“It comes through the written and the spoken word; sometimes a word, sometimes a word, a sentence or a poem or a story, is so resonant, so right, it causes us to remember, at least for an instant, what substance we are really made from, and where is our true home.”

QTOD: What's your favorite pirate / sea / beach read? I don't think I've read too many pirate books - the only one I can really remember reading is Daughter of the Pirate King so it wins by default (it's a well-deserved win, regardless). I've heard The Girl from Everywhere is also a good read, but despite owning it for the last few years, I still haven't gotten around to reading it. I feel like my June posts are having this accidental theme of "books I've had for years but still have not read". 😅 To be fair to my past self, most of these books are part of series that I don't have full access to at the moment. As someone who likes to binge read series, I like having all the books on hand before I start reading the first book. There are few things more annoying than reading a book and then having to scramble to find a copy of the sequel asap. Or at least, that's the excuse I've been using. My library is about to fully reopen so I don't know how much longer I can hide behind that reasoning. Do you like to binge-read series? — [Image description: A book, The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig, open to its title page. And no one can ever change that about me
I think what the Nerdfighter community, Hank, and John mean to me can be perfectly summed up in John’s video about seeing one of the Harry Potter movies, when he talked about why he loved being a nerd: “...because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff... Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.” I love being a nerd and being allowed to express my emotions when it comes to things I enjoy: it’s what makes me me. And no one can ever change that about me, so accepting it seems like the best way to go.
I also appreciate how John can take such simple words and create them into some of the most beautiful prose I have ever read. Whenever I read one of his books, it seems like he has taken my exact thoughts and put them down on paper for me to enjoy whenever I want to hear myself think through someone else’s voice. It makes the reading experience that much more real, and I’m more likely to walk around in a stupor for at least a week afterward so I can comprehend how John Green was able to construct my mind into a novel.

Reading The Books I Collect
Reading The Books I Collect
One of the things I do is collect books. We’re talking lots of books. Thick books, skinny books, hard cover, soft cover, really, really old books and just-published best sellers.  Books. Lots and lots of books. I collect them. Note, I haven’t read them all. In fact, there are hundreds of books on my shelves I haven’t read yet. For example, I have 56 Hardy Boys and 50-something Tom Swift Jr…
