Arwen remained in Rivendell, and when Aragorn was abroad, from afar she watched over him in thought; and in hope she made for him a great and kingly standard, such as only one might display who claimed the lordship of the Númenoreans and the inheritance of Elendil.

paolo uccello -- "saint george and the dragon" (ca. 1470)
"what a delightful thing this perspective is!" ... paolo uccello
"so comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their endings" ... j.r.r. tolkien
"fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. what fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. the baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. what the fairy tale provides for him is a st. george to kill the dragon" ... g.k. chesterton
"it is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view" ... george eliot,
"i have little doubt that when st. george had killed the dragon he was heartily afraid of the princess" ... g.k. chesterton
"i have no doubt that everyone would fear someone holding a dragon on a leash ... it would be a fairy tale with no good end indeed" ... al janik

Tolkien wrote LOTR in the 30s and 40s when women had no rights. He wrote Eowyn as this badass who laughed in the face of death and stood up to the sexism of men.
In the movies that were made in the late 90s and early 2000s, they decided her feminist scenes from the book weren't worth keeping and all we got was "I am no man".
Tolkien knew the importance of women, not just being a part of the narrative, but leading it, and, as much as I love the movies, Peter Jackson didn't. This will always be something that pisses me off. There are SO many men and they cut the scenes of the one woman who stood up to them.
Women in fantasy deserve more. Women in film deserve more. Women deserve more. Period.
To all the little girls watching LOTR: I hope you read the books as soon as you can. There's more for you. You can be the hero just as much as Aragorn, Frodo, Sam, Theoden, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, etc. But don't just stop there. You don't need anyone to tell you what you're able to do, especially a man. Be your own Tolkien. Write your own story. Make your own movie. Do what you want because you can.

The Wisdom of Tolkien… Again…
The Wisdom of Tolkien… Again…
Yes, it’s time for another piece of wisdom from J.R.R. Tolkien the creator of the wonderful world of Middle Earth, or as most identify it as “The Lords of the rings”. Tolkien’s frame of reference for his writings are anchored in perhaps the most horrific time in human history. He fought in WWI, then there was the Spanish flu, then the great depression, then WWII. To have all that calamity and…
