maybe a slightly unpopular/in the minority opinion but i think that if kaz and inej were to get married in the future, inej would take kaz's (real) last name. and now hear me out—
kerch is a seemingly considerably religious and conservative country, even if for just the reasons of profit and gain. but regardless, things like marriage are probably pretty by the book and in order to make a marriage legal, i would assume that it would require the tradition of a wife taking her husband's last name
of course kaz wouldn't like the idea of inej taking his last name because it implies a certain sense of ownership, especially in a country like kerch, but their relationship is not even remotely based on that at all, so inej would talk him down and say she would be honored to take his last name—his real last name—because that is a piece of him that no one else (except for maybe jesper and wylan, should he decide to tell them) gets. in a way, it is a shared last name and not just kaz's because he chose brekker and made that name his persona, versus becoming rietveld again with inej's help and love
of course, that doesn't mean that inej would suddenly use rietveld as her last name. after all, "she was not a lynx or a spider or even the wraith. she was inej ghafa." she would simply be taking rietveld as a legal necessity that is only used for official documentation, and because it signifies the progress she and the man she loves have made both individually and as a couple
so anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk. this is a hill i will absolutely die on (although honestly, not to negate this entire post, but imo kaz and inej wouldn't get married, unless in a suli ceremony. but that is a whole other post)

3L!Scar: ...
Grian: So ... Are you the ghost of life series future? Why... why have you taken the form of Scar...my Scar? You know how it makes me feel don't you.
*3rd Life Scar nods*
Grian: Of course you do ... Well don't you even try I am not going back... I don't deserve to.
3L!Scar: *sigh* Follow me... please?
Grian: You know I can't say no to Scars face... where are we going?
~~~~
*sound of thunder*
Grian: It's going to rain very soon I hope wherever we are going is covered.
3L!Scar: It isn't but the rain won't hit us.
Grian: What do y- the desert... you are leading me to the desert...
3L!Scar: Where else would I lead you to.
~~~~~
Grian: So here we are... the cactus ring... is this our stop?
*3L Scar nods slowly*
Grian: So here we are then... say your piece and- why are you just looking at me?
3L!Scar: Why do you think you deserve to suffer?
Grian: uhhhh- what?!?... It's because I hurt everyone around me, no matter what I do.
3L!Scar: You are so sure of that.
Grian: Of course I am! It's the truth.
3L!Scar: Is it? Well I disagree... you were put in a difficult situation and you had to do what you didn't want to do... I think you made some peoples life better.
Grian: Who in the worlds life did I improve? Tell me.
3L!Scar: Scars life first of all.
Grian: I killed him 3 times! I lead the creeper to him! I didn't cover the ravine! I beat him to death.
3L!Scar: The first was a prank that ended badly, the second an accident and the third you were forced into, but I am certain that he doesn't blame you for it... I am certain he considers you the best thing about this place.
Grian: How can you be so certain of this??
3L!Scar: I have my ways (he is litterally the person he is talking about lmao).
Grian: ... *Sigh*
3L!Scar: You still don't think you deserve to be happy...
Grian: I don't...
3L!Scar: So you want to waste the win? If you really care about m-Scar... Then make the most of the win he gave you.
Grian: What?!?
3L!Scar: The Grian I know was in a terrible situation, stuck to the first red life and with so little allies and yet he persevered and got a win... so now you have a chance for a new start, new friendship, even a new base... Don't trow it all away for this... You deserve it after all you have been trough.
Grian: But...but I-
3L!Scar: Scar gave up for you, so make the most of his sacrifice. If not for yourself then do it for m- him... please.
Grian: You don't look like my Scar...
3L!Scar:... What do you-
Grian: You ARE my Scar...aren't you? Please tell me I am not imagining it.
3L!Scar: How did you-... Yes I am. *Takes off hood* I missed you Grian.
*Grian hugs Scar*
Grian: It was the tone, I don't think even the greatest spirit could clone you so perfectly...
3L!Scar: Guess I am really special then!
Grian: So ... You really don't hate me?
3L!Scar: I could never hate you Grian, never in a 1000 years.
~~~~~
Grian:... So...why are you the ghost of Life series future? How did that even happen?
3L!Scar: It's a long story Grian don't worry about it. (Why is he continuing the ruse even when Grian knows who he is? He prefers that Grian thinks he became the ghost of life series future over Grian knowing he's a watcher)
Grian:... I think I am ready to go back now... Will you come with me?
3L!Scar: Of course! It's my pleasure!
~~~~
Grian: So ... Now what? Is this a goodbye?
3L!Scar:... It doesn't have to be...
Grian: Does that mean... can you stay here with me in the winner v-
3L!Scar: No ... I have... future ghost buisness... I can't... But I can come visit every once in a while?
Grian: ... Last hug before you leave?
3L!Scar: Of course.
*They hug again*
Grian: I missed you so much.
3L!Scar: me too... Well... It's time to go now...It's a see you soon then!
Grian: See you soon Scar.
~~~~~
DL!Scott: Really Scar? Even after he discovered your identity you still kept the lie going? Why did you do that?!?
3L!Scar: I didn't want him to know I was a watcher! I just convinced him that I became the ghost of Life series future.
DL!Scott: And he believed it, which is even more idiotic.
3L!Scar: ... It doesn't have to be a lie ..
SL!Jimmy: Scar... what does that mean Scar... why are you summoning the Watchers Scar?!?!!?
3L!Scar: Hiiiiii fellow Watchers! How are you doing? Today? Or tonight? Looking splendid today I must say-
👁️What do you require Scar?👁️
3L!Scar: Could you...uhhh give me the title of ghost of Life series future? You don't need to give me extra powers, just the title!
👁️Hmmm... on one condition... we do need help with dealing with a situation we are way to busy to resolve ourselves... if you agree to resolve it for us we'll give you that title.👁️
3L!Scar: Yes! That's perfect!
👁️Then the deal is done👁️
DL!Scott: Did you just ... Accept a job you don't know anything about just so the lie you told Grian isn't actually a lie? Are you serious?
3L!Scar:... Yes?
DL!Scott: I can't with you... Do you realize how stupid that was? Agghh. I am going somewhere else now or I might get a migraine.
SL!Jimmy: I'll go with him... Good luck with the Watchers and their assignement.
some stuff i read and watched in december:
the buccanneers: never really hit the heights i wanted it to and most of the cast was not great! but kristine froseth is always watchable and kate winslet's daughter is darling, most importantly scotland doubling for cornwall was beaut. as ever god bless apple for spending money on nonsense
slow horses (s3): i don't know when river cartwright became my shit friend i'm unreasonably fond of but here we are! jack lowden v funny this season and i don't think it's just because i've decided he should be lymond in the billion dollar apple tv series that isn't happening and probably shouldn't bc who else is even blonde (harris dickinson?? i haven't seen the iron claw yet)
monarch: legacy of monsters: i started this and then due to my bad personality decided i had to watch all of the ~monsterverse for context, therefore godzilla december. strong threesome energy in the flashbacks, can't argue with wyatt and kurt russell playing the same character decades apart etc, love a disaster lesbian in crisis etc
~monsterverse interlude: most of these were silly, godzilla: king of the monsters was actively bad, godzilla vs. kong somehow my favourite due to the askars/rebecca hall (long beloved) combo plus all the neon. hollow earth let's go baby!
tokyo godfathers: loved this! love miracles in the city during the holiday season, love to listen to three different podcasts talking about the nuances of trans rep in subtitle translation etc
godzilla minus one: godzilla december! this one made me cryyy, the godzilla theme goes so unbelievably hard, cutest sweetest baby in the world, was incredibly happy to be emotionally manipulated by the endings etc
not going to get into all the christmas film rewatches but: coward's edit of the family stone (repeat the sounding joy!), crying at both little women 94 and little women 19 as per, moonstruck forever, bridget jones' diary colin firth the most sexually appealing colin firth 2 me etc
the wind rises: catching up with miyazaki before the boy and the heron and straight into my ghibli top 3, the love story stuff absolutely floored me
how to have sex: absolutely devastating god
the boy and the heron: very weird and beautiful and sad - saw the dub (robert pattinson you wonderful freak), seeing again with subs this week
jon krakauer, into thin air: a personal account of the everest disaster: i got about halfway through the first chapter and had to stop and ask my dad what the hell he was up to trekking to base camp on his own in the seventies. gripping, chilling, tragic
rose lerner, sailor's delight: rose lerner one of my favourite romance authors (true pretenses i love you forever etc), m/m age of sail romance set around the jewish high holidays with SO much longing and yearning my god
lizzie huxley-jones, make you mine this christmas: fun christmas romance - fake dating but she falls in love with the guy's sister! - that made me burst into tears like five pages in for reasons entirely unrelated to romance or christmas. a 2024 project for soph etc
barbra streisand, my name is barbra: did the audio version so even sped up i reckon i spent at least a full day and a half with barbra. as ever the parts about making things and artistic choices were the best parts, i respect her energy re: including every nice letter or compliment she ever received (my version of this would be reproducing nice ao3 comments etc). wild to me that she spent like 3 decades beefing with larry kramer trying to adapt the normal heart (with bradley cooper at one point lol) but i have to disagree with her impulse to tone down the gay sex to avoid alienating straight people!!
i am not here really but i was proud i managed to keep these little roundups going through the year so. happy new year friends
you will probably murder me in a painful way for saying this (based on the anger you leashed out in the previous asks) but saw 1 should be a stand alone film all along. even leigh&james who wrote the first 3 films think like this because theyre not involved in making the rest 7(?) films.
im not sure what u mean by anger in the last one? i think i kind of just answered their question about the screenplay as thoroughly as i could. who knows im a know-it-all whos dogshit with tone so its entirely possible. the first, sure i see it. i think its p obvious by my acc that im passionate about saw lol. i could see the whole 'the idea of disagreeing w this statement is insane' or 'i have eyes' are a bit rude! but also consider, i exaggerate to prove a point and be a little silly. a little joke, even.
honestly im not sure why im being asked these questions? dont get me wrong, i definitely enjoy them. clearly, given how long my responses are. im not an authority on saw, but i AM someone who thinks hes right abt everything so i do have a lot of things to say about it. i never claimed to be polite or personable, which is why i tend not to post my opinions unprompted. not everyone agrees with me and i have some pretty controversial opinions but different opinions rarely bother me. though, mark x amanda is just kind of strange?
i know a few ppl who agree that the mark saga was not... the best. and people are upset that leighs wishes were ignored in order to continue making sequels. i know he wasnt too happy abt the extra tape and stuff, which makes sense bc this is their franchise, but if they were not happy with it... im not sure why they bankrolled the rest? theyre producers on all of them after the first iirc. leigh might not like hoffman, his bastard child, but he seems content with us enjoying it so thats fine by me. if they truly hated it, i dont think theyd attach their names to it. that just looks like an endorsement. i think theyre just content with us enjoying it, leighs never seen them and probably never will but that doesnt mean he thinks we shouldnt see them either
i think a lot of horror would benefit if people were able to do things like this with franchises after people are done with them. theyre not always for everyone but i think a lot of people are fond of horror sequels. theyre just kind of a genre staple and i like what the rest of the films contributed to the lore. imagine if every horror franchise had a more open patent, like great gatsby? i think itd allow for more creativity. horror as a genre has so much world building bc it has to justify sooo much suspension of disbelief which means theres usually a lot to work with! imagine michael myers as a free character. id love to see what other writers think of his whole "fear personified" thing. if we allow more leeway with horror and less criticism at its imperfection, i think ppld enjoy it more. theyre cunt, theyre camp, and theyre fun and i consider myself a guy who likes fun
my favorite saw film when i first got into it was saw v for about a month and a half. its basically been a year since then and i would sacrifice the other films in a heartbeat for saw 2004, but i think theyre neat
I made my comment about Olivia being shady and I don't consider anything I said misogyny. I think that phrase "The first impression is what counts!" is me about Olivia, because of since several events that are mentioned here many times and then you say "I get it!".
Hasn't it already been mentioned here that Jacob made Elvis to reach Kaia in some way and you didn't disagree, why we can't have that opinion about Olivia too? He was cast at the end of last year and the rest of the cast seems recently, coincidence or not, I repeat, for me she is shady in everything
I made a point based on your post which is public, I think the things she does i will side eye and you don't, we will always disagree on that but I know I'm not the only person who thinks that, and I know, sometimes hate makes you blind and not think straight, but she is yet to change my opinion about her
because jacob playing elvis, a specific role austin had, and an australian being in an australian ensemble series with other australian actors are not remotely the same thing…at all? literally at all? you can of course think whatever you what, but i can think acting like those are the same thing is ridiculous. 😅 esp when it’s not like olivia heard of jacob yesterday and they’ve been in the same young australian hollywood friend group since pre: elvis. i’m honestly surprised they weren’t cast in something together sooner with how much crossover there is in that bubble. olivia herself has talked about it before and said they all gravitate to each other no matter what city they’re in because of the inherent familiarity, and luke bracey said something to the same effect too though he’s not ‘in’ that group bc he’s not as young as them. he said when he was filming one true loves that he had the young aussie in the cast move in with him during filming bc he knew what it was like to get your first role away from australia, which i found very sweet. my sweet lukey…oops sorry i got so sidetracked LOL. me and my emotional support australians against the world 🙏🏼
i think your dislike of her in general is making you a little irrational here lol and i say that as gently as possible because we all have people we’re like that with. i’m like that with v and will be the first to say i no longer assume good faith in anything related to her haha. c’est la vie, that’s life on the internet! a couple weeks ago i got irked bc a necklace she was wearing in her story looked similar to the a24 priscilla locket and my first thought was that that was on purpose lolll. i appreciate that if nothing else you’re always civil with me, and feel the need to clarify that i wasn’t trying to single you out as being a misogynist. was speaking generally, and i have gotten some anons from not-you that have been much harsher that i just auto deleted.
back in theory (and maybe practice)
Reflections from HPC (part 1):
- “We are good at fixing fish.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJEwC4wCM70&ab_channel=TED -- I learned in undergrad that this was the “way” of public health but now this is starting to seem a bit obsolete. Not that public health programs around teaching people how to cook healthy and get exercise are always harmful but after having worked in public health and seen what the real issues are, it almost seems a little demeaning to assume people don’t know these things or haven’t already thought to try. And yes we can target behaviors and what not but... that’s still trying to fix fish, that’s not going to fix the water. What’s going to fix the water is a whole fucking revolution but what do we do in the meantime?
- Listening to your body, your first language - how Abigail put it. We have been conditioned to deny what we feel in our bodies in so many ways and when we listen to our bodies, we are returning to how things are supposed to be. And to use Abigail’s words, it truly is “liberating” to get in touch with what the body is experiencing and say it out loud and not have to shoo it away. And then process in a radically honest way with a group that has your best interests in mind... anti-capitalism am i right
- how we have a whole working group dedicated to de-centering weight and moving away from BMI, but enrollment into the programs is literally based on BMI... so what to do about this paradox?
- the “coding” of racism in education as the achievement gap, in housing as housing discrimination, in child welfare as “disproportionality”... like these are literally the terms that I was taught and now that I look at it from ten feet back I’m like... bro... wtf... just call it what it is...
- I feel like I’ve been in so many spaces at this point where we talk social justice in what’s inevitably a deeply political and personal way, and I know how this works, but I think it’s so easy to get sucked into things that you’re expected to agree with because you’re being “taught” the right way to think but I’m realizing this time around that I am allowed to disagree and form my own opinions, whether I want to say it or not. I also know how this gets super theoretical and as much as I vibe with radical theories, I’m a practical personal at the end of the day so this has always been a point of frustration for me.
- “culture eats strategy for breakfast” - this one is real real
- “calling people in”.... hmm... obviously I get the intent but not super sure about this one
- “The doors to the world of the wild self are few but precious. If you have a deep scar, that is a door. If you have an old, old story, that is a door. If you love the sky and the water so much you almost cannot bear it, that is a door. If you yearn for a deeper life, a full life, a sane life, that is a door.” - Clarissa Pinkola Estes
- so where is my place? what should i do? there are always the contradictions right? how can I be part of this movement in a way that actually feels authentic and good?
Greek Mythology Book Adaptation Reviews
I'm going to review some Greek mythology adaptations I've read to either recommend the ones I enjoyed or warn you which to steer clear of.
Tumblr media
But first, a quick word on accuracy. Most of these are going to have issues with the accuracy of character portrayals and or the story. It's unfortunately inherent to this genre. I enjoy Greek mythology and homer because the characters are flawed and complex. So, I don't know if authors make the changes they do because they think modern audiences want a cleaner cut good guys/protagonist vs bad guys/antagonist dynamic or what. Ultimately, I do think it does the characters a disservice to try and sort the characters into “good guy” and “bad guy” boxes. So, I will point out major inaccuracies, especially with Trojan War surrounding books bc while there are multiple versions of many Greek myths, the trojan war has most of the action solidified by homer, and you can then decide if it's worth reading. A lot of what I like about these books will come down to writing style. We all know these stories and how they go, so it’s up to the author to write them in a way that is worth reading. Some of these books I vehemently disliked and some of them I love. This is mostly to just share my experiences with everyone. I know when I was looking into Greek mythology based works these were recommended as if they were all equal but in reading them that is definitely not the case.
Books discussed under the cut: Ariadne, Helen of Troy, Troy (by Stephen Fry), The Song of Kings, The Song of Achilles, Circe, Lore Olympus, The Penelopiad, and Ransom.
(Quick disclaimer: All opinions are my own, you don’t have to agree with me, feel free to share your opinions in the comments, the point is to generate discussion and help people pick books they might enjoy, but also remember I am a person with feelings, so if you disagree with me just don’t be rude about it)
1. Ariadne by Jennifer Saint
Personally, I enjoyed this book. I thought it was simply going to cover the slaying of the Minotaur and end with maybe Dionysus finding Ariadne on Naxos, kind of a happily ever after ending there since this is how the myth was presented to me. Instead it incorporates all myths surrounding Ariadne, including her sister Phaedra. The point of view switches in between them. Theseus is not presented super favorably in this book, but honestly given all his myths I’m not surprised. Gods are not shown to be sympathetic to humans either, which I also don’t think is a surprising take given the contents of Greek mythology. However, one plot point does really bug me. Slight spoilers but Ariadne finds out the cult of Dionysus is participating in animal sacrifice and is horrified, which given how common animal sacrifice is for the time period this take place in, doesn’t make a lot of sense. I think being horrified by animal sacrifice is too much of a modern point of view. There is also a slight theme of women constantly being oppressed by men, and the women do nothing wrong. Given Phaedra’s story this doesn’t make a lot of sense and ultimately dulls the complexity of the characters. Still, I ultimately liked it.
2. Circe by Madeline Miller
If I were to rank all the books on this list, Circe would be my favorite. For a book about a character who lives most of her life exiled on an island, Miller pulls together every potential relation or myth that could be tied to Circe together in this book. I adore the way the gods are described, especially the underwater gods are super inhuman looking/sounding. It’s a breath of fresh air, I get tired of the gods that just look like hot humans in white robes real quick. Like, Ariadne the gods are not shown to be sympathetic to humans, whereas Circe is based on how she grew up being treated. This is basically the theme of the book, finding yourself and where you fit in in the world.
 Pasiphae, Circe’s sister, has characterization that is a direct contradiction to how she is presented in Ariadne, but I like Miller’s version better. She’s a bitch but at least she has agency as opposed to being “sad woman who is oppressed under men”. Odysseus is presented so well in this book, she captures all his good traits (the reasons we love him) and his bad ones (reasons why we know we shouldn’t like him) so well, great handling of a complex character. Also the writing style is gorgeous. I can’t recommend this book enough. (I’m sorry this is so short, I’m really good at describing what I don’t like in books as opposed to what I do like, but I freaking love this book. Seriously.)
3. Helen of Troy by Margaret George
I first read this book 4-5 years ago and really liked it. So, while on my Greek mythology kick I reread it thinking I would enjoy it. This really wasn’t the case. I think the main reason being I finally read the actual Iliad before reading this, so I noticed all the inaccuracies and they really bothered me. This book presents Helen’s abduction as a choice she made after falling in love with Paris. I will give the author kudos for not portraying Menelaus as abusive like in the movie Troy or the 2018 tv show Troy. Instead Helen slights Aphrodite so Aphrodite makes Helen and Menelaus’s marriage passionless. So, when Paris shows up Aphrodite once again decides to fuck with Helen by making her super in love and finally horny for a man. Despite the relationship being forced, the book carries through that Helen and Paris actually loved each other throughout the whole book, which since the relationship has so little foundation to stand on it is pretty bland. George also goes with the “good guys” “bad guys” approach and consequently twists a lot of characters and events to try and absolve Helen and Paris so that “they did nothing wrong”. To do this so much has to be changed and ultimately they still aren’t likeable.  For example, George has Helen ask her daughter Hermione if she wants to leave but Hermione says no so she leaves her. She tries to show her being sad about it but repeatedly does everything she can to absolve her of having been in the wrong. Same with stealing from Sparta’s treasury, Priam lying to the Greeks about Helen being with them, or Paris killing his son. If you like any of the characters on the Greek side you probably won’t like their portrayals. Everyone else has to be in the wrong so that Paris and Helen aren’t. Also I don’t know if this is accurate but Helen is in her late 20s, early 30s when she meets Paris and Paris is 16 :/. I know times were different in 1200 BCE but a modern author still chose to keep these ages and represent Paris, a teenager, as super sexy and like an adult. My last major gripe with this book has to do with dramatic irony. Ariadne, Circe, The Song of Achilles, all use dramatic irony throughout there story. This was common in Greek plays because the audience knows the story and knows what’s going to happen, so they foreshadow the events through the characters, who are oblivious to their doomed fate. In the books I mentioned above this is done really well, however this book attempts to do that and falls flat on it’s face. George has Helen bestowed with the gift of prophecy and she just randomly blurts out her famous lines from the Iliad at random times. And every freakin time she is so confused, like “huh wow that was dark”. Some of Helen’s best lines are completely wasted. And every time Helen gets a vision of Troy on fire she just writes it off as not possible. It’s ultimately a very frustrating adaptation.
4. Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe
So, while I enjoy Lore Olympus, I got to be honest with you, it’s the junk food of this list. While Circe and Ransom are very literary and works of art, this is a comic that’s main claim to fame is that it’s entertaining. It’s not super deep and thought-provoking like the others on this list. It’s currently available for free on Webtoon, updates every Sunday (or if you are like me, Saturday evening) but is coming into print sometime in October/November (there’s some sort of printed book shortage going round, as of Sept 2021, I don’t know all the details but LO had it’s release date pushed back, likely for this reason) so obviously a lot of people like it. LO is also supposed to be getting an animated TV show, or so I’ve heard.
The main plot has to do with the romance between Persephone and Hades, it’s a very “will they, won’t they” dynamic. Up until “season 2″ most of the plot was similar to that of a teenage or young adult TV drama. However the series is very addicting because Smythe ends each installment on a cliffhanger, when I read this I basically ended up spending my whole weekend nonstop reading. My favorite thing about the series is how funny it is. Lots of the humor is very similar to Scott Pilgrim, both the comic and the movie. The way I was introduced to Greek Mythology was through the Percy Jackson series, so I always have a soft-spot for funny adaptations. Lots of crazy-ass shit happens in Greek mythology that can be hard to take seriously.
What I don’t like about LO has a lot to do with art-style and diversity. The body types are HEAVILY gendered. Like, all the men are built like a brick wall, 7 ft tall, 8-pack. While the women are TINY with huge tits and ass. And this design appears over and over and over again. It gets tiring, and it’s frankly unimaginative. I also don’t see lots of diversity in the way the characters are presented. Yes, they are the colors of the rainbow but you can make supernatural characters BIPOC-coded, look at Steven Universe. Both Garnet and Bismuth are red and purple but they are very obviously both black. Same goes for LGBTQ characters. Greek mythology itself features a lot of gay relationships. However, LO has so far only confirmed that Athena/Hestia are dating, no other characters, have been shown to be gay or of the many relationships shown in depth, no aspect of their relationship has been shown, just confirmed. What I also don’t like is that, since she is a wlw, Athena is simply designed the same way all the men are, tall broad shouldered, small hips. It’s almost like Smythe saying, “This is the “man” in the relationship.” I wouldn’t be so bitchy about it if this weren’t the only female body with deviation. Hestia is also the only non-background character to be drawn fat, and she still has a distinct hourglass shape, so it’s easy to miss she is the only non-skinny representation. Basically, the diversity is crumbs.
I’m not saying Lore Olympus is bad or you are bad for liking it, I still like it. I just don’t have high expectations for it either.
5. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
When read this book, I was thinking it was going to be a lot like Circe, a whole life epic of Penelope. It’s not really like that, it’s a very short literary piece of work. It is told from the perspective of Penelope in Asphodel, she is giving an abbreviated version of her life history. However, the book switched often to one part of the The Odyssey that stands out to Atwood, which is Odysseus killing the handmaidens. This is a more feminist point, that the handmaidens did nothing wrong, they only interacted with the suitors and yet Odysseus killed them. I think it makes a good point of faithfulness, this is a trait of Penelope’s that is really emphasized in her story, waiting 20 years for her husband, while everyone knows he wasn’t faithful to her. But if she had done the same he would’ve punished her. So by highlighting this point in the story, Atwood points out the unusually high expectations women face. I do like this book, Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite authors, but Penelope does use modern language, according to the story because she’s picked it up wandering Asphodel, but that wasn’t my favorite choice. Also, Helen. Helen is portrayed as the whore who started the war because she loves eating men and men dying for her. Kind of a derivative take that is weird in contrast to the rest of the theme of the book. Finally, the story does say that instead of staying in Asphodel that shades like Helen and Odysseus can choose to be reborn, and that they’ve lived in the world hundreds of times. This was a cool nod to how universal these characters are, a hero with a thousand faces style.
6. The Song of Achilles by Margret Miller
I feel like this one is a bit controversial. It’s going depend heavily on what you are looing for in a book. So let me start off by addressing the bad, which is the characterization. This book is a lot like Helen of Troy, in that it tries to box characters into “good guys” and “bad guys”. There is some more nuanced characterization compared to Helen, it simplifies some dynamics to fit the modern audience. It’s the story of Patroclus and Achilles, from a young age until their death, mostly focusing on their romance. This romance is made monogamous in this book, even though it wasn’t in the Iliad and other works. So the relationship with those two and Briseis and Deidamia were changed heavily to fit this, often at the expense of the women and their characterization. Agamemnon is another character who gets a pretty flat take, shown as only an antagonist throughout. Finally, Patroclus, the main character is a big one, in the Iliad Patroclus is one of the best warriors on the Greek side. In this book, he doesn’t fight. He rejects combat and is shown as only tending to the wounded. And while tending to the wounded is something Patroclus did, it is obviously a very modern anti-war take. A lot of Iliad adaptations try and make it clear they are very anti-war, as if the original Iliad wasn’t anti-war in itself (seriously, go read/reread it, the way Homer invokes carnage is not heroic). nd ultimately the ancient Greeks had very different views on heroism and honor that Miller chose not to portray. To the Achaeans, what would be more heroic than to fight beside your loved one? It makes the pivotal moment, Patroclus putting on Achilles armor and pretending to be him, an extremely dumb move, an obvious death sentence. Instead of what it was, a trusting of equals (still maybe dumb but not a death sentence). I also do think people are a little hard on this book, a common criticism is that the characters are one dimensional. I don’t think they are at all, the are simply all told from Patroclus’s perspective, so it’s only as he saw them.
However, despite all that I do really like this book, a lot of it comes down to the writing style. I said before in the review for Circe how much I love Miller’s style. The same can be said for this book. It’s no wonder quotes from this book are all over tumblr. It’s really beautifully written. Heavy use dramatic irony and it's done so well. The romance is superb, it feels star-cross, soulmates, cataclysmic. The scenes detailing Achilles grief hit me so hard, and the scene with Achilles and Priam is amazing. It’s not for everyone, but personally I love this book.
7. The Song of Kings by Barry Unsworth
I’m going to be quick about this one because I hated it and I tend to go on about things I don’t like but this book is not worth the time. I looked up “Greek mythology /Iliad adaptation novels” and this was recommended to me on some article. It had good reviews so I went for it. This book was basically written as metaphor for the gulf war, which the author did not support. I don’t support war either but this book, which is supposed to be a retelling of Iphigenia at Aulis, basically destroys the characters to get it’s anti-war message. If you like anyone on the Greek side, you will not like this book, they are all portrayed as greedy, blood hungry, idiots. Unless you really like Calachas for some reason. I could go for pages on everything that’s wrong but I won’t. Basically, if you like the Iliad you won’t like this book because it’s not really concerned with the Iliad so much as it’s own message.
8. Ransom by David Malouf
This novel recounts one of the best parts of the Trojan War, the meeting of Achilles and Priam. In the Iliad it sends such a powerful message about what it means to be human and to grieve. Both Priam and Achilles are like gods, one a king the other a hero, and they choose to set aside their differences and behave like men. It ends the epic poem with a story of compassion.
And this book's retelling of that scene... meh. It seems like it's more about Priam experiencing life outside of being a king, the middle of the book has a huge emphasis on how little he knows about daily life and even his sons. Even when he meets Achilles, what should have been a great scene, he focus on how good it is of him to do this, not how much he loves his son, which should be the point. The whole book focuses on how by doing this act and humbling himself he is a hero, but it's not very humble to keep congratulating himself for doing it. No thoughts are on Hector, who in the Iliad was his favorite son. Honestly if Hector's shade could read Priam's mind, I think he'd be pissed with how much the old man only thinks of himself and his legacy, not his son.
And what convinces Achilles is Priam asking Achilles if he would do the same for his son and vice versa and Achilles spend a lot of time contemplating his own death like he'd never thought of it, which just doesn't make sense. Achilles knew when he sailed to Troy there was a prophecy that he wouldn't return, and multiple times ppl (and a horse) describe his death in exact detail and everytime he just goes "Tell me something I don't know". Death doesn't bother Achilles, but his legacy does and it seems so weird the author missed that.
The best part of this book is the beginning, while Achilles is mourning Patroclus it goes over their history. It's not super explicit about the nature of their relationship but it's written beautifully, the intensity of their love and consequently Achilles's grief is there.
9. Troy by Stephen Fry
First off,  I got the hard cover edition and this book is so beautiful. It has think pages with color printed art from various era's that depict the myths being told. I dog ear books to keep my place and when I opened this book I considered not dog earing it bc of how nice it is (I ended up doing it anyways though, it's my book).
This book is so comprehensive, it includes a lot of background on the myths and lineage surrounding the main characters in the Trojan war. It mentions myths that are usually less common. I grew up reading a lot of greek myth collections and obviously some get repeated over and over while some you might only see mentioned once or twice. Well Fry doesn't let a single story pass you by, he tells them bc he loves them. It's not until close exactly half-way through the books the Greeks make it Troy and the actual war starts. Which I don't mind at all, the stories surrounding the buildup are as good as the war itself.
Like most myths, there are at time contradictory stories, other lineages and such that the author must choose one over the other. Fry includes a lot of other interpretations in the footnotes of the book. Some greek mythology fans can get angry at adaptations that don't do their favorite interpretation so I think it was a good way to keep those people at bay and show how comprehensive his knowledge on the subject is.
Fry uses dramatic irony from time to time which I love in mythology retelling, foreshadowing disastrous events yet to come through casual remarks made by the characters.
 I love the pronunciation guides in the footnotes. I grew up loving greek mythology but since I grew up reading it all I never knew how to pronounce anything.
The only thing that I found slightly disappointing is some minor events from the Iliad are left out, such as Posiden fighting with the Greeks or Hera seducing her husband to distract him so the Greeks could get the upper hand. They are mostly unimportant, but they are funny, and this book often searches for humor whenever it could, so it would've been fun to include them. Fry's description of events are also a little more technical. You don't get a lot of the big emotions other books on this list give.
Overall this book was amazing, I spent most of one weekend reading it, I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to get my hands on the other two books, Mythos and Heroes. And I hope Stephen Fry doesn't end here but goes on to tell stories of two heroes leaving Troy which make up the Odyssey and Aeneid.
_______
If you have any recommendations, I'd be glad to take them! I already have The Silence of the Girls and The Trojan Women by Pat Barker, A Thousand Ships and Pandora's Box by Natalie Hayes, any books by Mary Renault, Kassandra by Krista Wolfe, Lost in the Funhouse (for short story The Meneliad) by John Barth, House of Names by Colm Toiben, Ithaca Speaks by Luigi Malerba, The Lost Books of the Odyssey by Zacharey Mason, and the other Stephen Fry myth books on my wishlist. Let me know what you thought of these books, the ones I reviewed or the ones I have yet to read, or the ones you recommend, I love talking about books. If this post does well enough that I think the effort is worth it I might do it again once I get through the other books I listed above.
Dancing Away With My Heart
Clark Kent/Superman X Batman! Sister Reader
Warnings: suggestive content
Words:1081
Gotham newspaper was the talk of the city. Y/N was offended they wrote Clark as a low social status man and was only after her money. Clark was offended they wrote Y/N as desiring a one night engagement. Bruce was offended that Clark dared to dance with his baby sister. Selina knew she was going to have to deal with her husband's disapproval to which she disagreed. Alfred was delighted to see his adopted daughter found solace even for just a dance
Arthur's notes - Thank you for reading! The story is based on the movie Gotham By Gaslight. Reader's middle name is Martha after her mother.
Tumblr media
Inside the dining room of my home Wayne Manor. I sit among the chair wearing my f/c casual dress. Alfred, sits with me as we enjoy a cup of tea. I hear the entrance door open and slam shut. Bruce, is home and is likely beyond mad about me dancing with, Clark. I honestly wish he could be happy for me, the way I'm happy for him and Selina. He's so protective of me. I understand why but still it hurts how much he doesn't want me to be with Clark.
"Miss Y/N may I offer you a bit of advice"
"oh, dear you're not happy with me too" I sigh in defeat preparing for my sassy father figure try to point me in the right direction. Because he loves me.
"not a bit Ms. I wish only you ease your brother's mind by telling him that you care for Mr Kent" he said with a gentle smile
"oh dear how did you know?" I sigh as I regrettably feel my cheeks redden
"some thing's are clearer than others. I saw the genuineness in both your eyes. Try as you may to deny to yourself or anyone for that matter miss Y/N. You have been in love with him for quite some time and you have my blessing"
My heart melts, remembering the night perfectly. Alfred was right, again. Days past. My mind would only think of Clark. How strong he felt with his hand on mine and on my waist. I'd do anything to dance with him again. His smile that melted mine into a soft smile. I still regret not seeing what kissing him would feel like. Though I probably wouldn't have stopped. As well as my overprotective brother might actually would have killed him. The beautiful evening sun shun as I sit outside on the swing that was tied to the upper branch of the oak tree. My adopted nephew Grayson steps up. He holds the rope on the swing, leaning his head on the rope.
"evening Grayson"
"evening auntie Y/N... So have you written your boyfriend?" he smirked
"boyfriend" I chuckled gently shaking his chin "where'd you get a funny idea like that lad"
I lower my hand as he grinned
"honestly auntie I'm 13 years old. I know what love is.."
"you wouldn't happen to be referring to Miss Zatanna" I asked chuckling
His cheeks turn bright red causing me laugh. I kiss my nephew's head. Jason, carries Tim on his back as he steps to Grayson and I.
"greetings boy's" I smiled
"hey auntie" Jason casually said
"greetings auntie!" Tim delightfully said
I chuckled "how are you my boy's?"
"ol' Jay refused to allow me to focus on my important project until I promised to come play" Tim sighed
"it's the only way the little vampire will get some sun" Jason's joked
"I am not a vampire!" Tim defends appalled
I chuckled "he's just jealous because you have the strongest mind"
"hey!" Jason and Grayson offended
I smile to Jason "oh well Jay is the strongest willed" I then smile to Grayson "and Grayson has the strongest heart"
All three of my nephew's smiled as proudness was filled on my face. I then wonder if I should write Clark. I don't want him to think I had insincere intentions. He's so selfless and kind. He's good to my nephew's. It warms my heart in a unique unexplainable way.
Selina's P. O. V
The moonlight sky shun brightly providing light into our bedroom. Wearing my thin black lace nightgown as I lay sideways on our bed. I softly hummed watching my husband undress. He would not look me in the eye.
I sadly smile "you're still mad at me for not picking your side"
"no" he grunts "I know you care for my sister and are only looking out for her well being"
"but.." I sigh
He steps to the bed moving the covers. His arms stop moving.
"I promised to protect her" his voice heaving "I wish not to.." he stammered, his face dropping that causes my heart to ache for him.
"oh, Bruce" I tenderly grasp his hand "let me hold you my love"
I pull him into the bed and into my small arms. I kiss his forehead, and part from my husband. I hold his face with my small hands. He rest his face on my palm. My husband heavily breaths. I run my knuckles through his hair. He loves his sister so much that I sometimes think he forgets she's his sister and not his daughter. Sometimes we have conversations that sound like we're her parents. I'm grateful for that, because then I can have more faith in my life to look after those adorable boy's. I cup his face has his saddened face. His eyes swelling.
"your love for your sister is undeniable my love and she undoubtedly loves you too. Not me, not Clark nor anyone can change that. He will be good to her.." I then made a threatening look "and if he isn't then I will scratch his eyes out!"
He chuckled wrapped his arm's around me and then kisses my lips deeply.
"thank you" he genuinely said
"you may thank your beautiful wife in a other way darling" I give him a deep kiss as he lifts my nightgown upward....
Clark's P. O. V
In my home town, Smallville. The sun shines brightly. At my parents farm. I rest my head against the tree laying back. I impatiently open the letter I had received from Gotham.
~ Gotham, May. 18, 1990
My Dearest Friend,
I often dream of the night we had together. Dancing with our hearts touching. My smile never leaving my face. No matter what people will say or write I was truly happy to have your company. I ask of you, do not let the world nor my brother convince you otherwise. It has been quite some time since I have had the joy of having you in my life. Know I will forever cherish the beautiful dance we shared together and hope for you to step on my toes again
Yours truly
Y/N M. Wayne ~
I softly chuckle with a warm feeling within my core. I fold the letter. I place it within my pocket. I softly hummed relaxing as I breath in the spring air. I have to write her back! No I have to see her!
JM JK timeline.- my observations how they grew over the years  Part 3
Disclaimer: these are my own opinions and conclusions.  Feel free to disagree, but hate or aggression will be unacceptable.
This is coming out so much longer than I anticipated, so I decided to post this in a couple of parts.
2016 was a big big year for Jikook.  There is sooooo much content out there, I just can’t refer to everything.  I had to pick and choose, hope I did so wisely. No Twitter, no song recommendations (they may or may not be relevant, but I decided not to go there).
2016 part 1
End of 2015 was the beginning.  Both JM and JK were putting out feelers, trying not only to figure out what this thing between them was, but also how far to take it.  I can only imagine they were filled with the excitement that the attraction was mutual, but there were (and sadly still are) so many obstacles to face.
What does it mean for the band?  Do the others know? Do they let them know?  When do they let them know?  How does it affect the others? And I am sure they also faced the fears of what happens if it doesn’t work out.
I know they were young, and when you’re young you take more risks, you think things over less, but I’m sure those questions did cross their minds and did affect their relationship over the years.
So, end of 2015 was putting out the feelers, testing the waters, and 2016 was when they stepped up a gear, jumped into the water, so to say.  There is a clear shift in their behaviour.  We see all the changes that occurred in late 2015 and so much more.  They are closer, touchier, slightly bolder.
There are the stares. JK at JM.  JM at JK.  Both at each other.  These aren’t just one looking at another.  These are just something special.  You can see the attraction, the adoration in their eyes, on their faces.
2016 is the year where we also start to see the shift beyond ‘skinship’.  The ‘skinship’ is still there but there is so much more.  There are moments when it seems like they are afraid to touch, so we see all those little touches, light brushes, micro touches, almost touches.  On the one hand they can’t keep their hands off each other, but it’s gentle, hesitant, like it’s something to hide.  If this is only ‘skinship’ what is there to hide?  Why the hesitance?
JK and JM were always close. But now JK lets us see it.  Prior to 2015 he shied away from JM’s touches, his closeness, his forwardness, his shamelessness (as JK himself put it). From 2015 that started to change, and we see it even more in 2016.  Not only doesn’t he shy away, but he also initiates this closeness.  He is not afraid anymore to show just how important JM is to him, how JM is his anchor.  JM is there to calm him, to sooth him when he is nervous or anxious, to be happy for him, to nudge him on to push him to do more (like speaking at award shows) and to support him and compliment him when he does.
Through the year we can also see a push and pull in the relationship.  They are getting their footing within the relationship.  Setting the boundaries.  This is a process, and it takes time.  JM is JK’s elder. What does that mean for their relationship? Does JK have to come whenever he is summoned?  Does JK have to keep calling JM hyang? JK starts being defiant.  Sometimes calling JM without the honorifics.  There are times that it bothers JM, but sometimes he loves it. They are working into a relationship – are they on equal grounds?  This is something they are working through.
Tumblr media
2016 is the year JK comes of age.  A most significant right of passage in SK culture.
This is a year that gives oh so much Jikook content.  The fan meets, the behind the scenes clips, the music awards. This is the year of BV1, several most conspicuous Vlives, including the Osaka Vlive and the famous Hobi Vlive.  This is also when we got the notorious ‘Own it’ dance practice.  There’s the famous “Manila Fight” – most definitely not something I am going to touch upon.  Maybe it happened, maybe it didn’t.  Maybe there was friction, maybe there wasn’t. I, for one, don’t feel like I have enough content to base a conclusion on.
2016 was a substantial year for the two.  I’m aware that there is so much content out there, so I’ll only be touching the iceberg here:
Sapporo snow festival 7 Feb 2016 – JK joins JM in front of the camera – sending kisses to the camera but then leaning in towards JM.  Did he give him a kiss?  JM’s surprised reaction though...
Tumblr media
7 May 2016 Vlive – JK an JM being all flirty.
Tumblr media
12 May 2016 fan sign – JK trying to put a flower crown on JM’s head.  The two in their own world, playing a game, JM lifting JK up in the air, stabilizing JK with his hand and making sure he doesn’t fall.  Again, they are close, they are in their own world, doing ‘them’, no matter where they are.  This is the same fan sign JM tells JK that he is sitting in the wrong place, and his place is next to him.
Tumblr media
Moments in BV 1 –May 2016.
JK sleeps in lounge room on sofa with JM, instead of on a bed with Suga.  JK fell asleep, and JM sets him up with a pillow and covers him up.
JK’s coming of age day Vlive.
The famous JK JM discussion about men checking out their selfies (we can see how JK is still struggling with his ideas or conception of what is appropriate, ‘right’ behaviour for a ‘man’).
JK’s “he’s driving me nuts” over JM lagging behind (Hobi’s reaction to JK’s rant is priceless), but still stops to wait for him all the time.
The hand wrestling (JM losing every single time, and JM ignoring poor Jin when he offers to hand wrestle with him – was it really hand wrestling or hand holding?).
JM misplacing his phone, and JK backing out of going all ‘hidden camera’ on JM, showing him he has the phone the minute he sees him.
JK’s “I will sleep here with Jimin” in the camper.  JM playing footsies with JK’s crotch (JM playing footsies seems to be a reoccurring theme).
JM feeding his Kookie (So, what’s new?).
Tumblr media
JK’s coming of age performance.  This is a big one for me.  It’s JK’s song choice and him asking JM to do it with him.  The song JK chose to dance to is Park Ji Yoon’s Adult ceremony:
Hey you, why are you hesitating? I know you want me
Right now in front of you, I know what you want,
What you’re waiting for, just come here
 I’m not that little girl,
You used to know anymore,
I’m a woman now
I’m thankful that you’ve waited for me
Now I’ll become a woman at your kiss
 I’m not a little girl anymore
Don’t hesitate any longer
As much as you waited, I’ve waited for this day too
Give me twenty stems of roses, so I can feel your love
 As I wait for you, I close my eyes
 Hey you, I want to give you permission to give me your love
Teach me how love is so sweet and fragrant
 It was hard looking at you suffering and waiting
My heart even hurt
But now came the day
where there is no reason
to wait anymore
 I’m not a little girl anymore
Don’t hesitate any longer
As much as you waited, I’ve waited for this day too
Give me twenty stems of roses, so I can feel your love
As I wait for you, I close my eyes
https://lyricstranslate.com
The song’s message is clear. Is it a coincidence JK chose JM to dance this with him?  I don’t think so.  The Bangtan Bomb (21 Sep 2016) with their practice -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4oIpsRemPA .
You can tell JM knows exactly how this looks like being all shy and flustered during the rehearsals. The members reactions during the dress rehearsal also are pretty telling.  Who is JK sending this message to? JM? Us?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
13 July 2016 JM and Jin reacting to Minwoo & JK’s celebrity bromance.  JM taking it a bit far there, expressing his jealousy and how JK doesn’t treat him the same, saying he has no feeling for him.  Seriously JM?  I kind of wonder here whether JM is trying to down play what’s going on between the two, or if he is genuinely jealous, maybe because he feels that JK is holding himself back with him, especially in front of the cameras or around others.  We do hear later in the year JM’s frustration that JK doesn’t say he loves him (Jin eats Vlive).
OK, now for the famous suspicious as Vlives.  I will tackle them just a little bit. I am not going to analyse them, there has been plenty of that going around.  I do, though, want to talk about them just a bit.
As far as I am concerned, both Vlives don’t prove the relationship between the boys.  They most definitely are very suspicious though.
The Osaka Vlive -12 July 2016, when Tae surprises JK in his hotel room - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjjAbQLXrEM .  JK is undressed, lights are dimmed, he has loud sultry music playing, makeup is smudged, he’s acting pretty suspicious as a whole.  I think that reaching a conclusion that JK has someone in the room with him is not far fetched.  Someone he obviously doesn’t want the camera to see.  Is it JM?  We really can’t know.  I have seen analyses that hear him calling out JM’s name when Tae’s at the door, or pointing out JM’s phone or clothes and shoes are in the room.  To me that is outright speculation. But I do believe someone was there, someone JK didn’t want to show up on camera.
A question I ask myself, though, if it wasn’t JM in the room, is why JM is obviously pissed at Tae the next day, when during his Vlive, he repeats several times not to let Tae into the room for the live?  Is it connected?  That’s for them to know, and us to probably never find out.
Then there is Hobi’s Vlive, 13 Aug 2016.  Hobi starts his live, saying how hungry .  This is an important piece of information to remember for later on.  He goes to JM’s room.  It takes time for JM to open the door, Hobi finally pushing himself in, saying how he is going to show off JM’s room.  Only thing is that they stand at the entrance, then walk slowly into the room, not turning the camera away from their faces, all the while Hobi looking worryingly into the room.  It seemed like he was looking at something inside the room.
The camera is turned into the room, avoiding certain areas.  They come into the room to discover an enormous amount of food, and JM explains that he is starving and that’s why he ordered so much.  When Hobi entered the room he asks JM what he was doing, and he answered that he was boiling water for ramen.  So he was going to eat all that food and ramen by himself? They converse, and then V comes. At some point V takes JM’s ramen, after JM stated it was his manager’s (is this the same manager JM checks out during his future live?), and leaves the room.  Then Hobi says he’ll go and leave the camera with JM.
The question I ask is, why did Hobi, who was really hungry, leave JM’s room when JM, obviously, had enough food for two?  We saw JM eat later, and he most definitely didn’t finish all the food he ordered by himself.  Then, before Hobi leaves JM with the Vlive camera, he goes to the bed, where JM is lying, and starts teasing him being all handsy with him and going: “Oh Jimin, oh jimin” – what was that about?
JM is left alone, also managing the camera, not showing the whole room.   The whole time he is acting funny, grinning to what looks like someone off camera, seems like he talks to something/someone off camera, the whole vibe is that he isn’t alone in the room.  But the definitive proof that there was someone in the room with him was when at some point the camera is facing JM, who is sitting next to the tv.  Then, something happens.
Is it a ghost?  Is it a plain? No, it’s super JK…  But seriously, there was someone in the room, someone who’s reflection we got to see in the tv.
To sum it up, here too JM is not alone in the room.  Is it JK? That we don’t know for sure. Suspicions are high, but that’s what they are - suspicions.  He does, at some point talk about inviting other members to join him (why didn’t he ask Hobi to stay and eat with him?????), and gives a pretty lame explanation as to why he isn’t calling JK to join (stating that he doesn’t listen to him anymore.  Again with this JM?).
A question I ask myself is why is it always those two that seem to have someone hiding in their room during the lives????
14 Aug 2016 upload of ‘Own it’ dance practice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMprwPSFLyU .
This is private dance practice, just JM and JK, at what looks like late at night, lights dimmed, to a highly explicit song.  It’s filmed by them, as we can see them cutting and returning to the camera from time to time.  During the dance JM clearly has an erection.  He is aware of it, looks down at it, points it out to JK, and at some point changes his shirt to cover it up.   They don’t stop dancing. They don’t stop recording.  They are clearly having a good time.
This clip is uploaded to BangtanTV in 2016 and is still there.  I can reassure you that both JM and JK are aware of what is seen in this clip, and still this clip was uploaded, and is still online.  It’s more the atmosphere (alone, dimmed lighting) and the choice of song to dance to that indicates the high level of intimacy and the feeling is that this is just something ‘more’.
✍︎︎ Also I can really see Kunikida being the type of guy to get you a jar with all the reasons to why he loves you so much 🥺
✍︎︎ He once sent you a really cute letter and it made you tear up
“My love is forever yours. Come rain and sunshine, I will treat you like a diamond and will never let you stay a mile from me. Even if you are far away from me, you will never leave my heart even for a second. My love for you will blossom until my dying days because I have felt purpose and I want to show you my love.
While I might not have the most tantalizing words at my disposal to express my love to you in person, I will manage these three words (I love you) to let you know that my world revolves around you all year round. Knowing you are with me makes my life a dream come true.
I remember the first time I saw you. I knew I wanted to be with you from the moment I laid eyes on you. I couldn’t stop looking at you, your eyes, your smile – you stole my heart the first moment you spoke. I didn’t believe in love at first sight until I met you.
Remembering our first kiss is remembering since when my heart beats for you. When we first held hands, our souls became one. Seeing you is feeling everything is fine. My love, I share all my feelings with you.
And to this day, I can’t believe you chose me to be with you. You’re everything I want as a partner and you’re mine. Don’t think for a minute that I don’t appreciate everything you do for us. You’re everything to me and I love you.
-Your Lover Kunikida Doppo”
✍︎︎ At the end I can proudly say
✍︎︎ Kunikida Doppo is absolutely whipped for you but will be a little tsundere about it ❤︎
favourite thing about them:
I know this is more headcanony but I love how outright autistic he is !!!!!!!! He’s strange and it’s not even hidden or anything he’s a funny little guy!! Also the deep connection he’s able to create with Laura and his compassion :]
Least favourite thing about them:
Off the top of my head? How much of a bitch he was to Bobby in the pilot lmao
Favourite line:
“The sound wind makes through the pines. The sentience of animals. What we fear in the dark, and what lies beyond the darkness….I’m talking about seeing beyond fear, Roger. About looking at the world with love”
Love love loveeeee twin peaks is about so many things and love is one that holds the most significance for me <3
brOTP:
Cooper and Lucy <3 they r best buddies and talk knitwear all the time <33 also Albert!! And Diane!! Aaaaaaa
OTP:
Coopy and Harry ;u;
nOTP:
Cooper and audrey,, if u ship that kindly leave my blog and block me >:[
Random headcanon:
He came out as trans to Caroline while they were dating and she was really happy for him :)
Unpopular opinion:
Uhhh idk there’s a lot of talk about coop being too invested in Laura’s case to the point that he loses objectivity? Eh I don’t vibe with that and I don’t think it’s bad that he was so moved by the death of an underage girl who was sexually abused,, reading of a character based on if they r a good detective or not is short sighted to me away way..? Idk shdjdjdj
Also people talk about him being naive and whatnot when he talks about twin peaks but I disagree, showing interest in something doesn’t mean u don’t know it’s got a dark underside, Cooper was well aware of that and I don’t think ppl should see his hope and optimism as a character flaw but that’s just me idk
Song I associate with them:
I have a playlist aheem heem ;v;
Sothis, the Church of Seiros and Byleth: A Pagan Reading
Due to L!Byleth and the minor hyperfixation he caused I decided to make a whole discussion on how I personally view Sothis, the Church of Seiros as a whole, and examine Byleth's role in the story.
So just some ground rules before I begin:
This is just how I personally viewed the story as I played it, and my own perspective on the plot and meaning behind certain things. I am open to discussion in the comments and reblogs, and if you disagree with my opinion that's perfectly fine. Also so much of this is going to read like headcanons/assumptions loosely supported by canon's thin red strings and I am ok with that.
If any in-game quotes are used they will mostly come from the Church Library since it's easy to check but I'll paraphrase important scenes that I can remember.
Also after compiling a timeline of events best I can understand it I have made a few assumptions: worship of Sothis existed before the Church of Seiros (perhaps even going as far back as pre-Calamity times) and thus Church doctrine and beliefs is largely based upon previously established beliefs about the Goddess. This doesn't have too much to do with the analysis itself, but I just wanted to say it as I quote The Book of Seiros parts a few times and the writings in those books I hold to have a basis in that pre-Church faith.
With those in place, allow me to begin.
The Sothis/Church of Seiros Meta:
While there have been many metas comparing Sothis and the Church to medieval Christianity, I have always looked at them both through a distinctly non-Christian, Pagan lense.
I myself am a syncretic polytheist who has a complicated history with Southern Baptists. These two core aspects of my spiritual life does color my perceptions of the religion presented in this game and I am fully aware of that. Three Houses came at a time in my life where I was finally seperating myself from my latent Christianity, and exercising my Pagan goggles on this was a major step I took towards that. My intention here isn't to say that Christian coding doesn't exist, but to simply give my ideas and perspective on the religion presented in this game.
First, allow me to give the define the Gods through the lense of a Pagan as it's important to the framing of my ideas:
"The Gods are real, sentient, disembodied minds with awesome greatness and powers beyond what we humans can currently explain with science."
This is the simplest, shortest definition of the Gods I can give and Sothis, beyond a shadow of a doubt, hits all of the criteria as she is presented in the game. The Pagan conception of the Gods does not require any pretense of tri-omnism, and I believe it's best to look at Sothis, and many other FE Gods, through this lense. Sothis, when she was alive and even when she is "dead," is capable of amazing feats such as creating life, turning back time in a limited capacity, and restoring entire continents to life after calamity. While she is not tri-omni, she does not need to be so to be a Goddess and one worthy of worship and reverence.
Church doctrine itself also exhibits other fundamental aspects of Pagan practice and belief that are important to me and many others: animism and the reciprocity cycle. As stated by The Book of Seiros, Part 1,
"The Revelation.The Goddess is all things. She is heaven above and the land below. She is eternity incarnate. She is the present, the past, and the future. Her eyes see all. Her ears hear all. Her hands receive all."
Obvious allusions to omnipresence aside, another reading of this passage is a far more esoteric, and hard to put into words, aspect of Pagan belief about the Gods. In a sense , the Gods are not limited by the physical constraints of the world and their bodies are inherently an aspect of the very universe itself. They are not omnipresent at all times, but they can be wherever they wish to be especially wherever their presence and power is strongest. That is actually the purpose of idols, alters, and temples. The Gods are not idols or are bound by them, those things are simply repositories to allow us humans to connect with and worship them.
The natural world as well can be the "body" of a God. Places where their spirits decide to dwell. Natural phenomenon one can feel their presence in. They are not limited to these places, but upkeep of them is necessary to maintain their power and spirit. In this way that passage can be read as Fodlan and the Blue Sea Star being the places where Sothis' spirit chooses to reside along with her actual remains needing to be maintained to keep her spirit maintained. Her sacred body likely extends across all of Fodlan and her spirit resides most strongly as the Blue Sea Star.
Gods in FE also, more often than not, have a physical body that is important for their connection to the physical world. FE Gods are not incapable of interacting with or watching over the physical world from the spiritual, but have much more free reign when their physical body is alive. The places where their bodies are buried are where their power is most heavily felt, and their spirits the strongest, as evidenced by the Mila Tree and the Good Ending of Future Past in Awakening. This what I believe the true purpose of the Sealed Forest to be. Given how protective Rhea is of the place, the strange alter and Crest of Flames that is just there, and that being where Byleth awakens and Sothis remembers, either parts or the entire rest of Sothis' physical body must be buried there and not actually in the Holy Tomb.
As an aside, the remains of the Nabateans can also be seen through this lense but to a lesser degree. It's obvious that parts of their souls and power remain with their bodies, and thus, maintaining the Relics, Crestsones, and the other Nabatean remains not fashioned into weapons would be of utmost importance to Rhea. Because, if they were to be lost or damaged her kin's spirits may forever be lost to the physical world.
Fodlan being the sacred body of Sothis is also why I believe the Church of Seiros to be an ethnic religion and a henotheistic one to the people of Fodlan. The Goddess is only ever credited in the creation story and a lot of other Church doctrines as having created and choosing Fodlan as her sacred ground. The people of Fodlan likewise are seen as her sacred people. Nothing in Church doctrine says that Sothis is the only God to exist and I truly cannot remember a single instance where anyone says other religions outside the Church are false ones. Hence why I say Fodlanders are henotheistic, where they do not deny the existence of other Gods, but Sothis is the most important and only one worshipped by them. To the people of Fodlan as long as foreigners do not deny her existence and those of Fodlandic descent worship her as they should there is no cause for an uproar.
This is not to say other religions can be practiced freely on Sothis' sacred ground, as evidenced by the women in Abyss who says she worships there "because Abyss is where it is allowed." Along with Atheism among Fodlanders to be a taboo in their societies. Whilst I don't see the Church to be a beacon of religious tolerance (or that Fodlanders don't believe their religion to be the best), I also do not believe them to be proselytizers to places outside of Fodlan.
The reciprocity cycle also has a place within Church doctrine. The Book of Seiros, Part V describes the various commandments Sothis gave to her people and how if they abide by them the Goddess pays the people back with blessings and gifts. Textbook reciprocity is doing something for the Gods, such as sacrifice or ritual, and gaining something back in return or the Gods do something for you and you give back to them in turn. Reciprocity can be as simple as giving thanks for the blessings the Gods give or complex as full ritual, sacrifice, and or prayer to gain a blessing/aid or give thanks for one. The best case of reciprocity I see in game is the restoration quest for the Saint Statues. Whilst the Saints are complicated in how I believe their divinity is handled there is no doubt the player receives blessings from them for restoring their icons.
(While I would like to devote an entire section to them and the Nabateans in general like 80 - 90% of my ideas are headcanon that I'm still not sure of. I don't think the Nabateans are Gods like Sothis is however immortal or long-lived they may be. I also still don't know whether the Saints would be worshiped or venerated in the Church, as I still don't understand the distinction of those two things myself, so I don't want to make a judgement call).
What about Byleth?
Byleth...is tricky. Now, I must preface, that all of this is my opinion. Some of it may not be supported by the game, but this is how I personally write him and his status regarding everything we see in game.
Byleth is, for all intents and purposes, the 13th potential vessel for Sothis to return to the world as they were given Sothis' Creststone on the request of Sitri. Here's the thing. I personally do not believe that Sothis is truly dead or that Byleth manifested her consciousness on happenstance.  It has been my personal belief ever since playing the game for the first time that Sothis' spirit does indeed reside in the heavens and that the piece of Sothis that resides in Byleth until his awakening is only a fragment. Along with that I believe that Sothis' consciousness and power manifested in Byleth specifically because Sothis wished for it to be so.
My ideas are centered around a few aspects of the game that have always stood out to me as rather strange if kept in line with the larger context.
Why after all this time and Rhea's many attempts did Sothis manifest in a stillborn child?
How was Sothis able to speak to Byleth and wake him after his 5 year coma?
Why does Byleth loose the Goddess' power at the end of Crimson Flower?
How was Sothis able to speak to Byleth if you choose to S-Support her?
How exactly was Byleth able to dream about something that happened long after Sothis' death even if he can access her memories?
These sticking points have always struck as odd given everything that Sothis says before Byleth's awakening. Sothis should not be able to speak to Byleth at all, but still does so only a few chapters later and comments on the war that Byleth was only privy to the very beginning of.
Hence my belief that Sothis' spirit as the Goddess of Fodlan does reside in the heavens, watching over the continent, and only able to interact with it and its people in subtle ways. Some of her spirit and power laid within her Creststone as it passed from vessel to vessel. One way or another, she was able to foresee the coming war that would change Fodlan fundamentally forever and chose to manifest that piece of her consciousness when the opportunity presented itself. It's why Byleth can dream of a battle that happened long after Sothis' death because he's remembering something experienced by the Creststone and knowledge given by the Goddess soul who resides in heaven.
I also believe that Byleth and Sothis as we saw them during the game was a mistake in some way. Byleth as his own entity was likely not supposed to be and the piece of Sothis' soul that was supposed to manifest wasn't supposed to be amnesiatic or at the very least not separate from Byleth. There were a few times pre-time skip where Sothis would be talking and Byleth's model would be moving and his facial expression changing. Almost like their thoughts were so intertwined that they were practically the same even before the awakening. It's very likely to me that Byleth's memory issues, lack of ability to properly express emotions, and other aspects of their character to be directly connected to the fact that Sothis' soul manifested incorrectly.
The Sothis he hears before waking from his coma and the one he speaks to during his S support is likely the full spirit of the Goddess communicating with him through great effort and only able to because he's her avatar. She knows of the pain Fodlan is experiencing because she can see it and feel it even as Byleth slumbers. Same thing for why Byleth would lose her power and soul piece on Crimson Flower, as Sothis may have interpreted siding with Edelgard as a rejection of being her avatar and simply deciding to be human instead (I don't wish to speak too long on a route I don't particularly like, but I felt that strange ending should be addressed).
My experience as someone who follows a Kemetic path leads me to not see Sothis' soul being split in this way as strange. In this particular religion, as I understand it, the soul is encompassed as multiple different parts all combining to make a singular being. Both Gods and humans have multiple parts to their souls, so one residing in the Creststone, later manifesting in Byleth, and another part residing in the heavens is plausible to me. Also if I wanted to compare Byleth to another FE character, his situation reminds me most of Nagi from FE 11 & 12 who is an amnesiac and likely an incarnation of Naga to aid Marth on his quest. Nagi doesn't get much characterization in those games, but it does show that incarnations/avatar of Gods, who aren't the confusing mess of Robin and Grima for instance, isn't a new concept in series for Byleth.
In terms of what happens after Byleth awakens I do believe that Byleth himself becomes a God or at the very least a demi-god in his own right. As it was Byleth absorbing the piece of Sothis' soul into his own, the Goddess' power was inherited by him alone. The inner turmoil caused by two souls sharing one body finally ceased and Byleth was fundamentally changed becoming, well, an Enlightened One. As the game doesn't really explore Sothis and Byleth much post-Time Skip, due to the war taking precedence and Byleth's unfortunate existence as a silent protag, how exactly he changes is up to personal interpretation. I personally believe he gained not only Sothis' power but some of Sothis' memories and insight that the Creststone soul piece had. He also gained greater control and range of emotional expression and probably took on some of the characteristics Sothis had.
Byleth is both an avatar of the Goddess and his own person at the same time. He is and is not Sothis.
Headcanon: The Gundalian culture is based on individualism, the Neathian culture is based on collectivism
Tumblr media
Race interpretation part one: Neathia
Summary: The Neathian culture is built on the core values of communities and collective thinking. While conformity within the society is of a high level, they pursue a 'closed gate' diplomacy towards other races - resulting in a 'bubble' phenomenon and becoming vulnerable to losing their sense of belonging. Centralised urban system, with regional reciprocity and redistribution, whereby the Queen plays a coordinator role, and exists as a unifying symbol along with the military.
(Wall-of-text warning ; with block-breaker illustrations, but a huge amount of information ahead.)
Okay, this topic is something I was thinking about for a long time, and I finally hit the point to collect my thoughts and write them down. I've seen a lot of people trying to build up/further and enrich the cultural and social-political features of the alien races we've seen in the series (namely Vestals, Neathians and Gundalians), and I felt some inspiration to put my take on these things into words.
It's not only intriguing to try one's hand on the world-further-building, but I felt, I have to explain how I imagine the build-up of the Neathian and Gundalian culture and society to make the story of the 'Neathian Special Squad' ('NSS') more understandable 'symbolically' and from the aspect of a 'cultural clash'. /For those, who follow the NSS: This is something that definitely happens later on, you just don't know about it yet./
I have to put a small disclaimer here: This entire piece of writing was conspired out of fun and passion towards the series. It was not meant to be a 100% professor approved scientific research, but a seemingly logical untangling of my personal train of thoughts concerning the fantasy creatures of the third season. And this means, there is going to be some personal opinion mixed in as well (especially at the rewriting parts).
I wish the readers to enjoy reading it regardless. You are always free to disagree or not to take it seriously. :) To me, headcanonizing and imagining things always meant to be fun.
Side note: I'll add canon elements as examples or refer to the events of Gundalian Invaders, although I have to admit, I'll do this mostly from memory. So If I get anything wrong, or just remember incorrectly, you are welcome to add-in or correct me! :)
Season: Bakugan: Gundalian Invaders (and Mechtanium Surge)
Language: English dub
Okay, let's go!
Gundalian Invaders - Slightly rewritten
The first and foremost reason I actually started writing this post, is because I had some issues with the characterisation of the Gundalians and Neathians in the third season. One side is depicted blatantly, purposelessly and one-dimensionally evil, while the other is portrayed to be the goodie-two-shoes victims with no backlashes. I wanted to swing over this simplicity and make an attempt at explaining, how I imagined these races to function. These interpretations were explored with the intention of both keeping the main features of the races, staying canon-compliant where possible, but change canon elements/propose ideas to turn the races into interesting (and on a theoretical level functioning) societies.
For these added or assumed ideas to work, some lore elements have to be changed or removed: For example the way Bakugan got to be on the planets. For this explanation see: a further point below.
This post discusses only Neathia for now. (Gundalia will probably get it's own post, as there is much more canon-divergence to be talked about.)
Tumblr media
Neathians
1. The beginnings and core values
Tumblr media
Due to the power of the Sacred Orb, almost the entire planet have relished in a lush fertility since the beginnings. (And this is why there are huge plants in their jungles. The wildlife also experienced a great upsurge by the life-force of the Orb.) This prosperity quickly enabled the Neathian race to organize into a peaceful and sharing society, because the wars over resources became redundant and unnecessary. The established racial mindset reallocated the focus from the individual needs to the communal efforts, and gives a ground for the Neathian values and collective thinking up to even the days of the season.
Neathians think mainly in groups: Let those be pairs (e.g. Fabia and Jin as fiancés; Linus and Neo Zipperator as brawling partners), teams (Neathian Special Squad; Friendship circles), communities (Castle Knights), and the biggest of them all, their entire race. These are all bigger or smaller communities within communities, and they play a major role in how Neathians perceive the world and themselves. Being in these relationship structures defines their place, grants them their basic mental frame, which they are able to think in, and not only their resources, but also their goals are shared with each other. This kind of goal assimilation is what makes them really efficient team players, and also provides them a strong social support from a mentalhygiene perspective. This important role of the sense of belonging makes Neathians both empowered while being in close social constructs , and extremely susceptible to losing these connections.
Tumblr media
Thinking like this, when Fabia lost her fiancè or Linus lost Neo, their grief extended further than their deaths or the traumatic events. Losing strong bonds like these put Neathians in a technical identity crisis, as it is a part of their personal perception and mental frame which were dismantled through these events. We have seen Fabia going to extremes to retrieve Aranaut - and to retrieve that part of her, which was lost with Jin. Just as when Rubanoid was handed to Linus, a new connection was formed to either replace or continue the old one in a different form. Fabia's communal bonds were successfully restored, when she also became a member of the brawlers.
The Neathian society is based on caring and cooperation to achieve a collective well-being. This is why communities play such a major role in their self-perception and world-perception.
2. Open-sources, but enclosed diplomacy
For most part, I've always imagined the Neathian race as an although proud and generous, but closed society. They share commodities with each other - within their society -, but it is very important, that only within it. The outside world (meaning outside of their habited planet) is fundamentally shut out of these transactions.
I often refer to this phenomenon of enclosedeness as the 'Neathian bubble':
Not only their mindset operates in closed communities, but their diplomacy too. They are generally passive towards other races, missing trust and a reason to pick up the communication /Up until the Gundalians came and the war started/. This perspective could be applied to understand, why could they be more insistent on and better at operating defensive mechanisms (layered shield generator), than initiating communication with the rest of the universe (Unlike Gundalians, Neathians have no ships or bigger means of transportation. Yes, teleportation is accessible for them, but I don't think they use it that often outside of Neathia.)
Tumblr media
I treat this as an explanation for why Neathia had only asked for outside help after the second shield generator went down - the situation became desperate and already being involved in the conflict, it was time to try and reach out for aid. According to these headcanons, I also think, Serena wasn't putting - or at least shouldn't have put - faith in the Brawlers so easily. The reason they weren't tested to prove their trustworthiness further than one question, is because she trusted Fabia's judgement. Without the support of a Neathian, outlanders are almost automatically dismissed. Their (or their Queen's) empathy and compassion may overwrite this code, but even by then they have to be made certain by proving the cause.
Tumblr media
Just as when Fabia accepted Ren, because she had seen how much he tried to prove himself. Winning Neathians’ trust is supposed to be a big and determining moment, because they ‘internalise’ you into their scoiety.
Neathians are capable of empathy and kindness (this is something they actively practice among each other), even towards outsiders, they just need time and proof to accept them. Trust is just not automatic towards them, and even so they keep their distance until they get used to it.
3. Personal paralel counterparts - Night elves and the Highborne of WoW
Tumblr media
When I think about Neathians, I often put them into paralel with the Night elves and the Highborne from World of Warcraft. For most part, I use their artistic motives, architecture, fashion and cultural approach as an inspiration for Neathians, as they are recognised as 'The pretty space elves' in my book too.
Beside the above mentioned, what could be imported from their WoW counterparts is a rather matriarchal social apparat. For example, Neathians traditionally having a Queen, and women being present in the military or in higher positions, playing important roles. //Just as by the Night elves leadership, religious and military roles being traditionally occupied by women (priestesses, wardens, sentinels).//
Another elven impression, which is more or less universal, is their sense of pride (I like to say it as the expression of 'Neathian pride '). Highborne in World of Warcraft are a quite prestigious race and are usually said to be a little 'aristocratic'. I can imagine the Neathians being lightly less, but somewhat similar on these terms, when it comes down to interacting with their own or other races: For example being proud of their appearance (Emphasizing their unique V-shaped forehead with adequate clothing and accessories), structuring buildings and constructs based on aesthetic instead of real functionality (using diamond as the main material of construction, structuring buildings with elegant but futuristic shapes), or being confident and showing immovable standing and opinion on things (towards outsiders).
As far as I know, the Warcraft elves used to be similarly passive and uninitiative - even mistrusting - towards other races too. And in this, it played part, that they also had exclusive access to a powerful source of power and prosperity, the Well of Eternity (an almost one-on-one counterpart to the Sacred Orb).
While the half-tribal connections of the Night elves derive from their ancient bonds with nature and druidism, the Neathian society feels more likely being based on a futuristic envisionment of these social relations. A civilisation that perfectly blends technology (teleportation technology, communication devices) with classic fantasy elements (knights), while still remaining tribal in the core (shared communality is just put into a modern environment). /Although I like to lean more into the fantasy setting, the technical advancement is undeniable there./
4. Overall economy
If we wanted to negotiate about their economy, I would say reciprocity and localised redistribution are the dominant mechanisms of it. The basic definition of economy builds on the premise of distribution of scarce resources. In this case, resources are not scarce, in fact, due to the Orb they are very much prosperous and renewing. This accessibility discounts the value of the traditional market trading, and supports the establishment of semi-centralised recollection and redistribution. The semi-centralisation here means regional production and consumption, whereby the accomodation of the population happens mainly territorialy, but these regional centres still have a connection to each other and the capitol. This economy is based on caring and well-being, and the high level of conformity and trust within the collective society results in a lack of currency usage (so, my headcanon is basically, that they don't use money).
5. Urbanisation and territorial layout
The reason we talk about a more physical apsect of the planets, is because the core values of the races both play a role, and mutually affect how I imagine their civilised hubs being developed. Communities form hubs and cities with strong connections - just like their society!
When I mentioned localised redistribution, I was also refering to the urban structure of the Neathian planet. Important to note, that Neathia is not just a city, or a country - just like Gundalia, it's the entire planet. What we've seen in the show is the capital of their urban system - which makes sense to be technically built around / in the immediate enclosure of the Sacred Orb, for it's the source of the relishing power. Assuming this, along the capital there could be a centralised territorial layout with rural areas (cities, villages), and untouched wilderness (due to the overflourishing flora and fauna; the urbanisation doesn't affect the entirety of the planet, there are a lot of uninhabited/uncharted areas).
Tumblr media
Here is a simple schematic illustration of the above.
The rural hubs not having physical connection with other centres due to the dangerous and untamable wilderness (see: Giant plants in the show) could have lead to the advancement of the teleportation technology. The cities are connected through this port-system, and also with the capital, which serves as the centre of the network.
6. The role of the queen and the military
Tumblr media
The main purpose of the current Queen is an overall governance with the direct help of a council consisting of the local leaders of the hubs. The queen bears not only a political, but a symbolical importance to the people. The concept of the Queen is a unifying symbol, someone who watches over the nation. The Neathians can stand behind her and being represented by her. But it's important to note, that her status is not as glorified as to be a despotic being, and her power is not extending much further than overall policies, diplomatic representation and helping the transactions of the local leaderships. There is much more power and independence shifted into the regional governance, rendering the Queen's position to be an effective coordinator between them and unifier, who keeps the nation together. /Still thinking about the way the queen is chosen/comes to the throne, but I had the idea of the next Queen being elected by the current Queen, so the order of succession is not based on the Queen’s family, nor being a community vote of the people./
The peace-oriented existence in itself doesn't require a military to exists, therefore I treat the Castle Knights as a mainly defensive organisation. This military serves as Neathia's defenders, bearing symbolic and community building purposes. Among the Castle Knights - just as the name itself suggests - the traditional medieval knight values show up primarily, such as loyality, humility, courage, faithfulness and the act of mercy. In their comprehension, being a Castle Knight is an act of service towards their country and the Queen, and is not mainly for warfare reasons. (To some extent, I assume martial arts and other forms of fighting - even brawling - is essentially a spiritual activity, which they pursue in order to keep their inner- and physical balance.)
As we've seen it the show, I assume the Palace also functions as the military's operation base. The head of the military is the current commander (formerly Jin, recently Elright), and under them operate several divisions with captains as division leaders. The separate divisions are Physical Fighting (both with weapon, like those defensive shock-sticks the guards are using - formerly offensive melee weapons until the fall of NSS - and hand-to-hand combat, e.g. used by Fabia), Technical staff (operating the shield generators and overseeing their areas) and Bakugan Brawling (this headcanon part is still under construction, but Elright used to be the former leader of this, and the reason he was promoted to commander after Jin’s death, is because the Neathians' realisation of the war swinging in favor of the Bakugan fights, so it was logical to put him as the next 'general leader'). /There may be other divisions outside of these, I just put out some ideas here./  Every guard receives education to some extent in all of these fields, but they end up specialising in something.
//The Neathian Special Squad (NSS) had it’s own divison under Captain Pyrehart, they were a special strike team with a unusual task: Staggering, forcing back or just divide the Gundalian leadership’s attention from focusing on their assault. Basically poking them with melee weapons until they either go away, or can’t concentrate on helping their Bakugan on the field and their monsters get defeated. According to the story - made up by me of course - after a tragedic mission this unit wasn’t restored, and the war effort shifted onto long-range fighting with Bakugan, Gear and Bakugan Assaults.//
7. So...where are the Bakugan?
Tumblr media
They have been mentioned here and there, but I'm sure, whoever made it this far into this theorising information dump, may wonder at this point: 'But what about the Bakugan?'
My simplest answer is, that I firmly want to believe, both Gundalia and Neathia had a civilised and established culture before the Bakugan appeared there.
According to the original lore, Bakugan existed on the planets since almost the beginnings. Now, this is part of those lore bits I would definitively change during a rewrite: I want to believe, Bakugan only appeared in their very recent history, almost as recently, as on Earth and Vestal itself.
Perhaps a Bakugan lore- and GI rewrite explanation deserved it's own post, but for the further understanding allow me to explain here a little: A similar event of raining cards - what the first season started with - occured on Neathia and Gundalia too, caused by the dimensional boom of Michael Gehabich and his transporter. The twist on this - and the effective solution to the problem of possible timeline inconsistencies - is that although the explosion caused this interference at one point in time, across cosmos and universes time flows differently. So technicaly the result of it - the raining cards and Bakugan being transported into the particular worlds - could happen at different point of their relative times - even years earlier or later! On Neathia and Gundalia it could happened a few years before on Earth, which covers most of the questions of the timeline-consistency /such as Ren being assigned to watch over Linehalt as a child etc./
Bakugan coming to these places has only an added effect: Just as on Earth, they are not (yet?) integrated into the society and culture of the planets so deeply to be any kind of pillar of their existence or basic civilisation. There could be a start (as having specialised researches, technology revolving around Bakugan, taking part in the war,..) regarding this internalisation process, but it still runs on the surface, and not in the 'veins' of the culture.
I hope this breakdown made sense in some form or another. I just felt an urge to pour out the content of my head. Looking back,this became longer and more detailed, than I originally intended, while also surely missing things because there is no worldbuilding without holes or further questions. The attempt to lay down the basics was made regardless haha!
As always, feel free to disagree and follow your own visions concerning the races and worldbuilding. :) This post was made to reflect back my personal interpretation of Neathians - just for fun and thinking out loud.
For the very end, I leave a disclamer here, which was supposed to go at the beginning, but it felt redundant to put there, so here it is:
I tried to approach it from a more sociological side, as focusing on a bigger, overall picture, common features, than create exact statements. (I would rather call this a speculation regarding the features of the races themselves, their core values, common attitudes, mindset - and this doesn't mean other questions are fully out of the picture. We are just discussing things, which can be derived from the features of the society itself, and make up a more or less coherent chain of thought for now. Other 'for fun' or miscellaneous headcanons, like fashion or physical traits will be covered another time.)
Thank you for coming to this TED mambling!
Dear new friend,
I just finished reading your messages. First of all, thank you. I think I would have been less traumatized out here if a lot of people took to sharing their thoughts on matters such as these in the manner in which you do.
I think I set myself up too because I be wanting to participate in certain topics and discussions and so often I find myself trying to sieve through the vitriol and pejoratives.
The gender of the word is feminine not masculine. I don’t see how that is misinformation.
"Sorry, the misinformation bit was because I was thinking about that tweet that went viral about this word being used only for woman. The person said it was an adjective, and you said it was an adjective, so I thought you were basing this information on that tweet. That day was crazy, some people spread this, wanted to change his pronouns, trend a hashtag and were saying he had came out... This was too much. And the "debunked" thing was about this tweet, as well. Not about the words being feminine and masculine. That's a fact, you're right."
I had no idea a tweet went viral like that claiming he wanted to change his pronouns. That's wild and I disagree. Lol. I think I've always maintained he uses He/him pronouns and said time and again I do not think he wants to be emasculated at all. As I said, that would have made him transgender not bigender and thus defeat the purpose. To be bigender he has to be two genders at the same time not one.
But I have been following the discussions on this topic on the bird app and I try my best to bring nuance to certain discussions. I try. Lol.
I take note of the differences between your language and Latin as you rightly pointed out. But I also do see the similarities and I think the explanation you gave and the examples you provided gives me a better understanding of the language structure.
"Yeah, totally fine hahah We tend to interpret things according to our own experiences; for me, a gendered word is part of my daily life, normal, and I don't bat an eye about it. Is just a word, the importance is in its meaning ─ and it suits filter SOOO well. For you, it's something more. At the end of the day, art is here to be interpreted, and if Jimin doesn't explicitly explain the filter performance, tattoos, set, outfits... It's open for interpretation. (And I'm not a person that tries to find hidden meanings. I simply enjoy what I enjoy. I have this thing about being as accurate as possible, so I try to stick to facts (like: I don't feel comfortable saying he chose these words, because I don't know if HE was the person that chose it (in the sense that he was the one that bring it up to the staff/company). Maybe someone else showed it to him and he was like: "Nice! I want it!". But I feel okay saying he's had a tattoo with these words (A fact). Also I don't make a big deal of most things ─ for me Jimin is Jimin and I'm supporting him regardless, he's precious)
(But Memories 2020 is coming and I'm almost sure they are going to show filter behind the scenes!!!! So we're going to understand better this masterpiece (I HOPE SO))
I understand what you mean. Some people are inclined towards taking the literal meaning of texts or in this case art and not read much into situations beyond what is presented at face value- not me🤣🤣🤣🤣
I do the magnifying glass and errthang👁
I think humans are complex and there's always a possibility of a psychological and or pathological stimulus underscoring their behaviors, choices and actions in most cases.
But that aside, I think it's easier to take a heteronormative view on things sometimes because cis straight has always been the norm even in appreciating art- but truth is, coding and co opting codified expressions is almost always part of queer culture and behavior too. If any other queer celebrity had used that expression, I would be reading much into it too beyond its semantics.
For me it's simple, would I be reading too too much into the language and art choice of someone I thought was cis straight? Hell No. Straight is boring and blunt as fuck.
Unless of course they were being intentionally witty or secretive about something, I'd assume and expect their expressions to be pretty much straight forward- generally. I went home to be would mean just that.
If I sensed the author were queer coding Home would mean something else entirely to be. Home becomes a symbol not a word. And if he chose to write that in Latin and not the language they spoke naturally, I'd assume there's something about that language that he likes and perhaps uses to code a queer message.
For closeted queer people who live in a world where they are constantly coerced to take on a duality and have an expressional alter egos- two identical identities with one being the facade and pretense through which they openly and largely perform normalcy of self, the other being their real self which they tuck away because it is inconsistent with the acceptable norms- I'd a take a very different approach to their art. But that's me.
If a straight person said they needed escape, it would mean something totally different to me than say if a queer person said they needed escape. Because those two are escaping two very different things.
For example, the words Moon and moonlight used by a straight person means nothing to me- perhaps because I just don't care much to look for its deeper meaning beyond the literal meaning of the words as presented. If it appears in a queer person's parlance, even if in passing, I assume immediately they are referencing something much more deeper, meaningful and coded.
Queer coding is a thing you know? And it's born out of necessity not choice sometimes.
Take for instance BTS's proclivity to 'queer codify' their music. Moon and moonlight has become symbolic of the inner struggles of a queer person amongst black 'educated' queer men and women. It's come to symbolize cultural norms and expectations and how those affect queer people- perhaps of all race.
In the Movie Moonlight, which has become the epitome of queer black struggles and desires for liberation, this motif was used to represent the struggles of a black boy dealing with the pressures of a hyper masculine society.
When RM references this in 4 Oclock, 'the whole world is blue under the moonlight' is he queer coding or just appropraiting queer parlance as buzz word? That expression takes on a whole new meaning were he queer. Blue symbolizes queerness- a theory popularized of course by the Film. When V who once wrote an allegedly 'queer coded song' Stigma says he is blue- what does he mean now? On the surface blue means blue. Would you take a straightforward view on this or assume its symbolic? And what is it symbolic of?? Sadness?? Gayness?
If RM had an accompanying tattoo as compliment to the song in his performance that evoked similar sentiments or hinted at a possible second meaning I wouldn't assume that that tattoo meant nothing or that it didn't have a deeper meaning behind it.
It's just as how Lil Nas X posted a city of rainbows and people said 'rainbows are rainbows. Y'all shouldn't read much into it.' But for queer people that was pretty much a declaration of his sexuality.
Later he had to post again and reiterate that that rainbow post was his coming out moment. 'I thought I made it obvious.'
Somethings are pretty much obvious.
For JM who don't speak Latin- unless he is secretly fluent in which case my bad- I don't think he cares so much about the grammar of the language beyond it's meaning. And perhaps gender? Grammatical gender I mean. That's just because the first thing you learn about Latin is that all the nouns are gendered?
I won't lie. When I first learned that I was supper fascinated about grammatical gender and why speakers of the language felt a need to gender every word of the language.
In the end, we all don't know. I'm out here convinced two Asian men are so gay they can't straight to save their asses. I have a tendency to view everything they do through queer lens. If they are not gay I'm pretty much gaslighting them you know?
I'm always fascinated by different point of views on a myriad of subjects. Just as you said, our diverse experiences inform our experiences and perspectives. I just hope people acknowledge how their straightness informs their understanding of queerness too and how that has a tendency to be invalidating and dismissive of queer issues and experiences.
But to me it's like, if Jikook are gay why do you have to interpret what they do through straight lens?
Personally, I wouldn't interpret straight through queer lens and force that view on to straight people. That would be homonormative? Assuming rainbow means straight people are gay when they are not, moon means feminine to straight men, that the use of the word God makes one a Christian- that's just silly and bizarre.
I use Namaste often and suddenly some people here think I'm Indian. I wish. They have one hell of a culture.
When I was reading through your messages, all that kept playing in my head was- that's a very 'straight' view on the matter. Lol. Please tell me you got the pun. Lol.
I think my opinion will remain the same on the matter if you placed any queer person in Jimin's stead. Any queer person that I believed was queer and had hinted a few times at exploring a dual identity or going through that phase at least.
I think I'd enjoy your blog if you had one.
I love love the lesson on Italian or is it Spanish?
Also, I would love your take on V and Stigma. A lot of queer stans have a queer reading of the lyrics- I see the appeal however I don't have a queer reading of it at all. Thoughts??
Namaste.
GOLDY
Why I don’t think Azula should’ve gotten a healing/redemption arc
k so I made this meme a couple weeks ago
Tumblr media
and I got a lot (a lot? Like 10 but that’s a lot for me) responses disagreeing with my post, which is fair because there’s really only a tiny subset of fans who fit into the “if you stan villains you’re a bad person” category, and Azula’s character (like most other things in atla) is fairly nuanced. I won’t dive into her personal psychology so much, just why I was satisfied with her arc as a viewer.
Note: I’m only speaking within the context of Atla. I haven’t read any of the comics or seen Lok so for the sake of this lil post those don’t exist.
Not enough time
Plain and simple, Azula didn’t have enough time for any sort of healing or redemption. She would’ve needed at least 2 seasons based on what Zuko went through. Adding more seasons for this purpose would feel kind of pointless. Maybe they should’ve explored this in other media but not within atla as the story works best as a tidy three season bit.
Along this same vein, I’m not viewing the show the same way as I would irl. If we’re being realistic, Azula was a horribly abused mentally ill 14 year old who most definitely should’ve gotten treatment. But this is a cartoon, where standards are a little different, which I’ll talk more about in a minute.
Iroh used to be a bad person/If Zuko changed so could she
This one is more complicated for me, but basically I view it like this. In the show, Iroh and Zuko display goodness before their redemption.
We see this with Zuko especially. He is banished for trying to protect the lives of fire nation soldiers from certain death. Twice he spares the life of his rival Zhao, even after that rival tried to kill him. In season two, he saves appa, risks blowing his cover to light lanterns for Jin, saves a town from mercenaries, and even when he’s robbing, he spares certain people (the pregnant woman for example) and mostly targets the wealthy. Zuko, even at his worst, had hard limits on his morality.
Iroh is more subtle. The most clear example comes from the flashback in “Zuko Alone” where Iroh gifts Zuko a dagger from the earth kingdom that he notes is of superior craftsmanship. This, to me, shows where the start of Iroh’s arc comes from: his appreciation of the other nations. It’s been noted before that Iroh has also mastered all four elements, even though he can only firebend. Redirecting lightning comes from waterbenders- likely learned before Iroh “turned good”. Even as their adversary, Iroh respects the people of Ba Sing Se for their resilience. (This again contrasts Zhao, who was so deranged he murdered the fucking moon just to win.) Finally, the dragons. Iroh is known as the dragon of the west even to people from Ba Sing Se- this means that he spared the lives of the final dragons before Lu Tens death. Like Zuko, Iroh shows mercy even when on the wrong side. Lu Ten’s death breaks Iroh because it forces him to finally come to terms with the fact that the fire nation is built on a lie. Fire nation superiority is a lie, and it’s one he’s known for a long time.
Azula doesn’t display any of these traits. The only time in the entire series where she apologizes is after she insults Ty Lee, and I’d argue it was an act of manipulation, as she quickly uses the apology to receive praise from Ty Lee. The beach episode is the only soft side we ever see to Azula, and all of her interactions can still be interpreted like my example. Was the comment about Ursa thinking she was a monster a slip of her mask or an attempt to “perform” like the others? We know Azula is a liar, so was she lying when she said ursa was right, or that it still hurt? Or both? And, mind you, I do love how this episode explores azula more closely, but I don’t believe being a nuanced villain makes you a redeemable one. Even as a child, Azula is cruel and takes pleasure in hurting Zuko, and animals, and her friends. She’s a master manipulator who makes friends through fear and intimidation. Imo, the only reason she doesn’t actually kill someone is because Avatar was technically a kids show, though that sure as fuck didn’t stop her from threatening multiple peoples lives. There is no action of Azula that signifies an ounce of good in her.
She was abused
1) a tragic backstory isn’t the be all end all of whether or not a character’s redeemable, and 2) So was Zuko. And probably Iroh and Ozai, and probably Azulan. The fire nation royal family is fucked up. Even if Azulan was a “good” father to Ozai and Iroh he was still a dictator who was grooming them to take over.
Having Azula be a puppet in her fathers game was an incredibly mature route for atla to take. Once again, it adds depth with a realistic take for Azula’s villainy. Very rarely are individuals born evil (enter nature v nuture debate here). Some of the worst people to ever exist were victims of abuse and neglect to varying degrees. Once again, though, this doesn’t suddenly render Azula open to redemption. And from a storytelling perspective, there’s parallels between Ozai and Iroh and Azula and Zuko.
Ozai continued the cycle of abuse, Iroh broke free from it, Zuko ended it, and Azula was broken by it. These are all things that happen in real life.
She’s 14
Oddly enough this is the argument that baffles me the most. I know I just said a whole lot about real life vs fiction, but I’m gonna pull the fiction card on this one. I can suspend belief with these characters and their ages. I don’t think any 12 year old could function after waking up from a coma and finding out his entire people were slaughtered and that he only had like, six months to save the world, regardless of his upbringing and power set. I also don’t think any 14 year old could lead a trio to infiltrate a city state, outsmart the shadow leader of said city state, and manipulate and entire little army for her favor.
There’s just a point where you have to suspend belief. The characters of avatar are fantastic, but are not realistic portrayals of people in their age group. Azula could be 14 as easily as she could be 25 and nothing about the narrative would change. The same is true for the rest of the main characters- even Aang, as youthful and fun loving as he is, also has more emotional maturity than anyone in the gaang, and more than most adults i know. If you want a realistic example of a child working through trauma, try Lilo from Lilo and Stich. Not anyone from Atla
Not everyone needs a happy ending.
This is ultimately what it comes down to for me. I like Azula as a villain. I like Azula as a villain who stays a villain and who is driven insane by power and paranoia. I like Macbeth. Azula is a tragedy- and that’s what I like.
So there ya have it folks. That’s my take. I’m writing this at five am with very little sleep, so please forgive typos and whatnot. I feel like maybe I haven’t explained everything the way I wanted to, but I can’t stop thinking about this, and the great thing about this show is that it’s fun to keep thinking about.
The Follies and Vices of You
cedric diggory x reader- part iv of series
based off the novel and film ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen
summary: Being the beloved sister of the incredibly wealthy Mr. Potter, you felt no need to rush into marriage. But one day, when you come to meet a new acquaintance, the proud Mr. Diggory, your views of love and follies change.
warnings: a bit of angst & tension! (gif is not mine, credit to owner!)
part i, part ii, part iii, part iv, part v
‘Maybe it’s that I find it hard to forgive the follies and vices of others, or their offenses against me. My good opinion, once lost, is lost forever.’ -Jane Austen
The month of January passed dreadfully slow, as you waited for something interesting to happen. As the snow fell softly onto the ground, thoughts wondered through your head rapidly, most of them involving Mr. Diggory. In fact, he occupied your mind most days. How dreadfully awkward that poor man is, you pondered, and yet how confident. His character never made sense to you, as awfully as he appeared on the outside, you could tell there was much beneath his many layers. But your thoughts were soon interrupted by a knock on the door, it was the post.
‘From Miss Ginerva, Miss Y/N.’ You smiled and nodded thankfully. Excited, you ripped the letter open and the inside read,
My Dearest Miss Y/N, I hope my letter find you very well. How dreadful these past few days have been, for all of this snow has made me think of nothing besides summer time. I was invited to stay at my brother Bill’s until the end February; Miss Hermione Granger will be attending alongside me, to encourage sisterly bonding. I am sorry to hear that Mr. Malfoy has resided back to his home up north, but I do hope that he continues to write you such pretty verses. I shall be home before the flowers bloom. Be well.
Much love, Ginerva
You sighed thinking of how even more boring the next few months would be without the company of a most dear friend.
Now that Mr. Malfoy was sent back home, the house was quieter than ever. Between Harry managing the estate, Sirius writing business proposals and Mr. Lupin locked up in the library; you felt most unentertained and gittery. Letters began being sent to you the day after he left, expressing a fondness for you, which kept your boredom to a minimum. You thought long about the letters exchanged between you and Mr. Malfoy; Ginny was certainly right in saying the verses were beautiful. She also urged you that there would soon be a proposal on the line if he kept with the letters, though you secretly hoped it wouldn't be anytime soon.
The next evening, to much of your excitement, you were joined by Mr. Fred and George Weasley for dinner, who were in the company of nobody other than Mr. Diggory. Reaching a hand out for each of the Weasley men, they took it graciously planting a kiss upon it. Extending out to Mr. Diggory as well, he ignored your gesture and simply bowed in your direction. After the questionable gesture from the latter of the men, you lead them to the dining room, where the rest of your family awaited.
The evening was going splendidly, much laughter and wide smiles reigned. That was, until a letter arrived addressed to you from Mr. Malfoy. You excused yourself from the table, to retire to the parlor to read it.
Blushing profusely and smiling at the beautiful verses addressed to you, unaware of the floorboards that creaked viciously behind; you sat on the armchair nearest the window of the parlor. You heard a throat clear at the doorway and shot your head up.
 ‘Mr. Diggory! I am so sorry, I mustn’t have heard of your following.’ Humming to yourself, you gazed out the window, ‘I do love this time of the year, Mr. Diggory. The snow is nothing short of lovely.’
‘Yes, Miss Potter, I do agree that the snow is very beautiful but I must interject and beckon you about some-‘
‘He’s thought to propose, you know. Mr. Malfoy that is. Quite strange, isn’t it; how young girls go to young women with only a proposal.’ You unknowingly interrupted in your dream state.
‘Miss Potter, I truly cannot help but to interject; however, there is a matter of urgency I’d like to discuss.’ Mr. Diggory huffed. Being pulled out of your trance, patience grew thin, you turned your head and snapped, ‘What is it, Mr. Diggory, that you feel so inclined to interrupt me for?’
‘Its addressing Mr. Malfoy. You see I am afraid I must interject on a most sensitive discussion topic.’
‘If you have anything negative to say about Mr. Malfoy, I must urge you that I'm the last person who would be inclined to hear it! And if you have some here to ruin my evening, I am afraid I won’t allow it.’
With that you grabbed your coat and trekked out into the falling snow. Footsteps not far behind you, you sped up; unwilling, or rather unwanting of hearing what anybody had to say. The crunching of snow only following you farther, as you followed the angelic pathway to the stone pavilion in the graden. You threw your back against the wall, sighing out deeply. Without a moment of peace Mr. Diggory entered your presence.
‘You cannot marry him’
You were taken aback by his sudden bluntness. Exasperated by his cultivated occurrence of strange actions you cocked your head at him.
‘May I ask you why, Mr. Diggory?’
‘The Malfoy family is least cordial, completely unattached and deranged from society. They are completely unsuitable for a family such as yours.’
‘A family such as mine?! Have you come here to separate an engagement or to insult my family, Mr. Diggory? Or rather, does your sudden interest in my affairs have anything to do with your dislike towards Mr. Malfoy; because believe me, Mr. Diggory, I know well of your disputes with the poor gentleman and will not stop an engagement from happening due to your pride and arrogance.’
‘No, Miss Potter! You know perfectly well that I find your family most respectable. I just find their family uncommony stiff for your reckless behavior.’
‘Reckless behavior! How dare you insult not only my upkeeping but a personality of another. Have you forgotten the follies and vices of you, Mr. Diggory? For who are you to judge another?’
‘Miss Y/N, has it ever occurred to you that you may be too harsh on me or perhaps my light on you may have been caused by the misjudgment of one’s character? I beg of you to enlighten me on why you find me the most disagreeable man.’
‘Well then, I beg you, Mr. Diggory, why you wish to separate a young couple who have grown quite fond of each other?’
‘Because I love you.’
There was a lull and Mr. Diggory halted. ‘I love you most ardently and I could not have you go another day more without you knowing of the likeness I have for you.’
You stood in silence, snow falling ever so godly on you both, speechless. Words clouded your mind, and you wanted to scream, and cry, and love, and erupt all at the same time. But rather than doing any of them, you looked back on him with a haze in your eyes.
‘I would not marry you if you were the last man in the world.’ You said walking away, allowing a tear slip silently from your face.
The next day there was a knock on your bedroom door early in the morning. Mr. Diggory walked in humbled and shy, ‘Miss Y/N, I’ve come to leave this for you. I hope you do me the honor to read it. Thank you much for your time.’
You had not even reached his gaze, for he spoke for too quickly and you were far too angry. Staring at the enveloped with a tear stained face for nearly an hour, you decided to open it.
Dear Miss Potter,
I hope my letter finds you in good health. I do not wish to impose on you again what I have said last night; for I am writing to you today not to remind you of said words, but rather converse upon the accusations you have brought upon me. I urge you that everything in this letter is the truth and have many to testify upon it.
Mr. Draco Malfoy and I had been connected since infancy, for his father, Lucius, and mine worked exceptionally close together. However, as Mr. Malfoy grew he became reckless; he gambled a large portion of his father’s money away and took no responsibilities seriously. Soon thereafter, his father wrote him out of his will, leaving nothing to his son. Mr. Malfoy became desperate for an inheritance; my father later offered him a job which he begrudgingly took. However, not more than seven months of work, he confessed a most passionate love to my sister. It did not take long for us to realize that he was only after her fortune for she was to inherit seven thousand pound a year. She was thirteen at the time and utterly heartbroken.
When my sister had gotten sick mere months later, my mother and I moved to London alongside her to get the best medical help. Unable to access our money without my father present, Mr. Lucius graciously lent us the sum of the bills. Unfortunately, my sister passed with just two months of treatment; she was truly a remarkable young woman. After the mourning, we paid what was due back to the Malfoy family; but for Mr. Draco Malfoy it was not enough. He hounded me for more money; knowing his dispositions I had given him the sum of his ask in hopes that he would become something of himself. He gambled the money away in two weeks. After that, I refused to give him anymore money, cutting him off for good.
Miss Y/N, I am terribly sorry to force the burden of the truth onto you, but I just felt that you ought to know. Please do keep the affairs containing my sister private, as I believe it be a disgrace to her memory to attach her name to one like his. Thank you for the time we have shared.
Yours, Mr. Cedric Diggory
(author’s note: oh my goodness! end of part 4!!! ending on a bit of a cliff hanger... i can't wait for you all to read the final chapter, which will be out soon! as always, let me know if you’d like to be part of this tag list! thank you as always for reading!)
