Tumblr media
The night was getting long. There was nearly an hour left before the new year and you finally found yourself settling down by the table counter in the kitchen after greeting other friends and joining groups for food and some chit chat time. You felt relieved that you went past the loud karaoke set that has been blasting all night since you arrived at the party.
Your cup of fruit punch was set on the table in front of you, along with your phone.  You peeked out at the window of the porch and saw some people lighting up fire cracker sticks. You would join them but it’s too cold out and you didn’t have the energy to do more tonight. All you could do was sigh. You were exhausted and Heeseung noticed. He just got off from a pool game in a different room when he saw you there.
You noticed a mistletoe up on the hall and wondered why it wasn’t put down yet before you even realized he walked through it.
“So who are you trying to kiss tonight?”
“What?” Your eyes widened at the question when Heeseung walked up with a cup of fruit juice in his hand and sat next to you.
Heeseung, who you knew since high school, was wearing all black. It was his style and he had a leather jacket on, which didn’t really match winter. This was typical: he’s very different from others in a way that you kind of find him attractive at times. You wouldn’t call it a crush after all of these years. He’s just… really nice to be around with.
When he saw that you were still staring at him with a shocked look, he looked at the mistletoe then back at you, and nudged his head at the decoration. You came to your senses and shook your head. “I just can’t believe they still have a mistletoe up here.”
“It’s Jake.” Heeseung tilted his head, hissing a bit. “I think he’s still trying to kiss his crush.”
“Christmas is over though.”
“His spirit is still up for it, for the new year at least.” Heeseung chuckled, noticing how some red decorations were still up in his house. He took a drink from his cup before setting it down. You laughed quietly along, then he asked, “I’m not really into new year kisses, unless the person I’m with feels the same as me.”
“Sorry to break it to you but I may not be interested.” Though it would be nice to have someone to kiss, and it would have to be the same feeling as his.
“It’s all good.” He grinned. “You seemed so busy earlier. Now, you’ve settled down?”
“Finally, actually.” You had the biggest sigh ever and he followed your breath to the cup in front of you.
“Oh, and you’re drinking fruit punch too?”
“Yeah,” You chuckled at how excited he sounded. “I’m a DD tonight.”
“Same.” Heeseung showed you his cup, then his lips twisted to the side uneasily. “Why are we so bad luck?”
“You’re right.” There went another sigh. “When I think about the year, only the bad days come to my mind.”
“You sound like you went through a lot.” Heeseung fiddled his fingers at his cup, and turned to you.
He could feel how long you’ve thought about the year all night. You were everywhere, and he meant literally. Every spot he was, you were there, and Jake’s house was like a big mansion. It seemed like you just wanted to get the day over with, and that was probably how your year went.
“How do you feel now?” Heeseung asked genuinely.
“Lifeless, but there’s an urge of fun trying to come out of me?” It felt like a confession, but you truly wanted to feel something and just didn’t know what to do for that to happen.
“There’s some hope.” He nodded, whispering to himself. He noticed the confused look on your face and he grinned. “What I mean is, today can be a good day. You just have to remember that you get to choose whether it is or not.”
You softly laughed, not because of how true his words were but the way his hand moved when he was making his point.
“That is true.” Your smile died down and you sighed. “I wish I realized that sooner. It just seems easier said than done.”
“Then, can I ask you what you want to do right now?” Heeseung suggested. He leaned onto the countertop and rested his head onto his fist. His blinks were slow, eyes stuck on you under that smile, so sweetly waiting. It felt like he was doing that the whole night, trying to listen to you.
“I honestly want a drink, but I can’t. I want to be responsible.” You looked away, finding your friends having the best night with their lovers. You wondered why you even said yes to being their designated driver for tonight when you should be having fun too. Somehow, you couldn’t feel the joy to get up and join them. It could be this conversation you’re having with Heeseung but you also didn’t want to end it because you felt seen in his presence. He’s listening to you and you didn’t want him to stop.
“You don’t have to be responsible.” Heeseung’s voice teased and you almost glared at him, then he continued. “I can be responsible for you.”
“Be responsible for me?”
He nodded once, then he turned to you. “The choices you make tonight.”
“How are my choices your responsibility?” You asked softly, hoping that you didn’t sound mad or crazy.
Heeseung pointed his chin to your phone that vibrated a second ago on the table. “It looks like your friends don't need a DD anymore.”
Your face burned up in joy as something ignited from inside of you. Your shocking face made him grin widely. You shook your head, still in denial that what you read from their texts were true. “No, no. I probably shouldn’t.”
“I said I can be responsible for you tonight.”
“What about your friends? Don’t they need you too? I just think it’ll be a hassle to drive so many people-”
Your words got cut when Heeseung called out your name, a tiny laugh followed shortly. He sounded desperately tired of your complaints, but also as if he was teasing you again.
“I promise you they won’t need me. They will leave with other friends later or end up sleeping here tonight. It happens every year.”
“Really?” You’re not a party goer to confirm but you couldn’t believe him just yet. He nodded once, then you continued. “That means you’ve been to plenty of new year parties.”
Perhaps, since you met him. You didn’t want to assume, and it hit you that he may have kissed plenty of people too. You could be slapping yourself for thinking that, but instead, you found yourself blushing.
“Yeah, but I don’t drink when it comes to big parties like these. Many friends can be irresponsible. I’d rather look out for them than get myself in some kind of trouble that I might regret.” Heeseung grabbed his fruit punch cup and took a drink before he cheered it at you. “Do you trust me now?”
“I’ll go get a beer.”
Heeseung grinned, as you stepped away. In a way, he felt proud that you’re listening to yourself but little did he know, you were willing to drink just a little so you could stay sober for him. For a second, you thought how peer pressuring that was, but then again, you wanted to drink too. A beer won’t do much to you. As you grabbed a can from the fridge, you peeked at his back. You had no idea what he’s really up to but there’s definitely something on his mind.
“What the heck?” Your voice jotted his head to you when you sat back down on the seat next to him. You set your drink on the table and leaned your head close to his hand to take a better look. “You made that just now?”
“Yeah.” Heeseung closed his fingers to tighten the napkin ring he made on his index finger. It had a butterfly at the top of it. His smile seemed to never leave the night as he adored how awed you were. “Do you want it?”
Without giving you a chance to answer, he took off the ring, held your hand up and slipped it through your finger.
“It’s so cute, wow. You’re… you’re a wizard.” You complimented before you opened the can of beer. You took a drink of it in two big gulps to wash your burning cheeks away.
“No one has ever called me that.” Heeseung laughed. You couldn’t tell if he liked it or if he was making fun of it. You just couldn’t help to explain.
“I really mean it. You don’t see people going to parties and making tangible stuff like this. They just drink, dance, and be loud.” You were still awed at the artistry work he did that was now wrapped at your finger. “I want to learn how to make this.”
Heeseung was relieved. You were listening to yourself and didn’t shy away from what you wanted to do. “I can teach you.”
In that moment, you met his eyes and the world seemed to stop around you. Heeseung began to lean in. Slowly, you followed his move. You didn’t keep track of the time or realize how close midnight was going to hit.
All of a sudden, you both heard a shout of his name from the microphone where a few of his friends were karaoking from. You both moved back quickly and your eyes followed that loud voice.
“Where is Heeseung? Where is he- OH THERE HE IS!” His friend pointed at him then waved his hand for him to come. “Dude, this is your song! You have to sing this! Come on!!! It’s Mistletoe!!!”
Heeseung shook his head as his friends laughed loudly through the room. You could almost tell this song seemed to be an inside joke within his friend group. You’d probably ask about it later because he looked so embarrassed right now. He got up from his seat and walked backward slowly, then he waved a hand at you with a shy grin. “I’ll be right back.”
You nodded and watched him dash to his friends. They cheered for him as one of them played the song and the other handed him the microphone.
As you watched him sing, you couldn’t tell if he was drunk or not. He seemed to blend in with his friends, and it looked so funny that you couldn’t stop smiling. Heeseung kept looking over to you, as if he was singing for you. With just that song, you felt like Christmas was still here.
By watching him and knowing he’s in your presence, your face was clouded by something you didn’t recognize. Whatever that may be, you found yourself a bit calm from his smile, a bit unguarded from the way he talked, and a bit in love from that closeness earlier. You wouldn’t allow yourself to hold back anything else now because his words seemed to always be right.
You applauded as the whole room cheered. One of his friends was announcing how soon the new year was going to be. Heeseung made his way back to you, just like his words. Your shy smiles mirrored each other. He didn’t sit back down on his seat because you stood up. A hand of yours hid in the pocket of your pants and the other, the one with the butterfly ring, held onto the counter as if you’re leaning onto it.
“I always forget how good you are at singing.” You complimented again. Why is he so good at everything?
“Thanks.” His shy smile was still there when he looked down at his feet.
Your eyes met again, somehow deeper than before. As your lips calmed, you wanted to take the initiative and follow your heart once again.
“Say, what are you doing tomorrow?” You asked.
Heeseung slightly tilted his head but his grin peeked out. “Why?”
“I don’t have anyone to spend the new year with. I hope it will be you.” It was almost as if you were whispering to him when you confessed. Your words were slow and the silence between you both moved the same length. His chuckling nod said it all.
“I would like it to be with you, too.” He said.
Your sweet gazes were everlasting. You didn’t want this moment to end. How perfect it would be, you both heard a friend of his counting down to the new year before everyone else followed. Heeseung hadn’t left your eyes and he moved in close enough that you would feel the heat from this chest.
“I know I said I don’t do new year kisses, but I want to kiss you right now.” He confessed, almost hesitating.
“I think we feel the same way.” You played from his words earlier and he was amused. “Can I kiss you too?”
“Since you asked so nicely… Yes.” He was teasing again. It made you laugh before he held an arm behind you and your ring-fingered hand gripped at the front zipper of his jacket. You felt breathless against his body and it’s contradicting how hot you were feeling when chills ran down your back. Heeseung’s nose could almost touch yours when he greeted you, “Happy new year.”
It felt silly to say it before it actually hits midnight and you almost laughed at the thought of it. The countdown was getting louder and your lips beamed. “Happy new year, Heeseung.”
His smile turned into a sweet grin. You could feel his beating heart against your chest when your lips touched. His lips were warm, and they parted so he could give another smooch against yours. That kind of touch ignited sparks from your stomach. You lips brushed along with his and the venomous scent of his cologne made you dizzy. His hand cupped between your ear as he deepened the kiss and gripped your back tighter. You felt his hot breath tickling your cheek, fingers pulling him closer at the collar of his jacket. No one had ever kissed you like this before. He did more than you would, and you wished he wouldn’t stop, so your lips parted and kissed him a bit harder back, just like how he taught you earlier.
The sudden loud cheers around you woke you up before you both pulled away, noses still close together. Your breaths were deeply soft and quiet. You both remained standing, arms still at each other. For a moment, Heeseung felt astonished by the things you were learning from him. It was worth opening his eyes to when he noticed your flushed cheeks. You both shared soft laughs before letting each other go, except your hand. He wanted to hold them all night if possible.
As you both sat back down on your ‘designated’ seats, you had one thing on your mind: you should be doing this every year. Not the kiss because you couldn’t handle yourself, but the thought talk…
Just kidding, maybe both.

New Year’s Eve
Tumblr media
Characters: Steve Rogers x Reader ft. The Avengers, Doctor Strange, Peter Parker, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes (all platonic)
Warnings: None.
Description: It’s December 31. You’ve just returned from a mission. Tony wants to throw a New Years Eve party. And Steve just wants to speak to you for a few minutes.
A/n: Wishing each of you an early Happy New Year! I hope 2023 is filled with happiness and love. Here’s to another year of little stories and imagination running wild x
There was a lot of noise coming from below. You would have been bothered if you hadn’t already been up awake still jumpy from the mission in Wakanda.
The thumps and bumps drew your curiosity and you set off on a journey to see what was happening. Two floors down, you ran into a series of strangers in the tower wearing guest passes. As they walked by, you noticed your favourite spy-turned-Avenger leaning against the kitchen bench.
“What’s with the good looking people at 8am?” You asked.
Natasha was quietly watching Tony sign some documents out on the helipad and sipped on her favourite morning juice.
“Didn’t you hear? Tony wants to have a lavish New Years Eve party tonight.”
A few of the stronger workers were lifting crates marked with ‘warning: explosive’ according to Tony’s instruction.
“And here come the fireworks. Hold this,” Natasha passed you her drink. “I need to move the quinjet before that goes up in flames too.”
You had questions but she left your side before you could voice them. The fridge door closed and Thor walked over with a tub of yogurt in his hands.
“I never understand you mortals. You can court chaos and yet create such beautiful ‘sky fire’.” He said bumping your shoulder. “A party this evening is exciting, is it not?”
“It would be if he hadn’t sprung this out of nowhere.”
Thor looked away from the workers and frowned at you. “Nowhere? Did you not receive the message two days ago on the small voicebox?” The God of Thunder recognised your blank expression and explained himself. “The phone?”
You reached into your back pocket and pulled out your handheld device. Tapping a few button, you realised that the battery had fallen flat. “Crap. It must have run out while I was away.” You realised.
Thor leaned over and touched the screen, sending a small electric current into the device and bringing it back to life. As the screen loaded, you gave a grateful sigh. “You’re like a walking source of energy.”
There were several pings of missed texts and calls that floated to the top of the screen.
29 December 10:50am - 1 missed call from Hawkeye.
29 December 10:56am - (Hawkeye) Text over your room’s access code. I need to hide the Asgardian mead.
29 December 1:21pm - 1 missed call from Thaddeus Ross.
29 December 2:56pm - (Hawkeye) Don’t ignore me.
29 December 2:58pm - (Hawkeye) Your phone’s dead, isn’t it?
30 December 7:22am - 1 missed call from Pepper P.
30 December 10:53am - (Steve) I’ve moved your mission debrief to after the party. Hope you’re keeping safe.
30 December 12:36pm - 2 missed calls from The Raft.
Dismissing them for now, you tapped a few icons to replay the voicemail left by Tony.
“Avengers - it’s time to celebrate the end of the year with flair. I’m hosting a New Years Eve party in two nights at the tower. Food, friends and fireworks. Invitations are going out right now so come dressed to dazzle.”
“What do you suppose he means by ‘dress to dazzle’? Perhaps, Jane will know. I’ve invited her to join us if she’s not too busy. Barton mentioned a tradition of kissing someone at midnight. Hopefully Jane finds me worthy.” Thor hoped.
You groaned internally. The dreaded pressure of kissing someone at midnight was something you never enjoyed. It felt too dramatic for your taste.
“Will you be bringing someone?” The God of Thunder wondered.
Patting his arm, you stepped away. “I’m going for a walk so less people ask me that question.”
Leaving him to watch the workers and enjoy his breakfast, you crossed the room to the elevator. You descended to the lobby where more people wandered about. While walking, you hadn’t noticed the foot of a marble statute poking out of place and accidentally kicked it.
Caught off guard, you cursed while hopping to nurse the temporary pain. Turning around, you found yourself nose-to-box when a hand grabbed yours, pulling you to the side.
“Whoa, easy there.” Steve laughed as he held your arm so you wouldn’t hit the stack of boxes.
“Sorry, I was just - why did we take the statue down?” You asked, looking back at the sculpture.
“Tony wants there to be more space for the crowd to mingle.” Steve replied.
“This party is just getting more elaborate by the second. You sighed. “If I had known it was tonight, I might have stayed in Wakanda for a few more days.”
“Come on, you don’t mean that.”
You didn’t really wish to be away from home on New Years if you could help it.
“No, I don’t.” Placing your hands on your hips, you exhaled a thought. “I had hoped today would be a day of rest. Not party prepping.”
“Actually speaking of the party, if you’re not taking any-”
“Here he is! Just the man I was after.” Tony called out as he appeared from behind the super soldier having taken the stairs. He approached and patted Steve’s shoulder. “I need your help upstairs.” Tony then looked at you.
“And I need your help with the last remaining invitations. FRIDAY hit a small glitch during the send so I’ve texted you the names that were missed.”
Steve glanced at his friend. “Sure thing Tony but I was just-”
“You’ll have plenty of time later. Come on, Cap.”
With Steve on a task with Tony, you looked at your phone screen to read the message he left on your phone.
Stephen Strange, Wong, Peter and May, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes.
The latter two were easy to reach since you were always in touch. You could extend their invites on your way to Bleeker Street.
Wrapping up for the cold weather outside, you caught a cab to the Sanctum Sanctorum. As you were driven, you tried to give Sam a call but reached his voicemail.
“Hi, this is Sam Wilson. I’m not available but leave a message…”
“What are you doing?”
“Recording an outgoing voicemail so people leave a message when I can’t take their call.”
“That’s weird.”
The banter between Sam and Bucky was so enjoyable that you almost forgot to hang up when the tone beeped. You’d try again a little later in the day.
With the traffic being a little heavier, your ride was slow so you went through a few missed calls and called back the time sensitive ones. After the third, you slipped your phone back into your pocket when you noticed that the cab had slowed to a stop. Paying the driver, you stepped out and pulled your coat a little tighter before walking up the stairs.
Knocking twice, you paused on the third when you heard a crash behind the door. Then the wooden panel creaked open and you were pulled inside and landed on a platform that wasn’t part of the usual foyer.
“Y/n! It’s so nice you see you.” Wong welcomed from somewhere above where he stood on a large rock as he wrangled against a large beast.
You waved at him when suddenly the ground you were standing on trembled. At the end of it was a second beast set on fire.
What the hell had you walked into?
It charged towards you until a magical leash fastened around its neck and pulled it away before you were swallowed. Following the thread, you saw the man you were after.
“Is now a bad time?” You called out.
Stephen rolled his eyes. “Does anything about this seem normal to you?”
Looking around, it was hard to answer because the last few times you visited, there was another perilous disaster occurring within the walls.
“Actually, this is a bit of a habit.” You admitted. Stephen sighed and accepted the reply. “I came to invite you to the New Years Eve party tonight. At the tower, if you survive this.”
Stephen grappled with the reigns of his creature as it grew in strength. Wong leapt into the air, opened a portal beneath the feet of his own beast and let it fall through with a growl. He then made his way over to you.
“What time is the party?” He asked.
Stephen groaned. You ignored the sorcerer and addressed his friend. “At seven.”
Wong nodded, happy with the invitation. “I’ll be there.”
You looked up at Stephen. “And you?”
Doctor Strange sighed and cast a hand in your direction with a circling motion. “I think you still have a few more guests to invite.”
That’s when you realised that there was no floor beneath your feet and you fell through a hole only to land on a soft couch.
“Oh my god!” Aunt May cried out as a bowl of popcorn flew into the air.
Peter jumped out from the kitchen brandishing wooden spoons poised for attack. “What? What?”
You cleared out the stray kernels from your hair. “I really hate it when he does that. Oh, hi you two!”
Aunt May calmed her erratic heart and lowered the volume on the television. “Y/n, as much as I enjoy having you over, why don’t you try the door next time?”
You apologised for the suddenness and the mess as you gathered the bowl. Peter set the spoons down and walked over.
“Is something wrong? Does Mr Stark need my help?” He wondered quickly filled with so much hope.
Chuckling, you helped clean up the ruined movie snack from the floor. “Not quite. Actually we’re having a party at the tower tonight and would love for you both to be there if you’re free.”
“A party? With the Avengers?” Peter’s eyes widened, mouth grinning while trying to contain his excitement.
May cleared her throat. “Will Happy be there?”
Her interest in the body guard had not gone unnoticed particularly since Happy always asked you about her. “Oh he’ll be there.” You smirked.
May looked at Peter and then pretended that she wasn’t too excited. “We’ll let you know.”
Thanking them both and apologising once more for the earlier incident, you left their apartment.
Four down, two to go you thought to yourself. There was a buzz from your pocket so you fished out your phone. There was a text message from Clint. Opening it, you read:
Emergency. Pick up blueberries.
Frowning, you texted back while audibly speaking the message. “What happened to the batch I bought?”
Three dots graced the screen and then…
I ate them.
You glanced at the time and knew that the ingredients at the cocktail bar hadn’t been prepared yet. Tony always requested the caterers to do it an hour or so before the event. Luckily there was a good market close to the tower from which you could purchase the fresh produce.
As you walked to the subway and rounded a corner, you managed to get Sam on the line. It would be a great way to let him know of the event. The call was picked up with a familiar bright voice.
“Well if it isn’t my favourite Avenger.” Sam answered.
“Don’t let Cap hear you say that.” You laughed with a small head shake. “Are you home?”
“No, actually I’m visiting a family friend. What’s up?”
“That’s okay. I called for two reasons. Firstly, I found some intel on Zemo’s prison cell. Had to check in a few favours there. And second-”
“There’s a party happening at the Tower?” Sam guessed.
How did he know that? “Was it Steve?”
“You know I don’t reveal my sources.” He teased. “But to ease your mind, I’ll be there.”
“Could you try and get Bucky to come as well? I know Steve would appreciate having you both.”
Sam laughed. “That’s the third time you mentioned Mr Blue Eyes in this conversation and it’s not even 2’o clock. Why you’re not dating the guy is a mystery to me.”
You had made it down to the platform as a train pulled up. “Okay, I won’t mention him again.”
Sam loved to poke at you for fun and it was all done from a place of love. You caught up with the man for a little while longer until your stop and you bid him and the subway adieu. It was a short walk to the market where you collected enough blueberries to cover Clint’s thievery before anyone found out.
When you returned to the tower, you delivered the berries to the bar and let Clint know that the crisis was averted. The tower was getting busier and so you decided to head up to your room to get dressed.
Like any Tony Stark party, he delivered. It was magnificent with lots of familiar and new faces gracing the halls and levels of Avengers Tower. Everyone was dressed up and looked incredible. You caught a glimpse of Peter Parker in the crowd who was taking everything in. Wong managed to seek you out for a short conversation and gave you an apology on Stephen’s behalf for not making it.
After a round through the crowd, you settled at the bar to enjoy a drink with Pepper, Happy and Bruce. Steve was on his way to get some food when he heard your voice.
“I think the kissing tradition on New Years Eve is cute.” Bruce commented.
Happy shrugged. “I don’t know, I think it depends on the person you’re with.”
You set your glass down and pat Happy on the shoulder. “This. See, I think you should only kiss someone on New Years Eve if you’re in love with them or planning to pursue a relationship. What’s the point of kissing if it’s just for fun?”
Pepper laughed as she took a sip. “Don’t knock it until you try it Y/n. There are heaps of strangers here. Why don’t we set you up with one?”
Steve’s stomach flipped at the thought and he entered the conversation circle. “How is everyone doing over here?”
He leaned towards you to pull over a glass and pour himself a drink. You smiled as the rest of the group gave their replies and caught him up to speed on their last topic.
“What do you think Cap?” Happy asked.
“To kiss or not to kiss?” Bruce chimed in with a chuckle.
Steve paused for a few seconds as he thought up a response. “I like romance. I’d imagine each kiss to be special and tell a story.” Steve’s eyes landed on you. “Actually that’s why I wanted to speak to you. I-”
Suddenly, Tony interrupted the group with his presence and a holopad that was flashing red. “Oh boy, we have a major problem.” He said and showed them a newspaper article. “Vibranium was stolen in transit to Wakanda. We need a lock on their trail before it runs cold. Pun intended since the route was in Iceland.”
Happy sighed. “Wow, they picked a hell of a time to strike so close to midnight.”
Steve jumped into Captain America mode almost immediately, shoulders straightened and brow-furrowed. “I can be ready and take the quinjet in ten.”
Bruce set his glass down. “Want me to come with you?”
“Thanks Bruce. But if it’s a simple tailing job, I’ve got it covered. Besides, you should enjoy the night, you’ve earned it.”
Suddenly, the crowd began making their way to the terrace, Thor amidst them when he spotted his friends and called out from the sea of heads.
“Come, my friends. We are about to watch the sky fire!”
Tony unbuttoned his suit jacket with a flare, “It’s my time to shine.” He walked over to Pepper and stretched out his arm for her to take before striding out onto the balcony. Bruce found Natasha and followed her out while Happy caught a glimpse of Peter’s aunt in the crowd and also head in that direction.
You looked at Steve and he seemed a little disheartened. “I’ve been trying to catch you all day and now-”
You placed a hand over his arm and gave a kind rub. “Hey, it’s okay. If it’s not important, it can wait until you’re back. I’ll still be here.” Hearing your name being called outside, you stepped away from the man. “I should go. Can’t miss Tony’s wondrous display.”
Leaving Steve behind for his mission, you joined the Asgardian in the middle of the crowd. He was telling stories about how he and Loki would steal fireworks from each festival and light them up on the bifrost for the people of the lower towns. “...I think our Father knew.”
In the next few minutes, Jane Foster appeared at Thor’s side and exchanged pleasantries until the crowd began to hush and stir as they looked to the sky. Tony’s drones took to the sky in marvellous fashion before they shaped themselves into the countdown numbers.
…5, 4, 3, 2, 1!
The crowd cheered, some even coming from the streets as they watched the pyrotechnics come to life. As fireworks rose and lit up the sky, you felt a kind of magical buzz, lucky to be where you stood.
It was a beautiful sight and you looked at the surrounding crowd. Lips were locking all around and you felt your stomach twist as the feeling of being alone began to settle. It normally never bothered you but this environment felt different. While everyone was distracted, you snaked between the bodies to return inside.
As you crossed the seating arrangement with every intention to call it a night, you barrelled into a very combat-suited Steve. Shouldn’t he be halfway across the sea?
“What are you still doing here? I thought you left for Iceland.”
Steve’s eyes were fixed on you, the gentle twinkle of fireworks reflecting in his blue irises. It was like he was staring into the heart of a jewelled cave - completely mesmerised.
“It’s important.” He said closing the space between you. A hand setting against your waist, Steve leaned forward. His lips ghosting against yours as your eyes closed. “You’re important.”
It was though fireworks were being set off in your body when he pressed his lips against yours. All you could feel was magic, heat, love and you just wanted to melt against him. His warmth, his touch, if you were in a private space you were sure things would have heated up far quickly. Little did you know, Steve was feeling the exact same.
Pulling away reluctantly, Steve rest his head against yours and smiled. “A part of me wishes that I could stay.”
Closing your eyes, you took in a deep breath. “Me too.”
The door from the terrace opened. Tony had walked in to refill his glass and wandered about the bar for a suitable drink when he overheard. The rest of the team also came inside for a break from the party.
“Then why don’t you just go with him?” Tony suggested. “There’s no rule saying that you can’t.”
It was such a simple resolve but you remembered that Steve had turned down Bruce’s offer. You looked at the captain silently asking if he’d like the company.
He smiled. “It would be an honour.”
Tony stood to the side with a wine bottle in his hand as he poured another drink for himself and Pepper, quietly watching you and Steve walk away hand-in-hand towards the hanger bay. Clint grabbed himself some water and took a seat on a high chair.
“Don’t you think they’ll need some back up if vibranium is in play?” He wondered.
Tony nodded, closing the bottle and sipping his drink. “Of course, if the mission was real.”
Thor threw back the last of his Asgardian mead and set his cup on the table (he was learning that the Asgardian custom to break the instrument was frowned upon). “You mean to say that you fabricated a story to…”
“To stop our two closest friends from more pining? You bet I did. God it was giving me whiplash.” Tony confessed. Then he pointed to each member present. “And now you know the truth, you’re all accomplices to the crime.”

Winchester Boy's NYE
A/N: Sorry it's late, I wanted to get it out on the first but I got distracted, I hope you enjoy it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sam & Y/n's NYE Party:
You and Sam got invited to go out on New Year's Eve. You usually don't go anywhere or do anything because of the job, but a little change could be good. Maybe you'll feel normal for once.
"Are you ready?" Sam asks straightening out his suit.
"Wow, you look great!" You squeal looking at him. You put on the finishing touches and look at yourself in the mirror. "Oh god, it's too much isn't it?" You ask, you got a beautiful dress to wear for this evening but it seems so formal and flashy.
"No, no!" Sam walks over to you. "You look amazing. It's not too much, it's perfect." He kisses your forehead.
"I'm so nervous. I haven't been to a party since.." You trail off "Well since I was kid" You chuckle nervously.
"We're going to have a great time. You look amazing and everyone is going to be obsessed with my girlfriend."
"Oh stop" You smile shyly.
"Come on." He holds out his hand for you. You grab it and smile at him.
"We're going to have a great start to the New Year" You kiss his cheek. "I love you"
"I love you too, Y/n" He kisses you sweetly before opening the front door for you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dean & Y/n's NYE Party:
"How are you liking it?" Dean wraps his arms around your waist.
"I'm loving it" You smile at him, you look around and see people laughing, dancing, drinking, and acting dumb. "I haven't been to a party in, I don't even know how long." He smirks at you.
"I know, I wanted you to start the New Year off right" Dean moves closer to you. "You look fantasic in that dress by the way" He says, his face getting closer to you, you stiffen up. "It would look so much off of you" He whispers in your ear.
"Dean" You smile at him shaking your head.
"Okay, okay" He backs off a little, he's still holding you by your waist.
"I can't believe no one's noticed us yet" You chuckle, you weren't invited to this party, you and Dean crashed it because you got a new dress and you had no plans. He decided to take you around town and to a bar. You got a little tipsy and decided to crash a party for New year's. He was on board with you, he always is.
"I know, it's kind of funny"
"We'll stay for a little longer" You say kissing him quick
"Or we could leave now" He winks at you.
"No, Dean" You roll your eyes laughing.
"No, no you're right" He says quietly and he definitely doesn't mean it. Dean follows you through the crowd, dancing, smiling, and talking to random random people with you. He truly tries anything and everything he can to make you happy.

The urge to write a little NYE one-shot where the reader finds themselves alone in a coffee shop, all dressed up and nowhere to go and Joel is the last barista there for the night and he’s been watching the reader the whole time they’ve been sitting there and eventually goes to sit by them and asks why they’re in a coffee shop on NYE all dressed up
And he finds out it’s because they feel especially lonely this time of year but they thought that getting all dressed up for the holiday would make them feel better when in reality they just want to go home and rot away in their bed (same) so then Joel suggests that they write out their resolutions for the new year (knowing that it’s cheesy) and then he tells the reader it’s alright that they’re comfortable being a homebody but it’s also okay if they want more than that.
Then it ends with him asking the reader to go and get a drink with him at midnight 😭 and him saying no one deserves to be alone on New Years Eve, darlin.’”

new year kiss series: jay
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
jay x you; established relationship, fluff
summary: jay sneaks you out to see the new years fireworks downtown… if you both actually make it in time words: 2k warnings: none
Tumblr media
“Jay, what are you doing here?”
His signature smirk painted on his face. He was really hoping it would be you who would open the door after he rang the doorbell.
“I thought you were at Jake’s?” You continued, astonished to find him here. There’s just too many things on your mind right now that you never thought he’d be here.
“I was, then I thought of you and realized I miss you.” Jay’s head tilted slightly, as if he was shy. His smirk still stained when he handed the bouquet of your favorite colors that was hidden behind him all this time. “And I wanted to give you this.”
Your face smushed up before you realized you were making a loud cry. You jumped onto him in a tight hug as he almost stumbled behind him. His arm latched behind you as his scent rushed through your nose. It was such a comforting smell that your lips touched his neck under your hidden features. His hugs were always warm. This was a moment you craved for and you wished it could last forever.
“You didn’t have to.” Your words mumbled through his skin. It tickled him as he laughed quietly.
“Are you going to accept it or not?” Jay asked. He could stop smiling at how happy you were and hoped you would look at him and show him that lovely look of yours.
“Always.” You smiled at him, tears in your eyes when you let him go. Your arms hung at his shoulders before you collected the bouquet into your hands. “Thank you, Jay.”
Jay leaned in a little with a cheek close to you. His eyes avoided your and his lips moved to one side. “And what am I going to get in return?”
You laughed quietly at his wittiness and pecked a kiss onto his cute cheek. You both shared soft breaths under the little light by your front door together before you both heard someone behind you.
“Oh, Jay! Is that you?” One of your uncles came by with one of your 6-month old baby cousins in his arms. “Why don’t you come inside? The party is just getting started.”
“You mean, it’s been 4 hours, Uncle!” You laughed as you corrected him. The party started when everyone arrived, you thought.
“Yeah, you’re kind of right.” He laughed and continued to invite Jay in. “Well, you should still come inside. There’s plenty of food that hasn’t been served yet. Oh, besides that, let me give you a toast.”
Right when you were about to reject the offer for Jay, Jay was already ahead of you.
“No no, I’m okay. I’m actually gonna go get some more wine with (Y/N) and bring back for the celebration.” Jay’s smile could lie when your eyes widened at him. He could tell your eyes were cursing at him but he ignored it and continued, “We will actually be right back.”
“Oh, okay! Come quick though, it’ll be the new year soon!” Your uncle exclaimed then Jay waved at him after taking your hand. You both walked to his car before your uncle headed back inside and whispered to himself, “It’s only champagne though.”
“Are we really going to go get wine right now?” You asked when you got inside his car.
“No.” He started the engine and turned to you. He had the exact same thought as you when he side-eyed with an obvious smile. “I think it’s a really bad time to go there now.”
“Oh my god, I didn’t think you’d want to fight for the last bottle at the liquor store.” You sighed in relief. Your words had him grinning before you asked him, “Where are we going, anyway?”
“Watch the fireworks downtown.” Jay leaned over to pull your seatbelt.  “Because I know you wouldn’t want to be more overwhelmed than you are now.”
For that second, you felt clouded by the warmth of his body over you. You wondered how he could see your face when he wasn’t even looking at you. How could he tell your brain was occupied with all of these family events for the holiday, on top of your busy work schedule after accepting a new one last month? He’s such a wonder, every single time.
After clicking your seatbelt on, his eyes laid on you. He was smiling still when he saw your cheeks burning up. To quickly stop him from staring, your arms wrapped around him under his opened jacket as you hid your face in his chest.
“Oh Jay, I’m so grateful.”
He chuckled softly, finding you cute while his face was flushed by the sudden hug. A cupped your head in a pat before he pulled back, “Okay okay, we should get going or we’re going to miss it.”
He moved back into his seat, set his seatbelt on and drove away as you hugged the bouquet on your lap.
It wasn’t even long until you both were downtown. The problem? Traffic. You peaked up a couple of times, realizing how congested the streets were. Slowly moving from one street to another felt like hours. You leaned back into your seat and turned to him.
“How was Jake’s party?” You asked because your family party was still lingering in your mind.
“It was kinda crazy. You know how much my friends love singing.” He shook his head.
“That’s right.” You leaned close to him in excitement. “I haven’t seen you sing in a while.”
“Yeah?” He seemed nervous, but rather, he felt a bit sad because you both haven’t been able to meet as much this month because of your new work and because of how busy your family is when it comes to the holidays. After you leaned back into your seat, he rested an arm over the wheel and leaned toward you. His smile was there when he asked, “You want me to sing right now?”
“No,” You smiled, almost as if you were teasing him. “I’d rather see you being your silly self singing in private.”
Jay grinned along, knowing that you were thinking of those times when you slept over at his place where he’d start singing in the kitchen in his pajamas in the morning. Perhaps he could ask you to stay for the night tonight.
“I won’t return you home, then.”
Jay’s words caught you off guard. He noticed. The distanced traffic sounds filled the air before he continued.
“I don’t want to send you home after tonight because I know how much it means to you to kiss tonight. And there’s so many new things to do together in the new year. They don’t even have to be new things.” Jay confessed, even though you both have had meaningful kisses before in the last year of dating. To you, kisses meant commitment and trust, and Jay wanted to make sure what he’s choosing to do would fulfill that. He remembered you saying how romantic it would be to start the new year with a kiss, and you didn’t realize it until your cheeks burned up. He turned to look at the still-red light, a pause in his speech before he continued. “I really can’t wait to pick you up from work, take you out on more dates, and especially wake up next to you everyday...”
It sounded impossible currently but Jay suddenly turned to you, “...by the end of the new year?”
“What do you mean?” You asked. Your heart was racing. You had a clue of what he meant, you just needed clarity. In so many ways, you felt that you were lacking to even accept what this may be, but you still yearn for the love you deserve, the love that Jay has been giving you since.
Jay set the car to park and picked at the pocket inside his jacket. He pulled out a ring, but he didn’t hand it to you yet. Your eyes lit up at his hand before you met his eyes.
“What I mean is, I promise you the future of us. Whatever comes to us, I feel that we can overcome it no matter how hard things are. I will be there for you, even if we are apart for a moment. Just like how we are now.” He reminisced of how hard it was to see you this month. You could sense that he never wanted this to happen again when he took your hand into his. His hand gripped yours tightly. You wanted to kiss him right then, as he continued. “So this, I promise you, I am committed to you, and want to be by your side for a long time.”
“Forever?” You asked, and it made Jay smile wider.
“Forever.” He confirmed.
Jay slid the ring through your finger before you noticed the similar ring in his finger. He kind of wiggled his hand so you could see it, as if he was teasing. He was so happy when your smile grew.
The countdown could be heard from your car before you both realized how close midnight was.
“Looks like we won’t make it in time.” Jay said in disappointment, but what else could you both really do? He wouldn’t be able to move his car unless other cars are moving. You squeezed his hand in yours so he could bring his attention to you.
“I prefer this.” You confessed quietly before you leaned closer to him. “With no one else around, just you and me in one place.”
Your other hand cupped his cheek, a soft rub tickled his smirk against your palm. Gazing into his loving eyes, there was nothing else that could matter. Your eyes began to tear up, thinking about how considerate and thoughtful he was of your small meaningless words. He truly meant the world to you when your lips curved. “Jay, I love you, sooo much that I could steal all of the stars in the universe if you ask.”
“You don’t need to, because you already have.” His thumb rubbed at your locked lands, getting lost in the galaxy eyes of yours. With all of his heart, he whispered, “I love you too, (Y/N).”
Jay’s voice sounded loud through his actions when his hand reached behind your neck. The countdown hit close to zero as his eyes stayed stuck at your lips. He pulled you to his lips, as if it was such a desirable taste, something he longed for since you both saw each other less. His hand was steady behind you, and if you knew how hot his body felt to see you after a long time, he’d probably drink you away. He missed the feeling of your soft lips brushing against his, yours the feeling of his gentleness of his crawling hands and tease of the tongue pushing through your kiss. In a short loop of colliding, you remembered how satisfying it was to crave him and to get him. You were out of breath when you both pulled away.
Your eyes stayed closed as your foreheads touched, feeling the fireworks in the sky mimicking the sparks in your bodies. Almost a minute later when your hearts calmed, your eyes opened and smiles were shared while the flashing lights continued.
"Happy new year." He whispered like before.
He held your promised hand still when you greeted him back, then he pressed a kiss onto it.
Just as you said, Jay would steal all of the stars for you too, even if it would take all night to get to your home. In this moment, he’s with you and you’re with him. Nothing else really mattered.

Step into Christmas - S.F.K.

Warnings: angst, mentions of loss of loved ones, and dealing with the emotions of the holidays

"Oh! Look at these little trees! They'd look so cute on your mantle!" you squealed, grabbing the small box set of three flocked and glittered mini pine trees from the shelf in front of you. You looked them over and turned to Sam, who was leaning against the handle bar of the shopping cart, looking less than enthused. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, babe," he assured with a sigh, flicking the shimmery tinsel in front of him with a bored expression on his face. "I'm ready to be home, all the different, bright colors are starting to hurt my eyes."
"Oh, yeah, we have been out for a while, huh?" you smiled at him tenderly, placing the trees in the cart and moving to stand next to him as he pushed the cart towards the checkouts. "Do you want to stop and get something to eat on the way home?"
"Sure." Sam shrugged noncommittally. You popped up onto your tiptoes, pressing a quick, chaste kiss to his cheek as you waited in line to checkout with all your new decorations. You spoke with the cashier as they rang up your items, gushing over the cute outdoor light ups you'd picked out. Once you had paid, Sam helped you load your car up with and he drove it back to his house, letting you be the passenger princess and play Christmas music on the radio.
You could feel the air shifting more and more, a feeling of anxiety bubbling up in you as Sam stayed quiet on the ride home. You chalked it up to the fact the two of you not having eaten much that day, but even after stopping for a quick bite at a vegetarian restaurant, the feeling persisted. You took a few silent, deep breaths, calming your own nerves. Sometimes Sam was just quiet, and you knew he loved you more than the breath in his lungs, as he would profess in your mirror as you brushed your teeth or did your hair nearly every morning.
"Okay, I'm going to start putting stuff up and away." you told him softly once things were brought inside. Sam nodded, giving you a soft smile.
"Do you want any help?" he offered. You could see in his eyes he was only offering to be nice. You shook your head, wrapping your arms around his waist and looking up at him.
“Go do your thing, I’m gonna make the North Pole look like the dollar store.” Sam pressed a kiss to your forehead with a slight roll of his eyes. He patted your bottom gently as you moved away to the living room, picking up a bag that had some new ornaments in it and skipping to the tree, cooing happily at Rosie as she followed you, tail wagging.
Sam tried to ignore the soft beat to your cheerful music downstairs, but he'd already had enough of the holiday. You had been so adamant since Thanksgiving about decorating, always detouring to the decorations aisles at the stores and showing him every glittery bauble. It was bad enough the holiday was so commercialized, but now it felt like it was being shoved down his throat before he was ready to admit the year was almost over. He sighed, closing the book he was trying to read and decided to go grab a snack, chalking his irritableness up to being hungry again.
As he made his way down the stairs, he became more irritated at the boxes that were strewn about, and as he ruminated over the mess you'd made in his home, he tripped over one of the small light up reindeer you had taken out, stepping on the prongs and inhaling sharply. His hand slammed against the wall with a thwacking noise as he reached out to balance himself, startling you and Rosie.
"Sam?" you came around the corner, eyes wide in fear at what you might find. "Are you okay?!" Sam sighed and nodded silently as he waited for the pain in his foot to subside.
"We're done decorating for christmas, okay? We're done." he shook his head now, sending you a look."
"Oh. Okay, I'm sorry, I was going to move those in a few minutes. I didn't think you'd come back downstairs so soon."
"It's whatever. Just clean this stupid stuff up. I didn't even want any of it." you felt a small pang in your chest.
"Oh, I thought you liked my decorating for Christmas. You were fine going to the stores to get it with me."
"I just don't understand why all of this stupid crap means so much to you! All we need is a tree, and some lights, not all of this shit!" Sam snapped and waved his arms around his living room exasperatedly. Your heart cracked, all of the work you'd put into the decorating felt wasted within an instant. Tears welled in your eyes and you tried to blink them away, as regret and shame crossed Sam's face as he realized how he snapped. You set down the small, plushie gnome you had been placing on the top of his piano to keep it out of Rosie's strong jaw, moving away from it and him and picking up your keys. "Baby, please, I'm sorry."
"I'm just gonna go home, okay? I think we need some space. I'll come get all of this crap out later." you moved around his arms as he tried to stop you from leaving. You got into your car and didn't bother adjusting the seat, stretching your legs slightly to reach the pedals and backing out of his driveway, and going to your own apartment.
You had already set up a little light up tree in your living room, leaving it on while you were gone and felt a little bit better once you saw it's glow in the winter mid-afternoon dusk.
You laid on your couch, fighting back the tears. All you wanted to do was have a perfect first Christmas with Sam, and now it felt like it was all ruined. You finally let all the feelings you'd been keeping at bay flood in, missing your family and wishing that they were still there with you. You turned your face into the couch pillow and let the tears flow.
🎄🎄🎄
“Hey I need your help.” Sam sighed as soon as his older brother picked up the phone. Jake raised an eyebrow. “I fucked up with Y/N.” Jake sighed, running a hand over his face.
“What happened?” Sam explained all of the things that had happened the past few days, the decorating, the music, the movies and shows. Jake listened patiently, and when Sam was done, he took a deep breath. “Sam, you realize this is her first Christmas, he favorite holiday, without her family, right? Her parents are gone, she doesn’t have any siblings. She’s probably trying to fill a void and not make you worry at the same time.”
“Shit.” Sam swallowed, a pit in his stomach. “I didn’t even realize…I’m awful. I fucked up, big time.”
“Yeah, you really did.” Jake’s jaw was sent, disappointment in his brother evident. You’d been close to Jake, since you had trouble sleeping too, and had many late night heart to hearts with him over the past few years. So to say Sam hurting you upset him was an understatement. “You said she left, did she go to her apartment?”
“I think so.” Sam nodded. “She won’t answer my texts or calls.”
“Deservedly so.” Jake huffed. “I can try calling her.” Sam’s eyes were scanning the decorations around the living room, the lawn ones still in their boxes.
“No, go get her.” Sam said. “Bring her back home. I’m gonna make this up to her.”
“How?” Jake asked skeptically, seeing a slightly crazy look in his baby brothers eye.
“You remember Bronner’s, back home?”
“Yeah?”
“My house is gonna put it to shame.” Sam hung up, immediately dialing his best friend Danny, and texting his other brother Josh, explaining to them what happened and, after being scolded by both, got them to agree to his plan. Within an hour, Danny and Josh were at Sam’s, lugging boxes from their cars in.
Across the town, Jake was knocking on the door of your apartment. You dragged yourself from your position in the couch, peeking through the peephole and undoing the lock before opening the door slightly.
“Hey love.” Jake gave you a soft smile, and you swallowed down your sadness to give him one back.
“Hi Jake.” You opened the door more and gestured for him to come inside. He thanked you quietly and you shut the door behind him, smoothing your palms on your jeans. “Sam sent you?”
“Technically.” Jake admitted. “I would’ve come after he told me what happened anyway.” you bit the inside of your cheek, crossing your arms over your chest. “I’m not here for him, though. I want to make sure you’re okay.”
“I’ll be fine.” you sniffled. Jake shook his head. “Really, it was just a little lovers spat.” Jake nodded, conceding.
“Well, I’m starving, and I’d love some company for dinner.” he smirked good-naturedly. “Wanna join me?” you thought it over, knowing if you didn’t go with your friend, he’d order in and stay with you anyway. “Come on, don’t make me eat soup alone at a diner.”
“Sure. Let me get my coat.”
🎄🎄🎄
“Hey! Watch out Rosie!” Danny gently tugged the dog out of the way of the light up inflatable snowman Josh was plugging in. “Go on, get back inside.”
“I think we need more green lights.” Sam called, standing towards the road and looking over his front yard.
“We cleaned out the store of all their lights, so I don’t know where you’re gonna get ‘em.” Josh called back. Sam frowned at his brother and sighed. “I think we’ve done everything.” Josh stepped next to Sam, glancing over the home. “If we do anything else you’re gonna blow a fuse.”
“A fuse is a small price to pay to make her happy.” Josh set his mouth in a straight line.
“You know this is just a bandaid, right?” Josh asked quietly. “You’re going to have to have a real talk about what’s going on.”
“I know.” Sam nodded. “But I need to make her know I do appreciate everything she’s done, and why she's done it.” Josh clapped Sam’s shoulder.
“Well, every twinkle light in the tri-county area should be a good start.”
“Jake’s on his way!” Danny announced, jogging over from where he had hung lights on one of the small oak trees in the yard. “He took her to dinner and said he’d help her grab some things from here, so they should be here soon.”
“Shit okay.” Sam began to scramble, checking lights and making sure everything looked good, and the inflatables were facing properly. He ran inside, ripping off the button down shirt he had sported all day and pulled on his white cable knit sweater, your favorite of his. You always snuggled and hugged him more when he wore it.
When Jake’s car pulled in the driveway, Sam practically leapt out the door, hearing Josh and Danny greet you and Jake.
“What happened here?” he heard you ask, a slight tone of awe in your voice as you took in the lights. You were stunned, looking up at everything that had happened since you left earlier in the afternoon.
“The Grinch’s heart grew three sizes today.” Josh smirked, nodding to the small walkway from the driveway to the front door. Your smile fell a bit, knowing Sam was waiting up there for you. “Go on, take in the splendor of your winter wonderland.”
You gave him a soft smile as he ushered you forward, and you took a few hesitant steps towards the pathway. You glanced back quickly, catching Jake’s eyes. He gave you a supportive nod, and you took a deep breath and moved forward again. Sam had completely covered his entire home and yard with lights, and you felt your eyes prickle with tears. You laughed at the Santa peeking out from an outhouse, and aww’d at the light up golden retriever wearing a Santa hat and holding a present by the bow in its mouth. The bushes were covered with multicolored net lighting and bright blue icicle lights dangled from the edge of the roof. You looked up, seeing Sam standing in front of the front door, wringing his hands anxiously. He gave you a beaming smile, albeit one tinged with guilt and a little shame. You made it all the way to the bottom step before you stopped, looking up at him with tears welling in your eyes.
“I’m sorry.” “I’m so sorry!” You both apologized at the same time. Sam’s brow furrowed as he stepped down to greet you.
“What are you sorry for?” Sam shook his head. “I was a complete and utter asshole, I didn’t even realize what this holiday meant to you, especially now.” you went to wipe a spilled tear away but Sam beat you to it.
“I should’ve just told you what I was feeling.” you admitted. “To be honest, I didn’t realize how over the top I was going until you pointed it out.”
“You’re not the only one who can go over the top.” Sam smirked, gesturing out to the yard.
“You did all of this for me?” you whispered, afraid your voice would crack if you spoke above that. Sam grinned.
“I had some helpers.” Sam nodded to the driveway, where three heads quickly ducked out of view behind the corner of the garage. “I did the inside myself though. It’s more cozy.”
“Sam, this is crazy and wonderful.” Sam reached out, cupping your face with one of his large hands and you leaned into it, his strong palm cradling your cheek delicately. “You didn’t have to do all of this. I just…after my mom passed, I kept thinking, this is it, this is the last Christmas I’ll have with my dad. And last years really was. I thought all the awfulizing and worrying and anxiety had prepared me to be without them. But it didn’t. And I just tried to do my best to not feel their absence, I guess. But instead it pushed you away.”
“You shouldn’t have to carry that alone, love.” Sam’s plush lips fell to a slight frown. “And I’m sorry I’ve been shit at helping you carry it. But from here on out, I’m going to do my part completely. For as long as you’ll have me, I’ll carry whatever you need me to.” Tears were spilling down your cheeks, dripping onto your shirt and pooling into his palm as he held your face still, his free arm wrapping around your waist and holding you close. “If that means turning my house into a landing strip every Christmas, I’ll be up there hanging lights on the roof all day and night until they’re perfect for you.” you chuckled and shook your head.
“That’s a lot.” you smiled up at him with a sniffle. Sam smiled back. “We don’t have to do this every year…but I do want to keep the outhouse Santa.”
“It’s yours, baby.” Sam laughed. He was about to say something else, but was cut off by Danny’s disembodied voice.
“Look up!” it called from around the garage. You and Sam both looked up at the same time, seeing a ball of mistletoe hanging by a bright red satin ribbon above your heads.
“Now this is a Christmas tradition I like.” Sam smirked down at you endearingly. He adjusted his hand that was on your face, letting his fingers slide back into you hair a bit as you leaned your face up to his. He asked softly if he could kiss you, and you answered with a resounding yes. As soon as his soft lips touched your own, you felt your heart strum and a warm feeling spread through your body. The only word in your mind was “home”. After a few moments enjoying the mistletoe kiss, you parted, both of you smiling at each other sappily. “Let’s get you inside before we freeze into ice statues together.”
“Wait,” you paused. “I know we have some talking to do, but they worked so hard with you. We should invite them in for a hot cocoa and some cookies, don’t you think?” Sam gave you a soft smile and nod. You turned away, hopping down the stairs and jogging down the walkway. The three brothers that had been hiding behind the garage quickly made themselves look busy, like they weren’t watching you and Sam kiss and makeup. “Very inconspicuous. Incredibly nonchalant. Now get your asses in the house so we can make some cocoa.”
“Oh, we couldn’t impose.” Josh feigned politeness before booking it for the front door, shouting to Sam that he’d better have stocked up on oatmilk. Danny followed him and Jake gave your shoulder a squeeze as he passed you, a happy smile tugging at his lips.
“I’m rooting for you two.” he said quietly as you walked with him up the walkway. “But if you ever need help kicking his ass, I’ll be there.” you chuckled and patted him on the back.
“I’ll be taking you up on that one day, I know it.” You stopped next to Sam as he let Jake inside ahead of him, and nodded for you to go through. You stood under the mistletoe again and crooked your finger, beckoning him over with a sly smirk on your face. Sam grinned and in two large steps he was in front of you, arms wrapping around your torso and lips crashing onto yours.
“Merry Christmas, lovely.” Sam whispered against your lips. You smiled into his kisses, squeezing his body to yours.
“Merry Christmas, Sam.”

there were two sides of me when i read scythe for my english class recently
one side that was invested in the characters and intricacies of the story
and the other side that just thought "if i had to become a scythe could i convince the high blade to let me have bill nye the science guy as my patron historic"
