Today I encountered the artwork of a German expressionist painter, who was killed during WWI. He painted animals most of the time, and when asked "Why animals all the time?" he replied that he found them to be so much nicer than most humans he knew.
Immediately I felt a kinship with him. It doesn't take romanticizing or idealizing the natural world in order for me to come to this feeling about us.
I prefer my own, absolutely solitary (from other humans) company, 99.9% of the time, and the company of my dogs, and being in nature observing other animals. That is what brings me peace and restores me.
That being said, I know some absolutely wonderful, kind, generous people. I see so many people who do good things, and who care about the way they live. I adore these people, and they bring me joy and hope and help make life so rewarding. They don't have to be incredibly numerous for one to appreciate how beautiful the human animal can be.
So I'm not pessimistic about us generally. Although I will admit, I'm completely 50/50 on whether or not we have what it takes to remain a viable species. The cooperation it would take seems like a formidable obstacle.
But I don't idealize us either. In my own estimation, one very serious challenge we face now, is that we are wild, displaced, confused animals residing in our luxurious concrete, air conditioned, and lighted cages of our own making. I know I certainly enjoy the safety and comfort of home and knowing where my meals will come, and I don't want to live at other times in human history, but the irony of our current conditions externally versus our psychological strain at being isolated from nature is not lost on me. Find our balance is crucial for our individual and collective well-being.
The complexities that have developed with the evolution of our prefrontal cortex and it's mingling with our reptilian brains have resulted in some stunning intellectual, emotional and psychological phenomena. It's incredible how comfortable so many people are, compared to what they would have been even a few hundred years ago, and yet we still wrestle with our own technological entrapments.
It's also interesting to me that I've met so many people, who have expressed to me, Franz Marc's (1880-1916) sentiment - that other animals are nicer. "Nice" is probably not the best word, but I think we all know what we mean when we use it. I think what bothers so many people about humans are the capacity for deceit, lies, mass destruction, rudeness, meanness, and psychological issues that seem to make some people lash out against many others.
Those are just my thoughts after seeing the work of Franz Marc this morning, and his animal paintings. Isn't it amazing what art an do?
Pictured here is an African elephant that I photographed in Tanzania a few years ago. African elephants are magnificent beings, who have demonstrated the same capacity for strong familial bonds, just like us.
I'd like to help foster a world in which we humans live better alongside non-human cohabitants of this precious Earth, one thing we for certain all have in common, and all ultimately rely on.
