2000's and Beyond: Modern Fic

In this iteration of Fic History, we’re going to be exploring the fic culture in mega-fandoms from the early 2000’s and beyond. That’s a big field to cover, I know, so each section is probably going to be a bit less detailed than usual in order to make things easier to digest. To begin, we’re starting with:

Harry Potter

I think it goes without saying that the HP fandom is probably the fandom of the 21st century. No book series has become so ubiquitous as HP, and there are still more HP fics on FF.net than from any other fandom. Since HP was published when the internet already existed, most of the fandom’s fics were published online, although a few printed fanzines were created. HP fic is also extremely varied, most likely due to the wide cast of characters and length of time covered by canon lore. You could find fic on anything from coffee shop AUs of the Hogwarts founders to explorations of the main trio’s children when they eventually attended Hogwarts. Like most fandoms with a large internet presence, the HP fandom had its own fic sites, some of which were dedicated to specific attributes like certain ships or tropes, but fic was also posted en masse to multifandom archives like FF.net and AO3. In fact, as of 2017, there are still more Harry Potter fanworks on FF.net than any other fandom.

Twilight

If HP is the fandom of the century, Twilight is probably the fandom of the 2000’s decade. At least in the media, Twifans were portrayed as either feral teenage girls or feral middle-age women, but the fandom is actually much more diverse. In terms of fanfiction, it goes without saying that the most famous fic within the fandom is probably Master of the Universe by Snowqueens Icedragon, more commonly known by its profic title of Fifty Shades of Grey. Snowqueens Icedragon, A.K.A. E.L. James, filed the serial numbers off of her fic and sold it as an original piece of fiction to massive critical attention and success. You can read a bit more about Fifty Shades here.

One Direction

This is the odd fandom out of the bunch, as it’s the only one listed that’s completely focused on real person fic, or RPF. According to FanLore, since there isn’t traditional source material to function as a canon to write fic about, canon in the 1D sense consists of “One Direction's members' original appearance on the reality show, plus their concerts, albums, music videos, video diaries, interviews, books, photo shoots, award ceremonies, other television appearances, band members' and families' personal twitter accounts, media gossip, authorized candid photos and selfies, and unauthorized candid photos by paparazzi and fans.”

RPF already has a bad reputation in fandom spaces, but since 1D is an engineered boy band adored mainly by teenage girls (fandom’s least favorite demographic), the 1D fandom reputation is in the pits (Jamison 2013). Despite this, the fandom is still quite large, and produces a lot of fic, especially on Wattpad, where the fanfic series turned profic After by Anna Todd was published from 2013 to 2014. The most popular ship amongst directioners is Larry Stylinson, or Harry/Louis.

Finally, we have

SuperWhoLock

Behind HP, this is probably the largest fandom on the list, simply because it’s actually three fandoms smushed together: Supernatural, Doctor Who, and BBC’s Sherlock. Fans in this fandom are called SuperWhoLockians. This fandom was especially active on Tumblr in the early 2010’s, and while the main form of fanwork was gifsets, lots of fanfic was produced in each fandom individually as well in crossovers. The most popular Supernatural ships were Castiel/Dean (Destiel) and Wincest (Sam/Dean, who are brothers, hence the portmanteau between Winchester and incest), while Sherlock’s most popular was Sherlock/Watson or Johnlock. Doctor Who is different, as each individual reincarnation of the Doctor is considered a different character, so each Doctor has different pairings, usually with their respective companions or the Master. SuperWhoLock has a reputation for being cringy due to member’s repeated hijacking of Tumblr posts with fandom related GIFs, but now that the fandom is much less active, the cringe has turned into a feeling of nostalgia.

There are so many more fandoms I could talk about, which just goes to show how fandom spaces have only exploded in size as time has passed. Even though these descriptions aren’t the most detailed, I hope you found them informative and interesting!

@jensengirl83 ~ While her Dean master list is the most extensive, Brandy’s full masterlist includes all three Winchester men, as well as Jensen. Hurt/Comfort, fluff, angst, lots of pining. Regret and Redemption is a beautiful AU series about Dean desperately seeking redemption from the woman he wronged.

@kickingitwithkirk ~ Sam, Dean, J2, RPF, TFW, and Walker. Glen’s masterlist has a lot to choose from, including A/B/O and polyamory. If you enjoy angsty fics, you will find plenty here. Although the fuffy The Coupon Book of Love is definitely worth a read too.

@my-proof-is-you ~ Sam shares a name with one of our favorite Winchesters. Her masterlist includes several series for Dean, Sam, Jensen, and Jared, as well as one-shots and drabbles. Check out the ficlet Delicate, based on the Taylor Swift song, for some angsty Dean feels.

@peridottea91 ~ So many feels on this masterlist. One-shots and series for both Sam and Dean. I recommend Bad Days (Dean), Old Books and Whiskey (Sam), and Hunter’s Farewell to get you started.

@risingphoenix761 ~ A multi-fandom masterlist that includes The Boondock Saints, Supernatural, The Walking Dead, and even original poetry. Drabbles and one-shots with angst, smut, and even a couple of dark fics. Stripped is a beautiful poem about vulnerability. Need some smutty Negan vibes? Read Wake Up, Dollface.

@sams-sass ~ A self-proclaimed hardcore Sam girl, her masterlist is filled with drabbles, one-shots, and series about the youngest Winchester brother. There’s also a couple of Dean fics. Check out Breathe and The Way You Love Me for some sexy, loving Sam.

@samwilsons-pillowpecs ~ For all the Marvel fans out there, check out Suz’s masterlist of one-shots and series for Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Thor, and so much more. Your Eyes is a richly detailed and emotional Sam Wilson x Reader story. A lot of hidden gems on this list, including several fandom crossovers.

@soaringeag1e ~ Criminal Minds, The Walking Dead, and Supernatural fics fill this masterlist. There is so much to choose from, with character and RPF drabbles, one-shots, and series. Love Line is an ongoing heartbreaking Jensen x Reader series. I also recommend Coming Home. Megan has an ongoing AU Detective!Dean Winchester x Victim!Reader series called Escape, and I've been told that there will be some Walker fics added in the future.

@stusbunker ~ Stu’s masterlist is lush and varied – Sam, Dean, Cas, and a myriad of other SPN characters, reader inserts, and OCs, drabbles to series, comfort to smut, A/B/O, and AUs. There’s even a Supernatural/Criminal Minds crossover series. You’re sure to find something to enjoy, like The Fear That Remains, a wonderful Endverse!Dean x Reader fic.

@themoonandotherslikeit ~ Kayla has a varied masterlist of Dean, Sam, and Castiel series, one-shots, and ficlets. Breathe is a captivating series (on-going) about discovering new possibilities and accepting that people aren’t always what they seem.

@watermelonlipstick ~ Chloe’s masterlist is full of delightful drabbles like Furniture Shopping, as well as one-shots and series for each of the brothers. Dean’s Jeans is a lovely one-shot about the boys and their families after leaving the hunting life behind and finding their happily ever after - so many feels.

Interview with Sarah Ellen Parsons

Sarah Ellen Parsons has 18 X-Files stories at Gossamer and 19 at AO3. If you want high quality fic with interesting characters, go read her stories. Some of my favorites of her fics are The Crouching Thing and My Constant Touchstone Who Makes Me A Whole Person (which are two very different stories!). Big thanks to Sarah Ellen for doing this interview.

Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

With today's binge-watching culture, I'm not at all surprised. You can watch a bunch of eps and then seek out fic that is where you are in the series.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

I took away a writer's group Yes, Virginia, that is still together. Mostly as friends, but whenever I write something, or someone else writes something, it's the first place we all run for machete beta. I have betad SO MANY novels.

We have a number of folks who are published writers since then and our time in X-Files fic brought us lifelong friendships IRL and made us all better at our craft. The majority of those folks were better writers than I am. And I make my living as a writer in my day-job.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

I belonged to a couple of the largest lists and posted there and bitched about the show on usenet with everyone else. We had our own Yahoo group for beta. We all had crappy GeoCities websites that we programmed the HTML for ourselves and hooked through various fandom link circles to get traffic to our stories. But the main method of distribution was the lists.

Fun fact, I found a free page counter thing that I used at work one time through fandom. So fandom pays off in skillz.

Even without social media, we managed to get our stories in front of readers who would enjoy them. Where there's a will, there's always someone ready to step up and find a way.

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

Again, I have lifelong friends IRL that I got solely from fanfiction. That's the best takeaway.

Fandom disappointed me because it, like everything else, is ruined by people's egos, backstabbing, and petty people who get in positions of power and then use those positions to punch down or dictate. I was young when I was writing X-Files and I still had hope that people would rise to their better natures, so I got involved in various futile efforts to try to make people behave the way I wanted them to behave, I guess. I did a lot of public bitching that didn't serve me or my friends well. I now put that effort into politics, where it does actual good.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

X-files was made for me. It combined science fiction, mystery, horror. I love all of those genres. Plus there was Scully. No matter how sexist that writer's room was, Scully was awesome. But you kept seeing bad writing. Even in the heyday seasons, like Season 3, there were really terrible eps that made you want to fix things.

I'm a lifelong speculative fiction fan and a published feminist science fiction author. I actually was published before I fell down the fic hole. I got involved in fanfic due to getting my fantasy novel turned down from every major publisher for being "too dark". And I needed to get readers to see my stuff to prove to myself that I wasn't terrible at writing. I got a ton of feedback and it was like market research to see what people wanted to read.

My time in fanfiction made me 100% a better writer than I was.

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

I went to the X-Files Expo to see if I could make contact with someone from Harper Collins because the tie-in novels sucked so hard. I got rejected with my pitch as I didn't have a literary agent.

Around that time, a pal who I watched X-Files with IRL was looking for a free X-files wallpaper for her work computer when she found the website where fans in Pennsylvania had fic archived. She read some and wrote to me - "you need to see this, and you can do better." So I started reading and was.... I probably CAN do better. So I wrote The Batman Plot. And made two friends I'm still friends with with that one story.

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

Nonexistent. I couldn't even watch the latest season and I saw only 2 of season one of whatever that was before I gave up. I have never watched the second movie.

X-files is my first fandom bad ex-husband. I loved it SO MUCH, but it betrayed me.

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

I was deep into Harry Potter for a while, but I didn't end up publishing anything in it. All my stories were novel-length and I was writing so much for work, I never completed anything. I called Snape/Lily when Prisoner of Azkaban was published and got Jossed by Rowling in one of my big ideas. (This is bad fandom ex-husband 2. JKR will never get a dime of money from me again because of her hateful stance on transfolk. I have RL friends who are trans and NO.)

I wrote fic in Supernatural. It was the obvious next thing after X-Files. However, the misogyny and bringing in all the Angel/Devil Christofascist stuff lost me. The ep where they declared all other religions other than Christianity as invalid and killed a Hindu god made me stop watching for good. I know enough Christofascists IRL that I can't tolerate it in my fiction. (Bad fandom ex-husband 3)

Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why?

This list is far too long to actually make. But characters I spent time writing about include: Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Co. (I wrote three unpublished Star Trek novels before I found online fandom). King Arthur and Morgan Le Fay, Sherlock Holmes (I wrote a Sherlock Holmes play after seeing "Crucifer of Blood" and entered it in a national competition, where I got very nice comments back.), Mulder, Scully and Krycek, Rowling's Hermione and Snape (like him or not, its masterful characterization), Dean and Sam Winchester, John Winchester and Bobby Singer. I wrote one comedy story starring Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A couple of Roswell stories under a different name. Catwoman and Batman. I have some unpublished Avengers fanfic lying around as I'm an OG Marvel fan with a massive comic collection.

Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully?

I was on a business trip a few years ago and FX had a marathon and I watched part of it when I was in my hotel room. Early seasons are comforting, but I don't go back there now.

Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?

I don't read X-Files fic anymore. I read a tiny bit of Star Wars after the second movie because Rian Johnson had it right. Now I don't care. I love Mandalorian, but am content to watch.

Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors?

Too many to count. All of YV. Which reminds me, I need to go update our entry at Fanlore. I promised Punk I'd do it a while back. I need to at least get everyone linked. Right now it's only Punk and Sab.

But it was a ton of us. Marasmus, Maria Nicole, Cofax, CazQ, M. Sebasky, Livia Balaban, Kelly Keil, Wen, Ropobop, Jess Mabe, JET, fialka, and a bunch of others that I can't remember their fic names any more, just their real names because I know them all IRL. I need to go back and look up their fic names and link them up there.

In addition to my little group of pals, I loved reading Mustang Sally and Rivka T, Rachel Anton - I keep trying to find her to encourage her to write romance if she's not doing it already, but no dice, Dasha K., Anjou, there were so many great ones, but their names have slipped my mind in the past 20 years.

What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?

I'm most known for Prone, and I'm proud of that story for all kinds of reasons, but I think my very best is The Crouching Thing.

I mostly didn't publish anything I didn't think was good and hadn't been machete betaed within an inch of its life, but I'm not sure much of the angsty romance stuff holds up as well. I think it worked when the show was still ON and we were all in that emotional headspace, but probably not now.

Do you think you'll ever write another X-Files story? Or dust off and post an oldie that for whatever reason never made it online?

Funny you ask. I am currently reworking a plot idea I had for an X-Files fic into a contemporary M/M novel, which I will publish under a different pen-name. The plot is the idea I had for X-Files, the characters are very, very different other than one is uptight and the other more easy-going. But no more Mulder and Scully.

Do you still write fic now? Or other creative work?

I have been making my living as a writer for 25 years. I write the word count equivalent of 5 Tolkein novels a year, just for my day-job. I am turning back to original fiction, which is where I was before X-Files. I'm working on the M/M thing, a high fantasy thing, a low fantasy historical thing and a bunch of M/F Regency romances as I get time and energy. I publish Fantasy and SF under my real name. Romance has pen names as you don't want that getting back to your workplace, either.

SEP is fic only and here she will stay.

Where do you get ideas for stories?

I have too many ideas to count. I try to write them down when they come, so I won't forget. At least the outline of the idea. Often a scene. I've been like this my entire life. I started writing novels seriously at 15. I wrote a 500 plus page one about Morgan Le Fay during breaks in high school because "Mists of Avalon" pissed me off so bad as I'd read the original source material and that was a Wicca recruitment polemic.

What's the story behind your pen name?

Sarah Ellen was my great-grandma, Parsons was her grandma's last name.

Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions?

Half my friends ARE fic friends. Most of my friends know as does my brother, who thinks writing for free is dumb. This is universally agreed on by non-fic friends who know. My mother still doesn't know about the fic. Just the "real" writing. I write under a pen name to keep it away from my job and my published work.

Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?

My X-files stuff is up on Gossamer mostly. I'm trying to get the stories all moved to AO3 for all the genres. I'm working on this now. SEP is really not a living thing anymore, but there was a time when she was more me than me.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?

The community I loved has mostly moved on, but I think we left a legacy of solid work crafted out of our love for the show. Find a living community you love for a show you love. There are great people out there creating and get involved. It will be worth it.

Can I request a non-con CastielxdemonReader and DeanxdemonReader where the Reader is working with the Winchesters to help take down a common foe, she and Dean have feelings for each other but they pretend to hate each other but reveal their feelings for each other when Reader almost dies on a hunt? And maybe unrequited CastielxReader where he also has feelings for the Reader and gets jealous when Dean and reader get together so he forces himself on her? Also, can I add one more thing? Like Castiel forces the Reader to like it, even if she's trying so hard not to.

The Reader is desperately trying to close her legs while Castiel eats her out until she’s chafed and sore. Castiel’s extremely possessive and jealous and makes his mark all over her. Then he forces her to ride him until they both come. Castiel refuses to pull out and he comes inside the Reader.

Crowley

When is forever too long - My first fan fic. Starts off in the past with Fergus Macleod, he is an alpha and this is his story. Will progress into Crowley time period. I suck at summaries please read. I own nothing including Crowley...unfortunately. Only some characters are mine and story plot. Hope you enjoy. Alternate Meeting

Another Try - Okay so this is an ask I got. Reader is Crowley's daughter from when he was a human. She tries to kill him for leaving her. Let me know what ya'll think.

Nothing wrong with a tomboy - Hi, I love how you write, really. :) I wanted to ask you if you could do a Crowley x Reader where the reader is a tomboy (basically a female Dean but with Sam' sensibility XD) and Crowley is half human? There was a very positive response to this bingo idea, so I went forward and started it up!

Sign ups start now!!

Since there are multiple other bingos out there for SPN. I have given you the option to do either a 3x3 or a 5x5. I know how stressful it can be to look at one and get overwhelmed and that is not the point of this at all.

Sign ups close July 15th at 11:59pm. Timezones don’t matter. Will change squares up to July 31st 2018 at 11:59pm.

@trexrambling: My sunflower. Jess. What can one even say about Jess? She’s amazing. The way she writes things, the feeling she puts into her work is just mind-blowing. Her characterisations are always on point and she writes all the sass. I love it.

Fics you should be reading: Through Your Eyes (seriously, I want this entire series tattooed on my body), Used To This, Falling Stars, 10 Reasons, Afraid of Home, Bite Me, For You, I Would

@percywinchester27: Ana. Ana is amazing, okay? She paints bright pictures with words and she knows how to create the most amazing, compelling and thick plots ever. Nothing in her writing is random and she writes the most amazing Weechester fics ever. Ever, I’m telling you.

Fics you should be reading: Stroke of Luck, Tic Tac Toe, Dee, Silences, It’s Him, Band-Aid, Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches.

@ravengirl94: Twin’s fics are just... Uh, what’s that word? Fan-frigging-tastic. The stories are realistic, perfectly paced, detailed and a perfect mix of fluff and angst and so much sarcasm.

Fics you should be reading: The Arrangement, Hold On, I’m Coming, Marry Me, This Can’t Be The End.

@atwistoffate: Okay, so this one has such a special place in my heart because I just love everything she writes. Like, if her fics were a man, I’d marry them. She just... She puts such emotion in her stories, love her characters so deeply and it’s...mind-blowing. I can picture myself reading her book while I sip my coffee in my favorite coffee shop, she’s so talented.

Fics you should be reading: Broken (hmm, yeah, it’s gonna break you), Ephemeral (SAME), How One Day Changed Everything, A Song For Your Heart (question: is the title inspired by James Blunt’s song Carry You Home because it reminds me of it so much), I love you too

@torn-and-frayed: Steph’s writing is frigging icredible. First of all, she gets Dean. She sees through his layers, understands and loves and accepts every aspect of him, flawed or not, and that is evident in her work. And then, she just has the most brilliant ideas ever. However. Grab a pack of tissues and some ice cream before diving into her masterlist, you’re gonna need them.

Fics you should be reading: Twist of Fate, Series Rewrite, Daddy’s Little Lovebug, Art Therapy, Little Things, Drugs Don’t Work (still not over that one, tbh)

@lipstickandwhiskey: Lips. I love Lips. Again, her characterization of Dean is 100% on point. Her writing is breath-taking, the things she can do with words mind-blowing and, if I’m being honest, what I admire the most about her fics is how she focuses on the relationship Dean have because they love and respect each other as personalities, without, however, excluding physical attraction. She just doesn’t make it the most important part and, to me, that’s beautiful.

Fics you should be reading: Hold The Line, Tape Hiss, Ferrum Gloria, Balconies, Bright and Warm, Words and Actions

@there-must-be-a-lock: I haven’t had the chance to really dive into the world of Lou’s writing, but I realized, from the very first sentence of hers I read, that she is phenomenal. She has a very unique, very amazing way of writing and going through her entire masterlist is in my bucket list.

Fics you should be reading: Let’s Get Married, Tiger Teeth, Heart of Gold.

@blacktithe7: Much like in Lou’s case, I haven’t had the chance to read as many fics as I want written by this brilliantly talented person. But I have read Erin’s series Forward and all I can say is that she is one magnificent writer. I don’t normally like RPFs for my own reasons, but she wove this story so perfectly and respectfully that it was impossible for me to ignore. A masterpiece, really.

Fics you should be reading: Forward (and I’m sure plenty others, but I have to read them first)

@sixtysevenandwhiskey: Annie’s relatively new when it comes to posting her work, but she is so good. Emotive, on point, detailed and dusted with love for Dean and Sam her fics are the best.

Fics you should be reading: Brother (one of my all time favorites), In The Wind, Stay, I’ve Got You

@masksandtruths: Rae is so amazing with words. So amazing. Her characters are always so well-rounded, she paints Dean’s and Sam’s portraits in depth and she comes up with brilliantly original stories. I was impressed from the very first sentence and I continue to be, every single time.

Fics you should be reading: anagrAMSTERDAM (this one is mind-blowing, I still think about it), Never Normal, This Time Around, Bless Your Heart

@hannahindie: Let me put it this way. Hannah is awesome. She works so hard on her fics and she loves doing so. Her work is beautiful and very different from the usual reader inserts in this site and it gives me a strong Stephen King vibe sometimes (Hannah, I really hope you like the guy, or please, just ignore this). And she gets our boys, you know?

Fics you should be reading: Wake up, Sammy, Love Games, Freaky Friday, Simple Man, If I Could Start Again, Memories, Brother, I’m Right Here, 67′ Chevy (this one is so good it will haunt me until the day I die), The Wedding Singer (a collab series with the amazing @pinknerdpanda. I haven’t had the chance to dive into Amanda’s world yet, but she’s talented and Barcelona and Ain’t No Sunshine are a proof of that).

@sunlightdances: Remember how I say I love it when talented writers nail Dean’s characterization? Well. Katie is definitely one of them. There’s something about her writing I can’t quite put my finger on, that gives it a very specific vibe. When I read her work, I feel like I’m wrapped up in Dean’s arms under my favorite blanket. She captures Dean’s softnesss perfectly, she lights on his rough edges perfectly, she’s just perfect.

Fics you should be reading:It’s So Clear Now, Now And Then, I Get A Little Lost, Don’t You Forget About Me (the fic that made me fall in love with her writing), Love Laid Down, Loving Everything You Do

@wheresthekillswitch: Lee is another writer I really want to read more closely. She is insanely talented and I could tell that much from the time I read Unspoken. It’s yet another Jensen series and, taking under consideration the fact I do not read RPFs often, you can understand how worth it this is. It’s a beautiful story about love in every shape and form, and fate and friendship and there’s so much love and respect for Jared and Jensen that it warms my heart.

Fics you should be reading: Unspoken (again, I’m sure plenty others, but I have to read them first, lol)

@imagining-supernatural: Last but not least, the master of original stories and mind-blowing plot twists and angst and fluff and perfection. Aubrey is so frigging talented and you can tell that by reading her stories. Sarcastic and brilliant, every single fic in her masterlist is worth a read.

Fics you should be reading: As It Seems (this one is so perfect and I am going to make a full-lenght post about it at some point), Break Up With Him, You’re Not There (this one still hurts), Down With Me (SO GOOD), Jealous!Dean Imagine

PS. I know I’m forgetting people and fics and, so, I ask all of you to be forgiving. This is just a list on the top of my head, but there are many more writers I love. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make a post about them soon, as well.

Also. Regarding my writing plans I HAVE SO MANY.

I’m currently working on a new, quite angsty fic ( @torn-and-frayed said you can blame her, lol), featuring demon!Dean. It’s mostly written, so hopefully, I can post it sometime after next week.

Then, there’s a very fluffy fic coming right after that, in which we see the five times Dean Winchester almost kisses the reader and the one time he actually does.

I’m planning to work on Somewhere Only We Know Part III after that fic is posted.

A fluffy slash crack-ish drabble (?) based on a prompt sentence by my sunflower @trexrambling is coming right after that and

I’m guessing the next part of Always is next, if everything goes according to plan. And so many more things I want to work on.

Part 5 - Taverns and Tea

Business at the Roadhouse tavern was like it always was; busy. Dean Winchester sat in his usual fur covered chair, facing the fireplace. His brother brought another round of drinks for the both of them and set them on a table before Dean.

Dean downed another pint. “What’s the point.” He muttered. “I keep pursuing Y/N and every time they shoot me down.”

“So maybe stop pursuing them?” Sam offered.

The older Winchester glared at his brother.

“Look, Dean, it’s not the end of the world. You can get any girl- or guy, for that matter- in town you want!”

“Yeah, but I don’t want anyone else!” Dean huffed. The hunter was too stubborn to let the one that got away go.

“Dean, please. Come on, Benny Lafitte’s single, right?” Sam said.

“I’m not dating someone taller than me.” Dean grumbled.

“What about Jo Harvelle?” Sam offered.

“Talks too much.” Dean scoffed.

“Gadreel? The librarian?”

“He’s a nerd.”

“Becky Rosen?”

“More like clingy.”

“Garth Fitzgerald’s a nice guy.”

“He’s always too happy.”

“Rowena?”

“You’re joking. Why can’t Y/N just like me?” Dean whined.

Sam sighed. “Don’t put yourself down like this, Dean.”

“If I’m not good enough for them, I’m not good enough at all.” Dean concluded, turning his green eyes to the ground and pouting like a child.

Sam sat next to Dean. He looked up at the mantle and the wall behind it. Countless animal heads decorated the tavern but this section? This was all the Winchesters’. Scratch that, it was all Dean’s. All Sam did during hunts was chase the prey for Dean to wear it out before his brother got the final shot, and all the credit. Sam always felt proud of his brother, though there was always a hint of jealousy.

“Everyone here wishes they were you. Your skills, your good looks…” Sam would add ‘your brains’ but his brother wasn’t exactly the sharpest arrow in the quiver. “Your reputation…” He added. “Everybody in town either wants to be with you or to be you.”

Dean just grunted as a reply.

“Tell me again how you got that one.” Sam said, pointing to the stuffed head of a bear.

A faint smile crept across Dean’s face. “Took me three whole days. I sprained my ankle in the process, but still managed to catch it.”

A couple people grouped around Dean as he told the tale.

“It got caught in a trap I had laid out by the river, so I caught up to it and BANG!” Dean shouted. “Killed it in one shot.”

Becky, a blonde who was arguably Dean’s biggest fan clapped as he finished the story. Dean gestured for her to come closer, so she did, sitting on the arm of the armchair, leaning towards her crush.

“Oh Dean,” Becky sighed. “You’re sooo manly.”

The elder brother grinned and flexed. “I work out, you know. I bet I could lift Sam.”

“Really?” She gasped.

Sam grimaced. “Please don’t. We’ll take your word for it.”

Dean laughed. “Scared I’m right, Sammy?”

Dean went on telling hunting stories about his prowess. He was skilled, that was true, but his ego and stubbornness often got him in trouble, so Sam was the one who had to pull him out of it. Of course, the favour was never returned.

Sam was always there for his brother. He supported him and helped him with hunts or picking up flings. The thing was, he didn’t have the courage to get in Dean’s way when things got out of hand.

If Sam had Dean’s courage, or Dean had Sam’s intellect, things would probably turn out different for the brothers.

A loud knock at your door woke you. You sat up and yawned, surprised for a second by the unfamiliar surroundings. You weren’t home, you remembered.

Your room in this castle had to be the size of your house in the village. The four poster bed was soft and big. The walls were painted elegantly, rather than plain brick. Everything was so much bigger, so much more expensive. Not to mention the wardrobe was alive too.

There was another knock. “Dinner. Now. Join me.” The Beast growled from outside.

“Ask nicely.” Castiel chided.

“And smile!” Balthazar added.

The Beast bared his fangs in what vaguely resembled a smile.

Balthazar winced. “We’ll work on that.”

“Now ask again,” Chuck said. “Nicely.”

The Beast huffed and faced the door again. “Would you join me for dinner?” He asked in a softer, but still demanding voice.

You wanted to scream. “Join you? You treat me like garbage and you want me to eat dinner with you?!” You yelled.

The feathers of the Beast wings bristled, and his chest rose and fell heavily as his breathing quickened.

The servants picked up quickly on his anger. Castiel was the first to try and calm him down. “Easy now-”

The Beast raised his fist and slammed it against the door. “YOU WILL JOIN ME FOR DINNER AND THAT’S NOT A REQUEST!” He roared.

“NO!” You yelled back, twisting the lock on the door handle and dragging a chair in front of it. You didn’t want to see his ugly face again if you could help it.

“Fine!” The Beast sneered. “GO AHEAD AND STARVE! If you don’t eat with me, you don’t eat at all!”

“Fine!” You replied.

The Beast turned and stormed off down the hall, slashing a wall in anger as he went.

Balthazar looked at his friends. “Staff meeting.”

Balthazar stood on the round table, tapping his arm against a glass to get everyone’s attention.

“Hello, everyone.” Balthazar started. “Well, everyone who could be here.”

“I can tell dad!” A teacup piped up.

“Hush, Jack. Later.” Castiel replied.

“So, we have a guest. Someone from the village named Y/N.” Balthazar continued. “As you know, we don’t have a lot of time left. If things work out, Y/N could be the one. We’ll all return to normal.”

“That’s a great plan and all, but what if it doesn’t work?” Charlie, a former maid turned cardinal-shaped feather-duster asked.

“We have to try.” Chuck said.

The group murmured in agreement.

“So, the master has forbidden Y/N to eat dinner with him after his temper tantrum. Of course, we can’t have that.” Balthazar retold. “Gabriel will be asleep in his quarters soon enough. We’ll make a second dinner.”

“Castiel, Jack, bring some tea upstairs for our guest. Tell Y/N and Crowley of the plan. Charlie, tell Lucifer to wait in the dining room. The rest of us will cook and set up.” Chuck gave the orders.

Cas nodded as best as a teapot could nod. “Come along, Jack.”

Jack skipped across the table to join his uncle. “Charlie, tell dad I say hi!”

Charlie smiled. “Will do, kiddo.”

“So, can I ask why you’re a wardrobe?” You inquired.

Crowley hummed, thinking. “Suppose the one who cursed us had a sense of humour. I was a tailor.”

“Huh. Interesting.” You replied.

“And you?” Crowley asked. “What do you do?”

“I help- or helped my father with his work.” You explained. “He makes things like clocks and music boxes.”

A tap at the door ended your quiet conversation.

Your voice wavered as you spoke. “Go away.”

“It’s Castiel.” Was the muffled reply.

“The master doesn’t knock that softly.” Crowley chuckled. “Let him in.”

You moved the chair away from your door and unlocked it. When you opened the door, a trolley with a tea set was before you.

“You must be Castiel.” You said, wheeling the cart in.

“I am.” The teapot replied. “This,” He gestured to the teacup beside him “Is Jack.”

“Nice to meet you!” The little cup replied, its painted face grinning. He sounded young. You felt pity for this poor kid. He was probably the only one of his age in this palace.

You smiled. “Nice to meet you too.”

“We’re making you something to eat.” Castiel said.

You frowned. “I thought I wasn’t allowed to eat.”

“What the great big lummock doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Crowley huffed. “You need to eat, love.”

“You’re not afraid of him?”

The room fell silent.

“No,” Castiel finally spoke. “He has outbursts but he’ll never hurt anyone.”

“I think the person who fears him most is himself.” Crowley mused. “Are you afraid?”

“No,” You replied. “He doesn’t scare me. He’s big and he’s cruel, but there’s… something about him. Like an animal lashing out in pain…”

You fell quiet. Could this beast have any emotion apart from anger? Why would these cursed people stand up for him? How did this happen?
