i befriended an aroace person irl and now it feels like life is actually worth living :)
i currently have a boyfriend whom i Desperately need to break up with. i hesitated before because none of the people i talked to about my feelings could understand exactly what was going on so i thought i had to work it through somehow. make it work. like something was wrong with me personally.
now this friend who was previously introduced to me as “straight, but culturally gay” is aroace actually - yet another instance of even well meaning queer friends erasing us 🤷. i talked to her about what’s going on with me and everything clicked. the discomfort. the misalignment of “values”. the way i never see myself in media. i was desperately trying to fit into this “girlfriend” role, to have a chance at a “normal life” but i kept failing at romance and at sex and at performing heterowomanhood (or any womanhood) and it was making me resent myself. oh how easily it comes to “normal people” but not me, of course. i thought for a hot second that im gonna be miserable forever. friends would find partners, maybe move away, maybe have children etc. and im just gonna be stuck. but the existential of this one person who gets this part of me gave me peace.
even if i don’t end up living my ideal aroace life (where i’d have an aroace life partner and we’d just work, play video games together, maybe have a cat + i’d work with children since in our country it would be sus to have any of my own with this living arrangement) with her, at least i know i have her in my corner
i'm glad you've found someone who understand you! having aroace friends is a great feeling!

fun fact (not fun at all fact actually) :
aromanticism and asexuality are still treated as issues to be fixed in most therapy settings, at least in the western psychiatric institution. i cannot fucking mention my aromanticism or asexuality to a therapist or it’ll immediately become their primary concern and goal to fix. whether or not i have a partner/am trying to have a partner is actively being used as an indicator of my wellness, regardless of if i WANT one. i cannot have access to needed mental health ressources because of fear of conversion therapy. aro and/or ace conversion therapy is the norm in most psychiatric institutions and we are getting told by the rest of the queer community that our oppression isnt real and that there is no link between our struggles and theirs.

image embedded in tweet is a full bin labeled "Free Condoms, Be Safe Today!", with the aro flag on both the label and each of the condom packets, next to a full bin labeled "Free Water Balloons, Have Fun Today!", doing the same thing with the ace flag.

hey. do whatever you want btw. it’s your identity. kiss people for fun. enjoy sex. nobody’s stopping you. being aro and/or ace doesn’t mean you have to be repulsed by romantic or sexual activities if you don’t want to.
and also! things only mean what you meant them to mean. you can have platonic sex and platonically make out with your friends. it’s true. just be sure to communicate so that everyone involved understands and you’re good.
