Manga Monday - 22 January 2024

Hiya fiends,

It's time for another #MangaMonday!

Last week I continued my #DemonSlayer read with volumes 19 and 20. For the uninitiated , this is a manga about the Demon Slayer Corps and their numerous battles against demons (as you may have guessed). This series is absolutely fantastic! While at times it can feel quite 'fight scene heavy' (given the nature of the story, that's completely understandable), the character backstories are phenomenal and on more than one occasion, I've found myself feeling sorry for a murderous demon. So that's nice!

I continued my #OnePiece journey with volume 27. I don't know what I can say about this manga that hasn't already been said by just about everyone else, but I will say this: no matter what kind of day I've had, One Piece always puts a smile on my face.

Last week I also started on #FullmetalAlchemist and... OH MY GOD! HOW GOOD IS THIS??? Even after only one volume, I can already feel a new obsession developing. I'm looking forward to diving into Volume 2! What manga have you been reading recently?

Did you ever think we would become so advanced that the Sci-Fi movie we watched years ago came to pass? We must be careful how much of ourselves we turn over to AI. It is a scary thing that is developing in our day and age. We have eliminated employees and real minds, trying to save time, money, and energy. But at who's expense? Review: The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews 📚 Book Club collectively gives this book 3 ⭐. Liked, didn't love. Hard to really sink into, never felt invested. Too much to unpack; felt like the murder mystery dominated this romance labeled book. ☕ Overall, I liked the book, but didn't love it. It was hard to get into, and I personally didn't feel invested until around chapter 52. The murder mystery felt like it had the majority of focus in this book, which diluted the romance. There were a lot of characters in this book, and I felt like they were slighted because there was just too much going on. I think this book would have been much better if it would have focused on either the romance or the murder. I have read The Santa Suit by the same author, and loved it. Manga Mondays - Soara and the House of Monsters

Hiya fiends, Recently (well, since about September last year), I've really got into reading manga, so I thought I'd start sharing some of the things I've read and enjoyed. So, welcome to the first #MangaMonday!

This weekend I read the first volume in a fantastic manga called "Soara and the House of Monsters" by Hidenori Yamaji. It tells the story of Soara, a young girl who has been raised to fight monsters and protect her human kingdom… the only thing is that by the time she's ready to fight, there's peace between humans and monsters (typical, right?). Soara suddenly realises that she has no friends, no family and no sense of purpose. While she figures out what to do with her new life, she meets a group of dwarves who build comfortable homes for monsterkind. Through their work, we're introduced to a whole host of fun and interesting creatures, and the houses that are created are AMAZING! This manga is part found family, part coming of age, and part home improvement show. Fantastic story and fantastic art! Volume 2 is due out in February, so there's not long to wait for the next part.

Happy Thursday! . My first review for June is for The Favor by Nora Murphy. A riveting debut domestic thriller. . 📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 Book Review: . I just loved this debut novel. Nora Murphy is definitely the latest author I will be watching out for new books from. . I love the situation in the story because it exemplifies how anybody can fall prey to an abusive person, even intelligent, accomplished women. Domestic abuse victims are handled sensitively and with the utmost respect in this story. "I am someone like you." That quote says it all, doesn't it? The story gives a sense of "you're not alone" to victims in the best possible way. . The tale had me riveted. Discovering how the two women came to be linked and how the story plays out is utterly and positively compelling from the first page to the last. I found the plot, though not original, to be rewarding and fascinating and to fulfill every reader's innermost need in stories such as this. . I became confused early on as the story switched timelines and 1st person narrators rather frequently. But once the story settled a bit, I could follow much more effortlessly. There are three 1st person narrators: Leah, McKenna, and a detective, and each tells a tale as equally compelling as the others. . I don't want to say too much because I would hate to ruin the surprise of this story. Still, I can say that it contains exciting twists and turns, loads of suspense, and an ending that will have you contemplating how small the world really is. Also, the author's note is worth reading as it gave me an even greater appreciation for the story and how it is told. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 . What is your first read for the month? .
