Striking a delicate balance between the intimacy of first-person narration, and the excitement of a rich plot full of relatable characters and twists, this multilayered book is at once intimate and page-turning. What stands out most is the degree of empathy Collins has for her characters, which is then transferred to the reader. A challengingly intimate novel, the writing is both sober and poetic in its exploration of the many bonds we form throughout life, resulting in a novel that is emotionally gripping and inspiring.
Review: Wonders in the Waves by Jennifer Collins ★★★★

Are you looking for a story that leaves you with a good feeling? You need Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. This book has had a lot of positive buzz and I thought the beach was the perfect place to read it. This story is about Tova, a recent widow, who mourns the loss of her son and the future he’ll never have. There’s Cameron - a young man who started life at a disadvantage with a missing father and an addicted mother and can’t seem to get outof his own way. Only Marcellus (full name - Marcellus McSquiddles) a Giant Pacific Octopus 🐙 knows the connection between them and is determined to show them before his time is up. This book is about grief and family in whatever form it takes. The ending is wonderful as well as the journey to get there. (You’ll yell at Cameron a couple of times) Thanks to Ms. Van Pelt for having a Brad character that’s a good guy. (3 books in a row with a Brad 😮) Read this book. Not a lot of books make you feel this warm and fuzzy 🥰 You were a good man, Marcellus 🐙 #remarkablybrightcreatures #shelbyvanpelt #contemporaryfiction #beachreads #surfsidebeach #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookwormlife #sodacityreads #bookworm #suspensebook #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #homelibrary #thrillerbooks #crimefiction #thriller #characterdrivenbooks #mysterythriller #bookrecs (at Surfside Beach, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChR9Ma9rg67/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple has been out for several years. BOTM offered it as an add-on “Bernadette Fox has disappeared. Her daughter, Bee, puts together the pieces of why she left through emails, invoices and school memos and discovers the secret past that Bernadette had been hiding.” Bernadette does things her own way. How would you feel if someone destroyed one of your great achievements just so they could have a bigger driveway? So many great characters and hilarious situations. (You just know the mudslide is coming 😂) Kathleen Wilhoite gives a fantastic performance on the audiobook - one of my favorites this year. So many laugh-out-loud moments.
