Here's chapter 1 of my latest fic, The Shadow and the Sunrise. Ranyare, a member of the original eldar who awoke on the shores of Lake Cuiviénen, has survived into the Third Age and has lived hidden away from others in Fangorn Forest. Forced to come out of hiding, she meets the elves of Lothlórien and Greenwood. Much to her surprise, she and Thranduil become friends and together they will work through their pain and traumas to finally find peace and love.
I thought it would be fun to have a character that was one of the first of her kind still alive in the Third Age. Círdan is the oldest known elf in canon in Middle Earth but it seems like he was born to elves at Cuiviénen and was not one of the first generation to awaken fully grown on the shores of the lake. This will only be a few chapters and I hope everyone will enjoy it!

Ngl, obsessed with the idea that the questers know that legolas is, if not thousands of years, then centuries old, but it not regestering until he mentions having met their ancestor or a historical figure to them. It doesn’t help that legolas looks like a teenager.
Just like that scene with eowyn realizing aragorn is a legit grandpa but with legolas and the rest of the walkers instead.
Legolas: i never had the pleasure of having a conversation with the man, but from the brief glimpses of (insert boromir’s ancestor from 1000 years ago here) that i saw, he was an honorable man.
Boromir, bluescreening: yes, he was known as quite the chivalrous man. But for you to have met him you must be at least a thousand years old!
Legolas: *clicks tongue and doesn’t say anything with an amused smile*
Aragorn, who has gone through all these emotions already: older.
Gimli: Older?? Are you telling me that this beardless, pointy elf with a face of a teenager is, what? 2000?
Aragorn: more.
Gimli: MORE???
Merry: if he is close to 3000 years than he was probably born around the last war for the ring!
Legolas, enjoying this all immensely: i was old enough to fight in it actually.
Pippin: alright, so legolas is 3000 and a few centuries. That’s a lot older than i thought to be honest. He looked like the youngest elf in rivendale.
Legolas: i’m 4000, actually.
Gimli: GODDAMN IT! I knew we shouldn’t trust these babyfaced point ears! You can’t even tell their age!
Legolas: if it makes you feel better, other elves also have a hard time discerning the age of silvans. They’ve routinely thought of mine to be millenia younger that we actually are.
Boromir, having an existential crisis: what the fuck

I feel like the third age mirkwood elves deserve some more human inspired looks. I think they deserve to have made good friends with lake town and the dale folk before them.

When Legolas was little, he would be awoken by horrific screams in the middle of the night. It scared him so badly he didn’t dare walk towards his father. So he would scream for Thranduil, who would come immediately. Legolas was then allowed to sleep in bed with his Ada.
It wasn’t until centuries later Legolas found out the screams weren’t any monster. When he saw his fathers scars for the first time. He realized it had been his father screaming in agony from pain, fear and nightmares.
It made him feel pretty special he could take his fathers fear away. Even if it was for a short while.

"Such is the nature of evil. Out there in the vast ignorance of the world it festers and spreads. A shadow that grows in the dark. A sleepless malice as black as the oncoming wall of night. So it ever was. So will it always be. In time all foul things come forth."

Imagine the elves of Mirkwood forming an alliance with the spiders and using them like horses because the thought of domesticated giant spiders makes me giggle.

Today's ever so slightly unhinged headcanon is that the Silvan Elves in Greenwood invented and were the first ones to practice Stand Up Comedy.
They absolutely didn’t do it on purpose, it evolved organically over time among the warriors to help raise their spirits and pass the time. It started with friends telling each other stupid jokes, and then patrols would take turns telling each other funny stories from their lives. Once they started running out of stories, they began to actively think about other ways they could make the others laugh. Practicing and rehearsing idea’s in their heads, trying to get it perfect for whenever it was their turn next.
The longer the war went on, the more the ‘art’ of it evolved and the farther it spread into the rest of Greenwood's population.

Snippet from The Darkening Forest
I haven't had much time to work on the latest chapter of my current Thranduil fic, The Shadow and the Sunrise, (it is coming soon though) so I thought I'd highlight one of my favorite parts of the first Thrandy fic I wrote. It's set around T.A. 1050 and Thranduil (whose wife broke her bond with him and sailed West) and Legolas have befriended a young female elf named Dailwen who came to their realm as a refugee from another part of Greenwood.
The elves of the Woodland Realm had a feast each time the seasons changed but the one in the Spring was especially fun as it was also a chance to celebrate their king’s birthday. The celebration was held each year on his birth date to commemorate both events together. Unlike the Yule festival held under the stars, the Spring feast was celebrated out in the bright sunlight. Legolas and Dailwen didn’t know what to get him for a gift as he didn’t want for or need anything. Eventually they decided their gift would be a chore the king had been putting off for a while. The large wooden bookshelves in his study, which held his personal library, needed to be cleaned and polished once a year and Thranduil typically did the job himself although he did not exactly enjoy it. The shelves were made by his father so he was very particular about them but when Dailwen and Legolas offered to do the job, he gladly accepted their gift. The party itself was a big success, as they typically were, but the king couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy each time Dailwen danced with a different ellon.
--- “What’s happened?” Thranduil asked frantically as he happened to turn down the hall in time to see Legolas carrying Dailwen to her room, her face contorted in obvious pain. “She fell from the ladder and landed hard on her back” he explained as they had been working on the tall bookshelves. He reached her door and Thranduil opened it so they could take her inside. Her breathing was labored and Legolas carefully laid her on the bed. Thranduil sat down beside her and took her hand in his. “Just focus on me and breathe” he said calmly as he used the back of his fingers on his other hand to stroke her cheek. Her breath soon returned and she said, “I’m alright. The fall just knocked the wind out of me.” She tried to sit up but Thranduil wouldn’t let her. “I’m fine” she said in protest. “Lay still until I’ve made sure nothing is broken” he told her in a tender voice. “I’m not made of glass” she said with a laugh but then she winced a bit in pain. Indeed, elves were tough and a fall of just a few feet, even if it was on to a hard stone floor, shouldn’t do much damage. Thranduil was a skilled healer and he was going to make sure she was alright before allowing her to move about. “Stop arguing and be still” he said a bit more firmly now. First, he put his hands on both sides of her head to check her skull, then he moved down to her neck and also ran his hands along her arms. When he put his hands on her ribs, it tickled and she did her best to hold in the laughter. He checked her hips and then lastly her legs and feet. “Nothing broken” he confirmed and then he helped her sit up and Legolas poured her a glass of water from the pitcher in her room.
“Was nearly making my heart stop part of the gift?” he asked teasing her as she finished her drink. “That was a bonus” she said jokingly. “Your back may be sore for a bit but I have some liniment that will help.” He instructed Legolas to bring him the supplies and while he was gone, Thranduil told her to take off her tunic. “I most certainly will not!” she said shocked at the request. “Take it off and lay down on your chest” he said demandingly as he stood up and turned away from her. She gave the back of his head a cross look but then did as she was told. “Okay” she said when she was done and he sat back down beside her. Her back was red from her shoulders to her waist. “Am I going to have to wrap you up in pillows or will be you be more careful in the future?” he quipped. “Don’t make me laugh; it hurts” she said pitifully. Legolas came back in and handed his father a small jar. His cheeks flushed a bit as he saw Dailwen’s present condition and then he stood back by the door. Thranduil opened the jar and used his fingers to dip out the liniment. He rubbed it between his hands and then began to work it into her back. She flinched once and he said tenderly, “I’m sorry but this will make it feel better.” Between the warmth of the ointment and the touch of his gentle hands, Dailwen soon forgot all about the pain. “Now lay still and rest” he said and then he bent over and kissed the back of her head. Dailwen soon drifted off to sleep feeling absolutely wonderful.
She woke up after a bit and checked the clock on her bedside table. It was almost time for supper so she got up and redressed. She walked down the hall and when she passed the king’s study, she found both father and son working on the bookshelves. “This was my plan all along. I fall, get hurt, and then get out of the work” she said leaning against the door frame. “How are you feeling?” Legolas asked. “Much better. That liniment helped a lot. Thank you” she said directing the last part to Thranduil. “You’re welcome. You have no idea how many times he fell out of the trees as a child and had to be coated with it from head to toe” Thranduil said referring to the liniment and his son. They left their work to eat and Ithilfen had made a special desert for Dailwen, a lemon custard pie, after hearing about her accident. She was always happy to make people feel better with their favorite foods.
Dailwen went to her room after supper so she could soak in a warm bath skipping their usual family time. Legolas went back to work on the shelves and although his father offered to help him finish, his son insisted that he would do it alone as completing the chore had been a gift. Thranduil went to his room and sitting at his desk he began to sketch a picture of the forest with its Spring flowers in bloom. However, he continually found himself distracted with the thought of how soft her skin had felt and how her hair smelled like lilacs. He got out a blank piece of paper and began a new sketch. She was lying on his bed with her back exposed and only a silk sheet covering her lower half. Her face was turned so that the seductive smile on her lips could be seen.
If you enjoyed that, you can read the whole story here:

What most elves thinks it’s like talking to the trees:
Silvan: mighty oak tree, is there some trouble of which you would like to warn us?
Tree: no, my kind silvan. There is no darkness of which that can cause you harm.
What a silvan talking to a tree is actually like:
Legolas, cackling, landing on a tree branch: babe, you’ll never believe what happened!
Tree, lighting up and shaking their leaves: Legolas, my good bitch! I got news!

The Regencies of the Princes of the Woodland Realm
Tumblr media
Original Map credit to The Encyclopedia of Arda. Edits by @sotwk.
King Thranduil Establishes the Rule of Princes
Thranduil's ascension faced opposition by a handful of powerful Sinda nobles (Oropher's councilors), who schemed to usurp the throne. They sought to turn the Silvans against Thranduil by disparaging his wife, Maereth, as a daughter of Noldor kinslayers. Fortunately, the people's love for Thranduil prevailed, and they embraced Princess Maereth as their Queen. She was eventually crowned almost a century after her husband took the throne.
Some years after the birth of their fifth and last son Legolas, Thranduil passed a royal decree called the "Thain-na-Conin" or "Rule of Princes", which modified the kingdom's feudal system of governance.
This law bestowed governing power on each one of Thranduil's children, granting them lordship over key provinces in the realm. Upon reaching the age of 250, the princes assumed responsibility for the protection and welfare of the citizens dwelling within their assigned lands or "regencies", while still answering to the sovereign authority of their father and King.
This was done not to increase the royal family's power, but to protect the common folk from negligence or abuses of their ruling lords. As the population grew rapidly and hundreds of new communities sprouted all over the vast Greenwood, Thranduil wanted to ensure that all Silvans received the same amount of care and attention from the Crown, no matter how remote their location.

Political Timeline of the Woodland Realm:
SECOND AGE
SA 2054 - King Oropher moves his household out of Amon Lanc and migrates northward, setting up a new domain and capital in the western glens of Emyn Duir.
SA 2022 - Prince Thranduil commences the construction of a new palace separate from his father's, which he intends to make the home of his family. (Despite Maereth rejecting his marriage proposal.) This causes great strife between him and his father, because Thranduil declares he will not pursue anyone else but Maereth for his wife.
SA 2107 - Thranduil's palace is completed and he begins to assemble his household. The palace is named Bar Lasgalen, and is the grandest structure to ever be raised in Greenwood's history.
SA 2110 - Maereth visits Bar Lasgalen for the first time. Thranduil proposes again, but once more she turns him down.
SA 3142 - Thranduil and Oropher reconcile. Oropher finally grants his blessing for Thranduil to marry Maereth.
SA 3262 - Thranduil and Maereth are betrothed at the celebration of the Mereth Nuin Giliath in Greenwood.
SA 3265 -  Thranduil weds Maereth and she comes to live at Bar Lasgalen.
SA 3430 - Crown Prince Mirion is born. After himself being persuaded by Maereth, Thranduil convinces his father to join The Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
SA 3434 - Oropher is slain at the Siege of Barad-dûr.
SA 3441 - The war ends. Thranduil’s reign as Woodland King begins, and Bar Lasgalen becomes the realm's new capital.

THIRD AGE
TA 37 - Turhir is born.
TA 88 - Maereth is crowned Queen of the Woodland Realm.
TA 89 - Arvellas is born.
TA 221 - Gelir is born.
TA 242 - Legolas is born.
TA 250 - Thranduil passes the "Rule of Princes".
TA 252 - Mirion assumes his regency over Bar Himlaeg (his late grandfather's domicile) and the communities of Emyn Duir.
TA 278 - Mirion marries Itarildë. The Crown Prince's controversial marriage to another "outsider" instead of a Silvan stirs up discontent among Thranduil's political opponents once more.
TA 287 - Turhir assumes his regency over the newly established city of Thangail.
TA 307 - Lord Councilor Silevion is exposed as the leader of a coup attempt against the royal family. He is deposed and stripped of his titles, and exiled from the Woodland Realm.
TA 339 - Arvellas assumes his regency over Cemamath, taking over Silevion's lands.
TA 471 - Gelir assumes his regency over Dant-en-Aras.
TA 492 - Legolas assumes his regency over Galadal.

The Regencies of the Thranduilions
King Oropher's departure from Amon Lanc initiated the gradual migration of the Silvan Elves from the southern parts of Greenwood to the northern half of the great forest. By the start of Thranduil's rule, more than half of the realm's population resided above the Old Forest Road. However, the southern parts of the realm experienced a period of reinvigoration in the early Third Age due to the successful regencies of Prince Gelir and Prince Legolas.
The Woodland Realm enjoyed its most prosperous years between TA 500-1000, with the Thranduilions all working to further their parents' vision for a strong, united kingdom. The five regencies of the princes are:
BAR HIMLAEG, ruled by Crown Prince Mirion. A center for healing (esp. herbal medicine), the best source of Elvish medicine east of the Misty Mountains.
THANGAIL, ruled by Prince Turhir. Main base and training facility of the realm's military forces.
CEMAMATH, ruled by Prince Arvellas. Center of trade and commerce with the Dwarves and Men in the east.
DANT-EN-ARAS, ruled by Prince Gelir. Outpost and headquarters of the realm's best hunters and scouts.
GALADAL, ruled by Prince Legolas. Home of the largest concentration of farmers, who worked the fertile plains and maintained herds in the lands east of the forest borders. (Note: the Bight shown on the map did not exist until TA 1200, after Thranduil's people already left the southern forests.)
Unfortunately, in TA 1050, the Necromancer (Sauron) captured Amon Lanc, and began to poison the southern woods, with toxins and monsters that caused deaths at an alarming rate. Despite Thranduil and his family's valiant efforts to combat the Darkness, it continued to spread northward over the course of several centuries. Finally, the Elvenking made the difficult decision to prioritize the safety of his people and abandon the lands south of the Emyn Duir. He led his people north-east and reestablished their smaller kingdom in the underground halls.
The strength and prosperity of the Woodland Realm was one of the reasons Sauron chose it as a target for his corruptive influence. He both feared and envied the power of Thranduil and his family and wanted to destroy it, if not deceive or force it into his service.
Up until their last breaths (literally, for some of them), the Princes continued to fight for the defense of their beloved homeland until Dol Guldur was finally cast down at the end of the War of the Ring.
