Short Take: Nettle and Bone

When I got to the last page of Nettle and Bone, it was with a sigh of satisfaction of a story well-told and meticulously crafted. While many of the traditional high fantasy elements are there, princes and princesses, curses and godmothers, quests and goblin markets, each is subverted in the most delightful way. Marra is the third daughter of a tiny kingdom struggling to remain autonomous against more powerful neighbors to the south and north. Her mother has laid her political pieces carefully, using first one daughter, then the second to appease one potential foe to hold off the other. Marra is packed off to a convent to keep her out of the way, but also in reserve. However, when Marra discovers the terrible secret keeping her sister trapped in her marriage, she will grasp at any way to free her. Including seeking out a dust-wife with a demon chicken, braving the goblin market, and crafting a dog from bones.

T. Kingfisher’s voice is thoughtful and humorous, filled with the small everyday details that plague a reluctant 30-year-old heroine who can see nothing for it but to do one impossible task after the other because there is no one else to do them. While there are grim moments (we begin in a pit of bones where Marra is constructing her bone-dog) it is the quiet camaraderie and pragmatic wisdom that give the narrative its warmth and heart. Not to mention many, many powerful yet underestimated women. And knitting. Perfect for any fantasy lover, I’d highly recommend Nettle and Bone especially to fans of Alix E Harrow and Kate Elliott.

KOA was such a perfect (and extremely emotional) conclusion to this incredible series. Laia, Elias, and Helene are characters that will always hold a special place in my heart. TSLD lived up to all the hype and has become one of my favorite reads. It has all my favorite tropes and the most dreamy love interest so it’s the perfect book to rep my love of romance reads! ⁣ ⁣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗮 ⁣ I cannot say enough about this stunning book. House is such a magical & special book that tells a beautiful story of love, acceptance, and family.
