It’s Pride 2023! Time to put up some more comic recs!

This time I’ve put together some stories about discovering one’s own queer identity, outlining a family history of queerness, and several stories where being queer isn’t the focus - queer characters are simply allowed to be.

Belle of the Ball By Mari Costa

Imagine you're from one of humanity's far off colonies in the far future. When your colony first formed people used artifical wombs as an alternative to traditional breeding to bolster numbers, to the point where it became normalized and nobody wanted to go back to sexuak reproduction once the population got back to normal.

As time went on people started being altered to be born sterile, and slowly people started seeing genitals and libido as useless, and started removing them, and then requesting children be born without them. By the time you were born nobody has had sex in your solar system in centuries, everyone has a completely androgynous body, and a mind incapable of sexual attraction.

You never think of bodies as gendered, even though you likely think of yourself as male or female. And nothing ever seems sexual to you. You've cuddled with your freinds, been naked in public, touched people's bodies, and none of it has ever been sexual to you. You and your girlfriend sleep in separate beds, and the most you'll ever do is cuddle eachother. This is just how the world is.

Eventually you interact with humans from another system, and they seem so alien. They hide their bodies in strange ways, have boundaries you don't understand, and have strange concepts about gender and families. They seem to think you're odd as well.

When you become one of the few people from your home city to go off system for a job you find that people interact with you strangely. They always say that they're so sorry for you, that they think it's tragic you've been forced to live the way that you do, or how awful it is that your civilization has robbed "important parts of humanity" from you. You don't understand why reproduction methods are so important to these people. When they try to show you you don't really understand, even if you're happy to learn about your new freinds' cultures. You wish you could just cuddle with people here without it meaning anything though.

You return to your home planet confused. You're not sure if you could explain it all to anyone other then yourself.

Starting with a trifecta of the asexual, aromantic, and aplatonic flags. A real AAA battery of a gal

The lighting/shading of this was so fun in this, a bajillion multiply and overlay layers.

If anyone has any flags that they want to see specifically, let me know. This is my first pride month comfortably IDing as aro and even though I don't personally connect with every arospec micro label, I love learning more about them!

You live on a planet where humans have been forced to have only one biological sex. You're at the edge of human space, and early in colonization you planet was under attack from an outside source, for survival you had to switch to artificial breeding, which is more effective in mammal species if there's only females, as male reproductive cells are easily synthesized.

You're the only humans in the region. Most alien species you interact with just think of humans as a single sexed species that has artifical reproduction. Though you understand that humans used to have two sexes you barely actually interact with that concept. You don't really think of yourself as having a gender identity or anything, you're kind of just a person. The last male human on your planet has been dead for generations.

You first saw a photo of human male in a history class when you were a teenager. He looked so odd to you. He was deep in the uncanny valley, something that felt very familiar to you, something you evolved to interact with, but something so unfamiliar. Illustrations of males, especially outside of academic sources, always play up unfamiliar features to make them into something almost like a fantasy race, but you find something almost charming about the one in the photo.

That photo sticks with you in a weird way. It's kind of scary. Especially the idea of living at a time with actual male female dynamics. The idea of a man being inside you, however that must work, seems so viscerally horrifying to you. You've known people who've had sex before, it's controversial in your society for people to have sex with eachother, but it's legal, but it seems so diffrent then whatever you'd be expected to do with a male human.

Time passes. You end up living your own life. You major in music once you get to college, and end up with a semi successful career as a guitarist in the capital of one of your planet's countries. Things go well for you. You live your life thinking slightly more about men then most people do, but it's never that important to you.

One day there's word that ambassadors from another human planet are visiting. They're from several systems away, and very culturally diffrent. And it's most likely that they'll have men with them. It's strange to think you might actually be able to see one. You think of them as this strange race of monsters, so clearly linked to you but unlike you. Everything people say about men, that they're violent and warlike, that they're superior yet evil, that they're weaker yet more honest and good natured, rushes through your head.

You sign up to be a musician in the welcoming band to the ambassadors. It's scary but you enter. You win, partly because you're local and talented, partly because most other musicians were too afraid.

When the ambassadors from another human planet show up its on one of your city's largest streets, with cheering crowds and flashing lights. You play a song you realize your entire planet is going to hear. Then for the first time in your life, after about two and a half decades of being alive, you see a male human.

The males in the ambassadorial mission are mixed together with normal people. But you can easily spot the males. They're strange looking to you, the way they walk, and speak and move. Though you realize their foreign way of dressing is honestly more alien then anything biological. Despite your expectations, the males look oddly human, they are human, they're just more like you then you'd expect, they look a bit diffrent, but they're honestly just normal people. It's almost anticlimactic.

When everyone is talking to eachother later you're meant to interact with the musicians of their world, most of whom seem to be male. It's so strange to think you're actually talking to someone whose male. You were kind of worried some sort of mating instincts would set in, but after a lifetime of being raised to never expect to have any sexual experiences that involve more then one person, your mind doesn't really go in that direction, even if you did have those instincts.

You end up talking for awhile in your only shared language (a long dead one) to another guitarist. He's male but it's weirdly not a big deal, he's less obviously male then some of the others, and he seems like a nice freindly person. You realize his voice is deep, but it's not distorted in monstrous like you expected it to be. You realize you shouldn't talk about his sex, so you talk about music. You end up really interested in his culture's musical traditions, and kind of ignore his sex. You almost forget he's a man. Since he'll probably have to stay on the planet for at least a few months he tells you he'd like to meet again mabye. He shakes your hand, his skin doesn't feel diffrent then anyone else's, you don't know why you'd expect it not to.

New episode of my podcast, Experiment 31E, is out today!

Episode 4, "Letters," gives more details about what the Scientist left behind in America. We find out more about her family's faithful servant Lydia, and we meet a new character, Lady Carmichael. We also learn that the only thing more terrifying than your friends potentially trying to sabotage your experiment and betray you is the possibility of having to go to a party.

This episode also explores something I've been waiting to introduce--the Scientist's asexuality. I'm ace and I think we need more positive representation in media. Admittedly, a mad scientist trying to resurrect the dead might not be the most positive representation, but hey, it's what I've got. Enjoy!

The Circus Infinite, a Book Review

Books that focus on A-spec (aromantic and/or asexual) characters are hard to find. Thus far, I've read three. These books tend to be indy published and thus recieve very little promotion. I've only found the ones I have by specifically searching. Furthermore, A-spec books by writers of color are even more rare.

Kahn Wong's The Circus Infinite is a science fantasy about Jes, a man with magical powers who escapes an evil research lab and runs away to join the circus. He finds a home but gets tangled up with the local crime boss, who threatens to send him right back to the laboratory.

Kahn Wong has some real strengths when it comes to writing. He is real damn good at making these amazing magical scenes. Dude can create a sense of wonder, which is exactly what you want to feel when you read something called The Circus Infinite. That being said, there's definitely things that can be improved. For a mafia story, I think it needs to be darker and grittier. This book is a little too afraid to really push things. A little too afraid to really test relationships and betray people. It just needs to go harder to really hit the emotional peaks I want to reach as a reader. That being said, I did enjoy the story we got.

This book does something amazing that I've rarely seen before. Jes is, as you probably guessed frim my intro, asexual. He is, however, panromantic (romantically attracted to all genders) and winds up finding love in a man named Bo. They begin dating at the beginning of the book and their relationship grows throughout. Every other A-spec book I've read that has a relationship in it doesn't have the main couple getting together until the end. And I think there's value in that, I do, but it is actually really helpful as an ace person myself to see fictional examples of us actually being in relationships. It helps us find ways to explain ourselves and make sense of our own relationships. In my entire 28 years of enjoying fiction the only other time I've seen this is in Bojack Horseman. This is why you should read diversely, folks!

As mentioned, the book has some things that should've been workshopped a bit. I felt the first chapter was a little rougher than it should've been. But I am glad that I read it. I also feel that Kahn Wong has a lot of potential as a writer. This was his very first book, published in 2022. If and when he writes a second, I will absolutely read it.
