"The Crow's Nest"
St. Nicholas illustrated magazine for young folk, October 1881
Text reads:
The crow flew east the crow flew west
Seeking a spot to build her nest
To east to west to south flew she
She flew to the top of the old pine tree
"Now here is the place for me"
Quoth she
"Right here in the top of this tree"
Woth Sticks and straws
Whatever she found
She built her nest
Both firm and round
"My nest within the old pine tree
A noble nest shall be"
Said she,
My nest in the top of the tree
The farmer looked to east to west
Seeking to find the old crows nest.
"The bird that eats my corn for me,
Shall have no nest in my tree"
Quoth he,
No nest in the top of my tree.
The little bous ran from all the town
To see the crows nest come down
The farmer climbed right well climbed he
Far up in the boughs of the tree
Climbed he quite to the top of the tree
The bpughs grew slimmer and more slim
The farmer-man was stout of limb.
Up he went and down came he
Quite down from the top of the tree.
Came he all at once from
The top of the tree
The little boys ran
To east to west
The crow flew screaming to her nest
The farmer rubbed his aching knee
"It may stat forever for all of me
That gruesome nest in the tree"
Quoth he
"That nest in the top of the tree."

We've reached the end of Vintage Book Week 2023 on Instagram, with Prompt 4 "Hansel e Gretel". Here's my final entry. I decided to keep close to the original book cover illustration for this final one. I've actually illustrated a fun version of H&G, "It's Not Hansel and Gretel" by Josh Funk, so be sure to check that out on Amazon or at your local bookstores (Plug opportunity lol).
I want to thank everyone that took the time to participate in the challenge. And a huge thank you to my wonderful and talented co hosts, who put all this together to make this challenge a success. It was a lot of fun getting to see all the wonderful entries and meet new artists and get to talk to ones I've known for awhile. Maybe we'll get to do this again next year . . . . lol
If you haven't already, please follow and support my wonderful cohorts lol:

'Nightbitch' by Rachel Yoder
Tumblr media
This book was a bit of a wild ride and I loved it, beside the somewhat unnecessary graphic description of the death of the family cat… that part I could have honestly just done without. But otherwise, I thought Nightbitch was an incredible and very thought-provoking read - 4/5.
Although the story centres around a woman literally turning into a dog (not a spoiler, it’s literally in the description) this is essentially the story of a relatively new, inadequately supported mother, stretched to beyond her means physically, mentally and emotionally. Utterly exhausted and overwhelmed, the main character struggles with not only with the general day-to-day of 24/7 motherhood, but also the loss of her career in the arts after having their baby, and is a woman generally mourning the loss of her own sense of self. She is left alone every week by a pretty unsupportive working-away-from-home husband who does little to nothing of benefit, even in the 48 hrs he returns to the family home on weekends… which is just enough time to dole out unsolicited and oversimplified advice on how to deal with things. To say I wanted to kick him up the arse for the majority of the book would be an understatement.
There’s so much more to this story than the woman’s Kafka-esque transformation into the dog, aka Nightbitch. The book took me a little by surprise by how much was tinged with sadness at the sheer desperation of exhaustion and the loss of one’s own identity as a woman beyond that of a mother after having children. The book has a lot for discussion on the problematic aspects of ‘traditional’ female/male gender roles, and I found myself incredibly irritated many times (mainly due to the husband). The idea of motherhood not being a ‘real’ job because it’s devoid of financial reward is a tale as old as time, and the story accurately sums up how being a stay-at-home mother without paid work outside of the household DOES NOT equate to being a lady of leisure! The character’s unsupportive husband gets to switch off in hotel rooms watching tv after his workday ends, yet her role as a stay-at-home mother is 24/7 and essentially a thankless task, yet one which she’s expected to feel lucky and oh so privileged to have all the same, because he ‘works all week’ (as if she doesn’t?!) or more importantly, because he brings home the money… sigh.
Her transformative experience to ‘Nightbitch’ felt to me like something that was entirely and truly hers - something solitary and unconstrained by her identity as a mother or wife. After losing her sense of self and her career in the art world, this woman reawakened her own empowerment through the literal embodiment of the character of Nightbitch, thus reigniting her lost passion and regaining her sense of self through “the transformative capacities of art”.
Yes, there’s a lot of discussion of gross bodily actions and yes, there’s a lot of killing of small creatures etc. (which I didn’t like at all, who would?) but for me, focusing on the woman changing into the dog is actually just reductive - there’s so much more to discuss here.
