You had finally gotten a free evening to yourself after training for the better part of every evening for the last year with your father, Girdirion. He had been training you relentlessly after Legolas had left of the quest his father, King Thranduil, had sent him off on. That was over a year ago. You hadn’t heard much other than they had made it to Minas Tirith a few months ago.
Your father suddenly saw you as defenseless without your longtime friend at your side. Being the kings most trusted advisor, he had been trained for centuries and was a formidable fighter. It wasn’t until after Legolas had left that you had realized how serious the threat to middle earth was. Your father must had realized it too as he worked you to the bone, training you at every chance he could.
It was only after King Thranduil received word that the ring had been destroyed and his son was heading home did things begin to change. Your father still made you train but it wasn’t at every waking moment any longer. Tonight, was one of those nights that he had given you off as he had meetings to attend to with the king.
Time felt too slow as you waited for Legolas to return. He promised he would. You knew he would. He was all the way across middle earth, but you just couldn’t seem to wait any longer. You longed for you best friend, who meant much more to you than just a best friend, to come home.
As soon as you settled on your bed to begin reading the novel you had been meaning to finish there was a quick knock at your door. Who could that be? You weren’t expecting anybody at this hour after dinner. Begrudgingly, you set the book down just as you had gotten comfortable and made your way over to the door.
When you opened the door you scrunched your face in confusion, “Father? What are you doing here? I thought you were meeting with the king?”
He nodded, “I was. Then we got interrupted. There is somebody here I think you may want to see.” His smile let you know exactly what you were thinking. Legolas was home. He was back in Mirkwood after nearly a year and a half away. Sure, it wasn’t that long of a time for you in the scheme of your lifetime but it did feel like the longest year of your nearly two thousand years in middle earth.
“Legolas?” You tore out of your room not waiting for his response as you made your way to the throne room. You heard your fathers deep laughter behind you before he jogged to catch up with your lighter than air pace.
Once he caught up to you he had that knowing smile on his face. He had watched the two of you dance around the obvious feelings each other had. You never thought you were good enough to be with the kings son. He never thought you were interested in that way. But to everybody on the outside looking in it was rather obvious the two of you were destined to be together. Even if it was taking longer than expected. A thousand years longer than expected. See, King Thranduil and your father had agreed they would bless the union between the two of you should it come naturally. But neither had the heart to force it. He and your father knew as good as anybody these things had to find their way on their own, naturally. Even if it drove the two elder Ellon’s mad.
“Indeed, your elf has made it home.” He spoke as the two of you walked, much faster than normal, towards the kings room.
Before you opened the massive wood doors you turned to him with a sly smile and a hint of a blush dotting the apples of your cheeks, “My elf?”
Your father raised his eyebrows at you, “Go on then.” He pushed you forward ignoring your question.
When you pushed open the doors you couldn’t find the familiar blonde hair of your best friend. Even as you walked closer to the throne you looked all around the hall and only spotted King Thranduil who was giving you the same smirk your father just did. What were they up to? Where was Legolas? And why was the king looking at you like he knows something you didn’t?
“I apologize my king.” You bowed unsure of what else to do. When you turned to see if your father had followed you in you were left biting your lip seeing the door closed without him in the room. What was he up to? “My father said…”
Thranduil put his hand up pausing you right in your tracks, “Legolas is out in the gardens with a dwarf. A dwarf!” He sounded more frustrated than excited to his son after the time away.
But you cracked a smile instead. That was so him. He was anything and everything his father was not. The two of them could not have more different personalities. Your best friend was the one to push boundaries no elves would or could do seeing that his father was the king, “A dwarf you say? That sounds like him.”
Thranduil studied your happier than he’s seen you in an entire year expression full well knowing it was because Legolas was back from his grand quest. Thranduil rose from his throne before walking down to you. Having to look up to him because he was so tall all you could do was wait on his word.
He pointed his hand towards the entrance to the kings private gardens, “Go, you audience is rather impatiently waiting on you.” He gave you a knowing smile before retreating towards the door you had originally come in, likely to go find your father. Not wasting anymore time you made a beeline towards the doors that led to the private gardens you so rarely got to enjoy. He must have deemed it enough of a special occasion to grant access to not only you, but a dwarf as well. You knew Legolas was behind that as well. He was the only one to get the king to agree to something he might not want to do.
For the second time in a few moments, you threw open the heavy wooden doors leading out to the gardens. It did not take you long to hear the pair before you saw them. You paused hoping to catch just a brief moment between the two of them before you made your presence completely known. As you suspected the dwarf had Legolas distracted from hearing you walk out.
“Look at ya lad. Pacin’ like a horse.” The unfamiliar voice chuckled. You had a feeling the dwarf poked fun at the ellon more often than not.
You just knew he was rolling his eyes, the beautiful blonde prince he was, “I am not Gimli.”
But the dwarf just kept laughing, “Ya’ weren’t even this nervous when we rode up to the Black Gate.”
“Would you quiet down dwarf. She will be out momentarily.” That sounded just like the elf that had left a year and a half prior. It was almost too easy to get him worked up and the dwarf called Gimli certainly enjoyed playing into it.
“The little lassie has you this nervous huh?” You? You made him nervous?
Legolas let out a huff, “Gimli!” And you knew that was your queue to help spare the ellon from his friend who seemed relentless. You already liked Gimli from the sounds of it. You shut the door behind you louder than necessary to signal your arrival.
Taking a deep breath, you walked forward suddenly terribly nervous after those comments. What was Gimli playing on? Why would he be nervous to see you? You didn’t want to get your hopes up on feelings as you buried those away centuries ago. Your crush for the ellon grew slowly the first thousand or so years you knew him. Truly organic in the best way possible. Childhood friends to training partners to friends then best friends after it all. Once your training to become a healer had completed you had a sneaking suspicion all his injuries in the field were so he could come see you after some time away. He would only request you. Straight refusing the other healers help when offered. He would wait for you.
But then it just stayed like that. You thought it could grow into something more, but it dawned on you over the next few centuries his father had a say in who he courts and marries. Why would King Thranduil allow his son to court you of all elves? Sure, your father was his most trusted advisor, but you were no political gain in marriage. So you did what you did best, buried the feelings deep and bottled it all up.
The two of them quieted quickly hearing the door close. When you turned the corner you finally spotted your prince after far too long apart paired with an adorably red-headed dwarf who was staring right at you. You however were staring straight at Legolas as your small smile turned into a massive one. There he was, as handsome as ever, standing right there in front of you after too long. The longest either have you had spent apart from each other.
“Legolas.” You grinned before pulling him into a tight hug. It was when he gave you a big squeeze back that you simply just melted into the ellon completely forgetting you had an audience yourselves.
“Aye lad! You left out the detail of your Y/N being quite the beauty.” Gimli spoke up from beside you breaking the trance the two of you seemed to be under. You giggled once you pulled away from him seeing the look of horror cross his face at his friends comments.
You turned to the dwarf feeling the nerves wash away. You had the advantage here as Gimli seemed to want to torture your friend, “Hello. It is lovely to meet you. I am Y/N. Daughter of Girdirion, King Thranduil’s advisor.”
He pointed at you before narrowing his eyes at you, “Do you hate dwarves as much as his father does?”
You shook your head, “Hardly. You are actually the first dwarf I am meeting. I do not get away often.” You knelt down making yourself level with him, “You are much cuter than made out to be.” That earned a few stumbling words and a rather mighty blush to the warrior who seemed to have nothing but words. You managed to render him speechless.
This earned a snicker from your favorite ellon, “Elf got your tongue there Gimli?”
That comment must have meant war between the two of them. The dwarf cocked his eyes up to his friend, shook his head then turned back to you who was now back to standing instead of crouching, “Lady Y/N. It is lovely to finally meet you too. I feel as though I already know ya lassie.” He grinned knowing exactly what he was about to do.
You looked at Legolas with curiosity framing your face before returning your attention back to Gimli, “Do you?”
“Aye.” He nodded, “Legolas here would never shut up about ye. Y/N this. Y/N that. Y/N would love this. Y/N would hate that.”
You knew your cheeks were surely aflame with embarrassment just as Legolas’ were, “We have spent quite some time together over the years.”
But Gimli wouldn’t have that, “I think it has something to do with you lassie. The way you look. The way you dress. The way you seem to occupy his every thought.”
“That is enough.” Legolas finally chimed in giving his friend a hard stare telling him to get the hell out. But that only egged the red head on further. Your eyes bounced back and forth between the two of them before Gimli relented.
He bowed his head, “My lady.”
Echoing his actions you responded, “Gimli.” Before turning your attention back to the prince. Your eyes finally were able to scan his features. Not a hair seemed out of place. He was exactly as you remembered.
“Welcome home.” You gave him your biggest smile feeling like you could finally relax after seeing him alive and well.
He wasted no more time before pulling you into a second bone crushing hug. He had never been so forward causing you to let out a slight stutter in surprise of his actions. It was the last thing you had expected from him. But then again, who knew what he went through out there. Legolas was a strong warrior, but you knew how deeply this could impact anybody who had to go through it.
“I have missed you.” He whispered into your ear not letting his arms go from around you. He had no clue how his words were affecting you in that moment. Suddenly you felt that stupid little crush, that was surely love at this point, bubbling up from the depths of your heart that you had long since locked away.
When he pulled away after a few moments he took the time to look you over just as you had moments prior. He didn’t drop his hands from around your waist though, simply holding you loosely in his embrace. You had never felt his eyes or his hands on you heavily before or that you had noticed in the past, “I have missed you beyond words Legolas. I have spent a year and a half filled with the dread of the thought you may never come home. Seeing you here is the greatest gift Eru Ilúvatar could have bequeathed.”
It was then that Legolas knew just how deep your feelings ran for him just as they had run for you. He too had spent the better part of a thousand years being absolutely in love with you, his favorite elf, but making no indication of it. For he thought you may have eyes for someone else. He could not risk losing you in the event you said ‘no’ to his request to court you. But by the way you were looking at him he knew that was wrong. Your love laced eyes could not break away from his gorgeous blue ones.
He knew he needed to take the next step with you. Gimli was right. His dwarf friend spent the better part of the journey home convincing him he needed to ask the question he had been dying to ask you. He wanted to court you. Spend the rest of his middle earth life and the next one with you. He had never been so sure of that. The thought of courting another elleth felt wrong. It was you. It was always going to be you.
“Gimli was not lying, my lady.” Even though it came out as a whisper your ears could pick it up with no problem.
That shocked you. Was he admitting the same thing that you were? Did he have feelings for you too? “Pardon?”
He grinned seeing your dumb struck face, “You do in fact occupy my every thought. You are the reason I am here now. I fought for middle earth, yes. But for you more. Thinking of your smile pulled me out of the darkest of times
Your lips parted in utter shock at his admission, “Legolas, I…” You were at a loss for words as you processed his confession to you. Your heart was giving you away completely though as it beat faster than it ever had before.
He continued seeing as you were rendered speechless, “It was only ever you. It was only every going to be you, my love. You are my very best friend Y/N. I would never want to continue this life with somebody who was not you. It is only you. It will only ever be you.” He paused finding the courage to say what had been on the tip of his tongue for centuries, “I love you.”
Your jaw might have been on the floor at this point, “You love me?”
He nodded with a nervous expression, “More than you will ever know.”
That was all you needed before you walked forward, butting yourself right against his chest, “That is a relief my prince. As I love you too. More than you will ever know.”
Euphoria. The truest form of euphoria pulsed through your body as you too admitted what had always been so hard to admit.
His expression melted to that of pure elation. Gently he placed his hands under your chin, cupping your face so carefully, “May I begin to court you, my love?”
“I would be so honored Legolas.” Your head was turned up as you looked into his eyes for likely the millionth time. It was different this time. Charged with love and lust. Like you were looking at a new Legolas. One that you could get to know at a much deeper level.
He brushed his thumb over your lips sending shivers racking throughout your body, “Only you. Only ever you.”

Chapter 1- Knowing One's Place
Tumblr media
Summary: You and Legolas have been friends since childhood, but as you become adults, King Thrandruil, father to Legolas, begins to fear the Greenleaf legacy is threatened by your affection towards each other.
Author Note: Character introduction, Y/N, Legolas x FemaleElf, Elves, Royalty, Kings, Lords, Prince, Princesses, Mentions of Weapons and War, Lord of the Rings movie references/Pre Fellowship of the Ring, Sindarin language, Sindarin to English translations
*Suitress-Female suitor
*heni-, nin réd- understand, my son
*bein -iel- fair daughter
Italics signify flashbacks and character thoughts.
~~~~~~~~
You remember your childhood quite fondly with Legolas. Since the pair of you have been able to walk, your parents would always find you and Legolas pursuing adventures in the thickets surrounding Mirkwood. Legolas’ father, Thranduil, Elvin King of Mirkwood, perceived no threat at the time since you were merely children at play. As the two of you grew into young adults, he sensed he would have to intervene sooner rather than later when your endearments heightened towards one another. His longstanding ambition was to preserve the purity of the Sindarin royal bloodline, regardless of the cost. Your father, however, Lord Elrond of Rivendell, permitted you to be youthful playmates, and decided to not predetermine the future for you and Legolas as you progressed into adulthood.
~~~~~~~~
You shared many of the same interests as Legolas. Although you each excelled in different battle related skill sets, you would each tutor the other to nurture the other’s drawback until you’ve become a master at it. For instance, Legolas was a superior archer, and would assist you with your aim and accuracy. He often took you to the river near the kingdom to go bowfishing after you’ve mastered stationary targets. You outrivaled most Elvin warriors in swordplay, so you trained with Legolas four times a week to refine his already elevated fencing abilities.
Thranduil has often scolded Legolas for lavishly spending hours upon hours a day with you when he should be sustaining his royal obligations as Prince of Mirkwood. During his adolescence, Legolas’ punctuality suffered significantly at the expense of your engagements together, which irritated his father and in turn, frustrated yours.
Your father being a more forbearing parent, Elrond had a heart to heart with you and Legolas about imperial responsibilities and the toll it may take if you fail to fulfill them. Since then you each made sure to be more mindful of the time you spent with one other. Last thing you or Legolas wanted was to impair any good standings you had with each other’s families and the provinces.
~~~~~~~~
Legolas once again finds himself in his father’s study being lectured for his ongoing mischief with you in the forest as of late. A song and dance which Legolas was growing very weary of as a grown elf.
“Father, my affairs with Y/N isn’t all for naught. We practice worthwhile ploys daily together which would prove valuable in the event of an attack.” Legolas justified.
Thranduil turned to his son with an exasperated expression.
“My son, more evolves from these encounters than you realize.” He stated.
Legolas tilted his head curiously. “Go on.” He insisted.
Thranduil sighed then continued. “The time you waste with Y/N could be time spent considering a *suitress since you’re of age for marriage.”
Legolas rolled his eyes then averted his gaze out the window, remaining silent.
Another annoyed exhalation left Thranduil before he continued.
“Legolas, please *heni-, nin réd,” his father pleaded, “existing as a royal means you serve your kingdom, and one of those responsibilities is to make sure the noble bloodline remains pure. You will unite with a thoroughbred Elvin princess to preserve that lineage.”
Legolas looked back at him. “Father, you speak of me as if I’m a steed to showcase for breeding. And you suspect too much. Y/N and I are simply companions, nothing more.” He reassured.
Thranduil cast his son a look of disbelief.
Legolas turned on his heel and left the room with no other words, leaving his father disgruntled once more.
~~~~~~~~
Lord Elrond has spent many a day walking the gardens of Rivendell with you, discussing you and your 3 siblings duties as royalty, battles he’s won and lost, distant lands he’s travelled whilst befriending the beings and creatures that resided there, and above all, how ethereal and divine your mother, Lady Celebrían, was in life.
“She was celestial, Y/N.” He reminisced. “Your brothers Elladan carries her wit and mischievousness whilst Elrohir holds her aptitude for intricate knowledge and appreciation of solitude. Arwen possesses your mother’s gift of patience and empathy. You, my daughter, gained the desire for valor and adventure… which I am at a loss of how or why.” He said shaking his head with a weak yet amused smile.
You laugh gently. You always enjoyed your evening strolls with your father on the kingdom grounds.
A long pause lingered before your father spoke again.
“Y/N, I’ve been meaning to discuss something of importance with you.” He declared.
You look up at him concerned. “Yes? Everything alright, father?” You asked.
He casted a soft smile at you. “It’s nothing terrible, *bein -iel,” he reassured, “I spoke with his majesty, King Thranduil-“
You sighed quite audibly, expressing your displeasure at the mention of your comrade’s father.
Elrond shook his head choosing to ignore your escaped crudeness.
“-and he voiced concern of the amount of time Legolas has been squandering with combat practices, while he should be concentrating on his stately duties.”
You look at your father affectionately skeptical.
“His ‘stately duties’ as in, choosing a princess to wed?” You dared to question.
Elrond directed a look of shock towards you.
“I didn’t say that-“ He began the effort to recover with an authoritative tone.
He clearly tried to reduce the level of concern on Thranduil’s behalf about your relationship with Legolas. Nonetheless, you saw right through your father's ruse, finding it quaint and entertaining.
You chuckled respectfully, “Father, I’m aware that Legolas has 'stately duties' to carry out.” You respond, emphasizing ‘stately duties’ sarcastically in an imitation deep voice.
Your father groaned, massaging his eyelids with his forefinger and thumb hoping to tame the headache you’ve been giving him for the majority of your life.

With this talk of The Hobbit, I just realized that Tauriel is a block between 2 fairly shipped incest ships from the movies. (Kili/Fili and Legolas/Thranduil.) Well, she would be if those ships had actually had a chance at being canon. But, like... DAMN, girl! 😭
Yeah, it's pretty funny that the love triangle happened to interrupt, so to speak, two of the most popular incest ships in the series. Whereas you've got countless other characters with no relatives in the movie.
I don't think it helped with her popularity.

I find it fascinating that they let Legolas go on the journey, because speaking in terms of politics, letting the only known Prince of Mirkwood go on a life-threatening journey to Mordor, presumably, without letting the king of Mirkwood know, is batshit insane.
Random elf: my Lord, are we sure about this?
Elrond: Yup. Because if he does die and the mission fails, Thranduil will kill us faster than Sauron will.

The journey of the Fellowship was one fraught with danger and uncertainty yet amidst it all, a tender bond began to blossom between you and Legolas. Gandalf had brought you along as the healer, but it was Legolas who captured your attention with his ethereal grace and unwavering kindness towards you. From the moment you laid eyes on him, you felt a pull towards Legolas that you couldn't quite explain. Perhaps it was the way his eyes sparkled like sunlight filtering through the trees, or the gentle softness of his voice as he spoke of the wonders of middle earth. Whatever it was, you found yourself drawn to him more and more every day.
At first, Legolas treated you with the same courtesy he extended to all members of the Fellowship. Yet, as the days passed, and your interactions became more frequent he couldn't help but feel a stirring in his heart whenever you were near. It was as if a veil had been lifted, revealing a newfound depth to his feelings that he hadn't realized before. As the days turned into weeks the subtle shift in dynamics within the Fellowship did not go unnoticed by the other members. Aragorn with his keen perception honed by years of ranging across Middle earth was among the first to pick up on the blossoming affection between you and Legolas. He observed the lingering gazes, the gentle touches, and the shared smiles that passed between you. Though he said nothing, a knowing look passed between him and Boromir whenever your eyes met.
Gimli, ever the gruff but good-hearted dwarf couldn't resist teasing Legolas about his newfound fondness for the human healer. "I see you've taken quite a liking to our healer, Master Elf," he remarked one evening with a twinkle of amusement in his eye. Legolas merely responded with a raised eyebrow and a secretive smile, neither confirming nor denying Gimli's suspicions.
Even Boromir, burdened with the weight of his own quest and the responsibility of protecting the hobbits couldn't help but notice the subtle shift in Legolas' demeanor whenever you were near. He observed the way Legolas would seek out your company during their brief respites. For you there was a softness in his eyes that betrayed his usual stoic gaze.
Yet, it was the hobbits who truly brought the matter to light as their curious natures were unable to resist the opportunity for a bit of mischief. Merry and Pippin in particular took it upon themselves to play matchmakers. Much to the amusement of the rest of the Fellowship sans you and Legolas.
"I say, Pippin, have you noticed the way Y/N looks at Legolas?" Merry whispered conspiratorially one evening as they huddled around the campfire. The two of you were lost in conversation. So much so that Legolas wasn’t even paying attention to the comments around him. His focus was solely on you.
Pippin, his eyes wide with excitement, nodded eagerly. "Aye, Merry, it's as plain as the nose on Gandalf's face! She's smitten, that's for certain." Earning the laughter of the hobbits at that remark and a smack on the back of the head from Gandalf.
Armed with their newfound knowledge, the hobbits embarked on their mission to uncover the truth. And though Legolas and you remained oblivious to their antics, the spark of romance that had ignited between you could not be denied. Sam and Frodo, ever the loyal and steadfast companions watched the unfolding dynamic between you and Legolas with a mixture of amusement and quiet support. While they appreciated Merry and Pippin's enthusiasm they also understood the delicate nature of romance amidst the perils of their quest.
At first, Sam and Frodo exchanged knowing glances whenever Merry, and Pippin attempted to prod you or Legolas about your feelings. However, as the hobbits' antics grew more persistent they decided it was time to intervene albeit in their own subtle way. "Perhaps it's best to let them be, Merry," Sam murmured one evening as they watched you and Legolas share a quiet moment by the fire. "Love has a way of finding its own path after all."
Frodo nodded in agreement. His gaze thoughtful. "Indeed, Sam. And if Legolas and Y/N are meant to be, then nothing we say or do will change that." While Merry and Pippin continued their matchmaking schemes with gusto, Sam and Frodo opted for a more hands-off approach. They were content to watch the budding romance between you and Legolas unfold organically.
Gandalf the wise and enigmatic wizard, had a keen intuition that often surpassed the understanding of those around him. When he insisted on bringing you along as the healer for the Fellowship he did so with a subtle knowledge of the bonds that would form among its members. This included the burgeoning connection between you and Legolas. Though Gandalf didn't overtly push you towards Legolas, his gentle guidance and sage advice often served as a catalyst for self-discovery. He recognized the spark of potential between you and Legolas, understanding that love knew no boundaries, not even those between different races.
In quiet moments by the campfire or during their long marches across middle earth, Gandalf would offer words of wisdom and encouragement as he nudged you towards introspection and self-awareness. Through his guidance you began to unravel the complexities of your own heart slowly coming to terms with the depth of your feelings for Legolas. It was during one such conversation with Gandalf that the truth finally dawned on you. As you confided in him about your confusion and uncertainty regarding your growing affection for Legolas, Gandalf listened patiently, his eyes twinkling with a knowing light.
"My dear Y/N, love is a powerful force that transcends race and circumstance," Gandalf said, his voice gentle yet firm. "Do not shy away from the feelings that stir within you. Embrace them, for they may lead you towards a happiness beyond your wildest dreams."
And as you gazed into Gandalf's wise eyes, a sense of clarity washed over you as if a weight had been lifted from your shoulders. In that moment you understood that your feelings for Legolas were not a mere fleeting fancy, but a deep and profound connection that had blossomed amidst the trials and tribulations of your journey.
Tumblr media
As the days stretched into weeks and the Fellowship journeyed through the untamed landscapes of middle earth Legolas found himself increasingly drawn to your side. There was an undeniable magnetism between the two of you. A pull that you couldn’t quite put your finger on. He savored the moments when you tended to his wounds, relishing in the gentle touch of your hands against his skin. There was a soothing quality to your presence. A warmth that seeped into his bones and chased away the shadows of doubt that lingered in his heart.
Yet, it wasn't just your healing abilities that captivated Legolas. It was the way you listened intently as he spoke of his homeland, your eyes alight with genuine interest and curiosity. In your company he felt understood in a way he never had before as if you saw beyond the facade of the stoic elf prince into the depths of his soul. And as he watched you laugh and joke with the hobbits a soft smile tugged at the corners of Legolas' lips. There was a lightness to your presence that filled him with a sense of joy he hadn't felt in ages. It was a feeling that he couldn't quite put into words.
It was during one such quiet moment by the campfire that Legolas finally admitted the truth to himself. As he watched you interact with the hobbits a surge of warmth washed over him igniting a fire within his chest that he couldn't ignore any longer. It was then that he realized he wanted more than just friendship with you; he wanted to explore the depths of this newfound connection, to see where it could lead.
As the night settled around the campfire, casting its warm glow upon the Fellowship. Merry and Pippin seized the opportunity to indulge in their mischievous tendencies. With conspiratorial grins and playful nudges, they pulled you aside, their eyes dancing with excitement. "Alright, Y/N, spill the beans," Merry said with a lopsided grin, leaning in closer as if sharing a secret. "What's going on between you and Legolas?"
You blinked in surprise, caught off guard by their sudden interrogation. "I... I don't know what you mean," you stammered, your cheeks flushing crimson with embarrassment.
Pippin chuckled, shaking his head in mock disbelief. "Oh, come on now, Y/N. You can't fool us! We've seen the way you look at him."
Your heart skipped a beat as you fumbled for a response, desperately trying to come up with an explanation that wouldn't reveal the true depth of your feelings. "I... uh...I just...admire his...hair," you finally blurted out, the words sounding feeble even to your own ears.
Merry and Pippin exchanged incredulous looks before bursting into laughter, their mirth echoing through the quiet night air. "His hair?" Merry exclaimed between bouts of laughter. "Is that all?"
Pippin nodded, wiping tears of laughter from his eyes. "Oh, Y/N, you really are something else."
You couldn't help but join in their laughter, though a part of you cringed at the absurdity of your own words. How could you have been so foolish as to think that admiring Legolas' hair would suffice as an explanation for the complex emotions swirling within you?
And as you glanced across the campfire to see Legolas with his back turned to you chatting with Boromir did a sheepish smile playing on your lips. You couldn't help but wonder what he must think of your clumsy attempt at deflecting the truth. Little did you know, he had overheard the entire exchange. His own heart swelling with affection at the realization that your feelings for him ran deeper than mere admiration for his hair.
As the laughter subsided and the hobbits' playful teasing continued, you found yourself squirming under their scrutiny. Merry and Pippin exchanged knowing glances, their mischievous smiles widening as they prodded you further.
"Come now, Y/N, there's no need to be shy," Merry teased, nudging you with his elbow. "We all know there's more to it than just his hair."
You sighed, feeling the weight of their relentless questioning pressing down on you. "Alright, fine," you admitted reluctantly, your cheeks burning with embarrassment. "Maybe I... maybe I do like him."
Merry and Pippin exchanged triumphant looks, their grins widening into smirks as they teased you mercilessly. "Ha! We knew it!" Pippin exclaimed with a grin. "You fancy the elf prince!"
You flushed even deeper feeling the heat of embarrassment spreading through your entire being. "It's not like that," you protested weakly though the truth of your feelings hung heavy in the air.
But beneath their teasing, there was a genuine warmth in Merry and Pippin's eyes, a silent reassurance that they meant no harm. And yet despite their best intentions a seed of doubt had already taken root in your mind. Why would an Elven prince like Legolas with his ethereal beauty and noble lineage ever be interested in a lowly healer from Eriador? It seemed like a fantasy too far-fetched to even entertain. It was a cruel trick of fate that mocked your deepest desires.
The hobbits noticed the shift in your demeanor, their playful teasing softened into genuine concern. Merry and Pippin exchanged worried glances, their smiles fading as they realized the depth of your insecurity. "Hey, Y/N, what's wrong?" Pippen asked, his voice gentle as he reached out to place a comforting hand on your shoulder. "Did we go too far with the teasing?"
You shook your head, trying to force a smile despite the heavy weight of doubt pressing down on your chest. "No, it's not that," you murmured, your voice barely above a whisper. "It's just...I can't get my hopes up, you know? Legolas is an Elven prince, and I'm just a lowly human from Eriador. He could never feel the same way about me."
Merry’s eyes widened with understanding. His expression filled with empathy. "Oh, Y/N, don't say that," he said softly, his voice tinged with sadness. "You're worth more than you know. Legolas sees something special in you, I'm sure of it."
But your heart felt heavy with doubt, the weight of centuries of tradition and prejudice bearing down on your shoulders. How could you ever hope to compete with the storied history and timeless beauty of the elves? It seemed like a fool's errand. A futile pursuit that would only end in heartbreak. As you poured out your heart to Merry and Pippin, unaware of Legolas' keen ears tuned in to your conversation the Elven prince's own heart ached with a bittersweet mixture of longing and sadness.
Though he had overheard snippets of your conversation with the hobbits, it wasn't until now that the full extent of your insecurities became painfully clear to him. As he turned away from his conversation with Aragorn, his attention fully captured by your words. A pang of empathy pierced through his chest. To hear you speak of yourself with such self-doubt and resignation broke Legolas' heart in ways he couldn't fully articulate. How could you not see the radiant light that shone within you? the kindness and strength that had endeared you to him from the very beginning?
Legolas felt a fierce determination ignite within him. A resolve to show you just how extraordinary you truly were. He longed to sweep away the shadows of doubt that clouded your mind and to replace them with the unshakeable belief in your own worth that you so rightfully deserved.
With a silent vow in his heart, Legolas turned his gaze back to the campfire. His mind ablaze with thoughts of how he could show you the depth of his feelings and the true beauty that lay within your heart As Legolas listened intently to your conversation with Merry and Pippin his heart swelled with a mixture of sadness and determination. He couldn't help but feel the weight of their shared concern for you.
Across the campfire, Merry and Pippin exchanged knowing glances. Their expressions filled with a silent plea for Legolas to intervene. With a subtle nod and a meaningful look they motioned for him to join them, hoping that he could offer you the reassurance and support you so desperately needed.
Legolas met their gazes with silent understanding. His resolve strengthening with each passing moment. With a graceful movement he rose from his seat by the fire. His footsteps were light as he made his way towards you. He was careful not to draw attention to himself.
As he approached Merry and Pippin stepped aside, their eyes flickering with a silent message that Legolas understood all too well. With a grateful nod he took their place by your side, his presence a comforting presence in the midst of your turmoil. Though you remained unaware of his silent exchange with Merry and Pippin, Legolas couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude towards the hobbits for their unwavering loyalty and support. And as he settled in beside you his gaze met yours with a tenderness that took your breath away
“Y/N,” he began, his tone gentle as a whisper of the wind through the trees, "I couldn't help but notice that something seems to be troubling you.."
Your cheeks flushed with embarrassment at the realization that Legolas had sensed your inner turmoil and you couldn't help but feel a pang of self-consciousness. "I'm sorry, Legolas," you murmured, your gaze flickering away from his intense gaze. "I don’t mean to burden you with my concerns."
But Legolas reached out to gently tilt your chin upwards, his touch sending a flutter of warmth through your chest. "No need to apologize, mellon-nîn," he said, his voice filled with a tenderness that melted away your fears. "I want you to know that you are worth more than you could ever imagine."
Your heart swelled with gratitude at his words, a flicker of hope igniting within you as you met his gaze. "That is kind of you to say." you whispered, unable to contain the doubt that still lingered in your heart. "But I'm just a human healer, and you're... you're an Elven prince. In another life we would never have even crossed paths.”
Legolas smiled with a softness in his eyes that spoke of a depth of feeling you had never known before. "We do not choose who we were born to," he said, his voice barely above a whisper yet filled with a quiet intensity, "you are kind, and brave, and full of a light that shines brighter than any star in the sky."
Your breath caught in your throat at his words, a warmth spreading through your chest at the sincerity in his gaze. As you looked into his eyes, you felt a flicker of something stirring deep within you. A longing that you couldn't quite name.
"But," he added with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, "if it's my hair that has caught your fancy, I must say, I've spent centuries perfecting it."
As Legolas spoke, his words carrying a playful yet genuine warmth, your mouth dropped open in realization. A blush flooded your cheeks as you processed his teasing remark, a mixture of surprise and embarrassment washing over you. How could you have forgotten that Legolas possessed such keen perception, his senses far surpassing your own?
Feeling a sudden urge to hide away from him, to shield yourself from the intensity of his gaze, you instinctively turned away. Your gaze fixed on the flickering flames of the campfire. It was easy to forget that Legolas was not just a companion but an elf prince with abilities and perceptions far beyond your own. Even as you sought to hide your embarrassment you couldn't help but feel a flutter of warmth in your chest at Legolas' playful teasing. There was a familiarity in his words, a shared moment of levity amidst the weight of your doubts and insecurities.
As Legolas noticed your sudden shyness a playful yet tender smile graced his lips. "Don't hide away from me," he said softly, his voice carrying a warmth that enveloped you like a comforting embrace. "If it makes you feel any better, I quite like your hair too. In fact, I like so much about you..."
You turned back to him, your heart racing with a mixture of apprehension and hope. "You do?" you asked, unable to hide the hint of surprise in your voice.
Legolas nodded. His gaze unwavering as he met your eyes. "Yes," he said, his voice steady and sincere. "I've admired you from the moment we met. Your kindness, your bravery, your unwavering spirit... They've all captured my heart."
Your breath caught in your throat at his confession, a rush of emotion swelling within you. "Legolas..." you whispered, your voice filled with awe and disbelief.
He reached out to gently cup your cheek, his touch sending shivers down your spine. "I know that our paths may be uncertain, and the road ahead may be fraught with danger," he continued, his gaze soft yet determined. "But I want you to know that my feelings for you are anything but uncertain. I care for you deeply, Y/N. I want nothing more than to explore this connection between us."
Tears welled up in your eyes at his heartfelt words. A sense of overwhelming joy flooding your heart. "I... I feel the same way," you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.
As Legolas leaned in closer, a tender smile gracing his lips he pressed a soft kiss against your cheek. It was a gentle lingering touch that spoke volumes. A silent promise of the love and affection that lay between you. Feeling the warmth of his lips against your skin sent a rush of butterflies fluttering in your stomach. It was a sensation that felt like the soft caress of a summer breeze. You closed your eyes savoring the moment. You let yourself feel the depth of his emotions conveyed in that simple gesture.
And as Legolas wrapped an arm around your shoulders, pulling you close in a comforting embrace, you nestled into him, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat against your own. In that embrace, surrounded by the soft glow of the campfire and the tranquil beauty of the night, you felt a profound sense of peace wash over you letting you know that everything would be quite alright.

~~~~~~~~
Despite Thandruil and Elrond’s verbal disincentives, during your month-long *State Visit to Mirkwood, you and Legolas shamelessly continued your daily escapades together. Coincidentally, Thandruil’s distain of your connection with his son encouraged you to socialize with Legolas more frequently. You found yourself meeting him in the kingdom’s many hidden gardens multiple times throughout the day. Once in the early mornings when the sun barely peeks over the horizons, emitting its fiery hues across the sky as it rises, and once more as the dark blanket of night spreads with its scattered stars while the sun sets for the day.
And oddly, not only have you been affording your remaining hours with Legolas but spending that time lazily wandering the woodlands conversating rather than fencing or practicing archery. You disregarded it as becoming aloof with your daily battling routines since you both become quite the specialists, and the practices have become effortless to you both.
You stroll with Legolas on the grounds on an evening where the breeze is as soft as the velvet cloak you don, and the full moon’s glow as vibrant as the blue of his eyes. Your stomach flutters like the fireflies bustling around every time he looks upon you.
“Why is this? It is only Legolas. Perhaps I am not well?” You think to yourself.
“Y/N, are you alright?” Legolas asked. “You seem distracted.”
You look at him quite startled. “Yes, Legolas. I’m alright. Just admiring the views of your father’s Alfirin orchards. Always a majestic sight.” You complimented.
If there was one thing you could appreciate about Thandruil, was his adoration for earthly beauty. All his gardens adorned with the rarest of flowers and exotic plants.
“These groves are tended to by the most elite nature mavens. Each handpicked by my father, of course.” Legolas stated. “He takes great pride in the appearance of the kingdom grounds.”
“As if I didn’t know, *nin mellon.” You said tenderly smiling at him.
He looked at you and smiled.
“Legolas, have you noticed we’ve been spending more time than usual together as of late?” You asked.
He looked at you puzzled, almost alarmed.
“Have we? Does this trouble you?” He asked.
“Oh no, *nin mellon!” You soothed. You thought back to what your father had said about Legolas focusing on ‘stately duties’ and preparing to select his bride to be. The thought sent a stinging pain through your body.
“Jealousy?” No…” You thought.
“To be truthful, Legolas, my father spoke with me about you needing to concentrate on your next task as Prince of Mirkwood, and that I am a hinderance to you completing that task.” You finally admitted.
Legolas remained silent, fixing his stare ahead on the path before you with his hands interlocked behind him resting on the small of his back.
You continued, “I suppose your father has alerted you to this as well?”
He nodded.
You looked down towards the gravel, not sure what to say next. You both remained quiet for a time until Legolas spoke again.
“I don’t fancy to find a bride to wed, *nin bein mellon.”
You couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief hearing his words.
“And why is this, *nin cóon?” You dared to ask.
He hastily met your gaze, unsure how to answer.
“Because my heart believes there hasn’t been an elf worthy of the name Greenleaf as of yet. I’m afraid the ideals for my bride are set on a pedestal higher than any of them can achieve.” He declared.
This intrigued you. You were curious to what specifications were held for his model female elf. Afterall, he was your dearest and closest friend, and he trusted you with his most personal secrets. The topic of his desired woman was surprisingly a mystery to you.
“Oh? And what, pray tell, are such ideals that the strapping Legolas has for such a bride?” You asked with a slight impish tone. You slightly nudge into his shoulder, urging him to answer your question.
You both smile, as he playfully pushed you back.
Legolas looked up at the night sky when you both reached a clearing in the forest.
“I suppose I haven’t really thought about it.” He stated finally. You looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
“I figured my wife would always be selected for me regardless of my values, so I accepted my fate to whomever was chosen for me.” He finished.
“But you must have imagined a being you would fancy in reality.” You suggested. “Go on, you can tell me, Legolas.” You assured hooking your arm with his.
He bent his elbow to accommodate your arm and placed his opposite hand on top of yours. You can see he was in deep thought. Looking into a distant space in his heart for what constitutes his need for the perfect Elvin bride.
“She would have to be my equal in every way, yet allow me the disposition of being her protector…her healer, her confidante, her guide, her lover…” He trailed off, casting you a quick side eye to see your reaction.
Your heart skipped a beat when he mentioned ‘lover.’ As much as you’ve thought of Legolas, a lover is not one you’ve ventured to imagine of him.
“He is a warrior, a competitor, a leader, my friend, my opponent.” Now that you think about it, “he is indeed…my equal.”
You quietly gasp at the sublime vision that just occurred to you.
“Had Legolas just described me as his ideal wife?” You wondered.
Your heart pounded against your chest like an Orc war drum.
Legolas snickered, noticing you were distracted again.
“*Nin bein mellon, what has your mind in such a busy state?” He asked with an inquiring grin.
You calmly refocus and meet his eyes with a soft smile.
Legolas’ breath caught in his throat, and his knees almost feeling weak beneath the sudden weight that befell him, awaiting your response.
“Just wondering if such an elf exists for you, *nin mellon.” You answer. “I’m sure she’s out there awaiting the brawny Legolas as we speak.” You added teasingly.
Legolas released a heavy sigh, slightly annoyed, yet amused by your mischievous wit.
~~~~~~~~
The next morning, you found Legolas wasn’t in the usual place you meet him to greet the sunrise. This happened once in a great while when he had special tasks assigned by his father that required him to travel, therefore, having to leave before dawn.
As you began to walk towards the castle, you hear footsteps approaching at a fast pace.
“Y/N! Wait!” Legolas called to you, running towards you with a sense of urgency.
Your spirit soars seeing him approach you, yet you’re also confused that he’s there.
“Legolas? What ever is the matter?” You began.
“Your father has called a gathering of utmost importance at Rivendell. My father elected me to attend, as well designated by Lord Elrond to escort you home immediately.” He interjected.
“Oh? Well, I shall prepare my things right away.” You respond.
“Make haste, *nin bein mellon. I shall meet you in the courtyard with our horses.” He had a tinge of excitement in his voice.
This could only mean one thing: a quest was afoot, and Legolas couldn’t be more thrilled about it.

"Mirkwood would judge Legolas so hard for Gimli-" Wrong. Gimly has consistently charmed the pants off every single elf he's come across. The elves of Lothlorien went from wanting to kick him out to loving him in like 2 days. He's Galadriel's special little guy. My man is out there singlehandedly tearing down centuries of prejudice because he's just so damn charming. When he was nearing the end, he didn't even go to Durin's halls - he just went with Legolas to the undying lands so he could hang out with elves for the rest of time. Gimli would have Thranduil and the rest of the elves of Mirkwood wrapped around his dwarven finger in a week's time. Ideal son in law except for the beard.
