To @porshaolayiwola thank you for this.
Our names are sacred. Our names are songs. Our names are declarations and prayers.
This is one of those micro-aggressions that ain’t so micro. It needs to stop.
As @uzoaduba said when she told a story about wanting to shorten her name, her mother replied “if they can learn to say Tchaikovsky or Dostoyevsky,” they can learn to say your name.
[If you're interested in DIYing them, note that the vast majority of them end in Nen, or La/Lä. Not all, but most! Nen is like the staple last name additive. Like in many other languages, they're based around nature, place names and various (old) occupations.]
Korhonen
Kouvola (place name)
Laatikainen
Sorsala (has the word Duck)
Törmä (Nature word)
Keränen
Moilanen
Rantasalo (two nature words, one of which references the forest and the other the beach)
hey pals !!! below the cut you can find a list containing ( # 50 ) last names to use for your characters . some of these names i found on google and the rest are just random ones my head is compiled of . please like / reblog if you found these helpful !
I’ve noticed in fallout theres a lot of characters that go by their last names or titles alone. it kinda makes sense, in the wasteland theres just more title oriented jobs that people tend to pick up. more military and secular organisations with titles and formalities surrounding names. but theres also lots of characters without an active or previous title that just go by their last name anyway. it seems to be apart of the culture. (or maybe its an American thing or something thats inspired from the same things that inspired fallout).
But I think about it sometimes, and I just think how weird it is. personally, unless their last name was a derivative- it just feels weird to call people anything else but their first name. And I internally cringe, because if I was plopped into the world of fallout with no prior knowledge and if for example Hancock was like “welcome to good neighbour, I’m mayor john Hancock”, from that point forward I would only call him john. I don’t think it wouldn’t matter how much i’d hear people call him ‘johnny’, ‘Hancock’ or ‘Mayor Hancock’. it feels superficial and strange to me to call someone by their last name unless they ask you to- and I cant help but feel like some other people might agree?
cringing cause I would totally call Boone- Craig. and he would tell me to stop.
has anyone else thought about this? where is this from? is it actually a very American thing?
Another entry for the Log of Strange Mid-Transition Experiences: I've started getting really bad dysphoria around my deadname and masculine titles like "mister," but I'm still not out at work, so I've started signing emails and notes with just my last name, no title or first name or anything. From the inside, it's the only way to navigate the situation, but from the outside I probably seem like some kind of insufferable egotist who wants to be seen as an intellectual giant known by last-name alone like Shakespeare or Newton.
The half-fae girl was sitting above a piece of paper that she was supposed to sign for important reason. She had already written down the name she has always know in cursive, on the dotted line sat "Alcestris". The name she was given by the Draconias because she forgot her own, the name she always claimed as her own and never even trying to find out her original name. The new one felt like a phoenix reborn from its ashes, a new start detached from where she came from. She never had a last name because she never really belonged anywhere, she didn't need one. She didn't belong into any of the families. She was just Alcestris. The lost one, the black sheep. But now it feels so empty without a last name. Somewhere to associate herself.
,,Zigvolt."
A deep familiar voice suddenly chimed in behind her. She turned her head to look over her shoulder, spotting the figure of the now retired soldier she knew all so well. Baul. Or to her..dad
,,What?"
,,Write Zigvolt. As your last name."
,,Are you sure? I mean..am I even fit to wear that name you're so proud of?"
She knew how much of a high-regard he held his family name and she understood. She was someone else's child, not his on biological terms. But that's not how he saw it.
,,You're one of us now. You're part of the family. You are a Zigvolt."
Her heart warmed at that. Does that mean she's finally accepted somewhere? That she belongs? And it doesn't even sound too bad.
Alcestris Zigvolt
It's got a ring to it or maybe she's just imagining it.
idk if im the only person but i absolutely despise trying to come up with last names. first names are so fun but last names can suck my ass. anyway here's the absolutely best source for last names i have ever found (also great for first names too)
Do you have an unpopular opinion about shameless or gallavich
Hey anon! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
I believe I've only seen one post about it a long time ago (and I think it was an anon ask but don't quote me on it) but it been thinking about this post for such a long time that I needed to make one myself -
I think Mickey changes his last name to Gallagher, and here's why:
Because Mickey has been a Gallagher for years. Ian had his back more than the Milkovichs ever did. Ian is his fucking (partner, lover,) family. you know?
Mickey liked a lot of traditional stuff about their wedding / marriage and I think he would like to share a last name. Since both of their last names are long... they decide to keep it simple. And the gallavich thing is too cringy for them.
Have you seen how smitten they look when they call each other 'husband'? Those two possessive sappy motherfucker would love it. Mickey loves being Ian's, Ian loves knowing Mickey is family in every way.
Milkovichs are known from being involved with illegal shit (remember the Paula comment? I also think that why Mickey got 15 years) and Mickey wants to distance himself from that. Him and Ian are trying to build a semi legal life together. 'Milkovich' is just adding to the stigma of southside ex-con he already has to deal with.
After Terry dies, Mickey wants to get rid of anything his father gave him. With Mandy gone, Colin and Iggy ran away a long time ago... he doesn't really have anyone but Sandy from his family. So no real attachment to it.
The Gallaghers are his fucking family. He might bitch about them all the time but they truly are his family and I think it would feel right for him. It took him no time to fit right in the Gallagher house, building relationships with all of Ian's siblings. By the time they get married he's feeling more at home than ever, even after years of being gone.
I don't think Ian would ever want to / feel comfortable calling himself a Milkovich. A. because of Terry and all the horrible things he did B. he never fit in with Mickey's family and C. because Gallaghers have a weird attachment to their last name, "we're Gallaghers" is a part of their personality. D. it would make Mickey's tattoo even weirder.
extra point- I don't headcanon them having their own kids, but possibly getting custody of Franny and possibly fostering kids when they're older. I think having one last name might make them feel more like a family.
That's pretty much it, I think. I might add to it later on. Thank you for the question, anon! I'm happy to hear your opinions though!
I have a character named Arthur that currently has no last name. He comes from a small town, and works at his family’s trucking company. It’s difficult to describe, but something almost whimsical or even unmistakable when heard. Like that good old small town gossip about him using just his last name. Something oddly, magic sounding, but sticking to that small town name type of thing. So sorry for rambling, he’s just difficult to describe! Thanks! ^^
I realized that not only is it depressing that "mother's maiden name" is commonly a security question for institutions as important as one's banking account, the implication being that no one knows the last name a woman had her whole life before she was married and had children, but this usage of the mother's maiden name as a security question further deprives the mother, the woman, of her past identity and humanity. Not only is her past ripped from her during the process of marriage, where she must abandon her family name and take on her husband's, her family name is then held hostage for the security of others. She is not allowed her whole self, her past must be kept hidden away and forgotten, for she is to be objectified into lock and key.
Percy marries Jason and takes the surname "Grace".
What is your opinion?
"Percy Grace"? Nah
"Jason Jackson"? Its giving Jackson 5 (in a bad way)
I think if they were to get married, theyd have to either keep their own names or hyphenate. Theyre such big softies they'd probably hyphenate tbh. "Percy Jackson-Grace" and "Jason Jackson-Grace" have nice rings to them.
Now, I know you intended this as a Jercy post, but I also need to consider some of my other ships:
Percy and Annabeth
❌️ Percy Chase
❌️ Annabeth Jackson
✅️ Percy Jackson-Chase
✅️ Annabeth Jackson-Chase
Jason and Reyna
So I actually went down a whole rabbithole figuring out Spanish naming conventions. But from my understanding, people typically dont change their last names when they get married, so Reyna would probably keep hers. I could see Jason changing his to match hers, tho, so something like:
❌️ Reyna Grace
✅️ Reyna Ramírez-Arellano
✅️ Jason Grace
✅️ Jason Ramírez-Arellano
Jason could also hyphenate his last name further?? Maybe?? But like, lmao no.
❌️ Jason Ramírez-Arellano-Grace
From my understanding, when people with Spanish last names have kids, the kid would then have a combined version of their names, like this:
So if Jason and Reyna had a baby called, idk, Lily, the kids name could be:
❌️ Lily Grace
❌️ Lily Ramírez-Arellano-Grace
✅️ Lily Grace-Arellano
I also think "Lily Ramírez-Grace" and "Lily Grace-Ramírez" sound good, but thats not consistent with the naming conventions.
Also, just for fun, because I am basically a 5-year old shoving their barbies together and going "Kiss!":
❌️ Reyna Chase
✅️ Reyna Ramírez-Arellano
✅️ Annabeth Chase
✅️⚠️ Annabeth Ramírez-Arellano
(Tbh I think that if they got married they would do the lesbian power couple move of just keeping their names)
Jason and Annabeth wouldnt get married because they hate each other lol. And Percy and Reyna would only get married if they other two died and they were both unfortunately single and mad about it.
