leaving the door ajar like she always did before a shower.
He dressed quickly, headed down to the bar and ordered two meals and a few drinks. It only took a few minutes to receive his order despite the crowd of wizards and witches sitting at tables talking with friends. He flicked his wand and the meal led the way back up the stairs and into the room.
The rest of the day was spent eating and laughing on the bed, talking about mainly her work or things she’d added to his house – or ‘the’ house as they had been ‘sneakily’ calling it. He liked it, maybe this summer it could be ‘our’ house. After several drinks and hours spent in each other’s arms, they got ready for bed.
Severus wrapped his arms around her, squeezing them between the mattress and her back, and rested his head on her chest. He closed his eyes as she played with his long hair, curled it in her fingers, and smoothed it out with her palm. Within seconds sleep seeped into every corner of his mind.
~ * ~ * ~
Although breaking the news that he had to leave early that Sunday had soured their last hours together, Severus felt far more relaxed as the week went on. His memories of her warmth and softness were renewed and he could put more focus into his work, knowing what the ends of the weeks would more or less look like now.
Of course he had told her that the following weekend date would have to be canceled if only to ensure that the rest would remain free. He still had potions to restock in the hospital wing that took several days to brew single batches. And that lesson plan, he grumbled to himself.
The full week that followed had felt like one long trek up a mountain, only to reach the peak and see more mountain to climb. The weekend was spent slumped over one of his brewing tables with an elbow dug into the wood and his head glued to his palm. He stirred and stirred for hours, waited for the potion to turn purple, and then stirred for longer.
He ran his hands through his hair, trying to replicate the feel of her fingers brushing through his greasy tendrils, and sighed, wiping his hand on his trousers. The room was quiet except for the slow pop of bubbles and he knew if she’d been in the room he’d have had to demand she leave, unable to brew under the tight squeeze of her hugs. He lifted his head off his palm and wrapped his arm around his middle, hugging himself close as his other hand stirred.
Once the tall jars were filled and stoppered, he walked them down to Madam Pomphrey’s office and headed to dinner. His eyes narrowed on a group of students suspiciously whispering to each other. Hufflepuffs. It was no coincidence dessert tonight was the Hufflepuff favorite, honey-stuffed bear biscuits. Their house door was only a corridor away from the kitchens and there was always left overs of this particular dessert for some reason. Sprout denied having anything to do with it, Of course.
He waited in his office watching the clock and smiled as the hands marked the start of After Hours. He stood and smoothed out his teaching robe, preparing for an eventful night of patrolling. He started with the other houses first, going from top floors to the bottom, and allowing the Hufflepuffs plenty of time.
He finished his dungeon rounds and headed up to the main corridor. He crossed it with a light stroll, and turned the few corners into the Hufflepuff and kitchen passageway. The kitchen door was left ajar, and a creamy warm light seeped into the shadows. Severus stalked through the dark and pushed the heavy kitchen door wider, observing the chaos in secret.
Six Hufflepuffs stuffed the cookies into sheer golden bags and tied them around their hips by the stings like valued coin. Two were reaching for the jars of deep golden syrup placed high above cabinets while the others overloaded the biscuits with slices of grilled pear chunks.
He stepped into the kitchen and held his hands behind his back, glaring at the back of their heads. He could see their shoulders tense one by one until they all stopped their movements and turned around ever so slowly.
Severus licked his lips and lowered his voice to a growl. “Detentions. Scrubbing cauldrons and boiling devilpods.” Severus flicked his wand and every last treat disappeared from their sticky hands. He marched them to their house door and slammed it hard behind them.
He was half way to his office when it suddenly dawned on him. Six detentions? Where in Merlin’s shiny bald head would he fit six hours of detention supervision in his schedule? His hands fisted at his sides and an angry growl roared out of him into the darkness.
“Shhh!” A portrait hushed from up the nearest stairs.
Potions. Severus stalked down the dungeons stairs. Lesson Plans. He threw his office door open. Detentions! He slammed the door shut and glared as a jar threatened to topple off his shelf. “When does it end!” he snarled.
It was two weeks into the first term and his patience had already run dry. If he wasn’t going to see her this weekend either, then there was no reason to hold out on punishments for misbehaving brats. There was no more scraping the bottom of the barrel for mercy for any student or coworker.
His words dripped with venom, his actions were sharp, and what little restraint he had shriveled and died. Everywhere he went the whispers followed, ‘Careful, Professor Snape is coming this way.’
20 September
Of course. Next weekend it is then. I miss you, Sev.
Yours Always
Severus sighed and pinched his eyes closed. The guilt in his gut had clawed its way into his veins and was now circulating his whole body, making him cold with worry. This was the second weekend he canceled on her and after expecting anger, she’d delivered a short but loving message showing how much patience she had for him.
20 September
I’m sorry. I miss you too. I’m sorry, truly.
Yours, Severus
He handed his reply to one of the school owls in the owlry and watched it fly off into the greying sky. The wind was chilly as it brushed passed his nose and hair, sending goosebumps down his arms. He stuck his hands in his pockets and squeezed his eyes shut as more guilt shivered up his core. She hadn’t yet mentioned the fact he wasn’t replying every day to her letters anymore, and that made him all the more scared. Was that her way of telling him she had expected he wouldn’t keep up with his promise?
Merlin, I’m an awful boyfriend. He forced a trembling laugh. Couples were supposed to hug and kiss and lay in each other’s arms and talk often weren’t they? He didn’t know anymore. It had seemed so easy over the summer. He’d felt so proud when she called him her boyfriend, especially when he knew he was doing everything right. Bringing her flowers, helping her with work, complimenting her every morning and night before and after work. He’d felt he earned the title.
But I don’t deserve it now. He barely talked to her, had broken all his promises, kept canceling on her, I keep disappointing her. He began walking down the spiraling stairs down the owlry, hardly taking in his surroundings, mind haunted by his past. Words floated in his head, voices that made him tense with rage. ‘Stop lookin’ Snivellus. You’ll never find a girl who’ll ever want you.’ The walk from the owlry to the dungeons was a tormented blur.
His office glowed green as the fireplace flames waved on an old burnt log, an inch high and ready to fizzle out. He wiped his nose on his sleeve and picked up one of the cherry wood cuts. He wrapped his arms around it and carried it into his room, placed it in the fireplace, and shot red sparks from his wand into it.
It caught fire instantly and soon a thick sweet scent filled the air. He wrapped his cloak around himself, still feeling the cold chill from the outside, and fell onto his mattress, pressing his face into his pillow. He welcomed the summer memories, allowing them to fill every crevice of his mind.
He missed the way she looked at him. Missed the way his heart skipped every time she did. He closed his eyes tighter and started to sob into his pillow. I miss her hugs. I miss her warmth. He couldn’t even explain to himself how much he missed just rambling to her about small unimportant things and blushing when she actually paid attention to him. It was hard to experience the fullness of their relationship over letters and two-day visits alone. And even harder now that he couldn’t even keep up with that.
He wiped his face and huffed roughly, turning onto his back. He felt exhausted and depleted and it didn’t take any effort at all to close his eyes. He gave one final sigh and – Fuck. I have essays to grade.
28 September
I’ll see you soon! Same room, order dinner, bring it up, and close your eyes! No peeking and no barging in! I’ve got a little surprise…
Severus smiled and put the letter in his pocket. He picked up the bronze key that she’d slipped into the envelope and ran his finger over the smooth edges. She’d picked the same room he had gotten them. Either she was as broke as he, Or that room actually meant something to her now. He leaned back in his office chair and crossed his arms, holding the key close to his heart.
There was a knock at the door and he quickly slipped the key in his pocket and sat forward. “Enter.”
McGonagall pushed the door open. She stepped in and sighed happily, looking around at his dusted shelves and turned, quickly erasing her look of satisfaction. “Well, Severus. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I must. Your requests to hold the meetings for week days next month have been denied. There are too many teachers and everyone is busy most class days.”
Severus gave her no response and stared at his hands as they began to tremble. He squeezed them into fists and pressed them to his knees.
She looked him over from across the room and frowned. “However, like always, Hogsmeade visits will be kept free… The meetings will be held on the weekends between Hogsmeade visits, and there are only two…” She stood for a few seconds, still looking at him, as if having expected some note of frustration from him, or any sort of disgruntled response. “You’ll only be missing two weekends…”
“I’ll have missed four in total by next month,” he whispered.
McGonagall crossed the room and waved her hand over the empty space in front of his desk, summoning one of her office chairs to sit in. “Might I ask what it is you’re missing out on?”
Severus leaned away and kept his eyes down, his hair falling over his face like protective curtains. McGonagall and him had never talked about anything other than lessons, Hogwarts, or the Ministry. She hardly knew anything about him and he had never asked a thing about her.
“Does it have something to do with whoever you gave those flowers to?” She smiled when he scowled at her. “Poppy might have mentioned…”
Severus looked away again, deciding to fix his energy on glaring at his burnt fire log and the bit of charred entrails he’d accidently dropped last time he prepared a potion in here.
McGonagall stood up and waved her hand over her chair. “I’ll see to it that after October, you get the weekends free, as you requested.” She looked around at his unswept floor and tisked. “Let me know if you need that spell I mentioned.” She fixed her emerald green hat and left his office.
Severus stared at the door and nodded. He had no doubt she’d keep her word. Some bad news… but mainly good? Maybe I won’t entirely ruin tonight with this.
~ * ~ * ~
The Three Broomsticks was just as crowded as before, except the wizards all looked like they’d stopped bothering to take any sort of sobering tonics. Severus ordered their dinner, sparing no expense. Cheesy onion rings, three types of dips, a lettuce salad, fruit salad, battered fish with onion gravy and mash, toad in the hole, two drinks, and garlic chips to share. It was a feast of everything she loved and anything she could be in the mood for tonight and anything they wouldn’t eat he was sure she’d be glad to take back with her.
He waved his wand and followed the trays up the stairs, hissing at rowdy wizards that almost bumped into the food as he went, and stood outside the door. He closed his eyes and knocked. He heard it open and a surprised gasp.
“Are we dining with the Queen?”
Severus’ lips pulled up into a coy grin. “I’m dining with a queen.”
She giggled and pulled him in by his cloak and shut the door behind him. She slid her arms around him from behind and pressed her chin into his shoulder, holding him close. Her breath fanned over the ridges of his ear as she spoke low and quiet. “Then you are my king.”
Severus bit his lips and opened his eyes. There were a few candles hovering around the room and red sparkling petals on the floor. He could feel himself shaking with anticipation and before he could tempt himself, he moved forward and placed the trays of food on the table by the closed curtains.
“Turn around, Sev.”
He let out a shaky breath. Whatever the surprise. I don’t deserve this. He swallowed and spun on his heel slowly, dragging his sight along the floor and stopped at her silver heels. His eyes trailed up her legs, her curves, her glowing face, and flowing hair. She wore silver lace that sparkled with her eyes and a sheer flowing green night gown with feathers at the cuffs and hem of the wide trail.
A heat started burning at his core, and his face flushed red with color. She was wearing his house colors again and an immediate rush of greed flowed through his veins. Since he was young it had been instilled in him what those colors meant. Silver and green were a Slytherin’s pride, a Slytherin’s territory, it meant it was Slytherin owned.
He trailed his gaze all over her body. “Mine,” he growled.
She bit her lip and slowly let the sheer gown drop and pool at her feet. He crossed to her and let his hands roam over her soft skin and plump curves, squeezing and gripping with need and want. She pressed herself closer, putting pressure on his hardened member and looked up at him. He met her eyes and whimpered; her eyes sparkled with a wildness that sent shivers down his spine.
“I need you,” he huffed, his voice low. He reached down and squeezed her curves, pressing her closer into him, feeling the pressure on him mount and the tense heat between them rise.
“I need you too, my wonderful boyfriend,” she whispered.
His breath caught in his throat. ‘Wonderful boyfriend.’ He looked at the deep red petals on the bed and pulled away. He squeezed his hands together, trying to stop the shaking but all it did was make it spread down his whole body.
She frowned with concern. “Severus?”
His breath came out in huffs and he squeezed his eyes shut, feeling hot stinging tears run down his icy cheeks, cold with dread. I have to tell her now. I can’t wait ‘till after. I can’t… I can’t –
“Severus?” she repeated more urgently and pressed her palms to his jaw. She ran her thumbs over his cheeks and wiped away the river of tears. “Tell me,” she whispered.
He sniffed and sat on the edge of the bed, bending his head low enough for his hair to fall forward, shielding him from the world. “I’m not a good boyfriend,” he sobbed. “I haven’t been responding to your letters… I’ve been canceling our dates… And – I have to cancel two more. I can only see you during Hogsmeade visits next month and – ”
She sat next to him on the bed and pulled him into her, rubbing her hand up and down his back gently. “I know you’re busy, Sev. That doesn’t make you a bad boyfriend. Your job as a professor keeps you in the castle… and that’s ok…”
“It’s not ok…” He wrapped his arm around her waist and pressed his nose into the crook of her neck. “You were crying all summer and I promised you – ”
“I was just scared, Sev. I’m so sorry. I was so upset and I missed you so much already that I made you promise me something you couldn’t keep, just to make myself feel better…”
He nuzzled closer and ran his hand down her arm.
“You’ve done nothing wrong, Sev. I should have asked you to send me notes and messages only when you had time… I shouldn’t have put you in a position to cancel dates we’d planned before the school year even started… You’re everything I want. I promise… Dates on Hogsmeade visits sound wonderful.”
He sobbed once more, taking in her words. He didn’t feel she had any hate or loathing, only understanding and care for him. He wasn’t used to this. I don’t deserve her. And yet here she was, giving herself to him, accepting him, caring for him, even after he’d broken his promise and disappointed her countless times. He let his nose trail up her neck and pressed his lips to her warm skin. She tilted her head in response, exposing more of her neck for him and all he could think to do was kiss her tender skin harder.
She giggled and pushed him away with a wink. She moved herself up the bed and laid back against the pillows, moving her finger to motion him over. He followed her, kicking off his shoes and kissed her lips, exploring her mouth with his tongue. He crouched over her, cornering her, and moaned when her legs wrapped around his waist. Her hands ran up and down his thighs as his own hands tore at the delicate lace she wore, unwrapping her like a gift.
He leaned down and began marking her with needy kisses, leaving red marks all over her chest and replacing the ones that disappeared with newer ones. She held him close, encouraging more as her hands played with his long hair. He let his tongue slide out and licked over sensitive areas with hunger. With every moan she gave he grew harder, finally needing to undo the buttons of his constricting trousers.
Her hands found him, and released him from his pants. He groaned and pressed himself against her while her fingers got to work on the buttons of his jacket, vest, and shirt. He slid himself between her lips only, rocking himself, groaning as their bodies began to grind with eagerness.
He tore his mouth away from hers and shrugged off his clothes quickly, sliding off his trousers and pants and threw everything out of his way, unable to keep from her any longer. He closed his eyes and moaned as he slid in slowly, enjoying himself fully. He looked down and pulled back out just as slow and made sure he was fully slicked and glistening before pushing back in all the way and cuddling into her open arms.
“I love you Sev,” she moaned.
He moved his hips slow as he held her, savoring every sensation. He was warm and secure in her arms, like he often felt when they cuddled in bed after long days. He hugged her close and closed his eyes, moaning into her neck with every push he gave. He felt close to her, confident in their shared affection for each other and he realized there was never anything to fear. He moaned and trembled in her embrace as he built up their pleasure slow and steady, knowing soon the romantic mood would dissolve into pure lust and need. He needed to show her how much he loved her with every pleasurable push he gave.
She’s getting wetter, he couldn’t help but notice. Nor could he help the sudden throb he gave at that thought. I need her. He pushed his hips harder and whimpered at her moan. Her hands tangled in his hair and pulled, sending a jolt of electricity down his spine. The slow give and take of his movements turned into hard pounds sending more vivid waves of pleasure throughout his body and hers.
Severus pressed into her, holding her tighter, pounding faster, making sure every wave was immediately replaced by the next. He groaned and held her locked in place as every ripple of pleasure was followed by his name moaned in his ear. He breathed out shakily as her legs wrapped around his waist squeezed tighter and her back arched. Her nails raked across his back as he pounded harder, faster, until her breath caught and her muscles stiffened.
He throbbed as she tightened around him and pushed harder as she relaxed under his weight, letting him press his body back into her inviting curves that cushioned him so perfectly. His breathing was rugged, gasping, trying hard to hold out longer, feeling the pleasure begin to boil over. He dug his face into her neck as the final tidal wave crashed over him and the perfect rhythm he had going broke with every throb he gave deep inside her.
“You’re made for me,” he gasped, shuddering as the wave washed over every nerve in his body. He relaxed completely and her arms held him tighter as she rubbed slow circles on his back.
She pushed his chin up with her finger and kissed his nose. “We’re made for each other. Soulmates.” She whispered.
The message from fate couldn’t be any clearer as they caught their breathes and breathed each other in. They had thoroughly enjoyed not only each other’s bodies, but their hearts and souls as well in this blissful evening.
~~~~~
September 2nd, 1981
Thank Merlin that divination was just an elective. If it was a required course, you wouldn’t have enjoyed your job at all. The last class of the day was as short as the others for the first day of school. After the mass exodus of your class, you stayed behind a few minutes answering several questions from stray students that were wondering if taking your class was the right fit for them. No one was truly interested in divination, but a lot of them knew you had never failed a student and wanted easy marks. But every now and then there would be a fresh face, curious about things that cannot be rationalized by any kind of subtle science.
Your day went off without a hitch. For the new professor; however, the same could not be said. You left the classroom after the last stragglers disappeared and then walked down to the dungeons with a tin box tucked away under your arm, hiding beneath your heavy shawl. Arriving just as a crowd of first-years were leaving the potions classroom, you quickly moved to the wall in an attempt not to get swept away in the waves of people. After the door stopped regurgitating students, you tentatively walked into the open doorway. Rapping the wooden support arch with your knuckles, you peered into the classroom. You hoped his day wasn’t as excruciating as his classroom currently looked right now.
Shards of glass and broken jars littered the floor. Animal eyes and tongues were stuck in the grout, surrounded in the emerald liquid they were once preserved in. They were being eaten by the long pink tongue of a chunky stray toad, while several other toads hopped and flopped about.  It seems none of the students wanted to stay to ask him any questions, as the class was nearly completely deserted. Severus was sat face down at his desk. You trod carefully over the ingredients and glass parts. A toad jumped onto your skirts and you flicked it off, not wanting to bring home a friend today.
You reached his desk and stood to his side, holding your hands as well as the box behind your back. “So, uh…” You bounced on your heels, looking around the room. “What a first day, huh?”
He turned his head slowly and glared at your poor attempt of conversation.
You sighed, dropping your shoulders. “It doesn’t look like you want to talk about it…” You perked up, remembering something that might make his day less miserable. You summoned the box and held it appeasingly in front of him. You grinned at him, “I got you something for surviving your first day!”
He humphed, the breath from his nose flicking a stray hair out of his face. His features softened when he looked at your smile. He sat up slowly and held out his open hand, silently asking for the box. Complying, you gave it to him and stepped closer. Your grin grew as he pried open the tin with his long, dexterous fingers. It popped open. A satisfying clang resonated as it rattled onto the wood. Severus leaned forward to see what was in the box. He reached in and held up the new glassware to his face, peering inside the clear surface.
“Call it my sight or my intuition, but I had a feeling that you would need those today.” You chuckled.
“New jars.” He hummed thoughtfully. The corners of his lips quirked at seeing all of the new jars displayed in the box. Some of them were your standard mason jar, but there were a few with interesting and ornamental shapes.
“Not only that.” You pointed out.
He raised a brow at you.
“Look underneath.” You held an index finger to the cloth safeguarding the jars and hiding another goodie.
He removed the rest of the jars from the tin and unveiled the navy blue cloth.
“Biscuits?” He quirked an eyebrow.
Underneath the dark cloth were snickerdoodles with almonds baked in the soft centers.
“For you!” You grinned, trying to hide your anxiety. You hoped he’d like them.
He stared down at your craftsmanship and then glanced back up at you. His eyes were soft and he gave you a toothy grin, before standing up and pulling you into a hug. “Thank you,” He murmured into your hair before pressing a kiss into it. You nearly purred and held him closer, rubbing circles into his back before he broke away. He pulled away from you, holding your arms and giving you a soft smile. He leaned in and kissed your forehead, squeezing your arms gently for a moment and then retreating. You giggled, adoring how sweet he could be. His smile grew wider when he heard your laugh.
For a few moments, you stood staring and just taking each other in until a frog hopped onto the table. Severus quickly covered the biscuits before the amphibian could land on them. His face hardened, having been broken out of his stupor and faced with the current state of his classroom. He groaned, leaning against the desk, facing you. He pulled you into his arms once again. “You would not believe the day I have had.” He growled.
“I think I can take a guess.” You teased. He rolled his eyes in faux annoyance but a quirk of his lips gave him away. “Tell me all about it, lovely.” You told him, patting his chest softly and leaning up to kiss his jaw. He grinned a moment, a flicker of light flashing in his eyes as he looked at you. He pulled you closer and rested his chin on top of your head.
He ranted, “It all started with a dunderhead in the first year who somehow messed up the cure for boils-”

______________________________
Two minutes after the elaborate goodnight wishes, the five girls were finally on their way down to the dungeons. Cas was babbling away as always, entertaining both Melissa and Lisa to the fullest, while Jorien and Robin merely listened and observed as they followed behind. The three girls up front barely made it down the spiral staircase, giggling as they were, but not even the gloomy darkness of the dungeon hallways could bring the calm and quiet of the night into their conversation as they happily chatted on and on about the many highlights of the dance. Thus it wasn't surprising when a minute later nobody took notice of Robin's quiet yelp as she was whisked away from the group in a crossing of one gloomy hallway with an even darker one.
The adrenaline in Robin's blood skyrocketed immediately, the yelp dying on her lips in a broken moment of initial surprise. Then the familiar arm around her waist and the comforting scent of home quenched every spark of fear or panic in her mind.
She found herself pressed against the cold stone wall a second later, kept in place by the weight of his body while his soft lips on her own demanded a fire she gladly returned, and every last cell in her body lit up in roaring flames as an immediate response. Her heart was bursting, drumming furiously against her ribcage while its echoes pulsed through her entire body in sheer blissful heat. Oh bloody fucking hell, this was magnificent… breathtaking, in every sense of the word. And it still was terribly dangerous, even here now in the dark. That, perhaps, was the only flaw of the moment, their one and only honest mistake.
"Are you aware that you are way too good at this?" Snape finally asked, ragged breaths brushing against Robin's skin as he leaned his forehead against hers. Upon this she smiled, but her eyes stayed closed as she found herself too overwhelmed to open them. She didn't need to; she could feel him, his presence, his warmth, his entire being…
"Really?" She finally let out a humoured and incredulous huff in reply. How could she be any good at this if she had never kissed anyone before? Was her lack of experience really not all that noticeable?
"Without a doubt. I would never allow myself to get this carried away in a school hallway of all places if you didn't enchant me beyond any measure. Beyond any reason."
"Sev-..." She was cut off by his lips, both in word and thought and she lost every string of reason that had just started to gather back together. Oh screw experience, they were way too good at this to even think of that. She must be doing something very right if he couldn't stop this madness either, couldn't resist the growing addiction.
It once again was the noise of people crossing by in a hallway close by that broke them apart, and only then Robin noticed for the first time how much it hurt to stand on one's tiptoes for an extended amount of time. For a kiss like that, she still would do it again and again any time.
"I should apologise for seizing you like that without your permission." He finally said when the retiring students' laughter and chattering had faded in the distance, then he took a step backwards to give Robin her space as well. "Who knew I could act like a dunderhead myself, given the chance."
"Oh, I knew." Robin couldn't help grinning as she stepped away from the wall, which earned her a small glare and a not-smirk. "And as much as I understand and appreciate your point, you do have my permission. Besides, where would be the point in suddenly pressing me against a wall and kissing me senseless if it came with a warning?"
Snape didn't look at her, but the corners of his lips were twitching and she could tell with utmost certainty that he was amused even though being rather flustered at the same time. It was surprisingly adorable, really, and made her wonder if he had never been in such a situation before. Well, not exactly the same situation, obviously, but still…
"I have wanted to do that for a long time now." He replied to her surprise, and his eyes were back on hers, dark and intense and every last idea of adorable was gone. Instead, his gaze made Robin shiver in delighted excitement. "But never would I have thought that it would be better than anything I was even vaguely able to imagine."
"You imagined kissing me?"
"More often than I should admit to, if I want to keep some last scraps of dignity at least."
"I've seen you lying in a muddy river before, as well as being stuck in a giant cobweb. And if that's not enough, we were just snogging in the hallways like the hormonal teenagers we scold for doing the very same. I think it's a bit too late to worry about your dignity with me." Robin chuckled, louder even when Snape rolled his eyes exaggeratedly, but her heart soared when he smiled again after all. "We really should get out of the hallways though, I'm tired of fearing people might run into us. I really don't see how the danger of getting caught can be appealing to someone, for me it's just nerve-wracking."
"I could not agree more."
After taking two seconds to straighten out their appearances just in case, they made their way through the gloomy darkness side by side like they had done so often by now, with the small but significant change that the accidental touches, the brushing of hands and bumping of arms were more intentional than not this time, and both knew it to be their fullest intention as well. Robin couldn't keep the grin off her face, but she bit her bottom lip to tone it down as much as possible. She hadn't felt so much giddy excitement in one night since… well, ever really. And when they walked right past the office, then past the lab as well, a liquid lightning ran from the top of her head down her spine to her very core and every cell beyond. These new rushes were only an additional layer to the bottomless adoration and affection that had been there for years now, to the deeply rooted love she held for him, but it was a heavenly addition nonetheless. It certainly gave the term 'allconsuming' an entirely new meaning, an inevitably deeper one.
It was only when Snape stopped in the crossing of hallways that on one end led to the common room and to his rooms on the other that Robin's smile faltered. With a confused frown she didn't bother to hide she came to a halt as well, looking up at him with the question clear as night in her eyes so she wouldn't have to say the words. It was safer than admitting to being as boldly assuming as she had been… somehow she hadn't doubted that they would at least have a coffee. Like always. Or… did he need space now, with everything that had happened? After all the days and nights they had spent together, he didn't really strike Robin as the kind of person who would need space, not from her. From others, yes, always if possible, but he hadn't sent her away in years, rather on the contrary really. So-...
"I don't know if this could be considered a good idea by any means." He said in a calm tone, reluctant almost while yet he reached out for Robin's hand and pulled her closer to himself. Always the contradiction, that man…
"And why wouldn't it be a good idea?" She asked in return, calm encouragement colouring her voice now that she knew the reason for his hesitation wasn't a sudden wish for distance. Indeed, as if to prove that point, he interlaced their fingers and drew her closer the last bit in a single move of gentle elegance.
"Because if you come with me right now, I won't let you leave again until we are late for breakfast." He replied quietly and yet in that intense sincerity that had Robin's heart skipping beats while her eyes were glued to his. Gods, he really did mean it… excitement struck her like lightning, her heartbeat posed the thunder.
"I can live with that." She managed to say in a breath, her lips curving up into a smile upon the repetition of his earlier words. Then they formed a smirk as she went on. "Bold of you to assume that I'll want to leave for breakfast though."
"Oh, I've never been partial to having three meals per day anyway."
His reply made Robin laugh, then smile up at him brightly and with just a hint of tease. "It's not such a bad idea after all, huh?"
"That would depend entirely on who you ask." He quirked an eyebrow at her with a not-smirk, then walked on down the hallway with a start while keeping hold of Robin's hand. She didn't need to be not-told twice to follow, and was again walking by his side when he spoke on. "I for my part cannot complain, and I honestly don't care about any other opinion but yours beyond that."
"Complaining wouldn't help you at this point anyway, because I have recently discovered the perfect way to bribe you."
"Is that so?"
"Open the door and I'll show you." Robin replied easily but with a teasing smirk no less once they reached his rooms in the bow of the hallway.
"Don't tempt me."
"Isn't that what a temptation is supposed to do?" She quipped while her smirk broadened. "Tempt?"
"You are insufferable."
"Or perhaps tease? Allure? Seduce? Ens-..." She didn't get further when she was pulled through the now open door and into the darkness behind it, barely catching how it was thrown shut again before she found herself tightly trapped against it from the inside. The grin that wanted to form on her lips died a broken second later when she got exactly what she wanted, and yet, as always, so much more.
His lips moved against hers in hunger, returning every bit of passion she gave, and yet there wasn't a hint of roughness in the kiss, no blunt strength which would taint the blissful sensuality. In a spark of boldness or bravery, Robin traced the tip of her tongue over his bottom lip, only for him to gasp against her lips in return. When she wrapped her arms around his neck and did the same thing again, the gasp turned into a silent moan and he pulled her with him away from the door, staggering through the darkness with a baffling certainty until one unfortunate movement of his hand over the hurting spot on Robin's back made her first hiss in pain, then flinch at the intensity of it. He let go of her immediately in return, and Robin's first fathomable thought was a silent curse directed at Morgan for being the cause of what had broken apart this moment. The stupid pain in her back.
"What did I do this time?" Snape asked in honest concern as well as subtle remorse, and a second later the fireplace lit up from a wordless spell, illuminating the remainder of the room in a gentle orange golden glow. They had almost reached the sofa by now, obviously having made their way there before the pain had put a stop to their plans.
"You did absolutely nothing wrong, I promise." Robin immediately gave him a small but reassuring smile, and held onto him so he wouldn't even think about moving away. "It's just that spot on my back that's still hurting ever since Morgan touched it, it really doesn't matter. Don't worry."
"Your back simply started hurting out of nowhere upon his touch during the dance? And he didn't speak a word?" Snape still inquired further, in lingering concern but quite obviously more at ease now that he knew it wasn't his doing that had hurt her at least. Robin had to smile at his sheer inability not to worry about her; it made her heart soar in warmth and adoration all the more. And seeing as he wouldn't stop asking, now that she had brought the mysterious pain to his attention, they might just have to deal with it right now.
"Not a word that was a spell, at least… and yes, he just traced his fingers over my back and that caused a strong stinging and burning that faded a moment later though. Now it hurts whenever someone even comes close to touching it. That's why I flinched so stupidly." She shrugged with a half smile. "Sorry for that."
"Don't apologise for what clearly isn't your fault. I should curse Morgan into oblivion for hurting you right in this instant… but I would rather take your pain away if I can." Snape sighed, then paused for a moment, lost in thought, before he finally spoke up again. "Did it hurt when your back hit the wall? Or the door? Or is it just a hand's touch that hurts?"
The question made Robin frown to herself; she hadn't considered that. The answer she came up with for herself then rendered her frown even deeper. "I believe it's just an actual human touch that causes me pain. It didn't hurt at all when I leaned against whatever surface, and neither does the dress make it sore or anything like that… But you and the girls could hurt me quite a bit by just touching any spot on my back. What does that mean?"
"I have a vague idea." He grumbled to himself at the thought of it, and Robin understood the sentiment only too well in this regard. "Can you touch it without pain?"
"I can try…" She mused and did just that, but even though she only barely could reach the spot with the back of her fingers when she twisted her arm enough, there should have been at least a little sting. But no, nothing, no pain at all. She frowned to herself again. "That's weird. I can't even precisely tell you where it is when it doesn't hurt… and I can touch it without pain. Perhaps it's nothing."
"Magical wounds should not be taken lightly, especially if inflicted by someone as irresponsible as Morgan. We should take you to the hospital wing."
"Or you could look at it here." Robin suggested easily, shrugging with one shoulder as she observed his reluctant but not averse expression. "You know more about the situation with Morgan, about what happened tonight and about me than anyone in the infirmary. I really don't mean to doubt their abilities at all, but I think if it's a magical thing of more or less unknown origin, it falls more into the dark arts anyway, which precisely is the point where I would prefer you to look at it. Who knows, maybe it really is nothing and we're through with it in two minutes… we could save ourselves the time of way. I have other plans for tonight than sitting around the infirmary with a bunch of punch-drunk students."
"Do you?" He couldn't help the smirk on his lips upon that, even though it was clear that he was trying to fight the short lived amusement due to the otherwise serious situation. At least it wasn't serious enough to warrant the complete absence of humour on his end, so that was a relief at least.
"Yeah, actually. I was hoping for a drink and the continuation of where we were interrupted, but I'm still open for further suggestions." She smiled up at him and he rolled his eyes, but the amusement stayed nonetheless, which sufficed to give Robin some more courage. They'd be through with this in no time, they always had been when she'd been injured. "Do you happen to know a spell to undo a million tiny buttons? I haven't found one yet, but if anyone knows such a thing, it would have to be you."
He let out an amused huff, then quirked an eyebrow at Robin. "I believe if there was such a spell, I would have discovered it by now. Every time I tried to invent one myself however, it led to the destruction of the garment rather than the desired result. Therefore I unfortunately have to disappoint you. Why do you ask?"
"Because it would have spared you work." She chuckled, somewhere between humour and embarrassment, the latter of which however she strongly tried to reason against. He'd seen her in various stages of undress over time, and it had never been a big deal. Or had it? Would he think differently of it now than he had over summer? Gods, why was she nervous now?! It wasn't even the kind of situation where she should be nervous, they were just trying to make sure that her back was alright, for heaven's sake! And she still stood with her point that she would rather have Snape looking at her injuries than anyone else, even in complete disregard to the most recent developments between them. This had nothing to do with that, it was just a coincidence. An oddly fitting one, going by the line of events.
Robin resisted the temptation to roll her eyes at herself and her antics and merely turned around so that her back was right in front of him, making an obvious point of what she wanted him to do. This wasn't a movie; plots didn't just fall into place like that. Two things could happen without any obvious correlation between them. She sighed, then focused on the task at hand. "Perhaps I should've worn a dress with a zipper like everyone else, huh? Then again, I wasn't really expecting anyone having to undress me tonight."
She didn't need to look at him to know that he was hesitating, and if she was honest, she couldn't really blame him. Truth was that things were different now, or could be different now, and it was uncharted territory for both of them. Either of them was uncertain what to make of it, afraid to make a wrong move. At least it brought some peace and relief to her mind that he obviously was just as insecure as she was in this new and yet so very familiar moment of innocent intimacy. Even though things like this had happened in the plenty over summer already.
"We're just looking at my back for the damage Morgan did yet again… Just like the times he dislocated my shoulder, or cut open my hand, or-... well, you know what I mean. You've seen me torn up and bloody before, and we've always taken care of it. And I know for a fact that your hands aren't cold, so there really is nothing to worry about, right?" She said in a calm, almost soothing voice, both to him and herself, and contrary to what she had thought, it actually caused an overwhelming wave of ease and comfort to wash over her when he finally started with the first button in the back of her neck. When his fingers brushed against her skin however, her breathing hitched nonetheless while goosebumps covered her skin within a broken second. Perhaps this wasn't entirely like it had been over summer… But comfort and excitement were what it caused yet again, and that really seemed to be a reoccurring theme with them. Their own perfect ambivalence. Home and adventure at once.
It didn't take long at all until the buttons were open down to her waist, just far enough so she could slip the spiky and stiff shoulder parts off her arms, which left her to clutch the front of her dress to her chest quite a bit more tightly than necessary. Robin blamed the neckline of her dress for making her forsake any kind of bralette… It left her upper body entirely bare now, and that in return was the reason why she was clutching the front of the dress to her chest. But then again, she didn't really mind it too much if she was being honest with herself. Having an excuse to show some skin… forcing her to be bolder than she was… it really was terribly exciting for some stupid reason. A lucky coincidence, even if a bit poorly timed. Most of all however, Robin liked the reaction she was getting from the man behind her, judged by the fact that his heartbeat had doubled in speed by the time her back was exposed to him almost entirely. There it was again, that overwhelming excitement that came with the power she seemed to have over him… the knowledge that her mere being did such things to him. But they were just looking at her back for the spellwork done on her, and she gave herself a mental slap to stop pondering how they could go on from there. Unrelated situations, and all that…
"So… how does it look?" She finally asked in a surprising calmness, considering that her every sense was heightened to the extreme. Gods, she wanted him to touch her skin again, even if it would hurt… No, bad thought, bad Robin! There was work to do, and she was getting distracted!
"Like three hand-length cuts that seem to have scarred. Did you ever notice those before? They look far older than just a few hours." He mused in return, then carefully pulled Robin closer to the fireplace by her elbow. She didn't resist and merely walked backwards blindly until she was in the direct light of the fire, and thereby also in the reach of its warmth. He stopped her there, and for a moment she wondered if he needed the light or if he had just noticed the goosebumps on her skin. Duh, obviously he had… they were hard to miss, even if they weren't at all caused by the cold. Either way, his hand lingered on her arm, and that was even more welcome than the fire's warmth.
"Actual scars? I don't think I've had them before, no. And truth be told, you probably would've seen them before if they had been there for longer." She finally remembered to reply, then frowned to herself. "And in addition to that, I can't remember ever getting severely injured on the back. Other than the thing with the bludger in fifth year, that is… I never really knew exactly how badly I hurt myself there, and I never dared to ask."
"Badly enough to have me terrified of your impending death."
"Oops…" She breathed rather lamely, then chuckled to herself almost apologetically. "I guess passing out in the infirmary right in front of your eyes didn't help much with that."
"No. Neither did it prepare me for the instance last summer where you actually came close to death when you passed out on my doorstep." He said in a sigh, then the hand on Robin's arm vanished as he spoke on. "Let us ensure that it won't happen again and find out what that pest of a man did to you this time. Tell me when the pain becomes noticeable, yes?"
Robin only hummed in agreement, and jumped a second later when he placed a hand on her shoulder this time, in a gentle touch that had her melting right on the spot. Slowly and with just enough pressure to be noticeable at all, his fingers danced across her skin, down to her shoulder blade and over her spine, tracing three lines at last with a bit more pressure. Robin had to bite her lip to keep in both a sigh of bliss and a whimper of pain. For some odd reason these two were currently very hard to tell apart in that they both caused an echo of his touch, a heat pulsing through her in the rhythm of her heartbeat.
"Didn't that hurt at all?" He asked with a frown practically ingrained in his tone, as well as confusion in the plenty, and Robin had to call defeat to circumstance.
"Oh. Yes, it did. Sorry, I really should have said something." She admitted in a quiet voice, then got a grasp of herself and continued on a little louder. "But I didn't want you to stop, so I kind of… forgot speech over the overwhelming feeling of having your touch on my back at all."
"You do make it very difficult for me to focus on the problem at hand when you say things like that."
His words brought a smile to Robin's face as it suddenly eradicated the nervousness, and she was only glad that he couldn't see it. "I'm sorry."
"You're not."
"True, I'm not." She couldn't help chuckling at her own half-hearted attempt to fool him, and even more at his trenchant ability to see right through her. "But I'll try to focus on the problem now instead of how amazing your hands feel on my skin."
"Robin…" He warned her quietly, but she could still hear the smirk in his voice, and that's when she couldn't help laughing.
"It's really not my fault!" She protested, and almost would've dropped her arms in a grand gesture if she hadn't remembered just why she was holding her dress in place in the very last second. This entire situation was as ridiculous as it was dangerous as it was wonderful. "You try focusing on anything beyond the tingles when your entire body is a goddamn wildfire!"
"I am trying right now, and you're not making it any easier. The sight of you alone is distracting enough."
"Just that little bit of skin is supposedly doing to you what your touch does to me? Sorry, but I sincerely doubt it."
"You shouldn't." He replied entirely seriously now, and the mere tone of his voice was enough to make Robin shiver again. "It does not take naked skin or fancy gowns for me to think of you as far more than simply ‘delectable’. You are nothing short of the most breathtaking creature I have ever been blessed to see, to stay with the trivial matter of physical appearance for once. But indeed, while I could not care less for others' looks and garments, you never fail to enchant me entirely with any of yours, and seeing as I have previously not had the opportunity to see quite so much of your skin, it does affect me quite strongly now at long last."
Robin's heart skipped a beat, then set into a steady gallop that made it delightfully hard to breathe. But for some reason, the words on her lips did not care for that at all. "You make it very difficult for me to focus on the problem at hand when you say things like that." She mirrored his statement, smiling to herself at the thought. "But do you actually mean it or are you just trying to get revenge on me by equal terms?"
"Both, obviously, but the latter is rather a lucky side effect of the former. And since we are discussing it already, you can call me blind if you will, but I do actually find your hair very attractive on any day, especially because it is a perfect mess." He answered easily, while his fingers continued to trace irregular patterns over the injured part of her back that seemed to hurt more and more by the minute. "Even though I very much appreciate the recent absence of the pineapple scent."
Robin found that she didn't mind the pain, especially not when his reference to her words from earlier this evening as well as the dreaded pineapple made her laugh, and the knowledge that he did, in fact, mean all of those things he'd said made her skin tingle pleasantly. He never made shallow compliments; when he deliberately said something nice for once, one could be sure that he meant it to the fullest.
"I think that might be among the loveliest things you have ever said to me." She smiled after a moment, when her soaring heart would let her speak up through the haze of emotions. "Directly said to me, that is. You say a lot of nice things when you don't mean to."
"Don't get used to it. What a crazy world would we be living in if I started saying nice things regularly now… It would entirely destroy the efficiency and purpose of my compliments." He scoffed in obvious sarcasm and tease, while placing his second hand on her shoulder to keep her in place for whatever he was doing.
"You're an idiot, Sev-..." Robin's words and laughter were cut off with a start when Snape placed his other hand directly on the hurting spot on her back, with quite a bit more pressure than before. It caused a pain far too strong for any measure to ripple through her every sense, and a well of tears to spring to her eyes in return. "Ouch! God damn and bloody hell…"
"I might be an idiot, but an idiot who can focus far better when we banter as usual. That seems to have become somewhat of a precondition for me to be able to work efficiently." He returned, then removed his hands from her entirely before he spoke on in a much more tainted tone. "I apologise for having to hurt you, but in order to undo the spell before it became even more dangerous, that unfortunately was inevitable. Now however, the pain should be gone once and for all in just a moment."
"Wait, you… you know what Morgan did to me and just… undid it like that?" Robin turned around to face him with a deep frown creasing her brows in an instant. "Is that what you were doing while we talked?"
"Yes."
"And you didn't bother telling me?! At least a little warning, perhaps?"
"I had the choice between distracting you by making you laugh and thereby forget about the pain I was unfortunately causing in the process, or to further said pain even more by talking about Morgan and his vile doings." He replied so easily that it made perfect sense now, that it appeared to be the most obvious solution ever. "As you see, it wasn't even a choice to be made."
"Thank you. That… was a really clever thing to do, actually." Robin sighed and gave him a soft smile, then took a moment to appreciate how the shadows of the flames danced across his skin before she spoke on. "So… no more pain for now?"
"Not as far as I can tell, at least."
"Let's find out for sure then, shall we?"

Masterlist
Word count: 1,069
A/N: This is part of a one-shot series in an AU where Severus has an eleven-year old daughter named Hazel. More details on the first part if you are interested in knowing more about this AU!
Severus was having a rough day, everything that could go wrong had indeed. First, he woke up late and had to rush to get ready, bolting down to the Slytherin dormitory to wake the remaining stragglers of Slytherin house and shoo them out for breakfast. Then, in every class, some daft dunderhead blew up at least one cauldron, one of which spilled a highly caustic liquid all over his robes resulting in him having to dispel them immediately! Thank goodness he always wears an extra set of muggle clothes under his robes just as a precaution for such an incident.
With all of these events occurring, Severus had given more detentions just today than he had ever done before. It really was no surprise that he was on the end of his rope and about to lose every ounce of patience he had worked so hard to build up over many years. A booming knock at his classroom door snaps him out of his grumpy trance and makes him audibly groan. He’s had it with everything today and the last thing that he wants is someone trying to talk to him.
“Come in,” he drawls, collapsing into the chair behind his desk. “Remus, what brings you here?” he asks at the sight of the tall man with graying hair that stops in front of his desk, his hands shoved deep in his pockets.
“I came to ask permission for your daughter to accompany me to Hogsmeade this afternoon. I may have let slip that I was heading there to do some shopping for some supplies and she may have overheard me. I tried telling her that first-years aren’t allowed into Hogsmede but of course, she didn’t listen. Said she’d been many times with you already, Hazel, that clever girl,” he smiles. “So what do you say, Severus? Can she come shopping with me? You can come along if you want as well. I don’t have the heart in me to tell her no, so you will have to if you say she can’t.”
Severus sighs. The last thing he wants to do right now is go out, in fact, he had plans to collapse in his chambers as soon as he retired there for the night. But something about Remus’s plea has him captivated, reminding him of the times he used to venture out with his wife and baby Hazel. He knows he can probably trust Remus with his daughter alone, but then again he still has his doubts, even more so he’s worried about what students will think if they see the three of them together.
“Hazel has us both wrapped around her finger,” Severus chuckles. “I can’t tell her no either, it’s been so long since we’ve done anything together. I guess she can go, but I will be accompanying her.”
“As you wish, I’ll meet you both at The Three Broomsticks at six o’clock. We can grab dinner if you’d like.”
“I’m sure Hazel will enjoy that. We will see you there,” Snape concludes.
~~~
As soon as Severus told his daughter about their evening plans she squealed in excitement, tackling her dad in a huge bear hug right in the middle of the Slytherin common room. She had been worried that her father would say no but had plans to plead and beg until she broke him down anyway. She knew how to get under his skin.
“Hay! Can you release your grip on me? I can barely breathe!” Severus gasps, trying to fill his lungs with enough air to get a good breath.
“Sorry, dad!” she exclaims, letting go of her father who pulls on the neck of his robes to readjust them. “I’m just looking forward to spending time with you and professor Lupin! He’s my favorite professor and I think he’s so cool! Wait! Let me show you the book he gave me to read!” Hazel rummages around in her bag before pulling out a green leather-bound book and handing it to her father.
“ ‘Defense Against The Dark Arts: A Complete History,’ ” he mumbles, turning the book over in his hands before returning it to Hazel. “That’s one of my favorites,” he muses.
“Really? I asked him for some extra reading materials and he said this book would surely cure my curiosity being as it contains all known history of the subject,” she laughs, tucking the book back away in her bag.
“He is quite right there,” Severus agrees, surprising himself at his willingness to agree with Remus lately. “Now, go work on your homework or I’ll be going to see Remus alone.” Severus playfully wags a finger at her and Hazel sticks out her tongue at him. Both fall into a short laughing fit before Hazel waves goodbye to head to the library to work on her homework.
~~~
A few hours later Severus and Hazel enter The Three Broomsticks hand-in-hand. Hazel keeps trying to wiggle out of her father’s grasp to run over to Remus, her green eyes crinkling at the edges as a huge smile overtakes her face. Sighing Severus lets go of her hand and she takes off, running to the table in the corner under a staircase where Remus is sitting, his nose buried deep in the Daily Prophet, sipping on a glass of firewhiskey.
When Hazel reaches him, he immediately places the paper down and embraces her, pulling out the chair across from him for her to sit down. Severus greets Remus with a bow of his head, choosing to sit beside Hazel.
“Would you like anything to drink, Severus? Perhaps a butterbeer for you, Hazel?”
Severus nods and says that he would like a firewhiskey and Hazel agrees to a butterbeer as well. Excusing himself Remus returns shortly after, drinks in hand.
“Thanks, Professor!” Hazel begins sipping on her drink happily humming to herself.
“How is it, Hazel?” Remus asks her.
“It’s great! I love butterbeer; it’s my favorite!”
“That’s nice,” Remus hums, directing his attention to Severus. “Anything you need to pick up while we are here? I had planned on swinging by Dervish and Banges.”
Severus shrugs. “I’m here to accompany Hazel.”
“Of course. I’d hate to think you were here to spend time with me,” Remus smirks.
The two men, along with Hazel, find themselves in Dervish and Banges shortly after, but soon Remus and Hazel slip away together giggling while Severus is distracted. The two quickly make their way over to Honeydukes hand-in-hand.
“Okay, Hazel, hurry up before Severus realizes we are gone! You can grab two candies,” he says holding up two fingers.
“Three!” Hazel insists, pushing Remus’s hand down and holding up three of her fingers in his face.
“Fine,” he groans. “But don’t tell your dad I snuck you away to buy you some treats!”
“Don’t tell her dad what now?” a low voice inquires from behind Severus.
Remus’s eyes bulge and he slowly turns around, sweat dripping down his face at the sight of Severus behind him, his eyes narrowed and arms crossed. “Oh, um, Hazel?” Remus whips his head around to get Hazel to explain their actions to her dad but she’s nowhere to be found, already wandering around the store for her three sweet treats. “Fuck,” Remus mutters under his breath, smiling sheepishly. He attempts to back away from Severus but he grips his shirt, holding him in place.
“Language,” Severus tuts. “You thought you could slip away from me, huh?”
“I - I guess,” he stutters.
“Let this be a lesson to you, Remus. Nothing goes unnoticed by me.”
“Duly noted,” Remus responds, shaking slightly.
“Professor Lupin I picked out my sweets! I want a chocolate frog, these exploding bonbons, and a sugar quill.” Handing the treats to Remus she bats he eyes at her dad innocently. “Please, dad! Professor Lupin promised to get me some candies!”
“Fine,” he huffs. “If this idiot wants to buy you some candy that’s on him,” he mumbles, his lips turning up just a bit in the corners into a small smile. It warms his heart to see Remus caring for his daughter and treating her to something special, even if it is just a bit of candy.

Love Is You - chapter 6
a/n: Are you seeing these posts? If not i don’t wanna spend my time editing the fanfiction for nothing…
Tumblr media
    The familiar knock on the door woke Scarlett up in the morning. It was none other than Severus Snape. He was standing there with their breakfast.
"Did i wake you up...?"
"Yeah..." Scarlett murmured sleepily. "Whatever come in."
"Sorry, i thought you'd be awake..." he put the plates on the table.
"The pills make me sleepy all the time... You help yourself, i will be back." She headed to the bathroom.
While he was pouring tea into the cups, she came back and sat down the chair.
"I went to the owlery earlier and there were couple of letters for you so i took them, here."
"Oh thanks."
She looked through them; Leo, Carina, dad... and there was a package. She wondered who sent it so ripped it open since there was no name tag on it. There was a grey cardigan and a note inside of the package, she immediately recognized the cardigan because it was hers. She was very confused, so she picked up the note and read it.
~
I didn't have any thick clothes with me that night and after Sirius and his warmness left me all alone in the cold bed, i had to borrow that from your wardrobe. You lost your husband but you can have your cardigan back.
Love, Arabelle
~
Scarlett took the cardigan and the note and threw them into the fireplace while tears running down on her cheeks.
"How dare she!?" She punched the wall next to the fireplace and fell down the floor crying hysterically. Severus run up to her immediately; he was shocked at her reaction, that was so out of character.
"Scarlett, Scar calm down. What's wrong?"
"I want to kill her!" She was screaming and crying with anger. "I hate her! She ruined everything!" She was digging her long nails into her palms as she clenched her fists.
Severus was so confused and worried at the same time. He hasn’t seen her like this before and he wasn't sure what to do because clearly talking wouldn't work at that moment so he just held her close to calm her down. Scarlett was resistant at first but after a while she leant into him and just cried her eyes out until there was no tear to shed. Sometime have passed like that and finally she was no longer crying and moved away from his embrace slowly.
"I am sorry, that was so pathetic of me..." She whispered while looking away from him.
"There is no need to apologize Scarlett." He stood up and gave her a hand then he led her to the table.
"I feel so ashamed... I can't control myself at all..."
He poured some fresh tea for her and sat back down.
"Why do you feel ashamed? You just express your emotions that way and if it relaxes you, do it."
"I have bad thoughts all over my mind Severus... i don't even know what am i gonna do next. I am scared of myself..."
"Talk through them with me."
She took a sip from her tea and thought for a while. "Did Carina tell you anything? Be honest with me."
"No, not at all. She just said family issues and i didn't question it any further."
"I don't know where to start, so many things happened lately... like i can't perceive them at all." sighed deeply, Scarlett was feeling so distressed she was still shaking from the crying.
"Start with the easiest one for you."
"I am no longer the deputy minister, i quit."
"I read that in newspaper and i was surprised actually."
"It wasn't an easy decision. I love... loved my job and it was a good way to show my abilities but... i had to quit."
"Did you get a better offer from somewhere else?"
"Oh, i wish..." she smiled sadly "I am unemployed right now." She saw the confused look on his face. "And here is the shitty part..." she finished off her tea, hoping it would ease her a bit. But unfortunately, it didn't. She was scratching her hands unwittingly. Severus knew something bad was coming, this was never a good sign.
"He, Sirius, umm... cheated on me..." she bit her lip to stop herself from crying once again but the tears didn't want to stay in their places but run down on her cheeks. "With his co-worker... i caught them in our bed..."
Severus couldn't believe the things he just heard. Sirius literally would kill himself to be with Scarlett when he was young and when he finally had her, he cheated. Severus regretted his decision that he made 30 years ago, he shouldn't have believed Sirius. While he was busy with his thoughts, Scarlett continued.
"We divorced 10 days ago. 26 years of marriage ended in half an hour... and like this wasn't bad enough, after the court i came across with "the girl" and she humiliated me in front of many people. And the package was from her. She has borrowed my cardigan that night because after i interrupted their hot action, she was cold." Her anger was rising, and her face was turning red at the same time. "She wrote me that i lost my husband but i can take my cardigan back." She laughed angrily and then started to cry helplessly once again.
Severus was so angry and just wanted to find Sirius and put him in his place. Seeing Scarlett like this broke his heart into pieces but he didn't know what to do to make her feel any better. He could see her pain through her beautiful eyes. He would give anything to see them shine with happiness again.
"I am standing on a very thin line, if i let myself fall which i am close to... i won't be able to recover from this at all or it will be so hard... I don't want it Severus..." her voice had such a pleading tone and she was literally screaming for help.
"I am here for you Scarlett, whatever you want or need i will always be there to help you."
He was dying to hug her tightly and kiss her pain away. She was the only one he ever loved and his love for her never changed over years.
"Thank you, Severus." She smiled faintly.
He watched her while she was taking her pills with shaky hands.
"Would you like to do something today?" He felt like he needs to take her out of this room, she was stuck between the walls for days and it wasn’t helping her a bit.
"Like what?"
He shrugged. "I don't know, we can go for a walk to Hogsmade?"
She thought about it for couple of minutes.
"We can do that, maybe being outside will be good for me."
"Good then. I will be in my room, when you are ready just knock on my door." He picked up the breakfast dishes and left.
Scarlett sat on the chair for a while before starting to get ready. She thought about Severus, when he was here with her she felt so comfortable even speaking about such hard topics for her. He always made her feel so calm and peaceful. But another side of her was still hurt by him. She decided not to think about that now, there were already man problems in her life.
Some time has passed, and she was knocking on his door. He opened it with a tiny smile on his lips.
"Sorry it took a little longer, apparently i forgot how to dress up since the only thing i wear was sleeping gowns for weeks..."
"It's okay and you look beautiful whatever you wear." The sentence did slip from his mouth before he thought, he blushed a little after he noticed what he just said.
"Thank you, Severus."
She smiled lightly and the two walked out from the castle to Hogsmade. It was a chill November day, just like Scarlett likes it. She was a total winter person and the cold weather always made her feel better and alive. A tiny smile appeared on her lips.
"I was thinking the old days, i have never imagined that we would be on our way to Hogsmade in our 50s."
He chuckled softly. "But here we are. Just like we used to do while we were at Hogwarts."
"I would like to live a day from those good old times."
"We can live like one. First we go to Honeydukes and get your chocolates then we have our hot chocolates at Three Broomsticks and talk."
"Sounds good to me!"
He was happy to see her all excited about such a simple day. They walked the roads they knew so well, got her favourite chocolates and now they were enjoying their drinks.
"You never talked about your life, what's going on with you?"
"Nothing much. Just working and dealing with dunderheads..."
"I hope you are not calling my daughter a dunderhead." She joked.
"I wouldn't hire her as my assistant if I thought so."
"Ah good to hear that because she really likes you, you were always her favourite professor. She would be sad if you called her a dunderhead."
"Carina was my favourite student to be honest. She was such a good student."
"Like mother like daughter." She grinned proudly and flipped her hair.
"I see you very humble."
She chuckled softly while slapping his arm jokingly. Severus grinned at her, that was his Scarlett and he was glad to see her happy. They kept talking about random stuff and spent some more time at Hogsmade. They were back at Hogwarts before it got dark.
"Thank you so much for today Severus, i feel so much better." She smiled at him before she entered her room.
"It's my pleasure, i am here if you need anything."
"Thank you again, see you tomorrow."
"See you."
He walked into his room as well and laid down on his bed thinking about her. His heart was beating like a teenage boy who was back from his first date. She was right here, so close but yet again he couldn't hold her, couldn't inhale her sweet rose scent, couldn't kiss her delicate lips...

A Touch in the Dark - Chapter 5: Jar of Stars
Word count: 1,545
Classes began and the castle was filled with the constant buzz of life. The first few days were very hectic as students got settled but you were able to manage everything on your plate. You found yourself searching for Severus among the crowds often and when you exchanged glances you smiled at him and he would grin softly for a moment then return his face to it’s usual look. One morning you decided to sit next to him at breakfast.
“Good morning, professor.”
“Good morning, Miss Y/L/N.”
You watched as students filled the large dining hall. A frown fell over Severus’ face as he watched the children, he couldn’t help but show his dislike of the dunderheads.
“You don’t like children very much, do you?” You laughed.
“I tolerate them.” He chose his words carefully.
“What are you going to do if you ever have your own?” The question slipped before you could think about what you were asking. He looked at you with a furrowed brow.
“The thought never crossed my mind.” He spoke quietly. Maybe having a family was possible for him but the idea of it seemed very distant.
You looked away feeling embarrassed about asking such a personal question. The two of you remained silent for the remainder of breakfast, you smiled and gave him a friendly nod goodbye when it was time for classes to begin. Your students had already been sitting in your classroom when you arrived. Classes went by quickly but during one of the last classes of the day, a 5th year slytherin student was being difficult.
“Please keep the chatter down.” You raised your voice, targeting the students in the back row. The boy who had been talking during your class looked at you and rolled his eyes, he continued to talk with his friend. You made your way down the middle aisle and placed both hands on the edge of his desk.
“I know you don’t care about listening but others do. So either stop talking or you can leave.”
“Why would I care about what you have to say?” He spoke with a spiteful tone.
“Because I can make things very difficult for you,” you smiled at him, hoping that he’d back down, “so make your choice.”
“I’ll leave,” The boy began gathering his things and mumbled to himself “bloody creature of dirt.”
“Alright, please report to your head of house for detention tomorrow.” You walked back to the front of the class not letting the insults bother you, “Now where were we.”
After finishing the lecture you walked to Severus’ office hoping to find him available to talk to. You knocked lightly on the door and heard him speak to enter.
“Miss Y/L/N,” he looked up from his papers for a moment and then quickly returned to what he was doing, “what can I do for you?”
“I was wondering if I could ask for advice?” You walked hesitantly toward the large desk. Severus didn’t look up.
“Yes?”
“Is it… Petty of me to give a student detention in the first week of school?”
“No, presumably they deserve it?” He looked up with a raised brow.
“Yes, well I believe so. He called me a ‘creature of dirt’ but-”
“He deserves far worse than detention,” he looked furious, “who was the mongrel that called you that?”
“Vincent Blythe.”
“If that dunderhead has any ounce of self preservation he’ll never use such terms again after I’m done with him.” Severus looked back down at his work. He knew that the boy was referring to you as a mudblood. He hated the word and felt that it had caused too much damage to this world because of those who stood by it’s flawed ideology. You were impressed by the amount of rage that emanated from the man that sat in front of you.
“I hope you understand that you are not-” he paused and waved his hand as if bating away his disgust, “-not a ‘creature of dirt’.” He spoke quietly, almost in a whisper.
“I know, it doesn’t bother me.” You paused. “One other thing,” you stepped closer to his desk, “I’ve been practicing some non-verbal spells and I’ve hit a road-block.” Severus looked at you with a curious glint in his eyes. “I spoke with Flitwick but I am more confused now than I was before.”
“Non-verbal magic is an advanced form of magic, it takes years to master. It may be too advanced for you.” He spoke cautiously.
“I can do it,” you stood tall in defense, “I just need a little help, that’s all.”
“Very well,” Severus smirked and stood from his desk, “show me what you can do so far.”
You spent most of the evening with Severus practicing new spells. He admired your eagerness to learn and how much you improved in that short period of time. Watching you warmed his heart and he was eager to have more moments like this. He noticed how you nibbled your bottom lip when you were trying to concentrate and how excited you got when you were successful.  Soon it was time for dinner, you thanked Severus for the small lesson and when you turned to leave he stopped you.
“Come back tomorrow after dinner, I’ll be able to help you more.” He gave you a small smile and you nodded with delight.
Your meetings with Severus in his office became a habit. The two of you usually sat in his office working silently on grading papers and quizzes for about an hour. After that he began his lessons on non-verbal magic. You listened intently to every word hoping to one day be as talented as he was. At times you’d go off on long rants about your students and random ideas. Severus always listened patiently. He didn’t mind that you got distracted easily, he enjoyed hearing your thoughts.
“Focus, you need to clear your mind and visualize the spell.” Severus spoke with a stern tone. You furrowed your brow trying to do as you were told. You struggled with clearing your mind completely but each time you attempted you did better. You visualized the spell and soon you could feel the magic tingling at your fingertips. The feather you had been staring at began to float. Then you tried a different spell and the edges of the feather began to burn and it disappeared in a poof of smoke.
“I think I get it now.” You beamed at the tall man who looked amused. You had spent many evenings practicing and you felt confident in your new abilities.
“Good,” he turned and went to the closet at the back of his room. He searched for a moment and then produced a small jar, “this is for you.” He spoke in a low voice, almost mumbling.
Inside the glass jar was a dark liquid. He handed it to you and when you touched it small particles of light began to shimmer as they floated in a dance-like pattern. It resembled fireflies and stars. You smiled in amazement.
“It’s so beautiful, what is it?” You held the jar close to your face examining its contents.
“It’s a potion that is meant to resemble the night sky, if brewed correctly it will also display the current phase of the moon.” He waved his hand over the glass and you watched as a small moon appeared amidst the dark fluid. One lazy day he had been thinking about the night you stood with him in the tower and how peaceful you looked gazing at the night sky. During one of your side tracked conversations you mentioned how much you loved the stars and moon. You described how as a child you dreamed of becoming an astronaut and you thought Severus wasn’t listening but he was. He paid attention to every detail because he wanted to know you.
“It’s amazing,” you looked at Severus, “thank you. This is the sweetest thing anyone has ever given me.” You wanted to hug the man in front of you but you weren’t sure if he’d appreciate it. So you held the jar against your chest, close to your heart.
Watching you smile and hold his gift close made Severus melt, he felt his heart grow warm and he revealed a small smile.
After realizing you had been standing there staring at each other for what seemed like hours, you awkwardly spoke, “It's getting late, I should go.” Severus watched as you gathered your stuff and fumbled with your books. Suddenly, words blurted from his mouth before he could even realize he was speaking.
“Have dinner with me.” He watched you intently, hoping to glean an idea of what you were thinking.
“Like a date?” You spoke slowly.
“I suppose,” he muttered, “If that’s alright with you?” Severus was genuinely nervous about what you would say.
“Yes, that’s alright with me.”
“Good,” he could see your cheeks brighten from across the room, “have a good night, Miss Y/L/N.”
“Goodnight, Professor.”
When in the hall you brought a hand to your cheek hoping to cool the redness. He made you feel like there was fire under your skin and it fueled your ever growing attraction.

Part 2   Part 3
Tumblr media
Another bad, unproductive day. Nothing seemed to be quite alright for a long time. Nobody noticed your mood lately, but it was nothing new, you were used to it. Your parents were too busy, working for the Ministry of Magic. Your friends had their own problems, and the teachers? Why would they even give a damn..
You laid in bed for about twenty minutes, staring pointlessly at the ceiling. There were no classes to attend, it was Christmas after all. Everyone from your dormitory had left Hogwarts to spend the holidays with their family. Only you stayed behind, your parents wouldn't be home, so there was no point in leaving.
Looking to your left, you saw Jinx, your pet bat hanging upside down, soundlessly asleep. At least she could sleep with no care in the world.
Deciding to roam around, you got up, maybe you'd stop for food in the kitchens. The kitchen elves were particularly fond of you, and always gave you a small snack or some sweets. As long as you were nice to the elves, they were happy to give food out.
With a sigh, you throw off the soft blanket. Your grandma gave it to you before passing away. It was a birthday gift.
Upon the last memory of her, tears welled up in your eyes, which you quickly wiped away. She was your biggest supporter, teacher, and the only close family... until death came for her. And that was the breaking line.. You felt stupid, crying and walking down the hall, where everyone could see. Even though it was nearly nighttime, and half of the students who stayed were probably in their dormitories by now. However, the ghosts were always around, some taunting you, some playing tricks, and some being indifferent.
The closer the kitchen got, the faster you started wiping the tears away. Finally, able to breathe properly, you put on a small smile, and entered the area. Two elves greeted with warm smiles. They never said a word to you, not that it was a problem. Without a word, just a wink one of them gave you a long bar of chocolate, skittles and a bottle of chocolate milk.
"Thank you.." you whispered. You left with a wave, still smiling softly. Now you just had to find a place to sit down.
Two more turns, and you found yourself before the staircase leading to the dungeons. It was one of your favourite places. Whenever you felt sad or just exhausted with life you came there. Sometimes you managed to cross paths with your professor, however you prayed to Dumbledore that he was already down there. It would've been an embarrassment if he'd see you in such state.
Munching on your treats, tears began flowing down again. This year was just so terrible for you. Your grandma passed away, your grades got worse, you parents were always working and your friends just stopped caring.
Loud footsteps echoed in the empty corridor. Before you could wipe your face, Professor Snape came into view, a nasty scowl on his face. Upon seeing you, his expression changed, it softened a little bit.
Since he started teaching you, he saw great potential, not once did you make a mistake in brewing a potion or on a test. You were always the first one to give it back, or answer a tricky question on many lessons. He liked your passion about potions, always approaching it with delicacy and great precision.
And you never spoke any ill words about him, quite on the contrary, you defended him handful of times. And it warmed his cold heart, making him put down the tough layers he built around himself, just for you. On free periods, you came to his classroom, offering your help in arranging the cupboard or preparing for his next lesson, like bringing important jars and such.
Students noticed how you became the only favourite student, always going soft on you, never giving a snarky comment, only small praises, sometimes even a smirk, although barely noticable for others.
"OH.. Professor-" you started, getting up. Your cheeks heat up, embarrassment washing over you.
"Come along, Y/N." he spoke quietly, going down the stairs, towards his office.
Not wasting much time, you walked behind him. Vision still blurred from the tears, you took careful steps, afraid you'd fall and break your bones.
You didn't know if you should curse Dumbledore or actually thank him. Maybe Snape's company would actually cheer you up, or worsen your mood.
"Alohomora..." he muttered, letting you in first with a small nod.
You went further in, sitting down on the couch near the fireplace,and opposite Snape's armchair. It was like a ritual, most of your holidays you spent there. Severus would always make tea for both of you, and sit down by the fireplace. Some days were in comfortable silence, just enjoying each others company, and on some days you'd make small talk, or discuss many topics. But it never felt forced.
"Green tea, as always I presume?" he questioned, raising a brow.
"Yes, that would be lovely, thank you."
He nodded, turning the kettle on. You smiled, it was nice to have someone show a little bit interest in your well-being.
"How are the first years?" you asked, staring into the fire, pushing your hands out trying to warm them.
"Horrid. Not one brat knew what I would get if I added root of Asphodel to an infusion of wormwood.." he exclaimed, rolling his eyes.
"HA! Easy. Draught of Living Death." you shouted triumphantly.
"Precisely. Well done." he praised, smirking. You looked down, blushing madly. He knew it would lighten your mood a little bit.
"It couldn't be that bad though? I heard Jack got better in potions.."
Severus let out an annoyed sigh. "He just made the potion explode. Instead of cutting the Sopophorus bean while making Felix Felicis , he should've smashed it, brings out the juice more. Damn dunderhead .."
"Oof, well, next time I see him, I'll tutor him a little bit."
Severus handed you the tea, sitting on the armchair, taking a sip of his own one. You handed him the other half of the chocolate bar.
"Don't bother... How are your parents?"
You offered a weak smile. "Good, busy as always, but working for the Ministry is like that, so what can I say."
"How have you been lately, professor?" you questioned, looking into his eyes.
"I've told you many times before, call me Severus." he gave a small smile, making your heart melt instantly. "Good, although the holidays aren't my favourite, I prefer that muggle tradition called Halloween."
"Oh Merlin! Me too! Especially when the elves make pumpkin pasties and delicious cranberry punch." your laugh was like a beautiful melody to the dark-haired man.
"Ah, yes. Though the idea of scaring those isolent brats is just too tempting to pass." he smirked.
He frowned quickly. It threw you off a bit.
"I've noticed your grades getting worse. Minerva approached me before the christmas break. She worries about you, as do the other teachers. And I." he said softly. "You were always a top student. What changed?"
Tears welled up in your eyes for the milionth time. The teachers actually care? Professor McGonagall even came to Severus?
So lost in your thoughts you didn't realise Severus sat beside you, his worried gaze on you.
"I'm sorry.." you managed to whisper, before heavy sobs took over your body.
The cold man instantly took you into his warm embrance, caressing your soft hair, rocking you back and forth. Who would've thought that a man like Severus Snape would ever hug someone and try to make their every problem dissapear, because he cares so deeply. You really wreaked your way into his heart, that actually lied existed, but under many layers of thick walls.
"Shhh. It's alright. We're here, I'll help you as much as I can, and so will others. Don't worry." he promised.
You pushed your head into the crook of his neck, hugging him as tightly as he was you.
"Thank you.."
