By the way if you're creating a space like a private group chat or a Discord server it is absolutely your responsibility to make sure that space is safe.

It is your responsibility to moderate it. To regulate the behavior displayed within it. To take action when people create harm. You cannot just create this space then wash your hands of any responsibility for what happens within it.

I keep seeing so many teens making servers and chats and groups and then whining that they're getting bullied for not doing anything when people use them to cause harm and upset and I cannot stress this enough.

You are responsible for shutting that down. Or for sourcing someone to do it on your behalf. You have control of that space. You are not just an innocent bystander.

"Anything goes here, if you're offended just leave" is absolutely not an excuse for blatantly allowing things like harassment, bullying, racism, homophobia and other targeted hate.

Discord in particular is incredible for available resources for preventing things like this. There are literally hundreds of server bots you can deploy to auto-moderate and manual moderation is as easy as two little clicks.

If you feel you're responsible enough to be in the position of power of creating a space, you are responsible enough to ensure it is not used for harm.

And if you're not?

= It was a long day at work, you're so excited to go home and sleep. You load up into your car and hear your phone beep, You check it and see Dean has texted you "Im at your place, Please come home soon"

+ You begin to worry and rush home as soon as possible, quickly running into the house and throwing your stuff down, you check every room "Dean?!" You finally find him on the bathroom floor, his face covered in tear stains and a paci just barely staying in his mouth while he cries

= "Oh Dean honey what's wrong" you whisper to him, crouching down to be at his level. "I don't like it!" He cries louder, hiding his face in his knees, you gently pet his hair "Oh i know but im here, you're okay" you try your best to calm him

+ He looks up at you "Why don't we go to my room, i think i have some stuffies in there and i definitely have some cuddly blankets" You smile and hold your hand out before he takes it and stands up with you, you lead him to the bedroom and get him all set up with a stuffie and blanket "What shall we watch hun?"

= He smiles slightly "Scooby?" You turn on scooby doo and sit beside him "All better?" You smile and hold him close to you, gently rubbing his arm "All better" He mumbles, his nose still stuffy from crying.

+ "Just relax, you're safe here" You lay your head on his and watch Scooby, before you know it Dean is fast asleep on your shoulder. You help him lay down and tuck him in, making sure the room is perfect for his rest before laying beside him slowly falling asleep as well.
