Hi sreegs! Thank you for your service. So you know how when you click on a post, at the bottom are nine “more posts like this” options? Well, I was recently looking at a silly post about someone gluing a plastic horse on their phone case in a way that made the horse look like it was photobombing all their photos. Pretty innocuous, right?

But of the “more posts like this” right below the plastic-horse-photobomb post, 4 of the 9 options were clear cut transphobia. Like, the anti-trans hate was the POINT of those posts, they weren’t even incidentally transphobic.

So then I’m like WTF? Where is this coming from, that the algorithm thinks I want transphobic content because I’m looking at some very silly phone case equine shenanigans?? It’s certainly not from my mutual’s account: she’s very trans-inclusive. It sure doesn’t seem like it came from the OPs account either. Not anyone like 3 layers of reblogging previous to my mutual. It’s SO WEIRD and I hate it a lot. 😔 It makes me feel really blue to see transphobic suggested posts come up. Any idea why this might have happened?

The related posts algo is not really about what it thinks you want. When I refer to Tumblr's "algos" it's important to keep in mind Tumblr doesn't do like ML reccos on the scale that facebook does, where it analyzes everything you do on the site then serves up something tailored "for you". The related posts/based on your likes is closer to "people who liked this post also liked this post".

I saw the post you were talking about and the related transphobic post and yep, that's shit. Report the post like I did. I don't have an explanation for why it happened in this case.

i feel like a lot of the 'i hate kids' crowd would be more tolerant if they understood that due to a kid's limited experience of the world that 4 hour flight might just be the longest they've ever had to sit still for or that trapped finger might literally be the most pain they've ever felt in their short life or they might not have ever seen a person with pink hair ever so of course they want to touch it or nobody's told them yet that they can't run around the museum and they only just learned cheetahs are the fastest animals so of course they want to put that to the test. how were they supposed to know etc etc.

It's honestly crazy that discussion around testosterone HRT skews so much towards the beginning stages of it (to the point that you have dozens of guys thinking their transition is "failed" if they don't pass by like a year in lol) and what the initial changes of the first couple of months to years look like, like the classic laundry list of those early basic changes like bottom growth, voice drop, etc, when IMO literally none of that compares remotely to the depth and intensity of the long term total masculinization you start to experience like 3-5+ years in.

#also has made it increasingly difficult to relate to those early into their transition honestly #like not in a bitter way it’s just like hard to express how diff the experience is #of being like a year on T vs 5 😭#ETA I muted this post ages ago now but fwiw seeing transphobes pop up in the notes on occasion just to say cruel reactionary shit #you are clowns I cannot imagine seeing a post that is ONLY about discussing with folks about the reality of a medication #and choosing to make that your moment to get a schoolyard bully jab in about how you find it gross or something.#you are less well adjusted than must children. may the universe be kinder to you than you are to others.
