“Fred, I really thought we were done having this conversation.”
“We would be—we should be. But you aren’t listening to me.”
If you weren’t currently navigating an incredibly windy road in an Outer Banks downpour, maybe the windiest one, you wouldn’t have been able to resist the urge to roll your eyes. But your visibility was already poor, the rain pelting your windshield so intensely your wipers were barely doing enough on their fastest setting. You can hardly hear your boyfriend—ex-boyfriend—over the sound of it, but he’s trying anyway.
“We broke up two weeks ago,” you sigh, slowing down even more as another turn comes up. “Why would I still be coming home with you? All the way out in June?”
“Because,” Frederick says slowly, tone dripping with condescension. Even with all of the distraction in your environment, it’s still easy to remember why you two are no longer an item. He never made you feel like an equal to him, more like something to be handled—something he wanted to fit into his life because it made sense to him. “I told my parents I was bringing you, and you know I hate being a liar.”
“Frederick, it’s not like you would be lying,” you ask. “Things happen. How can they even be expecting me to come anymore?”
“Maybe, just maybe, because when they came to campus to meet you, you said you would,” he accuses.
That had been the most awkward night of your life, by far. Barely two months into your relationship, Frederick had sprung his parents on you—literally. He picked you up for dinner, and after insisting you change your dress not once, but two times, failed to mention your reservation was for four, and not two. They were the kind of nice that you could see right through, overly-so, to the point where it was transparent. You wondered how you hadn’t seen it with their son. Maybe you had, and didn’t want to admit it.
“Hell no,” Frederick scoffs. “Did you tell your parents?”
Aggravated as you are, you don’t have the heart to tell him that your three-month fling was hardly important enough to put on your parents’ radar. You might have told them this weekend, when you were home, but things didn’t make it that far. “Yeah, they know.”
“Wow,” he says, his voice softer on the speaker in your car. A rare moment of vulnerability from him, that came so few and far between in the time you dated that you never really felt like you were getting to know him, but just getting used to the idea of what it means to be with him. “So this is like, it, huh?”
That throws you for a loop, because for all of the ways you never seemed to be on the same page with him, you thought your breakup was pretty final. It doesn’t really get more final than a front porch discussion after weeks of feeling like this was going nowhere. “I mean, yeah, Frederick. Did you think it wasn’t? I hope I didn’t give you that idea.”
“I just thought you’d honor the commitment,” he says.
“What do you—what? Fred, we aren’t together. Why would I come home with you, three months from now, for a family event?”
“Because I asked you to come! And you said yes, and I told my family. I can’t show up alone after that, Y/n/n.”
A crack of thunder brings you back to the car, the road, the rain, the dangers of distraction. You feel your shoulders jump involuntarily, your car jerking slightly with the movement. “Fuck. Okay, Fred, I’m sorry—I am, but it’s raining, and—”
“I can barely hear you, Y/n,” Frederick says a little harshly, and you can picture him rolling his eyes. “Can you go somewhere quieter?”
“I know, I’m sorry, but the rain—”
“What? Look, are you coming or not?”
“Frederick, I just don’t—fuck!”
Unless your hometown suddenly became a hot spot for earth quakes, you’re pretty sure the tire underneath you had just popped. You mutter expletives while your mind practically dissolves in fear, but you’re able to pull your car off the road and into the grass—smashing your hazard lights button and taking a series of deep breathes, your hands shaking.
“Call me back when you have a different answer, alright?”
“Wait, wait, Fred, I think I just hit a nail—o-or, I don’t know, but—can you just, just stay on the phone with me, or—”
“Y/n, it’s literally so hard to hear you right now. I feel like I’m just talking circles around you anyway. Call me back, or fucking don’t, I guess, I don’t even know anymore.”
The rain sounds even louder once the call clicks off. The playlist you’d had on continues once again, and you almost feel like crying because you’re so rattled by the conversation, your tire, the insane weather—all at once, it’s just so much.
Your parents and brother went to the mainland for the afternoon—you passed, because you had a dentist appointment (which was also the only reason you came home this weekend, but a hug from your dad after a breakup was a convincing factor in an of itself; you wish he could hug you right now).
After a five minute pause to lean your head on your steering wheel, you mentally prepare yourself to get out of the car. It wasn’t raining when you left this morning so you are ill-prepared for the weather, wearing bike shorts and a crew neck sweater thats quickly drenched when you face the rain, and—yep, definitely flat.
When you call the mechanic, he informs you the tow will take two hours, because apparently you weren’t the only driver on the island struggling with the weather—and you throw your woefully unhelpful Triple A card into the cup holder once you hang up.
“You’ll be back by dinner time, yes? You know your dad wants you there.”
“Comin’ straight home after I get my car, Rose,” Rafe says, trying in earnest not to sound annoyed at Rose’s reminder. Because it had to be about the fifth one this morning, and the third in this car ride to the mechanic’s alone. “Promise I’ll be there.”
“This one is important to him, Rafe,” she presses, pulling into the parking lot.
“I know,” Rafe says. “I’ll be on time, wearing my Sunday best.”
Rose rolls her eyes, but she cracks the smallest smile. “Alright, see you at home.”
Rafe practically jogs across the parking lot and into the garage after thanking Rose for the ride, ripping off his hood as soon as he’s inside. His family’s mechanic (and almost every other Figure 8 family’s mechanic), Lou, is busy on the phone, so he bides his time with hands stuffed in his pockets, craning his neck until he sees his truck parked in the back, looking well and fixed.
“Sorry, kiddo,” Lou says into the phone, flipping through some papers on his counter. “It could take a while. All my guys are out. Weather’s crazy—you’d think we’d be ‘bout used to it by now, huh? Well, I’ll get someone out there soon as I can, so sit tight. I’ll call you in an hour or so to check-in, alright?”
He sets the phone down into the receiver, breaking out into a smile when he spots Rafe. “Rafe Cameron. How are you, boy?”
Rafe meets his handshake when Lou comes around the counter, smiling back at him. “Good, I’m good. You?”
“Well, I’m just fine. Although, can’t figure out why you’d bring your car all the way back here to be serviced. You know they have mechanics in Georgia, don’t you?” Lou jokes, rifling through the drawers for Rafe’s keys. “I’m sure I could give you a recommendation.”
“Nah,” Rafe says, leaning his elbows on the counter. “Why would I need that when I have you?”
“Silly,” Lou says, chuckling, sliding Rafe his keys and turning back to his computer. “Let me find your paperwork and you’ll be all set.”
Rafe swings his keys around on his forefinger before a clap of thunder booms throughout the garage. He glances behind his shoulder at the rain pouring down, visible through the open doors. “Man, it’s coming down out there.”
“Isn’t it?” Lou says.
“You guys busy?”
“Slammed. Roads are flooding. Every tow truck’s out right now. All two of ‘em,” Lou laughs, ripping the receipt off of the printer. “Poor Y/l/n girl is stuck out there on Elder’s Pass.”
Rafe drops his keys to the countertop, standing up straight. “Y/n?”
“Mhm. Will’s daughter,” Lou says, looking at Rafe expectantly when he doesn’t take the pen Lou offers him. Rafe shakes his head, taking the pen and examining the receipt closely. He never usually would, he never has, he trusts Lou. He’s been taking his car here since he could drive. But his ears are ringing at the mention of your name, his hand tightening around the pen. He didn’t even know you were home. “Poor thing just needs a tire change. Must’ve ran something over. Not worth it to drive on three wheels in this.”
“No, you’re right. But… so she’s just she’s just sitting out there right now?” Rafe asks carefully. Another clap of thunder sounds, and Rafe chews his bottom lip between his teeth as he looks outside once again. It was pouring by now.
“Yeah, ’til we can get someone out to her. Doubt she can change a tire herself,” Lou chuckles. Rafe would laugh along, because Lou is definitely right, but he can’t right now, thinking about you sitting out there all alone. “Your age, right? You two were friends?”
“Yeah, uh—yeah,” Rafe says, his feet backing him away from the counter and toward where his truck was parked. “Friends. You said she was out on Elder’s Pass?”
“Yep,” Lou says, already turning back to his desk. “Hell of a place to get stuck in a storm like this, all those curves.”
“Yeah,” Rafe says, his pace picking up with the rain. He knows that road. He knows you hate that road. “See ya, Lou!”
“See ya. Careful out there!”
The rain got worse as the minutes ticked by. Louder, heavier. You could barely see anything by the time a pair of headlights reflect in your side mirror.
It’s not a tow-truck from Lou’s but it’s definitely a person, a person getting out of his car and booking it in the rain toward your driver’s side window, hardly checking for traffic that thankfully isn’t coming.
Your hand moves to the door lock instinctively, heartbeat picking up in your chest as you squint at your mirror, trying to make anything out in the rain.
But you’d recognize that blue parka anywhere.
Rafe Cameron taps on your window softly with two fingers, aforementioned parka pulled tight over his head, a baseball cap peeking out. You try to fix your fish mouth before you lower the window. “Rafe? What are you—”
“Are you alright?” he says, voice raised so he can be heard over the rain.
“Yeah, yeah, fine. My tire’s flat, but I’m okay.”
“Okay, uh,” he says, looking up at the sky. “I think this is a cloud burst. Hopefully it’ll pass in a half hour or so, and then I can change it for you. You have your spare kit still, right?”
“Oh, Lou’s coming. I called,” you say, watching droplets of water collect and fall from the brim of his red cap.
“I know, I was just at his. He told me you were out here,” Rafe says, voice lowering. “But it’ll take forever, Y/n/n. Really, if we just wait it out in my truck, I can change it for you no problem.”
“Rafe…” You’re speechless beyond that, because you haven’t seen Rafe in months, probably. You had no idea he was even home like you were this weekend. And yet you can’t find yourself the tiniest bit surprised that he turned up right in your lap, here to save the day like he always did.
“Y/n. Kinda soaked to the bone here.”
“Sorry, fuck. Sorry, yes, Here, you can get in my car, so your seats don’t get all wet,” you say, unlocking the door, shying away from the water that’s splashing into your car from the open window.
“Come to mine. I have leather seats. And beach towels,” he laughs, blinking rain drops off of his eyelashes. One trails down his tanned cheek slowly, but he wipes it away before it can reach his pink lips as you were anticipating.
“Okay,” you nod. You roll up your window, and realize that Rafe is still waiting out in the rain for you, so you hastily gather your phone and keys before opening the door. Your crewneck doesn’t have a hood, so you use both hands to cover your hair as much as you can as the two of you rush to the silver truck. Rafe stays between you and the road the entire way, before a hand on your back guides you to the passenger side.
You climb inside, lamenting the way your already soaked clothes and hair drip onto Rafe’s nice car seats, even though he said it was fine.
“Jesus, wow,” Rafe says, once he’s shut you in and climbed into his own seat. He tears off his parka, throwing it into the backseat. He twists around to fish out the towels he’d been talking about, and you purposely shift your gaze away from the strip of skin exposed by his t-shirt when he does. The fabric is partially wet so it sticks to his skin, that’s glistening just slightly. You hadn’t seen him in a while. “Here.”
You smile awkwardly as you accept the towel, rubbing it over your hair and then flipping down his visor to check your mascara hadn’t run too much. “Thanks.”
“‘Course. You warm enough? I’ll run the heat.”
A shiver runs down your spine at that but you just wrap the towel around your shoulders, shaking your head. “Don’t waste your battery.”
“It’s no problem,” Rafe says, taking his cap off and throwing it onto the dash before running the engine to get the heater going. He reaches over to the side of the panel that controls your half of the car, turning on your seat warmer, too. “Not like you dressed for the weather, so, least I can do.”
“Excuse you,” you laugh in surprise.
“No, really,” he continues. “Did you even check the weather this morning? Or are you too California now?”
And you can’t help but laugh because it’s just so Rafe, to sit across from you after he very casually came to your aid across the island because he heard you needed help, knows you hate this road and driving in the rain, and then make fun of you right after like none of the previous is true. His smile warms you to your toes, god, you missed him.
“You’re the one wearing shorts and fucking top-siders! Are those still in in Georgia? Thought you would’ve left the Sperry’s in high school.”
“How every dare you, Y/l/n,” he says, hand pressed to his chest in mock offense. “I practically rescue you—”
“Oh, fuck off,” you laugh.
“You were damsel in distressing hard core, kid,” he says, flicking his head toward your car. “Why are you even out here? Why are you even home?”
“Dentist appointment and dentist appointment,” you say, flashing him a smile. “Missed my parents and dog, too. Felt like a good excuse to come home. You?”
“My dad had a thing,” Rafe says, and you just hum in recognition, not pushing it any further. You never did when it came to Ward. “Wanted to get my truck looked at, too. It was making a noise the whole way home.”
You nod, feeling the engine purr underneath you for the first time. “Ah, that makes me feel great about sitting in your car right now.”
“Relax. I was picking it up after service. That’s, um, how I heard about you being out here. Lou told me it was you, and this road’s kinda weird, you know, so I just thought I’d come see if I… yeah,” he says. The faintest blush blooms across his cheeks, and you fiddle with your hair, flipping the visor back up. Rafe pats the dash, the sound breaking the slightly awkward lull in conversation. “But anyway, she’s all good now.”
“That’s good. And thanks for coming, by the way. I hate this road, I don’t know why I took it,” you sigh. “Trying to romanticize my hometown too hard.”
Rafe laughs loudly. “Here, let me get some music going. Maybe that’ll help.”
You smile at him wordlessly as music fills the car, and he quirks an eyebrow.
“What?”
You wince, smile shifting into a cringe. “You and your dad music.”
“The Beach Boys are not dad music,” he counters.
“My dad listens to the Beach Boys.”
“I always knew Will had taste. How else would you romanticize the Outer Banks? We technically live on an island,” he explains, sounding far too technical. He breaks out into a shit-eating grin. “You know, ‘paradise on earth.’”
“This weather and the nail in my tire is really selling that slogan right now,” you say. But you just sit back as the next song kicks on, tapping your fingers against your thigh to the rhythm. The rain isn’t letting up, for now, but you’re warm again, nearly dry, and in a car with Rafe Cameron.
“Man, I fuckin’ missed you, Y/n/n.”
You turn and Rafe’s looking at you, looks like he has been for a while. His eyes are soft, his damp hair hanging over them slightly, but you can still see everything. You can still feel every feeling this boy made you feel, ones that you’d memorized one day but assumed you’d forget by now, flooding your body, nervous system, whatever—something, so quickly and so powerfully that any response you through you might have—any remark, joke, anything—is just gone from your mind and you can only think of one thing to say back. It makes you feel raw and open under his gaze, because it’s the truth. “I missed you too, Rafe.”
“You did not teach me how to drive.”
“I mean,” Rafe sucks his teeth, rubbing a dramatic hand over the scruff on his chin. He would’ve shaved if he knew he’d be seeing you today. Then again, he wasn’t exactly forced to drop everything and drive to Elder’s Pass and wait out a rain storm with you when his time might be better spent prepping for that dinner thing he can’t seem to care about any more. “I definitely did, though.”
Your nose crinkles up, but Rafe sees that hint of a smile on your lips. You’re remembering the impromptu driving lessons Rafe had roped you into after you cancelled your third straight road test appointment at the DMV because of nerves. You’d spun him around Figure Eight about ten times, and Rafe convinced you to push about one mile closer to the residential speed limit with every loop. “You did not!”
“And clearly I did a horrible job,” Rafe continues, gesturing to your Range Rover, sunken down on one side. “Can’t even avoid a little nail? Shocked they even gave you the license.”
“They didn’t really cover that in my course. Instructor was kind of a dud,” you quip, lip pulled between your teeth and eyebrows raised in mischief when Rafe scoffs.
“Yet here I am to save you.”
“Here you are,” you agree coyly.
The moment snaps in half when your phone, discarded in the cupholder, buzzes incessantly. You take one glance at the screen and roll your eyes, silencing it immediately. But it goes off again and Rafe clears his throat awkwardly as you repeat the motions. “Parents wondering where you are?”
“No,” you say quietly. Rafe doesn’t mean to pry, but there isn’t much else to do that stops him from raising his eyebrows expectantly. “My ex.”
“Oh.”
“I was on the phone with him earlier, when I—y’know,” you trail off. You tuck the phone in your pocket, and Rafe distracts himself with watching a raindrop slide down the driver’s side window, collecting more drops on its way down.
“You can answer it. I don’t mind,” Rafe says, before he can think of anything else to say.
“No, I’m good. I might call him back later,” you say, not sounding too perplexed over it.
“Is this like… I dunno,” Rafe blurts.
“What?”
“Is he like, an ex-ex, or is there like, a chance—”
“Oh, fuck no,” you laugh, the sound startling Rafe. He looks back over at you and you have an arm propped up on his center console, eyes hidden by your hand, but he can still see the grin. “No. No chance.”
“Are you guys still friends?”
“Not really. He’s in my major, which sucks. Horrible idea, don’t recommend,” you laugh.
Rafe knew he saw some guy around on your Instagram, but you were always pretty coy on social media. He could never tell for sure; Kelce didn’t say anything, and Rafe didn’t dare ask. Topper and Kelce knowing about his crush on you for all of high school was already embarrassing enough, he didn’t need it known that there was any sense of lingering curiosity, some what ifs or well maybe one days he could never get to quiet. The proximity was only making it worse.
“He sounds great.”
“The greatest,” you remark, rolling your eyes.
“So it wasn’t a good phone call?” Rafe tries.
You groan, and Rafe thinks he’s fucked it all, but then you turn to face him, leg propped up on the seat and knee digging into the back of it. “When we were dating still, he asked me to come to this family wedding this summer. I said yes, but then when we broke up I just assumed we wouldn’t be going, right? And then he texted me about the flights last night, and I’m like, ‘what the fuck? What flights?’”
“Oh no,” Rafe grimaces. “He didn’t book them already, did he?”
“No, because he wanted my input on economy versus economy plus,” you say, lips pulling into a tiny smile.
“Oh, so he’s a cheapskate, too?”
“Leave him alone. He didn’t grow up on Figure Eight.”
“Alright,” Rafe rolls his eyes. “He calls you up about uncomfortable plane seats with no leg room or free drinks or hot towels. What’d you say?”
“Well, no, obviously?”
“It’s the towels, isn’t it? The deal breaker? Or maybe the drinks,” Rafe says, considering. “I seem to remember you and Gretchen getting bombed on our senior trip.”
Your mouth purses, and Rafe sees you fighting that smile. “Do you ever shut the fuck up?”
“Never, you must have forgotten. But, okay, he calls you up, you say no, and then…? How did we get where we are now?”
“No, he just,” you trail off, eyes falling to where your nails pick at each other. “I don’t know. He was just yelling about how I made a promise and whatever. I think he’s mostly concerned about what his parents will think.”
“Relatable,” Rafe quips, but you don’t crack a smile. “He was a dick, wasn’t he?”
And it should give Rafe a sense of satisfaction he supposes, to hear about the guy he’d wondered about being a complete asshole who couldn’t keep you long. But it doesn’t. The crestfallen look on your face actually feels like the opposite, like a gut punch or the wind knocked out of his lungs. “A little bit. Got worse once we broke up, clearly. It’s my own fault. I probably never should’ve went out with him in the first place.”
“So he’s an ex-ex.”
“An ex-ex-ex-fucking-ex,” you laugh. “It never felt like, real? I was just… all my best friends have significant others right now, and it’s like, we’re all hanging out together at the house or whatever and everyone’s all coupled up and I was just… there? Or even when we’d go out I’d just see them with their boyfriends and, I dunno. It felt good to fit in for a second but I never really felt that longing I always pictured I would. He just wasn’t it for me. Not even close.”
“Do you believe in that?”
Your head rests on the seat, your eyes curious upon him. “Believe in what?”
“An ‘it.’ Someone being ‘it.’” Rafe clarifies.
You duck your head down, picking at your nails again. “Yeah, like one hundred percent.” Rafe hums, and you narrow your eyes. “Is that silly?”
“No,” Rafe says. “No. I don’t think so.”
“Do you believe in it?”
Rafe nods slowly, his lip coming out from where it’d been caught between his teeth without his realization. “Yeah, I do. Someone for everyone and all that.”
“No, that isn’t the same thing.”
“What do you mean it isn’t the same thing?” Rafe says.
“There’s like the concept of someone being it for you and then the concept of everyone being able to find someone, copy?”
Rafe smiles. “Not at all, Y/l/n. Do tell.”
“I don’t know, Rafe. It’s like—when you find that person, that’s not someone. That’s the one,” you describe.
“Okay, but could there be more than one?”
“How do you mean?”
“Like,” Rafe sighs. He slides down in his seat, turning away from you. The rain is lessening up now, he can tell from the front windshield. “I dunno. What if you think you find the one, but for whatever reason, it doesn’t work out. Would you ever be able to find another?”
“Hm, good one,” you say. “Well. Maybe they weren’t your one then.”
Rafe doubts it. He watches you fuss with your hair and the towel again, exposing more skin on your neck, and he really doubts it. “I’m sorry he wasn’t your one.”
“I’m not. But it’s whatever,” you shrug, but Rafe can tell it probably kind of isn’t. You loved too hard. “What about you? Breaking hearts down in Georgia, I suppose?”
“Oh god,” Rafe says, smiling despite himself because that couldn’t be further from the truth. “You know I like to fly solo these days.”
“Someone’s gonna pin you down one day,” you say. The statement hangs heavy in the silence between you two, which makes Rafe realize the silence at all. The rain’s stopped.
“Enough of that,” Rafe says, opening his door. “C’mon, Y/l/n. I’m gonna teach you how to change a tire.”
As it turns out, Rafe teaching you how to change a tire looks a lot like Rafe doing all of the work while you try your best to follow along. And even though you try your hardest, it’s difficult when he’s all biceps stretching out his t-shirt sleeves and nimble fingers working expertly and, god, the one time he swipes the back of his forehead with the bottom of his t-shirt and you literally have to pretend to stare at the puddles on ground.
“You’re not getting any of this, are you?” he jokes, smiling up at you.
“I’m trying, but this is probably the furthest thing from my forte,” you admit, though you know he can’t be surprised.
“It’s probably just as well,” Rafe says. “Doubt you’ll ever have to change your own tire.”
“You did a fantastic job, from what I can tell.”
Rafe chuckles, standing when he’s finished. He kicks it with his shoe, as if to show you it’s sound—as if you wouldn’t trust him. “It’s good to drive around on for a little. But I’d take it in as soon as you can.”
“I fly back soon, so I’ll probably have Dylan do it for me this week,” you say, thinking out loud.
“How is he?” Rafe asks, adjusting the hat on his head, packing the tools back up. “Did he make varsity this year?”
You’re thrown off by the kindness of his remembrance, but hardly surprised. “Yeah, he did. Of course, now he’s gunning for the captaincy as a junior.”
“I’m sure he is,” Rafe laughs. “And Wilbur?”
“Adorable as ever. What about Sarah and Wheezie?”
“Good, Sarah’s debut is this summer. Can you believe she’s even old enough?” Rafe says, putting the tool set and your deceased tire back in your trunk. He shuts it, crossing his arms before looking at you again. “Makes me feel ancient.”
You giggle, but you suppose you can relate, having a brother the very same age. He’d probably be an escort this summer—you really wish you’d be home to tease him about it. “Does Ward have her escort picked out yet?”
“That’s actually a very sensitive topic at Tannyhill, currently,” Rafe says conspiratorially. When you furrow your eyebrows in confusion, he goes on. “Did I tell you about the pogue she started dating, last summer?”
“No,” you gasp, smiling at the scandal of it all. “No way.”
“I’m not even surprised. Sarah’s never cared what he thought,” Rafe says, and you detect a hint of pride in his tone. “But she’s really going for it with this one.”
“Ward will get over it. Besides,” you sigh, stretching your arms over your head casually. “Not like he can be any worse than my escort.”
Rafe scoffs. “I was fucking great. A true gentleman. Literally the only reason you didn’t trip in those heels. What do you mean?”
“I’m pretty sure you showed up to the last rehearsal stoned.”
“We—we all did! You did!” Rafe accuses. Of course he’s correct—you were in fact all incredibly high, taking turns with a bottle of Visine on the way back from the quarry at the Island Club. If Rafe hadn’t let you hide behind his broad frame during the waltz, you’re sure you would’ve been found out. Your tells were always more obvious than his.
“I was a deb, I’m pretty sure I was allowed to,” you say, like that means anything.
“Oh, my mistake,” Rafe says, brushing past you, collecting the towel he’d had bunched up on the ground to kneel on while he got to work. He slings it over his shoulder. “Pretty sure your parents couldn’t stand me though.”
“No, they—you,” you fumble, suddenly very interested in the ground. “It wasn’t like that.”
Looking back, it’s hard to believe Rafe was even your escort at all. First of all, the girls had to ask the boys—not your forte, not in the slightest. And all of the suggestions your mom had made (of course, based on other moms she’d already talked to and made arrangements with) were boys you didn’t like very much or didn’t know well at all. Margot had already stolen Kelce, your go-to, and Topper had been snatched up by Emily. So really, it was kismet, the morning after that year’s Midsummers—the deadline your mother had given you for picking someone before she picked for you.
“Have you decided? You seemed far too busy running off with Ward Cameron’s son last night to make the rounds with the gentlemen I suggested for you,” your mother had said primly, eagle eyed behind her cup of tea at breakfast that day.
“Ward’s boy? Rafe?” your dad had asked, suddenly interested enough to put down his newspaper. You ignore him.
“Mom, my dress was ruined after that waiter spilled on me. I was embarrassed, you guys were busy, Rafe took me home,” you explained, for what felt like the millionth time since the night before.
“Oh, lovely. Maybe he can take you to the deb ball, too,” she laughed, brushing imaginary crumbs off of her skirt.
You know exactly why you hadn’t though of that before—but why hadn’t you thought about that before? “I’ll ask him.”
You’d skipped right upstairs to text Rafe and seal the deal, momentarily terrified he’d say no—or worse, that he was already escorting someone else. But Rafe’s text came back almost immediately:
It would be an honor, Y/l/n
Promise I won’t let any clumsy waiters within a ten foot radius
Rafe’s usual, flirty banter had made you realize for the first time that as much as this was about you getting to choose for yourself, go with someone you actually enjoyed spending time with and not just who your mom could see you marrying one day, this was you and Rafe Cameron going to an event together, as dates. He was your date. There would be dancing.
“Maybe just your mom,” present-day Rafe concedes, bringing you back to the moment. “She still scares me.”
“You and me both,” you admit.
“You gonna be around this summer?” Rafe asks. “Pretty sure everyone’s coming back.”
You wince sadly, and he smiles anyway. “No, I’m working in California. I might come by for a week or two toward the beginning or end, though, if I can swing it.”
“Figure 8 could only be so lucky,” Rafe teases. “That sucks, though. Summer probably won’t be the same.”
“I’m sure you’ll all be fine,” you say. “I’ll miss it though.”
And miss it you will, but just being in Rafe’s general proximity for the last hour or so has reminded you why the space was good. Why the distance was good.
The mostly natural, if only a little bit forced, growing apart of two high school friends, the living different lives on different coasts—it was all good for the teenager inside of you that was always overtly fond of the boy in front of you. The debutante who watched her escort with stars in her eyes, so bright you have no idea how he never saw them. She was terrified, enamored, maybe even a little bit in love.
Rafe was intoxicating, and being around him again almost felt like a relapse.
It felt like you should call Frederick, maybe say yes to that wedding after all. Remind yourself of the more realistic version of your future.
“It’ll miss you, too,” Rafe says heavily, and all you can do is stare for a moment.
“I should let you get going,” you say quickly. Why was it that years later, Rafe is still right there when you need him? He’s safe, and dependable, and he reminds you of home—things that should endear you to him and do, they really really do. They always have. “I’ve put you out long enough.”
“It’s no problem at all,” he assures, not even slightly clued in to your internal turmoil. “Really.”
You smile, climbing back inside of your car, while Rafe hangs around, presumably to watch you leave.
“Are you gonna tell your ex to fuck off?” he asks suddenly, causing a laugh to bubble up in your throat. But you shrug.
“I don’t know. It’s in Napa, and you know I love wine,” you joke, but his face is stone. Dirty beach towel over his shoulder, black streaks all over his hands and arms.
“Don’t let boys yell at you over the phone, alright?” he asks, then ruffles your hair. “And don’t go to Napa.”
You can only nod as he shuts your door for you, stepping back to give you room to pull away. Rafe seems satisfied with your answer, smiling where he stands with his hands tucked into his pockets, eyes never leaving your car as he watches you leave.
You would know, because you can’t stop looking in the rear view.

Wowww I was on this fan forum from 2006 where they were speculating about Justin and Britney’s relationship post breakup, and all my theories and speculations about them in 2006-2007 are confirmed!
Britney literally left out a whole chunk of stuff that happened between her and Justin in 2006-2007 (right before her meltdown) in her memoir and acted like he was already out of her life by then, BUT weirdly enough all these events between them were captured in Justin’s 20/20 Experience part 2 album (2013).
I mean… all of the tabloids and rumors and gossips posted in this thread (it goes on for another 3 more threads until mid 2007) were basically confirmed in Justin’s album. Like the craziest part is that the fans were posting all these stuff in like, 2006 and Justin kind of confirmed these stuff like, 7 years later lol. I am feeling so vindicated now!!
Some points:
1. Daily Mail tabloid about Britney bombarding Justin with 10-20 calls everyday after her divorce with Kevin and him having mixed feelings about it because he tries to be there for her but feels like she’s using him as a crutch and wants her to get herself together and come out on top —> Justin sang about it in ‘Only When I Walk Away’ in 20/20 part 2
2. OK Magazine reported that Justin was seen going to Britney’s pre-birthday celebration in a club with JC and the MMC gang in Dec 2006 (after divorce from Kevin) and she was caught on video dancing to SexyBack, other reports saying they hooked up (he ended things with Cameron in Dec too), other tabloids saying he flew down to Manhattan when Britney called him saying she ended things with a boyfriend and stayed at his rented flat until 4am —> TKO in 20/20 part 2
3. OK Magazine reported they saw Justin and his mom driving into Britney’s Malibu house right after her breakdown to meet up with her family despite him being busy on tour for FSLS, reports of him asking his mom to keep watch on Britney’s condition until she gets better, Justin sending a letter to Britney while she was in rehab telling her that he wishes they met when they were older because they would probably be married with kids by then and told her he’s rooting on her to get better - Pair of Wings, Blue Ocean Floor in 20/20 part 1 and part 2
4. There are other stuff like Justin and Britney saying in one interview that they haven’t spoken to each other for 2 years or since the breakup, then in other interviews Britney would say she talked to him once or twice after the breakup, Justin would say he called her up after her breakdown to ask if she was ok, Britney was papped leaving his house in March 2003, Fred Durst telling an interviewer that Britney ditched their date to visit Justin in London, tabloids of Kevin and Britney arguing because she and Justin still talk on the phone, etc. They’re literally contradicting themselves so I say they’re just lying about not contacting each other. - ‘Amnesia’ on 20/20 part 2 was written due to these conflicting feelings about her I guess.
I think there’s more but I need to listen to 20/20 part 2 again to see if Justin has addressed some of the tabloids/rumors in his songs.
But yeah… sus af that Britney conveniently left out this entire chunk from her book. I mean, she didn’t even mention about him trying to talk to her after the disastrous 2007 VMAs performance backstage but was stopped by her team (their mutual friend Nikki Deloach actually confirmed all this on her podcast actually so it did happen).
If one day Justin decides to tell his side of the story about his relationship with Britney, I hope he will address this ‘black hole’ period of time, but then again he has technically already told it in 20/20 Experience part 2 so…

I joked that I was going to make a Lifetime movies rec list a while ago and Truly being bored at work has given birth to worse ideas, so this is one for my fellow cinephiles lol
My Highest Recommended Lifetime Movies in the Order in which they Changed my Life
Small Sacrifices (1989)
I'm honestly unclear whether this was intended originally to be a Lifetime movie because they showed it on a few different networks, but this was the first one that I ever remembered seeing and it Rocked my world. It's a true story about a woman named Diane Downs who attempted to murder her children and my mother and her friends lived for this film in a way that like is actually bonechilling. But I was spellbound by Farrah Fawcett in this movie, I thought she was the greatest actress I'd ever seen, and the story was really dark and scary and felt disgustingly salacious. So everything I'd come to like about Lifetime movies lol.
No One Would Tell (1996)
All my mom loved in the world was to wake up hungover on a Sunday and turn Lifetime on and proceed to fall asleep again while my tiny child peepers beheld Truly heinous shit. This one is one that I continue to make people watch because I can't be alone with the memories, but basically Candace Cameron is in a horribly abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Fred Savage, and he ends up murdering her and it is Incredibly sad and traumatic. There's a historic scene where she's taking a shower and her entire body is just littered with bruises and I will Never forget it!!!!!!!!! Very, very dark. But....iconic.
Odd Girl Out (2005)
This was the point in time where Uncle Television was very much concerned with telling young girls about bullying (for a different and just as good interp of this theme see ABC Family's Cyberbully starring Emily Osmont). But this one was the first and best to me, I related to it very much as an ostracized teen. It stars Alexa Vega, and she's a teen that has her whole popular friend group turn against her and she gets bullied bad lol It gets dark but only for like 20 minutes and then her redemption arc is nice. I loved this movie to death until I discovered Thirteen (2003), which is Way darker and had girls kissing in it for a few seconds.
Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal (2008)
This movie was my identity. This movie was my child. Every time it was on TV I stopped whatever I was doing and watched it. I have no idea why, because I have been told people mainly find this one boring, but I think it's mostly due to the fact that I really do love movies where teenagers behave badly with impunity. This was a Ripped From the Headlines Lifetime movie about a roving band of cheerleaders that terrorize everyone in their wake at a Texas high school and basically get away with it because one of their mom's is the principal. I think it is a lol and a half, it's actually pretty competent, and there's like Good performances in it from actual actors. Highest rec possible.
Liz & Dick (2012)
Lindsay Lohan gets so unfairly maligned for her performance in this, it's sick. My most cherished memories of my last year of High School are watching this movie late at night and reading all of Lindsay's blind items and every article that was being written about her failed comeback. Again, I think she's actually okay in this, but for a lot of people it was insulting to cast Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor and to those people I say haters get thee behind me. It's fun, it's campy, it's not too long, everybody watch it and relax for a while.
Flowers in the Attic (2014)
DARK DARK DARK but also STUPID STUPID STUPID. Seriously this movie has no business being as funny as it is given the subject matter. Basically a bunch of kids are uprooted by the death of their father and their mother forces them to live in the attic of her wealthy parents home under false pretenses, and incest ensues. Which, again, sounds really upsetting but is actually pretty funny a lot of the time lol. Their evil god-fearing grandma is played by Ellen Burstyn and she's So over the top, and their mom is my queen Heather Graham who is actually pretty chilling. The other movies in the saga are Also pretty dark, stupid, and fun, but this one was a legit phenomenon. Me and my college roommate would host viewings of it in our dorm room, it's really fun to watch in a crowd of people that don't get darked out by poorly handled incest.
Harry and Meghan: A Royal Romance (2018)
This is part one of a trilogy, but it's probably the best one even though the third is pretty fun. Honestly, you guys, this one is just Nice. Truly dgaf about the irl Harry and Meghan but this movie is actually a very fun love story, and it's sweet and has a few legitimately compelling twists and turns, and ultimately has a really satisfying ending. The actors playing Meghan and Harry are stellar, it's funny, it's cute, another highly recced film.
Who Killed Jonbenet? (2016)
An unhinged Eion Bailey performance for the ages with added child murder. Sarah and I are Definitely recording an episode about this one in the future, but truly it's almost too bleak to be chic and gets saved at the last minute by how inadvertently goofy it is. Eion's character develops a psycho-sexual (to me) fixation on an older detective who comes in and basically upends his investigation, and everything about it gives "but daddy please" and I love it and hate it at the same time.
Death of a Cheerleader (1994/2019)
Both versions of this movie are elite, the original is truly iconic and the remake is actually deluxe and makes some changes that I think make it an actually interesting movie. In Lifetime fashion it is Based On a True Story (fun fact: in my younger years I listened to My Favorite Murder and this story gets mentioned in one of their first episodes and they offhandedly mention that the murder weapon was like 8 inches long and That is a fact that has stuck with me in the middle of the night). I'd say watch them both, because the OG has a Tori Spelling performance that cannot be missed and is just a basic mean girls comeuppance story, but the redux is a lot more thoughtful and actually reflects some humanity on all characters which (if you haven't noticed) Lifetime isn't always great at lol.
Too Young to Be a Dad (2002)
UGH. Me and my girlfriend Just watched this and honestly that's a shame because I wish I'd had this movie my entire life. Paul Dano is a teenager that loses his virginity and impregnates his friend in one fell swoop and he has to Step Up and become a Man as like a fifteen year old, which sounds crazy and is but is legitimately a captivating movie. And Paul Dano is sooo fucking good in, it's not even a joke, watch it for his performance alone. I laughed, I cried, a perfect film (even though they never address abortion as a viable option lol Lifetime can only go so far ig).
This was Purely just for me but if you read this and watch these movies please lmk what you thought ~

OBX Masterlist
Since some of my fics are getting long, here’s a masterlist of everything I’ve made so far in relation to Outer Banks! It will continually be updated as more fics, blurbs, and requests are added!
Also, my requests are open! I don’t generally do smut, but I’m open to mostly anything else!
JJ Maybank 
Requests:  
Jump -  You are John B’s sister and you’ve been following him around your whole life. After deciding to make your own path, you find yourself caught up with a boy who is no good and JJ is the only one who can get you out of it.
Wedding Dress -  JJ makes a promise to himself that he’s now not sure he can keep.
Run - You’re John B’s sister and after sending him off on the Phantom, it’s up to you to cover for him. But Ward Cameron is still your legal guardian and he comes to collect his property.
Ransom -  John B’s sister is taken by the square groupers. In exchange for her life, they ask for the compass and a heavy ransom price. It’s a race of time as the Pogues, with the help of Sheriff Peterkin, journey into the marsh to save her life before the clock runs out.
Not So Unrequited -  in the middle of an argument with your best friend, he says something to you that you had never wanted to hear.
i love you -  your relationship with JJ had always been rocky, built on a mutual desire for affection. that doesn’t mean he would never break your heart.
fill the void - she always felt alone, so when he needed her most, she couldn’t resist.
promises, promises - You and JJ have an unspoken thing, passed only though stolen glances and half serious flirting. But the day after he takes the fall for Pope, you find yourself standing at a crossroads; do you step in to protect him from his dad, or do you stay out of it?

With her dad in police custody and her mom once again AWOL and refusing to pay for legal council, Elma and Ms. Lana struggle to get through the trial with a court appointed lawyer. At the end of her rope, Elma finds herself juggling friends, family, rivals, and enemies as she struggles to keep her wits about her and do the one thing she’s always done; protect Kid.
Girl With No Heartbeat - (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)  After a near death experience, JJ is saved by a girl in the water. When he and the Pogues find her washed ashore the next day, they are more than surprised to discover that she isn’t your everyday girl. (mermaid/siren au, canon divergence)

Sweet as Honey, Hard as Steel -  JJ’s girlfriend is the complete opposite of everything one would expect. A straight A student with big life goals, Elena has never been the drinking, smoking, fighting type. And JJ wouldn’t have it any other way.
Coward -  Your mom just passed and your absentee father has come to collect you. But that means leaving the life you knew and loved, including your best friend (and a little more), JJ Maybank. But he isn’t ready to hear what you have to say on your last night together.

When they say it takes a village, she wasn’t entirely sure they meant a bunch of teenagers. (post-canon, I haven’t decided who the love interest will be or if there will be one at all, so that’s why its here)

Leaving Riverdale (Riverdale one-shot)
This is a Riverdale (CW TV show) one-shot. It is the sequel to The Transfers. I couldn’t find good gifs of the characters in the one-shot, so I had to use pictures. The pictures are not mine. I found them on Google. All credit goes to the rightful owners.

Author’s note
There are some things you need to know before you read this one-shot.
Jacob Maxwell is Kevin’s boyfriend. He’s a Northsider. He’s gay. He started dating Kevin at the end of sophomore year. He was a writer for the Blue and Gold, and he was in charge of lighting and sound design for the musicals Kevin directed. I was not a fan of the Hedwig storyline, so I’m going to say Riverdale High School put on a production of Little Shop of Horrors instead.
Lucy Collins is Reggie’s girlfriend. She’s a Northsider. She was a River Vixen. She wasn’t involved in the musicals Kevin directed. Reggie dated Josie in sophomore year. Josie broke up with him and left Riverdale to go on tour with her father, Myles, at the beginning of junior year. Sierra stayed in Riverdale with Tom and Kevin. Reggie started dating Lucy shortly after Josie left Riverdale.
Nana Rose died in junior year. Penelope was sentenced to life in prison following the Gargoyle King reveal, and ownership of Blossom Maple Farms, Thistle House, the Belmont Lodge, and the Maple Club went to Cheryl. She sold Belmont Lodge and the Maple Club to the rest of the Blossom family. Toni moved into Thistle House. Cheryl went into business with Veronica, and the Blossom family’s maple syrup became part of the non-alcoholic rum Veronica sold at La Bonne Nuit. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Because Alice, Polly, Cheryl, Kevin, Toni, Fangs, and Principal Weatherbee never joined the Farm, Cheryl and Toni never found themselves having to look after Polly’s twins. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Because the Pretty Poisons never existed, the yearbook didn’t have a page dedicated to them, but it did have a page dedicated to the Serpents and the musicals. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Charles never dated Chic. He never visited Chic in prison. He left Riverdale after the Farm shut down. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Fred gave Archie the jalopy after they fixed it up in junior year. Archie got Fred’s truck shortly after Fred died. Fred’s brother, Frank, left Riverdale shortly after Fred’s funeral. Mary and her girlfriend, Brooke, stayed in Riverdale. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Because the Stonewall Prep storyline never happened and Gladys and Jellybean moved back to Toledo, Jellybean didn’t make disturbing videos of the citizens of Riverdale. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Shortly after Pop Tate died, Veronica signed over ownership of Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe to his granddaughter, Tabitha and sold La Bonne Nuit to the Southside Serpents, thus ending her partnership with Cheryl. La Bonne Nuit became the new Whyte Wyrm. I forgot to mention that in The Transfers. Tabitha doesn’t plan to franchise Pop’s. The Whyte Wyrm is a bar. It did not become a dance club like it did in season 5.
In season 5, Jughead and Sweet Pea have some new tattoos. One of Jughead’s tattoos is of Cosmo from Cosmo the Merry Martian. Cosmo the Merry Martian was a comic book published by Archie Comics in the late 1950’s. The comic was created by Bob White as a way to provide a family-appropriate comic for children with an interest in the then-current space race. The title character was the first Martian to visit Earth. In this one-shot, Cosmo the Merry Martian was an animated television show Jughead and Jellybean watched when they were children.
Betty didn’t kiss Archie. She doesn’t have sex with Archie. Betty and Jughead don’t break up, and neither do Archie and Veronica. Jughead doesn’t date Jessica, doesn’t sleep with Cora, and doesn’t kiss Tabitha. Veronica doesn’t marry Chad. Betty doesn’t date Glen. She doesn’t become an FBI agent, but she does go to Yale University and get a cat named Toffee. In sophomore year, a few months before Betty and Cheryl considered becoming Serpents, Betty had applied for the chemistry program at Yale University. She had been accepted into the program in junior year. I forgot to mention that in The Transfers.
Veronica goes to Barnard College, but she majors in history instead of economics.
Reggie doesn’t become Hiram’s right hand man. He attends Columbia University.
In junior year, Archie was interested in attending the naval academy. After Fred died, he changed his mind about attending the naval academy and decided to take over Andrews Construction. He didn’t join the army. He closed down El Royale Boxing Club. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers.
Jughead, Toni, and Fangs don’t go to college. After high school, they decided to become full-time Serpents, and so did Sweet Pea and Hannah. I forgot to mention that in The Transfers. Jughead doesn’t become an English teacher. Toni doesn’t become a guidance counselor. Sweet Pea and Fangs don’t become truckers. Like in the show, Cheryl decided not to go to college and worked to restore the Blossom name. She doesn’t become a painter. She and Toni don’t coach the River Vixens. When she isn’t running Blossom Maple Farms, she is being a Serpent. Toni does not get pregnant. Reggie doesn’t become a football coach, and neither does Archie.
Jughead outlawed the Serpent dance at the beginning of senior year. I forgot to mention that in The Transfers. If a girl wants to be a Serpent, she has to do the same thing a boy has to do if he wants to be a Serpent, with the exception of being punched by every member of the Serpents.
Shortly after Jughead published Anatomy of a Murder, he hired an agent. His agent, Sam Pansky, lives in New York. He communicates with him through e-mails and text messages. I forgot to mention this in The Transfers. He didn’t leave Riverdale. He didn’t become an alcoholic or a drug addict.
Archie got his Serpent tattoo removed shortly after he got out of Juvie. I forgot to mention that in The Transfers.
Hermione doesn’t leave Riverdale. She doesn’t appear in The Real Housewives of New York. She stays in Riverdale and continues being the mayor.
FP doesn’t leave Riverdale. He stays in Riverdale and continues being the sheriff.
In the author’s note at the beginning of The Transfers, I mentioned that Alice, Polly, Cheryl, Kevin, Toni, Fangs, and Principal Weatherbee never joined the Farm. If Polly wasn’t in the Farm, I couldn’t see her naming the twins Juniper and Dagwood, so I gave them different names. Their names are Sophia and Liam.
Jughead writes a book called The Outcasts, but it’s different from the book that was mentioned in the show.
Riverdale High School
Thursday, June 27, 2019
7:00 p.m.
In 1941, the first senior class of Riverdale High buried a time capsule the day after they graduated. Tonight, Betty, Reggie, Veronica, Kevin, Cheryl, Toni, Emma, Jake, Lucy, Hannah, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, and Archie would be burying their own time capsule.
After they buried the time capsule, Betty, Reggie, Veronica, Kevin, Cheryl, Toni, Emma, Jake, Lucy, Hannah, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, and Archie would be going to the Whyte Wyrm. After their graduation ceremony, Cheryl had brought up the idea of having a graduation party at the Whyte Wyrm. Betty, Reggie, Veronica, Kevin, Toni, Emma, Jake, Lucy, Hannah, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, and Archie thought it was a good idea.
Betty, Reggie, Veronica, Kevin, Cheryl, Toni, Emma, Jake, Lucy, Hannah, Sweet Pea, Fangs, Jughead, and Archie were standing on the football field.

“I’m putting in last week’s copy of The Riverdale Register and last week’s copy of The Blue and Gold. They were my last editions as editor-in-chief. I’m also putting in a bobby pin in case anyone needs it.” Betty put a copy of The Riverdale Register, a copy of The Blue and Gold, and a bobby pin in the time capsule.
Betty was wearing pale pink high-heeled sandals and a pale pink dress with spaghetti straps, a v-neck, and a circle skirt that reached her mid-thigh. The neckline showed a hint of cleavage. Betty and Jughead walked towards Betty’s car. Betty got in the driver’s seat. Jughead got in the passenger’s seat. Betty started the engine and drove to the Whyte Wyrm.

The new Whyte Wyrm looked amazing. The floors were made of black square ceramic tiles. The ceiling was made of white square vinyl tiles. The walls were made of wooden panels. Green, blue, red, and purple neon lights were on each wall. A green neon sign reading The Whyte Wyrm was hanging on the wall towards the right. Pool tables were tucked to one side. Booths with square wooden tables that had double-headed snakes carved into them and black leather seats were scattered around. The bar took up the majority of the wall towards the left. A man stood behind the bar.
Betty ordered a Shirley Temple. Jughead ordered a beer. Reggie ordered a club soda with a lime wedge. Lucy ordered a strawberry daiquiri. Archie ordered a club soda with a lime wedge. Veronica ordered a lemon drop martini. Kevin ordered a club soda with a lime wedge. Jake ordered a mojito. Cheryl ordered a Shirley Temple. Toni ordered a beer. Sweet Pea ordered a club soda with a lime wedge. Hannah ordered a Jack and Coke. Emma ordered a Shirley Temple. Fangs ordered a Jack and Coke.
“Betty, Jughead, Cheryl, Reggie, Kevin, Emma, Jake, Lucy, Hannah, Sweet Pea, Toni, Fangs, I’d like to make a toast to you. You’re the best friends anyone could ask for. I don’t think if I would have survived high school if I didn’t have you and Veronica by my side. I hope our friendship lasts forever. Cheers.” Archie raised his glass.

“Jughead, I should have asked this question sooner, but where did the nicknames Jughead, Jellybean, Sweet Pea, and Fangs come from?” Veronica asked.
“When I was a kid, I had a long nose and big ears, making my head look like a water jug, but I grew into them once I started going through puberty. The nickname Jughead came from some guys in my grade 4 class. Jellybean’s real name is Forsythia. It’s a mirror of my real name. I disliked the name in any form and started calling her Jellybean when she was 5. The nickname came from the type of truck that crashed and caused the traffic jam in which she was born. Nathan is a big softie when he wants to be. When I transferred to Southside High, Toni told me she started calling him Sweet Pea when they were 13 and the nickname stuck. When Francis joined the Serpents, he wanted a nickname that would make him seem more intimidating. Fangs was the first nickname he thought of.” Jughead said.

Archie rolled himself out from under the jalopy and wiped the sweat off of his forehead with a rag.
Archie spoke. “I was thinking we could drive the jalopy to Sweetwater River and watch the sunset, but all of my attempts to get it started have failed. I don’t think I’ll ever get it started.”

Betty was standing next to her car. Two suitcases were in the backseat.

Alice pulled Betty into a hug. “I’m proud of you, Betty.”

Her straight blonde hair was in layers and reached her chest. Her bangs were parted to the right and stopped just above her eyebrow. Even though she left the Serpents in high school, she hadn’t gotten her Serpent tattoo removed, because removing a tattoo was painful.

He didn’t get his Serpent tattoo removed for the same reason Alice didn’t get her Serpent tattoo removed. He had a tattoo of a jellybean on the left side of his chest. He’d gotten it shortly after Gladys and Jellybean left Riverdale for the first time. He had no plans to get it removed.

Veronica was standing next to two suitcases.
Mary’s car and Brooke’s car were parked next to Archie’s truck.
Archie would be driving Veronica to Barnard College. Mary and Brooke had come to bid Veronica farewell.
Archie took one of the suitcases from Veronica and put it in the backseat of his truck.

Matthew and Caroline were defense attorneys. They worked at the same law firm Sierra worked at. They had graduated from the University of Baltimore. They had applied to the University of Baltimore when they were in their junior year at Riverdale High. They had been accepted into the University of Baltimore when they were seniors in 1993.

When Lucy was in her freshman year at Riverdale High, her father, David Collins, died. He was a truck driver. One night, at the end of his shift, he was driving from Centerville to Riverdale, it was rainy, and the road was slippery. The truck slid off the road, flipped, and landed in a ditch.
Deanna was the math teacher at Riverdale Middle School. She had graduated from Columbia University. She had applied to Columbia University when she was in her junior year at Riverdale High. She had been accepted into Columbia University when she and David were seniors in 1993. David had no interest in college. His father ran a truck driving business. He died of cancer when David was a sophomore, and David took over the business. When David died, his fraternal twin brother took over the business.

Lucy was wearing a green t-shirt, dark blue denim shorts that reached her mid-thigh, and green low-top Converse sneakers with white laces. Her long straight blonde hair was parted in the middle. Ever since he was a sophomore, he had dreamt of becoming a gym teacher. Lucy would be majoring in English. Ever since she was a sophomore, she had dreamt of becoming an English teacher.

Polly got her G.E.D. in June of 2020. She started working at Pop’s as a waitress.
In September of 2020, Vegas was diagnosed with gastric dilatation volvulus (a stomach torsion condition), and Hot Dog was diagnosed with lymphoma (a tumor of the lymph nodes). Mary and FP decided to euthanize them.

Polly was wearing a green t-shirt and green and white plaid flannel pajama pants. She was barefoot. Her straight blonde hair reached her shoulders and was parted in the middle. She didn’t have a bra on. She didn’t have makeup on.
“Really? What’s his name?” Betty asked.
Betty was lying in her bed. Her roommate was at the library.
Betty was wearing a grey t-shirt with Yale University emblazoned on the front in black letters and black sweatpants with a white drawstring. The drawstring was tied into a bow. Her long straight blonde hair was parted in the middle. She didn’t have a bra on. She didn’t have makeup on.
“His name is Spencer Martin. We’ve been dating since July.” Polly said.
“He’s a nice guy. I’m happy for you,” Betty said.
Betty met Spencer the night she did her Serpent dance. He was born in 1999. He graduated from Riverdale High School in 2017. After graduation, he became a full-time Serpent. He joined the Serpents in his freshman year. In his junior year, his parents were killed during a fight with the Ghoulies. Sweet Pea’s parents had also been killed during that fight.

FP’s shift had ended. He decided to have dinner at Pop’s before he went back to his and Jughead’s trailer.
Archie’s jalopy was next to the jukebox. Tabitha had turned it into a memorial for Fred. A framed picture of Fred at his high school graduation in 1993 was on the hood, as well as a framed picture of Fred holding a 2 month old Archie. Mary had given her those pictures. She had painted the words “In loving memory of Fred Andrews” on the driver’s side door in white. She had painted the year he was born and the year he died on the passenger’s side door in white.
Tabitha walked up to FP.
“Good evening, Sheriff Jones. What can I get for you?” Tabitha asked.
Tabitha was wearing a Pop’s uniform. Her black ringlets were gathered behind her ears in a sleek low ponytail. Her brown eyes were framed by long dark lashes, and her cheeks were rosy. She had on nude lip gloss.
"I'll have a cheeseburger, fries, and a Coke." FP said.
FP was wearing his uniform. His short, straight brown hair was slicked back. He had a hint of stubble.
"Coming right up," Tabitha said, writing in her notepad and then walking into the kitchen.
“Here you go.” Tabitha said, setting FP’s food and drink in front of him.
FP smiled. "Thank you, Tabitha."
“You’re welcome,” Tabitha said.
Tabitha walked over to the counter to serve some other customers.
In June of 2022, Sweet Pea and Hannah moved into an apartment in the Southside.
In June of 2023, Betty graduated from Yale University, Veronica graduated from Barnard College, Kevin graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, and Reggie and Lucy graduated from Columbia University. Betty and Jughead moved into an apartment in the Southside. Archie and Veronica moved into a single-story house in the Northside. Kevin moved into an apartment in the Northside. Reggie and Lucy moved into a single-story house in the Northside.
In September of 2023, Betty started working for the Riverdale Police Department as a forensic scientist, bought a cat, and named her Toffee. Veronica became the history teacher at Riverdale Middle School, Kevin became the drama teacher at Riverdale High School, Reggie became the gym teacher at Riverdale Middle School, and Lucy became the English teacher at Riverdale High School. When Betty wasn’t being a forensic scientist, she was helping Jughead run the Serpents.

Polly was wearing a white t-shirt, green cotton shorts that reached her mid-thigh, and green ankle-length boots with high heels. Her straight blonde hair was parted in the middle and reached her chest. Her green eyes were framed by long dark lashes, and her cheeks were rosy. She had on nude lip gloss.

In Betty’s freshman year at Yale University, Gladys and Jellybean died in a car accident. FP and Jughead drove to Toledo in FP’s green 2021 Ford F-150 truck and attended Gladys and Jellybean’s funeral. Shortly after he and FP got back to Riverdale, Jughead got some new tattoos as a way of remembering them and Hot Dog. In the middle of his chest, there was a tattoo of a crown surrounded by red roses. Gladys gave him the beanie he used to wear, and roses were in her wedding bouquet. On his upper left arm, he had a tattoo of Cosmo, the main character of Cosmo the Merry Martian, a TV show he and Jellybean watched when they were kids. On his upper right arm, he had a tattoo of Hot Dog.
Jughead smiled at Spencer. “Hey, Spencer.”

Sweet Pea was wearing a black tank top, dark blue denim jeans, and black ankle-length leather boots. His tattoos were on full display. His short, straight black hair was slicked back. A small piece of hair hung on the left side of his head, stopping just above his eyebrow. He was clean-shaven.

The night before, Toni had gotten rid of her pink highlights and her belly button piercing. The pink highlights had been replaced by blonde highlights.

She had on a light amount of black eyeliner, a light amount of black mascara, soft brown eyeshadow, and nude lip gloss.

After their lunch date at Pop's, Fangs and Emma went back to their apartment.
Emma walked into her and her boyfriend’s bedroom. He followed her. He shut the door.
Emma took off her clothes, leaving her in just her green lingerie.
Fangs left a trail of kisses on the side of Emma’s neck, rubbing his hands up and down her legs. She groaned in pleasure, taking off his clothes, leaving him in just his boxers.
Emma straddled her boyfriend’s body as they laid on top of the bed. She kissed down his body, creeping closer to his boxers. He flipped them over so that he was on top. The two kissed each other all over as they made love.
Fangs and Emma collapsed on the bed next to each other.
Spencer married Polly on Saturday, September 8, 2029.
In 2030, Archie married Veronica, Jughead married Betty, Cheryl married Toni, Reggie married Lucy, Kevin married Jake, Sweet Pea married Hannah, and Fangs married Emma.
In 2031, Archie and Veronica had a baby girl and named her Audrey Andrews, Jughead and Betty had a baby girl and named her Darcy Jones, Spencer and Polly had a baby girl and named her Claire Martin, Cheryl and Toni adopted a baby girl and named her Amelia Blossom, Reggie and Lucy had a baby girl and named her Olivia Mantle, Kevin and Jake adopted a baby girl and named her Natalie Keller, Sweet Pea and Hannah had a baby girl and named her Rachel Montgomery, and Fangs and Emma had a baby girl and named her Megan Fogarty.
Audrey was named after the actress Audrey Hepburn. Darcy was named after Fitzwilliam Darcy, a character from the book Pride and Prejudice. Natalie was named after the actress Natalie Wood.
In 2032, Jughead wrote his second novel, The Outcasts. It made it to the top of the New York Times Best Seller list. It was about two nerdy boys who decided to exact their revenge by uniting the outcasts of their high school against the quarterback of the football team and his friends after falling victim to a cruel prank. It took place in Los Angeles, California and was set in the year 1994.
In January of 2035, Alice, FP, Mary, Brooke, Hermione, Sierra, Steve, Elaine, Matthew, Caroline, and Deanna retired. Archie ran for mayor. He won the election. The new sheriff he hired moved from Centerville to Riverdale in 2021. He ran the RROTC program at Centerville High School. He joined the RROTC program when he was a sophomore in 2017 and became the leader of the program when he was a junior in 2018. He graduated in 2019. He was born in 2001.
In February of 2035, Mark and Kelly retired from the Serpents.

Sophia and Liam graduated from Riverdale High two days ago. Sophia was the valedictorian of their graduating class.
When Sophia and Liam were in their junior year, she had applied to Harvard University, and he had applied to Boston University. They had been accepted at the beginning of senior year. Sophia would be majoring in history. Liam would be majoring in chemistry.
Ever since Sophia and Liam were in their freshman year at Riverdale High, she had dreamt of being a history teacher, and he had dreamt of being a forensic scientist.
From sophomore year to senior year, Sophia had been a River Vixen, and Liam had been the basketball team’s point guard.

Harvard was located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sophia was moving to Cambridge. She had found an apartment near Harvard. She would be living alone, unless someone expressed interest in being her roommate.
Boston University was located in Boston, Massachusetts. Liam was moving to Boston. He had found an apartment near Boston University. He would be living alone, unless someone expressed interest in being his roommate.
Claire was spending the day with Alice. Polly had promised Sophia and Liam that she would say goodbye to Claire, Alice, FP, Jughead, Betty, Darcy, Cheryl, Toni, and Amelia on their behalf.
Polly pulled Sophia into a hug. “I’m proud of you, Sophia."
Polly was wearing a purple t-shirt, dark blue denim jeans, and purple flats. Her straight blonde hair was parted in the middle and reached her chest. She had on a light amount of black eyeliner, a light amount of black mascara, soft pink eyeshadow, and nude lip gloss.
“Thank you,” Sophia said.
Sophia had fair skin, green eyes, and a slender figure. She didn’t have any scars, tattoos, or birthmarks. Her long straight red hair was parted in the middle. She was wearing a white t-shirt, dark blue denim shorts that reached her mid-thigh, and beige ankle-length boots with high heels. She had on a light amount of black eyeliner, a light amount of black mascara, soft pink eyeshadow, and nude lip gloss.
Spencer pulled Sophia into a hug. "I'm proud of you too."
Spencer was wearing a green t-shirt, dark blue denim jeans, and black ankle-length leather boots. His short, straight brown hair was styled in an Ivy League cut. His locks were a little longer on the top, allowing him to spike up his bangs. He was clean-shaven.
“Thank you,” Sophia said.
"Drive safe. Text me and Spencer when you get to Cambridge, okay?" Polly asked Sophia.
"Okay." Sophia said.
Sophia got in her car and drove away.
Polly pulled Liam into a hug. “I’m proud of you, Liam."
"Thank you," Liam said.

Spencer pulled Liam into a hug. "I'm proud of you too."
"Thank you," Liam said.
"Drive safe. Text me and Spencer when you get to Boston, okay?" Polly asked Liam.
"Okay." Liam said.

The Queer King recommends THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARSHA P. JOHNSON (2017) No one knows what really happened to activist and trans pioneer Marsha P. Johnson the night she died. People still trying to understand. Why do you need to see it ? Marsha P. Johnson is an icon and learning about her is learning about Stonewall and our culture.

The Queer King recommends FAGGOTS, Larry Kramer (1978) Fred Lemish, looking for love, gravitates in a New York City full of glory holes, BDSM, orgies and becomes disillusioned along the way. Why do you need to read it ? It’s Kramer’s first novel. It’s ruff. His writing doesn’t shy away from the reality of gay life and he does not take any prisoners alive. A must read.

The Queer King recommends TANGERINE, Sean Baker (2015) On Christmas Eve, Sin-Dee discovers her pimp boyfriend has been cheating on her. With her friend Alexandra, she goes searching for him Why do you need to see it ? Shot on an IPhone for a ridiculous amount of money, this dramedy puts trans women up front with incredible narrative audacity.

The Queer King recommends A LITTLE LIFE, Hanya Yanagihara (2015) Jude, Willem, JB & Malcolm are best friends living in New York City. From college to middle-age, with most focus on Jude, you will learn to care for them like no other fictional characters before. Why do you need to read it ? I can’t stress this enough. This novel is extraordinary. 18 months later, I’m still not over it. It will break your heart.

The Queer King Recommends PLEASE LIKE ME, Josh Thomas (2013–2016) Josh discovers he’s gay, putting a spin in the lives of his girlfriend, his lazy best friend, his newly-wed dad and his depressed mother. Why do you need to see it ? This Australian comedy achieves in tone and heart what Looking never could. And also, there’s Arnold. Oh, Arnold.

Why do you need to see it ? Poignant, full of incredible tunes and an extraordinary performance from writer-director JCM. Sugar Daddy, Bring it Home.

The Queer King Recommends THE PRINCE OF SALT/CAROL, Patricia Highsmith (1952) Young Therese meets Carol, an rich older woman. The “friendship” that will follow will change her life forever. Why do you need to read it ? An unprecedented feat in literature, a lesbian love story in which the protagonists are not punished in the end. The movie adaptation by Todd Haynes is also a must-see.

The Queer King Recommends GIOVANNI’S ROOM, James Baldwin (1956) David, a young american who lived in Paris, remembers his complex relationships with the men in his life, particularly a bartender named Giovanni. Why do you need to read it ? Top-3 greatest gay novel of all-time. The first time I read it, I couldn’t finish it. I read the last 30 pages 4 years later. It’s THAT powerful.

The Queer King recommends THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT, Stephan Elliott (1994) Three drag queens take a road trip across Australia to get to a paid-job. Why do you need to see it ? One of the rare 90s positive representation of LGBT+ people, it’s funny, gorgeous looking. A classic. PS The soundtrack is IN-CRE-DI-BLE.

The Queer King recommends JUST KIDS, Patti Smith (2010) The chronicles of a love story beyond societal restrictions between Patti Smith and revolutionary artist Robert Mapplethorpe. Why do you need to read it ? Aside from the historical accuracy of the 60/70s, you explore what it feels like to really love someone. And Mapplethorpe is a fascinating man. I cried multiple times.

The Queer King recommends THE X PORTOFLIO , Robert Mapplethorpe (1978) A series of photographs that shade a light on homosexual practices (most of them extremes). Why do you need to see it ? A lot of Mapplethorpe’s work is great, but this is beyond. Not for the sensible soul. Hardcore.

That little miracle isn’t shy about sex. ALL kinds of sex. It’s very much like a Robert Altman movie, if Robert Altman shot a lot of oral sex in his career.

The Queer King recommends LESS, Andrew Sean Greer (2018) As his 50th birthday is coming up, writer Andrew Less is traveling around the world to avoid going to his ex’s wedding. Why do you need to read it ? For the exploration of a gay man’s psyché while his youth and opportunities are behind him. As a gay man, it made me sad. Then it gave me hope. Also now, I want a blue suit.

The Queer King recommends THE WAY HE LOOKS, Daniel Ribeiro (2014) Blind high school student Leo meets new classmate Gabriel. He starts developing romantic feelings towards him. Why do you need to see it ? Desires and self-realization are themes very well exploited in this movie. The two main actors are phenomenal. I almost wished I was 16 again (but not really).

The Queer King recommends WHEN WE RISE, Cleve Jones (2016) A complete memoir about the journey of activist Cleve Jones, following into the path of Harvey Milk to keep fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and against the AIDS Epidemic. Why do you need to read it ? An in depth look at life at the fore front of activism, with gorgeous interludes of romance, sex and heartbreaks.

The Queer King recommends KILLING EVE, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (2018-present) MI:5 Eve Polastri’s pursuit of International killer Villanelle. Why do you need to see it ? Because lesbian desires are still mostly unseen on mainstream, award-winning programs. It’s very, very, very good.

The Queer King recommends ZIGGY, STARDUST & ME, James Brandon (2019) 1973. Jonathan meets Web. He’s not supposed to. He needs to change. Sweet Ziggy won’t help him now. Why do you need to read it ? It’s not out until August (but I have a proof copy). It’s not great literature (it’s YA after all) but it did fill my heart with feelings of love and hope. Everything Bowie is good for the soul anyway.

The Queer King recommends PRIDE, Stephen Boresford (2014) 1984, Brittain. A strike is breaking the country apart. Lesbians & Gays decide to give their support to the miners. Why do you need to see it ? Because it’s still rare to see a funny movie about gay people which is not condescending.

The Queer King recommends ANGELS IN AMERICA, Tony Kushner (1991–1993) A complex, metaphorical examination of American life, the AIDS epidemic and homosexuality in the 80s. Why do you need to read it ? The writing is glorious, full with incredible characters. A very sensitive approach of flaws in the human spirit. It’s epic.

A story of death, acceptance and race, Lilting is a delicate piece of filmmaking. And again, Ben Whishaw. Goddamn Ben Whishaw.

The first of its kind — where representation is limitless, it’s an homage to a fabulous and terrible time in LGBTQ+’s life. As I said in a previous article, it’s essential.
