PLOT SUMMARY:

The Salaan islands are home to the People of the Salt. When their Duke’s family, who lives on an isolated island in a manor called Highmoor suffer yet another loss, the People of the Salt can’t help but feel that the family is cursed.

The family has been in a perpetual state of mourning, after the death of their mother and the four eldest sisters, the remaining 7 girls are desperate to shed the cloud of gloom that hangs over Highmoor. The girls ache for happiness and find it through a mystical door that whisks the girls away every night to pageantry and dancing. However, one sister, Annaleigh, is unsettled by the rash death of her sisters and is determined to solve the mystery of her family’s misfortune.

But as Annaleigh gets closer to the truth her nightmares intensify and sinister forces wreak their havoc on her sanity.

REVIEW: Erin’s writing is rich in detail. Her world-building is lush and evocative. She enraptures the imagination completely and delivers delish chills.

I loved this book! It was everything I hoped for and more. That isn’t to say its without flaw but then what book is. This story is a loose retelling of the Grimm tale of the 12 Dancing Princesses. I had never read it before, so I went in without any expectations. It was dark and creepy, and grotesque and amazing.

I loved how each sister exhibited their own personality, they all had their own quirks, but they were also alike in some ways. To me, it exhibited their close bond. I enjoyed the world-building; it was incredibly lush with detail. The only thing I wish Erin would have expanded on was the Pantheon of Gods. I feel like there is a lot of potential there for some great storytelling.

While some of the story was a bit predictable, there were also twists that I never expected.

Overall, this is a gothic fairy tale not to be missed!

Miro! . 📚 BookReview 📚 . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- Do you ever read a book that awes you so much that you struggle to find the words to adequately describe your reading experience? Ordinary Monsters is definitely one of those books for me. The world-building is phenomenal. The darkness is expertly conveyed in every aspect and every scene. It is pervasive and immersive and can be felt with all senses. It sets the stage for a flawed group of characters who have suffered at the hands of others yet whose resilience remains stubborn and strong. It also hides layers and layers of meaning and story that slowly come to light as you realize the story you've been reading is different than the actual story you've been reading. Magic is my favorite part of any fantasy tale that utilizes it. In this story, a child's talent reflects their very personality, and I absolutely adored that connection. The magic is unique, with roots in magic known to the reader. I love that the story takes tried and true magical abilities, infuses them with unique ones, and turns them all into something fresh and new. Ordinary Monsters is told in 3rd person omniscient narration. The prose is so rich and compelling that it is impossible to not read and savor each word. The suspense level remains high from the first page to the last, and the plot twists and turns with unexpected surprises and challenges. What’s your favorite King Arthur retelling? (it can be a book or film) These three books are by far my favorites involving King Arthur. Many thanks to @onemorechapterhc for eARC via #NetGalley #Bookreview A Sunrise Over Bali by Sandy Barker ⭐⭐⭐(3.5/5) A Sunrise Over Bali is cozy and heartwarming travel romance that revolves around Jaelee at the crossroad of life who find love, friendship, and home at Bali. The story is about getting over heartbreak, betrayal, found family, friendship, love, and self-discovery. All characters are lovely, likable, and realistic. Jaelee is interesting to read. I enjoyed seeing how the influence of Bali is changing her little by little, making her ruminate about her life, the problems she left behind, and where she wants to go from this point. Best part of the book is setting of Bali and UROP-a co-living space for the digital nomad. I loved reading about places and activities, food, culture, lifestyle of Bali. They aren’t all out of brochure places and activities or all nice and touristy part but had the feel of real experience making the story perfect escapism. I loved the idea of digital nomads. It was amazing how people staying at UROP became a community, helping each other, doing activities and exploring places together in their free time when they are not working. Why 3.5 Stars- My main complaint here is, it’s not that gripping. It’s extremely cozy that I often fell asleep while reading this. No drama for most of the book also didn’t help it. Story’s backdrop is amazing but the main story is just too simple and too drawn out. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Jaelee and Alistair. Overall, this is lovely, cozy travel romance giving the perfect escapism and making it good summer read but I didn’t feel the romance and it was too slow for me.
